WHAT MAKES US CLIQUE

ANTONIO EDWARDS

By Andy Armano | www.AndyArmano.com

This series focuses on individuals who give to our community and make a positive impact on the lives of others. Often it is through our personal adversities that we discover who we are and transform the challenges into strength. 06 | OutClique.com

A

growing up, that is the type of God I believed in. I believed in a God that sat on clouds and looked down at me and judged everything I did. Now that I discovered a more spiritually-based church, I know that that's not the case. At least that's not the God that I believe in.

Andy Armano: How did you get started in the entertainment business?

AE

And the thing about that is, not to pass any judgment on any other churches, but sometimes when you go to a church, you feel pressured to do something, or you feel pressure to become a member, or pressure to give, or that sort of thing. When I invite people to my church, I say, “Hey, come to the church, see if you like it. Or just come in and enjoy the music, or enjoy the talk, enjoy the message, and that's it. And, if it resonates with you, come back and see us. I think it's a way to bring the community together, and I see a lot of people from this community, specifically in Wilton Manors, that have come to my church and stayed, and that's kind of a cool thing.

I discovered a more spiritual road to the divine as opposed to a religious road. I like spirituality, as opposed to rules that tell you that you can't do this, and if you do this, you'll be punished. I can honestly say that when I was

When I was a teenager in high school, I dabbled in songwriting and I knew I always wanted to be a vocalist or a singer, but I didn't really pursue it that actively because there's no formula to becoming a recording artist. I started off as a manager for different companies, just regular jobs, but I always sang on the side. It was something I always did because I enjoyed it. I also sang in nightclubs and bars.

Antonio Edwards: Growing up in my church, my father was a Baptist minister, my grandfather, my mother's father, my father's father, and two of my brothers, all Baptist ministers. So there was no way I was not growing up and singing in church.

AA

You mention that the church figured prominently in your youth and your love of singing. Does it still play a role today?

Yes. The world needs change. I think you can outgrow your upbringing. At a certain point, you decide to be a decent person. And that's who I choose to be. I choose to be a decent person. I choose to be a respectful person. I make that choice every day.

You have had a very successful run at the Alibi. How has your singing career evolved?

AE

When I came out around the age of 18, the only people I ever saw on stage were female impersonators or dancers, which was great. I loved them, but I was like, there was no representation unless you were wearing a wig or wearing a jockstrap. Those are the only ways you're going to get on stage. I quickly learned that the drag queen scene has a pageant circuit. And I was like, well that's interesting, but they don't have anything like that for boys. Then, one of the drag queens said that of course they do. There's Mr. Gay America. So I contacted them and asked when the next pageant was. And they said, “Mr. Missouri is in a week.” So I had literally six days to prepare. I got myself together, went to the Mr. Missouri pageant. I didn't win, but I was first runner up, and the winner and first runner up get to go to nationals. I kind of got bit by the pageant bug. I entered another preliminary for Mr. Gay America. It took me seven times to win it. It was September, 1997 when I won the title of Mr. Gay America. And I was like, “Oh wow, this is amazing.” With that title, they will pay for you to travel across the country. And so I did and that was great. After that national title I wanted more. The next year I went to Mr. Gay USA. I was in the top five, and then the following year I won. That was 2001ish. Then I captured the title of Mr. Continental in 2005. Leading up to today, there is a national pageant called All American Gent, which is a division of the All American Goddess Pageant. I competed for all American Gent two times prior to winning on my third attempt. That was this past March.

AA AE

Did the pageant circuit help your singing career?

I gained a lot of notoriety through the pageant circuit as a singer because a lot of the contestants weren't live singers. But prior to that, I literally would go to a director,

08 | OutClique.com

and say, “Hey, can I sing?” They'd say, “We're not gonna pay you, but sure.” When I got to Fort Lauderdale, I was impressed with the performers. At that time the singer Jennifer McClain was going out of town and she kindly asked me to fill in for her on a Saturday. That was really successful. Later, after four weeks of filling in for Dame Edna, I was approached by management to start my own show.

AA AE

How was coming out for you? Did you suffer any major repercussions?

I'm very fortunate that I didn't have any backlash with my family about that. I’ve heard too many stories about kids being thrown out of their homes and disowned by their family. My family was very accepting of me. I pretty much kept my lifestyle quiet at first. After I was with my partner for three years we decided to get married, and I invited my mother to the wedding. Not only did she come, she sang at the wedding. I wasn't expecting her to be quite that accepting. But she was. I am very blessed.

MILA, MIAMI’S NEW ROOFTOP “MEDITERRASIAN” RESTAURANT

SET TO OPEN IN SOUTH BEACH FALL 2019 Photos courtesy of taraink PR

F

ounded by Gregory and Marine Galy, MILA, a “MediterrAsian” restaurant, lounge, and mixology bar, has announced it will open in South Beach Fall 2019. Located at 800 Lincoln Road, the rooftop space totaling 13,000 square feet and 247 seats will feature a multi-sensory culinary experience that draws influences from the shores of the Mediterranean and Japan, while creating a luxurious expression of ingredient-driven modern MediterrAsian cuisine and mindful mixology in a laid- back setting accentuated by clean-lines.

26 | OutClique.com

MILA’s cuisine is inspired by Mediterranean and Asian eating practices. The artfully balanced menu designed by Executive Chef Nicolas Mazier delivers a cohesive culinary story that marries health and nutrition with sensorial textures, flavors, and beautifully plated dishes. MILA’s bar program is curated by Diageo World Class award-winning mixologists Jennifer Le Nechet and Mido Yahi. To accommodate MILA’s extensive spirits program, there are two bars: MILA’s main bar and V by

MILA (pronounced “Five”).

gels, dry ice, no ice, and fire.

Located inside the main dining room, MILA’s main bar features thoughtful flavor combinations, handcrafted syrups, and the finest liquors, and is broken down in fourfold: MILA Signatures, Interpretation of Classics, Classic Cocktails, and Zero Proof. Unique ingredients used in MILA’s mixology program include beeswax, smoked honey syrup, black walnut bitter, floral sake, sesame orgeat syrup, basil syrup, signature bloody mary spice blend, and butterfly pea tea infused vodka, to name a few.

Brought to life by interior designer Olya Volkova, MILA’s design weaves traditional and noble materials such as reclaimed woods, unpolished floors, untainted stones, handmade linen and cotton fabrics together to create a symphony of perfection. MILA’s aesthetic fuses minimalistic Cycladic islands design with Japan’s Wabi Sabi philosophy of embracing life’s unpredictability and accepting imperfections as beauty.

On the terrace, guests can experience V by MILA, an upscale, whimsical, and avant-garde imbibing experience similar to an omakase kitchen, whereby guests have an exclusive front row seat to the world of bespoke mixology. The concept embodies the power of five – the five senses with which any food or drink should be enjoyed (sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch); the five elements to which the experience pays homage (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water); and the five pillars of MILA’s DNA (food, mixology, design, ambiance, and people). V by MILA offers eight signature cocktails involving theatrical creations embracing the MediterrAsian fusion, highlighting all elements and modern techniques such as liquid nitrogen, foams,

MILA’s 150-seat main dining room further bridges the spirited connection of the Mediterranean and Asian concepts with earth tones, sleek wooden and canvas furniture, and teardrop pendant lights. French carving master Etienne Moyat sculpted MILA’s wooden dining room wall with an intricate swirling pattern simulating roots. The 5,000 square foot terrace includes a 3,000 square foot generous, serene water-feature and luxurious landscape able to accommodate up to 100 guests. Two exclusive cabanas frame the water space for private dining, while lounge seating surrounds the terrace. The open-sky sanctuary effortlessly blends modernity and tranquility with clean lines and organic materials.

MILA is located at 800 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL 33139. Learn more by visiting www.MILARestaurant.com.

