nsformation LEFT HAND LASER'S GIFT OF COMPASSION

A

s an independent business owner and mother of five, Armene Piper has a long list of to-dos constantly ticking like a time bomb in her mind. What day of the week is it? Which child has what obligation? When is my next appointment? Often, it is a feat to simply stay afloat. But, even with all of her stress, Piper finds the time to give back. Piper is in a unique industry—one of erasure. She is an electrologist: a trained professional skilled in the science of hair removal. The owner of Left Hand Laser Studio in Longmont, she not only made connections with those who want to remove unwanted bikini lines, she just as successfully found a home within the LGBTQ community. “When I started my business two years ago, the LGBTQ community was not even on my radar,” Piper admitted. “Not on purpose, I was just trying to get my bearings and figure out what I was doing.” Standing in her Longmont office, inside a building filled with insurance agencies and dental practitioners, the single room feels as clean and organized as it does warm and inviting. Industrial decor skirts the edge of steampunk, and shelves are lined with certifications and certificates of recognition from organizations such as Out Boulder, with whom she does a lot of community work. Her casual, calm demeanor is disarming, and it is clear that her connection to her craft is integrally centered around her ability to connect with people. “I feel like you meet the right people at the right time,” Piper

said. “There is a purpose for everything we go through.” Indeed, this holds true for Piper. On a day like any other a few years back, she was busy and rushed, wandering the aisles of Target as her gaze swept across a woman whom she vaguely recognized. Piper began to secretly follow this woman throughout the store, unable to recall how she knew her. Eventually, the two spoke, and the familiar woman introduced herself as Penny, saying that she knew Piper from years before. In a moment everything clicked. This was a former friend, a person who Piper had a falling out with almost a decade ago. Yet this was definitely not the same person she had known. Penny was mid-transition. The two sat and talked over coffee, getting caught up over the previous 10 years, and Penny shared her story. Unfortunately, it is one all too familiar within the transgender community: a story of lost relationships with friends and family members. Penny had been forced into a minimum wage job with no benefits and wasn’t sure how she would be able to get ahead again. The process of transitioning can leave so many feeling like their lives have become an unending cycle of loss and pain, like a wheel spinning out of control. While the exact number of people within the transgender community is difficult to know because of lack of census data, a 2016 report released by the Williams Institute estimated 0.6 percent of U.S. adults and 0.53 percent of Colorado adults identify as transgender. OUTFRONTMAGAZINE.COM

// 7

As the government continues to lag behind in this regard, transgender people continually face disproportionately institutionalized prejudice and discrimination within the healthcare system. If a person is fortunate enough to obtain and retain health insurance coverage during the process of transition, the majority of plans consider things like electrolysis to be an elective and cosmetic procedure. Therefore, covering these costs become the burden of the patient. “I can tell you from my experience, every male to female trans person that is actively transitioning does some hair removal, unless they can't afford it,” said Julia Condolora, vice president of the Board of Directors for the Gender Identity Center in Denver. Treatments for electrolysis on average can cost $100 per session, and depending on the individual, one person can need upwards of 25 procedures to remove all unwanted hair in a specific area. When combining that cost with the overall expense of MTF transition with hormone therapy, the bill can range between $7,000 and $20,000. Often, this can be dangerous for transgender women as well as prevent them from being fully self-actualized. “For those of us that are hairy, it's a nightmare,” Condolora said. “It's one of the things that can out you no matter how well you've done everything else. It's your face; it's something everyone looks at.” Penny admitted that day to Piper, that one of the hardest parts of her transition was experiencing issues of gender dysphoria, the distress a person experiences when the gender they were assigned at birth does not match the person’s gender identity. Those feelings continued because of a beard and chest hair that she had to shave every day. In that instant, things became clear for Piper when she realized she could contribute to the LGBTQ community in a big way. After some consideration, she decided to offer her transgender clients a major discount on their hair removal services, 50 percent off, in fact. The day that Left Hand Laser Studio opened its doors was the day the discount started. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Piper has given $27,000 in discounts to her transgender clients in 2018 alone. Emma Vale is one of the dozens of transgender clients that Piper has serviced since her first 8 \\ O C T O B E R 1 7 , 2 0 1 8

