Visit Lauderdale Hosts a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to Celebrate the Adoption of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program at the Broward County Convention Center

Visit Lauderdale, the official destination marketing organization for Greater Fort Lauderdale, has expanded its partnership with the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program as the Broward County Convention Center signs on as the first convention center in North America to adopt the program. Visit Lauderdale hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony at the convention center on Monday, April 29, 2024.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a simple tool for people with non-visible disabilities to voluntarily share that they may need extra assistance while traveling. Hidden disabilities can range from temporary cognitive conditions to physical, visual, sensory, and processing difficulties, to chronic health conditions such as arthritis and diabetes, chronic pain, and sleep disorders.

“Visit Lauderdale is committed to providing everyone a safe and supportive environment and has long championed inclusion and accessibility tourism by removing barriers in the travel experience for everyone,” said Stacy Ritter, president and CEO of Visit Lauderdale.

According to the World Health Organization, 15% of the world’s population has some sort of disability.

“Accessible tourism allows all people to participate in and enjoy vacation experiences,” said Richard Gray, Senior Vice President of Inclusion and Accessibility at Visit Lauderdale. “Whether they have a hidden or unhidden disability, we want them to feel acknowledged and valued

when they visit Greater Fort Lauderdale. Hopefully, they will return time and time again to discover new places and have great experiences.”

The sunflower has become an internationally recognized symbol for raising awareness for people with hidden disabilities. As part of the program, the sunflower is displayed on lanyards, name badges, pins, wristbands, or a retractable sunflower ID card holder to let staff know that additional traveling support is needed.

All convention center employees will receive Hidden Disabilities Sunflower training and there is now a Zen Room in the convention center dedicated to providing a person with a hidden disability or a traveling companion with the support they need.

The program adds another welcoming dimension to the Greater Fort Lauderdale area, as the program has been incorporated into Visit Lauderdale’s accessible tourism marketing and has been adopted by the Fort LauderdaleHollywood International Airport.

“We are thrilled to welcome Greater Fort Lauderdale/ Broward County Convention Center to the global Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program. They are helping to blaze a path of accessibility and inclusion for people with nonvisible disabilities both locally and nationally,” said Lynn Smith, Regional Director of Hidden Disabilities Sunflower USA.

Visit Lauderdale’s Richard Gray Gets Prestigious Honor

Richard Gray criss-crosses America and the globe extolling the diversity of Greater Fort Lauderdale. The world is taking notice.

He has been given one of the travel and destination marketing industry’s highest honors: the LGBTQ+ Tourism Pioneer Award presented by ITB Berlin.

“Winning a global pioneer award signifies that I have been recognized for my innovative contributions and leadership in inclusion on a global scale,” Gray told OutClique. “It acknowledges my work, creativity, and impact in pushing boundaries and making a significant difference.”

Gray is Visit Lauderdale’s longtime Senior Vice President of Inclusion & Accessibility and has spent years making Broward County a welcoming place for everyone. Visit Lauderdale’s Everyone Under the Sun ad campaign highlights many overlooked or marginalized groups, including people with disabilities and the LGBTQIA+ community.

“We live in a world that’s more connected than ever, and I am honored to be recognized as a global thought leader when it comes to a topic that I am so passionate about. Travel is a human right, and it can and does change lives,” Gray said.

Fellow travel professionals selected him as the winner, saying, “You really deserve international recognition for your outstanding contributions. As a remarkable professional, you have played a pivotal role in influencing global standards for serving disadvantaged and marginalized communities.”

His job has been difficult the past few years, as an increasingly toxic political environment has engulfed Florida from the Panhandle to Key West. Several organizations canceled conventions and other large events in Broward County and the full impact may not be known for years.

“As a person that has experienced discrimination, hurt, trauma, and disappointment in the travel space, it means

so much to me to win this award and be recognized for my leadership,” Gray said.

Despite obstacles, Gray and his team persevere, promoting the love and inclusivity radiating from the Broward Blue Bubble.

He notes that Greater Fort Lauderdale has various organizations and resources dedicated to supporting the LGBTQ+ community, as well as events and initiatives celebrating inclusion and diversity. There is an LGBTQ+ visitors center in Wilton Manors, a gay-friendly beach at Sebastian Street Beach, the Stonewall National Museum, Archives & Library, and a variety of restaurants, clubs, and attractions that are LGBTQ+ friendly.

“Overall, Greater Fort Lauderdale is welcoming and supportive of ALL individuals, regardless of their background, orientation or how they choose to identify,” Gray said. “This is a safe welcoming destination that welcomes all travelers.”

WEST

The Pride Of Key West KEY

Award Winning Island House

Island House Key West is the winner of the 2024 Spartacus Travel Award for Best Gay Resort in the world. For all the thousands of guests who cherish their time at Island House, this is no surprise, but for owner, Bobi Lore, who went to Berlin in March to receive it, the award is a huge source of pride and satisfaction for all the hard work he and his staff have done to renovate the property and perfect the fabulous experience loyal guests of every age have come to expect and appreciate. He says, “It’s my responsibility to make sure that every returning guest finds things even better than their last

visit. Improved amenities, food, beverage, and even better staff service if that is possible. I think of Island House like a drafting pencil. I have to keep it sharpened and constantly refreshed. I never let it get dull.”

For gay men, the world has changed considerably since Island House Key West first opened its doors in 1976. Visibility brought victories in equality and legal rights. Darkened windows in gay bars, or funky gayborhoods are less common features these days. Pride celebrations abound, but their sparkle is less often laced with daring

and danger. (This is not to say that there are no threats to what has been won, but battles are now more often fought in daylight.) What has remained constant is the need for destinations celebrating who we are as gay men, and that is what Island House Key West continues to deliver luxuriously. A tradition of improvement has been maintained through several changes of ownership and continues into the present. Returning guests will find the place polished and perfected, with cherished essentials securely in place to assure them another great stay.

Listen to James Camp, the first owner of Island House Key West, now living in Daytona, describe for OutClique those earliest days.

“My partner Jim Stokes and I came to Key West having purchased with friends the Key Lodge Hotel. We soon sold our share in that venture and bought an old house on Fleming Street, having decided that we liked living in Key West. One night we were out walking the dog and saw that the “Paul’s Apartments” house was for sale. The property consisted of a private residence built in 1895 on the corner of Fleming and White Streets, and sixteen apartments. Jim was an architect who relished this kind of challenge. During our life together we developed over 30 properties. This one called out to us. We decided to make it into a gay guest house. In those days, Key West was just beginning to be the wildly attractive gay destination that it has become. Only one section of our Island House was clothing optional. Recognizing the need for local gay businesses to band together, I hosted the first meeting of business owners who conceived of the Key West Business Guild. I became its first president.

“One day, we were at the airport collecting visitors when we bumped into a friend from Ohio, Michael Frangella, who was then managing The Marlin Beach Hotel in Fort Lauderdale. On the spot, we offered him a job managing Island House. He accepted our offer and ended up staying with us as Island House manager for six years before moving to San Francisco.

“In 1989, we sold Island House to a couple from Toronto, Jack and Jeff, who continued to refine its concept as exclusively catering to gay men. Our clients had been overwhelmingly gay men, but mixed.

20 | OutClique.com

“Jack was a doctor who wanted to make sure that in the event of his death, Jeff would inherit Island House, so he put the property in Jeff’s name. In those days, before same-sex marriage, couples had to go through legal hoops to protect and assure their rights. When Jeff died unexpectedly, the ownership of Island House passed to Jeff’s sister! She ran the operation herself before selling it to Jon Allen and his partner, Martin Kay in 1999.

“When I think back on my years at Island House, my fondest recollections are of my interaction with our amazing guests from around the world. There was no place on the planet like Island House and Key West. I haven’t been back there for many years, but I hear that’s still true.”

At James Camp’s suggestion, Michael Frangella, at home in San Francisco, shared with OutClique his recollections of his years as Island House manager.

