The Big D Dear reader, Happy New Year! I don’t know about you, but I’m excited about 2024. I believe in resolutions. Make goals, write them down, and stick to them. But there is one requirement most people don’t like. The big “D.” Oh, it’s not the one you had on your Naughty or Nice list. It’s Discipline. I know, that word alone brings back memories of math classes, detention, or maybe punishment. But in reality, Discipline is an important part of life, as it helps us develop self-control and teaches us to take responsibility for our actions. Discipline teaches us to stay focused, organized, and motivated, and allows us to set and achieve goals. Discipline also helps us to form good habits that lead to a happier, healthier, and more successful life. It’s important to write down your resolutions and goals because it helps to give you focus and clarity on what you want to achieve. It provides structure and direction that can help you stay motivated and on track. We live in a fast paced, high stimulus culture. There are some nights you have to say, “This will be here tomorrow, I have to go home and do laundry.” Money goes fast, and it’s a constant watch on spending, saving, credit cards, and retirement plans. Balance your diet, exercise, sleep, and work. So many I talk to don’t monitor their insurance (home, life, car, health). And most of all, be disciplined in the relationships you have. The people in our lives are what matters the most. Treat them well and make good choices of who you spend time with and who you give your heart to. Make 2024 awesome. You deserve it. May happiness be abounding.1 Dr. Steven 2 Publisher & Editor in Chief OutClique Magazine

Turning the Beat Around with DJ Ronnie Minutella Great DJs know how to read the room, mix on the fly, and blend the sounds of today with those of the 80’s and 90’s. It’s a gift. And DJ Ronnie Minutella, the resident DJ at NO Manors, has it in abundance. I recently met with Ronnie to discuss his very impressive career. Charles Baran: Tell me about yourself. Ronnie Minutella: I grew up in Rockland County, New York, and moved to the city in the 80’s. I started going to the big gay clubs: Twilo, Palladium, the Roxy. I was also lucky enough to experience the best DJs at the time: Frankie Knuckles, Peter Rauhofer, and Junior Vasquez. On top of that, I got to see Madonna, Cher, Whitney Houston, Jennifer Lopez and Deborah Cox come to these clubs and perform. Charles Baran: How soon did you start DJ-ing? Ronnie Minutella: When I first came to the city, with a BS in Accounting and an MBA in Finance, I worked for the top magazine publishing companies. In fact, I helped launch George magazine in 1995 where, as VP and General Manager, I worked directly with JFK Jr. It was the early 90’s when I started to DJ. Charles Baran: Tell us about that. Ronnie Minutella: When I was introduced to DJ Billy Carroll my life took a turn. I began carrying his record bags to gigs and got to hang out with him in the DJ booth. Occasionally he’d let me spin a few tracks. He’s my best friend and mentor and I owe my DJ career to him. Charles Baran: Did you quit your day job? Ronnie Minutella: No! I was working five days a week, then on Fridays I’d race to Champs where, thanks to Billy, I had a Friday night residency. Things started to happen for me. I received some nice press in HX and Next Magazines and started to DJ at other clubs like Splash. I felt like I had just won the lottery. Author: Charles Baran

Charles Baran: You were the star DJ at the Pavilion on Fire Island in the 90’s. Ronnie Minutella: And I still had my finance job! After my Friday night gig at Champs, I’d jump on the seaplane on Saturday so that I could DJ that night, then DJ at the Blue Whale for Tea Dance on Sunday, and back at work on Monday. I was living my best life ever. Charles Baran: You took a break from DJ-ing right? Ronnie Minutella: In the early 2000’s I made the tough decision to devote all my energy to my corporate career. Then, in 2021, I moved to Fort Lauderdale. I was fortunate to secure a number of pool parties and DJ’d for FLoatarama. This September, I was chosen to be the resident DJ at NO Manors. It’s a great new place with a NYC underground vibe. I love giving back to the gay community. Charles Baran: You are quite the inspiration! Ronnie Minutella: I am grateful. And I believe the best is yet to come!

Leather Community Celebrates New Mr. Ramrod We’ve all seen pageants where they announce that the first runner up will accede if the original winner is unable or unwilling to fulfill their duties. It seems perfunctory and pro forma.

While he has lived in several cities in his life, his connection to the Ramrod goes back to his youth. “The first leather bar I walked into was the Ramrod. I was 22 and visiting here,” he told OutClique.

However, sometimes the unexpected happens.

Will is also a very visible member of South Florida’s larger LGBTQIA+ community. For the past eight years, he’s run Mint Massage. He has also done layout work for nonprofits, specializing in business and development.

That was the case with Mr. Ramrod 2024. Just a couple of weeks after being crowned, Scott Jordan resigned his title. Leatherman Will was ready and willing to step up. “Shock. Why? I could not believe it. Followed by overwhelming joy. Then I was concerned, what happened? Plus, I thought what a gift it was to come in the first runner up, because if I had not done that, I would never know the weaknesses that I have.” During the competition in October, Will campaigned on increasing fellowship in the leather community. “Fellowship creates family. Families create attraction for the younger people. Everyone wants to be loved.” Now that he has the title, he has an action plan. “I have every intention and desire to expand our leather community through a set of inclusive and diverse events, groups, and gatherings. These efforts will create fellowships which in turn will promote unity for more families and volunteer work in our leather community.” Author: John Hayden

“At the nonprofit I got to help a lot of people. I also realize I like the personal one-on-one relationship building too.” One of his key duties is representing Ramrod at International Mister Leather (IML) in Chicago over Memorial Day weekend. Mr. Ramrod titleholders have a long history of finishing in the top ten. Will knows expectations are high. “I had an idea in my head prior to this Mr. Ramrod title of what I want to do and what I want to present at IML. The first goal was to achieve a title in our community. After that, with the strength and knowledge that we have in our south Florida leather community, I will listen and apply their experience to fine tune my platform to presentation level. Without the community, this platform has no meaning. This platform represents all of us on how we grow and strengthen our community more through love.” | Photos Credit: Emit More

Building Something New

Interior design by Aaron Taber

We recently sat down with Chris O’Neill, owner and founder of The West End Lounge, a new cocktail lounge opening on Wilton Drive. Baxter Martin: Hello Chris, thanks for joining us today. Chris O’Neill: My pleasure. It’s great to be talking with you. Baxter Martin: There’s been a lot of buzz around The West End Lounge. But I want to start with the unfortunate news of your business partner’s recent passing, Michael Sporn. How are you doing? Chris O’Neill: It’s been a difficult time for many of us. In such a short time after moving here, Michael became a force in our community, particularly with his generous philanthropic endeavors. For me, he was not only my business partner but a dear friend. I know this project meant a lot to him and I plan to pay tribute to his legacy by naming our cabaret stage after him. Baxter Martin: That sounds like a beautiful way to honor him. How are things coming along with construction? Chris O’Neill: We started with a bang but then ran into delays. Every local business owner I speak to has their own stories of construction challenges. We recently hired a new contractor who’s doing a great job ensuring the integrity of our vision. What inspires me every day is the support from our community. They continue to be excited about this new jewel on the drive. Content by Baxter Martin, photo courtesy of The West End Lounge | Sponsored Editorial

Baxter Martin: Has your vision changed during this extended phase of construction? Chris O’Neill: We did much research to reveal what people were looking for in a new bar in Wilton Manors. So, our vision remains the same. We want The West End Lounge to be where people can immerse themselves in a beautiful atmosphere and enjoy signature cocktails, elevated light bites, and occasional live music. Our initial renderings of the space have received overwhelmingly positive responses, so we know we are on to something special. Baxter Martin: That sounds exciting. How can people stay up to date? Chris O’Neill: To receive updates, they can visit our website at TheWestEndLoungeWM.com or scan the QR code below. Baxter Martin: Thank you, Chris. I’m looking forward to seeing you there soon. Chris O’Neill: I can’t wait to welcome the community to The West End Lounge!

