ACTION & AWARENESS FOR WORLD AIDS DAY

community hero that continues to elevate the work of ending the stigma, ensuring access to care, and being a voice for the voiceless in the local community.”

This year they’re lining up a party to rock our area and get people engaged in a cause many seem to forget about, especially around the holidays. The bash goes down December 7, 2019 at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami, and will feature Todrick Hall of American Idol (as well as being the director for Taylor Swift’s, “You Need to Calm” down music video). Others include Miami’s own Amara La Negra and legendary Latin Grammy winning artist La India from Puerto Rico. Imara Canady from AHF told me the free event is set up to be a party with a purpose, that “Will be an evening of education, awareness, and engagement through an artistic lens. And it’s an opportunity to honor heroes. AHF will bring together a cross section of the South Florida community to pay tribute to some of the champions of the early AIDS epidemic, while also honoring a local

While the party is fun, Imara says AHF’s mission has a serious focus, especially in the age of PrEP and undetectability. “As the epicenter of HIV in America, messaging around HIV education, awareness and prevention is critical for those living in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. AHF continues to stress the importance of all of the tools in the "safe sex" toolbox, including the incorporation of condom usage. In all of our health care and wellness centers, Out of the Closet Thrift Stores and on our mobile units, thousands of free condoms are distributed and made available. We also provide free condoms to local bars, and other venues, where at-risk populations frequent.” And their help is here for anybody. “ Through our commitment to providing services regardless of one's ability to pay, we ensure that HIV testing and care are accessible to those individuals in need. Addressing the HIV epidemic disproportionately impacting the South Florida community and many communities across the south is going to take all facets of the community coming

emembering the losses through past decades, embracing the changing fight today, and celebrating the future, World AIDS Day’s mission is broader than ever. Sunday, December 1, 2019, is the day we come together to refocus our attention on our community’s crisis. AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is leading the way for awareness in South Florida.

together to work on eliminating stigma, judgment and shame around the issue of HIV, and to get tested, know our status and create supportive communities no matter what a person’s status.” Their mission has a small army helping a huge population. Six thousand employees help 1.3 million clients get life-saving care. “In South Florida alone, AHF currently provides services to over 15,000 individuals annually,” Imara told me. “Our commitment to continue to use innovative marketing and community engagement to provide critical education and awareness will continue in all communities. We will not just provide quality services in our health care and wellness centers, but will continue to make HIV and STD testing accessible, by bringing these services to communities across South Florida, and in high risk areas across the country.” Of course, the AIDS crisis has been with us for nearly 40 years now. Many people don’t know a time when it wasn’t a part of our lives and many don’t think of it as a crisis. Add to the fact that the internet allows many worthwhile causes to come to the forefront and get attention, it’s harder than ever to keep our

community and the world focused. “We are living in a time in history where all of us are overwhelmed with information coming from so many different communication sources. With the great news of advances in medicine that has resulted in people with HIV living with the virus, it has become more of a challenge to keep HIV and the devastating impact of HIV that still plagues our community as a priority issue.” But new challenges just means finding different solutions for different communities. “Through the use of innovative messaging via an array of marketing initiatives, events like the annual Florida AIDS Walk & Music Fest, World AIDS Day events and events and campaigns connected to the varied HIV awareness days, AHF has been successful in creatively keeping awareness around the epidemic. Through the incorporation of AHF's affinity groups, FLUX (focused on the transgendered community), LOUD (focused on the Hispanic/Latino community), Spark (focused on women), IMPULSE (focused on gay men) and BLACC (focused on the black American community), the organization is organically working in culturally sensitive ways with primary, high-risk populations to create education, awareness, testing, and prevention initiatives and messaging that resonates with the various targeted populations.”

BE A SMART SELLER! By Kip Reynolds

S

elling a property is not easy. There are hundreds of possible steps that could take place during every successful real estate transaction. Navigating the steps to closing takes experience, patience, and honesty. There are a myriad of options out there and as a smart seller it is highly important you make solid choices that ultimately bring you success. Did you ever have a smooth closing? A selling process that seemed to move along like a well oiled machine? Simply put, your agent did their job and earned their commission. Too often sellers are faced with so many headaches and hardships along the way that they are totally turned off by the prospect of ever using an agent. Experienced real estate agents eat, sleep, and breathe the market. Day in and day out they are working with buyers, sellers, lenders, attorneys, inspectors, contractors, municipalities, financial advisors, and so much more to serve their customers and clients to the best of their ability. A good agent understands the importance of valuing your home accurately and honestly. Many sellers want to price their property at a value that is unrealistic which deters potential buyers and can become a total disaster. If a home is overpriced it can

linger on the market and lose value dramatically. Listing a home at a competitive market price will bring in buyers and create a competitive market advantage. Pricing a home correctly maximizes demand, and in turn attracts multiple buyers and competition for the seller. The market is stocked full of information in the news and on the internet about home sales, prices, and mortgage rates. How do you know what’s going on in your market? Where do you turn? Do your homework! Interview at least three agents and determine the best fit for your situation. Get their license number and verify it on the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) website. Do your best to discern if the agent you hire is working for your best interests. Sellers need an agent that tells the truth, not just what they want to hear. Sellers simply cannot afford to fail and their choices at the start of the process are pivotal moments. Just as you would consult a doctor about a health issue, homeowners should always consult with a real estate agent about their housing needs. Today’s market is highly competitive. Having a true professional who’s been there before to guide you through the process is a vital step that will give you a huge advantage.

WHAT MAKES US CLIQUE

NANCY ROSS / BOB DREWS

Photo by Andy Armano | www.AndyArmano.com

By Andy Armano | www.AndyArmano.com

This series focuses on individuals who give to our community and make a positive impact on the lives of others. Often it is through our personal adversities that we discover who we are and transform the challenges into strengths. 10 | OutClique.com

N

ancy Ross is one of Fort Lauderdale’s most beloved drag queens. Known for her breezy martini-laced congeniality, Nancy is currently enjoying a popular monthly run at The Pub. In this profile, Nancy shares how her shows bring people together.

I look back now at pictures and I think how bad our makeup was then!

Bob Drews/Nancy Ross: For Bob? Or Nancy?

After that, Fancy and I would go out once in a while on Saturday night and dress up as Nancy and Fancy and just have fun. One night at Georgie's Alibi, we met Sharde Ross, who had a show there. And she said, "Well, why don't you come and be in my show sometime?" And it grew from there. I have always been a performer so it came naturally to me.

AA BD/NR

AA BD/NR

Nancy was born in the middle of Florida about 13 years ago. Paul, my husband, and I had a Christmas party in our back yard by our pool and my friend Lady Fancy and I did a little show. We had a great time and everybody thought it was amazing. The next year, we did another Christmas party. Of course, we did it bigger. You know, more lights and more costumes. But

I love how so many people come who have had backgrounds like mine and we share the spirit together. The regulars grew up in churches and they know the music. And you just see them, beer in hand, singing these gospel songs. Tears coming down a lot of their faces. Because, it was part of who they are, and always will be.

Well, for both!

Bob was born in Nebraska, many years ago. I came from a very religious background and I was always very involved in music and theater in the church. I was lucky because I travelled the world with my church and I was exposed to so many cultures and people.

So drag has really been just an extension of your life of performing?

Yes. And I have a special place in my heart for the gospel show because of my background. It started at Scandals as The Gospel Jubilee about ten years ago. It later moved to The Pub during the time Scandals Saloon was closed. It's currently being changed a little and will be called The Joyful Noise.

Andy Armano: Tell me a little about where you came from, what your background is.

But they didn’t feel welcome in their childhood churches. Now they are happy to be able to come to this show and be a part of it.

AA

I can just see that spirit in you of bringing people together. That joy, to me, is the real root of spirituality. It's interesting to see how, through your life, that has been a theme from your childhood to your drag.

BD/NR

At the end of the day, it's about the quality of life and our humanity. Yes, I believe in eternal life. And I'm sure people have different perceptions of what that means. Because, everyone has different religious upbringing, but I don't focus on that. Because on the whole, it's about just being good to each other and coming together.

AA

Where do you think that spirit of connecting emotionally with your audience came from? Was it something your parents taught you?

BD/NR

My mother was a huge influence, for sure. When I started singing, back in high school, and in church and sang, I often said to her, "If you're not crying in the audience, then I haven't done my job."

AA her?

Do you feel like there's a character to Nancy Ross? How would you describe

12 | OutClique.com

BD/NR

Well, everybody says when you get dressed up, it's like a light switch goes on. You come into this character when you put on the makeup and the outfits and the hair and all those things. Nancy is very outgoing. She is very friendly. She, in the gay bars, has no fear of talking to anybody. Where, Bob would never do that. And, because of her pole-dancing days, Nancy still does those crazy things like somersaults on the stage, or she'll bring up chairs and straddle the chair.

AA

So we can’t end the interview without talking about Paul. How did you meet your husband Paul?

