Casa Luxe Real Estate has soared in recent years. Founded in June 2022, the company now boasts a team of 14 agents and has facilitated millions of dollars in real estate sales.
Edgardo Guel, president, founder and broker of Casa Luxe Real Estate, started Casa Luxe Real Estate with passion and his sights set on success.
Their primary office, located in the Rivera Molino Plaza in the Romantic Zone, serves as a hub for real estate enthusiasts and investors, and it will soon-to-be-opened a second office at the soon to be opened EVA on Basilio Badillo Street. Once that office is open, the firm will begin to offer property management and vacation rental services.
“We’ve had an amazing few years of spectacular growth,” Guel told Out and About PV Magazine. “And so many more exciting things are on the horizon. One of the things we are most excited about is that
we are representing an amazing development on Basilio Badillo Street, The Cosmopolitan Boutique Residences.”
The Cosmopolitan Boutique Residences is currently in presale development and will be built at 314 Basilio Badillo Street in Zona Romantica, not far down the street from Act2PV.
“Casa Luxe Real Estate represents this new boutique development in The Romantic Zone, just steps from the famous Los Muertos Beach,” he said. “The Cosmopolitan is surrounded by all of your favorite PV restaurants, nightlife and shops. We are very excited to be associated with this new development.”
PV Luxury Capital & Vavi are developing the project, and Gustavo Contreras has been named sales director.
“Gustavo is the Luxury Developments Expert at Casa Luxe Real Estate,” Guel explained. “The Cosmopolitan is such an interesting new development. It offers all the big amenities clients love, in
" EDGARDO GUEL, PRESIDENT & BROKER
a boutique building setting. The project provides a high-end lifestyle with the exclusivity of only 19 residences, and one commercial space.”
Guel added that The Cosmopolitan will feature a rooftop deck & garden with a fully equipped gym, skybar, infinity pool, jacuzzi, fire-pit area, BBQ area, lounge area, and lobby. It also has a few lock-off two story units. With presale starting, you can find discounted prices on two-bedroom, two-bathroom units starting just under $399,000 USD. The two-story units are selling for just over $900,000 USD.
CASA LUXE ADDS SECOND OFFICE LOCATION IN EVA
The new office at EVA is expected to open in Spring, 2025, and will offer in-housen-house property management and vacation rentals to the owners and vacationers of EVA. That same office will provide those services to the new owners at The Cosmopolitan, which is just a few steps away on Basilio Badillo Street.
“We are very excited about offering these new services and to be on-site to be able to do so,” Guel said.
CURRENT REAL ESTATE OUTLOOK
And how is the current real estate market? Well for buyers, it’s a good time.
“Right now is the perfect time to buy as there is more inventory this year than years past and it's easier to find the right investment opportunity in this trendy tropical paradise,” he explained. “Puerto Vallarta is currently rated as the tourist destination with the highest Return of Investment (ROI), in vacation rentals in Latin America, according to the studies of Numbeo global database of Costs of Living.”
For sellers, it is also a great time to sell, especially with the approaching 2025 winter season.
“We are projecting high levels of buyers coming to find their dream home or vacation rental investment,” he added. “Whether you are buying or selling, you need to hire the most professional real estate representation available.” Guel would love for you to consider having Casa Luxe Real

Estate to represent you as a buyer or seller, but he said if you choose someone else, just make sure they are AMPI (Asociación Mexicana de Profesionales Inmobiliarios) certified.
AMPI has published ethical and fiduciary standards that its members are required to maintain. Those standards provide some assurance that the often complex process of a real estate transaction is less likely to go awry through a lack of due diligence on the part of the real estate professionals.
“Casa Luxe Real Estate provides the best representation for your real estate transactions,” he explained.
“We look out for your best interests and our skilled staff and agents have the experience needed to materialize your tropical real estate dreams in Puerto Vallarta and the Banderas Bay.”

