The Largest Gay Resort in the United States

The Grand Resort and Spa will soon celebrate its 25th anniversary. However, this will be the first year the resort can be called “the largest gay resort in the United States.” Within the past two years, The Grand Resort and Spa has absorbed The Worthington, Alcazar, and Villa Venice Resorts. Now interconnected with tropical lush walkways, the oasis within the city offers four swimming pools, three jacuzzis, and a full-service spa.

With 96 rooms, The Grand is proud to maintain repeat business. Many guests even prefer to stay in the familiar areas of their favorite former resort while enjoying the expanded and welcoming community of locals as well as travelers. General Manager Patrick Flaherty states, “customer service and elevating the guest experience” is the reason many visitors return and new clients initially visit. The world class spa offers a full range of services including customized and specialty massages, facials, wet-room treatments, manicures, pedicures, and waxing. A fitness facility and gym complement the spa. There are clothing optional areas in the

21-year-old and over resort, but Flaherty assures patrons are “friendly and welcoming to others, not pretentious, and want all to feel part of a gay community in a relaxing atmosphere.”

Not only does The Grand Resort welcome many visitors, but also offers daily passes for only $35. Cocktail hour is enjoyed Thursday through Sunday while guests chat with new and old friends as the sun sets beyond the beach just a few steps away.

Future plans for The Grand Resort and Spa include room renovations, a restaurant/cafe, and an on-site bar. The Courtyard will soon host public events such as art festivals, wine and cheese mixers, and even yoga classes. Flaherty invites new guests to see the new and improved Grand Resort and Spa and says, “We are ready for our close-up!”

More information may be found at TheGrandResortAndSpa. com. The Grand is a proud sponsor of The Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida and The Bears of South Florida.

Pub On the Drive Celebrates 13 Years

A pub by any other name is still a pub. Known over the years as The Village Pub, The Pub, and now Pub On the Drive, the community watering hole has spent the last thirteen years growing with the community.

Owner Alex Sadeghi’s vision is omnipresent. He started The Village Pub as a way to become an active member of Wilton Manors at a time when he decided to stay in the U.S. and start a business. He saw the space was available and signed a lease. Alibi founder George Kessinger helped him get started, and eventually, he introduced him to a couple of friends who came in as business partners.

“George said they had a lot of experience in bars,” and they were well-established in the local gay bar industry, Sadeghi told OutClique. Five years later, they were ready to cash out, but Sadeghi was here for the long haul. He met Michael Connell, who became Sadeghi’s new business partner. “He was one of my best and most supportive customers and had great experience.”

The bar quickly became an anchor for nightly entertainment, from variety Sunday brunch shows to karaoke nights to bringing in the best drag entertainment from South Florida and beyond.

“Every night we have special entertainers, which bring in huge crowds to the bar and make the bar a huge success.”

Once they upgraded the entertainment, they needed to upgrade the kitchen and menu. “We made the kitchen bigger and focused on the food and a better menu. This

Author: John Hayden | Photos

helped us tremendously.” The menu features upscale classic American bar fare.

Their latest upgrade came a year ago when the covered outdoor patio and bar opened. It is a quieter space where people can talk over their drinks and dinners. When there are events out there, they are different from the musical acts inside. There are group gatherings, private parties, trivia, poker, and more. The patio was Connell’s last project for The Pub; we lost Michael last autumn.

The patio and adjacent parking lot have taken on a life of their own. A pair of political kickoff events were held there, The Pet Project held its Cornhole Tournament, and softball teams' afterparties.

But even without the great location, food, and entertainment, you get the feeling people would come to Pub no matter what. When you walk in, you know someone. The smiles are warm, and the drinks are cold. Pub On the Drive sits in the heart of Wilton Manors and is a big part of what makes the city tick. “For the past thirteen years, The Pub has consistently been revered by the local community as well as nationwide. We are extremely lucky to have so much ongoing support. I would definitely like to thank the staff (DJs, bartenders, waiters, cooks, dishwashers, food runners, hosts, chefs, and managers) who all have helped keep Pub On the Drive doing so well. The Pub is also involved in many different charities, such as Smart Ride, Poverello, The Pet Project and Kids in Distress, Broward House, just to name a few. All of them are very important for us. We have entertainment every night of the week ranging from Drag Entertainers, Live Singers, Karaoke, Showtunes, National Recording Acts and much more. Everyone is welcome!”

Will Howard Bids Farewell as Mr. Ramrod 2024

Stepping down on October 13, 2024, Will Howard reflects on a year of unity, love, and mental health advocacy within the leather-fetish and LGBTQIA+ communities.

Will Howard, affectionately known as Leatherman Will, will conclude his tenure as Mr. Ramrod 2024 on the evening of October 13. Throughout his year-long journey, Will dedicated himself to showcasing the profound impact a titleholder can have by utilizing his platform to foster unity and inspire positive change within the leather-fetish and LGBTQIA+ communities.

Tired of witnessing the decline of leather communities over the past decade, Will took decisive action. Believing that fellowship is the cornerstone of unity, he emphasized that everyone desires belonging, inclusion, and love. "Love builds relationships. Love is understanding. Love is acceptance," he affirmed.

To embody these principles, Will organized events like the Leather Family Social. These gatherings were intentionally inclusive and diverse, creating spaces where individuals could share perspectives and build meaningful relationships. Such environments became the foundation for open, healthy conversations on critical issues affecting the community, notably mental health.

Initially focusing on two primary topics, Will soon realized that mental health was a more pervasive issue than he had anticipated. Recognizing that mental health challenges affect nearly everyone to some degree, he prioritized raising awareness and promoting understanding. "With love, we teach, listen, and help each other unconditionally,"

he stated. "This is how we diminish the effects of mental health issues and create an environment where we all belong, are understood, and are loved."

Will's message of inclusiveness and love resonated deeply, eliciting overwhelming support from the community. Businesses like the Ramrod, LGBTQIA+ establishments, the leather-fetish community, and countless individuals contributed to making his vision a reality—not just in South Florida, but nationwide.

Expressing his heartfelt gratitude, Will shared, "Thank you for an exceptional year that has changed my life forever. I am proud of who I am and what a humble honor it has been to serve all of you."

As he steps down, Will leaves behind a legacy of love, fellowship, and advocacy that will continue to inspire and strengthen the communities he holds dear.

CAN Community Health

Leading the Charge in Ending HIV

In the realm of healthcare organizations dedicated to battling HIV/AIDS, CAN Community Health stands out as a beacon of hope and progress. Founded in 1991, CAN has evolved into a powerhouse in the fight against this enduring global health crisis. With a mission centered on compassionate care, education, and advocacy, CAN Community Health has become a vital force in ending HIV.

At the core of CAN’s identity is its unwavering commitment to providing comprehensive care to all individuals affected by HIV/AIDS. Regardless of background or financial status, CAN ensures that everyone receives the support and services they need. This inclusivity is not just a slogan; it’s a guiding principle that permeates every aspect of CAN’s operations.

One of the key strengths of CAN Community Health is its holistic approach to healthcare. Beyond medical treatment, CAN offers a wide range of services aimed at improving the overall well-being of its patients. This includes mental health support, and assistance with accessing and navigating vital resources such as housing and transportation. By addressing the diverse needs of individuals living with HIV/AIDS, CAN empowers individuals to lead healthy lives.

Education plays a crucial role in CAN’s strategy to combat HIV/AIDS. Through outreach programs, workshops, and community events, CAN raises awareness about prevention, testing, and treatment options. By dispelling myths and misconceptions, CAN fosters a more informed and supportive environment for those affected by HIV/ AIDS. Moreover, CAN’s emphasis on education extends to healthcare professionals, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to deliver stigma-free, high-quality care.

Advocacy is another cornerstone of CAN’s mission. CAN Community Health actively engages with policymakers, stakeholders, and the public to advocate for policies that support individuals living with HIV/AIDS. This includes advocating for affordable healthcare, increased funding for research and treatment, and initiatives to reduce stigma and discrimination. By amplifying the voices of those affected by HIV/AIDS, CAN drives meaningful change at local, national, and international levels.

One of CAN’s most significant achievements is its role in advancing HIV/AIDS research and innovation. Through partnerships with leading research institutions such as Moffitt Cancer Center and pharmaceutical companies, CAN contributes to the development of new treatments and therapies. This commitment to innovation ensures that patients have access to cutting-edge medical advancements, improving outcomes and quality of life.