BD/NR

Well, I was dating someone who went out of town for the holidays and encouraged Paul and me to spend New Year's together. We went for dinner prior to New Year's, just to get a little bit acquainted. When he took me home, and I said, "You want to come in for a few minutes?" And, well, he's never left. That's been almost 23 years ago. He’s still probably my biggest supporter. He will sometimes say that if I had been doing drag when we met, he wouldn’t have been with me because he wanted a man, but, seriously, he wants me to be happy and he is my biggest fan.

azz brunch on Sunday mornings, kicking it old school Sunday nights. Dueting on a Wednesday, disco and soul on a Tuesday. Even if you’re just an occasional visitor to the Alibi in Wilton Manors, it’s almost impossible not to be familiar with the big voice and an even bigger personality of LeNora Jaye. A fixture there for seven years and a music career that stretches back decades, she’s one of the strongest and most recognizable voices on the South Florida music scene. "Being able to do music, being musical in and of itself, there are times when I'm in awe of it,” she told me. “Since I've been here in South Florida I've transitioned from working in corporate to full time performer. Which is something I had dreamed of. A kind of far off 16 | OutClique.com

dream but I couldn't actually envision it. There are times now where I don't even recognize my own life. I've worked at a nine to five job my whole life, and now it's full time performing and I'm still in awe of it. It's huge and just the way that it's unfolded since I've been here is major." LeNora grew up in Brooklyn where she cut her chops on the city’s thriving indie music scene, and in her own home. "The love of music goes back so far and I inherited it from my parents. Being able to be a part of the music is inspiring and energizing,” she said. The road from NYC to South Florida has been long, and came with pit stops both physical and mental. She chilled in Atlanta for awhile, but it was not her scene. So eventually she got a gig on a cruise ship, which got her to our area very often. "Every

time the ship would port in Port Everglades or Miami, I was like I love the energy in South Florida. When I worked for the City of New York I'd vacation in Pompano. And I'd say to my friend how come I don't live here? She'd say, ‘Honey there are no jobs.’” But LeNora wasn’t having it. “I packed everything I owned in my car and came down to Florida." After arriving, the desire for a steady paycheck and health insurance led her away from music down here, but not for long. A friend told her to make a demo and send it to Alibi. "He made me do a video promo singing Patti LaBelle, Whitney Houston, Ella Fitzgerald, and all of them. I was like you're crazy, I'll just embarrass myself. But I did it and they contacted me and then a few months later I started with jazz brunch." From there more work came and she took the leap, quit her day job, and now does music full time. These days she’s doing Alibi’s Jazz Brunch every other Sunday, which has all of her favorite things. "Jazz is the first genre of music I loved. A culmination of all the fun things I like to do musically. There's brunch, there's mimosas, there's singing with nice jazz music."

and Ella Fitzgerald." That’s a lot of range and can be hard to master, but LeNora’s more than fine with that. "I did that purposefully. These are my icons, my favorite singers." And of all her shows, this is the one that resonates most in her heart. "Definitely the tribute shows. If they are asking for Patti LaBelle or Chaka Khan, they are hard core. I've got to sing my tail off. I'm singing everything in the original key and aiming to hit every single note that they are hitting. It's a tribute act. I'm not just singing the songs, I have to embody these huge soul legends. So I take that extremely seriously. That's the joy. I really pour 1000% into the tribute acts for sure." As for what’s next? LeNora told me that, in addition to keeping up all her appearances, she wants to get back in the game as a singer-songwriter. And when you listen to her sing, you know that’s an accomplishment just waiting to happen.

Then she hosts a retro show Sunday nights. "I pick a year. I say tonight it's 1984, give me your best eighties and we rock out for almost three hours." Tuesdays are a move and groove session that mixes up disco, soul, and motown. Plus she does a duet show with Antonio Edwards the second Wednesday of the month. And if that’s not enough of a varied vocal workout, she also does tribute shows as part of South Florida Legends. "I work with South Florida Legends. I am their tribute artist for Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan,

CHRIS LODGE NEW LEADERSHIP AT THE PUB By Steven O. Evans, PhD

T

Steven O. Evans: How did you get started with the Pub? Chris Lodge: I started bartending here a few years ago. And the manager position opened. My title is General Manager. My focus is on overseeing the entire bar, but I also focus on the marketing and advertising. We have so many weekly events going on here, that getting the word out is very important. And actually, it’s very fun. We have such a great crowd that comes here. We focus on being a community bar.

SOE CL

What sets the Pub apart from other clubs in South Florida?

Our team is really amazing. They all focus on customer service. We don’t just serve drinks. We care about each other and our customers. It’s not just work, but we have fun at what we do. Our shows also set us apart. We have some of the best drag shows in town. We are setting the bar (pun intended) for a new standard of entertainment and customer service. Our talent really helps to bring in the people. Our other talent is worth coming to see. It’s not just status quo. We also work a lot with the non-profit

he Pub is in the heart of Wilton Manors and sets itself apart not only as a community bar, but also one that is popular with our LGBTQA+ travelers. Not just a place where everybody knows your name, the Pub offers up great entertainment from our local drag queens like Starlet Sky and Nancy Ross, and out of towners like Ada Vox, the Synergy Twins, and Helena Handbasket. They also have their yummy breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus. Recently, Chris Lodge took over as General Manager. I sat down with Chris to chat about the Pub and get to know him a little bit better. organizations in town. We recently hosted the Underwear Auction for the Pet Project. I got to be one of the participants.

SOE

What kinds of things do you like to do in your free time when you’re not at the Pub?

CL

I’m 100% avid boater and I love being out on the water. My boyfriend and I love to go out on our boat whenever we get the chance. Living in South Florida gives us that unique opportunity to fish, scuba dive, relax, and even take the boat to the Bahamas when we get the chance.

SOE CL

What’s your background?

I grew up on a farm in southern New Jersey. We had an orchard, pigs, cows, sheep, and chickens on the farm. I loved making the apple cider every fall and collecting the eggs on the farm. It was a great way way to grow up. So, stop by the Pub for a bite to eat, a drink, or a show. You won’t be disappointed. The Pub is located at 2283 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors, FL 33305. WREATH OUT & TOUCH SOMEONE By John M. Hayden

F

orget decking your halls with boughs of holly. This year you can deck your halls, your walls, and your doors with imaginative, one-of-a-kind wreaths. The Pub on Wilton Drive is getting in the holiday spirit by holding its annual wreath auction. Now in its sixth year, The Pub is getting ready for the biggest event yet, with a wreath for just about any holiday mood.

“It ranges everything from campy to really fancy, to just middle of the road nice, decorative, classy wreaths,” Tim Barton told me. He’s the one who brought the idea home to The Pub after being inspired out west. “Seven years ago I moved back here from California. There was a bar out there that had a wreath auction that was very successful and raised money for charity.” When Tim first got back to South Florida, a similar event was already being held. But a year later, that bar closed and The Pub created its own Christmas miracle and revived the event. And the community all the better for it. The money raised goes to Kids In Distress, an agency dedicated to the prevention of child abuse and the treatment of abused and neglected children. “Around Christmas time, it raised tens of thousands of dollars with beautiful wreaths that people created. It is just a beautiful thing during the holiday season to have those creative, unique, decorated wreaths.” But it’s not all traditional greenery with holly and berries sprinkled in. This event can be naughty and nice. “There’s a little bit of campiness to some of them for sure,” Tim told me. “But for the most part I’d say they’re more the beauty and capturing the spirit of the season.” Over the years, he says there’s been more than 100 wreaths hit the auction. One that stands out in Tim’s mind comes from a South Florida legend. “Pompano Bill created this wreath

that was just huge. I’d say probably three feet across. And it was decorated in this beautiful ribbon. It was just elegant and beautiful.” Pompano Bill was known for documenting the community in photographs. One year, he took his artistic vision to a new level and created a wreath. “I remember it being a little off green, so I ended up calling it A Very Chartreuse Christmas.” But Tim says Bill’s legacy lived on beyond that Christmas. “After he passed away, the person who had bought that wreath wound up donating it to be auctioned again so we could raise more money for charity in his honor.” Now don’t feel like you have to pick out just one and then keep it forever. This event is the embodiment of the saying that it’s better to give than to receive. “There have been some people that have bought two, three wreaths. And others who have just donated money and a few others who have donated them back to be auctioned off again.” The 6th Annual Holiday Wreath Auction benefiting Kids In Distress goes down on December 5, 2019 the first Thursday of December. That gives you plenty of time to add it to your holiday decor. People donating wreaths can start dropping them off on that Monday, December 2nd. The Pub’s dedicated elves will then start displaying them so you can preview the wreaths and get a feel for what you want to bid on.

STAY ON DUVAL

LA CONCHA HOTEL & SPA IN KEY WEST, FL By Steven O. Evans, PhD Photos Courtesy of La Concha Hotel & Spa Key West

T

raveling to Key West? It’s one of the most unique places in Florida to visit. Less than four hours by car, it makes for a great weekend or weekday trip to get away. Coming in from out of state? There is no shortage of things to do, people to meet, clubs for drinking, or sights to see in this island of less than 4.2 square miles. Arthur Wood (my Associate Editor) and I make frequent trips to this other “Island City.” What’s there to do on your trip? Try the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory (www.KeyWestButterfly.com) for an up close and personal look at this world as you walk among hundreds of beautiful live butterflies and colorful birds. The Old Town Trolley Tours (www.TrolleyTours.com/KeyWest) is always a favorite. See the town in this open air, guided tour of the town. For the even more adventurous, try the Ghosts and Gravestones Tours (www.Trolleytours.com/ Key-West/Ghosts-Gravestones-Tour). Try not to be spooked by the local spooks. Ready for a gay day out on the ocean, the Blu Q (www. BluQKeyWest.com) is a day not to be missed.

