Dear Santa Hey everyone. Did you write “Dear Santa” letters as a child? Did you go see him at the mall? I had great childhood memories of Kris Kringle. And that Rudolof cartoon that played every single December. We had to plan our calendars back then before VHS. But today, the world is much different for kids and for everyone. What do you wish for this holiday season? What is on your list? A boyfriend or girlfriend? A new job? Or how about a new outlook on life? Whatever it is, 2024 is a new year, literally. I hope that you find joy this holiday season. Find peace amidst any storm. Go hear the holiday songs at Master Chorale or the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida. Symphonies are ringing in the sounds of the holidays. And even Drag Queens are singing the songs of His birth. Friends, Christmas (or insert your holiday name *here*) is upon us!

May happiness be abounding.1 Dr. Steven 2 Publisher & Editor in Chief OutClique Magazine

James Braun and Jeff Smead Partners in Life and Work

Most folks come to Key West to relax, kick back, and party, but Jeff Smead and James Braun came to work. They are the management “mechanics” behind the curtain at Island House, who make lifetime memories for their appreciative and loyal guests. Viewing the trajectories of their earlier lives, their happy collision seems inevitable. Jeff came to the Keys between high school and college for a summer job with the Boy Scouts of America. After a second summer, it was clear to him that as soon as he finished college, he would move to the Keys full time. Jeff had gotten “Island Fever”, and in July of 2006, armed with a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management from Cal State University, he became a Key West local. James came to the Keys in the Fall of 2012, with over 15 years of business management experience as well as a summer job bartending at the Pied Bar in Provincetown. He had never been to Key West before but had been convinced to join the Ptown - Key West snowbird migration. During his first week living in Key West, James met Jeff at Island House, at Table #3. Jeff says, “James introduced himself and started asking me a million questions about my job at Island House. When I tried to beg him off, he asked me to dinner. I wasn’t used to being asked to dinner by someone after just minutes of meeting them, but he persisted for days after my ‘maybe’ and made it quite clear that he wasn’t going to stop until I gave him my number. It took about three days, and finally I caved.” James says, “Jeff had worked in marketing for the producers of ‘Key West Fantasy Fest’ in 2008. Island House had recently come on board as an event host for the festival. I was a liquor sales rep for Breakthru Beverage, creating wine and spirits programming for about 100 local bar, restaurant, and hotel clients. In addition to designing cocktails, menus, and staff training, I also developed the website for Island House.” Their partnership at Island House is only half of the story. They also collaborate in the acquisition, renovation, and flipping of houses in historic Key West,

providing sweat equity, doing the work themselves every evening, weekend, and holiday for five years. They are currently working on the “haunted mansion” Princess Ann style house next door to Island House. This is the third project the couple has attacked together, and, using proceeds from the first two, the first time they have contracted with locals to do much of the work. For most couples, the idea of living and working together is at best daunting and at worst a recipe for discord. How do Jeff and James manage this? Jeff says, “It’s a lot . . . but at this point it’s what we’re both used to. James is so talented at the things I’m terrible at, and vice versa. We’re very lucky in that sense that we each let the other one be who he is and be successful at what he’s good at doing. The support we’ve received from Island House owner Bobi Lore, the community, and the thousands of Island House guests has been amazing. There’s just no option to fail.” Living in Key West has been a challenge and a pleasure for Jeff and James. They finish each other’s sentences, saying, “We love island life. We love not having a commute to work, and having a small circle of really close local friends who live just a few blocks away from us. Everything we need to be successful is already here. Island life has a simplicity that is really appealing to us, because everyone knows each other, and we share a common sense of community. It’s definitely a unique place to live. When you’re meant to be here, it just works. This ain’t the mainland and we love that.” What does the future hold for Jeff and James? More of the same, as they continue their strong partnership with Island House owner Bobi Lore. Together, they are writing the next chapter of Island House, renovating rooms, improving the common areas, and adding to the café menu, so that younger guests will enjoy the same “rite of passage” cherished by older guests who keep coming back for more. Jeff and James are skilled custodians of a tradition going back to 1976 when Island House opened its doors to the gay community. The Key West gay community is healthier than ever, and together these men serve it beautifully.

Cher’s First-Ever Holiday Album

Christmas

Available Now!

Cher has made our holiday wishes come true with the release of Cher Christmas – available now via Warner Records. Christmas, Cher’s first new studio album in five years, includes 13 songs - several holiday classics and four originals. It also has a star-studded list of musical besties including Darlene Love, Stevie Wonder, Michael Bublé, Cyndi Lauper and Tyga. “I never say this about my own records but I’m really proud of this one. It is one of the most amazing highlights of my career,” commented Cher. The Guardian raved, “The catchy dance track, ‘DJ Play a Christmas Song,’ evokes a night that’s anything but silent.” And Consequence added, “‘DJ Play a Christmas Song’ is a rebel’s anthem for anyone whose parents told them Santa Claus would skip their house if they didn’t go to sleep”

“DJ Play A Christmas Song," the first single, was written by Sarah Hudson (Dua Lipa, Katy Perry, Troye Sivan) and her team who contributed four new songs for the album. Recorded primarily in LA and London, Christmas was produced by longtime collaborator Mark Taylor (Believe). Songs include beloved superstar duet classics “What Christmas Means To Me" with Stevie Wonder and "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" with Darlene Love. (Darlene first recorded the song with Phil Spector and a l7-year-old Cher singing background vocals); in addition to a haunting version of “Home" written and sung with Michael Bublé. One of the many highlights is a duet by Cher and Stevie Wonder of Stevie’s “What Christmas Means to Me." Commented Cher, “Every time I hear that harmonica, I’m a teenager again. It’s a personal dream come true for me to record this song with Stevie.”

Pub On the Drive Holds Wreath Auction Forget decking the halls and start decking the bars. The most decoratively festive fundraiser of the season is back at Pub On the Drive. Their 10th Annual Charity Wreath Auction goes down Wednesday, December 6, 2023, at 8pm inside the Pub. Some are adorned with flowing ribbons, others with bright lights. Some may be decorated with Santa in South Florida getting some sun, Rudolph and his boys. For a decade, creative holiday lovers have brought amazing and memorable wreaths to The Pub for auction. The money is for a great cause. “We have a good relationship with Kids in Distress (KID),” the Pub’s Managing Partner, Alex Sadeghi, told OutClique. “The first year was a small event, but people liked it. The next year, people were talking about it.” Wreaths can be dropped off starting November 22, and will be on display around the bar and its new patio, Pride Hub. People can come in and start scoping out their favorites and deciding which pulls on their holiday heartstrings. The one and only Electra is back as emcee and auctioneer, so you know you’ll be entertained and could be drawn into a bidding war. There have been hundreds of wreaths over the decade, but one sticks out in Sadeghi’s memory. “Pompano Bill brought in a beautiful wreath. We kept it for several years.” For more information, please contact Pub on the Drive at (754) 200-5244 or by email at info@ThePubWM.com. Author: John Hayden | Photo Courtesy of SRL Media

