“A renaissance of the American Riviera” BY: STEVEN CARVER
Metropolises must change with the times. The needs of its residents outweigh the wants of the council. With a city like Miami, it’s an evolution: from the revival of the art deco architecture of the 1980’s, to the youth-centric club-hopping hub of the 2000’s. And the South Beach neighborhood has been reinventing itself as a destination for travelers. The American Riviera is undergoing a renaissance and so are its hotels.
Situated in Miami’s South Beach, 1 Hotel & Homes encourages travelers to live well, do better, and connect with the world around them. With interiors by New York design firm Meyer Davis Studio, 1HH features high-end design with low-impact materials. The architecture, décor and landscaping create #144 issue - BELLOmag.com
spaces that bring the effortless beauty of nature indoors. When first approaching the hotel, visitors are welcomed with 3,000 feet of a living wall. The verdant foliage adds a bright punch of color on an otherwise pristine white building. After driving
through the portico, guests are gently ushered into the soaring lobby and everything slows down a beat. To the immediate right is a graphic, breathing living wall from Plant the Future of a “moss man” that reaches towards the ceiling. A green initiative, 6
this design element is a part of over 20,000 plants and forms of greenery that placed throughout the property to enhance air quality – naturally – while beautifying the environment. The lounge is situated to the left, featuring ceilings made of reclaimed wood from water towers in Alaska, white slip-covered seating, accent pieces crafted of fallen trees from South American rainforests, and rugs woven of tree
resin or sheep’s wool (that’s brushed regularly, with remnants reused elsewhere). Open and airy, the aesthetic is pure South Beach. Taking a few steps towards the checkin area, the suede-like flooring appears to be concrete but is actually made of clay and water (if there’s a scratch or a crack, a craftsman comes in, buffs the spot and it’s just like new). Solicitous staff awaits guests behind desks (with
driftwood details) and pass on circular key cards made of recycled wood chips after a quick registration. The digitized elevators make it a quick ride to the respective floors. With 426 rooms, averaging average 700 square feet (the largest in South Beach), the aesthetic is fresh, yet rustic. Awash in tones of white, cream and taupe, beds are built on reclaimed white oak platforms with headboards made of Colorado beetle kill wood (the developers bought the rainforest of dying trees and replanted it). Custom hemp-blend mattresses by Keetsa (wrapped in 100 per cent organic and hypoallergenic linens) ensure a good night sleep, while wrap-around daybed couches backed by cushioned oversized pillows can fit 10 people in comfort. Complimenting the natural aspects of each room are electronic creature comforts. From flat screen TVs to complimentary WiFi and plugs for digital devices, there’s also industry-leading technology that encourages real-time communication with a slick “Field

Miami’s skyline create a desire to head outside. The four pools – three off the third floor, one on the rooftop – aren’t just for bikini-clad bodies. Pick and choose between the two primary pools, the largest solar powered pool in the world a few steps below, or the largest rooftop pool in South Beach; all heated to a perfect 82 degrees. The open-air environment is an expanse of white terrycloth and whitewashed woods (the Ipe wood from the property’s original boardwalk is used to cover the redesigned pool deck), rows of loungers and umbrellas, swaying palms and private cabanas. Not a fan of pools? 1HH has the Guide” app that eliminates the need for in-room phones, remote controls, or excess paper. The spa-like bathrooms are lush and luxurious: natural stone floors; spacious showers; custom-created 1HH bath and body products; water filters in all taps, sinks, and showers (not to mention complimentary reusable recycled water glasses to use with the Triple Clear Water in-room water tap). With interiors being a refuge for relaxation, unparalleled views of the Atlantic Ocean, Biscayne Bay or downtown

only private beach in the district as well as access to 600 linear feet of pristine sand and surf. With activations occurring throughout the day, 1HH’s aim is to give guests more meaningful experiences during their stay. A series of curated “Daylife” programs (“Seedlings” for kids, holistic ones for the kid at heart) and a collection of rituals is designed to cultivate positive connections with nature, the community, and the local environment. Downtime activities – “Dark Sky” dims the lights in public spaces for a candlelit evening, visiting social-media friendly DJs play throughout the year, and a variety of in-room spa services – will keep everyone entertained. When food is the first priority, 1HH has several unique dining venues. Organic signature hotel restaurant (Beachcraft), lobby lounge bar (Tom on Collins), and poolside restaurant (The Sandbox) from James Beard Award-winning chef, Tom Colicchio focus on fresh ingredients (all herbs are grown on site), seasonality and responsible sourcing 9

