OPEN DOOR. OPEN MIND.

Give Thanks Dear Readers, Happy November. Thanksgiving is here. What are you thankful for? I love seeing our beautiful Florida sunshine and beaches. A friend’s smile? What about a unique piece of art? Is there a special card on your desk? (I have one from my mom for Halloween that says, “Wicked.”) I love the smell of my favorite cologne (Obsession by Calvin Klein). The crisp air of a totally clean house? How about that “new car smell.” Right now, my house is filled with the aroma of a fresh pot of coffee. What do you hear? That favorite DJ at the Eagle? The warm chatter of friends at Rosie’s? Beethoven at the South Florida Symphony Orchestra? LeNora Jaye at Alibi? Or Miss Bouvee singing one of your favorite Disney songs or Broadway show tunes?

Friends and Client Appreication Dinner at the Home of Commissioner Don D'Arminio and Marc Martorana

Marc and Don are Doing It…for the Community It’s been nearly 365 days since Don D’Arminio took office with a promise to ‘Get it Done’. With his inaugural year nearly complete, Wilton Manors’ newest city commissioner is busier than ever but enjoying every minute. “I'm loving it,” he says. D’Arminio is quick to give his campaign manager, Bene Clement-Smith as well as his spouse of 27 years, Marc Martorana, much of the credit for helping him win. Martorana was the one responsible for coining the catchy campaign slogan that dotted the Drive last November. “It's really difficult for someone that's not an incumbent to get elected,” says D’Arminio, “it was a challenge, but Marc and I work well together as a team.”

“I gotta’ tell you”, interjects Martorana, “people remember that slogan to this day. They'll see me and they'll say, ‘Don Gets It Done’, because we did get it done and we're continuing to get it done every day.” Not one to ever rest on his laurels, Martorana has maintained the couples’ fundraising initiatives while his other half serves the constituents. “I've also been very busy," he says. The long-time residents are known for hosting events for local non-profits. “We donate our home, our food, our bar, our help”, says Martorana, “We’ve raised thousands of dollars and it’s free to every organization we invite into our home.”

The charitable duo has hosted nearly every non-profit including the South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), Equality Florida, the National LGBTQ Task Force, Plays of Wilton, Island City Stage, OUTshine Film Festival, the Stonewall National Museum & Archives, the World AIDS Museum, The Pet Project, and SunServe. “Now until the end of the year, Don and I will be hosting five organizations at our home,” says Martorana while their rescue pup, Ollie, bestows wet kisses on his arm. “I went on to be the chair of Sunserve’s gala, and I believe I will be the chair again for the March 2024 Gala,” he adds enthusiastically. “We have a great city that offers incredible services”, says D’Arminio, “and a lot of our LGBTQ community wants to be here.” Perhaps this is why developers are coming out in full force hoping to develop some of the outdated buildings on Andrews, which the rookie commissioner is all for. “Our city is in a different place today than it was twenty years ago,” says D’Arminio. “We no longer have to give away our city, the developers are coming to us wanting to build here.” But don’t expect D’Arminio to let dollar signs dictate his vote. “I want to make sure that our city is sustainable,” says D’Arminio, a retired tax professional. “As a former accountant, when I review the budget, I understand what I'm looking at.” D’Arminio whole-heartedly supports tourism and believes that building the first large-scale hotel in Wilton Manors will bring even more visitors--and tax dollars-to the city. “People tend to spend money where they’re staying, so a hotel will have a huge economic impact on Wilton Manors small businesses.” For many, D’Arminio’s rookie status is a breath of fresh air. “I've never worked for the government so, I just come from a different mindset,” he says. “I'm everything but a career politician, it's hard for me to even say I'm a politician”, he pauses then says thoughtfully, “I guess I am, but I'm a resident first and I'm here for the residents.” Author: Jessica Graves | Photos Courtesy of SRL Media - Marc and Don

extraordinary company was founded on the idea of connecting people and celebrating all of life’s special moments. We want to be the ultimate choice for any kind of celebration travel, and let’s be honest, who can say no to Jennifer?” Sailors can activate the new Jen A.I. tool by visiting VirginVoyages.com. John Duff

Is Turning the Tables and ‘Straight-Baiting’ In ‘Somebody’s Daughter’ “Somebody’s Daughter,” the latest music video from out artist and social media personality John Duff, is about a phenomenon many young people, gay and straight, face today. They want love, but then devote all their energy to heated one-night stands instead of relationships with substance.

a gay man simply pretending to be straight for the sake of baiting audiences into desiring him.

In the visual, directed by Shawn Adeli, Duff pokes fun at artists who are supposedly “queer-baiting” by turning the tables and doing some “straight-baiting” of his own. He stars opposite Nellie Salisbury, who appears to be the object of his desire throughout the video, but makes it clear that he is

Denny Patterson: John, can you begin by telling us how the concept and idea for “Somebody’s Daughter” came to fruition? John Duff: It’s kind of crazy. I made an album in 2020 that never came out, and I worked on it for years, and that led

OutClique had the opportunity to catch up with Duff and talk more about “Somebody’s Daughter,” as well as the issues of gay-baiting, the passion behind his artistry, and more.