Latinos Salud Commemorates 15 Years with Two Galas, Two Themes Just like a Quinceañara celebrates coming of age with a night of color, dance, and song, at 15 years old, the local HIV/STD non-profit, Latinos Salud, has certainly grown up from its modest start in a small space on Wilton Drive. Today, Latinos Salud offers so much more than its core services of prevention education, condoms, and testing. Under the leadership of its founding directors, Dr. Stephen Fallon and Rafaelé Narváez, in just the past three years, the agency has launched a new Youth Services program, a Health & Culture program, and Pride Scholarships. With each of these programs, Latinos Salud is building the community leaders of tomorrow. The agency has also closed the gap in equitable access to everything from PrEP (the pill, or injection, that prevents HIV) to COVID-19 vaccines, to health insurance. Now with four South Florida locations, serving well over 10,000 LGBTQ community members each year, Latinos Salud has certainly come into its own. Their staff

are bi-lingual, certified, super friendly, and here to help everyone. That’s a lot to celebrate. Latinos Salud will commemorate their 15th anniversary milestone by inviting the community to two Gala events. The Broward Quinceañara event will kick off on Saturday, January 13th with a VIP reception up on the seaside rooftop at the Westin Ft. Lauderdale Beach Resort, starting at 6 PM. Entry to the main event for everyone begins at 7 PM with a full plated dinner, open bar, live music, silent auction, and surprises. The Broward event’s theme colors will be pink and crystal, traditional for a Quinceañara and a 15th anniversary, respectively. Come dressed in crystal, pink, or both! Or you can just choose a splash of pink or crystal to accentuate your outfit: a pocket square, tie, or even your socks. Whether holding VIP or regular tickets, this Gala will kick off 2024 in high style. VIP ticket holders will also receive a “benefit in a box,” personally delivered before the event to their home or

office, with tasty goodies and fun swag. They’ll also get free valet parking, and access to two additional special plated dinner options. The agency’s second Gala opportunity on Saturday, February 10th has its own special theme: “The Reveal.” This will be a more intimate event, held in the agency’s upgraded space in Miami’s SW (the address will be announced soon). The Miami Gala will open with an outdoor party leading to a grand welcome to the agency’s new, large SW location, just renovated with all the style that visitors are used to encountering each time they enter any other Latinos Salud location. Like a big backyard family party leading to an opulent

toast, “The Reveal” will feature passed hors d’oeuvres, live music, and dancing, plus a front-row chance to tour the new space and meet the agency’s growing staff. Everyone who attends will feel the kindness, energy and passion of this dedicated agency. Can’t decide which Gala to attend? Why not come to both? Latinos Salud is offering $50 off ticket prices to its Broward Quinceañara for guests who first book their ticket to the February 10th Miami Gala: “The Reveal.” 15 years of growth, community spirit, and lives changed. This non-profit has certainly grown up!

Left to right: Debbie Allen, Blair Underwood, Janet Jackson, and Michael Weinstein.

Janet Jackson Electrifies Houston Audience on World AIDS Day World-famous, award-winning singer, songwriter, and actress Janet Jackson performed a full-length show before a sold-out crowd packed with ecstatic fans for an AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) World AIDS Day Concert at NRG Arena in Houston, Texas on December 1, 2023. She opened the show with her 1997 hit song “Together Again” – a personal tribute to a friend lost to AIDS as well as others affected by HIV. “It was amazing to see AHF’s mission and message – ‘It’s not over’ – represented throughout the U.S. and around the world through dozens of events, discussions, interviews, and community engagement opportunities,” said AHF Board Chair Dr. William Arroyo. “World AIDS Day in Houston was a transcendent night of love, compassion and commitment," added AHF President Michael Weinstein. "Janet Jackson, Blair Underwood, and Debbie Allen took center stage Friday night in Houston, but it is the advocates across the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe whose voices carried this World AIDS Day with the important reminder that HIV and AIDS still affect millions of people globally, and the fight continues.”

Emmy, Grammy, and Golden Globe-winning choreographer, director, and producer Debbie Allen received a standing ovation as she took the stage to present an In Memoriam tribute, honoring those we’ve lost to AIDS-related illnesses over the past 40 years, including her beloved “boys from Fame.” The audience also was on its feet and cheering as AHF presented its Lifetime Achievement Award to Emmy Award-winning actor and activist Blair Underwood, a powerful voice in the fight against HIV/AIDS for more than three decades. Rapper Willie D of the Geto Boys, recording artist and producer BeatKing, rapper Yungstar of the Screwed Up Click, renowned restaurateur Steve Rogers, U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, and prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump were among the evening’s celebrity and VIP attendees. World AIDS Day is an annual commemorative event to honor those we’ve lost to HIV/AIDS, to show support for those currently living with or affected by HIV/AIDS, and to emphasize the fight against HIV/AIDS is not over. Ticket sales from the concert benefit AHF’s HIV/AIDS awareness.

• Traditional medical diagnosis and treatments primarily address symptoms, such as prescribing medication for pain. • Genesis Health Institute adopts a different approach, investigating the root cause of symptoms and underlying conditions. • We treat illnesses as part of the body’s overall health, employing functional medicine, the next-generation healthcare model. • Functional medicine shifts from a disease-centered approach to a whole-body perspective, examining how genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors interact.

The Beachcomber Changing Lives

Crystal meth, alcohol, and other party drugs consumed Peter (not his real name) for ten years. “I knew I was going to die. I visited The Beachcomber to learn about the recovery program for LGBTQA+ addicts. I got a good feeling, a good vibe, and it felt like home,” states Peter. Having tried other addiction centers, Peter felt like a number in a factory and success was not established. The Beachcomber is successful because of personalized treatment plans. “I truly believe they actually care. If I had not received the one-to-one care, I would have lost my life,” Peter says. It has been three years Since Peter began treatment through The Beachcomber Family Center for Addiction Recovery. Peter began his sobriety journey with the 28day Partial Hospitalization Program followed by Intensive Outpatient Treatment, Relapse Prevention Treatment, and Outpatient Meetings. The Beachcomber boasts a 60% client success rate if clients complete all programs of treatment and recovery. Because of the Beachcomber and newfound sobriety, Peter was able to return to school and earned a degree as a mental health counselor now working at an addiction treatment center. Immediate plans are to complete a Counseling and Supervision PhD. Peter added, “I have nothing but fondness for The Beachcomber. Now I want to give back to others.” The Beachcomber prides itself on the success of its alumni. Eric (not his real name) has also come full circle from Beachcomber patient to employee. Trying to fit into the LGBTQA+ scene, Eric used crystal meth and GHB at circuit parties and events where it is normalized. He considers drug use in the community an “epidemic.” At the summit of addiction, Eric was offered a choice of a 6-month jail term or participation in a treatment program. The Beachcomber was chosen because of the innovative Author: Brickey Lane

LGBTQA+ treatment group. “The program allowed me to realize there is a community of LGBTQA+ people that are sober, loving, caring, responsible, and healthy.” Eric sums up his recovery because of The Beachcomber, “my life has never been better.” The Beachcomber Family Center for Addiction and Recovery is the oldest continuously operated private substance abuse program in the state of Florida. Since 1976, The Beachcomber mission has not changed; to help those who suffer with the pain of alcohol and drug addiction. The family owned business vows not to become a corporate entity, but rather to remain a business who does not lose its sense of purpose. Multiple locations in Broward and Palm Beach Counties provide residential and outpatient programs, group, family, and individualized sessions, relapse prevention, and behavioral addiction programs. For nine years, the Commercial Boulevard location has provided tailored treatment for the LGBTQA+ Community from the leadership of Michael Giorgi. This community is 10% more likely to suffer from addiction stemming from internal homophobia, sex abuse, trauma, and feeling disconnected to society. The sessions help clients integrate into a healthy LGBTQA+ lifestyle with the goal of leaving coping mechanisms behind. Alumni often continue meetings and assist with community service such as the Poverello Food Drive and Pridefest. The Beachcomber Family Center for Addiction and Recovery is licensed by Florida DCF and accredited by Joint Commission National Quality Approval. The Beachcomber accepts most insurances and self-pay. If you or someone you know suffers from addiction and to learn more about recovery programs, please visit www.BeachcomberOutPatient.com or call 954-615-4003.

A Farewell Message from Stacy Hyde, CEO of Broward House When I walked through the doors of Broward House for the first time 21 years ago, I knew I believed in the mission, that I wanted to make a difference for those living with HIV, and that I wanted to make an impact. I had no idea how Broward House would impact me. I have learned over the years that regardless of what we face we all need the same foundation… to know we are cared for, to understand change is possible and to fully believe we deserve healthy, amazing lives. It is up to each of us to support others in discovering and creating this foundation. We each have the power to lift those around us. We have the power to create the community we desire. As I say farewell to my role at Broward House, I am reminded of the whys that contributed to how I have chosen to spend my work life and how it has become a part of my whole life, of me. Every interaction, whether uplifting or challenging, has strengthened my heart and fierce belief that we all deserve dignity. It is the grace,

resilience, vulnerability and eventual hope of those clients, staff, and supporters who gave me the trust and honor of being a small part of their stories. Each one leaving a mark and forever changing my view of what matters. As I move from Broward House, from Florida and my home, I have faith the journey will offer opportunities to find more sacred ground and instill dignity, while the values of Broward House continue to live within me. The work continues with your support by donating. I have deep appreciation for each of you who left a mark and those who will carry the heart of Broward House into the future. There is so much more work to do to make certain 100% of people living with HIV are in care, we prevent all new transmissions of HIV, and we eliminate stigma. I hold faith that this day will come. With care, gratitude, and love, Stacy Hyde

The Last Ride They rode. They rode their tuned-up bikes. They rode fun tandem bikes. One rode a unicycle. But no matter the vehicle, they rode.

shows. Bingo nights. Bingo nights hosted by drag queens. A bond was created over the years, a bond that began out of common cause: defeating HIV/AIDS.

