THE STORIES SHAPING PUERTO VALLARTA

Welcome to the Winter/Spring 2025 issue of O&APV. We’re so excited to be celebrating the 25th Silver Anniversary of international star Miss Conception. We share with you her story from her first drag show to her latest celebration show as she pulls out her favorite characters that she has parodied over the last 25 years.

We talk with Joshua Rapport, who is a young entrepreneur managing two businesses, and an international marathon runner. Joshua owns and manages RE/MAX Romantica, a real estate agency, and Cross Border Investment (CBI), which offers mortgage and legal services for clients purchasing properties throughout Mexico. He opened CBI in 2011 and launched RE/MAX Romantica in November 2023. It’s a great cover story on one of the up and coming stars of Puerto Vallarta.

Our final cover story is the fascinating life of Mikel Alvarez, who opened ThrIVe MedSpa three years ago and in such a short time, has built a world class business. He started visiting Puerto Vallarta some 30 years ago, and embodied its lifestyle and people. He discovered while researching his family history that his great grandfather was Mexican.

Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, he attended the University of Toronto before participating in an exchange program at the University of Guadalajara in 2003. After completing his degree, 23-yearold Rappaport traveled across Mexico for about six months before eventually settling in Puerto Vallarta, where he began working in the hospitality industry.

It was there when, through networking, Joshua received an invitation to work as a mortgage broker, marking the beginning of his real estate journey. Today, he owns and manages two companies: RE/MAX Romantica, a real estate agency, and Cross Border Investment (CBI), which offers mortgage and legal services for clients purchasing properties throughout Mexico. He opened CBI in 2011 and launched RE/MAX Romantica in November 2023. His desire to learn something new prompted his return to real estate while managing CBI, and it was during a chance dinner conversation that he came upon the opportunity to open the RE/MAX franchise.

Rappaport's love for Puerto Vallarta had blossomed during his time in Mexico as part of the exchange program. In 2003, he visited the city on vacation twice and ultimately decided to set roots in this magical town. Reflecting on his life, Joshua recalled taking the bold step of relocating at the age of 23, eager to discover what life had in store for him.

We debated when it’s more courageous to make a life change: starting early and charting a course on a blank canvas, or later in life, uprooting a well-established life in search of something new. He thought it was the latter that was more challenging.

Joshua’s personal life mirrors the energy of his professional endeavors, overflowing with activity and passion. He has completed nine marathons throughout his adult

WHEN IT COMES TO WEARING MULTIPLE HATS—BOTH IN HIS PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL LIFE—

life, each one a testament to his dedication and resilience. During our meeting, he was excitedly preparing for his next challenge, only a couple of weeks away: the iconic marathon in New York City.

Josh completed the NYC marathon running through all 5 boroughs. His disciplined and regimented lifestyle has taken him on these exhilarating journeys, running 26.2 miles through places like Puerto Vallarta, Boston, Chicago, New York, and Tokyo.

jNow, with an adventurous spirit, he has set his sights on Berlin, planning to tackle yet another marathon in 2025. This will complete his journey to become a member of the very few who have finished the prestigious Abbot 6 World Major Marathons. When asked about his relentless drive to keep participating in these races, Rappaport shared that it’s the profound sense of camaraderie that envelops him at the starting line, connecting him with fellow runners from around the globe. He expressed how the process of training—accumulating thousands of miles in preparation—culminates in an unforgettable marathon experience. It’s the sensation

of being surrounded by people worldwide that he loves along with the goal-based aspect of it.

“It’s fascinating how running a marathon eventually dictates your life,” he said. “Especially six weeks before the date.”

Rappaport attributes much of his structured and organized personality in managing CBI and RE/ MAX to running.

“Being ambitious is part of my personality,” he went on. “Running has helped me formulate how to set my goals.”

Joshua’s determination to accomplish his objectives became evident when he described the process of opening Cross Border Investment. After working for a mortgage company for five years, he decided to branch out and started the business from the guest bedroom of his apartment. As the saying goes, nothing worth pursuing comes easy, and that was true for Rappaport as well. Soon after launching CBI in 2011, the financial crisis caused most mortgage lenders to disappear. However, his perseverance and innovative

approach, particularly in working with Mexican national banks to facilitate Canadian and American financing, helped the business thrive into what it is today.

One of the many advantages of managing both companies is that RE/MAX Romantica clients have a very close relationship with their real estate agent & their CBI Mortgage Originator, as well as RE/MAX clients can benefit from CBI’s legal team and have their expertise involved in all aspects of the transaction. This means they have in-house attorneys who draft sale contracts, review property deeds, prepare legal documents, etc. This structure allows Rappaport to provide a layer of security for transactions not offered in many offices, with RE/MAX agents focusing on market trends and promoting properties, not working their way through contracts and reviewing legal documents.

“This ensures proper due diligence and gives clients peace of mind that the sales contract has the proper clauses the buyer needs to be protected. Sellers also benefit greatly from CBI’s legal expertise, as CBI will review to ensure that the

property documents are all in order, guaranteeing a quicker closing and will also work with the seller to provide the lowest capital gains calculation possible.”

Another benefit Rappaport mentioned of having CBI is the availability of mortgage lending options for Americans and Canadians. When a prospective buyer inquiries about mortgage options, RE/MAX agents have close relationships with the expert mortgage originations at CBI, enhancing the service provided to clients.

Having the corporate backing of reputable brands like RE/MAX, combined with expert legal and mortgage services, distinguishes Joshua Rappaport and his team from other real estate businesses in Puerto Vallarta. This aligns with Joshua’s vision of being a business director rather than being a sales agent who owns a real estate company, as he focuses on offering his agents guidance and education to help them succeed.

A QUARTERCENTURY OF DAZZLING ILLUSION

FROM HUMBL C B C GINNINGS TO INT C RNATIONAL STARDOM:

MISS CONC C PTION'S 25-Y C AR JOURN C Y

IF YOU’VE NEVER GOTTEN THE CHANCE TO SEE MISS CONCEPTION - A PUERTO VALLARTA LEGEND - PERFORM, YOU’RE MISSING OUT. SHE HAS HONED HER CRAFT OVER THE PAST 25 YEARS, AND THIS FEMALE DELUSIONIST IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.

Her newest show, which is a tribute to her 25th year performing, the “25th Year Silver Anniversary Spectacular”, can be seen at The Palm Cabaret on Monday at 9 p.m. or Thursday at 7 p.m. (with additional shows in February - please check for times and dates). You’ll see Miss Conception changeright before your eyes - multiple times into familiar movie, Broadway and television characters. She’s picked the best of the best over her 25-yearcareer, and you’ll end up laughing and singing alone to her live vocals.

Miss Conception's journey to stardom wasn't always destined. Kevin Levesque, Miss Conception, stumbled upon his drag persona at a drunken party. A suggestion by his friends, who said “your name should be "Miss Conception”, resonated with him, and a legend was born.