Mike Connell, Owner of Pub On the Drive Passes Away Mike Connell was more than the owner of Pub On the Drive. He was more than a community supporter. He was a community cheerleader. With his mischievous smile and captivating eyes, Connell was a recognizable favorite among people up and down Wilton Drive. He passed away overnight Tuesday, November 7, 2023. Despite suffering a stroke a month ago, he was doing quite well and appearing to make a full recovery. Connell was loved by the staff at the Pub. Most spent Wednesday consoling each other and his husband, James Walker. The Pub announced his passing on social media, saying, “Here at the Pub we are at a loss for words and heartbroken. Our beloved Michael Connell passed away in his sleep unexpectedly last night. He suffered a stroke last month & was still fragile. His close friends and family join us with tears of sadness & heartbreak but with such gratitude for having been able to share in his life. The amazing life of a great man whose legacy of love, compassion, humility, kindness & justice will leave those who knew him touched. Rest Easy Michael.” The memorial service will be at United Church of Christ, Fort Lauderdale, 2PM on December 2, 2023. Connell believed in the community. He viewed The Pub

as a sort of ‘public trust,’ more than a business. Wilton Manors Mayor Scott Newton remembers him as an outstanding representative of the city. “Mike was a bundle of joy. He never asked much from the City but gave back to the community in so many ways,” he told OutClique. “The Pub will always be known as Mike's place. He will surely be missed by many here and elsewhere. Rest in peace.” Connell stood up for the community at every opportunity. When drag entertainers were targeted by lawmakers, he continued to book them at The Pub. When a customer started shouting racist slurs at performers, Connell was first to say, ‘Not in my house!’ Friends from The Pub and throughout the community shared support for his family and each other. Terry Motter said “My heart is shattered. Mike will be fondly remembered as an amazing man. I’ve known Mike for over thirty years since he hired me at Target. My sincerest condolences to Jim, his family, and The Pub staff.” Brian Heavner may have summed it up best, saying, “He was a great and caring man. Always the kindest and would always greet you with a smile.”

Bears of South Florida Give Back

Charles Baran: Hello William! Tell our readers a little bit about the Bears of South Florida. William Haas: For many years the Bears of South Florida were known primarily as “The Pool Party” guys. But we’re so much more than that. We are a philanthropic organization that raises money for LGBTQ organizations in South Florida. Charles Baran: Where does the money come from? William Haas: From admission fees to our fun and popular social events and from donations. Charles Baran: What groups benefit? William Haas: We’ve given money to The Pride Center, SunServe, The Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida and the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble, to name a few. We even partner with some of these groups on other charitable events. Last month we co-sponsored the Teddy Bear Drive at Hunters with The Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida and donated over 1,300 Teddy Bears to the Children’s Hospital. Charles Baran: Are all the beneficiaries local? William Haas: Actually, no. After hurricane Ian in 2022 we gave an emergency grant to The Pride Center of Naples to help them with repairs. Organizations that would like to be considered can submit a grant application. This year we are giving away over $20,000. Giving back to the community is something I believe in.

Living in South Florida conjures images of sunshine and palm trees. Certainly not bears. Yet bears there are and bears aplenty. I’m speaking of the Bears of South Florida, an organization that began 20 years ago and continues to grow in membership and purpose. I recently sat down with William Haas, the Board President of the BOSFL, for an informative chat about the history of this benevolent organization.

pool parties which are held at either Solstice at Wilton, Ed Lugo Resort or Agustin Men’s Guesthouse. Other fun events are bowling and Community Sing-a-Longs. Charles Baran: Can only members attend? William Haas: Good question. First, there are no dues to join. Anyone can become a member by going to our website www.BOSFL.org and signing up. The admission price to the pool party is a reasonable $35 and includes lunch with donations for the bar. They’re so popular that they sell out in an hour or two from when we announce them. Charles Baran: Tell me two things that you are most proud of as President of the Bears of South Florida. William Haas: We welcome all types of gay men, big, small, thin, heavyset, furry, hairless. It’s a state-of-mind rather than a body type. One new member recently thanked me for making him feel so comfortable that he was able to take his shirt off at our pool party. It had been years since he had last done that. We promote body positivity.

Charles Baran: The Bears of South Florida is a Not-ForProfit organization, right? William Haas: That’s right. We’re a registered 501 (c) 3. All donations are tax deductible. Charles Baran: Tell us about the group’s social activities. William Haas: One of our main social events is the monthly Author: Charles Baran

Five Reasons to Support Small Businesses this Holiday Season As the holiday season approaches, many of us eagerly anticipate the joy of giving and receiving gifts, spending quality time with loved ones, and savoring delicious meals. The holidays are a time for spreading cheer and goodwill, and one way to do this is by supporting small businesses. While it might be convenient to turn to large corporations and online retailers for your holiday shopping, there are compelling reasons why consumers should make a conscious effort to support small businesses during this festive season.

and often go the extra mile to ensure their customers are happy. You'll find that local shop owners and employees are more accessible, knowledgeable, and willing to provide assistance and recommendations.

1. Fostering a Stronger Local Economy

5. Building Stronger Communities

One of the most significant benefits of supporting small businesses during the holiday shopping season is the positive impact it has on your local economy. Small businesses are often the backbone of communities, and when you shop at local stores, you help create jobs, boost economic stability, and promote self-reliance in your community.

The success of small businesses is closely tied to the well-being of the communities they serve. By supporting these businesses, you contribute to the growth and vitality of your neighborhood. This creates a sense of unity and shared purpose, making your community a more attractive and enjoyable place to live.

2. Unique and Thoughtful Gifts

The holidays are a time for giving, and one of the most meaningful gifts you can give this holiday season is the support of small businesses. By choosing to shop local, you help create a stronger local economy, discover unique and thoughtful gifts, receive personalized customer service, and promote environmentally friendly practices. When you shop small, you're more likely to find one-of-a-kind gifts that showcase the talent and creativity of local artisans. These thoughtful gifts add a personal touch to your holiday season and make your loved ones feel special. 3. Personalized Customer Service

Small businesses take pride in their customer service

4. Environmental Benefits

Shopping at small, local businesses can also have environmental advantages. Many small businesses source their products locally, reducing the carbon footprint associated with transportation and distribution.

What Are You Doing

for The Holidays?

Baxter Martin: We are visiting Dr. Ferdinand Cabrera and his husband, Dimitri Bakoulis, owners of Genesis Health Institute. Dr. Cabrera, please tell OutClique readers about your holiday fundraiser.

Dr. Cabrera: We believe in giving back to our community. So, every year, we host a fundraiser at Genesis to support organizations dear to our hearts. This year, our fundraiser will benefit Abandoned Pet Rescue and other local worthy organizations. We are also celebrating our 15th anniversary this year! Baxter Martin: Congratulations on your anniversary. Dimitri, what is Abandoned Pet Rescue, and how long have you supported them? Dimitri: Abandoned Pet Rescue (APR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that rescues and shelters abandoned and abused dogs and cats intending to find them new homes. APR is one of the largest no-kill animal shelters in South Florida. They have provided quality care for 6,800 cats and dogs in the past decade. This year’s fundraiser will be our 7th for them. Baxter Martin: Do you have anything special planned to celebrate your 15th anniversary? Dr. Cabrera: Yes! This year’s celebration will feature Synergy Twins. You may have seen them perform at various major events in Wilton Manors. Twin brothers, Stephen and Jeff Neil have been electrifying audiences with their unique musical performances since 2013.

Baxter Martin: Dimitri, what will happen at the event?