They cried. They cried at opening ceremonies in Miami and closing ceremonies in Key West. They cried at pit stops when the enormity of the moment overwhelmed them.

Local entertainment icon, FayWhat?!, was a first timer. She was on the emotional support, or cheerleading, team. “I’m getting chills just saying this. It’s monumental what happened over the weekend. Even though I didn’t ride, I felt like I did ride.”

They hugged. They hugged in fresh, dry jerseys and during sweaty breaks. They hugged every chance they got. The 20th and final edition of the SMART Ride brought people together from across Florida and the country. The largest ride of its kind to give back 100% of money raised by riders, crew, and volunteers to the community. “The SMART Ride is an energy like no other,” Ginny Garrison of Team CAN told OutClique. “You pull from all depths of your inner being and you just go for an entire weekend. It's the friendships you make throughout each ride every year.” The ride has raised about $16.4M over the years, including $1.3M this year. A Long Journey SMART Ride was a two-day, 165 mile bike ride from Miami to Key West that happened the weekend before Thanksgiving. But it was hardly a one weekend event. Indeed, SMART Ride was a year-round process. Riders train for months, getting up early before work or gathering early on a weekend morning. Teams held fundraisers all year. There were raffles. Drag Author: John Hayden

SunServe CEO Tony Lima had his crew all over the place from riders to volunteers to cheerleading. “We led the Ride’s Emotional Support team comprised of staff therapists, social workers, organization directors, journalist FayWhat and myself." After two days of seemingly endless pedaling, they began riding into Key West for the last time. As they gathered for closing ceremonies, dripping sweat and flowing tears were indistinguishable. Everyone knew they were part of a movement that would never have happened without founder Glen Weinzimer. A now thirty-year HIV-survivor, he founded the ride to show it is possible to raise large sums without a lot of overhead and return money to the community. “Glen created a community that will continue long after the ride. It has been an honor to be a part of all these years. Thank you, Glen,” Garrison gushed. SunServe’s James Kirkland sums up the sentiment. “Even though it marked the final ride, the overwhelming positive energy and love that surrounded the event will stay with me for a lifetime."

LGBTQIA+ Organizations Raised $688,812 at this year’s Give Miami Day Miami, known for its vibrant culture, stunning beaches, and lively nightlife, is also a hub for diverse LGBTQIA+ organizations that play a crucial role in fostering inclusivity and support within the community. In fact, many LGBTQIA+ organizations were front and center at this year’s Give Miami Day, hosted by The Miami Foundation, November 16, 2023. More than 1000 organizations across MiamiDade County came together for what has become Miami’s most important day of giving. The 12th annual event was the boldest to date, raising a total of $34.1 million from 96,000 donations! This year, there was a record 62 organizations that focus primarily on serving the LGBTQIA+ community, and all told, they raised $688,812. Here’s how a few organizations you know did: - Yes Institute: raised a total of $35,624. - The Alliance for LGBTQ Youth: raised a total of $13,398. - Safe Schools South Florida: won the Show Us Your TikTok #DonationDance award of $1,500 and raised a total of $12,621. - Out My Closet: raised a total of $4,750. - TransSOCIAL: raised a total of $2,014.

“Give Miami Day 2023 was an exceptional day with 46,619 people stepping up to say they care about Miami so much that they were willing to share a part of their own treasure for the greater good,” said Miami Foundation board chair, Sheldon Anderson, CEO of Grove Bank and Trust. “Each and every donor has just empowered community nonprofits, plus their employees, to move boldly into the next year fueled to face whatever the year ahead brings. The success of Give Miami Day is a testament to Rebecca Fishman Lipsey’s bold leadership and The Miami Foundation’s staff who are steadfast in their commitment and enthusiasm for its mission.” While Give Miami Day 2023 is over, you can always donate to these LGBTQIA+ organizations and others like them, throughout the year. Organization contact information is kept at Givemiamiday.org. And remember, your support goes beyond financial contributions; it becomes a statement of solidarity in creating a more equitable and accepting community. So mark your calendar for Give Miami Day 2024 – the Thursday before Thanksgiving – where you can step up to support LGBTQAI+ organizations about which you are passionate!

Putting an End to Surprise Medical Bills According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, effective January 1, 2022, the No Surprises Act (NSA) protects you from surprise billing if you have a group health plan or group or individual health insurance coverage, and bans: ● Surprise bills for emergency services from an outof-network provider or facility and without prior authorization ● Out-of-network cost-sharing, like out-of-network coinsurance or copayments, for all emergency and some non-emergency services ● Out-of-network charges and balance bills for supplemental care, like radiology or anesthesiology, by out-of-network providers that work at an in-network facility The No Surprises Act also requires some health care facilities and providers to disclose Federal and State patient protections against balance billing and sets forth complaint processes with respect to violations of the protections against balance billing and out-of-network cost sharing. To avoid surprise bills, whenever possible, work with your insurance provider to stay within your plan for doctors and other facilities for planned procedures. Do not sign documents that might waive your rights. The facility may decide not to provide services to you, but you may explore other options to avoid being responsible for bills beyond your routine insurance coverage. The No Surprise Act also provides protection for emergency surgery bills.

If you are still billed for doctors or services from out of network providers, despite using an in-plan doctor, hospital, facility, etc., you should discuss the bill with your insurance provider. Your provider may be able to resolve the issue so that you are only billed for your customer copay or deductible consistent with your in-plan fees. If you are unable to resolve a bill working with your insurance provider, you may seek assistance from the Insurance Consumer Helpline in Florida (877-693-5236). You may also file a complaint at: myfloridacfo.com/ division/consumers/needourhelp The federal government also operates the No Surprises Help Desk from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET, 7 days a week at 800985-3059. They also accept online complaints at: idm. cms.gov. You will need to create an ID and login to start the complaint process. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau site provides other information and resources to assist you if you believe you are being unfairly billed. consumerfinance.gov/askcfpb/what-is-a-surprise-medical-bill-and-what-should-iknow-about-the-no-surprises-act-en-2123/provides There are also advocates to assist consumers needing assistance with bills and coverage issues. You may consult with www.bbb.org/us/fl/boca-raton/profile/healthadvocate/human-health-advocates-llc-0633-90312971 or another service provider so that you are billed fairly and consistent with applicable law.

From that conversation, Michael drove a 3-year exploration of research, including a oneyear trial 6-bed facility, that resulted in the development of the Sunshine Pride House, a 12-bed house in Fort Lauderdale slated to open in January 2024 and is owned by the Sunshine Cathedral Foundation with programs and services provided by local non-profits, FLITE Center

Empowering Tomorrow: Museum of Discovery and Science’s Hub for Resilience Education Paves the Way for Climate Action in South Florida In the face of rising environmental challenges, South Florida has become a hotbed for sustainability and resilience initiatives. From comprehensive regional plans like the third Southeast Florida Regional Climate Action Plan (RCAP 3.0) to localized efforts such as the Broward Climate Action Plan and Miami’s Back Bay Study, the region has witnessed meticulous planning aimed at fortifying communities against the impacts of climate change. Recent findings from the Florida Climate Resilience Survey, conducted by Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Environmental Studies, indicates a positive shift in public sentiment. Floridians are not only invested in the topic of climate change but also favor increased government intervention to address its effects. These findings reflect the culmination of hard work and dedication by policymakers, environmentalists, and communities striving to create a more resilient and sustainable South Florida. However, critical questions arise: How well-informed is the average South Florida resident about these ongoing initiatives? Do they fully grasp the extent of work happening within local governments, non-

profit organizations, and universities? Do they possess the knowledge and tools to actively contribute to climate action? Addressing this need for awareness and education is the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS), a pivotal player in the South Florida community. Recognizing the importance of closing the gap between climate policy and public understanding, MODS was designated as the Hub for Resilience Education by the Community Foundation of Broward. This initiative seeks to unite the diverse stakeholder groups engaged in critical climate change work across the region. MODS envisions the Hub as a collaborative platform where voices from various sectors can come together to share successes, avoid duplication of efforts and promote a unified approach to resilience and sustainability. More than just a convener, the Hub aims to empower individuals and communities through comprehensive education and training programs focused on sustainability and resilience. By providing the public with the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions, MODS hopes to catalyze grassroots action and community involvement.

