Welcome to our 2023 Art and Culture Guide, our winter 2023 issue. In this issue we feature a variety of stories that focus on Puerto Vallarta’s thriving art community and its rich cultural heritage.

Art takes the form of more than just paintings on a wall. In Puerto Vallarta it takes the shape of so much more - from custom designed jewelry to beautiful tile work, you’ll find Vallarta home to so many welcoming and talented artisans from so many different backgrounds.

Our content this month not only has stories about art, its creation, and its role in Puerto Vallarta, but also culture. We explore some of the drag culture in Puerto Vallarta, and take a look at how a theater troupe is helping to shape local culture.

Our cover stories this month focus on two very different forms of art - one, art lovers and gallerist David and Santiago, the Art Boys at Browne Galeria. And we talk with botanist turned sculptor, Roger Josafath.

DAVID BROWN AND SANTIAGO REDMOND, WHO LOVINGLY CALL THEMSELVES THE “ART BOYS”, ARE LIVING EXAMPLES OF TAKING A PASSIONATE HOBBY AND MAKING IT INTO A NEW CAREER.

Motivated by a love of art, compelled by the love of the people in Puerto Vallarta, the Art Boys have been longtime visitors of Puerto Vallarta. But opening an art gallery wasn’t exactly in their immediate goals until David underwent a major life change.

An unplanned career change led him to some deep soul searching, and while he had spent his entire career in the corporate world, it no longer appealed to him. So the two Chicagoans talked about what the future might look like for them. Santiago was working in retail, and was also open to something new.

So in the course of literally a few months, they landed on the idea of an art gallery, uprooted their lives in Chicago, found space for the new gallery and began the renovation process.

“We moved the process along very fast,” David explained. “We made the decision in June 2018 that we wanted to do this. We moved to Puerto Vallarta in October, 2018 selling everything we had in Chicago. We opened the gallery in November 2018. I made several trips looking for the right location, but I actually found the place we are in now on the second trip.”

And while the two are experienced at finding art they both like - setting up art for exhibition and sale presented a whole new challenge - finding artists with art they both liked and wanted to be able to sell and represent.

They currently have a gallery that holds a variety of works from many different artists - but you’ll see a common theme, the use of vibrant colors. You’ll see male and gay art in the gallery. You’ll see colorful art created by masters, Omar Garcia de Alba as well as Oscar Basulto, along with other Mexican artists: queer, straight and female artists.

“We knew the direction we wanted to go with the art,” Santiago said. “We wanted vibrant, bright colors that help capture the essence of

Puerto Vallarta - a happy place. When we look at an artist and their work, we are looking for ways to connect the community - and the world - to the poetry of the colors created by the artist … to connect through the stories in the textures and the narratives through every movement and gesture created by our artists’ works.”

Finding those artists, and managing the logistics of getting the work from the brush to the gallery, consumes much of their time.

“It’s a very personal relationship with each artist,” David said. “We currently have about 15 to 20 different artists and vendors that we work with.”

More than 70 percent of the art they currently sell is shipped back to the USA. They have a custom crate maker that comes in and creates a crate for each piece of art shipped.

While the pandemic almost crushed their dreams, the rebound after

has helped fuel their future hopes. That, along with the condo building boom in Puerto Vallarta, has them looking to the future with plans to potentially even add a second gallery in Zona Romantica.

“We do offer interior design and art curation services, sharing with you over 15 years of experience in design and art curation,” Santiago explained. “We’ve helped with the interior design of some beautiful properties here. And if you need help buying some art, we have what we call our Red-E Club (an art layaway program).”

The gallery is open six days a week, with both owners stressing that they are more than just gallerists.

“We are foremost art lovers and collectors,” David said. “It’s not unusual for us to fall in love with a piece and purchase it for ourselves to enjoy. That’s what makes this career so different from the lives we came from. Here we can use our passion and love for art and share it

with others.”

Another challenge was finding a balance between work and home life. The two spend a lot of time together. And that took some fine tuning as they started to work together.

“Oh yes,” Santiago said with a laugh. “While we spent a lot of time together before, we always had our jobs to go to. Here, our jobs are our lives. And so it took time to find the balance and to be able to decide which parts of the gallery each of us would manage.”

David handles much of the artists management - from the logistics with the artists to the planning of shows and managing space in the gallery. Santiago works on dayto-day operations and customer service relationships.

“We love it and we love the relationships we have with our clients,” Santiago said. “Many will send us photos of the art once they get it home and on display. Our artists are thrilled when they can see feedback like that.”

Botanist Turns Love of Nature into Art

PANDEMIC SPARKS NEW CAREER FOR ROGER JOSAFATH

Roger knew at a very young age – probably around five-years old – that he loved nature, plants and working with his hands.

He grew up in Mazatlán Sinaloa Mexico, as part of a large, traditional family. The 37-years-old artist dreamed of owning a ranch one day – and becoming a botanist to teach people the art of organic farming.

“I am a botanist,” explains Roger so the forms found in nature and life, in all its diversity, are my biggest influence.

In 2018 Roger moved to Puerto Vallarta and initially worked with the interior design company, HACIENDA:hda. Here, he honed his ability to select pieces and design interiors which reflected his clients’ desires, emotions and thoughts, resulting in spaces with a unique sense of belonging.

But little did he know that when the pandemic struck in 2020 how much that would change his life direction and career.

