What Time is It?

Dear Readers,

As I write this letter, the large Google assistant display on my desks says only 8:00. I know it’s PM because, well, just because I know it’s night time.

But have you ever had a nap so strong, you wake up not knowing the time, the day, or sometimes even where you are? It’s a mixture of being totally refreshed and fear of “Where am I?” and “What am I late for?”

Does life ever feel like that? You know everything is fine. Nothing has changed about your credit, relationships, jobs, cars, or home. But we seem to live in a society where no one can relax. We’re constantly on our phones, social media, texting, or just “on the go.”

Recently I lost a good friend (and client of OutClique and cover story May 2022), Ken Keechl. I haven’t really accepted that I can’t walk over to his office and see his smiling face and get some encouragement and good advice.

There’s a lot (and I mean, a lot) of events, activities, shows, galas, and parties coming this year. Go to them and enjoy life. Go and enjoy the food, the culture, the diversity, the music, and importantly, the people. But be sure to take time for yourself to just sit in the quiet - and have peace.

Ken, may you be resting in His eternal peace.

May happiness be abounding.1

Attorney & Civil Rights Advocate

Ken Keechl Passes Away

South Florida’s LGBTQIA+ community has lost one of its most prominent defenders. Attorney, politician, and activist Ken Keechl has recently passed away. For more than thirty years he has stood up for LGBTQIA+ rights.

Keechl was at the forefront of family law long before marriage equality became a reality. He is responsible for case law on everything from property rights, adoption, estates and even “divorce equality.”

After graduating from Florida State University with a law degree in 1987, he delved into law and politics. Keechl was elected to the Broward County Commission in 2006 and served as county mayor from 2009-2010. Keechl lost a bid to return to the county commission in November, 2022.

In an interview with OutClique in March of last year, Keechl told me his political success was a little unexpected. “No one thought I had a chance of winning except my partner, Ted, and me. Surprising everyone, I won.”

It was his dedication to stopping the anti-LGBTQIA+ attacks in Tallahassee that motivated his comeback bid. “He loved people and the community and tried to do so much. I don’t believe the government ever came out of his blood,” his good friend, Rev. Joel Slotnick told OutClique

Keechl was also a mentor to today’s elected officials. They could call him up or stop by his office inside a small house in Wilton Manors and get advice. Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, who is the city’s first openly gay mayor, says he will be missed. “He stood as a mentor and role model for many who aspired to be members of a community that believes in self-sacrifice and honesty. There are large shoes to fill, and it’s a great loss for everybody.”

Wilton Manors Mayor Scott Newton echoed those thoughts. “Ken did a great job for the City of Wilton Manors Community and was an impressive Mayor of Broward County. He will be missed.”

Local activist Jake Valentine says his presence in Wilton Manors will be missed. “He was a good activist for Wilton Manors. He was a good, honest man who did his best for our city.”

Wilton city commissioner Chris Caputo had worked with Keechl on many projects involving the city, and told OutClique, “I am profoundly saddened by the loss of Ken Keechl. He was a remarkable human being, a public servant, and a friend to so many of us. Through his loss brings great sorrow, it’s comforting to know that is now in the company of his late husband, Ted.”

His influence was felt by the community beyond politics. SunServe CEO Tony Lima told OutClique, “We at SunServe are deeply saddened by the news of Ken Keechl's passing. Ken was not only an esteemed public servant and attorney but also a former board member of our organization. During his time with SunServe, he made significant contributions to our mission of serving marginalized communities. His impact on our organization, and the community at large, is immeasurable and will not be forgotten. I also had a personal connection to Ken and had the fortune of working with and learning from him in the political sphere for many years. He was a wonderful human being and a strong advocate for the LGBTQ community. He will be missed.”

Ken lost his husband, Ted, last December. While his cause of death hasn’t been officially announced, many friends said he was fighting a long-term illness, and had a procedure just days before passing. Ken Keechl was sixty years old.

A New Island House Video Clears The Air

Floridians are adept at dealing with hurricanes. They hunker down, weather the storm, and come back stronger. Much like a hurricane, our political climate over Florida has not been positive for the LGBTQA+ community and calls for stronger than usual tactics. Knowing that the perception of the storm’s power has an impact greater than its actual force, Island House Key West has taken the lead in knocking the wind out of this dangerous gust of fear by assembling a coalition of Key West voices. Their video provides a realistic, rational, and united response to Florida LGBTQA+ advocacy groups, and to countries including Canada, that are unfortunately warning visitors about the potential dangers that visitors to Florida might encounter; warnings that jeopardize the livelihoods of LGBTQA+ businesses and workers.

If you are familiar with the clever and entertaining videos (IslandHouseKeyWest.com/News-Videos) produced by Island House, you will recognize the difference in the one they have produced in reaction to self-defeating warnings about safe travel to Florida for LGBTQA+ tourists. Instead of tempting you with the alluring display of gay male eye candy that is part of the Island House

experience, and instead of highlighting their fabulous amenities, this video marks the first time that those who cater to the LGBTQA+ visitor to Key West have joined forces to deliver a potent message with one voice. Their message is that they are open for business and as gay as ever. They are the same resilient Key West they have always been – free-spirited, inclusive, welcoming, and fiercely gay.

Island House owner Bobi Lore says, “In Key West, with our community under attack, we are going to stand together as we always do. This video shows our solidarity. Sure, we are business leaders attracting the same clients, but more than that, we are a strong and united family. Island House stepped up to take a lead in our community by producing this video compilation of local voices showing the strength of the gay community that is ready to welcome you.”

Island House general managers Jeff Smead and husband James Braun are justifiably proud of their video and how it stands apart from the many other magical, romantic, sexy, and sentimental ones that enjoy a huge following

among those who love Island House. Smead says, “It took about four days to make the video. In typical Key West fashion, it was all unscripted and ad lib. The business owners who appear in the video were asked, ‘What would you say to those who say that Key West is unsafe?’ The venues represented are both gay and straight. Their message is, ‘The LGBTQ community has been through worse storms, like AIDS, COVID, Prop 8, and Stonewall. We say don’t listen to some bad actors who want you to boycott Florida which would really be an attack on businesses that have always welcomed you in historically gay resorts.’”

The message put out there by Island House’s Lore, Smead, and Braun seems to be working. Reservations at Island House are at an all-time high, proving that gay resorts are relevant and in demand.

Many familiar faces appear in the video, but particularly enjoyable is the delightful cameo by the stellar Mia Castillo whose finger wave will set you straight – and gay – about Key West.

Smead hopes this video will encourage those who are thinking about a trip to Key West. He says, “If you really want to help the LGBTQ community of Florida, don’t stay away. Come and support Key West. You will be glad you did.”

The Big Coconut Guesthouse

From the eastbound exit on I-95 all the way to the beach, Sunrise Boulevard bustles with restaurants, bars, entertainment, and more. But just steps away from the traffic and frenetic energy is a welcoming oasis of serenity.

The Big Coconut Guesthouse is tucked in 1021 NE 13th Ave., removed from the noise and activities of one of South Florida’s favorite destinations, but close enough to walk out the door and quickly be in the heart of the action. “That’s what I thought when I first saw it,” David Medici, Big Coconut’s owner, told OutClique. “We’re close to everything but we're still hidden away.”

The LGBTQIA+ guesthouse is celebrating its seventh anniversary this October, but Medici has been around South Florida’s guesthouse scene for decades. He used to own Coconut Cove Guesthouse, which at the time was the closest LGBTQIA+ guesthouse to the beach.

He sold that in 2014, and instantly regretted it. A couple of years later, he saw that the motel behind the Travel Lodge was on the market. “When I found this place, I thought I had a second chance.”

Guesthouses are no exception to the main rule of real estate: location, location, location. While Big Coconut isn’t right next to anything, it’s close to everything. Big Coconut is about a mile to the beach, a mile to Wilton Drive, and a mile to downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Medici says it’s perfect. “The location has something to do with it. We’re not on the beach, which is not a bad thing because it gets so congested. And we’re not in Wilton Manors, which is good too because I wanted a certain distance from the party crowd. I can’t have drunks climbing over my fence at night.”

Put It On Repeat

Finding the new location was only half the job. Keeping the rooms filled was another matter entirely. In the guesthouse space, loyalty is key. If guests have a great experience during their first stay, odds are they’ll keep coming back.

Medici used his mailing list from the first business to let regular guests know he was opening a new place. Rooms started booking. And kept booking. Big Coconut boasts

16 | OutClique.com

that 55% of their bookings are repeat customers. “A representative from our booking engine said he never saw a place with this much repeat business,” Medici said. “We work really hard at it.”

Property manager Tom Hazel has been with Medici since 2009 and was thrilled to join him in the new challenge. “We’ve been picking up a lot of reservations now because certain places on the beach have changed hands and they’re running them differently. Visitors aren’t happy with what’s going on down there.”

