ASIA In this month’s edition of Asia Outlook, we take a ‘lighter’ look at an industry that has dominated the publication over the past 12 months: construction. This certainly doesn’t represent a more half-hearted overview of the sector, however, rather a more literal look at two businesses pioneering the lighting sector across APAC. The first of which is Klaasen Lighting Studio, a business that has The façade focus continues as ALT Limited divulges the more-than 25 years of innovation that has led to it becoming Asian architecture’s one-stop consultancy shop gone from strength to strength in Asia-Pacific since its Founder, Martin Klaasen saw an opportunity to bring professional lighting services to Singapore in the early 1990s. The enlightening journey continues courtesy of Meinhardt Light Studio, kickstarting a trio of Meinhardt articles set to appear in Asia Outlook over the coming months. Meinhardt EPCM and Meinhardt Facades are yet to come, but the business’ Light Studio operations shine this June and Associate Director, Shaun Teo recalls the challenging, but worthwhile path to industry prominence. Deputy Editor, Phoebe Calver is responsible for both aforementioned, exclusive interviews, and continues to ‘see the light’ via the magazine’s most concerted business travel guide segment to date. Basking in the sunshine that the Maldives, Jakarta and Hong Kong has to offer, her overviews of each location’s proposition to the international community is compounded by my own return to Papua New Guinea where the country’s past 12 months of tourism and corporate progression are dissected. However, coming full circle, our headline act this month once again emanates from planet: construction, and signals a merge between recent façade focuses and a concentration on cladding. ALT Limited’s 25 years of experience has endeared itself to some of the world’s leading architects and building owners, contributing both strands of construction specialty to projects including the GT International Tower, RCBC Plaza, Rockwell Centre, One McKinley and Europe’s tallest residential tower, Landmark Pinnacle. “There are several exciting projects in the Asian region at present - particularly in China – and as we have strategic offices in China, Manila and Kuala Lumpur we are easily able to service the area accordingly,” affirms Company Principal, Joe Theodore Khoury, to turn the lights off at the end of another edition.

Foxconn Investigating Labour Conditions at China Factory used for Amazon Contract manufacturer, Foxconn said it is investigating a plant in China that makes devices for Amazon.com Inc, after a US watchdog group criticised what it described as harsh working conditions at the factory. A 94-page report by New York-based China Labor Watch that followed a nine-month investigation cited excessive hours, low wages, inadequate training and an overreliance on “dispatch” or temporary workers in violation of Chinese law at the Hengyang Foxconn plant in Hunan province, which makes Echo Dot smart

speakers and Kindle e-readers. “We are carrying out a full investigation of the areas raised by that report, and if found to be true, immediate actions will be taken to bring the operations into compliance with our Code of Conduct,” Foxconn Technology Group said in a statement emailed to Reuters. Taiwan-based Foxconn, known formally as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, is the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer and employs more than a million people.

Foxconn, which also makes Apple Inc iPhones, came under fire in 2010 for a spate of suicides at plants in China. Foxconn pledged to improve working conditions. China Labor Watch said its investigation found that about 40 percent of workers at the plant were dispatch workers, far exceeding the 10 percent limit under Chinese law. Dispatch workers were paid at the same rate for regular and overtime hours, rather than time and a half as required, said China Labor Watch Program Officer Elaine Lu.

It said criticism of the G7 meeting and praise for the SCO summit marked “an important change”. In the Canadian province of Quebec

at the weekend, US President, Donald Trump threw the G7’s efforts to show a united front into disorder by leaving early, backing out of a joint communique and taking aim at Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau. The SCO meeting in China at the same time, meanwhile, set what the China Daily newspaper said was a good example for multilateral cooperation, offering a “new vision” for a more just and equitable world. “Against the backdrop of rising unilateralism and anti-globalisation, the SCO’s opposition to trade protectionism in any form is especially encouraging,” said the Englishlanguage daily in an editorial. In a separate piece, the newspaper made the case for a united front against Trump after the G7 debacle.

India Set to Miss Key Target for Japanbacked Bullet Train Project India is set to miss a December deadline to acquire land for a Japan-backed $17 billion bullet train project following protests by fruit growers, government officials said, likely delaying one of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’s most ambitious projects. Modi’s office is now monitoring

the project week-to-week, as Indian officials seek to reassure Tokyo that the hurdles can be overcome through intense negotiations with sapota and mango growers in the western state of Maharashtra. Protests, backed by local politicians, have flared up in recent months against attempts to secure sections of a 108-km (67-mile) stretch, which is around one-fifth of the entire bullet train corridor connecting Mumbai with Ahmedabad, the largest commercial city in Modi’s home state of Gujarat. Purav said he would sell his land only if at least one of his two unemployed sons was promised a government job.