Dimitri: Genesis’ holiday party is always a fun celebration! We have a DJ, the Synergy Twins of course, hors d’oeuvres, libations, and raffles throughout the evening with wrinkle reducer, dermal filler, and various PRP treatment prizes donated by our aesthetic partners like Juvederm, Hydrafacial, EltaMD, and SkinCeuticals. APR will also attend with adoptable cats and dogs for anyone interested in adding to their family or getting involved with this true no-kill shelter. Baxter Martin: Anything else you’d like to share with OutClique readers? Dr. Cabrera: The event’s real intention is the fundraiser to benefit the non-profit organizations. The highlight of the evening is that existing and new patients may purchase a $500 Genesis gift certificate for $400, saving 20%. December 14th is the only day of the year we will offer this special; the gift certificates may be used for any medical or aesthetic treatment offered at Genesis. And we donate 10% net of all gift certificate sales from the event to the benefiting non-profits. Last year, we donated almost $30,000. Baxter Martin: Your 15th anniversary, food, music, pets, skin care prizes, and all for a great cause. How exciting! Thank you both for your time. I’m looking forward to seeing you on December 14.

Baxter Martin: Tell us when your event is happening. Can anyone attend? Dr. Cabrera: Our 15th Anniversary Holiday Celebration is on Thursday, December 14, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Genesis Health Institute in Wilton Manors. We ask that OutClique readers RSVP using the QR code below by Thursday, December 7.

Education is important and expensive. That much we know. What students may not know is that a new scholarship program could open new opportunities. Latinos Salud has launched its new Health and Support Services Pride Scholarship program. The program is designed to help the LGBTQIA+ professionals of tomorrow deal with the financial burdens of today. “Our ultimate goal in funding the Health and Support Services Pride Scholarship is to contribute to a local workforce that treats LGBT community members with kindness, respect, and understanding,” Latinos Salud Executive Director Dr. Stephen Fallon told OutClique. “It’s possible that some of our scholars may find their first job post-graduation waiting for them right here at one of Latinos Salud’s locations.” And there are lots of opportunities to make that happen. Latinos Salud has offices in Wilton Manors, Miami Beach, Southwest Miami, and North Miami. They offer HIV-testing, vaccinations, a PrEP wellness clinic, and more. What sets their care apart is cultural competency. Many places have a one-size-fits-all system. That is tone deaf and dangerous in a multicultural community like South Florida. “The scholarship is just one part of Latinos Salud’s overall program to help develop culturally attuned professionals in careers such as nursing, psychology, social work, and public health,” Dr. Fallon said. The scholarships are up to $2,500 for college freshmen and sophomores, up to $5,000 for juniors and seniors. Beyond the immediate financial support provided, each scholar also gets to meet with Latinos Salud’s senior staff, to identify any ways that the agency can further support

their professional development. These may include offering access to Latinos Salud’s sites for final research projects, contact with the agency’s clinical staff for general mentorship, or formal internship or preceptorship. Scholars can also re-apply each year, and may be selected for support each year as they progress through their undergraduate education. As this new program evolves, Dr. Fallon noted that the agency may continue to support scholars who continue into graduate programs. “We want to remove barriers for aspiring professionals in the care and service professions, just as our staff strive to remove barriers for community members who need these very services.” Dr. Fallon says the search for the right candidates was thorough. “Each applicant submitted a personal essay, describing their academic goals, and how their personal experiences may help them to better connect with and serve clients or patients in their future career. Finalists were interviewed by our selection committee, which included the two physicians on our Board of Directors.” One of the recipients is Luis Silva, a nursing student in his sophomore year at Miami-Dade College. “The scholarship means a lot to me beyond financial support. It means involvement, community, communication towards the people that want to see me thrive and that's something I will never forget.” Community is important to Silva, as it was a community function that brought the 24-year-old to Latinos Salud. “I heard about Latinos Salud while I was visiting the pride parade of Wilton Manors last year. I saw them and wanted to be involved in a latin gay community group. I came to the organization and applied for the scholarship to financially support my career as a nurse.”

Care Resource Recognized As Clinical Quality Leader, Among Top Health Centers in the Nation Care Resource Community Health Centers, Inc. was recognized by The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and awarded the 2023 Gold Health Center Quality Leader badge. This positions Care Resource in the top 10% of health centers across the nation. These digital badges are part of the Community Health Quality Recognition (CHQR) badge program, honoring health centers that have achieved the best overall clinical quality performance. The CHQR badge program recognizes outstanding performance in various clinical areas, from behavioral health and heart health to HIV prevention and care, as well as overall quality performance. In fact, Care Resource was additionally recognized in the top 1% of all health centers nationwide as a National Quality Leader in HIV Care & Prevention. Care Resource, originally established to address the HIV epidemic in South Florida, has evolved over the past four decades into a comprehensive healthcare provider that serves a diverse patient population. Today, as a Federally Qualified Health Center, Care Resource offers a wide range of accessible and affordable medical services, preventive care, and support for patients of all ages, providing holistic care and addressing the healthcare needs of the community. Dr. Steven Santiago, Chief Medical Officer at Care Resource, explains, “Our success at Care Resource is a result of several key factors that have set us apart. One of our defining characteristics is our comprehensive and

integrated care model. We place a strong emphasis on holistic healthcare, considering not only the physical but also the mental and social aspects of our patients’ wellbeing. This approach has played a pivotal role in ensuring high patient satisfaction and exceptional healthcare outcomes.” Building trust with patients is a cornerstone of Care Resource’s approach to high-quality healthcare. The health center prioritizes cultural sensitivity and empathy as integral components of its patient-centered approach, understanding the diverse backgrounds and experiences of its patients. Dr. Sheryl Zayas, Medical Director at Care Resource, emphasizes, “Patient care is our utmost priority. We believe that involving patients in their care decisions is essential. Our team engages patients in their treatment plans, making them active participants in their health journey. In addition, our commitment to providing culturally sensitive care and addressing the unique healthcare needs of our diverse patient population has been instrumental in achieving top-tier outcomes.” Care Resource was also the recipient of two additional 2023 CHQR badges. The Advancing Health Information Technology (HIT) for Quality badge is awarded to those health centers that offer services such as telehealth and engage patients through health IT. As well as the Access Enhancer badge, which requires a health center to improve its clinical quality measures and increase patients receiving services for mental health, substance use disorder, vision, dental, or enabling services.

FLoatarama

From Pandemic Parade to Philanthropic Powerhouse What began as a spontaneous, mostly gay gathering of 20plus, socially distanced private boats along Fort Lauderdale’s famous Intracoastal Waterway has grown into a movement with a purpose. “We were just looking for a way to get out of the house and get together with our friends during the lockdown,” explains Scott Schramm, FLoatarama’s Founder and President. “We didn’t expect it to grow so quickly.” Schramm, a yacht broker and Captain, along with his partner, Roderick MacKenzie, the non-profit’s Vice President and Treasurer, saw an opportunity to transform their growing seafaring squad into a party with a purpose.

Now a staple in South Florida's Pride Week, FLoatarama has swiftly evolved into a philanthropic leader in the heart of Fort Lauderdale both on water and on land with supporting parties and gatherings throughout Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors including a Welcome Party, Captains Party, and Garden Party. This transformation was highlighted during the recent check presentation this past October at Hunter’s Nightclub, where FLoatarama made a resounding impact on local organizations, raising an impressive $75,000 for the FLoatarama LGBTQ Youth Fund.