36 | OutClique.com

Captain Steve and his crew will take you out to snorkel, paddle, sail, and view the magnificent Key West sunset. Some are “all male,” so be sure to check those dates on Steve’s online calendar. Looking for a place to eat? Locals and visitors both frequent Mangia Mangia (www.MangiaMangia.com). Enjoy a fantastic smorgasbord of their homemade pasta, with lots of glutenfree options. My personal favorites are the Seafood Scampi and the Fresh Sea Scallops over spinach fettuccine. And after dinner, go check out the boys (and the pool and hot tub out back) at Bourbon Street Pub (www.BourbonStPub.com). Never a dull night, the Pub is the hub of gay nightlife in Key West. Looking for that perfect place to stay? Book your time at the La Concha Hotel and Spa (www.LaConchaKeyWest.com). Located at 430 Duval Street, Key West, FL 33040, your room is literally right in the heart of the happenings of Key West. Arthur and I had an

amazing room with two queen beds, high ceilings, and full plantation shutters. Ours was nearly twice the size of an average hotel room. Venture down, and you can enjoy that perfect glass of wine at Wine O. Set in this blend of contemporary and turn of the century decor, this venue offers the perfect place to relax before heading out on the town. During my last trip down with Arthur, I enjoyed a glass of sparkling Lamberti Prosecco, while Arthur had his 94-points Pine Ridge Estates Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. On the “Bites” menu, I had the Grouper Picatta - parmesan and herb encrusted local grouper, lemon double cream, mashed potatoes, and crispy capers. The lemon was the perfect complement to the fresh fish and its accompanying breading. Arthur enjoyed the Petite Tender Medallions - seared medallions, boursin cheese, crispy onion with mashed potatoes, and demi glaze - served medium rare. Each of our selections was completed with sauteed asparagus and well presented with a purple and white edible orchid bloom. To tell the truth, we ended up splitting and sharing them both. With the large portions, they made for more than a meal. Having been raised on a cattle farm in Kentucky, I enjoyed the tender steak. The mashed potatoes reminded me of the ones my mother used to make back home. La Concha also boasts a relaxing pool. Arthur and I enjoyed our afternoons swimming and lounging in the part-sun and part-shade oasis. But, don’t be fooled. We still spent time at the outdoor bar with our laptops working on articles and ads for the next issue of OutClique. Our trip wasn’t all play and no work. So, call (305) 280-0208 or visit www.LaConchaKeyWest.com for more information on where to stay, eat, drink, and relax right on Duval Street. So, get out and enjoy Key West, FL. OutClique.com | 37

O

ur office receives numerous calls every year asking us to confirm property tax exemptions on the recent tax bills. The Property Appraiser’s Office does not set your tax rates or collect property taxes. We assess property for tax purposes and grant tax-saving exemptions to qualified individuals. The property tax bills are mailed by the Broward County Tax Collector’s Office. If you have questions regarding the payment of your tax bill, please contact their office at (954) 8314000 or visit their website at www.Broward.org/RecordsTaxesTreasury.

Where is my 2020 Homestead Exemption?

The tax bill you received this November from the Broward County Tax Collector is for the 2019 tax year. If you purchased your home in 2019 and the previous owners of your new home were entitled to and received Homestead Exemption or any other exemption on January 1, 2019, you may have inherited their exemptions on your 2019 property tax bill. Florida Statutes require these 2019 exemptions be removed for 2020 and the property be reassessed at the 2020 just value. This will often result in an increase in your 2020 property taxes so it is important you apply for 2020 Homestead Exemption and any other exemptions for which you may qualify. Your new 2020 Homestead Exemption will be reflected next year on all 2020 property records, notices, and tax bills. Any exemptions applied to the tax bill are totaled and shown in the third column “Exemptions” on the individual tax bill. If you have any questions regarding your Homestead Exemption or other tax-saving

exemptions, please contact our Customer Service Department at (954) 357-6830. Escrow Adjustments for 2019 Tax Bills

Our office often receives calls from property owners inquiring about their escrow and mortgage payments. The Property Appraiser’s Office does not handle anything related to the financing of property. If you make monthly escrow payments for your property taxes, your mortgage or escrow company typically does an escrow analysis after paying your annual tax bill. Any increases or decreases to your monthly payment will be determined and they will notify you directly usually after January 1, 2020. Should you have any questions about this, you should contact your mortgage company directly for assistance. Quarterly Installment Payments

If you pay your property taxes on the Tax Collector’s quarterly installment plan, any newly approved 2019 exemptions will be applied on the 3rd and 4th installment payment amounts. Any adjustments for 2019 are made on the final two quarterly 2019 installment payments. If my office can ever be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at (954) 357-6904 or by email at MartyKiar@BCPA.net. Take care, Marty Kiar

STABILITY FOR CHALLENGING TIMES THE BENEFITS OF PERMANENT LIFE INSURANCE Provided By Linda Buccilli, Northwestern Mutual

I

n volatile economic times like the ones we’ve seen recently, it is not surprising that people want something they can count on – a stable financial asset that will be there to help them meet important financial needs, no matter what. For many, that vehicle is permanent life insurance. Permanent life insurance (sometimes referred to as whole life insurance) is a unique financial tool. That’s because it can provide a foundation of protection for your entire life, no matter how long you live (assuming that premiums are paid to keep the policy in force). In contrast, term life, another popular type of insurance, provides coverage for a specific period of time, such as 10, 20, or 30 years. Keeping pace with changing needs The ability to provide protection for your family throughout your life can be a vital benefit, especially given the fact that life expectancies are on the rise in America. Permanent life insurance lasts for the rest of your life: it’s there when you need it. And because permanent life provides a guaranteed payout, you don’t have to worry about becoming uninsurable later in life. Regardless of your health, your family or your business is protected. Planning flexibility today...and tomorrow Equally important, permanent life insurance also provides cash value that is guaranteed to grow each year, tax deferred, regardless of what’s going on in the market. For example, you can borrow against your policy’s cash

value, generally on a tax-free basis, and use that money for a down payment on a home, to help pay for your child’s college education or to supplement your income in retirement. A cost effective alternative Many permanent life insurance policies also are eligible for dividends, which can add to your death benefit and any cash value, which grows tax deferred. These dividends, which are not guaranteed, can be used to pay all or part of your premiums, helping to reduce or even eliminate your out-of-pocket cost for coverage. They can also be used to increase your total death benefit over time without increasing your premiums. The power of partnership It’s important to look at more than just the premium. You’ll want to also consider the financial strength of the insurance company, including its claims-paying ability and track records of paying dividends. You’ll also want to understand what you’re buying. This is where a trained financial representative can help. A good financial representative will help you evaluate your goals and objectives, and help identify which products offer the most appropriate solution for your unique circumstances. And, equally important, a trusted financial representative will review your insurance policies with you every year to ensure it continues to meet our challenging needs.

CAN “A I” HELP YOU BECOME A BETTER INVESTOR?

F

or the past several years, artificial intelligence, or AI, has increasingly found a place in many walks of life. Almost certainly, you use some form of AI, whether it's your time on social media, your use of mobile banking, the navigation system you rely on for directions, or any of the many AI-driven applications relevant to your daily life. But AI has also become a significant part of the financial services industry. So, you might wonder if AI can help you become a better investor. To begin with, what is AI? Essentially, it's the ability of a computer program or machine to think or learn. Using complex algorithms (a set of rules, or steps), computers and machines can mimic many of the thought processes of human beings. But how can you use AI to invest? And should you? In the financial services world, many companies use AI to select investments for specific funds. On an individual level, you can work with an AI-powered “robo-advisor” to build an investment portfolio. These roboadvisors are typically quite affordable, and they generally follow proven investment principles, such as diversification, in making recommendations. Yet, you are more than just the sum of your answers to a robo-advisor’s online questionnaire. Investing is a highly personal matter, which means that, in the following areas, you may well benefit from some human intelligence and empathy: Understanding your risk tolerance. A robo advisor will ask you to identify your tolerance for risk - low, medium, high - and

we'll plug in your answers when constructing a portfolio. But only a human financial advisor, someone who truly knows you, your personality, your family situation, and your hopes for the future, can know how your sensitivity to risk might cause you to react to events such as sudden market declines. Armed with this knowledge, a financial adviser can talk through your options to help keep you on the road toward your goals. Answers to qualitative questions. A robo-advisor can provide you with many key data points: rates of return, projections of future accumulations, etc., but so can a personal financial advisor, who can also go beyond the numbers to help you answer qualitative, subjective questions: How can I save for college for my children and my own retirement at the same time? If I change jobs, should I leave my 401(k) in my former employer’s plan, move it to my new employer's plan, or roll it over to an IRA? What's the best way to guard my financial independence if I ever need some type of long-term care, such as an extended stay in a nursing home? Guidance for the “big picture.” Your investments are important, but they're also connected to other areas of your life, including your taxes and your estate plans. And while a financial advisor might not provide you with tax or legal advice, he or she may be able to connect you to other appropriate professionals and work with them to help you put together your “big picture.” That's not something a typical robo-advisor is equipped to do. Artificial intelligence will support many of your activities throughout your life. But when it comes to investing, a personal touch may never become obsolete.

ARE YOU THIRSTY?