2 OF A KIND

BRENT KUENNING AND STEVE GEYER By Denny Patterson

W

2 of a Kind is currently in discussions with several South Florida venues about their new show, Manilow: The Man, The Music, The Magic. They have performed in South Florida several times over the past 3-4 years and have been committed to giving back to the LGBTQ community. They have partnered several times with The Sanctuary producing benefits for local organizations like the Stonewall National Museum & Archives and the Pride Center. I had the pleasure of chatting more with Kuenning and Geyer about their friendship, partnership, and passion for performing. Denny Patterson: Why don't you start off by telling me how you two met and when you started performing together. How did 2 of a Kind come to be? Steve Geyer: We were both living in New York City and breaking into the business. We met when we were performing in shows at side by side hotels in Atlantic City and our casts would hang out almost every night after the shows. When we got back to the city, Brent kept reintroducing himself to me every time 28 | OutClique.com

hether on the Broadway stage, touring around the world, or entertaining audiences on a cruise ship or in a casino, Brent Kuenning and Steve Geyer are two longtime friends and seasoned performers who formed the powerhouse duo called 2 of a Kind. Not only do they bring their combined experience of dance, vocal virtuosity, and comedic talent to the stage, but they also bring a high level of energy and fun. Kuenning’s luxuriant baritone voice combined with Geyer’s dazzling tenor creates a harmonic blend that will leave audiences wanting more. The stage is their natural habitat, so there is no lack of entertainment. we would meet, whether it be at a party, the gym, an audition, etc. As if we had never met before. It was a bit annoying [laughs]. We then both ended up being cast in a Christmas show, and when I saw him on the first day of rehearsal, I called my agent and told her to get me out of the gig. I can’t work with this guy. However, we ended up sharing a car together during the run of the show and bonded over our love of Christmas music and became best friends. Brent Kuenning: Of course we did, who couldn’t love me? [laughs]. Shortly after that, we were sharing an apartment in Harlem and I had Steve listen to this great duet sung by Robbie Williams - the Brit singer, in his version of Me and Shadow. We learned and sang it and it soon hit us that this collaboration had the making of a great show.

DP

Fantastic! Now that you are best friends, what do you enjoy most about working with each other?

SG

Other than doing what you love with your best friend, knowing we can rely on each other's strengths to make us both better performers.

BK

Always knowing you are working with a true professional and knowing they always have your back.

DP SG

With each performance, what do you look forward to the most?

BK DP SG

Feeling the energy of the audience and how much fun they are having.

That moment when you can feel we are really in sync. So much so that in the silence of a breath in music you can feel that the audience is totally with us on the ride.

Have you two always had a passion for music and performing?

I started working as a young child so there was never a doubt in my mind that it was a part of me.

BK

For me, it was always a passion as my mother loved to sing. However, I never thought I would do it professionally until I had my first professional singing job when I was still in college. I then got the bug and was hooked.

DP BK

How do you keep every performance fresh and exciting?

As we go back to each show, there is always something we think we can improve upon. We look at what worked last time or if something is influenced by what we have recently done or seen. So, a slight change in choreography or harmony changes the whole feeling and keeps us on our toes.

DP

Once you two first step out on stage, what's going through your heads? What kind of emotions and feelings are there?

SG

There is always that fear of stepping onto a speeding train, but once you slip into a familiar harmony and start to execute some well-polished choreography,

that all melts away and you know you are home.

BK

There are always a few butterflies, but that is expected, and I do love them. It gives me those good energetic nerves that get me excited every time. I seriously have never not been excited to get to perform with Steve.

DP BK

What do you two hope to accomplish within the next year?

We started to collaborate with a new manager, Suzanne Sharp at Sharp Management, and we just launched a new website, www.BrentAndSteve.com. So, we are looking to reach a much wider audience outside the state lines and beyond. We are also looking to work with some cruise ship lines.

DP

That sounds amazing. So, what’s next for 2 of a Kind? Any upcoming projects we should be on the lookout for?

BK

Other than the Manilow show, we have three other concerts. Our signature Crooners show, Sing, Swing, and Soul that features music from the greats like Bobby Darin and the Rat Pack. Our Broadway to Silver Screen show with music from Broadway shows that have become movie musicals and vice versa, and our Elvis Revisited show that gives a new take on the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s music catalog and some of the performers he inspired. So, that gives you an idea what to expect. We are also flying to Lincoln, Nebraska, my hometown, for a two-night gig at a venue called Screamer Dining and Cabaret. A buddy of mine named Kevin Witcher, who I performed with in college, opened this establishment a few years back and booked us. Steve and I are doing something new which we are excited about. It’s a combo show of our four different shows, and it’s called 2 of a Kind – The Box Set. So, the audience is getting a taste of our four very different shows in one. We are excited to debut this show.

WHAT IS THAT SMELL? By Eric Noel Roman

S

omething stinks. Can you smell it? Maybe it is time to change. You think? I wake up everyday shower, groom, and put on (for the most part) clean clothes. So, why the smell? What keeps stinking up my surroundings? What more can I change? This confusion follows me throughout my day. I lace up my running shoes and go outside. Could that funk be my running sneakers? I run my usual route. Follow the routine while I run. I think about what I have accomplished, what I am working on, and my goals. Man that funk does not go away. I finish my regular run at a usual pace, shower, put on fresh clothes and begin errands. Ugh, still that same funky smell. Okay, new environment for the day shopping for groceries. The aisles are clean, the produce section is vibrant, the freezer section is cold. As I go about the large space picking out my rations, the smell creeps up again. As I pick my weekly fruits and veggies the funk grows. Something must be wrong with my nose. I finish shopping and head to a quick lunch at my favorite bistro, there it is again. This ever growing stench. During lunch my phone vibrates with a text message notification, interrupting my lunch. "Hey Eric pool party this weekend, come keep me company," reads the text. I reply with a confirmation and begin to plan my days to accommodate the change. Then, I realize that funk begins to recede. My week continued and I had to alter my

schedule. Run errands on days I usually relaxed, and cleaned on a day I prepared for work. My days were different. I woke up daily refreshed ready for the new challenges. The funk was not following me. I realized I had fallen into a routine. The day of the pool party came, and I showed up wearing my usual boardshorts. I get snatched away and get asked to model a new swimsuit line and am handed this tiny idea of swim shorts. In my head I was mortified. Put myself in front of a crowd wearing something resembling a slingshot, and strutting my stuff. This is way out of what my routine. I thought about it and revelled in the idea that I was doing something different. I had reinvigorated my life. I broke routine. Since that week, I began living in a way that even though I practice similar actions daily (exercise, work, clean, etc.). I make it a goal that I approach the day different to avoid the funk. Practice breaking habits. Step outside the comfort zone. Catch phrases that actually mean something. Something as simple as changing what you eat in one meal is a step in trying new things. Try it, you never know what discoveries are waiting to be uncovered.

NOT TOO SOON FOR END-OF-YEAR FINANCIAL MOVES Content provided by Edward Jones

W

e’ve still got a couple of months until 2019 draws to a close, but it’s not too early to make some end-of-year financial moves. In fact, it may be a good idea to take some of these steps sooner rather than later. Here are a few suggestions: Boost your 401(k) contributions. Like many people, you might not usually contribute the maximum to your 401(k), which, in 2019 is $19,000, or $25,000 if you’re 50 or older. Ask your employer if you can increase your 401(k) contributions in 2019, and if you receive a bonus before the year ends, you may be able to use that toward your 401(k), too. Add to your IRA. You have until April 15, 2020, to contribute to your IRA for the 2019 tax year, but the more you can put in now and over the next few months, the less you’ll have to come up with in a hurry at the filing deadline. For 2019, you can put up to $6,000 in your IRA, or $7,000 if you’re 50 or older. Review your portfolio. It’s always a good idea to review your investment portfolio at least once a year, and now is as good a time as any. But don’t make any judgments based solely on your results over the past 10 months. Instead, look carefully at how your portfolio is constructed. Is it still properly diversified, or has it become overweighted in some areas? Does it still fit your risk tolerance, or do you find yourself worrying excessively about short-term price swings? Those are the types of factors that might lead you to make some changes, possibly with the help of a financial professional.

Don’t forget about your RMDs. Once you turn 70 and ½, you generally need to start taking withdrawals - the technical term is “required minimum distributions” or RMDs - from your traditional IRA and your 401(k) or similar plan. After the first year in which you take these RMDs, you must take them by the end of each year thereafter. If you don’t withdraw at least the minimum amount (calculated based on your age, account balance and other factors) you face a penalty of 50% of what you should have taken out - a potential loss of thousands of dollars. So, take your RMDs before December 31. The financial services provider that administers your IRA or 401(k) can help you determine the amount you must withdraw. Time goes quickly - so don’t get left behind without having taken the steps to keep moving toward your financial goals.

LIONS & TIGERS & BEARS, OH MY! By Rev. Patrick Rogers, MDiv.