The Palm Cabaret Celebrates a Quarter Century of Glamour
From Bingo Hall to Cabaret Icon, Mark Rome's Visionary Legacy
BY ZIA AHMAD
IT’S THE RAZZLE-DAZZLE, THE VIBRANT COSTUMES, IT’S THE MESMERIZING PERFORMANCES IT’S THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PALM CABARET.
For more than two decades, its patrons have witnessed the infectious enthusiasm of the entertainers as the lights dim and the music starts to play. The electric energy filling the atmosphere creates an immersive experience that transports the audience into a world of glamor and excitement. With each act more dazzling than the last, The Palm has become a haven of artistic expression and pure entertainment, leaving the audience in awe and longing for more.
But as this milestone approaches, it’s a time to reflect on the journey The Palm has taken over the years and its humble beginning—much of which is owed to Mark Rome’s unwavering dedication and passion for the arts— the brain behind The Palm.
Rome has had a fascinating history that led to his pivotal role in the creation and transformation of
The Palm in Puerto Vallarta. After spending 24 years as a process operator for an oil company in Canada, he took a sabbatical and landed in Mexico, circa 1999, and never left. His initial encounter with a lesbian couple led to him becoming a sperm donor and forming a close friendship with them.
“Having lived through the AIDS crisis era and losing many of my friends to the pandemic, I decided to help bring a new life into the world,” Rome shared with me the day I sat down with him for an interview.
Today he is a proud father of a daughter who graduated as a veterinarian in July 2024 in Queretaro.
And just as fascinating is the concept behind The Palm. Rome and his lesbian friends initially planned to open an evening BINGO hall to support local charities. However, before its opening, they learned they needed an expensive gambling license.
At that time, upon suggestion from one of Rome’s visiting friends to
transform the venue into a gay bar, the owners redesigned the space, painting the white walls red, adding palm tree-like beams, and creating a small stage. The Palm then became a gay video bar.
Months later, when a drag queen visiting from Ottawa, Ontario, asked to do a show—the owners agreed—unaware that it would become a regular feature on Fridays and Saturdays. After the performer returned home, inquiries about the show persisted.
Soon, Dirty Bitches in Town, a set of drag queens with legendary names like Diva Divine and Angelica began evolving the cabaret through their performances. Next came Ida Slapter, Carrie Chesnutt, and Kim Kuzma, who helped pave the way for live entertainment in PV.
But behind being a vibrant LGBTQ+ venue and a pillar of the Puerto Vallarta community today, The Palm has tales of challenges and obstacles Rome and his team had to overcome.
“They didn’t want the gays out on the street to be seen by the public eye,” I stopped taking notes and traded looks with Rome when he said that, sitting across from me.
During its early years, The Palm faced pushback from the community when it sought to build a terrace. At the time, an association of women voiced opposition to the terrace construction, expressing concerns about the visibility of the LGBTQ+ community.
They were apprehensive about having the gay community on display for the public to see. Despite this resistance, The Palm received support from the City Hall and found a way to navigate through the challenge. Ultimately, they proceeded with the construction, building the terrace over a long weekend and agreeing to accept a fine as part of the resolution. Another piece of interesting history.
Since then, over the years, The Palm has undergone several changes
in ownership with the business being sold and resold. However, amid these transitions, Rome has gradually distanced himself from owning the business and remained a consistent and dedicated figure in managing its operations. With each unsuccessful transition—owing to unwanted renovations, themes, and discontinued shows, Mark—who’d moved to Ajijic, would receive a call from the then landlord.
“You’re ready to take the keys to The Palm back? The voice on the other
end of the line would say,” Rome recalled smilingly. “And I would, at times reluctantly.”
His unwavering passion for the arts persuaded him to return to The Palm when Gustavo, the deceased landlord’s son—and his wife Adriana—the now owners of The Palm, visited Rome in Ajijic during the Covid pandemic.
Today, through his visionary leadership and hands-on approach, Mark, as a profit-sharing partner,
oversees the hiring and scheduling of the acts and tries to keep many intelligent, sensitive, and demanding artistic personalities happy.
When I chimed in that, “With art comes some ego naturally,” we both chuckled.
As we celebrate this milestone of 25 years of this iconic venue, we honor the enduring spirit of inclusivity, creativity, and love it has provided to the diverse talents as they create unforgettable performances.
Here's to many more years of dazzling shows, vibrant energy, and cherished memories at The Palm Cabaret.

Puerto Vallarta’s Act2PV has a new General Manager, who promises an unparalleled season of new shows, lower ticket prices and a vast expansion of events and programming.
David Sabella joined the management team in April 2024, bringing a wealth of experience and a clear vision for the theater’s

future, centered on rebuilding its reputation, fostering community engagement, and delivering exceptional entertainment experiences. Beyond his accomplishments on stage and in arts-administration, Sabella is revered as an author and masterteacher in music theater and contemporary voice techniques.
His presence adds another nuance to Act2PVs rich history, unfolding since Danny Mininni, the theater’s original co-founder, formed Act II Entertainment in 2012, and the theater produced its first show, The Rocky Horror Show, at The Palm.
The next year, Act II Entertainment moved to its current space at the intersection of Basilio Badillo and Insurgentes. As the business changed over the years, it became Act2PV, and In 2018, Alfonso Lopez and Oscar Cisneros were named by Mininni as partners. Mininni passed away unexpectedly in April 2022, leaving Lopez and Cisneros as its sole owners.
Co-owner Alfonso Lopez praised Sabella’s outreach to the community, and his ability to build bridges with both donors and community leaders.
“We’ve been looking for someone like David for at least two years,” said Lopez. “And we really couldn’t believe it. We thought, ‘Oh my gosh, this is it!’ And the more we talked, and the more he explained to us his experience and who he was, it was
" DAVID SABELLA
perfect. Exactly what we wanted was right in front of us. He appeared like magic, and at the right time too.”
Sabella has been working hard over the past several months, meeting with community leaders and donors, and at the same time planning for the new season, and overseeing many new physical changes.
The former bar/lounge has been transformed into its own entertainment destination. Reflecting an elegant art-deco era, reminiscent of the piano bar at the recently closed Incanto, Mary Ann’s Ovations Piano Bar (named after Sustaining Donor, Mary Ann Runaldue) now features nightly entertainment, in addition to the shows in both the Casa Karma Red Room Cabaret (sponsored by Sustaining Donor, Georgia Darehshori) and the Mainstage Theater.
And that’s not all. Sabella has big plans for enhancing the entire visitor experience, including adding an elevator, new sound equipment, an air conditioned ticketing booth at street level, new LED screens in each theater, new dressing-rooms for the artists, and Sharon’s Air Fry Kitchen, inspired by long-time donor Sharon Gerber Scherer, which will serve late night savory (yet healthy) comfort food.
It’s an ambitious plan, for which Sabella is recruiting help from the community, seeking subscribers, patrons, sustaining donors, and business partnerships for Act2PV. “We want to find partnerships that can benefit both the theater and the supporting business,” Sabella said.
One of those new business partnerships is Yamada Japanese Cuisine, which now serves Mary Anns’ Ovations Piano Bar, as an extended dining room. The dining experience is seamlessly provided by both Act2PV and Yamada wait staff. “come for dinner, stay for fun!”
CASANOVA TERRACE OUTDOOR BAR AND STAGGERED SHOWTIMES ENHANCE THE EXPERIENCE
Adding to the appeal is the new Casanova Terrace Bar (sponsored by Sustaining Donors David Gains & Ed Ziegler) which beautifully
overlooks Basilio Badillo with views of the southern mountains. The space includes a full bar, table seating and provides the perfect pre- or post-show hangout. And staggered showtimes (6 shows between 5pm and 9pm) mean there’s always something going on at Act2PV.
STAR POWER TAKES CENTER STAGE
In addition to the physical changes, Sabella has called upon a few long-time friends and colleagues to create the “Broadway Icons!” series, featuring the talents of Lorna Luft (daughter of Judy Garland), TONY would winner Lillias White, and Mexican born Broadway star Bianca Marroquin, Motown recording artist Sam Harris, as well as Broadway stars Karen Mason, Brent Barrett, and Sally Mayes.
Additionally, Act2PV patrons will be treated to the “Cabaret Icons” series, featuring the award winning talents of Renee Armand, Natalie Douglas, Jeff Harnar, Marieann Meringolo and PV favorites The New Belters (Seth Sikes and Nicholas King) as well as other celebrities of US and international Cabaret. The “Legends of Drag & Alt-Cabret” series, features RuPaul favorite Alexis Mateo, Boulet Brothers Dragula star Fantasia Royale Gaga, the reigning Dame Edna tribute artist, Michael Walters, Steve Brinberg as ‘Simply Barbra,’ The Kinsey Sicks, The VaudeVillains, and adult film star Jonah Wheeler and husband John Coons in “Nocturnal Omissions.” And the new “Mexico’s Best” series, features homegrown and returning favorites like, Cir Concierto, (Mr.) Lady Zen, Gloria Fiona, Lorena Peril, Delilah Beaucoup, and Keith Tynes (original member of The Platters), among others.**
“It’s an exciting season for the “New Act2PV”, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.”