By Michael A. Ferrara - Hair Stylist at HUSH Spa Photos Courtesy of Michael A. Ferrara

S

ummer may be behind us, and we may have quenched our thirst at one (or more) pride events, charity pool parties, or our very own Hunters Nightclub here in Wilton Manors. Coming into fall and winter, your hair may be getting a bit thirsty this time of year. Have no fear guys because I’m going to share with you my hairdresser’s secrets to keeping your hair looking fly all winter long! Conditioner I hear from my new clients they don’t use conditioner because it takes too much time or that it makes their hair harder to style. Here’s the deal, your hair is like a piece of fabric; it needs moisture in order to move more fluidly and behave exactly how you want it. If you haven’t been conditioning lately, it may take a couple of tries with styling, but soon you will see how much easier it is to manipulate your well conditioned hair into any style you want. I recommend a conditioner that feels thick and easily covers your hair without dripping, but also washes out leaving your hair soft and light, and not weighed down. 2-1 Shampoo and Conditioner Instead of just telling you what I think of these convenient yet ineffective combo bottles (oops, I think I just did), I’ll ask you a question instead. Would you wash and wax your car with the same product at the same time? I know . . . mind blown. Lube Quenches Thirst, too! Now I’m not talking about that pure-Swiss-J-

wetter-than-water silicone stuff in your glove compartment, or uh, your nightstand at home. Hair lube, or better known as hair “serum,” is another great way to not only condition dry and damaged hair, but also can be a great prestyling tool for casual looks, especially if you are getting to be more salt than pepper. When hair loses its pigment and turns gray, it also loses porosity which is your hair’s ability to retain moisture. Thus, making gray hair that much more unruly and difficult to control. Your answer is simple. Keep using conditioner, and especially for those mature men still sporting a nice head of hair, I would strongly recommend a serum, too. I have a hair lube coming out very soon appropriately named “Hair Lube” by my product line Blowmei. Look for it online or in one of the shops/salons in the Fort Lauderdale area. So I will leave you with another one of my analogies to really drive home the importance of conditioning your hair. Think about washing and drying your clothes with or without fabric softener. Do you want your hair stiff and unmanageable? Or soft, wrinkle free, and smelling great? I’m going with the latter.

If you have any questions or comments, I’d love to hear from you! Visit me at HUSH Spa & Barber or DM me on Instagram® @OfficialMAF. You can book an appointment with me at www.HushFL.com or check out my product line at www.Blowmei.com.

FRONT RUNNERS & WALKERS MARK 30TH YEAR WITH PARTY

Submitted by Front Runners & Walkers Fort Lauderdale Photo Courtesy of Front Runners and Walkers of Fort Lauderdale

F

ront Runners & Walkers Fort Lauderdale (FRWFL) is celebrating their 30th year in Broward County. To mark the occasion, they are hosting a free community celebration at the Stonewall Museum on Wilton Drive on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 from 7 to 9 PM. No RSVP is necessary to come enjoy wine, beer and hot hors d’oeuvres. Club memorabilia as well as video and photos will be displayed.

In 1974 Lavender U was formed in San Francisco to provide a setting for gays and lesbians to participate in track and field events especially running. That same year Patricia Neal Warren published The Front Runner, a groundbreaking novel about gay love in the sports world. In honor of this book Lavender U was renamed The San Francisco Front Runners. A signed, first edition of the book will be on display at the museum. In 1989, a group of local runners decided to band together to train for the New York City Marathon. From this small beginning the local chapter has recently serged to 200 members. Asked about this growth, club president Eric Runyan, said, “People get into running for its simplicity, no special skills or equipment are required. But they stick with Front Runners and their goals because we are a welcoming community.” The group not only works out together, but also socializes as a group as well. They eat together at a casual restaurant following each run/walk. Monthly social events run the gamut from trampoline park to museum visit. They welcome members of all abilities from runners who regularly place in competition to casual walkers who just want to stroll and chat with friends. The club offers both morning and evening workouts. Their evening run/walk meets near the football fields in Holiday Park,

Sundays at 6PM and Wednesdays at 7PM. Their Saturday morning run starts at the Pride Center in Wilton Manors at 7:30AM. A 4 or 6 mile run and a 3 mile walk are offered at each meetup. For more serious competitors, special monthly supplemental trainings are planned. This training might entail track work, sprints along the beach or on a bridge since those qualify as hills in Florida. Each month the club designates a “team race,” which runners participate in together. Occasionally these races involve a club road-trip to Sarasota, Key West or another local destination. Some members have recently enjoyed training for sprint triathlons together. Along the way members are offered encouragement for sticking to it. The club’s program for Workouts, Incentives & Participation (WIP) rewards both monthly mileage/steps and involvement in races and volunteering for the club. Those who want to try running should check out their annual free COUCH TO 5K training program which begins Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at 6:45PM at Holiday Park. Trainees are coached by FRWFL members who take them from short jogging and walking intervals to participation in the Publix A1A 5K race. For more information on the program or the club visit www.FRWFL.org, call (954) 775-2311, or on social media. OutClique.com | 69

GRATEFULNESS AS A LIFESTYLE

A

s a local clergyperson, I was invited to attend the Fort Lauderdale’s Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast on March 19, 2015. I was very excited as I had never before attended a “Mayor’s” Prayer Breakfast and this would be a new experience to represent our United Church of Christ Fort Lauderdale faith community in such a way.

I had seen in the promotional material for the breakfast that the guest speaker was Nick Vujicic who is known for being an international evangelist. I was looking forward to hearing about what I assumed were his “mission trips” and wondered what countries he had visited to help build water wells and such and to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Prayer Breakfast was a very large event for our city and was held in the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center. I arrived at 7:15AM and was immediately impressed with the layout of the room. The entire main floor of the Convention Center, what appeared the size of a football field, was filled tightly with tables bumped up against one another, and little walking room to navigate by. In the middle of this gigantic space was the stage with chairs around it, raised higher than the tables so everyone could see. The time came and the guest speaker, Nick Vujicic, was introduced. Then as the attendees watched, a man walked over to Nick, literally picked him up and placed him on the stage. Nick had no arms or legs. I had seen people with no arms or legs before, but it wasn’t what I expected to see at 7:30AM in a packed house at the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center and especially as the guest speaker known as an international evangelist. The thousands of guests in attendance watched as Nick greeted us. He moved himself enthusiastically around the stage so that he

could address the attendees sitting around on all 4 sides. He had no handicap. A quote from Nick: “Often people ask how I manage to be happy despite having no arms and no legs. The quick answer is that I have a choice. I can be angry about not having limbs, or I can be thankful that I have a purpose. I chose gratitude.” Nick shared with us about his ministerial life traveling the world over, his motivational speaking engagements, and also about his personal life with his wife and their child and then announced they were expecting child number two. His zest for life and attitude of gratitude for the blessings that surrounded him completely overshadowed any physical challenges that were in his life. His gratitude to God was and is the center of his life. Nick taught all the clergy and spiritual leaders who filled that convention hall that morning a valuable lesson about gratitude. We were changed forever! Our country celebrates “Thanksgiving” on the fourth Thursday of November every year. Nick invites us to live a “lifestyle” of thanksgiving where gratefulness is expressed through us every day. Gratefulness and gratitude are not to be given after challenges in our lives have passed, but during them. God did not give us challenges, but God can be found in our response. God is always with us. Happy Thanksgiving!

THE MAGIC PILL DOES EXIST By Fr. Jamie Forsythe

T

he world can be rough, life is not always easy and at times does not seem fair. We get sick, lose our jobs, relationships end, and those we love (both people and pets) die. Suffering is a part of our human experience: physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was some type of magical pill that would take all this suffering and pain away? Well there is, it is called gratitude. The root cause of all suffering is grief. Something that was important is now gone, or something that was wanted was not obtained. The focus is not on what is or what could be, but rather either what was or what should have been. We mourn our losses with either anger or sorrow, often turning the attention on ourselves. While grief is a natural response, left untreated it becomes debilitating. In the extreme case, life becomes a giant pity party of victimization: “Poor me,” “Why me,” “Life is nor fair,” and “How can I go on from here?” The remedy for grief is gratitude. That is the magic pill that can cure all of life’s ills. It does not change the situation, nor does it remove us from the situation. What is does is change how we view the situation and how we respond. Gratitude allows us to choose rather than react. Scripture calls us to give thanks to God in all things, knowing that God works all things for our good. Gratitude frees us from navel gazing so that we can move to hope, looking toward the future rather than dwelling in the past. Gratitude can sometimes be a bitter pill to swallow. It is hard to let go of feelings of loss and hurt. Sometimes it has to be taken with a spoonful of forgiveness, and must always be taken with a full glass of faith.

Just to be very clear, God neither causes nor inflicts suffering; life does that on its own. Our faith in whatever God we believe in is that the Divine will give us strength to overcome the suffering. All suffering, even physical, can help us grow to become more fully alive. It has been said that we learn more from our failures than our successes. It is also true that we grow more through the trials of life than the victories. Gratitude is the grace that encourages us to get up and move forward. Gratitude frees us from the chains which make our spirit a prisoner of the past, enabling us to become pioneers of the future. Gratitude allows us to see all the events and people of our past as preparations for the life ahead of us. A caterpillar does not mourn the loss of its cocoon, and a seed must die if it is to become a plant. Anderson Cooper did an interview with Stephen Colbert which is viewable on YouTube®. In it Colbert shares how he has processed the grief of the loss of his parents and the struggles of his career through the process of gratitude and hope. If you are struggling with depression and the loss of hope, with sadness and the pain life can bring, I encourage you to watch the video. Train yourself to be a champion of gratitude. Look for things for which to be grateful. Counter every thought of loss with an affirmation of gratitude. As we celebrate Thanksgiving this month, may you recognize more blessings than curses. May your heart be filled with thankfulness for all that you are. And if your spirit is troubled, take a pill of gratitude and call me in the morning.