us into this sort of Kroener classic throwback thing. We were supposed to shoot a video for one of the songs from that record, and there were supposed to be eight costumes made, four for me and four for the girl in the video. However, the costume designer ghosted three days before the shoot. In a panic, I called my friends and said we need to write another song based on a video concept that I had just come up with. There were no clothes, so it was basically a porn (laughs). But that's how “Somebody's Daughter” was written. I knew what the location was, I knew who was going to be in the video, and I knew what we had to work with. We wrote a new song based on the video. Denny Patterson: What do you ultimately hope they take away from “Somebody's Daughter?” John Duff: I hope they enjoy it. I would just like to offer two minutes and 45 seconds of escapism for someone. If this song makes them feel good, that’s great. If the video

entertains them, makes them laugh, or turns them on, that’s great. When we talk about performers and artists calling into question the respectability of other people, at the end of the day, my job is to help someone through their day. Denny Patterson: How would you say “Somebody's Daughter” showcases your evolution as a musical artist? John Duff: It shows a lot of vocal restraint, and as a song, if you take it away from the production, it's a fantastic song that could have existed at any time in history. It's all about the polish for me. I can be a very unkempt human being, but my taste in music is pretty refined and very broad. I hope this is the gateway into the direction that I'm going, and you'll see that we're going even more dramatic! Stay up-to-date and connect with Duff by following him on Facebook and Instagram @iamjohnduff.

New

Mr. Ramrod Titleholder It was a night of brotherhood and triumph as Scott Jordan was proclaimed Mr. Ramrod 2024. It is the culmination of a lifetime of dedication to the leather community. But it started with the leather community’s dedication to him. “For me, it’s about support and mentorship,” he told OutClique. “I was 18 years old and on the streets of New York. Leathermen helped me and mentored me all through my life.” Jordan has been a member of leather communities in several major cities and has found a welcoming home at Ramrod. And in the tradition of Mr. Ramrod, each class of contestants forms a support system for the winner and each other. “Community, support, and bonding is stressed throughout these types of events,” former Mr. Ramrod Elimination Onyx said. “It is put into action as the weekend begins. You get to know each other, share stories, uplift each other because it really is a vulnerable and emotional ride. I think this class fell right in line with that.” The weekend started on Saturday night with the monthly Pig Dance. Contestants curated gift baskets then set out to sell raffle tickets. The competition started early on Sunday when judges interviewed the contestants. That night contestants put it all on the line in categories including Pecs and Personality, Jock Strap/Fantasy Scene, and Leather Image. They had an extremely helpful mentor to guide them through the contest, Mr. Ramrod 2023. James Tyrcha ended his reign surrounded by other former titleholders. “This year's Mr. Ramrod class was extraordinary,” he said. “All four of them brought something very special and unique to all the judges. The common thing between all four of them is fellowship and community growth.”

As the titleholder, Jordan will represent Ramrod at International Mister Leather (IML) this spring. He will also get to spotlight the issue closest to him. “My platform is mental health due to mental health issues. I’m finally well enough to serve the community at age 62.” He went to his first leather contest when he was only 18. He credits the NYC leather community for helping him throughout his life. As Mr. Ramrod, he shines a light at the intersection of the leather community and mental health. “The intersection is about health, support, and getting the word out to people who might be in need.” Jordan will have the support of Ramrod’s former titleholders. Elimination says it’s about forming a family. “We welcome him to our Brotherhood. We will do all we can on the road leading up to ensure he is mentally, socially, and physically ready to take the stage that will house International Leather humans from all across the globe.” Tyrcha is now the newest member of Mr. Ramrod elder statesmen. “My advice to him is to listen to the community. Hear everyone and be the one to take action for them so we can grow and become stronger, and no one will be left behind! Scott will be writing his own journey this year, and I am very excited for him!”

2023 Holiday Shopping Tips The 2023 holiday shopping season promises to be an unpredictable one. High inflation rates and increased prices of consumer goods are already throwing a wrench into holiday shopping. Electronics, toys, and other products will be (or already are) in short supply, and retailers are struggling to staff up as the shopping season nears. Product shortages and increased online shopping will likely result in more online purchase scams this year. These scams accounted for nearly a third of all scams reported to BBB Scam Tracker in 2022. Shortages are likely to make purchase scams even more common as desperate shoppers turn to shady websites in hopes of finding this year’s must-have gift. BBB recommends the following tips to “Shop Safe, Shop Smart” this holiday season: ● Research before you buy. Use BBB.org and shopper reviews to do your homework before paying. ● If the deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. The price was the top motivating factor for people who made a purchase and lost money so look for trusted businesses for your purchases. ● Beware of fake websites: Check the URL, watch for bad grammar, research the age of the domain, and search for contact information. See BBB’s tips for recognizing and avoiding fake websites: bbb.org/ all/spot-a-scam/how-to-identify-a-fake-website ● Professional photos do not mean it’s a real offer. Respondents reported that website photos motivated them to engage with scammers, especially for pets/ pet supplies, clothing/accessories, and vehicles.

● Make sure the website is secure. Look for the “HTTPS” in the URL (the extra s is for “secure”) and a small lock icon on the address bar. Never enter payment or personal information into a website with only “HTTP” – it is NOT secure. ● Be careful purchasing sought-after products, especially during the holiday season. The risk of online purchase scams rises during the holidays because more people are making online purchases, and scammers offer the most popular products for the season at great prices. ● Beware of making quick purchases while scrolling through social media. Scammers have access to tools they need to learn about your buying behaviors, offering exactly what you want at enticingly low prices. ● Look for the BBB seal. BBB Accredited Businesses pledge to uphold the BBB Standards for Trust and to deal fairly with consumers. If a business displays a BBB seal, verify it by going to BBB.org. ● Use secure and traceable transactions and payment methods. According to BBB's research, those who paid with a credit card were less likely to lose money. ● Shipment tracking information can be faked. Look closely to make sure it is a legitimate business. Avoid clicking on the tracking link; go to the 'shipper's website and type in the code to see if it is real. ● Count on BBB to help you “Shop Safe, Shop Smart.” More tips are available at BBB.org/holiday.