Through the Hub, MODS is committed to presenting cutting-edge scientific concepts linked to coastal resilience and climate change. By fostering a creative environment that inspires innovative thought, MODS aims to spotlight innovations and contribute to the burgeoning resilience sector in South Florida. The Hub's focus extends beyond traditional education, embracing workforce development, promoting entrepreneurship, and stimulating economic vitality in areas directly addressing climate challenges. At the center of the Hub lies a transformative permanent exhibit at the Museum, currently in the design phase and set to open in 2025. This exhibit will connect guests with climate action, providing an immersive experience that educates and engages. By making climate change tangible and relatable, MODS seeks to inspire a sense of responsibility and action among its 500,000 annual visitors. MODS’ Hub for Resilience Education stands on the foundation of the Museum’s longstanding commitment

to institutional sustainability and adherence to green building practice. Leveraging the trust that society places in museums, particularly science centers, MODS positions itself as a highly credible source of information. This trust is supported by research from the American Alliance of Museums and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, highlighting the public’s confidence in science news originating from museums. MODS is not embarking on a journey towards a more sustainable, resilient, and just future for the museum alone. Instead, it is extending an invitation to the entire South Florida community, especially to practitioners actively engaged in addressing climate change. If you are one such practitioner and wish to learn more about the Hub for Resilience Education, please reach out to lance.cutrer@mods.org. MODS is committed to ensuring that as many individuals as possible join them on this transformative journey, fostering a community that is not only informed but empowered to actively shape a sustainable future for South Florida.

The Spirit of Our Community Growing up, I was never much of a morning person. I was a bigger fan of the nighttime, because it offered much more excitement and opportunities to be social and have fun. But as I’ve grown older, I’ve started to appreciate the mornings a lot more. I’ve stopped dreading the sunlight shining through my window and forcing me to rise from my sleep. Instead, I’m a lot more appreciative of what the morning brings me: a new opportunity to rise, be grateful, and serve my community. As a pastor, Sunday mornings are the highlight of my week, with worship, fellowship time, and more often than not, some sort of gathering or meeting after church is done. But I’m finding that mornings throughout the week are just as busy. I get to have breakfast with members, give a call or a visit to someone in need, and hopefully get a little bit of study-time in for my sermons. I moved from Miami to Broward County back in September to become the lead pastor at the United Church of Christ Fort Lauderdale. In these past few months, my position at the church has offered me so many opportunities to not only connect with the members of my congregation but also to be out in the community, building relationships with the people of this county as well as serving those who are in need. Our church has a community outreach program called Ruth’s Ministry that serves over 150 people each week with a hot meal, clothing, showers, and more. We hosted an interfaith Thanksgiving service in November, as a way of building peace among people of all faiths. And we’ve welcomed a number of LGBTQ+ organizations into our space for collaboration around trans equality, LGBTQ+ health, and music. I am so inspired to rise each morning and work alongside the people of UCC Fort Lauderdale as well as the many

community organizations that call Broward County home. I treat every day, every moment, as an opportunity to spread God’s love and create a more just world for my neighbors. There is something special happening right now in Broward County. Maybe it’s always been here, and I am just noticing it because I’m new! But I definitely feel a sense of community, service, solidarity, love, and hope are rising up and I am so glad to be a part of it. One of my favorite Bible verses is Lamentations 3:22-23. It reads, “The steadfast love of our God never ceases. God’s mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.” I truly believe this and have started reciting this to myself each morning as I rise and start a new day of work in this community. I look forward to sharing love and joy with this wonderful community for many years to come!

Symphony of the Americas Presents Trailblazers! The Women of Symphonic Music Conducted by Music Director Pablo Mielgo and Featuring Guest Artist, Soprano Jeanette Vecchione-Donatti

Symphony of the Americas celebrates The Women of Symphonic Music with The Symphony Classics program, “Trailblazers!” on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at Broward Center for Performing Arts Amaturo Theater. Conducted by Symphony of the Americas Music Director Pablo Mielgo, the program highlights the role of women in their different historical expressions over a 200-year timespan. Joining The Symphony is guest artist, internationally acclaimed soprano Jeanette Vecchione-Donatti, a thrill to audiences both in the opera house and on the concert stage. In a repertoire that spans from Handel to Bernstein, she has graced the stages of the Vienna State Opera, Paris Opera, Theatre des Champs Elysees, and many more. Ms. Donatti attended The Juilliard School and graduated with both a Bachelors and Masters in Music. The “bookend” approach to “Trailblazers!” compares and

contrasts styles and sounds, intertwining the influence of composers and their themes. Grammy and Pulitzer Prize recipient, Jennifer Higdon, an icon of current contemporary American composition, brings us Blue Cathedral – an ode to her brother. Next, several arias by the great Austrian genius Mozart, whose thematic approach highlights the characters of women, taking on the lead roles within the opera. I call this cycle “Mozart’s Heroines,” expounding the virtues and strength of women within the classical period. The program is completed with the first symphony by the great American composer of the 20th century, Florence Price. A woman who was a mark of musical influence in her time, but broke great barriers in the cultural and social environment of the United States, Price is considered to be the first Black American classical composer. Her Symphony n. 1 is inspired by both the Western classical tradition and Black musical idioms.

JAN 26,

”LORD HONEY! Butter My Butt and Call Me a Biscuit” Chef Jason Smith serves up what to expect at the Visit Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival Calling ‘Everyone Under the Sun’! It’s time for foodie fanatics, mixology masters, and good ol’ fashioned goodtime seekers to unite for the 2024 Visit Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival. Celebrating its fifth anniversary, this seven-day series of curated culinary experiences and Signature Events celebrates all who contribute to the ever-evolving epicurean scene in South Florida and beyond. The festival will take place January 8-14, 2024, welcoming a new headline chef MasterChef judge Chef Aarón Sánchez, and welcoming back the ever-exciting talents of Chef Jason Smith, Chef Nancy Fuller and Chef Nicole Layog. What’s a foodie festival without a little bit of friendly competition? The VLFWF wouldn’t quite know as they’re serving up some serious stage time to the oh-so-fabulous Chef Jason Smith during The Grand Tasting. “Lord honey children, when we say that you will see a show like no other, this will be the one of the many highlights of the VLFWF,” dishes Chef Smith. “Event goers will be able to see myself and my great friend Nancy get down to some awesome cooking, laughter, and storytelling.” A recipe for entertainment, Chefs Smith and Fuller show up for the showdown of a North vs. South cook-off creating the same recipe with a personal twist on the main stage during The Grand Tasting on January 13th at Las Olas Oceanside Park. And while the featured recipe is still under wraps as these culinary masterminds plan an unforgettable stage performance, Chef Smith

promises a good time, “When me and Nancy get in the kitchen it becomes not only a teaching moment for all that watches, but also a down home knee slapping good time. We love to have fun in the kitchen all the while making memories for years to come, and teaching folks a few tricks of the trade. It will leave you wanting more and having laughed so hard your sides will hurt. Imma gonna tell y’all I’m pretty sure I will pull out the win on this little cooking battle. I’m not one to brag but, when it comes to southern cooking it's always heartwarming and memorable to say the least.” In short, “Lord honey, it’ll be more excitin’ than two frogs fightin’ over a piece of pie,” says Chef Smith and if that isn’t enough of a must-see, must-taste reason to make your way down to the Grand Tasting then perhaps a little one-on-one time with Chef Smith would be. New to this year’s week-long lineup of culinary classes is Southern Cooking with a Country Bling Twist! “Last year was my first year at the VLFWF and boy was it a great, wonderful time. So, I said to myself, ‘Self, I want to do even more at next year's event,’” shares Chef Smith. “I wanted to do more events, to be able to touch an even bigger audience than before. Being involved in the Southern Cooking experience at Sistrunk Marketplace was just the sort of thing I was thinking. I get to be up close and personal with each attendee at that event and really give them a taste of my southern roots.” On January 11th guests can belly up to Chef Smith’s southern table where they’ll indulge with a downhome southern welcome libation of Bourbon Lime Tea and Sweet Tater Fritters with Hot Maple Butter. Then, you’ll learn to make Hoecakes with Blue Crab and Avocado and