L

ions and tigers and bears, oh my!” We all know this line from the movie Wizard of Oz. The only thing scarier than that part of the movie were those flying monkeys. I still have nightmares about those darn monkeys and what they did to that poor scarecrow. Even though the Bible instructs us “do not be afraid,'' we have this fascination with being scared. From roller coasters and thrill rides to Halloween, we seek out the ultimate fright. And even though the Bible instructs us clearly and often, “Do not be afraid,'' fear is used by many churches as an instrumental motivator for conversion therapy by trying to force people to love God. Personally, I remember as a child hearing about a god who condemns people to an eternity dwelling in the “burning pit of hell” and God’s punishment of “fire and brimstone.” I was so scared by this conversion tactic, that at the age of 16, I walked down the church aisle not for God to save me because of God’s love for me, but for me to save myself from this type of condemnation. Due to God’s grace and opening my mind and spirit to God’s truth and learning to interpret the Bible in context, I now clearly understand that “love forced or based on fear is not love.” During October we celebrate one of my favorite traditions or holidays. Halloween! Halloween

scares many conservative Christian churches because they believe the holiday glorifies or celebrates the devil/satan. I love Halloween for many different reasons. It reminds us of our own mortality. It’s also a time to remember the saints and those who have passed to the next life. I remember as a child, I used to love choosing a scary costume. I wonder if it was because the church scared me so much it felt powerful to scare others. But my favorite part of Halloween is indeed dressing in costume. I choose to call it a legal day of self-expression. I find it ironic that one day per year, judgment (for the most part) is suspended and self-expression is not only tolerated, but also encouraged. The more one is self-expressed, you are even glorified and honored with awards at costume contests. What if we lived in a world where selfexpression was encouraged and celebrated every day? What if we lived in a world where judgment and fear was cast aside like the Bible instructs us to do? What if we lived in a world where we could be and gloriously celebrate who God created us to be? What if we lived in a world where people choose love over fear? As Louis Armstrong sang, “What a Wonderful World” it would be. Enjoy yourself and celebrate on Halloween Day. Then let’s get back to work on the other 364.

WISE ADVICE FOR PET OWNERS AN INTERVIEW WITH DONNA SCHWARTZ, DVM CORAL SPRINGS ANIMAL HOSPITAL By Rod Davis CEO BBB serving Southeast Florida and the Caribbean

A

s a pet lover and someone who learned the lessons about finding and caring for my dogs the hard way, I thought it would be helpful to reach out to one of the experienced veterinarians in our area. Donna Schwartz is a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) at Coral Springs Animal Hospital and I appreciate her taking time to share advice from her years of experience helping us care for our pets. Rod Davis: Dr. Schwartz, what advice do you have for people considering bringing a pet into their home and lives? Donna Schwartz: Deciding to take on the responsibility of pet ownership is a big decision and one that should not be treated lightly. Owning a pet is a big responsibility, emotionally and financially, so certain things should be considered prior to obtaining a pet. It is always best to do your research and decide which type of pet is best for you, your living situation and your family. If you have decided on a dog and you are not particular about a certain breed, then going to a shelter or a rescue is a good first step. Certain things you should ask yourself are; can I handle a puppy or are you looking for a dog that is older, more mature and perhaps trained already. Puppies are like babies. They require constant supervision. Housetraining and basic training are very time consuming. If you are interested in a certain breed, it is always best to consult your veterinarian and friends. Do your research on the breed that you feel you may want. A good source of reliable information can come from www.AKC.org. The American Kennel Club

72 | OutClique.com

is a valuable tool to find local (or not so local) breeders and upcoming shows or events that you may be able to go to in your area. Reputable breeders are registered with the AKC. Just because someone bred their dogs together, that does not make them a breeder. Certain breeds of dogs are not necessarily the best for certain environments or home situations. Certain breeds may be better with adults versus children. Some breeds for instance, are not good in certain types of weather. The short nose breeds (Brachycephalics) typically do not do well in extreme heat. Certain examples of these breeds are English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs or Pugs. There are some breeds of dogs that require more exercise than others, so if that is not something you can provide for the breed you choose, you may want to decide on a breed that is typically less active. Long haired dogs require a bit more maintenance and grooming than short haired breeds, so that is something else you should consider. Be sure the pet you are adopting or purchasing from a breeder is healthy and happy. Dogs are social creatures and typically enjoy being around people. The dog that is hiding behind the others may not necessarily be the best

one to choose because they are "quiet. It may indicate that they are fearful or environmentally sensitive, which could be a trigger for more behavioral issues in the future. In the state of Florida, a health certificate signed by an accredited veterinarian is required by law. No matter where you purchase or obtain a pet, check the source to make certain the animal has been well treated, raised with love in a humane and professional environment to avoid infectious diseases, parasites and congenital conditions prevalent in puppy mills and similar operations. You may have to pay twice on a pet that you purchase if high vet bills are required on top of the purchase of the pet.

RD

Taking care of your pet can be expensive, what are your thoughts about pet insurance?

DS

The cost of veterinary care can be very expensive, especially when a pet becomes ill. It is always advised that you insure your new pet, prior to any preexisting conditions. This will help take away the worry of the financial burden that can come along when the pet becomes ill. There are numerous insurance companies available these days that all have the same goal, to protect your pet and to protect the owner from large medical bills. It may be helpful to go to the American Animal Hospital Association's website (AAHA) to review the companies that are available. It's best to choose options with the lowest deductible and highest percentage of reimbursement, without a cap on the policy.

RD

We see advertising on TV every day about pet food options, how can a consumer find the best option for his/her pet?

DS

Pet food options are numerous along with a lot of over the counter supplements that make claims that they will improve the life of your pet. It is best to get the recommendations of what to feed your pet from your veterinarian. A lot of times, the recommendations are going to come from the 74 | OutClique.com

heart. They will be based on their own experience and what they feed their own pets. That decision is likely based on the scientific data that goes along with the diet recommendations, not from compensation from the company. Veterinarians do not get compensated from the pet food companies that they recommend. You want to feed a diet that has data to back up their claims. The choice should be made on fact, not opinion. It is advised that you do not start any over the counter supplements unless you speak to a veterinarian.

RD DS

How can pet owners find a good veterinarian?

Choosing a veterinarian is also a very important decision. You are bringing a new family member to them. Some owners prefer a smaller, one or two doctor practice without a lot of extra services, however, some owners prefer a larger practice that not only has general practice, but also has other specialties and emergency services available if needed. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) website is also a valuable tool to find an AAHA accredited hospital in your area. AAHA accreditation requires that hospital to practice a slightly higher than expected standard of care. Friends and neighbors are always a good source of information as well. The highest compliment any professional can get is a referral from another client due to their confidence level with a veterinarian or practice. Thank you, Dr. Schwartz, for taking care of our pets and for sharing information with our readers. As a reminder you can check out the experience of our community with veterinarians or pet insurance at www.BBB. org/SEFL to read reviews and any complaints and responses. BBB Accredited businesses also make a commitment to standards and working proactively with consumers and you can also search for businesses that have earned BBB accreditation on the website.

SEXUAL ENHANCEMENT AND ADVANCEMENT THERAPIES

AT THE GENESIS HEALTH INSTITUTE: GenWave, P-Shot, PT-141 Peptide, and Oxytocin Hormones

S

exual activity can be one of our greatest life experiences. Many start enjoying their sexual journey in adolescence and hope to enjoy it until the day we die. Most of us function perfectly into our forties when we start noticing some reduction to our sexual function. It doesn’t happen overnight, but occurs gradually. We don’t wake up to that joyful wood like we used to, our desire for sex begins to wane, it becomes more difficult to achieve or keep an erection, and sometimes takes longer to climax if at all. The bottom line is, most men over 50 years old will experience some form of lessened sexual function or erectile dysfunction (ED). Having practiced in Wilton Manors for over 12 years, we at Genesis Health Institute have helped many men increase their natural libido and sexual function with simple bio-identical testosterone therapy. Now there are more targeted treatments available to optimize all areas of sex, from functionality and endurance to sensitivity and pleasure that define what true mind blowing orgasms are. There are two physiological functions that create a healthy and strong erection. One is blood flow, the other is the ability for the penis to capture and hold forced blood creating the erection. The GenWave and P-Shot treatments correct and optimize both of these functions for advanced sexual activity. GenWave is a non-invasive procedure using high frequency, low intensity sound waves to increase blood flow to the penis by removing micro plaques. This procedure activates dormant cells and nerve tissue while also stimulating the growth of new blood vessels. Treatments are easy and comfortable, typically take less than 30 minutes to perform, and there’s no downtime.