As FLoatarama’s popularity soared, so did its purpose. FLoatarama-2022 was a landmark year, marking the first event held under its own 501(c)3 status. The event showcased a remarkable display of solidarity and pride, featuring the signature flotilla with private and commercial vessels. The festivities continued with the Sailor’s Dance & Pool Party, hosted by the renowned San Francisco DJ Matt Consola. This event alone managed to raise an astounding $50,000 for the FLoatarama LGBTQ Youth Fund, managed by Philanthropy Partner, The Our Fund Foundation.

Schramm, along with the effervescent hostess, FayWhat?!, proudly presented grants to six deserving organizations including The Humanity Project which received $5,000 to fuel its anti-bullying initiatives, while Thinking Cap Theater was granted $10,000 to nurture LGBTQ+ youth arts. SunServe, received a substantial $20,000, emphasizing the importance of their vital work. The South Florida Pride Youth Band, a musical haven for young talents, was awarded $15,000, supporting their artistic endeavors. Stonewall National Archives, Museum & Library received $10,000, and National Voices for Equality, Education, and Enlightenment was granted $15,000. These generous contributions marked a remarkable 50% increase from the previous year, a testament to the biggest LGBTQ+ Pride-on-Water celebration in America’s growing impact and dedication to supporting LGBTQ+ youth.

By June 2023, over 400-celebrants proudly cruised the New River and Intracoastal Waterway lead by Grand Marshal Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz aboard the 130-foot Sun Dream Yachts M/Y Catalina.

With the resounding success of the recent event, FLoatarama’s founders eagerly anticipate another upcoming grand affair: the Sights & Lights Cruise scheduled for December 28, 2023.

“By our second year, the flotilla grew to 34-boats with Mayor Dean Trantalis as the Grand Marshall,” shares MacKenzie. “That year, we partnered with Pride Fort Lauderdale and were able to donate $17,134 to their GED/Scholarship program.”

“It was great working with Joe, he stuck with us across an arduous 8 month search in the hyper competitive Fort Lauderdale market. His knowledge of local neighborhoods (down to each and every street) and peculiarities unique to Florida was particularly helpful as my husband and I relocated from out of state. After several offers we finally found the perfect house for us, the last month to close was nail biting, but he handled all the curve balls like a pro. Bouvèé Babble New Year, New (you pick!)

The thought of a new year is like attending your friend’s wedding. It makes you wonder, “what would I do differently” or “when I get married, I will . . . ”. Most people start the new year with a resolution. But I wanted to encourage you, dear readers, to think of the new year as more of a spiritual rebirth.

I turned 40 this year and for me that meant many things personally. I made the decision to not carry things for long periods of time, to do more than let go but address things and deal with them, rather than allowing grudges or stress to fester. I would encourage you to think of the new year as both a shedding and a rebirth.

In Caribbean cultures, and in fact many cultures around the world, the new year is brought in by things like Mardi Gras and Carnival. They celebrate with dances, parties, and a ceremonial dance down the line as others hold their hands up to mimic the birth canal. It is, after all, a rebirth. Fireworks came as a celebration and to mimic the “release” of the old. The gathering of groups was and is meant to celebrate community and renew our sense of humanity and kindness. The one thing we all share and can never get back, is time. Of course, in New Orleans we celebrate Mardi Gras. That time of year begins for them on 12th night, or January 7th and spans until “Fat Tuesday”. It’s a long period of celebration, rebirth, eating decadently and yes, partying. The lesson here is, don’t think of the new year as one day; it is one of many seasons in the year's time period.

There is an ancient rune called Berkano (looks like a B); its meaning is rebirth. Its translation teaches about trimming dead tree limbs and allowing bad leaves to fall. Its presence promotes rebirth and renewal, renewal of energy and ideas, a fertility if you will. I think a new year is just that, fertile. Ready for you to plant seeds of goals, plans, thoughts that have an entire year ahead to manifest. Heck, even in King Cake (served at Mardi Gras), we hide . . . A BABY! In closing, I encourage you to take time to not only look ahead but to look back and allow for the bad things to fall away. Pruning can cause regrowth after all. Think of this time of year as an ending and a new beginning. What can you get rid of that will help you make room for the new? Happy holidays everyone, and Happy New Year.

Carson Kressley on Celebrating 20 Years of

‘Q u e e r E y e ’ All things just keep getting better, even 20 years later. Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, the cultural phenomenon that reshaped television and made a seismic impact when it first graced our screens, introduced a dynamic group of five extraordinary gay men - Ted Allen (food & wine), Kyan Douglas (grooming), Thom Filicia (design), Carson Kressley (fashion), and Jai Rodriguez (culture) - who brought humor, expertise, and acceptance into the lives of many. Not only did they transform wardrobes and living spaces; they revolutionized attitudes and perceptions. Now, two decades later, the original Fab Five are reuniting for a one-night only live event, An Evening with the Fab Five - 20 Years Later, at the Wind Creek Event Center in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on December 16, 2023. Audiences should prepare for an intimate evening filled with untold stories, reflections on their impactful journey, and a peek into their current endeavors. OutClique recently caught up with Kressley to talk more about the upcoming event and his time on Queer Eye, as well as how he was chosen to be the show’s fashion savant, memorable makeovers, bringing queer visibility to the small screen, and being a judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race. Denny Patterson: Carson, how does it feel to know that Queer Eye for the Straight Guy is celebrating its 20-year anniversary?

Carson Kressley: It seems inconceivable! It feels like yesterday, we’re all riding around in our Yukon Denali, running into very filthy apartments, and meeting schlubby straight guys who needed our help. It’s a mixed feeling of I can’t believe it was that long ago, but at the same time, it feels like yesterday. Denny Patterson: You, Thom, Jai, Ted, and Kyan are reuniting for a special event titled, An Evening with the Fab Five - 20 Years Later, on December 16 at the Wind Creek Event Center in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. What can audiences expect? Carson Kressley: This will be the first official thing we’ve done together since our last episode in 2007, which was our 100th episode with Susan Lucci. It was this grand finale “Mr. Queer Eye Pageant.” We’ve done a quick reunion special with Andy Cohen a couple years ago, and we’ve gotten together for different things to support one another, but we haven’t really done a project together since the show ended, so this will be very fun. It’s definitely going to be very authentic. We are going to answer questions from the audience, talk about our favorite moments from the show, and certainly, we'll talk about the show’s societal and cultural impact. We also might do a live makeover on stage. We’ll randomly choose some people from the audience and then work with local vendors to do a live makeover as the show progresses. This is also just a great opportunity for fans of the show to gather. It’s almost like OG Queer Eye Con, where like-minded folks who enjoyed the show can connect.