Chef Jason’s Country Fried Steak Fingers with Garlic Dill Mayo. Cooking alongside Chef Jorge Montes of Sistrunk Marketplace, Chef Smith reassures those with weary kitchen skills or a knack better suited for eating rather than cooking to, “don’t fret children! We will show you the ease of preparing and cooking these fab dishes that will make ya’ want to be in the kitchen whipping them up for your family on a daily basis. The recipes are featured in my new cookbook.” And guests will receive a copy of the Lord Honey – Traditional Southern Recipes with a Country Bling Twist to take home. And for those that may miss this more intimate cooking affair with Chef Smith, they’ll still have a chance to snag their own copy and have it signed by Chef during the Grand Tasting. “It is a cookbook like no other on the market. Not only is it a recipe book, but it’s a road map of my life up to this point, from growing up on the Kentucky farm to being on television and beyond,” says Chef Smith. “All the recipes are easy to follow and easy to make, with few ingredients you can cook like a southerner too. The book features great breakfast dishes, sides, mains, desserts and quick pickles & jams you won't be able to put down, along with great stories and A LOT of Jasonisims throughout the book.” As we take a moment to add ‘Jasonisms’ to our permanent vocabulary, we leave you with the entire week’s schedule of culinary amazingness. For the full schedule of events, visit visitlauderdale.com. But don’t take our word for it. Chef Smith advises to “mark your calendars, make your plans now, get ya tickets, and come out and enjoy the sights, sounds and wonderful events. From cooking classes, BBQ Brawl, Bar Fight, Grand Tasting, and many, many more events you won't

be disappointed. It’s one of the best Food & Wine events I’ve ever been to. We have more fun than you can shake a stick at.” Fun and excitement aside, cooking for a cause is an understatement when considering the Visit Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival dedicates its entire week-long program in support of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH). "Going into five years of rounding up the most impressive chefs, mixologists, and restaurants that all benefit a tremendous cause, you can say we have a taste for philanthropic foodie fun, and aren’t done yet,” says Visit Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival co-founder Kate Reed. “We’re inspired and motivated more than ever by all the talent, purveyors, and foodie-fun seekers that unite each year to support our official charity partner, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. This is where the culinary community feeds our entire community by cooking up awareness, support, and funds for organizations that are equally as driven, like Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.” Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital will receive a portion of all proceeds from the seven-day culinary experience. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is one of the region’s leading pediatric hospitals, offering a comprehensive scope of healthcare services and programs in a childfriendly atmosphere. It is a full-service, pediatric hospital that treats minor illnesses, trauma-related accidents, and some of the most complex medical conditions. And if you needed just a bit more motivation to make your way to the festival, well, we couldn’t have said it any better than Chef Smith declaring “Lord Honey. It’s more excitin’ than two skunks kissin’ in a corn patch!”

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo Celebrating its 50th anniversary season in 2024, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo was founded in 1974 by a group of ballet enthusiasts for the purpose of presenting a playful, entertaining view of traditional, classical ballet in parity form and en travesti. The Trocks, as they are affectionately known, first performed at the loft of the West Side Discussion Group, and quickly garnered a major critical essay in the New Yorker, which established the company as an artistic and popular success. By mid 1975, the Trocks’ inspired blend of a loving knowledge of dance with a comic approach, alongside the astounding fact that men can, indeed, dance en pointe without falling flat on their faces, was being noted beyond New York. Since those beginnings, the Trocks have established themselves as a major dance phenomenon throughout the world – their frenzied annual schedule has included

appearances in over 35 countries and over 600 cities worldwide since its founding. As its 50th birthday approaches, the company remains cutting edge by boldly defining conventional, gender classification and breaking down preconceptions of ballet through their unique blend of satire in spectacle. The original concept of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo has not changed over the decades. It is a company of professional male dancers performing the full range of the classical ballet and modern dance repertoire. The comedy is achieved by incorporating and exaggerating the foibles, accidents, and underlying incongruities of serious dance. For the future, there are plans for new works, new cities, states and countries to perform in. And for the continuation of the Trocks original purpose: to bring the pleasure of dance to the widest possible audience. They will, as they have done for 50 years, ‘Keep on Trockin’.

Bouvèé Babble Pull a Fast one!

Many folks who frequent my shows know that I have been doing intermittent fasting. Though my fasting has slowed as a result of the holidays, I wanted to take a moment and share with you what has worked for me and a little bit of information about what fasting is. I first got exposed to fasting in the new year last year (2023) but didn’t find the mental bandwidth to give it a try until May of 2023. The results were slow but steady. As I write this article, I am down 45 pounds. In my case, I chose to do the 16/8, which is to say 16 hours of fasting (not eating) and 8 hours of responsible eating (grilled chicken, little to no fried foods, etc.). It’s very important to note that you have to make healthier food decisions in the 8 hours you are permitted to eat. The largest mistake you can make is binge eating in that period. Furthermore, in the off period (the 16 hours of no eating), you really can only consume coffee, tea, and water. Sure, I snuck a Celsius or an occasional diet coke here and there, but it’s really important to stick to it if you can. It also means, as you have seen in my shows, no drinking after a certain time. My 8 hours of eating, that is to say, the period in which I can consume alcohol as well as food, is between 1:00 pm and 9:00 pm. So, if I

am on stage from 8:00-11:00 pm, at 9:00pm I must stop drinking, so I usually switch to iced tea. A few things to note. The 8 hours of permitted eating and drinking can be placed anywhere that works for you. Because I work later evening hours, I make mine later and always ensure I eat dinner before my shows, which was a major change for me. If you are a morning person, perhaps someone who wakes at 5:00am every day, you may want to do something like 10:00am-6:00pm. Also, the research is showing that this weight loss regiment doesn’t really work well for women over 50, is not really a good choice for diabetics with type 1 (but can help regulate A1C for type 2), and like most diets, seems to work best when paired with an increase in exercise and movement. For me, this has worked! I have been as heavy as 410 pounds and struggled with weight my whole life. This particular regimen seems to be the best fit for me so far. As always, choose your own adventure and seek medical professional advice before embarking on anything drastic like intermittent fasting. Happy New Year everyone!

Matthew Buffalo Talks Island City Stage’s Which Way to the Stage South Florida actor Matthew Buffalo, who has performed in several Island City Stage productions including Buyer & Cellar, Tracy Jones, and Pageant, will be returning to the popular queer theater venue for its upcoming performances of Which Way to the Stage, playing January 18 - February 11, 2024.

Written by Ana Nogueira, this playful and profound comedy follows Broadway superfans Jeff and Judy, who eagerly await their idol, Idina Menzel, after her performance in If/ Then at the stage door every night. However, when a sexy stranger enters the scene and upends their friendship, the musical theater aficionados may have to go off book to rewrite their own finale.

Denny Patterson: Is there a certain scene you are most excited to do? Matthew Buffalo: These scenes are so fast paced and lively, and I cannot wait to live them nightly. However, the scene I am most excited to explore is the scene when Jeff gets to do his drag act at his local gay bar! It’s going to be a personal dream to perform these songs.

Buffalo will be starring as Jeff, and he took some time to talk more about the show and his role with OutClique.

Denny Patterson: Have you always had a passion for acting and performing? Matthew Buffalo: I have. My earliest memory of performing was weirdly after my grandmother’s surgery. While she was recovering in bed, I’d use her bedroom closet curtains as my stage. I was her own personal theater troupe, dancing, singing, and doing improv scenes in order to make her laugh and feel a bit better. I’ve never stopped performing.

Denny Patterson: Hi, Matt! Let me begin by asking, how excited are you to be in Island City Stage's production of Which Way to the Stage? Matthew Buffalo: I am super excited! I always love working with Island City Stage, and this play is so much fun. Denny Patterson: You play Jeff, one of the leads. How are you wanting to approach this character? Matthew Buffalo: Every time I read through this play, I fall more in love with the character of Jeff. He has his flaws, as we all do, but his sense of humor, as well as his personal and career struggles, I definitely connect with. The more I explore the character of Jeff, I discover that we are very similar in many respects. The challenge for me as an actor is going to be finding the differences between myself and Jeff while still empathizing with what motivates him. Denny Patterson: Are you as big of an Idina Menzel fan as Jeff and Judy are? Matthew Buffalo: I have seen her in almost every show she has been in on Broadway, except Aida. So, I guess I kind of am an Idina fan (laughs). Denny Patterson: What do you ultimately hope audiences take away from this production? Matthew Buffalo: That’s a tough question because there are so many wonderful aspects of this play. If I were to narrow it down, I’d say that I want the audience to not only walk away laughing and having had a fun evening, but I also hope it sparks conversation about the myriad of current topics that the play raises about our community and world. Denny Patterson: And with this show, what are you hoping to personally gain? Matthew Buffalo: Great question! I’ve never been asked that before. As with any production I am a part of, I’m hoping to simply learn a bit more about myself as an actor and as a person. That may sound generic, but it’s the truth.

