Dear Friends and Readers, Someone once said, the main difference between research and plagiarism is citations. So I will give credit to my title to one of our local theologians, the Rev. Dr. Durrell Watkins, Senior Pastor of Sunshine Cathedral. In one of his recent sermons, he challenged us to face difficulties with peace, rather than going to pieces.1 It’s so easy to panic when things seem to fall apart, the diagnosis comes in, the check doesn’t arrive, or the relationship falls apart. But as Dr. Watkins explained, there is a world of possibilities to come. The motto is, “We are a different kind of church, where the past is the past and the future has infinite possibilities.”2 Another dear friend of mine always reminds me, “You have survived 100% of your worst days.”3 Be of the mindset, this is going to be your year. Ring in the New Year From Nashville When the Star-Studded Entertainment Special “New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash” Returns to CBS on Saturday, December 31, 2022

C

ountry music’s hottest superstars return to celebrate the new year when CBS presents New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash, Saturday, December 31, 2022 on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+*. The inaugural broadcast in 2021 peaked with 5.51 million viewers in the midnight hour. Originating from downtown Nashville across multiple locations, the star-studded special will be packed with high-energy performances celebrating the excitement and anticipation of a new year. The first round of performers announced to ring in the new year include Brooks & Dunn, Kelsea Ballerini, Little Big Town and Zac Brown Band. Additional artists and information about the special will be announced at a later date.

Music City has built an outstanding reputation for throwing the most musical New Year’s celebration and country’s biggest party. The five-hour celebration features nearly 50 performances from locations across the city, including the main stage in Nashville’s Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park. The broadcast will cross multiple time zones, with the traditional countdown at midnight ET, culminating with the renowned Nashville Music Note Drop and fireworks at midnight CT. New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash is executive produced by Robert Deaton and Mary Hilliard Harrington in partnership with the Nashville Convention and Visitors Corp. The special will be directed by Sandra Restrepo.

Lexus Care Advice from Professional Detailers

I

nside and out, your Lexus vehicle is a sleek expression of elegance that’s carefully designed to protect itself against the rigors of use and travel. But because it’s also part of your life, your Lexus is still, no doubt, occasionally subjected to normal spills and smudges that come from a well-used vehicle that belongs on the road—be it for a getaway or daily routine. Many Lexus dealerships, of course, have skilled detailing teams who can help spruce up your vehicle (and tackle the effects of messy situations like, say, a leaking grocery bag). But for those of you who enjoy regularly cleaning your Lexus, or are wondering what to do when messes happen, know that there are a few recommendations when it comes to cleaning your vehicle. Carpets: The number one rule with most Lexus carpet or carpet floormat spills, says one Lexus dealership detailer,

is to avoid letting the liquid dry out—drying is what leads to staining. Lexus detailing teams can often clean most liquid spills as long as you take some immediate steps. First, gently blot the area with an absorbent cloth to get as much of the liquid out, then lightly apply dish soap with a soft dish towel (avoid bathroom cleaners or anything with ammonia). Then blot the area again with a wet cloth to remove the soap and keep the area damp with a wet rag until you can get your vehicle to the Lexus dealership. For sticky materials that have hardened into the carpet or floormat, you can often remove it by gently—but firmly—rubbing a credit card back and forth over the area, holding the card at a slight angle. Also know that there’s a type of material that’s usually impossible to remove without leaving a trace: high-fructose corn syrup, which is often found in candy, fruit juices, and sports drinks. It


can actually damage carpet fibers, which is why Lexus detailers recommend you avoid bringing anything sugary, especially sports drinks, into your vehicle interior. Windows: A common tip from many Lexus dealership detailing teams is to avoid washing windows in direct sunlight, which often dries the cleaner too quickly and causes streaking. And to clean your windows like a pro, liberally spray a glass cleaner onto a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth or a waffle cloth (a waffle-patterned cloth is available at auto parts stores)—not directly on the windows. From there, lower the windows and clean the top edges, which is a place many drivers ignore but pro detailers generally clean first (hidden grime gets trapped up there over time). After that, clean the inside and outside of windows with the cleaner-soaked cloth, wiping each surface dry with a separate lint-free microfiber cloth. Seats and trim components: For both hard cabin surfaces (like wood trim) and soft materials (like seats, cloth covered trim, and dashboards), also lightly spray the cleaner onto a microfiber cloth to avoid getting cleaning liquids into vents, button seams, or speakers. For these non-glass interior surfaces, both hard and soft, many Lexus detailers recommend using a citrus-based all-purpose cleaner (non-concentrated), which is gentle on Lexus interiors. Make sure to avoid furniture polishers and common brand-name auto-interior cleaning products, which can damage Lexus dash materials. Screens: Fingerprints are obviously the most common reason screens need cleaning, and when sprucing up your vehicle’s display screen, avoid using ammoniabased cleaners, which can damage the surface. Most Lexus detailing teams recommend glass cleaners, as long as they don’t contain ammonia. As with windows and other interior elements, professional Lexus detailers first spray the cleaner onto a lint-free microfiber cloth, not directly onto the surface—in this case, just one light squirt. Then wipe the screen. Also

never use a microfiber cloth that’s been dropped on the ground. It’s a good practice when cleaning any Lexus component, but it’s especially vital for screens, which can be easily scratched by unseen particles picked up from the ground. Wheels: Tires can be cleaned with soap and water, but Lexus wheel spokes will look their best with some special considerations. Brake dust can mix in with road grime to build up in the smaller spoke spaces, which makes them hard to clean well. Here’s how the pros do it: liberally spray wheel cleaner directly onto the spokes, then insert two fingers into a cleaning rag (cleaning mitts and waffle cloths work well) and firmly clean each crevice with one or two fingers. Once the area is clean and wiped dry with a towel, consider applying a brake-dust barrier (your Lexus dealership may have a recommended brand for purchase, and you’ll also find good ones at automotive stores). Sticky exterior materials: To remove sticky materials from your vehicle’s body, such as road tar or tree sap, you can use an auto-body solvent or lacquer-based cleaner (available at auto parts stores). First, pour some cleaner onto a clean cloth and wipe the affected area gently until the residue has been fully removed, and repeat this step as needed. Another option is a cleaning clay (also available at auto parts stores). How it works: gently rub the clay over the sticky material, which will help extract it without damaging the body. Some polishing may be needed afterward. A soft microfiber cloth—free of debris—can be used with some polishing wax to finish the affected area. Of course, if you have any questions or concerns about Lexus cleaning, mention it to your Lexus service advisor, who can explain Lexus dealership cleaning and detailing options (which may vary between dealers). Lexus dealerships generally recommend an annual professional detailing session, and their skilled detailing teams can take care of more advanced issues, like polishing interior trim elements on older models and sanding out headlamp scratches.

