SWEATER LETTER
H
oly crap y’all, another year has gone by! We know there are all kinds of queer feels about Christmas, from “get your weird religion off my winter season” to “OMG more trees, please!” But this year, considering that OFM has beaten the odds and stuck it out for three years post-COVID as a small publication, we feel we have a lot to be grateful for. So, forgive us if we get a little sappy this holiday season. OFM would like to thank each and every one of you for helping to keep us alive. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never spent a dime with us, if you don’t have a business to promote or $5 to spare and support us. If you are reading this, you’re either adding to our online views by hovering on this page online or helping our pick-up rate by reading it at a distribution location or picking up a free copy. You might even be a subscriber! Whatever your connection, whether you’ve been reading us for years or just discovered us two minutes ago, thank you. Folks simply being interested in our free content and engaging with it is helping keep queer media and independent media alive. OK, sappiness aside, we are here; we’re queer, and we made it through another year, so enjoy some super fun goofy, gooey gifts and ugly sweaters. The world can be a tough place to navigate, but if you’re reading this, you made it another year too, and we’re so proud of you. (OK we lied, the sappiness wasn’t quite over).

YOUR
GUIDE TO...
MIKE JOHNSON by Owen Swallows
I
WE'RE SORRY this is necessary!
f there was any doubt of the Christian Right's influence in the modern GOP, all of that has flown out the window. With the election of Representative Mike Johnson to be Speaker of House, the House of Representatives is now being helmed by an evangelical radical.
The Louisiana republican rose to prominence through an unusual set of circumstances, although circumstances that were by design of the furthest right elements of the republican caucus. After Representative Matt Gaetz torpedoed former Speaker McCarthy, there was a historic power vacuum which resulted in three failed speakership bids by other more prominent members of republican leadership. Johnson emerged as someone whom the Freedom Caucus would applaud, and centrists could stomach him. Johnson is a true "compromise" candidate in that republican centrists have compromised whatever principles compelled them to oppose Jim Jordan. Although Johnson may not be as well-known, it doesn’t make him any less dangerous. A brief look at the bills he has introduced and his policy statements give you a clear idea of the man’s values. Johnson was the architect of H.R. 9197, a national version of the “Don’t Say Gay” bill,
8 OFM DECEMBER 2 0 2 3
which defines any discussion of gender identity or orientation as sexually oriented. Johnson has advocated for conversion therapy and sponsored a bill to make it more difficult for people to cross state lines to access abortion services. He has called for Obergefell v. Hodges to be overturned and for the institution of nationwide abortion ban. In 2005, Johnson even wrote editorials in which he lamented the inclusion of sexual orientation and gender identity in anti-discrimination policy, calling homosexual behavior “destructive to individuals, families, and society at large.” To be clear, Johnson is emblematic of every point in cultural conservatism, from abortion to queer rights to cannabis legalization. Johnson falls lockstep with far-right mainstays like Focus on the Family and the Heritage Foundation on nearly every social issue. In fact, Johnson’s legal career is defined by his work with the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), an organization for which Johnson served as a spokesperson. ADF, as an organization, aims to curtail the rights LGBTQ+ people and expand Christian practices in public schools and government. The Southern Poverty Law Center designated the ADF as a hate group in 2017 for their fervent opposition to queer
rights. In his work with the ADF, Johnson authored an amicus brief in support of maintaining criminalization of homosexuality. While we hold no ill-will towards Christians, or even Evangelicals for that matter, we do find the institutionalization of religion in our government absolutely repugnant and antithetical to the founding principles of our nation. For a party that boasts its adherence to constitutional originalism, it sure seems that the GOP has taken a flexible stance when it comes to separation of church and state. Johnson’s entire career has been based on degrading this bedrock value of secularism of the state. Religious liberty is not the imposition of your personal religious beliefs into our government. Religious liberty is not the right to deny services to individuals you think God looks down upon. The bastardization of the idea of religious liberty by the Christian Right has done nothing but diminish true religious freedom in America. In our nation’s history, Johnson is uniquely unqualified for the role of speaker both in terms of his experience and his