More Music, More Magic: The Palm Cabaret Expanding
with Coco Cabaret
The Palm's New Sister Venue is Coming to Zona Romantica on Fco I. Madero
BY ZIA AHMAD
THE PALM CABARET IS GOING TO HAVE A SISTER VENUE, YOU ALL!
Throughout its decades-long history, The Palm has provided a nurturing and supportive environment for a diverse range of talents to showcase their artistry. From across-the-border talents such as Brian Justin Crum, ADA Vox, and Meghan Murphy to local stars like Eva Jimenez—renowned for her captivating performances in the
Pink Show—and Roy Cruz, known for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury, it has been the platform for these immensely talented artists to grow and flourish.
Naturally, this has led to a transformation from a business that once featured a single performance by the legendary Kim Kuzma at 10 p.m. to a now thriving operation with multiple shows staggered throughout the evening. And the inquiries from new talents to come and perform keep pouring in.
Hence the same minds behind The Palm Cabaret, both business and visionary, have chosen to establish a
new venue—a sibling to The Palm— called Coco Cabaret.
Mere four blocks from its current location, on Calle Fco. I. Madero, this Palm’s sibling will boast a larger seating capacity and a high ceiling to allow jaw-dropping gymnast choreography one would expect from a performance like The Pink Show. Many shows that have performed well will continue at the current location; a handful will move to the new spot. A detailed list of the shows was not available at the time of the completion of this article, but, we are happy to report that Devil Wear Payless, a Provincetown hit, is coming to the
Coco Cabaret on February 25th. The play will also be joined by Latoya London—a talented vocalist and American Idol Season 3 alumna— Well Strung who’d be returning after a few years of hiatus, and Megan Murphy performing at both venues.
Performances will be held at different times at The Palm and the Coco Cabaret to avoid competing against each other. The Palm shows will be scheduled for 5:00 PM, 7:00 PM, and 9:00 PM, while the Coco Cabaret performances will start at 6:00 PM, 8:00 PM, and 10:00 PM. Posters and banners will also be color-coded to distinguish each venue.
LIX-PM.COM / lixhomemadeicecream
BASILIO BADILLO 168. EMILIANO ZAPATA
MORELOS 128 INT 4-8. MALECON
LAGO VICTORIA 141-3. FLUVIAL
But wait! It gets even better! Chris Lopez, the talented name behind the Beyonce and the Madonna shows, will collaborate with the management team at the Coco Cabaret and will have the artistic freedom to transform Coco into a bar/nightclub after hours with live singing and acrobatic shows, a concept he witnessed in Mexico City. Once the last organized performance is finished at 11:00 P.M, Coco Cabaret will operate as an entertainment club until the close.
Mark Rome will stay involved in the scheduling and booking of the acts at The Palm and Coco Cabaret, ensuring all shows start promptly as scheduled.
“There’s so much to a show such as dancers and backup singers,” Rome shared with me, “that unless you knock on the backstage door at eight, the performance isn’t gonna start at eight.”
Then he laughed; the same infectious laugh and a sense of humor that had carried him through times when things had been stressful running The Palm.
“Even when I am angry, I smile. I try to keep things positive through every conversation and end it with a similar note,” he said.
Like the times Mark jokingly fibbed to a bewildered artist it was time to perform, and they hadn’t had their wig on. Or the times when a new performer—a drag queen— would make their debut on stage and Mark, standing next to them, would quip, “You’re not gonna wear your earrings tonight?”
Despite enduring glaring looks and a mouthful of curses from the artist, Rome said it worked every time to calm their nerves seconds before the music began.
He laughed. “If we’re not having fun doing it, then why are we doing it? I would say to them.”
One can expect the same humor, lightheartedness, and stress management from Mark Rome as he takes on Coco Cabaret which will open on November 1st, 2024, one month after the 2024-25 season opening of the Palm.