Denny Patterson: You have been in a couple previous Island City Stage productions including Buyer & Cellar, Tracy Jones, and Pageant. What makes this company so special to you? Matthew Buffalo: Island City Stage has been so welcoming to me, not only as an actor, but also as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. When I moved to the area several years ago, it was the first theater in the Fort Lauderdale area where I attended a performance. The entire team that works in every capacity are some of the best people to work with. I am always eager to do a show there. Island City Stage is also special to me because of its mission of bringing diverse stories from the LGBTQ+ community to life on stage. Denny Patterson: What are some future goals you hope to accomplish as an actor? Matthew Buffalo: I love getting to know the characters I play and understand them a bit better, which helps me understand myself and the human condition a bit more. I just want to continue sharing stories. Denny Patterson: Before we wrap up, are there any other upcoming projects or anything else you'd like to mention or plug? Matthew Buffalo: I am an assistant professor of theater at New World School of the Arts in Miami, so directing and teaching at the college will be my upcoming projects. I love being on stage, but having the honor to share what I’ve learned in my career and previous training with my students along with what I’m discovering in real time while in a production is a dream come true!

An Evening of Music with Tom Goss at Sunshine Cathedral

South Florida can never get enough of Tom Goss, and lucky for us, the singer-songwriter is coming back to Fort Lauderdale January 19, 2024, for a one-night only concert at Sunshine Cathedral. Challenging the world we live in by going outside the norm and honing in on topics that are sometimes considered taboo, many of Goss’ tracks speak to LGBTQ+ issues and his unapologetic love for the bear community. His career can be defined as unique, but that’s what makes audiences continue to fall in love with him. OutClique had the opportunity to catch up with Goss and talk more about his upcoming appearance, new projects, and more. Denny Patterson: Tom, can you begin by telling us what we can expect from your upcoming performance at Sunshine Cathedral? Tom Goss: It’s going to be lots of fun! I released a new record this year called Remember What It Feels Like, and the show is honed around that. We’ve also kind of taken the best bits from previous shows and added them to a lot of new fun bits. So, honestly, it’s just a barrel of laughs. There’s audience participation, everybody’s going to have a good time, and they’re going to leave smiling and feeling good. Denny Patterson: What are you looking forward to the most about going back this time? Tom Goss: I have been playing at Sunshine Cathedral since about 2011, and they would always invite me to church, but I never had a chance to go. I finally went for the first time last year, and it gave me a greater understanding of what they do and what their mission is. I always felt such a wonderful, warm, communityminded, and uplifting mentality of the people at Sunshine Cathedral, but seeing them reinvent church in a very queer, intentional space just made me love what they're doing even more.

So, I'm really looking forward to going there and seeing people who I have been calling my friends for a dozen years and being a part of their mission to uplift the queer community. Denny Patterson: And since you have performed in South Florida several times, what makes this overall community so special to you? Tom Goss: I love Florida, man. To me, Fort Lauderdale is so warm, welcoming, and full of life. I think there's a libertarian streak to Florida, as a general rule, and I also think a lot of people who make up Fort Lauderdale are queer people who have felt marginalized in other places. When they get there, it really is their safe space, and they're allowed to truly be themselves. Fort Lauderdale is just a wonderful city. Denny Patterson: You mentioned earlier your latest album, Remember What It Feels Like. How has it been received? Tom Goss: So great. People have really been loving it. I released Territories in 2019, which was a very heavy record, but in that interim period since, I got my own studio here in LA and I've been constantly making songs but not releasing them. Releasing music is horrible, but making music is fun. Finally, I had at least 25 tracks, and I was like, Tom, you’ve got to release something to these people. So, I put together a bundle of joyful and exuberant tracks, and it's a really fun ride. People are enjoying it. Denny Patterson: What are some other goals you hope to accomplish in 2024? Tom Goss: I want to make this record, but I also want to make a much larger concept narrative piece. Something like Glen Hansard’s musical, Once. I would love to do something like that and continue to tell queer stories. Maybe we could perform this in a theatrical setting or create a short film out of it. I think that would be very fun and challenging for me.

GALA After two successful summer residencies in Provincetown, Schartt$ Creek: Honeymoon in Wilton Manors, the totally unauthorized parody of the record-setting Emmy Awardwinning comedy series, opens January 18, 2024, at Empire Stage in Fort Lauderdale. Named “Favorite New Show” by Ptownie, Schartt$ Creek picks up where the series left off as we join the Rose family in Wilton Manors as they attempt to support David who finds himself alone on his honeymoon. The whole clan is there - Moira, Johnny, Stevie and Alexis - with the main purpose to cheer up David, but somehow seem to make the trip all about themselves. Schartt$ also enjoyed a sold-out run last winter at Act2 Stages in Puerto Vallarta. This past summer, Schartt$ celebrated its 100th show at the Post Office Cabaret in Ptown where it world premiered in 2022. Schartt$ reunites Morris as “Moira” with Eric Maul and Jonathan Peters from the Ptown production. Maul plays “Alexis” and “Stevie” and Peters plays the father and son duo of “David” and “Johnny.” They are joined by local talent Benjamin Schaevitz, aka “Suzie Toot”, as “everyone else.” Schartt$ Creek: Honeymoon in Wilton Manors opens January 18 and runs through March 3, 2024, at Empire Stage (1140 N. Flagler Dr. In Ft. Lauderdale). Performance schedule: Thursday through Saturday at 8PM, Sundays at 5PM. It is recommended to book this show early.

The Royals are Back in Town! What has more fabulous gowns than an Oscar’s red carpet, raises substantial money for LGBTQ charities and is ruled by an Empress and an Emperor? Why, it’s the Imperial Sun Court of all Florida, the Florida chapter of the Imperial Court System, the LGBTQ philanthropic organization that was founded in 1965 by World War II veteran Jose Julio Sarria. The Imperial Court system has successfully combined high drag events with charity ever since. It is the oldest LGBTQ organization in the world and proudly boasts 70 chapters located across Canada, Mexico and the United States. The Florida chapter will be holding the coronation of the new Emperor and Empress of Reign VI on January 20, 2024, at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott North and preparations are underway. Warning: you may experience a shortage of sequins in the state of Florida. I spoke to the outgoing Emperor, Emperor E, (real name Eric Lipson) to find out more about this exciting event. Charles Baran: Hello Eric! What can you tell us about the Imperial Sun Court of all Florida. Eric Lipson: Since 2018, our chapter, a registered 501c3, has raised over $250,000 for LGBTQ organizations in Florida. Beneficiaries were Compass Youth, TransSOCIAL, Pet Project, Julian’s Fountain of Youth, and UCC Ruth Ministry. And every month, members of the Sun Court pack lunches for food insecure people. It’s been a rewarding year. I’ve enjoyed serving with my Empress Leila Cox, Empress LTS (Latina Tropical Storm). While we have a great time at the galas and balls, it’s the charity work that matters most. Charles Baran: Has the court chosen a new Empress and Emperor for Reign VI? Eric Lipson: Not yet. They will be announced at the coronation on January 20th. We are all very excited. It will be a spectacular evening!

After your initial application for Homestead Exemption has been approved, it automatically renews each year unless there is a change of ownership or eligible use of your homesteaded property. Each January, our office mails a Homestead Renewal Notice and “Change Card” to all Homesteaded properties. Florida law requires the property owner to notify the Property Appraiser of any change which may affect homestead eligibility. This Change Order Card provides an efficient way to communicate these important changes to our office. If there are NO changes to the use and/or ownership of your property, simply keep the card as your receipt verifying that your Homestead Exemption has automatically renewed for another year. However, if there are changes, please mark the Change Card accordingly and return it to our office. If your name is not printed above the mailing address section on this card, it means you are not protected by Homestead Exemption at this property. You may be on title to the property, but you are not receiving Homestead Exemption. If you are eligible for Homestead Exemption on this property, you must complete your own Homestead Exemption application. You can apply online at https://web.bcpa.net/bcpaclient/#/ HomesteadExemption If you are a co-owner, surviving spouse, trust beneficiary or otherwise believe you are eligible for this exemption, you must file your own Homestead Exemption application to receive the benefit. If you have any questions relating to the death of the owner, the Change Card or need assistance in filing for Homestead or other tax-saving exemptions, please visit our website at web.bcpa.net or contact our Customer Service Department at 954-357-6830. If my office can ever be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at martykiar@bcpa.net. Take care Author: Marty Kiar, JD, CFA

Paula Poundstone at the Parker

As one of the country’s most influential stand-up comedians of our time, Paula Poundstone is known for her smart, observational humor and spontaneous wit.

members emerge and I use that to set my sails. So, a lot of times, I really don’t know what I’m going to talk about until I talk to somebody else there.

