It’s all about Love Dear Reader, As we dive into the month of February, love takes center stage in our hearts and minds. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and it’s time to consider what this day means to us. Are you making special plans with your romantic partner? Or, perhaps a parent or child? Or is it just another day? Love, in all its forms, is a force that unites us. Whether it's the love between partners, friends, parents, children or the self-love that is crucial for personal growth, February reminds us to appreciate and celebrate these bonds. You might even explore the many dimensions of love within the LGBTQ+ community, through the unique stories that shape our collective narrative. As we navigate the complexities of the world, let's remember the importance of empathy and understanding. Our community is built on the pillars of acceptance, respect, and love. In the spirit of this month, let's continue to uplift and support one another, fostering a sense of belonging that transcends boundaries. This month, let’s celebrate the power of connection, diversity, and the various forms of love that make our world a more vibrant and compassionate place. Thank you for being a part of the OutClique family. We hope this month's issue brings you joy, inspiration, and a renewed sense of connection. Together, let's make February a month filled with love and acceptance. May happiness be abounding.1 Dr. Steven 2 Publisher & Editor in Chief OutClique Magazine

Honored as a Champion of Inclusive Travel Slogans are easy to create but hard to fulfill. When Visit Lauderdale (VL) launched their Everyone Under the Sun (EUTS) campaign, they highlighted the diversity of Broward County. They have not lived up to expectations. They have exceeded them. Leading the way is Richard Gray, VL’s Senior VP of Inclusion & Accessibility. He’s being honored as one of TravelAbility’s Accessibility Champions. While people with disabilities are prominently featured in the EUTS ads, Gray’s dedication to the cause goes back much further. “Making tourism more accessible is a social responsibility and it is also a human right,” Gray told OutClique. “Accessible travel is important because it allows individuals with disabilities to have equal opportunities to explore and experience the world.” When many of us think of disabilities, we likely think of people in wheelchairs or visually impaired. It’s understandable, as those are easy to quickly identify and understand. But Gray knows there are so many more people dealing with issues. “They include autism, chronic pain, learning difficulties as well as mental health conditions, anxiety, mobility and speech impairments. It is a simple tool for you to voluntarily share that you have a disability or condition that may not be immediately apparent, and that you may need a helping hand, understanding or more time in shops, at work, on transport or in a public space.” Gray is honored by the recognition and knows it’s not just a recognition of work done, but a springboard for inclusiveness in the future. “It is a work in progress and Author: John Hayden

will take time, but Visit Lauderdale is committed to being a champion and continuing to welcome all travelers,” Gray said. “Greater Fort Lauderdale businesses, specifically in the hospitality industry, can prioritize accessibility by implementing inclusive design practices, providing training for staff on ADA compliance and disability awareness, and actively seeking feedback from disabled individuals to improve their services and facilities.” Essentially, Gray and the team at VL, are leading the way for other cities to follow and do the right thing. “There is nothing more important than to create a world that includes and respects everyone. After all, the Visit Lauderdale campaign and tagline is that we welcome Everyone Under The Sun.”

A Happy New Year for Visit Lauderdale Everything’s coming up roses for Visit Lauderdale. Broward County’s tourism arm got the attention of a nation waking up on New Year’s Day. They had a float in the 135th Annual Tournament of Roses Parade that was seen by millions. Visit Lauderdale CEO, Stacy Ritter, grew up watching the iconic procession. That love stayed with her and this fall realized her childhood obsession could be an adult accomplishment. She convinced her colleagues that showcasing Greater Fort Lauderdale would be great for the area. The only problem: time wasn’t on her side. Most Rose parade floats are planned and constructed over an entire year. Ritter and her team only had three months. “I wish that everyone knew how much work goes into this. There's no way to convey it,” she said. One of the big rules of a Rose Parade float is that every

inch of surface must be covered by organic material. More than 40,000 roses donned the float, along with wood, seeds, and other products. Designers excelled at this, and the float won The Past President Award for Most Outstanding Innovation in the use of floral and non-floral materials. The very best of Broward was represented. From the wavewall along Fort Lauderdale Beach to the skylinedominating Guitar Hotel at the Seminole Hard Rock, to rainbow colored beach umbrellas, diversity was on display. It’s the latest and greatest accomplishment of Visit Lauderdale’s Everyone Under the Sun campaign. Launched in 2022, it stresses that, despite what national headlines may say about Florida writ large, Broward County is not only inclusive, but a welcoming place for anyone, be it LGBTQIA+ to people with disabilities, to any nationality.

leBoy Celebrates 9 years of Glitter and Glory Ever since the 1950’s, Fort Lauderdale has been synonymous with the cinematic classic "Where the Boys Are”, but it’s leBoy in Wilton Manors that has been delivering on this promise. For the last 9 years, leBoy captivated audiences with its nightly spectacle of male models in barely-there jock straps, magnetic charm, and rhythmic moves. To celebrate the club’s anniversary, leBoy is hosting its first ever $10,000 Amateur Strip Contest beginning February 3, 2024. The celebration, which promises to be nothing short of extraordinary, will climax on February 7 as one lucky contestant sashays away with a cash prize of $5,000. The journey leading up to this grand finale has been marked by the distribution of $300 weekly and $500 quarterly prizes through four quarters, the last of which unfolded on New Year’s Eve. The Quarter Final Prizes set the stage for a thrilling conclusion, leaving the crowd eager for what's to come. But leBoy's allure extends beyond the dance floor. The nightclub has become a cultural hub, hosting a myriad of events that cater to diverse tastes, from fashion shows to underwear parties, to celebrity DJ performances and drag performances.

In a previous life, leBoy was Johnny's, a long-running establishment known for its twink-a-go-go boys. Then a few years ago, the club underwent a transformation, changing both its location and its name to embrace a more upscale ambiance. Now leBoy's charm extends beyond its walls, spilling out into an outdoor patio where patrons can bask in the night air while enjoying the festivities. The occasional presence of adult film stars adds an extra layer of excitement to an already exhilarating atmosphere. As the anniversary celebration unfolds, leBoy's legacy is celebrated not only for its dazzling entertainment but also for its role in fostering a sense of community and acceptance, where individuals can express themselves without judgment. As the countdown to the ninth anniversary ticks away, the excitement builds, promising a night of glamor, spectacle, and the crowning of a new leBoy legend. The boys are ready, the stage is set, and Wilton Manors braces itself for another unforgettable chapter in the dazzling story of leBoy.

