The 2017 Next List Hiko Mitsuzuka (@TheFirstEcho) offers a peek at the 10 things we’ll be obsessing over in the new year.

1. DEAR EVAN HANSEN

2. INTO THE WATER by Paula Hawkins

Meet your new Broadway obsession. This contemporary musical centers around a socially awkward 17-year-old (the magnificent Ben Platt from Pitch Perfect) who becomes popular after a misunderstanding with another troubled student snowballs into a web of lies. With unforgettable music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (the guys behind the tunes in La La Land) and dynamic direction from Michael Greif (Rent, Next to Normal), Evan Hansen is a stirring, heartbreaking, and modern production that showcases the dangerous trappings of social media and its resulting social anxieties. Remember this hashtag: #youwillbefound.

Everyone and their mother couldn’t put down Hawkins’s The Girl on the Train, and we’re guessing fans will want to snatch up this suspenseful follow-up about a single mom who’s found dead at the bottom of a river. Line up the suspects! (Available in May)

3. SNATCHED Amy Schumer’s big-screen follow-up to 2015’s successful Trainwreck finds her sharing the screen with comedic icon Goldie Hawn. Together, they play a mother-daughter duo that gets caught up in some criminal activity down in South America. We’re getting some major Outrageous Fortune-meets-Romancing the Stone vibes from the trailer, and we cannot wait for Mother’s Day (when it hits theaters). #141 issue - BELLOmag.com

4. THE UNTITLED BETTY WHO ALBUM The Aussie singer-songwriter, who wooed us with Take Me When You Go back in 2014, is prepping to release a sophomore album which will include “Human Touch” the dance track that has been warming us through the winter. Expect more electro-pop gems about love and heartbreak.

5. STAR WARS EPISODE VIII Rogue One: A Star Wars Story only reminded us of how awesome this resurgence in the franchise has been, and we, along with millions of others, highly anticipate the next installment, directed by Rian Johnson (Brick). PS - we hear Carrie Fisher had already filmed her scenes before her untimely death, so expect us to tear up when Leia appears on screen one last time.

7. THE FINAL SEASON OF PLEASE LIKE ME For those of us who couldn’t catch the fourth and final season of Josh Thomas’s heartbreaking, adorable, hysterical, and warm comedy during its initial run, rejoice: it just became available on Hulu! How will it all end? We’re guessing bittersweet.

6. BACKSTREET BOYS IN VEGAS First there was Britney...then J.Lo...and now, the seminal, turn-of-the-millennium boy band is heading to Las Vegas for a new residency at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. The best-selling boy band of all time (with over 130 million albums sold worldwide) is heading to the Strip to kick off an exclusive headlining show, Backstreet Boys: Larger Than Life, inside The AXIS beginning March 1.

9. THE BEST OF ADAM SHARP by Graeme Simsion

8. THAT NEW SHONDA RHIMES DRAMA Last we heard, the creator of Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy was working on a Romeo and Juliet SEQUEL called Still Star-Crossed, but now we’ve learned that the period drama is undergoing a title change. Whatever it is, we’re sure it’s going to deliver.

The author of The Rosie Project is at it again, this time with a heartwarming novel about a 50-year-old man who reconnects with his one true love. (Available May 2)

10. ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING TURNS 30 Finally, we’re going to take a trip back to the 80s this summer and rewatch this classic starring Elisabeth Shue about one babysitter’s unforgettable night in Chicago (forget that insufferable Disney remake from last year). Fingers crossed they release a special anniversary Blu-ray with new features and interviews with the cast. 7

BELLO AT THE MOVIES Hiko Mitsuzuka (@TheFirstEcho) reviews the exciting tribute to the unsung heroines behind NASA’s historic launch of the 1960s.

Hidden Figures

T

he great Space Race of the 1960s, as history books will explain, was a time filled with hope, innovation, and bravery. Hope amongst the American population, excited at the prospect of sending a man into the stars. Innovation surrounding the technology used to accomplish such a Herculean task. And bravery required of the pilots who were lined up to be the first human to travel where no man has gone before.