A stay at Big Coconut adds a social element to your South Florida visit. With 17 rooms, it’s big but not overwhelming. Many rooms connect, letting bigger parties book next to each other and interact. Lush landscaping and a privacy fence means guests can relax in comfort at the clothing optional pool deck.

“Everyone seems to gel,” Hazel said. “We have happy hour 5pm-6pm on Friday and Saturday. It helps everyone

get to know each other. A lot of our guys become friends.”

It’s a far cry from the place Medici and Hazel took over. “It was a motel,” Medici said. “It was drive up, go to your room. There was no privacy at all. People could walk right in and you could see the pool from the street.”

Big Coconut is now a piece of paradise in the middle of everything South Florida has to offer. Once guests get to know each other, they often figure out plans for dinner, share rides, and plan their next visits together.

Medici says a lot of regular guests come for a couple nights before a cruise and stay a couple more nights when they’re back in port, a sort of two-in-one vacation.

As for himself, Medici says he doesn’t need to travel the world, because the world comes to him at Big Coconut. “I travel the world without leaving. People from all over the world come down, I talk to them about where they’re from.”

Stoli Supports LGBTQIA+

Stoli Vodka has more flavors than a bag of Skittles and embraces the rainbow just as much. Now, the longtime LGBTQIA+ ally is getting a new look. From the logo to the branding to the bottle, the iconic beverage is celebrating a new chapter.

The Spirit of Change campaign reflects the company’s commitment to not only the LGBTQIA+ community but also their commitment to freedom in Ukraine and the downfall of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. Shortly after the invasion, the spirit shortened its name from Stolichnaya to Stoli. Besides acknowledging the fact we’ve already been calling it that for decades, it emphasizes their separation from Russia.

The company is not associated with the country in any way, and if you see old-school logos in other countries, they’re likely knockoffs.

“The response of the company is total, to the point that Stoli, forever and ever, has removed ‘ichnaya’ from its name,” Patrik Gallineaux, Stoli’s LGBTQ+/Multicultural Ambassador, told OutClique. “We don’t want to be confused with the fake Russian brand.”

Complete New Look

The variety remains bountiful and flavorful just like before. But like everything, a fresh look never hurts. “Besides only using Stoli, there’s a complete packaging rebrand, at

great expense. That means getting rid of all old products that say ‘ichnaya,’ and launching a new bottle design.”

Gallineaux unveiled the new look in September at NLGJA, a professional group for LGBTQIA+ journalists, at the Spirit of Change party in Philadelphia. Part of the company’s commitment is shunning all things Russian, from water to labels, to the metallic seal at the top of the bottle.

“The ‘neckers’ were out of stock for about two months because of the bombing. Everything is sourced from within the EU (European Union).” Between the war and cost of rebranding, Gallineaux says the company has gone through a rough patch but believes the company will come out all the better because of their commitment to diversity.

“We know it is a small price to pay for once and for all being able to champion that spirit.”

Despite the shift away from Russia, the company is recognizing its heritage in new ways. The old bottle featured a scene from Moscow. The new bottles go in a different direction. “The company is preserving some of the history of the brand. Stoli means ‘of the capital.’ Now the company is putting buildings from different world capitals, which is often where change happens.”

International Pride

Gallineaux spends a lot of time promoting Stoli at LGBTQIA+ events around the world. He had just returned from Copenhagen Pride when we talked. “I rode in a beautiful “Visibility and Acceptance” Stoli float in partnership with

the Harvey Milk Foundation and iconic gay bars Jailhouse and Masken. What I’m proud to tell people is that, despite all the obstacles we are facing around the world, I am very proud that my company stands, stronger than ever, side by side with our community and will not back down.”

His bubbly personality and genuine affection for Stoli comes through the moment you meet him. His pride will not be repressed. “It’s not enough to be tolerated. We must be celebrated. It’s about having safe spaces for all people.”

Despite his well-used passport, Gallineaux calls this area home, having moved here about two years ago from San Francisco. “The community of South Florida and Wilton Manors has been so welcoming, despite the occasional hurricane.”

When he is in town, he likes to hit up Wilton Drive. He shared his favorite spots to spend an evening or do a little day drinking. “During the day I always seem to stop into LIT. It’s fun with the garage area and the games. The Alibi patio is always fun and Hunters is a guilty pleasure.”

In the evenings, he hits up his neighborhood bar, LeBoy. “I’ll think of going to bed at 10 o’clock on a Wednesday and I’ll have a burst of energy and get on my scooter and head down the street. And Mona’s. They’re some of the friendliest bartenders I’ve ever met.”

Look for Gallineaux at LGBTQIA+ events throughout South Florida or just enjoying a drink on The Drive. If you buy him a drink, make sure it’s Stoli.

Does Eating Pink Pumpkins Cure Cancer?

While eating a pink pumpkin might not cure cancer, supporting the American Cancer Society through the Pink Pumpkin Pledge might make it possible. Pink Pumpkins was founded to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research, as well as to honor and remember Doreen Koenig. As a member of the Koenig family at CITY Furniture, Doreen Koenig supported the cause, and unfortunately was later diagnosed with breast cancer and lost her life fighting it. The name Pink Pumpkins comes from her idea to give out pink pumpkin baskets as a way to celebrate the spooky season of Halloween, as well as make people aware of the disease. Today, it is the name for CITY Furniture’s pledge to support finding a cure.

Before consumers give to any cause or charity, it is always wise to check out the charity to determine if the organization is worthy of your support. One website to use is www.Give.org. The BBB Wise Giving Alliance evaluates charities using 20 standards. Only charities operating in compliance with the standards may obtain use of the BBB Accredited Charity Seal. The American Cancer Society meets all 20 standards and their report is available at: www.give.org/charity-reviews/national/Health/AmericanCancer-Society-in-Kennesaw-ga-186

Another source consumers can use is Charity Navigator. Charity Navigator gives the American Cancer Society an 82% rating and states that if this organization aligns with

your passions and values, you can give with confidence.

BBB in our role to help bring together the community behind worthwhile initiatives is shining our torch on the various ways CITY Furniture brings together people to help create awareness and raise funds to support cancer research and resources. It is probably impossible to find someone whose life has not been affected by cancer.

CITY Furniture’s website makes it easy to find a way to join with our community to fight cancer. www.cityfurniture. com/company/city-cares/giving-pledge/breast-cancerawareness

You can donate directly on the website. Remember, only trust websites that use https and show a closed lock next to the URL. Many causes bring people together for walks or other events to raise funds. You can join with other people sharing your passion for a particular cause while also raising funds. You can join our community at the Broward Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Fort Lauderdale on October 22. The team CITY cares will be at the event along with other groups, businesses, and individuals. More information about the event and how to register is also available on the CITY Furniture website.

Even though pink is not one of BBB’s approved brand colors, we may have to break a rule or two to join this initiative. Together we can make a bigger impact.

Lift, Tighten, and Turn Back Time

In the ever-evolving world of aesthetic medicine, Ultherapy is changing the face of age defiance. Ultherapy is a non-invasive skin-tightening procedure that lifts the neck, chin, and brow and improves lines and wrinkles on the upper chest.

The treatment harnesses the power of ultrasound technology, diving deep beneath the skin’s surface and rejuvenating areas that most cosmetic enhancements barely graze. Ultherapy uses micro-focused ultrasound to generate a thermal effect under the skin. This effect essentially jump-starts your body’s natural process to create fresh, new collagen. It’s akin to pressing a subtle and graceful reset button for your face and upper chest.

While the technology behind Ultherapy is impressive, what truly matters is the hand that wields it. That’s where Genesis Health Institute’s Medical Director, Dr. Ferdinand Cabrera, shines. His artistry, combined with an in-depth understanding of the skin’s anatomy, ensures that he tailors each treatment to the individual. The outcome under his guidance results in a refreshed visage that speaks of elegance, authenticity, and a youthful vibrancy that feels just right.

You may be wondering about the advantages of choosing Ultherapy. First, the treatment is non-invasive, meaning no scalpel, stitches, and, importantly, no prolonged recovery time. Secondly, because it stimulates your own collagen, the results unfold naturally over time. There’s no sudden change, just a gradual return to a version of you that feels familiar yet enhanced. And lastly, with Dr. Cabrera’s precision, you can rest easy knowing you’re experiencing a treatment that maximizes effectiveness while ensuring comfort.

The march of time might be constant, but how we navigate its passage is evolving. With Ultherapy at Genesis Health Institute, the journey of facial aesthetics transforms into an artful evolution. Turn back the clock with a gentle, uplifting nudge. Start now by calling Dr. Cabrera at 954-561-3175 or scan the qr-code to book your appointment today.

Addressing Continued Access to Care

Many patients and community members have expressed concerns about the new Florida state laws or statutes, and how they may affect access to medical care for immigrants, transgender and gender-diverse adults and minors.