for its launch its marketing team opted for a more fitting title for an event held in a paradise, something that represented the true spirit of Puerto Vallarta and the beautiful diversity of the LGBTQ+ community. Today, embracing Bear Pride under the Bearadise umbrella, this event aims to bring love, inclusion, friendship, and body positivity through Bearsgiving on that weekend starting November 29.
Christian Serrano has long been an active member of the diverse LGBTQ+ community here in Puerto Vallarta. From owning and hosting the Gay Vallarta Bar-Hopping Tour to forming a local bear group called Vallarta Ossos to being a pioneer
of the LGBTQ+ Alliance initiative, this Cancun native has spent years building a community where all are welcome, where inclusivity is the main theme, where fresh ideas are encouraged. A lover of music, photography, and travel, he wants his followers to see all that Vallarta has to offer.
“So many visit Puerto Vallarta but never leave Zona Romantica,” he shared with me the afternoon we sat down for an interview, enjoying a fresh cup of coffee. “There is much more to see beyond this neighborhood.”
And Serrano’s yearning to showcase Puerto Vallarta for all that it holds is
the uniqueness behind planning Bearadise this year. The Bearsgiving event kicks off on the 29th and continues through December 1st. On its first day at 2:30 P.M., a Love Boat, a fifty-one-foot catamaran will whisk away attendees, limited to forty, to open sea on a five-hour cruise with music, an open bar, and food on its way to the exclusive Majahuitas beach where clothing will be optional. Transportation from the Marina back to the Romantic Zone will be provided.
The following day, participants will board a doubledecker party bus from a designated bar and tour the sites south of Puerto Vallarta before venturing toward areas north of the city.
And last but not least, Sunday promises a Bearadise beach party at the private Las Caletitas Beach where it all comes together. Staying true to its main themes of body positivity and embracing sexuality, the event will be clothing optional. It will be a day of soaking sun, enjoying a swim in the blue, refreshing water, and sneaking into a secret garden to be playful.
To all the free-spirited individuals seeking an unforgettable experience surrounded by camaraderie, love, and celebration of diversity, Bearadise and Brawny Bear Weekend in Puerto Vallarta are the events to look forward to this year.
With a plethora of activities, breathtaking locations, and the chance to connect with like-minded people, these events promise a liberating experience. So embrace the inclusivity, soak in the positive vibes, and get ready to make some unforgettable memories this American Thanksgiving weekend in Puerto Vallarta.

Big Bears, Bigger Fun:
Brawny Bear Weekend Is Back!
BY ZIA AHMAD
CUDDLES, SNUGGLES, BEAR HUGS … OH MY!
Prepare to witness the arrival of the friendly, happy-go-lucky male specimens, the gay bears, during the fifth annual Brawny Bear Weekend in Puerto Vallarta around American Thanksgiving week in November 2024.
The term ‘bear’, which originated in the 80s within the gay circle, has been used to describe a subculture of larger, hairier, and often more masculine gay men who identified with certain physical and behavioral traits. The bear community quickly grew in the early 90s and social groups and events began catering to it.
These gatherings provided platforms for inclusivity for men who’d felt marginalized in mainstream gay gatherings in the past based on their interests or appearances. Over the years, this community has continued evolving, embracing diversity and camaraderie among its members. And today, the bear identity is celebrated in various social events, bear runs, and bear-themed activities worldwide.
And the Brawny Bear Weekend is no exception as it promises to have several fun-filled activities planned for these larger-than-life, fun-loving men looking forward to laughing, eating, drinking, and dancing. Open to many bear types such as polar, grizzlies, cubs, and even otters and RATS—rapidly aging twinks—yes, that is a thing—the event has plans for everyone.
With Brawny Bear now In its fifth year, Brian Kent Productions has partnered with Mantamar Beach Club and Industry Nightclub, promising four days of daytime pool events, T-dances, and house music starting November 21st.
The event celebrates the bear community and offers an inclusive and fun-filled experience for larger men and their admirers. Attendees can look forward to mingling with friends and enjoying a vibrant atmosphere.
It is also Brian’s birthday weekend so be sure to offer him a birthday wish if you see him at the Meet-andGreet at One Sixe One PV, the bar he owns.
When Kent informed me over the phone that house music is offered only once a year in Puerto Vallarta during the Brawny Bear Weekend, I could sense the excitement in his voice. Renowned DJs such as Karsten Sollors and Tony Moran will offer chest-thumping beats during the nightly events at the Industry Nightclub, he said. You might also catch a glimpse of Brian at the DJ booth entertaining and mixing electronic dance music.
In contrast to Beef Dip, another yearly bear event that has grown significantly over the years, Kent told me, the Brawny Bear offers intimate energy. This event promises a comfortable setting that allows attendees to mingle among friends and carry a conversation, he added.
The events are planned from November 21st to the 24th, but guests could stay through the following week into Thanksgiving on November 28. Encuentra nuestra versión en español en: outandaboutpv.com

GALA VARO POSES FOR PHOTOGRAPHER
OSCAR ALMEIDA AT THE PRIDE 2024 PINK DINNER
BY JERRY JONES
A DERELICT BUILDING IN PUERTO VALLARTA WAS ALL THAT STOOD BETWEEN CALIFORNIA INTERIOR DESIGNER JACOB SCHERER AND HIS DREAM OF A TROPICAL PARADISE.
With a keen eye for design and a relentless entrepreneurial spirit, Scherer transformed the structure into the stunning Cuale Condos, a testament to his ability to blend historic charm with modern luxury.

