DANIEL SHARMAN

PHOTOGRAPHY ALEKSANDAR TOMOVIC

It was seven years ago in June 2010 when I first met Daniel Sharman. It was on the Montreal set of the film IMMORTALS where I was working as a set designer, and at the time Daniel was an up-and-coming 24-year-old actor playing the role of Ares, the Greek god of war. I was struck not only by his gilded gold costume, but also his striking good looks, his towering 6'-2" height, and most memorably by his charming and adorable personality. Now at 31, the British-born actor is even more handsome and delightful than ever, and his career has since risen to the very top of the top. I recently spoke with Daniel by phone ...

In the late 1990s, prominent architects became celebrities in their own right with their designs. It was the rise of starchitecture. These showpieces – like Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain – attracted visitors to the venue, as well as revitalizing surrounding neighborhoods. Everyone was a winner by proxy. Soon enough, the process of sourcing an architect who could create a striking edifice became a game of one-upmanship. From the surreal glass curves set in a concrete box of the Salvador Dali Museum (located in St. Petersburg, Florida and designed by HOK) to the graceful, undulating waves of the Heydar Aliyev Center (situated in Baku, Azerbaijan and designed by Zaha Hadid); these buildings became architectural icons. No longer was the art housed inside of museums the main focus, but the museums assumed an alternate form of sculptural works of art. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler, The Broad is the first entirely new major museum founded in Los Angeles in almost 20 years. Given a blank canvas to work from, the contemporary art museum

Bello

moves beyond the constructs of traditional buildings with a design that not only changes the face of the city’s gentrifying downtown landscape, but also assimilates it into its environment. Founded by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad, the museum is home to the 2,000-work Broad collection and showcases some of the most prominent works of postwar and contemporary art worldwide – including pieces from influential contemporary artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cy Twombly, Ed Ruscha, Jeff Koons, Jasper Johns, Cindy Sherman, Ellsworth Kelly, Roy Lichtenstein, and more – and makes its collection accessible to the widest possible audience by presenting exhibitions and operating a lending program to art museums and galleries worldwide (over 8,000 to approx 500 museums). issue #155

Creating a flow between public and private space, DS+R designed the “the veil and the vault” as a 120,000-square-foot building that merges the two key components of a museum: two floors of gallery space (50,000 square feet) and collection storage. The “vault” hovers midway in the building, always in view. With the underside shaping the lobby below and the top surface becoming the floor of the exhibition space above, the core stores portions of the collection not currently displayed or loaned out (windows are provided so visitors can peek at the expansive space beyond the galleries). Enveloping the “vault” is the “veil”: a honeycomb-like grid that wraps around the blocklong gallery and provides filtered, natural daylight. 8

A spacious gallery allows the works of art to be appreciated, while its airiness gives visitors the ability to breathe – both physically and mentally – while taking in the environment. The dynamic collections on display and diverse public programming not only enrich the lives of those who visit The Broad, but also engage the mind of those who’ll want to return. There’s an art in making an effective museum, but also an art in designing one.

JACKIE CRUZ PHOTOGRAPHY ARTHUR GALVAO

SPOT LIGHT

by Christian Stan

Activism is Jackie Cruz's main trait, the actress who uses the popularity she gained with her role as Flaca in Orange Is the New Black, to fight for the social causes she believes in. Through her own production company, Unspoken Films, Jackie aims to bring in the limelight taboo stories, which many prefer to ignore and about which nobody dares to speak out. Bold and genuine, Jackie Cruz does not hesitate to tell it like it is , and she always finds new ways to explore her creativity. Music was her first love and nowadays she is also flirting with photography, but it was her acting that made her famous with her role of Flaca in OITNB. Her boyfriend Fernando (a painter who is preparing for his first show in New York) has introduced Jackie in the fascinanting world of conteporary art. We had a phone conversion on a Saturdau afternoon, right after Bastille Day, which Jackie spent in Paris at the invitation of some friends. Just like her character, Jackie is optimistic and cheerful, and she always sees the glass half full. Her fame did not get to her head and she did not lose touch with reality. On the contrary, she takes advantage of this platform to make her voice heard, in order to leave her mark in this world. She dreams of a tolerant world, a world without prejudices and racial hatred, where people respect eachother and it does not matter what you belive in, where you were born or who you love, as long as you are a good person. Â I think we should all follow her example and make her message heard, so as to slowly change the way future generations will think!Â