Drew Sebastian

Shakes Up Tropical Bear Week Drew Sebastian is well known for his work in adult entertainment. But there is much more to him than his substantial catalog of sexy scenes. Much more. Topping his other talents is a robust singing voice. “My first career was in musical theater. I went to college for classical voice, opera. I went to musical theater from there and loved it,” he told OutClique in an exclusive interview. So just when you think you’ve seen all of him, you realize you ain’t seen nothing yet. Now he’s bringing his act to Lauderdale Tropical Bear Week, presented by Eagle Wilton Manors. The party runs Tuesday, March 5 - Sunday, March 10, 2024. Wednesday night, Sebastian brings Dad’s Cabaret to Hunters Nightclub. He says the show has a lot of jazz singing and crooning. And then there are the parody songs, like “It Had To Be Drew”, where he works in some nods to his adult work. Singing is his life’s passion. Having grown up in Knoxville, TN, he worked at nearby Dollywood as a singer and lead dancer. He moved to Houston and was in LGBTQIA+themed shows, including Naked Boys Singing. His singing career was revived during shoots. “On porn sets, between takes, I would sing. We’d be doing a scene and we’d be greased up and I’d start singing songs from Grease.” He was planning to do a few songs at a friend’s pool party, when they told him to put an entire show together and sell tickets, and Dad’s Cabaret was born. If that wasn’t enough, he’s also a highly trained chef. “I cook all kinds of stuff. I was a private chef in LA. I was the healthy chef. I would help keep people ready for the red

carpet. It was fun to cook for all different kinds of people.” His foodie handle on Instagram is @andysbites. (There’s also a clip there of him playing an alto sax) Sebastian was in Madrid when a superfan came up and recognized him from his food account. “I was all the way over in Madrid and they knew about my cooking work.” Tropical Bear Week Embraces Gay Ocho This month’s Gay Ocho festival in Miami’s Little Havana was canceled, and the future of the event is in doubt. But Tropical Bear Week is giving them a hand. Eagle WM owner Chuck King reached out and invited them to participate. “We’re thrilled to have Gay Ocho as a partner. It’s a great relationship that will keep the name moving forward.” Gay Ocho organizers will work to help with entertainment at Bears in the Park and other events.

Genesis Health Institute Spreads Holiday Cheer and Support with $26,198.34 Donation to Local Charities On the evening of December 14th, Genesis Health Institute hosted its much-anticipated annual Holiday Party, not just to celebrate the season but to make a significant impact in the community. This year, the event showcased the talents of Synergy Twins, an electrifying violin duo known for their dynamic renditions of holiday music and pop hits. Their performance added a unique and memorable touch to the evening’s festivities.

SunServe is renowned for offering critical life assistance and professional mental health services, focusing particularly on the economically disadvantaged and marginalized youth, adults, and seniors in the greater South Florida metropolitan area. This contribution marks a new chapter in Genesis’ community involvement, reflecting their dedication to addressing a broader spectrum of local needs.

In a heartfelt display of community commitment, Genesis broadened its philanthropic reach. The event raised an impressive $26,198.34, which was thoughtfully divided between two deserving organizations. A generous donation of $13,197.66 was made to Abandoned Pet Rescue (APR), continuing Genesis’ longstanding commitment to this vital cause. APR, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, stands as one of the largest no-kill animal shelters in South Florida. Over the past decade, they have provided unparalleled care to more than 6,800 cats and dogs, ensuring these abandoned and abused animals find loving homes.

Dimitri Bakoulis, Chief Operations Officer of Genesis Health Institute, expressed his enthusiasm for this year’s event, “Our annual holiday party is not just a celebration; it’s a platform to give back to our community. We’re thrilled to support both APR and SunServe this year, extending our impact to even more lives in need.”

In addition, Genesis extended its charitable efforts to SunServe, donating $13,000.68 to support their mission.

With more than $75,000 donated to APR since 2018 and a new partnership with SunServe, Genesis Health Institute continues to exemplify the spirit of giving and community engagement. The success of their December 2023 event is a testament to their unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of both people and pets in South Florida.

For Latinos Salud, Access is Activism It’s like the UPS commercials say: it’s all about logistics. For Latinos Salud, the non-profit agency that just wrapped up their 15th year serving as South Florida’s premiere LGBT community-based clinic, focusing on logistics is a form of activism. “We reduce barriers,” said Rafaelé Narvaez, co-founder of the agency. “Services only serve if you can get them when you need them.” Latinos Salud stays open later than any other HIV/STD agency or clinic in the state, to 9 PM nightly. They make it easy to book appointments on-line or over the phone, and they also take walk-ins. To their loyal members, Latinos Salud represents a safe space, one that many think of as their second home. And the number of community members who find their way to Latinos Salud as patients or clients has been growing—a lot. Even through the COVID years, Latinos Salud’s impact steadily grew. In the past four years, the agency has nearly tripled the number of gay Latinos and other LGBT

50 | OutClique.com

community members it serves. To keep up, over the past three years, the agency tripled its space in Wilton Manors, and added a new location in North Miami. Now Latinos Salud is opening the doors to its newest location, a huge upgrade for their clients in SW Miami. “We believe that access is activism,” said Executive Director, Dr. Stephen Fallon. “That’s our priority. The community’s needs outstripped the space that we’d been renting in Westchester these past five years.” Senior Health Program Manager, Johnathan Medina reviewed the strain that the enormous increase in demand had put on the agency’s small SW location. “First, we had to move staff permanently out of offices and put them desk-to-desk in the common area, so we could use those rooms for more screening, counseling, and patient sessions. Then we had to convert our conference room, and finally even convert a closet!” Fallon noted, “We started our search for a new SW

home over a year ago. We found plenty of bargainpriced, frumpy spaces for lease or sale – at the back of a crowded mall, or down the end of a desolate, industrial side road. But these would not facilitate the community’s access.” Was there enough parking? Is the location easy to get to, defined by their SW Miami service area that covers roughly from Kendall to Doral? Even the number of bathrooms and positioning mattered: “Let’s not be squeamish: we check for sexually transmitted diseases by sampling bodily fluids. No one wants to have to carry their pee specimen cup from a common hallway bathroom past shoppers in a mall, or past office clerks in a corporate condo,” Fallon said. At last, pure chance led them to just the right spot.

Latinos Salud opens the new location this month, with four times the space of their prior Westchester rental, and dozens of free parking spaces. Since Latinos Salud is much more than just a clinic, Medina proudly noted the large event space in the new location, perfect for the agency’s free community events that are sprinkled throughout the year: yoga and self-defense classes, movie and game nights, drag pageants and dance offs, food bazaars, and holiday photo shoots. (The agency also brings groups to events off site: kayaking trips, field days, beach clean-ups, historical walks, and many more.) Fallon concluded, “Investing in the resources that make services more inviting and accessible to the community right now? That’s activism.”

Call (786) 801-1803 or go to www.LatinosSalud.org or just walk in. The new SW location is at 8946 SW Bird Road, Miami, FL.

