Newsweek magazine printed its final word on Dec. 31, 2012, ending nearly 80 years as one of the most widely read print publications in history. Newsweek Global, as the publication is known in its new all-digital format, is now only available online for $4.99 per copy.

But print is not dead in Montana – at least not for the Big Sky Weekly and Mountain Outlaw magazine. Outlaw publications reached 1,040,250 people in 2012, and we have our sights set on 1,500,000 readers in 2013. We distribute to more than 30 U.S. states, and 35,000 people around the world get their eyes on each issue of the Weekly.

No doubt we realize the importance of reaching as many readers as possible, and continually add content to explorebigsky.com, and update our Facebook and Twitter accounts regularly. But people still love the feel of a tangible read, to dog-ear pages, to make handwritten notes in the margins.

community MSU announces fall 2012 president's and dean's honor roll students msu news service

BOZEMAN – Montana State University has announced its undergraduate honor rolls for the 2012 fall semester. There are two MSU honor roll lists: the president's and the dean's honor roll. Students must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours to be on either list.

Students with a 4.0 grade point average for the semester were named to the president's honor roll. An asterisk follows the names of the 710 students named to the MSU president's honor roll in the online listing. The dean's honor roll includes the 2,646 students earning grade point averages of 3.5 or above for the semester.

Many students provide the university with their local Bozeman address instead of their Montana hometown address and therefore, appear on the Bozeman or Belgrade lists. Should you receive inquiries from parents regarding a student omitted from the honor roll, please check the Bozeman/Belgrade lists.

MSU students hailing from Big Sky making the dean’s honor roll included Christopher Antle, Kristin Cooper, Robert Fegan, Alice Reeves and Thomas Tosic. Luke Arbib was named to the university’s president’s list.

For more information regarding the list or omissions, please call the MSU News Office at (406) 994-1966. The office will try to accommodate requests from students and parents regarding hometown listings on these honor rolls.

Reminder: Resort Tax Board’s first public meeting set for Jan. 14

Letter to the editor In his recent editorial published in the Big Sky Weekly [Dec. 14 – 28], David Allen of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation made a number of statements about the killing of several wolves from Yellowstone packs that don’t jibe with my 27 years of study of gray wolves and their restoration.

Allen writes, “These [wolf] hunts are legal, necessary and scientifically sustainable.”

A number of authorities disagree with him on the latter two points.

Necessary? Why? Does Montana have too many wolves? History may add perspective. In 1884, Montana set a bounty on wolves; in the next three years, 10,261 wolves were bountied. That’s 16 times Montana’s 2011 population of 653 wolves.

Dr. Bradley J. Bergstrom, chair of the Conservation Committee of the American Society of Mammalogists, and four other authors, wrote in 2009 that having gray wolves occupy more than 2 percent of their former range

in the conterminous United States, and at a tiny fraction of their former number (380,000, according to DNA data) constitutes recovery. They wonder at the wisdom of reducing their numbers just a decade or two after they have been back in the ecosystem.

Scientifically sustainable? Dr. Linda Rutledge and five colleagues at Ontario’s Trent University wrote in 2010, “Legal and illegal killing of animals near park borders can significantly increase the threat of extirpation for populations living within ecological reserves, especially for wide-ranging large carnivores that regularly travel into unprotected areas.

“Our results indicate that even in a relatively large protected area, human harvesting outside park boundaries can affect evolutionarily important social patterns within protected areas.” The loss of these social patterns negates the value of Yellowstone as a control or baseline against which other areas, where wolf hunting is allowed, can be compared.

BIG SKY – The Resort Tax Board will hold the first of two public town hall meetings in Big Sky next Monday, Jan.14, from 6 - 9 p.m. in the Montana Room at Buck's T-4. The second meeting, also intended for all members of the public, is set for Feb. 11.

During the first town hall meeting, RTB members hope to review and answer questions about an organizational survey and application for 2013 – 2014, available now online.

Applicants must complete the survey and return it to the resort tax office by Feb. 1.

Jamey Kabisch, RTB vice-chair and manager at Lone Peak Physical Therapy, said the meetings should clear up confusion about what the board does and what it hopes to achieve down the road.

“I personally hope to have a better vision of what the community will look like in five or 10 years,” Kabisch said. “How we look as a world class ski community.”

The purpose of the town hall meetings is for residents to have open conversations with the RTB, especially regarding the

board’s future interest in granting bonds, similar to Resort Tax Communities, such as West Yellowstone.

“It’s important for people to ask questions about our request for bonding authority,” Kabisch said. “It will be interesting to see how we end up discussing it.”

Big Sky is currently considered a Resort Tax District, which Montana does not recognize as an area allowed bonding authority. The board’s plan to request bonding authority from state legislature would mean future tax receipts could be used to pay bonds.

“In the current concept, the authority would be limited to pledging 25 percent or less of the future tax receipts,” according to a letter received by the Big Sky Weekly Jan. 7. “Also being considered is whether projects requiring a bond would require a super-majority of the board or a vote of the district’s registered voters.”

The Jan. 14 and Feb. 11 meetings will be held from 6 - 9 p.m. in the Montana Room at Buck's T-4's Restaurant Complex.

Barb Rooney: Two decades in Big Sky

Association; the Finance and Audit Committee and Big Brothers, Big Sisters; and is Chair of the Big Sky Community Corporation. Rooney feels a strong connection to the area.

The community in turn, feels the connection to her.

BIG SKY – Barb Rooney is at her desk in the Summit Hotel at Big Sky. She talks fast. She has to, because she won’t be there long. She supervises hundreds of employees and is always on the go.

“Barb does a lot in the community,” said BSCC Executive Director Jessie Wiese. “I don’t know how she finds the time to do it all. Everybody is passionate in the organization and she’s a really great example of that.”

Without office windows, she can’t see the Ramcharger chairlift, just steps away from Summit at Big Sky, the ski-in, ski-out hotel she helped create in 2000. Her desk is busy, covered with papers. A bright painting on the wall depicts a tiny frog inside a sea of red flowers.

