IN DEDICATION OF MAYOR FLIPPEN

I

By Steven O. Evans, PhD

arrived home Tuesday night, February 25, 2020, from a trip with my boyfriend. We had been visiting my dad who was on his annual fishing trip. Just as we had gotten home, I was devastated to hear the news about the passing of my friend and our Mayor of Wilton Manors, Justin Flippen. Justin was kind enough to come to our mixer a few weeks ago, and I had just run into him a few days ago at a local business on “The Drive,” as he was socializing and making his rounds as Mayor. We were so lucky, blessed, and honored to have had Justin as our Mayor of Wilton Manors. He

truly loved being mayor of our city. His leadership at projects, meetings, and governing was a skillset that helped move our city forward. But Justin also loved being Mayor because he enjoyed people - the people of our city. He was always out and about, talking, smiling, and laughing. Most importantly, he would make them feel like the mayor was listening to each and every single thing they had to say. I, and our entire city, are saddened at this loss. Justin was our leader and friend. He will always be missed. Steven O. Evans, PhD Publisher

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED By John M. Hayden

A

new bar, a new contest, a new community icon. The Eagle is one of the hottest, most well-known leather bar franchises in the world, and finally opened up a location on Wilton Drive. And with the addition of The Eagle comes the addition of Mr. Eagle Wilton Manors 2020. The inaugural contest went down in February 2020, and crowned Cory David as the first champion. A realtor by profession and legendary leatherman by passion, Cory has a long history of dominating competitions like Mr. Eagle. “I have run for other titles before,” Cory David told me. “I have learned something new every time. What I can say is, I was always running for the right reasons. To champion for my community, to fund raise for rights and causes. I have been championing for HIV/AIDS, education, client services and LGBTQ rights for two decades, this title will continue with that platform. I will 18 | OutClique.com

not leave anyone behind, will include anyone and listen - that's important, listen, let people be heard.” Of course the first of anything can be amazing or an amazing disaster. Cory David said the first Mr. Leather Contest was amazingly smooth. “The professionalism, quality of judges, volunteers, staff, management and so was unbelievable!” We may be a smaller city with a new bar, but he says this had the feel of the well-known competitions. “It was at the level of International Mr Leather without 80 contestants.” And the fact that this was an Eagle competition makes it all the more special. “To be part of the Eagle Family is a huge honor! Eagles are around the world, to be the inaugural Mr. Eagle Wilton Manors is history and I am honored. There is a private group of Eagle title holders and I have heard from several of them from around the world

saying, ‘Congratulations on winning Mr. Eagle Wilton Manors 2020.’” Getting ready for the competition is more than putting on gear an hour before showtime and hitting the stage. It starts days ahead of time, and Cory David told me about the week leading up to the event. “In your head, you are sideways, picking which leather to wear, writing your speech, doing homework on your judges, if you don't know them. I have been around the block and at the rodeo before, but yes, the week before is nerve wracking. I ran around Thursday and Friday asking the community businesses for gift baskets for the Friday night raffle. I received six in two days from Wilton Manors business owners and managers. We have a great community here.” And when contest day rolls around, Cory gets in the right headspace. “The day of, I am a very spiritual person and I give it up to be my genuine self. I have my higher power placing me in the place and time where I need to be. That higher power wanted me to be the inaugural Mr. Eagle WM 2020. I am truly blessed and excited. I still tear up even just at home thinking about it.” Then comes the controlled chaos of the contest. “Behind the scenes was amazing, David, Aspen and Mx T. They were helping us dress, calming us down, reminding us of leather protocol and so on! Lots of laughter, lots of hugs, high fives, tears of joy, and I had a group prayer for our brother that passed away the prior Sunday, Kurt Allen Mr. 64TEN 2018 a friend of mine from Indianapolis and his 2018 Chicago title.”

The leather community’s been a big part of his life through many years in many bars in many cities over many decades. And his new home has a prime place in his heart. “My first Leather Bar was the 501 Eagle, Indianapolis, IN and that's where I bought my first piece of leather. Open 30 years, it unfortunately closed in 2016. I have been in Eagle Bars all around the world. My Eagle WM had the universe looking over it! It's perfect. Bear Cave, Code Bar, Dance Floor, Leather Store, Entry Bar, Main Bar, they have hit the nail on the head. Everyone is welcome at The Eagle. Chuck King can tell you about all the events they are planning for everyone in our community. It's just so well run, management and staff.” And when he wins, the community wins. I have already been in conversation with my first & second runner-up in how to make a difference in our community. We will be acting as a committee within the community, here to listen and here to be heard. This means the entire Eagle Class of 2020. You will see our Class of 2020 working together to raise awareness, fundraising and always having a great time!” “The leather community is international and brothers from around the world. It's amazing! I have been attending IML in Chicago for almost 20 years, The Leather Archives and Museum is located in Chicago. It's been happening since 1979 the very first International Mr. Leather.” Congrats, Cory David. We all look forward to seeing what you do with the inaugural title.

WHAT MAKES US CLIQUE

CHEF HOWIE FOURNIER AND BOB FOURNIER

Photo by Andy Armano | www.AndyArmano.com

By Andy Armano | www.AndyArmano.com

This series focuses on individuals who give to our community and make a positive impact on the lives of others. Often it is through our personal adversities that we discover who we are and transform the challenges into strength. 28 | OutClique.com

C

hef Howie Fournier and Bob Fournier are a Wilton Manors institution. Howie is the chef at The Pub. Bob provides administrative and logistical support. They have been together for nearly 38 years and had a very successful restaurant and bar outside Boston. With a commitment to giving back to the community and their gregarious nature, they are well-known up and down the East Coast. They have traversed time and challenges as a couple and are enjoying life here in Wilton Manors. They recently took time to talk with me about their work, their lives, their families and their spirituality. Andy Armano: You guys have been together for 37 years. Tell me how you guys met. I want to know about that. Bob Fournier: It will be 38 on March 10. Well, the way we met wasn’t glamorous. I worked as assistant vault supervisor. After I got off of work every day I would wait at a gay bar, two doors down, for my bus to come. I met him there. He was 17 and I was 23. One thing led to another and we moved in together. Andy Armano: Were you open with your families? Chef Howie: Yes. My family was great. They took Bob in like family.

AA CH BF

Oh man, that's wonderful.

Bob's family did too, except his father.

Well at the time, my parents did not know I was gay. For the first six months that we lived together, my father thought we were just roommates. And one day

we were visiting for the weekend and Howie went out to the store to pick up something and I just said, "I got to tell you something. Howie is not my roommate. We're lovers." And it was just five minutes of emotion with my parents saying, "We had no idea. And you always wanted kids and a house” and all that kind of stuff. But I had to cut them off and say, “You guys have to get a grip with this because if you can't deal with it, then I can't come back here.” My mother adjusted very quickly. It took my father 12 years before he would even start talking to him.

AA BF AA

But he came around?

Yes, he did.

I’m glad to hear that. You both work together as a couple now. Has this always been the case?

CH

Well, for 13 years, we owned a gay bar and restaurant near Boston called Hobos. We named it after our namesHowie and Bob - Ho and Bo.

AA BF

What was your bar and restaurant like?

It was in North Shore, Salisbury Beach, a very small, six block radius, low budget resort, right on the ocean. We never hid who we were. At first, friends said we wouldn’t last six months being an openly gay couple, but that wasn’t true. We became friends with everyone, the business owners, local politicians, the locals, everyone.

CH

We were on the front page of the local paper for being interviewed as OutClique.com | 29

one of the first gay couples in Massachusetts to become married.

CH

When you're younger, of course it's a high. But as you get older, it levels off. You realize what life's about. I mean it's a journey. He was my first. I had never been with a guy but him.

BF

I had never had a boyfriend. He was the first one and last one. In terms of being a gay couple, especially an interracial couple, I feel like we had very few obstacles from day one right up to today.

CH

My grandfather said to me "You're going to have struggles child." Because my grandfather's gay, he knew what gay life was like, But he also knew going in, what being an interracial couple would be like for us.

BF CH AA

He left his marriage to explore.

And then came back to his family and the church.

That’s incredible that you know about his journey. If I may ask, how did your grandfather reconcile his sexuality with the church?

CH

My grandfather was always a church person. When he came back to the

AA

I love that. It's the individual trail-blazing that drives such an important part of change. You provided a venue for the community and you didn't hide behind anything and just are who you are. And you won them over. You guys have been together so long. Tell me about what that journey has been like.

church, he lived by its rules. He ended up being a Bishop for a Church of God in Christ. If you look up Church of God in Christ, it's a black church and all over the south.

CH AA CH

He talked to us about being gay, but he decided he couldn't act on it. He couldn't have sexual relationships with men while he was in the church?

Yes, he stopped. He still had gay friends, but he wasn't active. When he talked about us, he would say, ”That’s my grandson and that's my other grandson.”

AA

Yet he was openly accepting of you. That must have taken some courage for him. Did his congregation know about him?

CH

No, I don't think so. If anybody knew, it was the older elders and his sister. But they never talked about it around us.

AA

And so in terms of having your long term relationship, I'm sure people ask you this kind of cliche question, but what's the key, what's the secret?

CH BF

Tell him your story.

I bought earplugs by the case. Seriously, though, I think if you want to make it work, you have to pick and choose your battles and there's nothing wrong with letting some things slide. There's nothing wrong with compromising. If something is

really important to you, just talk it out, fight it out - whatever it takes to get through it.

