effective, and essential for ending the pandemic in Africa and globally.”

Omanyala is the current African record holder and eighth fastest man of all time in the 100 meters. AHF broke the news of the partnership with the famous sprinter at a recent press conference in Nairobi.

“This vaccination campaign is important for all Africans, and I’m excited to partner with AHF in increasing awareness across the region,” added Omanyala. “We hope that this information reaches as many people as possible, letting everyone know that getting vaccinated against COVID-19 is the best way to protect themselves, their loved ones, and their communities. Because in an interconnected world, the pandemic has made one fact perfectly clear: No nation is safe if even one nation is left unprotected.”

“We are thrilled that Mr. Omanyala has agreed to collaborate with us on this vital vaccine initiative,” said AHF Kenya Country Program Director Dr. Samuel Kinyanjui. “With his help, we hope to spread the word continent-wide that COVID-19 vaccines are safe,

Along with the video, Omanyala will also engage in conversations with experts in medicine, research, and policy to decrease vaccine hesitancy that will be broadcast across multiple platforms.

Give a Business Some Love By Rod Davis, CEO, BBB serving southeast Florida and the Caribbean

I

t was great to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a loved one. It is always a good idea to do something special for those we love and that is true for the businesses that make us smile too. BBB provides a few ways for you to support your favorite business. BBB Torch Awards for Ethics The BBB Torch Awards for Ethics is the most prestigious honor BBB can present to exceptional organizations for their dedication to integrity and ethical practices. Award selection for BBB Torch Award for Ethics is based on the following criteria: • Character • Culture • Customers • Community Businesses that have a leader who embodies in word and action, ethical leadership that creates a positive customer centric culture, thrive because their employees are proud of the business, seek to live up to high performance standards and create loyal customers are able to compete for the BBB Torch Award for Ethics. These same businesses are active in our community promoting a strong community and using their resources to help others. We all know great businesses. They help us with home projects, deliver goods of high quality on time and with care and provide services that keep you coming back to them because they value you as a customer. Now it is time you can do something for your favorite business. You can nominate them for the BBB Torch Awards for Ethics. bbb.org/local/0633/torch-awards/nominate The winners of the BBB Torch Awards for Ethics for southeast Florida and the Caribbean will be announced in July at our annual ceremony. Winners of the local award compete for the International Award. Businesses compete in small, medium and large size business categories and last year, the winner of the International Torch Awards for Business Ethics was CITY FURNITURE. With your help, we will be able to find other great businesses to represent our community. BBB4Good BBB is also launching the BBB4Good program to recognize

businesses that combine purpose and profit. The social impact sector is starting to take off and consumers want an easy way to find and support businesses with a commitment to a social cause. Businesses are advancing environmental, social equity, veteran initiatives and most causes important to individuals in our community. According to a Futera study in 2018, if a business isn’t helping its customers improve their environmental and social footprint, then they are in danger of disappointing 88% of them. The first approved participant for the BBB4Good program in our area is 4Ocean. 4Ocean makes a one pound promise to have their professional, full-time captains and crews pull one pound of trash from the ocean, rivers, and coastlines for every product sold. BBB validates compliance with their pledge by receiving data on the number of items sold and the poundage from weigh stations around the world used by the 4Ocean clean up crews. 4Ocean also donates at least 1% of their gross sales to ocean-friendly organizations with a proven track record of driving change for the ocean and planet. You can read more about BBB4Good at: bbbmarketplacetrust.org/story/42427725/bbb4good-prototype

If you know a business that is taking on an important social impact cause in our community, you can recommend them to BBB for inclusion in the BBB4Good program so that other consumers are able to find and support that business and the cause it champions. To recommend a business, send an email to BBB4Good@bbbsefl.org and include the name, address, phone number and, if the business has a website, the URL. A Simple Customer Review Lastly, if you just want to share a review on a business that you like, you can always leave a review at: bbb.org/leave-a-review We all like to receive positive feedback or recognition from time to time. Too often, businesses and their employees only hear the negatives. Join your BBB and help us shine the light on those special businesses that do a great job every day.

