The bucket hat has its origins on Irish farms and fishing boats from the early 1900s. Early 20th century farmers and fishermen wore them because the wide, downward-slanting brim served as protection against the rain.

It was not until the 1960s and the height of the Mod movement that the bucket hat transformed from a functional piece to a fashionable one. This is around the time the hats started being made with cotton, tweed, and felt materials.

Bucket hats really started to gain momentum in the late ‘80s and ‘90s through the hip-hop community with many rappers wearing them on album covers and in music videos.

Bucket hats did not become mainstream until very recently. The bucket hat made its debut for high fashion brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Lanvin, and Valentino in the spring and summer of 2018.

Now in 2021, they have become a trend that is here to stay. Many people are turning to bucket hats in an attempt to recreate the fashion of the ‘90s and Y2K. With many variations of design, color, pattern, and material, there is a bucket hat to fit any style.

Beginners to bucket hat styling should consider starting with a single-colored bucket hat. Another option is a plain hat with an icon or graphic printed on it. These pieces are a great starting point and are easy to pair with most outfits. Try pairing a graphic tee with a bucket hat of the same color.