“The pandemic slowed the work and I found myself, like everyone else, with too much time on my hands,” he explains. “I initially thought about making beaded jewelry, but was given the opportunity to create a sculpture for HACIENDA:hda".

He loved it. His hands were working again and while it wasn't the soil from gardening it was the cold feel of plaster and thus a new career started. Since then he has been commissioned and made more that 300 pieces of art that his hands have shaped.

“I use my love of sculpting to create works of art that speak to a need of forms, textures and structures that are intended to communicate my love for the art I create and my desire to enhance the beauty of the lives of others.”

His very first piece came out– in an abstract form of a person running. But like all abstract art, it is what the viewer sees. He sold that sculpture, and it was later given back to him by a grateful client for Christmas in December 2020, saying it reflected the passion he could see in Roger.

Roger, how did you develop your artistic skills?

“My skills evolved organically through experimentation with my own style and techniques and through challenging myself to push the limits of my medium in form and function.”

Tell us about your favorite medium?

“I love to work in plaster-of-paris because it is easy to manipulate to reflect my vision of the pieces I wish to create and concrete because it is a stronger material when needed to enhance the functionality of my art.”

Describe how art is important to people?

“Art helps people process and visualize their emotions and understand their surroundings. It allows people to see life from a different perspective and it makes one feel alive.”

How do you define success as an artist?

“For me success in my ability to inspire people with my artwork and my story, so that they can find a path to discover their own talent.”

Does art help you in other areas of your life?

“It has given me the opportunity to meet many interesting people from all walks of life and who share the same love of art.”

How can your work affect societal issues?

“As a gay artist, I feel that I can be a positive representative for my community while also being able to reach out to a broader diversity of society and find common ground through our shared love of art.”

How has your style changed over time?

“When I first started out as an artist, my compositions were more abstract, but now are more functional and natural in form.”

Do you have an existing customer base?

“Yes, I have many customers that,

after buying one of my works of art, have come back to me with requests to make unique pieces that complement their needs and desires.”

How do you manage a work-life balance as an artist?

“My artwork is my passion. When creating, I am only focused on my art and what it will look like when completed, so I lose all track of time. As such, I spend more time in my art studio than at home.”

Roger’s pieces cost anywhere from $5,000 pesos up to $150,000 pesos. He does custom work based on orders placed by clients. The largest order placed so far has been 18 pieces for a client’s home –everything from lamps to tables.

RICHARD LUCAS TALKS VALLARTA DRAG CULTURE, AND GOUDA’S LONG CAREER

DRAG IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE CULTURE IN ANY THRIVING GAY CITYESPECIALLY ONE LIKE PUERTO VALLARTA. IN PUERTO VALLARTA YOU’LL FIND TWO DIFFERENT “DRAG SCENES”. THEATER DRAG QUEENS WHO SING LIVE, AND CLUB QUEENS WHO LIP SYNCH. THE UNIQUE DRAG CULTURE IN PV ALLOWS PERFORMERS OF BOTH TYPES TO BE SUPPORTIVE OF EACH OTHER.

Richard Lucas is one of those theater queens. He’s known around the world as the founder of Lucas Talent, - the largest talent and literary agency in Canada - but he’s known in Puerto Vallarta as its very own Gouda Gabor.

He’s an old queen - while he won’t tell you his age, he does admit that he’s had work done and has worked in show business for at least 55 years. As part of the older queen establishment, he represents a thriving part of Puerto Vallarta’s drag queen scene - those queens who can sing and perform and not just lip sync. These include Hedda Lettuce, Stevie Hart, Karma La Perra, Mama Tits, Miss Conception, Sutton Lee Seymour, to name just a few.

He got his start booking entertainments in 1986 and established Lucas Talent, Inc. but it wasn’t until he decided that he wanted to sing that a friend suggested he create a character and do it in drag.

“I developed this drag persona so I could sing,” explained Lucas. “When I started I felt like, who wanted to hear me sing? I wanted to do something different than me. And that’s when Gouda Gabor was born.”

Gabor is the lost Gabor sister, he explained with a smile. And for those who may not remember, the Gabor sisters - Eva, Magda and Zsa Zsa Gabor, were HungarianAmerican socialites and actresses.

“I decided I was the lost Gabor sister,” Lucas explained. “I was the one who didn’t marry a rich man and didn’t have a TV series. I got stuck doing dinner theater. And I

had a chip on my shoulder because I never got to be rich or as famous as the other Gabor sisters.”

One of his first gigs as Gouda was at a Gastown club, a neighborhood in Vancouver, Canada. Many years ago a very nervous Gouda Gabor sang a four-song set that included “Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart.” Many years later, and many refinements to the character, and you’ll still find the same sassy Gouda slinging oneliners out to the audiences.

Lucas now splits his time between Puerto Vallarta and Victoria, British Columbia. Born in Nova Scotia, Canada, he spent his childhood in North Saanich,B.C.. He purchased a home in Puerto Vallarta five years ago, and loves getting away from the rainy Victoria winters.

Lucas is a true performer. In addition to having a BFA Acting from the University of Alberta and later receiving various graduate degrees, he’s worked as a professional actor, director and producer (he even toured for a few years opposite Gale Gordon (from The Lucy Show). He professionally sang as a young actor (he was in the Canadian premiere of Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat) but did not sing professionally after he opened the agency in 1986 - he didn’t want to compete with the clients that his agency represented. Its only a persona that comes out when Gouda Gabor shows up.