The success of CAN Community Health is a testament to the dedication and passion of its staff, volunteers, and supporters. Their tireless efforts have transformed lives and made significant strides in the fight against HIV/AIDS. However, challenges remain, including disparities in access to care, stigma, and the ongoing quest for a cure. CAN continues to push forward, guided by its unwavering commitment to ending HIV/AIDS once and for all.

As we reflect on CAN Community Health’s legacy and impact, it is clear that the journey towards ending HIV/ AIDS is a collective endeavor. It requires collaboration, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to justice and equality. With CAN Community Health leading the charge, and by working together with other organizations, we can envision a future where HIV/AIDS is no longer a threat, but a chapter in history overcome through resilience and unity.

Stars Aligned for Dr. Kal Gajraj When He Joined CAN Community Health

The last time OutClique interviewed Dr. Kal Gajraj was in July of 2020, shortly after he became Executive Director of The Peter London Dance Company, and the pandemic shuttered businesses, challenging arts and entertainment to find a new way to engage patrons by presenting performances online.

During that time, Dr. Gajraj also taught classes at Miami Dade College while beginning his doctorate at St. Thomas University in Miami. In July of this year, Gajraj defended his dissertation on the adoption of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in multigenerational workplaces and earned his PhD in Philosophy and Ethical Leadership.

“Not only am I a DEI champion in my personal life, but there are a few times in your life when you can combine your passions with all different areas of your life. I feel like all of my stars have aligned because I’ve also been able to incorporate that in my education, now that I have

my doctorate degree, and now in my profession as well,” expressed Dr. Gajraj.

“For me, it’s really about giving a voice to the voiceless, being able to speak up for marginalized communities, no matter their color, sex, or religion. For me, being gay, a first-generation American, and Muslim, I check several boxes myself. That I’m able to live that experience and be an inspiration to others is extremely important.”

Dr. Gajraj’s family, who emigrated from Guyana to the U.S. in the '70s, has been his greatest source of inspiration, motivating him to pursue his dreams and reach new heights. Their unwavering support and values fueled his determination to succeed.

Gajraj reflects, "From a young age, my mom instilled the importance of a quality education, making the most of academics, and attending school every day. My dad

started a business from nothing and built one of the largest shipping companies in the Caribbean for import and export. Because of his perseverance and remarkable achievement, I gained a great deal of knowledge regarding work ethics and business. Additionally, as my grandparents' first-born grandchild, they frequently discussed the American Dream. I was their American Dream, and although they have passed, having completed my PhD, I really wish they were here to see that, because I feel like that was a huge part of me, and I’m proud to be that American Dream for them.”

Recently, Dr. Gajraj was appointed Senior Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer at CAN Community Health. As a marketing and communications leader with more than 20 years of experience encompassing healthcare, education, entertainment, and retail, Dr. Gajraj will lead CAN Community Health’s marketing and communications strategy to support national initiatives, brand development, and public engagement to serve humanity as the leading resource for education, prevention, and quality care.

“I’m excited to join CAN Community Health because their whole mission is about creating an inclusive environment that treats all individuals with respect and dignity regardless of their health issues,” comments Dr. Gajraj.

CAN started as the Community AIDS Network and has grown from just prevention for HIV and AIDS to prevention for epidemics across the board. Dr. Gajraj notes, “I really focus on the education part; the knowledge and awareness to not only break down the barriers and shatter stereotypes, but also to create a united front against this stigma.”

Gajraj adds, “There’s a lot of advocacy work, collaboration, and innovation, and we strive to do that with all of our clinics and the healthcare we provide. Being able to work for an organization that believes in acceptance, understanding, and overall unwavering support is so important for those affected by any infectious disease. I’m proud of the work we do that helps people live a much longer and healthier life.”

“It’s about us providing inclusive care to the community overall. It’s not only about creating unity behind the advocacy work that we do but also about access to the

right healthcare. Healthcare is super important in this day and age, and at whatever age you are, whatever socioeconomic level you’re in, everyone should have access to some type of healthcare.”

CAN Community Health provides a plethora of services to their patients, including comprehensive care, medical care, dental services, counseling, therapy, case management, education, peer support, and pharmacy. Headquartered in Tampa, Florida, CAN Community Health operates 40 clinics across Arizona, Florida, Nevada, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia.

Mental Health at the Heart of HIV Prevention and Care

Looking back, it’s incredible to see how far we’ve come since the 1980s. What was once a terrifying and often fatal diagnosis has transformed thanks to advances like modern antiretroviral therapies and PrEP. But as we make strides in HIV prevention and treatment, one aspect remains central to our work: mental health.

For those living with or at risk for HIV, mental health challenges can make every step harder—from accessing care to sticking with treatment. Anxiety, depression, stigma, and isolation are all too common. At SunServe, we believe that caring for mental health is at the core of managing HIV and preventing new infections. We’ve seen firsthand how supporting someone's mental and emotional well-being can change everything.

Our programs revolve around this belief. We offer counseling, support groups, and therapy tailored to each person's unique needs. Our goal is simple: to help people find their strength, resilience, and community. We know that mental health is the foundation upon which every other aspect of care rests. That’s why we work so hard to ensure everyone has access to compassionate, inclusive support.

Our affiliation with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation allows us to connect our clients seamlessly to medical care. But it’s our mental health services that drive what we do daily. When people feel mentally strong, they’re empowered to prioritize their health and embrace the fulfilling lives they truly deserve.

We’re also honored to be a part of AHF’s Florida AIDS Walk 2025, held every spring on Fort Lauderdale Beach. This event unites our community to raise essential funds for local HIV-related nonprofits. The matching donations from the AIDS Healthcare Foundation mean every dollar makes an even bigger difference, helping us continue our mission and expand our reach.

At SunServe, our team of mental health clinicians and social service professionals is dedicated to ensuring no one feels alone on their journey. We’re proud of the work we do and the lives we touch. But we also know there’s much more to be done.

Join us in the fight!. Learn how you can help by visiting SunServe.org/FAW. Together, we can build a stronger, healthier future for everyone.

EMBRACE THE CHANGE with Genesis Health Institute

Transform Your Skin with Halo and BBL

As the weather cools down and we experience our first “cold front” in South Florida, I can’t help but reflect on how far I’ve already come this year. Just like nature, we have the power to renew and transform ourselves. For me, that journey began with Genesis Health Institute’s Halo Laser and BBL treatments.

Revolutionary Treatments

For a while I’d been conscious of the way my skin looked—dull, uneven textured and the inevitable signs of aging were creeping in. But something about the change of seasons inspired me to make a change myself, and that’s when I discovered Dr. Cabrera and his team at Genesis Health Institute. They understood how I felt about my skin and introduced me to Halo and BBL (Broadband Light). These revolutionary treatments didn’t just revitalize my skin; they gave me back the confidence I hadn’t realized I’d lost. My complexion became smoother, my skin tone became even, and I felt years younger overall.

How Halo and BBL Work

Halo Laser Treatment works deep beneath the surface to erase years of damage caused by sun exposure and time, while the BBL treatment targets redness and pigmentation and enhances the skin’s natural glow. Together, they’re the ultimate duo for anyone wanting to renew their look, and let me tell you, the results are stunning!

Unretouched photos. Halo patient three months after one treatment.

The cooler temperature in South Florida brings transformation—a chance to shed the old and embrace your new, vibrant version. Like the changing weather, you can brighten, refresh, and rejuvenate your skin. There’s no better time than now to experience what Halo and BBL can do for you.

Start Here

Whether you’re ready to book your treatment or want to learn more, Genesis Health Institute is here to guide you through your transformation. Call them at 954-561-3175 to book your consultation. Trust me—your skin will thank you for it.

Food Bazaar Connects Community with Dishes Prepared from the Heart

Get ready to join one of the area’s most popular annual events. On Friday, October 18, 2024, South Florida’s premier community-based health clinic, Latinos Salud, will host its 12th annual Hispanic Heritage Food Bazaar.

Each year, the event draws 300 community members who savor homemade foods from a dozen different countries in the Hispanic diaspora, while also enjoying entertainment and dancing under the stars, right in the back parking lot at Latinos Salud’s Wilton Manors location.

This isn’t a food truck event or a food festival with restaurants selling samples. The dishes at the Food

Bazaar are prepared from the heart by the staff and members of Latinos Salud, who also create their own decorations and costumes, vying to win the judges’ nod for the contest prizes each year.

You might know the huge impact that Latinos Salud has had on community health. In addition to their awardwinning work in HIV prevention and testing, Latinos Salud’s rapid responses to the COVID-19, monkeypox, and meningitis outbreaks protected thousands in our local LGBT population. Latinos Salud was often the first clinic in each county to secure and deploy vaccines, which it offers (with appointment) throughout its operating hours until 9 PM nightly.