But little does history tell of the individuals who were instrumental in making all of that happen. See, Hidden Figures refers to both the unsung heroines who helped NASA scientists execute the perfect launch and the missing factors of a very large mathematical equation only a rare, intelligent mind could solve. Taraji P. Henson is that rare mind at the center of director Theodore Melfi’s sharply executed film that pays tribute to Katherine G. Johnson, the real-life beautiful mind behind the intricate formula that helped astronaut John Glenn orbit the planet in 1962. Henson is flanked by Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae, playing Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, respectively, fellow math mavens (or “human computers”) who also played key roles in NASA’s historic launch. Together, they are the women who rose through the ranks of the Langley Research Center during a time when segregation was a harsh, widespread reality and the notion of a highly accomplished African-American woman was unheard of. While the film dips into the personal lives and struggles of Katherine, Dorothy, and Mary, it also attempts to service its other characters, namely the other (white) players who figure into this true story. Kevin Costner is Al Harrison, the gruff head of the Space Task Group, blown away by Katherine’s an#141 issue - BELLOmag.com

alytical talents. (In one overly earnest and obligatory scene involving a bathroom sign, it’s established that he’s a supporter of equal rights and not just a stiff white collar determined to beat the Russians.) Then there’s Kirsten Dunst as a stodgy, semi-icy bureaucrat who stands in the way of Dorothy’s promotion (a thankless role). And Jim Parsons demonstrates his knack for stink eye as Paul Stafford, a colleague of Katherine’s who doesn’t warm up to the idea of sharing his work with a woman, let alone a black woman.

9

But Hidden Figures clearly belongs to Henson, who, with her perfect posture, horn-rimmed glasses, and intellectual passion, manages to make Katherine more than just a whiz with numbers. (Writers Allison Shroeder and Melfi do an admirable job rounding her out.) She’s a loving mother and daughter as well as a widow, a fact that allows her to flirt with Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), an army officer she meets on campus. It’s a great enough role that may have earned an actress of her caliber an Oscar nod in another time and place —

twenty years ago, back when the politics of awards season was an entirely different animal. Dorothy and Mary are also given a few moments to shine; you can’t help rooting for these women and celebrating their accomplishments by the time the closing credits roll. Hidden Figures is a pleasant throwback that works, a feel-good, true story for a time when too many of us are inundated with feel-bad, fake-news. RATING: 4/5

THE GIRLFRIENDS’ GETAWAY GUIDE TO... The SoCal Coast Having returned from a Girlfriend Getaway (GG) to end all getaways, STEFANIE NOVIK offers where to stay, eat, and play while cutting a swath through the Southern California coast.

W

e all learned in school that animals travel in groups -- a herd of cows, a flock of sheep, a pack of dogs – for reasons of safety, survival, and comfort. Humans, specifically of the female variety, travel in packs for similar reasons, but mostly because it’s a lot more fun – and nobody likes to drink alone. Which is why we women invented The Girlfriend Getaway.

DESTINATION #1: SANTA YNEZ This region may not be as famous as its northern siblings Napa and Sonoma, but it’s a formidable wine country destination in its own right. Less than 2 hours north of Los Angeles by car (or 30 minutes north of Santa Barbara), and providing some spectacular coastal scenery along the drive, the Santa Ynez Valley boasts some of California’s top vineyards – and restaurants to match. My girls and I opted to stay in Solvang, a charmingly quirky town designed to look and feel like Denmark. Though if you’ve ever been to the actual Denmark, you quickly realize you’re nowhere near the European city, but spending a day in “the unofficial Danish Capital in America” is officially a kick. The Landsby is largely considered the best of the in-town hotels with its Scandinavian aesthetic and elegant vibe, and we determined it was the best base camp for us. From the hotel, you can pretty much walk the whole town in an afternoon, stopping at all manner of cute shops and cafes, as well as attractions like the Hans Christian Andersen Museum and the sleeping Viking Holger Danske statue on Copenhagen Drive. Yes, they have both.

Take advantage of the beautiful weather with a long walk or a bike ride, and at the end of the day, reward your exercise efforts with a special meal at SY Kitchen. The ‘SY’ stands for Santa Ynez, obviously, but it could just as easily stand for ‘Super Yummy.’ There were nine of us for dinner at this rustic Italian eatery, which allowed for a taste of nearly the entire menu, and each dish was super yummy – the best minestrone in the history of vegetable soups; mussels in a savory broth that could melt your heart; truffle pizza that could melt your soul, and pasta perfection to rival anything in Italy. Suffice to say, it was a highlight of the trip.