In his private practice, Keechl took on cases that pioneered case law for protecting his LGBTQA+ clients. He believes we are living in a time where our basic liberties are at risk. He also believes rolling back women’s rights is a big step towards curtailing marriage equality. “What’s going on now is the Roe v Wade issue, the right for a woman to control her own body,” he says. “Everyone is focusing on a woman’s right to choose, which has been a fundamental right for years and years.” If Roe is rolled back, it will be a body blow to the right to privacy. Keechl says once that goes, anything could be fair game. “The most obvious threat is that the U.S. Supreme Court determines that there is no right to privacy. That is the beginning. If you want to take away our right to marriage and the right to not have our relationships criminalized, that’s where you start.” This isn’t the first time Keechl’s fought against Republican indifference. Early in the AIDS crisis, President Reagan and his enablers ignored the LGBTQA+ community’s cries for help. He was one of few authentic voices demanding to be heard. “There weren’t many openly gay attorneys in Broward back in 1987 when I graduated from law school. I knew I had to live my life as an openly gay attorney, so that those future LGBTQA+ attorneys would have a role model. I started as an associate at the law firm of Brinkley Morgan and quickly became an owner. After the AIDS crisis took the life of my companion in the early 1990s, I knew I had to become politically active and speak out. So, I became involved in politics and eventually I became the President of the Dolphin Democrats.” That laid the groundwork for his political campaigns and time in office. “I soon realized that the LGBTQA+ community had few elected officials, so in 2006 I threw my hat in the ring for the Broward County Commission, District 4, seat. It was one of nine commission seats. It hugged the coast of Broward and it had always been a Republican leaning seat. In fact, the incumbent was a Republican who had

48 | OutClique.com

once been the head of the Florida Senate. No one thought I had a chance of winning except my partner, Ted, and me. Surprising everyone, I won.” That achievement was a watershed moment for South Florida’s LGBTQA+ community. “Being sworn in as a Broward County Commissioner with [my partner] Ted holding the Bible was truly one of the best moments of my life to date. I loved the job and I was honored when my eight colleagues selected me to be the Mayor of Broward County for 2009-2010. Thank God, we didn’t have any hurricanes that year, but I did have to deal with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill!” During his term, Keechl worked on ethics reform when it was clear elected officials could use their office for personal gain, as well as lobby for businesses, including their own private practices. Keechl pushed for a ban on those practices, and left a more transparent Broward County government behind when he lost election in 2010. Republicans are still making it hard for Democrats to stay in office, and Keechl says Democrats in Tallahassee are just trying to keep their heads above water. “My Democrat friends in the state legislature are just treading water, because there’s not enough of them. We are in a place right now where the Republican majorities in the legislature could be set for 20-30 years.” For now, he hopes salvation will come from the White House. “God forbid President Biden doesn’t have the opportunity to replace one, two, or three justices and then we get another Trump in office. We’re gonna be doomed for the rest of our lives. I believe that.” Biden is in the process of selecting his first justice for the Supreme Court, which should be seated by this summer. However, after the midterms, Republicans could regain control of the Senate and block or limit future choices.

Luck

By Eric Noel Roman

I am so lucky! That’s right, luck has been on my side the whole time. I took the time to work on myself, improve my self image, become a more positive me, a happier me, a stronger me. Do not confuse this with the term, “The New Me.” I am not trying to reinvent myself or use my favorite word “resolution.” This version of me did not start as an idea, it began as a plan. As I embarked on my journey to explore me, improve my faults, and learn from my mistakes, I have always wanted to bring people along with me during this long journey. The luck of it all is right here on this page. These black and white letters. They have allowed me to provide a window for others to see they are not alone. They battle the same issues as many others and I am there with you giving my perspective. I am lucky to be able to do this. You might ask yourself, “How the heck does this relate to me?” Well, the answer is simple, I have been lucky enough to have this outlet. As do you. Everyday you encounter many people through social media, texts, cell phone, email, etc. Occasionally, you might be lucky enough to help someone through a tough time with your words. During your rise, take that fortune and spread it amongst others. That way your universe is as lucky as you. Eric Noel Roman DJ, obstacle racer, motivational writer from North Miami Beach, living life one day at a time, and making a difference one person at a time.