day in business in 2016. She is currently going through the hair removal process on her face and has had five procedures done. “I live in North Denver, and I drive all the way to Longmont,” Vale said. “It’s worth the drive; she’s amazing.” Vale found Piper on a Colorado trans Facebook discussion board, one of several places that lists Left Hand Laser Studio as the place to go for people in the transgender community. For many trans women like Vale, permanent hair removal offers relief from the dysphoria they feel within their bodies “We’re lucky in the front range to have someone like that; I wish more trans women knew about her. Not only is there a discount, but this is someone that cares about us and is not going to be weird,” Vale said. Denver Health, the Colorado hospital known for recently introducing vaginoplasty, offers the most comprehensive transgender health care procedures in the state. They have performed one gender confirmation surgery per week since May. A spokesperson for Denver Health confirmed in a statement that hair removal is a mandatory requirement prior to any maleto-female transition surgery. “I have a lot of anxiety about that, getting a brazilian” admitted Vale. “It’s not everyone’s favorite thing, but being a trans person with a really different kind of body... I haven’t started that yet, but I know when I do, I’m going to go to Armene.” Not only does Vale say that Piper treats her with kindness and respect, but through the time they spend together during her procedures, she has come to consider her a friend, and Piper agrees. Sharing story after story of client relationship turned into friendship, those connections bring her more than she could have imagined. “I thought I was going to be the one changing all these lives, when truly the life that was changed was my own,” Piper admitted. “I’ve met some of the most incredible people.” While opening and operating a new business is stressful with massive overhead costs and tight budgets, Piper has no reservations in continuing her discount long-term and is committed to providing compassionate care to the LGBTQ community. “I truly believe that whatever you give comes back to you tenfold. If your heart is in the right place, then everything will work out as it should.”

The Insider’s Guide TO ONLINE HOLIDAY SHOPPING

I

f you’re one of those crack-of-dawn, post-Thanksgiving shoppers who likes fighting for parking spaces, standing in long lines, and engaging in arm-to-arm combat over the one $50 TV left, then this article isn’t for you. Go. Enjoy! For the rest of you, sit back, grab your computer (or your phone), and get ready to take advantage of history-making holiday online deals that are likely to include better shipping and more phone-friendly options. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are the biggest shopping days of the year. Last year saw an 18 percent jump in online 1 0 \\ O C T O B E R 1 7 , 2 0 1 8

sales from the year before, and this year is expected to be even bigger. Forbes found nearly half of all 2017 online shoppers took advantage of the big warehouse companies like Amazon because of their great shipping deals. That’s why smaller retailers are expected to roll out cheaper and faster shipping. Mobile sales were strong throughout the entire shopping season, with smartphones accounting for around half of all transactions on Christmas and Thanksgiving Days, according to e-commerce platform and technology provider Salesforce Inc. Commerce Cloud. That’s likely to translate into more phone-friendly sales options this year.

Monday is one of the best days to scoop up incredible travel deals. You can buy a vacation gift or take advantage of deeply discounted hotel rooms for an after-holiday long weekend.

Pick Your Dates Now Now is the time to start shopping for toys. They tend to get more expensive as the holidays get closer. Also, check Amazon for daily lightning deals–items that are on sale for only a few hours until they sell out. If you’re in the right place at the right time, you can find some blockbuster deals. Last year, they offered $100 cashmere sweaters for $20, but the sale was over within a couple hours. In the weeks leading up to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, expect big deals on off-brand electronics. But beware: around this time, stores often start offering early-bird specials that are little more than their regular weekly specials labeled as pre-holiday deals. As a rule of thumb, the consumer shopping guide Real Simple recommends only buying gifts that are at least 20 percent off and that you were going to buy anyway. Another pro tip: when websites advertise sales over the weekend, wait until the following Monday to buy. By then competitors often match prices or even start a price war.

Early November – Early December While Black Friday is the biggest shopping day in brick-andmortar stores, Cyber Monday usually has the best online deals. Note: this is not the case for general-interest sites, like Amazon or Walmart, that also offer huge Black Friday deals. Expect good deals on just about everything.

Pick Your Sites We won’t know the sites with the very best deals until Black Friday actually gets here. But, based on last year, and in anticipation of this year, you’ll want to keep an eye on big retail outlets like Amazon, Walmart, and Overstock. Cash back sites like Kohl’s are almost always sure to save you money. TechBargains.com has some of the best electronic deals (but check them against Best Buy). For upscale purchases, Nordstrom is known for its blow-out holiday deals online. For handmade, original items, you can’t beat Etsy.