“Island House was a joy, and I have fabulous memories of my years in Key West! I was the front desk and reservations manager at the Marlin Beach Hotel in Fort Lauderdale when Jim and Jimmy, whom I had known in Ohio, recruited me to manage Island House. In those days, gay men in Fort Lauderdale used Key West as an escape, as a place to recharge your batteries. You could buy a book of six air tickets for $75 and just go to the airport and jump on a flight whenever you felt like it! My Fort Lauderdale friends thought I was crazy to move there, but Key West was just becoming a gay mecca. When I arrived, they were just building La-te-da [restaurant/bar/ cabaret on Duval Street]. There had been a laundromat in the Island House building and there were these huge industrial size driers in one of the rooms. There were sixteen rooms with kitchens and baths. Single Navy men would rent them. There was a family with kids still living in the main section of the house. Jim Camp and Jim Stokes were starting the transformation, with Jim Stokes himself pounding every nail into the deck they built around the pool. Key West had an ordinance prohibiting fences that were more than a certain height, but Island House needed privacy around the pool, so they got a variance by starting the fence measurement at pool deck level.

“Our clients were mostly gay male couples. Even the

OutClique.com | 21

pool was not clothing optional but in the dark of night, guys would skinny dip. There were no day passes or special events. We had a barbeque grill by the pool on special occasions. We welcomed many young gay men who were just coming out in those carefree days before AIDS. Our very small staff was all gay. I had to pitch in cleaning rooms. Marketing was entirely word of mouth. I convinced the owners to use travel agents as marketers. No computers back then. I had to type by hand every confirmation of each reservation letter! Island House was known as a clean, comfortable, and safe place to stay.

“At first, I had a car which I had parked on the street in front of Island House. I went everywhere on my bicycle. That car never moved. When I went to sell it, I found that vines had crept up the tires and grown into the car! I love it here in San Francisco, but Island House and Key West were pure magic. My friends tell me the resort is even more fabulous today.”

Listen to Bobi Lore pick up the historical narrative from 1999 to the present.

“Jon Allen and Martin Kay had already enjoyed successful

business careers when they purchased Island House in 1999. They had a clear plan for the place. They wanted to make it be on par with the kind of luxury resorts they had enjoyed at other vacation destinations, such as Hawaii. Their meticulous efforts succeeded, and they were happy to spend their days managing the resort and enjoying the company of guests from around the world.

After Martin passed away at the end of 2013, Jon did not want to remain in Key West. With a friend, he moved to Santa Rosa in the Spring of 2014. That is where we met and began a friendship that grew into a relationship. Jon mentioned that he still owned a guest house in Key West, but he never told me it was the best gay resort in the world! Jon liked to travel, and I had a background in travel services. One of our first trips together was to Key West in 2015, with Jon suggesting that we stay in what he called the Owner’s Suite, room 210 at Island House. I had been to Key West before, but staying at Island House was amazing. I told Jon that he had really created a jewel. I’ve always been very glad he did not sell it after Martin’s passing and I encouraged him never to sell it. He had me walking around the place getting the real guest experience without telling anyone who I was, and then reporting back to him. We kept returning

22 | OutClique.com

every three months until 2018. Jon came to realize that I was the person he wanted to pass it on to. We were married that April. That idea of having the resort continue as a legacy really mattered a lot to Jon, not just to him but to everyone who loves it and sees it as a home away from home. I realized that I had to take that stewardship seriously. I tend to focus on the good in anything first. So, I noticed how magnificently functional it was; and all encompassing. A guest never has to leave the premises. Food, bar, clothing optional pool - a guest can get it all from one chair poolside, and then a short wander away there are the indoor amenities. I saw that all the ingredients were in place for a clothing optional and sex positive gay resort. I wasn’t going to mess with that. Once I realized that I would eventually be taking over, I wanted to set in stone all those great ingredients. That is the WHAT, but now the HOW is up to me. It’s a lot of work, but I am having a ball doing this, with the help of the best team I could hope to have. I get joy out of seeing guests return, when I hear them say things like ‘I’ve been coming here for 15 or 20 years and Island House is better than ever, and you now have the best staff ever. They make sure my every need is met, and all questions answered.’ That is my favorite feedback.

“When Jon and Martin bought it in 1999 and gutted the place and rebuilt it, they turned it from a guest house into a luxury resort. The motto given was “Island House is now the world’s first five-star gay resort.” That was over 20 years ago. Those rooms were immaculate but barely upgraded, so one of the things I really wanted to do after the pandemic was renovate every single room. I really love seeing that happen. I am so into making the rooms modern, stylish, and fresh. Honestly, we are spending a lot of time and money on this. I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge and thank my management team. When I had the opportunity to bring Jeff Smead back and add his husband James Braun to the team, I knew we would succeed. James is very good with tools, design and construction, bringing a crucially important skill set. I knew I had the team I needed to handle redecorating, refurbishing and refreshing - in addition to maintaining the place. I bought a structure nearby and turned it into a furnishings workshop and employee housing. Much of what you see in the rooms is actually made by us right here in Key West. We fabricate all the headboards you see with the built-in lights. We fabricate dividers for the bigger rooms. We repurposed the closets. We rethought the electronics in the rooms. Now the rooms look and feel

OutClique.com | 23

bigger. We closed down for eight days last September and totally reimagined the bar and the indoor spa area. We are about 30 rooms into the renovation, but our guests don’t know how busy we are because we do most of the work in our new building across the alley.

In addition to being the best gay resort in the world, Island House Key West has become a unique experience for gay men seeking their tribe. Listen to OutClique founder, publisher and editor, Dr. Steven Evans, describe his first time there.

“I made my first trip to Island House about 20 years ago. I went by myself which is how I like to travel, always meeting interesting people. I had packed Barbara Walters’ audiobook (her biography Audition: A Memoir), to listen to poolside. I have been back so many times – I swear I’ve stayed in every room – with the big challenge being how little will I pack this time. All you need are flip flops, swimsuits and tank tops,

and most of what you pack will end up going home with you unused.

“I was a church organist in Kentucky when I first went to Island House. The feeling of protection I got when I walked through those doors was amazing. I could finally be myself without fear, and I could drop the weight of feeling inferior, alone, or ‘different.’ I remember thinking that this is what it’s like to feel what straight people feel, to relax at a five-star resort without judgment, guilt, or anxiety. I don’t think I ever realized how heavy the weight of being hidden was until I dropped it when I walked into Island House, because there ain’t no carrying it once you are there. At Island House, I finally was convinced that I wasn’t crazy, that I could be me, and that there were people just like me who found in Island House the one place in the world and the one time in the year when we were all okay. Back home in Kentucky, I would create a specific wall calendar for my Island House trips and start counting down the days. Yes, it meant that much to me (and still does).”

24 | OutClique.com

Like owner Bobi Lore, General Manager Jeff Smead and Resort Manager James Braun, take seriously their stewardship of Island House. Jeff speaks for them both when he says, “The reason Island House exists remains the same. Even though the world has changed, the need for a place like Island House is as relevant as it was in 1976. Being a flagship gay resort is at our very core. New/ younger guests sometimes arrive with a misconception about the type of place we are, and you can watch after check-in as that expectation is erased, and the light bulb turns on.

“Visiting Island House helps gay men realize how heavy our burden still is today, and this place alleviates that burden you unconsciously carry. What we love showing

return guests is that we haven’t changed; we’ve grown. We’ve morphed with the changing times to become this 2024 modern version of Island House. Being stewards of a place like this is a privilege we cherish.

“Neither of us ever expected to be in this position at a gay landmark like Island House. It’s more than just our career, it’s our responsibility. It was somehow meant to be that we are at the helm of something so vital to our community. Island House isn’t just lodging, it’s an experience. And it’s not just a resort, it’s a rite of passage. Jon & Martin left their legacy, and these days with Bobi as the owner, together we’re able to leave our own mark. Reimagining the Island House experience is exactly what we were meant to do. We’re meeting our moment.”

Mangia Mangia Pasta Café in Key West

If you are out for a morning walk in Old Town Key West, and pause at the corner of Southard and Margaret Streets because the aroma of a savory sauce has caught your attention, look into the windows of Mangia Mangia to watch them make the pasta they’ll dish up at 5 PM when they open their doors to greet their family of loyal locals and visitors who keep coming back for more great Italian food.