The agency’s friendly staff have also initiated over 5,000 community members on PrEP – the pill (or injection) that prevents HIV. The agency’s Wellness Navigators help patients navigate insurance or get free medication through patient assistance programs. The agency even pays the monthly health insurance premiums for hundreds of its patients in greatest financial need.

The Food Bazaar allows community members to enjoy a memorable night on the town and support the agency’s vital health programs at the same time. Each year, Latinos Salud’s Food Bazaar event kicks off the fundraising season for the agency. As a beneficiary of AHF’s Florida

AIDS Walk, all funds collected at the Food Bazaar and other events earn a match, helping the agency to offer more free community health education, screening, PrEP, vaccinations, and healthcare.

The Hispanic Heritage Food Bazaar is open to all, and Latinos Salud is holding regular tickets at just $15 for food and entry, with VIP tickets at just $25, including more drink coupons.

Advance registration gets you in the door fast, so you can dive into delectable cuisine, see old friends, and make new ones.

Ticketing opens in early October. Scan the QR Code or Visit Latinos Salud’s webpage to get your ticket.

Stop Wasting Your Time on Men Who Don’t Care

So, Why Are Unavailable Men So Attractive?

Let’s be real—there’s something incredibly intoxicating about the mystery and unpredictability of an unavailable man. It’s like trying to solve a puzzle, and who doesn’t love a good challenge? Plus, there's this thrill in chasing what seems just out of reach, right? It’s the whole “forbidden fruit” thing. The less we can have it, the more we want it. We often get caught up in fantasies, imagining a perfect relationship with someone who’s hard to get—because if we finally “win” them over, it’ll all be worth it. Or will it?

Why Do We Keep Chasing Them?

Here’s the thing—many of us grew up in environments where love and validation were conditional. Maybe you were always trying to win someone’s approval, whether it was your family, peers, or society at large. That kind of upbringing can make us seek out partners who play hard to get because it feels familiar, even if it’s not healthy. It’s like you’re subconsciously replaying those old patterns, thinking, “If they finally see me for who I am, I’ll be complete.” But here’s the truth—real validation comes from within. Chasing unavailable men often keeps us safe from confronting our deeper fears about intimacy

www.TheCoachDanny.com

and vulnerability. It’s a distraction, and one that can keep us stuck.

How Can You Spot an Emotionally Unavailable Man?

1. Inconsistency: One minute he's all in, the next he's gone.

2. Avoiding the Future: He shies away from talking about long-term plans.

3. Poor Communication: If he's not trying to stay connected, that's a big red flag.

How Do You Break the Cycle?

1. Self-awareness: Take a good look at your past relationships. What drew you to these men? What were you hoping they’d fulfill?

2. Set Boundaries: Be clear about your needs. If someone can’t or won’t meet them, it’s okay to walk away.

3. Patience: Change doesn’t happen overnight, but each step forward is progress.

4. Lean on Your Support System: Surround yourself with friends and mentors who encourage healthier choices. Listen to those who have your best interest at heart.

Alan Beck We’d Get Lost Without Him

Alan Beck, who has lived for 86 admirable years, was recently honored for his work in LGBTQ+ tourism with a Lifetime Achievement Award bestowed by the “Florida Out Coast Convention.” He tells the story of his achievements with endearing humility and honesty.

“I took the EST training [Erhard Training Seminars] sometime in the '70s. It gave me a deepening of the way I lived my life. At the end of the training, participants are supposed to have an ‘Aha’ moment. Mine was that I am not a victim, and that I am in control of my life.”

Armed with this realization, Beck set aside fear and trusted himself as he built a succession of businesses that experienced all the ups and downs successful people will tell you to expect along the way. He started a company called “Columbia Marketing Corporation,” primarily serving Chambers of Commerce, major corporations, and real estate companies. Meanwhile, in 1982, the David James Press, Ltd. began producing printed maps and guides for the lesbian and gay community. Beck’s product was called “Fun Maps,” which appealed to Jeffrey Goodman, the third publisher of the David James Press. Beck sold Goodman the rights to the Fun Maps name. (At the start of the dotcom era, Goodman smartly combined the two words into “FunMaps.”)

Goodman had difficulties making his venture profitable. In 1992, he offered to sell it to Beck, whose business was thriving. Beck declined but was eventually persuaded to take over the company by its two primary FunMaps sales agents, Matt Mathrani and Alden Thayer. Beck describes the harrowing experience of that acquisition, saying, “Matt and Alden really wanted to continue serving the community. I figured FunMaps would be a good adjunct to Columbia, so I made it a subsidiary. I acquired all their printed maps stored in the warehouse. In six months, I was turning a profit. I diverted my attention from my other Columbia clients to this one business. It became my life’s work from 1994 on. In 2015, I sold the company to Multimedia Platforms, Inc. I sold it mainly for stock ownership in the new company for $3,250,000. I got one or two cash payments, and then was blocked from selling the stock. I lost everything. I took an interim position as a manager of Wolf's bar in the Chardee space in Wilton Manors. I invested money into the bar, got burned again, but came out okay. In 2018, I founded “Fun Travel Guides,” knowing I could succeed with this business model as I had previously. That year, I also broke a hip and got married! Then COVID hit.”

Beck’s life partner is Broward College History & Ceramics professor Nicholas Starr. Although they met in New York

City 42 years ago, Beck’s personal life has been as colorful as his business life. In line with his EST wisdom, he speaks without anger when he describes his additional marriages.

“Before Nick, I had three relationships, each lasting seven years. When I was having trouble with my first wife, I suggested we go to my doctor. He suggested I see a therapist, and my wife began an affair with that doctor. When I was out of town, she called asking how to use our fireplace, something she would never do, unless... I drove home to find her with him. I got a divorce. I then had a seven-year relationship with a wonderful man, Ken Adams, on the down-low. I had another seven-year marriage to a woman before I realized my true identity and sought a divorce. I have children and grandchildren from my marriages to women. My marriage to Nick has broken the ‘seven-year curse.’”

There is much more to the Alan Beck story, including his time as editor of the school paper at Columbia High in Maplewood, New Jersey, his work on the school

publication at Lehigh University where he obtained a BA in Finance and Marketing, his time in ROTC and the Reserves leading to an honorable discharge as a First Lieutenant, his employment as sales manager at his father’s auto upholstery company, his acquisition of the “American Zephyr Railroad,” a private railroad passenger car company domiciled in DC, and his coming to terms with his Jewish upbringing and his teenage realization of his sexuality during a youthful romance with a male friend. He is currently Vice-Chair of the Stonewall National Museum, Archives & Library in Fort Lauderdale.

Beck is now planning to transition his “FunTravelGuides. com” back into “FunMaps.” He does not pretend to know the future of print, but he is building his presence online.

Those fortunate enough to have worked for Alan Beck describe him as an extremely trusting man, occasionally to his own detriment. Despite sometimes misplacing his trust in others, he has never become cynical, saying, “My mantra is to leave the world a better place for humanity.”

Men’s Fall/Winter 2024 Fashion Show

It’s a story of joy of life, of passion, of humanity, of people, of real life, of irreverent glamour, of provocation, of confidence, of simplicity, of immediate feelings and emotions, of a specific type of art, of words - words in artworks, words in pictures, words in spaces, just words. A story of richness and lust/desire, of red but also blue and green, of flash, of spontaneity, of light, of a party at the first light of day, it’s an unhidden story, one that’s proud, it is manifest and not taboo although it might look like it should be, it is completely free and filled with euphoria. It is a story of fabulous, diverse people; it’s Getty images of cool people of all ages, and it’s inclusive as in everyone is welcomed. It’s a story of movies, of my beloved Italy, of intellectuals and travels around the world but still feeling at home wherever you are. A story of objects - shiny, tactile and cold to the touch but warm to the heart and soul, these are desirable to collect, not for a museum but to enrich everyday life. It’s a story of music and nights out, of sweat, dancing, and singing. It’s a story of family, of kissing, lots and lots of kisses. It’s a story of everything, again, but this time expressed through joy. - Sabato De Sarno

Makes History While Forging Ahead

A Connecticut native who has practiced law in Broward County since 1980, he made history in 2018 - becoming Fort Lauderdale’s first openly gay mayor. Known for his affable demeanor, dedication to equal rights, and a passion for public service, he hopes to continue to serve the city he calls home with a final term as mayor. Meet Mayor Dean Trantalis, who is running for reelection in November.

Dr. Fitzgerald: What does it take to be a leader of a city like Fort Lauderdale?