Late Night Piano Bar Comes to Tropics Grille! By Steven Evans, PhD

The newly crowned After Hours Lounge and Piano Bar, located in the Tropics Grille event space, will not conflict with an already thriving dinner time schedule with most shows starting around 7:00pm. After Hours Lounge and Piano Bar will begin their shows at 9:00pm and run until at least 11:00pm, though shows may run later depending on growing popularity. The new space will seat roughly 40-50 guests with some shows featuring seating at the actual piano! The room is launching programming with some heavy hitting headliners like Jennifer McClain, Miss Bouvèé, and Rick Leonard. Jennifer McClain will bring her popular Cast Party on Mondays starting at 9:00pm. There, you can see invited guests that are local and from afar. You may also see some cool giveaways and with the national tours back up and running, you never know just who may stop by and sing while they are in town! Jennifer will be accompanied by a rotating roster of pianists, but for this month, most shows will feature Eric Alsford.

Tropics Grille has been a leader on The Drive in hosting live music seven nights a week in their popular cabaret room. There you can see live instrumentalists ranging from guitar to drums to piano and live vocalists taking your requests.

Additional shows will be added in the coming months. Reservations are highly recommended due to the limited seating availability. For reservations call 954-530-3361, make sure to ask for reservations to be in the Lounge and Piano Bar for guaranteed seating at showtimes (9:00pm). Jennifer McClain’s Cast Party on Monday features half off entrees. Miss Bouvèé’s Dragaret Piano Bar Show on Wednesday features half off burgers and chicken sandwiches. W

hen Leila Cox takes the stage, you know it, and she owns it. That’s not an easy task when you’re sharing the stage with four other fierce performers like she does every Monday at The Pub in Wilton Manors. The Pub has long been a hub for live entertainment, and their lineup is anchored by the venerable Stilettos show. “I’ve been doing drag for ten years,” she told OutClique. “This is the big opportunity that you, as a drag queen, have been waiting for. A bar to support you and open the door for you. Your name is up there. The community knows you up there. You know the community, you help the community. They know you outside and inside of drag.” Leila joins Candy Cox, Mercury Rising Cox, Sharde’ L Ross, and Verandah Lanai at 8PM every Monday to bring a show that’s always unpredictable. Each brings their own style to the stage, and Leila taps into her Latin heritage to stand out.

I also try to bring out of town friends who come to visit us.” She jokes that sometimes she has no choice but to look beyond South Florida for talent. “I always have the last Monday, and by then I don’t have any other choice. By then all the girls have been taken!” Now pageant season is here and it’s a bittersweet time for Leila. She’s ending her reign as Miss Pub, and says it’s been an amazing year. “It’s been amazing. I’ve changed. It was a big open door for me. I can see myself before and after. It was a big, big year for me and I’m proud. I’m really proud.” But as one reign ends, new titles await. While she plans to take a bit of a break, she also just got fitted for two new dresses.

“We try to do a mix, a little bit of everything. Spanish, like myself. A little bit of Latin, and I think that’s what they like.”

In the end, she says all the fun and personal fulfillment is derived from the energy and love of her fans.

It’s that part of her personality that’s shaped her performances more and more in recent years.

“Thank you guys! Thanks for coming to us. We’re here for you. You haven’t seen the last of me!”

“After JLo at the Super Bowl, the Latinx presence became big. That’s how I started more with Latin music. I do a couple numbers in the show, so a little bit of everything for everybody.” The show has been a Monday night staple in Wilton Manors for seven years. After getting its footing in a couple other locations, it found a permanent home at The Pub a few years ago. “It’s a classic show and I think that’s why they keep coming. I was new when it was at Scandals, then we transferred here, and it was a different dynamic, the crowd is different, it’s a different energy.” One way Leila and the girls keep it fresh is they take turns as hostess each week and are in charge of bringing in guest queens. “I love to open the door for new faces. Not beginners, but

B

y now, most people know that tax incentives and other programs exist to promote solar energy use. Whether you are considering solar energy because you believe it is good for the environment, you want to gain control of your energy costs or you are seeking a backup energy source when the traditional energy grid goes down, there is a lot to know before proceeding. As someone who is currently going through the process to install a solar energy system, I found this guide and other resources especially helpful. The motivation for me to go solar is to have a backup energy system and to lessen my environmental footprint. Additionally, as I look to add a hybrid or fully electric vehicle next year, the ability to power that car with clean energy sealed the deal. Most tips start with a recommendation that consumers get an energy audit to see how a home can be quickly modified to use less energy. The tips can include better insulation, more energy efficient windows and appliances or systems that can be controlled with new technology to improve efficiency (e.g. adjustable thermostats). Consumers can schedule a free energy audit with Florida Power and Light (FPL) by calling 800 342 5375. According to the Department of Energy, consumers will save 20-40% of their energy costs due to air conditioning by replacing an old unit with a new more efficient version. There are many different types of solar panels, converters and battery storage units. As a consumer, you will not be an expert in everything, but it is important to know enough to compare the options and pricing proposal to obtain the best offer to deliver a system that meets your needs and expectations. To begin the process, obtain your annual usage information from FPL (or your provider). The size of the unit recommended by contractors should be based on your specific usage. You can obtain this information by calling FPL or using their online portal to access your monthly usage: www.fpl.com/my-account/residential-dashboard. html#viewResDashboard BBB makes it easy to get quotes from quality providers by going to bbb.org/get-a-quote. Living in Florida, it is important to receive quotes that use solar panels/systems built to withstand high windstorms. Additionally, as you consider the provider, some businesses offer installation

and warranties, while other businesses may be able to provide monitoring and repair services. Depending on your preferences, it is important to select the best provider for your immediate and ongoing needs. As part of their review to provide a solution that will work for you, the businesses should: • Conduct an onsite review of your property so they can best determine the configuration of the system • Evaluate your roof. Make sure it is sufficiently new and in good condition before moving ahead with a solar installation. • Review your electrical panel to determine if it is sufficient to handle the solar system or if additional costs are need to prepare your electrical panel for the solar unit • Determine the lay out of the system to maximize efficiency and meet your aesthetic preferences Once you have the proposals from businesses and you are comparing options, take into consideration all “value” added parts of each. Review the efficiency ratings for the panels and all other differences (e.g., warranty and service offerings) to identify the best value product meeting your preferences. Solar energy projects will need to be approved by your local permitting office. The business should incorporate those costs into the proposal. The timeframe for any project should include the permitting process, ordering and receipt of the components of the system and installation. Supply chain problems continue to be a problem for my parts. Explore with your potential contractor how quickly he/she can deliver on the parts needed for your project. BBB also recommends that payments be spaced out in any contract with specific milestones to tie funds to actions (e.g. signing of contract, approval of permits, completion of project, inspection and approval by the city/county inspector, fully operational system, etc.). It is also a good idea before making a final decision, to obtain the name of a customer in proximity to your home to see if they are willing to share their feedback with you, and if you feel it necessary, visit the project. Federal Tax Credits exist for homeowners going solar. Differences vary if the home is used as a primary residence or vacation home. Additionally, the credit is nonrefundable. That means you will not get a check in the mail for the credit. You can use the amount of credit to offset federal taxes owed. You may want to consult with your tax professional prior to proceeding to evaluate how the tax credit applies to your situation.

Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain.  The most common side effects of BIKTARVY in clinical studies were diarrhea (6%), nausea (6%), and headache (5%).

 Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. Your

healthcare provider will test you for HBV. If you have both HIV-1 and HBV, your HBV may suddenly get worse if you stop taking BIKTARVY. Do not stop taking BIKTARVY without first talking to your healthcare provider, as they will need to check your health regularly for several months, and may give you HBV medicine.

o quote the Father of India, Mahatma Gandhi, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Wilton Manors resident Don D’Arminio and his partner of 25 years, Marc Martorana, have been doing exactly that. Initially meeting at a friend’s dinner party in New Jersey, the couple moved to Wilton Manors 14 years ago. “We would visit Wilton regularly for vacations and long weekends, and we fell in love with the city,” D’Arminio says. “We wanted to own a piece of paradise, so we bought our first condo here in Wilton Manors. We went from a one-bedroom condo, to a two-bedroom condo, and now finally to a house.” Because of their strong sense of giving back and desire to work for a better future, the duo have been involved with several local charities since coming to Wilton Manors. They typically host five to six fundraisers each year. According to Martorana, he and D’Arminio have always been community oriented. “We have nothing to gain from it other than to give back,” he says. “We’re both retired, so we don’t have any work agenda. We are just opening up our home and hearts. It’s what we can do to give back. After we bought our home in 2011, I said to Don, ‘There are a lot of organizations here. I’m sure they need our help.’ So, we started to do fundraising for them.” The tremendous impact D’Arminio and Martorana are making is not going unrecognized. “We hosted a holiday party at our home for The Pet Project’s 20th anniversary,” D’Arminio explains. “While this was not a fundraiser, we got a call three days later letting us know that our event generated over $22,000 in donations.”

D’Arminio and Martorana are bringing plenty of experience from their former careers to their volunteer work. D’Arminio spent more than 25 years working as an accounting and tax professional and served on the Wilton Manors Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Board for six years. Martorana worked for over 30 years managing large event venues in the Manhattan and New York Tri-State area. Other charities and organizations that have benefited from D’Arminio and Martorana’s generosity include the South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), Equality Florida, the National LGBTQ Task Force, Plays of Wilton, Island City Stage, OUTshine Film Festival, the Stonewall National Museum & Archives, the World AIDS Museum, and SunServe, which Martorana says is a very special organization to them. “After cochairing SunServe’s Gala last year, I was very grateful that they asked me to chair their upcoming event again in March,” Martorana says. D’Arminio also serves on the board of the Manor Grove Village Two Condominiums. He currently serves as vice president after previously having served as president for eight years. Because of their tightly packed schedules, one would think the pair would hardly have time for anything else. However, that is most certainly not the case. D’Arminio has thrown his hat into the political ring and is campaigning for Wilton Manors City Commissioner. “I am a resident that wants the best for our city,” he explains. “It’s kind of ironic that when I retired from Scholastic, the book publisher, I was the director of their state and local tax department. So, I’ve actually been working with state and local governments my entire career. The difference this time would be, rather than being on the side as a business partner, I would be on the opposite side working for the government that works with our business partners.

I’ve also served for the last six years on our city’s Planning and Zoning Board. I was elected to Vice Chair of the Board by my colleagues, and then finally Board Chair,” D’Arminio continues. “It’s a humbling experience when you’re not only appointed to three consecutive two-year terms by your City Commission, but then you’re also elected by your peers to serve as Board Chair. My experience on the Planning and Zoning Board has given me an in-depth understanding of not only how our city operates, but also the code that governs our city. My work experience working with state and local governments, coupled with my six years of experience on the Wilton Manors Planning and Zoning Board really gives me a unique skill set that positions me to be our next City Commissioner.” If elected to the four-year term, D’Arminio hopes to tackle key items affecting Wilton Manors, such as infrastructure, roads and safety, adopting a sustainable budget, and maintaining the integrity of our single-family neighborhoods. “I’d like to focus on our traffic and walkability, making sure that our streets are safe for other modes of transportation besides cars,” he says. “And we’re going to need added focus on our city’s infrastructure. There’s a lot of potential development planned for Wilton Manors. Our city recently approved new changes to our city code which requires us to make sure our infrastructure can handle it. As an accountant, I tend to focus on the numbers, and we currently have a city budget that is not sustainable. We need to make sure that we adopt a sustainable city budget and make the quality of life better for all residents.” Martorana thought the idea of his partner running for office was brilliant. “I thought it was terrific,” he exclaims. “Don will be a gift to Wilton Manors. He knows so much about the city and he’s so respected for his knowledge of the city code. That’s what drives our city, and I believe the residents will fall in love with Don. I’m playing my role as the supportive spouse and doing whatever I can. W

hen people envision aging, they generally like to think of the concept as far away and in the distant future. They think that people who are in their golden years are weak, frail, and no longer contribute to society. However, in our modern age of medicine and technology that archaic thought on aging has changed. The fact is people are living longer than they have ever before. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the average life expectancy of American women is 81 years, and 77 years for men. United Income, a financial planning and investment management company targeted to those ages 50 to 70, informs that, “As of February 2019, more than 20 percent of adults over age 65 are either working or looking for work, compared with 10 percent in 1985.” Accessing high-quality healthcare is especially difficult for immigrants living in the United States. ayne Brady, the true multi-hyphenate whose career path and personal life journey have helped him see the world in a unique way, is always on a mission to create new content across different platforms that showcase innovation and inclusivity in fun and powerful ways.

As the first person to win Daytime and Primetime Emmys in two consecutive years, Brady has an impressive TV resume that includes Whose Line Is It Anyway?, The Masked Singer, and the upcoming Showtime series American Gigolo, each spotlighting different aspects of his immense talent. Additionally, he is heavily active behind the scenes wearing the hats of host and executive producer for Let’s Make a Deal, Game of Talents, and Comedy IQ, which he also co-created. Recently, Brady reprised his role as Lola in the awardwinning Broadway hit Kinky Boots at the Hollywood Bowl, alongside Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears. He took some time to answer some questions for OutClique. Denny Patterson: Let me begin by asking, how excited were you to reprise your role as Lola in the Hollywood Bowl production of Kinky Boots? Wayne Brady: If I weren’t excited, I wouldn’t have done it! Plain and simple. I love everything about Kinky Boots, I love the role of Lola/Simon, and I mean that. It’s not hyperbole. I love the messaging, I love the movie, and I always knew it was going to be a show in my heart. When I got an opportunity to step in after Billy Porter, I knew it was something that I could check off my life’s bucket list. Right now, I think we need shows like Kinky Boots that spread a message of acceptance and love.

DP: Why do you think Kinky Boots is such a profound and impactful show?

