Lifting patients is the most dangerous task EMS providers will perform during a typical shift. In fact, 90% of sprains and strains are from patient lifts according to a recent study by NIOSH. This sobering statistic represents 89,100 EMS providers who visited an ED between 2010 and 2014. Because of the prevalence of powered stretchers that can self-load into an ambulance, the majority of these injuries happened when lifting the patient from the ground or transferring to a hospital bed.

Unfortunately, published studies provide statistics, but none provide answers to why the lifting related injury rate is so much higher in EMS than any other industry.

Knowing where most injuries are happening – lifting the patient from the ground – does little good if it isn’t clear why they are happening. The answer is simpler than one might think: handles.

The MEDIVIEW™ BEACON Prehospital Health Information Exchange. The newest addition to the MEDIVIEW™ prehospital charting platform connects hospitals, clinics, SNFs, dialysis centers, and other care facilities by offering real-time access to incoming patient data, in as little as 30 seconds after capture by field crews.

MEDIVIEW BEACON goes further than portals and interfaces from other ePCR firms by exporting data not just as a PDF, but also as a properly formatted CDA file that is consumable by most EHRs. With support from the California Health Care Foundation, Beyond Lucid Technologies was the first company in the EMS industry to export a CCD from NEMSIS v3 (first demonstrated in Alameda County, California, in November 2015). MEDIVIEW BEACON was designed to import, convert, and share compliant data from other ePCR systems.

MEDIVIEW ePCR subscribers can provide BEACON access to their affiliated hospitals at no extra cost.

Hospitals that wish to receive data from non-MEDIVIEW ePCRs via BEACON can do so for a nominal per-record fee, and can export data on-demand in standard formats that integrate with electronic health record systems.