Katie Coleman, BSCC’s Camp Big Sky director, has a particularly close relationship with Rooney.

“I’ve known Barb since ’99,” Coleman said. “And I’ve been nannying the boys since Frankie was four.”

“I first came [to Big Sky] on a ski vacation over j-term in college,” said Rooney, referring to a five-week optional January term while attending the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn.

Rooney continued to visit Big Sky during summer and winter breaks for three years, working intermittently at the Big Sky Golf Course and waiting tables at Chet’s Bar and Grill and Whiskey Jack’s.

in sociology, Rooney accepted a full-time position in reservations with the resort. Her work in family

businesses from age 11, including a hardware store, sporting goods store and rental center back home in Alexandria, Minn. prepared her for the job.

“I’ve been lucky,” said Rooney, pushing a blond lock of hair behind her ear. “Big Sky tends to promote from within and I was given large opportunities early.”

These opportunities included one to take over lodging for Big Sky Resort in 1996 as hotel manager, in charge of the resort’s 400 units at the time. Her office then was in the Huntley Lodge and the position involved some growing pains.

“It was a lot of learning,” Rooney recalled. “And trial by error. It was long hours and long days working hard, trying to earn respect. At the same time I was trying to be the best mom I could be.”

Rooney had her first son, Eddie, in 1998, and her second, Frankie, four years later. They’ve kept their mother on her toes and she now says the 14- and 10-year-old, respectively, remain her first priority as a single mother.

“As you’re developing your career, your children come first,” said Rooney, who spends what free time she has skiing her favorite run, Congo, with her boys in winter and hiking and camping with them in summer.

In 2000, Rooney helped develop and open the Summit Hotel. It was a large undertaking for someone fairly new to the world of resorts

and lodging, but the right people took notice.

And she needed to be over the past few weeks. From Dec. 28 – 30, Big Sky Resort lodging was at capacity, Rooney said. The resort set a record

for single-day skier visits on Dec. 29. The next week, skier numbers surpassed forecasted visitor amounts.

“One of Barb’s biggest assets is her business sense,” Middleton said.

“She understands what the big picture is and is fabulous at setting goals for herself and others and knows what it takes to accomplish them.

She’s not an exceptional manager by accident.”

Much has changed in the Gallatin Valley since Barb Rooney started working for Big Sky Resort in 1988.

The Big Sky Chapel didn’t exist, nor did much else in the meadow, other than the post office, golf course and Country Market. Bozeman’s 19th Avenue was not yet a road, and the area below the Hidden Village community en route to Big Sky Resort was a trailer park.

From living in the Hill condominiums when she first moved to Big Sky and working as a waitress, to becoming the driving force behind the resort’s nearly 900 lodging units, Rooney has watched the community grow, along with her children. She’s learned much during her tenure here and can say one thing for certain: she’s here to stay.

“It’s the most sophisticated lodging our community has ever seen,” said Taylor Middleton, Big Sky Resort’s general manager. “And Barb took it from paper to where it is now.”

The 10-story, roughly 230-room hotel sees high-end clients and celebrities, and in August 2009 the Summit hosted President Obama after he spent the day fly-fishing on the Madison River. The First Family spent time rafting the Gallatin and taking in Yellowstone National Park.

“It was surreal,” Rooney said, of meeting the president. “It was raining and cold and he had just spent the day fishing, but he was very warm and cordial.”

The next year, Vice-President Joe Biden stayed at the Summit, after hiking Beehive Basin and jumping off the green bridge.

“Taylor [Middleton] gave him a piece of petrified wood and Biden gave Taylor a coin and said if he ever stopped by the house with the coin, he’d be invited in for a drink.”

“Most hoteliers spend their whole careers and don't have the opportunity to host a sitting president,” Middleton said. “And Barb hosted [Obama and Biden] in two years.”

Big Sky sees big enrollment jump after New Year room capacity and in two years is projected to have an incoming kindergarten class of 40 students.

BIG SKY – The Big Sky School District returned from holiday break to a big surprise on its doorstep Monday, Jan. 7. Nine new students were waiting to begin school in Big Sky in 2013, a 4 percent increase for one of the fastest growing school districts in the state.

The Boman family moved to Big Sky last week with their two sons, 5th grader Max and 9th grader Hugo,

“We had found a place and went to see it,” Clara Boman said. “But the broker said the people that applied before had gotten it. We met Mr. House at the school, and he said ‘I’ll make some calls’.”

House called the Bomans half an hour later with a lead; they went to see the new rental property and moved in two days later.

The Bomans left Miami for Montana after Daniel, the father, started doing business in the Bakken oil region, but they wanted to live in Bozeman based on friends’ recommendations. They had trouble finding anything downtown, and Bozeman was bigger than expected.

“We had four families come [to the school] around Christmas time,” Superintendent Jerry House said.

“Most of the staff wasn’t there [to enroll the kids], but we knew a minimum of four were going to start on Monday.” Another five showed up to register in a school already close to capacity.

“Big Sky School District is growing,” House said. “People see a nice looking building on the outside, but on the inside what they don’t see is the classrooms are maxed out.”

Every student needs a desk in each classroom, and teachers are becoming limited in activities they can do because of space concerns.

“Bozeman is a small town, but it’s not that small,” Clara said. “Big Sky is a mountain village. It’s good to move here from Miami after 18 years, my boys always wanted to move to the mountains and cold [and away] from the sun. So far we love it. People seem very satisfied with their lives here.”

“We have a great school here,” said Friends of Big Sky Education Board Chairman Loren Bough. “We would like to believe that the word is getting out.”

The school is getting close to its legal limit with class-

“It’s sort of a Big Sky thing,” House said. “People come for vacation and want to stay. It speaks well to this community.”

Gallatin Ice Foundation plans to “Raise the Barn” with new rink By tyler allen

BOZEMAN – Bozeman is a hockey town. Known nationally for outdoor pursuits such as skiing, hunting and climbing, this corner of Montana also has a thriving skating community.

There is abundant open space to pursue outdoor recreation, but skaters suffer from the opposite problem: a lack of ice.

