McCartan WORDS BY MICHELLE GANNEY PHOTOS BY LESLIE ALEJANDRO AND VANESSA VIOLA

At the mere age of 23, Ryan McCartan’s career is already soaring. The Minnesota-born charmer is a double threat in the entertainment industry. He showed off his singing chops in the TV movie The Rocky Horror Picture show and his acting chops as a series regular in Disney’s hit show Liv and Maddie. The aspiring entertainer sat down with BELLO to talk about his next steps on his road to stardom.

AGAIN, I’M VERY BLESSED BUT I ALSO HAVE TO BE REALLY CAREFUL AS I HAVE A VERY IMPRESSIONABLE GROUP OF FANS, THEY’RE AT THAT SORT OF THAT AGE WHERE THE RIGHT WORDS, OR THE WRONG WORDS, CAN REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

How did you begin your career in LA being from Minnesota? I started because my sister came out of the womb singing and dancing and I think my parents discovered I could sing because I was making fun of her! And what happened from there? My manager! Nancy is an absolute angel, not just the best manager but the best person ever. I am so eternally grateful to work with her. I think that’s the cornerstone of all of this, it wouldn’t be happening without her. She supports me personally too, she’s much more about making an impact than making a lot of noise and that really means a lot to me. I know you tweet and instagram a lot about the brand Love Your Melon, the organization helping to improve the lives of children battling cancer. Tell me a little bit more about this? What they do and how vocal their brand is and the confidence that they give people who are going through something that difficult I think is absolutely beautiful and breathtaking, so I really wanted to be a part of it. A cousin of mine is working very, very intensely with this charity through her school so she asked me if I would jump on this campaign again and I said absolutely. Again, I’m very blessed but I also have to be really careful as I have a very impressionable group of fans, they’re 9

at that sort of that age where the right words, or the wrong words, can really make a difference. So anything I can do to promote organizations that are promoting positivity and confidence and helping people out, I’m on board. That’s really important to me and I’ve seen it make a big difference in people’s lives. That’s something I am never going to lose sight of. With regards to your music and your acting, what can your fans expect from you in the future? The end of last year I was finishing a lot of projects that I was producing and spearheading on my own which was great. My manager and I are working on producing a film, I’m also writing making and producing a lot of music with one of my best friends in the world which has been really exciting. We do it all in my bedroom and just sit there for hours and turn the knobs and it’s really, really cool. So the end of last year was this sort of weird independent time where I was doing everything myself, all these entrepreneurial side projects. Lastly what are your 2017 New Year resolutions? I don’t know if I’ll be able to do this but I really want to try. I want to try and release a song a month in 2017. I have the capabilities to do it, I have the support to do it and I definitely have the passion for it. I love music and I’ve learnt some invaluable lessons. February 2017 - BELLO

Bello spotlight

Sanja Rajacic I’M A SERBIAN SOUL WHO FELL IN LOVE WITH AMERICAN ACTING STYLE. I TOOK MY FIRST ACTING STEPS IN A THEATRE WHEN I WAS 7-YEARS-OLD, BUT I KNEW THE FULL MAGIC WAS GOING TO HAPPEN ONLY IF I PURSUE IT IN SHAKESPEAREAN NATIVE LANGUAGE. MY FIRST NAME DESCRIBES ME PERFECTLY, SANJA, “A DREAMER”, SO IT WAS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME UNTIL I LEFT TO PURSUE THAT KID’S FANTASY.

I

spun the globe that was glowing above my head every night before I went to sleep, and the first country that my finger fell on was Canada. I asked my parents for permission and they said yes without thinking twice. My assumption was that they didn’t take me seriously, but when I came back with approved visa, they couldn’t let me down and say no. I packed my bags and went to Canada to learn English. My parents were my biggest support, emotionally and financially, but it was I who paid for my first two semesters out of my own money that I saved ever since I first imagined acting next to Leonardo and Meryl. I was supposed to go to a Law School and do acting on the side (because Serbians are well-educated people and it was expected of me to be the same), but my drama teacher didn’t let me leave without auditioning for drama school. I sent my application to Ryerson University, but I still translated my two Serbian monologues into English, and auditioned for the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. I didn’t follow the dress code or any other auditioning rules, because Broadway and Hollywood were only imaginations done