Fr. Jamie is the pastor of Holy Angels National Catholic Church in Wilton Manors, FL. Holy Angels is an open and affirming community celebrating God’s love and forgiveness through the Catholic form of worship. All are welcome to celebrate with us regardless of any of the things society uses to differentiate us.

MAKING CONNECTIONS WITH THE SUNSHINE CATHEDRAL’S REV. ANNE ATWELL By John M. Hayden

T

he Sunshine Cathedral is a bright spot in the South Florida community. And one of its rays of light is Rev. Anne Atwell. A lifetime of trial, empathy and growth has brought her to where she is today, and our community is all the better for it. She is Sunshine’s Minister of Connections. It’s a title you may not have heard of before, and Anne’s as unique as the job. “It’s twofold,” she told me. “It’s matching our congregants to resources that they need in the community, and it’s connecting people in the community to what we have here at Sunshine Cathedral.” Since coming on full time at the cathedral five years ago, Anne has seen need after need and dedicated herself to filling voids others may not see. “One of the things I noticed when I first started in this role is there was a significant amount of grief and loss in the LGBTQ community, but it goes unexpressed.” From her work as a hospice chaplain intern, Anne knows the grief can be as recent as the loss of a spouse or even the ending of a long relationship, or a wound from decades ago that just won’t heal. Anne reminded me that there is no timeline for grief, and that some are still working through people they lost during the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. She saw this suffering and created a grief support group that caters to the LGBTQ community. While Sunshine Cathedral’s mission is to feed the soul, Rev. Anne is taking it upon herself to feed the body as well. “We have a food sharing program. What we do is we acquire food from different sources and then we share it with the community.” Food sharing? That’s a new term. But Anne says it’s a more dignified term. “It’s kind of different than a feeding program. It’s a food sharing. Food sharing helps retain the dignity of people which I think is really significant.” There are two parts to the program. The first is a ‘brown bag’ effort. Anne and her volunteers deliver non-perishable pantry items to people in need. Meals On Wheels is a great program,

but it only delivers Monday through Friday. The brown bags help cover the weekend gap. Then there is the food pantry. Every Wednesday from 11-2, people can come and pick out non-perishable items that fit their needs. In all, Anne told me these programs help nourish about 350 people every week. After growing up in a small town in western Pennsylvania, Anne arrived in South Florida twenty-three years ago. She was active in a church there. “I taught Sunday School, I sang in the choir, that kind of thing. So one of the first things I did when I got down here was to try and find a church. A church that would fit me. I didn’t want just the same old church I had in Pennsylvania. I wanted a church that would fit me. And that was one of the first things I did. And someone told me about Sunshine Cathedral.” Now Rev. Anne is finishing up her doctorate and still looking forward to each day and the surprises that will come with it. “Sometimes it’s heartbreaking and sometimes it’s wonderful. And you just ride the tide and you stop and say thank you.”

THE RESIDENCES AT EQUALITY PARK By Denny Patterson

W

ilton Manors will soon see a new affordable housing complex for senior adults, with a special focus on LGBTQ individuals – The Residences at Equality Park. According to the Pride Center’s CEO Robert Boo, this project has been in the works since 2012.

“Gay and Lesbian Elder Housing identified a desperate local need in Broward County for affordable housing,” he said. “The city of Wilton Manors then approached The Center about addressing local needs and our campus’ optimum location and resources to help meet those needs. In 2012, during our strategic planning process, the Board of Directors set a goal to evaluate the potential of a senior affordable housing project to be built on Equality Park. Over the next three and a half years, the Board did their due diligence. During the same time, we updated the master plan for our campus. We partnered with TSAO Design in a year-long process, including an extensive Charrette with 65 diverse community leaders to brainstorm and prioritize future campus uses. Charrette results were presented to the Board; top priorities set our direction. Results were announced and presented to the community. Senior affordable housing remains one of the largest, most significant projects identified both by Strategic Plan and Charrette process. The Center Board cultivated relationships with three top developers in the South Florida area during a multi-year evaluation and assessment process.” The Residences at Equality Park will have 48 units, and all units are 100 percent affordable housing for seniors 55+ earning less that 60 percent of the area’s median income, approximately $35,000 annually. Seventy percent of the units will be designated for

low-income seniors living with disabling conditions, such as a physical illnesses or disabilities due to complications from HIV/ AIDS. This will be South Florida’s first affordable housing project with customized supportive services for LGBTQ seniors. “The Center has partnered with Carrfour, Florida’s largest nonprofit affordable housing developer in the development of The Residences at Equality Park,” Boo said. “The Residences, coupled with The Center’s growing seniors programming, the largest LGBTQ weekly senior’s program nationwide, will give residents a permanent, safe place to live and support services they need. The Residences at Equality Park joins a growing national trend in which senior affordable housing projects are being built in conjunction with LGBTQ community center in major cities across the country, including Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago and Philadelphia.” The Residences will be a new, beautiful fourstory building located on Dixie Highway. The first floor will include a community room space and catering kitchen that will allow The Center to move its Active Aging program into the building. Over 200 people attend the program each week, and this new space will allow The Center to continue to grow its services to the community. OutClique.com | 81

According to Boo, this project would never have gotten to this point if they had not partnered with a non-profit developer such as Carrfour. “The tax credits were awarded back in 2016 prior to the elections,” he said. “With all the talk of tax reform, the tax credit market was put on hold until after the elections. Then when the actual tax credit reform went into effect, the value of the tax credits was considerably lower than the value back in 2016. Additionally, the company that sells the tax credits to corporations is also a nonprofit.” The Residences at Equality Park address the four most significant issues reported by local LGBTQ seniors from OurFund’s 2014 study – loneliness/social connections, housing, healthcare and financial planning. “The Equal Rights Center states that older LGBTQ people continue to be denied equal opportunity in housing,” Boo said. “In testing performed in states across the nation, researchers found that in Florida, 45 percent of LGBTQ testers received adverse differential treatment. Ten percent experienced two or more forms of less favorable treatment. When surveyed, LGBTQ seniors regularly list housing discrimination as a primary concern, including fear about mainstream senior housing options. Experiences of discrimination are linked with poor health outcomes, such as depression among both chronically ill LGBTQ older adults and their informal caregivers. Nearly four out of 10 LGBTQ older adults have contemplated suicide at some point during their lives. LGBTQ older adults are four times less likely to have children and twice as likely to live alone than heterosexuals. SAGE USA reports that 40 percent of older LGBTQ adults say their support networks have become smaller over time, and as a result, LGBTQ seniors are at risk of being without caregivers when they need it. Older adults who live alone are at serious risk of social isolation, which is linked to poor mental and physical health, cognitive impairment, premature chronic disease, and death. Because transgender people are more likely to age without children to help support 82 | OutClique.com

them and manage their care, and because they often experience dramatically lower incomes than either the general population or the LGBTQ population, access to affordable, supportive housing is problematic, especially for those with disabilities.” When the city of Fort Lauderdale issued an Affordable Housing and Economic Analysis four years ago, it showed that the fastest growing age group was between 50-69 years of age. Boo says that not only the Wilton Manors community, but also the South Florida community overall, is excited about this project. “For the most part, there has been great acceptance for The Residences to be built on our campus,” he said. “People have asked how we can ensure that everyone who lives here will be from the LGBTQ community. The Fair Housing Act prevents us from reverse discrimination, but we do promote this as South Florida’s first affordable housing project with customized supportive services for LGBTQ seniors.” Boo looks forward to officially cutting the ribbon and watching its first residents move in. Currently, there is not an official completion date, but continue to check for updates at www.PrideCenterFlorida.org.

IS THERE POOP IN MY POOL? By Rod Davis CEO BBB Serving Southeast Florida and the Caribbean

H

ave you ever come home from a long day at work on one of our hot and humid days and you just want to jump into your pool to relax and there it is - one of nature’s creatures decided to leave a gift in the pool. Every day we read about the explosion of iguanas as they move into our neighborhood, they leave droppings, eat some of our favorite plants and burrow in our yards. In addition to being gross, the droppings of iguanas can carry salmonella. So what is a homeowner to do? Homeowners may capture the iguanas, but it is against the law to take them elsewhere to release them. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (www.MyFWC.com) encourages removal of green iguanas from private properties by landowners. Since captured iguanas cannot be relocated and released, if you want to legally remove them from your property, the only solution is euthanasia consistent with regulations against animal

cruelty. Some legal options include decapitation, blunt force or euthanasia. Homeowners that trap iguanas on their property may be able to obtain euthanasia services from local exotic veterinarians, humane societies or animal control offices. If you are not capable of safely removing iguanas from your property, or you don’t want to deal with killing the animal, you may want to seek assistance from a professional trapper. You can find trappers to assist you at www.bbb.org/sefl. While iguanas are more visible than other pests, here in Southeast Florida we have other bugs and critters to alarm any homeowner. Termites love our hot and humid weather and rodents appreciate the easy access to food in our kitchens. Keeping a clean house, limiting cracks and points of entry into the home and keeping pet food in airtight containers can help deter pests, but no system is foolproof OutClique.com | 83

and partnering with a good pest management company can help you avoid unwanted guests in your home. Since you will be inviting the company into your home, it is important to find the right fit. Research Evaluate the pest control company by reading customer reviews and checking their business profile page on www.bbb.org/sefl. Find a business that is in line with your goals (e.g. uses green or less toxic products, provides sustainable solutions and helps you create a plan to limit future problems). If you have pets or children, ask the business what options exist to make sure products are as safe as possible. What steps will you have to follow when treatments are done before access to the home is safe for pets and children. Get Multiple Estimates It’s best to get at least three estimates from three different companies comparing apples to apples. If you don’t want to call each business one by one, try BBB Request-A-Quote (https://seflorida.app.bbb.org/connect) You can directly request a quote from accredited pest control companies in your service area. Understand the Contract Before signing on the dotted line, make sure

you know exactly what is written in the contract. Be sure to fully understand what sprays will be used, where the spray will be applied, the extent of the infestation, and the work necessary to solve the problem. Also, make sure you understand what the company will do if pests continue to come back after treatment, what the warranty entails, and if they have liability insurance to protect from any damage to your home or furnishings during treatment. Make sure everything promised verbally is written in the contract. Pest control services will add another cost to your budget, but they can help prevent bigger expenses resulting from termite damage and provide peace of mind that your home is more secure from pests and the diseases they carry. Beware High Pressure Sales Tactics/ Shady Practices Beware of companies that offer bargains that sound too good to be true, or will tell you they’ll spray your home for free so you can try them out, then make you sign a contract that actually is a one-year agreement. Also, beware of companies who are spraying your neighbor’s house, then immediately come to your house telling you all the bugs they had will make their way into your yard and house and you must spray now.