Stormy Daniels Returns as ‘For the Love of DILFs’ House Mother Adult entertainment star Stormy Daniels says hosting OUTtv’s gay dating reality series For the Love of DILFs is the best job she’s ever had, and she cannot wait for audiences to see what’s in store for Season 2. Presiding over a new cast of “Himbos” (attractive young men) and “Daddies” (handsome older gentlemen), as they search for love and compete for a $10,000 cash prize, the show became an instant hit for its larger than life cast, hilarious challenges, heartfelt romance, and of course, jaw dropping fights. Season 2 is upping the game with new twists and turns, and Daniels even finds herself in the middle of the drama. For the Love of DILFs is the most streamed original ever on OUTtv, encompassing the network's 22 year history. Season 2 premiered on January 23, 2024, with new episodes dropping weekly, and Daniels took some time to talk more about the series and her hosting gig with OutClique. Denny Patterson: With this new set of Himbos and Daddies, what can we expect? Stormy Daniels: I think that no matter how prepared you are for a show, because yes, it was the same location, same mansion, same crew, and I knew all the things, but no matter how prepared you are for the show, you just never know because the cast is always going to be different. You never know what’s going to happen, so you kind of have to be prepared to somewhat be out of the loop with that. I guess the biggest difference between Season 1 and Season 2, other than we made all these great improvements and I was more comfortable, is that the contestants coming in this time had something to reference. Season 1, nobody knew what was going on. Season 2, they can all kind of watch, and that sort of split the contestants, in my perception, into different boxes.

Denny Patterson: Is there anything you ultimately hope audiences take away from this series? Stormy Daniels: Yeah, and I’ve spoken about this a lot. Some of it is literally eye candy, and some of it is trash entertainment, although I’m the trashiest one there (laughs), but I did not expect what I really want people to take away, and that is the other side of this, which is so serious. I think everyone should pay attention to and learn a lesson from it, especially the hetero people watching. It’s how open, honest, and willing they were to have conversations about boundaries, needs, consent, and body positivity. The straight side is nowhere near having these open, blunt conversations. Especially hetero women. I cannot tell you how many straight women I know that have been married for decades and cannot have these conversations with their husband. These two guys who've never met are having a conversation that is so non-judgmental, authentic, honest, and open. Take a lesson. Denny Patterson: Is it true that OUTtv has already greenlit a third season? Stormy Daniels: That is true! We start filming in a couple months.

Stay up-to-date and connect with Daniels by following her on Twitter @StormyDaniels and Instagram @TheStormyDaniels. For the Love of DILFs Season 2 is now streaming on OUTtv Author: Denny Patterson

Since BBB SEFL processes complaints for some extremely large businesses providing service throughout North America, the complaint data needs to be considered with that understanding. For example, the home security systems, airlines, cruise, cell phone and furniture store categories receive a significant number of complaints since BBB SEFL provides complaint assistance to consumers across North America for large industry leaders in these sectors. Nonetheless, there are increases in complaints filed by consumers experiencing challenges with home security systems. BBB provides tips to help consumers protect their homes without hassles: bbb.org/article/newsreleases/2270-bbb-tip-buying-a-home-security-system. Due to the large number of people moving into and out of Florida, the moving industry (moving brokers and moving companies) also generates many complaints to your local BBB. BBB recognizes a move can be a major stressor for you and provides extensive guidance to help avoid headaches: bbb.org/all/moving. The complaints filed with

BBB SEFL against moving brokers dropped significantly from 2022 to 2023 and while we have worked closely with brokers to improve service levels, it is hard to determine if the drop is related to improved service, informed consumers avoiding poor quality moving brokers or if consumers are just going directly to moving companies. BBB SEFL complaint data also shows a slight increase in complaints filed against new and used car dealers from 2022 to 2023. Being informed and doing your research to find a good business is always essential to improve the likelihood of a positive outcome. If you are seeking to buy a used car, stop by: bbb.org/article/news-releases/14088-bbb-tipbuying-a-used-car. And if you are considering a new car: bbb.org/article/tips/14086-bbb-tip-buying-a-new-car. Remember, BBB is here to accept reviews on positive experiences and complaints if you need assistance. Sharing your experience will help reinforce positive actions by businesses and penalize businesses that do not make customer satisfaction a priority.

Automatic Renewal for the Limited-Income Senior Exemption A change in the Limited-Income Senior Exemption renewal process no longer requires seniors to sign and return a renewal card. After the initial application approval, the Senior Exemption automatically renews each year unless the senior notifies our office that they exceed the income requirement for this exemption. People who received the Senior Exemption in 2023 and are still living at the same address do not need to send in a signed renewal card to continue receiving this exemption. Our office will mail the 2024 Senior Exemption income limit information later this month as set by the state of Florida. •

If your 2023 adjusted household gross income does not exceed the amount set by the state for the 2024 tax year, you DO NOT need to do anything to continue receiving this valuable exemption for 2024. Your exemption will automatically be renewed provided you are still living at the same address and receiving Homestead Exemption.

If your 2023 adjusted household gross income did exceed the income limitation, you must notify our office that you no longer qualify for this tax year when you receive the annual income notification from our office.

Fostering a Climate-Ready Workforce MODS' EcoExplorers Internship South Florida is at the forefront of climate resilience efforts, thanks to dedicated industry experts tirelessly working to create more sustainable and resilient communities. Among these trailblazers are individuals like Dr. Jennifer Jurado, Chief Resilience Officer of Broward County, Dr. Nancy Gassman, Assistant Public Works Director, Sustainability Division, City of Fort Lauderdale, and other professionals from universities, non-profits, environmental consulting firms, corporations and municipalities. This cutting-edge work is creating hundreds of new jobs to mitigate climate change in South Florida. The key to sustaining this momentum lies in nurturing a climate-savvy workforce, particularly by engaging and preparing youth for careers in sustainability. The Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) is tackling this challenge head-on with its innovative Everglades EcoExplorers internship program, aimed at building a robust workforce capable of addressing South Florida's most pressing resilience issues.

environmental exhibits and embark on field excursions to South Florida's iconic locations, including the Everglades. These excursions allow interns to immerse themselves in the region's environmental challenges, literally getting their feet wet while gaining valuable insights. The school-year segment focuses on honing both hard and soft workforce readiness skills, such as public speaking, team building and professionalism by empowering EcoExplorers to educate Museum guests confidently.

The EcoExplorers internship is a unique, paid opportunity offered through MODS' STEM Center for Education and Career Development. Tailored for environmentally curious and passionate 10th, 11th and 12th grade students, this program spans a full year, encompassing both a summer immersion program and a school-year workforce readiness component. The overarching goal is to cultivate Environmental Ambassadors who can effectively convey the importance of environmental sustainability and resilience issues to the broader community and pursue college and careers in the sustainability field.

Over the course of the school year, an EcoExplorer dedicates approximately 300 hours to learning, training and becoming stewards of South Florida’s environment. This invaluable experience not only equips them with the knowledge and skills needed to address environmental challenges but also instills a sense of responsibility towards their community. The EcoExplorers application process opens each year in the spring at www.MODS.org.

A key component of the internship involves EcoExplorers participating in the Museum's Hub for Resilience Education. This hub facilitates career talks led by industry professionals and thought leaders in policy making, education, green building, politics and more. By interacting with these experts, EcoExplorers can ask detailed questions about pursuing a career in sustainability, gaining inspiration from the current generation actively contributing to this field.