SMART Ride Hits the Road It’s hard for riders, crew, and volunteers to distinguish between sweat and tears. Ever since the SMART Ride announced that this month’s ride would be the last, emotions have been high. But they’re using the moment as fuel for one last ride. The SMART Ride is an annual, 165 mile bike ride between Miami and Key West. It’s the largest ride of its kind that turns over 100% of proceeds back to the HIV/AIDS community. Nearly $15m has been raised over the first 19 rides, and the most recent trips have averaged $1m. But before they ride off into the sunset, they hope to go out with a bang, raising $2m for its six benefitting agencies. The community is behind them. The Key West Mile Markers team says they raised more than $43,000 in the weeks immediately following the announcement. They, like many teams, spend all year training and holding

creative fundraisers, such as the Tour de Keys, cocktail competitions, raffles, karaoke, and more. But those are more than fundraisers for a great cause. They’re the building blocks of a great community. From the board of directors to riders to crew to volunteers, SMART Ride is a year-round labor of love. Many joke that the ride is Friday and Saturday, you drive back on Sunday, then start fundraising and training on Monday. You see evidence of the community on social media, where training videos and fundraising appeals abound. But you can’t truly appreciate it until you’re in it. Whether it’s running a fabulous fundraiser on a Friday night after a long week of work, or getting up for a 7am training ride before it gets too hot. It’s hard on everyone, but they are in it together. “It has changed my life for the better in immeasurable ways,” Donald Gene Dotzauer said. “It is among the best things that has ever happened to me.”

Chris Caputo is, arguably, Wilton Manors’ most avid cyclist. This will be his twelfth ride and his passion for the organization and its people is not deterred. “While this year marks the last opportunity to raise funds in this unique format, the impact of your contributions will be everlasting. The legacy of the SMART Ride will be a testament to what a community can achieve when it comes together for a noble cause.” Changing Times Over the course of its existence, The SMART Ride has seen the world change. HIV prevention and maintenance drugs are suppressing new infections. HIV service organizations, like the ones that benefit from SMART Ride, have higher profiles and more sophisticated fundraising strategies. While 10% is held back to help groups in emergencies,

the rest of the money is donated between six Florida HIV/ AIDS service organizations. They are Broward House, Compass, Pridelines, AH Monroe, Miracle of Love, and Empath Epic Health. It’s a point of pride for founder Glen Weinzimer that the groups have come into their own. He believes they will carry on without the SMART Ride umbrella. Indeed, several of the organizations told OutClique they will continue with their epic fundraisers and are brainstorming new ones. It’s been thirty years since Weinzimer was first diagnosed HIV+ and was close to death several times. But he fought. First, he fought for his life. Then he fought for the lives of others. There is no doubt that the LGBTQIA+ community is a stronger place because of Glen Weinzimer.

Care Resource Celebrates 40th Anniversary Care Resource Community Health Center Inc. celebrated its 40-year anniversary on Friday, Sept. 29, 2023, at its Midtown Miami Health Center. Community representatives, healthcare partners, and local officials were in attendance to celebrate the organization’s history and achievements.

The reception included a ribbon-cutting, welcome ceremony and memorial wall/timeline dedication. Jonathan Welsh, associate director of development and communications, kicked off the ceremony with an inspiring speech highlighting the accomplishments of

Care Resource within the community. After that, guests were invited to view the memorial wall and timeline dedication. “The Light Remains” Memorial Wall honors family and friends who have lost their lives from HIV/ AIDS. It also serves as a reminder to loved ones that their light remains. The historical timeline showcases the progress this organization has made in the community in its 40 years of service.

Care Resource started out in 1983 as Health Crisis Network, founded by people who had been affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Care Resource is now a nonprofit organization, offering healthcare services to local communities in Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Historically, the organization has been an ally of the LGBTQ community, providing services regardless of immigration status, religion, gender, age or insurance. The history of

Reflecting on Thanksgiving Gratitude, Progress, and the Fight Ahead As Thanksgiving approaches, it offers a poignant moment for our communities to come together, reflect, and express gratitude. We have come a long way in the fight for our rights and acceptance, but it is essential to acknowledge that our journey is far from over. This year let us take a moment to be thankful for the progress we have made but also recognize the existing challenges that lie ahead. Over the years, Thanksgiving has transformed into a celebration of diversity and inclusivity for many LGBTQ+ individuals. It is a time when we gather with chosen families, cherishing the bonds we have forged through love and acceptance. We stand proudly, knowing that our community has achieved milestones that were once thought impossible. There is a new wave of oppression aimed at the LGBTQ+ community, reminding us that progress is not linear. We find ourselves facing hurdles we never anticipated, from legislative battles to societal pushbacks. Our transgender and gender diverse family, our youth, and our Black and Brown communities are consistently under attack at a political level and those attacks have real life consequences that result in the specialized help and support provided by SunServe.