DESTINATION #2: SANTA MONICA / WEST L.A.

to hang with some of my L.A. cohorts and sample a couple of new places that had recently showed up on my restaurant radar.

En route to Girlfriend Getaway #2 in San Diego county, I made a stop in Santa Monica (L.A. County) for a day

We gathered for the evening at the hip Viceroy Hotel on Ocean Avenue, a great place to hang your hat – and

Hit Paula’s Pancake House for a happy, high-carb breakfast to fuel your day, and then after you’ve had your fill of California Danish, head to any of the many nearby wineries. Many of them proudly advertise themselves as having been featured in the movie Sideways, so if a Hollywood stamp of approval enhances your enjoyment of the grape, you’ll be in heaven at any number of tasting rooms in Santa Ynez/Solvang or the adjacent Los Olivos for your wine-down pleasure: Brander Vineyard, Bridlewood, Sunstone, and Firestone are just a few. your carry-on bag – when you want to be close enough to the beach to stroll across the street to it and close enough to Third Street Promenade to not need an Uber to shlep your shopping haul back to your room. The hotel’s lobby is best described as “Victorian funky” with a reading room that looks like your parents’ den in the 70s. Eclectic is the décor here, but the real fun happens when you step outside to the poolside restaurant Cast, where

walls of plates, prettily strung tea lights, and cozy cabanas await. This is the perfect place for some intimate bonding over drinks and apps (think: jerk chicken meatball yakitori and wood-charred cauliflower). In the morning, we headed inland a bit to UCLA-adjacent Westwood in pursuit of a unicorn: a great meal at a restaurant attached to a movie theater. Turns out, the unicorn was real, and we found the Most Amazing Brunch Ever at the casual-cool Tuck Room Tavern. General Manager John Yuhico has done a stellar job of creating just

the right vibe – and just the right menu – to make Sundays a reason to say “Hallelujah!”…and maybe catch a flick afterwards. My gang and I tried everything from the glorious Brunch Burger and crispy latke fries to smoked salmon stuffed popovers and monkey bread babka. And let us not forget the crispy chicken waffles and crab cake Eggs Benedict – we proudly ordered a caviar “supplement” as well. The verdict on all of it, including our waiter Eddy: delicious! Beautifully prepared food, fresh ingredients, a lively mix of flavors, and attentive service, all added up to a stellar meal and a stellar experience.

14

DESTINATION #3 & #4: DEL MAR & LA JOLLA As soon as I could walk again (Can you say, “Stuffed to the gills?”), I got back on the road for the next full leg of my GG – to the tony town of Del Mar, where we settled in at the luxurious L’Auberge Del Mar. From the moment we drove up, ready to meet pals who’d flown in from the Midwest, this hotel met all our expectations. The elegant, beachy lobby set the tone for our stay; everything looked and felt fresh and clean, with the vaulted ceilings and glorious view of the Pacific, overlooked by the beautiful patio setting at Coastline, the hotel’s restaurant, which, we found out the next morning, serves a mean egg white frittata.

the little village of Del Mar with plenty of fun shopping and good restaurants within walking distance. The hotel’s staff is as accommodating as they come, always friendly and re-

laxed -- a nice enhancement to the already-perfect beach vibe created. Of special note nearby: Americana Restaurant, directly across the street, is THE place for breakfast; I’m still

dreaming about their never-tasted-anything-like-it oatmeal; and Poseidon, a seafood restaurant with a breathtaking ocean perch, where the moonlit view was matched only by the beauty of my steaming bowl of cioppino. Del Mar is about a 20-minute drive from the renowned Lodge at Torrey Pines, which is on the edge of Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve in La Jolla. This area is a hiker-biker-golfer paradise. None of us had clubs, or much of a swing, so we went with the hiking option, taking advantage of the endless trails and sweeping ocean vistas offered in the park. We ended our trek by continuing on foot to the Lodge for a late lunch – and a spectacular view of the golf course from the patio restaurant.