Not only is Gouda Gabor a big personality on stage, she’s got a big voice to match it. Her shows are fun, and can be unpredictable. Often her zingy one liners are unscripted and just happen as she watches life unfold before her.

“I may stop in the middle of a song to throw out a witty sassy one-liner,” he said with a smile. “Gouda can be a bitch sometimes.”

It takes Gouda probably close to two hours to get ready for a show. There’s a lot of tucking to do, the right gown to select and of course the right wig.

“I think the art of drag has definitely changed over the years,” he said. “Drag mothers use to teach how to do makeup, how to dress, how to perform. Now people learn all of that from the internet.”

Which is just one part of the drag culture he sees changing, that he wants to see preserved. He explained that the “old school cabaret” presentation of drag was so important to its history.

“Yes, definitely we see the culture changing, the rise in how people look, their fashion,” he said. “But we also see a decline in the art of performance. The art form is definitely raised by what I call the ‘look queens’ but you can easily watch an episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race and see those that don’t understand how to perform.”

Gouda has performed at every show venue in Zona Romantica - Act2PV, The Palm Cabaret and Incanto. She calls Incanto her home now (her fifth season there), and performs just one night a week. She just finished up a show in December 2022 called “Glitter and Gold” (Michael Ferreri joined her on the piano) and opened up “Whine and Cheese” in January 2023. Joining her show on the piano is the very talented Mark Hartman.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS TO DO WHEN I TRAVEL IS TO SHOP FOR A PIECE OF ART FROM THE CITY OR REGION I’M VISITING. IN THE PROCESS, I USUALLY LEARN SOMETHING ABOUT THE REGION’S HISTORY, CULTURE AND ART, AND WHEN I RETURN HOME, EVERYTIME I WALK BY THE ART IN MY HOUSE, I’M TRANSPORTED BACK TO MY TRAVEL EXPERIENCE. THE ART GIVES ME A REAL SENSE OF JOY BECAUSE OF THE MEMORIES ASSOCIATED WITH IT.

Puerto Vallarta is rich with art from all parts of Mexico but one of my favorite types of art from this region is Huichol art which originated in the states of Jalisco and Nayarit. Wixáritari, the indigenous people who create the art, mostly live in the mountainous areas of the region. Huichol is derived from the word Wirriarika, which means soothsayer or medicine man in the Huichol language.

The faith of the Huichol people very much influences the art with the foundation based on a “trinity” of veneration of the deer, corn and peyote. The origin of Huichol art lies in an ancient tradition involving the transcription of images displayed by the shamans after ingesting peyote (hikuri), a sacred cactus.

Vallarta because of the vibrant colors in the yarn, beaded pieces and textiles. Originally, the art was created with natural items such as clay, stone, shells, coral, seeds with color dyes made from vegetables. A bit of history, the glass beads used in beaded art were first introduced in the 1700’s as a way to introduce Christianity to the Wixáritari people. The glass beads were adopted but Christinanity wasn’t. Today, wax is still used to adhere the glass beads to wood carvings,

similar to how the art was created in the 1700’s.

Many stores and galleries in Puerto Vallarta display and sell Huichol art. Two of my favorite shops/ galleries for Huichol art are Peyote People in Zona Romantica and Centro and the Tierra Huichol stores on Olas Altas street and the Malecon.

Peyote People is a special place for many different types of Mexican art. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Max Simpson, an art curator for Peyote

People. Max Simpson has a wealth of information about the art as his parents are the owners of the stores and gallery.

Max has visited the Wixáritari people with his father in the mountains where they live. He is extremely passionate about preserving the history of the art as well as continuing to elevate it as a truly beautiful, unique art form representing the culture of Mexico as well as benefit the Wixáritari people.

At the shops you can sometimes watch artists create pieces. It's amazing to watch the concentration, intensity and patience needed to create one of these magnificent pieces.

Over the years, I’ve purchased both Huichol beaded and yarn art for myself and as gifts. The beauty of this art is that it's available in many different forms, both large and small, including items you can wear. My favorite pieces are the beaded shapes of animals. At first glance, you notice the amazing colors but with a closer look, you see the intricate designs each telling a story and representing an aspect of the Wixáritari people and their beliefs.

So next time you are shopping in Puerto Vallarta for a gift for yourself or others, consider purchasing a piece of Huichol art and the Mexican culture and history it represents. You won’t be disappointed.

Wednesday’s ArtWalk Features 16 Galleries in Centro’s ‘Art District’

Which is why you’ll find Vallarta home to more than 30+ art galleries, with at least half of those clustered in what is informally called the Art District in Centro.

During the "Art Season" from October to June, an event called ArtWalk is held every Wednesday. Gallery’s typically host “open house”

type receptions during the walk. You can easily go and visit some 16 galleries over just a few hours. The participating galleries in Centro Historico exhibit works by important national and international artists. Remarkable paintings, exceptional sculptures, fine ceramics and jewelry are offered. The galleries that are in the Centro (Art District) Art Walk include:

GALERÍA COLECTIKA focuses on the evolution of Mexican Art. New colors, forms and techniques have been adapted from the outside world by well-known native and Mexican folk artists.

ONLY ONE are Mexican goldsmiths since 1910. Pieces formed by hand with the best techniques, small art pieces to wear.

GALERÍA CÓRSICA Features Works of Art selected by international collector and curator Jean-Pierre Renucci. All the artists presented are part of important collections all over the world.

