were still Pride flags flying everywhere and every 20 minutes or so, a small group attempted to resume the parade to no avail. The heavy police presence drove the revelers to different parts of the city. We stayed in Taksim until we were finally able to pass the police blockade. We had to wipe the Pride flags off our cheeks, but we finally made it through. The street was oddly silent. Most of the revelers looked confused, scared. Some looked defiant. The shop owners were standing at their doors, some to welcome us in to seek shelter from the gas, some to turn us away. We continued walking until we reached a TOMA dispersing a large crowd. We sought shelter on a side street and watched. “Don’t run,” my boyfriend told me. “They’ll chase you if you run.” I’d experienced this once before, though I’ve only been living in Istanbul for six months. On May Day, International Workers’ Day, the police invaded my quiet neighborhood in Osmanbey. Walking to my friend’s apartment for beers became a lot more complicated that day. We eventually found ourselves in Şişhane in the midst of a large street party. Finally. The cops had left. Pride could begin.

SHAME AT ISTANBUL PRIDE [John Doe is an old friend of ours and a gay American expat currently living and working in Istanbul, Turkey. The following article recounts his experience at Istanbul Pride 2015. He is using a pseudonym because he fears deportation by the ultra-conservative Erdoğan government, which outlaws critiques against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.]

ISTANBUL,

Turkey Taksim Square 28 June 2015 5:13 pm We stepped off the Metro and onto the platform like a catwalk. Decked out in our Pride finest with rainbows already sweat-smeared on our faces, we marched up the labyrinthian network of stairs and escalators to the sunlight above. But as we trodded up the final set of stairs, the sun disappeared. A tear gas canister was launched into the Metro station. Screaming. Running. It was at that moment that I channeled the Prophet Tupac. “I don’t give a f*ck,” I said. My Turkish boyfriend and our motley crew of Turkish and expat queers and allies and I ran up the stairs to the square. Thousands of people were just standing around waiting for the police to attack. There were TOMAs (water cannon 6

vehicles) everywhere. The entrance to Istiklal Caddesi, Istanbul’s busiest street in the heart of the busiest district, Taksim, was blocked by men in black with bulletproof vests, gas masks, AKs, and shields. Who the f*ck comes to a parade like that? And WE’RE the queers? We passed the central statue of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish republic who instituted the first purely secular state in the Muslim world. He looked like he was weeping at the sight of this state-sanctioned police violence and for his home which was falling slowly but surely under hyper-conservative Islamic rule, but he was probably just sprayed with a water cannon. As we proceeded to Istiklal, two plainclothes thugs ran toward me screaming and shoving me back forcefully. Trina, my other guardian angel, shoved Tupac off my shoulder and whispered in my ear, “Hit that b*tch with a bottle.” I got in their face, but my boyfriend yanked me back. We retreated to a line of dozens of buses used to transport the police to the square. We hid between them and watched the chaos. There

It felt real. Back home in the states, Pride is always a reason for celebration. But in Istanbul, it’s different. Whereas in America, I wouldn’t even hesitate to hold my boyfriend’s hand, in Istanbul, I’d seriously fear for our safety. Istanbul is the largest city in Europe and the fifth largest city in the world. The LGBT population is massive, but mostly invisible. These people, these queers, these Turks and Kurds and Syrians and Persians and Libyans and Algerians, finally felt free in Şişhane Meydani in one of the most progressive cities in the Muslim world. The pride was palpable. After my boyfriend and I left, the revelers were attacked with water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets. A young Turkish gay man lost his eye. The Governor of Istanbul canceled Pride hours before it was scheduled to begin, no doubt directed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, citing religious reasons. It coincided with the Muslim holy month of Ramazan. Except last year, Istanbul Pride’s 12th year, it also coincided with the holy month of Ramazan, and the police were there merely to protect and serve. This terrorism was politically motivated, revenge for Erdoğan having his ass handed to him in the recent elections by the HDP, a minority party supporting Kurdish and LGBT rights. The fight is not over. Western Europe and North America have made great strides in LGBT rights, but our brothers and sisters around the world need us. I have the luxury and privilege of being an American citizen. I can and will leave this country. But others are not so lucky. This is a call to action. In Istanbul, cops are shooting rubber bullets at us. But in Syria, ISIS is throwing us off buildings to our death. In Uganda, we are put to death with no remorse. Please do not let the fight end with marriage. Let it begin anew.

AS YOU WERE IN 1987, BRIANNA MATTHEWS JOINED the militar y.

Following her high school graduation, Matthews began her 10-year stint in the Air Force, where she controlled radio operations and information systems — but it wasn’t easy. Matthews is one of the estimated 134,000 transgender veterans in the United States. Ryan Howe

Matthews knew from a very young age that she struggled with gender identity. Throughout her time in middle and high school, she knew that she was different from the boys that surrounded her. Of course, this didn’t change once she joined the ranks of the enlisted. “Even as I served, I still didn’t know where I fit in,” Matthews said. “I didn’t know if I was just experimenting or what, but I knew the feelings weren’t going away. I was still hiding who I was, but I was becoming more liberal with the way I resented myself. Luckily, I was based in California where I could get away with it.” During her time, Matthews started shaving her legs and stashing female wardrobe in a triple-padlocked duffle bag. She was hiding which, until recently, was true for nearly every transgender service member in the US military. On July 13, Defense Secretary Ash Carter made the announcement that over the next six months, top military officials will hammer out the details of a new policy to allow active-duty troops to transition from one gender to another. This raised a whole slew of questions that remain unanswered. 8

AUGUST 05, 2015

“The Defense Department’s current regulations regarding transgender service members are outdated and are causing uncertainty that distracts commanders from our core missions,” Carter said in his statement. “Moreover, we have transgender soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines — real, patriotic Americans — who I know are being hurt by an outdated, confusing, inconsistent approach that’s contrary to our value of service and individual merit.” But what does this mean? On the social side, it comes with relief. No one will have to hide a part of their life in a duffle bag with three padlocks. But that is only one factor going into this six-month period where officials will have to make decisions on healthcare, combat jobs, and protection. For example, will a soldier who was born female but now lives as a man be permitted to hold one of more than 200,000 armor, infantry, artillery, and special operations positions that still prohibit women? What will the Military Health System accommodate for trans people? Will it cover

their hormones needed to transition, top and bottom surgery, or facial reconstructive surgery? Will there be protections put in place regarding harassment of these individuals? These questions aren’t only on the weight of the individuals who are rewriting the policy, but on the shoulders of current transgender troops and advocates. For Matthews, who credits her career success to her time in Air Force, it’s an issue that everyone needs to pay close attention to. “It’s going to be a very important six months, and even longer, for the military to really assess what needs to be done, and done right,” Matthews said. “It’s monumental, but if we are going to applaud them on the decision, we need to make sure they are heading in the right direction.”

marriages and that gay people are the only ones who participate in anal sex. One member of the group, a Texas conservative named Dr. Steven Hotze, even feels that kindergarten teachers will eventually start encouraging students to participate in anal sex.