SOPHISTICATION, STYLE, & SERVICE

S

By John M. Hayden exy guys in stylish clothes in the service of others. It’s a trifecta of fabulousness and it’s going down on Thursday, December 5, 2019, at the Galleria Mall in Fort Lauderdale. Men of Style honors twelve local men and a cause close to their heart.

86 | OutClique.com

The guys will be styled by various sponsors and walk the runway with the right combination of altruism and attitude. Guests will be able to munch on food from some of the best local restaurants including Cucina Caruso Italian Market and NYY Steak (from Seminole Casino Coconut Creek), and wash it down with wines from places including Cooper’s Hawk. One of the men working the runway is the always stylish Roman Foster, owner of Southern Sands Design. For him, style is an ever-evolving way of life. “I have fun creating and evolving my own personal style,” he told me. “I like to be authentic with my choices, choosing clothes that speak to me rather than chasing after a current trend. I would consider my wardrobe to be experimental yet sleek.” Roman loves a classic look, and it’s a choice that goes back to his college days. “With a degree in English Literature, I tend to draw inspiration from the classics – gravitating towards dapper things like a sharp pair of trousers or vintage inspired patterns.” Roman grew up in western North Carolina in the shadow of the Appalachian mountains. But living in South Florida for so long has definitely helped evolve his look. “In part due to the ‘Miami Style’ influence in South Florida, my clothes have become more playful, sexy and urban. Lastly, I love to throw in an element of surprise, from anything to a western bolo, unique bracelet or over-the-top shoes.” When he walks at Men of Style, he’ll be dressed by one of Macy’s Brand Representatives, but that’s as much as he’s willing to share with us. You’ll just have to hit up the show to catch his looks for yourself. And he’s not there for himself, or our enjoyment, he’s there for a great organization, HANDY (Helping Abused Neglected Disadvantaged Youth). Their goal is to develop customized programs for the individual needs of a child

that takes them from early childhood to adulthood. The kids and young adults helped range in age from nine to 25, and include many who identify as LGBTQ. “I learned about HANDY after getting involved with fundraising for their yearly Prom, an adult fundraising gala focused on a Prom Court whose candidates campaign to raise money for HANDY,” Roman says. “I think they selected me to represent them in this year’s Men of Style due to my love for their organization and heartfelt appreciation for what they do.” And it’s what they do so well that impresses him most. “Program activities include things like tutoring, mentoring, social and recreational activities, and emergency needs assistance for food, clothing, and housing. They also do education workshops, life skills training and post secondary educational support,” Roman said. For Roman, style isn’t just something to wear, it’s a career and a way of life. The owner of Southern Sands Designs, on 26th Street in Wilton Manors, he sees style in everything from a century old canoe to a fallen tree. He curates his space with custom pieces, some made by his dad, who’s still back in North Carolina. When he’s not out at his shop, Roman hits the road to search out designers creating new and innovative designs. Southern Sands has a huge array of unique products. Even if your personal space is pretty well filled out, you may walk in and find that last, perfect thing you need to complete your look. This will be Roman’s first time in the Men of Style event, and he’s excited. “There is always great food and fun entertainment but my favorite part is the runway show. I’m super excited to be walking in it this year and representing such an awesome organization like HANDY.”

For more info and tickets to Men of Style, go to www.galleriamall-fl.com/men-of-style-2019/ You can check out Roman’s cool designs at www.SouthernSandsDesign.com. And to learn more about the great work HANDY does, go to www.HandyInc.org. OutClique.com | 87

STROKES WHEN EVERY MINUTE COUNTS UNTIL TREATMENT

I

f one of your loved ones was doubled over with chest pain, having what appears to be a heart attack, or you witnessing someone sustaining severe injuries, you would probably call 911 so they could receive medical attention as quickly as possible. What if you observed someone suddenly lose the ability to speak, move parts of his or her body or have trouble seeing? Would you react the same way? The answer is probably yes, if you recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Strokes occur when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. When a person begins suffering a stroke, brain cells in the immediate area begin to die because they stop receiving the oxygen and nutrients they need to function. This is why immediate medical attention is necessary. Stroke patients who receive treatment within the first hour of onset have the best chance of survival and prevention of disability. The window of opportunity to treat the majority of stroke patients is about three hours. After six hours, studies show that there may be little to no benefit. There are two major kinds of strokes. The most common is called an ischemic stroke, which is caused by a blood clot that blocks or plugs a blood vessel or artery in the brain. These types of strokes may be treated with a drug called t-PA, which dissolves blood clots, if patients receive care within the first three hours of the stroke. The second major type of stroke is a hemorrhagic stroke, which is caused by a blood vessel in the brain breaking and bleeding into the brain. Surgery to repair blood vessel

abnormalities may be performed to reduce future risk of this type of stroke. There is one other type of brain attack that may be a sign that an ischemic stroke is on the way. Transient ischemic attacks (TIA), or “mini-strokes,” happen when blood flow to the brain is temporarily blocked. The effects of TIAs may last only a few minutes or even an entire day, but this does not mean they should be ignored. TIAs may be predictors of strokes. It’s estimated that about 14 percent of TIA sufferers will have a stroke within a year of the TIA experience. Besides TIAs, there are other warning signs of a stroke. They include: Sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body Sudden confusion or trouble speaking or understanding speech Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance or coordination Sudden severe headache with no known cause Blurred or double vision, drowsiness, and nausea or vomiting Remember, not every stroke sufferer will have all of these signs and sometimes the symptoms will go away only to return again. Call 911 right away if you or anyone you know has one or more of these symptoms. The sooner medical treatment is given, the better the chances for survival and healing.

CHRISTMAS GREETINGS FROM JOHN WATERS By Gregg Shapiro John Waters appears at the Kravis Center on Monday, December 2, 2019, at 8PM. Go to www.Kravis.org or call (561) 832-7469 for more information. The Kravis Center is located at 701 Okeechobee Blvd, West Palm Beach, FL 33401. 112 | OutClique.com

T

here are almost too many words from which to choose to describe John Waters. Groundbreaking filmmaker, actor, writer, raconteur, and artist are just a few that come to mind. In December every year, Waters is a torchbearer and flag waver of Christmas in the way that only he can do it. His A John Waters Christmas show and tour is the stuff of legends and laughs, and the 2019 edition is sure to be no exception. Additionally, Waters’ recently published book, Mr. Know-It-All (FSG, 2019), an entertaining and informative memoir crossed with a howto, would also make for an ideal Christmas gift. I was given the honor of conducting the first interview John Waters did for the 2019 Christmas tour and I hope I lived up to the challenge. Gregg Shapiro: One of the first things I think of when it comes to you, John Waters, and Christmas, is Dawn Davenport’s Christmas meltdown in 1974 movie Female Trouble. Did you or anyone you know ever have a Christmas morning like that? John Waters: Actually, I know someone that was arrested Christmas morning and the tree was knocked over when the police came. That happened after I shot the scene. It wasn’t a fan or anything. Many people on the Christmas tour, through the years, have told me similar stories about the tree falling over on their mother. It happens a lot. Usually liquor or the dog is involved.

GS

How much of that scene in Female Trouble would you consider to be an inspiration for your annual A John Waters Christmas show?

JW

I don’t know that it has too much to do with it. I think it has more effect earlier, in the seventies and eighties, when I had my big Christmas party, that I still have. We purposely gave each other gifts that we would hate. We used to throw them out the window which I think was rather irresponsible

because I lived on the seventh floor [laughs]. I think it was more a case of, “How dare you give me this present!” I think it inspired that.

GS

Your 2004 album A John Waters Christmas is one of my all-time favorite holiday albums. Do you include any of the songs on the album in your holiday show of the same name?

JW

I think sometimes the theaters play it as people are coming in (from the lobby). The last time I did something publicly with it was when the mayor of Baltimore was Mayor (Martin) O’Malley, who later became the governor. Every year they have the big ceremony where they turn on the Christmas lights in the city. He and I came out to the song “Santa Claus is a Black Man” and we turned on the lights.

GS

Warm and snowless cities such as West Palm Beach, San Diego and Tucson are among the places you’re performing A John Waters Christmas Show. Are you the kind of person who needs to have snow on the ground to get into the Christmas spirit?