Mayor Trantalis: First, it’s a great honor to be a leader of Fort Lauderdale. It’s an emerging city. It’s a very modern city and it’s becoming a very cosmopolitan city. It’s had its challenges in terms of natural disasters, such as COVID and unprecedented rainfalls and self-inflicted challenges like neglect of our infrastructure. We had large water breaks and sewer breaks that not only brought disrepute upon the city, but also contaminated many of our waterways. We've since recovered and learned from those. And I think we've become a better city. As a result, we're much more conscious of our natural resources. The city has moved forward with a program called Fortify Lauderdale, which is intended to fast forward all our infrastructure programs in terms of storm water recovery. We're also building a brand-new water treatment plant.

We're just moving forward and trying to build a city that many people want to be a part. We've seen some significant development in our central city downtown. We've added over 3,200 jobs in Fort Lauderdale just this past year alone. And people want to move to Fort Lauderdale. It's a great place to live, a great place to work, and even start a career and build a family. So, along with that we've done some quality-of-life initiatives that I think are important to the LGBT community in particular. During my time as Mayor of Fort Lauderdale, we adopted an equal rights ordinance on its own—protecting people, based on gender equality and sexual orientation. We also were one of the few cities in Florida to outlaw conversion therapy, and that law remains on our books.

We continue to try to attract diversity within our city. We're very proud of the diversity that we experience here on a day-to-day basis. People from all over the world come here because they love what we have here. My goal has always been to create new economic opportunities. Fort Lauderdale is known for our hospitality industry and our marine industry. We are also the yachting capital of the world. But that’s not sustainable. We learned through

COVID that you cannot rely on one industry to keep you going. So, these last few years I've reached out to other industries to try to bring a more diverse economic base to our city. And we're starting to see more and more of that. We’re starting to see financial services and tech industries, even entertainment. We just had the groundbreaking for a new motion picture studio here in Fort Lauderdale that’s going to bring hundreds, yes, hundreds of new jobs in the filmmaking industry, but also in the trades like carpentry, electricians, and all of that. We will be able to source that employment through the neighborhood providing everybody an opportunity to take part in this growth.

Dr. Fitzgerald: You are often faced with making some big decisions and sometimes not everyone is going to be happy with the result. How do you address that?

Mayor Trantalis: The first thing is to listen to the people. Hear their voices, what opinions do they have, what’s the basis for their opinions. And then you sort through all of that, finding out what’s fact, what’s emotion, and what is the goal. Once you see a clear path to the goal then it’s easy to make that decision and move forward on to what must be done.

Dr. Fitzgerald: How would you describe the role and responsibilities of the mayor of Fort Lauderdale?

Mayor Trantalis: It’s very complex. Technically and legally, the only purpose for a mayor is to run the meetings and to serve as the spokesperson for the city on issues relating to the city. But in reality, there's much more to it. I mean, it's what you want to make of it. I've made a lot more of this job prior to my predecessors, but my predecessor made more of the job than his predecessor. So, we each build and expand the role of mayor. I've often been a mediator when there is conflict. I've helped set the tone and direction of the city along with my fellow commissioners, and I keep the atmosphere and the mood of the city as very positive and collaborative. You know, too often, as you said, there are divergent opinions, and that can often be distracting, because sometimes they're riddled with emotion rather than competing facts. So, you need to cut through all of that to figure out what is real and what's not. So being the mediator of emotions and opinions is probably one of the most time-consuming parts of this job.

Dr. Fitzgerald: What makes Fort Lauderdale a great place to live?

Mayor Trantalis: I think the greatest thing about Fort Lauderdale is the people that live here. The diversity of our population. People coming from all walks of life,

contributing their ideas, their cultures, their foods, their experiences. And then what we've done as a city is, we've been able to create a vibrant downtown where people can live and work with everything within walking distance and it’s something that we never even thought about 20 years ago when I first became a city commissioner. The downtown wasn't really an issue. The issue back then was what was happening on the beach. But we've done quite a bit on the beach. We've created a world class destination. And I think that people come to experience what we have here. I meet people from the Middle East, Canada and South America. They love coming to Fort Lauderdale because it's a place where they can feel comfortable. It's very family friendly and they don't feel out of place here. Everyone has a place to feel comfortable. At the same time, we've maintained the integrity of our single-family home neighborhoods, making sure there are no intrusions into their quality of life, and ensuring that they're safe, that we continue to build infrastructure in and around them in order to secure their comfort level.

I have spent a lot of time trying to bring in people who have come to our city looking to invest in terms of sports and recreational facilities. An example of that is our soccer stadium Inter Miami came to Fort Lauderdale. In our city we have probably one of the best stadiums in the country for soccer and they spent over $170 million building a soccer stadium, building a high school football stadium for the two high schools that don't have football, and practice fields for the young academy they have for rising soccer stars. We also met with the Panthers who built this magnificent ice-skating complex called the Baptist Health IcePlex here in Holiday Park. It’s an ice-skating rink exclusively for practice for the team, but also includes one that's completely open to the public for daytime and nighttime use seven days of the week. It's drawn hundreds and hundreds of kids and their parents, and what better way to get out of the heat than to go into an ice-skating rink? It's been very, very successful.

After many, many years of trying, we finally were able to complete the redesign and redevelopment of our swimming complex. We have a world-class destination venue for swimming. It's open to the public seven days a week, and it's also there for swimming as well as diving competitions. We have the only 27-meter diving platform in this part of the world, so we are very excited about that. We're also about to complete, probably the best and most sophisticated pickleball venue in the country. It's going

to have 44 pickleball courts as well as a clubhouse for members who wish to join. It's going to be a magnificent new place, and it's all paid for by private investors.

We’ve also partnered with the Orange Bowl Committee, and they're going to invest $1.5 million to redesign part of the tennis courts at Holiday Park. They're building a small stadium for competition and viewing and also refurbishing all of the tennis courts at Holiday Park

Dr. Fitzgerald: What’s your vision for the city going forward?

Mayor Trantalis: My vision going forward is to continue the pace. Continue the opportunities that we have before us. We must ensure that our infrastructure programs continue unabated. We have a new City Hall that we're looking to build over the next several years. I want to make sure that some of the projects we got started on are brought to a successful conclusion, and, again, just fashioning the downtown with smart growth policies to ensure the integrity and sustainability of our city going forward.

Dr. Fitzgerald: How would you describe your tenure as mayor so far?

Mayor Trantalis: I’ve really enjoyed being mayor and I want to continue with one more term. This will be my last term, and I want to spend the next four years mentoring younger people into decision-making roles. I think the city is ready for that and it’s time to pass the baton on to others. My role since taking office has been to embrace change, to attack challenges that we have neglected, like our infrastructure, and trying to ensure that people have the quality of life that they expect provided, in some small part, by the community leaders that they elect year after year.

Dr. Fitzgerald: What are you most proud of and why?

Mayor Trantalis: I think what I'm most proud of is having changed the mood of the city since I became elected. People are not looking at Fort Lauderdale as a second or third choice. People are looking at the city as a firstchoice option for deciding where they want to live, where they want to start their business or start a family. That attitude didn't exist before I became mayor. For a while it was a disappointment to people. It was just not keeping up with the 21st century vibes that other cities were experiencing. I think I changed that. With me and the other commissioners and the city managers that we chose over the years, we were able to move that piece forward, and I think it has worked out well.

The Season of Creation

As summer comes to a close, walking around my neighborhood in the evening becomes more and more pleasant with each passing day. The cooler weather means my walks can be more like strolls, as I enjoy the gentle breeze and take in the beauty of our South Florida landscape.

We are indeed blessed to call this garden our home. There is nothing like a Royal Poinciana in full bloom, a flock of ibises on the front lawn, the sound of the Atlantic’s waves lapping against the shoreline, or the taste of mango fresh from the tree. The beauty of our created world is indeed something to be grateful for.

During September, many churches celebrate the Season of Creation. This is a time in which we honor the wonders of the natural world and our work to protect it all. The season ends on October 4, which happens to be the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi who is the patron saint of animals and the environment. If you’ve ever seen a statue of St. Francis, you probably noticed the birds on his shoulder and in his palm, as well as the animals gathering around his feet.

My church has been celebrating this season for the past month and I’ve been inspired not only by their stories of nature but also their commitment to protect the environment. In the second story of creation in the book of Genesis (yes, there are two of them!) God tells humans to work the land and protect it. We are called to be keepers of this Garden Earth, making sure it is nourished and cared for.

I hope that this fall you will find ways to enjoy our beautiful habitat here in South Florida! And even more so, that you will do your part in protecting this creation that we call our home.

Peace and love, Pastor Aaron

We are Open and Affirming!