Kevin's journey into the world of drag began with a daring leap of faith. His friends Jack and Ben dared him to participate in a drag show, and with a borrowed wig, a cheap dress, and the guidance of his drag mother, Ricky Raunch, he took the stage. That performance marked the beginning of a remarkable career at 19-years-old.

“A friend had dared me to enter a drag show performance,” he said. “I got a wig and had it styled. I bought a dress from the $20 store and drag mother Ricky Raunch

stepped up to help after Lena Over was too busy - and that’s how it all started. And I must say, I did really well in that first performance.”

25 years later Miss Conception has become an international superstar, performing an astonishing 300-daysa-year. She spends her winters in residence at The Palm in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and her spring/ summers residency in Provincetown, Massachusetts. In between those dates she performs on cruises, traveling all over the world.

On the high seas, Miss Conception is in demand as a featured performer with Brand G Vacations, Concierge Travel, AquaFest Cruises, and Out Adventures.

KEVIN’S LIFE

Kevin’s goal in life was to just perform - he loved being on stage in front of people - and he knew he loved to make them laugh.

He grew up in Mississauga, Ontario, the son of Trisha and Bob Levesque. His parents, along with his sisters (Kristina and Nicole Levesque), have always been supportive. When he joined a youth hockey league at the age of six, at their urging. But they then supported his decision when he traded in his ice skates for a pair of dance shoes.

As an adult his family has followed his career as a drag queen. His parents came to all his shows and even though his mother passed away during Covid, he continues to have the support of his father and two sisters. He met his soonto-be husband Kieran Thomas online during Covid - the two will get married in Puerto Vallarta in March, 2025.

When Kevin was 14-years-old, he joined the Mississauga Youth Theatre and landed his first role as Bobby Shaftoe in the production "Babes in Toyland", with his family watching.

“At a very young age - maybe when I was seven-years-old - I was always doing performances in my living room,” he said. “My parents wanted me to play hockey, which I did and hated it. After I appeared in the production of Babes in Toyland. I knew, without a doubt, that this would become my passion.”

At the age of 18 he began visiting Toronto's gay village. Which is when he officially came out of the closetdespite knowing that he was gay since he was probably ten-years-old.

FIRST DRAG PERFORMANCE

Miss Conception started her career at a bar in Toronto called Zipperz, on May 15, 2000, and she never looked back. She won her first contest called Zelda’s Drag Idol (2003) and then became the host for eight years.

In that first performance Miss Conception performed Robyn’s “Show Me Love“ and Celine Dion’s “Declaration of Love.”

Over the years Kevin has accumulated numerous titles including Miss Canada Continental, Smirnoff Twisted, Coors Lite Queen of Halloween, Ontario's Next Top Drag Queen, Zelda’s Drag Idol, Miss Gay Universe, Miss Gay Toronto, Ticot’s Entertainer of the Year and Weerk.com Award - Queen of the Great White North.

Miss Conception has appeared in "Queer as Folk," "Degrassi: The Next Generation," and was the first ever contestant in drag on "Wipeout Canada." During her career she opened up shows for the late Leslie Jordan as well as singer Lorna Luft (daughter of Judy Garland) and Jennifer Holliday, a Tony Award winner for “Dream Girls”.

PUERTO VALLARTA’S CALLING

It was by serendipity that Miss Conception’s show ended up in Puerto Vallarta - Kevin had come to Mexico because his friend Cameron asked him to come to attend BeefDip. One evening out they ended up at The Palm Cabaret where Kim Kuzma was performing. She was talking to the audience and asked Kevin where he was from and what he did for a living.

“I told her I was a drag queen from Toronto,” he said laughing. “The next thing I know she has me on stage and I’m singing ‘Sweet Caroline’. As we were leaving Mark Rome (who was one of the founders of The Palm) was at the door and he told me I had a pretty good voice. I gave him a DVD of my performances and told him I’d love to work there sometime.”

And as they say, the rest is history. Mark followed up and hired Miss Conception for the very next season.

“I was working at a radio station, Proud FM, as a radio talk show host and working as a waiter at Zelda’s Restaurant,” he explained. “I gave my notice and told ‘em I was headed to Mexico to work during the winter season.”

Miss Conception has been in Puerto Vallarta now for 14 seasons, with most of that time spent performing at The Palm CAbaret. Her shows are a mix of her perception of characters from movies, Broadway and TV shows. She transitions from one character to another, singing as she goes. She has a natural wit and charm about her that connects her immediately to the audience. Her goal is to have them forget the outside world for the hour and 15 minutes and leave them laughing, to forget the crazy world we live in.

“Probably my most favorite show was Villains in the 2022-2023 season,” she said. “It was so much fun.”

The show included her transforming before the audience into villains like Cruella de Vil, Annie Wilkes from Misery, Michael Keaton’s undead Beetlejuice, and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters.

25 YEARS, ONE SHOW

Miss Conception’s 25th Silver Anniversary Spectacular at the Palm includes an amazing number of costume

changes - all done in front of the audienceand all live singing. She brings back her favorite character, or as she says the “best of the best” from every show she has ever done over her career.

Throughout the night, each look more dazzling than the last, this show promises to be a feast for the eyes and a journey through the best of drag artistry. Expect a night filled with laughter, music, and awe-inspiring performances as we honor a quartercentury of fabulousness.

You can see Miss Conception perform her amazing costume changes at The Palm Cabaret every Monday (9 p.m.) and Thursday (7 p.m.), through April 4, 2025 (with added shows in February, be sure to check the schedule).

MISS CONCEPTION'S FIRST TIME IN DRAG

MIKEL ALVAREZ’S

MIKEL ALVAREZ HAS ALWAYS POSSESSED A DEEP-ROOTED DESIRE TO HELP PEOPLE, WHICH HAS BEEN A GUIDING FORCE THROUGHOUT HIS JOURNEY. HIS EXPERIENCES IN THE MEDICINAL CANNABIS INDUSTRY SHOWCASED THE POWERFUL EFFECT OF COMPASSIONATE CARE. THIS PASSION FOR HEALING HAS ONLY GROWN STRONGER SINCE, AND HIS VISION FOR THRIVE MEDSPA AND THE SERVICES IT OFFERS STEMS FROM HIS COMMITMENT TO CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE INDIVIDUALS CAN FIND RELIEF AND REJUVENATION.

Having moved from Las Vegas, NV, Mikel's journey to opening ThrIVe MedSpa is closely tied to his long-standing connection to Puerto Vallarta, a place he has visited for nearly thirty years. Originally drawn by his mother's frequent visits, Mikel soon discovered the allure of this beautiful destination for himself.

"When I was 16, I fell in love with Puerto Vallarta. There was something about it that just pulled me in," he recalled.

He began to visit more often and for longer periods, ultimately realizing that this vibrant city was his true "happy place."