We have compiled a list of some of the most common concerns and questions regarding the new laws and their impact on services at Care Resource.

It is important to note that Care Resource continues to welcome all individuals in our community, which includes immigrants, LGBTQ+, and transgender and gender-diverse people.

This means we offer confidential, affordable, and accessible healthcare services to everyone, regardless of immigration status, sexual orientation, ethnicity, race, gender, religion, or ability to pay.

Protecting Your Privacy and Immigration Status: Florida’s new immigration law (SB 1718) requires reporting of services provided to undocumented people who receive medical care in state-funded hospitals and emergency rooms (ER). As such, Care Resource, a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), is not mandated to report, adopt new processes, or change our delivery of medical services under this law.

Can I become a patient of Care Resource regardless of my immigration status? Yes, immigration status does not prevent you from seeking primary medical care and other services from our health center. Only state-funded hospitals are affected.

Does Care Resource report immigration status to immigration authorities? No, our health center DOES NOT report client/patient identifying information or protected health information (PHI) such as name, address, health status, etc.

Will my immigration status affect my ability to receive emergency services at a local hospital? No, this new law DOES NOT allow hospitals to refuse care to anyone based on their immigration status.

If you have additional questions, please contact our Social

Continuing Gender-Affirming Care For Adults And Minors: Florida’s Senate Bill (SB 254) imposes new written consent procedures for gender-affirming care for adults and requires that all care be provided by an in-person physician. Additionally, the law prohibits gender-affirming care for anyone under the age of 18.

On June 6, 2023, a federal court issued a preliminary injunction halting enforcement of Florida’s ban on healthcare for transgender minors and saying the ban is unconstitutional. Because the court ruled that Florida’s ban on healthcare for transgender minors is unconstitutional, the State may not enforce either the law or the Board of Medicine rules to bar transgender youth from receiving medically needed transition-related health care.

This means that healthcare providers throughout Florida may provide medically needed care to transgender youth while the case proceeds. The answers to the following questions may change based on the outcome of the case.

Can my child be seen by a Care Resource provider to discuss gender-affirming care and will they be able to access such care? Yes.

Does Care Resource continue to provide genderaffirming care to transgender adults? Yes, Care Resource continues to provide gender-affirming care to transgender adults through our physicians, and those services have to be provided in person.

What if I can’t afford my medication or my insurance will not cover the medication prescribed by my physician? At Care Resource, our case management and pharmacy team work diligently to provide solutions for everyone, no matter their insurance coverage to find acceptable solutions to ensure all our patients receive the necessary medications they need for their treatment.

If you have additional questions about receiving genderaffirming services, please contact Care Resource’s Project sTrenGth program at 786-761-2756 or email projectstrength@careresource.org.

Lift, Tighten

And Turn Back Time

Ultherapy is changing the face of age defiance.

Ultherapy is a non-invasive skin-tightening procedure that lifts the neck, chin, and brow and improves lines and wrinkles on the upper chest.

• Harness the power of ultrasound technology.

• Dive deep beneath the skin’s surface and rejuvenate areas most cosmetic enhancements barely graze.

• Jump-start your body’s natural process to create fresh, new collagen.

Ultherapy uses micro-focused ultrasound to generate a thermal effect under the skin. My in-depth understanding of the skin’s anatomy ensures that you’ll achieve natural-looking results.

If you’re ready to turn back time, call me at 954-561-3175 or scan below to book your appointment today.

Important Updates from Mayor Dean Trantalis

Recently, the City Commission adopted its annual budget. I’m pleased to report that we have maintained our fiscally conservative approach to city finances while at the same time addressing critical priorities including public safety.

For the 17th year in a row, the commission has maintained the property tax rate. The millage rate stands at 4.1193.

This ensures the burden on our residents remains low compared to other cities even as we maintain stellar services. While our tax rate has not gone up, the average city millage rate in Broward County has increased more than 30 percent since 2007.

Our low tax rate has been part of a large financial strategy. Through better fiscal management, the city earned a coveted AAA rating from national credit rating agencies three years ago and has maintained it ever since. This means that we are paying lower interest rates on money borrowed for major projects from the new water treatment plant to upgrades to our flood control system. And lower interest rates keep the cost to the taxpayer lower than otherwise would be the case.

We recognize that public safety is a concern both locally and nationally. So, in the budget, the commission increased the size of the police force for the second year in a row. We have added a total of 35 officers — 14 officers in this new fiscal year and 21 last year.

At the same time, the budget includes several other important police measures.

We are expanding the coverage area of the innovative ShotSpotter Program that detects the location of gunfire and directs response by officers. We are building a full-service police substation in the YMCA on Sistrunk Boulevard. And, we are advancing our partnership with other law enforcement agencies to increase crime clearance rates by sharing violent crimes intelligence

information through the processing of bullet shell casings into a national database.

The commission is also stepping up its efforts to address homelessness.

The new budget increases the number of police officers assigned full time to homeless outreach so we can expand night and weekend coverage. We also increased money for our reunification program that reunites homeless individuals with family who can help them.

In another step to address homelessness, we doubled the money appropriated for our housing navigation program, a unique collaboration with the TaskForce for Ending Homelessness to reduce the number of displaced individuals locally.

Infrastructure is another priority.

We plan to issue another $210 million in bonds to expand our flood control and stormwater systems in eight highpriority neighborhoods that have experienced extreme flooding. Another $1.3 million is earmarked to repair or replace city seawalls.

We will also undertake a citywide assessment of the quality of our waterways to determine where to focus future cleanup efforts. And, we have allocated $45 million to install high-tech water meters that will ensure everyone’s water bill reflects actual use as accurately as possible.

We are determined to improve the quality of life in our city and ensure Fort Lauderdale continues to be one of the best places there is to live and work.

Yours,

A Magical Journey of Compassion and Impact

SunServe's Unwavering Support for South Florida's LGBTQ+ Community

In a world so desperately in need of compassion and change, working for an organization that is an agent of that transformation feels nothing short of magical. To say that I am proud to be part of SunServe is an understatement; it's a profound honor. We are not just an organization; we are a sanctuary, a fortress of kindness and advocacy, committed to empowering South Florida's LGBTQ+ community through a plethora of comprehensive support services.

Our work reaches into the heart of various challenges facing the LGBTQ+ community. It's not just the joy of accomplishing organizational goals that thrill us, but the sparkle in the eyes of the people we help that

propels us each day. Whether it's a teen coming out and seeking mental health support, an elder LGBTQ+ person in need of a community, or a transgender individual seeking specialized care, SunServe is their home, their shield, and their champion.

Healing and Empowerment

What sets SunServe apart is our holistic approach to the issues affecting our community. It's not just about offering one service, it's about creating an entire ecosystem of care that nourishes the mind, body, and soul.

Our Youth and Adult Mental Health Counseling

offers tailored and compassionate care to meet individual mental health needs. We don't just put a band-aid on a wound. We delve deep to foster emotional well-being through Support Circles —safe, welcoming groups where shared experiences are the cornerstone of communal healing.

Stable Homes, Thriving Lives

A home is not just four walls; it's your safe haven. Our Housing program offers comprehensive case management specifically designed to secure and stabilize housing for those who need it the most. We understand that a stable home environment is crucial to overall well-being, and we tirelessly work to ensure that.

Breaking Stigmas, Fostering Wellness

The stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS remains an issue, especially within the LGBTQ+ community. SunServe's affiliation with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) provides cutting-edge HIV/AIDS Care programs aimed at prevention, treatment, and, most importantly, stigma reduction. Together with AHF, we provide resources and education that save lives and challenge preconceived notions and prejudices.

Beyond the Binary

Our commitment to inclusivity shines brightest through our specialized Transgender Services . We provide a full spectrum of transgender-specific services, from

healthcare to social guidance. It's a statement, a loud one: You are seen, you are respected, and you are valued for who you are.

Nurturing Youth and Honoring Elders

SunServe's Youth & Family Program and our Senior Day Center and Senior Services aim to support well-being across the lifespan. Whether offering life coaching, therapy, and emergency shelter to LGBTQ+ youth or creating a robust range of programs for our senior community members, including a full-service daycare center for those needing extra help, we are here for the LGBTQ+ community at every stage of life.

Recovery as a Journey

Last but not least, our Substance Use Disorder Program offers a lifeline to those striving for recovery. Our comprehensive programs and sober living environments support not just sobriety but overall well-being.

In a landscape often marred by discrimination and a lack of comprehensive care, SunServe stands as a beacon of hope and compassion for the South Florida LGBTQ+ community. Each day, I witness this organization turn empathy into action, vulnerability into strength, and isolation into community. As I reflect on our collective efforts, it's evident that the magic doesn't just lie in the variety of services we offer but in the genuine transformation and empowerment we bring to people's lives.