The P-Shot is a non-surgical procedure utilizing the body’s own platelet rich plasma (PRP) which contains growth factors called Cytokines and Chemokines that stimulate the growth of new blood vessels, collagen, and cellular tissue to the penis. The improved tissue presence and circulation result in enhanced sexual function including firmness strength, sensitivity, arousal, pleasure, and overall size. This painless procedure also features no downtime and typically takes about one hour to perform. A couple of other sexual enhancements that greatly increase the quality and pleasure of your sexual experience, regardless of age, medical condition, or sexual function level, are the PT-141 peptide and a daily hormone supplement of oxytocin. PT-141 peptide is an amino acid peptide that increases sexual arousal and spontaneous erections. Unlike Viagra, Cialis, and other related medications, PT-141 doesn’t act upon the vascular system, but directly through the hypothalamus to increase desire and sexual satisfaction. Patients may use this peptide regularly or for specific sexual events and each dose typically works for three days. Patients using the peptide claim to have easily achieved spontaneous erections and with an enhanced climax experience. Oxytocin, also known as the “love” or “feel good” hormone, is produced in the body by the hypothalamus and released through the pituitary gland during sex, child birth, and when first falling in love. As with most hormones, the body produces less and less as we age. With daily supplementation, patients typically experience more easily achieved, intensified, and longer lasting orgasms along with greater levels of pleasure and sexual satisfaction.

At the Genesis Health Institute, we believe quality of life is key and offer treatments individually or by an all-inclusive Sexual Enhancement and Advancement Package that includes everything mentioned above. When you’re ready to rediscover great intercourse again, give us a call at (954) 561-3175 or check out our website at www.GHInstitute.com to schedule a complimentary consultation and learn more about these incredible sex life changing treatments.

FIVE IMPORTANT THINGS TO DO FOR WEIGHT LOSS

I

t’s seems like there’s some new “guaranteed” weight loss revelation every other week. But when you try it faithfully, the results don’t seem to be what was promised. There are tried and true weight loss tips that can help you lose weight with hard work and commitment. With a little inspiration, you’ll be on your way.

Get more sleep. Studies show that sleep deprivation is one of the strongest risk factors for obesity, linked to an 89 percent increased risk of obesity in children, and 55 percent in adults. It sounds astounding, but getting more sleep is effective and relatively easy to do with proper planning.

Yes, water is still at the top of the “do” list. Drinking water can boost your metabolism by 24-30 percent over a period of 1-1.5 hours, helping you burn off extra calories. Drink water about an hour before each meal and you may enjoy significant weight loss over time. Often when you feel hunger, it’s actually dehydration. But stay away from those fruit juices; daily consumption packs in a lot of extra sugar (even from fruit, sugar is sugar) and calories.

Exercise + weights. Cardio exercise is a great way to burn extra calories, while helping to relieve the stress of the day. Studies show that weight lifting can help keep your metabolism high, and prevent you from losing precious muscle mass that can happen while your body is in weight loss mode. Getting about 30-60 minutes of exercise a day is the goal. If you have less time in your schedule and are able to healthfully withstand higher impact work-out such as the elliptical machine or jogging, that is always more impactful. The key is in getting your heart rate up. You may want to invest in a personal heart rate tracker to help aid in your personal weight loss journey.

Drink black coffee. The natural caffeine in coffee actually helps boost your metabolism and contains powerful antioxidants. Of course, too much caffeine can make you jittery so pay attention to your limits and what your body is telling you. And remember to leave that coffee black; any extra sugar or flavoring will undo your hard work. Portion control is key. Counting calories is unnecessary when you simply pay attention to your portions. Use a small plate so you don’t feel you’re depriving yourself. Fill your plate with lean meat and fish (protein is important to losing weight), leafy greens, low-carb vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Go easy on the complex carbs and completely cut out fried foods and sweets. To get your sweet fix, opt for blueberries or strawberries.

Self care is more important than ever to positive weight loss outcomes. Only you know what feels right for your personal weight loss. The list above is simply tips to get you motivated and inspired. Your mindset and determination are most important. No matter what size you are, your health and how you feel about yourself is your focus. Your weight loss journey may be longer or shorter than others. Some days you may feel triumphant, and on other days you may “cheat.” Give yourself the grace to move on and get right back on your plan the next day. You’ll get there!

A HANDS-ON Interview with LMT John-Michael Gordon By John M. Hayden Photos by Sach | www.SachAdGroup.com 94 | OutClique.com

A

physically demanding job? Too much time spent stuck on I-95? A coworker who stresses you out with just the sound of their voice? There are a million things in this world that can rub you the wrong way. The way to beat them is to find someone to rub (massage) you the right way. And that’s where John-Michael Gordon comes in. The best pair of hands in Broward County has been working their magic on stressed out South Floridians for nearly five years. Out and proud, John-Michael’s a dedicated member of the LGBTQ+ community professionally, philanthropically, and personally. “I see clients out and about and they say, ‘hi.’ I see them at the bars, dining out, all over. I go out with friends and they say, ‘Oh, you know everybody.’” Although he’s only been a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) for a few years, he’s been dabbling in the relaxing arts since he was a kid. “I was probably preteen when I started giving family shoulder and feet massage. It didn’t really take off then. But over the years I’d give friends massages, shoulder massage, and foot massages.” The road to making this his chosen career was a long one that involved years in retail and working in theater. Sales wasn’t his thing, and while he loved working on stage productions, it took all his time and he was still struggling to get by. That’s when John-Michael gave serious thought to turning his childhood hobby into a profession. “When I left the theater industry, I had no idea where to go. I felt lost and confused. I kind of thought, ‘What about massage therapy? I’m good at it, maybe I could be great at it.’” So with self confidence in himself, and most importantly his hands, in February 2015 John-Michael headed back to school. After an intense eight months of training, John-Michael

got his certification in November 2015. A couple stints in professional spas, he decided to make his skills work for himself. But before settling down to cultivate a clientele in his hometown, he hit the road. “I traveled all over Florida. I started on the east coast of Florida, drove up to West Palm Beach, Port Saint Lucie, Orlando, Ocala, and up to Gainesville, then drove down the west coast helping people in Tampa, Sarasota, Fort Myers, and Naples. That was a fun summer.” About a month later, he did it all again. After getting practice across the sunshine state, he came home to start his business from scratch. “Getting into the business and starting it from the ground up, it was tough. It was a lot of work and it’s still a lot of work. Probably even more work now to keep it running.” That business is called, Relax In Peace Massage. While he serves a variety of clients, he especially enjoys meeting the needs of his gay customers. And his services are a hit with one of our local athletes. “I have a client that is part of the gay softball team. He gets work on his lower back and leg and also his arm for pitching. I work on his ankle too for running.” He also helps someone who practices another activity you wouldn’t think needs an LMT: a pianist. “I do a lot of forearm and wrist work. I do a lot of range of motion and working out the tension. Deep tissue and range of motion really really help separate what we like to call knots.” And that’s what makes John-Michael so special, there is no “one size fits all” massage therapy. He caters his skills to the needs of each individual. If you have your heart set on a hot stone massage, he’ll gladly provide one. But if you fill him in on the details of your life and what triggered the need for a massage, he may recommend some alternatives. For example, “We can recommend that your tension is coming from your back, and that’s OutClique.com | 95

probably what’s causing your headache. Instead of a relaxing massage, let’s do a little deeper in the areas that need some work, and we’ll throw in some range of motion to help stretch out that tension.” John-Michael can spot these needs because part of his training gave him some medical background. “We do learn a lot about blood and the endocrine system, bones, and bone marrow. A crash course in all types of cancer and medications too. We also ask what medications are you on? We now know what the body is going through.” He tries to make a point of being there for the clients on their schedule, not his. While most of us are toiling away on the nine to five, he’s going to the bank, grocery shopping, the gym, and taking care of other business so he can be available later in the day or even at night. “I like to be available nights and weekends because people work during the day. In a night I’ll probably see up to three appointments.” He’ll travel all over Broward to meet clients where and when they want, including one family who only has a little time early Sunday mornings. “So I worked out a deal every other Sunday, I’ll see you in the morning so you can be out by 11AM and enjoy your family time the rest of the day.” Getting on to John-Michael’s schedule takes some planning. He has a set of loyal customers but is always willing to take on new clients. John-Michael wants people book up to two weeks in advance. Setting regular appointments is highly recommended. Once you’re on the schedule, it’s totally worth it. John-Michael offers a lucrative membership program where you can buy multiple massages at two, four, and even six massages per month, cutting the price nearly in half. Veterans of massage therapy will feel like they’re upgrading, while newbies will feel comfortable right off the bat. There are no expectations other than to relax. Want to leave 96 | OutClique.com

