MEMBER COLLABORATION SUCCESS:

OIA’s Sustainability Working Group Drives Positive Change From issues of global trade and domestic production to corporate responsibility and supply chain management, outdoor companies face challenges from many directions. At Outdoor Industry Association (OIA), we partner with our members to help them recognize, anticipate and address key business challenges — through our work on a balanced trade agenda in Washington, D.C. and through the efforts of the Sustainability Working Group (OIA SWG). This new generation of business must encompass responsible sourcing, effective methods of traceability, innovative design, efficient operations and safe working environments. To this end, OIA’s Sustainability Working Group brings industry-leading companies together to develop handson tools that enable companies of all sizes to monitor and evaluate the way they do business and empower them to make positive changes.

GETTING STARTED WITH CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY Thursday, January 22 | 11 AM – 12 PM Salt Lake City Marriott Downtown at City Creek

This is not a new focus for our members. Nearly a decade ago, a core group of outdoor businesses came together to use the power of the industry as a whole to develop new and sustainable business practices that are good for business, people and the environment. The OIA SWG was born. Today, the OIA SWG is 250 member companies strong and recognizes that integrating environmental and social responsibility into every aspect of operations is not an add-on; it’s the foundation of smart business. It hinges on efficiency, quality, responsibility and a generation that expects more than just products. Established to tackle the challenges of reducing the

environmental and social impacts of our products, the OIA SWG has grown into unprecedented member-driven collaboration among outdoor brands, retailers, suppliers and other stakeholder organizations. This collaboration has resulted in the development of tools and guidance documents that are used far beyond our own supply chains, establishing the outdoor industry as a leader in responsible business. From the beginning, we recognized that two-thirds of our industry does business on a global scale, so it’s not enough to focus simply on recycling or employee transportation incentives. We’re targeting supply chain management, and reengineering it to reduce resource consumption, increase transparency and provide opportunities and incentives for companies to improve the way they operate. The future of the outdoor business environment is one that does and will demand supply chain innovation, risk management and the collaborative efforts of our industry to develop the technologies our customers will demand. The good news is, you don’t have to try to figure out the maze of compliance and sustainability best practices on your own.

Join OIA’s Sustainability Working Group! To get involved, contact us at sustainability@outdoorindustry.org.

FABRIC INNOVATIONS Outdoor Retailer Exhibitors Promise Exciting Displays of Innovative Products

by Kathlyn Swantko

Each January, all the major players in winter outdoor gear gather at Outdoor Retailer in Salt Lake City to present their latest developments for the season. OR Winter Market has become the platform for launching just about every groundbreaking textile innovation for winter apparel and gear that is coming to market. Today’s active outdoor industry supplier exhibitors will be presenting their newest technical materials to help make all apparel products look good and perform in extreme conditions. As manufacturers continually search for new fabric developments, product developers and designers will find a plethora of new laminates, lightweight fabrics, modified sustainable technologies, alternatives to traditional down, and functional finishes within this season’s suppliers’ offerings. Here is a preview of several innovative highlights that will be showcased at Winter Market.

Fibers / Yarns / Fabrics:

Celliant®, the patented technology that harnesses and recycles the body’s natural energy through a range of yarns and fabrics, announces new yarn technologies. Based in physics and biochemistry, Celliant’s four new proprietary blends include: Celliant Nylon, Celliant Dry Energy, Celliant Pima Cotton, and Celliant Merino. Celliant Nylon Yarns offer three versatile nylon yarns (70D DTY, 40D FDY, 162D ATY); Celliant Dry Energy Technology yarns are a blend of Celliant with the patented drirelease® technology to create a superior moisture management and performance system; Celliant Pima Cotton is a combination of Celliant and Pima Cotton, developed through the Cofaco Industries mill in Peru, that provides the comfort of a natural fiber with the health and performance benefits of Celliant. Celliant Merino offers Merino wool in an intimate yarn blend that will be available in the 1st quarter of 2015. The yarn will have all the proven attributes of Celliant combined with Merino wool’s softness next to the skin, breathability, anti-static property and odor resistance.

Concept III has teamed up with ABMT Australia in the development of a new collection of MerinoEdge blended circular knit fabrics. Depending on the blend, the fabrics have a variety of performance qualities, and are all easy care. A few of the Winter Market offerings include the MerinoEdge Elements and MerinoEdge Hybrid group. MerinoEdge Elements are for fleece and outerwear constructions, and blend merino with technical insulations for added warmth. The MerinoEdge Hybrid group consists of a technical bi-component knit structure, specially constructed to take advantage of the duel action wicking benefits of merino and microfiber polyester. CORDURA® Combat Wool™ collection offers wool comfort and the

durability of nylon. Constructed with Merino wool and nylon 6,6 fibers, the yarn is offered in a variety of styles from CORDURA’s host mills, including Chia Her with knits, baselayers, laminates and double weaves; Burlington

Two men’s pants, featuring woven CORDURA® Combat Wool™ fabric, also known as Merino FX by Burlington fabrics.