WB: To me, I think it is very impactful, and I’ve had to school

Then it’d be a story about a gay man, but his sexuality has nothing to do with the show. In one scene, he actually gets to jump on Don and tells him that. It has nothing to do with it. What it has to do with is the acceptance piece. That no matter who you are, no matter who you love, no matter what

you look like, no matter what you identify as, no matter who you go home at night with, no matter the skin that you wear, you deserve love, compassion, and understanding, and that is just baseline for the human existence. Unfortunately, we lost track of that. I think it goes without saying, right? We’ve lost track of that, so that’s the part that keeps bringing me back to Kinky Boots. I strapped on those heels because of that message of love. I tell people I’ve never felt more like a man than when I was dressed in those boots.

DP: Are there any other Broadway musicals you would love to be a part of someday?

WB: I don’t know. I’ve gotten a chance to do some of

the ones that I really love, but my dream is to originate a role. That’s something that I would love to do. I’ve gotten a chance to do Burr, which I argue is probably one of the best male roles in musical theater in terms of range and letting you do all these things, and I’m just waiting for that next role. I would love to work with Michael R. Jackson, who created A Strange Loop. So, that is my dream role. My dream role is a role I haven’t done yet.

DP: Your career began by appearing on Whose Line Is It

Anyway?, and you are still involved with the series to this day. What have you taken away from that experience? WB: If someone would have told me that I would have made a name and had a jumping off point from doing improv on TV, I wouldn’t have believed them. I was a fan of the original Whose Line? on British TV, but I didn’t think it could work over here, and I certainly never saw myself on it. I was just a fan. Like I said, I always thought that if I was going to make it, it would be by doing theater, and maybe by some chance I would then get a shot on a primetime drama. Comedy was never in my mind to do. It was just a tool that I use to keep my mind sharp. I think the thing I take away from Whose Line?, it’s the life lesson that I teach when I teach acting classes or improvisational classes, and to misquote James Brown, ‘If you stay ready, you ain’t got to get ready.’ Doing improvisation at night with my group out here in LA called the House Full of Honkeys for those five people in North Hollywood made me ready for Whose Line?. All my years of musical theater, all my years of dialect work, all my years of singing, that one second when someone said, ‘Hey, come audition for me,’ I was ready.

DP: Is there an episode of Whose Line? that is your absolute favorite?

WB: I don’t have a favorite, but I have those that live in my

heart and make me happy, and those are the ones where I got to appear with Robin Williams and Whoopi Goldberg. When I was a kid, those were two people that I looked at and went, wow. How do you do that? How do you act like that? How do you become someone else? How do you just talk and then you become this person, and then you go over here and do this? How do you do that? To be on a platform where I get to share the stage, and then have them go, ‘Wayne, I’m so happy to be sharing the stage with you!’ What? How is that possible? Still to this day, two of my fondest memories.

DP: We will get to see you show off your dramatic acting

chops in the upcoming Showtime series American Gigolo. Who do you play? WB: Yes! I don’t know when our season starts, but it’s going to be soon. I play a guy named Lorenzo, who like Julian, who is the titular American Gigolo and is played by Jon Bernthal, has been in prison. Julian gets out, and I am there waiting for him. You learn that I’m his best friend and we were brought together when we were teenagers. I’ve known him his whole life, and I try to help him through this section of his life, which I’m not going to give away, but I am there with him. Getting a chance to work side by side with Jon was a dream come true.

DP: On a personal level, you are a major ally for LGBTQ

people. What makes the queer community so special to you? WB: I’m going to say, and I want to choose my words carefully because I hope you understand where I’m coming from. It isn’t just that the queer community is special to me. It’s that I have people who are in the queer community that I cannot live without. I have had these people in my life since I was a teenager, and through my relationships with them, I then learned how to be a better person. Growing up in Orlando, Florida, I saw racism every day. Black ol’ me, I saw racism every day, but I was a nerd and totally unobservant to the way that someone would talk to someone they perceived as lesser than because they thought they were gay, lesbian, or trans. The things that they would say to these other kids while I was in high school that I did not pay attention to because I only thought about the crime of racism. It wasn’t until later that I began to assemble my tribe of people that I love. Oh, it just so happens that you’re gay, you’re a lesbian, and you’re trans. I went, wait a minute. I can’t let that happen. With me, I was just used to it and it’s a fight that I think every person of color goes through. I just wasn’t aware,

and even one of my dearest teachers, the woman that is responsible, Karen Ruggiero, I love you, she’s responsible for me being an actor and following my dreams. It wasn’t until later in our relationship did the anvil hit me on my head. So, that’s why the queer community is special to me. It’s not special because it’s a cause, it’s special because this is my family, and the queer community has given me love. They’ve given me people that I’ve gotten to make art with, and they’ve given me people that accept me, hands down. That’s why I will fight and use my voice.

DP: You are also a mental health advocate who has been

very open about your dealing with depression. What are you doing to help people become more open and comfortable with their mental health? WB: Since I am not a therapist, I think all I can do is just continue to be transparent, which was something I was so scared and nervous to do. At one point, I thought if I told people that I suffer from depression and have taken medication, they would perceive me as weak. I would lose my job, no one would want to hire me – that story that you tell yourself. Once I was able to stand up and get rid of that narrative, I was able to say, hey, I suffer from depression, I have bad days, I have those intrusive thoughts, these things go on with me. People who think Wayne doesn’t have any problems, he makes me laugh, they will realize that any person can feel that way. It’s okay for you to. It’s human, and the reason that I even came to that realization was because of Robin Williams. When Robin passed, that was all I needed. I went, okay, done. I’m going to get help, I’m going to talk, and I’m going to talk loudly. If you have an illness of any kind, you go to a doctor, right? Why wouldn’t you do that for your mind?

DP: What more do you hope to accomplish with your career and platform?

WB: All of it, but I think right now at this point in my life,

I’m going to alter the way, because words have power, I’m going to alter the way that I set myself up for failure. I think a lot of us do it, no matter your occupation. I’m going to take negative speech out of my language and stop the comparisons. Like, why am I not there when I see this guy doing a movie, blah, blah blah. But there’s somebody out there going, man, I wish I had what Wayne had. Then there’s somebody down the street looking at that dude going, I wish I had what that dude has. You don’t get anywhere with that, so I’m taking that out of my speech. All I want to do is create and make myself happy, and in the process of making myself happy, I want to make you and other people happy. If I’ve done that, then everything else will come.