Years later, while researching his family history, Mikel uncovered a fascinating lineage history. His grandfather’s mother was a native Indian and his grandfather's father was a Mexican living in Indio, California.

Today, his family owns a Native American casino in Palm Springs. His tribe was the first to have Indian gaming legalized in the United States, he said.

This connection to Mexico added another layer to his bond with Puerto Vallarta; it allowed Mikel to secure dual citizenship in the United States and Mexico. He believes this familial link is part of the larger tapestry of his attraction to Puerto Vallarta, where he feels a strong energy.

“I feel such energy here, especially knowing about the Male vortexes that collide around Playa Los Muertos,” he said.

Mikel reflected on the concept of Ley Lines—energetic grids crisscrossing the earth that attract and connect people—and we both agreed that the energy of Puerto

Vallarta plays a noticeable role in drawing individuals to its shores.

"Whenever I leave, I can feel the absence of that calmness. Yet when I return, it's like I get this surge of energy, almost like I'm being recharged,” he shared. “When I'm not here, I notice something is missing."

For Mikel, Puerto Vallarta is more than just a destination; it's home.

In 1997, Mikel started working in IT, dealing with ISPs (internet service providers). He had offices in Cincinnati, OH, and Bellevue, WA. But he knew he needed to return to school and have a degree. It was when the dot.com bubble was about to burst.

After his early years in Seattle, Mikel moved to Reno, NV, to attend college. He studied at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he earned a double bachelor in Casino Management and Economics. His academic journey then coincided with the emerging legal cannabis market in Nevada. Recognizing its potential, Mikel partnered with a company to secure distribution licenses, cultivation, processing, and dispensary operations. He ultimately opened his first medicinal marijuana dispensary in Reno, followed by three additional

locations in Las Vegas plus others in California.

However, as the cannabis market shifted towards recreational use, Mikel found himself at a crossroads. Though he advocated for medicinal cannabis—helping patients manage pain, anxiety, and other health issues—he struggled with the notion of selling cannabis solely for recreational purposes. By the time he completed his degree in 2009, he realized that a change was necessary.

Despite leaving the cannabis industry, Mikel continued to be drawn back to Puerto Vallarta.

After some freelance work aimed at vertically integrating cannabis products into legal sales in Northern California, he returned to Las Vegas, where a suggestion from his doctor led him to learn about ketamine therapy for mental health. Initially developed in the 1960s for anesthesia, ketamine has evolved into an FDA-approved treatment for conditions like anxiety, depression, and stress, according to Alvarez.

Having experience in the cannabis industry for pain management and helping people, Mikel saw it as an opportunity to continue to help people with Ketamine therapy. He decided to build a business out of it. For Mikel, it was a way to continue

his mission of aiding others, leading him to the decision to establish ThrIVe MedSpa. With his extensive experience and dedication to compassionate care, he aimed to provide a sanctuary for individuals seeking to improve their mental health and overall well-being.

The concept emerged during one of his vacations in Puerto Vallarta between 2020 and 2021 when Mikel

experienced severe heatstroke and sought an IV treatment. Not wanting to go to a hospital for help due to the ongoing pandemic, he had the idea to open an IV clinic. While exiting the shop of his close friend Casandra Shaw, he noticed a storefront space available across the street on Basillo Badio. The rest, as they say, is history.

An IV treatment, which includes Ringer’s Lactate and other essential nutrients, is known for its ability to hydrate the body through the bloodstream, especially after intoxication and dehydration. Mikel chooses the best products on the market instead of using saline or sterile water for patient hydration. Unlike similar businesses, ThrIVe MedSpa offers a one-liter bag of vitamins, minerals and medicine tailored to individual needs. What sets this business apart is its commitment to transparency: the hydration menu details the contents and quantities of each IV treatment.

“You have the right to know what’s going into your body,” Mikel emphasized.

Most IV products can be customized based on the patient’s needs or allergy restrictions, he went on. Mikel wants everyone to enjoy their vacation in Puerto Vallarta without being hindered by hangovers. By providing a proper multivitamin package with additional doses of vitamins B, C, and Zinc, administered

by a team of skilled ER nurses, tourists and locals alike can revitalize their bodies and continue enjoying their day.

The business initially focused on IV treatments, but then a team member named Levi got recertified for aesthetics in Mexico, including Botox and fillers. He joined Mikel, and together they expanded the business to include aesthetic services. Over the years, they have added many more services and remodeled the clinic to offer massages, facials, and waxing, with plans to incorporate hair implants and eye lift surgeries soon.

“It’s a one-stop shop for the best products and services available,” Mikel stated.

ThrIVe MedSpa features a more active vibe than the typical zen atmosphere found in most spas.

As ThrIVe MedSpa celebrates its third anniversary, the majority of its positive reviews come from word of mouth. However, Mikel is hopeful to spread the word about the healing and rejuvenating services the business provides.

ITS TAGLINE IS, “LOOKING GOOD AND FEELING GREAT.”

PVRPV Celebrates 20 years

THROUGH A JOURNEY OF GROWTH AND COMMUNITY COMMITMENT

As Puerto Vallarta’s vacation rental agency, PVRPV celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, beginning on March 1, 2005 with a modest staff of three and a small office.

Tim Longpré, originally from Toronto, started the business representing 50 vacation properties from a small office at 152 Francisco Rodriguez. Over the years, under his leadership, the agency has undergone

remarkable growth, now boasting over 100 dedicated employees, three offices, and three laundries, making it a cornerstone of the local vacation rental landscape.

In 2008, the agency expanded its operations by relocating to a larger space at 210 Pino Suarez. This move marked a significant milestone as PVRPV's inventory of vacation rentals grew to over 500 properties, covering prime areas such as Amapas, Conchas Chinas, Downtown, Los Muertos Beach, Marina Vallarta, and Old Town.

MARC SERRAO Broker/Owner

By 2016, the company further embraced innovation and efficiency by relocating to a state-of-the-art industrial office in “The Park,” at Lazaro Cárdenas #205, solidifying its position as the largest vacation rental agency in Puerto Vallarta.

A pivotal moment in PVRPV's history came in 2012 when Agustin Rocha, now co-owner and husband of Tim Longpré, joined the company. Agustin brought extensive expertise in the Mexican sales industry, which proved invaluable in navigating the complexities of the local market. His background and insights have greatly contributed to PVRPV's growth and success, allowing the agency to refine its services and enhance its offerings for clients.

PVRPV’s evolution didn’t stop at vacation rentals; in June 2019, the agency expanded into real estate with the launch of PVRPV Real Estate, allowing clients to find investment properties that generate rental income. This strategic move, combined with the company’s strong online presence, has made PVRPV one of the top vacation

property websites in Mexico. Agustin's experience in sales has been instrumental in promoting this new venture, ensuring that PVRPV continues to meet the diverse needs of its clientele.