Since the Ice Garden in Four Corners closed in 2006, there’s only been one indoor sheet of ice in the area – the Haynes Pavilion – while the number of hockey players, figure skaters and other ice enthusiasts continues to grow.

“Growth of hockey [and other skating] in the Gallatin Valley supported two sheets of ice,” said Justin Tibbit, Development Director of the Gallatin Ice Foundation. “When the Ice Garden closed, all of a sudden you had programs from two sheets of ice compressed into one and it stretched the ice time.”

The GIF was founded in 2006 after the Ice Garden closed, to address this demand for ice time. It’s proposed a new sheet of ice next to Haynes Pavilion at the Gallatin Valley Fairgrounds, a year-round skating complex that would eventually have permanent bleachers seating 1,000 people.

Since Haynes is a pavilion hosting other uses during the warmer months and isn’t designed for operation in the summer months, the skating season in Bozeman is only five months. And during the season that ice is completely booked from 6 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week.

“Growth [of skating opportunities] has hit a bump stop,” Tibbit said.

“If we build another facility, all these programs can keep growing. If not, they’re pretty much all full.”

The Bozeman Ice Dogs, Montana State University Bobcats, Haynes Hockey League (HHL), Youth Ice Dogs program, public skating time, Puck Lunch and the Bozeman figure skating club all vie for the limited ice time. There’ve also been requests for a curling league and community interest in broomball.

The HHL alone has 500 adults on 28 teams in four different divisions, according to Julie Keck, Bozeman Amateur Hockey Association Operations Director.

“The adult league is full,” Keck said. “This is the first year we had

to turn people away despite expanding by two teams [from last year]. Almost every player in the adult league plays one game a week but most would prefer to play at least two, she said.

The youth teams have to split the rink and practice on half the ice. The Youth Ice Dogs program has 225 skaters on 11 teams and there is little room for that program to expand despite the growing demand.

“We’re not even trying to expand the youth house league,” Keck said.

“Because they have two sheets of ice, Missoula has four teams that play house league and then also travel. If we had two sheets of ice we’d be marketing a much bigger program.”

Public skating time is limited by the demand for organized hockey and skating, and is only open between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m., a time when few can utilize it, Keck said. Saturdays from noon to 1:20 p.m. is the only “prime time” public skating and none is offered at night.

So far, the GIF has raised $300,000 for their “Raise the Barn” campaign. The first phase of the plan is estimated to cost about $1 million and would fund construction.

After that the ice plant would be upgraded to meet the demand of two sheets, the mechanical room expanded, and then the slab with refrigeration coils would be poured for the new facility.

Next, a new entryway to the fairgrounds from Oak Street would be completed, and the parking lot would be improved and expanded.

Eventually locker rooms, bleachers, a mezzanine, events shop and restaurants are planned.

It’s a project that will take a significant fundraising effort by the GIF, but if the facility is built the positive economic impact on the community could also be significant.

“This could be one more critical piece to fueling the [local] economy,” Tibbit said. “There are lots of ancillary benefits from this facility.” He cites the rippling affects that hockey camps –which could be expanded greatly with

new ice – could have on the region, as families travel to Bozeman with their kids and spend money skiing, golfing, dining or visiting Yellowstone National Park or Big Sky.

Bozeman could also be a destination for NHL teams seeking a high altitude training facility, Keck said.

A second sheet of ice in Bozeman will take some time, but as the skating community – and demand for ice – grows in the Gallatin Valley, that time may not be far off.

MSU observes MLK Jr. Day with humanist activist Chris Stedman msu news service

BOZEMAN – On Jan. 17, 2013, Montana State University will host guest lecturer Chris Stedman to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In the spirit of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., who urged people to see the world whole, with its history of imperfection and future promise, Stedman’s talk, “Telling Stories:

Building Interfaith Bridges” will cover the power of interfaith work, mobilization of diverse communities, and creating change.

Stedman, the Assistant Humanist Chaplain and the Values Action Coordinator for the Humanist Community at Harvard University, writes and speaks throughout the country about interfaith

work and community building. He received a B.A. in Religion from Augsburg College, and an M.A. in Religion from Meadville Lombard Theological School at the University of Chicago where he was awarded the Billings Prize for Most Outstanding Scholastic Achievement.

Previously a content developer and adjunct trainer for the Interfaith Youth Core, Stedman is an atheist working to foster positive, productive dialogue and collaborative action between faith communities and the non-religious. He writes for a variety of blogs and news sources including the Huffington Post and Washington Post, on topics including faith, religion and LGBTQ issues.

Stedman’s book "Faitheist: How an Atheist Found Common Ground with the Religions" was released in November 2012. According to Booklist, “Stedman’s story is motivational, his thoughts on interreligious dialogue insightful, and in this short memoir, he proves himself an activist in the truest sense and one to watch.”

BUTTE – With the arrival of winter weather, NorthWestern Energy is reminding customers of the importance of safely using portable heating devices.

Recently, the improper use of plug-in electric heaters has sparked several fires in NorthWestern’s residential and commercial service territories. In almost all cases, customers overloaded circuits and increased the risk of electrical fire danger.

While portable heaters can safely provide additional heat, improper use can result in fires, electric shock or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safe and efficient heater use.

Avoid plugging space heaters into outlets that could overload an electrical circuit.

Fix or replace frayed or exposed wiring on electric heaters.

•

Keep the heater away from curtains, bedspreads or anything flammable.

•

Keep electric space heaters away from bathtubs, showers and sinks.

•

Make sure heaters are stable and can’t tip over easily.

•

Keep small children and pets away from portable heaters.

To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, supply adequate oxygen and ensure proper ventilation of indoor heaters fueled by kerosene, natural gas, propane or wood. Always consider ventilation requirements when using additional heating sources and consider installing a carbon monoxide alarm near the fuel-burning appliance.

Some heaters, if not properly vented, can be the source of dangerous carbon monoxide. The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headaches, nausea, vomiting, fatigue and confusion. If you suspect carbon monoxide might be present, immediately seek fresh air and call NorthWestern Energy.