#145 issue - BELLOmag.com

next to the globe before I fall asleep; so, I satisfied myself with Canadian school and auditioned for AMDA just to prepare and loosen up for the Canadian York University. When I received the “CONGRATULATIONS” e-mail, I had to give it to my friend to verify if I understood English well or I only wasted a year away from home. At the age of 19, I moved to that concrete jungle where dreams are made of, loving every single day of it. I was not old enough to party, nor did I care about anything other than acting and practicing “ho, ha, hou” in order not to sound like a Serbian criminal. After my Conservatory Degree, my voice and speech teacher called me to check if I auditioned for Shakespeare in the park. I laughed, saying it’s absurd for me to even try it. He made me go to the audition the next morning, and not only did I get the role, but my dream to act as a male character in Shakespearean play came true. Blanche died in the 3rd act so I reappeared as Melun in the 5th. 3 years have passed, I finished my 6 am, 8 hour, Broadway auditions, and moved to LA to finish my BFA Degree, experience film and give something

back to my parents (to at least watch me on the big screen and read the subtitles). Nothing was harder and more joyful at the same time than writing a character for myself in my first feature film “48 Hours and 1 minute”. I love choosing pieces that deal with topics that people avoid, especially because it changes my own perspective of life, as well as other people’s. The movie is about kidnapping and it’s only one more role that made my parents get worried about me, thinking I am going through rough times on my own. One of my favorite acting roles is Arnie from “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (which was my inspiration to become an actress), and I was the happiest when I finally had a chance to portray a disabled child in my own independent film. After hours of rehearsal, I remember holding a cup of water and thanking God for being healthy and being able to take that sip. It made me realize that I cared and complained about foolish things in life, and it made me understand people and experience life better. That is the reason why I am an actress. I want to move that trigger in other people and start the thought process that will impact their future actions.

SUGARCANE raw bar grill executive chef/partner Timon Balloo has successfully lead this experience.

Everyone thought this would be a great partnership.” You must try some of their amazing cocktails, and let me tell you, everything on that food menu is amazing. #145 issue - BELLOmag.com

SUGARCANE raw bar grill features a raw bar, plus an open-fire grill and a traditional kitchen, which will turn out such familiar dishes as bacon-wrapped dates (although with a linguica difference) and the more exotic, in the likes of pig ear pad thai (must try) and Okinawa purple sweet potato.

“The mission is to bring some Miami flair to the Vegas Strip,” Balloo said. “There are many great restaurants, many great chefs here. We thought it would be a great addition.” By “Miami flair,” he said, he means “a little bit of that Latino vibe,” mostly in28

Aldo Carrera is a Mexican-American fine art and fashion photographer. His work has a cool, impromptu style that creates a documentary type feel. This allows the viewer to feel like they are part of the process more intimately. Influenced by the Renaissance painter Carvaggio, his style involves the use of dramatic lighting paired with observation of the natural state of mind.

WHAT BEING A MODEL MEANS IN TODAY’S SOCIETY

the expert guide by an international supermodel WRITTEN & CREATED BY MARK NORRIS

There used to be a time when the average fashion model would live a life of disparate luxury, away from ‘normal society’, where people slave away working for a living. But times have changed, the commercial world has tightened its belt, and brands are no longer held at ransom for this seasons prettiest face. I would harbour there being four ways in which the model industry has changed over the years; diversity, instant exposure, a voice for good, international fan base.

DIVERSITY Although there have been different “ideal body types” for models throughout history, in the past, if a model didn’t fit into that particular category, their modeling options were limited. From the waif’s like Kate Moss to curvier models like Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer, one body type has often dominated the modeling world. Even on the men’s side, attending a casting full of virtually every identity you can dream of becomes quite tedious and daunting. What is the brand looking for? Many times I don’t even think the brand knows, before they meet him/ her. Of course, this makes booking jobs much more difficult. There are so many ‘flavors of the month’ these days that one can never predict the next direction the wind will blow.

Mark Norris for Ralph Lauren #145 issue - BELLOmag.com

56

INSTANT EXPOSURE In the 1970s and 1980s, entering a modeling competition became a popular way to get discovered by a modeling agency. David Gandy is an example of that. But these days, the exists a plethora of ‘model scouts’, that spot talent on the street, and introduce them to agencies worldwide, which shoots them directly to the most important clients and photographers. Kate Moss

57

Of course, social media has had a huge impact on this area of discovery and self-obsession.

February 2017 - BELLO

Tyson Beckford

A VOICE FOR GOOD Models have a voice for good more than they ever have before. Today, many models use their social position to make important political and social statements. Some models speak out about their political views, marriage equality, charity and humanitarian efforts, animal rights, and the modeling industry itself. Â Many models, like Miranda Kerr, Lily Aldridge, and Hilary Rhoda, partner with big-name brands to raise funds for charity. This is one of the most positive aspects of the level of celebrity many models achieve today.Â

#145 issue - BELLOmag.com

58

AN INTERNATIONAL FAN BASE Before the internet and social media, the public knew far less about their favorite models than they do now. Nowadays, there are even social media celebrities. So professional models live an intrusive life that barely gets hidden from their facebook or instagram feeds. Their fans know everything.

David Gandy

59

This can have implications on many other aspects of their life, and psychological well-being. Children grow up with a lot of pressure these days to create a ‘social media life’ that people desire. I can only imagine that when I was growing up.
