Mayor Trantalis’ Monthly Newsletter

The city’s continuing investigation of the best way that commuter rail traffic can cross the New River has begun to bear some incredible results — results that could reshape the ongoing discussions with state and county officials about the viability of a tunnel instead of a bridge.

First, the city’s consultants at BDO have announced their findings that address concerns previously raised about tunnel construction and future operations. They concluded a tunnel could be built at a third of the cost that other consultants estimated earlier and in a way that would not require the additional expense of forcing nearby property owners to sell their land as they would need to do for a bridge.

Second, the builder and operator of the Port of Miami tunnel has come forward with details of their success,

providing an independent and unvarnished analysis of tunneling in South Florida. They have even stated that they would be interested in eventually submitting a proposal for a public-private partnership for a New River tunnel.

While Broward County is moving forward with planning for a high-rise bridge splitting our downtown, these new developments breathe fresh life into the tunnel alternative. During a tour of the Miami tunnel with county leaders, we began seeing new openness to the idea. We hope this cooperative spirit can continue forward. Here’s what the BDO consultants have told us.

They have drawn up rough designs that illustrate a tunnel could be built with no disruption to current Brightline trains or freight traffic. This is of critical

16 | OutClique.com

importance to both Brightline and the Florida East Coast Railroad.

The tunnel would be shallow at 55 feet deep, thus not requiring substantial digging. Brightline has reviewed the proposed gradient in the proposed tunnel and said that it is acceptable for commuter traffic.

The design keeps the tunnel entirely within the railroad’s existing right-of-way except at the river itself, where it would deviate slightly to avoid the pilings of the existing train bridge. There would be the need to obtain the underground rights to three small portions of property — two are owned by the city and the third is owned by a developer who is willing to work with us because of the substantial impact a bridge would have on his planned project.

Some people have questioned the resiliency of a tunnel given the flooding and heavy rains experienced in the region. But BDO plans for that by installing major flood gates at each portal. Others question whether there would be vibration during construction that could harm existing structures, but BDO notes that the tunneling technology they propose has been used under highly developed locations such as Chinatown in San Francisco.

BDO’s estimated price tag is $888 million, less than the $3 billion that other consultants suggested. While more than the almost $600 million that the county estimates a bridge would cost, BDO says the difference likely could be made up through new federal infrastructure grant funding. Also, BDO estimates that the operation and maintenance of the tunnel would cost $2.5 million a year. That’s one-tenth of what other consultants estimated. Meanwhile, there are the developments with Miami.

A month or so ago, Chris Hodgkins, the head of the concessionaire operating the Miami Tunnel, reached out to my office inviting me to tour the facility in light

of our ongoing discussions. The Miami tunnel was built through a public-private partnership between the Florida Department of Transportation and a consortium of two international firms – Meridiam and Bouygues. It was the first ever P3 for FDOT and required the consortium to design, finance, build, operate and maintain the port tunnel. The deal has now been used internationally as a model for P3 infrastructure projects.

The project was completed $90 million under its $1 billion price tag and on time.

Hodgkins noted to the group that the Miami tunnel had to address resiliency concerns similar to the questions raised in Fort Lauderdale. They built flood gates like those that BDO has proposed and have used them multiple times during hurricane warnings.

Some have questioned the viability of tunnel construction in South Florida given the geotechnical dynamics here. But Hodgkins said the Miami tunnel was built through a limestone base similar to that in Fort Lauderdale and that they compensated for its porous nature by inserting polymer into gaps to shore it up.

He also addressed the issue of construction vibrations, agreeing with BDO that the tunneling technology avoids that. He said it was important to his project to avoid vibration so as to both protect structures like the Children’s Museum and not disturb the animals at Jungle Island.

Let’s hope that this progress continues and that we all can agree on a tunnel. We need to protect our vibrant downtown and our historic district and that we do not further divide communities as the train tracks long have.

Yours,

|

Chady Vacation Rentals Does It All

Each year, more and more people are deciding to increase their income by renting out a property they own but do not use full time. In 2021, there were a reported 2.25 million Airbnb listings in the United States. Taking it a step further, some people even decide to purchase a home with the sole purpose of turning it into a vacation rental. While these entrepreneurial ventures seem romantic at first, they leave unanswered the question of who is going to run the day-to-day business. Well, look no further. Chady Vacation Rentals, a Nashville, Tennessee based company owned and operated by married partners Brady O’Rourke and Chase Leatherwood can take care of every detail from listing and renting your property to the daily maintenance and upkeep so that you can sit back, relax and sip a margarita on the beach.

In 2018, Chase and Brady, in need of extra cash, decided to rent a room in their home. While it wasn’t the ideal situation, they found out they were good at attending to their renters’ expectations, hotel quality sheets, toiletries, and coffee in the morning. Through word of mouth, they began managing a few more properties and their listings grew from one to fifteen. Then Covid came along and they were back to square one. Fortunately, however, the business rebounded and as of today, they now manage almost 100 luxury vacation rentals in Tennessee, Florida and Georgia. “Staying in one of our properties is an experience. We make sure the guests have a stress-

free vacation, Beautyrest mattresses, fluffy towels, down pillows, shampoo and coffee. If you engage us to manage your property, we take care of everything.”—Brady O’Rourke, Owner.

For their top-of-the-line services, Chady Vacation Rentals charges a modest management fee of 20%. For $500 they will set you up with everything needed to get your vacation rental ready for the market, permits, coordination with the fire department, creating a guest welcome book and professional photography to show off your property to the max. With 24-hour customer service reps that your guests can call for anything from turning the television set on to dishwasher repair, you never have to be bothered. Or worry. As for marketing your property, they make sure it is prominently listed across all the major platforms, Misterb&b, Airbnb, VRBO, Trip Advisor, Google Vacation Rentals and Expedia. Now’s the time to turn that old family home into an income producing property that will work for you.

Mr. Eagle 2024 Already At Work

It was a moment of triumph and reward for Steven Crespo. The triumph: being named Mr. Eagle 2024. The reward: the feeling of knowing he has the love and support of his peers.

Crespo’s reign is just getting started and he’s making the most of every day. He talked with OutClique at the Florida AIDS Walk & Music Festival in March. “This is my first fundraising event since the title. It’s going well.” At the time he was planning an event for April, so check for details at EagleBarWM.com.

The levels of pride and joy were palpable that night. When asked to relive the moment he was announced as the new titleholder, Crespo says “It was amazing. The judges saw in me someone who has passion and is driven. I will accomplish my goals.”

A Chili Reception

Mr. Eagle is bringing a foodie fave to Eagle. April 7, 2024, he’s hosting a chili cookoff at the bar. “We need people to bring chili to be judged. There are prizes.” Then, Crespo says, comes the best part. “We eat.”

But next month is the biggest month. Crespo heads up to Chicago to compete in International Mr. Leather (IML). He’ll hold a fundraiser to cover costs associated with the travel and competition. “I’m also working on a couple of projects for after IML,” he said.

Crespo won’t be doing this on his own. His brothers in leather will be there with him selling raffle tickets, getting auction items, or whatever Crespo chooses to do.

Often overlooked by people outside the leather

community, is the sense of brotherhood. Many only see hot guys in leather outfits, and possibly smoking a fat cigar. But look a little deeper, and there is much more to it.

“Absolutely. We’ll all be together,” he said. When it was suggested he has a long year ahead of him, Mr. Eagle said it was just the opposite. “I’m sure it will go pretty fast.”

(Re)Mixing It Up with DJ Hector Fonseca

Rio, LA, New York, Aspen, Ibiza, Las Vegas. Superstar DJ Hector Fonseca gets around. In his own estimation, he’s racked up almost two million miles on American Airlines over his 20-year career. He’s the king of remixes, partnering with Lady Gaga, Rhianna, Beyonce, and many other major artists for official Billboard #1 remixes. When Hector’s spinning it’s certain to be a wild night, just ask anyone who’s experienced his sounds at The Eagle in New York where he is a resident DJ. I spoke with Hector the day before his gig at The Eagle in Wilton Manors and found out why people travel miles to party wherever he spins.