EMOTIONS BY CÓRSICA Presents Art by emerging Mexican artists curated by Jean-Pierre Renucci for a younger, more hip audience.

GALERIA PÁJARO ROJO is a gallery in search of enhancing the talent and creativity of Mexican contemporary artists.

ZEUS DOMINICO ART GALLERY

23 YEARS IN PUERTO VALLARTA

Cassandra Shaw is a jewelry designer, painter, and business owner based in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Born and raised in Canada, Cassandra moved to Puerto Vallarta in 1999 and after more than two decades here she has not once regretted the move. Her Cassandra Shaw Jewelry store on Basilio Badillo in the heart of the Romantic Zone is a famous “go-to” in Vallarta, and her jewelry designs can be seen as walking displays on her customers here, and around the world.

IMPORTED GEM

Originally from British Columbia, Canada the first time Cassandra came to Vallarta was in 1983 with her sister, when they were just 18 and 20. In Canada Cassandra never had time to pursue her interest in art because she was working long hours at a local pub. The daughter of an RCMP Constable (aka Canadian “Mountie”) Cassandra moved to Vancouver as an adult, where she lived from 1986 to 1999.

Cassandra worked at the neighborhood pub on Commercial Drive in Vancouver for 14 years,

eventually running it. She loved her job managing the pub but when the business sold she lost her job. Luckily the owners gave her a settlement and she happily received the “golden-handshake," and knew exactly what she was going to do with the money. Travel.

Cassandra bought a ticket to see her sister in Puerto Vallarta, who had stayed in Mexico when she fell in love and married there. Cassandra didn’t quite morph into a bohemian barefoot artist, but was finally able to focus on painting. Six months later she went back to Vancouver to sell her home and possessions and has lived in PV since1999. Cassandra has never for one second ever regretted that decision.

CASSANDRA SHAW JEWELRY

Asked about her bold and recognizable signature style, Cassandra confesses she didn’t have one design in mind when she started designing jewelry. She knew what she liked.

“I was really attracted to natural, big bold pieces,” she said. “Bone pieces were my first love, and I wear that myself, the tone and color go with everything.”

Getting her start working in a Jewelry store in Vallarta, when the owners split up Cassandra began designing her own jewelry and excelled from there. The versatility of her pieces are unique in that they all come apart so you can redesign them as you like. It gives her customers a lot of creativity when they’re getting dressed, giving you more control of your own style without having a designer telling you what to do with it or how to wear it.

favorites in that it's a common stone but it's very intense and its beauty comes from color under the surface of the stone.

Cassandra feels that her main value to her clients is not just design, but her service. If something breaks or a stone falls out, she will fix that for them without cost. Her clients are her biggest fans because they know that she looks after them.

“That makes me feel confident and worthy of having a successful business,” she explained. “Because I’m not gonna turn my back once I make a sale.”

CUSTOM PET PORTRAITS

When Cassandra arrived in Puerto Vallarta in 1999 she made a commitment to art. Allotting a certain amount of time every day to painting and design, Cassandra’s skills developed over time. She had dedicated a portion of her day, every single day, towards painting. She recalls working all day and going home and still picking up her paintbrush. She began doing workshops with one of her mentors Lucille Shipley, who has since passed, and painted with her for 20 years.

Cassandra continues to paint, focusing on her custom order Pet Portraits. One of the compelling things about painting is you start with nothing and then, as Cassandra says, it’s your job to

make it into something. She brings to life the creativity and beauty, and she always likes to add a little something that is not so serious. Something playful. This makes her animal portraits look quirky and cheeky because she brings out the expression in their faces.

THE CASSANDRA SHAW STARLIGHT CABARET

On her contribution to the Act2PV Theatre in Puerto Vallarta, inspiring the newly named Cassandra Shaw Starlight Cabaret, Cassandra confided that she’s always supported the arts. She hadn’t always contributed in such a big way that she did this year with a substantial donation, but she has always been a patron and promoter of the theatre, and specifically of the more family focused shows. Cassandra stepped up financially because Act2PV really needed help this year and it would have been a tragedy to this town if they were unable to open their doors, not just for the talent, but for the crew and staff it employs.

NOT JUST WEATHER & NOT JUST PEOPLE

Cassandra makes a great point that obviously many expats who have moved here would agree with, it’s more loving here, there really is a community. And that community has your back and makes you feel safe. She believes that there are so many

different reasons to be happy here and it’s not just the weather, and it’s not just the people…but those are the two biggest reasons.

“This next chapter of my life as I go off on my own and move into a new home, I feel more like myself,” she said. “I’m free to decide how my days are going to be and that feels good.”

It's clear to me that community, grace, design, and art may be the defining words for both Cassandra and Puerto Vallarta.

unpainted so that the black and white newspaper copy is the star of a more rustic creation, such as their line of cheeky chihuahuas, but they say it is their bright tropical color palette that attracts the buyers to their wares.

This Vallarta couple practices artistic recycling and creates handmade whimsical and colorful paper mache animals, flowers, jewelry, and platters.

The artists met in their home city of León in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato. On their very first date in December 2003, it was love at first sight and Mauricio asked Beto to move to Vallarta with him. Almost twenty years later they are still hereand still a couple in life and in art.

Mauricio was originally a civil engineer, but a friend who was a professional puppeteer arrived in Leon for a major art fair with his luggage and all his puppets missing, so Mauricio and friends came together to learn the art of paper mache from a master. They worked feverishly for the next few days to help him replace all the lost work and the big transition from engineer to artist was born.