LET NO GAY MARRIAGE PUT ASUNDER IT SHOULD COME AS ABSOLUTELY no surprise that there

would be a great gnashing of teeth and stomping of feet at the Supreme Cour t’s recent decision to legalize gay marriage in ever y state in the US, but the lengths some anti-gay marriage groups are willing to go to might drop more than a few jaws. REAL MARRIAGE: One Man/One Woman for Life is just one task force that’s committed to making sure gay marriage is the last step America takes in its death march toward “the new Sodom and Gomorrah.” O’Brian Gunn

THEY’VE GOT OUR RIGHTS IN THEIR SIGHTS

plans to march and protest, much like the LGBT community has done for decades.

Rather than going directly for the throat, Real Marriage is aiming at politicians and companies that support LGBT rights and the community’s right to marriage. Taking a look at the group’s website, it’s clear they uphold the same JudeoChristian beliefs and rhetoric as nearly every other anti-LGBT group out there. So what makes Real Marriage different? Mainly their

The group is also under the belief that the latest legal decision regarding the gay community will force “churches, schools, families, businesses, and individuals to accept, to affirm, and to even celebrate those who participate in anal sex, or anal sodomy.” This seems like a fair concern, considering the fact that LGBT people have always been forced to celebrate heterosexual

LOUIE

Meet Louie! Described by new pals here as a sweet boy who is a pleasure to walk on the leash, reports say he enjoys car rides, has liked cats in the past, and was around a 5-year-old and did well. Come meet this adorable little guy soon!

In addition to Dr. Hotze, other current speakers and members of Real Marriage include the president of the Coalition of African-American Pastors Rev. Bill Owens; reparative therapist Dr. Joe Nicolosi; therapist and “ex-homosexual” David H. Pickup; the founder of Conservapedia Andy Schlafly; and radio host Janet Porter. The six of them have banded together to show their message isn’t one of hate, but one that represents their conviction in “truth and rights.” Rev. Bill Owens has even gone so far as to compare the group’s mission with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s, quoting, “We will follow Dr. Martin Luther King’s example. We will not obey any unjust law. An unjust law is no law at all.” Seeing as the members also consider Real Marriage to be a philosophical movement, the group might soon compare itself with Mahatma Gandhi.

IT’S HUMAN NATURE Just like parents, the members of Real Marriage believe what they’re doing is best for the country and its future generations. And like parents, the organization may not realize the damage it could be causing — damage that might not become apparent until several years have passed. While the group’s effort to protect us from what they perceive as a threat is admirable, protecting us from something they clearly don’t understand isn’t. Expect to hear about mini-conferences, as well as a world conference from Real Marriage. The real question for Real Marriage is whether they’ll spread their message of reform from sea to shining sea until every country on the planet has turned away from its wicked ways. We’ve all schlepped our bags to the grocery store and felt the self-congratulatory, “Yay! I remembered! Did my part for the environment today!” We might’ve even given a buck to the person on the street and thought to ourselves, “Phew! I’m good for another month.” We have something to offer and, depending on where you are in your life journey, you can decide on what makes best sense for you. Years ago, I volunteered regularly at a soup kitchen. I was newly married and in a position to give. Now, as a single mom of three boys working two jobs, it’s not necessarily an option for me. However, my experiences there made an impression. It broadened my horizon. It filled my cup. I remember the smiles. The laughter. The joy. The simplicity. When you have so little as these folks do, it is the little things that bring joy — like an extra roll or dessert. (Not

to mention, I learned how to make the best dang gone potato salad ever from their cook.) When you’re in a fortunate position and have extra time or resources, you are poised for a season of giving. If you find yourself in this position, consider helping out one of our local food kitchens or pantries. Grant Avenue Soup Kitchen Grant Avenue Street Reach Kitchen does its part for our Denver community. Every Monday, they serve more than 1000 meals to those in need. Volunteers show up on Monday to help. If you’re looking for something that asks of a minimum time commitment, this may be a realistic option for you to give back. They work out of the St. Paul’s Church basement. Mondays only! For further information and how to volunteer, please contact them via their website. StreetReach.WordPress.com

FoodPantries.org Time is a challenge for most of us and may not be available for you to give. However, we all have extra food or clothing that we no longer need or find useful. A quick look in your pantry will reveal those ten boxes of crackers you thought was a great idea to buy after succumbing to the free samples at your big box retailer. Knowing that you’re never going to eat all of them before the expiration date, consider bagging them up and taking them to your nearest food pantry. FoodPantries.org is a great resource to find locations near you serving those in need in your community. Move For Hunger Moving? You may be thinking that out of all of the tasks at hand during a move, doing your part to help the hungry is no where near your radar screen. However, this fantastic non-profit saw a perfect opportunity to help the hungry and the movers. When we move, often times we have food we don’t want to take with us and, because of time constraints, it ends up in the trash. Move For Hunger partners with moving companies to take your unwanted, nonperishable food to local food pantries for you, thereby making it as convenient as possible to give back to your community during a move. When planning your next move, check out their website. MoveForHunger.org

Remember, it’s often the littlest of things that make the greatest impact.