The dilapidated building that sat on the corner of Aquiles Serdan and Camichin, was deemed by many as a tear-down. But it presented an unconventional canvas for Scherer, and a challenge to save the structure.
With a deep-rooted passion for historic preservation, he recognized the building's potential to become a cornerstone of the evolving neighborhood. He saw what would soon become the Cuale Condos, and turned that vision into a haven of modern comfort and timeless elegance. The result: Cuale Condos, a 15-unit boutique hotel boasting spacious apartments, executive offices, and a rooftop oasis complete with a pool, jacuzzi, and breathtaking city views.
Scherer, an interior designer with Daluso Design, is from Mountain View, California and moved to Puerto Vallarta in 2016 with Ulises Zavala, who owns Uli Studio.
After constructing a beautiful mini hacienda called Casa Da Lusso near the market on Lazaro Cardenas, Jacob continued to work as president of his company from Mexico.
However, he soon realized he had no plans to leave Mexico and decided he needed an income source for his new life. To accomplish this, he sold his Mexican house and U.S. company
and, along with his longtime best friend and business partner Jim Lewis, a commercial developer with J.V. Lewis Enterprises, Inc., they purchased a building on the corner of Aquiles Serdan and Camichin. The building was sourced and purchased through Ryan Donner of Coldwell Banker, now the broker and owner of Donner and Associates.
“At the time, the building was very run-down, and many considered it a tear-down. However, the neighborhood was in transition, and I saw opportunity,” Scherer said. “After reviewing the structure with an engineer, we decided to reinforce the building and foundations, reusing many of the existing details. The concept was to maintain Mexican authenticity while combining modern conveniences and amenities.”
Jacob and Jim embarked on the design process, with Jacob leveraging his years of architectural experience to begin the project in full 3D.
“Together with Ariel Oliver (now the owner of his own company, www.olaastudio), we were able to create a detailed set of plans and 3D concept drawings, sourcing all materials from Mexico,” Scherer explained. “Many elements, such as the tiles, were custom-made using
handmade cement Mexican mosaics. Once the plans were completed, we contracted Laboratorio de Arquitectura Mexicana (LAM), a local construction and architecture company, to handle the heavy lifting of reinforcing the building and completing all rooftop and exterior details. Simultaneously, we worked with a separate construction team, Abikar, to remodel the interiors unit by unit as finances permitted.”
Cuale Condos is operated by Jacob Scherer and his partner Alberto Retano (@onater_albertho), along with a dedicated cleaning and maintenance team.
This gay-owned and operated highend boutique condo hotel offers full staff and numerous high-end amenities at an affordable price.
Located in the heart of the Romantic Zone, Cuale Condos provides guests with a true Mexican experience, complete with all the comforts and conveniences, while being only a short, flat walk to all the fun and sun that the Romantic Zone of Puerto Vallarta has to offer. Catering to both a Mexican and expat vacation rental community, Cuale Condos continues to impress clients from around the globe.

Blondies Season 10: Love, Slushies, and Fashion
A Poolside Romance Leads to a Thriving Business
BY JERRY JONES

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT IS OFTEN A CLICHÉ, BUT FOR SHAWN MCGUIRE AND DINO ALBERTI, IT WAS THE REAL DEAL.
Their story began at a chance meeting poolside here in Puerto Vallarta, both of them on vacation. It was an encounter that blossomed into a whirlwind romance and a shared dream.
That dream became what is now known as Blondies, Puerto Vallarta’s unique slushie bar. Nine years after opening, the two have built a stylish and eclectic hotspot, the perfect blend of cocktails and fashion, in three different locations. Starting their tenth season, the two are looking forward to a celebration to mark their upcoming tenth anniversary.
The day the two meet at the poolside, Shawn had asked Dino out for dinner. After that fateful meeting, and despite living worlds apart, the distance wasn’t going to keep them apart - Shawn was living in Kansas City, Missouri and Dino was living in Lima, Peru.
“We visited each other a half dozen times in our respective countries and within a year decided to make the paradise where we met our permanent home,” Shawn explained.
“We started building Blondies a few months later.”
And since their chance meeting, they’ve been virtually inseparable. They have been able to seamlessly blend their personal and professional lives, a true testament to their deep love for each other and their business dream, Blondies.
“It's weirdly not challenging at all,” Shawn said. “We’ve been pretty inseparable since we met, and separating the business and personal stuff is next to impossible. It’s like we’re on a rollercoaster, strapped in side by side and it's a brilliant, exhilarating and often unpredictable ride. We love it and each other enough to make it all work.”
Their hard work has paid off. Over the past nine years Blondies has grown from a single location to now three and added a line of fashion (all of it hand made here in Puerto Vallarta) and merchandise - and yet
they have managed to stay true to their original dream.
That dream was to build a bar through a combination of art, music, cocktails, in a conceptual space reflecting the couple's love of pop art. All of it inspired by Shawn’s time in the United States where he worked as an artist, musician and bartender. They sought to combine those three elements into an immersive experience.
“We wanted to create a beautiful, clean and safe space. We always said it was like a cool cocktail party where everyone is invited,” Shawn said. “We grew into the fashion some four years in.”
And thus the original Blondies Loft + Slushbar opened in October 2015 at its present location, Pulpito 115 (on the North East corner of Amapas and Pulpito). The two-story loft style building, just steps from the beach, offered slushies, made with premium liquors and fresh ingredients.
The name for the business came about by coincidence, Shawn told us with a laugh.
“I had some Mexican friends that took to calling me blondie when they saw me around town,” he explained. “And the first time I visited Dino in Peru, his friends called him Rubio, which is the Spanish word for ‘blonde’. We thought that was really funny and thus, the name Blondies was born. It's not meant to specifically celebrate blonde people, the comic book character, or the punk band, lol, it's just our nickname.”
As bar owners Shawn and Dino have cultivated a different kind of allure. Unlike many local business owners who become synonymous with their establishments, the duo prefers to let their businesses shine without overshadowing them.
And it’s not that the two are introverts - they both enjoy a good party - their blending into the fabric of Puerto Vallarta was intentional.
“We saw some other local businesses that were thriving, but their owners were such a big part of the energy and allure,” Shawn explained. “That can be a great thing, but it can be a not so great