Charles Baran: Is this your first time at The Eagle in Wilton Manors?

Hector Fonseca: No, this will be my fourth time back. It’s always a great crowd.

Charles Baran: Tech, tribal, vocal house. You blend them all. Do you prepare in advance for each gig?

Hector Fonseca: Fifty percent of my set are things I’m releasing on my label, Audio4Play. The other fifty percent are remixes I’ve done or remixes live.

Charles Baran: Tell me about your label.

Hector Fonseca: I started it in 2013 with the late, great DJ Theresa to showcase underrepresented LGBTQ artists and DJs. We had great success for years with several artists, like VIZIN, a fantastic drag artist.

Charles Baran: Was music always a part of your life?

Hector Fonseca: I grew up with music. My parents had parties in our house in Clifton, New Jersey. We would listen to Tito Puente, El Gran Combo, Donna Summer, Abba, Michael Jackson. That became my foundation.

Charles Baran: When did you become a DJ?

Hector Fonseca: Twenty-five years ago, when I was a model, I asked a DJ friend if he could show me how to mix. After he taught me, he said I was a natural, and a new career was born. Shortly afterwards, I got my first big gig at the Limelight.

Charles Baran: Who are your inspirations?

Hector Fonseca: Peter Rauhofer and Junior Vasquez really inspired me.

Charles Baran: Is there an artist you love collaborating with?

Hector Fonseca: Natasha Bessez. She is amazing and has been on Eurovision and The Voice. I also love Brazilian DJ Thiago Dukky. And last year I produced Laverne Cox’s album, Summertime: A TripHopera. It’s a new mix of Pop, Hip Hop and House with Operatic vocals by Laverne.

Charles Baran: What’s coming up next?

Hector Fonseca: I’m playing Tampa Pride on March 23, 2024. Then, Los Angeles and Palm Springs for gigs.

Charles Baran: Where can we hear your sets?

Hector Fonseca: My Audio4Play channel on YouTube and SoundCloud. I put it out there for everyone because that’s what it’s all about. Bringing joy through music and lifting people up!

Change is Gonna Come

Change. It is the least favorite word for a lot of people. I even struggle at times with drastic and quick change. I feel though, change that is incremental and planned can be a good thing. I recant, all forms of change can be a good thing. We just have to look for the good in it.

Wilton Manors is not unlike so many cities experiencing a boom, especially in the ways of entertainment, restaurants, bars, and the need for housing and hotel(s). Our Facebook forums often provide a space for many people, local year-round and seasonal, to voice their strong support or opposition to some of these changes.

The addition of restaurants like Myth Gastro Bar and the transition of power from Hamburger Mary’s to The Well allowed room for people to try something new, but also reaffirm their patronage to places they love and frequent like Bubbles and Pearls or Apt 9f (a personal favorite of mine). There are always complaints about more and more bars on these social media forums, but they have had a positive impact on places like the aforementioned Myth Gastro Bar. Recently, they came out with an entire line of mocktails just for the sober population because they saw all of the complaints about “drinks and lack of awareness for the sober population!” The addition of a new bar/restaurant had a positive impact on all communities involved because it created a conversation.

Here is what I say to you darlins’. Some of the best advice I ever received was the following. “There can be no comfort in a change zone, and no change in a comfort zone.” Change is inevitable. It is impossible to exist wholly today by the standards and ways of yesterday. The errors we have made in the past are lessons, not a sentence. Do yourself a favor and be a part of the conversation. If you’re not at the table, you are on the menu.

Financial Options in Challenging Times

While it is always smart to keep costs low and use options to maximize financial returns, in times of inflation it becomes even more important.

Let’s discuss a few ideas that might help your money go further.

Reduce or Eliminate Interest Fees: According to Motley Fool, the average American pays $1,627 per year in credit card interest and that figure is continuing to increase. Fortunately, credit card companies continue to offer teaser rates with 0% interest for balance transfers. There is usually a fee for the transfer, but since you will be able to pay off the debt without incurring additional interest, the fee is easily offset. Motley Fool provides guidance to help you explore options: https://shorturl. at/dsxJ1

Bank Fees: Bank fees are another expense that adds up quickly. If you are paying a monthly fee, ATM fees or significant overdraft fees, you should compare options and find a good bank or credit union that delivers the services you need in the most cost-effective manner. Bankrate shares good tips and information to help you make an informed decision. https://www.bankrate.com/ banking/checking/checking-account-survey/#overdraftfees

Reduce Subscriptions and Monthly Fees: Over time we add on new services whether it is streaming music, videos/TV or monthly products. Look over your

bills and decide whether you really use or need each service. If you have both Netflix and Amazon Video, perhaps you should choose one and cancel the other. Rocket Money is a new service that is available at a fee, to help consumers manage subscriptions. They will also negotiate fees on your behalf. If they successfully reduce a subscription, they usually charge you 50% of the savings while you have your fee reduced by 50%.

Put your Money to Work: If you have money in your checking or saving account, maximize the interest you earn. The recent increases in interest rates by the Federal Reserve make borrowing more expensive, but the flip side is that financial institutions can pay customers a higher interest on funds put into their financial institution. Again, compare options to find a quality bank or credit union paying a good rate on the funds you deposit. Bankrate.com has detailed information about some of the options to consider with assisting you in your research.

Don’t Waste your Money: Every day consumers file complaints with BBB when they have been outright scammed or when they end up paying more in time and money due to working with a bad business. Use the resources at www.BBB.org to find quality businesses providing good services and products. Nothing is worse than having to pay twice to have a job done.

There are great resources available to assist consumers and doing a little research and having financial discipline will help you through the months ahead.

Mr. Ramrod Advocates for Mental Health

“It’s okay to ask for help.” Publicizing this simple but powerful message is the goal of Will Howard, Mr. Ramrod 2024. Howard hopes to use his recognition in bringing mental health awareness to the LGBTQIA+ community. “Help is just a phone call away.”

The LGBTQIA+ population is 2.5 times more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression than hetero counterparts. Within the LGBTQIA+ population, 3060% deal with anxiety and depression during their lives. Not being accepted by family, internal homophobia, ostracization from gender-conforming counterparts, and abuse are a few of many factors that may contribute to mental health struggles.

Howard has created and is photographed in a series of public service announcements found in several local establishments. Stress, anxiety, depression, vulnerability, and sadness are a few key words to grab attention. Following the taglines, “There is a solutionour community cares” and “it’s okay to ask for help” are the numbers to receive mental health support. Call 988 or text 741741 for immediate assistance. Howard’s campaign has already reached Austin, Chicago, and Dallas with the goal of being in all leather clubs within the U.S. Howard’s passion in this mental health crusade is “to give everyone the opportunity to be your best. Mental health is a treatable disease; we’ll help you.”

Local organizations specializing in LGBTQIA+ mental health programs include SunServe and Broward House. SunServe offers an innovative Journaling Program

which teaches coping skills by working with a counselor and being an active recovery participant through writing. Broward House provides individualized care to meet needs through your own lifestyle. Other nonprofit organizations serving the LGBTQIA+ community are Care Resource and AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHS). Mental health services at Holy Cross Hospital, Midland Medical, and Memorial Healthcare can be provided through personal insurance.

For immediate support call 988 or text 741741. Further information may be found at Sunserve.org, Browardhouse.org, careresource.org, and ahf.org. Howard’s advice is to “take action to better yourself by using available resources. Everyone is loved.”

Mental Health, Well-being, and Ending the Stigma A Mission for Equity and Inclusion

As the CEO of NAMI Broward County, the imperative to champion mental health and well-being within our community has never been more crucial. The dialogue around mental health has significantly evolved, yet the journey towards fully destigmatizing mental health issues and ensuring equitable access to mental health services is ongoing. Recent literature and reports, including those from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), underscore the complex interplay between mental health, racial justice, and equity, highlighting the need for a concerted effort to address these intertwined issues.