Montana students seeking assistance paying for higher education are encouraged to apply for the nonprofit Student Assistant Foundation’s Circle of Success scholarships.

Applications for the $1,000 scholarships will be available at smartaboutcollege.org beginning on Jan. 1, and the application deadline is Friday, March 1.

"We are looking forward to meeting the members of the class of 2013,” said Darbie Hess, grants manager for SAF. To qualify for a Circle of Success scholarship, applicants must be Montana residents who graduated from a Montana high school and are attending a Montana college or university at least half time. They must be in their second, third or fourth year of postsecondary education and maintaining at least a 2.5 grade point average. A committee of SAF employees evaluates the applications to determine who receives the grants.

HELENA – The Montana Department of Revenue released its biennial report on Dec. 27, in accordance with the state’s constitution, requiring the department to publish the report every two years and submit it to the governor and legislature.

New to this edition of the biennial report are flow charts, including one that illustrates Montana's oil and gas severance tax rates and another illustrating how revenue generated from oil and gas taxes is distributed to the state and counties. The charts help citizens and lawmakers understand Montana's complex tax structure.

The 322-page document provides an overview of the taxes the department collected and distributed between July 1, 2010, and June 30, 2012.

"The report serves as an excellent tool for Montanans to understand not just how Montana's tax system works, but also how the Department of Revenue operates," said Director of Revenue Dan Bucks.

The report indicates how the Department of Revenue’s tax collections are distributed around the state.

Education saw more than 32 percent of all revenue allocations, while the department allocated nearly 30 percent to public safety, welfare and health.

Highlights in the report show an increase in wage-withholding taxes of more than six percent, indicating incomes are on the rise in Montana, and an increase in property taxes showing statewide housing prices have returned to 2008 prerecession reappraisal levels.

Natural resources and infrastructure received more than 20 percent of allocations and 14 percent went to administrative, legislative and judicial costs. Less than 3 percent went to interest on debt.

HELENA – Montana Gov.-elect Steve Bullock released his budget for fiscal years 2014 – 2015 at a press conference in the Capitol on Friday Jan. 4.

According to Bullock, implementing his budget will create jobs and grow the economy, improve education, lead to a more effective government and cut taxes.

Bullock’s budget, which includes over $110 million in tax cuts and rebates for Montana-based small businesses and homeowners, also contains funding for historic investments in education and job-creating measures.

“Just like the budgets that we come up with around the kitchen table, a state’s budget is a reflection of the values and the priorities of the people that live and work there,” Bullock said.

Big Sky hockey anticipates strong season

BIG SKY – Big Sky hockey is gaining ground, and the organization holding the reigns is taking steps forward. This season kicks off with the first ever men’s hockey league and a big game: the Pavelich Invitational on Jan. 12.

The Big Sky Skating and Hockey Association just started its third season at the Town Center ice rink, and Griffin Kilby is excited for the coming ice time.

After all, the BSSHA co-founder now gets paid to maintain the rink, and the community is rallying behind the nonprofit organization, which earned tax-exempt status last June.

“Without help from resort tax, it was a struggle.

Now [we can] offer a better product to the community.”

Additional funding provided came from grants provided by the Yellowstone Club Community Foundation, and membership dues contribute to the organization’s success.

In early November, the Gallatin Conservation Commission also leant a hand by voting to extend BSSHA’s permit by 10 years, and Kilby attributes this extension to more than 50 emails from community members on the organization’s behalf.

BSSHA began in 2011 with a grassroots effort and a drive to provide this community with an alternative to skiing or snowboarding. In October of that year, Simkins-Hallin delivered the rink’s boards, a $500

Kilby and Blechta hope to move the facility to a more permanent location soon.

“I always kept this place in the back of my mind,” said Pavelich, who visited Big Sky on vacation, but knew he’d be back. He eventually did move to Big Sky, nearly 20 years ago, to pursue his other love.

For now, the nonprofit is growing. It hosts broomball, a kids’ clinic and a four-team adult hockey league, which has games on Monday and Thursday evenings. It’s the first season Big Sky will operate the league, consisting of seven to eight players per team. He already has 30 sign-ups.

“There were too many old people in Florida,” Pavelich said. “I told them, ‘I’m going skiing.’”

For Kilby, it’s all about community and his love for hockey. He began skating on a pond his parents owned near Duluth, Minn. at three-years-old and started playing organized youth hockey at five. After playing in high school and then for a junior team (between high school and college), Kilby attended Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minn. where he played hockey all four years.

When the ex-pro first moved here, he played in Four Corners and was happy when Kilby and Blechta decided to work on a rink in Town Center. Now Pavelich, 83, is joining the two BSSHA founders in a dream to move the rink to a long-term facility for the entire community.

January will mark the third annual Pavelich Invitational, a game named for Big Sky resident and former Detroit Red Wings hockey player Marty Pavelich. The four-time Stanley Cup winner will drop the ceremonial first puck at the game, slated for 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12.

Originally from Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada, Pavelich always wanted to play for the Red Wings.

Pavelich became a mountain host at Big Sky Resort and remained so for the next 15 years. He loved to “meet ‘em and greet ‘em,” he said.

“I’d like to raise $1 million or so for a concrete slab with a temporary roof over it that could sit four or five thousand people,” he said.

“We’re in the process of working on fundraising to move to a more permanent location near Town Center,” Kilby said. “And we will as funding becomes available.”

Teaching area youth about the game could put Big Sky on the ice hockey map.

“Hockey is here in town now,” Pavelich said. “If kids become good skaters, they’ll be great skiers.

All it takes is one kid from Big Sky to make it to the NHL for hockey to take off here.”

BOZEMAN – On Jan. 5, the MSU men's basketball team defeated Eastern Washington in a come from behind, overtime win. The Cats (2-2, 5-7) spotted the Eagles a 9-0 start then spent the rest of the game fighting to stay in the contest.

with just under three minutes to play, but Eastern Washington (1-3, 3-11) led for most of the contest. Early in the second half the Cats were down 35-50.