CH

As you get older, you don't even have time for that. You don't, you don't. You realize stuff you argued about or stupid stuff when you're younger and you when think about it, “Was that even worth the time and energy?” It wasn't worth it. Life is just too short.

AA

You both didn’t retire since moving here. You’re both very active and working hard.

CH

We do. But we love it. I enjoy being a chef. I'm a seafood chef. I get a lot of our fresh seafood from up North to serve here. And we have a clientele that just comes here because I do serve the first season stuff.

AA

Actually I did not know that and I love fresh seafood. So now I know

that.

CH AA CH AA

All fresh. We get the lobster, the lobster roll, and whole belly clams. How did I not know that?

Because you're not on my Facebook.

Oh, I am a terrible Facebooker. I will keep up with you there. Thank you both for sitting down with me and sharing so much about yourselves.

MAKEUP WITH A CAUSE Photos Courtesy of Nicole Halliwell at www.dragretouch.com

I

n the last 24 months, the visibility of trans individuals has increased dramatically both in mainstream media, and in everyday life thanks to the tireless efforts of LGBTQ+ advocates, celebrities like Ellen, Laverne Cox, and Caitlyn Jenner, television shows like “I Am Jazz” and “Pose,” and with the long-awaited open-inclusivity by nationwide brands like Starbucks®. Growing acceptance or not, many who identify as transgendered struggle with the outside appearance that greets them in the mirror daily. One drag queen aims to change all that. Nicole Halliwell, a drag entertainer and producer in South Florida, is taking a stand to promote positive self image and confidence in trans individuals by providing an outlet to learn more about self expression through makeup. “So many of my trans friends have been welcomed with open arms into the drag community over the last decade. The inclusiveness of this environment allows them a place to grow and find themselves through self expression. The entire experience brings many out of their shell, encouraging positive self image by bringing it to reality. “With that idea in mind, I have launched the ‘Transitions’ makeup workshop, a safe environment where trans women and men can come to openly learn and explore makeup at their own pace, have a safe and stress

free shopping experience where they can ask questions without limits, and feel more comfortable in whatever form or appearance they choose to express themselves in daily.” Halliwell has taken the concept of learning from the community and built it into a twohour hands-on workshop funded solely by donations, and partnered with local beauty chains and classrooms to foster the ideal environment for this project. “Too many of my trans sisters are afraid to step foot into a makeup store to learn or ask questions. It often becomes limited to online shopping and YouTube tutorials, and that’s just not enough. It’s exciting to work with these local retailers who are eager to learn inclusivity and meet members of our community face-to-face. The entire project helps to connect cisgender/ straight and trans communities together, so their stories can be heard. Everyone at every age is welcome - no matter what you identify as, you belong here.” Debuting at Miami Beach Pride in 2019 with the help of community sponsors, and launching in Fort Lauderdale this year in 2020, Transitions Florida is partnering with big-box cosmetics retailers to provide classroom spaces, and local community outreach. Always looking for sponsors to help reduce out of pocket cost for attendees, Transitions Florida needs your help to keep classes affordable and available for everyone.

You can learn more about Transitions Florida, make a donation to the cause, and schedule classes online at www.TransitionsFLA.com, launching in April 2020. Catch Nicole and her Transitions Florida team this March on “I am Jazz” on TLC®. You can learn more about Ms. Halliwell at www.NicoleHalliwell.com. OutClique.com | 53

FOREVER YOUNG

An Interview with Grammy Award winner Tracy Young By Gregg Shapiro 58 | OutClique.com

I

f you’ve been dancing in a club any time in the last 20 or so years, chances are very good that you’ve hit the crowded dancefloor to a remix by Grammy Award-winning lesbian DJ and producer Tracy Young. The midAtlantic native and Miami resident has left her distinctive mark on songs by Pet Shop Boys, Cyndi Lauper. P!nk, Shakira, Lady Gaga, Gloria Estefan, Cher, Beyoncé, Demi Lovato, Stevie Nicks, Katy Perry, Chaka Khan, Christina Aguilera, and most significantly, Madonna. In fact, it was a Madonna tune, “I Rise” from 2019’s Madame X, that earned Young her Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical Grammy Award in January 2020, making her the first female producer to ever win the category. Busier than ever, Young was gracious enough to answer a few questions shortly after the Grammys. Gregg Shapiro: Tracy, I’d like to begin by congratulating you on your January 2020 Grammy Award win for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical. What does being the recipient of such an award mean to you? Tracy Young: Thank you so much, Gregg! I am still on a cloud from last Sunday’s historical Grammy win. I was just starting to feel comfortable with being nominated after 25-years in the business…and then I won!! It means everything to me.

GS

Please say something about the significance of being the first woman to win the Grammy Award for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical.

TY

Despite being eligible in previous years, the Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical category was just introduced to the Recording Academy in 1998 and it’s taken this long for a woman to be nominated. Now

in 2020, both the industry and my peers are starting to see the hard work that goes into this business regardless of gender. My hope is that my Grammy win will create a dialogue and platform in the industry to recognize more female producers who have been overlooked for so long.

GS TY GS

Do you have a special place picked out to display your Grammy Award? I do but it’s top secret and only my dog Lucca knows [laughs].

Did you hear from Madonna, whose song “I Rise” was the one you remixed, after you won?

TY

Well, of course I texted Madonna, because she’s been somebody that I’ve not only aspired to be like as far as being an artist – she’s always pushing the envelope and growing and learning. She texted back right away saying, “Congratulations!” with a bunch of emojis. She’s happy. She’s super proud. She’s been an amazing support and has given me a lot of opportunities over many years.

GS

I first interviewed you in 2000. The title of the piece was “If Madonna Calls. . ..” Here we are 20 years later and you still have a significant working relationship with Madonna. What makes it such a longlasting creative partnership?

TY

Trust is paramount whenever you are collaborating and that is the one thing that Madonna has always given me. She trusts the creative process and is very instrumental in guiding me forward. Our “I Rise" collaboration marks a high point in our long working relationship and I couldn’t be prouder to share this award with Madonna. OutClique.com | 59

GS

From the very early days of disco to the present day, dance music has been a central component of LGBTQ+ culture. As an out person, can you please say something about how you see your place in LGBTQ+ history?

TY

Beyond the music that I’ve either produced or created, I hope to be remembered for my philanthropic support and fundraising efforts that give back to various LGBTQ+ charities such as GLAAD, GMHC, Elton John AIDS Foundation, The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, The Trevor Project, It Gets Better, Diversity Honors and amfAR.

GS

I don’t like to discuss politics, but I did remix the campaign song for Hillary Clinton's run for the Presidency of the United States of America in 2016. The song titled "Stronger Together" features recording artist Jessica Sanchez. I also had the opportunity to play at Hillary’s fundraising rallies in Washington, DC.

GS

You are known for being incredibly busy with DJ and remix projects. Are there any on which you are currently working that you are particularly excited about and want to share with the readers?

TY

My focus is always music first, whether it’s original productions for my own label Ferosh Records or expanding my discography with fresh remixes for other artists and labels. I am currently in development with a fun new project but will not reveal any details until the time is right.

With the 2020 election front and center on everyone’s minds, if you are asked to spin at a candidate’s fundraiser or, ultimately a candidate’s victory celebration, is that something you would do or do you prefer to stay out of politics?

P

FILE NOW FOR THE 2020 SENIOR EXEMPTION

roperty owners who are 65+ years may qualify for an additional exemption on their Homesteaded property. This additional exemption, which applies only to the county’s portion of the taxes and city taxes for residents of cities that have adopted this exemption, saves the average Broward senior nearly $300 each year in taxes. To qualify for this valuable taxsaving exemption, an applicant must be 65 or older as of January 1, 2020 AND have a combined HOUSEHOLD adjusted gross income for 2019 not exceeding $30,721. If you believe you qualify for this exemption, please click on this link for steps to ensure proper filing: www.BCPA.net/Senior_Instructions.asp. Residents who received the Additional Senior Exemption in 2019 will receive a renewal card in the mail. If you still meet the income requirement, simply sign the renewal card and return it to our office by May 1 so we can ensure you receive this exemption for 2020. Rest assured there is no personal information listed on the renewal postcard. 2020 Homestead Exemption/Save Our Homes Cap Set by the State

The Florida Department of Revenue has set the 2020 Save Our Homes cap at 2.3%. This cap limits increases to the Assessed/Save Our Homes Value for properties receiving Homestead Exemption to no more than 3% per year or the increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) regardless of increases to the just value of

the property. This cap results in considerable savings over time for properties with Homestead Exemption. It is important to remember this is not a cap on the actual taxes, but rather a cap on the assessed value of the property. Important: The Save Our Homes cap begins the year after you receive Homestead Exemption and automatically renews each year. This cap does not cover new construction or construction that was not taxed before the "Save Our Homes" limit applied to a particular property. Many owners will face a significant increase in property taxes when they purchase a property as the previous owners’ exemptions will be removed and the Save Our Homes (SOH) value reset. Florida law requires the SOH value be brought up to the just value of the property when Homestead Exemption is added or removed from the property. For this reason, our office offers a New Homebuyer’s Tax Estimator on our website at www.BCPA.net. This estimator allows prospective buyers the ability to plan ahead when purchasing a new home. The absolute filing deadline for any 2020 exemption is September 18, 2020. If my office can ever be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at (954) 357-6904 or by email at MartyKiar@BCPA.net. Take care, Marty Kiar

MAKING THE PRICE RIGHT! By Kip Reynolds

I

n January, I had the opportunity to list a condo unit and in less than 48 hours the seller entered into an acceptable contract. The formula for such success is fairly straightforward. In this case, the seller was willing to replace carpeting and other finishing touches, but the key was pricing it right. With this in mind, I was inspired to share some commonly accepted pricing myths. "I'm willing to wait long enough and hold out for a good offer. It will come!" I can't

tell you how often I've heard this from sellers. The opposite of this statement is actually true. The longer your property stays on the market the worse the offers get or none at all. As a property sits, buyers start to wonder what's wrong with it. Why has it taken so long to sell? Buyers spend months looking through listings and they can see yours the entire time. Your goal is 30 days or less for the best possible result, but 48 hours isn't so bad either.

