FROM THE PUBLISHER

OUR GUIDE FOR EACH OTHER By Jerry Cunningham Owner / Publisher of Out Front

O

ut Front was founded in the spring of 1976, and our longevity is due not only to all the hard work and dedication of all those who have worked with and for Out Front over the past 38 years, but because of Colorado’s thriving LGBT and allied community we’ve been lucky to be part of. Every year Out Front is faced with the question of what it is means to be living an LGBT life. It has been our hope that we offer the latest news and thought-provoking editorial that engages our readers to learn, thrive and grow. We are more than a social magazine, and, yes, we’re also more than entertainment and political news. We strive to be a platform where the community connects — for speaking out, for finding resources and allies, for letting people know if you’re a resource or an ally, and for compiling the best knowledge and information for moving forward, as a community but as individuals as well. It’s that time of year when things seem to be growing and springing to life, the perfect time to begin to think about what we can do to renew ourselves and to better balance our own lives. And what better time than spring to revisit, reprioritize, and even reinvent ourselves and the lives we find ourselves living with our inaugural LGBT Living Guide? We have an amazing community — amazing for the creative talents and experiences found in it and also for the willingness we find in the LGBT and allied community to share our abilities as contributions to something greater, striving for a better world. This Living Guide is a highlight of many of these contributions, with tips and knowledge on anything from improving your credit score to feeling more fulfilled in relationships. It also includes a business directory, presented by the Denver Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and serving as a who’s-who of just how many LGBT and LGBT-friendly service providers and resources there are out there — here in Colorado you’re truly not alone. We hope that you too will revisit, reprioritize, reconnect and maybe even reinvent yourself from what you learn and read in the pages that follow. Thanks again for your continued support over the years, and if you too have a piece of advice or tip on life that you would like to share, we would love to hear from you. Give us a call, drop us an email, or connect with us on Facebook — Out Front is your platform. Here’s to you and living life audaciously!

THINGS TO CONSIDER IN STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS

O

wning a business sounds romantic and exciting — but before you embark on the time-consuming and financially risky endeavor, take a minute to think about all of the logistics involved. Business is all about smarts and responsibility, and your success depends on the time and knowledge you put in! ¢ BE SMART ABOUT LOCATION.

Opening a business in an established area brings automatic publicity from foot traffic alone — a great help given the cost of advertising. Think of high-traffic streets and well-developed areas where the scene matches your envisioned customers: up-and-coming districts like the Colfax business district or Santa Fe Art District are great areas for startups with established neighborhood associations and a sense of community. ¢ SAVE FOR STARTUP COSTS AND START

SLOW ON SPENDING. Rather than taking out a big loan, consider saving in advance and find small investors for initial startup costs. You’ll have more than one chance to remodel and get the interior loftiness you want, so don’t expect your storefront to look perfect on opening day. Instead, spend money as you make money. Think about it: you can feel out the market and develop strategies as you go, but if you take out a loan and don’t start strong enough to make payments, your dream could

end up being owned by the bank.

City and County of Denver offers free workshops and classes for small business owners, and courses are available at local colleges. The money you spend on classes is tax-deductible and a fraction of the success they bring.

BUILD STRONG RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE COMMUNITY. No business is effective in a vacuum or solely because of the owner; it takes a village. Owners Jody Bouffard & Holly Hatch of nearby businesses, Co-owners, Blush & Blu, members of local gov¢ DON’T HIRE YOUR A Distinct Drinkery ernment and people in FRIENDS! Remember: it’s not personal, need a favor or advice. it’s business. ¢

¢ TAKE A SMALL BUSINESS WORKSHOP.

One of the most valuable lessons a new business owner can learn is that you don’t know everything. From marketing, public relations and branding to financial investments, money tracking, accounting, record-keeping and everyday maintenance like budgeting for inventory, there are many areas where being knowledgeable helps. FIVE APPROACHES FOR DEALING WITH A JOB YOU HATE

A

n old adage says, “work isn’t supposed to be fun — that is why it is called work.” In some ways this is true, but if your job is turning every day into a Monday and leaving you physically and emotionally drained, it may be time to reconsider your options. Here are five tips that can help make your days on the job more bearable.