With 20 seconds left, the Cats were down 6264 but tied the score at 64 to force overtime.

The Eagles scored first in post-regulation, but MSU eventually built a three-point lead, 6966, with a minute to play. Eastern Washington scored again to pull within one, but Bobcat Mike Dison hit a clutch free throw to make the final score 70-68 after the Eagles clanged one off the front of the iron in the closing second.

The Bobcats shot 34 percent from the field and hit 73 percent of their foul shots. They held Eastern Washington to just six buckets for the last 15 minutes of the game, shut down the Eagles’ 3-point shooters and forced 12 turnovers.

The boys’ varsity team is playing stronger than scores might indicate. A wellrounded team with a number of promising players, the Big Horns are practicing hard to close that gap in upcoming games.

The LPHS girls’ basketball team is excited to have a full team with five players from LPHS and five eighth graders from Ophir Middle School. The team can now have full-court scrimmages during practice and more substitutes off the bench for games.

As a team, they’re working hard to improve their execution on offense and to have fewer turnovers with better, more consistent defensive rotations.

“Our team depth has already improved, and I expect a few more players to push for playing time as the season progresses,” said Coach Al Malinowski. “If that does happen, I think we will be right where we want to be by the district tournament in February.”

As the team improves, Malinowski hopes to draw a bigger, louder crowd, making the home court a tough place for opponents to play.

With more players, the girls can play harder without having to worry about losing energy over the course of the game.

Peterson not only proved the pundits wrong, starting the season with a phenomenal three touchdown performance, but finished the year with 2,097 rushing yards. It was second most in NFL history and nearly 500 yards more than the runner-up this season, Alfred Morris of the Redskins.

Over the past several years, the passing game in the NFL has produced eye-popping statistics. A 5,000-yard passing season used to be a rarity, yet we’ve seen four such seasons in the last two years. Drew Brees became the first quarterback in the history of the game to pass for more than 5,000 yards in back to back seasons, and passing records are being eclipsed each year.

This quarterback success trickles down to the wide receiver position as well.

Calvin Johnson broke the record for most receiving yards in a season this year, and just nine of the 39 players in NFL history with at least 10,000 receiving yards accomplished the feat before 1995. As pass interference rules – and specifically illegal contact rules – become more stringent, passing statistics

have dramatically increased. This is a passing league.

However, one player stood out as a reminder of more traditional football this season. Adrian Peterson, running back for the Minnesota Vikings, has been completely dominant this year, and is the primary reason they made the playoffs.

Approximately a year ago, Peterson had ACL surgery and was told his status as a starter in the 2012 season was in question. Throughout the off-season, football fans had no idea what to expect from Peterson, and the discussion of elite running backs in

Not only did Peterson rush for so many yards, he did it while averaging six yards per carry and was second in the league in rushing attempts. All of this production after such a serious knee injury has catapulted Peterson back into the discussion as best in the league, and even the league MVP this season.

Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are both deserving of the MVP award. But Peterson had a historic year. Only the seventh running back in NFL history to record 2,000 yards in a season, he did it on a team that struggled offensively.

Peterson averaged six yards per carry against defenses that were focusing on him each and every week.

Even in the final week of the season, when the Green Bay Packers knew Peterson was going to be the focal point of

406.995.4060 55 Lone Peak Drive | Big Sky Town Center the Vikings offense, they couldn’t stop him. He finished the game with 199 yards on the ground, placing him only eight yards shy of the single-season record. The Vikings won the game, lifting them into the playoffs as a result.

Other players certainly had excellent years, but Peterson should win the MVP hands down. This was historic, in an era when running the football is not emphasized as it used to be, even just a decade ago. To accomplish this feat a year after having ACL surgery makes it all the more impressive. He was the primary reason why the Vikings – which only won three games a year ago – finished 10-6 and are in the playoffs, making this season legendary.

BIG SKY—You wouldn’t typically expect a bakery to win best coffee and pizza in the annual Best of Big Sky Awards. But the Blue Moon isn’t just any bakery.

Although they make bread and traditional baked goods, Blue Moon Bakery also serves breakfast and lunch sandwiches, salads, gourmet pizza, beer and fresh coffee. And they deliver.

Amy and Christian Johnsen purchased the business in March of 2001 from people who were running it as a traditional bakery, selling baked goods and closing at 2 p.m. daily. The Johnsens purchased the bakery and immediately installed pizza ovens, making a faster, more efficient operation. With no one else delivering in the meadow back then, pizza was a big expansion of the business.

Prior to buying the bakery, Amy and Christian worked in restaurants for around 20 years, giving

Skylar Burkman, who’s worked at Blue Moon for six years, enjoys the fun, positive environment instilled by the Johnsens.

The Johnsens haven’t changed the menu much since they started, as people seem to like it, and they don’t want to eliminate any items people come back for on a regular basis. They have recently, however, introduced biscuits and gravy to the menu and have lunch specials on occasion.

Voted best pizza and coffee by locals for the second year in a row, there’s no doubt the Johnsens know what they’re doing. Finding the right coffee and the right way to work the dough wasn’t an easy task though.

Christian oversees yeast-based goods, such as the pizza and bread, while Amy runs the non-yeast baking side of things. However, the Johnsens have recently have been able to have full time employees baking for them.

“It’s a lot of fun, and everyone gets along. Christian and Amy are awesome people. I think that’s why their employees stay here and really care about the restaurant,” Burkman said.

The Blue Moon is happy to have business from tourists, but is foremost dedicated to serving Big

StartupBozeman aims to connect region’s entrepreneurial resources By sean forbes

Bozeman, Big Sky - There was a time in and around the Gallatin Valley, not long ago, when the young and restless drawn here by institutions like Montana State University and mountains such as Lone Peak had to choose between a certain quality of life or making what would commonly be considered a comfortable living. That was quite often somewhere else.

StartupBozeman — a burgeoning network of entrepreneurial professionals primarily organized by Rob Irizarry, Gary Gannon and Jake Cook — sees that scenario changing, and is working to bring together the resources to help make it happen.