We are committed to providing comprehensive mental healthcare and vital, life-changing social services to LGBTQ+ youth, adults, and seniors, regardless of their ability to pay. We understand the unique challenges our community faces, and we are here to offer support and care to those who need it most. As we approach the holiday season, I am grateful for the opportunity to lead SunServe, not just an organization, but a movement that is dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals. I am inspired by the spirit and strength of the mental healthcare and social service professionals who help change lives every day for people who often have nowhere else to go. This holiday season, please consider a gift to SunServe. Thanks to the Florida AIDS Walk, your contribution will be doubled, allowing us to reach even more individuals on our waiting lists. Together, we can make a difference in their lives. Your generosity can provide a lifeline to someone in need. Thank you for your support. We wish you a Thanksgiving filled with love, gratitude, and the hope for a better tomorrow.

New Safe Space for LGBTQIA+ Youth Ostracized, abandoned, and othered. That’s how many LGBTQIA+ youth feel as they try to start their lives. A new place is offering another feeling: Welcomed. Sunshine Pride House is a welcoming safe space for LGBTQIA+ youth in crisis. Many are transitioning out of foster care while others come in right off the streets. The home is a collaborative effort between Sunshine Cathedral, which owns and manages the property, and SunServe, which provides programming such as therapy, social outings, and other ways to connect and form their own community. FLITE Center provides supervision of the home as well as doing intake for new residents. Our Fund Foundation is responsible for continuing the funding. “The minute Sunshine Cathedral came to the table I knew this was it. We have the final piece of the puzzle,” Our Fund’s David Jobin told OutClique. “For the last few years, we’ve had an LGBT homeless youth fund. But it never had a house. We gave them money to get off the street. Hotel money, help studying for the GED. But donors were pushing for a house. Where’s the roof?” Sunshine Pride House is a passion project SunServe CEO Tony Lima’s been working on since he joined the organization two years ago. “We are preparing these youth to live a successful life. We’re not just giving them

space. They stay months, whatever it takes to get them on their feet.” “Our goal is to help kids get off the street, learn the life skills they need to transition to independence, and gain stability and a family feeling as they grow,” FLITE’s Chief Program Officer, Cara Malave, said. The home has twelve beds, double the original operating capacity. Lima says the extra beds exponentially help them broaden the mission. While most of the residents are long term, meaning they’re there for several weeks or months, two beds are kept open for emergency intake. While similar efforts have been attempted by other area groups, they all came up short. Sunshine Cathedral Senior Minister Rev. Dr. Durrell Watkins believes this time will be different. “We’re very excited. It’s going to have great clinical care, counseling, and social work. This is the most collaborative effort I’ve seen since I moved to South Florida 17 years ago.” With four of South Florida’s major LGBTQ philanthropies and service organizations, Dr. Watkins says the outlook is good. “We are passionate about saving queer lives and bringing joy to queer lives. We do a lot for adults and seniors, and we want to do something for young people.”

Museum of Discovery and Science Honored at the White House South Florida is more than beaches at day and clubs at night. The area has a burgeoning cultural scene and the rest of the country is taking notice.

(2018) has been incredible,” Cox told OutClique. “So many of the things we said we were going to do, we’ve done or in the process of completing.”

The Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) in Fort Lauderdale was honored as one of America’s top museums by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Joe Cox, MODS President and CEO, accepted the award during a ceremony at the White House with First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden.

Cox was accompanied by Phillip Dunlap, director of the Broward County Cultural Division. “Joe and his team at MODS do incredible work in the areas of environmental resilience, sustainability, DEI, and so much more,” he said. “They are an incredible model to the nation, and we are proud that they are part of the Greater Fort Lauderdale community.”

The National Medal for Museum and Library Service is the nation's highest honor given to museums and libraries demonstrating excellence in service to their communities. “I love working in museums. Coming in at the time I did

Bouvèé Babble Miss Indie-pendant

Over the past several months, I have spent a ton of time on the road promoting Big Easy Queens (www. BigEasyQueens.com). Just like any small business owner, I have thrown my blood, sweat, and tears into this project and, thankfully, it seems to be paying off. So much so that we now have interest in two more films that are entering development! The stage is always my home and it will remain so, but I have found that I love filmmaking just as much. As we begin the process on our next two concepts, I have some advice for those wishing to get involved (whether in our film or in making your own).

go back and witness a performance of your own or others time and time again.

Indie filmmaking just means you don’t have the financial and marketing support of a major studio. That means, if you want it or want it done, it is you who has to do it. That takes resources, contacts, networking, and funds. But filmmaking appeals to me for its ability to capture and preserve performances. Live-theatre has its appeal too because experiencing those performances with audiences is what makes it so special. But as a performer, it is nice to

Since I am babbling, it is the Bouvee Babble afterall, I will close with this: I now proudly wear the hat of a film producer and film actor. It is a culture I am loving to learn about, experience, and a community that has accepted Miss Bouvee with open arms. It’s also an incredible way to engage with my local community in the ways of producers and artists alike. My advice to you, dear readers, if you are interested in being involved or starting your own project, DO IT! You will not regret it.

The artistic adventure extends beyond the concept, writing process, and days on set. The places filmmaking can take you are worth the time and investment. Is the return quick? No. Is it all worth it? You bet! You will meet people who will inspire and support you in ways you didn’t know or even think about. You will see and do things out of your comfort zone, all for the sake of your film. Aside from the physical travel and literal journey, the artistic journey filmmaking has afforded me will be with me for the rest of my life.