Zoo, which lived up to its reputation, but beware: this critter crawl will set you back 50 bucks in admission fees. We also made our way to the island of Coronado, a charming seaside community across the bay from San Diego. Highlights included lunch at Leroy’s Lounge (featuring a kick-ass burger and fries), followed by a sweet treat at

Moo Time Creamery, a local fave for homemade ice cream and wondrous waffle cones. (Mo’ moo, please!) Of course, the big lure in Coronado is the iconic Hotel Del Coronado, known by locals as The Del. Walking the expansive property, it’s easy to envision all the Hollywood stars who have graced its many rooms. The Del may have lost a bit of its luster since its heyday (the

The town of La Jolla itself is the place to go for scenic strolling and retail therapy. STEAK ROYAL Copenhagen’s backbone to fine Steak

WRITTEN BY JON NORRIS Discovering a small part of Scandinavia, was, in two words, joyous and magical. The city of Copenhagen was so unexpectedly beautiful, that it really did blow us away, in so many ways. As you can imagine, the restaurant scene was one of the major positives to this great city, and luckily enough for us, we were given the best tip prior to visiting – visit and dine at Steak Royal.

fill the restaurant with deep aromas and passionate cooking. It is an unmistakably Danish dining experience, whilst popular amongst all who flock to Copenhagen from around the world, showing their cultural visions and popularity.

The service is impeccable, again, very appealing with a relaxed but earnest notion to it. Even though the restaurant was fully booked, and thriving on a busy Thursday evening, staff were on hand at every moment, never failing to deliver on the true excellence, Madklubben

Part of the Madklubben group’s extremely popular list of restaurants, covering all sorts of audiences and food, Steak Royal sits at the heart of Rainbow Square, also known in Copenhagen as Regnbuepladsen. Across from the City Hall, it is ideally located boasting an elegant, and friendly atmosphere inside. It has a real modern but historic feel to it, which is extremely popular most nights of the week, particularly Wednesday through Sunday. restaurants have become renowned for in Copenhagen. We enjoyed a Fish Taco of deep fried cod, with lime, avocado and coriander to start, with a mouthwatering beef tenderloin as our main course. The steak is sourced locally in Denmark, with the taste unmatchable, it is a question of time before I go back. With the menu offering aperitive meat and fish options, including pan seared lobster, tempura fried halibut, turbot and cod, it has an eclectic taste, delivering an outstanding experience. In full Copenhagen Pride spirit, you’ll leave wishing you lived next door to this wondrous eatery, making friends along the way – enjoy your next trip, and taste the experience next time you are in Copenhagen! BELLO mag sat down with the New York City-born actor as he spoke about the 2017 Golden Globes, his recent TV movie ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again,’ and most importantly, his new album. BELLO: I saw on Instagram that you attended the Golden Globes on Sunday night, what was the evening like? Reeve Carney: It was wonderful! Ran into some unexpected familiar faces, which is always nice. I’ve always tended to dress myself at events like these, but that night I had the opportunity to wear something quite lovely from Guess, which was provided to me by the amazing Phillip Morrison, who actually styled me in this Bello Magazine shoot as well! B: Which television show was your favourite winner of the night? Or favourite actor/actress? RC: I’ve always admired Ryan Gosling and his work, as an actor... But I was particularly impressed with, and surprised by his dancing in La La Land... And as a student of Jazz myself, I was blown away by his ability to so convincingly portray a seasoned Be Bop Jazz pianist... Bravo! B: You recently starred in the TV movie, ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again.’ What was it like to be part of such an iconic production? RC: Truly an honour. And quite possibly the most fun I’ve ever had on set... When you’re dealing with material that is so beloved by the fans, and truly in this case almost one with the fans, you definitely feel a heightened sense of responsibility to both honor the intention of the original, while still granting yourself the freedom to let things unfold as truthfully as possible. We were so fortunate to not only have such a remarkable cast of artists, and humans, 35