In a landmark study published in the American Journal of Public Health, researchers found that stigma associated with mental health conditions disproportionately affects marginalized communities, exacerbating disparities in access to care and outcomes (Smith et al., 2020). This finding echoes NAMI's call for addressing mental health with a lens of racial justice and equity, emphasizing the necessity of culturally competent care and the dismantling of systemic barriers that impede access to mental health services for racial and ethnic minorities, and the LGBTQ+ community.

The urgency of integrating mental health, racial justice, and equity into our community strategies cannot be overstated. NAMI Broward County is committed to this integration, recognizing that mental well-being is inextricably linked with social determinants of health, including economic stability, education access, and social inclusivity. Our approach is rooted in the understanding that mental health care must be accessible and relevant to all, particularly to those historically underserved or marginalized.

NAMI Broward County is enhancing our initiatives aimed at reducing disparities in mental health care. This includes investment in training for mental health professionals

on issues of cultural competency and bias, as well as partnerships with community organizations to ensure that services are tailored to meet the diverse needs of our population. We are also focused on expanding mental health education and literacy efforts, targeting communities that may face higher barriers to accessing care or have been traditionally stigmatized.

A key aspect of our mission is to amplify the voices and experiences of those from marginalized communities in shaping mental health policies and programs. Engagement with community leaders, advocacy groups, and individuals with lived experience is critical to ensuring our efforts are informed and effective. NAMI Broward County's emphasis on the importance of lived experience in understanding and combating mental health disparities guides our approach to community engagement and policy development.

The journey towards mental health equity and the elimination of stigma is complex and challenging, but it is also filled with hope and possibility. Through collective action, informed by evidence-based practices and the lived experiences of our community members, we can make significant strides towards a more inclusive, supportive, and healthy society. Let us embrace this challenge with determination and compassion, knowing that together, we can create lasting change for the betterment of all in Broward County.

In our quest to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health, our 3rd Annual Artful Minds event is taking place on Saturday, June 1st, at MAD Arts. This event is dedicated to igniting conversations surrounding mental health and wellness, and inspiring hope through art. To purchase tickets, visit https://namibroward.org/artful-minds/. Dr. Ferdinand Cabrera, a pioneer in age management medicine, is leading this charge whose expertise has made significant strides in medical aesthetic treatments. In this insightful interview, Dr. Cabrera sheds light on cutting-edge treatments transforming the landscape of cosmetic medicine.

Baxter Martin: Dr. Cabrera, Genesis is renowned for its non-invasive aesthetic treatments. What excites you about these advancements?

Dr. Cabrera: The beauty of non-invasive treatments lies in their ability to offer significant improvements with minimal risk and downtime. Our goal is to make cosmetic enhancement accessible, safe, and tailored to meet the unique needs of our patients. With the latest technologies, we can achieve remarkable results that were once only possible through surgery.

Baxter Martin: Could you highlight some of the leading treatments at Genesis Health Institute?

Dr. Cabrera: Certainly. SculpSure is a prime example, utilizing laser technology to target and eliminate fat cells, offering a non-surgical option for body contouring. Accufit is another innovative treatment; it uses electrical muscle

stimulation to build muscle tone and strength, effectively sculpting the body. Lastly, RF Microneedling stands out for skin tightening and rejuvenation, combining microneedling with radiofrequency energy to stimulate collagen production, resulting in tighter, smoother skin.

Baxter Martin: How do these treatments cater to individual patients’ needs?

Dr. Cabrera: Personalization is crucial. We begin with a detailed consultation to understand the patient’s aesthetic goals and concerns. Then, we design a bespoke treatment plan, sometimes combining different technologies to achieve optimal results. Our approach is holistic, aiming to improve physical appearance and enhance self-confidence and well-being.

Baxter Martin: What future developments do you anticipate in non-invasive aesthetic treatments?

Dr. Cabrera: The future holds great promise, with ongoing research and technological advancements paving the way for even more effective and efficient treatments. Beyond the 5K Walk

Last month, under a postcard-worthy blue sky, hundreds marched along Fort Lauderdale beach for the annual 5K Florida AIDS Walk.

Latinos Salud brought the biggest team—and the loudest cheers—to the Walk. Today, the tents are packed up; the Walk is over. But the fundraising continues . . . just through the end of this month.

The annual fundraising season is a critical support for Latinos Salud. The non-profit is laser-focused on serving the community, by creating more welcoming and supportive spaces, adding more free services to meet community needs, and staging engaging events not just for gay Latinos, but for the entire South Florida LGBTQ community.

Last month, OutClique Magazine previewed the agency’s massively upgraded location in SW Miami. Bright, spacious, and convenient, the Bird Road location has the capacity to meet the community’s needs far better than Latinos Salud’s prior, small rental ever could.

This month, the agency brought on another Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, to keep up with the increasing number of clients seeking PrEP, STD treatment, HIV care and other health services in their Miami Beach location. Also, this month Latinos Salud added two more test counseling rooms to its Wilton Manors location. These are significant investments in our community’s health.

The Florida AIDS Walk fundraiser matches every dollar donated to Latinos Salud’s team, through April 30, 2024. So far, the agency has raised $375,000, toward a stretch goal of $500,000.

In these final few weeks, an “angel donor” has stepped up offering to match any donations made to Latinos Salud, and then the Florida AIDS Walk will match again, meaning that a $100 donation will become $400, and a $1,000 donation becomes $4,000. Latinos Salud’s co-founder Rafaelé Narváez said, “Think of how many people you are helping with this leveraged giving.”

54 | OutClique.com

Dr. Stephen Fallon, Latinos Salud’s Executive Director, said that now is the best time to support the agency. He asked, “If you’ve never supported Latinos Salud, could you make this the year? Give the amount you’d spend on a lunch out, or on an evening of dinner and drinks. You’ll find that your generosity is even more fulfilling, and you’ll know that your impact matters, with the double match.”

Holy Cross Health Awarded on Newsweek’s America’s Best-In-State Hospitals 2024 List

Holy Cross Health has been awarded on Newsweek’s list of America’s Best-In-State Hospitals 2024. This prestigious award is presented by Newsweek and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider. The awards list can be viewed on Newsweek’s website.

Proximity and access are of the utmost importance when choosing between top hospitals. The America’s Best-InState Hospitals 2024 ranking was created to identify the top hospitals at the state level. Hospitals from all U.S. states were eligible for the ranking and included in the nationwide survey. The 25 states with the most hospitals according to the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) were surveyed individually. The remaining states were grouped into 4 regions: Northeast, Midwest, West and South. Leading hospitals from these states were considered accordingly. Four data sources were used for the evaluation:

• Nationwide online survey: Over 10,000 medical professionals (doctors, hospital managers and healthcare workers) were asked to recommend the best hospitals (in and out of state) based on their expertise.

• Quality Metrics Data: Data from Medicare and Medicare Services available for Mortality, Safety, Readmission, Experience and Timely & Effective Care was considered.

• Patient Experience: Cleanliness of the hospitals and quietness, communication of the nurses/doctors and staff responsiveness, care transition, medicine communication and discharge information.

• PROMS Implementation survey: To account for the increasing importance of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs).

“Holy Cross Health is ecstatic to be recognized on Newsweek’s list of America’s Best-In-State Hospitals 2024,” said Mark Doyle, President and CEO of Holy Cross Health.

Care Resource Receives $50,000 from Advance Auto Parts Foundation to Deliver Healthcare Services to Under-Resourced Communities in Broward County

Care Resource has launched a new mobile health unit, made possible by a generous $50,000 donation from the Advance Auto Parts Foundation. Their financial contribution was further matched by a Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) H8F grant to complete the purchase and customization of the unit.

This mobile health unit marks a significant advancement in the health center’s mission to expand access to services in under-resourced communities throughout South Florida.

“Every person deserves the opportunity for a full, healthy life, which is why community health is a key pillar for our Advance Auto Parts Foundation. Together, with Care Resource, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and families, ensuring that no one is left behind in accessing the vital healthcare they deserve,” said Elisabeth Eisleben, President, Advance Auto Parts Foundation.