In 2022, driven by company growth and an expanding team, PVRPV relocated all administrative team members to a dedicated office space. This strategic move has provided a more efficient work environment, allowing the team to better serve clients and manage the increasing volume of business.

In 2023, PVRPV expanded once again by opening an office in the Marina Vallarta area, which services the hotel zone, Versailles, Marina, and beyond. This expansion highlights PVRPV's commitment to providing comprehensive services to its clients and property owners in all regions of the Bay of Banderas. Additionally, to further support property owners, the agency opened an office in Bucerias, Nayarit, to service the northern end of the bay, demonstrating a proactive approach to meet the demands of the growing market.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

The agency’s commitment extends beyond business; PVRPV has a longstanding dedication to community service. Tim, Agustin, and their team have actively supported numerous local causes, including Charity Bingo events, food drives during crises like the swine flu outbreak, and cultural celebrations such as the Mardi Gras Parade.

Their volunteerism has positively impacted many lives, particularly those of women and children living in poverty around the Puerto Vallarta landfill, where PVRPV has helped provide educational resources and support.

The agency's success has not only been defined by its growth but also by the relationships it has built within the community. PVRPV's team is deeply involved in various charitable initiatives, such as supporting local orphanages, organizing food drives, and contributing to educational programs for underprivileged children. This commitment to social responsibility

has strengthened PVRPV's ties to Puerto Vallarta and has made a significant difference in the lives of many residents.

In 2024, PVRPV was honored to receive the “Código de Conducta Nacional para la Protección de las Niñas, Niños y Adolescentes en el sector de los Viajes y el Turismo.” This award is given to businesses in the tourism sector that support the National Code of Conduct for the Protection of Girls, Boys, and Adolescents. Awarded by the Secretaría de Turismo (the Secretary of Tourism of Mexico), PVRPV takes great pride in knowing that its efforts to support the safety, well-being, and care of children are recognized at a national level.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

PVRPV's impressive customer service is a testament to its success in a competitive market. The agency has maintained an exceptional 4.6 out of 5 rating over the years, thanks to an innovative automated booking system and a passionate team that goes above and beyond

to ensure guest satisfaction. Tim and Agustin’s philosophy of prioritizing community and client relationships has not only fostered loyalty but has also attracted a diverse clientele, including celebrities and international guests.

As PVRPV celebrates 20 years, Tim Longpré reflects on the journey.

“Who could have imagined that what started as a vacation to this beautiful city would turn into 20 years of PVRPV,” Tim said. “ From humble beginnings with one working computer and three staff members, we have grown to represent a vast inventory of properties and have created a thriving community around us. I want to express my deepest gratitude to our guests and property owners for their support and loyalty throughout these years.”

With a strong foundation built on dedication, innovation, and community spirit, PVRPV looks forward to many more successful

years ahead, continuing to provide exceptional vacation experiences while giving back to the wonderful community of Puerto Vallarta.

Tim and Agustin are excited about the future, eager to explore new opportunities and enhance their services even further. Congratulations, PVRPV, on this significant milestone! Here's to many more years of success, growth, and community impact.

Miss Conception Turns 25... Again

A SIT-DOWN Q&A WITH A WORLDWIDE CELEBRATED DRAG QUEEN

Miss Conception is celebrating her 25th year as a drag performer, with 15 of those years spent in Puerto Vallarta as a head-liner entertainer. We talked with her and asked these 15 must-know questions & answers..

1. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START PERFORMING IN DRAG 25 YEARS AGO?

It was actually two drag queens’ names J.J. Murray and Felicia (from the iconic drag trio “The Freaks”). My friends Jack and Ben and I used to go to Zipperz (a once predominant, iconic gay bar in the heart of Toronto’s gay district) on Monday night for industry night and watch the show. My friends said “You should do drag “ and I was like “you think “

The girls (the drag queens performing that night) let me on their stage two weeks later and Miss Conception was born.

2. CAN YOU SHARE YOUR MOST MEMORABLE PERFORMANCE FROM THE PAST 25 YEARS?

There are so many memorable moments but one that stands out is performing for the 150th birthday of Canada at Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto. Followed by a personalized letter from the Governor General writing to say how proud she was.

3. HOW HAS THE DRAG SCENE CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED?

It’s changed so very much. When I started drag it was about

impersonating a celebrity more than just wearing a body suit. So many of us tried to look like or spoof celebrities in the art of impersonation. Sadly, that art form is slowly fading away.

4. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT PERFORMING IN DRAG?

Like my friend Michael Holmes (otherwise known as the “Judy Garland” of Palm Springs) says: “It’s like you leave your own body and take over a new person.”

I agree with him. My favorite part of performing in drag is becoming a character, letting loose, making people laugh and forgetting the world.

5. HOW DO YOU CHOOSE YOUR COSTUMES AND MAKEUP FOR EACH PERFORMANCE?

Well my make-up stays the same for my impersonations/Spoof characters that I perform. In my shows I do a lot of Broadway, movie and tv show characters so it’s easy to choose my costumes based on the character I am trying to portray.

6. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING DRAG PERFORMERS?

Don’t get in your head, don’t be bitter, stay out of drama and never take yourself too seriously.

by:

Photo
David Hawe

7. WHAT ROLE DOES SOCIAL MEDIA PLAY IN YOUR CAREER TODAY COMPARED TO WHEN YOU STARTED?

Social media plays a huge part as people around the world can go online, or go to social media to see your show information or show posters. Years ago or before social media we used to put posters up in Toronto's Gay Village or wherever I was performing. We’d hope and pray people would come.

8. HOW HAVE YOUR PERFORMANCES EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS?

I started my career by only lip syncing in my performances and shows. Over the years I learned how to carry a note, sing LIVE and perform all my songs with live vocals. Makeup went from “hardly any” to “tons of make-up”. Costumes went from the goodwill finds to “custom made” by incredible seamsters like Jose Luis, Jeff Christensen and Richard Ryder. Gidget Galore , Demanda Tension, and Lauren, I’d say it’s changed a lot

9. HOW DO YOU CONNECT WITH YOUR AUDIENCE DURING A PERFORMANCE?

The best way to connect with your audiences is to look them in the eye when you’re performing and listen to them. Just because you love a song doesn’t mean the audience will. Listen to them and make them happy.

10. WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU HOPE TO CONVEY THROUGH YOUR ART?

We only get one life, so let’s laugh like school girls and love everyone for who they are.

11. CAN YOU SHARE A FUNNY OR EMBARRASSING MOMENT FROM YOUR PERFORMANCES?

Oh my… Well, the most embarrassing moment was when I was performing at a fundraiser in Houston Texas for the Montrose Center that was presented by Concierge travel. I got food poisoning the day before the show. I have never been so sick! IT is not pretty five minutes before curtain call and you have a drag queen being sick out of both ends. All while I was in full make up and naked in a bathroom.