Pick Your Items No sale is a good sale if it gets you to buy items you’ll never use. By making a list of the people you’re buying for and items they may like, you’ll be able to zero in on the best deals by shopping around. You’ll also know what to look for during those limited-time, lightning deals that more and more companies are offering. In November expect the best deals to be on electronics, TVs, gaming systems, and smart gadgets. Also, don’t forget about the best gifts of all–experiences. Cyber

Cyber Monday is when you’ll likely find the biggest and best deals online. Look for sitewide specials like 30 or 40 percent off entire inventories. Last season, Urban Outfitters' online shop knocked 40 percent off all its outerwear (and who in Colorado doesn’t love outerwear?); Banana Republic's website took 15 percent off all purchases, and sitewide discounts were offered at Old Navy, Lord & Taylor, and Barneys New York.

December 21 – December 24 Right before Christmas is the best time to buy big-ticket items like TVs, furniture, and fine jewelry. As the big day approaches, these items are likely to get even cheaper. Keep in mind, selection also drops, and once a good deal is gone, you’ve missed it. So, if it’s something you really want, and it’s a good price, go ahead and pull the trigger. Also remember those last minute deals often include higher overnight or two-day shipping costs.

After Holiday Sales Sad but true, the very best holiday deals come after the holidays. Decorations are up to 80 percent off on December 26, and some of the best deals of the year can be found mid-January when there’s leftover inventory from after holiday sales. This is a great time to get a jump on next year’s shopping. OUTFRONTMAGAZINE.COM

Dixie Elixirs Watermelon Dewdrops

Dixie Elixirs Birthday Cake Bar

As a fan of all things watermelon flavored, Dixie Elixirs Watermelon Dewdrops did not disappoint—not only in taste but in results. After taking two dropperfuls (6mg THC) and holding them under my tongue for 60 seconds, the refreshing taste of artificial watermelon made love to my taste buds. Not long after, I was relaxed enough to finish my Halloween shopping. Two doses when I got home, and I was ready to Netflix & Chill.

Don’t let this chocolate only be enjoyed on your birthday; it’s too good to just be an annual thing. A classic vanilla-chocolate bar littered with rainbow sprinkles, filled with 100mg or 200mg of THC, and wrapped in a beautiful pink box, this edible is as queer as they come. Enjoy all the benefits of funfetti birthday cake without your loved ones squawking “Happy Birthday” at you.

Dixie Elixirs SYNERGY Soak Who doesn’t like a little cannabis in the bathtub? This is taking things beyond a joint and a soak or some edibles before stepping into a bubble bath. While the soak contains both THC and CBD, it doesn’t really get you high, at least not in the traditional sense of eating, smoking, or vaping THC. Instead, your entire body just feels relaxed. This is an amazing self-love gift, or the perfect thing for someone who is on their feet all day.

Dixie Elixirs SYNERGY Balm This balm is the perfect thing to soothe your aches and pains. Just like the soak, it won’t really get you high, but it will make your body feel nice and relaxed. Apply it specifically to a trouble area, or use it like lotion before bed to help relax and ease any tension that develops during the day. You can’t go wrong!

Wana Disposable Vape: Indica Kush Wana isn’t the company you think of when it comes to vape pens, since they’re known for their Wana Cap edibles. But this brand new, disposable vape pen will be a welcome addition to their product offering. It’s cute, portable, and packs the perfect amount of punch, a great present for someone visiting and looking to see the sights. The only downside? It’s so cute you’ll wish it was refillable and reusable.

Stratos Relax 1:1 CBD/ THC Tincture

Stratos Soothe 1:1 Salve Stratos Soothe, a topical ointment that combines 100 milligrams of THC and 100 milligrams of CBD, six essential oils, and a plant-based compound to help with absorption, is a gift from the cannabis gods. Not only is it easy to apply, but it works quickly and effectively to soothe irritation and help the body heal. It’s also gluten, nut, and paraben free, and it smells great. This would be the perfect gift for a loved one who struggles with skin irritation. Trust both me and my psoriasis when we say that Soothe is a must have.

“Relax 1:1 is a phospholipid emulsion 1:1 tincture made with whole plant CBD and hybrid THC.” What do all those fancy words mean? We’re not sure; we’re too relaxed. The calming combination of CBD and THC in this tincture is just the thing if you have anxiety, pain, or both. The THC seems to be derived from some seriously chill strains that leave you feeling mellowed out, while the CBD makes your body feel light, relieves tension, and eases pain. The perfect gift for anyone looking for something a bit more medicinal.

Dixie Elixirs Straight Up Dark Chocolate You can’t really go wrong with classic dark chocolate. This bar lends itself well to being an infused product, since dark chocolate masks the taste of cannabis and is also enjoyed in moderation because of its strong flavor. Plus, it’s just classy, and Dixie Elixirs does a really good job with the balanced flavor and clean high. This is an awesome way to elevate the gift of chocolate, pun intended. It’s also a nice way to treat yourself after a long day of entertaining relatives or checking boxes on your shopping list.