Grabbing the Spotlight with John Murdock Life in the theater can be exciting and not just for the performers on stage. I recently had the opportunity to speak with John Murdock, the new Production Stage Manager at Slow Burn Theatre Company who gave me a behind-the-scenes peek at one the of the top theater companies in South Florida and his important job of “running the show!” Charles Baran: Hello John! Tell me a bit about yourself. John Murdock: Well, I’m originally from Des Moines, but grew up in Naples. I went to Baylor University in Texas where I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Stage Management. Right after graduation, I went to New York, where for ten years, I was an Assistant Stage Manager on several Broadway shows, including Finian’s Rainbow with Cheyanne Jackson and A Little Night Music with Angela Lansbury and Catherine Zeta-Jones and then with Elaine Stritch and Bernadette Peters.

glue that holds the show together. Nothing happens, lights, scenery changes, everything, without the Stage Manager saying “GO!” The goal is to deliver a flawless show each performance. It takes a high level of detail, patience, and energy. Charles Baran: Looking at your Instagram, I can see you are someone that lives and breathes theater. What is your favorite musical of all time? John Murdock: It’s a tie between Ragtime and A Little Night Music. Night Music is a stunning show and of course the beautiful Sondheim score. We just closed Into the Woods at Slow Burn and listening to those magnificent Sondheim tunes every day made my job even more enjoyable.

Charles Baran: Wow. That’s some pedigree. Slow Burn must be glad to have you. John Murdock: I have to say I am truly grateful to Patrick and Matthew for bringing me on board as the PSM for this exciting season. I moved back to Florida in 2013. I had been working in the social media and advertising world, but theater is my first, and really, only true love. So, I couldn’t be happier to be back in this field.

Charles Baran: What are the shows that are coming up at Slow Burn? John Murdock: Next is The Little Mermaid and I couldn’t be happier. When I was a kid, my sister Jessica and I would fight over who was going to be Ariel. We played the VHS tape so often that we wore it out. Our mom replaced it three times! Then in March we’re doing The Prom which I really want everyone in Wilton Manors to see. I love the generational aspect of the show and telling of the different LGBTQ experiences. It’s an important musical and sends a great message.

Charles Baran: PSM, that’s short for Production Stage Manager. For those of us who might not know what a PSM does, explain the position. John Murdock: A Production Stage Manager is the

Charles Baran: Thank you, John, for this amazing interview. John Murdock: You’re welcome! I look forward to seeing you at The Little Mermaid!

New Director Named to the Coral Springs Center for the Arts Meera Paul Hammad, the new general manager of the Coral Springs Center for the Arts, has long considered The Center home. In her youth, she first trained there as a dancer and later choreographed the summer camp programs. She even met her husband working at The Center. After a six-year stint in Los Angeles as a talent agent, Hammad returned to Coral Springs to raise her family and returned to The Center to serve as marketing director. In addition to her husband and two young sons, Hammad also see her coworkers as family. “I really truly love theater. I love the shows here and I love working with our staff,” she said. “We’ve all been working together for years. Some have been working here for 20 years. Some have been working here for 15, but we’ve all kind of grown here. We’re a family.” Hammad has worked tirelessly with her team for months to facilitate the transition of The Center’s operations to the City of Coral Springs. She credits the smooth transition to her staff. “We’ve all known each other for such a long time,” said Hammad. “We are very much in this transition together. Everyone is so supportive of one another because we all want to see each other do well.” With the transition officially behind them and the staff now city employees, the team is focused on the future. “Right now, our short-term goal is that we just want everything to transition as smoothly as possible. So, we’re keeping everything the same for now. We are

going to do a minor face lift and then, in the next year or so, we are hoping to fully renovate the building, starting with the theater,” said Hammad. Hammad is confident that The Center will continue to be a valuable resource for the Coral Springs community with quality programming. “We have a fantastic after school and summer program called Next Stop Broadway. It’s probably the best training facility if you’re interested in the arts and in performing,” she said. “It’s so wonderful that I put my boys in it and now they are obsessed. They love it and it really gives them confidence. The arts in general really does that for children and gives them a different perspective—helps them become a little more well-rounded.” Hammad notes that Coral Springs is a family-oriented town filled with young families and, and that while some of The Center’s programming reflects that, they also provide programming across ages. The operations of The Center may have moved under the City’s umbrella, but Hammad said that they will continue to work with the professional management company to bring good, high caliber, quality shows to The Center. Hammad, who has a deep love of the arts, recognizes the importance of community access to the performing arts at places like The Center. “It helps shape your mind and helps with growth in so many ways,” she said. “It offers a sense of unity and community for families. The Center offers a place where children and families can come and enjoy the arts.”

Leading By Example at Sunshine Cathedral

“I’m boring.” That was the warning Peggy Brereton gave me when we sat down to talk. Low key? Perhaps. Boring? Definitely not. As we sat down to talk, the sun beamed through the stained glass windows of Sunshine Cathedral where she serves as head usher. She has called Sunshine home since coming to South Florida in 2009. She came here after the end of a twenty year relationship and in the midst of a fight with alcohol. At Sunshine, she found hope, healing, and family. “I’m 14 years sober. I had used alcohol for self-medication, and she had had enough of me.” But when she makes up her mind to do something, she commits. In Alcoholics Anonymous, AA, you get a white chip on your first day of sobriety. Most collect several white chips on their journey. Brereton has one. “I came and did recovery here.” “When I came here, I was hearing everything I needed to hear [spiritually]. I’ve always known I am gay and figured if I have to go to hell, I’ll go to hell. That’s the way I am.” The staff and congregation offered her emotional support. “I cried my whole first year because I was so broken.” They also put her to work. “They were needing ushers and I figured I might as well.” “I’m here for everything.” Though Brereton’s only been head usher for two years, she knows every nook and cranny on the campus. She’s painted, cleaned bathrooms, vacuums the sanctuary, and arranges the sanctuary before and after each service. Her focus is laser-like. I offered to come between Sunday services (9am and 10:30am) but there is too much to do. Instead, we met in the quiet of a Sunday afternoon when everyone had cleared out. “Each service, I make sure everyone’s doing what they’re supposed to do: being nice to people. Everybody knows my name. I don’t know everybody else’s.” Ready For Anything Being Head Usher isn’t an honorary title, it comes with responsibilities that may have been unimaginable a generation ago. On a recent Sunday, a man came during a Sunday service and tried to disrupt proceedings. Eventually he tried setting a fire outside the front doors.

“I was told to go to the back, and a guy had a bag and burnt some paper. He started burning things and yelling stuff. I had people come inside and made sure we took a picture of him and the car.” The man left but later returned and egged the church. While he may be harmless, threats to the world’s largest queer church are very real. “I know everything that’s going on in here. I’m walking around and the staff will text me if they see someone who looks iffy.” There are many security measures in place and the staff has gone through extensive training. “We’re pretty much always on guard.” Love All “Our congregation is very open to new people. We make them feel welcome.” Brereton embodies the spirit and mission of Sunshine Cathedral, which is to welcome all. “If we see somebody new, we send someone out to talk to them. We had a blind man here today. He’s been here about five weeks now. We helped him through the service, get him in the Tops van. He doesn’t feel welcome everywhere.” But it’s not just the congregants that get her attention. “I have kittens. I bottle feed and tame them,” she said. She works with the Humane Society to rescue cats, helping trap, spay, and foster them. It’s a calling she literally stumbled upon. “I was going to a therapist and I looked down and there was a black blob. I touched it and it moved and it was a kitten.” The forlorn feline was only hours old. She nursed it back to health and helped find it a home. Today the cat is 14 years old and weighs twenty pounds. Cat therapy started when she began her journey of sobriety. While she does have a couple of beautiful cats at home, she’s far from being the ‘crazy cat lady.’ “I don’t collect cats. But they do offer unconditional love.” Now a retired painting contractor, she also works with the GMCSF and supports her 20-year-old daughter, who’s doing a year abroad in Italy. Peggy’s story is a story of generosity. She nourishes her soul by being there for others. Many have no idea how she impacts their lives, but that’s beside the point. In the end, she works to make the world generally, and Sunshine Cathedral specifically, a better place. She succeeds one day at a time. “It’s a safe place to be.”