John Hayden Talks about His Career, Community and His Recent Awards

You’ve read John Hayden’s colorful stories about local personalities and events, as well as his hard-hitting news coverage. What you may not know about Hayden is his exciting 25 year career as an entertainment and news reporter.

Recently, Hayden was recognized for outstanding journalism by the Society of Professional Journalists, winning two Sunshine State Awards. He took First Place in Obituary Reporting for his article about beloved spiritual leader, Rev. Patrick Rogers. Hayden took Second Place in the Hyperlocal Reporting category for his coverage of the bomb threat in Wilton Manors, and Pride Fort Lauderdale transparency.

“I’m incredibly honored and humbled to accept a pair of honors from the Society of Professional Journalists. I’ve worked with so many great journalists and had supportive parents. Thank you to everyone who has supported me through the years,“ Hayden posted on Facebook.

“Since I was a kid of about 10, I knew that I wanted to work in television. When I was in 5th grade my parents took me to Young Scholars Television Work Camp and I never let go,” says Hayden. He went on to earn his Bachelor's degree, in Mass Communication at Ball State. After graduation, he began a 12 year stint as a news producer in Knoxville, Indianapolis, and Grand Rapids.

When Hayden came to South Florida, to thaw out from cold winters up north, he fell in love with the area and decided to make it his “forever” home. In 2005 he landed a job with WSVN, the Fox affiliate and quickly became a producer for the pop culture, entertainment format show, Deco Drive. For more than 15 years, Hayden interviewed mega film, television and music stars. If they didn’t come to Miami, he traveled to LA, NY, and even London, where he attended (along with the Queen) the Royal Premiere of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the third film in the Chronicles of Narnia series.

When asked about his most memorable celebrity interviews, he immediately responded “Cher.” Hayden added, “She and Stanley Tucci were paired in interviews for the movie Burlesque. It was like old home week for Gays.

Every LGBTQ journalist was there.” The other memorable moment happened during the Toronto International Film Festival, when Jennifer Hudson and Queen Latifah were attending the premiere of The Secret Life of Bees, and Hudson sang Happy Birthday to him.

After leaving Deco Drive, in 2018 Hayden became a contributing writer for OutClique Magazine and writes for several other South Florida LGBTQ+ publications. He is also co-host, reporter, and commentator for Queer News Tonight and It's Happening Out on the Happening Out Television Network.

“Serving an area like Greater Wilton Manors is a privilege. Being able to promote community events and keep an eye on what’s going on out of public view is very important. South Florida’s LGBTQIA+ world is diverse and vibrant and deserves to have all the media coverage it gets, be it lifestyle, community growth, or government and corporate oversight."

Hayden truly loves the community, and the career he chose as a child and “never let go.”

Yes, of Course, God Loves You!

We had just finished marching in the Stonewall Pride Parade this past June for the first time as Christ Church United Methodist, when one of our members told me about a conversation she had had on the route.

Along the parade route someone had stopped her to ask if God loves them. Without missing a beat, she definitively said, “Yes, of course God loves you.”

She didn’t know who this person was. She didn’t know their experiences. She didn’t know who they had fallen in love with or if they’d ever been in love. She didn’t know how this person identified, in any capacity. And yet, she declared, “Yes, of course God loves you.”

It’s an answer that we believe fully at Christ Church United Methodist. We believe no matter who you are, God loves you just as you are.

This past summer, we intentionally spent more time together as a church and in our community to get to know one another and our community better. In addition to marching in Stonewall, we hosted a community meal for those experiencing homelessness in partnership with Taskforce Fore Ending Homelessness, spent Monday nights playing trivia at Funky Buddha Brewery, sang and laughed at weekly hymn sings, hosted a Juneteenth celebration, and even had an old school ice cream social.

All of these community building events were in addition to what we regularly get to do as a church. Namely, worshipping together regularly led by top notch musicians,

studying scripture and current events, hosting free weekly community meals, operating a food pantry, celebrating and remembering those that have passed away at memorial services, baptizing children, and of course celebrating our great students, families, and faculty at our own Christ Church School and at our partner school, Tedder Elementary.

On a recent trivia night at Funky Buddha, someone from another team asked our team who we were. I imagine that he had observed our intergenerational and diverse team laughing and carrying on and wanted to know what had brought this group of people together.

What brings us together for trivia and everything we do is a deep belief that God created and loves every single person and our commitment to live this out. We do so as a growing, diverse, and inclusive community where everyone belongs, including you!

We’d love to have you join us as our guest. Consider worshipping with us on a Sunday morning in Fort Lauderdale at 9:00 a.m. or 11:00 a.m., serving our larger community with us in our food pantry, laughing with us for a meal or drink at trivia, or enjoying beautiful music with us at our upcoming Concert Series this fall.

You can find out more information about all of these opportunities, our National Coming Out Day activities, and more by visiting our website at www.ChristChurchFL.org.

In the meantime, remember, “Yes, of course, God loves you!”

Brings the Camp, Laughs, Horror, and Gore

A full-length movie extravaganza featuring zombies, drag queens, and queer celebration - what more could we ask for?

Big Easy Queens, the new glam horror film written by Robert Leleux and directed by Erynn Dalton, officially made its world premiere in August at the ninth annual Popcorn Frights Film Festival. Starring two of South Florida’s biggest personalities, Jennifer McClain and Eric

Swanson, aka Miss Minnie

the duo play mortal enemies in a battle for territory.

In reality, Swanson and McClain are best friends and often perform together as the Boozy Belters.

“Because we are so well-known in South Florida, we wanted to give audiences something that they weren’t going to get for free every day on stage from us,” Swanson

Bouvèé,

says. “We didn’t want to portray the Boozy Belters on film. That was one of the goals Jen and I agreed on. Why not give them something different for their eyes?”

Set in the steamy, spooky underworld of New Orleans, Big Easy Queens follows Bouvèé, Mob Queen of the Quarter, who has the crew of her arch-nemesis, Poodles Makenzie, brutally slaughtered. She braces for the blowback, but what she doesn’t expect is to be stalked by a creepy masked figure who leaves behind bouquets of gardenias and terrifying notes. Is this Makenzie’s revenge, or the work of Bouvèé’s estranged sister who stole her man years ago and has suddenly reappeared in her life?

According to Swanson, he hopes Big Easy Queens will help elevate Miss Bouvèé to a national and global platform.

“I would love to show everything that’s in my wheelhouse,” he explains. Whether it’s comedy, drama, or music, I wanted to showcase the multiple facets of Miss Bouvèé, but I also wanted to just have fun and work with amazing people like Jen.”

McClain, who has been entertaining South Florida audiences for over 15 years, agreed to be involved with Big Easy Queens as long as she played a character that was the complete opposite of herself.

“When Eric asked if I wanted to do this film, I was interested, but I wanted no resemblance to Jennifer McClain whatsoever,” she says.

“I think we succeeded. Poodles is this caricature of a villain. I say it’s like Ursula meets Maleficent meets the Evil Queen. I wanted to be so far away from Jennifer McClain that I insisted on my own makeup artist, and I am hardly recognizable.”

In addition to Swanson and McClain, the other cast members of Big Easy Queens include drag icon Varla Jean Merman as herself, Jeffrey Roberson as Amos, Alexander Zenoz as Giuseppe, Matthew Jackson as Truve, Christopher Hamblin as Mittens Lafitte, and Benjamin Shaevitz as Mimi Bouvèé-Truve.

Shaevitz, who is known in the South Florida drag scene as Suzie Toot, jokingly calls his role a Lindsay Lohan character.

“Miss Bouvèé was originally supposed to play her twin sister as well,” he recalls. “They realized how much more work would be involved, and the character also sort of became its own thing. So, when they did a read through, Eric reached out and was like, hey, you’re a drag queen who acts. Come read for this role. And as I read it, I became obsessed with her. Mimi is like a Stepford wife. She’s dainty and super feminine, but she has an evil lurking beneath her that needs to come out. There was no guarantee that I would get the role, but it worked out, and I couldn’t be more grateful.”

As for how Dalton came aboard as the film’s director, she says she was introduced to Swanson and the project by happenstance.

“I have a theater in South Florida, and I rent it to Ronnie Larsen, who is a playwright and director here in town,” she states. “He was helping Eric produce a production, and I had a show happening at the same time in the same space. Ronnie told me, let’s get you two together to talk schedules! When

we met, there was an immediate connection. Eric is from Michigan, and I have a home in the same area in Michigan, and then movies were somehow brought up. I mentioned that I also direct movies, and Eric was like, really?! He mentioned Robert’s script, and I said if he needed help, advice, or whatever, just give me a call. The next day, Eric called and I immediately said, "Can I take you to dinner?” (Laughs).