THE PROCESS ITSELF IS FASCINATING

Mauricio explains that the first step is gathering cardboard egg cartons from the local mercados. At their workshop the cartons are cut into pieces and soaked in water for 24 hours, then smashed by hand on cement. Glue, flour, and lime are then added to make the paste that is now ready to be applied to the original plaster molds they create. Then each piece is sanded and painted with a white base coat before applying an array of bright colors and a coat of varnish. Sometimes they leave the art

When asked his favourite animal to create, Mauricio shares that it is the humble frog “because Mother Nature makes frogs of all colors, some beautiful and some scary.”

Other favorite works include a series of owls, some in tecolote (traditional Aztec), and others in more modern Mexican buho style.

Their beautiful array of products range from small take-home souvenirs at $250 pesos to larger home décor works of art for $1,750 pesos. The average price of their pieces is $400 to $600 pesos. Tourists love the easy travel items like earrings, pendants and the smaller animals, while many new Vallarta residents are buying the bigger pieces to display in their condos.

Mauricio and Alberto, like many, had a rough time during the pandemic but they say those struggles resulted in them becoming even more creative and made them stronger.

They hope to soon resume teaching workshops for others to learn the art of paper mache and would love to hear from a gallery that is interested in displaying and selling their creations. SEEKING MEXICAN CULTURE

San Francisco was a nice place to grow up, as Tamale Ringwald recalls, and Tamale’s father’s side of the family were Mexican, but they didn’t speak a lot of Spanish. It’s pretty common for immigrants to not teach their kids Spanish because they want you to acclimate into America. The result was Tamale didn’t really grow up with a lot of Mexican culture, so he has always been seeking it out. Although Tamale went to school to become a professional

dancer for ballet and modern dance, every time he choreographed a dance he would create a painting to go along with it. Always visually expressing himself Tamale began taking painting seriously in 1999 when he had his first art show in Los Angeles under his art handle Danyol. com. The success of the show gave him the inspiration and belief that he could excel at his art.

A multifaceted performer Tamale does a drag show once a month and has a punk band called Muñecas in San Francisco. In the summer months he goes to San Francisco and plays with them at queer festivals. They also get together and write new music in the summer, Muñecas has four albums on Bandcamp.com.

NEVER LOOK BACK

Although they had been traveling to Puerto Vallarta on holidays for the past 15 years, Tamale and his husband moved here officially three years ago. They fell in love with Puerto Vallarta as many do, so they packed up their suitcases and dog and moved to PV, and never looked back.

Inspired by large pop art like Warhol, Lichtenstein, and Jasper Johns, Tamale wanted to paint large enough to cover an entire wall. So he called well-known Vallarta singer Effie Passero and asked her if he could paint her a mural, of course she said yes. So, Tamale went over with a bunch of paint and did a massive Frida Kahlo mural which got a lot of attention and a lot of traction on Instagram.

So it began that Tamale started striking out doing murals, and people now bring him out to Seattle, San Francisco, or Palm Springs to do their murals. This is a chance to paint big and travel.

COME OUT & DANCE

Growing up, Tamale’s church had a performing arts group where they performed The Sound Of Music and went on tour. At the same time Tamale was working at Disneyland, and joined the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on their national tour.

Tamale confesses that he probably did try to pray himself straight but it was weird, his church was half

gay, but nobody talked about it. One night after a Tori Amos concert, Tamale just walked across the street into a gay bar and announce that he was gay. “Somehow Tori Amos just brought the gay out of me which I think happens to a lot of people.”

KAFTANS & JOCKSTRAPS

Tamale wanted to see how his art would translate to fabric.

“Because the style of art that I do is very squares on squares, it almost looks like pixels and I thought it would lend itself nicely to a step and repeat thing like a pattern so I started playing around with that, so I hooked up with my great friend José Luis in Puerto Vallarta under his brand Joselo.shop,” he said. Tamale provided the art for the fabric and just started playing with it and so now he has a line of clothing including speedos, shorts, jockstraps, tank tops, and kaftans all done under the Joselo brand.

GAY PHONE “CHATLINE”

years ago, Tamale’s romance predates the internet. Gay hotlines where a big part of queer culture in the early 90s. “That’s how, if you weren’t comfortable going to the bars or if you were in the closet, that’s how you met people.”

‘EVERY BODY’ CRUISE NOW

Coming to Vallarta and just being yourself and being genuine goes a long way, is Tamale’s experience. He and Sugarbaker always loved going on cruises and whale watching. So, they thought, why don’t they do something but put their stank on it so to speak. “Give it a weird

San Francisco feel. I didn’t see any companies that were marketing to fringe communities like elder gays or the trans community or lesbians or people of color, or women, so I purposely wanted to start a cruise company that was for everybody and every body,” Ringwald said.

Tamale and Sugarbaker were very fortunate to have a number of local bar owners and business owners put their support behind them because they genuinely liked them and they liked their product. Tamale’s Tours’ first season was in 2021 and they only ran once a month. They were really successful their first year,

so the next year they did it once a week and they continue to run it once a week, every Friday, from Thanksgiving till Pride. And they just completed their first ever New Year’s Eve cruise which Tamale was so excited about.

“We had a blast with live performers and a DJ, go-go dancers, magicians, it’s was something different,” he exclaimed.