Nurse Blake

Brings Shock Advised Tour to Fort Lauderdale By day, he stands by, ready to deliver two litres of epi on the rapid infuser, STAT! By night he administers the best medicine: laughter. Nurse Blake is navigating the post-pandemic world with a tour, some wine, and his entire medical family behind him. “I have so many nurses that say they want to bring more people or bring their whole staff to my show,” he told OutClique. “As long as nurses are coming together and having a good time, I’ll do it! So, if there’s a hospital in your area, I think my tour is going there.” His Shock Advised tour is coming to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on December 19, 2023. He talked with us as he was getting ready to hit the road on the five month, 100 date tour. He’s doing five dates in Florida in December, but it’s not just the weather that draws him here this time of year. “It worked out really well. My whole family is in Florida. I haven’t seen them in a long time. This tour is five-anda-half months long. I’m excited to spend the December holidays in my own state.” Shock Advised is the follow up to his The PTO Tour in 2021. Blake is a registered nurse who still practices his craft. His fellow healthcare workers pack show after show, and they get much needed relief from their very stressfilled careers. He’s also touring in a world that is far different from just two years ago. Many states, with Florida leading the way, are enacting a host of anti-LGBTQIA+ laws and created the era of Don’t Say Gay. Blake feels it, but he is pressing on. “I have a great supportive community that lets me be myself. I don’t hide it in my show. All that comes out. There are no secrets about me or my life, which is who I am. It’s nice and refreshing for an audience to see.” He knows that’s not a circumstance other LGBTQIA+ performers enjoy. “I’m definitely in a place of privilege compared to other LGBTQ+ people. I’m able to be myself and am thankful to my community for always being so accepting.”

While nurses still pack the seats, his audience is expanding. “My comedy and humor have extended outside nurses. There’s a whole array of interdisciplinary groups. People who aren’t in healthcare at all come to the shows,” he said. “It’s really cool to see my audience expand and get bigger.” Non-healthcare workers enjoy the show. While there is a lot of ‘jargon’ in the act, Blake says it’s all explained. “Even if they aren’t nurses, they can still relate to my stories. Nursing is all about people. Even though there’s specific medical terminology, I break that all down in the show.” Throughout his nursing career, Nurse Blake has brought a light touch and humor to patients. But he keeps it restrained, lest something go awry. “I don’t make someone laugh so hard that they throw a clot or stroke out. I don’t need that!” Since no one will be drawing blood or starting a line at the Broward Center, Shock Advised will be a bit more raw. “When I’m telling jokes in the hospital, they’re more G-rated. My show is 18 and up. It’s really for adults only. It’s called Shock Advised Tour, so you’ll hear jokes and words that I would never say in a hospital.” “It all comes from a place of love. Humor is important to have not just for nurses and patients but families. They have a serious, tragic moment in their life. If I can bring some levity and joy, good. They’re not going to remember some medication I gave them, but they’ll probably remember a joke or, more importantly, how I made them feel. I want them to feel good, loved, and supported.” High Anxiety He’s a comic for an hour a night, but he’s a nurse 24/7. As much as he travels, you’d think he would have been called upon to help an audience member during a show or treat a crew member backstage. “Luckily I’ve never had to do it before, during, or after a show.” But he did have to help someone while on his way to a show . . . at 35,000 feet. “I was on a plane and it was the first medical emergency I’d been called upon. I’ve been a nurse for eight years. I

was so excited! This was my healthcare moment. It was so dramatic. I was like ‘scene is safe!’ I’m a healthcare hero!” Once he got to the passenger, his heroic moment turned out to be not so dramatic. “The girl? She had an edible. She was just a little high. That’s it? That’s my story? I was ready to give CPR. I was ready to use the epi pen.” At least it wasn’t his worst-case scenario. “I just never want to give birth on a plane.” It’s Better to Give Nurse Blake is also an advocate to end bans on LGBTQIA+ blood donations. His Banned4Life campaign works to end discriminatory obstacles in place for decades. The bans can be traced back to the early 1980s and fears of HIV/ AIDS contaminating the blood supply. But that was 40+ years ago and the science has changed. “It’s definitely a discriminatory ban, not evidence based whatsoever.” “When I started Banned for Life about ten years ago, no one was really focused on it. Over the past ten years, I’ve seen a lot of changes to the policy. I think we all have. I’m so happy it’s going in the right direction.” Once he and other professionals started championing the cause, using new, researched based science, the needle began to move. “The advanced study came out and we were able to present research proving [the ban] is outdated and discriminatory.” Now his efforts are being validated. “Seeing organizations, like the American Red Cross, be involved in research studies to present to the FDA is so inspiring. While there’s so much more work to be done on blood donation in

general, I’m really hoping that we keep pushing forward.” While many restrictions remain, Blake believes it’s just a matter of time. “We like to think that change happens overnight, but it doesn’t. I’m happy I stayed with it because the FDA is definitely listening.” Merch Ado About Something Blake is building a whole empire beyond nursing and touring. He’s organizing NurseCon at Sea, a five night cruise sailing out of Port Miami on April 9, 2024 on the Norwegian Breakaway. He’ll be there doing shows, as will drag queens, other performers, and seminars for healthcare workers. “They’re the most epic cruises. Like Atlantis cruises but for nurses. They’re that much fun.” While his standup is for adults, he still connects with kids. He’s written a book, I Want To Be A Nurse When I Grow Up. Nurse Blake also has his own magazine, making him the Oprah of entertaining Nurses. The magazine has 25,000 subscribers, who can sign up through his website. “A lot of nurses come to my shows and watch my videos. I wanted to give them another medium. I’m able to tell stories from other nurses, so it’s even bigger than what I share on social media.” He also has his own line of merch. Sure, there are the usual items like sweatshirts and socks. But he’s also a vintner and is most proud of his line of wines! “I have a yummy rosé and a pinot grigio that is to die for.” The vino was inspired by both his colleagues and his grandmother. “My grandmother is a big lover of wine and I

know nurses like to drink after a long shift, so I decided to come up with a wine.” It’s called 14th Hour, mindful of the work nurses do. Nurses work twelve hours and drive home in the thirteenth hour. By the 14th hour they should be chilling with a glass of wine.” It seems sales are going well. “Nurses like to drink. We’ll set records at the bars. It’s our unhealed trauma and coping mechanism.”

Nurse Blake may not have a Kardashian-sized following on social media, and he’s fine with that. He’s a fan of quality over quantity. “I’m so lucky they’re all so positive. They support each other and me. I try to have quality followers. I don’t have time for drama and negativity.” And like his 14th Hour wines, Nurse Blake is aging like a fine, and funny, wine.