The Sunshine Pride House, a Safe Haven for Unhoused LGBTQ+ Young Adults, Welcomes New Residents The Sunshine Pride House, a safe haven for unhoused LGBTQ+ young adults, officially opened its doors on January 1, 2024 to provide shelter, counseling, education and life skills to young adults who have been cast out by their families after revealing their sexual orientation. In an inspiring display of collaborative support and solidarity, the Sunshine Cathedral, SunServe and the FLITE Center joined the two donors and The Our Fund Foundation in their efforts to make The Sunshine Pride House a reality. The six-bedroom, four-bathroom, 2,854 square-foot duplex in Fort Lauderdale, now houses 12 LGBTQ+ young adults. The journey to remedy the perilous housing deficit began in 2020 when two donors on separate paths, yet sharing the same vision, were thankfully introduced to

The Our Fund Foundation, South Florida’s only LGBTQ+ community foundation. Michael Kalb, who championed the project from its conception, contacted The Our Fund Foundation, to discuss what could be done to address the need for solutions and whether other donors and non-profit organizations might be interested in adding their support to Kalb’s mission. “I was profoundly moved and greatly saddened after witnessing numerous young people getting kicked out of their homes,” said Kalb. “Inspired by the compassionate nature of my two daughters, I committed myself to taking action and am incredibly heartened with how we’ve been able to work together to provide safe housing, as well as the critical wrap-around services.”

Fort Lauderdale resident Terry Merlin, who was simultaneously struck by the stories and statistics surrounding the plight of unhoused LGBTQ+ young adults, felt compelled to take action. Merlin matched Kalb’s generous donation, securing the funds to fully purchase an existing property and retrofit the property. The innovative project offers comprehensive support, mentorship and a nurturing environment that empowers LGBTQ+ young adults to thrive. Wrap-around services include daily monitoring, life skills coaching, mental health counseling, educational training and job placement. “It’s been our privilege to make meaningful introductions and serve as the facilitator for this multifaceted project,” said David Jobin president & CEO of The Our Fund Foundation.

The Sunshine Cathedral, a trusted organization with more than 50 years of experience owning and managing properties, is the agency that formally acquired and owns the Sunshine Pride House. “Our congregation immediately expressed interest in supporting LGBTQ unhoused youth, a crisis that has grown over time,” said Dr. Robert Griffin, executive minister of the Sunshine Cathedral. “When we learned that The Our Fund Foundation was working on this issue, we quickly signed on as the lead agency to make this vision a reality.” Collaboration between SunServe and FLITE Center was the driving force behind the project’s early success in its beta format. FLITE Center is the statewide expert at offering comprehensive access to services for unhoused young people with a focus on transitioning them to become successful adults.

Andy Rogow

A Man of Twelve Seasons The South Florida Theater community has enjoyed tremendous growth over the past decade. Contributing to that success is Island City Stage. From a humble beginning twelve years ago, Island City Stage has consistently presented plays that entertain, make us think, and tell the stories of all letters of the LGBTQ+ alphabet. Artistic Director, Andy Rogow, speaks about the journey it took to get here. Charles Baran: Twelve years is a long time. How did it all happen? Andy Rogow: It was a happy coincidence. It was never on my radar to run an LGBTQ theater. My background, and my master’s, is in musical theater. What did I know about gay plays? first (Edward) Albee and (Christopher) Durang plays. I’m always on the lookout for the next up and coming LGBTQ+ playwright. And of course, we’d love to do another play by our very own South Florida resident, Michael McKeever.

Charles Baran: Describe your current season. Andy Rogow: This year I steered away from issue plays and politics and leaned into a couple of classics. Then added some fun, unfamiliar, works. The mood I was getting from the patrons was that they didn’t want to go to the theater to see on stage what they were reading in the news every day.

Charles Baran: Tell us about the remaining shows this season. Andy Rogow: Which Way to the Stage, running until February 11, is a show I relate to. It’s about struggling musical theater performers. It’s told in a fun way from very interesting characters. After that is Pulp, a steamy and sultry 50’s era lesbian musical set in a nightclub in Chicago. Comic and sensual. It’s directed by Nicole Stoddard. Then there’s Skintight, a dramedy about a 70-ish Calvin Klein type designer in a relationship with a 20-year-old guy with porn star looks. It’s about love, the different kinds of love. We close with Die, Mommie, Die by the incredible Charles Busch. Kris Andersson, aka Dixie Longate, plays the Busch role, an aging singer who plots to kill her husband and run off with her younger paramour. It’s a hoot.

Charles Baran: What shows are on your bucket list? Andy Rogow: We are seriously considering doing our

Charles Baran: I can’t wait to find out about Season 13. Andy Rogow: We’ve got some surprises. Stay tuned!

Charles Baran: How do you plan a season? Andy Rogow: I look for plays that fit our mission. Telling the stories of all members of the LGBTQ+ community. I scour the NY Times theater section looking for new plays that are interesting. I get recommendations from friends and board members. I work towards a balance of comedy and drama, telling a variety of stories, making sure that our community is being well served.

Is Coming to South Florida with ‘Dead Inside’ Tour Bianca Del Rio is heading back on the road, and as usual, no one is safe!

enjoy the most is touring. Getting out, seeing people, and making them laugh.

The RuPaul’s Drag Race superstar is kicking off her sixth worldwide stand-up comedy tour, aptly titled Dead Inside, where she will be entertaining the masses with her iconic lightning-fast wit and razor-sharp tongue. The tour begins February 12, 2024, and will cover everything from politics and pop culture to everyday life through the eyes of someone who can find humor in anything.

Denny Patterson: This new show covers politics, pop culture, political correctness, cancel culture - everything. It sounds like audiences are going to be on quite a ride throughout the evening. Bianca Del Rio: That’s what I always tell people. People ask, what can we expect? I often say, expect the unexpected because with the way America rolls, who knows what is going to be the topic of the day? There’s so much pre-planning for the tour itself, but as far as material, it shifts. Also, if I’m in the UK or Australia, things shift per audience. But starting in America on February 12 in San Diego, I don’t want to say it’s a little easier for me, but it’s less stressful because they can understand you. You’re not working with obscure topics. In America, there’s so much to cover.