However, being the person and performer, I am, “the show must go on”. I said to myself, “the audience is here, suck it up and go rock that stage.” Thank lord it was only a 20 min set. I always said a special thank you to everyone who took care of me but that’s one for the books.

12. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SONG OR ROUTINE TO PERFORM AND WHY?

Lip syncing has to be “I Just Wanna Dance “ by Alison Jeare because it was the song I closed every show, every performance at Woody's Bar in Toronto for 15 years. It was that type of song that had everyone dancing and forgetting the world.

Performing and Singing Live, probably has to be “I Am What I am “where I take my make up off onstage to reveal Kevin, the man behind Miss Conception. I like people to see that I am a human just like them. To show that I am proud of who I’ve become because it’s not a world we have to hide in.

13. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT IN YOUR 25 YEARS OF PERFORMING?

I believe my proudest achievement in my career was to be able to have my mother, Trisha and my Father, Bob by my side for most of my career. My Mom was my best friend. She was so proud to see me on stage making people smile.

My Dad is everything you ever want in a father. Always there for his kids, helping out with their projects. Dad built many of my props over the years. Props like the Kathy Bates bed from the movie “Misery” and so many more. I’m very lucky that I grew up in a safe and loving home.

14. HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR PERSONAL LIFE WITH YOUR CAREER IN DRAG?

They’re honestly kind-of all one. My drag career is 300 days a year of travel, with performances and venues around the world. You’re only hot, when you’re hot, so take advantage of the work. The key is to balance your life, your love life and hopefully retire early.

15. ARE THERE ANY NEW PROJECTS OR PERFORMANCES YOU’RE EXCITED ABOUT?

I’m always writing a new show every year. I'm already working on next year’s / season's show which will be called “Miss Conceptions Monster Mashup”. Taking the most iconic spooky movies and bringing them to life. Such as Joan Crawford, Jaws, SCREAM, The Addams Family, Jurassic Park, The Shining and so many more.

Not to forget to mention this season's show called “Miss Conception: 25th Silver Anniversary Spectacular”. It is a must-see show where I feature 25 years of songs, music and 25 costume changes LIVE on stage. You will love it!

Before I go, please allow me to thank so many people:

To all the people who supported me by coming to my shows over the years, giving gracious gratuities, buying a ticket or taking that cruise to see me perform, thank you. Thank you for the love over the last 25 years and to many more to come. To my husband Kieran, I love you more than life itself. Thank you.

Sweet Journeys:

THE LOVE STORY BEHIND DULCERIA

LA HOLANDESA

At Dulceria La Holandesa candy and gift store, the owners, Rinette Laros and her wife — Emerita Carrillo Rubio — have poured love and care into their business. It is apparent in each item on display. Here, the colors are bright, and the atmosphere is joyful.

From festive greeting cards to unique Christmas ornaments, it is a perfect spot for both locals and tourists alike.

Dulceria La Holandesa reminded me of the locals’ favorite gift shop in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago — Foursided — when I visited to meet the owners.

Tucked beneath the iconic Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe church in Puerto Vallarta’s historic Centro neighborhood, this store is a treasure trove of candies and gifts, offering a colorful array of products.

But the vibrant atmosphere of the shop is also a reflection of a story. A story of resilience, perseverance, and determination. It is a tale of a once young Rinette and her decades-long journey from the Netherlands to Mexico.

As you step inside, you are greeted by vibrant displays filled with a mix of traditional Mexican sweets, handcrafted chocolates, and charming gift boxes.

It all started in 1965 in Kaatsheuvel, Netherlands, where Rinette was born and raised by a traditionally conservative family.

“From a young age, I could sense how my feelings toward other women had set me apart from those around me,” Rinette recalled, sitting across from me in the back of the store.

Yet she felt compelled to adhere to the traditional paths laid out by her parents, mainly due to not having a support system in place. In 1988, at just 19 years old, Rinette married her then-husband, Wim, and their union lasted for 24 years. While she cherished her marriage, Rinette struggled with her identity and feelings for women.

“I sought companionship discreetly when possible.”

Over the years, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, had become a recurring sanctuary for Rinette and Wim where they’d enjoyed vacations, an escape from the constraints of their life in the Netherlands. There, Rinette had also met the reserved Emerita, but things couldn’t progress between them since their paths could only run parallel, and not cross.

During one of those trips, Rinette faced an unexpected health scare that landed her in the hospital. With

her return flight missed, she found shelter with Emerita, who, alongside her mother, welcomed Rinette with open arms. This serendipitous moment sparked a connection that would change Rinette's life forever.

“I was grateful for Emerita’s kindness,” Rinette said, “so I invited her to visit the Netherlands.”

It was during that trip that the two fell in love. Torn between her marriage and newfound love, Rinette was faced with a heart-wrenching decision. When she confided in Wim about her feelings for Emerita, Wim’s response was both devastating and revealing:

‘“This time I’m going to lose you.”’ Rinette recalled what he had said.

Tragedy struck shortly after. Wim was diagnosed with terminal esophagus cancer. He succumbed to the illness just six weeks later. But before taking his last breath, Wim played an unexpected role as Rinette’s guardian angel, ensuring her parents would accept Emerita after he was gone.

“It was like the universe was paving the path for Emerita and me to be together,” Rinette told me.

Rinette described Wim as a comforting presence in her life. During her moments of sadness, she would often hear the melody of what used to be their song, "Have You Ever Seen The Rain," by Credence Clearwater filling the air. The echoing melody has been a reminder to her that even in darker times, there was always hope and support waiting for her.

After Wim’s death, Rinette followed her heart to Puerto Vallarta, where she and Emerita founded Dulceria La Holandesa in October 2013. The store, adorned with colorful candies and gifts, quickly became a labor of love and a testament to their enduring partnership in life and business. In 2022, Rinette and Emerita celebrated their marriage. They solidified their bond and the community they had built around their shop.

Rinette often reflects on the contrasting lifestyles of the Netherlands and Mexico. Here in Puerto Vallarta, the pace of life is slower, more vibrant, she said.

“Back in the Netherlands, there was always a rush to get somewhere,” she

chuckled. “In Mexico, people actually live.”

Today, she encourages others to embrace the local culture and support small businesses. With Dulceria La Holandesa, she serves not only as a business owner but also as a pride for the local LGBTQI+ community, advocating for local shopping and fostering a sense of belonging.

“Support small businesses and shop local” is Rinette's message for the LGBTQI+ community.

Every color, every smile, and every sweet treat at Dulceria La Holandesa tells a story of resilience, love, and the power of following one’s heart. And Rinette Laros stands as a testament to the beauty of living authentically and the joy of embracing who you truly are.

Born in Venezuela, Luis's passion for performance ignited when he was 19-years-old. His journey to Puerto Vallarta came in stages, the last of which he decided he would become a resident. He spent time here as a dancer, where he swiftly ascended the ranks, becoming a sought-after choreographer, event producer, and costume designer.