How is the $50,000 Homestead Exemption Applied? The history of Homestead Exemption dates to 1934 when Florida voters approved a $5,000 exemption to help ease the burden of property taxes. This exemption amount was increased to $10,000 in the 1960’s by the Florida Legislature but was not yet incorporated into the Florida Constitution. A constitutional amendment adopted in 1980 increased the Homestead Exemption amount to $25,000. In 2008, Florida voters adopted a constitutional amendment increasing the Homestead Exemption amount to $50,000 based on the property’s assessed value. This amendment increasing the Homestead Exemption to $50,000 is a bit complicated for a few reasons: 1. The first $25,000 of the exemption is applied by all taxing authorities to the first $25,000 of your property’s assessed value. 2. The second $25,000 exemption is NOT applied to the school portion of your tax bill. The school board budget – at roughly 37% of the entire tax bill – makes up the single largest portion of your property tax bill. 3. The second $25,000 of the exemption is applied to the portion of assessed value between $50,000 - $75,000. This means you will not receive the full benefit of the second $25,000 if your property’s assessed value is less than $75,000. If your property’s assessed value is less than $50,000, you will not receive any additional savings from this second $25,000 exemption. T

he Imperial Sun Court of All Florida, often simply known as the Imperial Sun Court, is a nonprofit, public benefit corporation in the Sunshine State that hosts and participates in a variety of entertainment events and educational activities to raise money, which supports the causes of other diverse community-based charitable organizations that do not discriminate based upon race, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or ethnic background.

“The court is special to me in many ways,” she explains. “It allows me to bring out the drag side that I love, as well as my activist side. I am the first elected transgender empress. I got involved with the court because of the love I have for my community and the people that live in it. As LGBTQ people, we live all types of lives, and the organization brings us together as one.”

“The impact the Imperial Sun Court has made allows organizations to continue with the work they do in the LGBTQ community,” reigning Empress Jamie Lachoy says.

The Imperial Sun Court is ever-evolving, and its members will always remain as visible as possible. Not only to the LGBTQ community, but the South Florida community as a whole.

A new Emperor and Empress are elected yearly and are selected at Coronation, which is held in January of each year. As the Empress, Lachoy’s job is to organize and host events by raising money throughout the year.

There are several upcoming fundraisers and drag entertainment events, and Lachoy encourages anyone who is interested to stay up-to-date by following the Imperial Sun Court on Facebook and Instagram, or visit their official website, ImperialSunCourtFL.org.

“I am the face of the court for the community, and I hold a general membership meeting monthly,” she says. “I oversee communicating with the leaders of the charities we work with, as well as the venues. I also continue to raise awareness within and outside of our LGBTQ community.”

Their biggest event is the Coronation, where new monarchs are crowned and will serve the community for the next year.

Lachoy has been involved with the Imperial Sun Court since 2018. She began by assisting with community events.

“Everyone is also welcome to join us every second Thursday for our general board meeting and every second Saturday for our general membership meeting,” Lachoy says. “Please reach out to me if you have any specific questions I can answer!”

Talents More Than SKIN DEEP An Interview with Artist Kyle Vest By Elizabeth Dashiell

T

here are multi-talented artists, and then there is Kyle Vest. The Wilton Manors resident moved to South Florida last Halloween and has settled into the South Florida lifestyle the way he settled into the international art scene – with a whole lot of color, drama and (seeming) effortlessness. Residents and visitors might catch the celebrity artist touching up his new fluorescent murals for LIT Bar or doing the work that helped make him the go-to artist on a host of A-List celebrities’ speed-dials: Skin Art. Vest’s skill with bodies-as-a-canvas was enough to win him a coveted spot in the second season of the GSN breakout hit, Skin Wars. The reality game show pitted 12 body painters against each other in a series of themed challenges. Vest, the youngest competitor in the show, lasted through seven out of ten challenges, taking home a win in the “horror” challenge. Considering his alter-ego is called the “Prince of Fear,” taking that top prize was a natural for the creatively creepy scenic design master. “I designed my first haunted house scene at a local attraction when I was 8 years old,” says Vest. “That’s when my fascination with haunted artwork first started.” Growing up in the small town of Lebanon, Indiana, options for the budding artist were few but Vest didn’t let that deter him. When pushed by a middle school teacher to choose what he wanted to be, Vest said, “special effects artist,” and was promptly told that “was not a thing.” “I changed my answer to ‘special effects makeup artist,’ and started looking into that instead,” says Vest. His research led him to discovering Joe Blasco’s Makeup Artist Training Studio in Orlando. “It was a lot harder to get in than I thought. Joe basically pushed me to be a better high schooler.” The pushing paid off, and on graduation night he packed up and moved to Florida. The “Prince of Fear” might now be known for his skin art

and eerie mural work, but his list of accomplishments only starts there. Whether performing aerial ice skating, stilt-walking, sewing costumes for Justin Beiber’s music video – Vest throws himself into each creative challenge with single-minded purpose. That drive, however, was abruptly halted during the pandemic. Until it wasn’t. “Covid seemed like the worst thing in the world, like I had lost everything – and then I got the call from Tyler Perry’s studios. I ended up on set for an entire year. Because of COVID I wasn’t allowed to leave the bubble. I worked six days a week, 12-14 hours a day. I was the only on-set artist full time. I filmed two TV shows a day, and then cranked out two movies: Medea Homecoming and A Jazzman’s Blues. I have never worked harder in my life, but I accomplished in that year more than most accomplish in a lifetime.” He wrapped up another film with Screen Gems, ISS, where he was the textile artist, sewing the entire interior of the International Space Station set. “They had fired the other artists, because they couldn’t physically do the work,” explains Vest. Thanks to his years as an aerial ice skater, he had both the physical agility, and the sewing ability to sew in an inverted position for hours at a time. His frenetic schedule continued until the Tyler Perry studios went on break and Vest came down to Fort Lauderdale for a visit, and quickly fell in love with the area. “I did some installation pieces that sold really well and realized I could make more money doing my own art while still going to the beach, getting on a boat, enjoying the local scene, and basically having the Florida lifestyle.” The “quick visit” became a permanent stay as he focused on finding a work-life balance that fit his outsized passion for life. Vest hasn’t left the film industry behind entirely though, as he is currently awaiting word on a new series where he, and not his art, will be the focus. A fitting subject for the person whose awe-inspiring art is but a shadow of the life of the artist himself.

South Florida’s Jules Liesl Changes Her Image & Attitudes By John Hayden

F

or influencers, losing 50,000 Instagram followers is bad for business. But for Jules Liesl it was good for her soul. The South Florida native gained fame as a model for Maxim, a magazine many people look at for the pictures, not the articles. She then took it all down from her social media and started from scratch. Now, she’s a singer living in California and working to make it in the biz. She talked with OutClique about changing herself and changing perceptions. John Hayden: Just a few years ago you were cruising along with a solid modeling career boosted by lots of followers on social media. That’s a risky move. Jules Liesl: I was modeling for Maxim, not very positive. I started growing my page really fast in 2014. In 2018, I started to transition into a new Instagram, a new platform for myself, and a new identity. When I transitioned, I lost a ton of people on my Instagram. Literally, I lost 50,000 followers because I deleted everything to restart. Those were people who weren’t there for me. They were there for my body. I wasn’t discouraged. I was like, whatever. I’m on to better things now. Leveling up. It wasn’t an issue. I didn’t care.