"We got that offer so fast! We must have priced it too low." This is 100% false and

one of the more common pricing myths among sellers. The instant your home is listed hundreds or even thousands of shoppers could skim by your listing as they filter through all the possibilities. Priced right and it's likely many will be interested immediately. Obviously you don't want to price your home lower than it is worth, but you do want to price it low

enough to get buyers excited. "My agent came by and took pictures with their new iPhone! Looks great!" Drop

the mic and leave the room. A stunningly terrible and complete disservice to any seller. Marketing is the lifeblood of real estate. Professional photography is the linchpin of real estate sales. Light, composition, staging, and even weather all align with the right professional photographer to bring you the tools necessary to attract buyers and achieve the price it deserves.

"We need to price our home with more room to negotiate." Another central tool of

the realtor toolbox is negotiation and there's no denying it. A good agent knows how to strike a balance between room for negotiation and good pricing. Pricing a home excessively high is not necessary to create an opportunity for middle ground. I hope this letter has been some help and you have learned a bit because pricing real estate properly is both a skill and an art. Price is the most important consideration for getting a home sold. If you get the price wrong nothing else you or your agent does will matter. In fact, setting the right price is 75% of the marketing of your home. The correct price will attract the right buyers, so when you're ready give your trusted realtor a call and let's get from FOR SALE to SOLD!

I’LL DRINK TO THAT

By John M. Hayden

T

he bar is packed. You push your way through to order a couple of beers, and then . . . you wait. The harried bartender can’t find his opener, spots it at the end of the bar, and takes off. Meanwhile you sit there thirsty as the guy you’re buying a drink for starts to cruise the guys around him. It happens. A lot. 92 | OutClique.com

Now one local bartender with a creative flair is saving time and making money with an invention that gets drinks from behind the bar and into your mouth faster than ever. "It was actually created by bartenders for bartenders,” Chris Lodge says. He’s the GM at The Pub on Wilton Drive, and the inventor of Axel Band. “We

were bartending behind the bar. It was a really long bar and most times people forget their bottle opener. So they either borrow yours or put it underneath a sweat band or put it in their pocket. Either way, not very efficient." His solution was to attach it to his body. "So what we did was put magnets on a sweatband, just so it would hold it.” But you can’t walk around with a magnet taped to your arm, Axel Band needed some style. “Then we made it look a little better just so we could look good wearing it. And then people started coming up and saying, ‘Oh, where'd you get that from?'" The stylish, magnetic armband was just the beginning. From there he added a place to hold a specially designed pen that comes with a flashlight. Chris says it’s ergonomically engineered with the highest quality Neoprene fabrics meaning maximum comfort while being worn during busy bar hours. And it’s sweatresistant when people are working up a sweat. Style, simplicity, and utility all in one. Once it caught on locally it was time to take this show on the road. "We actually ended up getting it patented and it's been pretty awesome.” They took the Axel Band to the massive and influential Bar Industry Tradeshow in Las Vegas and were one of the five most popular booths. Chris says

it’s catching on because it’s something everyone in the service industry can appreciate. "Something created by us to make us faster behind the bar. Increases speed of service, efficiency. Makes more tips for you, makes the customers wait less." Nevada, which has a huge restaurant and club sector, is improving its health regulations to prevent hands from touching things like fruit and other accessories. So keeping bottle openers from rubbing up against sweaty bodies or being stored in well worn jeans is going to be the standard, and creates a huge opening for Chris and his Axel Band. And the future is bright for his product. Axel Band is going to be featured on an episode of season seven of Bar Rescue on Paramount Network. Chris and his partners have also developed a belt clip version of the product. A lot of places have uniforms that don’t lend themselves to employees wearing armbands. Chris hopes to send the clip into mass production soon. Chris is very proud of the product and uses it himself when he’s behind the bar at The Pub. "When I wear it behind the bar it becomes an extension of me. It's comfortable to wear, ergonomic, and sweat resistant. It feels like you're almost not wearing it."

Axel Band sells for about $35(US). Check it out on their website, www.axbgear.com/armband/armband OutClique.com | 93

ON GRIEF AND GRIEVING By Fr. Richard J Vitale

F

ew things happen within a community that are more impactful than losing a prominent member. I think this is especially true for the LGBTQ+ community where many of us take each other on as “Chosen Family,” and so I wanted to share a few thoughts on grief and grieving. After having led many different groups in funeral worship, I’ve had a few insights that I think could be beneficial when going through these difficult times. They’re just my opinions, and I know they are not fully comprehensive, so please think of them more as a conversation starter than a complete work. First and foremost, grieve however you feel called to grieve. Our minds and bodies respond to each loss in as many unique ways as our relationships form. If you want to scream at the ocean, or withdraw for a while, if you want to dance and clack a fan, or punch a pillow, if you want write a long journal entry or FB Post, or just sit numb for a bit, do it. Get it out. It is okay. You are okay. Just make sure

that your grieving stays in the zone of what is healthy, and that you are respectful of the chief mourners. Never ever hesitate to talk to someone, a trusted friend, a family member, a therapist, or a religious leader to help you cope, especially if you are struggling. Similarly, do not judge the way others mourn, they have every right to feel the loss in their own way. Never ever go down the “they seem too happy, why are they smiling and cheerful at the memorial?” Or the “they’re being over the top, they weren’t that close” roads. These are dangerous and unhelpful pathways. It is impossible for us to know what one person meant to another, or perhaps the passing reminds someone of another loss and the two become tied together in their mind. I know that personally, I usually don’t feel the emotional pangs of loss until about a month after, often the first time I instinctively go to reach out to them as though they were still physically here among us, and remember that they are not. OutClique.com | 107

More importantly, never pass judgment on the deceased. Our society somehow established a hierarchy of acceptable deaths, judging people both on length of life as well as the means of passing. I believe we can easily do without both. In the grand arc of human existence, whether you live to be 100 or 30, we still occupy about the same infinitesimal amount of time, and whether you pass by heart attack or overdose or cancer or suicide, they are all just the succumbing to a fatal disease. I prefer to focus on the quality of the years lived, not the quantity or the death itself. No matter the instance, our job is singular, to respond with love. If however, you see something in their passing that inspires you to improve your own self, quietly do so. If you find that it’s time to seek the help of a therapist, to enter into rehabilitation, to get in better shape, get a cancer screening, or take care of a heart problem you know has been lurking, you should certainly do so. But again, quietly. Pray for the departed, even if you do not believe in a higher power, take a few minutes of quiet reflection and meditation. Countless studies have shown that taking time for prayer and meditation lowers our heart rate and normalizes blood pressure, reduces anxiety and depression, regulates our breathing, and restores mental harmony. It is a wonderful way to call their essence into our own and to reset our minds. Pray for their families and loved ones as well, giving a place front of mind to them will inevitably lead you to be of help. Remember to take care of the chief mourners, especially when the loss is unexpected. They could be struggling and in need of help, but may be too proud or timid to ask for it. My favorite things to do are those that help with their responsibilities, cook or cater a meal for them, help clean their home or send over a

cleaning service, wash their cars or take their cars to be washed. Little things that ease their burdens. But remember, when interacting with the chief mourners, if you know things about the deceased that they do not, this is not the time to reveal them like Jessica Fletcher at the end of an episode of “Murder She Wrote” (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, I’m cutting a corner off your gay card). Respect the wishes of the departed as best you can. Losing a loved one always reminds me that life is fleeting, so I often take opportunities such as these to innumerate the things that I do not want left undone when I leave this earth and make progress towards them. Make the career change, save for the house, repair or start the relationship, have the child, go back to school and earn the degree, talk to your parents, go on the trip. Whatever it might be for you, do it! Perhaps most importantly, our one responsibility is to let the spirit of the ones we lost live on in us. Bear their legacy, do not let their life have been in vain. Take the best from them and add it to the best in you. Be kind to one another, band together and be strong. And Lastly, if the grief seems too much to bear, try to change your thinking from feelings of loss to feelings of gratitude. Rather than focus on what will not be, appreciate what you had, their impact on and gifts to you. Be thankful to them, and for them. It is hard to feel sadness, while giving thanks. I hope this has been helpful in some way, and I thank you for taking the time to read it. Please know that you are loved and cared for and prayed for always. At your service, Fr. Rich