Rising Supply Results in Oil Price Falls Oil prices fell recently as concerns about surging US output and falling demand in China led to JP Morgan cutting its price forecast. In the past three weeks, prices have declined from three-year highs as the market has contended with supply concerns. On Friday, oil prices came under pressure after data suggested Chinese demand was waning and concerns lingered about growing US output. JP Morgan cut its 2018 crude forecast for WTI by $3 to $62.20 a barrel. The bank said geopolitical tensions and lingering risks of supply disruptions may push prices higher during the second half of 2018. It expects prices will head lower late in the year, and remain capped in 2019. The futures contracts dipped after the forecast was issued, and then pared losses. China’s May crude oil imports eased away from a record high hit the previous month, customs data showed, with state-run refineries entering planned maintenance.

MISSION

Green Top Sino Group is working in collaboration with Hong Chi Association to support the less privileged through the adoption of urban farming Writer: Phoebe Calver

I

n accordance with its corporate social responsibility and promotion of sustainability, the Sino Group has initiated Mission Green Top, an innovative programme that combines urban farming, supporting the less privileged and engaging the broader community. The project began 10 years ago at Skyline Tower, a grade A office building in the vibrant commercial district of Kowloon Bay. Through collaboration with Hong Chi Association, a local NGO, its members are hired to care for the garden, where

14

produce is regularly harvested, and sold to tenants of the building at a scheduled marketplace at the tower. The proceeds generated are channelled to Hong Chi Association, and tenants are also encouraged to share with Hong Chi Association members on gardening experiences and tips. During the past 10 years, 12 trainees and more than 3,500 tenants have participated in this meaningful deed and more than 1,000 kilograms of vegetables have been harvested, generating more than HK$2 million of sales for Hong Chi Association.

In celebration of this meaningful milestone, a kick-off ceremony heralding a series of festivities was held, officiated by Mr Sunny Yeung, Executive Director and Convenor of the Group’s Sustainability Committee. The ceremony was enthusiastically supported by the government, Hong Chi Association, tenants and respected partners. Officiating guests included: Mr Vincent M K Liu, JP, Deputy Secretary of the Environment Bureau (Energy and Sustainable Development Branch); Mr Edwin Lam, PDSM, General Secretary of Hong Chi Association; Ms Skye Chan, Ambassador of Hong Kong Associations; Mr Wai-To Law and Mr Hon-Man Cheng,

trainee representatives of Hong Chi Association; Dr Rebecca Lee, the first female explorer having visited Mount Everest, the South Pole and the North Pole; Mr David Tse, Chairman of King of the King Group and Mr Stefan Ulrich, Finance Director of METRO Sourcing International Limited, both having lent great support to Mission Green Top and other green programmes. “I would like to commend and congratulate the team on this important milestone,” remarked Mr Daryl Ng, Deputy Chairman of Sino Group. “Mission Green Top combines urban farming, supporting the less privileged and engaging the community. It breathes meaningful life into the rooftop space, turning it into a flourishing garden. This multifaceted programme brings benefits to our tenants as well as the community. It highlights what we strive to achieve with our CSR efforts -- working with our people, partners and customers to make our community a better place to live and work.”

A win-win green path for all

The Mission Green Top project brings green inspiration to commercial buildings. The 1,000 square foot roof area at Skyline Tower has been transformed into an organic farm with verdant plants and colourful flowers which tenants can refresh every time they visit the rooftop garden. The organic farm has been designed and cared for by Hong Chi Association members in conjunction with the Sino Green team. They take care of the full farming cycle, from preparing the field, to planting seeds, tending the crops and harvesting. Trainees are able to visit the garden once a week to irrigate plants, remove weeds and apply organic fertilisers, on sunny or rainy days. A wide variety of plants are grown, including seasonal plants such as Romaine lettuce, basil, beetroot, tomato, sweet potato and radish; herbs include lavender and rosemary.