There are one-hundred and twenty-three census tracts in Broward County that are designated as medically underserved. By traveling throughout these regions, Care Resource aims to improve the health of underresourced residents. The mobile health program eliminates barriers to healthcare such as geography, transportation, mobility, language, and lack of insurance. The health center is committed to providing essential health care regardless of age, gender, immigration

status, religious beliefs, insurance, and financial status.

“With our new mobile health unit, we can now reach at least 2,000 more people annually in underserved areas of Broward County. Many individuals remain unaware of their health status regarding HIV, sexually transmitted infections, hepatitis C, or cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, access to immunization and health education is limited. This contribution will help bridge these gaps and create a healthier, more informed community.” said Ron Ledain, Director of Marketing, Health Promotion, and Linkage at Care Resource.

In appreciation of their financial support, Care Resource presented the Advance Auto Parts Foundation with their Community Appreciation Award and recognized them as a new member of the health center’s Keystone Society.

By expanding health care services through mobile health units, Care Resource can further provide communities with the right care, at the right time, in the right place.

About Care Resource:

Care Resource is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization and a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with four locations in Midtown Miami, Little Havana, Miami Beach, and Fort Lauderdale. The health center provides comprehensive health and support services to address the full healthcare needs of South Florida’s pediatric, adolescent, and adult populations.

AHF Nurses Lead the Way for HIV Care in Ukraine

The AHF Ukraine team has shown steadfast resiliency in the face of war for more than two years, which would not have been possible without its dedicated nurses. Not only has the program been sustained, it has grown to serve more than 77,000 registered clients – a more than 30% increase since the war began in Feb. 2022.

"Our role is to be there for our patients every step of the way, providing not just medical assistance but also emotional support,” said Svitlana Radchenko, a nurse on the AHF Ukraine team. “Through effective communication and empathy, we strive to uphold the highest standards of care, addressing the unique concerns and requirements of each individual under our care.”

Nurses at the team's Odesa Test & Treat Clinic are pivotal in collaborative decision-making and patient care for HIV. Breaking free from traditional roles, this model embraces people-centered care, empowering nurses to provide holistic and efficient health services.

Island City Stage, Gablestage, and Brévo Theatre Receive $250,000 Warten Foundation Grant to Produce Pulitzer Prize-Winning “Fat Ham” Play in South Florida

Island City Stage in Wilton Manors, GableStage in Coral Gables and Brévo Theatre in Pompano Beach have been awarded a $250,000 grant from the Warten Foundation to produce Fat Ham , the 2022 Pulitzer Prize-winning play by James ljames, in South Florida. This significant announcement marks a first-time collaboration among three leading theater groups in Broward and Miami-Dade counties, an innovative foundation partnership, as well as a South Florida premiere for this imaginative, witty interpretation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet that tackles identity, race and generational family issues.

The Warten Foundation grant is earmarked to ensure

the theaters have the resources to both fully realize, cast, and mount the production in two theaters, and also recruit new audiences for all three companies.

“The Warten Foundation is pleased to fund this historic collaboration that offers a rare opportunity for three highly lauded theater groups to authentically address their respective missions and use the unique powers of live theater to continue the discussion regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion within the context of a brilliant and funny theatrical production,” said Clifford J. Cideko, chairman of the Warten Foundation.

“Collectively, our three companies are thrilled that

88 | OutClique.com

the Warten Foundation has made this significant commitment,” said Martin Childers, managing director of Island City Stage. “By joining our creative forces and unique strengths, we can create a more accomplished and impactful production than each of us could have working individually.”

T.M. Pride, producing artistic director for Brévo Theatre who will also direct this South Florida production, elaborated, “Theatre is all about celebrating humanity and the power of storytelling. Fat Ham is an opportunity to celebrate black culture within a classical framework. It’s an honor to direct James Ijames’ reimagining of this classic tale and bring it to the vibrant communities throughout South Florida.”

Fat Ham transforms Shakespeare’s Hamlet into an over-the-top tale set in a North Carolina BBQ pit. With a twist, the Danish castle becomes a Southern backyard barbecue, and Juicy, a Black, gay southern

kid, navigates familial legacies and a ghostly demand for vengeance. The clash of generations unfolds in this award-winning adaptation, exploring the complexities of identity and violence. Jesse Green, theater critic for The New York Times wrote, “That Fat Ham achieves its happy, even joyful, ending honestly, without denying the weight of forces that make Hamlet feel just as honest, is a sign of how capacious and original the writing is, growing the skin of its own necessity instead of merely burrowing into Shakespeare’s.”

Fat Ham will premiere as part of all three companies’ 2024-25 seasons. The play will begin its initial run at Island City Stage in May 2025 and will move to GableStage, directly thereafter. Additional details, casting and production design team will be announced later in the year. The theaters will each individually announce their 2024-25 full season of plays, programs and pricing in the coming weeks.

Garden Plaza at Equality Park Invites Conversation, Commemoration, and Canines

For someone who prides himself on his gardening skills, creating a colorful yet calming garden at the Pride Center was something Chuck Nicholls was certain he needed to see to fruition.

“I love growing plants from seed. I love growing them from vegetative cuttings and it’s just part of my DNA to be out there gardening,” Nicholls said. “There is no better way for me to relax than to be outdoors.”

He hopes that guests to the Chuck Nicholls and Mark Turner Garden Plaza at Equality Park will share his sense of relaxation when they visit. Nicholls, who frequents the garden with his boxer Ava, said that the garden is full of orchids, hybrid plants, and non-native bromeliads.

“It really is a very peaceful place for people to sit down and to talk and have a conversation in the shade of the garden,” he said.

90 | OutClique.com

Nicholls has long been active in the local garden community, founding the Equity Garden Club in 2010 and serving as its president for over five years. He also co-founded The Tropical Plant Fair held every November at Richardson Park and Preserve in Wilton Manors. His idea for the Garden Plaza started about 15 years ago as a possible memorial garden at the Pride Center, which has served the local community for nearly 30 years providing a space that celebrates, nurtures and empowers LGBTQ+ communities in South Florida.

“I kept thinking, ‘how can I make this work financially and through innovative financing?’ and with the help of the American Health Foundation, the garden was completed and dedicated in February of 2023,” Nicholls said.

The outdoor space also features large marble and jade boulders that he handpicked in Italy. With a flat surface designed to serve as seating areas, the stones facilitate leisurely conversations in the garden.

“They are huge. I mean, no one could walk away with them,” he joked. “This garden is made for relaxing and

having fun, and so all the marble boulders are for sitting. The jade boulders are not configured this way. They are more upright. But the beautiful thing is that the Pride Center uses the boulders for naming rights.”

The first stone, Nicholls said, was dedicated to one of his favorite charities, Tuesday’s Angels, which started in response to the needs of those living with HIV and AIDS in Broward County. In addition to naming the boulders, people can also honor a loved one or commemorate a special event with a memorial brick in the garden.

Nicholls knows well the therapeutic effects of time spent in a garden, so he is developing a trust to enable the Pride Center to maintain the space long after he’s gone.

“Being out in the garden just for an hour a day really helps the stress level,” he said.

The garden is also dog friendly. Visitors are welcome to bring their pups—and join Nicholls and Ava on their garden strolls. Author:

Making Harmonious Music With Chuck Stanley

In 1976, retiring Fort Lauderdale high school music teacher Peggy Joyce Barber had a dream—to start an organization that would keep choral music alive in Broward County for years to come. Thanks to a sponsorship with NOVA Southeastern University, Peggy’s dream came true and for forty-eight years the NOVA Singers have been delighting Broward and Palm Beach County music lovers with three concert series per year. In 2010, Ms. Barber passed her conductor’s baton to Chuck Stanley, who continues to guide the group forward. I spoke to Chuck about this musical treasure of the South Florida arts and entertainment scene.

Charles Baran: When did you first join the NOVA Singers?

Chuck Stanley: I joined the group in 1976. So, you could say I’m an original member.

Charles Baran: Are you the only original member still in the group?