“There’s always people doing things, it’s just a matter of providing a place for them all to gather,” Irizarry said. “It’s kind of interesting to see how many people there are that were sort of looking for this.”

What began with the blogging efforts of Irizarry, who looks at his work as a return to his startup roots after leaving RightNow Technologies following its acquisition by Oracle, is blossoming into a sort of Farmers’ Alamanac for small businesses by connecting those who have been there before with others just starting out.

StartupBozeman has also branched out into mentoring at Bozeman High School and informal meetings at Rockford Coffee every Thursday.

“One of the things about the entrepreneur deal is

there’s no map,” Irizarry said. “You’ve got to figure out all this stuff. So one thing that’s interesting about entrepreneurs, the smart ones, they realize that even though it’s a different business many of those problems are the same.”

With the growth of the internet, and technology in general, as well as lean business practices relieving some initial costs, starting a business no longer has to be the monumental undertaking it once was. And, despite the current economic situation, Irizarry sees plenty of opportunity, and more than a few actual examples, of people taking the initiative and pursuing their passions.

That motivation is bearing fruit, like Oracle’s interest in RightNow. “If you look historically, often those large exits, which there’s no doubt this was a large exit, provides a bunch of different seed[s] for a startup community,” Irizarry said. “So there are people with talent, money, experience, all the kind of stuff in the Petri dish that you need to get a startup community to the next level.”

To that end, StartupBozeman is also working to connect those communities and interests already developing throughout the state.

“In Big Sky, I’m … there are a lot of people that live there or own property up there who have done it, exited, and are now kind of done,” Irizarry said. “But those kinds of people, they can’t help themselves.

They’re wired that way. So I think there is a tremen-

dous opportunity in relation to Big Sky both for investment and the talent pool.

“Here’s a guy who built a company, or was CFO of the company, or has a marketing specialty, or is an electrical engineer, or whatever those talent pools are, where they could mentor companies in Big Sky or in Bozeman. The hard part when you start out [is]— to use the Montana expression — ‘if you haven’t been to the rodeo, it’s all new.’”

That’s where StartupBozeman sees experience stepping in and helping to bolster an admittedly daunting success rate. Something Irizarry hopes will not only benefit the bold few, but will eventually translate into a broader prosperity.

“I’ve got three kids. I’d love to see them, when they graduate from high school or MSU, not have to leave,” Irizarry said. “So many parents, they look at it and [ask] where do their kids go? They go to Seattle, or D.C, or they go to Silicone Valley, because that’s where the jobs are.

“I think that dynamic is also changing, and will continue to … it’s less about the talent-pool problem anymore, and more about protecting that culture – that we don’t need or want a Silicone Valley here. We want to keep the special part special, and actually leverage that to build something that’s unique.”

Taxidermy: Turning hobby into profession By maria wyllie

BIG SKY – In a place with prime hunting and fishing, Big Sky seems like the perfect place for a taxidermist. But running a year-round taxidermy business isn’t as easy as one might think.

Montana, Wyoming and Idaho for fly-fishing trips since he was a kid. As an avid huntsman and fisherman, he decided Big Sky was the perfect place to call home.

Cory Payment, known by most as Norm, is Big Sky’s only licensed taxidermist and owns Shedhorn Mountain Taxidermy, located 1.2 miles south of the Big Sky turnout on U.S. Highway 191. The business sits right on the Gallatin River, one of the nation’s premier fly-fishing spots.

When Big Sky resident Adam Skaggs first met Norm, he had two ducks as pets that would ride around with him in his truck and keep him company.

Having opened two years ago, Norm is still working to grow his business and hopes to work solely in taxidermy one day. For now, he’s head of housekeeping at Moonlight Basin, a job he’s had for the past seven years.

“He’d open the car door like two dogs would jump out, but it was two mallard ducks. They were following him around like dogs.”

After working his way up the ladder to housekeeping manager, Norm realized he couldn’t go any further in his career and looked to turn his hobby of taxidermy into a possible profession.

Although he grew up in Northern Minnesota, Norm has been coming to

Before gaining his taxidermist training, Norm mounted bleached skulls and antlers, called European mounts, for four years.

Boiling the skulls to get the meat off takes anywhere from 10-16 hours, and bleaching them takes another 4-7 days.

“Buddies were bringing them by, and I’d do my own, so I was into some of the stuff before I went to school,” Norm said.

In 2008, he attended the Missoula Valley School of Taxidermy in Thompson Falls, Mont., where he learned to mount fish, birds and mammals.

Norm finds birds to be the most difficult and the most time consuming to mount. One bird has tens of thousands of feathers that must be straightened out perfectly, he says. Big game animals are among his favorites to mount.

After getting the skins back from the tannery, Norm measures them and orders a foam form that is as close in shape and size to the original animal as possible. A lot of sewing and great attention to detail over long periods of time is required to get it right.

For Norm, the hardest part of the job is the immense amount of detailed work taxidermy demands.

“I’m really anal when I’m doing it, but sometimes you have to get away from it,” said Norm.

After the fall rifle season, customers bring Norm the skins they want mounted. He then sends them off to the tannery but doesn’t get them back for another six months. With little to do but wait during the winter months, a second job is crucial.

Most of Norm’s business has come via word of mouth, but he hopes to attract more locals as well as those from out of town who are hunting and fishing in the area.

Shoulder mounts are Norm’s preferred mounts to work on. He mounted the elk in Choppers, which belongs to Jim Scwalbe, and he is planning on putting a mount of his own big horn sheep in the gymnasium at Lone Peak High School.

Full-body mounts are the most expensive, and not many people want them due to lack of space. However, Norm is hoping to change that by decorating the resort homes around Big Sky with these full-sized mounts, allowing him to grow his business and make Shedhorn Mountain Taxidermy his only job.

Although Norm spends hours alone sewing skins to foam forms and perfectly aligning feathers, he also likes to gather his friends around to enjoy the meat from his kills.