LIFTING UP SOUTH FLORIDA’S LGBTQ COMMUNITY

Harvey Shapiro and Michael Dager

Renaming GMCSF's Community Leadership Award Honoring Doug Pew The Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida will honor community leaders and organizations at The Chic & Unique Ball on November 4th, 2023. The distinguished Al LaMorges Community Leadership Award has undergone a significant name change to pay tribute to the late Douglas J. Pew, who was the first-ever board chair of GMCSF (Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida) and a tireless advocate for the community throughout his life. Doug, whose influence and commitment were instrumental in shaping GMCSF's vision, sadly passed away in September. This year, two accolades will be presented in his name to commemorate Doug's legacy. The first award for individual contributions will be presented to Harvey Shapiro and Michael Dager for their outstanding dedication and service to GMCSF and the LGBTQ+ community. Both individuals have shown an unwavering commitment to the ideals Doug passionately believed in and worked towards. The second honor will be awarded

to Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Hollywood. This establishment has consistently shown active participation and contribution to community initiatives, embodying the spirit of the award. In addition to these recognitions, the Corporate Crescendo Award will be presented to The Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, spotlighting exemplary corporate engagement. This esteemed acknowledgment is a testament to their outstanding contributions to the Chorus, strengthening the bond between GMCSF and its corporate supporters. GMCSF remains ever grateful to community leaders like Douglas J. Pew, Harvey Shapiro, and Michael Dager and organizations like Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and The Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort. Their tireless commitment to the cause ensures the continuation and growth of the Chorus's legacy and vision.

Local Realtor, Bradley Bush Joins GMCSF Board of Directors Bradley Bush, the former President and Board Chair of Fort Lauderdale Gay Men's Chorus, joins The Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida as the group's newest Director. Bradley will serve alongside the most recent appointees, which include Denise M. Jordan, Executive Vice President at Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce; Singer/Songwriter and Producer Tom Nichols, COO of The Arcus Foundation; Erick Eldridge, Director of Special Events from Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Hollywood; Johnnie Mejia, VP, Sales and Client Experience Specialist, Sr., from PNC Bank; and The Honorable Mayor Judy Paul of the Town of Davie. "As a distinguished real estate agent for over 20 years, Bradley has made numerous connections in the tri-county community. We are so happy to have his experience and enthusiasm to assist the Chorus to continue its unprecedented growth and outreach efforts," stated Fred Boykin, current GMCSF Board Chair.

Bradley is a Realtor at Balistreri Real Estate and a member of the Tenor One section for GMCSF. His past nonprofit experience includes fundraising for several years at the East Broward Auxiliary of the Children's Home Society, where he volunteered for the Children's Shelter in Downtown Fort Lauderdale. Also, he was an active leader in the now-defunct Fort Lauderdale Gay Men's Chorus. Vice President of Membership Bill Spinosa commented at a recent meeting, "Having served in leadership before with Bradley, I am honored once again to serve with him. Bradley is a leader who is unafraid to do what is needed to get the job done." Mr. Bush is affiliated with the National Association of Realtors, the Realtor Association of Broward, Palm Beaches & St. Lucie, and the Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce. When asked about his new role, Bradley replied, "It is an honor to be appointed to the Board of Directors. I always want to give back to my community, and I can't think of a better way to do so than through the message of song."

GMCSF Gala Goes Primetime Their voices are full and their sound is mighty. The Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida is one of South Florida’s leading LGBTQIA+ organizations, entertaining and building bridges one amazing note at a time.

the famous Met Gala, which always brings out amazing and imaginative looks. “For the ‘chic’ part, we want overthe-top formalwear. For the ‘unique’ part, think of the Met Gala.”

As they prepare for the new season, they have a new look and sound after more than three dozen singers auditioned over the summer. When they debut this fall, they may be the GMCSF’s most diverse iteration in its history.

Upon arrival, guests will walk a step and repeat where they will be photographed by a throng of paparazzi. Once inside they’ll be treated to a live band, dinner, exquisite drinks, and more.

The chorus is also making a big change to its schedule. Traditionally they’ve held a spring lunch/brunch event as their main fundraiser. That all goes away this year, as they’re holding their first gala, and it will be much earlier in the season. “The spring is jam packed with so many [galas],” GMCSF Executive Director Mark Kent told OutClique. “We wanted to get out of the crowded time period and come out in the fall.” With the theme “Chic & Unique”, the gala is Saturday, November 4, 2023, at 8:00pm at the Westin on Fort Lauderdale Beach. Kent says moving from brunch to primetime fits with their usual performance motif. “It sizzles a little bit more. We do our concerts in the evening. This red carpet extravaganza typifies the organization.” The group began rehearsals just after Labor Day and songs will be selected by artistic director, Gabe Salazar. Kent says the “Chic & Unique” vibe is meant to invoke

General admission is still available, and tickets are $200, which includes everything at the main event. Tables are also available for $2,000. After the program, all guests can go to the Westin’s rooftop venue for a fabulous postparty. Kent is excited about the venue and says the Westin has long been a community partner. “We have worked with them for several years and they’re really good with the nonprofit community. They understand and get what it means to be a non-profit. They try to help us as much as they can to have a successful event.” While events like this and their holiday concert are among their high-profile events, they do many more appearances throughout the year. “We find going out in community is an important step in bridging gaps between gay and the rest of society.” Money raised from this fundraiser will help GMCSF do more outreach.