underwear on? No problem. “It’s all comfort factor. They ask, ‘Should I be naked? Should I wear this or wear that?’ Honestly, I tell them whatever you wanna wear, keep it on, take it off whatever you want to do. I’ve had people wear clothes during the massage. I’ve had one person say ‘I wanna leave my pants on but I want you to work on my legs.’ So I do compression.” John-Michael says while some fear “going deep” as in deep tissue, they appreciate it at the end. “Most of my clients who request deep tissue work, and if you’re knotted up, it’s not fun to go through, but they do pay for it and they love it.” JM’s massage is very personal, and JohnMichael will work on what you need and avoid anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. “Feet, hands, and around the face, any work around the neck is a personal space. So I like to ask what they want worked on. Are there any additional areas, do you want your hand worked on, do you want your feet worked on, your face or neck worked on. Even sometimes the hair, the head and all. There’s scalp massage.” John-Michael also offers some massage etiquette for everyone. Be clean. You can’t come in from the beach and have sand all over you or come in from the yard and have dirt all over you. Be flexible. He has many regular customers but will juggle his schedule for emergencies or last minute changes. Give notice if you have to cancel. Life happens, just let him know if you have to change your appointment. Expect a professional massage. He’s an LMT, so expect a legitimate session. John-Michael’s passion for helping people isn’t limited to getting people to relax. John-Michael also works in the community with South Florida Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. The group is dedicated to the support, education,

and development of the LGBTQA+ community. John-Michael’s personally helped them raise thousands of dollars, and is their official South Florida massage therapist. Hey, stressed out sisters need to relax too! John-Michael also says the benefits go well beyond immediate relief and relaxation. “I’ve had clients that have been on antidepressants for a good couple of decades, and because of

massage they were able to get off of it, seeing me once or twice a week.” And in a toxic world, a massage done right can rid you of the poison. “Massage helps the flow of getting the toxins removed from certain types of areas. That release of toxins, the release of stress, anxiety, medication built up in your body. What we eat can build up and become toxic.” And John-Michael says that OutClique.com | 97

stays on top of new techniques and discoveries every two years. This year he took a class on advanced back and neck massage. “It allows me to learn new things, and then apply that to my clients. To make massage either easier on them or me or both of us. I learn new types of stretching, range of motion, better technique for deep tissue work so it’s not as painful.” And his skills are so well known, John-Michael does guest speaking at massage therapy schools, too. Being an LMT isn’t just a job for John-Michael, it’s a calling and he considers each client as an opportunity to help someone. can lead to lasting results. Even if you don’t see me for a month you’re still feeling it later. I do recommend the more often the better you’ll feel. I like to do cupping. That also draws out more toxins from the area and flushes it out.” That is a ton of benefits, and all you have to do is lay there. Of course if silence isn’t your thing, you can chat with John-Michael too, which he believes can be therapeutic as well.

“Six to 7 days a week helping people is just a passion of mine. People work to live. I live to work. The greatest gratitude is waking up every day knowing I get to help another person feel better and to do better. My motto is: Relax In Peace Massage, The Path to a Better You.”

“It does get pretty intense, the conversation, sometimes. I think talking about things and getting it out is very good for the mind and body. It actually does help. They literally talk themselves to sleep sometimes.” And John-Michael keeps to a strict code of client confidentiality. “The personal stuff that we talk about does not leave the table.” And even though the art of massage therapy has been around for 4,000 years, it doesn’t mean you’re getting the same massage Caesar or Oscar Wilde got back in the day. THE SOUTH FLORIDA SISTERS OF PERPETUAL INDULGENCE

HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN By Denny Patterson

T

he Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, also known as the Order of Perpetual Indulgence, is a charity, protest, and street performance organization that uses drag and religious imagery to call attention to sexual tolerance and satirizes issues of gender and morality. Founded in 1979 by a small group of gay men in San Francisco, they would wear nun attire in visible situations and use campyness to draw attention to social conflict and problems in the Castro District. Since then, the Sisters have grown throughout the U.S. and are currently organized as an international network of orders, which are primarily non-profit charity organizations that raise money for HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ related causes, and mainstream community service organizations, while promoting safer sex and educating others about the harmful effects of drug abuse and other risky behaviors. In January 2009, the South Florida chapter, the House of the Rising Sun, began and was introduced to the Fort Lauderdale community in March during Pridefest weekend. Striving to educate, care for the sick, and help others through charitable acts, these Sisters are dedicated to continuing the work started by the four men in San Francisco. I had the pleasure of chatting more with the House of the Rising Sun’s current Abbess, Sister Pinky Flamengo, about the organization, the work they do, and what it’s like to be a Sister. Denny Patterson: Thank you so much for chatting with me today, Sister Flamengo. How long have you been Sister? We are an Order of 21st century nuns dedicated to the promulgation of universal joy and the expiation of stigmatic guilt. Our ministry is one of public manifestation and habitual perpetration. We love to use big words [laughs]. Our mission is to encourage self-expression and diversity, engender acceptance, foster tolerance, and educate those within and outside of the LGBTQ community by promoting love and laughter through community service and fundraising, but ultimately setting the example that to sin is human, but to indulge without shame is divine. In a nutshell, we are a nonprofit who helps other nonprofits raise funds. We do this

in two ways: assisting other nonprofits with their nonprofits and putting on our own event with a designated nonprofit as a beneficiary. We concentrate mostly on nonprofits who are in line with our mission of service to the LGBTQ community and allies.

DP PF

Why did you join the Sisters?

This is a very long story [laughs]. When I first met the Sisters in San Francisco in the early 1980s, I regretfully did not consider joining until I moved to Fort Lauderdale in the mid-2000s. I have always been involved in the HIV/AIDS arena since I tested positive back in 1983. I got into counseling and working with Ryan White organizations. When I moved to South Florida, I decided that 20 years of that kind of work was enough and wasn’t going to do it anymore. However, I am a long-term survivor and have a message of hope to share so I couldn’t stay silent for long. A few years later, my roommate started dating a gentleman who just happened to be a Sister. Remembering them from my San Francisco days, I decided that here was an opportunity and a much more fun way to share my message of hope.

DP PF

Why do you think a group like the Sisters is necessary?

There are many great nonprofits who are very serious in getting out the messages of HIV/AIDS awareness and safer sex, as well as groups who fight for community rights from nearly every angle. The Sisters simply add another level of sparkle and color to an otherwise serious situation. The messages are still there, and the importance is not diminished, but it is shared in a more outrageous and glitter filled way.

DP

When the South Florida order began, how was it received by the community?

PF

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are an easily recognizable group no

matter where you travel. We are a worldwide phenomenon. Most people are happy to see us and readily join in the fun while supporting their own community. I was not among the first Sisters who worked so hard to start the South Florida house, but I know full well the intensity of work involved.

DP PF

What kind of impact has the Order been on the South Florida community?

DP PF

What kind of impact has the Sisters personally made on your life?

DP PF

It is great to see you have such a passion for the Sisters.

We are still a relatively small house and we have a very large area to cover, yet we seem to be loved and appreciated everywhere we go. The groups we are involved with genuinely seem to appreciate our assistance. Regretfully, we are too small to adequately attend all event requests, but we try to always make sure there is some Sister representation.

We are more than just a group of men who dress up as nuns and parade around. We are a loose knit family with a common goal; we are also a part of the very same community that we support. So, that mission statement applies equally to us. The South Florida Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence have been incredibly supportive of me during my crisis times. I hope we translate the love, support, and comraderies that I have received to our community at large.

Life is still a miracle. I believe that everyone deserves a joyful life. Sadly, this world we currently live in seems to have difficulty with that concept. As a Sister, I can embody that joy and irreverent, rule-denting fun. I can also share those laughs with others. I believe that every Sister house around the world shares that ability to lift people up when they are down. Marching hand in hand to defeat that negativity and then remind people to play after a fight well fought! OutClique.com | 101

DP

What are some of the House of the Rising Sun’s biggest accomplishments?

PF

Establishing and maintaining a group who is charged with the support and encouragement of the LGBTQ community and allies, from West Palm to Naples and Key West to Miami, is one of our biggest accomplishments. Lately, our collaboration with leather groups, kink groups, and trans groups has not only increased our own knowledge and sensitivity but also has enabled us to add our support to these expanding groups. It is okay to just be you, whoever you happen to be.

DP PF

Has the Sisters been confronted with any major challenges or backlash?

[Laughs] Ego and coulrophobia. We must always be careful when we are out and about because there are a lot of people who are either afraid of clowns or simply don’t like them, sometimes violently so. We are

not in the business of terrifying people and try to always be sensitive and give a wide berth to those whose phobia is triggered by the whiteface that we wear. As far as ego is concerned, every group has stronger and weaker members who need to be heard, but a balance must be kept and that is sometimes the hardest challenge. Not always from within, either.

DP PF

What is the number one lesson you preach?

