Celebrating September

The month of September is special in a number of ways. It signifies both the end of summer and the beginning of fall, bringing cooler temperatures and a sense of change in the air.

September is known as the Harvest Month, and in midSeptember, you’ll be awestruck by the Harvest Moon, which is also the second Supermoon of 2024 and will coincide with a partial lunar eclipse.

In particular, we recognize and honor the contributions of LGBTQ+ artists and creators who continue to shape and enrich the cultural landscape.

Additionally, September is highlighted by Labor Day, the national holiday celebrated on the first Monday of the month, honoring the contributions of workers and the labor movement. It’s also a day to celebrate Harvey Milk's contributions to the labor movement. One of Milk's primary efforts was to fight against discrimination in employment based on sexual orientation. He advocated for policies that protect LGBTQ+ individuals in the workplace, ensuring they could work without fear of being fired or harassed due to their identity. Milk built coalitions between the LGBTQ+ community and labor unions, strengthening the political influence of both groups. This alliance was crucial in improving wages, working conditions, and protections against discrimination.

This month, we usher in a new season filled with vibrant and diverse cultural and artistic endeavors, reminding us of the power of the arts to unite, inspire, and elevate our shared human experience. At OutClique Magazine, we are deeply committed to fostering inclusivity and celebrating the rich tapestry of voices that make up our community.

Let’s celebrate all that the month of September represents. We hope you enjoy this issue of OutClique Magazine.

Warm regards,

Dr. Steven O. Evans 1 Publisher and Editor-in-Chief OutClique Magazine

The Ship The World Has Been Waiting For! Brilliant Lady Hits

the High Seas September 2025

There’s a reason the world’s No. 1 cruise line named its fourth ship “Brilliant Lady.” Voted the best, large-ship liner in Condé Nast Traveler’s 2023 Readers’ Choice Awards and the best mega-ship liner in Travel + Leisure’s 2023 World’s Best Awards, Richard Branson’s brilliantly disruptive travel company, Virgin Voyages, is making waves with the announcement and debut of its fourth vessel, Brilliant Lady. Hitting the high seas in September of 2025, this ship will embark on the ultimate crosscountry sea trip with a series of longer itineraries up to 14 nights, unlike anything Virgin Voyages has offered before. For her inaugural season, Brilliant Lady’s North American Tour will feature highly requested homeports and iconic ports of calls like New York City to Bermuda and Canada, Los Angeles to Mexico, Miami to the ABC Islands, and Seattle to Alaska, along with one epic voyage through the Panama Canal.

As Virgin Voyages’ final vessel in its current fleet of Lady Ships, Brilliant Lady will carry through many of the signature touches Sailors have grown to know and love.

Making its return are Virgin Voyages’ thoughtfully designed interior spaces, red balcony hammocks, 20+ awardwinning eateries – everything from Korean BBQ to red hot Mexican food – a Happenings Cast in lieu of a traditional cruise director, and a collection of high-end wellness spaces ranging from a yoga perch with sweeping ocean views to a mermaid-inspired spa. What’s new, however, is the adapted frame, meaning Brilliant Lady is designed to sail through the Panama Canal and to navigate rugged new landscapes including the vast glaciers and fjords of Alaska.

Like her sisters before her, Brilliant Lady will feature a beautiful new mermaid. Designed by Toronto-based illustrator Janice Sung, Brilliant Lady’s mermaid takes inspiration from both historic Renaissance paintings as well as traditional Japanese and Chinese art, fashion and beauty. Along with Brilliant Lady’s stunning and courageous new guardian, Virgin Voyages will slowly release details on all new dining and entertainment options available on its newest vessel.

Brilliant Lady’s epic inaugural season includes routes from:

- New York City || September 2025 - October 2025

Five voyages from 5-13 nights || MerMaiden: September 5, 2025

Bringing it back to where it all started, Virgin Voyages kicks off the Brilliant Inaugural Season tour in the city that never sleeps. Following a premiere showcase for New Yorkers, Brilliant Lady will sail from Manhattan Cruise Terminal with itineraries ranging between five and 13 nights. The glittering archipelago of 100+ islets and cays await in Bermuda while Canada’s Quebec City shines for its charming European ambience, rich history and incredible architecture. Other new ports of call include Maine, Charleston, Boston, Halifax, and New Brunswick.

- Miami || October 2025 - April 2026 17 voyages from 7-12 nights || MerMaiden: October 17, 2025

Warming up for the winter season, Brilliant Lady will embark on a collection of extended Caribbean getaways with options between seven and 12 nights. Sailing from the company’s LEED-gold Terminal V in Miami, the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire & Curaçao) in the Southern Caribbean, along with Cartagena, are standouts. Sailor favorites like Turks & Caicos, Antigua and Grand Cayman are back to delight, along with newcomer Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Its lush tropical rainforests, pearly shores and cascading waterfalls turned this small fishing village into Jamaica’s most coveted port.

- Panama Canal Crossing || March 2026

One epic voyage for 16 nights

This crossing from Miami to Los Angeles spanning 16 nights is just one of several options in the brand’s Sea Change Series, what Virgin calls its legendary, bucketlist repositioning voyages. Departing on March 21, 2026, Brilliant Lady will say adios to Miami, sailing south towards Colombia and Panama before her eight-hour passage through the iconic Panama Canal. After a day at sea, Sailors can discover pura vida amid Costa Rica’s lush jungles before immersing themselves in the culture of Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage Site overlooking Guatemala’s acclaimed Lake Atitlán. One final stop in Los Cabos takes Brilliant Lady to LA, arriving April 6th.