Owners Heather and Michael Barnes have built a fine reputation for themselves since they acquired Mangia Mangia in 2005 from the Baron family who had opened it in 1989. They are not only known for their excellent cooking but also for their community service and their deeply rooted relationships with their neighbors and with their staff who seem never to leave. Heather says, “We have people working here who have been with us since we opened. Sometimes, it reminds me of the TV show Cheers. Some of our people have been here for 25 years!

In Key West there are two kinds of people: those who burn out and those who burn brightly. Michael and Heather are

in the latter group, adventurous in the kitchen, adding new dishes like gluten-free pasta and zucchini pasta (Zoodles!) while keeping their crowd pleasers, including their legendary shrimp rigatoni and their “Quattro Formaggi” (Four cheese) pasta. In Key West, which enjoys an abundance of good restaurants, what makes Mangia Mangia stand out? Michael says, “I wanted Mangia Mangia to have a funky Key West style. We are keepin’ it Keyzzy.”

Heather grew up working in restaurants in Ocean City, Maryland where she met Michael. She had a career in education, and he was an MRI technician. As if running a successful eatery wasn't enough, they have, since coming to Key West in 2000, raised a teen-aged son and a daughter who are both enjoying careers as young professional actors.

Mangia Mangia Pasta Café is your best choice in Key West for casual dining where freshness is the primary ingredient and the bold flavors of true Italian cooking await you.

Etiquette in the Most Delightful No Manors

“A strip tease is a great mental stimulus. It's educational in the most delightful manner.”

Gypsy Rose Lee

The above quote may seem absurd and biased to most, especially since it's the infamous and legendary Gypsy Rose Lee, but the creative team and performers down at No Manors seem to have the very same thought.

Drawing inspiration from iconic establishments like The Box in NYC and the rich history of vaudeville, No Manors set out to carve out its own path in the way of entertainment. Burlesque, a quintessentially American art form and often associated with the female form, has captivated audiences throughout the years from luminaries like the aforementioned Ms. Lee to today’s notable stars Dita Von Teese or Carmen Elektra who was one of the original dancers of the PussyCat Dolls, the very same Dolls that led to the birth of the pop sensation of the same name.

In No Manors burlesque has become a focal point of their weekends with performers, subverting expectations of its guests by bending the norms of gender and sexuality resulting in a unique alluring experience.

"We wanted to create a space where people feel seen, heard, valued, and celebrated—where there are no rules, only endless possibilities,” says Steven Bialos, the brainchild behind No Manors and its concept. “That idea also extends to the performers, not just the guests.”

“It's about celebrating the freedom of expression, embracing the artists and letting go of expectations," says Joshua Kenney, No Manors Events and Entertainment Director. Kenney, a former performer and member of Actors Equity, has championed the idea for their own production since coming on board and to be vigilant that they never take the talent for granted.

The entertainment at No Manors, as unique as it was, wasn’t always so cohesive in tone or style. It took several months, but with a few tweaks like suggesting a later start time for entertainment and a look and vibe that oozes sex, No Manors found its niche and its stars. Enter Phoenix and Damien Lenore, who headline Friday and Saturday nights. Each night the duo asks that guests join them on a journey of intrigue, seduction, and sometimes even laughter. They are the heart and soul of the burlesque at No Manors. If you have been lucky enough to witness them together or separately, their chemistry and magnetic presence is undeniable.

People have come from all over southern Florida to see what is happening on stage and now what began as a venue primarily known for its ambiance and its unusual entertainment is now turning its attention to self-producing shows that are unique to the drive and set them apart from their peers.

The pair, along with Mr. Kenney began to create a project that spoke true to them and felt in alignment with the bar’s guiding principle: expect the unexpected. It began as a simple showcase featuring the Lenore duo and has now evolved into something more akin to an immersive theatrical experience.

"Etiquette just started out as a little idea of trying to create a night of burlesque that was different from what we usually do on Friday and Saturday nights," explains Phoenix Lenore. "We wanted to showcase both classic burlesque and the evolution of the art form, blending elements of comedy, sensuality, and storytelling."

The show, however, took on a life of its own with the introduction of the show's Madame. "Mad Matilda, as she is also known, brought a whole new energy to the stage," Damien Lenore recalls. Matilda was at first intended only to be a feature in rotation. “I was watching the audience be completely enthralled with her as if they were all lovesick puppies. That’s a gift.” In her, Kenney saw a missing piece, a leading lady. And a chance for the show to be more than just a burlesque pageant.

What makes Etiquette truly magical is its ability to transport the audience into a world of glamor, humor, and sensuality. While captivating performances by Damien and Phoenix, and the dominating sultry voice

of Mad Matilda stand as its foundation, it's the rotation of featured performers like the provocative Nicky Monet or the alluring Scorpion Queen, Kymera, that keep things fresh. As if that's not enough, the main cast will routinely change up their numbers while creating new numbers for the show.

“So, it’s literally a new experience every week,” Mr. Kenney explained excitedly, who has even written book scenes to give the show a structure in which to live. Kenney drew inspiration from classic shows like Anything Goes and offBroadway hits like Silence!, a musical parody of Silence of the Lambs

As the countdown to Etiquette's opening night draws closer, Bialos’ dream with No Manors and mission to create memories almost seem inevitable. Looking toward the future, the success of Etiquette so far is a good sign and it hopes to open doors to exciting new projects at No Manors. Admission is $15, a modest investment for an evening filled with such talent. The creative team wants you to know that your ticket purchases go directly towards the performers and also include a complimentary cocktail - who can argue with that?

Seating for Etiquette is limited and available by reservation only with seats available for purchase at the bar on the day of the show.

David Guetta Teams Up With One Republic on New Summer Anthem “I Don’t Wanna Wait”

Grammy-winning global icon David Guetta keeps the smash hits coming with his new single “I Don’t Wanna Wait” alongside Grammy-nominated OneRepublic. Guetta returned to Ultra Miami on March 23rd and surprised fans with a performance of the song alongside 3x Grammy award-winning songwriter/ producer and OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder.

“I Don’t Wanna Wait” is poised to be another runaway success for the French mastermind, who crafts a euphoric chorus interpolating an infectious melody, while Tedder’s unmistakable vocals provide the poignant verses.

With a string of singles and collabs already under his belt, 2024 sees David Guetta picking up where he left off last year. 2023 included “Baby Don’t Hurt Me” with pop megastars Anne-Marie and Coi Leray, which has earned over 700 million streams as the follow-up to Spotify Global #1 and streaming monster “I’m Good (Blue)” with Bebe Rexha, which garnered 2.7 billion global streams, charted at #1 on the official charts across 11 markets, and peaked at #1 on

the US Top 40 & US Dance Radio charts. Both songs earned Grammy nominations for Best Dance/Electronic Recording, bringing him to 11 total career nominations.

Ryan Tedder is an acclaimed songwriter and producer, having contributed to Beyoncé’s recently released COWBOY CARTER on “II Most Wanted” featuring Miley Cyrus. In addition, Ryan has worked with Tate McRae, (serving as Executive Producer of her album THINK LATER, including global smash “Greedy”), Taylor Swift, Adele, Justin Timberlake, Karol G, Ed Sheeran, BLACKPINK, U2 and many more.

David Guetta has skyrocketed to one of the most streamed artists on Spotify globally, with over 42 billion global streams and selling over 50 million records worldwide. Orville Peck Links With Willie Nelson for “Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond Of Each Other”

Groundbreaking country artist Orville Peck joins forces with the legendary Willie Nelson for a cover of “Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond Of Each Other,” his first release since signing with Warner Records. The track is accompanied by a striking video directed by Ben Prince, which boasts an appearance from Nelson himself. Peck celebrated the release by announcing his project Stampede, a collection of duets with his favorite friends.

Peck has always come at country music from a wholly unique perspective, and now, he puts his own spin on a long-celebrated LGBTQ+ country anthem. Recorded by Ned Sublette in 1981, the song was subsequently tackled by Nelson in 2006, pushing the underground track to the mainstream. After Nelson asked Peck to record this

version of the song together, the idea for the Stampede duets project came to life. Peck went on to perform the song at the icon's 90th birthday show at the Hollywood Bowl last year.

"Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond Of Each Other" is Peck's first new release since dropping his acclaimed sophomore album, Bronco, in 2022. A wholly original storyteller, the masked star's music has always pushed boundaries and defied expectations. In 2019, Peck's self-produced debut album Pony won rave reviews and delivered the singles "Dead of Night" and "Take You Back." By the time he released his second album, Peck had already carved out a niche for himself in country music, and well beyond.

Local Organization Needs Support to Tackle the Increase in Homelessness in Wilton Manors

Tom Pietrogallo, licensed clinical social worker and CEO of The Poverello Center, has always felt privileged to help the underserved in the community. But lately, he has seen the needs of a particular group grow—the homeless in Wilton Manors.

The Poverello Center provides nutritious food, health services, and basic living essentials to people living with critical and chronic illnesses including HIV in South Florida. Last year the center served 3,493 people throughout Miami Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach County.

However, the homeless, who are not traditionally served by the center, are showing up hungry.

“They come and they say, ‘I’m hungry. I need something to eat’ and we’ve never turned them away,” Pietrogallo said. “What’s happening these days is an increasing number of people are coming, but food is not their main problem. They have a diverse set of problems that are quite severe, requiring, in my estimation, intervention and the community is not really responding in a way we would want them to so we’re trying to put together resources here to help with some of their needs.”

Some of this increase in homelessness in Wilton Manors is due to the lingering impacts of the pandemic.

“You know, people lost work. People are on the edge sometimes anyway and then they are knocked a few steps back,” he said. “Some of them were knocked into homelessness and they still haven’t recovered.”

While others are homeless because they have been unable to keep up with increases in the cost of living in

South Florida, such as rent, Pietrogallo said that most of the homeless he has seen at the center have severe substance abuse or mental health issues.

Pietrogallo recognizes that homelessness is a complicated situation.

“It's a complex issue. It would have been solved a long time ago if it were simple,” he said.

Broward Health has partnered with The Poverello Center to help to aid the homeless who are turning to the center for food and support—donating $85,000 to help purchase healthy foods. Even with the support of Broward Health, Pietrogallo said that, with about 300 homeless people a month turning to them for help, additional support is needed.

Although the partnership has helped, Pietrogallo said that more resources are needed to feed people healthy meals. These resources can include money or the donation of ready-to-eat food, such as healthy natural peanut butter or tuna packed in water.

The Poverello Center is also piloting a medically tailored nutrition program for homeless people with HIV. The program would provide hot meals that are medically tailored to their specific needs. The program also aims to better connect them to resources and care in the community.

“The issues are complex, and I think that the helping system, in some ways, is broken,” Pietrogallo said. “It works for a lot of people. It’s just not working for all homeless people right now. And the people that it’s not working for are the most complex.”

The Poverello Center located in Wilton Manors had over 400 volunteers last year and served 29,029 weeks’ worth of wholesome, healthy foods that program participants selected. For more information on the center visit: https://poverello.org/about-us/values/

Pride Has a Purpose

It’s a simple thing: marching in a Pride parade. Until cynical political candidates reactivated the anti-LGBTQ “culture wars,” it was easy to forget that this simple act could be “controversial.”

Here are some other simple things: getting checked for STDs, getting on PrEP (the pill or injection that prevents HIV), or getting into HIV care. It’s easy to forget that for many in South Florida, each of these simple acts seems intimidating, expensive, or difficult to schedule.

Finding community, finding care. Those are the hallmarks of Pride month. And one agency is delivering in a big way, with whole-person, wraparound services that literally change–and often save — lives.

Francisco Funes shared his story with OutClique. “I have been coming to Latinos Salud for 6 months, and I am very grateful to the organization because they have helped me get my PrEP medication, despite not having health insurance, and being a person with a short time in the country.”

Francisco noted that the support he receives at the Wilton Manors location goes much further than just getting free PrEP, “I greatly appreciate that my counselor is always

checking up on me regarding my medication by calling me every month and making sure everything is fine with my treatment.”

Being new to the country, Francisco was also surprised to learn that Latinos Salud offers so much more than convenient clinical services. Through the agency’s free community programs, Francisco has built a circle of friends and support in his new home: “I’m also so fortunate to be a member of the Youth Group, because I have been allowed to enjoy various activities, meet new people, and have different experiences. I am very grateful for the beautiful service that Latinos Salud provides.”

Another Latinos Salud member from the agency’s North Miami location also described how the free community events and support helped him take a milestone step toward acceptance: “When I arrived in this country with my parents, I was still in the closet, and I had not told them that I was gay. One day I went to Latinos Salud to get tested for the first time, and I was surprised to know that PrEP was available for free. Not only did the staff give me PrEP, they also invited me to join their Health & Culture group events, where I found community and new friends and that gave me strength to open up to my parents and tell them that I am gay.” While this member

does not yet want to announce his name in a publication, the support he’s found at Latinos Salud is helping him build confidence for a healthy and happy life here in South Florida.

Gabriel also shared his story with OutClique, “Two years ago, when I was diagnosed HIV positive, I was afraid, confused, and not knowing what to do because of my immigrant situation. A friend advised me to come to Latinos Salud to seek help because I do not have insurance or enough money to pay for the treatment.”

Gabriel explains that Latinos Salud’s counselors helped him with multiple needs: “From the first day I arrived at Latinos Salud in Wilton Manors, the entire team of workers treated me with respect, cordiality, and empathy for my situation. They helped me enter the Ryan White program and currently, thanks to all the support and guidance

I received, I have several benefits such as visits to the Doctor, medication for HIV treatment, and a Food Bank. I am eternally grateful to Latinos Salud, and I hope to be able to collaborate or serve in the activities they carry out for the benefit of the community and give back a little of everything they have done for me and how they helped me improve my quality of life.”

Another member summarized his feelings in an anonymous letter: “Coming to Latinos Salud felt like home. It was amazing, feeling comfortable and feeling like I was amongst friends. Most places make me feel like a number, but at Latinos Salud, I feel like family. The services are great, and I am always seen super quick! So it makes it easy to go in and out and not be late for any errands I need to attend.”

Reason #1: Shifting Your Mindset

Instead, focus on sharing life's wonders with a special someone, building a partnership rooted in mutual respect and growth. Dating isn't just about finding "the one"; it's a journey of self-discovery and growth.

To set the stage for meaningful connections, here are 4 things you’ll need:

Reason #2: Navigating the Dating Landscape

Let's address the elephant in the room: Grindr isn't your golden ticket to lasting love. While it may serve its purpose in certain contexts, serious connections often bloom in different soil. Explore alternatives like Hinge, fostering deeper conversations and genuine connections. Venture beyond the digital realm—join LGBTQ+ events, volunteer, or dive into gay sports leagues. The key? Intentionality. Know what you seek and where to find it.

Reason #3: Time Troubles

Busy schedules, fear of commitment, or misplaced priorities—sound familiar? It's time to untangle the web of excuses and reclaim your time for love. Prioritize self-care to recharge and stay grounded amidst life's chaos. Harness the power of time management tools to carve out space for romance. From Stonewall to SunServe

Celebrating a Century of Progress and the Power of Pride

As June begins every year, we are reminded of the importance of having Pride as individuals and as a community. From the embers of Stonewall to the vibrant heart of Wilton Manors – where SunServe stands proudly –we are reminded why this month exists. It's not just a party; it's a testament to the resilience of our LGBTQ+ community and a powerful call to action.

2024 marks 100 years since Henry Gerber founded the first-ever gay rights organization in the United States. How remarkable is it to consider how far we have come these past 100 years? We've made incredible progress in so many respects: non-discrimination protections, marriage equality, the end of don't ask, don't tell, and more representation in positions of leadership than ever before, and many of you were at the forefront of achieving these milestones.

Now, we find ourselves at a critical moment. Brazen attacks on LGBTQ+ youth, women's reproductive rights, and the demonization of the transgender community and immigrants have left many of us not recognizing the ideals that we hold so dear in this country. These are ideals that we have long held up as an example to others around the world. It's hard to imagine that any of us haven't been impacted by prejudice based simply on our sexual orientation or our gender identity. I can't emphasize enough the impact that

this wave of anti-LGBTQ+ attacks is having on the mental health and well-being of our community, many of whom don't have the same support networks that most of us do.