disregard for the very institutions of American democracy. Being elected to the House in 2016 and only holding elected office since 2015, Johnson has, in total, eight years of government experience. Johnson only recently became Vice Chair of the House Republican Committee. What’s more, Johnson was among the 147 republicans who voted to overturn the 2020 election results, and he opposed establishing a committee to investigate the January 6 storming of the capital. In response to Johnson's swift rise to power in the House, the Colorado Democratic Party Chair Shad Murib releases a statement: "Mike Johnson will be the most extreme Speaker of the House in history, and his deeply unpopular MAGA agenda will be an absolute disaster for Colorado families. It’s even more shameful that Johnson received such enthusiastic support from local embarrassments Lauren Boebert, Ken Buck, and Doug Lamborn. Johnson won his party’s vote by passing every MAGA litmus test ..." Evangelical christians have been an integral faction in the Republican Party dating back to Reagan’s election. Now Mike Johnson, who not only represents the Christian Right but has acted as an agent of it, spearheads not just the House Republican Caucus, but the very lower house itself. Johnson may be a new face in government, but his politics are the same far-right, Christian extremism that has threatened the functioning of our government in the first place. The GOP now, more than ever, has solidified its connection to anti-LGBTQ+ bigotry dressed up in Southern hospitality and a fancy tie.

Traditional Tattoo Artist
is Speaking
O U T
by Micah Howell
J
essi Hildebrandt (they/them) has been a tattoo artist for a little over three years in Seattle, Washington . Hildebrant recently shared their story about the abuse they went through growing up in the Mormon church, but specifically the abuse and isolation they encountered with their aunt, Jodi Hildebrandt. OFM had the chance to chat with Hildebrandt about their story and learn more about who Jessi is.
Let me begin by asking, who is Jessi Hildebrandt? That's such a tough question. Ever evolving, insatiably curious, definitely someone that has to learn from experience and not from other people's bad choices, a hands-on learner, driven. It's tough Because I feel like as a nonbinary person, it's (about) trying to live outside of this or that. But I think curiosity and intentional as well. Those are my core values. How did your journey with queerness begin? I've known something was different when I was probably 6 or 7. Second grade, when I started experimenting with my friends, and they seemingly were like, this is not really my thing. I don't know. It's just kind of fun. I feel like that's probably a pretty common experience for people. Thinking about this makes me so happy, and I think it's so funny. I remember Googling. I had no idea about cookies or history. I was just Googling boobs. After I get
1 0 OFM DECEMBER 2 0 2 3
caught, my parents had the sex talk. But my family is very, very religious, very conservative, and believe very strongly that sex should be taught in the home and not in school and not through the government. it was when a man and a woman loved each other, they lay naked and then had babies; okay, we will never talk about this ever again. So, I pushed that down real hard, I pushed down this feeling of being queer. And the messaging that I had all around me was, being gay is disgusting. Being gay is evil. Being gay destroys families and destroys the church. I had a crush on the trans kid at my school, and I never was going to talk about it. I was so terrified of repercussions, you know, the eternal salvation backlash, that I just shoved it down, shoved it down. That was kind of the beginning of admitting it to myself in any sort of real, intentional way. Obviously, it is a process of unlearning and relearning and self acceptance. Can you talk more on the abuse and isolation queer folks experience? Mormonism is very anti-gay. the world was anti gay, predominantly, and in the microcosm of Mormonism was especially anti gay. I mean, the things that I went through. There are many reasons that my aunt used as rationale to treat me the way she treated me, my queerness being one of them. That it's a sexual addiction. And, like, all queer people, they are just “sex addicts.” sexual deviance, which is not a new story narrative that we've heard throughout history. I internalized that for a really long time. If I was acting out in any way, sexual queerness being one of them, then you have sin inside of you, and you need to confess that sin. And in order to get someone to confess, you need to make them as uncomfortable as possible to force—in her words— force the sin out, which is just torture. Like, that's just a euphemism for torture and to do anything to get what you want by any means. And, yeah, and that's what she did for just under a year, which is very ironic given, and I don't, by no means am I