Chuck Stanley: There are two of us. But many of the members have been with us for 25 to 30 years.

Charles Baran: Tell us about your concerts.

Chuck Stanley: We do three concert series per year. Each concert has three performances. The December concert is half classical holiday music and half contemporary holiday. Then in March we do a major classical piece. This year we are doing Dan Forrest’s Jubilate Deo, a magnificent piece that we first did in 2017. It’s based on Psalm 100, “Oh, be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands,” and has seven movements, each sung in a different language: English, Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic, Liturgical Latin, Mandarin Chinese, and

Zulu. The May program we keep a bit lighter with spirituals, early Americana and patriotic songs. Tickets are available on the NOVA Singers website www.nova.edu/novasingers.

Charles Baran: How many singers are currently in the group?

Chuck Stanley: We currently have 105 and they range in age from a recently joined high school student to several people in their nineties.

Charles Baran: Do you actively seek new members?

Chuck Stanley: Yes, we hold auditions three times a year. Anyone wishing to audition can email me at novasingers@ nova.edu.

Charles Baran: Does the group perform outside of South Florida?

Chuck Stanley: Yes. We’ve performed at Carnegie Hall three times and also at the National Cathedral in Washington DC. In 1988, we went to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. In 2006 we sang at the Vatican and performed in and around Rome. Then in 2016 we traveled to Budapest, Vienna and Prague. We are planning a tour for our upcoming 50th Anniversary Season and we might just do the Baltics.

Charles Baran: What is something you’d like to share about the NOVA Singers?

Chuck Stanley: We are more than a choir; we are a group of people that care deeply about each other and it shows every minute we are together.

The 41st edition of Miami Dade College’s Miami Film Festival returns April 5-14, 2024. The Festival showcases the work of the world’s best emerging and established filmmakers’ international and Ibero-American films, and serves as a major launchpad for many local filmmakers, as well as international and documentary cinema. Festival-goers can expect one of MFF’s biggest programs in years with over 165 feature narratives, documentaries, and short films of all genres from more than 31 countries worldwide.

The Festival will open with Thelma, directed by Josh Margolin, and the closing night film will be Ezra, directed by Tony Goldwyn from the ABC hit show Scandal and the beloved film Ghost. Goldwyn will be in attendance at MFF.

2024 Festival Milestones:

● New Leadership: Welcoming James Woolley as the new festival executive director.

● Celebrities love the Miami Film Festival: Since its inception four decades ago, some of the biggest stars and filmmakers in the world have graced the Festival’s red carpets. Several stars to expect include Adria Arjona, Heather Graham, Bryan Greenberg, Jeremy Piven, and Alison Brie, with others being confirmed.

● Local and MDC Connections: A record number of films with ties to Miami and Miami Dade College.

● Expanded Shorts Program: Doubling the shorts program to showcase 24 diverse shorts by local and upcoming filmmakers, competing for the Made in MIA Short Film Award.

● Groundbreaking Experiences: The Miami Film Festival is poised to captivate audiences with an array of groundbreaking experiences that push the boundaries of traditional film viewing and celebrate the diversity of cinematic storytelling. For example:

○ “32 Sounds” (Florida Premiere): This Oscar shortlisted immersive documentary by filmmaker Sam Green offers festival-goers a profound exploration of sound. Screened at the Perez Art Museum with support of Live Arts Miami, participants wear headphones and enjoy a sensory journey through

the elemental phenomenon of sound, highlighting the festival's commitment to innovative and engaging cinematic experiences.

○ “Suze” (Florida Premiere): Enjoy dinner and a (free) movie at the Mayfair House Hotel & Garden in Coconut Grove as part of a special Miami Film Festival experience on April 10. The featured film will be “Suze” about an empty-nest mother who gets stuck with taking care of her daughter’s heartbroken ex-boyfriend when the daughter goes to university.

○ “Dear Jassi” (India, directed by Tarsem Singh), follows the story of a young couple who desperately want to be together, but are separated due to time, distance, and societal expectations. Directly following the Florida Premiere screening of “Dear Jassi,” the festival will host a 35mm retrospective screening of Singh’s 2000 film The Cell, copresented by Popcorn Frights.

○ “Lady Like” (North American Premiere): This year, the Miami Film Festival proudly presents the North American premiere of "Lady Like," a compelling film about the journey of Lady Camden, a London-born, San Francisco-based drag queen, from "RuPaul's Drag Race" fame to confronting her traumatic past. The premiere at the Miami Beach Bandshell, a new venue for the festival, includes a Q&A, aligning with Miami Beach Pride Week for a celebration of drag culture.

Slow Burn Theatre Company Asks You to The Prom

Slow Burn Theatre Company presents The Prom, winner of The Drama Desk Award for Best New Musical, from Saturday, March 23 through Sunday, April 7, 2024, in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center.

Four eccentric Broadway stars are in desperate need of a new stage. So when they hear that trouble is brewing around a small-town prom, they know that it’s time to put a spotlight on the issue . . . and themselves. The town’s parents want to keep the high school dance on the straight and narrow—but when one student just wants to bring her girlfriend to prom, the entire town has a date with destiny. On a mission to transform lives, Broadway’s brassiest join forces with a courageous girl and the town’s citizens and the result is love that brings them all together.

The Prom expertly captures all the humor and heart of a

classic musical comedy with a message that resonates with audiences now more than ever. Variety raved, “It’s so full of happiness that you think your heart is about to burst.”

The Prom features a book by Tony® Award winner Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone) and Tony Award nominee Chad Beguelin (Aladdin), music by Tony® Award nominee Matthew Sklar (Elf) and lyrics by Tony® Award nominee Chad Beguelin.

Performance times vary with an open captioned performance generously underwritten by the Amaturo Family Foundation on Sunday, March 31 at 2 p.m. in which spoken dialogue scrolls across a digital screen as the action takes place on stage. This production is presented through special arrangement with Theatrical Rights Worldwide.

GMCSF is Thrice As Nice in April

For the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida (GMCSF), April is coming in like a lion and will go out like a lion as well. The chorus is drinking lots of hot tea and lemon to prepare for a trio of shows that embrace their range, their community, and horses.

April 6, 2024, will involve a lot of singing and a lot of horsing around. They’re starting the day in Wellington at the Lexus International Gay Polo Tournament. The chorus always likes to hit the road and take part in LGBTQIA+ events.

In keeping with their musical mission, the Polo matches benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation. “The guys are so engaged right now,” GMCSF Artistic Director Gabe Salazar told OutClique. “They’re just following every step that we do.”

Once the steeds are in the stables, chorus members will use their automotive horsepower to head back to Broward for the Davie Jazz Festival. The party starts at 6pm at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds.

Jazz is a very freeform genre, and may seem like an odd choice for such a precisely timed group like the GMCSF. But the ensemble loves the challenge and the opportunity to be part of an event that brings LGBTQIA+ and other communities together to make music magic.

While outstanding jazz is a feat unto itself, letting a room full of fans take control of the show is a risky proposition that comes with a high reward.

On April 20, 2024, GMCSF will do just that. That’s the date of their next community singalong at Hunters Nightclub at 3pm. The singalongs have quietly become a must-attend staple in Wilton Manors. Now fans loudly sing their praises.

“They’re really eager and ready for it,” Salazar said. “We’re hoping to make it bigger and excited to make it part of our community. We want to make it a really big event for the community in the future.”

The first one was less than a year ago and debuted to critical reviews from attendees and the chorus. Lovers of showtunes flock to the event and maybe even bring a few friends who may be skeptical about an event like the singalong. However, they all leave as converts to show tune fun.

The most recent was in February and a devoted contingent of fans quickly came in and filled up the dance floor in front of the stage.

Disney tunes, big screen hits, and more are on the set list. You can get tickets and more information at GMCSF.org.

The producers of Mrs. Doubtfire, the smash hit musical comedy currently playing to sold out houses in London’s West End, are thrilled to announce the full cast for the North American Tour coming to Fort Lauderdale on April 9 – 21, 2024.