ROCK THE BOAT

“I’m gonna be 53 and my husband’s gonna be 75 and we have a lot of experience in what we’re doing

with travel, event planning, and working in bars, and restaurants and working with the public, and Disneyland,” he said. “…and all of that lines up into what we do now. I mean, if I could paint on a boat while wearing a kaftan with my art on it, while playing guitar…now that would be perfect.”

Inspired by Nature, Guzman Paints From the Heart

LUIS GUZMAN HAS KNOWN SINCE HE CAN REMEMBER THAT HIS HANDS AND HEART WERE MEANT TO PAINT.

This mostly self-taught artist thinks he probably inherited the ability from his father, who would often draw in front of him. It wasn’t until he was 19 though, six years after he moved to the United States, that he went to his first art show and fell in love with art. It also sparked his curiosity to explore the artist in him that was begging to be let out.

19 was an important age for Luis. Not only was the artist in him struggling to get out, he was also coming out

to his family as gay. It was a year of changes in the young artist's life. He made the important decision to leave Mexico and head to the United States to work and send money back home to help support his mother, father and five siblings.

“I first left our small village near Guanajuato, Mexico and found work in Michoacán, Mexico. But it didn’t pay enough to support my family and pay my bills,” Guzman explained. “So I headed to California where I worked for 15 years, sending money back to help support my family.”

He attended his first art show when he was 25. He knew when he saw the art that he wanted to create, and learn. He started watching Youtube

videos and taking classes at a local arts and crafts store.

“I wasn’t even sure what brushes to use,” he said. “I had a few people that helped mentor me along the way, show me some techniques, and allowed me to explore the art word and ask questions on how to do certain things.”

His first art was done on the walls of his first home that he had just moved into. The murals that he put on those walls prompted questions by visitors who encouraged him to do more.

“But,” he said. “My first art show was a disaster. I was very unprepared. Very unfocused on the art. I was more concerned with how I looked. I’ve learned so much since then. In my second show I sold six paintings. I learned as I went.”

He said his art is influenced by the things he sees, feels and experiences.

“But I’ve always loved nature, like butterflies, trees, flowers, the moon,” he said. “I particularly like red and black colors.”

He decided to leave his career as a CNA (certified nursing assistant) and focus on his art. But his love for his family drew him back to Mexico, and in 2015 - some 14 years without seeing his family - he moved back to Guanajuato and then to Michocan. In 2017 he moved to Puerto Vallarta to take a position as an assistant with Rainbow Realty.

“I love Puerto Vallarta,” he said. “I love being close to the ocean. I love the people. I love the food. I love the way it feels for my soul, being so close to the ocean and nature.”

You’ll find him now working full time as a real estate agent with Tropicasa Realty. He’s close to finishing up his work to become AMPI certified. But he continues to follow his real passion, art.

“I am mainly focused on commission-only paintings now,” he said. “I do quite a few commissioned landscape paintings and I also do murals inside and outside homes.”

One of his first murals in Puerto Vallarta is in a building called The Loft, which he titled, “run’.

His prices are reasonable - his art starts around $300 USD for a small painting and depending on the size and complexity of the art, into the thousands for a large wall mural.

Luis is currently single and a romantic at heart. He’s been single now for five years, and looks for a simple life with a future partner.

He’s also looking to grow his art business and opening his own gallery. A place he can display not only his art but those of other artists that he admires.

“I take a lot of my inspiration from Artist Ricardo Manzo, and the amazing detail and hidden elements in their paintings,” he said. “It’s amazing and beautiful.”

Mexican Drag Queen Jeybra Brings Fire to the Stage

CRISTIAN ALVARES WALKED DOWN THE SIDEWALK FOR OUR INTERVIEW LOOKING VERY HIP IN HIS SHORT OVERALLS WITH ONE SIDE UNHITCHED. WHILE WE HAD NEVER MET BEFORE, IT WAS CLEAR THIS WAS THE ONE AND ONLY JEYBRA QUEEN.

Thin, muscular and wiry, you could tell that Alvares is not the same person that appears on stage on Jeybra Qeen. The transformation is apparent, not only in his person, but his personality. Cristian is quiet and shy, a bit introverted. Jeybra is anything but those things. She is a fierce queen, very strong and sexy.

Jeybra Queen (the name is a take on the Zebra) arrived in Puerto Vallarta about three years ago, and brought to her act something not many other people can doacrobatics and aerial arts combined with fire.

Jeybra is first and foremost an acrobat and aerialist, she says. As Cristian, that’s his first love and something he has enjoyed since he was a child. It wasn’t until his late teenage years that he discovered dressing in drag allowed him to explore his more feminine side, and allowed other parts of his personality to shine through.

“I knew I was gay since I was very young,” Cristian said. “When I came out to my family, they were ok with that…..they just didn’t want me to dress as a woman.”

But now the family cheers Jeybra on, and supports her in her work and quest to perform and entertain.

Jeybra is rumored to have been selected to appear on the upcoming season of RuPaul’s Drag Race Mexico. Of course, she can’t commit on the process, she did confirm that she had applied via a video audition process. The submission deadline was August 26, 2022. Rupaul’s Drag Race is in its 14th season and has extended the franchise to Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Thailand and the Netherlands. When it announced it would premiere in Mexico, it also said it would premiere in Brazil and Germany. As we prepared this story for print, no

host or premier date for the show had been announced.