Holy, Queer October

October is the month that gives us National Coming Out Day. It is the month when Matthew Shepard was killed, and of course, it brings us Halloween. October is also a month to celebrate Queer heroes, martyrs, and saints.

October 4 commemorates St. Francis of Assisi. There are traditions that suggest that some of his friends called him “Mother.” He called a friend assigned female at birth, “Brother Jacoba,” and he had a vision of the Trinity as being female. Even in the Thirteenth century, Francis was not limited by prescribed binaries.

October 6, 1968, is the date that a gay, defrocked Pentecostal minister, Troy D. Perry, started Metropolitan Community Churches (MCC), an LGBTQ+ affirming faith movement.

October 7 is the feast day of Saints Sergius and Bacchus who some historians believe were lovers. They were martyred in the third century for their faith, not their relationship. Bacchus died before Sergius and appeared to him in a vision to say that they would be reunited in heaven.

And October 10 is a feast day in the Episcopal Church for Vida Dutton Scudder (1861 – 1954), a college professor who participated in the Social Gospel and Christian Socialism movements. She lived with another woman, Florence Converse, for 35 years.

May the memories of our LGBTQ+ forebears bless and inspire us always.

Author Charles Baran Finds Mystery in Wilton Manors

Charles Baran’s debut novel, Rhoda Rage and the Goldfish Letter, set in and around Wilton Manors, has all the trappings of a gripping whodunit – engaging characters, colorful locations, and exciting situations that are based, if not so much on reality, on a joyful fantasy of a diverse community that works together, plays together, and . . . solves mysteries together. Last month, the protagonist of the novel, drag superstar Rhoda Rage, had a chance to interrupt Charles’ work on book number two, Rhoda Rage and the Prickly Situation, to find out how a former Fire Island houseboy, hotel manager, interior design professional and full-time actor, became a published author.

Rhoda Rage: Hello Charlie. May I call you Charlie?

Charles Baran: You always do.

Rhoda Rage: Congratulations on the publication of your first novel. I’ve been hearing great things about it.

Charles Baran: Thank you, Rhoda. It’s been exciting to say the least.

Rhoda Rage: Where are you from?

Charles Baran: I grew up in Elmhurst, Queens in the 60’s and 70’s. A one-hundred-percent Polish family in Archie Bunker-land. Everything was covered in plastic including the fine china. Every piece was in its own zip-lock bag!

Rhoda Rage: You’ve led a very adventurous life. Give us a little background.

Charles Baran: Well, we can go way back to the summer of 1980 when I was a houseboy in a fabulous house on Neptune Walk in the Pines. I cooked, cleaned and scrubbed the floors for five guys who were really terrific. And I did it all while wearing a Patricia Field hot pink tutu and a pair of glittery heels. It was an amazing time. Claudette Colbert used to visit the house next door. 1980. That was the last summer before AIDS hit. The next year, well, everything changed.

Rhoda Rage: What did you do after Fire Island?

Charles Baran: When I got back to my 200 square foot apartment on West 85th Street, my world crumbled. With

no job, no money, I was desperate. I called my friend Tex in Key West and cried. He told me to pack my heels and my Morticia Addams tube-top and get down to Duval Street! So, I did. I made sandwiches at La Bodega on Simonton. Then I climbed the Key West ladder to success and became a busboy at La Te Da. That was a BIG step up. Although AIDS loomed in the background, it wasn’t consuming our lives. No one knew anyone who had died . . . yet. We partied hard at The Monster and Delmonico’s and slept the day away on the Dick Dock Pier by the Casa Marina.

Rhoda Rage: Such stories! You should write a book!

Charles Baran: I have. It’s called Rhoda Rage and the Goldfish Letter

Rhoda Rage: And I’m in it!

Charles Baran: You most certainly are. It took me a year and a half to get you down on paper. I transformed you from a concept in my mind to a fabulous drag superstar doing nightly shows at the Alibi and solving mysteries with the handsome, and straight, Officer Phil.

Rhoda Rage: Is Officer Phil a real person?

Charles Baran: None of the people in RRATGL are real, but I have used many, many names of good friends throughout the book and turned them into waiters, doctors, EMT workers, bartenders, and what have you. So, someone reading this interview may just find themselves in the book!

Rhoda Rage: Let’s hope you don’t get sued!

Charles Baran: I don’t think so. I didn’t use last names.

Rhoda Rage: How fun. What’s the story about?

Charles Baran: One sunny Tuesday morning, the quiet streets of Wilton Manors are turned upside down by sweet old man Salvatore D’Angelo getting knocked down by a speeding red van while out walking his adorable Pomeranian, Gooch. Did I mention Sal’s a Jerry Herman fan? Huge! His home is a shrine. Anyway, at the same time as the hit-and-run, an unsavory character in a tan trench coat is seen unlocking the door to To The Moon gift shop,

directly behind which, is the home of beloved resident Big Molly who, minutes later, is found dead, slumped over her bacon and eggs which were just delivered from the Myth Gastrobar. Are all these occurrences connected? Well, you’ll just have to read the book and find out.

Rhoda Rage: And I solve the mystery, right?

Charles Baran: That’s right Rhoda. With the help of your four-pound toy fox terrier Wallie. Oh, and with the help of your BFF and occasional nemesis, Robin Kradles.

Rhoda Rage: You mean I have to share the spotlight with that queen?

Charles Baran: Don’t worry. Your bulb burns bright.

Rhoda Rage: How did you get published?

Charles Baran: I pitched the book last year at the Miami Book Fair to Line by Lion Publications. They asked for the first three chapters. Two days later they asked for the book. Three days later I was offered a deal.

Rhoda Rage: What are a few of the accolades you’ve, or should I say we’ve, received?

Charles Baran: Well, for starters, the legendary Charles Busch wrote, “Charles Baran’s debut comic murder mystery is outrageous, campy, bawdy and surprisingly endearing. He gives us a drag queen sleuth in Rhoda Rage as madcap as Mame and insightful as Miss Marple, maneuvering deftly through a South Florida maze of vividly drawn eccentric characters.” And our very own Michael McKeever said, “I adore this book. In it, Charles Baran displays a marvelous gift for mixing fabulous camp with intriguing thrills. Seen through the eyes of a series-worthy sleuth, the mystery unfolds with laughs, surprises and an awful lot of heart. A glorious exploration of life, death and all that glitters in between in Florida's gay capital, Wilton Manors.” Needless to say, I’m extremely happy.

Rhoda Rage: Where can people buy the book?

Charles Baran: It’s available on the publisher's website at PixelandPen.Studio and on Amazon plus several other book sellers across the country.

Rhoda Rage: You’re working on book two?

Charles Baran: Yes. I have a three-year contract with my publisher, and they have the right of first refusal. So, I’m typing away.

Rhoda Rage: What’s the new book about?

Charles Baran:: The second book is about a murder and a jewel heist that takes place in Cabanas Guest House. It’s called Rhoda Rage and the Prickly Situation

Rhoda Rage: Are all the locations in your books real?

Charles Baran: Every one. Well, truth be told, in RRATGL I made up the name of a drag bar in Miami, the Pickle and Spice. If it’s not the name of a drag bar somewhere on this planet, it should be. But that’s it. Every place else is real. The Sunshine Cathedral is mentioned Alibi. Rosie’s. Spencer’s Corner. Even Catfish Dewey’s and the old Versace Mansion in South Beach. And, of course, several of the chapters take place in To The Moon. I just love that place and wanted to celebrate it and set a story there.

Rhoda Rage: The book reminds me of Tales of the City Or a Netflix series!

Charles Baran: Thank you Rhoda. Let’s hope.

Rhoda Rage: Who are your inspirations?

Charles Baran: Bette Midler. I used to sit outside her apartment on Barrow Street every day after high school let out. I was 15 or 16. You could see right into her living room. I distinctly remember her blowing her nose. Yes, I am the original stalker! Also, Truman Capote. I’ve seen him at his worst on the dance floor of Studio 54. And John Waters. Female Trouble is my absolutely favorite movie. I think I’ve seen it thirty times and can almost recite the script verbatim. But my biggest inspiration will always be Joan Rivers. I met her when I worked at The Westbury Hotel in Manhattan. She lived there right after Edgar died and we became really good friends. I helped her learn her lines when she went into Broadway Bound. Her work ethic was unbelievable.

Rhoda Rage: Do you still act?

Charles Baran: Absolutely. I’m doing No, No Nanette in March at The Wick. It’s one of my favorite musicals! All that tapping. Luckily, I don’t have to do any of it! I play the older gentleman role, Jimmy Smith, Nanette’s ward and benefactor. The legendary Jack Gilford played him on Broadway, so I’m absolutely thrilled.