Pressies (cannabis pills) Pressies are a series of wellness supplements that contain effective, targeted nutraceuticals PLUS a healthy dose of THC (cannabis oil) to help you do the things you've gotta do. With products that help with sleep, energy, or focus, these pills will help you control your actions. As winter comes, they are useful for anyone to have in their medicine cabinet.

High Level Health Hat The perfect present for the cannabis enthusiast who wants to look fresh, this High Level Health hat is expertly sewn with the company’s logo. The flat-brim hat lover in your life will definitely appreciate this, especially if they are a fan of the beloved, local dispensary. This is a great gift for someone who wants a memento of the Mile High City... that won’t get their suitcase searched at the airport.

High Level Health Live Resin Concentrates are always a crowd-pleaser. But combining this live resin with a party, lots of queers, and costumes was perfect. Throughout the night, the concentrate and dab rig was visited often. It was such a hit that someone pocketed the product before the end of the night, but we’ll be replenishing our stash soon.

Pure Green Reusable Vape Pens: Indica, Sativa, and Hybrid The tried-and-true vape pen with the circular, screw-off cartridge has been around since the dawn of legal industry, and for good reason. You can’t really go wrong with such a simple design, and with the exception of a few brands, it’s the go-to style for vaping. Pure Green’s cartridges didn’t let us down; they hit hard and the oil tastes clean and still has a nice, leafy flavor to it. One of the batteries did die on us shortly after opening the package, but with duds like that, companies are normally happy to provide a free replacement to paying customers.

MJ Arsenal Mini Rig Dab rigs are awesome, but they can be a pain as well. All those little parts get broken so easily, and then you’re out of a pipe. MJ Arsenal solves that problem with a super clean and streamlined design that minimizes the use of little, moving parts, even though the rig itself is compact. And it still packs a mean punch! Grab this for the 710 lover in your life.

Beboe Wakeful Cannabis Pastilles Edibles can be a little heavy for those who don’t partake often, and Beboe’s pastilles are the perfect thing when your aunt’s in town and swears up and down she wants to get high. Not only will their classy look impress your aunt, but they are only five milligrams each, so it’s easy to take a low dose. They also taste great. Plus, the special, wakeful blend will keep you from getting drowsy, just in case your aunt realizes she has more cheap holiday ties to buy.

Beboe Downtime Vape Pen The perfect foil to the “wakeful” vape, “downtime” is the indica that balances you out after a long day on your feet or a long night at the club. Just like their other pen, it’s a simple, straightforward, disposable vape that is great for the end of the day. Again, it would be nice if there was a reusable version of a pen this cute, but it’s still fun while it lasts.

2 0 \\ O C T O B E R 1 7 , 2 0 1 8

Beboe Wakeful Vape Pen Need something cute, discreet, and on-the-go Beboe has you covered with their adorable, portable, line of vape pens. “Wakeful” is their cute and catchy phrasing for sativa, and as promised, the pen gives you a pick-me-up and is great for getting work done or a night out. The only downside? It’s so cute and intricate that it seems a shame it is a disposable pen. Still, it’s perfect for someone who is just visiting.

1906 Midnight Chocolate One really common use for edibles is to help with sleep, since they offer such a relaxing effect. But not everyone realizes that finding the correct blend of edible is key for using them medicinally. Some edibles are made with sativa strains, which are actually more energizing and can have the opposite effect if you are trying to relax or sleep. Midnight by 1906 is just the ticket if you need to get drowsy. The blend of CBD and THC works wonders to help both your body and mind get in the zone.

1906 Go Chocolate Who said cannabis is for slowing down? If you need to keep your hustle up, these chocolates are for you. While infused chocolate is usually associated with keeping it sexy or staying in and relaxing, 1906 once again prove with this chocolate that the right blend of strains and terpenes into a flavorful concoction can work wonders. This is a good gift for someone who stays on the go or visiting relatives and friends who want to see and do it all.

1906 High Love Chocolate What do you get when you incorporate the sex-enhancing properties of weed with chocolate? The perfect aphrodisiac. High Love chocolates combine a microdose (five milligrams of THC per gem and bean) of cannabis with natural, passion-inducing botanical ingredients from around the world, including muira, puama, and damiana. It truly works, and all of our lovers thank 1906.