Your gift directly impacts the people we serve and helps those living with HIV/AIDS get the care they need. Florida AIDS Walk works to raise HIV awareness, educate and inspire our community to work together to end HIV. Together we are making a difference, visit BrowardHouse.org/Events to support the cause with a donation! The mission of Broward House is to improve the quality of life for individuals impacted with chronic health challenges, including HIV, by providing pathways to wellness. We welcome people of all backgrounds, genders, races and sexual orientations. Our goals are simple: to support the health and stability of each individual who walks through our door with a plan unique to their goals. While Broward House began its mission by providing housing, and it remains a core component of services, it is realized that individuals require an array of support services for true healing to occur. It is this philosophy that has led to the expansion to a full array of support, behavioral health, prevention and health care services. On Saturday, March 19, Broward House will be participating in a 5K fundraising walk to help raise funds for local HIV and AIDS service organizations. We need your help. While HIV and AIDS have fallen out of the spotlight in recent years, the epidemic is far from over. An estimated 1.1 million people in the US are living with HIV, and 15% of them don’t know it. Will you help Broward House make a difference in this fight by donating to our walk to fight HIV? Your gift makes a direct impact on Broward House’s mission and goal to support people living with HIV/AIDS and help them thrive. Florida AIDS Walk works to bring attention to this pressing issue, educate and inspire our community to work together, and end the epidemic once and for all. Together, we are making a difference! Local Realtor Continues A Lifetime of Giving Back By John Hayden South Florida’s housing market is on fire. Demand is outpacing supply, and sellers are getting more out of their home than they could have dreamed

as recently as a couple of years ago. One realtor, Cary J. Giacalone, sees this booming housing market as an opportunity to give back to South Florida, especially its vibrant LGBTQA+ community.

“I have always believed that one cannot consider themselves successful if they are not willing to contribute to the needs of the community,” Giacalone told OutClique. “These are not just words but a way of life for me. Currently, time is limited, and I cannot volunteer as much as I have in the past, so I needed a way to give back. And now more than ever, giving back is vital to our communities.” To make an impact, he donates part of his commission from each real estate transaction to a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. “When you buy or sell a home with me as your partner, I will donate in my client’s name five percent of my personal net commission to the charity of their choice,” Giacalone said. “If the organization is located in South Florida and related to the LGBTQA+ community, the arts, or animals, I increase the donation to 10 percent , and 12 percent when designated to SunServe, The Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida, Island City Stage, or United Church of Christ. Organizations that have benefited from this program include SunServe, Island City Stage, Wags & Walks, South Florida Symphony, Florida AIDS Walk and The Trevor Project. Giacalone came out in the mid-1980s when he was married and raising children in New York. Despite the difficulties it would cause, he knew he had to live authentically. “It was the height of the AIDS crisis,” he said. “I was in a quandary, wanting to understand all I could about how to guide myself through what was happening to the community and find my way in a world that was new to me. I decided to jump right into my new life by volunteering in an LGBTQA+ environment. The only thing that made sense was something related to the crisis.” Giacalone’s propensity to give back started with being an original volunteer for the Long Island AIDS Project, which eventually became the Long Island Association for AIDS Care, working both the hotline and as a buddy to those living with HIV/AIDS. He was on the board and part of the first Long Island LGBTQ+ Chorus, ran groups for the

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in New York and was a peer counselor at Identity House in New York. In 2012 he joined the TriVersity Center for Gender and Sexual Diversity in Milford, PA, as Secretary/Treasurer & Chair of the Planning Committee. In 2015 he was elected Executive Director/President of its Board of Directors. He facilitated TriVersity’s P3 Youth Group, Parents Group, HIV Support Gathering, Transgender Support Group and Spouse/Partners of Transgender Individuals Gathering. He planned and executed events, including the Share Your Heart Dance, which benefited a local food pantry; The Prom, an LGBTQ/Ally event for all ages; a Pride Weekend and more. He received an award for Outstanding Volunteer in Northeastern Pennsylvania, as well as local awards for his contributions to the community. Since moving to the Fort Lauderdale area with his husband, Kris Jarmann, in July of 2017, Giacalone has volunteered feeding the homeless at the United Church of Christ and gathering clothes and hygiene items for them; at Broward House in connection with their Dining Out for Life program; and as a member of the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida, and along with his husband has run and volunteered for various chorus events. Giacalone had a distinguished career in banking with The Bank of New York and JPMorgan Chase, where he held varied roles including public relations, sales management of over 250 branches and overall management of 50-plus branches. He began his realtor career with Grayrider Realty in New York, then worked with Century 21 in Pennsylvania, where he was designated a CENTURY 21 Fine Homes & Estates® Associate Realtor. In 2019, he was honored to join Galleria International Realty of Fort Lauderdale, a prestigious company with an impeccable reputation, as a Realtor Associate. “By partnering with me as your realtor, you will receive superb professional, honest, and friendly service and at the same time you can benefit a charity that touches your heart. The choice is clear. What organization would you like to benefit through your real estate transaction?”

For more information, email Giacalone at caryjgiacalone@gmail.com, call or text him at (917) 678-7093, or visit his website at CaryG-DareToDream.Homes.