WALK THE WALK

FLORIDA AIDS WALKS COMES MARCH 21, 2020 By John M. Hayden

W

alk the walk. Talk the talk. Raise the funds. The 2020 Florida AIDS Walk & Music Festival goes down March 21, 2020 on Fort Lauderdale Beach, and the 5k walkathon is set to be a good cause and a great party. Lil’ Kim is set to headline the after party, and with a catalog of hits that stretches back more than 25 years, she’s ready to rock several generations of fans. But first comes the hard work. It’s a lot more than showing up on the first weekend of Spring for a walk along the beach. “We are finding it more difficult to keep awareness out there,” Imara Canady of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) told me. “Especially in the age of technology, people are oversaturated with so much information. How do we continue to be innovative in a way that connects and meets them where they are 114 | OutClique.com

at?” He’s right. The AIDS/HIV crisis has long since been pushed off the front page of public consciousness. But that doesn’t mean it has gone away, especially in South Florida. Broward and Miami-Dade counties have some of the highest new infection rates in the country. “We’re focused on the mission to heighten the awareness and communication in the South Florida community.” That means coming up with many messages for the many different communities affected. From African-American, trans, latino, to youth, AHF knows one size no longer fits all. So they find groups doing targeted outreach to get the maximum bang for your hard raised buck. “More creative cutting edge ways of reaching people. Not just during the AIDS Walk, but throughout the year.” So now we walk again. Teams and individuals have spent months raising money and

recruiting sponsors for the cause. The fight goes on on several fronts, and Imara says the money brought in this month will be spread around. “This raises money for ten deserving organizations, in the trenches, doing this work every day.” The AIDS crisis is now in its fifth decade. And while the challenges have changed, so have the methods of combating it. AHF is using digital and text messaging to reach people, bringing it front and center as soon as people look at their phones. It comes down to grabbing people’s attention any way they can. And in the spirit of technology, the Florida AIDS Walk & Music Festival have the Virtual Walker. If you can’t be at the event in person, you can be there virtually. The program lets you be

an active participant by raising funds for the cause, and be an active participant who can call on their personal networks. More than a million people in America alone are living with HIV, and 100,000 of them are here in Florida. Making things worse, 15 percent have no idea they are infected. Clearly a lot of work is left to be done, and Florida is ground zero. The other half of the AIDS Walk is the Music Festival, and Lil’ Kim won’t be the only star in the spotlight. Before the walk steps off the Deep Fried Funk Band will get walkers revved up, and before Lil’ Kim comes on, Casper Magico will take the stage. Check him out online if you don’t know him, he’s worth a listen.

Registration continues up until the walk kicks off on the Mar 21, 2020. For more information and details on how to get involved, check out their website www.FloridaAIDSWalk.org. OutClique.com | 115

10 SIMPLE STEPS TO FOOT CARE FOR DIABETICS

I

f you are a diabetic, you need to “stay on your toes” when it comes to foot care. Diabetes can cause both nerve damage and hardening of the blood vessels in your feet. Lack of feeling in your feet makes it difficult to tell if you have a sore or blister. If left untreated, small sores may turn into serious infections that can spread to the entire leg or even the whole body. But by following some tips on how to care for your feet, you may be able to avoid serious complications. Preventing foot problems begins with controlling diabetes by managing your blood sugar levels. Follow your doctor’s recommendations for diet, exercise and medicine, and be proactive in taking care of your feet. Here are a few tips:

1. Watch for signs of foot problems. Check your

feet every day for blisters, sores or cuts, ingrown toenails, thickening of the toenails, and fungus infections between the toes. If you have difficulty seeing the bottom of your feet, use a plastic mirror or ask a caregiver for help.

5. Do not go barefoot. Always wear socks and shoes to prevent potential foot injuries.

6. Wear comfortable socks and shoes. Avoid open-toe, open-heel, pointy-toed and high heel shoes, as well as sandals with thongs between the toes. Always wear socks or stockings with shoes.

7. Do not treat calluses, corns, or bunions before

checking with your doctor. Razor blades, corn plasters, and liquid corn or callus removers can damage your skin.

8. Protect your feet from extreme temperatures.

Wear shoes on hot surfaces and apply sunscreen to the tops of your feet. Wear socks at night if your feet get cold. Check your feet to avoid frostbite in cold weather.

9. Keep the blood flowing to your feet. When

possible, prop your feet up when sitting. Exercise, such as walking, can improve circulation in your feet. Be sure to wear appropriate, comfortable shoes.

2. Wash your feet every day. Pat your feet dry 10. Have a foot check-up at least once a year. Ask after washing gently in warm water. Do not soak your feet; that can dry out your skin. Be sure to dry between your toes and keep the skin dry with cornstarch or talcum powder.

SERVING MY COMMUNITY WITH PRIDE

EDGAR REYES, BEGINNING A PAGEANT JOURNEY TO MR. GAY WORLD 2020 Photos by Keans Llamera | www.KeansLlamera.com

I

was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, to a strong Catholic family of Mexican descent. Going to Sunday mass was a religious practice for me growing up, which was encouraged by my devoted grandmother. Throughout my childhood years I was an altar boy, a reader, a catechist, and a choir director gaining the respect and acknowledgement of my community. At a young age I was blessed with having a community that loved me for who I was and what I did. I took pride in serving and used my privilege and authority to make a change when needed. I like to say that I never came out because my father always knew I was different and always asked how I felt. On the other hand, my mother was always in denial and it took years of arguing against her beliefs to get her to accept me at the age of 19.

I never gave up and fought for my acceptance. I always knew that it was ok to be a gay Catholic and some people are just brainwashed to think God is hateful. My passion for activism began in 2008 with the battle of Proposition 8 which stated that same sex unions would be invalid throughout the state. The night before voting, our prayer group gathered as usual and one of the main topics was same sex marriage. The leaders of that group reminded everyone to vote for Prop 8 stating that marriage is between a man and a woman, and the bible says so. I so happen to arrive towards the end of this and sat in the back listening to this nonsense which ignited a rage in me. I got up at the end while they were making their announcements and pretended to have an announcement. My heart poured out as I directed my thoughts to the followers, which were mostly women. I reminded them that they were mothers first and to think of their children, to love them and to share that same love with the world and accept people for who they love. To my surprise, that was my proudest moment because everyone cheered 130 | OutClique.com

for me and I felt humbled and grateful to have spoken on behalf of the LGBT community at the age of 16. I was always labeled as different and, as many gays, faced bullying at a very young age throughout elementary and middle school. My prayers were answered when I began high school in a more diverse neighboring city. I was able to be out and proud and meet more people like me while not facing any bullying from anyone. I became GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) president in 11th grade and attended the annual conference “Models of Excellence for LGBT teens at Occidental College. This helped empower us with workshops and gave us resources to use in our everyday lives. I was fortunate to meet other teens who faced bullying and found it rewarding to be able to share my story with them and assure them that life will only get better. I also attended my first Pride during that year which gave me hope and introduced me to an open, friendly world. After high school, I volunteered as a production

assistant for Pride for four years. I began as a host for Teen Pride and quickly found that volunteering was my passion. At age 23, three years ago, I decided to move to Fort Lauderdale and join Pride Fort Lauderdale as the Events Coordinator. I found a family here and am grateful to have found a city that embraces community activism while being the leading “Mecca” for LGBT tourism. I have helped in managing top pride kick offs and have worked together with the most influential city leaders in our community. I find myself being empowered every day with great people who inspire everyone to give more and sacrifice for the greater good of our existence.

will proudly represent my country and, most definitely, will transmit the love and activism that we here in Wilton Manors showcase in our everyday lives. Please join me and support me with your votes and be assured that I will continue to fight for my community and make all of you proud spreading Pride all over the world.

Currently, I am a student at Broward College hoping to graduate in Hospitality, specializing in event management. I give myself time to be a part of local organizations who look out for our family members who are in most need such as The Smart Ride, which helps raise funds that go towards local agencies that help people living with AIDS/HIV. The next step I've chosen to take in my life is participating in the Mr. Gay World pageant. I have been chosen to represent my parents’ home state of Oaxaca at the national competition of Mr. Gay World Mexico 2021 taking place June 19-21, 2020, in the state of Yucatán. After my participation in the Mr. Gay World USA national competition last month, I am prepared to use this experience to win the Mexican title and represent my parents' home country at the international pageant in 2021. I’ve based my decision to participate because this pageant represents what I have done all my life which is to fight for equality and use my voice to spread love globally. I want to become an ambassador of hope all around the globe and bring love to the youth and help our LGBTQ+ individuals who are facing persecutions in environments that are not gay welcoming. I Follow me at www.Facebook.com/Joshua.Reyes93, displayed Edgar J Reyes, and follow my journey in this pageant experience. OutClique.com | 131

A NIGHT AT THE KRAVIS WITH

Alexis Michelle By Denny Patterson

136 | OutClique.com

R

eminiscent of a spectacular Las Vegas variety show, audiences are invited to the Kravis Center’s Alexander W. Dreyfoos Concert Hall on April 11, 2020 for an evening of laugh out loud comedy and remarkable music all in one. “What Happens In Palm Beach…A Celebration of Music, Comedy, and the Iconic Las Vegas” is a star-studded experience featuring legendary entertainers like Clint Holmes, Tony Orlando, Rita Rudner, Sarge, and Alexis Michelle. Best known for competing on the ninth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Alexis is a theatrical gal from New York City who is excited to make her way back to south Florida. She was able to step away from her busy schedule for a couple minutes to answer some questions with OutClique.

things happen for a reason. If it had not been part of my path, I don’t think it would have happened for me and I might have given up. I was about ready to give up before that eighth audition, trust me.