Jeybra’s shows are exciting, combining energy with her acrobatic skills and fire - yes fire. She’s trained in handling fire and combines it regularly with her drag shows.

“Yes, it’s dangerous and don’t do it unless you’ve been properly trained,” she said. “Even though I am experienced I often get burned.”

Jeybra is on staff at The View Bar and Restaurant and Blue Chairs, performing almost daily at The View and about twice a week at Blue Chairs. Like many in the Puerto Vallarta drag community, it’s more than a career for her. She said she puts about 90 percent of what she makes back into her shows and relies heavily on the generosity of strangers watching her show to tip appropriately.

She’s one of maybe about 30 Mexican drag queens who work at clubs regularly, and while the drag culture in Vallarta is competitive,

she enjoys living and working here.

“Here, well, there are so many people from all over the world, representing all different walks of life,” Cristian explained. “It's so interesting to be able to meet and talk with so many different people, and be able to do what you love.”

He said his looks as Jeybra are inspired by his love for cats - and you’ll find a feline feature in most of Jeybra’s costumes. He makes most of his own outfits and does his own makeup. He learned by watching tutorials on the internet. He had no “drag mother” to help provide guidance.

The 27-year-old who hails from Aguascalientes, Mexico, is single and said he wasn’t really looking to date anyone. His performance schedule as Jeybra Queen keeps him busywhen he’s not performing he is busy preparing for his next show. It’s a non-stop cycle that he loves.

He started his career at Bar Xtasis in Aguascalientes, and worked there

for about six years before he moved to Puerto Vallarta. An invitation to perform at CC’s Slaughters brought him to Vallarta, and while here, was offered a job. He said he stayed at CC’s about six months before settling in at The View and Blue Chairs.

“All of the Mexican drag queens here have different qualities that make them all so unique,” he said while talking about the Vallarta drag culture. “All are good at what they do. My shows are focused on me being very physical, with the fire and acrobatics.”

Theater: Local Companies Standing Out at the State Level

WHEN PEOPLE THINK ABOUT PUERTO VALLARTA AS AN ENTERTAINMENT TOURIST DESTINATION, THE WIDE VARIETY OF MUSICAL SHOWS AND THEATER PRODUCTIONS THAT ARE PRESENTED IN THE MAIN VENUES OF THE ROMANTIC ZONE OF PUERTO VALLARTA AND THAT ARE MAINLY DEDICATED TO OUR ENGLISH-SPEAKING VISITORS COME TO MIND.

However, it is important to recognize that in the city there are local groups with plays in Spanish and a long history on stage. Grupo de Teatro Dionisio and Boa Viagem Teatro are clear examples of these groups that have stood out - not only at the local level but at the state level - and that have exciting plans for this year.

“I would encourage all those who are visiting Puerto Vallarta to take the opportunity to see the work of the local theater groups. You are going to be pleasantly surprised, and will enjoy the city in an alternative way,” mentions Ramiro Daniel, director, playwright and founding member of Boa Viagem Teatro (2009).

Last December, Daniel won the "Great Playwriting Tournament" organized by the Coordination of Performing Arts of the University of Guadalajara within the framework of the Guadalajara International Book Fair, with his play titled “FUCK” and his intention is to premiere this project in 2023.

“My play was chosen through a call where the only requirement was that the story revolved around a LGBTIQ+ theme. It was the only playwriting in the contest representing Puerto Vallarta and faced three other plays from other municipalities of Jalisco,” Daniel explained. “FUCK” introduces a

transgender girl who is sent to a conversion therapy camp where she causes a revolution. The name is an acronym for Fornication Under Consent of the King, so we make an analogy about how society is like the king who dictates who you should and who you shouldn't be with.”

Throughout their 13-year history, Boa Viagem Teatro has been recognized on multiple occasions with awards at the Encuentro de Teatro del Interior (Interior Theater Encounter), including the categories of Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Original Playwriting, Best Play, Best Production and Best Direction. In addition, the group has repeatedly been selected to participate in the Muestra Estatal de Teatro (State Theater Exhibit), where they obtained an honorable mention in 2017 for the play “Un Hombre Ajeno”. For its part, Grupo de Teatro Dionisio celebrated its 10th anniversary last year with a variety show entitled “Las Hermanas Vallejo” (the Vallejo sisters) and with the premiere of “La Noche de la Guirnalda” (The Night of the Garland).

This last project was a collaboration with the renowned Guadalajara director David Jiménez Sánchez (member of the National System of Performing Arts Creators) and benefited from the Proyecta Producciones program.

The Night of the Garland tells the story of a coconut seller who is looking for his missing sister, who has eyes of a blue so deep that they seem violets. In his search, he relies on a drag queen, a waitress and other local characters who make up a mosaic that reflects what is lived in Puerto Vallarta.

“This is probably one of our most ambitious projects on an artistic level. We are out of our comfort zone and working, for the very first time, with a director who does not belong to our company and who comes from the capital city of the state. Grupo de Teatro Dionisio plans for 2023 include more shows of this play both in Puerto Vallarta and in other cities, as well as the return of their drag comedy “Amigas Desgraciadas” (Unfortunate Friends) and the second season of the monologue “2012: The world is going to end.