After finishing her Unsanitized tour in 2022, Bianca is ecstatic to get back on the road, and lucky for us, she will be stopping at the Kravis Center on February 18. She recently caught up with OutClique to talk more about the show, as well as other recent projects, commemorating a decade since winning Drag Race, and valuable advice she has for aspiring drag queens. Denny Patterson: Bianca! How excited are you to embark on your Dead Inside tour? Bianca Del Rio: I’m super excited! I’ve been home for a minute, and it’s crazy because since Drag Race, which has now been 10 years, so we’re aging ourselves, I haven’t really taken a break. I would do tour after tour after tour, and this is my sixth solo tour to hit the road, which is wild. Since I had a year off, I thought this would be the perfect time to do some television work and some movies, and then there’s a strike! So, I rearranged my house, had foot surgery, combed some wigs, and now I’m like, I need to get out on the road again. Of course, everything is back to normal. It is what it is, but honestly, without being too complimentary to myself, what I do best and what I

Denny Patterson: What about George Santos being removed from Congress? Bianca Del Rio: Oh, honey! That queen! And then she brought up her boyfriend recently, I can’t. Talk about a drama queen. There are so many useless gays in the world, and I must say, I think he’s on top of the list. Denny Patterson: Like you mentioned earlier, it’s been 10 years since you competed and won RuPaul’s Drag Race. Do you have any plans to celebrate this occasion? Bianca Del Rio: Darienne Lake, Courtney Act, Adore Delano, and I watched our season when it was airing at these viewing parties at every gay bar, but it’s all kind of blurred because alcohol was involved. That’s the only

time we watched the episodes, and we said in 10 years, we would all get together and rewatch it again, just to witness the chaos. We haven’t organized it yet, but we’re hoping to do so soon. It’s crazy, not just because it was 10 years ago, but also how much the show has changed and how much we’ve all changed. I think it’ll be fun to look back. Every now and then, I’ll get tagged in some crazy clip, and I’ll go, wow, we were ruthless compared to the kumbaya of everyone now! Everyone is very happy, loves themselves and each other - we didn’t. We were ruthless, and I’m hoping to relive it again. In some ways, it feels like 30 years ago, and other ways, it feels like yesterday. Denny Patterson: A project you were involved with last year, and I honestly could not get enough of it, was Hulu's Drag Me to Dinner. What was that experience like for you? Bianca Del Rio: A hoot! I got a call from Neil Patrick Harris, and I'm not trying to sound fancy because I do have his phone number, and he asked if I would be interested in doing this show. I was like, sure, what does it involve? He’s like, well, it’s basically drag queens throwing dinner parties, blah, blah, blah, and I said, I’m not interested in being a contestant. He’s like, no, we thought of you as a judge. Then I thought to myself, well, that’s challenging. How dare they assume I would pass judgment on another drag queen (laughs). But the big issue was timing, and Neil said they would move it around to best fit my schedule. So, it was lovely. We filmed in New York for two weeks, and I got to see a lot of friends of mine. I’m hoping for another season.

Denny Patterson: I also love that you finally got to host Drag Race’s weekly recap show, The Pit Stop. Bianca Del Rio: Yes! I’ve been asked for quite some time to host, but once again, I was always on the road. The Pit Stop is a big commitment, and doing those two seasons back-to-back was about six months of my life. Now that I live in Palm Springs, it was six months of me going back and forth to LA, and you can’t review the show until it’s been edited. It was a fun experience, and it was great to kind of connect with the new Drag Race audience. I mean, there are 16-year-old scholars who know the show up and down. Denny Patterson: For real, and it’s exciting that Trixie Mattel is returning to host. Who would you like to see take over the show at some point? Bianca Del Rio: Oh, God. Anybody who’s entertaining and doesn’t take themselves seriously. Denny Patterson: I think Alyssa Edwards would be a good choice. Bianca Del Rio: She'd be a hoot, but she would talk about everything but the show. You’ve got to rein her in because she will go off to la la land. But if we’re talking about an ideal duo, let’s put Alyssa Edwards and Miss Vanjie together. Talk about a trainwreck! Denny Patterson: We’d go from a 30-minute episode to two hours! Bianca Del Rio: Exactly! Talking about nothing, and subtitles everywhere.

Bouvèé Babble We love the nightlife!

Wilton Manors, and more specifically, Wilton Drive has no shortage of entertainers, specifically cabaret performers that are live-singing and all-request based. Many may not know that I have been performing in the Wilton community for almost 10 years. However, nearly 6 of those years were only seasonal and in pants behind a piano. That’s right, Miss B plays piano too :) I remember a time before Covid when the city was just as vibrant, but it does seem like we are at the center of a performer renaissance! This is not to say, “out with the old and in with the new”. In fact, quite the contrary. From newcomer Natasha Ricketts to firmly established Brian Mason who has made a name for himself as a solo performer over the last year, the community is constantly supporting a vibrant cabaret scene. This kind of thriving, and growing, scene does indeed put us on par with many of the famous LGBTQIA+ cities like Provincetown, Puerto Vallarta, and Palm Springs. I would be remiss if I did not comment on one major difference between Wilton Manors and the aforementioned communities; the shows presented in those respective towns are all ticketed. People have asked me about this topic often and I admittedly go back and forth on the subject. There are benefits to ticketing; for example, the venue would

transfer the cost of the entertainment to the price of the ticket. Said ticket money can also make for much more of a significant pay base for the performer. However, ticketing comes with some negative aspects as well, like creating the demand for the performer to constantly sell tickets (often referred to as barking for sales on the street before shows), and ticket sales often diminish or eliminate altogether possible tip revenue. I don’t know if a change is called for at this time, but it would be worth mentioning that I have seen bars across the nation add a $5 p/p entertainment fee to patrons’ bills. This fee, at least in the three bars I am thinking about (one in Naples, one in Detroit, and one in Chicago), is added only when there is any form of entertainment on stage, and if a certain tab threshold is not met. This does indeed help supplement the performer base and create a shared culture between patrons and venue in financing some of the best entertainment around. It also grants access to a better living wage for cabaret performers. It is something to think about. While I don’t pretend to speak for all of my cabaret colleagues, I would imagine they support me in saying THANK YOU to the entire community for keeping live vocalists employed! Enjoy this special time in our history. Ever grateful!!!

Which Way to the Stage Island City Stage

Broadway superfans Jeff and Judy eagerly await their idol Idina Menzel after her performance in If/Then at the stage door every night. But when a sexy stranger enters the scene and upends their decades-long friendship, the musical theater aficionados have to go off book to rewrite their own finale in Island City Stage’s production of Which Way to the Stage by Ana Nogueira. This playful yet profound comedy about friendship, ambition, and what happens when dreams fall just out of reach runs through February 11, 2024. "When I first encountered Which Way to the Stage, I knew it would be perfect for our audience. It's a love letter for musical theatre fans, of course,” said Andy Rogow, artistic director of Island City Stage. “What makes this play especially engaging, however, is the deeper dive into the competition created by the two best friends, one a gay male who often performs in drag, and the other a straight female, and the challenges they face auditioning for jobs they don't get because they don't fit their gender stereotypes. It was so relatable to me because musicals were my life; I have a master’s degree in musical theatre. Like the character Jeff, I had trouble getting many of the roles I wanted because I was too ‘gay.’”

Set in 2015, Which Way to the Stage introduces outspoken best friends since college Jeff and Judy who are regulars at the stage door and take pride in their vast knowledge of the theater. Aspiring performers themselves, the duo soon face the music inadvertently by revealing the insecurities underneath their carefully constructed facades. As new relationships are formed and the story digs deeper, so does the insightful examination of gender, sexuality, and drag. Do the two ever meet their idol? Can they reconcile their differences of opinion? And what happens next? Which Way to the Stage stars Matthew Buffalo (Jeff), Sofia Porcel (Judy), Clay Cartland (Mark) and Gaby Tortoledo (Actress/Bachelorette/Casting Director). Island City Stage’s 12th Season opened with sold out performances of Love! Valour! Compassion! Other shows this season include Pulp by Patricia Kane; Music by Amy Warren & Andre Pluess with lyrics by Patricia Kane (Apr. 11 – May 5); Skintight by Joshua Harmon (May 30 – Jun. 23) and Die! Mommie Die! by Charles Busch (Aug. 29 – Sept. 22).