As a community, we're no strangers to adversity. From significant moments in the fight for gay rights, like the Stonewall riots in 1969 through the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, we consistently show our resilience as people. This year, we have the opportunity to stand together for our beliefs and values at the ballot box in what may be one of the most defining elections of our lives. From equal pay and racial justice to reproductive healthcare and climate change, we must stand together, vote, and get our family, friends, and neighbors to vote. Latinos and our black families especially . . . we cannot afford apathy any longer. Our vote is our voice against all injustice. Let's make sure they hear us loud and clear.

Stonewall was our genesis; Pride is our enduring flame. Together, let's make it a force that casts its radiant light on every corner of society.

With Pride and Purpose,

Healthcare Company Works to Reframe the HIV Narrative in South Florida

Despite advances in HIV treatment, misinformation and stigma around the virus persist. Amelia Korangy, director of external affairs strategy and programs at ViiV Healthcare, hopes her organization can help change that.

As the only pharmaceutical company focused solely on HIV, ViiV is determined to raise HIV awareness and help end the HIV epidemic.

“I think the biggest misconception about HIV is that it’s not an issue and it is an issue,” she said. “I think the silence around HIV is a public silence, but this has impacted millions of people who don’t need to live in silence. There doesn’t need to be that stigma related to it.”

Silence is not the only challenge in addressing HIV prevention and patient care. Outdated ideas about who the virus impacts also persist.

According to the latest figures from local government officials, Miami-Dade County has the highest HIV incidence rate in the U.S. Of this rate, the majority of new HIV cases among women stemmed from Black women.

Yet, HIV isn’t something likely to be discussed, especially among women.

“There are so many women living with HIV who are experiencing isolation and stigma and shame because there’s not a whole lot of conversation and, for a long time, there haven’t been many networks that women could tap into to talk about their experiences around HIV,” Korangy said.

Among women diagnosed with HIV in 2021, Blacks

accounted for 60% of cases, according to the Florida Health Miami Dade County.

The impact of HIV also extends to South Florida’s youth. Korangy said, while HIV does impact women in South Florida, the majority of people locally who are newly diagnosed with HIV are young Black gay men.

“It’s really disproportionately impacting high school students and folks 20 to 34 make up more than half of all new diagnoses and people living with HIV in Miami,” she said. “So, it’s really affecting young queer people and Black women.”

When it comes to HIV prevention and care Korangy said that where you live matters. People are just more likely to encounter HIV if they live in South Florida.

“It’s not because any person or persons are doing anything wrong. It’s because that’s how the sexual networks are locally,” she said. “There are a lot of people living with HIV, many of whom don’t know it or are not able to access the care that they need.”

To help combat this, ViiV Healthcare is investing in raising awareness and community programs across South Florida. A recent initiative called Risk to Reasons reframes HIV prevention for women by changing the conversation from HIV risks to the motivating reasons women have for HIV prevention.

Through community partnerships, programs, and initiatives, ViiV is committed to not only fighting the misconceptions about HIV in South Florida—but to ending the epidemic for all.

MISTR, Known for its Free Online PrEP and Long-Term HIV Care, is Now Prescribing DoxyPEP

MISTR, the largest telemedicine provider offering free online PrEP and long-term HIV care in all 50 states, DC, and Puerto Rico, is now prescribing Doxycycline PostExposure Prophylaxis (DoxyPEP), an antibiotic that reduces bacterial STIs, including gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis. Patients can now use MISTR’s seamless telehealth platform to receive DoxyPEP online for free.

With this launch, MISTR plans to further solve the issue of access and adherence to PrEP and HIV care, and now offers patients access to post-exposure care, in addition to their existing preventive and long-term HIV treatment options, which include PrEP and antiretroviral therapy (ART). This comes at a time when the rate of STIs continue to rise - in 2022, more than 2.5 million cases of syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia were reported in the U.S; of that population, gay and bisexual men are disproportionately affected.

“Despite an ongoing STI epidemic affecting the LGBTQ+ community, there are few resources available for this underserved, vulnerable community to get the preventative medication they need,” said Tristan Schukraft, CEO and Founder of MISTR. “I’m proud that MISTR is democratizing access to PrEP, HIV Care, and now DoxyPEP.”

DoxyPEP has already shown promising results in reducing the rates of certain STIs. An NIH-funded study published by the New England Journal of Medicine in April 2023 found that doxycycline as post-exposure prophylaxis, now known as DoxyPEP, reduced syphilis by 87%, chlamydia by 88%, and gonorrhea by 55% in individuals taking HIV PrEP, and reduced syphilis by 77%, chlamydia by 74% and gonorrhea by 57% in people living with HIV. Now MISTR patients can receive DoxyPEP, in addition to their PrEP or HIV care medications.

This launch comes on the heels of immense growth for MISTR, with over 300,000 patients served. The company has plans to further expand their product portfolio in 2024, and open the doors to their MISTR storefronts. To learn more about MISTR, visit mistr.com.

Holy Cross Health Earns

“LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality High Performer” Designation

Holy Cross Health has announced their “LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality High Performer” designation from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC). The designation was awarded in the 16th iteration of HRC’s Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), released today. A record 1,065 healthcare facilities actively participated in the HEI 2024 survey and scoring process. Of those participants, 462 received the “LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality High Performer” designation.

“Health inequities are systematic differences in the health status of different population groups. Social determinants of health such as poverty, unequal access to health care, lack of education, stigma and racism are underlying, contributing factors of health inequities. Turning the tide of these inequities is not only possible, but also imperative;

Holy Cross Health has recognized this, making health equity an explicit and implicit priority. Holy Cross Health is an agent of local change and is changing the narrative, taking action that will promote health equity. These issues are an important priority for healthcare professionals year-round, not just during Pride Month,” said Kim Saiswick, Ed.D., R.N., LMHC, Vice President of Community Health and Well-Being at Holy Cross Health.

Holy Cross Health continues to be a leader and change agent in the healthcare arena. Holy Cross ranked in the top 25% as one of America's Best-In-State Hospitals 2024 (Newsweek) which recognized 600 leading hospitals across the nation. As a Catholic not-for-profit community hospital, Holy Cross’ commitment to serve all stands as a beacon to many marginalized communities and those lacking

72 | OutClique.com

access to healthcare. Holy Cross welcomes the LGBTQ+ community and is here to meet its healthcare needs.

“As anti-LGBTQ+ extremists look to strip away healthcare access at every turn, LGBTQ+ people and their loved ones are looking for healthcare providers to offer and champion fully inclusive services, The Healthcare Equality Index is helping people find facilities where welcoming policies and practices are the standard,” said Kelley Robinson, President of the Human Rights Campaign. “We know that LGBTQ+ people – especially our trans family – continue to face discrimination in the doctor’s office. No one should have to put their health on the backburner for fear of mistreatment in a healthcare facility or by their doctor.”

Key highlights from the report include:

• Targeted Health Disparities Reduction Plans: Encouragingly, 71% have an official plan for reducing

health disparities that specifically includes LGBTQ+ patients in addition to race, ethnicity and linguistic concerns.

• Work to Be Done: Only 27% have an externally promoted specific program to provide patient navigation or advocacy services to transgender patients.

• Bias Elimination and Welcoming Interactions: Just over half (53%) have a policy or policies that specifically outline procedures and practices aimed at eliminating bias and insensitivity, and ensuring appropriate, welcoming interactions with transgender patients.

• EHR SOGI Data: Major increases are seen in the number of healthcare facilities collecting sexual orientation and gender identity-related data in their Electronic Health Records systems. Seven of the eight relevant data points had double-digit increases.

• Pronouns in Electronic Health Records: The ability to collect and display a patient’s pronouns rose from 44% to 74%. This is an important tool to help prevent misgendering a patient.

• FMLA-Equivalent Benefits: 38% offer FMLAequivalent benefits that allow employees to take family and medical leave to care for same-sex partners as well as the children of a same-sex partner, regardless of biological or adoptive status – this is up from 34% in 2022.

• Comprehensive Benefits for Domestic Partners: 41% provide medical and comprehensive health benefits to domestic partners of benefits-eligible employees up from 34% in 2022. This is the first increase in this measure since the 2015 Obergefell decision on same-sex marriage.