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT We would like to extend our most sincere thanks to all who attended the Celebration of Life for Ellis McFadden. It was truly a beautiful and amazing tribute to a remarkable man. He would have loved to have seen how many friends turned out for this extraordinary event. Ellis will be missed on the campaign trail, as a volunteer for Project Angel Heart, by such a caring community, and his family. — The McFadden Family

LEGAL DIRECTORY

“NO LONGER MAY THIS LIBERTY BE DENIED” Sara M. Cates

June 26, 2015 was a day that marked the turn of a new era when the Supreme Court of the United States handed down the momentous decision granting marriage equality to all. Although Colorado granted such equality to couples eight months prior to this historic ruling, the effect of this ruling nonetheless raises questions as to how it will affect the rights already granted by Colorado. For example, now that marriage is legally recognized, does this also mean that common law marriage will be recognized? What about the availability of federal benefits to same-sex spouses, has that door been opened with this ruling? Will my marriage in Colorado be recognized in every state? The Supreme Court’s ruling recognizing same-sex marriage means that the same rights provided to one couple are the same rights provided to every couple, regardless of sexual orientation. Same-sex couples will now be able to file federal taxes jointly to receive the benefit of the marital deduction, which they were not able to do even after marriage

equality passed in Colorado. Same-sex marriages in Colorado will now be recognized in every state, just as Colorado will recognize marriages from all other states. In contrast however, although Colorado may now recognize common law marriage of same-sex couples, other states may not recognize such marriages, albeit not because of the couples’ sexual orientation, but rather because they simply do not recognize common-law marriage. Divorced spouses of a same-sex marriage may now share in the federal benefits that were just recently denied to them such as COBRA benefits, the ability to request Social Security benefits as a former spouse (so long as the other necessary factors are satisfied), and their former spouse’s federal retirement benefits. Obviously this remarkable ruling will create more questions as others are answered, such as whether long-term relationships will be given retroactive marriage recognition, but it is nonetheless amazing to be able to witness the evolution of our laws based on something so beautiful. Love.

TRUE ALIGNMENT WHAT YOUR NEW CAR CAN SAY ABOUT YOU AUTOMOBILES HAVE BEEN AN IMPORTANT par t of

American culture for decades. In fact, much of our relationship with the car was formed after World War II, when Americans gained a sense of freedom and independence that had been reined in during those war years. That fierce hold on owning, driving, and making a statement with our autos is still deeply ingrained in our culture. What we choose to drive can speak volumes about our personality. Let’s check out some of the following rides with an eye for the personalities they might por tray and my top likes and dislikes. Jonathan McGrew

2015 RAM 1500 ECODIESEL Personality: Butch. Tough. Capable. Environmentally conscious. Helpful. Likes: The RAM EcoDiesel is the only light-duty diesel engine available in the full-size truck market. It tows better than the gas-powered competition (max. 9800 lbs), has great fuel economy of up to 28 mpg on the highway, and a super-quiet operation not normally associated with diesel engines. Moreover, you can even get auto-start and an air suspension with accessible entry mode that makes running boards basically unnecessary. The key with the EcoDiesel is the fuel efficiency and impressive hauling capability. Dislikes: Like in the past, diesel engines have always commanded a price premium and the 14

AUGUST 05, 2015

RAM 1500 is no different. Expect to add several thousand for the diesel option, plus the need to upgrade to a higher model grade to get the look of the gas engine RAMs with the dual exhaust ... flashy wheels, etc.

2015 MINI COOPER S HARDTOP AND 4-DOOR Personality: Fun. Cute. Sporty. Trendsetter. Creative. Likes: The MINI Cooper S is in its element on the curvy mountain roads of Colorado or nipping into the city for some weekend shopping. These small cars are comfortable to drive while balancing the sporty feel with true functionality. The new 4-door option makes the backseat usable even to those over 6 feet tall. The folding back seat

will also let you stock up on those things you want and still get them home. Dislikes: In the 2-door, it’s hard to get into the backseat and in the 4-door version, the pillar between the front and rear doors makes it hard to get in and out of from the front seats. The suspension may seem harsh to those not versed in sports-car handling and it isn’t adjustable. Finally, you pay a premium for these cars when optioned up with our test vehicle tipping the scales at more than $34K.

2015 TOYOTA AVALON LIMITED HYBRID Personality: Reserved. Thoughtful. Environmentally Conscious. Analytical. Likes: The Avalon is the largest 4-door sedan you can get from Toyota and the most luxurious. It’s a vehicle that gives ample room for rear passengers while allowing for better-thanaverage fuel economy at 21/31 mpg city/hwy with the Hybrid. The Avalon does a good job of passenger comfort and gives you the luxury features you deserve in this class without shouting your success from the rooftops. The styling is also improved over past generations. Dislikes: The driving experience is less invigorating than Toyota would like you to believe. The front-wheel drive setup is noticeable with the weight of the Avalon giving the steering sensations a numb feeling. The interior styling, while improved over previous generations, still lacks that quality of finishes that make you feel like you’re in a luxury car — even if you’re paying luxury prices. And let’s face it, this just isn’t as radical a drive as their advertisements would suggest.

MATT BOMER

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYES

Magic Mike star on telling his kids he’s in a stripper movie, Channing’s flattery, and indecent gyrations Chris Azzopardi