- Los Angeles || April 2026 - May 2026

Four voyages from 5-8 nights || MerMaiden: April 7, 2026

While sunset used to refer to Virgin Voyages’ sailaway times and daily Moët happy hours at Richard’s Rooftop, now Sailors can cruise down Sunset Boulevard or catch Santa Monica’s famous orange skies when Brilliant Lady docks in LA. Five- to eight-night itineraries along Cali’s West Coast include calls in Baja California, Puerto Vallarta and San Diego. California’s coastal gems like Santa Barbara and Catalina Island put the classic Spanish architecture, golden beaches and waterfront promenades on full display.

- Seattle || May 2026 - September 2026

Voyage details coming soon || MerMaiden: May 2026

Summer 2026 will take Brilliant Lady to the vast landscapes of Alaska’s woody shores. Wildlife is abundant, giving Sailors ample opportunities to spot some of America’s most elusive animals including bald eagles, orca, seals, bears and humpback whales. Departing from Seattle, Virgin Voyages will offer a mixture of itineraries from May through September.

- Alaska Front(ier) of the Line Pass

Given the anticipated high demand for Alaskan voyages, starting May 8, 2024, Sailors can submit an early deposit to secure their priority window to book one of the limited Alaskan itineraries before they open to the public. Placeholders are $500 for Sea Terraces, $1,000 for RockStar Quarters and $2,500 for Mega RockStar Quarters.

- Brilliant 4 You Pass

Following the overwhelming success of its Summer Season Pass, Virgin Voyages is introducing a “Brilliant 4 You Pass” with unprecedented access to all of Brilliant Lady’s MerMaiden voyages. Digs in a RockStar Suite (Seriously Suite) are complemented by one Shore Thing per voyage.

Sailors previously slated to sail on Brilliant Lady will be given priority access to book a MerMaiden voyage.

To start planning a brilliant getaway, travelers can swim on over to VirginVoyages.com or contact their First Mate (travel advisor).

Checking in with Wilton Hotel & Pool Club

From the gracious portico where the valet takes your car, to the rooftop pool with views of Wilton Drive and Fort Lauderdale, a new addition to Wilton Manors’ booming developments on Dixie Highway is coming.

Wilton Hotel & Pool Club is coming soon. We don’t know exactly when, but we do know just about everything else, all the way down to the little design touches that will make it an instant destination. With 100 guest rooms and 23 suites, the hotel will have a ‘boutique’ vibe with tons of amenities.

“I want it to be the social heartbeat of the community,” owner/developer Mark Ellert told OutClique.

The hotel will be just south of Five Points and replaces the old funeral home. Once it opens, it will have a gym, spa, an outdoor yoga deck, a ‘grab and go’ snack stand on the ground floor and a coffee bar.

But Ellert says the place to be is the roof. “This is a fun community. The idea is to create a pool experience.”

The views will be amazing, but there will be a whole lot more to do than just gazing over the horizon. The pool deck will be 4400 square feet of luxury. Dozens of daybeds and loungers will flank the pool. The Sky Cafe and Sky Terrace restaurants will seat 84 with space for another 30 at the bars. Visitors there for business will have a great time, as two large meeting spaces will fill out the roof. Talk about a nice day at the office.

Wilton Manors has been trying to lure a hotel developer for years. They changed the city code to allow for taller buildings, which makes hotel projects like this profitable. While the city wants a hotel, they don’t want just any hotel. A megaresort wouldn’t fit the city. Ellert believes he’s found the sweet spot.

“The goal is to not be so small as to be like B&Bs and small guest houses. We had to find a sweet spot, of about a hundred rooms. Also, the right style of hotel. The importance to me is to reflect the community’s character.”

A Work of Art

The hotel will stand out by blending in. Ellert is enlisting local artists and muralists to decorate the hotel’s exterior. “What better way than to take the iconic Five Points intersection and turn it into a real signature gateway for the city?”

He admits he’s a developer, not an art critic. Ellert says he’ll bring in local artists to judge submissions and work with his team to make sure the hotel is a welcome addition from day one. “Putting the art onto the building is a way to connect with the community.”

City commissioners have given their approval and Ellert’s team is working with other agencies to make sure the project aligns with county and environmental requirements. There is no date set for breaking ground. Some say a 2027 opening is possible.

CDC Recommends Updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 and Flu Vaccines for Fall/Winter Virus Season

The CDC has recommended the updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccines and the updated 2024-2025 flu vaccines to protect against severe COVID-19 and flu this fall and winter.

It is safe to receive COVID-19 and flu vaccines at the same visit. Data continue to show the importance of vaccination to protect against severe outcomes of COVID-19 and flu, including hospitalization and death. In 2023, more than 916,300 people were hospitalized due to COVID-19 and more than 75,500 people died from COVID-19. During the 2023-2024 flu season, more than 44,900 people are estimated to have died from flu complications.

Updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 Vaccine Recommendation

CDC recommends everyone ages 6 months and older receive an updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine to protect against the potentially serious outcomes of COVID-19 this fall and winter whether or not they have ever previously been vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine. Updated COVID-19 vaccines will be available from Moderna, Novavax, and Pfizer later this year. This recommendation will take effect as soon as the new vaccines are available.

The virus that causes COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, is always changing and protection from COVID-19 vaccines declines over time. Receiving an updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine can restore and enhance protection against the virus variants currently responsible for most infections and hospitalizations in the United States. COVID-19 vaccination also reduces the chance of suffering the effects of Long COVID, which can develop during or following acute infection and last for an extended duration.

Last season, people who received a 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccine saw greater protection against illness and hospitalization than those who did not receive a 20232024 vaccine. To date, hundreds of millions of people have safely received a COVID-19 vaccine under the most intense vaccine safety monitoring in United States history.