The critically-acclaimed production features beloved, Tony-nominated Broadway leading man Rob McClure, reprising his “exhilarating, star-making performance” (The Telegraph) as Daniel Hillard/Euphegenia Doubtfire (everybody’s favorite Scottish nanny). McClure is joined by renowned actress and real-life wife, Maggie Lakis as Miranda Hillard.

Joining McClure and Lakis are Giselle Gutierrez as Lydia Hillard, Aaron Kaburick as Frank Hillard, Nik Alexander as Andre Mayem, Leo Roberts as Stuart Dunmire, Romelda Teron Benjamin as Wanda Sellner, Cody Braverman and Axel Bernard Rimmele as Christopher Hillard, and Emerson Mae Chan and Kennedy Pitney as Natalie Hillard.

The cast also includes David Hibbard, Jodi Kimura, Alex Branton, Jonathan Hoover, Sheila Jones, Julie Kavanagh, Ian Liberto, Marquez Linder, Alex Ringler, Bianca RiveraIrions, Lannie Rubio, Neil Starkenberg, Joey Stone, Gina Ward, Lauryn Withnell, and Julia Yameen.

Along with Rob McClure, Aaron Kaburick, David Hibbard, and Jodi Kimura were also members of the Broadway company.

The North American Tour follows the recent opening of Mrs. Doubtfire on the West End where it received numerous 4 Star reviews and was proclaimed “A complete joy” by the Daily Telegraph and “Blazingly comical, joyful and very funny” by the Daily Express

The Chicago Tribune declares Mrs. Doubtfire is “the lovable, big-hearted musical comedy Broadway needs right now” and the Hollywood Reporter calls this “a feelgood, family-friendly musical comedy that delivers.”

Out-of-work actor Daniel Hillard will do anything for his kids. After losing custody in a messy divorce, he creates the kindly alter ego of Scottish nanny Euphegenia Doubtfire in a desperate attempt to stay in their lives. As

his new character takes on a life of its own, Mrs. Doubtfire teaches Daniel more than he bargained for about how to be a father. A hysterical and heartfelt story about holding onto your loved ones against all odds, Mrs. Doubtfire is the musical comedy we need right now – one that proves we’re better together.

With direction by four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks, the new musical comedy features a book by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell and music and lyrics by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick, the Tony Award nominated team behind Something Rotten! The creative team is rounded out by Choreographer Lorin Latarro; Music Supervisor, Arranger and Orchestrator Ethan Popp; Scenic Designer David Korins; Costume Designer Catherine Zuber; Lighting Designer, Philip S. Rosenberg; Sound Design by Brian Ronan and Craig Cassidy; Hair & Wig Designer David Brian Brown; and Casting by The Telsey Office (Craig Burns, CSA).

Blaine Alden Krauss will take center stage at the Kravis Center in April playing the principal role in the national tour of the award-winning musical Hamilton. Although he spent years preparing for the role, he knows that he didn’t get there completely on his own.

“My whole life story is a product of ‘it takes a village’ and that stretches from my family to my teachers,” he said.

He also recognizes that he is lucky that everyone has been incredibly supportive over the years.

“In my family, my dad is kind of an artist. He just retired from the army, but he was a rapper. That’s funny to say,” he said. “But he was also a DJ and loves music and my family just loves culture in that way.”

Krauss, who started performing at McDonald Elementary School in Tampa Bay, credits a school guidance counselor as one of the people who helped him get involved in the arts when she approached his mom about a performing arts camp, she thought he should attend, even finding him a scholarship. Many people along the way, like his guidance counselor, did things out of their own hearts without ever being asked, he said.

Even with this strong support system, he said that he still experienced the many hills and valleys that come with a career in the arts. With Broadway credits including Kinky Boots and The Cher Show, Krauss does not take his professional opportunities for granted.

“It’s exciting to be doing this work professionally and to be doing it at this level with Hamiliton—it’s just crazy,” he said. “When I think about all the years I’ve put in and all the shows that have brought me to this moment, then it really magnetizes everything, And, you know, I find myself right now just kind of grinning ear to ear,” he said.

Krauss has viewed himself as an artist his entire life.

“Knowing that I wanted to do this since I was very young, I think that afforded me a lot of time to get really practical with what it meant to be an artist and what that would mean on my end,” he said.

Krauss said that his role as Hamilton is yet another blessing to count.

“I’ll always say that to be an artist and live an artist’s life is already a blessed life, but the financial part can get tricky,” he said. “So, to be able to be living my dream and make a really great income and not worry about that is a blessing above anything else.”

He acknowledges that his life is, as he calls it, an unconventional road.

For those looking to follow it, he advises, “Make sure that your passion, your love, and your joy are what’s leading you. And, if it is your love and your joy then pursue it relentlessly.”

Vintage Hollywood With a Sexy Side of Style and Sass Punctuate Pulp

Premiering in South Florida at Island City Stage

July 1956. A hot and humid Chicago. Enter Terry Logan, a tough-talking, rebellious seductive. When she takes up residence at The Well, a club run by women who love women, the trouble really begins. Take a nostalgic trip back to vintage Hollywood featuring femme fatales radiating sexy style with sass in Pulp by Patrica Kane (featuring music by Amy Warren & Andre Pluess and lyrics by Patricia Kane) making its South Florida premiere from April 11 – May 5 at Island City Stage.

"I have been excited about this production for a year. It's our first time working with Nicole Stodard, whose work I have admired for many years,” said Andy Rogow, artistic director of Island City Stage. “ Pulp is a show that appeals to such a broad audience as it's sexy, sultry and a little bit campy with some truly great nightclub-type songs. In addition, although we have featured lesbian themes in characters in many previous productions, this is the first production we have presented that has no male roles or actors."

In Pulp , audiences will be visually immersed in The Well, a teeming-with-sex women’s bar. The sultry Bing takes up with Logan, declaring her “the new butch in town.” But Logan doesn’t like labels. “I’m a lesbian plain and simple. I don’t make any bones about it,” she declares. And Logan soon yearns for Vivian, the mysterious, glamorous and seemingly untouchable owner of The

Well. Through wisecracks, classic deadpan deliveries and clever double-entendres set to a 1950s period score, Pulp will take audiences on a provocative and enjoyable journey of self-discovery and acceptance.

Patricia Kane is a Chicago-based actress and awardwinning playwright. In addition to PULP , she’s also penned Float, Seven Moves (adapted from the novel by Carol Anshaw) and Chords . Kane also is the recipient of the Trailblazer Award for her work in gay and lesbian theatre. As a long-time artistic associate at About Face Theatre, Pat has appeared in numerous productions there including What Once We Felt, Fascination, The Terrible Girls, Whitman, Dancer from the Dance and Cloud Nine . Other credits include productions with the Goodman Theatre, Northlight Theatre, Collaboraction, Live Bait, Stage Left, Bailiwick, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, and workshop productions with NYC’s Tectonic Theatre Group. She also has a recurring role on “Chicago Med.” Prior, she appeared in Victory Garden's critically acclaimed productions of The Whale, In the Next Room or the vibrator play and Hannah Free (as well as the film of the same name, starring Sharon Gless).

Pulp is directed by Nicole Stodard, Ph.D. and stars Autumn Kioti, Leah Sessa, Sandi Stock, Sheena O. Murray and Valeria Di Babbo.

City of Fort Lauderdale Partners with Citibot to Launch Ask FTL

The City is thrilled to announce the launch of its new customer service platform: Ask FTL. The new service for our neighbors includes an accessible web chat assistant on the City’s website and a text message feature. It was launched in partnership with Citibot, the leading provider of interactive chat solutions for local government.

Ask FTL empowers our residents by offering them swift access to answers, information on city services and easy submission of service requests. The platform automates and scales customer service efforts between staff and residents by using state-of-the-art AI-driven chatbot technology.

Both desktop and mobile users will notice the feature on the bottom right section of their browser window. Clicking on the icon launches a chat window, greeting residents and prompting them to enter their questions or service requests.

