As we jump into the new year, we are all wishing for healthier habits, new routines, and ways to improve ourselves. One of the biggest setbacks to a New Year’s resolution is negative self-talk. The best way to overcome the gloom of “I cannot” is to fight back with the even stronger “I can” through the art of affirmation. Here are some tips to make your affirmations stick in 2022.

HOW TO CHOOSE AFFIRMATIONS THAT RESONATE:

Affirmations are positive statements that encourage mindful thinking, but choosing the right ones can be tricky. STEP 1: Consider these questions: Which negative thoughts impact my life? What am I seeking to improve about myself and my relationships? Flip a negative to a positive. STEP 2: Keep it short and sweet! Create a simple statement that is easy to remember.

STEP 3: Start affirmations with “I” or “my” and keep them in the present tense.“I am proud of myself” is much more encouraging than, “Soon, I will be proud of myself.” MEDITATION:

STEP 1: Sit or rest comfortably, gain knowledge of your surroundings, and focus on breathing patterns. Online guided meditations may be helpful for beginners.

STEP 2: Once relaxed, recite affirmations either aloud or silently. Meditation allows for a clear mind to really focus on an affirmation. “I am safe” can alleviate anxiety. “I am exactly where I need to be” reduces stress and tension.

PLAYLISTS:

STEP 1: Start by building a playlist of songs that send the message of what needs to be affirmed. If one’s affirmation is “I am empowered.” “Good as Hell” by Lizzo is a great starting point.

STEP 2: Listen. Once the playlist is complete, try to use it in an uplifting dance session or a powerful workout.

EXERCISE:

STEP 1: Create the affirmation. Consider the reason for exercising. Whether the goal of a workout is to reduce stress, feel more energized, or simply maintain good health, there is an affirmation. Examples include, “My body is growing stronger” and “I can do hard things.”

STEP 2: Recite personalized affirmations before, during, and after exercising for motivation and a positive outlook.

If one believes they are empowered, they are empowered. If one believes they can become successful, they will become successful. You can do whatever you put your mind to, one affirmation at a time.