18

AUGUST 05, 2015

Matt Bomer isn’t buying all

the buzz about Matt Bomer. Channeling his trademark charm, the actor calls it “sheer fallacy” that anyone — let alone heterosexual men — could possibly find his piercing babyblue eyes swoon-worthy. And then there’s his body. On display in all its near-nakedness in Magic Mike XXL, Bomer is modest about his sculpted physique. You expect it, of course. The 37-year-old dreamboat — just ask Channing Tatum — was born in Missouri and raised in Texas, and he hasn’t strayed from his humble Southern roots despite scorching screen after screen. Not just with a striptease, either. His Golden Globe-winning performance as Felix Turner in HBO’s powerful adaptation of Larry Kramer’s 1985 play The Normal Heart was a tear-jerking tour de force. And soon, Bomer will bring the spooks, starring alongside Lady Gaga during the upcoming American Horror Story: Hotel, another collaboration with Ryan Murphy (both worked together on Glee and The New Normal). We talked to Bomer about geeking out to Gaga, explaining Magic Mike to his sons, and how Channing Tatum made him blush. You and your Magic Mike co-star Channing Tatum made a surprise appearance at LA Pride. As a gay man yourself, what was it like having Channing show his support for the LGBT community? It’s one of the many things that makes him the magnanimous, amazing soul that he is. It was his idea, to be honest. And he didn’t have to do it. The reality of the situation is, it wasn’t some PR move on his part — he wanted to be inclusive, and that’s a big part of who he is. So, given the opportunity to work with him, and really everybody in this cast — they’re just a great example of what we all can be, people who are secure in themselves, and loving and accepting of people no matter who they are and where they come from. Channing was very complimentary toward you in his recent Reddit AMA interview. He said he “absof*ckinglutely” gets lost in your eyes, and that “I don’t know what they are made of outside of dreams and rainbows and amazingness.” How did you react when you learned of his enthusiasm for you? (laughs) I mean, obviously, I blushed. Knowing Channing, and what a kind soul he is, I guess when you’re the most handsome man on the planet — and probably the most desired man on the planet — you have the security to give those kinds of compliments. It made my day, of course! I and the rest of the world feel the same way about him. Your eyes get a lot of attention from a lot of people. Have they always stopped traffic? I don’t think they do! I think that’s sheer fallacy and kindness on the part of others. (laughs) No, I’m still just trying to wake up in the morning with the kids, so I don’t really have time to think about that. More like, “Do I look like I got five hours of sleep last night?!” So there’s a gay bar scene in Magic Mike XXL. How great is that, to have a gay bar scene with a full-on drag show and some of the best voguers in the world? I mean, it was like a little vogue ball going on.

Did you shoot at a real gay bar? They sure made the location feel like it! I didn’t ask; you roll up on set and that’s where you are that day. I wasn’t like, “Guys, is this a legit gay bar?!” The set-dec team on this movie is so gifted, so everywhere you go you just think, “Oh, this is what it is!” It’s good to see you have more lines in XXL. Well, that wouldn’t be hard. I would only have had to say, like, two or three words to have more lines than I had in the first one. (laughs) And the singing! You cover D’Angelo’s Untitled (How Does It Feel). Oh my god. I mean, that was the best white man’s attempt I could make at that song. I just tried to stay in the game, man. I mean, that vocal and that song — I couldn’t believe we were even trying to touch it. Were you intimidated? Of course! The whole thing was Channing’s idea. We did the first movie on a tiny budget, and we entertained the extras between takes. One time he just threw them right in front of my face and was like, “Do something entertaining.” That’s the creative, spontaneous soul that Channing is, and Joe [Manganiello] has known me since we were 18 and so [Joe] was like, “You should sing something!” And I was like, “What do I sing?” Channing was like, “I don’t know — sing some Jodeci.” And so I did! He remembered that for the second movie. He was like, “Why don’t you sing something? What song would you sing?” I was like, “Obviously the sexiest song of all time is How Does It Feel by D’Angelo, but I’m not gonna touch that song.” He was like, “Why don’t you give it a try?” So I basically recorded a vocal over a karaoke track, more or less — I ended up singing it live in the movie — but that recording is basically what we used to choreograph the piece and what we based the eventual performance on. What do you remember thinking the first time you saw D’Angelo bare almost all during the Untitled video? Honestly, I got Voodoo as soon as it came out (in 2000), and I remember hearing that song and playing it over and over again. And there’s an extended cut of that song that’s, like, seven minutes long! I was just so fascinated to hear a song that’s in six-eight time, and I know that’s musician lingo, but it was so inherently sexy in such an effortless way. Seeing the video was icing on the cake. I think I was like, “How do you get that jacked? How do you get in that kind of shape?” And then I was also like, “Was he really naked?!” And now you are that jacked in Magic Mike. Oh please! Not even. As they get older, how will you explain Magic Mike to your three sons? You know, I think the dialogue has already begun. I think it’s dangerous to just ignore something. way to their school, so when I’m driving them to school in the morning — the first couple of times I tried to duck my head — they realize it’s me. So, I told them when I was doing the movie, “This is a movie I’m doing where we play dancers and we have fun and we try to entertain these ladies.” I try to frame it in a context that they can understand so they’re not just operating in the dark and going, “Why is my dad naked on a billboard?” Because I’m trying to help them make sense of their world. In terms of a real conversation as to what that is, that probably won’t start until they’re teenagers. (laughs) And by the way, they keep me real grounded and real down to earth about it all. I remember I was actually taking my older son to see Jurassic World, and on the way there was the billboard and I was like, “Ah, crap.” And he brought it up. “Hey, that’s you on that billboard.” I was like, “Yeah.” And he goes, “But they’re not all you.” Like, you ain’t that cool. (laughs) The interesting thing about kids is, they don’t care what you do so much or what other people think about you; they’re more interested in what your relationship with them is like and how you prioritize them in your life. I try to make a strong effort to make them know they’re always number one for me. As an actor, what’s it like to go from a role in a movie that’s as intense as The Normal Heart to Magic Mike XXL? Is that balance critical for you as a person? I’ll be honest with you: It was for me, man. I went from Normal Heart into the last season of a show I’d done for six years [USA’s White Collar, 2009–2014], and then into a couple of more serious roles in other films, and this was the perfect break. The thing about being an actor is you approach your work the same regardless of what the role is or what the genre is or what the themes are — you try to put the same amount of work into it — but it was certainly nice and a breath of fresh air to get to chill out and have fun with these guys. You came out publicly in 2012 with so much grace and subtlety. These days, there’s a lot of pressure on Hollywood actors to take that step. Where do you stand on the role of public Hollywood figures in terms of advancing the gay movement? You know, it’s not my business to get up on a soapbox and tell people what they should and shouldn’t do. I think one thing people don’t always take into consideration is a holistic aspect of what may or may not be going on in that individual’s life ... what kind of relationship they have with their family, how the people around them feel about it. But for me, having kids and being married, it was important to maintain the integrity of those relationships and not teach my kids that this is a shameful secret and that my husband [Simon Halls] has to be waiting in the wings all the time. So that’s why it was important to me personally. By the same token, I don’t hold anyone else accountable. It’s their choice. 20