The Cher Show

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and Broadway Across America are proud to continue the 2023-2024 Broadway in Miami series with the South Florida premiere of The Cher Show (@cherontour) kicking off the new year from January 2-7, 2024. The Cher Show is 35 smash hits, six decades of stardom, two rock-star husbands, a Grammy®, an Oscar®, an Emmy® and enough Tony Award-winning Bob Mackie gowns to cause a sequin shortage in New York City, all in one unabashedly fabulous new musical that will have audiences dancing in the aisles! Superstars come and go. Cher is forever. For six straight decades, only one unstoppable force has flat out

dominated popular culture — breaking down barriers, pushing boundaries and letting nothing and no one stand in her way. Tracking the icon’s rise to fame and legendary career, three actresses will bring Cher’s story to life on stage, marking distinct phases in her life. Ella Perez plays “Babe” – the bright-eyed kid starting out; with Catherine Ariale as “Lady” – the glam pop star; and Morgan Scott as “Star” – the cultural icon. Mike Bindeman is featured in the roles of Gregg Allman and John Southall, with Tyler Pirrung as Bob Mackie/ Robert Altman/Frank, and Lucy Werner as Georgia Holt and Lucille Ball. Lorenzo Pugliese stars as Sonny Bono.

Queen of the North

Brooke Lynn Hytes

is Bringing Holiday Cheer to Miami Beach

Deck the halls with boughs of glitter, because it looks like some of our favorite queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race are sashaying their way back to South Florida this holiday season! Presented by Murray & Peter for the ninth consecutive year, A Drag Queen Christmas will play at the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater on Wednesday, December 27, 2023. Hosted by Miz Cracker and featuring winners, all stars, and fan favorites from the Emmy Award-winning show, this annual production will include outrageous performances and lip sync extravaganzas that will surely brighten your Christmas spirit. A Drag Queen Christmas kicked off November 14 in Detroit Michigan, and OutClique had the opportunity to talk more about it with Brooke Lynn Hytes, who is celebrating her third year with the tour. As the first queen from Canada to compete on Drag Race U.S., Hytes impressed us all during Season 11 with her polish, professionalism, and jaw dropping dance abilities. Although she didn’t win the crown, she arguably won something even better. Starting in 2020, Hytes landed the gig of hosting Canada’s Drag Race, following RuPaul’s footsteps. Denny Patterson: Hi, Brooke Lynn! How excited are you to be a part of this year’s Drag Queen Christmas? Brooke Lynn Hytes: I am so excited to pay my rent for the third year in a row (laughs). It’s always a big joke on the tour because I am not a festive person, and that’s not just for Christmas. I don’t really get excited for holidays, but I always seem to be put on the Christmas tour, which I feel very lucky and blessed to do because it is honestly my favorite tour to do. I love the crew and the queens I get to work with. A lot of us have done it for a couple years now, so many of us have formed this little tour family, and it’s always fun to be on the road with everybody. It’s my favorite way to travel. A lot of people don't like traveling by tour bus, but I love it because it's just so easy. You get on, you get off, you go to sleep, you wake up in a new city, and for some reason, I always sleep very well on the bus. So, I’m very excited to do this again. It’s so much fun.

Denny Patterson: Can you give us a hint as to what we can expect from your set this year? Brooke Lynn Hytes: Well, I have to tell you, I’m very upset this year because for once in my life, I came up with a brilliant Christmas number. I was so excited, and I emailed Murray and Peter being like, I’m going to do this number. They responded saying somebody has already claimed that number. Like, are you kidding me? So, I immediately called Crystal Methyd and told her I hated her. But I did come up with another idea, but it’s always a bit of a challenge because Christmas music is very limited. So, to try and do something original that's in the Christmas spirit every year is very, very hard. They usually let us do one Christmas number, and then the other doesn’t really have to be Christmassy, but this year, I’m doing two that have something to do with the season. Denny Patterson: There are many LGBTQ+ people who struggle during this time of year. What advice or words of comfort can you offer them? Brooke Lynn Hytes: You're right. This time of year is very hard for a lot of people, and I think that's why chosen family comes in as such an important thing. This is a time of year we truly realize how important it is. Many people are displaced from their real families, so I would just love to say to anybody who is feeling this way, know that you're not alone. Then to anybody who possibly knows somebody who is feeling this way, reach out and make an effort. Be like, hey, do you have somewhere to go for Christmas? You are always welcome at our place. Denny Patterson: For those who don’t know, how did Brooke Lynn Hytes come to be? How did you discover your love and passion for drag? Brooke Lynn Hytes: I think my passion for drag has always been there, even before I knew what drag or a drag queen was. It’s a tale as old as time - a little boy wearing his mother’s clothes and playing with dolls, and I was just infatuated with all that stuff. Then when I was 18 or 19, I went to school in the gay village neighborhood of Toronto, and that’s kind of the first time I was made aware of what an actual drag queen was. As soon as I was old enough to go to bars and stuff, I started experimenting with it, and the rest is history.

Celebrate New Year’s Eve at the Kravis Center with

Fortune Feimster

Charming, charismatic, and one of a kind, Fortune Feimster loves to use her confessional brand of comedy to bring people together. Although she began her ascent to popularity as a writer and panelist on E’s hit show Chelsea Lately, and has appeared in several film and TV projects such as The Mindy Project, Fubar, and Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, audiences have truly gotten to know Feimster through her comedy tours and Netflix specials, Sweet & Salty and Good Fortune. Through laughter and southern wit, Feimster hilariously dives into love, relationships, sexuality, and shared experiences from the perspective of someone who grew up in the 1980s, and she is continuing to tell her story with a brand-new tour titled Live Laugh Love, which will be performed at West Palm Beach’s Kravis Center on December 31, 2023. What better way to ring in the new year? OutClique had the opportunity to sit down with Feimster and talk more about the production and her comedic journey. Denny Patterson: Let me begin by asking, how excited are you to bring your Live Laugh Love tour to South Florida? Fortune Feimster: Oh, man, I am pumped! Especially because I don't want to be anywhere cold in December (laughs). I'm very grateful that I'll be in Florida because the weather is always excellent during that time of year, but also, every time I put out a tour, I get a lot of people in Florida fussing at me like, why haven’t you come to Florida? So, I was very excited to announce these dates, and I hope people come and celebrate with us. Denny Patterson: What can we expect from this Live Laugh Love set? Fortune Feimster: This set is a continuation of my story. That's what I've tried to do with my last two specials.

Those two specials represent very specific times in my life, and I really like that narrative and journey. This set is a whole new hour from Good Fortune. It starts off where Good Fortune ended, the pictures of our wedding and us getting pummeled by waves. This starts with our honeymoon and how that went awry. I talk about us settling into married life and figuring out how to be adults together, my parents getting older, and things you kind of deal with as you grow up. It’s a fun show. I talk to the audience and keep it interactive, and I’ve been leaning into that storytelling aspect more over the last couple years. A lot of the jokes are silly, and I’m having a lot of fun with them. People are, from what I hear, having a great time and I want people to enjoy themselves. Denny Patterson: Being considered a storyteller comedian, is it difficult for you to constantly come up with new material? Fortune Feimster: There’s kind of a pressure to make a narrative feel like a little book, where you’re reading a beginning, middle, and end, and it comes full circle. I want it to feel like I didn't just throw a bunch of jokes up. I want this to feel like something crafted, and a lot of care and time was taken with it. I’ve been telling jokes all along this tour, but now I’m entering the phase of, okay, what am I trying to say? What’s the through line? I spent five hours the other night going into my set and trying to make it feel like one big story. I'd say that is probably the biggest difference. Denny Patterson: What are you looking forward to the most about 2024? Fortune Feimster: There's a lot of cool stuff that will be happening. I'll still be touring; I'm announcing some really big theaters coming up in 2024, and at some point, the show I was filming will come back, so I'll get back to acting with that. I’ve also been working on stuff behind the scenes such as a movie and animated show. All these fun things that take a really long time to develop. I hope those projects will gain traction and people will see me branching out even more.