Dan Levy’s Good Grief Is Heartfelt, Funny, and Real Dan Levy, who is best known for creating Schitt’s Creek alongside his father and playing the iconic role of David Rose, is no stranger to the world of entertainment. However, Netflix’s new film, Good Grief, is a major first for the four-time Emmy winner. Not only is this Levy’s feature directorial debut, but it is also the first time the actor has handled much more sensitive material and played a character in a more emotionally difficult situation. “This was a very meaningful project,” he says. “I never thought I would make a movie, and when this idea came to me, it felt significant enough to explore, write, and then to make.” Starring Levy as Marc, his world is shattered when his husband Oliver (Luke Evans) unexpectedly dies. Accompanied by a painful revelation, Marc and his two best friends, Sophie (Ruth Negga) and Thomas (Himesh Patel), take a soul-searching trip to Paris that cracks open several hard truths they each needed to face. “I have been lucky enough to not have a lot of grief in my life, so when I was confronted with grief, it felt very foreign and I didn't know if I was doing it properly,” Levy explains. “Then I felt a tremendous amount of desire to honor, in my case, my grandmother, and all I felt like I could do was to write something that spoke to an experience that had nothing to do with her, but it had everything to do with how I was feeling. I guess I was trying to kind of build a bridge to let other people in on my experience, or at least comfort people. Hopefully, they'll find elements of the movie relatable in a way that might make them feel less alone if they're in the process of grieving. So, although this was an incredibly meaningful experience, it was also

a fun one. We had a great time making it, and you can feel that joy balancing the grief all the way through.” According to the actor, since audiences primarily know him for his Schitt’s Creek character, he says it was a bit challenging to step outside his comfort zone and show a different side to his acting skills. “It was in the sense that I had to shake a bunch of bad habits and play someone completely different,” Levy recalls. “That's the challenge of acting, ultimately. If we're lucky, we get roles that are quite different from one another. So, it was a great challenge to step outside of a character that so many people have come to know me as.” In addition to exploring the complicated dynamics within the trio and rediscovering who you are after a great loss, the film also introduces Marc to the possibility of new love in the form of Theo, played by French actor Arnaud Valois. Co-star Patel hopes that audiences will feel less lonely after watching Good Grief. “Movies that touch on subjects like grief, I’ve found them to be very meaningful,” he says. “I feel less alone when someone articulates something you’re feeling and puts it up on a screen in a way that you never could imagine.” Negga agrees. “I just hope audiences have a nice time,” she exclaims. “When I was watching, I felt a very deep gratitude for my friends who understand my own particular madness. It’s about finding your people.” Good Grief is now streaming on Netflix.

Miss Richfield 1981 Talks ‘Bad Advice’

Dedicating her life to the friendly citizens and responsible merchants of her hometown of Richfield, Minnesota ("where butter is a spice and gravy is a beverage"), Miss Richfield 1981 is a drag legend. This Midwestern maven is consistently captivating theater audiences through an interactive format that blends homespun warmth and edgy improv, resulting in her live performances receiving critical acclaim. In addition to selling out venues throughout the U.S., Miss Richfield is the bestselling act each summer in Provincetown, filling the Pilgrim House five nights a week. She also remains a headline attraction with Atlantis Events cruise ships and resorts. On February 17, 2024, Miss Richfield will be coming to Sunshine Cathedral with her latest production, Bad Advice, where she unpacks a healthy heap of advice that promises to leave audiences entertained, and maybe a little annoyed. She took some time to talk more about it with OutClique. Denny Patterson: What can audiences expect with Bad Advice? Miss Richfield: Well, it might be surprising because I don't really offer bad advice to people. I talk a little bit about my own bad advice, but I don't offer bad advice. In writing the show, one of the things I decided to talk about is drag and the crazy laws that are being passed. How I came to talk about it is because I have been invited several times by the people of Richfield to read to children at the Richfield Library, and I really enjoyed it. It was such a fun experience because not only did children attend, but parents and former classmates of mine. They enjoyed it as much as the kids. So, I was very disappointed when that became a flashpoint of the arguments against drag. Then I thought, some people are getting some bad advice here, so we need to talk about that. The audience and I play a game with that, which I think is super fun, so you learn something as well. I also have a fun video that features my mother, who has been gone now for a few years. This video is from a show that was almost 10 years ago, and it fits into Bad

Advice so well. It has been such a joy to see my mom, and it’s kind of a highlight of the show for me. Feeling like she’s there with me. Denny Patterson: Is there anything you ultimately hope audiences take away from this production? Miss Richfield: Yes! I give some good advice at the end, and it’s nonpartisan. That’s what I hope they take with them, and I found the perfect song that goes with it. A friend of mine, he’s actually my pianist in Minneapolis, said out of the blue, have you ever heard this song? It’s an old song from the late 60s, it was done in 1969, and he thought it would be a good Miss Richfield song. I was looking for a song for the show, and it was one of those times where the universe hands you something. You don’t expect it, it just happens. So, when people leave, they’ll leave on a high note with a great message.

Get in the Habit of Laughing at Sister Act Slow Burn Theatre Company presents Sister Act, the divine feel-good musical comedy smash hit, in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts from Saturday, February 3 through Sunday, February 18, 2024.

In a review of the Broadway production, which was nominated for five Tony Awards including Best Musical, the New York Times reported, “When the wimples start quivering, the pinched mouths break into sunbeam smiles, and the nuns start rocking to raise the Gothic rafters, all’s right in the kingdom of musical comedy at ‘Sister Act.’ Who could resist the vision of a stage full of saintly sisters flaring their gams in unison like the Rockettes, or swiveling their hips, Supremes style, to the silken beat of an R&B tune?” In a cast second to nun, Mandi Jo John makes her

company debut in the role of Deloris and is joined by Paulette Olivia, Matthew Korinko, Ryan Crout, Darius J. Manuel, Chaz Rose, David L. Murray Jr., Gianfranco Imbert, Natasha Ricketts, Mikayla Cohen, Ellie Pattison and Ashley Rubin. Performance times vary with an open captioned performance generously underwritten by the Amaturo Family Foundation on Sunday, February 11 at 2 p.m. in which spoken dialogue scrolls across a digital screen as the action takes place on stage. The 2023/2024 Slow Burn Theatre Company Season is presented by American National Bank and continues with The Prom (March 23-April 7) and The SpongeBob Musical (June 8-23).