Updated 2024-2025 Flu Vaccine Recommendation

CDC recommends everyone 6 months of age and older, with rare exceptions, receive an updated 2024-2025 flu vaccine to reduce the risk of influenza and its potentially serious complications this fall and winter. CDC encourages providers to begin their influenza vaccination planning efforts now and to vaccinate patients as indicated once 2024-2025 influenza vaccines become available.

Most people need only one dose of the flu vaccine each season. While CDC recommends flu vaccination as long as influenza viruses are circulating, September and October remain the best times for most people to get vaccinated.

Updated 2024-2025 flu vaccines will all be trivalent and will protect against an H1N1, H3N2 and a B/Victoria lineage virus. The composition of this season’s vaccine compared to last has been updated with a new influenza A(H3N2) virus.

Primary Care Physicians Can Prescribe Addiction Treatment

Results from a national survey indicate that many Americans, 61%, are unaware that primary care physicians can prescribe medications for opioid use disorder. The survey, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), also found that 82% of the people who reported ever misusing prescription or illicit opioids expressed comfort in going to their primary care physicians for medications for opioid use disorder. Among those who had not misused opioids, a majority, 74%, reported they would be comfortable referring their loved ones to primary care for these medications.

Notably, Black American respondents were most likely to incorrectly believe they could not receive medications for opioid use disorder via primary care. The findings suggest there is an important opportunity to increase awareness of these treatments and how to access them – using efforts that employ culturally specific strategies to reach different groups. Decades of research have shown the overwhelming benefit of existing medications for opioid use disorder, such as buprenorphine and methadone.

“Primary care is often people’s first point of contact in the healthcare system and can serve as a crucial setting to talk about addiction and receive life saving medications,”

said Nora D. Volkow, M.D., Director of NIH’s National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). “We need to provide education and support so that patients feel empowered to seek help from their primary care physician, and their doctors feel prepared to help them.”

Recent federal policy changes have removed some barriers to prescribing buprenorphine by primary care physicians. Despite these changes, there remain barriers to receiving medication for opioid use disorder. A recent study found that, in the year after elimination of the waiver requirement to prescribe buprenorphine, the number of prescribers increased, but the number of persons who received the medication did not.

“We’ve made great strides in making it easier for primary care doctors to prescribe these safe and effective treatments, but our study indicates a critical disconnect between the need for medications for opioid use disorder and people’s knowledge about how to access them,” said Brandon del Pozo, Ph.D., assistant professor at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Brown University School of Public Health and lead author on the study. “Science, public health, insurance, policy, and public perception all must align to improve access to treatment.”

Breaking the Silence Supporting Mental Health in Marginalized Communities

As September marks Suicide Prevention Month, it is essential to focus on the unique mental health challenges faced by marginalized communities. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is dedicated to advocating for mental health awareness and support, particularly within communities that often face increased risks due to discrimination and lack of resources. Providing these communities with essential tools and life-saving resources can help reduce suicide rates, ensuring that individuals have the support they need to overcome mental health challenges and see hope for the future.

Understanding the Challenges

The mental health challenges faced by marginalized communities, including the LGBTQ+ community, are significant. According to NAMI:

● LGBTQ+ youth are more than four times as likely to experience a mental health crisis compared to their heterosexual peers.

● Transgender individuals face an even higher risk, with 40% having faced severe mental health challenges in their lifetime, compared to less than 5% of the general U.S. population.

● The Trevor Project’s 2023 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health revealed that 42% of LGBTQ youth have contemplated self-harm in the past year, highlighting the need for targeted interventions and supportive environments.

Creating StigmaFree Workplaces

Preventing mental health crises, especially within marginalized communities, involves creating environments where mental health is openly discussed and supported.

As the CEO of NAMI Broward County, I am committed to fostering such environments through our StigmaFree Workplace initiative.

This initiative focuses on educating and empowering organizations to implement supportive policies, encourage open dialogue, and provide necessary resources for mental health support. According to the NAMI Workplace 2024 poll, 75% of employees reported that they are more likely to seek help for mental health issues if their workplace is perceived as supportive and stigma-free. By addressing mental health proactively, we can help reduce the stress and isolation that often lead to mental health challenges, including those that may result in suicide. Creating a StigmaFree workplace is crucial in preventing the severe consequences of workplace stressors.

If you are interested in making your workplace StigmaFree, we are available to present in-person at your company/ business (and, virtually if preferred). Please reach out to NAMI Broward County to arrange a presentation.

QPR:

A Lifesaving Intervention

In conjunction with promoting StigmaFree workplaces, NAMI Broward County also offers QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) 90-minute training sessions (virtually and in-person). QPR (like CPR) is an evidence-based approach that equips individuals with the skills to recognize the warning signs of a mental health crisis and to respond effectively.

1. Question: Learning how to ask tough questions in a direct, non-judgmental way.

2. Persuade: Encouraging the person in crisis to seek and accept help.

3. Refer: Guiding them to the appropriate resources and professional help.

Studies indicate that individuals trained in QPR are more likely to intervene and refer someone at risk to appropriate resources, potentially saving lives. By training people to become QPR-certified, we create a network of individuals capable of providing immediate support, helping to prevent crises by intervening at critical moments.

For those interested in QPR Gatekeeper Training for your team or organization, please contact NAMI Broward County to schedule a session.

NAMIWalks: Walking Together for Mental Health

Another significant initiative that ties into our mental health support efforts is our annual NAMIWalks event. This year, NAMIWalks Broward County will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at Nova Southeastern University. This event is not just a walk but a powerful demonstration of community solidarity and support for mental health.