Dionisio Theater Group debuted in 2012 with “Abuelita de Batman”. With 13 productions in their career, the group has managed to stand out in the Jalisco State Theater Encounter with works such as “El Hombre sin Adjetivos” (2015) by Mario Cantú and “El Destripadero Veraz” (2021) by Jorge Fábregas. His most outstanding productions also include “La Ley del Ranchero”, “Amigas Desgraciadas”, “Las Tramoyanas” and “La Posada”.

GALLERIA DANTE IS ONE OF THE LARGEST FINE ART GALLERIES IN PUERTO VALLARTA (AND THE THIRD OLDEST), REPRESENTING MORE THAN 60 ARTISTS WITH AN AMAZING COLLECTION THAT INCLUDES 85 PERCENT MEXICAN ARTISTS.

For more than 27 years Galleria Dante has grown to have six exhibition rooms, two gardens, three floors and more than 5,000 pieces of art. It opened in 1995 from the devotion of Joe & Claire Guarniere.

They had been operating Pizza Joe in the same building space since 1988, but after serving dinner every evening for eight years, they looked to slow things down.

“We opened Pizza Joe in 1988, and it is still talked about,” Claire said. “We always decorated Pizza Joe with art and sold art in two adjacent rooms to the garden, but after 350 dinners per evening for eight years, we needed to slow down. So Galleria Dante was opened in 1995.”

Joe passed away in 2020, but his legend lives on in the gallery and the restaurant Di Vino Dante Tapas and Wine - operated by their daughter, Gena Guarniere. The restaurant opened in 2013, and describes itself as a meeting between the Mediterranean tradition and the growing wine wealth of Mexico.

“It is a true family business,” Claire said. “ Even though Joe passed in 2020, he will always be part of the decisions we make, as his loves are our loves.”

Claire arrived in Puerto Vallarta in 1982 from Saskatchewan, Canada. She worked in the restaurant business, and made desserts for restaurants.

“I met Joe in 1986 and he told me that if he had staff like me he would be back in the restaurant business,” she explained. “He grew up in a large Italian family, who owned three major restaurants in Michigan. So it was not hard to convince Joe to move to Mexico in 1987.”

Gena was born in Puerto Vallarta, and worked in the family business since she was a child. Gena studied wine and culinary in Vancouver, Canada, and moved to Puerto Vallarta in 2009 to help her parents in the gallery.

“She missed Pizza Joe and the restaurant business. But she really wanted to focus on tapas and

Mexican wines,” Claire explained. “So in 2013 she opened the restaurant. The menu continues to evolve, and probably has more of a mediterranean flair. Much of what our family has created has been influenced by our love of Greece, Italy and Mexico.”

The pandemic changed how most businesses did business, and the

gallery was no different, moving to an online auction to sell the art. It was a decision that helped keep the business afloat during those tough times.

“During the pandemic, we started promoting a program called ‘Art Rooms’ - it was a fun way to display art in beautiful rooms,” Claire said. “The online auctions were fun - some did better than others, and now clients are waiting for the next one. We found that some clients prefer to buy their art that way. But more than anything it kept us alive during Covid.”

And she said, during the downtime they took the initiative to add two air conditioned spaces for dining and installed an elevator to access all three levels of the restaurant and gallery.

Inside Galleria Dante and Di Vino Dante Restaurant you will find one of the few green spaces left in Old Town.

“My passion for art rivals my passion for plants,” Claire said. “We offer space for weddings, parties, birthdays and more. We have a rooftop garden and have created several event spaces for various size events. It’s just a lovely place.”

Claire said she has never regretted moving to Puerto Vallarta, and despite the many changes the city has experienced, and the popular growth, she continues to love living here.

“I know we all talk about the changes, but everywhere popular in the world changes,” she said. “The best thing about Puerto Vallarta is the people. And then, of course, our weather and the fact that we are protected from storms by the mountains and the bay.”

Studs Bear/ Leather Bar Expands to Two Floors

STUDS BEAR/LEATHER BAR ON BASILIO BADDIO HAS EXPANDED TO TWO FLOORS, TAKING OVER SPACE THAT WAS OCCUPIED BY THERAPY BAR.

Mike Owens, owner, said the expansion was necessary due to the popularity of Studs. It is the only bear/leather bar in Puerto Vallarta. Construction was finished in late December 2022, and a newly installed staircase connects both floors. Customers will see the familiar black/red colors from the upstairs Studs bar now flowing into the downstairs area as well.

“Studs was bursting at the seams on many nights,” Owens said. “And as the area’s only bear/leather bar, we knew it would be popular. We just had to expand the area and create more space. Upstairs will continue to be men only.”

“And if you are hungry you can purchase food and eat in the downstairs area,” Owens said. “The food menu has expanded to include a few more finger food choices. The very popular sushi is still on the menu, and he said you can now order the full menu via home delivery on Uber Eats and Rappi.

More seating has been added in the downstairs area. The bar is open from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m., seven days a week. Happy hour is from 6 to 8 p.m. everyday. The bar menu includes beer, classic cocktails, and a small assortment of wine.

“We are playing classic rock from the DJ booth from 6 to 9 p.m.,” explained Hector Morales, director of operations. “And at 9 p.m. we play techno music. Our sound system allows us to play the same or different music for each floor of the bar, so we’re excited to be able to experiment with what we can do.”

Go go boys are performing on both floors, and the very popular gear shop has been expanded to offer more items on the first floor. Theme nights like jockstrap night, leather night, and lights out night are offered on different nights of the week.

“Those events have been so popular,” Morales said. “We’re excited that we have been able to expand the events and create more space for our customers.”