In addition to learning horticulture, Hong Chi Association members acquire etiquette and social skills under the tutelage of instructors. During the past decade, 12 trainees have been hired for the programme since launch, and half of them have found jobs in the open market. Mr Sunny Yeung, Executive Director of Sino Group and Convenor of the Group’s Sustainability Committee, who initiated the project in 2008, recalled fondly: “Mission Green Top, launched 10 years ago, has become a catalyst for other similar environmental projects. The pots represent the great work done by Hong Chi Association over the past 10 years, the big heart of our tenants and the collective contribution from the Group. In addition to supporting the community, our people benefit from supporting those in need

ASIA too as we have seen personal growths in Hong Chi Association members as well as our staff.” Mr Edwin Lam, PDSM, General Secretary of Hong Chi Association, expressed his appreciation at the ceremony: “The Mission Green Top project has given a full play of our members’ talents. Gardening, which requires patience and regular cycles, is manageable for trainees with mild to moderate intellectual disability. Trainees’ communication skills, concentration, and EQ have significantly improved after joining the project.”

A greener future for all

To further promote green living, Sino Group announced the launch of Mission Green Academy, a structured programme to share green knowledge. Green-minded families will be recruited as Mission Green Ambassadors to spread the messages to residential areas, workplaces and the broader community. Shortlisted families will join a two-day-one-night camp at Hong Kong Gold Coast Hotel in August, 2018, during which will they learn green tips,

go on visits and create an upcycled art piece for education and promotion. Yeung concludes: “Mission Green Top helps raise awareness of green living and social inclusion. It is well received by our people, tenants and the community, it will continue to sow the seeds for a green and caring environment for all. We look forward to many more milestones in the years to come.”

Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC)

SINCE FRUITION, THE Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation’s (MMPRC) mission has been to single-handedly promote quality and sustainable growth in the tourism industry of the Maldives. The Corporation has fostered a well utilised and financially healthy private sector industry, enabling it to deliver long-term economic, social and cultural benefits for the people of the Maldives. At the same time, it is contributing to enhancements within the Maldives’ unspoiled marine environment, benefitting the population and visitors alike. Acting Managing Director of

MMPRC, Haris Mohamed, describes the many ways the country is developing and its extensive plans for the future. Asia Outlook (AsO): Since inception, how has MMPRC developed and progressed in terms of its key objectives and the messages it tries to get across? Haris Mohamed (HM): We were branded under the slogan ‘Maldives… the sunny side of life’ in 2003, and since its commencement it has been successfully promoted in that manner. In order to approach the different market segments, in 2005 we launched focused taglines to promote the

diversified tourism activities and experiences that are available in the Maldives. These taglines included, 'Maldives... the romantic side of life', 'the colourful side of life', 'the spiritual side of life', 'the fun side of life', and finally, 'the Maldivian side of life'. AsO: To this end, how would you say the Maldives has developed in recent years as a business travel hub and what are the key reasons behind its growing appeal? HM: Over the years MMPRC - in line with the Government manifesto - set up a strategic marketing plan in order to achieve the objectives that have allowed the successful developments

we see today. To this day an exponential growth has been recorded during recent years, with an increase of 1,389,542 tourist arrivals from all over the world by the end of 2017. To highlight these developments, the Government is undergoing a major project to expand the main international airport to accommodate the increase in airlines and flight frequency. AsO: Taking a more general industry stance, how would you evaluate the tourism sector in the Maldives now compared to its condition when the Company began? HM: During the 45 years of tourism in the Maldives, we have witnessed an incredibly successful growth of the overall industry. Due to the fact that the country is scattered over a thousand islands, accessibility has been a challenge.

Moreover, the biggest international brands have been welcomed into the country over the years, which has led to the attraction of the niche luxury market we welcome today. These developments have contributed to the overall growth of the tourism industry in the Maldives. MMPRC industry, the Government is working towards infrastructural developments as well as the introduction of new products that will cater to the changing trends. As such the most recent products to be introduced include an ice skating rink which was opened in Jumeirah Vittaveli this year; following that will be the new underwater hotel residence in Conrad Maldives Rangali Island. It is innovative marketing ideas such as these that take the industry to a whole new level, providing an exciting glimpse of what is yet to come for the country. With the new developments every year, the Government is placing emphasis on eco-friendly practices in every property. Individual resorts are also implementing new strategies to adopt environmentally friendly alternatives, promoting sustainable

tourism in the Maldives. In a recent bid to go green, Cocoon Maldives have lowered the use of water packaged in plastic bottles, to environmentally friendly water bottles in hopes of reducing the amount of disposed waste within the resort. AsO: Finally, looking forward, if we were to speak again in three-five year’s time, what progress and development would you hope and expect to be able to report back, both in regards to the MMPRC as an entity, and in regards to the business travel industry in the Maldives as a whole? HM: The Government together with major players in the industry will work towards the enhancement of sustainable tourism and open doors for further developments in the future. As one of the world’s largest economic sectors and the majority of that success coming from tourism, we believe that in the future the industry will deliver enormous