Participants can form walk teams, raising both awareness and funds that directly support our no-cost programs and services. Whether you're walking in honor of a loved one, to support a friend, or for your own mental health journey, NAMIWalks symbolizes the strength and unity of our community in the fight against mental health stigma.

Conclusion

By addressing mental health challenges faced by marginalized groups and providing them with essential tools and life-saving resources, we can significantly reduce the instances where individuals feel that suicide is their only option. Through awareness, support, and accessible care, we can foster a society where everyone can thrive.

If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, dial 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Trained counselors are available 24/7 for free, confidential support.

If you are a mental health advocate committed to creating a safer, StigmaFree workplace or interested in QPR Gatekeeper Training, contact NAMI Broward County at (954) 316-9907 to arrange an in-person or virtual presentation. To learn about NAMIWalks, visit NAMIWalks.org/BrowardCounty.

To stay updated on our activities and initiatives, follow NAMI Broward County on Instagram (@NAMIBroward) and LinkedIn. You can also follow me on Instagram (@ drjoeo) and LinkedIn for more insights and updates on our ongoing efforts to support mental health in our community.

Juan Leo

Supporting Future Professionals Who Support the Community

Five South Florida students have each just received $2,500 to $5,000 scholarships from Latinos Salud’s Health & Support Services program. Now in its second year, the local non-profit agency’s scholarships invest in rising leaders who will support the next generation of LGBT community members.

This year’s scholars range from a college freshman to two PhD candidates, from new arrivals to first generation residents, hailing from Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. What the scholars have in common is the lived experiences that drive their passion to help other Latino and LGBT community members in South Florida, each in their own ways.

OutClique magazine got to know a little bit more about each of these inspiring young scholars.

Juan was raised on the border, where Brownsville, Texas meets Mexico. Now in his third year in the University of Miami’s clinical psychology PhD program, Juan says that he wants to help others raised in conservative Latino households learn to accept their identities and find happiness. “The conflict between my sexuality and my culture, religion, and family has been my motivator, as

it drives my passion to research. I want to study ways that sexuality interacts with Latino culture and religion. I want to give people the tools to resolve these conflicts in healthy and productive ways.”

After completing her bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry at the University of California, Berkely, Leo returned to Miami, where she is beginning her master’s degree in public health at Florida International University. As a transgender Brazilian American, Leo hopes to use her MPH “to begin to build a network of researchers / organizers / social workers in the field of Trans public health.” But she’s not stopping there! She plans to “break the glass ceiling by becoming a doctor, to uplift my community and make space for more Trans people to challenge the barriers and structures that contribute to health inequities in South Florida.”

After escaping the threats of violence in Venezuela, Carlos is excited to be embarking on his academic journey as a freshman at Miami-Dade College. “As an LGBT child, I experienced cruelty and betrayal from family members who lived in a world of deceit and evil, and I faced countless disappointments and sleepless nights when they found out I was gay. My goal is to

ensure that no child in the world has to go through that.”

Carlos will be the first in his family to receive a college degree, and he summarizes, “My primary mission will be to always support my community, which I love dearly, because I see every day each individual flourish despite adversity.”

Finishing his MBA, Nico wants to put marketing and communications to good use to help others. “I understand the importance of creating safe and inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals, and I am committed to using my education and experiences to advocate for change and promote equality in South Florida.” Nico is investigating how new media can reach isolated or marginalized Latino populations, to give them support.

Jahn’s drive has already taken him through a master’s degree, and a fellowship in Guatemala with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He will finish his PhD in prevention science and community health at the University of Miami in just two years, which he hopes “to use to address persistent gaps in access to HIVprevention and care services among individuals heavily burdened by the HIV epidemic, particularly Latino/x/e immigrant men who have sex with men in South Florida.”

Like most of Latinos Salud’s Pride scholars, Jahn stressed that the program’s mentorship component was as important for his career goals as the scholarship is for his financial needs, “As someone with limited social support, the opportunity to forge meaningful connections, receive personalized mentorship, and collaborate with Latinos Salud are invaluable.”

Readers can view the scholars’ spotlight interviews on any of Latinos Salud’s social media channels. Latinos Salud will also host a pair of small “meet the scholars” events this Fall, one in each county.

Is Monogamy Dead?

Are Open Relationships the Future of Gay Relationships?

Monogamy is a hot topic in the LGBTQ+ community, especially since many gay men choose open relationships. The big question is, which relationship type is correct? Both monogamous and open relationships can work beautifully if both partners are on the same page and true to themselves.

When helping men find healthy, long-term relationships, I ask, "What are your values, and what relationship structure aligns with you?" Many men choose monogamy or openness based on societal pressures. It's crucial to form your own beliefs, not just follow what others think is right.

Evaluating your core values is essential in dating intentionally. If you genuinely don’t believe in monogamy, own it! There’s no shame in choosing a relationship structure that matches your authentic self.

So, what are some of the common misconceptions and how can you succeed?

Common Misconceptions

1. Monogamy is not achievable for gay men: Many believe gay men can’t sustain monogamous relationships, but many do, just like anyone else.