thing when you need or are ready to step away at any time.
“Do I feel special when I know and am greeted by the owner at any business? Absolutely! Do I feel a little disappointed if I arrive and they aren't there? I hate to admit it, but a little. I guess we wanted to avoid this scenario by making our employees and the bar the actual celebrities.”
He said that the employees and the bar were “cooler than he and Dino.”
“It just gives us a little space and it’s fun to be a fly on the wall at our own bars,” he said. “A little mystery is good, no?”
LOS OTROS BLONDIES
In October 2019 the couple opened the second location of Blondies, at Basilio Badillo 258, offering the same delicious slushies and cocktails, several blocks away from Blondies Loft. Six months after opening, the Covid Pandemic struck.
Los Otros Blondies wasn’t part of the couple's original plan, but they saw an opportunity and went for it.
“We were just hoping to stay afloat at one location, our ambitions were pretty modest,” Shawn explained.
“After a couple of years, we started to realize that we had something special with Blondies Loft. Opening Los Otros Blondies five seasons after the original Blondies was a dream, and now adding our third location, Más Blondies, for season 10 just feels correct.”
THE PANDEMIC
Like many businesses, the Covid Pandemic was challenging for the business and the couple. The two bars had a staff of 25 people, who were suddenly without work.
“OOF,” Shawn said when I brought up the Pandemic.
“The pandemic was definitely the Olympics of resilience, perseverance, integrity and ingenuity,” he said.
He went on to explain that they, like all businesses in Puerto Vallarta, experienced a six-month closure, followed by smaller closures and crippling restrictions.
“We paid the staff their full salary throughout,” he said. “With no help from the government. Like all businesses, we had many challenges. We were paying two leases, staff, benefits, utilities, accountants, licenses, etc… It was a lot, but we powered through and slept well knowing our crew was ok.”
But he went on to say that perhaps there was a silver lining in the dark Covid clouds. The downtime allowed the couple to think and plan for the future, and experiment with new ideas. And that’s where the fashion component of Blondies was born.
“It was during that time off that Dino and I started building the Blondies Design Studio, where we now design, print, and sew all of our clothing and produce our merchandise,” he explained. “99% of everything you see in our stores is handmade in the studio above Los Otros Blondies.”
There is now a team of six full time employees that focus on fashion and designs. Inside Blondies Design Studio you’ll find sewing machines
humming, turning an amazing array of colorful fabrics into one of their popular lines of clothing.
While the bar atmosphere drew upon Shawn’s previous passions, the clothing and merchandise put Dino’s business passions to work. He has been instrumental in navigating all the behind the scenes leases, licenses, and logistics. Shawn said that without Dino, neither the bar or design studio would have happened. “I make the car look pretty and he makes sure the wheels don`t fall off,” says Shawn.
“We are constantly learning new techniques and taking it to the next level,” he added. “Learning an entirely new profession was the silver lining, if there was one.”
THE EMPLOYEES
The bar now has approximately 40 employees - and Shawn and Dino both emphasized that their employees “are everything.” They know how challenging it can be to get and keep good employees, and they also have been in the position that the employees are, both having

worked for someone else. “We really try to empower our employees without being overbearing,” Shawn said. “I think providing everything they possibly need to do their best jobs and be their best selves is the goal. We have a wonderful team at all levels of experience and seniority, so they are great at sharing knowledge and supporting each other. Everyone is equally important to our success.”
Shawn said for new business owners his advice would be “to show, not tell, and always lead with integrity combined with compassion.”
Shawn said he worked most of his career in different industries where even health care was not offered through work. And he remembers struggling at times with not having the right support or tools to be successful.
“That's stressful,” he said. “We try to show respect and treat our employees as professionals with a career, not just a seasonal hospitality job. We offer incentives
and bonuses. Our employees receive 10% of our profits each year. We celebrate with them and we also work with them through challenges, professionally as well as personally and I think we all learn and grow together through communication and trust. I’m sure there are a few ex-employees that would disagree, but we’re pretty proud of our track record.”
CELEBRATING TEN SEASONS OF FABULOUSNESS
As Blondies kicks off its tenth season anniversary celebration (2024-2025), Shawn and Dino have developed some interesting plans that they hope will keep their loyal patrons excited and engaged.
“We really want this year to be a celebration throughout the season. You'll see some special events and surprises during high season, and we're absolutely dropping our most ambitious collection of clothing and merchandise since we began,” Shawn said. “We figured to celebrate 10 seasons, why not 100 new designs? We’ll start adding the new