Transport Links ENTERING THE MALDIVES is remarkably easy, with a free 30day visa issued upon arrival into the country providing you are able to produce a valid travel document, a ticket out and proof of sufficient funds for your stay. Despite its beauty and worldrenowned tranquillity, finding your way around the Maldives can prove to be a stressful experience when left unplanned. Generally you will find that travel in the country takes three forms, by boat, sea planes (air taxis) and private yachts; when it comes to the Maldives, the boat will become your new taxi. It is advisable to plan well in advance if you intend to leave your resort during your stay, with air taxis and boats preferring not to operate at night. This is also applicable upon your arrival at the airport, as you may need to consider booking a night in the airport hotel at Hulhule if you are staying at a distant resort.

32

‘Although private transfers are expensive, they are also an option to consider and something to discuss with either your resort or travel agent’ Although private transfers are expensive, they are also an option to consider and something to discuss with either your resort or travel agent. Transportation by water takes on four forms, which include public ferries, private ferries, scheduled speedboats and chartered speedboats, most of which are targeted at tourists. The public ferries – although cheap – are infrequent, so try to plan well in advance if you decide to use that method of travel.

or hundreds of years, the concept of Papua New Guinea becoming a tourism hotspot, let alone a hotbed for international business travellers, was unthinkable, but while large parts of the country retain rituals and traditions oft-associated with centuries of old, pockets of the multi-island nation are becoming some of the most exotic and exciting places to visit. Driven by its motto, ‘unity in diversity’ it is this diversification into the modern day which has helped to kick-start more concerted realms of economic prevalence and tourism prowess; and for the lucky few who

have been able to capitalise on the opportunity so far, the stunning scenery and hospitable people that await have made such a trip more than worthwhile. Epitomised by the growth of its capital, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea is one of the most culturally enigmatic countries in the world, boasting 852 languages across its more than seven million people. However, it is the country’s mystery and intrigue which have largely put it on the map, with massive parts still untouched by civilisation or even explored fully. “Lying just south of the equator, 160 kilometres north of Australia, Papua New Guinea is part of a great

The Business End

Port Moresby

S I T U A T E D O N T H E Pacific Ring of Fire, the mainland of the country is the eastern half of the New Guinea island where Port Moresby and the country’s other large towns are located. By and large though, the country is divided into nine convenient reachable regions: Southern Papua New Guinea, Southwestern Papua New Guinea, Madang-Morobe, Highlands, Sepik, Milne Bay, New Britain, New Ireland and Manus, and Bougainville. And despite challenging climactic conditions across each of these areas, improvement from a business development and FDI perspective is evident. The unique customs of Papua New Guinea are now being

36

softened by Western quirks to form a mutual respect between the two; thus paving the way for more and more opportunities for international expansion into the country. So from this business perspective, the outlook for PNG is bright. Despite being considered for LEDC status as little as 11 years ago, the International Monetary Fund has since described the country’s economy as “buoyant” and “stable”, with it now being earmarked as a developing entity: the sixth fastest in the world in 2011, in fact. Endowed with a rich plethora of natural resources and mining opportunities, it comes as no surprise that the majority of business travellers

come from this international mining domain. Meanwhile, for the more humble areas of society, agriculture and farming also remain pivotal to the country’s sustainability. Underpinning this diverse array of fiscal contributors is the PNG Government’s long-term Vision 2050 which emphasises the need for further strings to the country’s economic bow. Striving to avoid the backlash that regions such as West Africa have endured to their own resource-rich booms, the necessity to spread the risk in the future will not only make the country’s economy more sustainable, but it will also lend itself more wholly to the business travel sector too.

PNG is the perfect place to explore for those seeking adventure

A S T H E C O U N T R Y ’ S tourist infrastructure continues to improve, the routes and methods to enter the nation do too. Most foreign nationals who now wish to enter Papua New Guinea are required to obtain a visa, but many can do so, for free, for a six month period. Most EU countries, South America and Oceania are included within this ruling, while there are of course opportunities to obtain visas at a PNG embassy for many other countries. Once the logistics have been arranged and the necessary jabs have been completed, transport becomes all the more complex however. That’s not to say complex in a bad way, mind you. Anyone who truly wants to explore PNG to the full are presumably looking for a little adventure in any case, and with the country’s tricky, undulating,