Starting out at open-mic clubs in the late 1970s, her career has ultimately led her to not only being a professional comedian and storyteller, but also an actress, author, interviewer, and commentator. Poundstone awards and accolades make a long list, but some of her biggest accomplishments include performing several one-hour HBO comedy specials, providing backstage commentary during the 1992 presidential election on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, being the first woman to perform stand-up comedy at a White House Correspondents Dinner, and hosting a successful comedy podcast called Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone.

Denny Patterson: Yeah, your sets usually involve a lot of audience interaction and crowd work. Can that be tough to do at times? Paula Poundstone: No, it’s mostly the fun part of the night. If there's somebody who I feel like I can't make heads or tails out of, or it seems somehow fractious, I just turn my attention elsewhere.

Poundstone will be coming back to South Florida’s Parker Playhouse for a one-night only set on January 26, 2024, and OutClique recently caught up with her to talk more about it. Denny Patterson: Let me begin by asking, how excited are you to perform in South Florida again? Paula Poundstone: I’m very excited! I haven’t been to Florida in a while, and I’m glad occasionally on a weather map that it’s still there. It could go skittering off into the ocean any minute. Denny Patterson: What can audiences expect from this show? Paula Poundstone: Well, there's no mosh pit, so no one will get hurt physically, but my act is largely autobiographical. I talk a lot about traveling, and everybody makes fun of comics for talking about airplane travel, but hey, it’s a big part of our lives. I don’t have a specific set, but my favorite part of the night is just talking to the audience. I do the time honored ‘what do you do for a living?,’ and this way, little biographies of audience

Denny Patterson: What particularly drew you to the observational brand of comedy? Paula Poundstone: Just observing. When I see something funny, I point it out. I was the kid in the hallway a lot because I was thrown out of the classroom, but laughter is an amazing thing. A sense of humor is this coping mechanism that nature has given us, and I’m not sure if other species have it. Maybe racoons or squirrels, but certainly anything that’s directly related to us like monkeys or chimpanzees. But you have to have a sense of humor to get through life. Denny Patterson: What’s new with your podcast, Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone? Paula Poundstone: Well, we’ve been doing it for about four years now, and like with anything else, I think it gets better over time. It's a comedy podcast, obviously, but we do interview people with real information to share, and many of the little segments we do involve relaying some sort of facts about something. It's been a lot of fun. I do the occasional goofy character, which is something I never would have had the balls to do on stage (laughs). I can only do it there. And I’m not even in the studio with others anymore. I’m by myself in my dwellings, so it’s been fun. I’ve gotten to try some stuff that’s different from my stand-up, and our audience seems to be continuing to grow, which is great.

Sex and the City Creator Candace Bushnell is Coming to the Kravis Center Candace Bushnell, the renowned New York figure, acclaimed novelist, and mastermind behind Sex and the City, is taking audiences on a whirlwind tour of the Big Apple in her new one-woman show, True Tales of Sex, Success, and Sex and the City. From Studio 54 to the Lipstick Jungle and beyond, experience the ultimate girls’ night out and revel in tales of fashion, literature, and sex, all while Bushnell expertly serves up cosmos in Manolos. She recently caught up with OutClique to talk about her life, career, and the show, which will play at West Palm Beach’s Kravis Center January 26-28, 2024. Denny Patterson: Candace, how excited are you to bring your one-woman show, True Tales of Sex, Success, and Sex and the City, to South Florida’s Kravis Center? Candace Bushnell: I am super excited! The Kravis Center is legendary, and I just love South Florida. I know tons of people in West Palm Beach, so hopefully they will all come! It’s amazing to be able to do the show there. Denny Patterson: Overall, what can audiences expect? Candace Bushnell: The show is basically how I created Sex and the City, how hard I worked to get there, why I invented Carrie Bradshaw, and what happened to me after. We’ll play a little game, Real or Not Real, because so many things that happened on the show are a little bit better or worse than my real life, and I answer some of people's most burning questions, like if there is a real Mr. Big. It’s also combined with a little bit of my life story. How I came to New York, as well as a couple naughty sex stories. It really is sort of that universal story of somebody who comes to New York to make it, how I wrote Sex and the City, and the success I had afterwards. I've gotten an incredible response to it. Denny Patterson: Looking back to when you first started writing your column, Sex and the City for The New York Observer, did you ever think it would lead you to where you are today?

Candace Bushnell: I knew that it was my big break. I've been writing for years in New York, and I'd already been writing professionally for 15 years because I came to New York when I was very young. I started getting published when I was 19. I had been working very hard, but I knew that this was my big break, and things kind of kept going from there. Denny Patterson: In your opinion, what made Sarah Jessica Parker perfect for the role of Carrie Bradshaw in the TV series? Candace Bushnell: She’s a New Yorker, so she really gets New York, which I think can be a little bit tricky because so many actresses are based in LA, and that's a very different mentality. Sarah really gets New York. She’s so New York, and that was really fantastic. She just gets the details and vibe from it. Denny Patterson: And what is the best dating advice you can offer? Candace Bushnell: Oh, don’t listen to me! (Laughs). It’s hard because dating has changed in a lot of ways, and I find that there’s no momentum. You see somebody, you have a date, you think it’s going well, and you think you’re going to hear from them again, but you don’t. Everybody seems to be so much busier than they used to be, and I don't know why that is or how that is because technology is supposed to give us more time, but it seems to have given us a lot less time. So, my advice for dating - you have to be happy with yourself. You can’t really rely on somebody else because people seem to be very flaky. There’s a lot of ghosting. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I talk to gorgeous young women in their 20s, and I’m like, if it’s not working for them, who will it work for? Denny Patterson: What do you look for in a guy? Candace Bushnell: I ultimately look for connection. I’ve dated guys of all different ages, from their 30s to 90s, and some kind of connection and momentum would be good. There are a lot of choices these days, so it’s a little tricky.

Latrice Royale & Christopher Hamblin to Take the Stage at Sunshine Cathedral For RuPaul’s Drag Race superstar Latrice Royale and her husband Christopher Hamblin, there truly is no place like home. The pair are set to take the stage at Fort Lauderdale’s Sunshine Cathedral, showcasing their respective productions filled with celebration, inclusivity, and pure entertainment. On January 26, 2024, Hamblin will delve into his Southern roots, exploring the theme of individuality and weaving a tapestry of songs and stories from his religious upbringing in Tennessee, while Royale is set to deliver an eclectic show on February 10 featuring live singing, lip syncing, dancing, and flag twirling. Brace yourselves, she’s ready to bring the house down! Royale and Hamblin both took some time to talk more about their upcoming performances with OutClique. Denny Patterson: Tell me, how excited are you both to perform at Sunshine Cathedral?

Latrice Royale: Oh, I’m extremely excited! To be in a venue where it feels like I’m actually at church and I can pursue and present my ministry, I can’t wait. I’m excited to do something a little different and fun. Christopher Hamblin: Same here. I spent the better part of my career as a musician working in churches, and that’s not a side of myself that I usually share in my shows. I can’t really do this kind of show at, you know, Hunters (laughs). It’s not the same kind of ambience or experience, but when Rev. Dr. Durrell came to us and wanted us both to present something, I thought this would be a natural fit for me and it would open a door for me to show a different side of my artistry. So, I’m looking forward to it. Denny Patterson: Have either of you played at Sunshine Cathedral before? Christopher Hamblin: I once did an offertory on a Sunday when I first moved to Florida. I didn’t pursue working there much because we travel so often, and it wouldn't have been fair to make a commitment if I wasn’t going to be

there a lot. However, I think this will be Latrice’s first time performing there. Denny Patterson: What do you both always hope audiences take away from your sets? Latrice Royale: For me, there’s always an underlying message of self-love, the power of you, believing in yourself, and how much you can accomplish by doing so. There’s always a message of how to make you better when you present your best self. Christopher Hamblin: Then for myself, I really try to reach out to people in my audience that I think might feel lonely. There’s a lot of people that go through life feeling that way, especially if they’re going through something, and I have been one of them. Still am on some days. So, I try to bring a little bit of my own self to what I do in a way that lets people know they're not alone. That we can talk through this and make it through together. Denny Patterson: Are you involved with each other’s shows? Christopher Hamblin: I will be present for Latrice’s performance, and we are going to do some live music together. We’re working on a whole new set of stuff to do together, but Sunshine Cathedral was kind enough to ask me to do my own solo show as well. I don't often get a chance to fully present my own work outside of collaborating with my husband, so I'm very selfishly taking this opportunity (laughs). I also make a lot of different kinds of music, and the music that I'm going to do in my solo show doesn’t naturally come to Latrice. I might convince her to come and do a special solo. You might be inspiring something! Latrice is going to go all out with her show, while I’m kind of going all in. Denny Patterson: South Florida is also your home. How does it feel to perform in the community that you live in?