Suddenly, Last Summer by Tennessee Williams March 17 – April 17, 2022

Tennessee Williams was one of the true titans of live theater over the past century and Suddenly, Last Summer is, without question, one of his most memorable works. Evoking themes of aging and beauty, hypocrisy, greed, sexual repression and cannibalism, the play is also the one that the author himself considered his most poetic. On a hot, steamy afternoon you will find Violet Venable and her niece, Catherine, waging battle in a war that will cement the legacy of Violet’s son, Sebastian. Was he a brilliant artist, devoted son or sexual predator? Island City Stage is extremely excited and proud to be producing its first Tennessee Williams classic.

The Mystery of Irma Vep by Charles Ludlam June 9 - July 10, 2022 Vampire attacks, werewolf sightings, and the resurrection of an Egyptian princess all make an appearance in this hilarious send-up of gothic romance and horror films in which two actors and lightning, fast costume changes are the stars of the show. Charles Ludlam and The Ridiculous Theatrical Company were pioneers, now legends in LGBT+ theater, elevating camp to an art form and paving the way for companies like Island City Stage. Island City Stage is pleased to present their best known and most produced work.

Angel Burgos and Andy Rogow

One In Two by Donja R. Love August 4 – September 4, 2022 Three actors sit in an ethereal waiting room. Each performance, the audience chooses which actor must portray the lead character in this unforgiving story of a Black man diagnosed with HIV. But whose story is it, really, as one of every two Black gay men will be diagnosed with HIV in their lifetime? How have these men been treated by the LGBT+ and Black communities? Through humor and pathos, Donja R. Love has written a deeply personal call to action and created an unflinching portrait of being Black and gay in America, today.

An opera adapted from one of the great novels of the 20th century has awarded its debut to the world-renowned artist faculty and gifted students of the Frost Opera Theater and Frost Symphony Orchestra of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. With members of its faculty led by Metropolitan Opera baritone Kim Josephson in the title role and 9-time Emmy Winning internationally renowned Maestro Gerard Schwarz conducting the Frost Symphony Orchestra, the world premiere of the opera, THE LEOPARD will take place at 3pm on March 5 and 6, 2022 at the South Miami Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC).. Masterworks IV Featuring Duo Beaux Arts By Denny Patterson

I

nternationally renowned husband and wife concert pianists and recording artists Catherine Lan and Tao Lin, known professionally as Duo Beaux Arts, will join the South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) for its Masterworks IV series. This will be their first time performing on SFSO’s mainstage. “We’re absolutely, incredibly excited to play with such a fine orchestra with Maestra Alfonso and to present such an exciting piece,” Lin says. “It’s not often that a dual piano team has an opportunity to play double concertos with an orchestra just because, logistically, it can be tricky to bring two quality instruments onto the same stage. We’re definitely looking forward to it.” During the COVID-19 shutdown, the duo were regular

performers during the SFSO’s virtual Intermission Music Series, which was presented for free. For Masterworks IV, Lan and Lin will play Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos in E-flat Major, one of the limited number of works for two or more solo instruments with orchestra. “The interesting thing about this work is that there’s actually not a lot of historical information on it,” Lin explains. “There is no consensus on when it was written, but it is speculated that it was written around the year 1777. Also, it is speculated that it was actually written by Mozart’s very, very talented sister, Maria Anna. She was four years older than him, and it has been said that she was even more musically talented than her brother, which is absolutely mind boggling and difficult to imagine. Through their correspondence, it appeared that Mozart really idolized

her, and by all accounts, she was an excellent pianist and harpsichordist. “Very recently, and again, this is pure speculation, I read an article from The Guardian a couple weeks ago claiming that Mozart might have taken over some of his sister’s compositions and put his own name on it,” he continues. “The only sad part is that we are not able to really judge the great musical talent of Maria Anna because none of her compositions survive, but we do know that she did compose because Mozart praised her compositions in their correspondence. Most likely, this piece was meant for them to play together. It’s a work in three movements, and the first and second movements are festival and virtuosic, while the third movement is typically lyrical and aristocratic.” Known for their adrenalized performances, Duo Beaux Arts was formed in 2008 and they have shared their passion for music across the world. Lan started studying piano music at a very young age. “I started at the age of three,” she says. “As a young child, it was not much fun practicing hours and hours a day, but during my teenages years, maybe around when I was 14, that’s when the turning point was. By that time, I really appreciated the beauty of music and just fell in love.” Lin’s story is quite similar to his wife’s.