50

mountainous terrain, adventure is just what you’ll get. Bypassing mountains entirely, air travel is the most popular and important - mode of transport for both personnel and freight and even the two major cities - Port Moresby and Lae - can only be bridged via the skies. Located near the former, Jacksons International Airport provides the primary hub for travelling into the country, which you can do so via Air Niugini, Philippine Airlines, Qantas or Virgin Australia. Once in and settled though, there are choices to be made as to the best way to explore the islands. Land, air and sea are all viable options, although the former of the three is quite specific to the Highlands Highway which begins in Lae and connects to Mt Hagen, the coast and Madang. From there, the roads do fork

and continue, but for all the effort that goes into plotting your route, it may be simpler to either take to the skies, or at least look to public transport to carry the burden for you. PMVs (public motor vehicles) and busses are the most common way to travel for locals, but to make sure, it is strongly advisable to gain advice from your hotel or lodge staff as to the best strategy. On the water, numerous ferries are available to interconnect the various port towns and this is still a credible choice, but as has always been the way in PNG, it’s usually advisable to travel as the crow flies. Nearly all major settlements are built around an airstrip and - to be honest - missing out on the views that can be encapsulated from soaring above the country’s terrain would be to not get the full PNG experience.

When seeking a slightly more traditional mode of transport, the city’s double-decker trams have been servicing Hong Kong for more than a century, and although they are perhaps a slightly more bumpy and rustic way to travel, for a flat rate of $2.30 you have the opportunity to see a lot more of the city and get in a little sightseeing. Busses and taxis are also a perfectly good option for finding your way around Hong Kong, however, it is important to remember that those options will only be as practical as traffic will allow, so be sure to afford yourself plenty of extra time when faced with a busy schedule to avoid any hold-ups.

One of the highest residential towers in London is currently under construction in Canary Wharf. The 239-metre skyscraper, developed by CPL Chalegrove Ltd and designed by London-based architectural practice Squire & Partner, is set to become a new landmark in London. The façade concept was the work of ALT Limited, one of the world’s leading façade consultants, whilst Schüco further developed the details of this unitised high-rise. The Schüco UCC 65 unitised façade system had to be modified as structurally bonded sliding doors form an integral part of the unitised façade. Outstanding work is being carried out by the Croatian/German façade fabricator KFK International, which is ahead of schedule thanks to the efficient modular design feature of the Schüco façade. All of the quality tests were passed successfully at the first attempt. The tower represents an outstanding collaborative effort by all those involved on the project: the client, the architect, the façade consultant ALT Limited, the façade fabricator KFK International and the system provider Schüco International KG. Through the combination of thoughtful design, spectacular views and world-class amenities, the ultimate living space has been created in one of London’s fastest growing areas. With Squire and Partners as the design architect, ALT designed the façade to be a fully-unitised system, complete with argon-filled, laminated insulated glass units (IGU); corrugated aluminium profiled metal spandrel panel, argon-filled laminated IGU sliding panels and a monolithic glass sliding door. Despite facing challenging design requirements throughout the project, ALT was able to customise its designs in order to attain the intent required by the developer.

Perhaps one of the most challenging aspects in terms of façade design for ALT was the north-south façade which features a slanting glass wall, including operable windows at the bottom of the unit. In comparison to the conventional flat and fullyunitised systems, the slanting glass required a thorough design of the vertical framing which included connectors or sleeves to make the panel work as one unit. Although the Company’s history is firmly cemented in the Asian region, it also has strong connections in the far east where ALT provides services to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Egypt and Qatar, as well as Italy, the UK, the US, Argentina and Chile. “Despite the fact that we are independent and work towards remaining un-biased in the market, we also recognise that it is important to familiarise ourselves with all local manufacturers, suppliers and installers as buying local materials is

ASIA uring its relatively short time in the industry to date, Meinhardt Light Studio has adapted a strategy based around honesty with clients at all times in order to achieve the successful completion of projects. The Company came to fruition in 2009 as a way to complement the Group structure in the form of a multidisciplinary consulting firm, beginning as a humble one-man show that has developed into a 20-designer strong entity. In its present day form the Company has three separate offices, and has quadrupled its workload since its doors opened almost 10 years ago. Despite its excellent achievements in such a short space of time, Shaun Teo, Associate Director at Meinhardt Light Studio is insistent: “Success has not come easily for us, especially when it comes to opening ourselves up for work in new markets. With thanks to exceptional training provided for our designers, we are able to consistently achieve the results required by our clients and do so with their compliments.” The wider Meinhardt Group is a global multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy, comprising more than 4,500 staff across 45 offices worldwide. The Group Chairman, Dr Nasim Shazad works closely with the Group Chief Executive Officer, Omar Shahzad to provide its subsidiaries with the required engineering consulting capabilities in civil and infrastructure, planning and urban development, structural engineering, mechanical, project management, water and environmental factors. Meinhardt Light Studio forms a specialist segment of the larger Group, with dedicated capabilities that include façade engineering, environmentally sustainable designs, fire performance engineering, integrated design management, specialist lighting and mission critical facility design.