Based on the hit 1992 film, the musical follows disco diva Deloris Van Cartier, who witnesses a murder and is placed in protective custody in the one place the cops think she’ll never be found - a convent. Brett Karlin Artistic Director and Conductor Master Chorale of South Florida 106 | OutClique.com

If a song cracks the top forty, it could have a brief pop culture moment. Big hits may stay at the top of the charts for weeks or maybe even months. But a selection that remains recognizable and relevant for centuries? That is a true masterwork. Celebrating these compositions is the work of Master Chorale of South Florida and its artistic director, Brett Karlin. “Master Chorale is the only symphony-chorus in

town that can perform these pieces of music that have been popular for centuries,” he told OutClique in an exclusive interview. The organization is preparing for its final two shows of the season and they are not letting up on challenging material. “The first is an enormous classical masterwork, a monolith of western classical music. This is Mozart’s Great Mass in C-Minor.”

OutClique.com | 107

Classical music lovers and casual fans are likely more familiar with another of Amadeus’ great pieces, Mozart’s Requiem. Both have something in common and Karlin believes this is a perfect choice. “Mozart’s Requiem was left unfinished. His Mass in C-Minor was also unfinished but it’s an extraordinary piece of music. It’s like Mozart’s Requiem on a grander scale. Mozart’s Requiem on steroids.” Master Chorale will perform the piece at Coral Ridge Presbyterian on Friday, April 5, 2024, and at St. Joan of Arc in Boca Raton on Sunday, April 7. Karlin and company will finish their season with their Concert For A Cause, Considering Matthew Shepard by Craig Hella Johnson. The work includes Shepard’s own

108 | OutClique.com

words, interviews with his parents, media reports of his murder, and poems. Those shows come at the start of Pride month, Friday May 31 and Saturday June 1, 2024, at Sunshine Cathedral. Master Chorale, Master Class While parts of classical works are recognizable to many, few have heard the entire masterwork or understand how and why it was written. Karlin’s mission is to help people understand and, therefore, appreciate the music. “I strive to program and introduce music to help people be active listeners. When we at Master Chorale perform, I’m giving a guided tour of the music to the audience in real time before we play it.”

Before presenting the entire piece, Karlin talks to the crowd and has the musicians play excerpts. “It allows the listener to be educated and active in their listening experience. They know what to listen for, they have the cultural and political context surrounding the initial composition. I believe that leads to a more rewarding experience.”

In the end, it’s an experience that’s extremely valuable and not easily replicated. “Having the opportunity to witness a band of humans join together and literally create harmony with each other is an awesome, extraordinary experience. Witnessing music happen, on stage, live is irreplaceable.”

Broadway Besties Hit The Parker They’ve starred together in two of the 21st century’s biggest Broadway hits, Hamilton and In the Heights. Now, Mandy Gonzalez and Javier Muñoz aren’t throwing away their shot to hit the road together and wow South Florida audiences. The Broadway besties are coming to The Parker on Saturday, February 17, 2024. Both stars talked with OutClique about their collaboration, Top of the World, and becoming best friends under the glare of the theater world’s brightest lights. “It’s a celebration of our friendship, the roles we’ve played on Broadway and the shows we’ve done together,” Gonzalez said.

I went back into Hamilton and, in between, we’ve had so much life go on.” It’s a celebration of the roles, not a recreation, an important distinction for Muñoz. “There’s no character here. You’re just you.” Gonzalez was the one who came up with the idea and held his hand as their vision took shape. “She opened the door and I walked through. I realized this is great! I love this!”

Top of the World is replete with fan faves, including his version of “My Shot” from Hamilton and “Defying Gravity" from Wicked. Also, start practicing your best chair-dancing moves. While the show is filled with Broadway hits, this is not a Broadway vibe. Muñoz and Gonzalez want people singing along, tapping their feet, and dancing. “There’s a lot of singing with the audience. It’s not a show where you just sit there. We want you to engage. We want you to sing with us and dance. It’s a celebration,” she said. “If you know the words, we want to hear you singing,” Muñoz said. “Give us your best singing-in-the-shower voice!” If fans want to come in costume and makeup, she’s here for it. But, having played the very green-faced Elphaba, she has a warning. “When I first started Wicked, they told me to take off the green makeup. There was a certain soap, but it didn’t really work. If you do go green, make sure you have the things to take it off.”

thing. We really like each other. That’s a special thing. He’s like my brother and my family.” They want that family feeling to come from the audience as well. They’ll be mixing in some pop music and other hits young people will know. They want the show to be accessible to young people, and show them music and the arts are important and achievable. “Music is everyone’s language. Everyone speaks music,” he said. “One of the greatest ways to expose a young person to musical theater is to take them to a concert first, and let them experience the music out of context. Let them experience the joy and music as it is. Then take them to a show.” “We like to let young people know that a life in the arts is possible,” Gonzalez said. “They come and ask questions. Singing with us and being part of the show is something that is beyond important.” After the show, keep an eye out for them on Wilton Drive. Like after a Broadway gig, they enjoy going out for a little post-show celebration and relaxation. “We always go out to celebrate with a martini or a Manhattan.”

A Rare Friendship The bond between them is so undeniable, it’s easy to assume this is a common thing among theater superstars. They say it’s incredibly rare. “We have this love that explodes from the stage,” Muñoz said. “If you spend two seconds with us, you’re gonna feel it.” Gonzalez echoed that sentiment. “That’s not a usual

It’s all part of their dedication to the communities they visit. They use local musicians in the production and celebrate the city they’re in. Of course, after party drinks depend on how they feel and how quickly they have to move on. But, if they feel the love during the show, they’re probably more likely to step out afterwards. The moral: work on your chair-dancing, take the energy they give you, and have fun.

Stonewall Gala 2024 Standing on the Shoulders of Heroes Not every South Florida Gala invites you to be part of LGBTQ+ history, but on February 24, 2024, at the Venue in Wilton Manors, you can do just that and become part of the permanent archival record at Stonewall National Museum, Archives, & Library. There will be dinner and an open bar, as you might expect, but we will introduce two national campaigns transforming the way we look at our community and present ourselves to the world. We want you to be part of the “uprising”. We do this as we approach the 55th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising (June 29, 1969) and as our nation determines its future this November. We need your voice, and we need your support to ensure everyone in our community has access to the information they need to make informed decisions about their future. At the gala we will be doing all this with food, drink, a lot of music, and very little pontification. We will pay tribute to Diana Nyad, whose steadfast determination has made her a global example of living your dream and making the impossible possible. Her cry “never give up” is the underlying story of our community’s history from Stonewall to today. The stars of the HBO MAX film, The Stroll have made their mark as survivors. As young LGBTQ+ youth they were kicked out of their homes, lost their jobs, and yet they made it and are changing the lives of other young