from local purveyors. Desire a view? There’s Watr on the rooftop. Craving a carnivore’s delight? Try STK by the One Group. No desire to leave bed? The in-room dining options are available 24 hours a day. And while many visit 1HH for a short sojourn, there are those who are looking to stay a little longer. The residences seamlessly translate the sensory experience of South Beach into spaces that exude grace and harmony. A private entrance lobby takes residents to the penthouse floors, adding to their exclusivity. Available in two-to-four bedroom layouts, they feature interiors designed by Debora Aguiar Arquitetos that are inspired by the coastal setting. Large windows and private balconies with views of the Atlantic Ocean or the Miami skyline blur the lines between inside and out. High ceilings add to the airiness, while immaculate finishes – limestone, teak, travertine and white #144 issue - BELLOmag.com

quartz – line the spaces. Custom kitchens from Italkraft (with Wolf and Sub Zero appliances) and spa-like bathrooms with soaking tubs and rain/waterfall showerheads from Dornbracht will be used frequently. Access to many of the facilities of 1HH – a 24-hour concierge, valet parking, use of the Tesla house car service (with a pre-set radius), in-residence massage, spa and fitness services (including personal training), amongst others – is included, and full turnkey operation (the residences are equipped with everything a new homeowner needs, from dishes to linens) makes moving in a breeze. With all of this on offer, why ever leave? This is the reason why it’s the only 1 Hotel in South Beach.

“The restorative resort”
BY: STEVEN CARVER
In today’s society, personal information inevitably becomes public; on purpose or by accident. But, privacy is a form of protection – mind, body and soul. In all actualities, many want to go away, find some peace, and get some much needed R&R; it’s not just overexposed celebrities. How to leave it all behind without sacrificing one’s spirit? It’s not a secret, but it can be a resort. Hidden in a small village of Playa Xcalacoco (pronounced esh-CAHL-ah-CO-co, which in the Mayan tongue means “twin coconut palms”), the Viceroy Riviera Maya is a serene seaside refuge extending deep into the primitive Maya tropical forest. The secluded, six-acre resort located on the Caribbean

coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula combines luxury comforts with a dramatic backdrop and provides unforgettable experiences to everyone who visits. After driving down winding back roads, guests are welcomed to the hotel. There is no front
door to walk through, no threshold to cross – it’s completely open to the outdoors. Under the high ceilings of a thatched roof, native wood finishes, tropical foliage and bubbling fountain, awaiting staff greets each visitor. After a speedy sign-in, bags are whisked away and the tour of the resort commences.
12
To start, a traditional Mayan blessing is performed by the shaman-in-residence for all arriving guests. He dispels negative forces and introduces positive energy in a simple ceremony, while burning purifying copal (an aromatic tree resin) incense and reciting the Mayan phrase, “Ah yum hunab ku evam maya ema ho” (translated as “The peace and nature of the cosmos will be in all of us”). The only full-time shaman on staff at a resort in Mexico, he interacts directly and indirectly with guests (using his deep knowledge of the region’s plant life), infusing Mayan elements into the resort’s daily activities. Walking around the curves of the main pathway, passing by the occasional waterfall and intimate seating space, guests stroll by 41 private villas scattered throughout the property. The hidden entrances soon give way to spacious outdoor sitting areas with chaise lounges and a daybed (covered with a variety of pillows), handmade crochet hammock and a plunge pool – all amongst the beauty of nature. Whether reserving a villa with a secluded, beach front or ocean view, the palapa-roofed dwellings are decorated in neutral tones –

and an occasional splash of aqua – with Mayan motifs. A large canopy bed takes center stage, soft-seated furnishings are placed around the perimeter, vaulted ceilings add to an air of lightness, and the natural materials (louvered-mahogany doors and windows, stone floors, hand-stitched 500-thread-count Egyptian cotton linens) add to the holistic properties of the resort.