2. Gay relationships are inherently non-monogamous: While some choose non-monogamous structures, many prefer monogamy.

3. Monogamy is boring or restrictive: Monogamous relationships can be fulfilling, passionate, and dynamic.

4. Gay men are more likely to cheat: Infidelity can happen in any relationship and isn’t exclusive to gay men.

5. Monogamy is a heteronormative construct: Many gay men embrace monogamy as it aligns with their values and desires.

6. Open relationships are the only alternative: There are diverse relationship structures; monogamy is one valid option.

What You Need to Succeed

1. Open Communication: Discuss feelings, needs, and boundaries openly.

2. Trust: Build trust through honesty, reliability, and consistency.

3. Respect for Boundaries: Communicate and respect each other’s boundaries.

4. Emotional Connection: Prioritize emotional intimacy and understanding.

5. Fidelity and Commitment: Stay sexually exclusive and prioritize the relationship.

6. Shared Values and Goals: Align on values, goals, and future plans.

7. Quality Time Together: Spend quality time to maintain connection.

8. Conflict Resolution Skills: Develop effective conflict resolution skills.

9. Supportive Community: Surround yourself with a supportive community.

Birthday Reflections

September brings another birthday for yours truly! Yes, on September 21st I will celebrate another year around the sun. There are so many folks who blaze over their birthdays and wish to let it pass with no celebration; I am not one of those people. I think birthdays are such a gift and a reminder that there was an era of queer folks who didn’t live beyond 25. I am here and honoring my life, and theirs as well.

I like to celebrate the hurdles many of us queer folks have to overcome as young children like constant bullying and confusion over being different. Aside from being queer, I am a first-generation college graduate who hails from a single mother raising two kids. I know this sounds like an exaggeration, but one year, we were so poor that we ate nothing but pancakes for dinner for a whole summer. We now lovingly call that The Pancake Summer. I also grew up in a mobile home for nearly 20 years of my life. But, I had a wonderful community that helped to raise me, friends I still talk to this day, and memories of being an actual kid playing on a playground without my cellphone.

Many don’t know that my father passed away when I was

17; though he left when I was 8 years of age. You see, he passed away while incarcerated for sexual abuse. Our family was devastated emotionally, physically, and financially. According to all statistics, I should not have graduated high school, made it into a college, much less graduated from a college. It was the arts that saved me. It was the arts that gave me additional family support. It was the arts that served as a missing parental unit, thus allowing my mother some time, peace and quiet while I was away at millions of rehearsals. I would be remiss if I didn’t comment that among the reasons I made it “out alive” was determination, yes, but also systematic privilege. Thus, my survival is bittersweet as I reflect on my many friends who didn’t “make it out alive”.

So for my birthday, I ask that you respect the privilege you have and try to fight against systematic ways of life like racism, sexism, ageism, and judgment on socioeconomic status. Honor those fallen before you. Make way for more to come along in the following years, even if you won’t be there to see it. Celebrate your life and your accomplishments! We are all the colors of our fabulous queer rainbow.

Lover Of Men is Coming to Theaters Nationwide on September 6, 2024

Lover Of Men examines the intimate life of America’s most consequential president, Abraham Lincoln. As told by preeminent Lincoln scholars and never before seen photographs and letters, the film details Lincoln’s romantic relationships with men. Lover Of Men widens its lens into the history of human sexual fluidity and focuses on the profound differences between sexual mores of the nineteenth century and those we hold today. The film fills in an important missing piece of American history and challenges the audience to consider why we hold such a limited view of human sexuality. Lover Of Men is not only an exploration of gender roles and sexual identity, but also serves as an examination of American intolerance. Lover Of Men is directed by Shaun Peterson.

The OutClique Exclusive Interview Kris Andersson

Island City Stage’s Die, Mommie, Die!, Dixie Longate, & More

We all know and love Kris Andersson as drag personality Dixie Longate, our favorite fast-talking, gum chewing, redheaded Tupperware saleswoman, but audiences will have a chance to see him step into a different pair of high heels as he stars in Island City Stage’s upcoming production of Die, Mommie, Die!

From the mind of playwright Charles Busch, this comic melodrama evokes the 1960s “Grande Dame Guignol” films that featured aging Hollywood legends like Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, and Lana Turner. Following ex-pop singer Angela Arden, she is trapped in a hateful marriage with film producer Sol Sussman and is desperate to find happiness with her younger lover, an out-of-work TV actor named Tony Parker. Therefore, she murders her husband with the aid of a poisoned suppository.

In a plot that reflects Greek tragedy as well as Hollywood kitsch, her children slip her some LSD, provoking a wild acid trip, which results in several secrets being revealed.

According to Andersson, he is excited to step away from the Dixie spotlight and take on a role he considers to be a little outside of his comfort zone.

“The script is so fun and so clever, and as I'm starting to pull it apart, I'm looking forward to throwing myself into it and getting people's expectation of what they're going to see kind of ripped out of their minds and replacing it with something that's bigger, bolder, and more fun,” he exclaims. “Maybe a little more biting and stinging than they're used to seeing me.”

Die, Mommie, Die! will play at Island City Stage August 22 - September 22, 2024, and OutClique caught up with Andersson to talk more about the show and how he was chosen to play Angela, as well as his overall passion for the arts and what’s next for his entertainment career.

Denny Patterson: Thank you for taking some time to

chat with me, Kris! How excited are you to perform Die, Mommie, Die! at Island City Stage?

Kris Andersson: I am so excited! I've been doing a specific character, Dixie Longate, for the last 22 years, so this is the first time in a long time I’ll be given the chance to work on other people’s material with a cast. Doing things that are not just self-generated on stage, so I'm looking forward to it.

Denny Patterson: For those who are unfamiliar with this show, can you give us a hint as to what audiences can expect?

Kris Andersson: It’s sort of a 1960s throwback romp, evoking those old Joan Crawford and Anne Bancroft movies where everything has a little arch, a little eyebrow raise, and everything is campy and more cuffed up than it needs to be. That is where all the fun is! It’s about a family at odds with each other, and the family all have really wide archetypes. We have a giant, performing mother that’s a little past her prime, her producer husband that’s fallen on hard times, then they’re very unruly kids. They all sort through their day with a little bit of murder and mayhem thrown in for good measure.

Denny Patterson: Is this your first time performing at Island City Stage?