“Before that meeting, Robert had an interview to write a movie for a television network, but he didn’t get it,” Swanson adds. “It was a Zoom interview, so when it was over, he sort of stomped out in a huff and poured himself a glass of wine. When I met Erynn the next day, I texted Robert being like, I just met with a film director. He responded - get her name and number! So, this movie is truly a byproduct of not getting another job. It's what motivated Robert to do it. He was passionate about having a voice and finding his voice as a screenplay writer. He's written many plays and articles, and he's a published memoirist, but he was ready to go somewhere else and take Bouvèé somewhere else.”

Dalton is best known for being a horror director and has

previously worked on projects such as The Gravedigger and American Cryptid.

“Horror is typically my wheelhouse,” she says. “When Eric and I met, the plot for Big Easy Queens was there, but the screenplay wasn't totally written yet. I would ask to add some campy horror and gore, but we were all committed to keeping it as mainstream as possible because based on the premise, we felt everything could have a mainstream appeal. Everyone was so great at listening to each other, and this was such a great team to work with. It’s always fun to collaborate with amazing artists.”

Despite being set in New Orleans, Big Easy Queens was entirely shot in Wilton Manors and Fort Lauderdale. Several local businesses helped create an authentic New Orleans vibe, and the film showcases a mesmerizing use of vibrant color in its cinematography.

“Wilton people will recognize some places, but it could be any bar anywhere,” Swanson says.

Ultimately, Swanson hopes audiences take away inspiration from Big Easy Queens and will take note that

it is simply a fun movie. It is not a queer film based on trauma or a coming out story.

McClain, Shaevitz, and Dalton agree.

“This movie is inherently queer, but it’s not in your face queer,” McClain says. “It’s got horror, comedy, and musical numbers, and I hope everyone loves it.”

“I am so delighted by this movie,” Shaevitz adds. “It's not a drag movie like To Wong Foo. We're all pretending and we're having a good time, and that's the queerest kind of movie. Not enough of that exists right now.”

“I just love how whimsy it is,” Dalton concludes. “I very much hope people walk away from it saying, you know, that was a film that had absolutely no agenda other than to make us laugh and have a great time. We live in a very politically charged time right now, where I’m sure some people in our country would look at this movie and have some not so nice things to say about it. I think if they watched it, they would have a good time. It's not

what they would say is an agenda film. It's just fun, like The Birdcage and Rocky Horror. We set out to make a fun movie, and it shouldn't matter what kind of costumes everybody wears.”

Swanson would also like to credit that Big Easy Queens was filmed during Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” era.

“The drag laws were coming into play,” he says. “They weren’t in effect yet, but ‘Don’t Say Gay’ was. There was actually a discussion about if Ben and I could do publicity in front of the theater in drag. We weren’t sure if that was allowed or not. Thankfully, it’s being overturned in court right now, but we don’t want to discredit that it was kind of scary to do this stuff, but we felt it was important. That’s why we expedited the process and we were committed to getting this edited and out because we felt like it was timely. We wanted to show amazing artistry that exists in the queer and drag world. These artists are living and breathing in South Florida, and they were oppressed. They were governed and restricted, and it was not an easy time to make a movie that was based in drag.”

Big Easy Queens is currently set to play at several upcoming film festivals, both nationally and internationally. For more information and to stay up-to-date, follow the film on Instagram @bigeasyqueens, or visit BigEasyQueens.com

"If You Could See Me Through My Eyes Exhibition"Ross Gallery

Curated by those featured in this exhibit. On view September 29, 2023 - December 1, 2023

Some of us wake up every morning in the hope of seeing “ourselves” in the mirror, that is, seeing ourselves as our internal camera sees us, not as we appear when we open our eyes. Imagine seeing your own reflection and being certain it is not really you. Then imagine being forced to wear clothes that make you more uncomfortable because they make you self-conscious as they misrepresent who you are to the world around you. All this muddling your brain before you are old enough to understand why.

This exhibition takes a look at how trans individuals are conditioned to feel bad, fearful, and abnormal. It is no surprise that trans children commit suicide at rates far above that of others. Legislation has targeted access to healthcare, our ability to tell our stories, and our responsibility to care for our youth. How do we save lives when ours feel so marginalized and threatened?

"Media Makes a Difference" - Hester Gallery

On view September 29, 2023 - December 1, 2023

A look at how LGBTQ+ media looks at our community and how mainstream media has seen us over the years. The

messages portrayed (and the media has changed over the years) are both impactful on how we are seen and understood, and a reflection on our greater acceptance by a majority of our fellow citizens.

There is still a lot of work to be done, but everyone who is part of the movement, everyone who is out, everyone who stands up, this exhibit is for you.

South Florida Drama Teacher wins Tony Award for Excellence in Education

As a high school theater teacher and director, Jason Zembuch-Young has spent years behind the scenes readying his students to take the stage. This year, however, Zembuch-Young found himself center stage at the 2023 Tony Awards as the recipient of the Excellence in Theatre Education Award sponsored by Carnegie Mellon University.

The award recognizes U.S. educators from kindergarten to 12th grade who have “demonstrated monumental impact on the lives of students and who embodies the highest standards of the profession.” A panel of judges from the American Theatre Wing, The Broadway League, Carnegie Mellon University, and other leaders in the theater industry selects the winner annually and presents it at the Tony Awards ceremony.

Zembuch-Young, whose Tony is nestled on a shelf at home next to his “Best Dad” trophy, worked at South Plantation High School for 19 years specializing in theater

for deaf and hard of hearing students. This school year, however, marked a new beginning for Zembuch-Young, as theatre director at Dr. Joaquin Garcia High School, the first new high school in Palm Beach County in 20 years. Young plans to get to know his new students and their families to see how best he can build an inclusive and diverse theater experience that reflects the specific needs of their community.

With a 2023 Tony award, a 2020 Barnes & Noble Teacher of the Year award, and an honorable mention award for the Tony’s 2019 Excellence in Education award, one might be surprised to know that Zembuch-Young did not set out to be a drama teacher.

Inspired by Robin William’s character, John Keating, in Dead Poet’s Society, Zembuch-Young started his career with a strong pull to be an English teacher, with visions of captivated students reciting “Oh captain, my captain” passionately in his English class.

“Here I am just giving it my all,” he said. “And, I’m being brilliant. I’m being amazing, man. And, I’m looking out at this sea of kids, and I’m getting drool and glossy-eyed children. I was miserable.”

But, he wasn’t miserable for long. Despite not having a background in theater, his early teaching jobs kept pushing him in that direction. Although students in his English class were less than enamored, students in his after school drama club were eager to work with him.

“This little group of kids came along. They just pounced on me,” he said. “They heard I was the new drama guy. They were so energetic so, of course, I was going to work with them. I wasn’t going to bail.”

Having only taken one theater history course and one acting class, Zembuch-Young didn’t know much about what he was expected to teach these students so he took himself to the library and checked out a book, How to Direct Your School Play . The learning curve was steep.

“People were using terms like flats and platforms and I’m like, okay, are we talking about shoes or what?” he said.

So, he checked out another book, Stock Scenery Construction. Although he describes himself as “bad, very very bad,” those first couple of years and his first productions at a middle school as “passable,” ZembuchYoung continued to learn and push both himself and his students.

“I dabbled around with it for a little bit and then the discovery that I made, which was really quite profound, was one of those things - call it God’s plan or kismet or

the universe, whatever you want to label it - but I was obviously meant to be doing this,” he said.

Zembuch-Young was struck by the power of theater to give students a sense of place, of community, and of accountability. The theater program kept kids in the public school system from slipping through the cracks.

“People always say ‘kids these days’. You know what, kids these days give me hope. They really do. It is so easy for us to see and focus on the negative. But, if you raise that bar high, I don't care where the kid comes from, they're going to reach for it. And, if you actually give them the steps they need in order to reach for it, then they can accomplish anything,” he said.

Zembuch-Young notes the power of theater education. He makes the comparison to a student who does not prepare for his math test, walks into class, and fails. The only person hurt is the student and, when he walks out the classroom, no one is the wiser that he’s not performing well. By contrast, in theater, whether a student is the lead of the show, an ensemble member, running crew backstage, light board operator or the person that builds the props, if a student does not perform, everybody is let down in a very tangible and authentic way.

“And, they are your friends, right? There is this family feel that is created by working so intimately with a group of people towards a common goal,” he said. “And that's what I absolutely love about theater, too. It doesn’t matter the walk of life from which you came. You can be gay, you can be straight, you can be rich, you can be poor, you can be Black, white, green, blue, you can have an exceptionality or not. Because at the end of the day, there is an opening night coming, and everybody works together for the common goal. And, it's really quite beautiful.”

Master Chorale of South Florida Announces 21st Season

The Master Chorale of South Florida is delighted to formally announce its 2023-2024 season, presenting an extraordinary lineup of choral performances. Under the artistic direction of Brett Karlin, the Master Chorale invites audiences to experience the power of music in conveying profound emotions and meaningful messages.

"I’m thrilled to present our upcoming 21st season, filled with an array of captivating choral performances that promise to inspire and uplift and embrace the richness of the human spirit,” shares Karlin.