Teo adds: “With that in mind, we are careful not to over design on a project, which means we are able to save time, energy and the budget of our clients on our projects. “However, before we reach this stage it is important to understand both the branding and outcome that our client needs, as well as what they

Good Healthcare The Bridge to

JMS Singapore has merged intrinsic Japanese values of lean manufacturing and technology-based progression to evolve a healthcare industry that calls for care and consideration Writer: Matthew Staff Project Manager: Callam Waller

volving under different guises and stewardship since its genesis in 1965 the JMS Singapore Pte Ltd that exists today continues to thrive as a pivotal bridge across the country’s healthcare landscape. Helping Singapore mature into a first world healthcare domain, JMS’ acumen across areas of medical understanding and technological innovation has led to similarly reputed

significance in the wider Asian market. “JMS Singapore was eventually established with its current manufacturing plant, manufacturing solely for Japan initially; transferring technology and a high-quality work culture to Singapore to enable JMS Singapore to likewise manufacture to first world standards,” recalls and introduces Sales and Marketing Director, Samuel Soh. “Eventually, blood bag manufacturing was transferred to Singapore, the mainstay

L

of manufacturing in JMS Singapore. “Over the course of transfers, JMS Singapore eventually obtained from our parent company, JMS Japan, competencies in production, engineering and product development, quality control and assurance, and sales; firming up the foundations which allowed us to penetrate global markets.” In 1994, JMS Batam was established as a full subsidiary of the Company and by then, it was clear that a global

R

acceptance of the JMS brand was formulating, and international demand was rising. “JMS then moved a whole range of medical device manufacturing operations to JMS Batam, and with an established product development team, the business modified and improved these products according to the requirements of the respective International markets,” Soh adds. In the present day, such progression has culminated in three main business

ASIA units across blood management, haemodialysis and general hospital products; leveraging a never-ending research & development function that ensures continuous improvement across each strand. Small nuances and innovations are the order of the day, as epitomised by its ultra-sharp, high-quality venepuncture needles, and equally market-leading medical plastics. “The common perception is that products like these are such standard and commoditised technologies that there is little differentiation between manufacturers. Long-time users of these medical disposables, on the other hand, will have much to say about that,” Soh explains. “A healthy blood donor who is getting 16G venepunctures would find their 100th venepuncture as uncomfortable as his or her first. But using JMS needles significantly reduces the amount of pain experienced by these donors; while, concurrently, the plastic formulation used for our tubes and bags have been improved over and over again to give medical staff ease of handling through developing high levels of kink resistance and tube firmness.” Additional product suites have been evolved in each business unit, to better suit customers’ comprehensive array of needs. Soh sums up: “JMS Singapore is a globally-oriented, fully-integrated, world-class manufacturing plant, providing state-of-the-art healthcare products. A key strength of our setup is the ability to provide a range of customisable devices pertaining to the needs of our users. We listen attentively to the voices of our customers, observe their use of the product and subsequently develop a comprehensive range of products that are able to serve unique requirements.”

Changing business environments

JMS Singapore has been able to replicate the wider JMS Group’s strong reputation for productivity over the years, focusing especially on areas of operational excellence and manufacturing efficiencies. Initiating with the use of a lean, Kaizen-based ‘Best Production System’, the Company’s ability to enhance material flow and reduce operating costs results in consistency and sustainability that are synonymous with Japanese engineering principles. “As such, JMS Singapore handles changing business environments with an adaptiveness built upon these values and has implemented improvement activities over the years in areas such as lean control, continuous research and development to improve product specifications and production processes; while training and retraining staff to emphasise the importance of these values.” In an industry that is already moving towards automation, especially in Singapore, the Company is ahead of the curve and reacting accordingly; all the while placing patients’ health as a top priority. The commitment to

L T D

quality was instilled since the inception of JMS Singapore, becoming ISO 9000 accredited in the early days before it became important across global markets. And likewise today, JMS maintains the latest standards of ISO compliance with EN ISO13485:2016. “Building on these foundational beliefs, JMS has moved forward with engineering safety designs or features in our devices to prevent accidental injuries to patients and healthcare workers,” Soh continues. “The ‘safety’ concept was made available in all our core products such as arterial venous fistula needles, blood bags, nutritional systems, and in new products like safety connectors and drug mixing devices.” Currently, JMS Singapore is exploring new biological compatible materials for its product lines, taking into account stringent chemical, biological, mechanical and physical tests that all new unveilings must go through. Consequently, the Company has formulated multiple proprietary materials that facilitate biocompatible and manufacturable medical devices. “Going forward, we continue to seek new innovations in medical materials that will enable us to offer greater value to the industry,” Soh enthuses.