Kris Andersson: This is my first time performing under the banner of Island City. I created a show during the pandemic called Dixie’s Happy Hour, and they were kind enough to let me film the show in there and do some test audiences with it. So, this is my first time as an official part of their season.

Denny Patterson: How did you get pegged to play the starring role of Angela Arden?

Kris Andersson: Andy Rogow and I have become friends over the years, and he brought the play to my attention and said, ‘Look, this is a part I think you would do very well with. I think you would have a lot of fun with it and I think our audiences would enjoy seeing what you make of it.’

So many people know me as Dixie since I’ve been doing her for the last 22 years, and even though this is still in the drag wheelhouse, it’s a bit of a departure from Dixie. I love the challenge of this because so many people know me as a specific thing, so it will be fun to kind of reinvent myself a little bit and see what I can bring to the role.

Denny Patterson: Is there a part or moment within the show you are looking forward to the most?

Kris Andersson: The whole thing makes me laugh because I'm in almost every scene in the play, and every scene is its own challenge because of the way the story arcs. I don't want to give anything away, but trying to deal with my husband that I’m having major issues with as I’m trying to get out of the marriage. Trying to deal with two very bizarrely spoiled children, trying to deal with a love interest on the side who's not too on the side (laughs). Every piece of it is going to be fun, so I'm looking forward to the entirety of the challenge because it's so out of my wheelhouse.

Denny Patterson: Is there anything you ultimately hope audiences take away from Die, Mommie, Die!?

Kris Andersson: I just hope they have a great time and have an unexpected lift. It's a very, very funny show, but at the same time, there's a little challenge to Angela and the story that she's telling; being responsible for your own decisions. At the end, there’s a great moment that wraps it all up where she’s like, shoot, I did everything wrong and now I’ve got to pay the piper for it. I'm looking forward to that being a kind of bigger message than just within the show. Hopefully, people leave with that message as well.

Denny Patterson: Have you been in touch or worked with the production’s playwright, Charles Busch, before?

Kris Andersson: We are like one degree of separation through a lot of people, but I have never personally met or worked with him before. I know his work, so I'm very excited to hopefully pay homage to not only the great work that he does, but also him as a creator.

Denny Patterson: Have you always had a passion for the performing arts?

Kris Andersson: Ever since I was a kid. I've always wanted to be in theater and I've always wanted to be on the stage. I love storytelling, I love playing pretend, and I'm one of those people who's been lucky enough to do it as a full-time career. I have wonderful parents that have always supported me and allowed me to find my own voice.

Denny Patterson: And how did your journey with drag begin?

Kris Andersson: My journey with drag began when I did a fundraiser. I was living in LA for quite a while, and a friend asked me if I would be involved in this AIDS fundraiser, and the whole thing was a mock drag beauty pageant. Like a mock Miss USA pageant. So, the first time I ever did drag was to raise money. Then a friend of mine dared me to sell Tupperware in drag, as a character, and I took the dare. It was the weirdest dare I've ever taken, but I developed that into a career becoming the top selling Tupperware rep in the U.S. That then turned into a show that ran off-Broadway, and we just finished our 16th year of touring. It’s been a wild journey and not something I ever planned on doing. It’s something that just took off, and I found myself having just as many pairs of women's high heels as I do men's sneakers!

Denny Patterson: Wow, it’s hard to believe you just wrapped up your 16th season of Dixie’s Tupperware Party!

Kris Andersson: I know! We did a four-week run at the Kennedy Center in D.C., which was an amazing honor to be invited to play there. I’ve got a little downtime to do Die, Mommie, Die!, but then I’m back on the road for Season 17, which is going to be the final season of the tour. I have other things now that I’m starting to dig my hands into, so I want to keep growing and building. Dixie has been a great ride for me, but there’s more stuff that I want to do. I think this is the perfect time to sort of put the bow on that package and hand off the torch to other people.

Denny Patterson: Are you allowed to share any details about some of these upcoming projects that you’re involved with?

Kris Andersson: I'm currently working with a couple of collaborators out of New York on two ideas for shows. We’re sort of in the developmental stages and getting resources together, and they’re pretty big projects, so I’m not at complete liberty to talk about it right now because of where they are, but they’re still in the theater space.

They’re going to grow past some of the stuff I’ve done, and they are challenging me a lot. I’m getting more and more outside of my comfort zone.

Denny Patterson: Do you have any desire to do any TV or film?

Kris Andersson: I dove into TV and film back in my LA days, and I would love to go back into that. However, I know it's a challenging time right now post-writer’s strike, postactor’s strike, and post-COVID. TV and film production has definitely taken a hit, as has theater, and I know I will be back in film and TV eventually, but right now, what's really standing out to me is creating in the live theater space and doing things that are a bit more challenging and a bit more unique than other things I've done in the past. That’s where my focus will be over the next couple years.

Denny Patterson: When you say you’re wrapping up Dixie’s Tupperware Party, are you also putting Dixie Longate away as well, or will she be involved with some of these new ventures?

Kris Andersson: I think Dixie is going to go quiet for a little bit while I work on this other stuff. We have an eightweek run of shows in Denver in the summer of 2025, and Denver is a very friendly market. They’ve been wonderful to me and this will be our ninth time in the market doing Dixie shows. They actually co-produced my second show, which is called Never Wear a Tube Top While Riding A Mechanical Bull (and 16 other things I learned while I was drinking last Thursday), so we're going to do four weeks of Dixie’s Tupperware Party and then four weeks of Never Wear a Tube Top. That show got its start in Denver, and it will kind of be poetic to wrap it up there, and I think that will be the perfect time to say, okay, Dixie gets to have a break. I don't know if she will come back, but you never know. Life is always an adventure and you never know what can happen. I've been able to have an incredible life and career with Dixie, and I'm very grateful for that, but I also know I don't want that to be the only thing that I get to dig my hands into.