Personally, I try to teach balance and equality and hope. Moderation in all things and don't forget to put some play time into your life. Couple those with the Sister message of joy and acceptance and I think we have a very powerful seed to plant in the world. SEEING GREECE WITH SOURCE EVENTS By Steven O. Evans, PhD

A

re you ready to see the world? Craig, Rafael, and the team at Source Events can make your trip the journey of a lifetime. I just returned from my first (yes, first) trip abroad. I’ve seen much of America and the Caribbean, but I was privileged to see the historic country of Greece aboard the Star Flyer clipper ship. Not your ordinary ship, this 170 passenger sailing vessel provided an amazing experience to the Greek Isles. I traveled with my Associate Editor, Arthur Wood III. Our journey began by flying from Miami, FL into Athens, Greece. Before the cruise, we spent the day touring the ruins of the Acropolis. Yes, it is just like what you see in the movies. It is a must-see for any trip to Athens. We stood right where some of the greatest minds thought about how they were going to create a society and a culture. We saw the Parthenon with its majestic and iconic columns. Built in 447-438 BC, it was the temple dedicated by the Athenians to the patron saint of their city, Athena Parthenos.

104 | OutClique.com

Next to it stands the Erechtheion, built between 421-406 BC. The temple’s most striking feature is it’s Porch of the Caryatids, consisting of six female statues, with the roof resting on their heads. Looking down the mountain, we saw The Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a stone structure theater completed in 161 AD, but later renovated in 1950. It includes a steep-sloped theater that was and still today is used as a venue for music concerts, holding up to 5,000 patrons. The theater’s current season includes concerts of Beethoven, Handel, Bach, Verdi, and even the music of Steven Speilberg. The next day we embarked on our clippership voyage. We toured the Greek Isles during our seven-day journey. If you’re going to see Greece, see it by ship. We saw up close the Greek architecture with its blue and white pallet, and signature barrel roof styles. You may have had Greek salads, gyros, and other traditional Greek cuisine before, but you haven’t really had them until you sit beside the Aegean Sea and dine with the locals.

On Santorini, we saw Akrotiri, a city from as early as the fifth millennium BC. It was amazing to see the walls of buildings, clay pots, beds, and even paintings from people that lived during that time. It was a glimpse into history, before we barely knew what history was. In Bodrum, Turkey we spent the day at a Turkish Hummam. Yes, an old style bath. But we were treated like royals. A hot steam room, a salt scrub, and probably my favorite, just some time to relax in a comfy wooden lounge chair in the rotunda. It’s an experience unique only to that region. During our stop at Mykonos, we experienced the famous Jackie O’ Beach Club & Resort. Oh yea, it was hip, gay, and super fun. We spent the day under wicker umbrellas with champagne watching the boys. We ascended to the restaurant and were treated to a delicious meal overlooking the beach. If you

go to Greece, you must go to Jackie O’ Beach Club & Resort! Don't forget to stop by the boutique for a chic new outfit. Arthur and I enjoyed making new friends on the ship. Meeting some of the guys (and gals) was some of the best parts of our trip. With a small ship, we had numerous opportunities to make new, life-long friends. There were some we already knew from Fort Lauderdale, but we also formed new bonds with other passengers. Craig and Rafi (the owners of Source Events) will make sure you enjoy every minute of your trip. They love what they do, and it shows. Travel is their passion, but taking care of their guests is what they do best. They will even join the parties, events, and dinners on the ship. They are not shy in making themselves known. So, as I always say, don’t sit at home. Get out. And enjoy every minute of it.

Visit www.SourceEvents.com or call (305) 672-9779 for more information on your next travel experience. They will make your trip the trip of a lifetime. I know. I’ve been.

LIVING THE LIFE OF YOUR DREAMS By Craig Smith

I

t’s been 22 years since I was a lawyer in San Francisco, CA practicing criminal law. It seemed like everyone was unhappy, wanting to be anywhere other than a courtroom. I often daydreamed of a different life, but I seemed confined by my career. I heard of a course called “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron, which she developed to help writers unblock their creativity. The two main exercises of the course are journaling three pages every morning and going out on a weekly artist date. The morning pages helped stimulate my imagination, and I found myself writing about traveling the world and going on new adventures. I met new friends who invited me to Africa, and the experience was lifechanging. There is something about going to faraway places that is transformational, changing the way we see ourselves and the world. I decided it was time to take a big leap of faith and leave the comfort of a law practice to find

108 | OutClique.com

work that I loved. I moved from San Francisco to Miami and started a non-profit foundation to raise funds for HIV/AIDS, which led to my producing large events for our gay community such as the Winter Party. Then I started working with a life coach, who quickly realized I still had many dreams that I hadn’t pursued. She reminded me that I had already changed my life once by leaving law and moving to Miami, and asked me life changing questions, “If I could do anything in the world, what would that be? What’s my next dream?” I imagined my first trip to Africa. How it felt to go on a safari for the first time. Cocktails at dusk by the watering hole, witnessing an amazing sunset with a herd of elephants by the watering hole. Hiking Table Mountain and flying in a helicopter over Victoria Falls, one of the wonders of the world. At that moment I envisioned creating inspirational adventures around the world. The possibilities are limitless, I thought, if we have the courage to pursue our dreams.

We could sail on tall ships around the world, hike Machu Picchu, cruise the Nile, dance under a full moon. Best of all, we could transform our lives by connecting with new people, places, and experiences. What would we discover in those places about ourselves, each other, and the world we live in? I also envisioned producing events that would bring people together while raising money for good causes. It was from that life coaching conversation and conversations with like-minded friends, who shared the vision of crafting unique and inspiring experiences, Source Events was born. We started with a tall ship sailing adventure, a journey to Africa, and a special event for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and over the last 15 years we have traveled to over 65 countries on 6 continents with thousands of travelers. One of my affirmations when I started the Artists Way, was that “what’s on the way is better than I’ve ever hoped and imagined”. That has certainly been true for me over the years, and I’m so grateful that that adventure of

my life in now creating adventures for our Source travelers. Source Events is about giving ourselves the freedom to experience our dreams. It’s about experiences that not only make our body feel good, but also allows our spirit to soar. We believe the world is full of beauty, surprises and unforgettable experiences. I’d like to personally invite you to live your dream, and join us on one of our Source Events. Our upcoming experiences include Wonder of China, the Splendors of Morocco, Treasures of Egypt, Dreams of Tahiti, Australia and Sydney Mardi Gras, Antarctica Luxury Voyage, Spectacular Iguazu Falls, and the 11th Annual Pride Cruise. If you have other dreams of travel, please let me know. Many of our trips have been imagined by our travelers. I’ve learned that we live in an extraordinary time, where we have a unique opportunity to live our dreams, to go anywhere and live the life we’ve always imagined. You are invited to join our family of Source Travelers. Explore the world and discover your source!

WHAT MAKES US CLIQUE

By Andy Armano | www.AndyArmano.com

This series focuses on individuals who give to our community and make a positive impact on the lives of others. When your passion is merged with a desire to improve the lives of others, wonderful things can happen. 110 | OutClique.com

Andy Armano: Have you always been interested in theater and the arts? Mark Kent: I'm one of eight boys. We grew up with a single mom. No alimony. No child support. And so we were very poor. But she was committed and very determined to keep us together and to make a go of it. She got us involved in community theater as a productive, positive outlet that we could do as a family and it didn't cost anything. It's something that I really locked into strongly when I was young. For me, there's something that is so self-

ark Kent is the Executive Director of the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida. In ten short years, the organization has taken its place in our community and stands shoulder to shoulder on the national stage with other gay choruses across the country. Mark brings his lifelong drive to bring people together to create a creative force and a community of voices. I had the wonderful opportunity to photograph Mark at The Grand Resort and Spa and get to know him and the chorus a little bit more.

emerging about the arts. I always say science and technology teach mankind what we can do, but the arts teach us who we are. It's the one thing that we can do for communities and for individuals to help them develop their sense of humanity, their feelings, their emotions, and their sense of expression. And I think that's just a vital part of everyone’s life experience.

AA MK

What do you see as the chorus’s role in society?

Our goal right now is to bring together as many people as possible in our community, particularly people who don't identify as LGBTQ, you know? We just did our Stonewall piece. And it was so amazing. The celebration of that milestone came to life through sound and music and visuals. And when you have a hundred and thirty men standing on a stage singing from their heart, "This is who we are and this is what we're about," it's a powerful and moving experience. And I love watching the audience. I love watching them come to tears and have them laugh along with us because then really we're not just audience and performers but OutClique.com | 111

we're a community. When they can sit and share an emotional experience with us, then they're not so far removed from who we are anymore. So that's what we do.

AA MK

How do you raise awareness for the greater community?

We do a lot of outreach performances. We've done the national anthem at the Miami Heat. We've done it for the Panthers. We've done it for the Marlins. I've got my eye set on the NFL next. It's just letting people see a group of gay men singing together and there is a palpable connection and brotherhood and spirit and energy that captures people's imagination. And so whether we're caroling in the middle of the mall, or whether we're doing a performance at the yacht club or something, we try and make sure that we're out in places where people will see us and we pique their interest.