TikTok Star Matt Mathews

Brings Debut National Tour to Parker Playhouse

November 18, 2023

www.ParkerPlayhouse.com | The Parker

Matt Mathews never intended to pursue social media fame, but we’re sure glad it happened! Hailing from Birmingham, Alabama, the TikTok star, comedian and award-winning boudoir photographer is bringing his debut national stand-up tour, When That Thang Get Ta’ Thangn’, to Fort Lauderdale’s Parker Playhouse on November 18, 2023. Skyrocketing into the spotlight during the COVID-19 pandemic through his hilarious posts and videos, Mathews is celebrated for his relatability and situational humor while discussing a variety of topics and personal experiences, including his daily life of living on a farm, growing up gay in Alabama, his career as a boudoir photographer, relationships, and taboo sexual encounters. Mathews’ live show is nothing short of a bonafide barn burner, guaranteed to provide bountiful belly laughs for audiences. He will also bring his ever-popular "Confessions with Matt" video series to the stage, where he provides a real-time comedic take on audience members who voluntarily spill their deepest, darkest secrets. OutClique had the pleasure of catching up with Mathews ahead of his South Florida appearance. Denny Patterson: Let me begin by asking, how excited are you to bring your When That Thang Get Ta’ Thangn’ Tour to South Florida? Matt Mathews: I am very excited! Florida has been one of the most popular places so far, and it's always exciting to just be in the south. Being from Alabama, anytime I get to do shows in the south, I feel right at home and it’s so much fun. Denny Patterson: What can we expect from this performance? Matt Mathews: A lot of people think that this show is going to be about a bunch of farm chores and things like that because that’s what people know me for the most, but this show is quite the opposite. It’s about my life. It gives people a deeper side of me, and people get to learn more about Matt Mathews the person. Not just the farm chores guy. Denny Patterson: You skyrocketed into social media stardom during the pandemic after you started posting videos on TikTok about your daily life and living on a farm. What was the decision behind doing this?

Matt Mathews: Well, I didn't really plan to post on TikTok, and honestly, I didn’t even want one. Everybody kept saying I needed a TikTok, and I was like, look. That’s for kids. TikTok is for kids that just dance, sing, and lip sync. That’s not for me, but everyone kept pushing for me to get an account, so I finally made one and posted my first video, and it got around 13 million views. I was like, what is happening? So, I kept posting, just to see what would happen, and people would reach out saying, your videos bring me so much laughter and they make me feel good. The more I posted, the more they blew up. Denny Patterson: Can you tell us how becoming social media famous led you to doing comedy shows and this new tour? Matt Mathews: Social media is a crazy thing. I got on social media just to share my everyday life and whatever comes to my mind. If something comes to my mind, it’s coming out of my mouth. I'm very blunt and transparent, so I would basically say what everybody else wanted to say. Everybody kept saying I should do comedy, and I never in a million years had a plan to do comedy. I never wanted to do comedy, and I never had a goal to do comedy. It was never a dream, but I decided, well, if everybody else thinks I'm so funny, maybe I should give it a shot. So, I started writing with a local writer in Birmingham, Alabama, and then I opened for a couple comedians that came through at the local comedy club. They were then like, let’s give you a show and see how it goes. All three shows sold out in two minutes, and it just kind of spiraled from there. Denny Patterson: What advice or words of comfort can you offer to other queer people who live in small farming towns and don’t feel like they can authentically live their lives? Matt Mathews: At the end of the day, you have to be willing to live your life for you. People’s opinions of who you are doesn’t matter. What they say about you doesn’t matter. If you're happy with yourself, then you're going to be a better person because of it. It may be very difficult to come out to your family and friends, but I always say that living a life of truth and authenticity is way better than living a life full of lies and being somebody that you're not. If that means losing contact with your family or losing contact with a specific person, then so be it because if people can't love you for you, then they don't deserve to love you.

Equality Garden Club 10th Anniversary Tropical Plant Fair Equality Garden Club has just announced their tenth anniversary Tropical Plant Fair which will be held on November 18 & 19, 2023, at Richardson Historic Park & Nature Preserve. Club Secretary Pat Ellson has gathered an impressive group of over 40 vendors from around the state of Florida who will be selling a wide variety of native and exotic plants. “We have filled every available space,” she said. Fairgoers will find everything from small aroids, hoyas, and orchids to colorful blooming butterfly plants, shrubs, fruit trees and much more. Food vendors, artists, and crafts workers will complement the selection of plant vendors. And many vendors will be stocking gift items. The two-day outdoor event is Equality Garden Club’s signature annual event. “It’s amazing to think that this is the fair’s tenth anniversary,” said community leader and garden club founder Chuck Nicholls. “In 2013 we realized that there were no other plant fairs in our area, so we decided to go for it.” Chuck, Chip Jones, and Richard Perez were the organizers of the first Tropical Plant Fair, which was held at The Pride Center at Equality Park. “The plants for sale at our fair are grown in our area and will therefore be much more likely to survive in our home gardens than many of the plants available at the big box stores,” said club president Bob Mays. “Our vendors