Christopher Hamblin January 26, 2024

Christopher Hamblin: Oh, it’s the best feeling because we don’t get to do it a whole lot. The kind of stuff that we've started doing, there aren't a lot of spaces that we honestly feel like our work fits in. Not just in Florida, but as we tour. We're doing something outside the norm, so to do this at home, feel the support of the community, and perform at Sunshine Cathedral, which has such a long history of supporting the arts and LGBTQ+ people, combining all those things is amazing. Denny Patterson: Besides Sunshine Cathedral, what are some other projects you’ve been working on? Christopher Hamblin: Latrice is the one with the most going on! Latrice Royale: (Laughs) I do. We recently wrapped up the promo shoot for We’re Here, Season 4, which comes out next year. We’re gearing up for that, and I’ve also been doing some voiceover work for a new animated series coming out on Nickelodeon. I've been doing a lot of different things, which is exciting. So, besides creating and writing new shows, which keeps us both very busy, I’m really trying to focus on more television and acting. Denny Patterson: What was your experience like working on We’re Here? Latrice Royale: The experience was amazing! Obviously, it's a different type of television. This is a documentary style approach, so once you get into the rhythm of what you're trying to do, the work is so palpable and important. I know I got a lot out of my experience by just letting go and really diving into it. So, I'm excited for the world to see the work that we've done, and I am hopeful that it's going to make a difference. It's a great season. Stay up-to-date and connect with Hamblin by following him on Facebook and Instagram @ChristopherHamblin, while Royale can be found on Facebook and Instagram @LatriceRoyale.

Classically Speaking with Composer Mark Hayes Composer Mark Hayes began his musical career rather unexpectedly. At age 10, he was confronted with a decision to choose between a band instrument or piano. He fortuitously chose piano. Several Carnegie Hall concerts later, the rest, as they say, is history. His body of work includes a Requiem, a Te Deum, a Magnificat and over 1,500 pieces of published music. In advance of Mark’s upcoming February 11, 2024, concert at the Sunshine Cathedral, I chatted with him about his latest monumental work scheduled for a major New York premier. Charles Baran: Hello Mark! I’ve been enjoying listening to your music on iTunes. It’s sensational. How did you become a composer? Mark Hayes: I studied piano from an early age and subsequently attended Baylor University in Texas with the goal of becoming a concert pianist. My courses in choral composition and orchestration led me to becoming an arranger and composer of many types of music, from classical to jazz to gospel. Charles Baran: Who are the composers that inspire you? Mark Hayes: I love the romantics, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff. There’s a passion and drama to their music. I also like some of the impressionistic composers like Debussy and Erik Satie. I’m working on this new project right now that’s probably one of the most challenging pieces I’ve ever done. It’s in the Baroque style influenced by J.S. Bach and Handel. There’s a uniformity, a clarity and a symmetry to Baroque music, all these different lines that fit together. It feels solid and satisfying and I’m enjoying it greatly. Charles Baran: Is this the piece you’re premiering at Lincoln Center in May? Mark Hayes: Yes. I’m calling it Kindness: A Chorale and Fugue in the Baroque Tradition. I wanted the piece to focus on the themes of kindness, courage, and compassion. Growing up in Gurnee, Illinois, as a short little introverted gay boy, being kind was seen as being

wimpy. But kindness takes great courage. It’s a really positive piece. It’s a work that not only church choirs can sing, but community choruses and even the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida. It will be heroic and epic and hopefully reminiscent of Bach or Handel. Charles Baran: Will you be previewing it at the Sunshine Cathedral on February 11th? Mark Hayes: It requires a large number of singers so it’s not possible. For the February show, I’m drawing from the 110 piano books I have in print, playing my piano solo versions of film favorites and movie score themes, some classical works and some gospel. In addition, I’ll have vocalists Gabe Salazar and Sara Burns do some wonderful musical theater pieces. Charles Baran: It sounds like a wonderful concert. Mark Hayes: Thank you, Charles. I look forward to seeing you in February!

As the 1920s draw to a close in Berlin, a garish master of ceremonies assures his audience that they will forget all their troubles at the Cabaret. With the emcee's bawdy songs as wry commentary, Cabaret explores the dark, heady and tumultuous life of Berlin's natives and expatriates as Germany yields to the emerging Third Reich. Cliff, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken with English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally’s boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish. Musical numbers include "Willkommen," "Cabaret," "Don't Tell Mama" and "Two Ladies."

Catching Up with GMCSF’s Assistant Conductor Anthony Cabrera Since its founding, the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida (GMCSF) has been deeply committed to inspiring audiences, opening minds, changing hearts, and celebrating our shared humanity. In selecting Anthony Cabrera as their assistant conductor in 2021, the organization found a dedicated individual who shares the exact same values. Formerly the Artistic Director of the Miami Gay Men’s Chorus, Cabrera brings over 25 years of experience in choral directing across public education, churches, and community choruses. During his tenure in Miami, he directed a diverse array of concerts, including those featuring LGBTQ+ themes on a grand scale. Furthermore, Cabrera has maintained a strong presence on the national and international level through his involvement with GALA Choruses, the North American Association

of LGBTQ+ Choral Groups, and he currently serves on the New Harmony Taskforce, a group dedicated to creating resources and conferences to guide choruses in addressing internal issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Beyond his role as GMCSF’s assistant conductor, Cabrera also leads Tropical Wave, the group’s 20-member ensemble composed of singers who invest extensive amounts of time to develop and deliver specialized performances. Cabrera took some time to answer some questions for OutClique. Denny Patterson: After an intensive nationwide search process, you were chosen to be the GMCSF's assistant

conductor in September 2021. What have you enjoyed the most about this position so far? Anthony Cabrera: I find great satisfaction in working with GMCSF because it provides the ability to make great music with an amazing group of people. From the leadership of the organization to the volunteers who work the nuts and bolts of this team to make sure we provide the highest caliber of music possible. My greatest joy, perhaps, is the ability to work with the chorus’ chamber ensemble, Tropical Wave. This is a group of very dedicated and talented individuals with whom I am developing a great bond with. These musicians work hard. Case in point, this past November 12 and 19, we wrapped up two performances of Gabriel Faure’s Requiem with the New Directions Chamber Winds. By December 2, we turned around and performed a full holiday concert. This group is so responsive, and while we take making music seriously, not everything in the process is serious. Collaborating with the chorus is just plain fun, and the interaction is fantastic! Denny Patterson: What about working with GMCSF Artistic Director Gabe Salazar? Anthony Cabrera: Gabe is a wonderful, gifted, talented, and humble leader who truly makes me feel like a collaborator and not just a pair of hands to wave when he cannot be at a rehearsal. Over the past few years, we have been nurturing a really nice friendship. One based on trust, respect, and the love of music. I feel like we make a great team. Denny Patterson: What did you ultimately want to bring to this role? Anthony Cabrera: I wanted to bring my years of experience and track record of working with LGBTQ+ choruses, locally and at the national level, and help the organization to continue growing into a nationally recognized and highly regarded choral institution. One that not only speaks to the LGBTQ+ community, but one that welcomes and is welcomed by our community at large as a musical and social force.

Denny Patterson: Yeah, you have an extensive background in working with LGBTQ+ choruses and overseeing concerts encompassing large scale LGBTQ+ themed works. Has this always been a passion of yours? Anthony Cabrera: It became a passion when I attended my first GALA (Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses) conference in 2008. I realized that LGBTQ+ choruses were not just about putting on, as they said on Will & Grace Season 4, Episode 16, “campy” concerts (laughs). These are spaces for people to develop community, family, and a literal voice. A place to find support and solace. A place to nurture our artistic sides, as well as our social and personal ones as LGBTQ+ identifying persons. So, it is not just about singing, but about personal wellbeing and growth for everyone involved. Denny Patterson: What are some goals you would like to see the GMCSF achieve in 2024? Anthony Cabrera: I look forward to seeing us make a splash at the GALA conference this summer in Minneapolis. Both GMCSF and Tropical Wave will be presenting concert sets. I’d also like to see us continue growing into our name - the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida by presenting concerts, large and small, from Palm Beach to Monroe County. Denny Patterson: What are some upcoming concerts we should be on the lookout for? Anthony Cabrera: Certainly, check out our website for the concerts scheduled for the rest of the season. Hooray for Hollywood will be March 22, 2024, and our Pride concert, Pride: Then, Now, and Forever, will be June 29, 2024. Tropical Wave will also be presenting a concert in May entitled Postcards, featuring an incredible collection of pieces from around the world. Denny Patterson: Before we wrap up, is there anything else you would like to mention or plug? Anthony Cabrera: The next few years are going to be ones of significant growth for GMCSF, and I look forward to being a part of it!