From hunting, to skinning, to mounting and cooking group dinners, taxidermy is more than just a hobby or a profession for Norm. It’s why he calls Big Sky home.

While the bank had several opportunities to sell the site to others, in pieces, the plan they presented to us was the only one that maximizes the value of the property for the community."

The 61 acres is just west of the old Story Mill, which was founded in 1885 by Nelson Story and once the city's largest employer. Two railroad lines ran near it, and the land contained a cattle stockyard and slaughterhouse.

The property includes the Story Mill Spur Trail, which connects downtown Bozeman to north-side destinations like the East Gallatin Recreation Area, and may someday link to the "M" and Drinking Horse Mountain trails.

"This is an incredible opportunity for our community," said Penelope Pierce, Executive Director of the Gallatin Valley Land Trust. "Not only could it help the water quality and habitat of the East Gallatin River - a blue ribbon fishery - it could provide exceptional outdoor recreational opportunities.”

Earlier this year, Bozeman voters overwhelmingly approved a $15 million Parks and Trails Bond to be used for acquiring land for parks, trails, waterways and recreation. The city of Bozeman is setting up a process to review applications for acquisitions through the bond, and the Story Mill land could be one of the first projects considered for a portion of these funds. The public funds would be matched by private donations.

Main Boulder fuel reduction operations to start Jan. 11 gallatin national forest

BIG TIMBER – Fuels reduction work on the Yellowstone Ranger District, Gallatin National Forest will begin in the Main Boulder River corridor Friday Jan. 11, south of Big Timber, Mont. RY Logging, the contractor for the project, has begun preliminary operations to move equipment into planned cleanup units and has started road and site preparation.

The 160-acre fuels reduction project, in its fourth year, is expected to be finished in the Main Boulder area this year, with the final cleanup work being done in June or July 2013.

“After the fire season and continued severity we had in 2012, we are excited to see this project coming to a successful conclusion and hope to have new fuels reduction projects starting soon,” said Ashley Sites, east zone fire management officer.

The Yellowstone Ranger District has plans to start fuels reduction projects this winter on the East Boulder Road – which is currently in litigation – and the Boulder and Smith Creek drainages in the Crazy Mountains, north of Big Timber.

Throughout the remainder of the project, hauling operations will not be permitted on weekends in order to limit conflicts with recreationists. The Forest Service warns visitors and residents to use caution when traveling in the area.

BIG SKY – Lone Peak glimmered, a white gem beneath a deep blue, frozen morning sky. The static of snowboards shattered the early silence as riders tested the Smash Life! banked slalom course on Jan. 5. A herd of mountain goats, perched above the A-Z chutes, took in the timed event.

Other competitors piled atop Never Sweat off the Lone Peak Triple Chair warming their hands, though the adrenaline of competition filled their veins. Photographers from ESPN, Transworld Snowboarding and Snowboarder magazines speckled the course while organizers shoveled snow into banked turns and over rutted areas and exposed rock.

The second annual Smash Life! banked slalom competition at Big Sky Resort kicked off in the name of Aaron Robinson (A-Rob), a Whitefish, Mont. native who died in an accident while filming a snowboard video in Chile during the summer of 2011.

Smash Life! organizer Shane Stalling put together the first event last year to benefit the Plant a Seed Foundation, created to provide kids in the Whitefish Mountain area with opportunities to snowboard, in Aaron’s name.

older brother Jason, down from the Flathead Valley near Whitefish. It wasn’t the first time Jason traveled south in the name of his brother.

After learning of the accident in 2011, Jason rallied his friends and took off for Chile. They finished the final third of the film, titled “Manifest,” which showed at the beginning of the awards ceremony, held later that evening in the Huntley Lodge.

“It’s pretty touching to see the support of all [these riders],” said Jason, 28. “Aaron would be super hyped. This is such a pure event.

It’s all about cruising with friends and slapping fives.”

On the course, riders had their hands full with tight gates and banked turns that had them horizontal to the fall line. The runout was straight, however, and snowboarders of all ages tucked through the finish, blowing by the course’s timer, Jeff Pawling.

“It’s definitely kinda gnarly out there,” said Pawling, a first-season Big Sky employee from Newton, Mass.

Sarris McComb, 34, of Missoula screamed by the finish and ran up to Pawling to check her time. She won the event in the women’s category last season.

“Plant a Seed is great for the kids,” said McComb, whose 37.86-second time won her first place at this year’s event. “What A-Rob’s mom did for them…,” she paused,

shading her eyes against the bright morning sun. “She became a lifty so her boys could ride.”

This year, funds from the Plant a Seed Foundation allow 16-17 children in the Whitefish area to rent equipment and ride for five nights and three days over the course of five weeks, according to Jason Robinson.

“We’re usually focused on the family market,” said Kipp Proctor, Big Sky Resort’s media relations and community manager. “This is a really cool event for a great cause. We hope it will bring more snowboarders out for the event [next year] and more people to Big Sky.” Before the awards ceremony, the crowd watched “Manifest” on a big screen as Stalling put together prize packages from Never Summer snowboards, hand-made belt

buckles by local Ty Mack, and t-shirts, hats, socks and more from World Boards and Four-0-Six. After the ceremony, Jason and his friends unveiled the premier of “Of Life and Love,” a tribute to A-Rob. Though not available to the public yet, the new film will again show on Jan. 18 at the Smash Life! banked slalom event in Alpental, Wash.

Local Todd Kirby edged-out a victory in the men’s category with 35.42, one-hundredth of a second faster than Jason Robinson; Sarris McComb took home first for the women; Jason Schultz won for the masters and Casey Holloran and Rhett Lenzing placed first for 14-17 and 13 and under age groups, respectively.

The year 2012 ended with a bang, bringing some of the best early season conditions in recent years. We’re still waiting to see what’s in store for 2013.

Although there’s been less snow in the past few weeks, a snowstorm during the second week of January has brought enough snow to tide over hungry locals until the next big dump.

Don’t forget about all of the activities Big Sky has to offer when the lifts are closed. Get different muscles moving

with a snowshoe tour, some backcountry hiking or an hour or two of yoga in the wellness studio.