DP

Now that you have been on the show, how has it changed your life and what more do you hope to accomplish with your platform?

AM

DP

It changed my life incredibly. It has had me traveling all over the world performing for people, which as I said, is the greatest joy. What I didn’t anticipate was how just by living my life truthfully, openly, and expressing myself the way that I do, I didn’t anticipate how that was going to touch so many people, especially a lot of young people. I get told a lot that just by continuing to do what I do, it inspires people, and that has been a very humbling experience that I am grateful for. The biggest change, if you can say just one thing about the experiences, it has allowed me to be a performer full-time. As someone who went on the show in my 30s, I spent lots of time as a performer working multiple jobs as performers often have to do. So, the fact that I have been able to make my career and livelihood solely from performing has been a tremendous gift that I will always be grateful for.

AM

DP AM

Denny Patterson: Hi, Alexis! Thank you so much for chatting with me today. Tell us, what can audiences expect from this upcoming show at the Kravis Center? Alexis Michelle: I think you can expect a little bit of everything. My dear friend and maestro, Luke Frazier, is putting together an exciting mix of talent and entertainment that I think will give audiences a thrill. There’s going to be a little bit of everything. You are best known for competing on the ninth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. I had no idea that you auditioned eight times before finally being selected. Why were you so determined to be on the show? First of all, my drag was something that I love very much, but I was a little bit afraid of. I was also pursuing, kind of, a legit theatre career, and I was afraid that being known as a drag queen would pigeonhole me in terms of casting. So, I had been kind of secretive about my drag and it honestly was watching the first season of Drag Race. That made me go, “You know what, there is more that I can do with it and I want to do it that way. I can do that, and I want to do that,” and it became this goal that I set for myself. I honestly felt like it was part of my destiny, and I suppose that it was because I do believe that

Is there anything you would have done differently?

Oh, I would have done so many things differently! [Laughs]. I think that part of the challenge of Drag Race is it’s a very internal kind of experience, and that’s on purpose. Part of the challenge of the show and succeeding in the competition is being able to push through that when you are taken out of your own comfort zone. So, there’s lots that I look back on. Even right after I did it, I was like, “Oh, I should have played that a little differently, or I should have worn that dress.” It is so much easier to see those things after they happen. So, yes, there are lots of things I would do differently. OutClique.com | 137

DP way?

Do you think how you were portrayed or edited impacted your career in any

AM

I think that the challenge in reality television is that there’s so much footage filmed. As with many forms of entertainment, but I think with reality, because it’s unscripted, you film so much more than what actually hits the air. I think that sometimes if personality gets a little bit skewed, I think that it’s just a matter of context. So, I will be honest, there were times when I didn’t feel like my true self was being represented, and it’s hard to say the impact that it had. I know what impact it had on me personally, but I have done my best to just press on in my career and continue to show up and show people my art and passion and who I am. That served me pretty well over the past few years.

DP

I would like to ask you about the reading challenge. A lot of people came for you because of the way you reacted to Farrah Moan’s read about your weight. Is there more to the story than what we saw?

AM

138 | OutClique.com

As I have opened up quite recently on my Instagram, my weight has been something I have struggled with for most of my life and felt uncomfortable about for a lot of my life. This is a good example of context, sometimes things can be lost when they are out of context. I was particularly sensitive in that moment because we had a very open, intimate conversation about eating disorders and body dysmorphia and body image. You saw some of that discussion on the show, particularly for the girls who were talking about anorexia and bulimia and that side of the spectrum of eating disorders. What you did not see was my side of the spectrum. You didn’t see it at all. So, all of a sudden, when this moment of sensitivity popped up for me out of context, it did not sit well with people because it looked like I could dish out insults, but couldn’t take them. It really was the context. Now, it’s a journey to self-love, acceptance, and self-care, and that is the journey that I am on. I am feeling great right now.

DP

I saw the Instagram post you are talking about, and you look great! Losing thirty pounds is quite an accomplishment. What are you doing to lose the weight?

AM

Thank you so much. For the past year, I have been working out very seriously with the help of some trainers. Being active feels fantastic, but it took some serious focus to pay attention to what I eat. The funny thing about food is that it can be abused like other substances, but it is also what keeps us alive. It’s a pleasure to be enjoyed. So, it has been about sort of reprogramming my relationship with food, and I have had great success and

happiness by way of Haylie Pomroy’s fast metabolism diet.

DP

In addition to drag, as you mentioned, you are a trained actor and singer. Have you performed on Broadway before?

AM

I have not been on Broadway yet, but that is a dream that is very much alive within me that I expect to fulfill in my life. Even though my focus turned toward drag, my theatrical dreams are alive and well.

DP AM

Do you have any dream roles?

Oh, so many! Of course, the best answer is that I would love to take on an original part that I could make my own. But, I am a musical loving queen, so there are plenty of revivals I would love to star in.

DP

You also appeared on TLC’s Drag Me Down the Aisle alongside Bebe Zahara Benet, Jujubee, and Thorgy Thor. Can we expect any more episodes of that?

AM DP

I would say, stay tuned for more!

What’s next for you? Any other upcoming projects we should be on the lookout for?

AM

Yes, definitely. Keep your eyes out for my upcoming cabaret schedule including April 24 and May 7 at Feinstein’s/54 Below in New York City, as well as upcoming appearances at Club Cumming, also in New York City. And again, keep your eyes out for me, Jujubee, Thorgy Thor, and Bebe Zahara Benet in 2020. It’s going to be a great year!

IN MEMORY OF TERRY DECARLO

By John Hayden

A

light has gone out in our community. A light that didn't just shine from the middle of the pack, it lit the way for others to follow. A light that showed up in the darkest hour. Terry DeCarlo has passed away after battling neck and face cancer. Even if you didn't know him personally, even if you've never seen his name before now, there is a very good chance Terry touched your life. Among his services to our community, he served as Director of Marketing, Public Relations, and Events at Broward House for several years. He also worked as executive director of The Center, and LGBT+ education and advocacy nonprofit in Orlando. And it was in Orlando where his light would shine brightest in our community's darkest hour. In the hours after the massacre at PULSE Nightclub, Terry was on scene, trying to make sense of the senseless, and comfort devastated family members that rushed to the scene. In an interview with NPR, Terry said

many of them arrived without even a change of clothes. He said he personally took one grieving mom to the mall so she could get clothes, and then returned to help her pick out a suit for her child's burial. Terry never thought twice about voluntarily immersing himself into a tragedy. State Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith (D-Orlando) remembered DeCarlo during an interview on NPR. "Terry's impact on the lives of so many people in Orlando is hard to overstate. I didn't just see sadness. I saw genuine pain. They saw Terry DeCarlo as someone who helped them through the most difficult time in their lives. And they're forever grateful, as I am." He's survived by his husband, Bill Huelsman. Bill posted on Facebook, "It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to post this. But I need to let everyone know that I lost the love of my life last night. The cancer was just too aggressive for treatment."

A GoFundMe page has been created in his memory www.GoFundMe.com/F/Terry-DeCarlo. 140 | OutClique.com

THE PRIME OF LIFE By John M. Hayden

W

ine. Cheese. Cher’s career. They all get better with age. The same can be said for the men of Wilton Manors. Fort Lauderdale Primetime Gentlemen is a social group for mature men, as well as people who like hanging around them. To say they look at age as just a number would be an understatement. Some are retired and chill. Others retired but always on the move. Some work constantly. This is far from a one-size-fits-all club. What they share, besides an experienced view of life, is a love of community. Prime Gentlemen involve themselves in their community with volunteerism, politics, gay issues, arts, sports, entertainment, and every other facet of healthy living. They proudly say that their goal is to “enjoy the opportunities and friendships that develop with other Prime Gentlemen throughout the world.” The group has been around since 2003 and was first known as Fort Lauderdale

Prime Timers. The Gentlemen meet the first Sunday of the month at the Pride Center at Equality Park on North Dixie Highway. They celebrate birthdays, deal with any group business then eat. Let’s face it, no matter what stage of life you’re in, good food makes for good friends. The rest of the month is pretty packed. They meet for drinks at Matty’s, tennis at Brummer Park, or bowling in Margate. Some nights are movie nights while other evenings are just a meet up for dinner. You reach a stage in life where you realize your time is too valuable and decide to only spend it with people you like doing things that interest you. That’s the genius of Primetime Gentlemen. They do a little bit of everything. Members can go to some or all of the events. Membership is $31.50 a year, $62.25 for couples, a bit more if you want the newsletter mailed to you.

DIVAS NOW! By John M. Hayden

G

et ready for a little history, Diva Style! Icons are coming to life thanks to the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus presentation Divas Through the Ages. A lady never tells her age, but these figures are timeless. Think modern like Lady Gaga and Madonna. Historic like Judy and Liza. Timeless like Bette Midler and Tina Turner. Under the direction of Dr. Gary Keating, we’re about to be treated to a retrospective of songs we know that were historically performed by the divas we think we know. “Divas Thru the Ages is the concert title,” Gary told me. “Lots of choruses, especially gay choruses, focus on the modern divas, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Barbra Streisand, Cher and Bette etc. I have a real need to share with them that many of the hits from these divas are remakes of classics from earlier divas and that there are some ‘male’ divas as well.” Male divas? Yep. While not wanting to reveal too much, Gary says we should think in terms of Sir Elton John all the way back to the Chairman of the Board, Mr. Frank Sinatra. Choosing the music for this show was a lot harder than just checking out a few drag shows on The Drive and seeing which songs and characters got the biggest applause. “Lots of research by me (Gary), our Artistic Committee and members go into the creation. Barbra made Fanny Brice hits big again, Bette brought back Sophie Tucker. Our audiences are very diverse in age, ethnicity and religious backgrounds as well as gay and straight.” Dr. Keating says the music selections will be fun and touching, taking the audience through a range of emotions. “There needs to be something for all of them along with a laugh and a tear to make the experience complete, and that means both our audience and the members. It can never be just about one or the other.”