JW

No, not at all. I’ve had Christmas in foreign countries. I kind of like extreme weather. My favorite Christmas view used to be in L.A., on a hot day when it’s Christmas, in front of the Scientology Center which has Christmas lights around from the city [laughs]. It was such a bizarre sight and I always liked that.

GS

In your new book, Mr. Know-It-All, you make mention of your annual Christmas party (p. 84), as well as the A John Waters Christmas show (p.150). What’s the best way to let the readers know that tickets to A John Waters Christmas would make a perfect winter holiday gift?

JW

I’m right in the middle of rewriting the whole show. It’s almost completely different every year. I think it’s a good gift! If you have a first date for A John Waters OutClique.com | 113

Christmas, you’re either going to get married or they’re never going to speak to you again. It’s hit or miss. I’ve met many people that have told me that they got married after a first date of seeing one of my movies or being at the Christmas show. Now they come to the John Waters Summer Camp every year. I think it would be a romantic date.

GS

One of my favorite sections of Mr. Know-It-All is “I Got Rhythm,” in which you talk about your favorite music. I’m so glad you wrote about Buchanan and Goodman’s “Flying Saucer” 45 on Luniverse Records. I have a copy that was part of my mother’s record collection. Do you think the days of novelty recordings such as this are a thing of the past or could there be a revival?

JW

That was the first song that samples, really. It was such a huge influence on me because in “Flying Saucer” they told a story using other people’s lyrics without the original meaning. That’s exactly what I have done in the soundtrack to every one of my movies. I use snippets of songs as the narration, to build the story and spin it together better. There hasn’t been a great novelty record that I know of in a while. “Valley Girl” was a great one and there were later ones – “Baby’s Got Back.” But I can’t think of one recently that swept the nation. I challenge anybody, no matter what their musical taste is, to be able to identify correctly and talk about each one of the Top Ten on Billboard’s 200 chart. It’s so splintered! There’s no one genre. It used to be that everybody in the country could sing the Top Ten no matter what decade you’re in. I would say that would be impossible to do today. I think of all the novelty records that I wrote about (in Mr. Know-It-All) were about car accidents. You’d never have that today. All the teen suicide songs! Are you kidding me? That would be the most politically incorrect you could ever do. All the subjects about novelty records were about tragedy in some way.

GS 114 | OutClique.com

The closest might be the parody lyrics of “Weird” Al.

JW

Yes, but that was a long time ago. I’m trying to think of a current one. And if there is one, my assistants are in trouble because part of the young ones’ job is to be a youth spy and tell me things.

GS

I describe Mr. Know-It-All to my friends as a memoir crossed with a how to. What was the impetus for writing the book in this fashion?

JW

Because I wanted to share my negotiation skills that I had somehow developed over the last 50 years so that you, too, could fail upwards. You, too, can be messed up and triumph. You, too, can never have to get a real job.

GS

Finally, the music world recently lost one of the greats, Ric Ocasek of The Cars. Ric played a “beatnik cat” in 1988’s Hairspray. Do you have any memories of Ric that you’d like to share?

JW

I remember Ric! He was from Baltimore! He was a beatnik, probably. The first thing I ever wanted to be was a beatnik. We’re the same age. He was lovely. He came for the day. He got along very well with Pia Zadora. He came to the premiere (of Hairspray) in Baltimore, I remember, with (wife) Paulina (Porizkova). I’m not sure I have ever seen him since. I think when we had the big 30-year reunion (in 2018) of Hairspray at the Academy of Arts and Sciences in L.A., I tried to get him to come. He was very favorable about it and said to send his love to everybody, but he didn’t come. I’m not sure if he was ill for a long time or not at the end, but that could have been the reason. I was always a fan. He was a gentleman and a music legend. I’m really privileged that he was in that movie. I think people remember that scene well. SOUTH FLORIDA’S MISTRESS OF DISGUISE MARILYNN WICK By Denny Patterson

M

arilynn A. Wick has devoted her life to amassing the nation’s largest collection of original Broadway wardrobes. Hailing from a small town in western Pennsylvania, she learned early on the importance of hard work and forward thinking. This devotion has resulted in her becoming the Founder and CEO of Costume World, Inc. and the Managing Executive Producer of The Wick Theatre.

“Costume World started as a masquerade shop in 1977,” Wick said. “It has grown today to be the largest collection of American musical theatre wardrobes in the United States. We have seven fabulous stores around the country, and it has been an exciting adventure. I bought like 14 old costumes shop, renovated them, and made them into Costume World stores. I am here in South Florida and I have lived here since 1972. I started my company with five Santa Claus costumes when I was teaching my children how to sew one holiday. We loved it so much. We got more and more interested in it and started to collect, and now we have a 41,000 square foot facility here on Powerline Road in Pompano Beach.” Wick always had a love for theatre, but never thought she would become a costumer. “As a young child, I was in community theatre and did several productions in high school,” she said. “I loved it. However, my most enjoyable times I can remember with my family was when my mother would make everyone gifts for Christmas and she would get my sister and I to help sew and cut. One year, we made 23 bathrobes for everybody in the family. I had so much fun doing it, and the costume industry is so interesting. I always loved 118 | OutClique.com

history when I was younger, and it is really all about history when it comes to clothes. The periods and why we are wearing certain things at certain times. And then you cannot knock masquerade. I mean, you can be someone else and that’s fabulous.” It is Wick’s vision and energy that has brought prestigious clients to Costume World, including the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, Busch Gardens, Coca Cola, the U.S. Army Entertainment and several regional and Broadway productions. “They come into our facility and we make them someone or something else,” Wick said. “What is your wildest fantasy?” Costume World is the largest supplier of theatrical wardrobe in the country, and even supplies costumes for high school theatre productions. In 2005, Wick bought the oldest fashion house in the United States that was founded in 1868. “That turned a lot of things around for this company,” she said. “It was in New York City, and in that collection, we had exactly 67 original Broadway works. So, if you want to see Yul Brynner’s clothes from The King and I, it’s here. We also have the original costumes for 42nd Street, Titanic, The Producers, La

Cage aux Folles, The Music Man. You name it, it is probably here.” Wick and Costume World has only been at its current location on Powerline Road for about a year. “We want the public to come and see this place,” she said. “This is a brand-new facility for us. For years, we were on Federal Highway and our lease ran out, and of course Amazon has hit the market pretty bad with packaged goods. So, that really hurt us, but I am telling you, this place is worth coming to see. People walk in here and cannot believe it. It’s a large facility.” In April 2013, Wick acquired the former Caldwell Theatre Company space in north Boca Raton and resurrected the vacant property into the Wick Theatre and Costume Museum. It opened in September with its inaugural production of The Sound of Music. The production was heralded by the press and patrons alike, making the Wick Theatre South Florida professional theatre contender. “When I bought the collection in 2005, we had so many fabulous things,” Wick said. “So, we started a museum and we were in a Pompano warehouse. The city shut us down. They did not want us there because you do not have a right to assemble and that was what we were doing. We were giving tours. We were

on The Today Show with our tours and that was a thrilling experience for the company. Our goal is to preserve and educate people on our mission in the costuming business. So, when we got kicked out, we started looking for a new place. My youngest daughter is in real estate and she found the Caldwell Theatre that went under. It had been empty for about a year and a half. So, we decided that maybe we should have our museum in a theatre building and we then soon realized that the only way we could probably pay for everything is to put on productions. We bought the theatre and we have been putting on wonderful shows.” The Wick Theatre is currently in its seventh season. As for the museum, the current exhibit is about the Roaring Twenties. Guests are invited to see a display of vintage wardrobe and multimedia celebrating the ratification of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote, explore stunning gowns, coats, hats, and jewelry representing the Jazz Age and speakeasies of the 1920s, and marvel at Broadway costumes highlighting shows set in the Roaring Twenties including The Boyfriend, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and The Drowsy Chaperone. “The collection is amazing,” Wick said. “You can come take a tour of the museum, have lunch, be entertained, and go see a show.”

The 2019-2020 season includes spectacular shows such as Hot Shoe Shuffle (October 17 - November 10, 2019) The Music Man (November 29 - December 26, 2019) Evita (January 16 - February 23, 2020) Michael Walters in What a Character (February 4, 2020)

A Chorus Line (March 12 - April 12, 2020) Nunsense with Cindy Williams, formally Shirley of Laverne and Shirley (April 23 - May 17, 2020). For more information, a calendar of upcoming production, ticket prices, and tour dates, visit www.TheWick.org. OutClique.com | 119

CADY DOES!

AN INTERVIEW WITH CADY HUFFMAN By Gregg Shapiro

T

Photo Courtesy of Kay Renz PR

ony Award-winning actress/dancer/ singer Cady Huffman is a born storyteller. Therefore, it’s not surprising that she’s such a natural when it comes to performing her acclaimed one-woman shows. In her latest one, Tomboy, Showgirl, Huffman takes a “gender be damned” approach that is sure to appeal to LGBTQ audiences, as well others from all walks of life. I had the privilege of speaking with Cady, a Tony-nominee for Will Rogers Follies and a Tony recipient for The Producers shortly before she came to South Florida for her show. Cady Huffman brings her cabaret show, Tomboy, Showgirl, to The Wick Theatre, 7901 N. Federal Highway, Boca Raton on November 16, 2019.

Gregg Shapiro: I recently interviewed your friend and collaborator Will Nunziata, who directed you in Miss Peggy Lee: In Her Own Words and Music and will be directing you in Over Here!. He had many wonderful things to say about you, including crediting you for opening the door to his directing career, how much he adores you as a collaborator, and describing you as “one of the kindest, most sincere, loyal people you will ever meet on the planet.” Cady Huffman: Awww!