Season Highlights:

Master Chorale of South Florida’s opening concert juxtaposes the timeless beauty of Fauré's Requiem with the poignant and powerful message of Joel Thompson's Seven Last Words of the Unarmed. This meaningful concert reflects themes of hope, compassion and the pursuit of justice, reminding us of the importance of empathy and unity in our world.

The December concert, “Comfort & Joy”, will delight with a blend of familiar and nostalgic carols and the world

premiere of a new composition for guitar and chorus by the exceptionally gifted Miami composer Alvaro Bermudez.

In January, Master Chorale of South Florida will join the New World Symphony in a single performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. This iconic masterpiece, with its triumphant "Ode to Joy," is a testament to the enduring legacy of Beethoven's genius.

April’s concert, Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor, is regarded as one of Mozart's most captivating choral works. Its combination of grandeur, emotional depth and fusion of classical and baroque styles with a touch of opera makes it an unforgettable work of epic proportions.

The season ends in June with Considering Matthew Shepard, a powerful, moving story of the young man whose tragic fate sparked a global conversation about hate, love and acceptance. As this season’s “Concert for a Cause,” a portion of proceeds from these concerts will be shared with SunServe, a local organization providing critical life assistance and mental health services to the most vulnerable members of South Florida’s LGBTQ+ community.

Annie Returns to The Broward Center

Holding onto hope when times are tough can take an awful lot of determination, and sometimes, an awful lot of determination comes in a surprisingly small package. Little Orphan Annie has reminded generations of theatergoers that sunshine is always right around the corner, and now the best-loved musical of all time is set to return in this new production – just as you remember it and just when we need it most. This celebration of family, optimism and the American spirit remains the ultimate cure for all the hard knocks life throws your way.

Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as, “one of the best family musicals ever penned!”, Annie features a book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse, and lyrics by Martin Charnin. All three authors received 1977 Tony Awards® for their work.

“This show, with its iconic title character, continues to delight generations of theatre-lovers old and new by joyfully singing directly into the face of great adversity with perseverance, guts and guile,” says director Jenn Thompson. “For decades, Annie has continued to shine brightly, not only as an appeal to our better angels, but also as an example of the thrill of hope, hard-won: promising a better ‘Tomorrow’ not only for Annie herself,

but for all who need her message now more than ever.”

Annie is directed by Jenn Thompson, who at the age of 10 stepped into the role of “Pepper” in the Original Broadway production, choreographed by Patricia Wilcox (Motown, A Night with Janis Joplin), with orchestrations by Dan DeLange. Talitha Fehr is the Music Coordinator and Elaine Davidson is the Music Director.

The lovable mutt “Sandy” is once again trained by Tony Award® Honoree William Berloni (Annie, A Christmas Story, Legally Blonde).

The original production of Annie had its world premiere on Aug 10, 1976 and it went on to win the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, seven Drama Desk Awards including Best Musical, the Grammy for Best Cast Show Album and seven Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book (Thomas Meehan) and Best Score (Charles Strouse, Martin Charnin). It closed on Broadway after playing 2,377 performances. Annie was revived on Broadway in 1997 and again in 2014. The show remains one of the biggest Broadway musical hits ever; it has been performed in 28 languages and has been running somewhere around the world for 45 years.

Island City Stage to Open 2023-2024 Season with Love! Valour! Compassion!

Stepping back into the spotlight for a 12th season, Island City Stage is committed to sharing stories of universal interest and engaging diverse audiences with entertaining, challenging, and inspiring productions, often exploring LGBTQ+ culture. The theater company’s 20232024 opener will be Terrence McNally's Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning play, Love! Valour! Compassion!

Playing October 12 - November 5, 2023, Love! Valour! Compassion! follows eight gay friends who spend the holidays over one summer at one's beautiful 100-yearold house in upstate New York. Michael Leeds, Island City Stage’s associate artistic director, will be directing this hilarious and touching dramedy full of love, laughs, and betrayal, and he took some time to talk more about it with OutClique.

Denny Patterson: Let me begin by asking, how excited are you for Love! Valour! Compassion! to be Island City Stage’s 2023-2024 opener?

Michael Leeds: I’m very, very excited! I saw Love! Valour! Compassion! back in 1995, the New York production, and it always stuck with me. I love Terrence McNally, he’s one of our jewels, and the production is terrific. I think especially for our audience, for those who remember it, they'll be eager to see it. Then for those who don’t, they’re in for a wonderful play. It’s funny, it’s sexy, and it’s touching. It’s about seven gay men, and there’s quite a bit of nudity, but nothing that’s not justified. McNally will have you laughing one minute, but he knows how to piece the heart in the next. I love that, and that kind of keeps the audience on their toes. They never know what’s coming next. So, I’m excited that Island City Stage chose to put on this production, but I’ll be honest with you. It’s incredibly challenging. I’ve directed a lot of musicals, and executing this is very complex.

Denny Patterson: As the show’s director, what is your vision for it?

Michael Leeds: I think I can best answer that by actually quoting McNally. He wanted to write about what it's like to be a gay man in 1995, and I will relay that today, but just for background, in 1995, there hadn’t yet been Will & Grace . There had been Boys in the Band, The Normal Heart , and Angels in America , but nothing like this, where he said, ‘I wanted to tell my friends how much they meant to me, and I wanted to tell everyone else who we are when they aren't around.’ I love that quote because for the gay population, our friends are our family, and this is what he shows on stage. I think it relates today, not only because there was the AIDS epidemic going around at that time, but there now seems to be an epidemic of singling out the LGBTQ+ community as being different. We're called groomers, and I think it's important that we show this normalcy, when we’re funny and sexy. There's this scene where two men have been together for 14 years, and they’re trimming each other's ears. I hope our audiences come and see this true experience of gay men simply living their lives.

Denny Patterson: What is the overall message you hope audiences take away from the show?

Michael Leeds: That we’re survivors. That’s what I ultimately see in this. We’re survivors, and we’re friends and family. That’s what I’ve experienced in my own life, so I think our audiences will truly relate to that as well.

Denny Patterson: Will you be involved with any other Island City Stage shows this upcoming season?

Michael Leeds: Yes, I’m directing the next show after this called Which Way to the Stage, which is a very funny piece. It’s about a gay man and woman who are both fans of Idina Menzel, and while they’re standing outside one of her Broadway shows, they meet a guy who they both fall for.

The 2023 National LGBTQ Task Force

50th Anniversary Gala

The National LGBTQ Task Force welcomes iconic drag performer and actor Latrice Royale and award-winning actor, singer, and filmmaker Dyllón Burnside as emcees of the 2023 National LGBTQ Task Force 50th anniversary fundraising Gala. The celebration takes place on Saturday, October 14, at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The Gala serves as the premier annual celebration of South Florida’s LGBTQ community and welcomes all community members and allies to join in the celebration.

Latrice Royale was named RuPaul’s Drag Race: Season 4 “Miss Congeniality” and is one of the most notable drag performers of our time. In addition to multiple guest appearances on RuPaul’s Drag Race, RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, and Celebrity Family Feud, Latrice has had two successful runs on London’s West End Stage in DeathDrop, a Las Vegas residency at the Flamingo Hotel, and a gueststarring role on Netflix’s AJ & the Queen. Most recently, her remarkable autobiographical one-queen-show, Here’s to Life, sold out in major cities worldwide.

Dyllón Burnside is best known for his role as Ricky in the FX series Pose, in which he co-starred with Dominique Jackson, recipient of the National LGBTQ Task Force’s 2023 National Leadership Award. Burnside first captivated audiences with his Broadway debut in 2014’s Holler if Ya Hear Me and subsequently appeared in Thoughts of a Colored Man, NBC’s Peter Pan Live!, and the HBO series High Maintenance and the Emmy-nominated Netflix series Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. His passion for equality and advocacy led him to host Prideland, a onehour documentary and a short-form digital series for PBS exploring the lives of LGBTQ+ people living in the southern region of the United States.

In this milestone 50th anniversary year, the Gala’s theme, “Forever Strong. Unapologetically Queer,” speaks to the organization’s determination in uplifting the LGBTQ community and creating spaces for queer people to be their full, authentic selves. For half a century, the Task Force has advocated for equality and change for the LGBTQ community with major initiatives in Florida, where the organization has a permanent office. Faced with an onslaught of anti-LGBTQ laws, the Task Force remains steadfast in its decision to remain in the state and to create a safer, more inclusive environment for Florida’s diverse queer community and work in collaboration with allied progressive organizations.

Gay Federal Agent Cory Allen Talks Debut Memoir ‘Breaking Free’

Cory Allen’s debut memoir, Breaking Free: A Saga of Self-Discovery by a Gay Secret Service Agent, is a deeply personal, candid, and vulnerable dive into the life of a gay man struggling with his own identity, marriage, discrimination, and balancing the demands that accompany being assigned to protect the most powerful people in the world.