trying to out someone that is not ready to be outed, especially even someone as horrendous as Jodi. The amount of questions and lack of clarity around her own sexuality is just very deeply disturbing and sad. What’s one thing that has helped you work through your trauma and mental health challenges? I can't say that it's, like, one thing in particular I can hang my hat on. Learning how to self-witness, learning how to find that within myself through inner child work, saying all the things that I was craving to myself—I see you. even just saying “I see you,” I remember the first time I did that, and I just immediately broke down. I was so desperate for mirroring and learning how to do that for myself. I think that has been one of the most helpful tools in my healing. What do you hope audiences take away from hearing your story? There's a number of things, one of them being, these types of stories are not unique. My story is not unique. My story may seem sensational because of the extreme nature of it. But people, queer folk, marginalized folk, go through similar experiences all of the time. This is not a unique story; this is not an isolated moment, or an isolated incident. And what I think that we need to do as a community is start looking at where we are disempowered to step in, and to call out and to call in. Abusers take advantage of disempowered systems. It was those adults that were willing to stand up even if they couldn't do it completely. It is ingrained into my memory. And I don't know who I would be without those moments. You never know what your impact is going to be on children of abuse. What was it about the tattooing specifically that you learned to love about it? I didn't even know that I liked visual art until I was about 20 or 25. I was always getting tattooed from age 18. I already loved the culture and loved the scene. And when I was 25, outfrontmagazine.com 11
when I found that I enjoyed art, I also learned that I'm potentially highly related to one of the grandfathers of traditional Americana, Martin Hildebrandt. So I just decided to claim him as my own. Body art is just a really beautiful experience and has brought me so much joy to facilitate it and to experience it myself. Do you have a favorite tattoo? I just did a stomach piece a few days ago. It's one design that I reclaimed. I loved my client, so I just loved every part of the tattoo. I feel like 95 to 98% of my clients, by the end of the tattoo, I'm like, “Are we friends? Are you my best friend? What's happening?” It's just so fun. I absolutely love all the time I get with my clients. And this piece I was really proud of, and they loved it. I loved it. It was just a really great experience. We all have things that are therapeutic to us; do you tattoo as something that's therapeutic? I think getting tattooed, for me, is a form of—kind of like what I was saying (about) reclaiming and self-ownership. So in that way, I definitely think it's like a form of self care, at least for me, (and) I know that (it is) for a lot of my clients it is as well. And so being able to facilitate that is just really, really cool. As we wrap up, is there anything I've missed that you would like to share? Something I would love to leave on is just a message of hope. There is healing available; there are people who will love you and accept you. There are communities around you that are wanting you. If you feel alone and isolated, just keep going. I know that can sound patronizing, but there is hope and for myself that was a really important thing that kept me alive is the hope for something more and the hope for something better and more beautiful. MEET M
MEG GIBBS
eg Gibbs, (she/her, and a sprinkle of they) queer Somatic Spiritual Guide, Master Intuitive Coach, and author, seems like a healer. Her gentle, kind demeanor, sweet presence, and soft patience created a sense of immediate warmth and acceptance during our conversation. And this feeling persisted, even as Gibbs opened up about her grief over her mother's death, her journey into spiritual guidance, and the book she spent 10 years working up the courage to write. Family is pivotal to Gibbs. Her spiritual background began with her family, who encouraged a rich education in the ancient healing and religious practice of shamanism. Gibbs began her journey in shamanism, which is centered on a connection with nature and the spirit world, with a Lakota teacher at only 11 years old. "It feels important to really honor the teachers and the lineages that

In 2011, Gibbs was working in the nonprofit sector, at a job where she was continually stressed and worn down, when her mother, who had recurrent cancer, was diagnosed for the third time. But this time, the cancer metastasized and spread, and her mother passed away. "In that experience, it just got really clear that I didn't want to do a job and spend most of my time away from things that I cared about and people that I cared about," Gibbs reflects. "I kind of say that my bullshit factor went way down. I only wanted to talk to people that really wanted to have a deep, engaging conversation, and I wanted to ask about things that were important to them."