but also the Legendary Lou Adler, and the incomparable Kenny Ortega at the helm, among others... a true joy. Would love to work with everyone in that film again, in some capacity. B: Out of all the characters you’ve played, who would you say has been the most challenging? RC: They all have their own uniquely challenging aspects... Playing Spider-Man on Broadway was probably the most challenging physically speaking, although Riff Raff had his moments, doing the Time Warp in those heels! Ha. But from an acting standpoint, I am always looking for something that will challenge me and help me grow... And they’ve all done that for me. Television provides you with a unique opportunity to live inside of a character while constantly being fed new material to deliver... I really enjoyed that while playing Dorian Gray in Penny Dreadful. It becomes a part of you, if you want it to. All of these characters do, I think. You decide how much you want to keep with you, and how much you want to leave behind. As well as how much you bring of yourself to live within that character... B: You played Taylor Swift’s love interest in her music video for ‘I Knew You Were Trouble.’ How did that opportunity come about and what was that like? RC: I did! That was a blast. I asked Taylor that same question when I met her on set, and she told me she had been a fan of my music, which was quite the honor! We spent 2 days shooting in and around the Los Angeles area. I particularly enjoyed that bar brawl scene, because they let me do all of my own stunts! And standing up while driving that beautiful old convertible through the hills! Such a blast... B: You are due to star in the film Gemini alongside Zoe Kravitz. What is this movie about?

RC: Oddly enough, I still haven’t actually met Zoe! I worked on the film for 2 days, and most of my work was with Los Kirke. I’m excited to see the film... B: One of your most iconic characters is Dorian Gray on Penny Dreadful. What was the hardest part about playing this character? RC: Probably the sex scenes! Ha. Truly though... I almost didn’t take the role because I was nervous about doing those sorts of scenes! But ultimately I found them to be quite freeing... In the sense that they add an additional layer to the challenge as an actor... Almost like using led doughnuts on your baseball bat before stepping up to the plate... when you finally get to do a scene with your clothes on again, you’ve got one less thing to worry about! Ha. At least in my experience. In the case of Penny Dreadful, it really was John Logan’s writing that made the opportunity truly irresistible... such a brilliant poetic force... An honour to speak his words... And working with Showtime, and Sam Mendes... Such great folks. It was really an honor to be a part of that one. B: Is there a particular actor or actress you’d like to work with in the future? RC: Oh geez, that’s a tough one... I’ve learned so much from working with everyone I’ve had the opportunity to work with this far. Timothy Dalton for example, taught me to be comfortable watching myself on screen, which has been incredibly helpful for me... I feel that if you’re open to receiving, there are so many lessons to be learned. Well, Steve Carell comes to mind... he’s certainly one of my favorites... And Gary Oldman... I’ve also been watching The OA, and am a big fan of Jason Isaacs... such range and nuance... As far as female actors go, hmm... So many great ones... I’ve met Anne Hathaway a few times, and she’d certainly be a great one to work with... Such a talent. Really genuinely nice person too. Too many to name! January 2017 - BELLO

B: Aside from acting, you have a new album out, ‘Youth IsWasted’. Tell me a little bit about this album? What genre would you describe it as? RC: It feels to me like a bit of a cross pollination of Rock n’ Roll, Blues, Jazz and Soul... Sometimes I think it can take an artist some time to grow into their own work... On this record, fans of my music may recognize a few titles, amongst a primarily new collection of material... I built a recording studio in my apartment in NYC to record these songs, and played all of the instruments. And produced and mixed it as well. Such an incredible joy... straight from the heart. My hope is that the listener is taken on a real journey over the course of the record, as it was designed to be listened to as a body of work. Although I certainly wouldn’t fault anyone for picking a favorite song and playing it on repeat!

RC: So many places... I grew up playing in Jazz Ensembles and Orchestras, as well as Blues and Rock N’ Roll bands. From an arrangement standpoint, I learned so much from those experiences in particular, which helped me immensely in producing this record... Being a lover of surprising, and dense harmony, I’ve been a lifelong fan of the Beatles... and Queen, for that matter. As funny as it sounds, I like the say that my primary influences stretch from around 1978 to the dawn of recorded music... but I’m often inspired by more modern things as well... B: Which musician would you like to collaborate with in the future?

B: Is there anything else you have going on at the moment that you want to tell your fans? Well, now that this record is out, I’m composing new material... Excited to see how I might use this next body of work... as well as auditioning for some really fun things... Keep an eye on my social media channels for further updates regarding my traveling musical endeavors... And thank you to all of you who have gone out and bought my record! Also, thank you to Bello Magazine, and everyone on the shoot for for a really fun day, and a fun interview!

RC: Oh geez that’s a tough one... I’ve collaborated with so many incredible ones... maybe Pharrell? Yeah, that’d be cool...

B: Where do you get your musical inspiration from?