Allen has served in law enforcement for many years, but eventually went federal after being hired by the United States Secret Service (USSS). Although he delivers an amusing view into his adventurous life of taking on highlevel protective tasks around the world and helping to protect President Barack Obama and his family, Allen also touches on what it was like working in such a hypermasculine field.

At the pinnacle of his career, Allen left the Secret Service to restart his life in California and begin the process of finally being his own person. Struggling to break free from societal norms, creating an identity apart from an all-

consuming profession, and learning to listen to intuition are at the heart of Breaking Free

Allen now works as a supervisory special agent in San Francisco, but he took some time to catch up with OutClique and talk more about the book, life with the Obamas, LGBTQ rights, and what’s next.

Denny Patterson: What initially inspired you to write the book?

Cory Allen: I had been on the go for 10-15 years and never allowed myself the chance to sit still. My work didn’t allow me to sit still, so I never had the chance to process a lot of things that had transpired in my life. I was traveling 60 percent of the time. So, when I left the Secret Service, all that came to an abrupt halt, and that's when I relocated to California and did a reboot.

I had just traveled the world, witnessed a lot of history, been through a divorce, moved across the country, and I needed a way to process and document all of it. Then I

started to realize that there was potentially other value in this. After seeing how Michelle Obama’s Becoming book tour affected so many people, I’d be remiss if I didn’t admit to being inspired by her.

Denny Patterson: Can you tell us how you began working with the Secret Service?

Cory Allen: Once I finished my bachelor’s degree, I knew I wanted to be a federal agent, so I could travel more and live in a supportive community. I was living outside Richmond, Virginia, working for a sheriff’s office that was deeply Republican. I applied to the FBI and USSS, and 18 months later, USSS offered me a position as a Special Agent.

Of the locations they offered, Miami made the most sense for my husband and I, both cost and location wise. It was a dream come true, and that allowed me to come out of my shell in my personal life.

Denny Patterson: What could have happened if the Secret Service found out you were gay after they hired you?

Cory Allen: For the first three and a half years, I probably would’ve been fired for an unjustified reason. I had a lesbian classmate who was fired, so I was very cautious to present the most masculine and straight version of myself, especially after I was blatantly discriminated against shortly after getting to Miami. I had to present two identities. One for work and one for home. This new job was our lifeline, so I had to keep my head down and work hard to stay off the radar.

Once SCOTUS overturned the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in 2013 and then the legalization of gay marriage in 2015, I felt more empowered to slowly begin to reveal more about my “hidden” home life. I happened to be the first gay USSS agent to demand federal benefits for my spouse and they literally didn’t have a policy for it yet. The same thing occurred when we relocated to Washington D.C., when I was again the first gay agent to demand relocation benefits for my husband.

Denny Patterson: What is one of your most memorable interactions with Barack and Michelle Obama?

Cory Allen: That’s tough, as they’re such genuine, kind, intelligent, and amazing human beings. They knew our names, their staff was amazing, and they radiated warmth. She still knew who I was six months after I left the agency when I saw them in San Francisco. President Obama had a great sense of humor.

From hanging out in the British Virgin Islands on Richard Branson’s islands to being in the presence of Bruce Springsteen or Tom Hanks making a joke at my expense, a lot of it was surreal. Beyonce and Jay-Z’s concert right after France won the World Cup in Paris was also epic and unforgettable.

Denny Patterson: Could you talk more about leaving the Secret Service to restart your life in California and begin the process of finally being your own person?

Cory Allen: Much like writing the book, it signaled things I needed to focus on as an individual and figure out who I was or who I wanted to be. I have always wanted to settle down, have a family, and be an amazing husband and father. I was in a new state by myself and didn’t know anybody, so it was a great opportunity to just be my true goofy, bubbly, and easy going self.

The six months I spent in San Francisco alone was a helpful time for me to readjust and start to figure out a path forward. It was two weeks after I moved there that I met my now fiancé on a gay cruise. The last place on earth I ever thought I’d find my favorite person (laughs).

Denny Patterson: Do you have any desire to write another book? Possibly one that will dive into fiction?

Cory Allen: I do! I plan to write a follow up to Breaking Free, which will pick up at the end of 2019 and forward. A lot has happened since then, especially with our surrogacy journey. There’s a lack of info out there, and I’d like to bring the same honesty to that story as I did with my current book. I’d also like to do a children’s book for our future kids, so they know how they came to be and see representation, as part of a biracial family. I’m open to fiction once I get the second book into editing. It could be fun!

The Genius of Gianni Versace Alive to Make South Florida Premiere at FLIFF

Gianni Versace may have been one of the world’s most prolific fashion designers, but how many people truly know his compelling story? Thanks to Salvatore “Vincent De Paul” Zannino’s new film, The Genius of Gianni Versace Alive, he is offering audiences a never-before-seen look into the icon’s extraordinary life and career.

Filmed at the Versace mansion in Miami, where every object is a separate work of art, this full-length documentary features archival material and the confessions of friends and former colleagues, celebrating a man who never stopped being inspired by his time to create a strictly personal universe of high aesthetics. As one of the first designers to link fashion to the music world and always treading the line between classic and modern, Versace redefined the way we perceive fashion and clothing.

De Paul is a two-time Emmy Award winning producer and actor, whose career spans three decades. The Genius of Gianni Versace Alive is his debut documentary feature as a director, and he took some time to talk more about the film, which will make its Florida debut at the 38th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF) on November 3, 2023, with OutClique. He also touches on what inspired him to create this project, how he initially met Versace, and more.

Denny Patterson: Vincent, thank you for taking some time to chat with us about your documentary, The Genius of Gianni Versace Alive. What inspired you to create it? Vincent De Paul: There are many reasons, but I just wanted his story to be told. A story that was authentic and accurate. I felt that he was such an inspiration to many, and he empowered so many musicians, models, actors, and performers. I wanted the world to know his journey, and The Genius of Gianni Versace Alive is really the celebration of an iconic Italian fashion designer, who empowered and embraced all he encountered. From Elton John to Bon Jovi, Tina Turner, and Madonna, he basically allowed them to express themselves, their artistry, and their personal style with his couture Milan designs. Everyone that wore his garments felt empowered, and this movie is truly an intimate story of a man who believed in personal expression. These interviews are more about the people that worked with him and knew him, as opposed to Ryan Murphy's dramatization of The Assasination of Gianni Versace, which was more about the murder and less about the man and creator. So, that's the difference between the two, and mine also takes on a different perspective. Mine focuses on the male perspective, with a lot of male models thanking him for what he did for them. A lot of movies don't really look at the male models. They look at the female models, but here, the male models get to really express what it was like to be a male model. And surprisingly, this is the one business where men are paid less disproportionately than their female counterparts. For example, Cindy Crawford gets paid one million for eight hours of work on a photoshoot, and her male counterpart is paid $10,000. That’s because women consume fashion more than men.

Denny Patterson: While doing my research, I read

that while working at Miami Beach Hospital, you were discovered and began doing fashion shows for Versace. Can you tell us how that all played out?

Vincent De Paul: Certainly. I graduated from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where I studied epidemiology, biomedical ethics, and biostatistics. So, while at Johns Hopkins, I flew to Miami to work at Mount Sinai. I would work from seven or eight in the morning until four in the evening, and then on the weekends, I would jog the beach. One day, I saw Gianni and Antonio D'Amico, his partner, lying on the beach with these beautiful, detailed towels. I was jogging past them and he said, “ciao,” and I said, “ciao, come sta,” and we started to talk. I told him I am at Mount Sinai working in epidemiologia, biomedica etica, and biostatistica, and he proceeded to correct my Italian (laughs). He was just so engaging and wonderful. Then after that, a modeling agency called and said they would like me to model for one of the shows at Bal Harbour Shops, and it was the Versace collection. So, it just happened, and it was so refreshing to do fashion shows and model. I also remember doing a regional show in Washington D.C., and it was just so special.

Denny Patterson: Having that personal connection with Gianni is another great aspect of this film. What do you ultimately hope audiences take away from it?

Vincent De Paul: First of all, I just want to thank the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF) for programming such an interesting and wide range of films for so many audiences, and hopefully, they will take away from this film an understanding of who Gianni was and how he did contribute to the life in South Florida by his beautiful home, Casa Casuarina, which he restored these dilapidated buildings in South Beach, and how he contributed to the world with his wonderful designs. He designed for La Scala Theater in Milan. He designed for so many, and hopefully, people will take away a better understanding of Versace and a better love of his work. That's really what it is, but I am so happy that the Florida audiences get to see a story that's homegrown.

Denny Patterson: What do you think Gianni would be doing today if he were still with us?

Vincent De Paul: One hundred percent, I think Gianni would still be designing. He loved that, of course, and I think he would be doing more in the film and TV world. He was always fascinated with film and TV. He loved Esther Williams and big Hollywood studio movies, so I think he would be a major player in design for feature films and episodics.