In the midst of this personal shift, she explored life coaching as a potential new career path. "There was something energetically that just settled for me," she says. "And because I had this spiritual background, I thought, 'Oh, maybe someday I'll intertwine the two, but I'm not quite sure how that works." "As I went through coach training, there was so much space to include all of these different parts of yourself," she adds. "Because I wanted to have these important or deep, powerful conversations, I found a job that, essentially, 1 4 OFM DECEMBER 2 0 2 3

you just start the conversation by (asking) 'What are your dreams? What are your fears? What are you here on this planet to do?" She even found a way to intertwine her 20 years as a dancer into her new line of work and included embodiment and somatic practices. For Gibbs, somatic work means connecting the mind, body, and spirit, grounding clients, and encouraging them to listen to their intuition. "I feel like 90 % of what I do is just listening," she says. "But it's kind of on this larger level of listening with my body, listening to the energy with my intuition, and checking in with the client." Her role as a coach shifts with every client and every session. It might be branding work, a ceremony, or a workshop. During the session, she might be a dating coach or a business coach. But she always holds space for the client, and together, they look at things through a spiritual lens. "(A client and I) were looking for somebody on her inner council or her team, like your spiritual guides or internal advisors, as a way to connect to something with some unconditional love," Gibbs says, describing a particularly moving coaching session. "So we were looking for a part of her that could hold her with unconditional love, and ... it ended up being one of her dogs who passed away." "So this dog, once we could connect with the energy of it and the spirit and the voice of it, it really helped her get through a hard time in her life where she was being super critical of herself," she adds. "And to hear the spirit of her dog's voice as someone on her team, as a being who loved her and supported her unconditionally, was a really beautiful moment of inner support." This fall, she wrapped up a project that has been in the works for over a decade and published her book, Spiritually Parented, in September. It has been Gibbs's dream to co-create a book with her mother about their collective spiritual journeys, but one she couldn't fulfill before her mother's passing. It took Gibbs 10 years and three restarts to write her book. It delves into her grief over losing her mom, and even five years after her mother passed, Gibbs would cry every time she sat down to write. In February of 2021, on the 10-year anniversary of her mother's death, she was finally ready. Spiritually Parented is a hybrid book and includes memoir-esque writing as well as exercises and guided meditations to help the reader connect with their own spiritual or intuitive journey. "I want people to know that they have permission to be who they are and that there are exercises and practical support pieces to take action towards what they want to be creating in their world," she says. "Whether that's internal, personal safety or programs, or offerings they want to do with other folks as a practitioner. It really is part of the journey." In a way, Gibbs got her wish—She was able to write the book with the help of her mother, whom she says is "not a quiet dead person. Meaning that she still talks to me," she explains. "I invited her into certain parts of the writing process. I would be writing a chapter, and then I would pause and I would ... open the conversation and say, 'What do you want to add to this? Is there more? What feels important to you to share?' Just like I'm having ... a coaching conversation with a client." As for her motivations for writing the book, "I feel like so many of us ... want to create something that we needed growing up or that we wish we had access to," she says. "I have lesbian moms, and I'm a second-generation healer in my family, and we grew up in kind of this alternative way, and I have this big, beautiful gay family around me. I wanted that story to be presented as 'normal,' because I grew up with gayness being normalized, which most people don't." Follow Meg on Instagram @meggibbswrites outfrontma ga zine.com 15