• Employee Resource Groups: 72% have an officially recognized LGBTQ+ employee resource group.

• Community Engagement and Support: 92% took part in or supported one or more LGBTQ+ related events or initiatives in their service area.

This year’s HEI comes as LGBTQ+ adults are twice as likely as non-LGBTQ+ adults to be “treated unfairly or with disrespect by a doctor or healthcare provider” in the last three years, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. The impact of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation combined with a history of discrimination in healthcare settings has the potential to cause even more LGBTQ+ people to delay or avoid seeking healthcare, which makes the HEI even more salient for those looking to find LGBTQ+-inclusive care.

2024 Estimate of Taxable Values

The preliminary 2024 property values are now showing on our website at web.BCPA.net. Florida Statutes require our office to use January 1 as the date of assessment each year. Our office must consider changes in market conditions – up or down – when developing the Just/Market Values each year. The 2024 Just Values are based on the market data from January 1, 2024 back through January 2, 2023, with January 1, 2024 as the date of assessment. If you purchased your property in 2024, your 2024 purchase price along with comparable market data from 2024 will be used in setting your property’s 2025 Just/Market Value. Our office will mail the 2024 TRIM (proposed tax) Notices to all Broward property owners in mid-August. This notice will show your property’s 2024 Just Value, Assessed/Save Our Homes Value, all tax-saving exemptions you are receiving, and the proposed tax rates as set by the various taxing authorities listed on the notice.

Quarterly Tax Payment Installment Plan

While the Property Appraiser’s Office does not set or collect taxes, our office receives many calls from residents inquiring about installment tax bills and their recently approved exemptions. Broward County’s Records, Taxes & Treasury Division is responsible for the billing and collecting of property taxes.

For property owners on the 2024 installment payment plan, the first two installment payments (June 2024 and September 2024) are based on the previous (2023) tax year. This means residents who have been approved for 2024 Homestead Exemption or other exemptions will not see these 2024 exemptions on either the June or September installment bills. The final two installment bills (December 2024 and March 2025) will be adjusted to include any 2024 exemptions or changes to the property’s taxable value. The deadline to apply for Broward County’s Installment Payment Plan was May 1, 2024. Should you have any questions regarding the payment of property taxes, the Tax Collector’s Office can be reached at 954.357.4829 or by email to Revenue@broward.org.

If my office can ever be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at martykiar@bcpa.net.

Coming to Life

I can still remember sitting on the couch at middle school youth group and hearing my pastor say these words: “Being gay means a life of loneliness, pain, and destruction.” I’m sure my eyes darted around the room, to see if anyone else was reacting to what he was saying. By 6th grade I was already fairly certain that I was gay and hearing that this meant sadness and destruction was making my stomach churn.

This is a common stereotype about LGBTQ+ people and unfortunately religious communities are often at the forefront of pushing these images. I can’t tell you how many times growing up I was told that this was a sickness that needed treatment if I was going to live a fulfilling life.

But the older I got, the more I grew in my faith and my sexuality. I started to push against these negative images of LGBTQ+ people. In college I met a lesbian pastor, two gay dads raising their foster children, a trans doctor teaching at a medical school, and a bi activist working on inclusion and visibility. The more I immersed myself into the LGBTQ+ community, the more I met queer people of all stripes and got to hear their stories of faith, hope, adversity, and love.

These negative stereotypes didn’t fit our community, and they didn’t fit me, either. If ever I experienced loneliness, pain, or destruction in my life, it was due to homophobia, not because I was queer. The beauty and diversity of our rainbow family was giving me hope for my future and inspiring me to live with authenticity.

As a pastor, I have many favorite Bible verses. One of them is John 10:10, where Jesus says to his disciples, “I have come that you might have life and have it more abundantly.” And this is the question I try to ask myself each day in my journey of faith: Where am I experiencing abundant life? In those places of abundant life, I know that God is with me; inspiring me, sustaining me, and giving me hope.

I experience abundant life in a lot of places: in the beauty of nature, in the love of my family and friends, and in the joy of my call as a pastor to my church. And perhaps most of all, I experience abundant life as a part of the LGBTQ+ community. I witness our courage, our resilience, our celebration, and our pride. Each of these makes me come alive and inspires me to grow even more as a part of this family.

During this Pride Month, it is my hope that you are finding a place where you “come alive” as a part of the LGBTQ+ community. We have so much to offer the world and one another. Let us be a place of abundant life for all people, where everyone can find a place within the family!

Coming Out and Going Forward

There is an ancient word used in scripture that is translated as “go forth,” but a more literal translation would be “go forward to [or for] yourself.”

How great is it to be encouraged to keep moving forward until you are living your truth fully and celebrating who you are?

That is what coming out is: Discovering and loving who you are and sharing the gift that you are with the world.

Daring to walk toward yourself, embracing and celebrating your authentic self, is empowering and can be transformational.

Coming out first to yourself, then, if you are a person of faith to the God of your understanding (perhaps even giving thanks for your self-discovery and acceptance), and then to at least one other person, will allow the

light of truth to shine, and our world needs both truth and love right now.

Not everyone will celebrate your truth, but some will, and you will meet others who will delight in knowing the real you.

We each must do it in our own way and in our own time, but everyone who comes out begins a journey to pride and empowerment and they light the way for others to do the same.

Coming out is a gift to ourselves, and living our truth is a gift to the world. Coming out may be political, but it is also healing, it is spiritual, and it is generous.

Thank you for being who you are, and for sharing your truth with the rest of us. Have a happy Pride Month and may our LGBTQIA+ community bask in the blessings of pride and joy.

A Milestone of Inclusion The United Methodist Church Lifts Ban on LGBT Clergy

In a landmark decision that marks a significant shift in its history, the United Methodist Church (UMC) has officially repealed its longstanding ban on LGBT clergy. This pivotal move comes after years of internal debates and division within the church on issues surrounding sexuality and inclusion.

For decades, the UMC, one of the largest Protestant denominations worldwide, upheld policies that restricted openly LGBT individuals from serving in clergy roles. These policies not only caused deep divisions within the church but also led to painful conflicts among its members, with some advocating for more inclusive practices while others held onto traditional interpretations of scripture.

The recent General Conference, however, signaled a turning point. After extensive deliberations, a majority of the delegates voted in favor of removing the restrictive language from the church's Book of Discipline that prohibited LGBT individuals from ordination and marriage. This decision aligns with a growing trend among Christian denominations to embrace a more inclusive approach towards sexuality and gender identity.

The reaction to the repeal has been mixed. Many members and clergy have expressed relief and joy, viewing it as a step towards healing and unity within the church. "It’s a recognition of the gifts and graces that LGBT individuals bring to our faith community," said one clergy member, reflecting the sentiments of many who have long advocated for this change.

Conversely, some members express concerns about the departure from traditional biblical interpretations,

indicating that the debate on faith and sexuality is far from over. These differing views underscore the ongoing theological and ethical discussions that continue to shape the church's journey.

This decision is not just about policy changes; it’s about people. For many LGBT members of the UMC, this repeal represents a long-awaited affirmation of their full participation in the spiritual life of the church. "This is about more than acceptance; it's about acknowledgment that we, too, are called by God," shared a seminary student who can now pursue ordination without hiding her identity.

The UMC's decision to allow LGBT clergy comes at a critical time when many religious organizations are reevaluating their positions on inclusion and equality. This move may influence other denominations and faith communities, potentially leading to broader shifts in how religion interacts with modern issues of human rights and diversity.

As the United Methodist Church embarks on this new chapter, it faces both opportunities and challenges. The implementation of this decision will require careful navigation through theological education, pastoral care, and community relations to foster an environment where all members, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, feel truly welcomed and valued.

This milestone, while a cause for celebration for many, also serves as a reminder of the work that remains in the journey toward full inclusion. It reflects a broader movement within global religious communities towards embracing diversity not as a barrier, but as a bridge to a more compassionate and understanding world.

Eco-Learning on the Go: How MODS' STEMobile Is Cultivating Tomorrow's Environmental Stewards

The Museum of Discovery and Science's (MODS) STEMobile, a fleet of mobile makerspaces, is a pivotal force advancing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education in South Florida - with a keen focus on teaching environmental awareness and sustainability launched in 2021. This unique initiative is designed to foster a deep connection between students and the natural world, aiming to nurture future environmental stewards committed to protecting our planet.