The fully-equipped spa bathroom contains modern conveniences, fluffy towels, linen robes, natural light, an outdoor shower that is meant to be experienced at any time of the day, and a soap concierge delivers fragrant bars that are handmade using ancient Mayan traditions. Standard amenities include: an entertainment center with a flat-panel HD-TV and satellite television, a DVD/CD player (with new releases), a selection of books (which also includes the Viceroy’s daily paper), complimentary Wi-Fi, and an evening turndown that leaves the bed opened, air condi-

The Spa at Viceroy Riviera Maya is nestled amongst the lush tropics at the center of the resort, and designed in a circular configuration (housing a domed steam room, marble whirlpool, showers, and his-and-her quiet areas for reflection) echoing the holistic philosophy of the Mayans. And the themed nights of Antojeria and Beach Parrillada feasts bring an authentic touch of Mexico to the table. Whether enjoying a meal at the La Marea restaurant which overlooks the grounds in a rooftop perch (the laid-back Library Lounge rests beneath it), the casual Coral Grill by the beach, a romantic dinner on the pier, or snacking en suite, the fresh and fabulous food doesn’t disappoint.

At the end, participants depart with a sense of calmness, renewal, and energy restoration. Say ahhh. After the rest and relaxation, it’s time to grab a bite to eat. Under the guidance of Executive Chef Jorge Ildefonso, traditional foods from his childhood in Mexico are re-imagined with local ingredients sourced from nearby suppliers. Not sure what to during those free moments? The concierge can coordinate an entertaining day. Have them arrange quick trips to nearby Tulum or Chichen-Itza, or plan an exciting time skydiving and parasailing. Even weddings have been organized with their special events team: with the sunset as a backdrop on the beach, candlelit by the swaying palms of the Lagoon Pool, nestled in a palapa in the jungle, or amongst the nature of the Xcalacoco Gardens – all are undeniably unforgettable. Before leaving, visit the La Tienda boutique to take a little something back home. Selling fashion accessories and one-of-a-kind silver jewelry inspired by Mexico’s culture (as well as museum-quality archaeological reproductions certified by the National Institute of Anthropology), each purchase is a memento of the time spent at the resort. They’ll act as a subtle reminder to return to the Viceroy Riviera Maya: the restorative resort.

Christian Serratos Christian Serratos has been part of two of pop cultures biggest franchises, Twilight and The Walking Dead. The talented Californiaborn beauty sat down with BELLO to talk about her epic role on one of TV’s most addictive dramas and what she likes most about her badass character in the apocalyptic zombie world.
So the Walking Dead is back after a harrowing last season! What can you tease about this upcoming season? In the first half of season 7 we saw the aftermath of two huge loses. We saw the character we love become submissive for the first time. I’m really looking forward to the second half where hopefully we see them rise up with success. What would you say your three favorite qualities about Rosita Espinosa are? Persistence, bravery and mystery. How has Rosita evolved this season? Are there any changes to her personality that you noticeably recognize from reading the scripts? All these characters went through a life changing experience at the top of this season. It’s the lowest we have ever seen them. Losing two of her family members absolutely propelled her in a different direction. What’s interesting this season is seeing if that direction is going to get her killed or if it’s going to avenge her loved ones. 21
Hopefully it won’t come to this soon! But if your character were to be killed off, how would you want to go? Death on this show is inevitable. Kirkman gave Rosita an epic death in the comic book, he did that for every character. No wasted moments. So whatever twist or turn happens for her I’ll take it with bells on. You regularly post on Instagram and Twitter about your love for animals. You specifically posted recently about Project Chimps and your support for them. Can you tell me a little more about this? Project chimps is a brand new chimpanzee sanctuary in northern Georgia, which will eventually be home to 300 former laboratory chimps. I’ve been a supporter of the humane society of the United States for years and when I heard they had funded this beautiful project, I had to go see for myself! People can learn more, donate, and read about the chimps stories at www.projectchimps.org Have you always been passionate about animals? I’ve always loved ani-
mals and thought they should be treated with respect. Like a lot of people I was scared of information. I didn’t want to know what terrible things were happening right under my nose. To properly do my part and help in the way I wanted and needed to meant educating myself. Which is usually the hardest part.