To start a conversation via text message, residents can text “Hello” to 866-938-9385. Ask FTL immediately responds with a short greeting explaining the various ways residents can use the service and a link to sign up for text message notifications.

“This is a testament to our dedication to providing the best customer service to our neighbors while utilizing the latest in technology. This AI-powered chatbot can be accessed from anywhere, anytime. We want to make it as easy as possible for people to get the information they need and this is a major step in that direction,” said City Manager Greg Chavarria.

Citibot LLC was formed in 2016 with the mission of making cities and counties accessible for all. Cofounder and CEO Bratton Riley was inspired by the evolution of the conversational chatbot and its ability to help governments be more accessible and accountable to every resident.

Sharing and Teaching is Part of the Cultural Arts Equation

In the world of cultural arts, sharing and teaching are just as important as the actual artwork itself. Often, the artist, the conduit and the teacher are three different people who converge to make an impact.

South Florida is filled with creative people, many of whom gather at ArtServe, where anyone can exhibit their unique work, share their talents and learn new techniques. With sponsorship by OutClique Magazine, Seacoast Bank, Broward Health and FPL, ArtServe is presenting the 2024 annual Impact Awards to showcase how everyday people inspire the world through creative arts.

“Our honorees this year have sparked great things by sharing, teaching, and giving others the space and tools to do the same,” ArtServe CEO Jason Hughes noted.

Let’s meet ArtServe’s Impact Award Honorees of 2024!

Passion and Insanity Are Close Cousins

When beloved puppeteer Jim Hammond applied to the City of Fort Lauderdale for a permit to hold the first-ever

“Day of the Dead” 15 years ago, they got a call from the Police Department the next day asking whether it was a protest, “ . . . or what?”

The event, a playful spectacle honoring the Mexican tradition in which skeleton-costumed revelers animate dozens of giant puppets, went on to become an annual Fort Lauderdale favorite, partially because Hammond created it with help from hundreds of volunteers who invested themselves through their related papiermâché classes at ArtServe.

There, six-year-olds sat next to 96-year-olds learning ancient artistic techniques from Hammond to create the giant parade puppets, along with processional puppeteer skills they needed to participate.

Fast forward to April 2023, when historic flooding demolished half of Hammond’s Day of the Dead puppets, a despairing Sun-Sentine l photograph of the damage led organizations like Riverwalk, South Florida Symphony, The Community Foundation of Broward and others to help them begin anew.

Jim Hammond Thaddeus Hamilton

Jessica Swanson

“When someone is given a puppet, they feel free to let a little of their true selves out,” Hammond said. “Puppets are metaphors for the masks we all wear in life. But really, we are all just puppeteers inside our own puppets.”

A National Hero Sat in a Restaurant Unrecognized

Every time he would meet his friend, Ret. Lt. Col. Leo Gray, for lunch or dinner, Thaddeus Hamilton felt indignant as people walked right past without recognizing Gray as a World War II hero and one of the original Tuskegee Airmen—the first-ever AfricanAmerican fighter pilots who paved the way for racial integration in America’s armed services.

After Gray’s passing in 2016, Hamilton, who followed in Gray’s Air Force footsteps and later again at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, vowed to make sure the world would remember Gray, along with all the Tuskegee Airmen now long passed.

To do it, as President of the Miami Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, he used his personal collection of Tuskegeerelated artwork, along with donated sculptures, books, model planes and photographs to educate and inspire people of all ages and demographics to learn about the Tuskegee Airmen’s legacy. During an outreach

event for the United Negro College Scholarship Fund Leadership Council at ArtServe, he met sculptor George Gadsden, who asked him to display his treasures there.

“Back in the 1930s, they said Black people didn’t have the mental capacity to fly an airplane and they turned out to be the best pilots in the entire war,” Hamilton recalled. “The Tuskegee Airmen were called upon to escort large bombers to ensure they completed their missions and returned safely. They never lost a bomber to an enemy fighter plane.”

“I Remove Barriers to Learning”

The numbers don’t lie. Something really great is happening at Dillard High School.

Magnet Coordinator for Emerging Technology and Digital Entrepreneurship, Jessica Swanson, is proud of her role in creating and maintaining the school’s successful array of arts and technology programs like ballet, jazz, artificial intelligence and robotics, so kids don’t have to attend private school to get access to specialized education—a growing imperative in the workplace.

Swanson, who supports Dillard’s digital arts program,

makes sure arts, business and technology teachers have what they need to both structure their lessons and obtain resources necessary for providing the kind of robust education that will help students succeed and sustain themselves into adulthood. She communicates with both universities and employers to ensure Dillard’s courses and student experiences are aligned with what they expect.

“All these things you don’t realize have anything to do with each other combine. That’s when greatness happens, Swanson added.

Importantly, she holds students to their own choices and commitments, inviting them to break down their own personal barriers as they navigate the structured real-world experiences that are part of her programs.

“That’s how we have so many girls achieving in STEM and computer science, for example,” she said. “If they’re worried they can’t achieve, we focus on getting them what they need to do it.”

Good Leaders Know Their Right Brain

As Leadership Broward Foundation CEO Andrew Zullo rattles off a long list of all the events, programs and partnerships for both students and adults the organization holds at The Our Fund Foundation Hall at ArtServe, one particularly important aspect of these events besides the great location emerges:

“I’m a firm believer that good leaders need to be quick on their feet,” Zullo explained. “Our classes always include a session on theatrical improvisation with ArtServe’s Ed Zeltner, because it’s important to learn

how to tap into our artistic-thinking right brain to do it.”

Leadership Broward Foundation, Broward County’s premier leadership development training organization, has a 42-year history of preparing and connecting leaders from the business and civic communities to strengthen Florida’s future.

“We couldn’t do our programming without ArtServe,” Zullo said. “It’s well-managed, affordable and intimate. Just right for us!”

“It’s Everything About Fort Lauderdale”

When Mark Budwig of S.Mark Graphics was asked to “keep an eye” on a then-rudimentary newsletter published by Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale in 2003, he never imagined that eight years later, he would take over as publisher and editor-in chief overseeing the nowglossy-style content, layout, printing and distribution of 12 annual issues, with more than 15,000 copies that are distributed to members and subscribers at 300 locations around the community.

“It’s everything about Fort Lauderdale,” Budwig said. “I’m proud that we’ve endured in this economy.”

With Genia Duncan Ellis at the helm as President and CEO, Riverwalk is a nonprofit organization responsible for the planning, programming, beautification and promotion of Riverwalk Park through a wide range of fundraising and membership events and advocacy. With its sumptuous photography, lively content and upto-the-minute events calendars, GoRiverwalk Magazine is the conduit for Fort Lauderdale’s thriving downtown, which includes the city’s arts communities.

David Maiocco

to Perform Liberace Tribute Concert at Sunshine Cathedral

Sunshine Cathedral Center for the Performing Arts is proud to present an upcoming Liberace tribute concert on April 27, 2024, performed by renowned impersonator David Maiocco.

A virtuoso pianist who trained classically at Boston and New England Conservatories of Music. Maiocco has been praised by critics nationwide for mastering the art of transforming into the greatest showman that we know and love as Liberace. From his signature smile and rings to the capes and feathers, Maiocco’s dedication to authenticity is uncanny.

In addition to touring the country as the musical legend, Maiocco has also appeared as Liberace on Broadway and in film projects such as Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead and Bruce Vilanch’s Keeping The Yuletide Gay: A Very Special Paul Lynde Christmas.

OutClique caught up with Maiocco ahead of his South Florida appearance to talk more about the show and what audiences can expect, as well as his favorite Liberace moments and how the superstar would be adapting today if he was still alive.

Denny Patterson: What can we expect from your Liberace tribute performance?