AA MK

Besides the performances, what do you most appreciate about the group?

At times I find myself almost, believe it or not, speechless when I see how if someone's sick or in the hospital, the members make sure his needs are met: walk the dog, pick up people from the airport, things like that. They just take care of each other. And in many ways they even take care of me.

AA MK

What’s the future look like for you and the chorus?

It's our ten year anniversary. One of the things we're most proud of is that operationally in this short period of time we've become the 8th largest LGBT chorus in the country. We are just behind Boston and DC and New York and Los Angeles and a few others. And they've been around for decades, 20 years, 30 years! We're like the new kids, despite all the gray hair on me. We're young and new in terms of the overall gay choral movement. But we're ambitious, you know. We're really looking forward to continuing to grow and making a regional and national and international impact. It's exciting. Photo shot on location at

Photo by Andy Armano | www.AndyArmano.com

I have worked in the non-profit sector for a long time, but I have never seen this amount of love and support and affection and community that the members have for each other. It is like a real brotherhood. We even have a heterosexual guy who sings with us, and he's one of the number one people to

volunteer for things because there is such a tight bond among the guys. It inspires me on a daily basis to see them.

DAVID GOLDYN’S DELIGHTFUL COMEDY DADDY ISSUES By Carol Kassie

T

he Off Broadway hit, Daddy Issues, written and directed by David Goldyn, is returning to South Florida after a short but successful stint at Boca Raton’s Willow Theatre last March. The production will run from October 18 through November 3, 2019 at the Theatre at the Center for Spiritual Living in Oakland Park, FL. How far will a gay guy go to please his parents? Daddy Issues centers on Donald Moscowitz, (Elijah Pearson) an openly gay actor living in New York City in 1982. His overbearing Jewish parents (Elli Murray and David Goldyn) know he’s gay but that doesn’t stop them from demanding a grandchild. When Donald learns that Grandma Moscowitz (Vicki Klein) will double his inheritance if he produces a 122 | OutClique.com

grandchild, he enlists the help of the ten-yearold kid from downstairs (Michael Salvanto) to play his son from an experimental tryst he had in college. His two best friends Henrietta (Kayla Fainer) and Levi (Jesus Reyna), a drag star from the village, fight over who will play the birth mother, Mary Ellen McQuire (Erin Pittleman). When Mom and Dad show up what could go wrong? In 1985, Mark Patton landed the lead in the highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster film, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge. It was a dream come true, putting him on track to become a young Hollywood star. But instead Patton found himself facing a stark reality: he was a young, closeted gay man starring in a subversively queer film that was maligned by fans, failed at the box office, and destroyed his career. He retreated from show business and left the country, unaware of the growing reprisal of Freddy’s Revenge and the cult status it achieved in the years following its dismissal. Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street brings Patton out of hiding after 30 years, finally ready to embrace the film and confront his own demons by telling his story. Detailing the homophobia and Aids-phobia of 1985 as a closeted actor in Hollywood, Mark retraces his missteps on the pathway to stardom. He hits the road to set the record straight about the controversial sequel and the experience that halted his career before it even began. Confronting the cast and crew for the first time, Mark attempts to make peace with his past as well as embrace his legacy as cinema's first male scream queen. The documentary also examines how attitudes towards the controversial sequel have changed

along with the social climates of both Hollywood and society. Interviews with celebrities, film historians, local Fort Lauderdale industry personalities, and the original cast and crew — including co-stars Robert Rusler, Kim Myers and Clu Gulager, as well as Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund — round out this exploration into how the gayest horror film of all time ever got made. Full of wonderful film clips and celebrities, this is a defiant and triumphant story that nonetheless cautions today’s LGBTQ community that the nightmare isn’t over. Cinema Paradiso-Hollywood will open the festival with the Southeast premiere of La Bolduc, a biopic of Quebec’s folk singer Mary Travers Bolduc, directed by Francois Bouvier and starring Debbie Lynch-White. With the crisis of the 20s and 30s in the background, and the first impetus for the fight for women's rights, the screenplay traces Bolduc's life, her dazzling career, her difficult marriage and her touching relationship with her daughter. The second show that evening is the Southeast premiere of the documentary, Sex, Drugs, And Bicycles, which takes a look at Dutch social democracy and answers the question: Is having month-long double paid vacations, no fear of homelessness, and universal healthcare the nightmare we’ve been warned about. The answer may surprise you. Then again it may not. It really depends on a lot of factors outside our control. Other guests attending their films and parties later in the festival include: Justin Long with The Centerpiece film premiere of Safe Spaces followed by the Centerpiece Party, Kevin Pollak with the film Funny You Never Knew, classic actress Diane Baker will attend the Tribute screenings of Straight Jacket and Marnie, Joe Pantoliano and Marco Leonardi will attend the closing night premiere of From The Vine followed by the Wrap Party and Talia Shire will also be in town for the closing weekend for her film Working Man.

A NIGHT AT THE SYMPHONY WITH BRANDI SUTTON By Denny Patterson

H

ailed by the New York Times for her warm, ample voice, performance singer Brandi Sutton is excited and eager to perform with the South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) for its 20192020 season opener. The Masterworks Series I is scheduled for November 16-19, 2019, and audiences are invited to watch Sutton perform the magnificent works of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 and Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915. Embracing classical music during her undergraduate studies, Sutton began her professional career with a solo recital in St. Maarten. Her career has allowed her to tour and solo across the world, and she has been the recipient of several awards. I had the pleasure of chatting more with Sutton about her upcoming performance with the SFSO and passion for performing.

DP

Let’s begin by talking more about your upcoming performance with the SFSO. What can audiences expect?

BS

I will be singing Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, which I have done before. The symphony for the first few movements is just for the symphony, and then it has a soprano solo at the very end. I absolutely love singing it, but I am most excited about singing Samuel Barber’s Summer of 1915. I have never done it before, and it’s a piece for the longest time that people have been telling me I need to sing it, I need to learn it. So, finally I get a chance to do it. I am super excited. I will be just performing it with Richmond’s Symphony only a couple weeks before I come to Florida, so I get to do it twice. And I am excited

to work with Sebrina again. She is such a sympathetic conductor and I love working with her.

DP BS

That’s right! This is not your first time performing with SFSO.

DP BS

What would you say is the biggest challenge of being a performer?

DP BS

And I bet he’s your biggest fan.

Yes. I was there in January when I played Bess in their production of Porgy and Bess.

For me, it’s being a single mom. I have a seven-year-old son. I would say, hand in hand, being a single mom and keeping consistent because sometimes it’s feast or famine. If I’m not working, I’m not making money. Being a mom and dad, I need to make sure my son has everything he needs. Once you become a parent, your life kind of goes on the backburner so that your child can get everything they need. So, just having to do gigs and sometimes having to leave him or sometimes having to bring him with me and trying to figure out how I am going to keep him entertained during my rehearsals. But, he’s so used to it now, and he’s been in a couple operas with me which has been a huge blessing.

Oh, yes. Absolutely.

“BELL” OF THE BALL

AN INTERVIEW WITH “RING MY BELL” SINGER ANITA WARD

Y

By Gregg Shapiro

ou can’t blame Anita Ward for not liking to be considered a “one hit wonder.” That said, her chart-topping 1979 hit single “Ring My Bell” is not a bad song with which to be associated. As disco tracks of that era go, 150 | OutClique.com

“Ring My Bell” is one of the most distinctive. The amalgamation of Ward’s soulful soprano, the persistent chime, and funky disco beat all combined to make “Ring My Bell” one of the most unforgettable songs of the period,

and one that still has the power to get you up and dancing. Anita Ward is one of the legendary disco divas who will be performing on the second Ultimate Disco Cruise, a fiveday entertainment-packed cruise sailing from Miami to Key West and the Bahamas, from February 10-15, 2020. In advance of the cruise, Ward was kind enough to answer a few questions about her hit song and performing. Gregg Shapiro: June 2019 marked the 40th anniversary of your hit single “Ring My Bell” reaching the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also hit number one on the Disco and Hot Soul Singles charts. Do you recall how you felt when that happened? Anita Ward: I was truly amazed! I have always liked to sing. But when I heard it on the radio, I could not believe it. I said, “Wow! This cannot be true! This can’t be happening!” It was a very wonderful feeling, extremely [laughs].

GS

“Ring My Bell” stood out from the other cuts on the Songs of Love album, most of which were soulful ballads. When it comes to ballads and dance tracks, do you prefer one over the other?