The great selling point about a show that takes the audience “through the ages” is that it will reach everyone. Nostalgia and a history lesson for some, a touch of modern divas for others. Gary believes the key to exposing everyone to as broad a diva experience as possible. “Our Artistic Committee has been instrumental in making our programs unique and relevant to our audiences. We do what I refer to as Choral Theater.” He says that means a “dialogue” has been written to give the show direction, and adds a personal touch to the show. “I remember the first time I heard Sophie Tucker belt out Some of These Days and remembered it when Bette Midler used it in her touring show. It brought back such wonderful memories. These are the kinds of things the men share and it makes the concert very personal. But it takes lots of research, time, and commitment from the whole chorus.” All the men will be on stage, but he says we should keep a lookout for some fun on the side. “When the lights come up you will always see the entire chorus on stage even if a little schtick is happening, because they all have someone who came to see them and both on and off stage, and that connection needs to happen.” When it’s all said and done, the show promises performances of diva hits over the last 100 years from greats like Judy Garland, Whitney Houston, Bette Midler, Tina Turner, Liza Minnelli, Diana Ross, Idina Menzel, Patti LaBelle, Gloria Gaynor, and more. And Gary left me with a promise, “After that, sit tight! It will be a great ride!” The concert goes down Saturday, March 7, 2020, but you don’t have to go somewhere over the rainbow to attend. It’s happening at the All Saints Episcopal Church in Fort Lauderdale.

AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH PAUL REUBENS Get Ready to Laugh By Mike Jeknavorian

T

here never was anyone quite like Paul Reubens, and the world will probably never see anyone like him again. From his roots in Sarasota, to the creation of his own clown-like character, Pee-wee Herman, in the 1970s in Los Angeles, and then to a string of films, TV series and appearances, Reubens has rarely been out of the spotlight. But at age 67, he’s still going strong, including hosting a 35th Anniversary Tour of Peewee’s Big Adventure and developing a new and dark Pee-wee movie. MIKE JEKNAVORIAN: Mr. Reubens, thank you for talking with OutClique magazine. To begin, you’re working on a new Peewee movie, which has a decidedly darker tone than the previous incantations of that character. Eventually, someone other than you will play Pee-wee. Have you ever seen anyone do the Pee-wee character yet other than yourself? PAUL REUBENS: No one else will ever play Pee-wee. That would happen over my dead b . . . oh, I see your point. Actually, it's 2020 now. The technology exists for me to be computer generated and look completely real. However, if I didn’t have the budget, I’ve always liked the work of Christopher Walken.

MJ

Other than the new Pee-wee movie, do you have a dream role? For example, would you like to do more dramatic work?

154 | OutClique.com

PR

Funny you should ask that question. I’m in early talks to star in the remake of Silence of the Lambs. Other than that, my dream role would be to star as the monster in Frankenstein.

MJ

I heard one time that you’re a fan of Bigfoot. Have you ever been to the Bigfoot museum in California?

PR

If, as you heard, I was a fan of Bigfoot, wouldn’t I have been to his museum? Of course, I’ve been there. I have carte blanche there. I just had lunch with Bigfoot. He’s Sasquatch to me. He’s everything you would imagine. And really big. Take your mind out of the gutter. I’m talking about his feet. But you know what they say . . ..

MJ

Did you ever see the classic Bigfoot movie, The Legend of Boggy Creek?

PR

I’ve never seen the Legend of Boggy Creek, but my friend and stuntman, Corey Eubanks, directed the classic, Bigfoot: The Unforgettable Encounter. I visited the set while it was being filmed. Lastly, Bigfoot has a cameo in the next Pee-wee movie.

MJ

At times, particularly early on in your career, you’ve been mistaken for your character, Pee-wee Herman. Considering that you’re so closely identified with your character, is that hard to deal with?

0

PR

PR

MJ

MJ

Sometimes it can be confusing having an alter-ego. For example, when I’m at the supermarket, am I shopping for myself or Pee-wee Herman? If I’m at the mall, and I see a nice pair of slacks, is it me or Pee-wee that’s admiring them? That speeding ticket I just received . . . that was definitely Pee-wee Herman. Since he doesn’t really exist, no one would have to pay it. What are your thoughts about other performers who were integrated with their characters, such as Mae West and Bela Lugosi? I would imagine that you’re aware that Lugosi was buried in his Dracula costume.

PR

As far as my thoughts on Bela Lugosi being buried in his Dracula costume, that is already in my will. To be buried in Bela Lugosi’s Dracula costume.

MJ

You have done a lot with your career, both with the Pee-wee character, and beyond him. What’s the most unexpected thing that ever happened to you when you were portraying the Peewee character?

PR

Someone ripped off my bike. It’s a long story. I’d have to lie down to tell it to you. Thanks for ruining my day.

MJ

You voiced a Star Wars character for Galaxy’s Edge at Disney World and Disneyland. Have you been to Galaxy’s Edge yet?

I love Galaxy’s Edge. I’m not gonna marry it, though. Most people don’t know that I have an apartment there like Walt Disney had in Disneyland. I’m there all the time. I live there. Seriously. Why would I make something like that up? I wouldn’t. I also have apartments in Flintstone-land, most of the Six Flags locations, and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. But that one’s a timeshare with Bigfoot. Your 35th Anniversary Tour of Pee-wee’s Big Adventure is selling out everywhere. Also, I believe that you previously did a Q&A for Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, and you talked about the movie for over two hours. If you’re talking for that long, how do you keep it fresh each time?

PR

It starts off fresh, but gets stale around the three-hour mark. I have trouble shutting up when I start talking about Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. By the way, it’s not a “Q&A.” It’s just an “A.” I don’t answer questions. I’m the only one that gets to talk. I just tell stories.

MJ

And finally, considering that you grew up in Florida, can Florida audiences expect any special content that’s Florida-centric?

PR

At the Florida shows, I plan on throwing in some palm tree references, the Gulf of Mexico, sea turtle nests, and Key West. I may talk about shell collecting, but I’m not sure yet.

MUSICAL RENAISSANCE MAN AT KRAVIS CENTER

An Interview with Michael Feinstein

By Gregg Shapiro

B

eginning with his professional association with Ira Gershwin more than 40 years ago and continuing through his 34-year recording career and his Emmy-nominated PBS series and related activities and projects, musician and music historian Michael Feinstein is the torch bearer and ambassador for the Great American Songbook. A talented pianist and singer known for his interpretations of songs from multiple periods, Feinstein has also made a name for himself as a bandleader, working with symphony orchestras as well as more intimate musical groups. Additionally, his work as an archivist, preserving the legacy of the Great American Songbook and sharing

158 | OutClique.com

his passion for it, has brought him acclaim from an even wider audience. A consummate entertainer, Feinstein spends a lot of time on the road performing in venues of varying sizes, including The Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, where he will be performing on March 16, 2020. I had the pleasure of speaking with Michael about his passion for music and more. Gregg Shapiro: Throughout your performing and recording careers, Michael, you have a long history of collaboration, having teamed up with a vast array of artists including Cheyenne Jackson, Jimmy Webb, Barbara Cook, Jerry Herman and George Shearing,

to mention a few. What is it about you that makes you so good at playing well with others? Michael Feinstein: My mother certainly wouldn’t have said that I played well with others when I was growing up [laughs] because I was a solitary kid. But when it comes to music, I love the inspiration that comes from working with another artist who may have a different point of view about a particular song or a particular style of music. So, at its best it blossoms into something where the whole is greater than the parts.

GS

The music world suffered a tragic loss with the passing of André Previn with whom you collaborated on your 2013 album Change of Heart: The Songs of André Previn. Would you please say a few words about Previn?

MF

André was one of my heroes. He was exquisitely gifted. His musical scope was unlike any I ever knew, and I knew Leonard Bernstein and Jule Styne and Jerry Herman and many extraordinary people. But André was a man who was so prodigious in his assimilation of music that he did everything. I’m not saying he had more talent than Leonard Bernstein, because Bernstein was larger than life and iconic. And yet, André to me is certainly equal to Bernstein, even though the perception of him is not the same. His embrace of classical music and jazz and popular song and film scoring and writing so many different kinds of music. Even a month shy of his 90th birthday, he was still fully inspired, writing music that belied his years.

GS MF

What a legacy!

It’s extraordinary! I wish that he was more acknowledged in his time because he’s deserving of it. It was a joy to record with him because I wanted to

record his songs, his popular songs. His first response to me when I first asked him about it was, ‘Are there enough?’ Certainly, there were. The only sad part is by that time he already had crippling arthritis and he didn’t play as well as he wanted to. If we had done the album only a year earlier, his playing would have been very different. That’s life. When I sang the vocals, I had to match his playing, which sometimes was lacking in some of the power he used to possess, so it turned out differently. But it was a snapshot of that moment in his life.