You won’t want to miss out on Big Sky’s first “snobar” of the year, Saturday, Jan. 12 from 6 - 8 p.m. in the plaza. For those 21 and over, there will be a DJ bumping killer beats and a bar and dance floor made entirely of snow.

Big Sky Women’s Ski Clinics. The two five-session clinics will be held every Wednesday from 10 a.m. noon. with the first clinic running Jan. 9 - Feb. 6 and the second one running Feb. 13 - March 13.

EVENTS Banff Mountain Film Festival rolls its reels into Bozeman By tyler allen

BOZEMAN – The 2012 Banff Mountain Film Festival marked its 37th year celebrating mountain culture in Banff, Alberta. The nine-day November competition resulted in 79 finalists from 370 submissions.

Organizers hit the road with those finalists shortly thereafter for the annual world tour, which began more than 25 years ago. This year the tour will comprise of 740 shows in more than 400 locations around the globe, including stops in Bozeman at the Emerson Theater Friday, Jan. 18 and Willson Auditorium Saturday, Jan. 19.

The BMFF has screened films in Bozeman since 1993, making it one of the early tour stops, said Meagan Stewart, Program Coordinator of the Banff World Tour. In each town they partner with local organizations to put on the show.

“We’ve always partnered with the Bridger Ski Foundation [in Bozeman],” Stewart said. “Local organizations run all the operations on the ground and get the word out. We roll into Bozeman with all the equipment necessary, but the volunteers are running everything else.”

Muir String Quartet to highlight concert series

BIG SKY – The Arts Council of Big Sky is presenting the 10th annual Peggy Dicken Schwer Memorial Fund Concert Series, coming to various venues this winter in Big Sky.

“Mwahahaha!”

Why the maniacal laughter? As soon as my brother reads the title of this column, he will have to stop whatever he’s doing, and dance around wildly wherever he is, no matter what.

I’ll explain a bit further.

These intimate dinner concerts highlight regional and international musicians in a small setting with food served by some of Big Sky’s top chefs.

On Friday, Jan. 18, the acclaimed Muir String Quartet heads back to Big Sky for a performance at the Jack Creek Grille at Moonlight Lodge. Now in its 33rd season, the Muir String Quartet is acknowledged as one of the world's most powerful and insightful ensembles. The quartet is comprised of Peter Zazofsky, violin; Steven Ansell, viola; Lucia Lin, violin; and Michael Reynolds, cello.

In 2012-2013, the Grammy-winning Muir String Quartet continues its series at Boston University with the complete Bartok Quartets, the Beethoven Cycle at Rhode Island College in celebration of 20 years of concerts there, and other performances throughout North America and China.

On Friday, Feb. 15, the Arts Council will host a concert featuring pianist Chris Nemec, along with soprano Laura Turner, at Buck’s T-4 Lodge.

The final concert of the winter will take place on Sunday, Feb. 24, with Native American songwriter

I’m thorough, there was research involved. If I was to dance in public (something I typically avoid like the plague), I was going to do it right.

After spending a significant amount of time in front of the computer, watching Rolling Stones’ music videos and following along, I honed my moves.

My brother and his friends are my kind of people – intelligent, funny, and most importantly, spiteful. For quite some time they have been playing what they call the “Jagger game.”

Each evening begins with the social hour at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:45 p.m. and the concert at 8 p.m. Tickets for each event are $50, which

The gist is that, if you join, you gain the ability to tell other participants to do their best Jagger once an hour. Of course I am referring to the hip wiggling, flailing dance moves of the one and only Mick Jagger. The downside is that you may also be called upon to shake it Jagger-style at any time, thereby forfeiting your dignity.

Once you join, there is no way out, and excuses are not tolerated for noncompliance. Remember, these

people are creative and vindictive, so if called upon, you shake it. The Jagger game is for keeps, and it must be your best Jagger.

Shortly after moving to Bozeman, I made my first Jagger challenge and now live in perpetual regret. Because

Since joining, I have been “Jaggered” (we use it as a verb) all over town.

Highlights have included the movie theater (front row), dinner parties (the nice kind), in bed (you heard me), and the county fair (the perfect place to be made into a spectacle).

My least favorite experience has been the phone message Jagger. When Jaggered with friends, I am at least provided the opportunity to point accusingly and loudly proclaim my distress before the humiliation begins. When I am all alone check-

ing voicemail for example, or getting groceries out of the car, there is only me, sashaying down the silent street while neighbors watch with concern.

The advantage of course, is the excellent potential for revenge.

Allow me to relate what I consider to be my crowning achievement thus far.

My brother was in a crowded airport, and called me for some sort of advice.

Near the end of the conversation, as he was saying goodbye, I stopped him, explaining that we had one final matter to discuss.

After instructing him to do his best Jagger, my brother’s typically strong voice fell to a whisper. Crestfallen and betrayed he pleaded, “No. Please, no?

His bad luck was to the amusing good fortune of travelers in the terminal.

Depending on where this column finds my brother, I may have to revise my crowning achievement statement.

Skiing and snowboarding can be costly endeavors, but while mountain athletes expect to pony up financially to play in the powder, these sports can also exact a steep environmental toll. Between impacts of ski resort construction and maintenance, transportation to the slopes and required gear, being an “eco-friendly” skier or snowboarder can be challenging.

While environmentally concerned riders could spend months poring through reams of documents comparing resorts, some opt to let the Ski Area Citizens' Coalition do the work for them.

SACC is a cooperative effort among environmental organizations that

releases an annual “Environmental Scorecard” rating ski resorts' green efforts. The Sierra Nevada Alliance is leading the 2012-2013 effort and expects the latest report to be released by President's Day. To produce the scorecard, SACC compiles and evaluates information it receives from the Forest Service and other agencies, often through Freedom of Information Act inquiries, as well as voluntary reports from resorts. The grading system evaluates western U.S. resorts in four categories: Habitat Protection, Protecting Watersheds, Addressing Global Climate Change, and Environmental Practices and Policies.