He isn’t one to bask in the spotlight. And you may not quickly recognize his name. But if you’ve seen the Lady Gaga show or Freddy Mercury show at The Palm, you have seen some of his costume design work.

This past year Luis has taken on the challenging role of theater producer. His latest venture, at Coco Cabaret, has become a theatrical innovation. Two of his productions, "The Beatles – Twist and Shout" and "Diamonds – A Marilyn Celebration," have captivated audiences with their stunning visuals, performances, and innovative storytelling.

"The Beatles – Twist and Shout" is a nostalgic journey through the Fab Four's iconic music. With a talented band and energetic dancers, the show

recreates the magic of the Beatles' live performances. Luis's meticulous attention to detail ensures that every aspect of the production, from the costumes to the lighting, is executed with precision.

"Diamonds – A Marilyn Celebration" is a tribute to the legendary Marilyn Monroe. Luis's deep admiration for the iconic actress inspired him to create a show that celebrates her beauty, talent, and enduring legacy. With a talented cast and a stunning set design, the show takes audiences on a journey through Marilyn's life, highlighting both her triumphs and her struggles.

Luis is an avid fan of Marilyn’s and based some of the show on the NBC series “SMASH”. In the show, a songwriting duo tries to create a hit with a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe.

“Marilyn is so special,” he said. “She had such a difficult life and was often misunderstood. The show I’m producing focuses on the special moments she had in her life and not so much on her suffering. She is iconic and still so present in our culture.”

It took him three months to prepare the Marilyn story and ready it for the stage. He rehearsed with the cast for three to four hours a day, almost everyday during those three months.

The lead who plays Marilyn Monroe, Paris Aguilar, was sought after by Luis.

“I saw her perform many years ago in Venezuela," he said. “I knew she would be perfect for the role so I pursued her. It took awhile but we finally landed her for the role and she’s fantastic.”

Beyond his work as a producer, Luis is also a gifted costume designer. His innovative designs have transformed countless productions, elevating them to new heights. With a keen eye for detail and a flair for the dramatic, he creates costumes that are both beautiful and functional.

“I have a lung condition and I needed to isolate myself during the pandemic,” he said. “I needed work and so I learned how to sew with the help of my friend (and now his assistant) Alejandro Rodriguez. He is an amazing seamstress, and he’s very meticulous.”

He and his team at Meraky IR Producciones have created costumes for many of the shows that you see in Puerto Vallarta, including Swan Lake, the Nutcracker, Boys on Fire, Temptations, Beyonce, and more.

He said his learning curve was steep - a new theater with a new cast in the Marilyn Monroe show, had its challenges, but he gives credit to three people who have helped him - Sebastian Coronel, Chris Lopez and Mark Rome.

“They have each taken so much time to explain how things work in theater,” he explained. “Chris created all of the visuals you see in my shows. Mark is an expert and has provided so much guidance on every level. And it was Sebastian’s idea that I expand my creative skills and give theater a try.”

He said he was so happy he stepped out of his comfort zone and loves his new home at Coco Cabaret. outandaboutpv.com

HEDDA LETTUCE: STILL FUNNY AND FRESH

CATCHING UP WITH THE DRAG ICON

So just how long does a head of lettuce stay fresh? A quick internet search suggests a couple of weeks, if you’re lucky. For Hedda Lettuce, it’s been a lucky last three decades. In an era overpopulated with drag queens, Steve Polito refuses to wilt away. I recently caught up with the world’s most famous green haired drag queen to chat about her latest show and her love affair with Puerto Vallarta.

This interview has been lightly edited for clarity and length.

JOSEPH FENITY: YOU’RE CELEBRATING A DECADE OF PERFORMING IN PUERTO VALLARTA. WHAT BROUGHT YOU HERE AND WHY PV?

HEDDA LETTUCE: About 10 years ago I was working on an Atlantis cruise ship and we had an overnight stay in Puerto Vallarta. Since we had a full night, they stuck us all in little minivans—all the queers squeezed in these little vans—and they drove us to the Romantic Zone. That's when I went to Paco's Ranch and saw this beautiful boy—and he saw me. My friend said, “Don't go home with anybody, especially in a foreign country.” But gay people don't listen. We make up our own rules. So, I gladly left with him. Now he didn't speak English and I didn't speak any Spanish. We walked to his neighborhood in Emiliano Zapata and I saw these chickens and roosters and I'm like, “Where are we? What is going on? Is this finally it for me?” So, we get to his building and we walk up one flight of stairs and then another flight and another. Finally, we get to the roof and now I’m really thinking, “Oh my God, this is it—this is the end.” But up on the roof was a cabana and we made love for two hours on that rooftop. Then there was a full moon afterwards. We walked down those seven flights of stairs and went to a nearby taco stand. I ate a taco and somehow I didn't get sick. Then on my walk back through town, I see posters and banners of most of my contemporaries at the time. I’m thinking, “Wow, why is she here? She's performing here?” I thought, “Oh, this could be interesting.”

JF: HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR COMEDY AND MATERIAL FRESH ALL OF THESE YEARS?

HL: Well, I’m a singer and comedian,

but I'm also known for my audience work. I love working off a live audience and being in the moment. So, while my show has many points I have to hit, there's also a lot of time to play, where it can go anywhere. So no show is the same, it goes in any direction.

JF: TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT SHOW, ROMAINE CALM!

HL: Well I didn't realize that [the title] would be a sort of prophecy, you know? Naming it “Romaine Calm!” But now, with what's happening globally in terms of the recent U.S. presidential election, it's perfect timing. I didn’t think [the election] was going to go the way that it did. So the show’s title has become really poignant—now it really means something. I'm actually doing a lot of jokes around what's going on with all of that right now.

JF: YOU’RE STILL LOOKING GREAT AFTER ALL THESE YEARS. HOW ARE YOU KEEPING YOURSELF FRESH AND CRISP?

HL: Right? It's not too bad. It's all still holding together. Over the last several years, I've been more health conscious. I saw a lot of my contemporaries burn out because of X, Y, or Z and so I was like, “Oh, I better just pull back on X, Y, or Z.” I also think living in a tropical climate and in a different culture definitely keeps you fresh. It certainly changes your perspective on life and it adds energy to your material. I've become a much better performer working here in PV.

JF: WHAT IS THE FEELING YOU GET WHEN STEVEN PUTS ON THE HEDDA DRAG? TELL ME ABOUT THE FINAL WIG ADJUSTMENT AND THAT LAST TOUCH OF LIPSTICK. DO YOU BECOME A DIFFERENT PERSON?

HL: Well, it’s sort of like—it can be like a possession of sorts. So there's a lot I’ve had to temper over the years. It’s a balancing act. There's you and then you kind of cross over and you feel you can get into it a lot. It's a challenge. I consider myself more of an actor per se. Not that I don't love the “drag queen” title, it’s great. It has “queen” in it, so it's wonderful! It's got royal edges to it. But I consider

myself more of an actor because in my everyday life I don't carry that with me. I don't really need to stand out as much [when out of drag], I don't need to be the center of attention. I get that on stage and that gets it out of my system. I don't need to be the focus in my everyday life, only on Thursdays at eight o'clock!