Jeffrey Hoyle Marketing & Public Relations Professional

#1 REMEMBER, NOTHING IS FOREVER.  As awful as your job may seem today, tomorrow may be different. In a challenging job market, it may be best to stick it out until another option presents itself. It also is not uncommon to have multiple career changes in your life. Keep your eye on the prize and try to power through until you can make a positive change to a better situation. #2 ADD SOME FUN TO THE MIX.  Who says a workday can’t be fun? Listening to music (if you are allowed to), taking a moment to check out the latest online

news, even taking your lunch offsite can help break up the doldrums and make the day go by faster. Sharing a few laughs with co-workers can also help make the day lighter. #3 SET SOME SPECIFIC JOB HUNTING GOALS AND STICK TO THEM.  To make a change, you have to be the change. Consider your options, weigh the pros and cons of leaving your current job, and if everything lines up start planning an exit strategy. Start sprucing up your resume, peruse the classifieds and online job stores, or enlist the help of a professional headhunter to help get the balls rolling. #4 EXPLORE INTERESTS OUTSIDE WORK.  There are 24 hours in a day; on average you spend eight of those hours at work and eight hours asleep. That leaves you eight hours for enjoying yourself! Exercising, joining in an organized sports league, reading, even playing video games

can take your mind off your job and help recharge your body and your mind for the next day ahead. #5 ALLOW YOURSELF TIME TO VENT. It is probably best to take this option outside of the workplace, but it is okay to vent about what is wrong with your job and how it makes you feel. Friends or family make great sounding boards; co-workers not so much as you run the risk of your feelings getting back to the higher-ups of the organization. Choose what you say as carefully as you do who you say it to. The trick to staying positive in the workplace is to turn negatives into positives until you can find a better position. Keeping your eyes on the prize, your future can be bigger and brighter than you ever dreamed. Jeffery Hoyle is a Marketing and Public Relations Professional in Denver. Learn more at emphasismc.com.

MOVING UP: TIPS FOR LANDING A JOB R ather than worrying too much about whether you should apply for a certain job — when the worst answer you can get is ‘no’ — be confident, ambitious, realize that no one is entitled (you’ll probably have to apply for many positions before getting one), and give yourself the best possible shot during the application process.

Keo Frazier Marketing CEO

PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD. Your resume may be the first time someone meets you. It’s imperative to ensure your resume demonstrates your best. Don’t let bad formatting, spelling or grammar errors put your resume at the end of the pile.

BE OVER-PREPARED. Being over prepared is always the best way to go. Hence, bring extra copies of your resume, allot extra time to drive there… you get the idea. BE ON TIME — NOT EARLY AND NOT LATE. My biggest pet peeve is when someone arrives 20 minutes before or 20 minutes after an appointment. Instead of taking the chance of rubbing someone the wrong way, just walk in exactly on time.

DRESS TO IMPRESS. Your attire is important. Know your audience and dress accordingly. Always be clean and neat being sure your clothes match the great impression you are striving for. It is better to over-dress than to under-dress.

REMEMBER TO FOLLOW UP. This is the easiest part but often the most forgotten. Following up will ensure you’re building a relationship for the future. You will show you pay attention to details. You can also highlight points from your interview. And, whether you get the job or not, you will be remembered by how you follow up.

DICTION IS YOUR FRIEND. Articulating yourself with good, clear diction demonstrates your knowledge, education and reinforces your skills.

FIVE THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE COMMITTING FOR LIFE

A

re you feeling like you might be ready to settle down? Mazel tov — but make sure you are both on the same page before you sign paperwork, buy a house together, or sell of our your belongings and travel the world as a couple.

both willing to meet somewhere in the middle and form an equal partnership. One of you loves cats, the other loves dogs; can you have one of each, or both live without pets? You love high-rise city living, your partner wants to start a goat farm in Grand Junction — how will you have a conversation in which both of you feel heard and validated with the end result?