Health & safety

And while its portfolio increases, so too does JMS’ footprint. The establishment of JMS Healthcare Philippines in 2012 will be complemented by JMS Healthcare Thailand in 2018, contributing fresh production lines, capacities, technologies, innovations, practices, and modernity. These plants, and simultaneous ventures alongside manufacturing partners, also facilitate easier access into numerous Asian markets, such as Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand where JMS will have direct contact with end users, understanding their needs and answering their requirements.

Proactive expansion also lends to foreseeing industry trends ahead of time, as is being seen through developments in robotics, remote monitoring, analytics and the rise of occupational health. “Occupational health & safety has become a huge topic of importance considering the risks faced by healthcare workers when dealing with diseases, infections and contamination,” Soh affirms.

“The long-term experience of each healthcare worker is highly valuable and the last thing a medical institution would want is to lose these people to health risks, resignations and even worse, diseases caught from patients due to cross-infection. “On this front, JMS Singapore has been developing a whole range of safety innovations that can sheath needles immediately upon withdrawal from the patient, protecting all personnel from possible needle prick injuries. Our parent company also owns a range of closed-system products which allow drugs to be mixed or infused without getting exposed to the air. These products (such as NeoShield, a closed-system drug transfer device) would greatly reduce the poisoning risk faced by healthcare workers, and we are assessing how we can bring these innovations to other markets, prioritising the health & safety of healthcare workers in the midst of their work.”

110

Automation and robotics are two key trends being adopted at present

Maintaining high standards

While the final, and most pressing trend addresses the aforementioned veering towards automation, this doesn’t make JMS’ approach to personnel enrichment any less considered. Soh notes: “Our approach to human resources employs a mix of training in best practices to equip and retain employees. JMS Singapore employs an active workforce of more than 600 dedicated and skilled employees, and more than 2,500 employees in our subsidiary plant in Batam. We hire a diversified workforce of both local and others from the region, bolstered by

functional experts from our parent company in Japan.” To make the most of human resources, JMS has invested efforts to design optimal processes and technologies to enable all employees to discharge their job functions competently. The Company believes that technology or talent alone will not enable innovation and growth. Instead, it is the harmonious combination of both factors which allows the Company to continuously improve, each side of the fence set up to harness the advantages of the other. As a result, strong levels of employee retention are achieved, and

staff fulfilment is prevalent across each plant. Being an employer, provider, and partner of choice is then compounded by an attribute that no competitor can contend with: longevity. “Having a brand that is as old as JMS Singapore gives the Company a lot of goodwill to work with,” Soh says. “It is not a decade of reliability that we are building upon when we reach out to customers, but more than half a century of it. Our longstanding brand reputation and product performance has created a brand image of high quality and reliability, and it is on these values that we continue to build our business.” Inevitably, this provides a perfect platform from which to build in the future, in an industry where stagnancy is not an option. Soh concludes: “Across emerging markets in Asia, there has been a drive towards universal healthcare. That is a good start for the challenges in serving the healthcare needs of the region, but a large part of healthcare productivity is to prevent recurrent diseases, increase speed of recovery and protect

ASIA

Innovation and safety goes hand-in-hand

hospital staff and other patients from unnecessarily contracting diseases. On these fronts, JMS aspires to be a part of this healthcare restructuring, emphasising the importance of good quality medical products and therefore an advancement of the quality of healthcare across Asia. “To that end, we will remain stalwarts of our values, maintaining high standards of product integrity and enabling patients to access reliable and safe healthcare products.”