AUGUST 05, 2015

Now onto American Horror Story. According to a tweet from Ryan Murphy, Lady Gaga has to choose between you and actor Finn Wittrock during the upcoming season of American Horror Story: Hotel. First of all, have you even read the script yet? (laughs) That’s a great question. You’re the first person who’s started with that question, which I think is, ultimately, the most important question. I’ve read a couple of them. I wish I could tell you more. Honestly, I have no specifics of who’s playing which role and what Finn is playing, but I have a tremendous amount of respect for him as an actor and a person, and I’m incredibly excited to work with Stefani [Germanotta, aka Lady Gaga] as well and see what she brings to the table. And listen, Ryan is a creative genius. He really is. Nobody does a show quite like he does, so I’m really excited to get to play in that twisted and beautiful world they’ve created. Whatever they bring my way, I’m down. Which Lady Gaga song could you see yourself stripping to? Oh, you mean which one do I blast full volume in my car? I don’t know which one I’d strip to, to be honest with you, but I definitely get down to the Edge of Glory in my car and just geek out to it. If anyone saw me at a stop light, they would think I was crazy. I just let it fly in the car. I’ll do that. Do you ever watch that show Broad City? It’s everything. I’m so in love with these two girls who are the leads, and one of them at one point finally gets the apartment to herself and she blasts Edge of Glory and just does a full-on dance around her apartment. I will straight up do the same thing at my house when I get, you know, two free seconds. How have the moves you’ve learned from doing two Magic Mike movies been an asset to you in your own life? Um, they haven’t been. (laughs) First of all, after we finished the first film, my sister got married shortly thereafter, and I took some of my new gyrations to the dance floor at her wedding reception. I realized very quickly, after getting some scathing looks from my cousins, that some things are just best left in the club and not brought to your sister’s wedding reception party. Like, “Oh, I better check myself — I’m not in Magic Mike anymore!” (laughs) The nice thing about this movie, and what I personally love, is it’s about freedom, it’s about being comfortable with yourself — especially the second one. It’s about acceptance and a lack of judgment no matter who you are or where you come from. What I love about this world, this kind of odyssey that these guys all go on — yeah, they’re in a drag club, and then they’re at this party where people are doing drugs, but there’s no judgment about it. It’s these guys who are in this world trying to forget who they are but also accepting everything and everyone around them. That’s me and something I take with me in my life.

Tell me about your album, Pleasure. It’s kind of veering away from the traditional Drag Race Girls and their music. Trying to focus more on a career in music production. It’s more like a house album. Kinda well-rounded. It’s got different kinds of vibes. Was it inspired by any type of music? Most of my free nights out are spent on a dance floor with my friends. I’m from Chicago, and, you know, the whole house scene started there, and it’s really big there. It’s my favorite style of music.

And you’ve got a perfume coming out! Flazéda, right? Yeah, they just started sending out all the orders. How would you describe it? It smells so good, actually. The retail price is up there because it’s 100-percent pure perfume — there’s no water added. It retails for like $130 or something. It’s equivalent to a Chanel No. 9, and it’s got just as much sweet as it has musk. It’s really sexy, kind of nondescript. It’s like a sweet musk — it’s unisex, and you can wear it day or night. What made you decide to do a perfume? I didn’t decide; I was approached and offered, and I figured at this point in my career there’s no reason not to invest in all kinds of different things. You were top 3 in Drag Race this past season! What was the best part of your experience? The best part, I think, was just getting a reality check. I mean, I walked in there, and I thought I was the bomb, but I just never realized how much room for improvement there actually was. So, I got to grow, you know? I realized I’m not so perfect. At all. Did you have a turning point during the show? The turning point was the whole thing. I walked in not knowing what I was up against. I guess I just realized how unreal that show is. There’s so many elements. It’s not as simple as you might think. Was there anything unexpected you got from the show that you didn’t realize from just watching it in previous seasons? You just learn how reality television actually works. It’s not real … it’s just not real. Everything is kind of prewritten, almost. Things just sometimes happen to fall into place and work with the story, and sometimes they have to make it work. It’s not like The Real World, where we’re all just hanging out and shit happens. Things are kind of … I don’t know, predestined? Maybe I’m wrong. But that’s how I feel. That’s the vibe I got. What challenge did you feel you succeeded the most at? You walk in, and the first day you’re there is the tone you set for the rest of the season. You walk in and your character is written for you based on the way you act the first day, and it’s up to you to continue that. In my case, it wasn’t. I guess my biggest turning point was my stare down with RuPaul and turning it out, proving I’m not a no-personality type. How long have you been doing Pearl? It’ll be three years in October. Had you auditioned for Drag Race before, or was this the first time? No, this was my first time. I wanted to have a career being creative any way I possibly could.

I thought Drag Race would be a good platform for that and give me recognition, making things a bit easier. I think it has in a lot of ways, but there’s also a lot of hardships to go through. There’s a lot more pressure. There’s a lot to think about before you go on TV.

statement. I just do my thing, but there’s only so much one person can take. I didn’t know if it was going to help. I didn’t care. I just did it, and it was worth posting.

Have any queens from former seasons reached out to you or helped you along?

It makes absolutely no sense. It was pretty much the most ridiculous thing that’s ever happened to me. I can stand people having a negative opinion of me, but just straight-up blatant, ridiculous lies and misinformation is too much. He had his side of the story, and I just wanted my side to be out too, if people are really going to waste time talking about me.

There’s definitely been a handful of girls who reached out on social media and offered me sympathy or an ear to listen, guiding me if I needed any assistance. What’s next for Pearl? Are you working on anything? Right now I’m just so busy working. I took off two weeks, and it’s been a really nice little vacation. I’d like to produce more music, make more video art. I want to get back to my drawing and work with more celebrities. Daniel Franzese from Mean Girls offered me a part in a new movie he’s working on. That’s kind of exciting. Just a bunch of little projects for now. Right now I’m just trying to get to the beach. You recently had a little rant on Facebook. Looks like you got a lot off your chest. What set that off? Nothing really set it off. The last 4–5 months has been so wild, and I’ve been so busy. I neglected social media because there’s a lot of negativity on there. It’s like, no matter how hard you work or what you do or what you invest into your craft or how much you sacrifice to entertain people, there’s always criticism and negativity. It’s something I didn’t expect, but it’s nothing I can’t handle. I had Raja blasting me on social media for absolutely ludicrous reasons, and I chose to ignore that. And then all of a sudden I had nudes leak. I guess that was what set it off. I don’t know. For a sec, I had a moment, and I couldn’t believe I was being so mistreated on social media. So I had to have a moment, make my one public statement, and then I don’t have to worry about it for a while. I just decided to touch on all things that had been bothering me for the last few months. I’m really not the type to make any kind of public

What happened with Raja? You stepped into one of her gigs?