#1  CAN YOU MAKE YOUR COMMUNICATION SKILLS MATCH?  It’s easy to say “they just get me so Shanna Katz well,” but what happens when you Board Certified come across a miscommunication or #3  HAVE THE MONEY TALK.  A Sexologist and difference of opinions? What if one big issue couples have is pretending money doesn’t matter and love will of you communicates verbally and Sex Educator solve it all. Even if it is just deciding processes on the spot, while the other is more of a quiet, internal processor, whether you’ll have a joint account or who communicates through writing? Make sure keep separate finances, or figuring out who pays you can get onto the same wavelength in order for cable and who pays for groceries, make sure to move both of your needs and wants forward. the two of you have conversations about money before it’s time to file taxes and drop a deposit #2  DO YOU BOTH HAVE A VESTED INTEREST on your new place. IN COMPROMISING?  You don’t have to plan our your entire life with your love today before #4 ESTABLISH SOME “GROUND RULES” TO KEEP you ride off into the sunset, but make sure you’re YOU CLOSE.  Whether you’ve been together six

weeks, six years or six decades, it’s important to lay groundwork for loving up on one another. If you have a fight, how will you reconnect? When you’re both busy with life, when will you fit in date night? How will you celebrate accomplishments and milestones? Make sure you are ready to keep caring for each other and re-connecting long term. #5 MAKE SURE YOU’RE OK BEING TOGETHER AND ALONE.  Being in a couple can feel like a full time job, but it’s also important to have time for yourself. Have a conversation about what “me time” looks like for each of you, and how to gently tell the other when you need that self-care. If you’re already cohabiting, touch base with each other to make sure those needs are getting met, and that each half of your power couple is just as strong as an individual. EXPERT ADVICE FOR PLANNING YOUR PERFECT WEDDING FIRST AND FOREMOST, ENJOY THE PROCESS OF PLANNING YOUR SPECIAL DAY.  Hours and hours of time will go into touring venues, hiring professionals, and making the hundreds of decisions that typically go into such an event. Remember what’s important and why you’re planning a wedding – the love you share.

Mark C. Paquette Professional Event Planner

YES – YOU CAN CALL IT A WEDDING.  Many couples are concerned the word “wedding” is reserved for use by a male and female couple, but the word has no gender-specific rule about its use. You are welcome to call your event something else as well, like a civil union, commitment ceremony, etc. Regardless of the descriptor you choose, the professionals you work with should attempt to match your terminology. GO IN WITH A REALISTIC BUDGET.  The average 100-person wedding/civil union in Colorado will cost about $27,000. Define the aspects that are most important to you, allocate your budget properly, and determine which areas may be cut if necessary.

HIRE A PLANNER.  While many folks feel a planner is an additional expense, a planner can save you a lot of time, and money, by helping narrow down your choices and guiding decisions that are appropriate for your budget (which they usually allocate and manage for you). If you love the thought of planning the details yourself, at least hire a professional day-of coordinator for the big day. MAKE DECISIONS QUICKLY.  This isn’t to say you should sign a contract without thinking the terms through, but many times, couples over-interview or delay decision making thinking they’ll find “something better,” only to find their first choice was right, but already booked to another client. Mark C. Paquette is the founder of coloradogayweddings.com and the lead planner for Mark Christopher Weddings & Events, Inc. Mark holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration as well as wedding and event planning certificate.

KEEPING THE SPARK IN YOUR RELATIONSHIP

I

t’s easy for things to turn routine and for us to become lazy about investing in our relationships. Once life gets comfortable, we often relax and leave behind the gifts, the flirtations and the skin-tingling moments. It’s a trap. Here are five ways to keep the spark alive, build connection and foster intimacy.

Matthew LeBauer Licensed Clinical Social Worker

CREATE A STRONG RATIO OF POSITIVE TO NEGATIVE INTERACTIONS.  The more you bolster the safety and security of your connection (a fundamental human need), the stronger your partnership will be when a storm hits. By making sure you have many more positive emotional interactions with your partner — things as simple as winks and smiles count — you create an emotional reserve for when things get rough. ASK SPECIFIC QUESTIONS; SKIP “HOW WAS YOUR DAY?”  No one knows how to answer such ambiguous questions. Ask specific, open-ended questions: “What went well today?” “How did that conversation go with your boss?” Targeted questions are easier to answer and can lead to more connecting conversations. OFFER SUPPORT, NOT SOLUTIONS.  When your partner is struggling and you want to rescue her or him (“Why don’t you just tell her no?”), back off. Rescuing your partner weakens and

undermines them. Offer your support instead: “I’m here for you. How would you like me to support you?” TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF TO CARE FOR YOUR CONNECTION. A two-person relationship has three ingredients: two people, and the relationship they make. It’s important for each person to take care of her or his own self to be strong, genuine and present in the relationship. This means keeping up your own hobbies, exercise, interests and friends in addition to the shared experiences and friends you develop in your relationship. EMBRACE CONFLICTS, NOT ARGUMENTS.  Conflicts are predictable because we come from different histories and family cultures. When they meet, there’s conflict — and that’s not a bad thing. We can handle conflicts smoothly, slowly and respectfully to resolve them before they become arguments. Then we can use that experience to learn more about our partner and feel closer in re-connecting after the upset. Matthew LeBauer, LCSW provides counseling to individuals and couples looking for ways out of distressing patterns and into fulfilling lives. You can learn how he can help you get where you want to be by visiting lebauercounseling.com.