Industries with twill, canvas, ripstops, dobbies and stretch wovens; and Chang-Ho Fibre Corporation with midlayer knits.

Cordura® Lite Plus Fabrics is a fabric line, made using the highest

tenacity Type 749 yarns in various combinations ranging from 210-denier/68 filament to 525-denier/140 filament. The Cordura Lite Plus Fabrics have 12% higher tensile strength and contain two times more individual yarn filaments, compared to Cordura Lite fabric. The higher filament counts allow for increased natural fabric coverage in weaving, resulting in a smoother/ softer hand, along with improved water/air leakage and less coating required. Potential constructions include lightweight ripstops, dobbies, and plain weaves, targeted at end-use applications such as technical packs, daypacks and luggage.

FiberVisions, maker of CoolVisions® dyeable polypropylene, launches

three new fibers at this season’s show: WoolVisions™, which delivers yearround washable comfort; lightweight, superior moisture control and is quick drying. Continued on Page 64

FABRIC INNOVATIONS Continued From Page 15 Denim + CoolVisions®, which is durable, lightweight and fast drying. CoolVisions®Ultrafill, which is ultra-warm, ultra-light, ultra-dry. New CoolVisions® dyeable polypropylene FILAMENT is also under development and is available for a look-see. All-performance CoolVisions® is inherently cottony soft, lightweight and comfortable, wickable, durable, breathable, thermally insulating, stain resistant and environmentally friendly.

Insulations:

3M™ Thinsulate™ Featherless Insulation is breaking new ground in

fibers contained by two higher density layers. This allows reduced incidence of clumping/fiber migration issues and maintains very consistent thermal performance throughout the entire garment. Thermore also features its ultra-lightweight Aria, a synthetic alternative insulation to real down feathers that mimics the look of down when quilted with suitable fabrics. The insulation, which is 98% air by volume, weighing only 60 grams/meter. Thermore’s proprietary finishing process prevents migration and preserves the long-term appearance of the garment. In addition, Aria is a soft, efficient, high-loft insulator that is hypo-allergenic and is PFOS and PFOA free.

thermal insulation—warmth, without the downsides---600 fill power, with no feathers needed. 3M™ Thinsulate™ Featherless Insulation - 600 Fill Power is a revolutionary, loose fill down alternative that mimics or surpasses the performance of natural down in fill power, loft and performance when wet. Made of durable, lightweight polyester fibers, 3M™ Thinsulate™ Featherless Insulation provides warmth without a single feather. It is washable, squashable, ulta-puffed, beathable, and hypoallergenic with less migration than down.

Outlast Technologies, the leader in phase-change materials (PCMs), offers its new filling material, “Universe”. This PCM viscose fiber/down blend provides a natural solution for comfort---ideal for outerwear. In warm climates, the Outlast® fibers absorb excess body heat. As the climate cools, the fibers release the stored heat. Using this down/PCM viscose fiber blend can reduce finished-product costs compared to 100% down, while offering added value and performance. Outlast also introduces “Spherix”, an innovative PCM filling material for apparel – ideal for jackets. The new blend of PCM viscose fibers and polyester fiber-balls is soft and breathable while offering temperature regulation. When it gets too warm, the Outlast® fibers absorb excess body heat. When it begins to cool down, the performance fibers release the stored heat. The fiber-balls provide lightness and loft, while the Outlast® fibers manage temperature.

Thermore’s ultra-light Aria insulation, weighing only 60 grams/meter.

Leathers:

Pittard’s WR100 extreme is a high performance leather that goes a step beyond Pittards’ WR 100 in water resistant technology. The new leather variant (Mukluk), created initially for military use in arctic conditions, delivers footwear leather performance for the most demanding environments. WR 100 extreme takes leather performance into the outdoor market, by providing advanced outdoor protection and warmth in extreme cold and wet weather conditions. The leather qualities of WR 100 extreme include warmth retention, outstanding water resistance, fast drying, and breathability. The targeted end-use is footwear applications.

Outlast is also featuring Outlast® PCM fiberfill, the first PCM for bedding and sleeping bags, which provides an ideal comfort climate by balancing temperature and humidity levels during the night.