Support Your Local Queens on the Big Stage!

Beloved by millions, it seems nothing is more synonymous with Halloween these days than the 1993 Cult Classic film, Hocus Pocus. But how is this film still so popular after three decades? The best person to ask is South Florida’s own Drag Impresario, Nicole Halliwell.

For the last 11 years, Halliwell has built and perfected the original and longest running Hocus Pocus tribute show on the globe, gaining acknowledgement and accolades from the film’s stars, national publications like Rolling Stone Magazine, and significant mentions in the pages of the upcoming official Disney Book Hocus Pocus : An Oral History, which cites Drag Entertainers (and Halliwell’s show) as significant players in it’s monumental reemergence, including inspiring Mickey’s Orlando park to produce a live seasonal stage show of their own.

Last September, the Mouse even extended a paw to Nicole, who portrays Winifred, and her “sisters” (local performers Calypso Monroe, Nicky Monet) to appear alongside Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker on the red carpet in New York City for the premiere of Hocus Pocus 2, garnering national attention.

We sat down with Nicole to discuss her love for the film, and why 11 years later, her show “It’s Just A Bunch of Hocus Pocus, A Drag Tribute”, opening October 27th at The Center in Coral Springs, is as integral to Florida’s Halloween season as “Santa’s Enchanted Forest” is to Christmas.

OUTCLIQUE: It’s October! Are you ready?

NICOLE HALLIWELL: Honey, after this year, I feel like a paper straw in an ice coffee – but I’m ready! Flip the switch and open the curtains!

OCQ: What manifested the idea for a tribute show based on the film?

NICOLE HALLIWELL: I have a colossal love for Bette and her character, Winifred. She's delightfully unhinged - like me! When I began this project, Hocus Pocus was just “that movie” playing obscurely on TV during October in the 2010s. I had always dreamed of doing some type of tribute, so I built a small bar show with friends, ran an ad in the local gay mag, and 500 people showed up. We knew then and there, this was something people wanted! Now it's a yearly tradition!

OCQ: What makes this so different from the typical drag show?

NICOLE HALLIWELL: Detailed sets, replica costumes and props, uncanny lookalikes — it's a full theater experience! We truly bring the film to life.

OCQ: What can we expect to see?

NICOLE HALLIWELL: All of your favorite movie moments, unfolding before you on stage! Laugh, quote, and sing along with iconic scenes and characters! We add something new every year. PLUS - our delightfully evil pre-show ‘Wicked Villains’, starring Ursula, Cruella, Maleficent, and more! It’s a joyous departure from the usual, and the community is always impressed with what we can do beyond the bar stages!

OCQ: Where can our readers get tickets?

NICOLE HALLIWELL: Scan the QR code to the left, or visit www.hocuspocuslive.net to grab your seats. Readers can use the code BOOK to save $5 off each regular price ticket! Now more than ever – support your local queens! See you at the show!

Symphony of the Americas presents their first Symphony Classics program of this season, Symphonic Fireworks. Conducted by Artistic Director Pablo Mielgo, The Symphony will perform Jean Sibelius’ “Valse Triste” op. 44, N. 1, Franz Liszt’s “Preludes” S. 97, and the masterpiece of the classical era, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, a triumph of human spirit and resilience.

When Ludwig van Beethoven started his Fifth Symphony, he was aware that he was going deaf. Beethoven’s Fifth is raw emotion and sheer power, making it the world’s most recognizable symphonic work and one of the most frequently played symphonies.

Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor, and teacher of the Romantic period, Franz Liszt’s “Preludes” S. 97 is the third of Franz Liszt's thirteen symphonic poems.

Finnish Composer, Jean Sibelius’ “Valse Triste” op. 44, N. 1 was composed for his brother-in-law’s play Kuolema (Death), but became well known as a concert piece and remains one of Sibelius’ signature pieces.

Performances will be presented in The Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for Performing Arts, located at 201 SW 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312.

"GMCSF’s thirteenth season was a year of the ‘paradigm shift’ as the chorus grew exponentially, and as a result, so did our budget,” says Robert M. Beaulieu, Gala Chair. “The Chic & Unique Ball grew from realizing we needed to step up our fundraising efforts and create a unique event to draw returning and new guests into the GMCSF family."

MET inspired and classic Black-Tie is the fashion for the evening. As guests walk the red carpet they’ll feel like a celebrity as Paparazzi snap photos, and video cameras pull guests in for a brief interview.

The décor, sponsored by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, will be an elegant celebration of music, from custom guitar centerpieces that can be purchased, to tables themed to iconic music stars. Guests can

also bid on high-end packages, including a Hard Rock Experience, a Brand G Vacation (The Premier Operator of LGBT Cruises), and more.

Guests will enjoy cocktails at the open bars, which also feature Tito’s Handmade Vodka, and feast on delectable culinary creations by the celebrated Chefs at the Westin.

In Grammy-esque style, the GMCSF Awards Show will be projected on multimedia screens strategically placed in the ballroom. Three “Mission Moments'' video testimonials will open the ceremony. This year, two Al LaMorges Community Leadership awards will be presented; one to an individual and another to an organization or business that best embody the spirit of selfless service and support of GMCSF’s mission and LGBTQ+ Arts Organizations.

Then, dance the night away to the sounds of Vibe City, performing a selection of party music that will have everyone out of their seats and on the dance floor.

our values and mission are more relevant and vital now than ever. Funding from The Chic & Unique Ball will help support our regular shows throughout the year and outreach opportunities where we meet face-to-face with the community we serve but in a more intimate and personal setting," commented Beaulieu.

As of September 10, 2023, the chorus’ membership has grown to over 180 members and so has attendance, reaching more than 20,000 annually. GMCSF has become the most prominent LGBTQ+ chorus in the southeastern United States and one of the nation’s largest Top 10.

"I am excited to continue this journey, nurturing our artistic growth and sharing our voices to promote love, acceptance, and equality through music,” commented Gabe Salazar, artistic director. “I get to stand on the podium in front of nearly 200 singers. It’s the largest the group has ever been, and I am incredibly thankful and honored to be starting my 3rd season as the Artistic Director of the Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida."

“Men Who Dance” Breaking Boundaries and Redefining Masculinity

The largest all male dance festival in the United States, Men Who Dance, (MWD) returns to the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts for its triumphant fourth year with an ever-expanding lineup of dancers from around the globe.

“It’s an explosion of artistic expression celebrating, challenging, deconstructing, and re-defining preconceived notions about men who dance,” says Rafi MaldonadoLopez, founder of MWD and the Artistic and Executive Director for Sanctuary of the Arts and the InterAmerican Choreography Institute in Coral Gables. “The idea is to shut down tired stereotypes of masculinity.”

Since its inception, the festival has grown from 15 dancers representing 18 countries, to 41 international dancers representing 25 countries in 2022. “Last year,” Maldonado-Lopez proudly shares, “We had 11 world premieres that went into repertoire for different companies.” This year, Men Who Dance will host two performances on November 25, 2023 at 8PM and November 26, 2023 at 3PM

While fan favorites like the Tango-dancing twins will return, audiences should also expect “an emotional journey,” promises Maldonado-Lopez.

Guest artists from around the globe, join South Florida artists including dancers from Miami City Ballet, Dance NOW! Miami, Cuban Classical Ballet, Dimensions Dance Theatre of Miami, Tango Out, RTW DANCE, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida, Syncopate Collective, Florida Grand Opera, and New Canon Chamber Collective. World

renowned choreographer Pontus Lidberg will rejoin the cast this year, as well as Argenis Montalvo, principal dancer from Mexico’s National Company.

One of this year’s presenting artists, Randolph Ward, founder of RTW DANCE will perform A Vogue Extravaganza which he describes as “raw, untamed energy of the New York Ballroom, showcasing the power and vulnerability of male dancers.” For Ward, MWD “has really allowed me the power, privilege, and license to create work that encourages audience members to engage in respectful yet conscious conversation about humanity.”

For Ariel Rose, one of the founding choreographers of MWD and a soloist with Miami City Ballet who will also perform this November, his mission lies in the widespread education of men in ballet, saying “what I love the most about MWD is that the program dives into multiple facets of “being a man”, from strength, to power, to curiosity, to spirituality, to sentimentality, to poetic, to inspiredthe list goes on.” He then adds thoughtfully, “A list that can be expressed absent of words and instead through movement.”

This annual celebration of movement isn't limited to the present moment—it's a continuum of growth. From its inception in 2020 with 15 dancers to now featuring a staggering forty-plus dancers and even incorporating opera singers from Florida Grand Opera, Men Who Dance has evolved far beyond its initial scope. Its mission has expanded to encompass a broader spectrum of artistic exploration, reflecting the evolving landscape of masculinity.