GS

Change of Heart and your 2014 holiday album are your most recent studio recordings. Is there any chance that a new Michael Feinstein album is in the works?

MF

Yes, I’m working on a project now that will be coming out in the fall that’s related to the Gershwins, the songs of George and Ira Gershwin. However, it’s a completely different, new and unusual take on the work that I think will be very surprising to people, and it is another collaboration. I’m actively working on it now and I’m being coy purposefully to wait to announce it, but it’s something that I think is among my best work. I think it’s a culmination of all that’s come before in my career that will give me a different means of interpreting this music at this point.

GS

I’m glad you mentioned the Gershwins because your devotion to the Great American Songbook comes through in a variety of ways – from your numerous recordings to your acclaimed PBS series and NPR series, from the book you wrote about the Gershwins to the founding of the Great American Songbook Foundation. With all the work you’ve done for the cause, do you have any other projects planned?

MF

There are always projects in the works. The way that I’m built is that I constantly force myself to do things that OutClique.com | 159

scare me. I want to do as much as I can in this life-time and I feel like I’ve wasted too much time because of fear or things that got in the way when I was younger. I want to do what I can to keep the music alive and also to keep creative expression fresh. I’m always working on different projects. I’m working on writing more music and I’m going to do another book soon. I’m particularly interested in music and healing, as a transformational tool because we need all the help we can get these days. Music is a physical vibration. We are made of vibrations. Therefore, music can be one of the most powerful therapeutic and healing tools that is available to us. People don’t understand nor harness the proper power of what it can offer.

GS

In addition to your roles as a performer and musical archivist and educator, you are also well-known as an impresario, operating venues bearing your name, such as Feinstein’s at the Nikko in San Francisco and Feinstein’s/54 Below in New York. What does that aspect of your work mean to you?

MF

I always had the fantasy of having a nightclub. The very makeup of a club is my favorite place in which to make music and to listen to music. I find that going to huge venues is something that, while most people appreciate it, I find a little intimidating. To create these clubs is a personal fulfillment. There is not a lot of money in it. There’s an old joke, “How do you own a nightclub and have a million dollars? Start with two million.”

GS

But it must be rewarding on some level to see these venues operating.

MF

Very much so. I love being able to bring all sorts of artists, seasoned and fresh, to the different venues. Especially in New York where we have so much talent in Manhattan. So many Broadway performers, some of whom have never done a nightclub turn. They are accustomed to inhabiting a character. Some are fantastic and embrace it. Others are absolutely terrified to not be in character. To watch the blooming and blossoming of the different talents is extraordinarily exciting.

GS

You mentioned the challenge of larger venues. You are embarking on a tour in which the various concert venues vary in size. What can people expect from this upcoming tour?

MF

I’m doing different types of shows in different places. In Florida, I conduct a symphony orchestra, as I do in Pasadena. Some shows I do with big band, others with combo. My shows are always interactive with the audience. What happens with the show is determined by the response of the audience, the energy. When an artist walks onstage, they feel the audience, they feel a certain sense of what the show’s going to be like. Not only from the first applause when you walk onstage, but also from the venue itself, and the hearts and souls of the audience. That affects the entire energy and attitude of what happens onstage. Every place I go is exciting and new. It is the intimacy of live performing that is fulfilling and exciting, and there’s something scary about it at the same time. I think people are inured to technology and things that are canned, but the live experience is a means of connecting that is essential for me.

Michael Feinstein performs at the Kravis Center’s Alexander W. Dreyfoos Concert Hall on March 16, 2020 at 8:00PM. Tickets are $39-$155. For more info: www.Kravis.org/Events/Legends. 160 | OutClique.com

SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER’S ANGIE RADOSH By Denny Patterson

I

sland City Stage is proud to present the classic play, Suddenly Last Summer, March 26 – April 26, 2020. Considered to be Tennessee Williams’ most poetic production, this story centers on Mrs. Violet Venable who is determined to lobotomize her niece, Catharine, to keep her quiet about the mysterious circumstances of her son’s death. Scandal and greed lurk around every corner, in addition to a little bit of cannibalism. OutClique had the pleasure of chatting more with Angie Radosh who plays Violet. A seasoned thespian, her work has been cited by New Times and BroadwayWorld. com, and she has received Silver Palm Awards for her appearances in Mothers and Sons (GableStage), The Glass Menagerie (New Theatre), and Speaking Elephant (Women’s Theatre Project). Her other South Florida credits include Florida Stage, Actors’ Playhouse, The Wick, and Zoetic Stage. Denny Patterson: Hi, Angie! Thank you for taking the time to chat with me. What can audiences expect from this upcoming production of Suddenly Last Summer? Angie Radosh: Well, anybody who is familiar with the play knows what it’s about. Anybody who doesn’t know, I think they will be shocked and haunted. The play is so unforgettable, whether you have seen it or not, you will not leave without feeling something. It is an incredible bit of storytelling by Tennessee Williams, and it is so different from all his other work. I think that is why it’s not done often because it is so hauntingly beautiful in the writing. The story is so hard to embrace because it is so shocking. People will walk away feeling ambivalent about it. They are going to feel something, which is what I love about theatre. You can be entertained, shocked, educated, everything. This play does many, many things.

DP AR

What are you looking forward to the most about playing Violet Venable?

DP AR

Did you audition for the show, or were you asked to be involved?

I have had the pleasure of doing A Streetcar Named Desire as Blanche DuBois, and I did Amanda in The Glass Menagerie, two of his other heroines, and I have always wanted to do this play. I am at the right time in my life to do it, I’m at the right age now. Thank goodness I can still do it. I am looking forward to making this work. This character, it is so easy to hate her. She is not likeable, and to me the challenge is to find what drives her. In all of life, love is usually what drives us, so it’s finding the love. Nobody’s all good or all bad. If I were to play a character that was pristine, I would look to see what’s the darkness of that character. This is just the opposite. I need to find what it is about her that drives her from a point of love. It is the love of her son that we need to understand. It’s a unique kind of love.

I was doing a show called Breadcrumbs at Primal Forces, and Andy Rogow, the artistic director at Island City Stage and who is also directing this, came to see it and he talked with me afterwards about doing the role. I jumped at the chance. No matter what, I don’t want to miss doing this. He has seen my work before, so it was very nice to be approached that way rather than having to audition. It’s nice to be able to say yes right away.

DP

What kind of impact do you believe Tennessee Williams has made on the theatre world?

AR

I think he is one of the most prolific and successful playwrights. I think OutClique.com | 167

his writing has influenced so many actors and directors and designers and other writers because it is lyrical and beautifully written. As an actor, he writes beautifully. For both women and men. He is a true classic genius as far as I’m concerned. I think that’s why his plays last forever. They are true classics because they can be done 20, 30, 40 years from now and still have the impact that opening night audiences saw back in the 40s. Art reflects our culture and our society at the time, and I think he gave a lot of himself in his work. We know a lot about him through his writings. Like The Glass Menagerie, that is really his story. Suddenly Last Summer is also autobiographical in many ways because his sister did have a lobotomy, which is what is proposed in this play.

DP AR

Have you always had a passion for performing and acting?

Oh, yes. I always have. High school is kind of where I found my place. I wasn’t smart enough to be a national merit, I wasn’t coordinated enough to be a cheerleader, and I really didn’t want to do that. I had a wonderful drama teacher and that is where I found myself and what I wanted to do with my life. I’ve been in and out of it. I was raising my son, so I was out of it for about 1520 years, but you know, it’s never too late to go back. That’s my passion for it. I’m thrilled to still be doing it.

DP you?

AR

So, you believe Suddenly Last Summer will be a challenging production for

Yes. I think it’s going to be a challenging production for all of us. I applaud Andy for doing this. It’s not like other Tennessee Williams’ plays only because of the story that it tells. The story is so shocking and Tennessee Williams himself even says, “I wrote it because of my repulsion at the way

people use each other in the name of love.” It’s not a pretty play, yet it’s impactful and I am excited to do it. We are always a little nervous about taking on a role as formidable as Violet Venable, but I look forward to it. I can’t wait to get into rehearsal and really get going.

DP AR

What do you hope to take away from this experience?

DP AR

What are some of your interests outside of theatre?

DP AR

Do you have anything lined up after Suddenly Last Summer?

I’ll just be pleased if I can do it and do it well enough to serve the play, my fellow actors, and Tennessee Williams’ words. I hope to make the character believable. I think that’s what every actor wants, to be genuine and honest and bring all this passion that this woman has in her life and for her son and his work. I hope that comes across successfully.

I love gardening. I am getting good at orchids, and they have kind of become my passion. I also love to exercise, I love going to the theatre, I love singing. At this point in my life, it is just wonderful to still be able to do theatre and have very good friends in the theatre. I also, of course, love Netflix. I love a good binge watching on a weekend. Doing theatre at night, I miss a lot of TV.

I do, but I am not at liberty to say much just yet. And there’s another project, but the ink on the paper hasn’t dried yet. I’m a little superstitious until I know that it’s going to happen. I also have my one woman show that I am trying to get produced. It’s called Tightrope and it’s somewhat autobiographical, but I call it a play with music. It’s called Tightrope because that to me is what life is all about.

THE 2020

ULTIMATE MIAMI DRAG COMPETITION

A

prize?