GS CH

What makes your working relationship with Will so special? Complete control [laughs]! No! I met Will when he was very young. He and

120 | OutClique.com

his (identical twin) brother (Anthony) have been performers for a very long time. I met them when they were fresh out of college. It was about 10 years later when I reconnected and heard that he wanted to be a director and [laughs] sort of forced him to work with me for no money. Will is hugely enthusiastic, always wants to learn and is not committed to having his way or no way. He’s a true collaborator. He’s sort of an old-fashioned guy that way in theater. For a long time, theater was a big handshake business. It’s gotten much more (corporate) now that Disney and big business is in it. He’s a handshake kind of guy and I can trust him and he’s proven that I can trust him. We have gotten to be extremely close as friends and talk openly and honestly about what’s going on. He’s super-talented. We’ve worked together many times now and he

grows every time. It’s extraordinary to watch him grow.

GS CH

When did you know that the theater was your calling?

[Laughs] I don’t remember not knowing it. I grew up not knowing any better. I grew up doing it. I was passionate about singing and dancing from an early age, before anybody told me what the hell anything is. I sang and danced around the house and begged my mother for lessons. Eventually, when she found the right ballet teacher, she let me take ballet at seven. At nine, a good vocal instructor heard me singing and said, “Let me train her.” I loved it. I love the hard work of it. I love how it gets me out of myself. You have to love being in a darkened theater twelve hours a day [laughs]. That excites me! Being around other creative people.

GS

You are bringing your lauded cabaret show, Tomboy, Showgirl, which is described as “exploring the duality of life, gender roles, and the juxtapositions of youth and experience, comedy and poignancy,” as well as your “weariness and genuine love of show business.” What was involved in putting together the show?

CH

I’ve done several one-woman shows before this. I write them myself. For the first one, I was terrified, so nervous. I was terrified again for the second one [laughs]. My goal is to get more and more personal. Bring me to my audience. Eugene Gwozdz is my musical director. He’s an orchestra in ten fingers and he’s hilarious. I’ve always felt like I don’t look like the way I feel. It always amazes me that I play these big, glamorous showgirls, because I just want to play softball or build a house or dig a hole. I love that stuff. I think I succeed at these hyper-feminine roles because I can

really fall in love with that woman. I can see a side of me that I don’t normally explore and make her full and well-rounded. I would never play dumb blonde. Ulla spoke at least three languages. She can sing and dance! It’s a beautiful, wonderful challenge to explore that other side of me.

GS

Do you think there might be a recording of this show in the works or perhaps a different Cady Huffman album somewhere down the line?

CH

I would love to do an album. I have been talking to somebody about that. I love to be funny. I love to make people laugh and cry. So, maybe, yeah. We’re thinking about what that album might be. I’m not a standards singer. Not someone you listen to and go, “Oh, that voice!” The voice is what it is. It’s pliable and flexible and does lots of acrobatics and weird stuff. I call myself a character singer. The songs I sing in shows are usually not the pretty ones [laughs]. I wish I could sing some pretty songs. But, yes, I would love to do an album with what excites me about Broadway and music.

GS

Are there any other upcoming film, TV or theater projects that you’d like to tell the readers about?

CH

We’re starting to shoot season two of After Forever. Lisa comes back! I have my own web series called Cady Did, which, fingers crossed, will come out some time soon. We’re working on getting the rights to the Peggy Lee show that I do and I will hopefully be able to perform that in Florida and other places. Get onto my social media and you’ll see that I’m always doing something.

A DATE NIGHT SO WRONG IT’S HILARIOUSLY RIGHT By John M. Hayden

A

n ex goes from dating women to marrying a man. Someone’s coming over for dinner and you don’t know if it’s a date. A relative from out of town pops in. Everything and everybody is converging on Anna in Lipstick. A new season at Island City Stage opens with an all new production from author Lane Stanley. He took time to tell OutClique about the comedy with Anna at the center of the storm. “Anna is an out and proud lesbian, and her friend Kelly from yoga is coming over for dinner. Anna can't tell whether Kelly is gay, so she has no idea whether this is a date, and therefore no idea how to act.” But that may be the least of Anna’s issues. “Between her rambunctious best friend, an ex who shows up in a wedding dress, a no-nonsense landlord, an overzealous visiting family member/tourist, and a slew of men from the dating app Bandit, Anna can't get a moment's peace while she tries to navigate her dinner with Kelly.” Now that’s a dinner party I’d love to attend, and we all can. A farce comedy featuring the gay community is rare, especially outside of New York City and London. It’s especially rare to find one featuring lesbians, and that’s one of the things that motivated Lane to write Lipstick. “We need more queer comedies in this world, so my first intention was to write one. As beautiful a movie as Brokeback Mountain is, as a queer person with a dead fiancee, it doesn't give me a lot of hope for my life.” So it was a challenge not only to represent, but also avoid cliché. “I wanted to write something that was a specifically queer experience, without telling a coming out story and that's how I arrived at this issue of women coming over to hang out as friends vs. as a date. I think that's something queer folks experience much more than straight folks. The play is a huge celebration of queerness, of fluidity and bisexuality especially, and of embracing queer culture and stereotypes without being trapped by them.”

It’s not uncommon for playwrights to develop characters from people they know in real life. That’s the case here, but Lane says no one in the audience will see themselves. “My girlfriend at the time definitely knew the play was about her. She had never been in a queer relationship before we started dating, so she was definitely my Kelly. But we've long since broken up, so I don't think she'll be in the audience!” Lipstick comes at a time of transition for Lane. He began the project as Alice, and he says this time in his life definitely influences his art. “I’ve been thinking a lot about how presenting more masculine and bearing a masculine name affects the work I've done on gender, sexuality, and the patriarchy. Lipstick is a celebration of queer womanhood, and that might make a little more sense to audiences coming from someone named Alice.” And getting to this moment has been more than a decade in the making. “I have tried on just about every type of queerness since coming out as bisexual in 2006 to starting HRT in 2019, and I think that gives me a very specific personal experience, but also a very broad experience of all the different ways someone can be queer.” With opening night just a couple weeks away, stress and jitters go hand-in-hand. But by the time the big night rolls around, Lane’s got to be ready to let go and trust his team. “As a director and writer, it can be hard to sit in the audience and know you have no power over what's about to happen. If something goes wrong, you are no longer the person who can fix it - that's in the hands of the performers, stage manager, and crew. But, that's also a blessing when you have amazing collaborators!” Once the cast takes its bows and the house lights come up, Land’s favorite part of the night begins. Definitely talking with audiences afterwards. I love hearing what stood out to people, and especially if no one knows what you look like, you can overhear a lot of honest opinions as folks talk to each other and leave the theater.”

The show opens on Thursday, November 14, 2019 and runs through December 15, 2019. For tickets and more information, go to www.IslandCityStage.org/Lipstick. 136 | OutClique.com

ECUADOR

A HIDDEN GEM FOR GAY TRAVELERS

Time to add this breathtaking, safe, and uncomplicated destination to your travel bucket list!

E

cuador has been for many years one of the world’s most amazing destinations for travelers from all over the globe. It’s beauty, history, culture and the Galapagos Islands have made Ecuador one of the top destinations in the world. However, it remains unknown or on the back burner for most gay men, who feel safer with more traditional travel choices like gay cruises or events in different cities of the United States and Europe. Juan Maldonado, a dualcitizen of the U.S. and Ecuador, and a proud resident of Wilton Manors (Florida’s “gay mecca”), is determined to change this by promoting his home country as a fabulous destination for gay travelers that is both safe and uncomplicated. Even though most of Latin America is traditionally conservative, Ecuador is one of only five countries in the world whose constitution provides citizens equal rights regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity since 1998. Ecuador is also one of the few countries in the world to have banned conversion therapy. Under the 2016 Gender Identity Law, transgender people may change their legal gender solely based on self-determination, without undergoing surgery. As of July 2019, same-sex marriage is legal.

Aside from its LGBTQ rights record, Ecuador is simply an uncomplicated choice for North American gay travelers for several reasons. For example, its capital, Quito, is less than 4 hours away from Florida (which is about the same as flying to Denver). No visa or vaccinations are required for Americans and Canadians, and most Ecuadorians speak English. The official currency is the U.S. Dollar, so there’s no need to worry about exchanging money or losing value. In fact, dollars go a long way in Ecuador, as much as 3 times, due to the very low costs of labor, food, gas, transportation, rent, etc. For these reasons and the fantastic yearround weather in Quito and other cities on the Andes Mountains, Ecuador has been recognized for many years as a top destination for retirement and boasts a growing number of gay expats from North America. For the seventh year in a row, Quito has won the title of “Leader Destination in South America” in the World Travel Awards (the Oscars of tourism), and the Galapagos have been for decades one of the most coveted natural destinations in the world. Prestigious publications like Lonely Planet, Condé Nast, Forbes, and websites like TripAdvisor, among many others, have recognized Ecuador’s unmatched beauty and potential.

Ecuador Gay Travel, LLC is the only all-gay tour operator with offices in both Ft. Lauderdale and Ecuador. The company offers premium travel experiences to and from Quito, the Galapagos Islands and Fort Lauderdale, with all-inclusive tours and itineraries designed for and by gay men. Its bi-national team has a combined experience of 35 years in the tourism industry in Ecuador and Florida.