Do you feel like you skyrocketed pretty quickly from being lesser known to having everyone talking about you? I don’t really know if everyone is talking about me, or what’s going on. I avoid social media. I don’t really read my comments. It’s just not worth it to me. You can read 200 nice things, but then one negative thing and it’s all you see. For me, it’s just easier to avoid it and post my content. I guess I would be less surprised if I was really active on social media and involved, but I’m not. I’m just a person who’s making art and putting it out in the world. So yeah, I guess it’s surprising that I’m doing my thing and then people are talking about me. I’m unconcerned about what anyone else is doing. So your nudes that leaked. Was that weird for you? How did that come about? I mean, I don’t care. I’m not ashamed of my body, obviously. I wouldn’t have shared them if I were ashamed in the first place. I just think it’s weird that someone would post it. It’s like an invasion of privacy and really uncool and pathetic, and they should get a life. That’s all I have to say about it. Can Denver expect to see you sometime? I think I’ll be in Denver in September … at Tracks.

Close! Pearl’s slated to be here August 28, according to his website, PearlLiaison.com.

You just learn how reality television actually works. It’s not real … it’s just not real.

H EI N ZES I G H T

REFLECTIONS ON 100 HEINZESIGHT COLUMNS IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT this is the 100th HeinzeSight column! I’m in a ver y ref lective place where emotions of pride, excitement, disbelief , and humility bubble inside me. Late in 2010, I was contacted by Matt Kailey at Out Front about using my counseling experience paired with my love of leather and unique sense of humor to create a relationship column that focused on addressing questions and issues that affect the gay male community. This request freaked me out. I consider myself a solid speaker, but had never written professionally or taken my mental pile of random thoughts and impressions, organized them, and presented them in a meaningful way. They usually just spew from my mouth, sometimes making friends and people around me laugh or raise a brow. I endeavored to create something that would amuse, empower, provoke, challenge, and provide opportunities for individuals to laugh and ponder future possibilities. These columns were intended to make people think, realize they’re not alone in their struggles, and enable them to take better control of their emotions, choices, and happiness. Simply put, I wanted to help give others the kick in the butt to create a fantastic life. I just want people to take moments to stop and think about their lives. So many times, we just run from one situation to the next, trying to get through each day with little thought into how to make deeper, long-lasting improvements in our lives. We tackle challenges only to get through them and move on to the next one. We run toward a future that is unclear and undefined because we haven’t taken the time to figure out what really makes us feel excited to wake up each day ready to attack the world or identify those barriers that are keeping us from finding fulfillment. This process has been quite a wild ride that has impacted me in ways I could have never foreseen. There’s a fair amount of notoriety that makes the ego-driven part of my personality jump up and down with excitement, but there’s a more philanthropic benefit. I want to help create opportunities for people to make life changes. These improvements can motivate us to be happier in our own lives and be a positive force for other people. When enough cheerful, healthy, empowered people exist within a population, the larger society can benefit and thrive. We have the ability to strengthen our culture from the inside out. I pull from a wide range of influences. Although my full-time job is working as a therapist and program director at Mile High Behavioral Healthcare and The Denver ELEMENT, most of my inspiration comes from interactions in my personal life. Through my intellectual, emotional, and intimate exchanges, my brain goes into overdrive and causes a metaphorical lightbulb 24

AUGUST 05, 2015

to pop above my head frequently. It can happen at the gym, during social events, in the middle of a counseling session, or at 4:30am when the light from my phone wakes my partner as I’m taking notes on a new idea. Truth be told, so many of my columns also reflect my own past or current insecurities, frustrations, realizations, and hopes for the future. Most people find it hard to believe that my own journey to develop confidence to engage with people socially only started about ten years ago. I was the quintessential shy, awkward, gay, intelligent, introverted, timid, and self-loathing goth kid growing up feeling that I wasn’t a viable part of the gay community. I didn’t look like anyone else or relate to what I perceived was going on in the larger queer culture. It took me many years and a huge dedication of energy and effort to work on those parts of myself that kept me trapped and miserable. Through personal and professional experiences, I’ve had some amazing opportunities to see individuals take control of their lives and develop skills to deal more effectively with the world and form stronger relationships inside of it. I’m honored to lend my experience as a counselor paired with a sarcastic, sometimes twisted sense of humor and conglomeration of life experiences to create columns that speak to issues faced by many of us. I honestly love getting calls or emails from people asking for my insight or perspective on a variety of topics and situations. Even if these aren’t directly addressed specifically in a column, I do my best to respond to them or have their idea rear its head somewhere later. Almost every week, I get to talk to people who pull me aside to discuss how a topic of one of the columns has affected them or ask if I have time to offer a perspective on something going on with them currently. Sometimes they don’t feel so alone in their experiences and are put at ease knowing many others experience similar challenges. It encourages and makes me feel extremely happy to know that this column has been both entertaining and helpful to many people. My ability to provide outreach has been supported by some wonderful individuals within the Out Front family throughout the years. They have supported me through challenging times, done their best to aid me in becoming a better writer, and pushed me to develop more confidence in expressing my perceptions. I have to thank Jay Klein, Jerry Cunningham, JC McDonald, Matt Kailey, Nic Garcia, Holly Hatch, Matt Pizzuti, and now Berlin Sylvestre for continuing to inspire, challenge, and support me in my efforts to have a positive impact in our community and culture. I’m truly grateful for this opportunity and looking forward to the next 100 columns!

There are 613 laws in the Old Testament. 247 are found in Leviticus.

Why doesn’t Leviticus say anything about a woman laying with another woman? In antiquity, it was thought that “life” existed in semen. If semen was lost, a life was lost.

According to Leviticus 19:28, tattoos are forbidden. One in five American adults has a tattoo.

There are 31,202 verses in the Old & New Testaments. People use six of these to make an argument against homosexuality. King James’ version of The Bible has roughly 780,000 words. Among those, about 200 comprise the clobber passages. That means 0.00026 percent of The Bible only supposedly condemns homosexuality.