JH: You lost a lot of people, but even more new fans found you and you’ve found a more satisfying life.

JL: Gaining followers that actually support what I’m doing

and not just following me because of my body, they’re good people who are interested in what I do for a career rather than looking at pictures of me half naked. Transitioning into new fans was interesting, but it definitely took a lot of time for new people to follow me. I got better fans who are involved and want to be a part of it, not just looking at my pictures.

JH: That has to have improved your self-image and overall state of mind.

JL: I’m happy right now. I wasn’t a year ago, or two or three years ago. Now I’m very happy and I feel like everything is looking up for me. When you’re doing really well, all this energy comes in and tries to bring you down. I’m trying to push against it.

JH: Now you’re a singer and songwriter. I just listened to “If I Were a Genie.” It’s playful, sexy, and fun.

JL: I like Middle Eastern men, they were my inspiration. I’m obsessed with Disney, so I wanted to do a take on the movie Aladdin.

JH: You have a condition where you ‘see’ colors around things, even ideas? JL: I have Synesthesia, which is a condition that causes a person to visualize colors, and this song is the color purple. So, I incorporate that in the sound. Some people might be able to hear or see it, which is cool.

JH: You talked about having better fans, and you seem

to make personal connections very easily. Why are they important to you, and why are you important to them? JL: My goal is to be relatable and accessible. I want to be a friend to people, not just someone they look up to. I want to be friends, go out to lunch, and be there for them. People online can feel lost, lonely, depressed, have anxiety, and feel like they don’t have anyone. People message me a lot that they don’t have anyone to talk to and I’m like ‘What’s up? Let’s get it together. I’m here for you!’ I also try to have a relationship with people who follow me and my career. They’re literally supporting me, they love me, and they’re giving me nothing but love, so why wouldn’t I want to have a relationship with them? When people meet me in person, I remember names and details about them.”

JH: You’re living in Hollywood, California, but South

Florida still claims you as one of its own. When you make it back, what are your favorite places? JL: I’m from Palm Beach Gardens, was born in Fort Lauderdale, and grew up in Boca. I used to go to The Gardens Mall. I love Juno Beach and the Jupiter Lighthouse.

JH: Any plans to tour around Florida? JL: I have a lot of friends there that are doing music too. I think it’d be really cool to go around Florida touring with them.

Pageant Opens Island City Stage’s Season By John Hayden

P

omp and pageantry is coming to Island City Stage this season!

The 11th season opens with Pageant, running October 20-November 20, 2022. The show has everything we love about pageants including swimsuit competitions, ball gowns, and drama, all with characters competing nightly for the grand title of “Miss Glamouresse.” And according to Island City’s Managing Director Marty Childers, there’s more to these ‘contestants’ than meets the eye. “In this pageant [the roles] are played by men,” he says. “They all have different backgrounds and carry different personalities for each of them.” While the roles are played by guys, this isn’t a show about drag queens. Each character is based on various pageant archetypes from the big personality of Miss Texas to a contestant with resting vacant face. “These are all professional actors,” Childers says. “They are trying to make themselves as beautiful as possible. We have a team of people who are dressing them, working with makeup.” Of course, you can’t have a pageant without a host. Larry Buzzeo is filling that role, and Childers says he’s perfect. “That smarmy, cheesy kind of ‘I’m host of the show’ [attitude] for whatever pageant it is.” They all combine to bring the best, and most hilarious parts of pageant vibes to life, including putting a crown on the winner. But who wins? Well, that’s up to you. The audience will choose the winner each night, which makes them a participant in the show with a stake in the performance. “It’s a genuine pageant,” Childers says. Connor Walton plays straight from the Bible Belt Miss Texas. He’s worked in other Island City productions,

and even though he didn’t know much about the show when he first heard about it, he called to see if there was something for him. Pageant may bring the classic Miss Congeniality to mind. I asked how his Miss Texas feels about world peace. “I think she’d be for it,” he said. The talent on stage extends beyond the talent competition. Actors are joined on stage by a live, four piece band providing the music for all the big production numbers you’d expect from a pageant. This is a bigger production than Island City usually does. In addition to the band, costuming, makeup, and hair are all high-end. This isn’t a ‘they’re-so-bad-they’re-good’ with old gowns and swimsuits. Everything is meant to look like the real deal, including the 36 wigs adorning contestants. Flock To Their Frocks The actors first got into their evening gowns, along with full makeup and hair, when they came to shoot promotional pictures. Childers says the night was amazing. “They were hysterical. They were so funny. If it’s any indication of how the show’s gonna go, it’s gonna be amazing.” Be warned, some of the characters may trigger memories from adolescence. “I kept saying ‘I knew that girl from high school,’” Childers laughs. Island City is known for producing high quality dramas, so some fans may be surprised to hear that the season opener is a musical comedy. But Childers says this is what we need right now. “It’s just a fun, over-the-top kind of show. Sometimes you need that. This show is kind of a break, it’s gonna be pure entertainment. It is a diverse cast and will represent a lot of different people, which is important for us.”

Miami International Piano Festival Announces Spectacular 25th Anniversary Season

atrons of Exceptional Artists, Inc. and its Miami International Piano Festival (MIPF) announce their 25th anniversary season, presenting an international showcase of accomplished veterans and emerging young pianists in 2022-2023. Inspired by the triumphant success of last season’s concerto opening, the first to feature the Miami International Piano Festival Orchestra, the most exciting season yet will launch with a celebration of three beloved piano concertos

The Broward Center season will also include more than ten sensory-inclusive performances, workshops, and classes for the neurodiverse community. At the performances, families will find a range of accommodations to create a welcoming experience. The live shows may be modified

to reduce loud noises or bright lights, and the theater lights in the audience chamber are kept up to a 30% level. All guests receive a social story and welcome video to introduce them to the theater before arrival and a character guide to introduce them to the cast and prepare them for the show. Broward Center has specially trained staff and volunteers who have learned specific skills needed to create a supportive environment and allow for a more relaxed theater experience.

Michael Carbonaro to Bring Brand-New Magic Tour to South Florida By Denny Patterson

I

llusionist and actor Michael Carbonaro, best known as the star and executive producer of truTV’s hit hiddencamera series The Carbonaro Effect, will be returning to South Florida with his brand-new tour, Carbonaro: Lies on Stage. Continuing to showcase his unmatched blend of humor and charisma along with never-before-seen tricks, there’s no telling what’s up Carbonaro’s sleeve. He will be performing for one-night only at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts on October 16, 2022. Discovering his love for magic at a young age, Carbonaro went on to study experimental theater with the aspirations of performing through a variety of theatrical mediums, including hidden-camera magic, which he later showcased frequently on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Carbonaro first crossed many LGBTQ folks’ radar in 2006 as Andy in Todd Stephens’ beloved comedy, Another Gay Movie, and he has now cemented himself as one of today’s most dynamic entertainers of his generation.