Rhoda Rage: Well, thank you Charlie for the great chat. I think I’ll go back into your laptop now.

Charles Baran: Thank you Rhoda! I’ll be seeing you on the pages of book two!

Gabe Salazar Announces Season 15 for GMCSF

Continuing its testament of strength and unity in the face of adversity, artistic director Gabe Salazar is proud to invite us all to the 15th season of the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida (GMCSF).

From their annual fundraiser to their holiday and Pride concerts, this season is focused on the theme of “SHOUT!

Let Your Voices Be Heard,” which is about amplifying the voices of our community, celebrating diversity, and using the power of music to inspire change. This theme is woven into every performance and event the GMCSF has planned, highlighting where they’ve come from and where they are going.

Salazar took some time to talk with OutClique about what else the GMCSF has in store, as well as how this vibrant and beloved group continues to evolve and make a difference.

Denny Patterson: How excited are you for the GMCSF’s upcoming 15th season?

Gabe Salazar: I'm incredibly excited about our 15thanniversary season! It's a milestone for the chorus and our entire community. The support and participation have been instrumental in our journey, and we have so much

planned that will celebrate our collective growth and our future. The energy within the chorus, fueled by the public's enthusiasm, is electrifying, and I can't wait for our audiences to experience what we've been working on.

Denny Patterson: Can you give us a rundown on what to expect and what this season includes?

Gabe Salazar: This season is a vibrant tapestry of powerful performances and special events catering to South Florida's diverse audience. We start with our annual fundraiser, The Chic & Unique Ball, at The Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort on November 2, 2024. Then, in December, we have our traditional Holiday Spectacular concerts at Sunshine Cathedral and Hard Rock Live. Our holiday concerts are always crowd favorites and will feature a guest artist, which is still to be determined. In March, we're thrilled to present Broadway Blockbusters, featuring some of the best-loved musical theater songs. Our Pride Concert in June will round out our mainstage concert season with a tribute to Dazzling Divas. It's going to be a season that truly showcases the versatility and heart of the chorus, with something for everyone. We'll also engage with the community throughout the season through events like our Community Sing-Along and celebrate our rich history with anniversary festivities.

Denny Patterson: What do you always hope audiences take away from a GMCSF production?

Gabe Salazar: I hope that audiences leave feeling uplifted, inspired, and connected. Our performances are about more than just the music; they tell stories that resonate with our community and reflect shared experiences. I want people to walk away feeling seen, heard, and empowered to be authentic.

Denny Patterson: You have been the GMCSF's artistic director since 2021. How would you say the chorus has evolved since you stepped into the role?

Gabe Salazar: Since becoming artistic director, I've seen the chorus evolve in artistry and outreach. We've broadened our repertoire, explored new themes, and deepened our engagement with the community. There's a greater sense of cohesion and purpose among the singers; our audiences feel that, too. We're continually pushing ourselves to grow and make a lasting impact.

Denny Patterson: How have you grown as an artistic leader since joining the GMCSF?

Gabe Salazar: Leading the Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida has been a transformative experience. I've grown in my ability to inspire and unite diverse voices. I've learned about balancing the creative vision with ensuring our work is accessible and meaningful to our community. We have an unwavering commitment to our mission of creating change through music. I am confident in our leadership and deeply committed to this cause.

Denny Patterson: Is there anything else you would like to mention or plug?

Gabe Salazar: I encourage everyone to join us for this monumental 15th-anniversary season. Whether you're a long-time supporter or someone attending for the first time, there's something extraordinary in store. Keep an eye out for information on our gala fundraiser, The Chic & Unique Ball, on November 2, 2024, and get ready to celebrate the joy and power of music with us!

Island City Stage’s Andy Rogow

Talks Season 13 Opener The Fantasticks

Are you ready to experience The Fantasticks like never before?

The longest-running musical worldwide has been given an extraordinary update by its original book writer, Tom Jones, giving audiences a heartwarming queer romance. This new LGBTQ+ rewrite now features two young gay men, Matt and Lewis (and their mothers), as the central story, exploring falling in love for the first time and selfdiscovery.

Island City Stage is the third theater in the country to perform this new version.

The Fantasticks will play October 17–November 17, 2024, and OutClique recently caught up with director Andy Rogow to talk more about it.

Denny Patterson: How excited are you for The Fantasticks to play at Island City Stage?

Andy Rogow: I'm very excited! We worked very hard to be able to do this version. We lobbied the publisher who holds the rights to the show to allow us to do it, so I'm very excited that they gave us permission. It's also great for me to revisit the show because, when I moved here 26 years ago, The Fantasticks was the first show I directed here.

Denny Patterson: This is a new LGBTQ+ rewrite that was made by the original book writer, Tom Jones. What can audiences expect?

Andy Rogow: If they've seen it before, they will recognize the story. Tom didn’t change anything about how the story is told, or the songs, style, and tone. He literally just did a little rewriting so that the female role could be made male. The love story is basically the same, and I think that was the point. It doesn't matter whether it's boy/girl or boy/boy. It’s how young people fall in love, the fantasies they have about love, and how parents can manipulate their children. That's all the same, no matter what the gender is.

Denny Patterson: And is there anything you ultimately hope they take away from this production?

Andy Rogow:I hope they come away with an appreciation of poetic storytelling and that they appreciate how wonderful this score is. So much of what's out there right now is pop, and this is a true musical theater score that is incredibly melodic with very clever lyrics. I think it truly celebrates traditional musical theater, and I hope people appreciate that.

Denny Patterson: Island City Stage is now the third theater in the country to perform this queer version. As the show’s director, what is your overall vision?

Andy Rogow: I wanted to make sure we honor the show’s original intent and that we tell the story as it was meant to be told. It's very old-fashioned. There's a lot of poetry in it, and a lot of the show is written in verse, but I also wanted to give audiences a reason as to why we were doing the same-sex version, other than just to do it as a gimmick. I’m not always in favor of that. I felt there needed to be a reason to tell it this way, so I am making it kind of a memory play. One of the characters remembers falling in love and their initial spark of romance.

Denny Patterson: Can you talk about how this new season celebrates and explores stories about families?

Andy Rogow: All of them explore a family relationship in some way or another, and they explore the challenges of being in a family. Sometimes we love those family members, sometimes we hate them, sometimes we can't be without them, and sometimes we want them to go far away. That's what we're exploring in these different shows. They all explore family in a little different way.

Denny Patterson: Was there a specific reason you made The Fantasticks the opener?

Andy Rogow: We have often opened with a musical. I think it just creates a lot of energy and excitement to start off the season.

OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Announces

Select Films for 42nd Edition

OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival, internationally acclaimed as one of the largest LGBTQ+ cultural festivals in the world, is excited to announce its 42nd edition fall dates, preview of featured films, and a new format designed to unite cinema enthusiasts from South Florida and beyond! For the first time in its event history, OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival will offer 62 acclaimed features and shorts, including premieres and documentaries from 25 countries that inspire, entertain, and educate, in theaters across both Broward and Miami-Dade counties during one run.

This year’s fall festival will open in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, October 17, at Regal Dania Pointe and will run through Thursday, October 24, at Paradigm Cinemas: Gateway Fort Lauderdale and Savor Cinema. From Friday, October 25, through Sunday, October 27, the festival will move to Silverspot Cinema Miami and Regal South Beach, followed by select screenings available from Monday, October 28, to Sunday, November 3, during the OUTshine AT HOME extension.

“We are thrilled to introduce the newly reimagined OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival to South Florida,” said Allen Martello, festival co-director, OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival. “Film is better with friends, and our vision is to bring our community together to celebrate inspiring LGBTQ+ cinema with a fall and a spring festival in Miami

and Fort Lauderdale. We’re also thrilled to welcome back FREE Uber rides to and from select film screenings in Miami, making it easier for our Fort Lauderdale neighbors to travel to Downtown Miami via rail. By connecting our community, we’re also adding on extra viewings, parties, and special events, increasing the festival’s run dates in theaters and at home.”

Young Hearts (Belgium/Netherlands, 2023) will open this year’s fall festival on Thursday, October 17, at 7 p.m., at Regal Dania Pointe. Written and directed by Anthony Schatteman in his feature debut, the film explores first love as 14-year-old Elias (Lou Goossens) contends with his feelings for Alex, a cool new neighbor. Exquisitely filmed in the Belgian countryside, this profound story resonates on multiple levels: a balm for those whose initial queer experiences were traumatic, a mirror for today’s LGBTQ+ youth, and a hopeful message for parents of future generations.