AW

I definitely love ballads. Actually, I think, at the time I said I didn’t really like “Ring My Bell.” I think it’s because I was new in the business. I didn’t understand that you had to have something that was catchy [laughs]. We ended up releasing that one because everybody just loved that song. My goodness! And I love it also now [big laugh].

GS

Shortly after “Ring My Bell” reached number one, the unfortunate Disco Demolition took place in Chicago. Do you remember how it made you feel as an artist associated with that musical genre?

AW

Well, I didn’t feel very well. As a matter of fact, the phone stopped ringing. Really, it did. I did not have nearly as much work because of this attack upon that genre of music. But I’m a survivor.

GS

In February 2020, you will be one of the divas performing on the second installment of the Ultimate Disco Cruise. What does that mean to you?

AW

It’s a tremendous honor. There are some perks to being older! To still be called to participate in that is a real honor. I’m looking forward to it.

GS AW

I like it! It probably is good for your ego, a little bit, to see all those people when the venues are so large. The more intimate type setting, if you want to feel closer to the guests in the audience, is always better. They both are good, although I probably prefer the more intimate events.

GS

Does performing on this kind of themed event, with others from the world of disco, feel like a family reunion?

GS

AW

AW

GS AW

I write for several LGBTQ publications and I was wondering if you made any appearances at gay discos at the time that “Ring My Bell” was in heavy rotation? Yes, I did. Certainly, I went to some of the bars. I can’t remember the names, so they may not have been big-name type of venues. Yes, I certainly did. They accepted me so well. It was an additional opportunity to be able to be a part of all of that scene.

What do you like best about performing in front of a live audience?

Yes! That’s a good way to put it. It does because every time I get to meet some of the people who are on the scene it makes me know how blessed I’ve been to be a part of this. Yes [laughs], it really is like a reunion. How are your sea legs?

I usually do pretty well. It’s no problem at all. I get mesmerized by that water. That can be something. It’s so beautiful! OutClique.com | 151

THE DISCO DIVA’S DIVA

AN INTERVIEW WITH THE LEGENDARY LINDA CLIFFORD By Gregg Shapiro

A

Gregg Shapiro: Linda, I’d like to begin by congratulating you on the expanded CD reissues of your albums If My Friends Could See Me Now, Let Me Be Your Woman, Here’s My Love and I’m Yours. What does it mean to you to have these albums available again? Linda Clifford: Honestly, it kind of jump-starts your whole life. At one time, certainly when I was younger, and these things came out. What was it, two or three years ago [big laugh]. More like 40. You’re young and you’re out there on the road, this is so much fun. When you get a little bit older, you realize, “Wow, I had some amazing things happen and I did some great things.” Now, I’m so much more appreciative of the career that I’ve had and the love that I’ve received from people over the years. It means an enormous amount to me and I’m so grateful to the record company, Blixa Sounds, and everyone involved in putting everything together.

s disco divas go, few are as downto-earth, warm and genuine as Linda Clifford. More than 40 years after the release of her breakout album If My Friends Could See Me Now was released, featuring the chart-topping dance club hit title track, Clifford is still hard at work, regularly touring as one of the First Ladies of Disco (along with Martha Wash, Evelyn “Champagne” King and Norma Jean Wright) and performing at various festivals and fairs. Four of Clifford’s most cherished albums, the aforementioned If My Friends Could See Me Now, as well as 1979’s Let Me Be Your Woman and Here’s My Love, along with 1980’s I’m Yours, have all been released in remastered expanded editions from Blixa Sounds. I recently had the honor of speaking with Linda about her career, reissues, and the Ultimate Disco Cruise 2020. career, when you played a dancer in the movie version of Sweet Charity?

LC

That cover version was an actual surprise. The song was mentioned by one of the secretaries at Curtom. She said, “You should do a disco version of this song.” Nobody knew that I had been in the movie. She said that to me and I wanted to slap her. “I will not do that!” Here I am thinking Shirley MacLaine, Gwen Verdon, Broadway, fabulous people. She wants me to turn it into a disco song? I said, “There’s no way you can do that and do it well!” They went ahead and recorded the track and they played it for me. I went, “Holy crap! This is great [laughs]!” That’s my song!

GS

“Red Light” from the 1980’s Isaac Hayes-produced album I’m Yours was also featured in the Oscar-winning movie Fame. What did it mean to you have a song featured on a best-selling movie soundtrack?

LC

To me, it was amazing. It meant the world to me. I actually recorded the song for the soundtrack when I was working with (Oscar-winning songwriter) Michael Gore. I was seven months pregnant. I was like, “Come on baby, help me push these notes out” [laughs]! When the movie came out, my husband said, “Before you go into the hospital, you’re going to see this movie so you can see your name on the screen [laughs]!” We went to see Fame and I had no idea where the song was going to be placed. I didn’t know if it was going to be background music or something. When they started the film and the intro came up, I was like, “Oh, my gosh! They’re actually auditioning to my song!” It was incredible!

GS LC

Did you ever have a chance to meet Michael Gore’s sister Lesley Gore?

that’s ever been created. But, my God, use your brain. When you have that kind of platform, a radio show that reaches hundreds and thousands of people daily, don’t come out and encourage this destruction. There were albums flying all over the field. When I saw it, all I could do was cry. I thought, “This is really horrible.”

GS

Of course, the ultimate revenge is that disco outlasted Steve Dahl in popularity and endurance. As proof, we have the Ultimate Disco Cruise, the first of which set sail in February 2019 from Fort Lauderdale with stops in Key West and Cozumel, and featured performances by Gloria Gaynor, Thelma Houston, Evelyn “Champagne” King, France Joli and others. What do you think of that concept?

LC

Chicago, where you have lived for many years, was the site of the 1979 Disco Demolition at Comiskey Park. As both a Chicagoan and a disco artist, do you remember how that made you feel?

I kind of love it! I absolutely love it. I know that a lot of musical cruises are happening now and they’ve been doing that with the jazz market for years. It’s been very successful and very helpful to the musicians who might not get the major concert venues like some other acts do. They have this venue that they can go to and have fun doing what they do. It gives people a chance to enjoy the music. I think the whole idea of a disco cruise is pretty awesome, especially since I’ll be doing it!

LC

GS

I never got to meet Lesley. She had so many wonderful songs that I used to sing [laugh]. No, I never got a chance to meet her. But he was wonderful to work with.

GS

Devastated. I was devastated. I thought, “This man doesn’t care what he’s done!” Aside from putting all of us out of work and totally dissing a major part of the music industry, he destroyed (the baseball) field. To this day, he still talks about it like he’s proud of it. I never met him, but I think if I did, I’d probably punch him right in the face.

GS LC

He would deserve it.

I’m still angry about it. I think it’s so unfair and so careless of someone to do that, and on that scale. Sure, I don’t expect everybody to like disco, or every type of music

What does it mean to you to be performing on the Ultimate Disco Cruise 2020, which sails from Miami, with stops in Key West and Nassau?

LC

I’m so delighted! First of all, I love cruising. It’s a great way to vacation. This is going to be a bonus, to go on this cruise ship and do a show for people who are specifically there to see and hear your music. It’s one thing to do a show and people are there because someone dragged them along. But this way you know people are coming specifically for that music, to have fun, to enjoy some of the things they maybe did in their youth. OutClique.com | 153

GS

Along with Martha Wash and Norma Jean Wright, you are performing on the cruise as one of the First Ladies of Disco. What has the experience of being one of the First Ladies of Disco been like for you?

LC

It’s been incredible. Like a lot of acts from that era, a lot of us were overlooked by agencies and promoters with the whole disco is dead thing (that you mentioned), which is obviously not true. A lot of people didn’t work and then suddenly we’re popular again because of many issues. I think the books written by James Arena (Legends of Disco and The First Ladies of Disco) were a huge help for many of the disco acts. He has since gone on to write other books about disco and the people in that industry at that time. For me, it’s like a second round of my career.

GS LC

What do you like best about performing in front of a live audience?

It’s so funny because I’m on Facebook as most people are. I get letters and notes from people all the time about when we met, like 40 years ago, and what dance they did to a particular song of mine. That kind of thing. When I get to see them in person, we get to talk about the stories we discussed online. It’s fabulous. I love meeting the people who loved the music. It brightens my day.

GS

Does performing on this kind of themed event, with others from the disco domain, feel like a family reunion?

LC

154 | OutClique.com

It really does. Sometimes it’s even better [laughs]. You know how family can be [laughs]. But you get to see people you haven’t seen in ages. You get to talk about what happened back in the day. You’re dancing to the music that brought you so much joy. What could be better? Maybe winning the lottery.