JF: HAVE YOU HAD ANY MEMORABLE ON-STAGE MISHAPS?

HL: Getting nearly electrocuted. I was on stage at Barracuda in New York City with another queen and something was happening with the microphone while we were doing a Celine Dion song. There was a short in the mic and we were both thrown to the back of the stage and slid down the wall. Oddly enough—and I don't know how this happened—but her wig hair was standing up. I don't know how but the hair on her wig stood up. The audience howled—no one had a clue!

Another time I had the most luxurious Rita Hayworth-ish heavy red hair and I'm feeling gorgeous. Then I spin around and the wig has so much weight at the bottom that when I spun around it flew off and landed on someone's lap. Luckily I had a Liza wig in my purse.

That's how you learn improvisation skills and that's how I learned to be a really great improvisational performer. Working off the audience and stuff like that.

JF: WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? DO YOU EVER THINK ABOUT YOUR LETTUCE LEGACY?

HL: Well, I'm not done. I'm at this point where I'm old, but not old. I'm like middle aged, you know? So I still have time in front of me. Who knows what's gonna happen?!

EDITOR’S NOTE: Hedda Lettuce begins having a conversation with herself while impersonating the voice of an imaginary fan reflecting on her legacy.

“Hedda Lettuce? Oh yeah!” “Wait, is she dead?” “No, she's still alive.”

“She lives in Mexico—I saw her at the fruit market!” “Oh yeah—she's performing down there.”

HL: You know what? I love Puerto Vallarta. In fact, this city is one of the top LGBTQ destinations in the world. So being here is not like you’ve disappeared.

JF: YOU’RE NOT OFF IN SOME SMALL VILLAGE IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE

HL: Right! We have international crowds who pay money to see a live show. It’s not like I just rode into town on a donkey with a couple of chickens and my backup dancers. Being in PV is great. But I do really wish I could train those chickens.

Hedda Lettuce can be seen weekly in her show, “Romaine Calm" at The Palm Cabaret and at Bawdy Bingo at La Catrina Cantina. For more information or to get tickets to see her live, visit heddalettuce.com

Angie Nuñez Changes Tires and Minds

IN MALE DOMINATED ENVIRONMENT

Maria de los Angeles Nuñez Barraza, also known as Angie, reflects the heart of Puerto Vallarta, as she goes about her daily life as a tire mechanic and branch manager at Radial Llantas. She’s part of Puerto Vallarta’s LGBTQ+ community, where the true essence is often hidden beneath the surface.

Her journey, marked by love, resilience, and unwavering commitment to her work and community, embodies the spirit of unsung heroes who enrich the tapestry of life around us.

These humans of Puerto Vallarta— these pillars of the LGBTQI+ community—go about their lives, unnoticed, yet they play a vital role in the fabric of society. They face each day with a smile, providing for their families and contributing to their community. They deserve our attention. Angie is one such person who deserves recognition for her role in making Puerto Vallarta a wonderful place to live. This is her story.

I met Maria, also known as Angie, during the summer of 2024 at Radial Llantas while shopping for tires for my vehicle and was immediately drawn to her. Angie grew up in Las Palmas de Arriba, a town about an hour away from Puerto Vallarta.

Minutes into talking to her, it became clear that Angie lived her life authentically and embraced her identity. I could tell that she actively seeks spaces where love and acceptance flourish.

We—gays—must have an odor permeating the space around us or a cloud hovering above our heads, noticeable only to other queers. Because amid my horrible attempts at speaking Spanish, I sensed her gaze registering a sign of recognition, acknowledging me. Through that invisible bond, through that sense of shared experience and connection, Angie smilingly mentioned living with her wife.

And I was in gay heaven! As a recent car owner nervously shopping for automotive parts, I felt reassured by Angie’s expertise. Doesn’t the saying go something like ‘You want to get a

job done right, entrust a lesbian’?

It rang true in this instance, as she confidently suggested the best set of tires for my Suzuki Jimny and even scheduled an appointment for me the following day. And just like that, she put my mind at ease. I slept soundly that night, knowing I was in good hands.

Communicating with her, it became evident that Angie finds a strong sense of belonging within the LGBTQI+ community, surrounded by others who understand her unique experiences and challenges.

Angie met her wife—Elia Cristina Zepeda Valadez—six years ago. It was a chance encounter. Elia reached out to her about a job opening at Radial Llantas. Some time passed, and Elia reconnected with Angie after her previous relationship had ended. They met one evening, chatted, and, before they knew it, they were surrounded by the early morning crimson light smeared across the sky. Angie knew

then, amid the streaks of pink quickly spreading across the horizon, that she was falling in love with Elia.

“I made her my wife in June of this year,” Angie shared with me. “We are very happy.”

Now, their weekends are filled with laughter as they go shore fishing and savor the local cuisine. One of their favorite spots is the Muxe Bar, which—while not explicitly an LGBTQI+ destination—offers them a welcoming atmosphere as a female couple.

“We love to go out dancing, have a good cocktail, but above all escape on weekends to be in touch with nature. We equally love days staying home with our dog babies and enjoy family movie marathons,” Angie said.

Angie has been with Radial Llantas for six years where hours can be long in a demanding environment as the branch manager.

She wears multiple hats performing various activities: from customer service to sales offerings to the application of tires even. Angie takes pride in being part of the company and values her teamwork.

“Nothing worth having comes easy, but I have a motto: if one person succeeds in their role, we all succeed together,” she told me during our exchange.

Her hands are her tools, she said, for providing excellent service to each client.

Angie acknowledges that working in an industry traditionally dominated by men has its challenges. But she faces those challenges head-on. According to her, her determination to succeed makes each day an exciting opportunity. Committed to championing equal rights and visibility for her community, she stands proudly in her role.

“Being a woman in this mechanical workspace speaks volumes about societal progress,” Angie noted. “The fact that roles once reserved for men are now held by women like me highlights the importance of labor diversity.”

Angie's story serves as a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience found within Puerto Vallarta's LGBTQI+ community. In every automotive product she sells and every smile she shares, Angie leaves a mark, reminding us all to honor the everyday heroes who contribute so much to the world around us. outandaboutpv.com

KENYA CUEVAS’ REVENGE:

SPREADING LOVE IN

BY OSCAR ALMEIDA

KENYA CUEVAS, VALLARTA

PRIDE’S 2024 AMBASSADOR, HAS EMERGED AS A PROMINENT ADVOCATE FOR LGBTQ+ RIGHTS IN MEXICO OVER THE PAST EIGHT YEARS. SHE ESTABLISHED ’CASA DE LAS MUÑECAS TIRESIAS’ IN MEXICO, THREE SHELTERS DEDICATED TO SUPPORTING TRANS WOMEN AND THOSE IN VULNERABLE SITUATIONS AND SHE LOBBIED AND HELPED GET THE MEXICO CITY LAW PROTECTING TRANS WOMEN, THE PAOLA BUENROSTRO LAW, PASSED. HER EFFORTS FINALLY GAINED NATIONAL RECOGNITION WHEN FORBES MAGAZINE NAMED HER ONE OF MEXICO'S 100 MOST INFLUENTIAL WOMEN.