Seventy Years Young!

“You’re only 70 years old?,” my friend asked with great surprise.

“Only 70? That’s pretty good for South Florida,” I proudly replied.

No, my friend was not referring to my age. I am not 70, though I will turn the big 4-0 in September. She was talking about my congregation, the United Church of Christ Fort Lauderdale, which will celebrate 70 years in South Florida this October.

My friend is a fellow clergy person from Connecticut, whose church turned 300 years old a few summers ago. No wonder she thought 70 was young! I had to explain to her that for Fort Lauderdale, which was founded in 1911, a 70-year-old organization is pretty rare.

And it got me reflecting on what it takes for an organization, a community, or a person to make it to 70 years. I’d say that there is quite a bit of resilience required to survive for that long in our world today; as well as some strength, ingenuity, integrity, and the ability to build relationships with others for support.

And perhaps most of all, there must be something good and true about the work you are doing, something that resonates with others that has kept you around so long. For my church, I believe it is our welcome, our work for peace and justice, and our spirit of compassion and joy that has kept us going for 70 years.

What is it about you, the organizations you are a part of, and the community that you call “home?” What has kept you alive and strong for this long? And what is driving you into the future? I hope you have some good answers! And I’d love for you to celebrate 70 years with my church in October! Be on the lookout for some great events this fall!

Peace and love,

Pastor Aaron

The Broward Center recently welcomed a new President and CEO, Ty Sutton, who brings with him not only a wealth of experience from running top arts and cultural organizations in the country but a much-needed, forward way of thinking about an industry that is constantly in flux. Charming and personable, his outlook is decidedly refreshing, his energy contagious and his spirit unstoppable.

Charles Baran: Hi Ty! I know it’s a little late, but welcome to Florida!

Ty Sutton: My family just arrived, so it feels like I just got here too, so thank you!

Charles Baran: You bring 20 years of performing arts leadership experience to the Broward Center. What exciting plans do you have?

Ty Sutton: A lot of our traditional art forms are struggling to find audiences. My job is to look at what’s next. Looking out twenty or thirty years and being an organization that is open to what art is, knowing that it might be different from what it’s been.

Charles Baran: What are the challenges of coming into an organization as well established as the Broward Center?

Ty Sutton: This is now the fifth performing arts center I’ve run. The challenges are to find a path forward, to take all the things that have been so incredibly successful, keeping many of those things and making sure we take care of them and also to have the courage to stop doing some of the things that really aren’t as valid.

It’s about having the courage to try new things.

Charles Baran: You relocated to Florida after a six-year tenure at Dayton Live. Do you intend to bring any of those ideas or programs to all of us down here in Fort Lauderdale?

Ty Sutton: My time in Dayton was great. The lessons I take away are how to work with an organization that means a lot to the community. How you listen to people. How to lead in the arts, how to be a champion, how to work with people from all diverse walks of life and be a partner to them.

Charles Baran: Has the elimination of $32 million in arts funding by the governor of Florida impacted the Broward Center in any way?

Ty Sutton: There is an impact for us but because our

budget is so large, it was a smaller financial impact than other organizations felt. And it’s going to be a tough year for a lot of those organizations. We need to tell the story of the creative sector better to get public support and also work with others that are passionate about the arts like many of South Florida’s private foundations. I belong to a group that includes the five largest performing arts centers in Florida: the Kravis Center in West Palm, the Arsht Center in Miami, the Straz Center in Tampa, the Dr. Phillips Center in Orlando and the Broward Center. We’re working on a lot of these issues to identify ways to help our smaller arts organizations.

Charles Baran: What are a few highlights of the upcoming Broward season?

Ty Sutton: From the Broadway in Fort Lauderdale series we have MJ, The Musical. It’s written by Lynn Nottage who won the Pulitzer for drama twice. We have Shucked which is super-funny. I’m excited about Ben Folds with his Paper Airplane Request Tour. We have the MOMIX dance troupe doing their incredible ALICE piece, inspired by “Alice in Wonderland.” And I love what Slow Burn Theatre Company is doing. The Witches of Eastwick is something very few people have ever seen done. Then they’re doing Parade which was incredible on Broadway.

Charles Baran: What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

Ty Sutton: I think the education programs. Another thing I find rewarding is connecting people. Arts bring people together even if they have nothing else in common. Giving people opportunities to have an experience with somebody else is a positive thing and is what I value the most about what we do.

Charles Baran: Tell me more about these education programs.

Ty Sutton: The Broward Center runs the largest, free artsin-education program in the country. We run a program called the SEAS Program (Student Enrichment Through The Arts). We also work a lot with the neurodivergent community. To see a robust education program here that is so inclusive is really a fantastic thing and one that we will keep growing.

Charles Baran: Thank you for your time, Ty. It’s been an inspirational chat!

Ty Sutton: You’re welcome, Charles. I look forward to seeing you at the Broward Center this season.

Tim Murray is Witches!

Tim Murray brings his spooky debut comedy hour Witches! to the Arsht Center. The show is a mix of standup and original comedy songs about his favorite pop culture witches. Murray is like a gay Bo Burnham, but painted green and doing drag!

In Witches!, Murray uses hilarious personal stories about growing up a closeted, feminine boy who tried hard to pass as straight to avoid being burned at the stake. He will have you howling at the moon, cackling at his jokes and crying (but hopefully not melting).

The show is a tribute to LGBTQIA people and how we discover our magic once we find our coven. Murray speaks to the many queer people who feel as if they have to hide themselves to fit in and how their powers

grow stronger once they find their queer family.