1906 Pause Chocolate I didn’t expect much from the Pause Chocolate, as most edibles offer relaxation but rarely deliver. But to my suprise, about an hour after having the chocolates with some milk, my body felt weightless while my mind was filled with energy. So, I did some light redecorating around the house and made some biscuits and gravy.

1906 Bliss Peanut Butter Cups Nothing beats a peanut butter cup as far as flavor goes, and you can’t go wrong with this tasty treat from 1906. As the name implies, the blend in this candy will make you feel happy and at peace, and the taste is just divine. Get these chocolates for someone you care about or treat yourself. 2 2 \\ O C T O B E R 1 7 , 2 0 1 8

SMART HOUSE By Ryan Howe

2018 QUEER TECH GIFT GUIDE

I

n the fifth episode of the second season of Netflix’s reboot of Queer Eye, “Sky’s The Limit,” the Fab Five set their eyes on transforming the life of transgender man Skyler Jay. They help him redecorate his home, his closet, his facial hair, and his confidence. They even introduced him to his idol, Todrick Hall. But while the Fab Five paraded through his life, one of the most polarizing parts of the episode was how they treated his home decor. When they first meet Skylar in his home, he is surrounded by queer people and queer imagery—a rainbow flag hangs proudly in the middle of the wall with glittery letters spelling “LOVE” overtop a protest sign that sits on the floor reading “EQUAL LOVE EQUAL RIGHTS.” A black-and-white painting of a queer person holding a wig is proudly thumbtacked to the wall, and condoms lay under the glass coffee table. “Skylar’s house screams, ‘Queer, queer, queer, queer, queer!'" Karamo said in a confessional. “I mean, it reminds me of somebody who is in their early 20s, and everything is about being a part of the queer community.” At the end of the episode, the Fab Five present Skylar his new home and how they updated his queer decor. Skylar is happy. The Fab Five are happy. The viewers are happy. It’s an inspiring message of updating with the times but staying true to your queer lifestyle, because for some of us being a part of the queer community is everything. In the digital age that we live in, I decided to update my own home with tech that accentuates how queer both my roommate and I are. 2 4 \\ O C T O B E R 1 7 , 2 0 1 8

Ultimate Ears Wonderboom As soon as the UE Wonderboom entered our house, our neighbors immediately began hating us. Yes, it’s really that loud. And portable. It can trek across my home with me, going virtually anywhere—even the shower. The wonderboom is one of the best Bluetooth speakers you can buy. It’s completely waterproof, offers true 360-degree sound, features a 100-foot range, and can pair two devices simultaneously. This $99 diminutive speaker is smaller than the Roll 2 yet pumps out much more bass than its sibling. The Wonderboom is still IPX7-rated, which means you can submerge the speaker in up to a meter of water for up to 30 minutes. It also conveniently floats. The Wonderboom is small, adorable, and loud. Coming in multiple skins, the soda can-shaped speaker projects sounds from every side, allowing everyone the same listening experience no matter where they are. This little speaker is perfect for small gatherings, or pregaming, or showering, or just pissing off your neighbor who keeps taking your laundry out of the shared washer.

Philips Hue Lights

But, let’s start with the basics.

I despise ceiling lights, a lot. They drain the room of all its life and vibrancy. Their light is harsh and unflattering. So, I fill my home with lamps. Mostly basic, plain lamps that don’t distract from my colorful furniture.

The original Philips Hue package is designed to replace a traditional A19 bulb and can change to more than 16 million colors. The starter pack includes three lights plus a Hue bridge (which you’ll need to control any Hue lights). Philips also sells a version of this kit with four lights for $199.

I also love party lights. Every house or apartment I’ve claimed as a home has seen its share of gimmick lights. Then, I discovered Philips Hue. It’s honestly my favorite part of my house. Connecting to a bridge that lives on your wi-fi network, you can control the color and brightness of the Hue lights. With what seems like an endless number of apps that work with the lights, the possible color matches are honestly endless.

You can expand your lighting options through a number of different Philips Hue bulbs. This includes everything from plain white bulbs to multicolored lightstrips and other bulbs that fit smaller sockets. Just remember, you'll have to connect them to your bridge first. These lights work for every part of my life—movies, cleaning, reading, dancing, and sleeping.