Neville: We were transfixed by the debates and the characters of Vidal and Buckley themselves. It felt like a great drama being played by two intellectuals who understood how to play their characters. We intrinsically felt that these debates said something about news today and the role of commentary, but it wasn’t until we really got into working on the film that we realized just how deep this ran. How did you strive to make Best of Enemies so even-handed, or is there a subtle favoritism? G: We’ve had people believe it goes both ways. Look at how these guys are engaging to try to change people’s minds. The notion of a public intellectual is anathema today. They are dueling in this verbal bloodsport to save the nation. The film is a eulogy to public intellectuals.

BEST OF ENEMIES A HIGHLY ENTERTAINING AND EXTREMELY engaging

documentar y, Best of Enemies presents the ten famous televised debates between Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley, Jr. during the 1968 presidential nominating conventions. Directors Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom) and Rober t Gordon show how these compulsively watchable arguments “changed television forever.” Gary M. Kramer

They provide astute portraits of both men — the “great debater” Buckley, and the “great talker,” Vidal — to show how evenly matched they were … and how much they despised one another. The film builds to that famous heated moment in the ninth debate, where Buckley responds to Vidal calling him a “crypto-Nazi” by calling him a “queer.” It is breathtaking, even for folks who know or remember the moment. Gordon spoke with us via phone, and Neville participated in an email exchange to discuss

their film and the two public intellectuals whose arguments make them the “Best of Enemies.”

N: We decided from the start that we didn’t want to make a film about the arguments, as much as make a film about how we argue. It’s the meta-conversation that seemed most important. What does TV do to how deal with people in a democracy? What role does it play in what brings us together and what divides us? We also wanted to portray a relationship, not a full biography of each man. At some level, we felt we had to empathize with each of them to understand that. How much you think Vidal’s sexuality played into his celebrity and Buckley’s hatred? N: There was gay baiting in the debates by both men from the start. Vidal’s sexuality was in deep conflict with Buckley’s pre-Vatican II Catholicism. Vidal enjoyed this, though he embraced the radicalness of his moral ideas more than playing on his sexuality directly. Vidal did needle Buckley about his own sexuality. I think he did this not thinking about the politics or message of it, but rather because he thought it would rattle Buckley. And it did. Oddly, through his wife, Buckley became friendly with a large circle of gay New Yorkers. He was, by most accounts, a fairly tolerant person is his private life. Vidal had a special role as his bete noire.

What prompted you to make this film and use the Buckley-Vidal debates as the fulcrum for exploring the current state of affairs?

Why do you think the two men were so good together? Was it because they brought out the worst in the other?

Gordon: I was raised with Buckley and Vidal in my consciousness. When I saw the debates in 2010, I was so struck by how contemporary they were, and how they anticipated the cultured wars and articulated them so well.

G: There are qualities in each that are to be admired. One aspect of this is what attracted me: the high minded on the low road. That’s what gets them. You think they’d stay out of name-calling, but that’s where they ended up.

28TH ANNUAL AIDS WALK COLORADO IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR again, and we’re proud to

have such an enthusiast group of people join us at Cheesman Park for the annual AIDS Walk event. WHAT IS AIDS WALK COLORADO? AIDS Walk Colorado serves as a day to remember those we have lost to AIDS, as well as celebrate the lives of those who are living with the disease. Nearly 10,000 people from throughout the state come together to raise awareness of HIV’s continuing presence in Colorado, as well as to raise money for vital services for HIV/AIDS clients of Colorado Health Network’s regional Colorado AIDS Project offices in Denver, Grand Junction, and Fort Collins, as well as Howard Dental Center in Denver.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT AT AIDS WALK COLORADO? The event includes a 5K Walk and Run (course certified by USA Track & Field and a Boulder Bolder qualifier), as well as the Celebration of Life Festival with vendors, food, and a host of other activities!

NEW ROUTE With the growth of Denver’s Capitol Hill (and its traffic congestion), AIDS Walk Colorado has created a new route for the 5K Walk and Run. This new route will keep walkers and runners north of 8th Ave, eliminating the need to close this very busy thoroughfare, keeping our participants safe, and allowing RTD public transportation to remain unaltered. The new 40

AUGUST 05, 2015

route also allows for a more challenging workout for our 5K Run participants!

AIDS MEMORIAL QUILT One of the most touching components of AIDS Walk Colorado includes the Memorial Garden located at the Cheesman Park Pavilion. Many event participants specifically request to see panels that have been created to honor loved ones. These and other Colorado-specific panels will be on display throughout the event. Event attendees can also add their messages of hope and remembrance to this year’s tribute banners and see tributes from years past.

DIVA DASH The .5K Diva Dash Stiletto Fun Run is one of the most entertaining components of AIDS Walk Colorado! Strap on your favorite pair of heels and don your festive diva garb, then hit the pavement for a quick 1,461 feet of click-clacking fun! Or, if you’re not brave enough to run, pick a spot along the short route or near the finish line to cheer on our divas! Men, women, and children are welcome to participate. No registration fee is required for the Diva Dash — just a pair of heels! If you forget your heels, we’ll have some in the park that you can borrow!

VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT Produced in conjunction with Colorado Gay Volleyball Association, this grass tournament is a day-long competition. The tournament features several rounds of competition in traditional bracket-elimination style for teams of all skill levels — beginner, intermediate, and advanced.