By Denny Patterson re you ready to see some of South Florida’s fiercest drag queens battle it out for a $5,000 grand

The Ultimate Miami Drag Queen Competition is returning to Magic City Casino for its ninth season on Saturday, March 28, 2020 at 8:00PM Contestants will show off their talents, personalities and unique styles in this one-of-a-kind event. Ultimate Miami, LLC was formed to promote, through competition, Miami’s outstanding eclectic composition of talent in various subsets in the fields of mixology, entertainment, and culinary arts. The company’s goal is to showcase rising stars that call Miami home and derive the essence of their skills from the experiences of their surroundings. The evening will start off with a bang as the queens take the stage with their various talents that will include singing, dancing, and more than likely, flipping and tumbling. Contestants will then walk the runway in a signature outfit of their choice. These looks range from sexy and demure to totally outrageous. There are no rules or guidelines in this round and the contestants never cease to impress 170 | OutClique.com

audiences with their sickening styles. Each drag queen will then have to answer a randomly selected question, written by audience members. At the end of the three rounds, a panel of judges will select a winner, and one lucky contestant will earn the title of “Ultimate Miami Drag Queen” and walk away $5,000 richer. This year’s panel of judges will include transgender advocate Lauren Foster, WMIA radio personality Letty B., and society photographer Dale Stine. Making a special appearance will be last year’s Ultimate Miami Drag Queen winner, Karla Croqueta. Also known as Josue Garcia, this bearded beauty instantly became the crowd favorite once she set foot on stage. With her beaming confidence and abundance of skills, Croqueta sang live during the talent portion and played to the audience with her Celia Cruz-inspired gown. She delivered an awe-inspiring performance and an actual tray of croquetas to the judges during her final strut down the runway. Talk about staying true to her name! She believes that staying true to herself is what helped her clench the winning title and the grand money prize, and she hopes this year’s queens will do the same.

Although this competition is about the contestants, the audience will also enjoy performances from headlining entertainers. Past headliners have included RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants Shangela, Sharon Needles, Jinkx Monsoon, Vanessa Vanjie Mateo, and Adore Delano. Let’s meet this year’s headliners! Chad Michaels

As one of the world’s premier Cher impersonators, Chad Michaels became a prominent name within the LGBTQ community after coming in second on the fourth season of Drag Race and winning All Stars. With a career spanning over two decades, Chad has collaborated with some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including Cyndi Lauper, Gene Simmons, Elton John, Christina Aguilera, and even the diva herself, Cher. Chad currently produces and performs with the longest running female impersonation show in California, The Dreamgirls Revue, and travels extensively touring nationally and internationally as a proud representative of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Eureka O’Hara

An advocate for body positivity, the larger-than-life Eureka O’Hara is a self-proclaimed “Elephant Queen” with plenty of charm and charisma. After leaving the ninth season of Drag Race early due to medical reasons, Eureka has been the only queen to be invited back to the competition by Mama Ru. Eureka gave a heart-stopping performance in season 10 and ultimately took second place. Eureka cites that iconic drag star Divine is an influence to their drag aesthetic. Ada Vox

Not a contestant on Drag Race, but Ada Vox was the first ever drag queen to compete in American Idol and make it to the top 10. Lionel Richie called her “a movement unto herself” as she constantly wowed the judges, audience, and viewers. An unstoppable force, Ada is a songstress first and foremost with a tremendous vocal range. She will leave the audience reeling with her versions of Radiohead’s “Creep” and The Lion King’s “Circle of Life.”

www.TheUltimateMiami.com General admission is $30 per person at the door. VIP tables range from $200-$400 and include seating for four. For tickets or more event details, visit www.TheUltimateMiami.com or call (844) 234-SHOW. Attendees must be 21 and over to enjoy an evening of stunning fashion, over-the-top talents, and shameless fun.

THE SOUTH FLORIDA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Welcomes Mark Bebbington By Denny Patterson

T

he South Florida Symphony Orchestra is closing out this year’s spectacular season with Igor Stravinsky’s mythical and enchanting The Firebird. Rarely performed, this full ballet score launched the young Stravinsky to international fame, now widely considered the most influential composer of the 20th century. Additionally, the Masterworks IV concert will also feature internationally acclaimed pianist Mark Bebbington who will perform British composer Frederick Delius’ only Piano Concerto. Show dates are April 16-18, 2020. This is Bebbington’s first time performing with the SFSO. “I am very excited to work with the South Florida Symphony Orchestra and the chance to perform such a rarely performed piece,” he said. “The chance to work with musicians in an unfamiliar part of the U.S., at least for me, is such a treat.” Critical plaudits that have greeted Bebbington’s performances and recordings have singled him out as a British pianist of the rarest refinement and maturity. In other words, he is one of Britain’s greatest pianists. “I started playing piano when I was nine years old,” he said. “Quite old by today’s standards!” Internationally recognized as a champion of British music, Bebbington has recorded extensively for the Somm label to critical acclaim, with no fewer than nine of his recent CDs awarded five stars by BBC Music Magazine. His most recent CDs include piano works by Arnold Bax and Harriet Cohen, three British Piano Concertos with the City of

Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and an allGershwin album with Leon Botstein and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. “I enjoy recording with the Somm label and I have built up a significant catalogue of British music, including the Delius Piano Concerto I will be performing with you,” Bebbington said. “As in all things, intensive preparation is a major factor in a recording’s success.” Bebbington studied at the Royal College of Music where he was a recipient of numerous international awards and prizes, including a Leverhulme Scholarship, a Winston Churchill Fellowship, and the Ivan Sutton Recording Prize. He studied in Italy with the legendary Aldo Ciccolini. Over recent seasons, Bebbington has toured throughout Central and Northern Europe, the Far East, North Africa and in the United States as both a recitalist and soloist with some of the world’s leading orchestras. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2017 with Botstein and the American Symphony Orchestra and appeared with the Buffalo Symphony Orchestra and on tour with the Israel Camerata and Czech National Opera. He has also been featured both as a soloist and recitalist on BBC television and radio networks. “I am a diligent preparer for every concert,” Bebbington said. “I like to get to know the work as well as possible, both technically and musically. Then performing repertoire to new audiences always gives me a thrill.” After Bebbington’s time with the SFSO, he will be playing Delius’ Piano Concerto in London and Paris. Overall, his itinerary of constant concert work never ceases.

PRIDE OF THE AMERICAS BEACH FESTIVAL DJ LINE-UP Photo Courtesy of Pride Fort Lauderdale & Pride of the Americas 2020

O

rganizers of the first Pride of the Americas in Greater Fort Lauderdale announced the DJ line-up for the twoday Beach Festival on April 25-26, 2020 at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park. Pride of the Americas is being planned and hosted by Pride Fort Lauderdale with support from the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB), the presenting sponsor. More than 350,000 visitors from Alaska to Argentina are expected to arrive in Broward County, April 21-26, 2020, for five days of events including seminars and educational programs, a performing arts festival, health care symposium, business conference, service projects, a parade, and parties. Pride

of the Americas will culminate with the twoday Beach Festival, sponsored by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), on Saturday and Sunday from noon-9:00PM. After the Saturday afternoon parade, tens of thousands of visitors will flood the street behind the giant rainbow flag, and a newlycommissioned transgender rights flag, and march to Fort Lauderdale Beach Park, where they will find hundreds of craft, product, and food vendors and live entertainment on three stages. The featured DJs on the main stage on Saturday include DJ Anne Louise, an international circuit favorite from Salvador, Brazil, and DJ Tatiana, OutClique.com | 181

Spanish-born/Denver-based Latina DJ popular at both women’s and men’s dance events. Also, on Saturday, organizers are planning a return of the Bear Beach Bash on the festival grounds with bear go-go dancers and a special guest DJ to be announced.

On both days, a third Hip Hop/Caribbean/Latin stage will feature top DJs and live performers playing an eclectic selection of music that is expected to appeal to the diverse attendees from throughout the Americas. Anthony Winn Entertainment is programming the stage.

On Sunday, DJ/producer Manny Lehman will return to South Florida for a special set on the main stage, followed by international DJ/producer Paulo from Brazil and now Los Angeles. The evening will close with a spectacular fireworks display.

Pride organizers are still in contract negotiations with an international superstar to conclude the Beach Festival on Sunday, but an announcement is imminent.

“We knew we would have an international audience at Pride of the Americas, so we specifically sought out international DJs,” explained Pride Fort Lauderdale president Miik Martorell. “Anne Louise and Paulo are two of the hottest DJs from Brazil, Tatiana has built an international following among both men and women, and well, Manny Lehman is simply a global legend.”

“It’s never an easy process signing artists,” emphasized Martorell, who has been working on securing an artist for more than six months. “We not only wanted a big artist to headline Pride of the Americas, we wanted the right artist—someone who will appeal to an international audience and is also a strong ally of the LGBT+ community. We’re very close and I can promise everyone they won’t be disappointed.”

Local and regional drag performers and musicians will perform all afternoon on Sunday on the community stage, with dance sets by DJ Josh Atom. Coordinator Nicole Halliwell, one of the region’s busiest performers and producers, has lined up two dozen talented entertainers for the stage. “This stage is always one of the most popular areas at Pride Fort Lauderdale each year,” said Martorell, “attracting drag and music fans of all ages and backgrounds. We have an amazing lineup of professional performers once again for Pride of the Americas.” Admission to the Pride of the Americas Beach Festival is FREE, although a $5 donation is suggested to offset the costs of security and emergency services.