FujiFilm Instax Wide This might not be new, or technologically advanced, but it’s a must-have in any home. The Instax Wide takes you back to good days of Polaroid Cameras—delivering phenomenal instant photos straight from the camera. It’s been on the market for years, and the price has barely dropped, costing you around $90 for the camera itself (depending on where you buy from) and roughly $1 a photo. But damn is it worth it. For example, I bought 40 photos for my Halloween party. I made a point to take a photo of every, single person who came in costume. I had planned to make a very dark, very scary shrine to my loved ones on Halloween day. But most people snuck their photos out of the house, and I was forced to make voodoo dolls of them. As queer people, a lot of the Polaroid photos of us were taken when we were very closeted or living a completely different life. We want new ones to fill our walls, photo books, and lives. The FujiFilm Instax Wide gives us a new way to do that.

From Basic to

Boutique: HOLIDAY RETAIL AND GIFT GUIDE 2018

G

iving the perfect gift to someone and seeing their reaction is a priceless and pleasurable feeling; the same cannot always be said for actually searching for and identifying said gift. Thankfully, Denver is packed with fun shops that might just hold the perfect item for each person on your list. While the stores and sights of Denver are too abundant to name in full, start with these spots for clothing, homegoods, gifts, odd and ends, and one-of-a-kind items with local flair.

Queen City General Store 220 E. 13th Ave. Denver, CO 80203

What you’ll find: An array of items ranging from new and vintage clothing to home decor, essentials, plants, gifts, and more They call it the “general store” for a reason. Queen City in Cap Hill sells clothing, homegoods from bath towels and 3 2 \\ O C T O B E R 1 7 , 2 0 1 8

soaps to teas and cocktail kits, a hefty stock of beauty products, and more. Soaking in the hip atmosphere is an experience in itself while you browse. This season, expect to find a new crop of fall clothing along with speciality gifts like Santa Fe Stoneworks’ gorgeous turquoise pocket knives or the funky, handmade bags from Susan Alexandra. Maybe you’ll end up sneaking in something for yourself, too.

Browse the store’s large selection for the perfect, new pair of Doc Martens and alternative winter attire, or snag a lower-priced stocking stuffer, like an arm band or beanie, for the punk rocker you know and love.

FashioNation and Baby Sitter’s Nightmare

What you’ll find: Artist- and designerdriven clothing, accessories, and jewelry

1594 S. Broadway Denver, CO 80210

What you’ll find: Shoes, clothing, and accessories of the punk rock variety Studded belt? Check. Funky dress? Oh yeah. Edgy infant onesies? It’s all here! This iconic punk shop started in 1987 with 40 pieces of clothing and has since evolved to serve the punk community of Denver with a plethora of apparel options to spruce up their wardrobes.

Fancy Tiger Clothing 55 Broadway Denver, CO 80203

Stray away from the regular and check out some of the small, independent lines and designs that Fancy Tiger has to offer. With clothes for friends and fam of any gender, also expect to find a variety of lifestyle products and welcome surprises, including Fancy Tiger Crafts next door, which offers sustainable and made-by-hand arts and crafting supplies and a cozy atmosphere. Stop by and support artists; along the way, you’ll probably walk out with something cool.

Talulah Jones 1122 E. 17th Ave. Denver, CO 80218

What you’ll find: Unique children’s toys and items, essentials and specialty gifts for home, bath, and self If you’re buying for grandma this year, your partner, or even a niece or nephew, Talulah Jones is bursting with an eclectic inventory that can help cross multiple names off your shopping list. Ranging from toys and clothes for the young people in your life to fun home decor and luxurious bath and body goods, Talulah Jones carries a number of in-state brands, along with brands outof-state and overseas you won’t happen upon often. Stopping here is also a safe bet if you’re looking for an ornament or unique holiday item.

Buffalo Exchange 51 S. Broadway Denver, CO 80203 226 E. 13th Ave. Denver, CO 80203 1813 Pearl St. Boulder, CO 80302 What you’ll find: New and used clothing, shoes, and accessories It’s a classic name that gives new life to old stuff, with two locations in the city and vast potential to find that perfect diamond in the rough with every visit. If you’re looking for a special piece that won’t put you over-budget Buffalo Exchange is a flexible option that regularly takes in pre-owned items, and the Broadway location might even take in your unwanted clothes for cash or credit. If the Denver shops don’t have what you need, pop on over to the Boulder location and see what a neighboring city might have to offer.