STEPS TO BECOMING FINANCIALLY FIT IMPROVE YOUR CREDIT SCORE

F

rom Dancing with the Stars to LGBT vacation hot-spots, there is a measurement and a ranking for everything. Your credit is no different. A credit score is a three-digit number representing an estimation of your ability to pay back loans. A good rating can save a lot of money over a lifetime, while a bad rating can mean thousands of extra dollars spent in interest payments. Whether your credit score is good or bad, here are five ways to improve it. PAY BILLS ON TIME.  It is only fashionable to be late to the party — not with your credit card, cell phone or car insurance bills. Payment history determines 35 percent of your credit score, so the simplest way to improve your score is to not miss or be late for payments. LOWER YOUR CREDIT UTILIZATION RATIO. When you see someone double-fisting it at the bar, you know what kind of state she or he will be in by midnight. Your bank has the same perception of you when you have a high credit card balance relative to your credit card limit, so get your credit card balance to less than 50 percent of your limit to improve your score. PRESERVE YOUR CREDIT HISTORY.  Don’t close credit card accounts like doors on an ex — even if they’re paid off — since longer credit histories tend to lead to higher credit scores. Use your card only once in a while and pay it off before your balance is due to let credit rating agencies know you haven’t closed your account. CORRECT YOUR CREDIT REPORT.   Nobody likes being the subject of false rumors floating around — make the same effort to correct the record about your financial history, especially as rates of credit card fraud increase. WHAT THE MOST COMMON DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHTS MEAN & WHY TO PAY ATTENTION By Jonathan McGrew Out Front Auto Columnist

F

or many of us a car is central to our daily routine, and unexpected car troubles can be huge disruption to the flow — not to mention a financial expense. When problems emerge, don’t panic, but don’t ignore them. Here are a few common lights that might appear on your car’s dashboard, what they mean, and how much a replacement part could cost. THE DREADED “CHECK ENGINE” LIGHT.  The good news is that the check engine light is often as simple as a gas cap that needs to be screwed on a little tighter. Other causes: faulty oxygen sensor ($200), malfunctioning mass airflow sensor ($375), misfiring spark plugs (up to $300) and broken catalytic converter (possibly more than $2,000). Why pay attention? These problems can reduce your fuel efficiency or eventually leave you stranded on the side of the road. THE “BRAKE!” AND “ABS” WARNING LIGHT.   These lights can be amber or red, but red lights mean business. The Brake and ABS light typically means a part of your brake system is failing — your break pads could be worn down too low or you’re losing your master cylinder. In any case, it’s about safety, so have it checked right away. THE “BATTERY” AND “CHARGE” WARNING LIGHT.   The battery light often means your battery is worn out ($50 to $100 to replace). It could also indicate that your alternator is getting weak (up to $500). The best thing to do is to stop by an auto parts store and asked them to test the battery and alternator — it’s free at most large chains! ENGINE OIL PRESSURE LIGHT.   When the engine oil pressure light comes on, first check if your oil is low. After the car is warmed up, park it on a level surface, pop the hood and check the oil dipstick. Remember to wipe it off first and then re-dip for an accurate reading to see if it’s below the low-oil mark. If you haven’t gotten an oil change recently, this might be a good time! Otherwise, it’s trip to the mechanic. LOW TIRE PRESSURE WARNING.  This light means at least one of your tires is low — it might not be visible from looking at the tires themselves. You will see this light come on more often in sudden cold snaps — add a little bit of air and the light should go off automatically. If it keeps coming on, have your tires checked for a slow leak or nail.