designs to all three boutiques in October, and we’re pretty excited to show them off!”
WORKING AND LIVING IN A GAY MECCA
Life in Puerto Vallarta is undoubtedly fun and unparalleled to living anywhere else. But for those who make it their home, and work here, the reality of balancing work and play can be a regular challenge.
Shawn explained that many people think living in such a paradise is a perpetual vacation. It’s anything but, and as immigrants in a foreign
county, the challenges of running a business can be a bit overwhelming.
“It’s even difficult for Mexicans to run businesses here and I'd say as immigrants, it comes with a myriad of additional challenges that most people would never think of,” he explained.
But a support system of fellow business owners in Puerto Vallarta helps, he added, and said it was amazing that all business owners are constantly working hard to make the city the world class gay destination that it has become.
And now for 10 seasons there have been thousands of people who have enjoyed the hard work the duo have put in to provide the unique place that Blondies has become.
“THANK YOU,” Shawn said with a huge smile. “Your smiles, seeing you make friends, lovers and memories is the reason we do this, for as long as we can.”

A Night Out with Art: Join Puerto Vallarta's Weekly Gathering A 29-Year Wednesday Tradition That Brings Together Art, Culture and Community
BY ZIA AHMAD
ASIDE FROM BEING A CHARMING COASTAL TOWN KNOWN FOR ITS STUNNING BEACHES AND VIBRANT CULTURE, PUERTO VALLARTA IS ALSO HOME TO A THRIVING ART SCENE.
One of the must-see events for art enthusiasts is the Puerto Vallarta ArtWalk, a weekly gathering that showcases the town's rich artistic heritage and talent.
Dating back to 1995, the art walk was established by a long-time resident of Puerto Vallarta, Barbara Peters. It was initially a group of five-member galleries. Before the ArtWalk pamphlet as we’ve seen it, those galleries collaborated to print an art guide. Back then, Centro was a more vibrant neighborhood than Zona Romantica, and people frequently explored the area.
Today, held every Wednesday evening from 6 to 10 p.m. between October and June, the Puerto Vallarta ArtWalk invites locals and visitors to explore the town's diverse selection of galleries, studios, and artists' cooperatives.
Led by Carolina Orozco from Galeria de Ollas—the current president of the ArtWalk—member galleries meet a couple of times a year, plan the pamphlet, and aim to organize more focused events.
“ArtWalk gallery members have something in common,” Orozco shared with me in an email exchange. “We love art. Mexican art is rich and expressive, and each gallery dedicates its space to different media trying to share this richness.”
As president of the ArtWalk, Carolina ensures that the brochure, website, and distribution are on time and in the hands of the visitors. The member galleries are organized as a group and share with visitors not just the business of art, but the art of galleries working in unison, according to her.
“During all these years I have enjoyed bringing this group together; even when we have different points of view, we make decisions as a group,” she wrote.
I met Santiago Redmond, one of the owners of a participating gallery—the Galeria Browne—located on Calle Leona Vicario. Together with his business and life partner, David E. Brown, and assistant Jorge Joya, he participates in organizing the ArtWalk. That is in addition to managing the operational aspects of their gallery such as art curation, client-facing, and consultancy.
The couple, from Chicago, had been vacationing in Vallarta for over seventeen years. They had attended the ArtWalk, and, with each visit, the need to showcase and appreciate the art in Mexico had gotten stronger in them. Today, other art aficionados and gallery owners in the area share their sentiments and take part in running
" CAROLINA OROZCO CURRENT PRESIDENT OF ARTWALK
an event that provides a unique opportunity to engage with Puerto Vallarta's flourishing art community and discover a wide range of artworks, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and jewelry.
During ArtWalk nights, Santiago shared with me while I fumbled through my bag to fetch a pair of reading glasses, that more than two hundred people visit the gallery.
The majority of Galeria Browne’s clientele are from the United States, with approximately seventy percent representing the LGBTQ+ community, he added.
“We have tailored our gallery to cater to this demographic,” he said.
During the ArtWalk, participants can stroll through the streets of Puerto Vallarta's historic downtown area and visit various participating venues. Some galleries offer complimentary cocktails, fostering a welcoming atmosphere as attendees interact with gallery owners and artists.
When asked about the selection criteria of an artist to present their art, Redmond emphasized that getting wall space at the gallery is competitive, hence they have to be selective about the artists they showcase based on their work and personality, as well as whether the art piece fits with their gallery theme and if it is likely to sell.
“Connecting with the right artist can happen at an art fair, through social media, and even by artists approaching us directly,” he further explained.
The participating galleries often feature the works of both established and emerging artists, providing a comprehensive overview of the local and international art scene. Visitors can expect to encounter traditional Mexican art, contemporary pieces, and experimental creations, ensuring a diverse experience for art lovers of all tastes and preferences.
To my inquiry on any new plans for this year's ArtWalk, Santiago informed me that individual galleries usually plan their events, but there might be more street fairtype street closures for foot traffic, as it currently happens once a year.
I could sense a hint of pride in Redmond’s voice when he shared
with me that the Galeria Browne aims to provide a piece of Mexico through art to its customers to take home. It was shortly before he emphasized that bright colors, textures, and abstract expressionist pieces with a sense of joy and happiness were the main themes for the gallery. The majority of the artists showcasing their art at the gallery come from Mexico, he went on.
“The gallery can ship art worldwide, and shipping is relatively affordable.”
Beyond the artistic offerings, the Puerto Vallarta ArtWalk is a great way to immerse oneself in the town's vibrant culture. The event captures the essence of Puerto Vallarta as a hub of creativity, where local and international artists contribute to the town's everevolving artistic landscape.
Whether you're a seasoned art aficionado or simply appreciate the beauty of creative expression,
by:
the Puerto Vallarta ArtWalk offers a visually stimulating experience. By meandering through the cobblestone streets and engaging with the diverse array of artworks, participants can gain a deeper appreciation for the town's artistry and cultural vibrancy.
With its unique blend of art, culture, and community, the Puerto Vallarta ArtWalk remains a cherished tradition that continues to captivate and inspire visitors from near and far.