For the Old Soul: Step into the past and stop into one of Denver’s many local, vintage shops this season for a special, throwback gift. Get your Audrey Hepburn on with a throwback hat, maybe you need a oneof-a-kind ugly sweater or classic winter coat, or just peruse the racks for some fresh denim. Most of these vintage stores also carry costumes, miscellaneous

trinkets, and even some modern clothing, and employees are generally very knowledgeable in navigating the decades. Perfect for newbies or anyone looking for something specific. Boss Vintage 10 S. Broadway Denver, CO 80209 Goldmine Vintage 227 N. Broadway #102 Denver, CO 80203 Regal Vintage 1866 S. Broadway Denver, CO 80210 The Antique Broker 1438 S. For the Mystic in Your Life: Over the last few years, many people have taken an interest to paganism and wicca, embracing spirituality and nature in the modern era. Before you give your cash to Sephora for their new witch kit, stop by and support one or two of Denver’s many metaphysical stores, instead. While these shops range in size and selection, expect to find an offering of books, jewelry, herbs, oils, crystals, incense, and more gifts and supplies. For those utterly convinced, or even just curious, popping in at one of these spiritual spots may surprise you this gift-giving season. Herbs & Arts 2015 E. Colfax Ave. Denver, Co 80206 Spiritways 3301 E. Colfax Ave. Denver, CO 80206 Ritualcravt 2842 W. 44th Ave. Denver, CO 80211

For Heaven’s Sake New Age Metaphysical Books and Gifts 4900 W. 46th Ave. Denver, CO 80212 Quantum Alchemy 913 Corona St. Denver, CO 80218

For the Music Lover: For the vinyl lover or the avid collector, a favorite record can be a simple and foolproof gift. Luckily, Denver has a handful of used CD and record stores jampacked with classics and current faves perfect for the music enthusiast in your life. Most of these spots also offer a used selection, trading, and additional sections to find miscellaneous gifts. If you know a music lover but can’t nail down the right LP, maybe a gift card is the way to go. Bowman’s Vinyl and Lounge 1312 S. Broadway Denver, CO 80210 Angelo’s CD’s & More 1959 S. Broadway Denver, CO 80210 937 E. Colfax Ave. Denver, CO 80218 Wax Trax Records 638 E. 13th Ave. Denver, CO 80203 Twist & Shout Records 2508 E. Colfax Ave. Denver, CO 80206 Recollect Records 1255 Delaware St. Denver, CO 80204

When You Need to Get Thrifty: Dig in, everyone! You know what they say about one man’s trash. While a thrift store may not be your go-to spot when it’s time to shop for the holidays, you might be surprised what you find after stepping into one. Think: the perfect, odd piece to accent your buddy’s living room wall, or the most-talked-about gift at the upcoming White Elephant party. If you are in the need of that special something but you aren’t quite sure what that is, you know where to go. OUTFRONTMAGAZINE.COM

HEINZESIGHT: Looking Good VS.Being Good

A

lmost all of us struggle with how we feel about ourselves. It doesn’t matter if our experiences are about feeling chubby, skinny, awkward, dorky, short, socially unskilled, or weird. We may have grown up feeling insecure, but many of these perceptions follow us into our adulthood. Hopefully, we have taken opportunities to explore how those feelings can have a negative effect on our self-esteem and worked to heal from these experiences. If we can work through these, we can develop inner strength and be grateful that we lived through these difficult times to become stable, successful, and happy people. Unfortunately, some of us have not taken the effort to work on our inner challenges and instead spend the energy and time to create an outward appearance of confidence. Often these people still struggle internally with all the issues that caused them to feel terrible about themselves in the first place and continue to experience trauma as life goes on. There are many who choose to cover their unhappiness, depression, or suicidal intent by building a better looking outside. Regrettably, very few around them would ever suspect that they are miserable or considering ending their own life. This private hell is due to their own choices to create an image of stability and strength so that people around them have little idea about how sad and desperate they are inside. 3 6 \\ O C T O B E R 1 7 , 2 0 1 8

Their feelings of isolation are an unfortunate product of their own creation. Because they don’t feel comfortable reaching out for help or admitting that they want support, no assistance is offered to them, and they are often left alone to be tortured in their own minds and hearts. Sadly, many of them never get what they want or need from people who care about them. Mirrors don’t lie. When we look at our reflection, the truth usually stares back at us. Regardless if we attempt to cover up our inadequacies by building an impressive outward appearance or telling others that we are living an awesome life, we are painfully aware that our happiness is somewhat of a façade. The truth is that inside, we may still be living the life of that tortured, sad little kid. This inner child who continues to exist in most of us often dictates how we engage with our surrounding world. If this kid is unhappy, we are prone to experience frustration, anger, and a slew of other emotions that disrupt our enjoyment of life. Even if our inner child has been hurt in the past, helping them to heal can produce comforting inner strength, confidence, and healthy ways of interacting with people and situations. Our society often supports the idea that if you look stable and successful then that image most often matches how you feel internally. The flip-side is that often people who look or act like they are hurting or ask for help can get attention from others to aid them in