Embedded in the larger framework of MODS' Hub for Resilience Education, the STEMobile initiative encompasses five vehicles that make their way to schools, libraries, non-profit youth agencies, senior centers and community gatherings throughout South Florida all year long. These mobile units are equipped to deliver specialized, age-appropriate programs, ensuring that learners from all backgrounds and educational levels have access to highquality environmental education. The STEMobile is an extension of the popular MODS’ The Hangar Makerspace, a permanent exhibit, which is a diverse fusion of a science lab, engineering workshop, innovation workshop and art area that is designed to be flexible and accommodate a wide range of collaborative activities.

One of the flagship programs, "Dive, Fly and Grow," targets early learners by introducing them to the wonders of marine ecosystems, native birdlife of the Everglades and the importance of Florida citrus trees. Such programs are foundational, instilling a profound connection to the environment for children at a young age. Recognizing early childhood as a critical period for developing empathy

and resilience towards environmental challenges, the STEMobile leverages unique, interactive experiences to shape the conservationists of tomorrow.

MODS offers several educational initiatives that feature the STEMobile program. The Museum provides two full days of interactive STEMobile activities and two field trips for 2,500 students in 19 public elementary schools in the City of Fort Lauderdale, along with two professional development courses for educators. Annually, the STEMobile program impacts 75,000 individuals, with about 90% of its offerings free to low-income children and families. Additionally, a special initiative funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services provides free STEMobile programs, resource kits and educator memberships to early learning centers in Broward County.

The STEMobile outreach program is an essential instrument in promoting environmental education throughout Florida. By engaging youth and the community at-large with meaningful environmental education, the STEMobile not only fosters a greater appreciation for the natural world but also equips individuals with the knowledge and tools to advocate for a more resilient and sustainable future. Through its comprehensive and inclusive approach, the STEMobile is charting a path toward a greener, more environmentally conscious generation.

Join us on this journey towards sustainability and become a part of the change. Visit our website, MODS.org, to learn how you can support the STEMobile program and contribute to a greener tomorrow.

Pride is a Protest Too!

My name is Miss Bouvee and I am a full time drag queen living and working in South Florida. On May 16, 2023, I had thousands of dollars of work lined up, or in negotiations, for various gay pride events spanning from Key West, Naples, St. Pete, and of course my homefront of Wilton Manors. Many of the gigs were on outside stages or in spaces in the open air. On May 17, SB1438 was signed into law and went into effect immediately. By May 19, all of the work was gone. This bill was not only anti drag, it was terribly transphobic.

As a result, several prides continued in the month of June without the presence of hired and professional drag performers in public forums like concert stages or as celebrity hosts. We watched while you all partied and celebrated. While many of you dressed in drag in solidarity, there was very little consideration given for the livelihood we all lost and silence we were asked to keep. We, your drag and trans community, were put back in the closet.

I am reminded of Martin Niemoeller’s anti-nazi poem titled “First they came for.” If you are unfamiliar, it is a poem that, to paraphrase, goes like this:

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

In November of 2023, SB1438 was overturned. I want to acknowledge Hamburger Mary’s in Orlando who said no, we won’t listen to this and we will fight this. I am proud to say, they did and they won! They resisted and because they did so, the conversation continued. In the end, they were on the right side of theirs, his and her-story.

My story is one of probably 10’s of thousands across the nation in various states that enacted, or are about to enact, similar laws. But I am convinced that while these laws are not our fault, they are our responsibility to fight against. We must remember that Pride is not only a celebration, but a protest. Don’t forget that, because next year, it could be you they come for.

Stacy Lentz on LGBTQ+ Advocacy and Preserving Stonewall’s History

For more than a decade, Stacy Lentz has been an influential advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, notably playing a pivotal role in the restoration and revitalization of New York City’s historic Stonewall Inn. This June marks 55 years since the site’s 1969 riots, which many view as the start of the gay rights movement.

Now a co-owner of the bar, Lentz continues to enhance the well-being of the queer community and strive for equality. She actively engages in organizing events and fundraisers for prominent LGBTQ+ organizations like GLAAD, Marriage Equality USA, Lambda Legal, and the Human Rights Campaign, and she regularly collaborates with Heritage of Pride to coordinate some of the largest events during NYC’s annual Pride Week.

Additionally, along with Stonewall’s fellow co-owners, they are expanding the bar’s legacy through its official and only nonprofit, The Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative (SIGBI). Its mission is to provide educational and financial assistance to grassroots organizations across the country working to eliminate the social intolerance that is impacting the lives of LGBTQ+ citizens.

OutClique recently caught up with Lentz to talk more about Stonewall, her activism, and more.

Denny Patterson: This June will mark 55 years since Stonewall’s historic uprising. How significant would you say that is?

Stacy Lentz: I think it's very, very historic, and I think it’s time for us to remember how far we’ve come but also how far we have yet to go. Especially with this year being an election year. It’s important to remember what our ancestors did to get us to this moment and how much further we still have to go to ensure global equality.

Denny Patterson: You are continuing to help expand Stonewall’s legacy through its official and only nonprofit organization, The Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative (SIGBI). Can you talk more about that and its overall mission?

Stacy Lentz: My business partners and I founded SIGBI back in 2017 because we saw an opportunity as a lot of brands and corporations were approaching us going into Stonewall’s 50th in 2019. We had this opportunity to truly make an impact for our community by forming our own nonprofit and taking money from these corporations and brands and spreading it to grassroots organizations all over the globe. It's been terrific for us, and it was super important that we funded grassroots activists in some of the most marginalized areas.

Denny Patterson: How can allies help support the LGBTQ+ community, not just in June, but all year round?

Stacy Lentz: There are ways to do that, and it doesn’t need to be financially. Support a LGBTQ+ nonprofit, whether that’s through donations, signing petitions, or amplifying the work they’re doing on the ground. Also, and this is the biggest thing you can do, just vote. Not just at a presidential level, but all the way down to a school board level. Don’t vote against your friends, family, or people that you say you care about.

Matt Cullen Spotlights Queer Diversity with Popular YouTube Series

Believing that every member of the queer community aspires for love, secure housing, good health, supportive relationships, and the daily joy of living with a smile, Matt Cullen is humanizing LGBTQ+ people in a unique way with his inspirational documentary series, Our Queer Life

From celebrities and street hustlers to drag queens and those living in off-grid communities, Cullen connects with people from every color of the rainbow. Not only do these intimate portraits showcase their individual journeys, but also how they are shaping a stronger and more resilient community.

OutClique had the opportunity to sit down with Cullen and talk more about the series and its origins, as well as his love for one-on-one conversations, which interview impacted him the most, and what’s next.

Denny Patterson: As a freelance documentarian and journalist, you are best known for your digital series, Our Queer Life . Can you tell us more about the project and what viewers can expect?

Matt Cullen: Our Queer Life is a digital docuseries that centers on me diving deep into the queer community in a way that I've really never seen done before. I've spent more than two years now interviewing people from all different walks of life in our community. From ex-Mormons in Salt Lake City and street hustlers in Los Angeles to celebrities and Drag Race girls, I’m really learning about the hurdles and things they had to go through to live their authentic truth.

Denny Patterson: What initially inspired you to showcase these intimate portraits of people in the LGBTQ+ community?

Matt Cullen: I think for me, after COVID, I just had a yearning and a strong desire to learn about other people in our community and what they had to go through in order to live authentically for themselves. Thankfully, I’ve lived a very privileged life in the sense that my parents have accepted me since the moment I came out, and I know that’s not the case for so many people in our community. So, I was just hungry to learn. I’ve always been a very introspective person, one-on-one kind of conversationalist, and this experience broadened my mind and taught me a lot about our community. It showed me the strength and uniqueness that we all have in our community. This started from a very organic place, but it transformed into something much bigger. I am eating, sleeping, and breathing this show.

Denny Patterson: Whose story would you say resonated with you the most?