Lin and Lan first met at a music competition in Davie, Florida, and got married in 2008, the same year they formed Duo Beaux Arts. “We have a similar way of interpreting music, so it’s always nice to work with someone who sees similar ideas about the music and ways to perform together,” Lin says. “It’s communication.” “We have similar musical instincts,” Lan adds. “Also, the repertoire itself is wonderful both for piano duet music, which is four hands at one piano, and piano duo, which involves two pianos, like this particular concerto.” As for long-term goals, the duo simply hopes to maintain a long lasting career doing what they love and bringing joy to listeners. In May 2022, they will be performing at the Romanza Festivale in St. Augustine, Florida combining a program of traditional music with several world premieres by a resident composer. After that, they will be touring throughout the southern states, as well as playing in Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia, and Vermont.

“I started when I was about four years old, and in a way, I had no choice in terms of the instrument because both my parents taught piano at the conservatory in Shanghai,” he

says. “They basically parked me in front of the piano to see if I would somehow take a liking to the instrument. They felt that I might have had some connection to music itself because, my mom loves to tell this story, I was apparently weeping when she was practicing a piece. She felt that the music touched me in some ways, so they wanted to explore that further. Just like Catherine, it was difficult to sit down and practice everyday while younger, but around my teenage years, I think there was a turning point where music started to mean a lot to me.”

Spend an Intimate Evening with Alan Cumming By Denny Patterson

W

hether he’s emceeing in the Broadway revival of Cabaret or starring in the CBS drama Instinct, one thing is for sure - we absolutely cannot get enough of Alan Cumming. The Scottish actor, singer, and writer will return to South Florida on April 1, 2022 with his brandnew cabaret show Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age. A one night only engagement at The Parker, audiences are invited to spend an evening of story and song celebrating and exploring his puckish, eclectic spirit and joie de vivre, in a mischievous exploration of that most communal of pastimes: aging. OutClique caught up with the Tony and Oliver Awardwinning star to talk more about the show and his other projects. Denny Patterson: We cannot wait to see you at The Parker performing your new cabaret, Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age. What can audiences expect? Can you give us a tease as to what kind of stories you might tell? Alan Cumming: It’s a show about something that we all share, getting older, and it’s me questioning people’s attitudes about what you’re supposed to do. Act your age, what does that mean and who gets to decide? It’s me trying to grapple with all that stuff, as well as showing that I’m someone who still feels very curious and excited about life. We’re all decaying; it’s a slow march towards death. There’s also a section about what aging does to your body and gravity, visits to the dermatologist office becoming more and more traumatic each time you go, and there’s also lots of fun songs and laughs.

DP: Why do you think aging can be such a touchy subject for some people?

AC: We live in a culture where we worship at the altar of

youth, especially women. In the show, I talk about how we have decided, as a Western culture, that aging is the worst thing that could possibly happen to you. Yet, it is something that happens to all of us, and it’s an interesting concept that we look at it so negatively because in other

cultures, aging is a positive. People also just don’t look for the positive things in getting older, and I talk about that as well. You have wisdom, you see patterns in your life repeating and you are able to stand back from things and think, oh, I see this is happening again. Last time, I made that disastrous decision. Maybe I’ll make a positive choice this time. I also enjoy what’s happening to my body, but I think it’s easier for a man to say that, and it’s not true for everyone. For the most part, I am pretty okay with everything thus far. I think I’m in the sweet spot right now.

DP: Last year, you released your memoir Baggage:

Tales from a Fully Packed Life, which tackles high-profile highs, mental lows, and your life in Hollywood. This book stemmed from your previous memoir, Not My Father’s Son?

AC: Kind of. I started writing it, and then over the course of

writing, I realized that one of the things I wanted to say was in reaction to Not My Father’s Son. That book had such a positive reaction. Really amazing. I wrote a lot about abuse in my childhood, and it struck a chord with thousands of people, who have contacted me saying they were helped and it sort of galvanized them to deal with things in their life. Someone like me, people often think, he’s got a great life. He’s happy chappy, but I revealed terrible things that happened in my past. However, I didn’t like the way that it was sort of giving off this narrative that everything was sorted out and I was recovered. That was the negative side to the reaction. You never really get over trauma, you just figure out how to deal with it. This idea that it’s all done and dusted is wrong. It’s very American to say, everything’s fine, it’s finished, but it’s not and we shouldn’t be ashamed of that. It’s always going to be a part of us, and it certainly is for me.

DP: This summer, you will play Scotland’s national

bard Robert Burns in a solo show at the 75th Edinburgh International Festival (EIF). What can you tell us about that?

AC: It’s a dance theatre piece that opens at EIF. It will then tour Scotland then go to the Joyce Theatre in New York.