From The Craft to Wicked, the Sanderson Sisters, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Angelica Houston's “Grand High Witch,” Murray celebrates famous sorceresses throughout history and uses their stories as a parallel to the queer witch hunt.

His songs include "I Wanna Be Witches," which is about pretending to be superheroes with straight boys growing up but turning all his characters into witches, and "I Hate Kids," where he highlights how he has felt like a 40-yearold woman since he was 8 years old and has hated children since he was one himself. In “Dr. Dillamond’s Lament,” a character from Wicked reveals a deep secret in a show stopping number.

We are changing things up this October, reminding the LGBTQ+ community just how powerful we are if we stick together!

Back to the Drive Celebration 2 asks you to come as the real, or fictional, person who inspires you most. Attendees are encouraged to dress up as historical LGBTQIA+ icons or fictional characters that inspired them such as Freddie Mercury, Harvey Milk, Gertrude Stein, Billie Eilish, RuPaul, Andy Warhol, Billie Jean King, Marsha P. Johnson, Wanda Sykes or Elton John. Prizes will be awarded for the most creative, most authentic, and more. Guests will be able to enjoy food, open bar, music, and special guests (last year was the unforgettable Billy Porter).

“Stonewall is about history and books, but we still know how to have fun. After all, the characters who move us, the historic figures who excite us, are all part of the history we collect and preserve. Now we have a chance to see them all come alive,” said Executive Director Robert Kesten. “This year’s celebration will be a night to embrace our LGBTQIA+ history and culture, which includes music, food, and our community's creativity. We are eager to see the creative attire, and "who" will attend Back to the Drive Celebration 2 . Will Liberace show up? Will Ricky Martin make an appearance? Are you coming as Silvia Rivera? All are welcome, even those without costumes! This event is essential to our being able to assist educators across the nation with information they need to do their work, to improve the lives of the students they serve and to make everyone understand that LGBTQ+ history is American History. We know our community thinks this is as important as we do."

Zoetic Stage and Adrienne Arsht Center present The Pillowman

October 24-November 10, 2024

After wildly successful productions of Frankenstein and Dracula, Zoetic Stage returns to the horror genre with The Pillowman, a haunting play by Martin McDonagh.

With echoes of Stoppard, Kafka and the Brothers Grimm, this modern classic centers on a writer in an unnamed totalitarian state who is being interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a series of child murders. The result is an urgent work of theatrical bravura and an unflinching examination of the very nature and purpose of art. It’s a terrifyingly perfect way to celebrate the Halloween season.

City Theatre and Adrienne Arsht Center present Black Santa – Southeastern Premiere!

December 5-22, 2024

Before Abbott Elementary, there was Patrice Patterson at Dartmouth Day School. Shortly before Christmas break, a third grader named Sharifa stands in front of her class and says, “Santa Claus is a Black man from Detroit," sending the school into an uproar. To quell the storm, Patrice, the school's only Black teacher, is asked to create an ad campaign within the school to make Santa white again. As events unfold, Sharifa’s enrollment is placed in jeopardy, and Patrice must decide how to protect Sharifa and ultimately herself. This absurdist comedy examines how race and racial bias can have a foothold on one of the most benign figures — Santa Claus.

Zoetic Stage and Adrienne Arsht Center present POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive – Miami Premiere! January 9-26, 2025

POTUS is a comedy about the women in charge of the man in charge of the free world! When the president unwittingly spins a PR nightmare into a global crisis, the seven brilliant and beleaguered women he relies upon most risk life, liberty and the pursuit of sanity to keep the commander in chief out of trouble. Selina Fillinger's brilliant, all-female farce took Broadway by storm in a star-studded production that earned three 2022 Tony Award nominations. Its Miami premiere at Zoetic Stage will feature a cast of South Florida's finest and funniest female actors.

Zoetic Stage and Adrienne Arsht Center present Fiddler on the Roof

March 13 - April 6, 2025

Artistic director Stuart Meltzer has a history of presenting fresh, bold interpretations of classics of the musical theater canon, focusing on the intimacy of performance and storytelling. In that tradition, Zoetic Stage will present Fiddler on the Roof, the brainchild of Broadway legends Jerome Robbins and Harold Prince, songwriters Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick and book writer Joseph Stein.

Set in the village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor milkman, and his five daughters as he tries to protect them and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Fiddler on the Roof's universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion. With iconic and beloved songs such as "Sunrise, Sunset," "If I Were a Rich Man" and "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," Fiddler on the Roof is a story of humor, heart and honesty.

Zoetic Stage and Adrienne Arsht Center present The Comeuppance – Florida Premiere! May 8-25, 2025

In The Comeuppance, an off-Broadway hit by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (“one of this country's most original and illuminating writers" according to The New York Times), a self proclaimed "Multi-Ethnic Reject Group" reconvenes for their 20th high school reunion. Over alcohol and other substances, they try to reconnect who they once were with whom they've become as they reminisce about their teenage selves and reveal how their lives have unfolded since graduation.

Dine on authentic meals of bratwurst and schnitzel, sip imported and domestic beers, schnapps, 30 different types of liquor, and listen to entertainment by two original Oktoberfest bands direct from Germany. Enjoy family-friendly entertainment with arts and crafts, carnival and games, folk-dancing, vendor displays and souvenirs.

Bratwursts & Beers

Celebrate Germany without leaving The Palm Beaches. This Oktoberfest celebration features a traditional yet modern Bavarian atmosphere, authentic German meals, beer and brat booths, a biergarten, family-friendly entertainment for the kids with arts & crafts and games, vendor displays, souvenirs, and continuous live entertainment provided by two bands direct from the Munich Oktoberfest.

German attire is not required, but it certainly does make the celebration more interesting.