This year’s Centerpiece Film screening on October 24 at Savor Cinema will be the East Coast premiere of Hammarskjöld - Fight for Peace (Sweden, 2024), a speculative biopic about Swedish UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld, the anti-colonialist, allegedly queer diplomat who died under mysterious circumstances during the Cold War while trying to bring peace to the Congo.

Back by popular demand is the festival’s Latin Spotlight set to take place on October 25 at Silverspot Cinema Miami. The fall edition’s selections are The Astronaut Lovers (Los Amantes Astronautas) (Argentina/Spain, 2024) and the North American premiere of The Muleteer (La Arriera) (Mexico, 2024). Directed by Marco Berger, The Astronaut Lovers is a comedy about Pedro and Maxi, childhood friends reuniting as young men who fall in love and comically try to hide it from family and friends. In The Muleteer, director Isabel Cristina Fregoso presents a compelling 1930s narrative about daring teenage Emilia, who ventures out to find her biological father. Riding her horse through the mountains, where she pretends to be a young muleteer, she discovers a different world that leads her to find her destiny.

Additional selections of note include High Tide (United States, 2024), a moving tale of a gay immigrant in Provincetown navigating the gig economy after an unexpected breakup; Drive Back Home (Canada, 2024), a brotherly road trip drama taking place in 1970 starring Alan Cumming; All Shall Be Well (Hong Kong, 2024), director Ray Yeung’s Teddy Award-winning film exploring family dynamics, unraveling relationships, and the complexities of Hong Kong’s inheritance laws; the award-winning Pet Shop Days (USA/Italy/Mexico/UK, 2023), director Olmo Schnabel’s gritty throwback to American independent cinema with a riveting portrait of lost young men seeking connection, featuring fantastic performances (including Willem Dafoe), raw emotion, and propulsive pacing; and

the documentaries Linda Perry: Let It Die Here (United States, 2024) and Sapir (Israel, 2024), an engrossing portrait of the world’s first professional league transgender football referee, Sapir Berman.

Focusing on local LGBTQ+ filmmaking talent, OUTshine has curated a new South Florida Shorts program and will present its Filmmaker Panel during the festival run. “Film lovers can expect a lineup of international, North American, U.S., and East Coast premieres stacked with notable award-winning and up-and-coming directors, actors, and writers sharing creative visions and personal experiences that excite, exhilarate, and uplift the human spirit,” said Joe Bilancio, director of programming, OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival.

OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival’s fall edition closes at Regal Cinemas South Beach with the film LAYLA (UK, 2024). Written and directed by Amrou Al-Kadhi, the film focuses on Layla, a struggling Arab non-binary drag queen whose confident façade hides their desperate desire for love. When Layla’s performance at a belittling corporate Pride event turns into a transgressive takedown, they are surprised to catch the eye of marketing executive Max, whose attentions sweep Layla off their feet. As Layla starts to alter who they are in order to keep Max’s interest, they both must face uncomfortable truths. Immediately following, a celebratory Closing Night Party will take place on historic Lincoln Road.

It is one of 13 institutions across the country to share $510,000 in NASA Community Anchor Award funds.

“We are over the moon to have been awarded this prestigious NASA grant,” said Joseph P. Cox, president and CEO of MODS. “This funding will allow us to increase Museum access and offer inquiry-based learning experiences for underrepresented youth via MODS STEM outreach efforts at no cost.”

MODS’ Community Anchor Award programming will impact 500 learners by providing two STEMobile outreach programs with a NASA-driven curriculum and one mobile GeoDome planetarium program. Fifty additional students will participate in a Kennedy Space Center field trip to explore the facility and engage with NASA.

MODS will partner with Title I schools in low-income zip codes to deliver programs to youth most in need including girls, minorities and low-income youth.

Outreach programs will be delivered by trained MODS STEM educators via the MODS STEMobile, which delivers project-based learning experiences to 75,000 learners annually across Broward County – 90% of which are delivered at no cost to low-income and underserved youth. All programs follow the Authentic STEM Experience (ASE) framework, actively engaging youth in collaborative, developmentally appropriate experiences that generate real-world understanding.

“We’re excited to grow the community of informal education organizations through these awards,” said Torry Johnson, deputy associate administrator of STEM Engagement Programs at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “These organizations bring the excitement of STEM and spaceflight to students where they are, helping us inspire the Artemis Generation of future explorers and innovators.”

Just in time for Halloween, Slow Burn Theatre Company’s 2024/2025 Season supported by American National Bank opens in the Amaturo Theater with The Witches of Eastwick Saturday, October 19 – Sunday November 3, 2024, including an open-captioned performance on Sunday, October 27 at 2 p.m.

The original West End production was nominated for an Olivier Award for Best New Musical and is based on the 1984 novel of the same name by John Updike and the basis for the 1987 film starring Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer. In the tiny New England town of Eastwick, three modern day witches innocently plot and conjure over a heady brew of weak martinis and peanut butter brownies. But all hell breaks loose when their shared desire for “all manner of man in one man” arrives in the form of charismatic stranger Darryl Van Horne. The musical has book and lyrics by John Dempsey and music by Dana P. Rowe, the creative team behind Zombie Prom and The Fix. Performance times vary.

Theater Up Close Returns with The Pillowman

The Adrienne Arsht Center (@arshtcenter) and Zoetic Stage (@zoeticstagemia) are proud to kick off the 20242025 Theater Up Close season with Martin McDonagh’s haunting dark comedy The Pillowman. After wildly successful productions of Frankenstein in 2021 and Dracula in 2018, the Miami-based theater company returns to the horror genre with this thought-provoking drama that blends horror, comedy and psychological tension. Audiences will experience the drama up close and in the round in the Carnival Studio Theater.

"Martin McDonagh's The Pillowman is a modern-day classic, celebrated throughout the world as a play that is as haunting as it is challenging and funny,” said Zoetic Stage Artistic Director Stuart Meltzer. “I am not only

excited to open the 2024/25 Theatre Up Close series with this award-winning play, but to also celebrate Zoetic Stage's 15th anniversary season!"

With echoes of Stoppard, Kafka and the Brothers Grimm, this modern classic centers on a writer in an unnamed totalitarian state who is being interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a series of child murders. The result is an urgent work of theatrical bravura and an unflinching examination of the very nature and purpose of art.

The Pillowman features an all-local cast of award-winning actors, including Ryan Didato, Michael McKeever, Gabriell Salgado and Seth Trucks.

Glitter and Be Gay at the GMCSF’s Chic and Unique Ball

If you’re a fan of sparkly things that smack of luxury and opulence, (like I am), then the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida’s Chic and Unique Ball at The Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort on Saturday, November 2, 2024, is the place to be! Appropriately subtitled: Crystal Opulence Unleashed, the evening promises to dazzle even the most been-there-donethat partygoer among us. And as well it should! The GMCSF has a lot to celebrate these days. Last year’s 14th season was a smashing success with the spectacular Hooray for Hollywood concert at The Parker Playhouse, followed by the exceptional multigenerational concert Pride: Then, Now and Forever in June which featured iconic gay anthems alongside a world premier commissioned exclusively for the GMCSF, We’ve Come Through the Storm by Tom Nichols and Dan Chadburn. Whatever the GMCSF does, they do it with style, charm and a whole lot of pizazzzzz.

That’s why I’m so excited about the upcoming Chic and Unique Ball and can’t wait to attend. The crystal themed gala fundraiser, co-sponsored by the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Hollywood and The Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, will be a fully immersive experience, with every corner of the Westin outfitted in glittering elegance. Think Palace of Versailles with an LGBTQ twist!

Last year’s Chic and Unique Ball: A Red-Carpet Extravaganza was such a hit, that the newly elected Chorus President and Ball Co-Chair, Jonathan Sanz felt compelled to “build on that success and create an even more fabulous night.” Sanz guarantees that, “From the dazzling entertainment to the exclusive VIP experiences, The Chic & Unique Ball will be an unforgettable evening that supports the essential work of the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida."

The evening begins at 7 p.m. General admission tickets are $200 per person and will include fine food, live entertainment by Vibe City Music & Entertainment, a robust live auction, a bountiful silent auction, a post-event dance party with a live band and special surprises throughout the night. Tables are available for $2,000. If you’re looking to “up the glam” experience factor, a limited number of VIP tickets are available at $500 and include a pre and post event private reception. Keep in mind, your ticket purchase goes to help support this South Florida treasure of a quality volunteer organization that through music inspires audiences and affirms our common humanity. The GMCSF’s official mission is “to sing so that LGBTQ+ people can live their truth through quality music experiences. Our vision—a diverse world united.” And that’s certainly worth supporting.