are experts in their fields, and they are very willing to share their knowledge. When buying plants, we all have questions such as ‘How much light and water does this plant need, how big will it grow, etc.’ Our vendors will be able to answer these questions - and more - with authority.” Proceeds of the plant fair benefit the club’s projects and activities including support of local charitable organizations. The club is currently working with Wilton Manors Elementary School to restore their very large butterfly garden. This project will enable the students to learn not only about plants in the garden but also about the amazing life cycles of butterflies. For the second year the club has also cooperated with the City of Wilton Manors, Fort Lauderdale Orchid Society, and Fairchild Tropical Garden to plant almost 900 native Florida orchids in the trees of Richardson Park. Admission to the event is $5.00, good for both days. There is free admission for children 12 and under. Parking is free in the parking lot of Wilton Manors City Hall across the street, and free shuttles will be running continuously from the parking lot to the fairgrounds. A Holiday Preview with MODS CEO Joe Cox Otters instead of reindeer and dropping the ball at noon instead of midnight. The holidays have a different vibe at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS). The iconic institution in downtown Fort Lauderdale is celebrating the season in its own unique way. Fresh off being named one of the top museums in the country, CEO Joe Cox and his team are looking forward to an extremely festive season. It starts with otters. Yes. Otters. “I thought that one would be of interest,” Cox said as he started his interview with OutClique. “We have two otters here at the museum, and this will be their first Breakfast with the Otters that they’ve participated in.”

The event is at 9am on Saturday, November 11, 2023, and tickets to the VIP event are $75. Space is limited and reservations are required. “What I love about this event is it really is for everyone and all ages,” Cox said. After breakfast there will be an otter talk and a chance to have an otter enrichment activity. “We’ll be doing a meet and greet with some of the other animals that live here at the museum. What’s lovely about this is it really gives guests a chance to meet our animal husbandry specialists who care for the otters and all the animals we have at the museum.” While MODS is a great place for children to explore and develop, it also has events that are great for childless

adults. One-third of last year’s otter breakfast were people without children. “It’s for families, whoever your family is. If you just want to come because it’s a really cute thing to do with a friend, come do it.” Countdown to ‘24 New Year’s Eve begins, and ends, a little early at MODS. “A big tradition is our New Year’s Eve celebration. It’s our way of allowing parents to celebrate New Year’s Eve with their kids. It’s a countdown at noon and two.” Why try to entertain and stimulate kids until midnight when you can take care of it in the afternoon? The New Year at MODS is celebrated at noon (ringing in 2024 with Seoul) and at 2pm (ringing in 2024 with Guam). “We have all the dressings for a new year’s party. The ball drop, the confetti, making resolutions, bubble wrap on the floor so it sounds like fireworks. We countdown at noon and two. Then you can put the little ones to bed and celebrate anyway you want to celebrate.” There’s a new twist to the tradition this year that incorporates Pomp, Snow, & CIRQUEumstance. “It’s a wonderful new book that was written by the genius behind some of the cirque shows. The characters are spectacular.” At this party, the characters come to life. “There are live action characters that come out and assist in the storytelling. They’re big, lovely, and gorgeous.” A Green Future One of the achievements Cox is most proud of is their green initiative. When he came to the museum in 2018, he and his team created a master plan for 2020-2025. “We’re one of the few museums in the country to have an environmental sustainability department.” MODS has more than 100 paid interns working 20 hours a month. The program teaches them how to curate a great museum, while MODS gets a youthful view. It’s a perspective Cox appreciates. “I started in this field as an intern. It’s really exciting to see the next generation of museum professionals starting here at the museum.”

Another point of satisfaction for Cox is something he sees walking through the door every day: diversity. “One of the things that’s really great about our relationship [with the community] is bringing the museum’s focus on inclusivity to everyone. We want people to know that this is their museum and to welcome them.”

South Florida native, Kyaunnee Richardson, has performed with orchestras throughout Florida, as well as Utah, Savannah, Washington D.C., and New York. Puts Its Bows on a Holiday Gift

Called “New York’s Buffest, Poppiest String Quartet” who are “more than mere hunks,” by New York Magazine, WellStrung unwraps A Well-Strung Christmas in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center on Friday, December 8, 2023, at 8 PM. The men holding these different kinds of holiday bows are

Edmund Bagnell (1st violin), Chris Marchant (2nd violin), Daniel Shevlin (cello), and Trevor Wadleigh (viola). Together they deliver a unique blend of vocals and strings as they fuse classical and pop music that make the holidays sparkle. The program features cherished traditional melodies as well as pop classics.

In a review of the concert in Manhattan’s Feinstein’s/54 Below Cabaret, BroadwayWorld.com noted, “With A WellStrung Christmas, the charming foursome gives plenty of reasons for us all to put aside our copies of New Kids on the Block's Merry, Merry Christmas and 'N SYNC's Home For Christmas . . . Each member of Well-Strung sings and plays with effervescing warmth, making the holidays that much brighter.”

14 years ago. At the time, Marchant was splitting his time between doing a show and playing his violin on the street for a little extra income.

Broadway producer Mark Cortale conceived the group with Marchant over brunch in Provincetown, Massachusetts,

The New York Times heralded its arrival declaring, “WellStrung — a talented quartet of men who sing and play

Following their debut show at Ars Nova in NYC, the group quickly became a Provincetown hit at The Art House and it wasn’t long before they started getting national attention.

string instruments — got its start in Provincetown and brilliantly fuses pop and classical music from Madonna to Beethoven.” The group has since performed from the House of Blues in New Orleans to the Leicester Square Theatre in London. As a testament to its broad appeal, Well-Strung has appeared on The Today Show three times and with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live. And, of course, there was “Team Well-Strung” as Marchant

and Wadleigh participated in season 30 of The Amazing Race, becoming fan favorites as they completed six legs trekking through Iceland, Belgium, Morocco, France and the Czech Republic. The members also have a celebrity fan base with several YouTube videos introducing the ensemble in 2012. Their hit music video “Chelsea’s Mom” that they made with Randy Rainbow led to a live performance for Hillary Clinton. They were invited to perform at the Vatican in Rome and at a gala for President Obama in 2016.