Kenya's life story resonates deeply with those who meet her. Through her eponymous documentary and her active participation in conferences and talks, she has demonstrated that sharing her experiences can lead to significant social change.

This year marked a pivotal moment for her during the 11th season of Vallarta Pride. Kenya led the parade on a funeral float, a poignant tribute referring to her beginning in activism - reflecting back to when she marched with Paola Buenrostro's coffin in 2016, calling for justice in Mexico City. This symbolic act reflected both the pain and the harsh realities faced by Mexico’s LGBTQ+ community, which continues to grapple with violence, discrimination, and systemic impunity.

ACTIVISM IN PUERTO VALLARTA

Kenya's work in Puerto Vallarta underscores her importance in the fight for rights and being vallarta Pride’s ambassador underscores a powerful commitment to addressing local needs and driving social change. Her activism began with the Rainbow Race, where she raised the rainbow flag at the stadium outside the Romantic Zone neighborhood. She was invited by Victor Espindola, a leader with Movement for Equality in Mexico (MOVII). That same weekend, she screened her documentary at the International Convention Center. Later, in May, she was inaugurated as the ambassador of Vallarta Pride, where she not only led the parade, but also delivered a conference in collaboration with the Trevor Project.

Her commitment to advocacy continues with the Vallarta Diversity Network, local politicians and authorities, as she lobbies for a version of the Paola Buenrostro Law in the state of Jalisco.

Kenya’s impact on Puerto Vallarta can be seen in the founding and government continuation with the Municipal Diversity Council. She presented the Guide to Care for Diverse Women at the Women’s Justice Center. Furthermore, she organized health awareness events. She went on to extend her outreach to a university and a high school with conferences and also provided training for civil servants and prison staff on understanding and respecting sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression.

Her tenure as Vallarta Pride ambassador is ongoing, Kenya’s influence extends beyond speeches and initiatives. Her story, advocacy, and voice are vital for raising awareness and transforming mindsets. Each visit and engagement she undertakes reinforces her dedication to a brighter future for the LGBTQ+ community in Puerto Vallarta and beyond.

THE ULTIMATE REVENGE

Kenya’s catchphrase in life is that “her ultimate revenge is to be happy.” And she often ends her conference talks with the community celebrating happiness.

But despite the demanding schedule that comes with her tireless work defending the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, Kenya is celebrating a personal milestone this year when, in a heartfelt moment under the iconic pier in Los Muertos beach, her boyfriend — Ángel Ramírez, proposed marriage—which—filled with emotion and certainty of their love, Kenya accepted with a resounding “yes.” (Watch photo on page 62)

Kenya and Ángel’s paths first crossed through their respective social work initiatives. Ángel leads ARCA, an organization focused on reducing substance abuse risks and promoting new masculinities. It was their mutual recognition at an awards ceremony that brought them closer and prompted them to celebrate together. Before long, they realized that their journey was just beginning. Amidst their busy lives, they found

ways to intertwine their aspirations for a more equitable world while reinforcing their bond. Together, Kenya and Ángel exemplify that love flourishes not only in tranquil times but also through shared battles.

Today, she is happily in love, she’s alive, and she's enjoying life like never before. Despite the persistent challenges, Kenya is thriving, illustrating that she has carved out her place in the world through love and resilience.

And once again love seems to be the true revenge that paves the way for happiness for all.

PUERTO VALLARTA'S LGBTQ+ CENTER EXPANDS,

OFFERS NEW SERVICES

PROGRAMMING INCLUDES:

The Vallarta Gay+ Community Center (VGCC) is experiencing a period of rapid growth and expansion, transforming into a vital hub for Puerto Vallarta's LGBTQ+ community.

The organization recently quadrupled the space at Morelos #101 Local 3b, occupying the former space that Vallarta Co-Work used to utilize. It now has space to provide the health services it needs but also community meetings and group activities.

MONDAY: MODERN DANCE AND STRETCHING

TUESDAY: MOVIE NIGHT

WEDNESDAY: BALLROOM GROUPS

THURSDAY: SUBSTANCE ABUSE SUPPORT GROUP (SOON TO BEGIN )

FRIDAY: LIVING WITH HIV (SUPPORT GROUP) AND GROUP MEETING FOR THOSE WHO ARE DEAF AND GAY

“We have been holding focus groups with various constituents, including youth, sex workers, trans, gay men and lesbian women,” said Pedro Lopez, executive director. “And we are developing a host of services to meet the needs.”

Growing from 50 square meters in space (which hosts the health care component) to 290 square meters is now allowing VGCC to provide a welcoming and open space for the LGBTQ+ community to utilize.

Those services include the core health care component that the center was established forprevention and treatment of HIV and STIs (PreP services, HIV testing, etc.) and now programming for the LGBTQ+ community.

In just a year, VGCC has quickly filled a need in the communitylocal business leaders organized, established a board of directors, raised funds, hired an executive director, a physician, and more staff, and found a home.

“And,” Lopez said, “We are now also providing PreP services to more than 500 clients.”

As Donald Trump prepares to take the Presidency in the United States, Lopez said the Board of Directors is also looking ahead to provide services to gay Mexicans who may be deported from the United States.

“We just had a board retreat and one of our immediate future projects that the board wants to start preparing for is those gay Mexicans who may be deported and don’t have a family or home to return to,” Lopez said. “They

will be displaced with no network to fall back on. How will they survive? We want resources in place to help.”

And another project that will soon be rolled out is to provide legal support for the gay community. Lopez said they will be utilizing students who are majoring in Law to volunteer with the center to help provide legal guidance and support for the communitynot legal advice, but a way to help understand the different systems in place and how to help navigate them.

“I am very excited about that program,” Lopez added.

All of these programs require money, and fundraising is ongoing. In addition to the new space and programs, a looming roof repair will require funds before next year’s rainy season begins.

“And we have some office reconfiguration construction that needs to be done, and we want to have some portable wall dividers placed in the large open space that we use for groups so that we can utilize it better,” he explained.

The Vallarta Gay+ Community Center is quickly becoming a vital hub for Puerto Vallarta's LGBTQ+ community. With its recent expansion, the center now offers a variety of services and programs, from healthcare to social activities, to support the needs of its diverse membership. As the center continues to grow, it is poised to play an even greater role in the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals in the region, particularly as they face potential challenges in the coming years.
