Dear Friends, 2017 was a challenging year. In the wake of the presidential election, we worked hard to better understand the enormity of the very real threats facing our patients, our community, and our organization. And, as expected, over the past year the administration repeatedly challenged our rights and values. But it did not dampen our collective spirit. Because of the incredible efforts of the people in the Southern Finger Lakes region and across the country, we were able to defeat six votes in Congress to roll back the Affordable Care Act and “defund” Planned Parenthood on the national level. Despite the administration’s efforts to take away basic health insurance coverage and gut funding for essential health care services like those Planned Parenthood provides, we persevered — because of you. Over the past year, we remained steadfast in our mission to provide exceptional reproductive health care, honest sex education, and fearless advocacy. In fact, we increased our efforts to improve access to care by adding new services like PrEP, a medication to reduce the risk of HIV transmission for people at high risk of contracting the disease. We harnessed the power of youth voices to bring peer-led sex education into schools, as our Teen Council program expanded the reach of our sex education efforts. And, in resistance to the administration’s antireproductive health care campaign, hundreds of people across our region added their names to our activist list, growing our power and presence. Our patients, supporters, activists, and donors inspire us daily. You make our work possible. Thank you for standing with Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes. Sincerely, Alicia Kenaley President/CEO
Elizabeth Bixler Chair, Board of Directors
Patient Services Our skilled staff of medical associates, nurses, clinicians, data specialists, and administrative support team provides comprehensive, safe, and compassionate reproductive health care services to almost 10,000 patients each year. In 2017, our five health centers provided services in four counties, including birth control, pregnancy testing, emergency contraception, abortion, STD testing and treatment, HIV testing with same-day results, pap tests, breast checks, transgender hormone care, and more. As part of our commitment to making our services as accessible as possible, we offer most services on a sliding fee scale and continue to expand ways for our patients to make their appointments online anytime, anywhere through our online appointment system. A grant from the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute allowed us to introduce Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) services to our patients and hire a PrEP Services Coordinator. The number of patients who have been seen for PrEP services at our centers continues to grow, and we are proud to offer this critical service, helping reduce positive HIV diagnoses in New York. We continue to see growth in our transgender services, with over 300 patients in our hormone care program in 2017. This essential and life-affirming service has been a wonderful collaboration between Patient Services and Education. Our Transgender Patient Navigator helps hundreds of people arrange for care and educates area providers about respectful and affirming transgender care within our communities. We are proud to be partners in supporting the health of our communities and look forward to further expanding service offerings as we enter our 50th year.

We also spent time training Planned Parenthood Generation Action (PPGA) student organizations at Elmira College, Ithaca College, and Cornell University. PPGA at Ithaca College’s #Fight4BC secured a commitment from Ithaca College to continue providing birth control for students, no matter what. Other actions included: Legislative Kickoff. Volunteers in our health center waiting rooms collected 529 supporter cards and connected with four new patient advocates who became storytellers — sharing their story with legislators and at events. Opposed Defunding. Through rallies, protests, petition drops, and meetings with allies, we made sure elected officials know how unpopular taking away healthcare from millions of Americans is. We support Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes because we feel that our values and those shared with PPSFL are under attack by the current administration. PPSFL needs our community’s support, and we will do our small part to help through giving of our time, energy, and dollars. We believe in the amazing, selfless team at PPSFL who fight every day for the betterment of our neighbors in need of care. We believe in a woman’s right to choose. We believe in the mission and people behind Planned Parenthood and ask our friends and community to step up their support during this critical time.
The Abortion Access Fund of PPSFL benefits women in Tompkins, Chemung, Schuyler, and Steuben counties who have made the decision to have an abortion, but do not have the financial means to do so. The Maurer and Kelly Transgender Health Fund supports low-income individuals to offset the cost of transgender health services. This includes, but is not limited to, clinician visits and health services provided at PPSFL. Honorarium or Memorial gifts enable you to recognize loved ones with a gift that helps support our work.