Proving that their stage presence translates into musical presents in their December concert, Well-Strung has held their own performing with Kristin Chenoweth, Neil Patrick Harris, Audra McDonald and Deborah Voigt, among others. After its self-named first recording, Well-Strung's second album, entitled POPssical, debuted at no. 8 on the Billboard Classical Crossover Chart. Its third album, Under The Covers, debuted four places higher on that chart and at no. 3 on the magazine’s Classical Chart. The group’s releases feature classical and pop mashups such as Green Day’s “21 Guns”/Pachelbel's “Canon;” Radiohead’s “Creep”/“Ave Maria;” Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi”/Vivaldi’s “Winter;” and Taylor Swift’s “Mean”/ Aaron Copeland’s “Rodeo.” The ensemble also puts their mark on such pop hits as Britney Spears’ “Tonic,” Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” The Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun,” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” Just as the group brings classical music to younger audiences, they are committed to helping young musicians and work with school orchestras, ensembles

and soloists. They listen to students perform and also play their own selections and answer questions about the music industry. In addition to its members’ talents, there is also the ensemble’s hot looks and Marchant admits that there is sometimes pressure to be buff. Speaking to New York Magazine he said, “I mean, of course we want to be told we’re good-looking, and that’s fantastic. Every band wants sex appeal, and we’re fine with that, as long as the music comes first.” With their talent and boy band vibe, it’s little wonder the New York Daily News said Well-Strung is “the hottest thing with a bow since Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games.” Now they’re here to bring the holiday cheer for one night only at the Broward Center in a concert presented as part of the Allegro Fort Lauderdale Mosaic Series. Tickets are available at BrowardCenter.org, Ticketmaster.com, by phone at 954.462.0222 and in person at the Broward Center’s AutoNation Box Office.

Sing, Garden, Cook Troy Cook is surprisingly domestic for a jet-setting international operatic baritone with a packed performance schedule. When he’s not on stage, the garden and kitchen are his happy places. He and his partner, Rob Kent, share a beautiful Bucks County, Pennsylvania home where Cook is currently enjoying their new induction oven. He makes enchiladas and Thai food from scratch, and always cooks the roast or turkey at holidays. But the couple’s carefully curated and tended gardens are their pride and joy, and the place where Cook finds peace. “As singers, we always have something going through our minds, a tune or something. My nickname growing up was Tunely or Tunes, because I was always humming something,” Cook says. “Weeding, pruning things back, deadheading, that sort of repetitive task gives me a break from myself. It’s one of the few things I find that can just turn that off and I can just be in the garden. It’s good work, it’s nice to be outside, and it’s really good for my mental health.” Cook will be in South Florida this month to prepare for his role as Giorgio Germont in Verdi’s La traviata, the opener for Florida Grand Opera’s 82nd season. He can’t remember the exact number of times he’s done the role, three or four, but Opera News called his debut “stirring” and a “standout.” Cook is excited to revisit it at FGO, where he was once a member of the renowned Studio Artist Program. La traviata is the quintessential “hooker with a heart of gold” tale, based on the life of a celebrated 19th century Parisian courtesan and her love affair with the writer Alexandre Dumas, fils. La dame aux camélias was a smashing success, inspiring over 30 films, including Pretty Woman and Moulin Rouge, a musical, a ballet, and of course, Giuseppe Verdi’s romantic and popular opera. La traviata has consistently played in opera houses all over the world almost since its premiere. So why go to see it at Florida Grand Opera?

“If you go to see The Phantom of the Opera and then see it 5 years later, you see the same show,” says Cook. “The FGO production of Traviata is going to be very different from the Metropolitan Opera production. And that’s the beauty of opera. One reason you can go to see La traviata time and time again is because when you know the general story the interesting part becomes HOW the story is told.” Cook plays the father of brash young Alfredo, who is in love with the courtesan Violetta Valéry. Act II of La traviata is Cook’s big opportunity to unleash his glorious, robust baritone voice in a devastating duet where he tells Violetta that her association with his family is endangering his children’s futures. After Violetta heartbrokenly agrees to abandon Alfredo for his own good, Germont faces his son and unsuccessfully tries to convince him to return home. “I think one of the real clinchers to a successful Germont is that he is driven by his deep religious beliefs. It’s not just about money and family, it’s something more deeply rooted,” Cook says. “As a religious person, not just as a father, he thinks he’s truly doing the right thing. He’s saving his son and saving Violetta’s soul. The selfrighteousness of Germont has to come through.” Still, the Germont Cook will create for Florida Grand Opera won’t necessarily be the one he’s done previously. “I approach every new production with an open mind. The part that really feeds me and my soul is developing the psychology of this Germont.” The excitement of discovery takes Cook back to his passion for gardening and landscape design. “Things are constantly in bloom. You come to our gardens here at different times of year and it looks completely different,” Cook says, and then grins. “It’s like going to different Traviatas with different opera companies. It’s exciting.”

See Troy Cook in La traviata November 11, 12, or 14 at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, November 30 or December 2 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.