David Maiocco: Basically, I don't do Liberace as sort of a museum tribute piece, although I go to great lengths to do the best I can to look like him. My costumes are inspired by his originals, just on my budget, and I play a lot of his arrangements that I've lifted painstakingly to sound exactly like him. So, you get a lot of classic Liberace that you expect. After doing this for eight years, I’ve learned that it’s great that I do a slightly different take on the character, but people who know him don’t want you to leave anything out. It’s also a very interactive show. That was always my favorite part of watching Liberace, when he would talk to the audience. As much as it seemed off the cuff, most of it was scripted, and I don’t script anything. I literally take a chance and go into the audience. So, you’ll hear lots of Liberace classics and lots of things he never played before. It’s a fun evening paying tribute to this incredible guy, and I do a hybrid of my study and love of Liberace, but I also do him as if he was still alive at 104 years old.

Denny Patterson: That’s a perfect segue to my next question. If Liberace was still alive, do you think he would have adapted to today’s times?

David Maiocco: I think he would still be a superstar, but he’s your favorite grandpa trying to make his way through the Instagram and TikTok era. What’s different, and especially in terms of LGBTQ+, he could never come out. He won that libel lawsuit in 1965, and under oath, he said he wasn’t gay and was against all that stuff. In my act, I push it without being overt. None of us needed flashcards to know that Liberace was gay, but he would never have mentioned it. He would perjure himself if he ever came out, so he was legally bound by that fatal choice of saying he’s against homosexuality. However, if we took that away, I think he would be thriving today. When you think about Liberace's arrangements, he only wrote two songs in his entire life. Everything else was covering people's material, and that’s because he loved and embraced new talent. I believe he would still be doing that today. Of course, to him, everyone was new and emerging (laughs). But again, take away that lawsuit, I truly believe he could have had that Betty White power. He would have been in Super Bowl commercials and roles in all these different film and TV projects. He would be thriving.

Denny Patterson: Which musical arrangement of his is your absolute favorite to play?

David Maiocco: I suppose you’ve got to say what comes to mind first, so that would be “Tea for Two.” It’s very flourish-y, but within it, he interpolates the song “Nola,” he interpolates “Turkey in the Straw,” he interpolates “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes,” he puts a bunch of stuff into this fast two and a half minute version of “Tea for Two,” and it’s my absolute favorite to play because it’s just so silly.

Denny Patterson: What do you always hope audiences take away from your Liberace shows?

David Maiocco: I always hope that people who knew and loved him are grateful and enjoy revisiting the magic, charisma, and charm that he had with audiences. As for people who were never Liberace fans or didn't know who he was, which is a growing number of people, I hope they had a great time and thought the show was fun and wacky. I hope they are now interested in keeping his memory and magic alive. Those are my biggest hopes.

to Bring New Comedy Tour to Parker Playhouse

Two-time Emmy and Grammy Award-winning comedian

Kathy Griffin has cemented herself as a powerful figure in comedy thanks to her unfiltered, unapologetic, and utterly hilarious take on the rich and famous, but standup has also brought Griffin a lot of trouble. Most notably in 2017, the loveable entertainer received widespread backlash for a political stunt involving Donald Trump.

Best known for her hit Bravo reality series Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List and co-hosting CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live alongside Anderson Cooper, Griffin’s career came to a screeching halt and she lost everything, becoming one of the first casualties of cancel culture.

Griffin is now making a triumphant return, and she is stepping back onstage with a brand-new comedy tour titled My Life on the PTSD List, which will play at the Parker Playhouse on May 15, 2024.

OutClique had the opportunity to catch up with Griffin and talk more about the journey that inspired her latest stand-up venture, as well as how her comedy has changed since being blacklisted, buying back the rights to My Life on the D-List, and finding solace in the healing power of laughter.

Denny Patterson: Kathy, I’m so happy this tour is a new beginning for you! What can we expect from My Life on the PTSD List?

Kathy Griffin: First of all, I hope you love the title. I mean, it kind of writes itself. When I was diagnosed with PTSD, instead of being worried about my health or safety, I was immediately like, that's a funny tour title. Thank you, doctor! I can see it now in lights, and obviously, that's kind

of what the show is. I like poking fun at all the PTSD stuff because what I'm doing to feel better is embarrassing and laughable. Like, I get acupuncture, and I know it doesn't do a thing. And remember when Gwyneth Paltrow was all about cupping therapy? I did that, but it just looks like I got into a bar fight with Gwyneth and now I have all these scars on my back. I talk about all these things.

Denny Patterson: As a figure who has worked in entertainment for years, what do you always hope audiences take away from your live shows?

Kathy Griffin: I want them to laugh, think, and gasp a little bit. I say gasp because, this is obviously no secret, I do say stuff just for shock value. Sometimes to wake up the audience, and sometimes just to say that thing that you’re thinking but don’t want to say. That’s where I come in. Much to my detriment many times, but don't worry, I never learned my lesson, and I’m not going to start with this tour (laughs). Like I said, I make fun of everything. From my prescription pill addiction, for which I'm in recovery, to cancer. I mean, I have half a lung on my left side. You’ve got to laugh at the trauma.

Denny Patterson: And the title is a play on your Emmy Award-winning series My Life on the D-List, which you bought back the rights to last year. What made you do that?

Kathy Griffin: Because Peacock isn't showing it, and I don’t know why. I wish they would. I’m flattered that people enjoy the show, and it’s nostalgic. The 2000s are having a whole resurgence now, and that’s when the show was on for six years. I’m proud of it because it was very real. I don't know if anybody would let me do a show like that now, but I love that people are rediscovering it.

I've been putting clips of it on TikTok and YouTube, and people are remembering certain moments and things, especially my mom. They think of my mom tipping her box of wine in heaven, if she went there. The jury’s still out, but you know, I’ve been on a sitcom, I’ve done specials, and I even had an MTV show for a while, but My Life on the D-List truly changed things for me. It made people accept the super, super shocking side of my comedy, but it also showed them that I’m a freaking human being.

Denny Patterson: Yeah, I love how genuine and authentic the show is. How does it feel to know that it gave a lot of gay men the courage to come out?

Kathy Griffin: That's my favorite compliment. I have talked to so many gay men who said they shouldn't have been watching the show because they were nine or 10 or something, but it had many gay themes without saying gay, gay, gay, in your face. That’s just the way I am. I’m an ally in the community, and so many of those kids loved my mom and dad because they were also legit allies in the community without ever shouting it from the rafters. I've had so many people say it led to the first conversation with, usually a mom, about coming out, and I think that's such a great thing because it shows the power of comedy. I don't even take it as a personal compliment. It shows that not only is laughter medicine, but it can also build bridges.

Denny Patterson: Have you had thoughts about rebooting My Life on the D-List?

Kathy Griffin: I would love to. It’s no secret that Andy Cohen is not a fan of mine, so I don’t think it would come back to Bravo, but who knows? In this era, Netflix is doing reality. HBO Max is doing reality. So, I would love to do it, but I think the industry really has their eyes on this

tour. For the past six years, I have been told by people on the street, and even two big network executives, that I’m still toxic to middle America. Well, I’m going to middle America, so I’ll let you know!

Denny Patterson: There has been a shift in the comedy landscape over the last couple years. How would you say your comedic style has changed?

Kathy Griffin: I am more conscious of going hard and going in, it’s okay, but just be conscious of when you're punching up or when you're punching down. When I used to make fun of Britney Spears back in the day, I wasn't making fun of someone with a mental illness because I didn't know she had one. I was making fun of the fact that she, Paris, and Lindsay were multimillionaire teenagers clubbing all night, and I thought that was fair game. Would I do that now? Not with a teenager. Am I going to make fun of someone like Kanye? Yes, I am, and I know Kanye has mental health issues, but he’s also just an old fashioned misogynist.

Denny Patterson: After this tour, what’s next? What are some future goals you hope to accomplish with your career and platform?

Kathy Griffin: Oh, man. I really want to do another standup special. I'm in the Guinness Book of World Records for doing more televised stand-up specials than any comedian, male or female, living or dead. I’ve done 19, 21 altogether since two are albums, one of which I won a Grammy for, but yet, nobody will give me a special. So, I’m hoping this tour makes my own industry. Money talks and BS walks. My sales are good, so I’m hoping at the end of this, somebody will go, she deserves another special. I don’t care where it lives. I just want to continue to make people laugh.