Paige Turner

Brings the Power of Drag and Disney to Sunshine Cathedral

Get ready to wish upon a drag star!

New York City’s most recognizable blonde bombshell

Paige Turner is inviting audiences to join her as she makes her South Florida debut with a magical new show titled The Wonderful World of Drag, playing at Sunshine Cathedral November 8, 2024. Hop on and take a ride with Turner through her Magic Queendom in this live singing parody fantasia celebrating 100 years of “DIZNEE,” where she will take on a whole new world of classic songs from all your favorites, like Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins, and more.

Turner took some time to talk more about her upcoming engagement with OutClique

Denny Patterson: Thank you for taking some time to chat with me, Paige! How excited are you to make your South Florida debut at Sunshine Cathedral?

Paige Turner: To be completely honest, I was a little nervous at first because of all the drag controversy, and I’m performing the Friday after the election. I was like, "What have I done?" (Laughs) But that has dissipated, and I’m excited. I kept seeing things for Sunshine Cathedral, and I was like, "What is this place?" Then it turned out that almost every other singer, entertainer, drag queen, and cabaret performer I have ever associated myself with either knew or heard of Sunshine Cathedral. A big goal of mine is to branch out to new places, so I reached out. They responded saying, "Oh my gosh, we totally know who you are! We’ll totally book you!" I was invited to come in September, but I was booked, and then they were booked in October, so we landed on a November date.

Denny Patterson: You are performing a show called The Wonderful World of Drag. What can we expect?

Paige Turner: It’s a Disney-with-a-Z parody show, and it’s basically how Disney and drag go hand in hand, as

well as how one can be inspired by Disney characters and dressing up. Even if you’re not the biggest Disney fan, there is something about expressing yourself and finding yourself within that magic that makes you fall in love with it. The show is written for everybody, and it’s very lighthearted. I don't want to make people cry, but I definitely love doing something emotional, which you wouldn’t think a drag queen would do. The biggest takeaway for me has been people saying they like the message of the show, which means more to me than anything. There’s always a message in Disney, so I’m like, "How can I do it?"

Denny Patterson: What do you always hope audiences take away from a Paige Turner production?

Paige Turner: I always want to spark joy. My whole aesthetic is naughty but nice, and I’m pretty tawdry. It’s not vulgar, and I really want people to have an experience and be on a ride. And as we all know, Disney is quite a ride! This show is a ride where you get to know more about me. When I first started doing drag, it was very much, "Oh, I have to be this character." I definitely am a character, but my heart is always the same on stage as it is in real life. It’s just amplified. I want people to feel something, and I love when they’re like, "I’ve never laughed so hard," or "I can’t believe you said that." When each person says something different, I’m checking off all the boxes. I have always been about the experience, and with The Wonderful World of Drag, I want audiences to unlock their inner child.

Denny Patterson: Have you always had a passion for entertaining?

Paige Turner: Like every other gay boy, unfortunately, yes. (Laughs) It bit me at a young age. I say in the show how I dressed up at a young age as Peter Pan and was convinced I could fly and wouldn’t age at all. This is the most truthful show I've ever done as far as storytelling.

South Florida Pride Concert Band Presents ‘An Evening with Lea DeLaria’

The

Two-time SAG award winning actress Lea DeLaria may be best known for her stand-out role as Carrie ‘Big Boo’ Black in the hit Netflix series Orange Is the New Black, but her multifaceted career has, in fact, spanned decades.

Lucky for us, we will have the chance to see DeLaria up close and personal on November 9, 2024 as she performs alongside the South Florida Pride Concert Band during a one-night-only engagement. Featuring several jazz and Broadway selections, as well as DeLaria’s sharp wit and vocal talents, audiences are in for a special treat that they will regret missing out on.

An Evening with Lea DeLaria will be performed at the Broward Center’s Armaturo Theater, and OutClique had the opportunity to chat more with the queer icon about her upcoming engagement, being unapologetically herself, and portraying butch lesbians authentically.

Denny Patterson: Hi, Lea! How excited are you for your upcoming performance with the South Florida Pride Concert Band?

Lea DeLaria: I always love doing a concert with a band in whatever shape! I just love being able to sing my face off. It makes me very, very, very happy.

Denny Patterson: What can we expect?

Lea DeLaria: This is the one where it’s just me and the band, so I’m not bringing my trio with me or anything else. I’ve talked with the musical director a bit about different tunes we wanted to do, so I’ll be doing stuff from my canon. You’ll hear jazz, you’ll hear Broadway, and of course, I’m going to be funny!

Denny Patterson: Performing for live audiences, what do you always hope they take away from your sets?

Lea DeLaria: Don’t judge a butch by its cover. That has literally been my entire life’s work. In life and in the media, we have been represented in such stereotypical

ways. Butch people are stupid. Butch people beat their wives. Butch people are truck drivers and don’t know anything about sports. However, I am here to say that butch people are good at everything. We pride ourselves in it. We do everything, and we’re good at everything. When I’m standing up on stage, I can have either a funky, vintage style, or I could be dressed in a classic, perfectly tailored men’s suit. And don’t be surprised when I belt a D sharp! I’ve starred in a couple Broadway shows. I can belt a D sharp, and don’t be surprised when I start blowing over changes like freaking Ella Fitzgerald, because I am a jazz singer as well. I’m also a lesbian comic, so don’t be surprised if I say some crass words. I try to incorporate everything when I am on stage.

Denny Patterson: Have you always had this sense of being unapologetically yourself?

Lea DeLaria: Yes, and I think that’s because of my parents. My father was a jazz musician, and my mother was a dancer. They encouraged me to follow my dreams, and they were always there for me. I don't mean to compare myself to Shirley Chisholm, but when I was 14 years old, Shirley Chisholm ran for president, and I remember her saying, "Somebody's gotta do it. Somebody's got to be the first," and that always stuck with me. So, I never cared much. I know this sounds weird, but I never really wanted to be famous. I didn’t chase this because I wanted to be famous. I do this because it’s what I love to do. I lead a very charmed life, and I know a lot of people can’t say that. Entertaining people is the only thing I ever wanted to do, but it was always important to me to be unapologetically myself. Every morning when I wake up, I want to look in the mirror and like who I see. Growing up in the '60s and early '70s, I thought there was nobody else like me, and I’m surprised that many people still feel that way today. I receive messages from kids saying, "I thought I was the only one, but then I saw you." I never thought I would ever achieve this amount of fame, but being myself and knowing that I am inspiring others is very important to me.

THURSDAY,

"Eras Collide" in New City Players’ Dynamic 2024-2025 Season

New City Players unveils its thought-provoking 20242025 season, "Eras Collide," featuring four productions that traverse time to illuminate our present. Drawing inspiration from philosopher George Santayana's warning that "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it," this season invites audiences to look back in order to move forward.

"Our 'Eras Collide' season is a journey through pivotal moments in history that continue to shape our world today," says Timothy Mark Davis, Producing Artistic Director of New City Players. "From 1862 to the present, these stories remind us of the cyclical nature of the human experience and the importance of not only learning from, but reckoning with our past."

The season opened with Short Plays: Lauder Made (September 27-28, 2024), directed by Davis. This 75-minute showcase featured five new plays by South Florida playwrights, weaving together threads of Fort Lauderdale's rich history.

Next, the world premiere of The Last Christmas by Tyler Johnson Grimes (December 6-22, 2024), also directed by Davis, completes the trilogy of holiday plays New City Players has produced over the past two seasons by taking audiences back to radio station WNCP on Christmas Eve in 1999. As the new millennium approaches, this heartwarming play

explores timeless themes of connection and hope.

Arthur Miller's classic All My Sons (February 21–March 9, 2025), directed by Mary Gundlach, transports viewers to 1947. This powerful and timeless drama examines the lasting impact of World War II on American families and the enduring pursuit of the American Dream, regardless of the consequences.

The season concludes with Dominique Morisseau's Confederates (July 11-27, 2025), directed by Maha McCain. This Florida premiere that premiered OffBroadway in 2022 deftly and comedically connects the experiences of an enslaved woman in 1862 with those of a modern-day university professor, highlighting the persistent echoes of racism across centuries.

"'Eras Collide' challenges us to see the connections between past and present," adds Davis. "We're excited to engage our community in conversations that bridge time and illuminate our shared humanity."

Performances for the three mainstages will take place at Island City Stage in Wilton Manors. Season tickets are on sale now and single tickets for the three main stage productions went on sale October 1, 2024.