DP: This is your first tour post-pandemic? MC: Yes, and I kind of needed a break because The

Carbonaro Effect was beating me to pieces. I loved it and I’m so grateful, but man, we were just churning those episodes out. One after another after another. So, I had to release the pandemic amongst the world in order to take a vacation (laughs). Just kidding. I was like, good, I just want some downtime to chill. Then pretty much after a year into the pandemic, I was like, now I’m bored. I need to perform again. So, right from my little office, I did a show called Live from Space, where people tuned in on Zoom. About 500 people joined all eight nights, and it was awesome. I made a live chicken appear in my office and I flew out the window at the end, and it was wild because it was sort of like doing the TV show and a live show at the same time, but there’s nothing like being in front of a live audience.

Carbonaro took some time to answer some questions for OutClique.

DP: What do you always hope audiences take away from

Denny Patterson: We are so excited for you to be coming back to South Florida! What can we expect from Lies on Stage? Michael Carbonaro: A lot of lying, but the good lying. I think magicians are noble liars because we’re honest about lying. That’s the best way to do it. ‘Lies’ is a bad word these days, there’s way too many of them, but I get excited to lie to people who like to be lied to and know they’re being lied to. I’ve had a lot of colleges write and say, you’re teaching our students how to think critically because they watch the way you fool people and they’re like, wow, it’s really easy to be duped. So, there’s a good lesson there, but this is a really fun show. I draw a family audience, and I had all this pandemic time to work on brand-new tricks. I had that rainy day to hone all this new stuff that I wanted to play with, and the tour is in a great spot. I’ve done a bunch of dates, the jokes are solid, and

lot of excitement, and a lot of people bond over watching me. Whether it was my TV show or a live show, I love to see them all connect with each other. They’re all there for the same reason. Everybody has this really nice, joyful energy, and it’s very exciting to see that because as you know, we don’t always have that in the world.

DP: Is there a trick or illusion that is your absolute favorite to do?

MC: Right now, it’s the one when I bring two people up on

stage and make them disappear. It’s really cool because the whole audience gets involved, and after that, it’s like a roller coaster ride. I try my best not to blow my voice out every night because we’re all screaming with excitement during that whole segment, and it’s a bit of a long segment. I can’t help but get excited. So, that’s definitely the best one to perform now.

DP: Circling back to The Carbonaro Effect, the show has been on hiatus since the pandemic began. Any word on if it will continue? MC: Yeah, we never canceled or anything, and I was the one who wanted to stop. When we finished season five, the last episode, I turned into a 13-year-old kid and never turned back. The credits literally rolled while the kid was playing me. He had accidentally turned into me through some scientific device, and the person literally believed it. The kid then revealed what this was, saying, ‘Hi, I’m Michael Carbonaro, and you’re on my hidden camera TV show right now.’ The credits rolled, and I never came back out, which I thought was a really cool way to end it. We’ve talked about bringing it back, and in fact, I recently met with my co-producer for coffee. He was like, do you want to do something with it? He’s currently working on another TV project right now, which is in development. I love The Carbonaro Effect, and I definitely wanted to end it while on a high note. I think they would have kept it going until I died, but I’m interested in maybe doing something with it again. Never say never. We did five seasons, 120 episodes, but it could come back. DP: Weren’t you looking at turning it into a movie version? 152 | OutClique.com

MC: I did! We explored that a bunch, and it’s funny

because the people I talked to about this want to develop it more into another TV version. They’re going back to the series idea because the world has changed a lot with streaming and such. Also, there’ll be a little bit of pranking, but it’s sort of like making a hybrid of me getting to do live performing. I wanted to have that part of me into the next TV project. A lens to have a little bit of everything, so it’s kind of a magic variety show where I’m the Master of Ceremonies of the whole thing, and it goes into all these different worlds and channels. A lot of ways to divide it all up into one. We’re calling it “dream logic,” even though it’s live and has audience participation. Even though it’s not a narrative, it still has dream logic.

DP: I must ask about Another Gay Movie, which was my

first introduction to you. I saw that film when I was in high school and thought it was hilarious. Did you ever expect it to become such a cult classic? MC: No, I had no idea. It’s funny you say you watched it in high school, because when I made that movie, I got the joke and I was so excited about it, but I always imagined the crowd that I’d be playing for was sort of the people who were in the know. People who I would see at gay bars and the guys who really knew it was a spoof on a teen movie. It was about high school students, but I never really imagined actual high school students would watch it. This guy interviewed us for the 15-year anniversary of it, and he was talking about the same things. How he watched this movie in high school and it changed his life, and I couldn’t believe that. It’s been amazing to see the kind of impact it’s had on people, and that was something that came way later. Back then, it’s

kind of scary to imagine a high school student watching this (laughs). But it’s like, I knew me in high school, and if I saw a movie like this, I would have been excited too.

DP: For the 15-year anniversary, didn’t you, Jonah

Blechman, Mitch Morris, and Jonathan Chase reunite and watch the film? MC: Yes, we got to screen it in Austin, and that was the first time all four boys watched the movie together. Jonathan, who played Jarod, didn’t like the cut of it, so he never took the whole ride. He never came to any festivals or had fun with it. He had an amazing and emotional experience getting to embrace the movie, and for the four of us to sit and watch it together, it was definitely one of the highlights of my life.

DP: How come you didn’t return for the sequel? MC: I wanted to at first. We knew we weren’t going to get

Jonathan back for Jarod, so we talked about the three of us coming back, but everything started to fall apart. I felt like it wasn’t the right energy to pull off, so I didn’t do it.

DP: Would you like to return and do some more acting

projects? MC: Oh, for sure! I’m always fighting for that. I’ve auditioned and I did another guest star gig, but I’m still trying to nail that sitcom or movie project. I’m still hoping and dreaming and auditioning.

DP: What are some other future goals you hope to

accomplish with your career?

MC: I love live performing, so I never want to stop doing

that. I actually got to do a residency in Vegas this past summer at the Penn and Teller Theater. They took off to Australia and they had me fill in. I thought they were kidding when they called (laughs). They were like, you want to take over the theater? So, I got to do this little seven week run, and it was awesome! I’m like, I could see myself doing that. I love the idea of having a little Vegas residency. So, that will always be in mind, but I definitely want to still pursue that next great acting gig. I haven’t really rung that bell since Another Gay Movie. I would love to absorb a role and really take on a whole film or be a series regular on something. And with this new TV project, I’ve always been a fan of variety shows, which is sort of like a bad word in the industry because they hardly ever work, but I know there’s a way to remake the variety show in a way that would be really hip and awesome. That’s what I’m working on right now with this show, and I hope it happens. I hope we can pull it off.

DP: Before we wrap up, are there any other upcoming

projects or anything else you would like to mention or plug? MC: That’s pretty much it. New dates for this tour are being released, and I’m just excited to be coming back to Florida! We’re doing a whole run of four different places, and Florida has always been so generous and awesome. I love the audiences there. I can’t wait to come back!