The 2023 New Year’s Eve Shoe Drop in Key West Each year, Key West hosts one of the world’s most unique and exciting events: The New Year’s Eve Shoe Drop! You’ve probably seen it on CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage, or you may have previously attended the festivities in person. But this year is a little different, so we caught up with one of the hosts for the event, Bria Ansara, to get the latest scoop and share her thoughts on this year’s celebration. Will White: Bria, thanks for chatting with us! Tell us what’s new with the upcoming New Year’s Eve Shoe Drop. Bria Ansara: This Year, NYE will look a little different . . . or at least the Queen in the shoe will! Last year, Key West drag icon, Sushi, made the decision to retire from her 25 year stint in the big high heel. With her approval, a new Queen has been selected: The fabulous singing and drag sensation, Christopher Peterson, who has been entertaining in her one woman show in the Crystal Room at LaTeDa for years. Will White: Sounds exciting! How long have you been a part of the New Year's Eve events in Key West? Bria Ansara: I believe my first year performing in this spectacular show was around 2013. I watched Sushi and her partner Jeff get married on that stage! I became head producer and emcee of the show in 2016, along with local Queens, Ma John and Ralphie as Stage Managers and crew. Will White: What’s your favorite part of the New Year's Eve Shoe Drop each year? Bria Ansara: Connecting with the huge crowd of people. Our show is a free show in the middle of Duval Street, with revelers standing shoulder to shoulder for two blocks in each direction. The energy from them is so electric, and it’s what the performers and I feed off of during the event. Ringing in the New Year with thousands of my closest friends! Will White: When would you recommend visitors begin arriving in Key West in order to make the most of their New Year’s celebrations there?

Bria Ansara: The week between Christmas and NYE is the busiest of the year for us. If someone is coming down specifically for NYE, give yourself at least a day before to prepare and to enjoy all that the island has to offer . . . and of course, a day after to recover. Will White: Any advice for first time Key West visitors? Bria Ansara: Come with an open mind and an open heart. There are things about Key West that make this island so special. We really are a small community that comes together to celebrate life, every day. Join us in the celebration! Talk to locals and ask for the inside scoop. Will White: What will you be doing on New Year’s Day? Bria Ansara: Wishing I was sleeping, but I’m booked to play a jazz brunch at The Reach Resort. Then I’ll go home and vacuum up all the glitter!

Varla Jean Merman Is Ready to Take a Stand It has now been a year since the outrageously entertaining drag legend Varla Jean Merman broke her kneecap and ruptured her quadricep tendon after slipping on a tic tac, but in that time, the daffy diva has worked hard to get back on her feet. Unfortunately, with the recent wave of drag bans and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, it seems that America is conspiring to once again knock Merman off her lucite heels, and she talks all about it in her new production, Stand By Your Drag, which will be performed at Sunshine Cathedral on January 5, 2024. Merman took some time to give OutClique the inside scoop about taking a stand for life, liberty, and the pursuit of non-skid breath mint, as well as how the show’s concept came to fruition, her thoughts on why drag is being villainized, and her advice to younger queens. Denny Patterson: Let me begin by asking, how excited are you to perform Stand By Your Drag at Sunshine Cathedral? Varla Jean Merman: I’m very excited because the show was obviously spawned by Florida politics, and I haven't done it here yet. Fort Lauderdale audiences are some of the best, so I’m excited to do it, and also to preach to the choir a little bit on what we've been going through with drag. Even though a federal judge has said twice now that it's unconstitutional, it’s still going to appeal and eventually go to the Supreme Court. The fight is not over, so I want to keep it aware, and the show is also not just about drag. I had an accident last year, where I slipped on a tic tac. I had these fake pills, and I would throw them in a martini glass. It got messier and messier every night, and I remember coming on stage a couple of times slipping. If you step on a tic tac, it crushes, but if you’re running, they’re like marbles. I have a funny part in my show about Miss Richfield being responsible (laughs). So, I

messed my leg up, and it took about a year to get back to normal. My show was originally going to be about survival. Survival after that accident and survival of being in the business for 35 years, but then the drag bans started to happen. Not just where I live in Florida, but also in Tennessee and Texas. So, I thought I could put this all together. Standing up myself, standing up for drag, and standing up for yourself against people’s comments and hate. Not only is this an attack on drag, but it’s an attack on our culture. No one can decide what our culture is. Denny Patterson Drag has always been a part of life and pop culture. Why do you think it has been so attacked and villainized over the last couple years? Varla Jean Merman: I talk about this in the show, and I kind of compare it to the whole Disco Sucks movement. It was very racist and homophobic, and I think the general public just got tired of having it thrown in their faces. It wasn't something they liked, and I think it made them gang up to try and get rid of it. I think the same thing is happening with drag. Drag has become so popular, and I think a lot of people don't understand it, and the whole trying to link drag to pedophilia is just so ridiculous. It does not exist. It’s to deflect from real issues, and because it’s so popular, people are getting riled up. They know there’s no validity, but people responded. I think it was a device to get people upset and riled up behind something. I talk about all of this in the show, but when your own government is coming for your career, you need to speak out. The girls that travel all the time, they have it pretty good, but it’s the girls that have to make their career in Florida. They’re the ones dealing with the madness because this crazy legislation has caused people to say, we hate that. I now get comments on my feed that I never got before. I do a section in the show about supporting local queens because they are the ones who have to deal with this. It’s terrible.

Raising the Bars “I’ll meet you at the bar.” That phrase has been used by LGBTQIA+ for decades. In many communities, you don’t need to say the name because there is only one bar in the area. But it doesn’t matter if you live in a town with one watering hole or a thriving area like Wilton Manors, our bars hold our history. Their patrons pass it down one generation, one night, one drink at a time. Now, Stonewall National Museum Archives, & Library in Fort Lauderdale is teaming up with GayBarchives to detail, preserve, and spread LGBTQIA+ history in a project called Raising the Bars. “When I started researching the history of gay bars across the country and hearing the heartfelt stories of hundreds of thousands of people who remember things that happened in the seventies or before in these bars, [the need to team up] became obvious. The marriage between GayBarchives and Stonewall began and we started tossing ideas around,” Art Smith of GayBarchives said. The announcement was made at Eagle in Wilton Manors, the heart of what many call the gayest place on Planet Earth. Stonewall is a growing collection of books, periodicals, and other media chronicling LGBTQIA+ history. Executive Director Robert Kesten says the collaboration makes sense for everyone. “Just like bars are places for people to come together, so are libraries. Libraries need to be the village greens of the future because fewer and fewer people take out books, but they still need places to call home.” Next autumn they hope to have assembled exhibitions that can go on the road to bars throughout the country. Each will be curated for the needs of the particular destination. For more on the project, visit GayBarchives.com. Author: John Hayden | Photo Courtesy of Raising the Bars