Matt Cullen: If I had to pick somebody, I would choose this trans woman named Mousie. She was a street hustler and spent her life in and out of jail since 1992, but what I loved about her was her resilience and her want to stand up for people in our community. She never allowed anyone to talk down to anybody in our community, and she was ready to throw down if they did. She was really the first person that introduced me to the world of street hustlers in Los Angeles and that side of life, and she truly trusted me. Unfortunately, she passed about a year and half after our first episode. It’s been wild, but I feel her spirit with me as I continue the series because she always told me how proud she was and how she loved how I portrayed her story. I felt very connected to her, and I think my audience did as well.

Skintight by Joshua Harmon a Neurotic Family Comedy, Tackles

Age-Old Beauty Standards at Island City Stage

Beauty isn’t everything. Why is it the only thing? Delve into the neurotic New York family dynamic of Island City Stage’s newest comedy, Skintight by Joshua Harmon, running May 30 through June 23, 2024.

Initially premiering Off-Broadway in 2018 at the Roundabout Theater in New York City, Skintight examines the nature of love, the power of attraction, and the ways in which a superficial culture persists in teaching its children that all that matters is what’s on the inside.

“I love this play because it isn't afraid to explode the cliche that what's on the inside of a person is more important than what's on the outside. Maybe, we CAN love someone for their beauty or their money,” said Andy Rogow, artistic director of Island City Stage. “It's also an engrossing story about how parents and children navigate their relationship when previous generations haven't taught them how to love unconditionally. The neediness of all the characters in this play create fireworks that are both outrageously funny and searingly caustic.”

Reeling from her ex-husband’s engagement to a much younger woman, Jodi Isaac turns to her famous fashion-designer dad for support. Instead, she finds him wrapped-up in his West Village townhouse with Trey, who’s 20. And not necessarily gay. But probably an

adult film star. At least, according to Jodi’s son. Who’s also 20. And definitely gay.

Playwright Joshua Harmon brings neurotic family drama and comedy to the forefront as father and daughter contend with the age-old questions of how to age gracefully in a world obsessed with youth and where love fits into it all.

Harmon's other plays include Bad Jews, Significant Other, Admissions, and Prayer for the French Republic. He and Sarah Silverman co-wrote the libretto for The Bedwetter based on her memoir. His plays have been produced on Broadway and the West End; off-Broadway at Roundabout Theatre Company, Lincoln Center Theater, Manhattan Theater Club and Atlantic Theater Company; across the country at Geffen Playhouse, Speakeasy, Studio Theatre, Theater Wit, About Face, Actor's Express, and The Magic, among others; and internationally in a dozen countries. He is a two-time MacDowell fellow and an associate artist at Roundabout. He is a Juilliard graduate.

Skintight is directed by Rogow and stars Suzanne Ankrum, Laura Argo, Jeff Brackett, Daniel Barrett, Louis Pedraza and Steve Schroko.

Island City Stage’s 12th Season closing production will be Die! Mommie Die! by Charles Busch (Aug. 29 – Sept. 22).

Reunite for a Sensational Presentation of Amor Brujo

Experience the electrifying fusion of passion and rhythm as the world-renowned Siudy Garrido Flamenco Company, led by acclaimed dancer and choreographer Siudy Garrido, joins forces, once again, with Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso and South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) for the return of the critically acclaimed flamenco dance-theater production, Amor Brujo. The one-night-only event occurs on Saturday, June 15, at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.

The star-studded production also features notable screen actor and Broadway star George Akram. Akram gained recognition for his portrayal of Bernardo in the hit Broadway revival of West Side Story from 2008-2011, making history for being in the longest-running Broadway production of West Side Story and winning a GRAMMY for Best Musical Theater album. Also featured is Latin GRAMMY nominee Argentina López, and acclaimed flamenco virtuoso José Manuel Álvarez.

This evocative collaboration brings to life the passionate narrative of Candela, a grieving widow who finds new love amidst the presence of her husband's ghost. Based on “El Amor Brujo” by Manuel de Falla, Amor Brujo bridges the beauty of flamenco artistry and classical music, setting the stage for a mesmerizing journey.

For the 2024 performances, Siudy Garrido has restaged Amor Brujo and will premiere a new section that features flamenco compositions by José Luis de la Paz, inspired by the lead characters of "El Amor Brujo." In the new section, Maestro José Luis dela Paz's arrangements for Spanish guitar explore flamenco styles such as "Seguirilla" and "Guajiras," adding depth and richness to the performance.

"Amor Brujo has been a journey in itself. Bringing flamenco dance to Falla's music, immersing myself in each character to tell the story through dance is very challenging as a choreographer and performer,” explains Garrido. “Every time we restage it, it's a new opportunity to delve deeper into this fascinating story and Falla's timeless music, which transports us to a distant Andalusia."

Maestra Alfonso adds, “Flamenco is an artform that speaks to the soul and Siudy Garrido has the remarkable gift of bringing out the soul of Falla’s music through breathtakingly beautiful choreography and a truly innovative approach to elevating the culture and art of flamenco. We are simply thrilled to perform this captivating work, together again, and expect it to be even more spectacular and meaningful than ever.”

Oh, So Proudly They Sing – GMCSF Returns to The Parker

On Saturday, June 29 at The Parker, the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida (GMCSF), will present a pride concert that celebrates, embraces, and connects the diverse history of our LGBTQ+ community from the early days of Stonewall to the present. Gabe Salazar, the Artistic Director of GMCSF has titled the program, Pride: Then, Now, and Forever, (A Multigenerational Concert Celebration)

When asked to elaborate further, Gabe shared his thoughts. “I wanted to share a concert that brings generations together by finding commonalities through our music. Our community has so much history, and we want to honor those who have come before us. We also want to celebrate those who continue to fight for the good fight and change our world for the greater good of humanity. We will see fun pride anthems from "I'm Coming Out," Cher's iconic song, “Believe,” and some fantastic new commissioned works that address the theme of this concert. The first one is called "Don't Say Gay," written by Los Angeles-based composer David Volpe. This song deals with some of the issues we face in our community, especially in Florida. The second piece, "We've Come Through the Storm," was written by Tom Nichols and Dan Chadburn. They are two outstanding composers and musicians who support our chorus. I asked them to write a song dealing with our multi-generational-themed concert this year, and they wrote a powerful and meaningful piece that will be a standard in our repertoire moving forward.”

The fourteen-year-old organization has seen tremendous growth in the past several years. Salazar has brought an exciting musical vision that has helped the chorus grow artistically resulting in an increased interest in the group. Executive Director Mark Kent agrees. “We've developed

into a larger group of singers from a really broad reach in South Florida (North Palm Beach to Homestead to Naples). Our artistic quality has really soared, especially since Gabe Salazar took the lead. We've really become a major cultural asset for South Florida.”

The chorus, with over 180 members strong, ranges in age from twenty to eighty-plus. There are nonbinary members and two female members. Each member brings their own unique story which adds to the tapestry on display at each performance. “Storytelling around the generations,” as Edward Otto Zielke, Director of Marketing and Sponsorship puts it.

In July, 100 members of GMCSF will travel to Minneapolis for the Gala Choruses Festival performing on Sunday, July 14. Over 110 LGBTQ+ choruses are performing, including four from Canada, three from Mexico and several from South America. Bert Cohen, GMCSF's GALA Chorus Representative, feels the excitement growing. “Meeting and sharing stories with others from different cities, states, and countries gives us all an exciting experience and renewed energy and commitment. I love the emotional roller-coaster that each group brings.”

Taking the group to Minneapolis costs money and I asked Zielke how someone can help. “If someone would like to donate, they can contact me or our new Development Manager, Fidel Garcia, at 954-763-2266.”

You can purchase a live stream pass for the July Gala Choruses Festival at GalaChoruses.org/Resource/Livestream.

Playwright Craig Lucas, best known for “Prelude to a Kiss,” returns with "The Dying Gaul," a modern American tragedy capitalizing on the anonymity of the Internet and the consequences it brings. Lucas has written an emotionally deep story about how failed redemption can quickly curdle into revenge. A love triangle with a powerful, ruthless film producer and a fascinating but woefully under-stimulated wife leads the protagonist down a dark path where an anonymous internet chat room becomes a haunting sexual nightmare that ignites a shocking finale.