Don’t Tell Varla Jean Merman To ‘Break A Leg’ By John Hayden

J

effery Roberson isn’t afraid to suffer for his art. That’s a good thing because he is really suffering these days. The man who created the outrageous and outrageously entertaining Varla Jean Merman spent the summer performing in Provincetown (P-Town). The job started well but ended on a roll, as in rolling in a wheelchair.

“Most of the summer was amazing,” he told OutClique. “My new show Varla Jean Merman’s Ready to Blow! was selling out. Unfortunately, on August 26, 2022, during my Anything Goes dance break, I had a bone break!” It didn’t take much to bring him down, just an errant prop.


“I slipped on a Tic-Tac,” he exclaims. “Yes, I slipped on a Tic-Tac! I used them in a pill bottle as fake pills and a few fell onto the stage causing me to fall directly on my left knee.” The nearest hospital was more than an hour away, and when he got there, the news wasn’t good. Roberson broke his kneecap and ruptured his quadricep tendon. “I took a week off to have surgery, but then I finished my last five shows in a wheelchair. The show must go on!” That came after another messy situation, but this one was out of his control. “The sewerage system in P-Town completely collapsed after a huge rain storm in August. No one could shower or bathe for two days. There were a lot more tops on those two days, let me tell you!” Restaurants had to close, and weren’t quite the same when they reopened. “We were allowed to do shows, but we couldn’t serve alcohol. I quickly learned my show is much funnier when you are loaded. Broken bones and sewer catastrophes! What a bummer summer!” Happy To Be Home Roberson calls South Florida home and is with friends while his knee and tendon heal. Living and working in two LGBTQIA+ meccas means he’s never really away from fans or friends. “There are so many people who I know in Fort Lauderdale who also come to Provincetown for the summer, and I think half the bears during Bear Week are from Wilton Manors,” Roberson said. “I have such great connections in Fort Lauderdale because me and my husband are there for nine months out of the year. It’s so wonderful to perform in vacation destinations because people are already so happy, and that means it’s easier to really get them going. What I’m trying to say is, I perform to drunk people a lot!”

For those who haven’t had the pleasure, Varla Jean’s lineage says she’s the child of Hollywood icons Ethel Merman and Ernest Borgnine. Her character’s been on stages ranging from Wilton Manors to P-Town to Carnegie Hall. She’s been on TV and in movies, including Ugly Betty and Girls Will Be Girls. Once he’s back on his feet, he’ll be doing his new show, Varla Jean Merman’s Ready to Blow!, which is based on another health catastrophe. “Believe it or not, Ready to Blow! is about post-COVID anxiety! Let the comedy begin?” With anxiety spreading and time on his hands, Roberson went to work and created a show everyone can relate to. “I realized that I wasn’t the only one having it, so I wrote an entire show about how to deal with anxiety. I promise it’s funny! It was a great way for me to deal with my own personal issues through humor. I have all new songs and videos, and even a cameo by my colleague Bianca Del Rio!” He’s set to bring a wheelchair-free performance of Ready to Blow! to Sunshine Cathedral on February 11, 2023, a venue he’s loved since moving here from New Orleans four years ago. He, along with his husband and Varla Jean, quickly settled in, and not just because of the party parallels. “Yes, it is a party city, but I am used to that, being from New Orleans. The people who live here are from all over the country and the world, and I have met some of the best friends of my life here. South Florida knows how to have a good time! And I love witnessing that at my own shows! After Roberson’s summer of trauma, it’s natural to worry about how Varla Jean is doing. He says she’s fine. “Varla is on a little hiatus living in a storage unit near Port Everglades for a while. Varla could use a little beauty sleep anyway.”

Ghost Light Society to Host 13th Annual Soirée in November, 2022

T

he Ghost Light Society once again shines a light on the award-winning arts-in-education programs at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts with its annual Ghost Light Society Soirée in November. This year’s galactic-themed event, “Soirée in Space” presented by UKG, is set for Saturday, November 5, 2022, from 7 to 11 p.m. at The Parker, 707 N.E. 8th Street in Fort Lauderdale. More than 250 guests will enjoy an out-of-this-world evening filled with dining, dancing, and musical entertainment in the unique setting of The Parker stage. Founded in 2009, the Ghost Light Society’s mission is to engage and inspire a new generation of patrons to take an active role in promoting, celebrating, and supporting the performing arts. To date, the group’s annual Soirée has raised more than $1.2 million to support the Broward Center’s arts-in-education programs for Broward County students. “As our largest and most anticipated event of the year, the

Soirée has a tremendous impact on our ability to help fund these important initiatives that enable more than 130,000 students annually to experience the educational power of the performing arts,” said Soirée Co-Chair Jason B. The Importance of Being Me Exhibit An LGBTQ+ Youth Performance, Art Exhibit & Reception By Nicole Stodard, Ph.D.

J

oin Thinking Cap Theatre at Mad Arts during LGBTQ History Month for “The Importance of Being Me”, an interdisciplinary youth art program inspired by Oscar Wilde (The Importance of Being Earnest), who was imprisoned in 1895 for “a love that dare not speak its name.” This event is the capstone of work created by 20 LGBTQ youth nationwide during the summer of 2022. The youth explored Wilde’s legacy of authentic self-expression and social critique through art as a launching pad to create self-affirming art of their own. The event lineup will include monologues, short plays, poetry, drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital art.

This program is made possible by Our Fund Foundation and MAD Arts, sponsored by The World Aids Museum, and in community partnership with TransInclusive Group, TransSocial INC, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County, and Thou Art Woman. Admission includes light hors d-oeuvres from 1:00-2:00pm on Sunday, October 23, 2022 and a dessert reception following the performance. The performance will begin at 2pm. Guests may peruse visual art exhibits prior to and after the performance.

The South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble Opens its 2022-23 Season with “Beyond Borders 2”

T

he South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble raises the curtain on its 2022-23 season with Beyond Borders 2 on Sunday, November 6, 2022 at 7 p.m. at the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. In a loving celebration of our planet, the multisensory experience will feature videos emphasizing the beauty and fragility of Mother Earth shown on multiple screens in harmonic accompaniment with the musicians. A highlight of the evening will be an original piece by Emmy® Award winning composer Julie Giroux. An accomplished orchestrator, composer, arranger,

clinician and guest conductor, Giroux’s recent symphonic masterpiece is the “Big Blue Marble.” She became the first female composer to have her work performed during a U.S. Presidential Inauguration ceremony when “Integrity March,” the first movement from Giroux’s Symphony No. 3 titled “No Finer Calling,” was played by the presidential band as Vice President Kamala D. Harris was introduced. In addition, the extraordinary performance will explore cultural music from around the world and feature several guest artists including performers from Modern Marimba and an Argentinian tango duo, performed by members of the renowned dance troupe, Dance South Florida.