PrimaLoft, Inc., the world leader in providing comfort solutions with high-performance insulations and fabrics, continues its debut of proprietary technologies with the launch of PrimaLoft® Silver Insulation Active, an insulation solution offering breathability and unmatched warmth designed specifically for high-output adventures. A proprietary finish and manufacturing process locks tiny PrimaLoft® fibers in place, preventing them from migrating through fabrics thus allowing usage with more breathable, open weave materials. The construction of PrimaLoft® Silver Insulation Active enables excess heat and moisture to escape, keeping the user comfortable and dry, while providing product designers more variety to be paired with the wide range of shell and liner fabrics, including those with high breathability, resulting in more year-round choices for manufacturers and consumers. Thermore showcases its new EVOdown™ insulation, which they call the

“ultimate evolution in down alternatives”. Inspired by the soft hand and lofty nature of down feathers and blown fibers, EVOdown™ is Thermore’s latest innovation. EVOdown™ is a “rolled free-fiber composite” and consists of free

Technologies/Membranes & Laminates/Finishes:

Concept III and Dry-Tex announce a new generation of creative, lightweight, stretch laminates, targeted towards the outerwear and active technical performance markets. These developments use two and threelayer soft-shell fabrics that are made from stretch wovens and knits, created through Dry-Tex’s acquisition of the latest air jet looms, along with

FABRIC INNOVATIONS its sophisticated lamination machines. Since the new looms use less air, water, and energy, Dry-Tex can move from C8 DWR chemistry into 100% C6 for DWR, thus offering totally PFC-free DWRs. Dry-Tex is Oeko-Tex approved.

GORE-TEX® introduces a new GORE-TEX® with GORE® C-KNIT™

Dry-Tex Fleece Laminate

From Concept III and Dry-Tex, this stretch woven shell fabric is paired with a stretch laminate, and targeted towards outerwear and active performance markets.

Backer Technology. The new 3-layer fabrics is available in soft fabric textures, and addresses all hikers, trekkers, skiers and freeriders that demand outstanding comfort and ultimate wet weather protection. Thanks to the specifically engineered and patent pending laminate construction, C-KNIT™ Backer, the new products are lighter, softer, and even more breathable than comparable previous generation products without compromising on ruggedness. The new backer is made with extremely fine yarns on circular knitting machines, producing a fabric with a little bit of stretch. A special lamination procedure was developed specifically for this new fabric technology. The knit backing slides easily over other layers, further enhancing the wearer’s comfort. For the outer fabric, Gore uses soft, smooth textured nylon fabrics. Depending on the intended use, these can range from very thin, lightweight fabrics to heavier, more robust fabrics (i.e., for freeride pants). Positioned between the backer and the outer fabric, the reliable and proven bi-component GORE-TEX® membrane made of ePTFE fulfils its function. All of the available fabrics are recognized for their outstanding breathability.

Schoeller reinvents the classics by reinterpreting and refreshing prints

for specific end-use applications. One group, featuring schoeller®-WBformula is a laminate, in which a c_change™ climate membrane provides wind and weather protection on the reverse side. Another print fabric features the hard-wearing schoeller®-prestige fabric. The functional schoeller®-WBformula classic jeans fabric with c_change™ membrane is outstandingly well suited for trendy urban bikewear or winter sports.

Sympatex Technologies launches its new Phaseable® by

Sympatex Technologies product, which is a new 2.5-layer laminate and three-dimensional half-layer on the inside. Highlights include: smart

climate-control through dynamic heat insulation; durable as a 3-layer laminate; lightweight as a 2-layer laminate; high wearer comfort; 100% waterproof; optimal breathability; 100% windproof; 100% solvent free, ecological coating process; functionality with fashionable designs; and reduced carbon footprint through 100% EU production. Sympatex also features Moisture-tech® by Sympatex Technologies, which is a new waterproof shoe lining laminate that creates an excellent microclimate in the shoe. Moisture is wicked quickly from the foot through the inner-lining and into the hydrophilic intermediate layer. During strenuous physical activity the surplus moisture is buffered and cannot get back into the inner-lining due to the suction effect, which is directed towards the outside. The innovative Moisture-tech® laminate ensures faster wicking for perfect moisture management to keep your feet comfortable at all times. Schoeller Textil launches its CoolIt, BalanceIt, WarmIt fabrics at ORWM’15 that refine Phase-Change Material technology for today needs. By tweaking the amount of PCM capsules and temperature settings, Schoeller Textil perfected this technology for specific uses. BALANCEit balances the interior temperature for comfort; WARMit adds warmth; and COOLit provides some coolness. This new collection is available in combination with a variety of Schoeller textiles like elegant woolens or sporty soft-shells, and offers style and comfort in any situation. Sophisticated prints are the major theme for Schoeller’s collection of spacer fabrics. There are surprisingly different patterns on these threedimensional Schoeller Spacer Fabrics or schoeller®-WB-400 soft shell qualities, printed on the inner and outer sides to catch the eye and coordinate well with solid colors. On the print side, Schoeller features its denim prints. These exciting jean fabrics are printed on water repellent, bi-elastic schoeller®-naturetec cotton-polyamide. Also included are jacket qualities utilizing schoeller® c_change™ climate membrane, suited for the urban-active trend. Another recent development from Schoeller is schoeller®-GRIPit. This fabric provides a good gripping qualities. It helps to keep a rider in place in the saddle, or it lends an extra grippiness to gloves. The transparent schoeller®-GRIPit coating has a non-slip function. It’s a perfect addition to the new bi-elastic schoeller®-prestige or schoeller®-dynamic fabric. The unique function of schoeller®-GRIPit will not hinder the textile’s performance.