they’d witnessed a deer jumping into the fire, symbolizing the meeting of death and new life. Today, a shaman visits the site, makes offerings to the gods, and prays.
This is the type of experience Ezeqkiel Lozano—the entrepreneur behind Vallarta Experiences— promises to deliver to his clients which goes beyond the hikes and breathtaking views and discovers the essence and history of a place.
Ezeqkiel, a lover of photography and travel, has embarked on several personal and business ventures. Still, one common theme binds them: his relentless pursuit of a deeper human connection, spirituality, and cultural exploration.
He refers to his business ventures as his children.
“I have four kids,” he informed me the day I joined him at Juicy Drags, one of his offspring, “and the fifth one is on its way.”
Ezeqkiel and his husband moved to Puerto Vallarta four years ago from Mexico City, where they still run an Airbnb and manage Brains and Play, a training and certification business for adults to improve strategy, brain activity, and talent enhancement using Lego blocks. Like children playing with toys, participants bring out their creativity that aims to transform human behavior in a positive direction, Ezeqkiel said.
“Before coming to P.V.—our first visit—we considered moving to Bali, Indonesia, as our happy place”, Ezeqkiel recalled.
But they fell in love with the mountains, the beach, the sand, and the brilliant blue of the Pacific surrounding this magical town. Soon, they set roots in P.V. by opening Juicy Drags, their third child, a smoothie bar & bistro, also a safe space for anyone looking to explore drag with makeup, wigs, and costumes.
Ezeqkiel knew there was more to the city than the parties and lounging by the beach. And despite his love for the alluring LGBTQ+ scene in Zona Romantica, he began exploring nearby areas around P.V. such as Bucerias, Punta Mita, Sayulita, and San Pancho to the north, Chimo and Yelapa to the south, and San Sebastian in the mountains.
He longed to embrace human experiences and cultures, not just visit famous landmarks. This inspired him to create Vallarta Experiences, combining his love for photography and travel into a new business venture he described as his "fourth child."
“I wanted to show Vallarta not just through my eyes, but through my love of the city,” he said as he sat down after handing me ice-cold water that warm summer day. “Vallarta can be anything you want it to be,” he added. “Just be happy.”
Aside from the hikes to the Malpaso beach and visits to historical places like San Pancho, Vallarta Experiences has incorporated alluring offers such as Drag Queen Friday and Katrina For A Day that separate it from similar businesses.
With the spirit behind Juicy Drags, Drag Queen Friday aims to allow clients to connect with their inner feminine selves—a two-day experience where they accompany a seasoned drag queen who assists with exploring their character in drag. The following day is about having an experience as a drag queen.
A client, a trained opera vocalist, loved it so much, Ezeqkiel said, that they decided to be an opera singer in drag by having their show in P.V. soon.
If drag is not your thing, you can choose to be a Katrina for a day and have a photoshoot session, according to Ezeqkiel.
Vallarta Experiences makes the experience even more fun by including the Red Door Mobile Bar in these adventures.
Ezeqkiel has seamlessly incorporated his passion for photography into his business. From capturing spontaneous moments of the humans of Mexico City through street photography to now focusing on seizing the expressions of his unsuspecting clients of all ages and body sizes—male and female, nude or clothed—he engages them in deep conversations, bringing out their true emotions seconds before pressing the camera button. He loves seeing the joy on their faces as he shares the results with them later.
Ezekiel says it is enchanting to witness them overcome any insecurities and enjoy the freedom nudity delivers in an artistic fashion. Vallarta Experiences has many bookings on the calendar, and Ezeqkiel plans to expand his business beyond P.V. to other cities such as Guadalajara & Tequila.
But he isn’t done yet. His next adventure, his fifth child, will be a joint venture with one of his best friends, Juan Carlos—the Xiekari Healing Center & Spa—a space specializing not just for the body but for the healing of the mind and soul.
So get ready to meet a shaman and

a medium—who will transport you to a realm beyond the human mind’s comprehension—because that’s what Ezeqkiel Lozano, a lover of nature and culture, aims to bring to the already magical town of Puerto Vallarta. A deep spiritual awakening.