people who look to them as role models. Stacy Ritter, president and CEO of Visit Lauderdale, is a government official who insists that everyone is family when they come to Broward County. Her insistence that our community is her community has made her the standout business leader in the state of Florida. Stacy does not back down, she doubles down, and we are all better for it. And, special guest, Zander Moricz who gained fame when he talked about his curly hair after being forbidden to say he was gay at his high school graduation, has now taken on the president of the Sarasota School Board in a viral “educational” moment that no one should miss. This Harvard student puts it on the line and showing up for him ensures the next generation of leaders will be ready. Stonewall is yours; our vast library, archives, and museum belong to the LGBTQ+ community. We are here to tell your story, to share the materials and history we collect and to intertwine our history into the fabric of American and world history. You have the opportunity of a lifetime to be part of this historic moment when lightning will be caught in a bottle, right here in Wilton Manors. Do not stand on the sidelines when you can be those shoulders we stand on. This is your opportunity to be a hero. NYC Cabaret Star Anne Steele Comes to Sunshine Cathedral Boys will be boys, and Anne Steele will be right by their side singing their songs. One of the brightest stars of New York’s vibrant cabaret scene, she’s taking her show, Where the Boys Are, on the road. It would be remiss for any tour bearing that name to skip Fort Lauderdale, the home of the cinematic classic of the same title. “It’s all songs that were either written or recorded by men.” Steele is appearing at Sunshine Cathedral Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 8pm, and people of a certain age will be able to sing along with her. Songs include Boys of Summer by Don Henley, Peter Gabriel’s In Your Eyes, and more, including As Long As You Love Me by the Backstreet Boys. She’s chosen these songs because the notes, the lyrics, the rhythm, all trigger memories. Songs transport us back

126 | OutClique.com

to the time in our lives when we heard them all the time on radio or television or, now, streaming. “I always say music is the most powerful thing in the world. I can remember, when I hear I Drove All Night by Cyndi Lauper, being at the public pool, the green tile walls in the changing room. It takes me there immediately and that feeling of getting ready for the pool. It’s that feeling of transporting you,” she told OutClique. “Music does that for all of us, but especially certain songs that hit you. Now this is me telling the story through music.” She originally planned to launch Where the Boys Are in 2020. Pandemic delayed the curtain by three years. Time made the heart, and the notes, grow fonder. “I was so thrilled, you have no idea. I was thinking about launching this show for three years to get it out there. It felt really

great and now we’re touring with it,” Steele said. Like many people, COVID altered her outlook on the world. “It did change a bit. We all changed so much during the pandemic. The way I look at music has changed a lot. I don’t take anything for granted. I have a different perspective.” Maturing Through Music The iconic lyric says ‘life is a cabaret.’ For Steele, a cabaret is life. Now a Cabaret Queen, she’s a long way from her childhood home of Shelbyville, IN, outside Indianapolis. While not overtly anti-LGBTQIA+ in the eighties and nineties when she was growing up, there wasn’t a lot of cultural support to help her figure out who she was. “Being an out lesbian, I didn’t understand my sexuality when I was young. I was so drawn to songs done by men and didn’t know why that was so important to me. Now, knowing that I’m a lesbian and knowing, at that point, it was men singing about women and loving women and longing for women and the beauty of a woman. I didn’t know why that meant something to me at that point. Now, of course, I do.”

Her big break came in 2010, in the form of a talent contest called Metro Star. Like The Voice but for cabaret singers. Steele won a fully produced show and album. The New York Times reviewed her show, leading to an extended, sold out run. Then a blast from the past affected her future. Opryland started doing cruises and began booking her. Now Steele’s high seas resumé includes work on Atlantis, RSVP, and Our Family Vacations. Amongst all that, she still produces several new shows a year. One, like Where the Boys Are, is meant for touring. A version of this show, but featuring songs written or performed by women, could be next. She’s also working on a Barry Manilow tribute show, Back to Barry. She knows her audience. After her show at Sunshine, she hopes to hit up Wilton Manors. She knows the gayborhood well and, like in NYC, will go out to local cabaret bars. That’s where she feels most at home.

After graduating from Ball State University, she moved to Nashville and auditioned at one of music’s most sacred spaces: Opryland. The experience changed her trajectory. “I decided not to get my masters and was gonna move to New York. I’d never had a job other than performing.” She decided to hone an essential skill for working in NYC. “I worked at Chili’s for about six months and did the Christmas show at Opryland Hotel and then I moved to New York in 1997.” She worked at the iconic Don’t Tell Mama piano bar for about 13 years. “It was a great way to audition and make a lot of money.” Like many others, she had dreams of making it big on the Great White Way, but it wasn’t meant to be. Accepting that, she realized other, better doors would open. “I got close to Broadway many times and never quite made it. So, I started doing my own shows. I was sick of trying to be somebody else. I wanted to be myself for a minute. I feel when you’re dealing with piano bar performers, we’re just being ourselves. I’m not playing a part. I’m playing myself.”

South Florida Symphony Orchestra Celebrates 200 Years of Beethoven’s Monumental Masterpiece – Symphony No. 9 Ode to Joy! In a milestone musical event, South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), led by Sebrina María Alfonso, will pay passionate homage to Beethoven, one of classical music’s most revered composers, with a 200th anniversary celebration of his monumental choral masterpiece, Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125! One hundred voices from South Florida Symphony Chorus and Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida will join soloists Elizabeth Caballero (soprano), Rebecca Ringle Kamarei (mezzo-soprano), Adam Diegel (tenor), and Luis Ledesma (baritone) for two performances on March 1, 2024, at the Tennessee Williams Theatre in Key West and on March 3 at Broward Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA) in Fort Lauderdale. Both shows will start at 7:30 p.m. “When Beethoven added vocals to what would be his final symphony, he unwittingly changed the course of classical music forever and, in the process, created what is often cited as the greatest piece of music ever written,” said Maestra Alfonso. “Today, his magnificent Ninth continues to captivate audiences worldwide and has come to define our understanding of symphonic music as grand, opulent, powerful works of art.” Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 premiered in 1824, Vienna, to an enthusiastic audience. During its composition, Beethoven was steadily losing his hearing and by the time of its premiere, he was profoundly deaf. He never heard a note outside his own imagination. Various accounts

maintain that he had to be directed to face the audience during the performance to see its appreciation. Alfonso added, “The sheer emotional power that courses throughout Symphony No. 9 can elicit uncharted feelings, creating a sense of wonder and awe in listeners and I look forward to our audience experiencing this profound connection. The momentous ‘Ode to Joy’ finale, which will be performed by a chorus of 100, is a testament to the resilience of our shared humanity when we stand united. What a thrill it will be for SFSO to commemorate 200 years of this extraordinary masterpiece with our audiences!” Complementing these milestone performances will be a selection of moving operatic arias from Bizet’s Carmen, Puccini’s La bohème and Turandot, Bellini's Norma, and Delibes’ Lakmé. This musical celebration hits its crescendo on the evening of the SFSO’s annual gala, the organization’s largest fundraising event of the year. Coming off its highly acclaimed 25th anniversary season, South Florida’s largest symphonic orchestra continues to inspire audiences of all ages. Upcoming concerts include masterworks from Bernstein, Schubert, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky and more, including a SFSO premiere - Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Clarinet Concerto.