getting through rough spots. At the very least, they may get a supportive hug or gain some assistance to address what is currently challenging them. As people create a type of strong-looking avatar, they may get praise for seeming confident, attractive, or successful. Some may consider them worthy of praise or envy. The unfortunate reality is that they are secretly living their life in anguish. Putting out this false, constructed image usually causes devastation in someone’s life. It may turn into the only way they can function or survive their daily interactions with others. We all have a desire to be liked by others, and most of us fear rejection and judgement from those around us. We search for acceptance from attractive, powerful, or dynamic people while working to fit into whatever social circle we find desirable. Some of these cliques seem to require a rocking body or fancy lifestyle to be accepted. Most often, confidence and being socially engaging can make you significantly more attractive to people. It’s better to actually feel confident, but many times acting as if you are feeling strong can get you through uncomfortable situations. Over time and with consistent practice, you will hopefully feel more comfortable with those elements that caused your insecurity in the past. It takes work to overcome things that trouble you. We all search for groups that accept and appreciate us. In the best situations, people would enjoy our company, sense of humor, and quirks.

We may also strongly fear being rejected from these people. There are times when it is hard to admit that we are emotionally fragile and can be deeply hurt when feelings of insecurity are brought up. They can come out of the blue, and bad feelings don’t have to be brought on by a huge conflict. A passing comment can cause an emotional meltdown that can end with a dramatic exit from an event or retreating to feel miserable alone. Some people feel incredibly insecure about who they are, lack of achievements, love handles, a bad haircut, or how they deal with life challenges. There are so many aspects about ourselves that we may not like. For many of us, it is significantly easier to identify faults in ourselves before we feel comfortable discussing our strengths. We can all aspire to be the strong, independent, and charismatic person that people are drawn to, but may struggle with the best ways to achieve this. The main trick is to develop confidence without burying the past. You can’t forget the hardships we went through that caused us to adapt and accept our limitations at that time. It may still hurt us when we think about these, but they are part of our history and cannot be erased. We might have been raised feeling awkward, weak, scared, ignored, beat down, mocked, or generally unhappy. People may go to the gym to change their body types, while others may work to overcome feelings of inadequacy from growing up in challenging situations. As we mature, some focus on activities to ensure that these terrible experiences are not replicated in our adult lives. We may also struggle with determining our strengths and what could make us attractive to others. Most of us have difficulty finding beauty and confidence in ourselves. Hopefully we have achieved a balance between physical attractiveness combined with a kind heart, warm smile, and a stunning personality. There is also nothing wrong with wanting to attract those same types of people into our lives. Concerns develop when the important qualities of perceiving ourselves or others as sexy focuses more on muscles and a chiseled jawline than on being a good person. We risk putting more importance on appearance than what lies underneath the surface.

Cultural phenomenons such as Facebook and Instagram can encourage some people to create an online image. Pictures of great bodies and laughter with friends show the sides of people’s lives that they want to share. Don’t be fooled, because this is not anyone’s real life. It is only snapshots that do not show everything. There are many other aspects of living that are not shown in these arenas. Other people’s perception of these people living a charmed life rarely match what is going on in reality. Some compare their own lives to these people and end up feeling more depressed and unhappy with their own situations. We can develop tools to deal with past issues that have caused pain and insecurity instead of working to convince ourselves and others around us that everything is just peachy and nothing negative affects us. It’s time to get out the hammer, chisel, and trash bag to start breaking apart this fake image of strength and start building yourself back up from the inside out. Don’t forget about the struggles we have endured. They prove to us that we can live through rough times and still have the ability to thrive in our lives. Claiming that painful feelings don’t exist doesn’t make them hurt any less. It is ultimately more important to strengthen our souls and heal from past hurt than to deny that we ever struggled. This admission can help us become more honest and authentic with ourselves and others around us while giving us better opportunities for stability, happiness, and success in our lives. In a world of style over substance, it is easy to fall into these patterns. Putting on pretty wrapping paper to cover up a box of crap does not make a worthwhile present. We can work on accepting ourselves for where we are today. It may not be the perfect vision of what we want, but it can be good enough for now, and we can continue to work on ourselves to make our lives better. Don’t waste energy creating a new persona or beating yourself up unnecessarily over those things that cause you to feel badly about yourself. Work on creating the best true you, not just a costume to cover yourself up. OUTFRONTMAGAZINE.COM