SUREFIRE WAYS TO HEAT UP YOUR SEX LIFE

ake the time to figure out what your wants and needs are, communicate and appreciate yourself — you’ll be sizzling in the sack in the most satisfying ways! Here are some tips on how to get the sex life you’ve always wanted.

don’t even know what it takes to get your motor revving? Enjoy a little ringing of southern bells, clicking of the five-fingered mouse, or whatever you like to call your time flying solo, and really figure out what it is that makes you tick.

THINK ABOUT WHAT IT IS THAT YOU ACTUALLY WANT AND NEED.  It’s easy to get caught up in social definitions of what it means to have good sex; lots of scream, clawing of each others’ backs, and of course, the often discussed (and often elusive) simultaneous orgasm. But take a moment to consider what you enjoy; maybe hours of oral sex or some sexy power play, or even watching porn with your lover. The first step towards fulfillment is being authentic to you.

BRING UP THE CONVERSATION WITH YOUR PARTNER(S).  It might not be the best conversation when you’re in the middle of getting it on, but prepare to communicate with your sexual partner about what you need to feel sexually fulfilled. Try the compliment sandwich; start with something they are doing incredibly well, suggest a change you’d like to see in your sex life, and finish up with how much they turn you on! ASK YOUR PARTNER FOR FEEDBACK. It takes two to tango, and that’s also true for the mattress mambo. In addition to sharing your sexual desires

GET TO KNOW YOUR BODY ON YOUR OWN.  How can you give your partner guidance between the sheets if you

with your lover, make sure you hear what your partner needs and wants. If you’re both working to meet each other’s sexual needs, everybody wins. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX (PUN INTENDED).  We live in a world of sexual tropes; if you work outside of these norms, you may find yourself enjoying many things you never would have even considered. Think about checking out a kinky play party, investing in some quality sex toys, becoming superior at sensual massage or trying out Tantra. Sex is more than inserting A into B: enjoy the entire spectrum of sexuality! Shanna Katz, M.Ed, ACS is a board certified sexologist and sex educator based here in Colorado. DISCOVERING LOCAL, LGBT-FRIENDLY CHURCHES AND SYNAGOGUES

C

hecking out a new church can be incredibly intimidating, especially for those who have tough former relationships with their gender and sexual identities in religious organizations they grew up in. Luckily, times have changed and more churches and spiritual groups are becoming open to the LGBTQ community. Check out these five LGBT-friendly Christian churches on the Front Range: HIGHLANDS CHURCH  •  2644 WEST 32ND AVE., DENVER.  The church’s website puts it best: “Highlands Church has roots in the evangelical tradition, but departs from general evangelical practice and theology by thoroughly welcoming the LGBTQ community as full members of the community and the church leadership.” Online at highlandschurchdenver.org.

TEMPLE EMANUEL  •  51 GRAPE ST., DENVER.  Temple Emanuel is a reform synagogue, located right in the heart of Denver. To request information on joining their inclusive space, contact Janet Bronitsky at 303-388-4013, ex. 303. Online at emanueldenver.org. FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH  •  1421 SPRUCE ST, BOULDER. You believe Senior Pastor Pat Bruns when he invites you to communion and states, seemingly solely for your ears, that “Everyone, absolutely everyone, is welcome.” They’re a church you’ll never miss at a local PRIDE event, with members that have been working for LGBTQ inclusion for 40+ years! Online at fumcboulder.org.

Live an active lifestyle soon.

FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH  •  20 EAST ST. VRAIN, COLORADO SPRINGS.  FCUCC is a church that welcomes and includes all genders and sexualities, along with worship services at many different times. They also hold civil unions within their sanctuary or chapel! Online at fcucc.org.

Achieve a longer healthier life in the future.

METROPOLITAN COMMUNITY CHURCH • 4223 S MASON ST., FORT COLLINS.  Metropolitan Community Church Family in Christ has been around for more than twenty years, a Christian denomination created in service for the LGBTQ community across the United States. They focus on their covenant values, including validating others and using non-abusive language. Online at mccfic.org.

Your west side LGBT connection Dr. Jon Paul Carmichael D.C. The Carmichael Chiropractic Lifestyle Center 3214-B S. Wadsworth Blvd. Lakewood, CO 80227 303-984-1700

Alison Wisneski is pursuing an MA in Social Change from the Iliff School of Theology. She focuses on relationship building and organizing those to rally around LGBTQ visibility and equality, currently within the United Methodist Church. When she’s not writing for class or on LGBTQ issues, she enjoys spending time with her musician wife and their cat and dog.