ASIA ncorporated in Malaysia in 2003 as a whollyowned Bumiputra entity, Setegap Ventures Petroleum Sdn Bhd (SVP) has evolved over the past 15 years to become a one-stop centre for the oil & gas sector, providing an almost unrivalled array of well solutions to a loyal base of customers. Initiating back then as the only Malaysian owned and operated service provider for the upstream industry, its range of pumping and well services, well intervention solutions, production enhancements, and upstream drilling offerings have ensured longevity at the head of the sector. Always looking to diversify and expand its portfolio, SVP in 2008 enhanced its scope of operations to include CTU services as well, further demonstrating its flexibility and entrepreneurial flair in an industry not always blessed with such a luxury. “As SVP focuses on the core business of well pumping, CTU and cementing services, it is rapidly making its expertise known in Southeast Asia, with new markets also being opened in the Middle East,” SVP affirms on its website. CVP’s Chief Operating Officer, Mohd Zulhaizan Bin Mohd Noor spoke to Asia Outlook in 2017 about the Company’s evolution and constant search for continuous improvement: “As the need to increase production from existing wells became increasingly important, especially during the oil price downturn, it opened the door for SVP to increase our capability and fleet from just pumping to coil tubing, de-sander services and production enhancement solutions. “The integrity of a well is also crucial in order to ensure the lifespan of the well, thus SVP now also offers cementing services.” And now that the downturn is beginning to form a more positive trajectory, the Company is better

Strong core

Over a relatively short period of time, SVP has cemented its reputation as an organisation run by savvy businessminded and technical individuals who have helped to develop the Company into the reputed, fast-responding, time sensitive and innovative entity that is seen today. “SVP believes in doing what we do best, and then expanding from that,” Mohd Noor said in last year’s interview. “We develop a strong fundamental, technical business, and then expand from that strong core. “SVP also believes that the success of the Company depends on highly skilled staff, so there is a strong emphasis on programmes to help further develop our workforce.” The culminating result is an almost 70 percent market share dominance in the East Malaysian market, and

a further 50 percent stronghold in Peninsular Malaysia, incorporating the entire scope of the business. And from this emphatic position, the Company can - and has been - looking to migrate further afield and replicate its triumph throughout Southeast Asia. Compounding such a proactive approach to continuous improvement, its new CTU and de-sander units, as well as investments into new cementing equipment, have helped increase provision to the market once again, while a new, bigger warehouse in Labuan has helped to facilitate the Company’s own rapid growth.

Versatile and nimble

Two major CTU contracts have been won over the past few years as a consequence of the Company’s turnkey offering, bringing SVP closer to its goal of becoming not just a local leader, but also a regional and global player of repute. “With that in mind, we welcome

talented and committed individuals to drive the Company towards realising not just our vision, but the journey towards it,” the Company affirmed. “Our diverse and multi-talented family is a testament to the culture we inculcate at SVP.” Achieving more than two million manhours without a lost-time injury by July, 2017 is testament to the commitment the Company makes to each and every employee; while

creating opportunities for local artisans is a large part of this employment focus, where they can then be deployed at bases in Kuala Lumpur, Kemaman, Labuan, Miri and Kota Kinabalu. Further still, the same ethos is applied to its supply chain too, where social responsibility shines through and local business partnerships are entered into to enforce its own internal values of cost-effectiveness, reliability, efficiency and good business ethics. “SVP is looking at how to increase efficiencies moving forward, in terms of operations and in trying to increase our margins,” Mohd Noor concluded. “With a small-size structure, SVP has the advantage of making fast decisions and can be more versatile and nimble in challenging demanding markets. “From this point, the future will also see us diversify our business in terms of products and territories, looking to be on par with other traditional players with the same scope of services.”

THE 2ND ANNUAL Global Hotels and Resorts is a two-day conference being hosted on 24-25 September, 2018 at the GEM Center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. With economic growth topping six percent annually for more than 15 years, it’s no surprise that Vietnam’s cities are flourishing more than ever before. From Da Nang to Hai Phong, and from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, tourism is booming along with the country’s economic fortunes. Attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) has always been a key part of Vietnam’s external economic affairs. The conference focuses on Vietnam as an emerging market for luxury hotels and resorts. Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) has come up with a masterplan as Vietnam Tourism Development 2020

vision 2030 that includes boosting investment for tourism development and tourism management. They aim to increase GDP by 10 percent by 2020. This plan also highlights an insight into the development of seven tourism zones with specific tourism products: 46 national tourist areas; 41 national tourist spots; 12 tourist cities and other key tourist spots. This two-day conference gives a knowledge sharing platform to the delegates and sponsors to network with the speakers who are the Government officials. This is the platform where government authorities and industry leaders will get an opportunity to network. Some of the key highlights to be discussed include: • Identifying the significant market trends in the competitive hospitality market • Understanding the needs of a diversifying market and discussing ways to tackle it • FDI opportunities in Vietnam in 2018