Cabo San Lucas is located on the southern tip of the peninsula of Baja California in Mexico. Surrounded by white sand beaches, colonial style architecture, and natural beauty, it is the perfect place to vacation and honeymoon on the west coast. These are few of the reasons why we have chosen it as a Top Destination To Visit in 2017. To experience it all there is no better place to begin your trip than Sheraton Grand Los Cabos Hacienda Del Mar.
45
March 2017 - BELLO
Romance and Relaxing From the moment you walk in, the classic old Mexico style of the resort will make you feel welcomed and ready for an adventure. The open corridor leads you to the courtyard where stunning views of Sea of Cortez and Tortuga Beach will transport you to a different state of mind. It is one of the most serene places you can stay at. The privacy of the beach gives you ample room for long walks with your feet touching the cool sand, or a morning yoga session with the orange tones of the sun reflecting over the water. The Sheraton Grand Los Cabos Hacienda Del Mar hotel is laid out in a way that everyone can enjoy everything that it has to offer. From Deluxe Rooms to Suites, each accommodation features a view overlooking the water or gardens, and an in-room jacuzzi. This is one of the best treats as it gives you the chance to soak in and relax, or set it up to have a romantic time. One of the best things of the suites is that it has private bathroom areas and double sinks, making it easier for families to get ready in the morning, and be out and about in a heartbeat.

Then you can start working on your tan and lounge on a cabana listening to the movement of the palm trees, while sipping on a refreshing Michelada. The property features five magnificent pools with a distinct style and purpose. From a kids’ pool with waterslides and jets, to the gorgeous infinity pool strategically located on top of the beach. After a day of water sports or laying on the sun, I recommend a treatment at the Cactus Spa. The Chocolate Massage is my favorite because it merges relaxation techniques with the intoxicating aroma of cacao. A chocolate butter, specially made for the hotel, will leave your skin moisturized and smelling delicious. It is the perfect treat for couples looking to spend some pampering time together, or moms needed to distress from the everyday routine.
Dining and Drinking Begin your day with a delightful house made breakfast at Tomatoes Restaurant. Mediterranean inspired local cuisine features chilaquiles, assorted fresh fruits and pastries, all sort of cold cuts, and a made to order food bar for your cravings! At night head to Bar La

The Clam Bisque, Sea Bass Tiradito, Mushroom Risotto, and the Pacific Salmon are some of our top recommendations. At this hotel a night in can be just as fun as a night on the town, and their Market Night is a great example. Adventures and Architecture The famous Arch of Cabo San Lucas can easily be one of the natural wonders of the world. These rock formations in shape of an arch are also known as Land’s End because they used to be considered as the last point of connection between water and land. They are also the meeting spot between the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean. These majestic and mysterious caverns are home to coral reefs, sea lions, and unique sea creatures that can thrive in this preserved environment. The shape of the rocks has allowed for the creation of unique areas that have become small islands including Lover’s Beach and Divorce Beach. Accessible only by boat, they have these names because of their distinct characteristics that resemble those of the relationships. The first one is calm and great for swimming and snorkeling, while the latter has a strong current that makes it more difficult to partake on water activities. #144 issue - BELLOmag.com

After a day snorkeling is time to soak on the sun and have a delicious meal at SUR Beach House By Bar Esquina. Located on Medano beach, this place is nothing short of spectacular. Forest, designated as Germany’s largest nature park, surrounding lush green trees and long rivers make the scenery feel mysterious. The Hofgut Sternen, now associated with the Best Western chain, is the ideal place to stay in the area. This beautiful hotel has been the preferred venue for an extensive list of selected guests that include Austrian Princess Marie Antoinette on her way to Paris to marry King Louis XVI, French Emperor Napoleon III, and poet Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe. Chocolate and Cars in Stuttgart I have to admit that chocolate and sport cars are two of my favorite things, and the city of Stuttgart could easily be considered as a paradise for an aficionado of either of those. Described as a hybrid between modern technology and ancient architecture, this is a place
where you are able to fulfill every childhood’s dream and reminisce about history in a very entertaining way. The suites are spacious and extremely comfortable. They include a king sized bed, sofa bed, and a separate tub and shower. This is always a perk for frequent travelers and people with back problems, like myself, who might need to soak-in for a few minutes in order to relax their muscles. Besides, who does not love a nighttime bubble bath? Begin the day with a tour of The Schlossplatz Square, as it is the

Situated between Mount Feldberg and Mount Kandel, this beautiful convent and church was built over nine hundred years ago. Famous for keeping a notable assortment of antique Cherrywood cuckoo clocks, the historians have managed to preserve a detailed visual storyline of how this tradition started, and why it became so popular. 53