HOW DOES AIDS WALK COLORADO HELP OUR COMMUNITY? Funds raised by AIDS Walk Colorado help pay for services provided to individuals in our state living with or affected by HIV. Colorado Health Network (made up of Denver Colorado AIDS Project, Southern Colorado AIDS Project, Northern Colorado AIDS Project, and Western Colorado AIDS Project, along with Howard Dental Center in Denver) serves nearly 6,000 individuals annually with comprehensive case management, individual and group counseling, transportation assistance, housing services, insurance and connection to care, oral health care, and nutrition services that provided nearly 150,000 meals in 2014. In addition, CHN’s prevention services include educational outreach to at-risk populations and free testing for HIV and STIs. CHN distributes more than 100,000 free condoms annually and hosts legal syringe-exchange programs in all areas of the state, removing nearly 123,000 used syringes from our communities, and thereby that many possible HIV transmissions. ROCKY MOUNTAIN REGIONAL RODEO Rocky Mountain Regional Rodeo 33 was held at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds on July 10, 11, and 12. Heavy rains earlier in the week muddied the main arena and forced the festivities indoors. Events included bull riding, chute dogging, calf roping, barrel racing, pole bending, goat dressing, and the wild drag race. This year’s charity partners were Jefferson County Mounted Search & Rescue and Rainbow Alley. Photo by Charles Broshous

SAVING FACE ALTHOUGH THERE IS NOW A clear path to marriage in every state, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be flooded with wedding invites — straight people have been masterfully avoiding that track for decades. But the happy unions that you do attend will no doubt be emotional. Kelsey Lindsey

Just think about this deadly tearinducing equation that sums up the wedding-going experience:

DENVER’S BEST PAITO Soak up some sun, sip on a cocktail, and enjoy a juicy burger on Denver's best patio!

Gays have finally obtained a basic right denied to them for decades + two human people have both found their soul mates in this crazy world and are dedicating literally THE REST OF THEIR LIVES to him or her + love, and maybe a strong scent of flowers that you may or may not be allergic to is in the air = a sh*tstorm of happy tears, free flowing and intermixing with your snot to form a salty lagoon of human bodily fluids on your face. Now if that didn’t snap you out of your SCOTUS-loving happy glow, I don’t know what will. Thankfully, there are some tips and tricks out there to help you literally save face after you witness this newly formed union. Now you’ll probably have a short amount of time to recover from the ceremony pre-reception, so find yourself a bathroom or some ice cubes stat. Press a cold paper towel or ice cube under your eyes, starting at the outer corners and moving on outward. This will help reduce the swelling by draining the fluid out from under your eyes. If

46

AUGUST 05, 2015

you are prone to waterworks, come prepared with an eye de-puffer that contains caffeine to help draw out water from the skin. Another pre-ceremony precaution: waterproof mascara and eyeliner. If you didn’t come prepared and now look like any emotional girl on any reality TV show, raccoon eyes and all, try to scrounge up some cotton swabs and dap at the mascara streaks. Avoid wiping the spots with a tissue, as this will tend to spread the makeup and cause an even bigger mess. For red eyes, use an over-thecounter drop, preferably with a redness-reducing formula. Blue eyeliner on the lower eyelid will also counteract the redness and help you look more awake. Finally, that Rudolph nose. Concealer is the easiest solution for that blotchy skin, preferably a liquid solution that helps you spot treat the redness around the eyes and nose. Avoid powder, as adding an extra layer may make you look cakey. Now saddle up, grab some champagne, and toast to this historic union (and maybe the notorious RBG while the glasses are still raised).

ASK A SLUT [WARNING: GRAPHIC]

You gurls are hilarious! Have you ever considered doing a television series? What would that be like? Signed, SEEING STARS Bea: Absolutely! I’m thinking a reality series: “Glitter Gone Wild” or a late-night show, “Clitter Gone Wild.” The cameras could follow us from dumpster to dumpster showing straight girls how to give prostate massages on the “straight” bachelors that just keep getting away.

Latexa: We’ve thought about TV but the FCC already has a ban on sum of us (me, nip slip, don’t ask). Anyway, it would be a mashup of Maude and the Golden Girls, but with more lube.

Cookie: Well it ain’t gonna be like Golden Girls. More like Iron Gurls. We would throw stuff at each other, and be half drunk most of the time, insults flying around. Oh wait, they already made a show like that: Jersey Shore.

JackLynn: Television is not big enough, and with the invention of HDTV, oh my. Besides, most of what we do comedy-wise wouldn’t be allowed on prime time.

How do you beat the heat of the summer? Signed, H OT IN THE CITY Bea: I usually prefer to beat someone else’s dark hot meat. Zoey: I drink iced drinks. Like vodka. LaTexa: Well, since I am Nosferatu, I spend most of my days sleeping in my crypt, but when I so have to deal with the heat, a frozen cocktail usually does the trick.

Cookie: First you start with taking off your clothes. Then you stand under the fan I have in my living room. I can then spray you down with a cool mist. I suppose that if that doesn’t work, we could find other ways to cool down. Perhaps we need to heat things up first and then cool down. Let me know what would work for you.

JackLynn: Swamp cooler, not to be mistaken for swamp ass. And then baby, you beat it just the way you do in the winter time, every day, especially if you don’t have a boy toy.

Do you have any advice for any newbies in this gay world? Signed, BRIGHT EYED AND BUSHY TAILED

Now that SCOTUS has legalized all marriages, are any of you girls going to tie the knot? Signed, REV. DR. HARRY C. BEAVER

Bea: AWWWWW, you’re so cute. Write when you’re bushy

Bea: Well, What’s up, Doc? Are you single? I can hear it now,

50

eyed and bright tailed, then you’ll be close to relating to what it’s really like. You know, like when you wake up in the back of Trader Joe’s covered in coconut, your ass is sore, and it’s been three days since you only came in for a bottle of water.

Mrs. Dr. Bea Beaver. It just kind of rolls of the tongue. (wink) How do you feel about a little dumpster diving? Do you have a big diver for the dumpster Queen? Call me! The answer for your question, marriage is for the desperate. CALL ME!

Zoey: Stay away from LaTexa — she will warp you.

Zoey: I can’t commit to just one guy. Except my husband.

LaTexa: We were all newbies once and someone held our hands

LaTexa: NO, I am gaily incorrect. I come from a time when gay

to teach us the world of filthy gay sex. If you don’t have someone to guide you, I’d be more than happy to ruin, I mean teach you.

people could not get married, could not adopt a kid, and were not allowed in the military. Those things were perks, and I liked it.

Cookie: Well Bright Eyed and Bushy Tailed, I know a place

Cookie: Well, yes, just not the kind of knots you’re thinking of.

where you can wag that new little tail. There are a lot of puppies in the area and I would be happy to introduce to them to you.

My kind of knot involves suspension and bondage. (I don’t think SCOTUS will ever truly legalize what I have in mind.)

JackLynn: This first thing you gotta do is get that sh*t waxed

JackLynn: I am never getting married again! Too hard to hide

— nobody likes a bushy tail.

the bodies.