Jackie, thank you for doing this interview while in vacation. Tell me, how do you unwind when you have some free time? I come from the Dominican Republic, and honestly I like everything that has to do with the beach. I also love being with my family and surrounded by my people and my closest friends. I've never tried spending my vacation in the mountains. I've been thinking to go snowboarding or skiing, as there are some really cool mountain resorts near New York, but I've never got the chance. For now, beach and sea, please. Your summer escapade in Europe started in Rome. You've also been to the Ischia Film Festival and now you are in Paris. I know that you’re mixing fun with work. Yes, I am in Paris right now with Remy Martin Cognac. I have partnered with them last year for the Circle of Centaurus mentorship program, that recognizes and celebrates individuals' many talents. This is the first company that actually believed in my music and hired me not because I am an actress, but because I have other talents besides wanting to act. Music has always been my first love and it’s amazing that I had the opportunity to mentor someone else. I did a few performances for Remy Martin in New York, Miami and one of the girls that I chose to mentor was a singer from Miami. She is a Latina, from the Dominican Republic. It was very nice that I got the chance to meet all these people. I am not yet successful in the music area, but hopefully I'll get to do more music soon. You like to keep busy and you recently launched your own production company. What’s “Unspoken Films” about? I want to break barriers for diverse women, for women like me, who aren’t represented enough on screen. Through this company I want to show the stories that are not really seen as often or not talked about at all. My first short film will be done this summer and it’s about a woman who was raped in the military. This is a true story. These women have only 60 to 65 days to report the rape or else it doesn’t count. It’s like it never existed. This film focuses about what’s happening in the military and I really hope that something can change. I am just trying to raise awareness on the rapes and violence againts the women in the military system. You have also narrated a documentary, “The Naked Truth: Undocumented on Campus”, which focuses on immigration… The documentary tells this heartbreaking story of a student whose mother has to go back home in Mexico. She feared every day after the election that she was going to be deported. She didn’t have the right papers to work and live in the US and they were separated without even saying goodbye. He had to stay in the US to continue his studies. If he had gone

13

back to Mexico to see her, he couldn’t have come back… I was asked by the producers to narrate it and I was very honored to do so because I want people in similar situations to know that we are watching, we want to change things and we want to bring awareness about what’s happening to them. I love that there is so much more about you than acting and music. You have a calling for supporting social causes… I am here for a reason, and Orange Is the New Black gave me this amazing platform to talk, to create and to use my voice for what I believe in. We have only one life and I think it’s important to follow all of your passions, to be heard and I am so thankful for that. You are also an activist for LGBTQ rights and you have been marching at gay prides this year with your fellow actresses from OITNB… It’s all about raising awareness and making people feel confortable in their own skin. I want to support people, humans and I don’t want anybody to be left out. Highschool can be a difficult time for many of us.. you don't really know who you are yet.. marching and everything I am doing is for people people to feel that they are not alone and that we are here to support them. Bringing a voice to the LGBTQ community means showing the world that they are not alone, teaching the world to be more open and flexible. I get so many e-mails from women and men who have finally come out to their families, thanks to the show that I’m involved in. They are watching it on television, they feel represented and they feel like it’s OK. They learn to accept who they and to be proud of who they are. What would you say to a religious person that opposes to gay marriage? I really think that God loves of all us, no matter what our choices are. If you are a good person I don’t understand why who you believe in and who you love should matter. The last season of Orange Is the New Black was so intense with the riot that was going on. Flaca, your character, saw all this mess as the perfect opportunity to become a YouTube sensation… Flaca and Maritza handled this situation very different. Flaca has never been a Follower, she has always been a Leader. At first I thought that Flaca is doing again doing silly things, but after I saw the whole season I understood how important it was to have both Flaca and Mariza doing the Video Blog. This is their way of showing the world what’s going on inside the prison and to creat some funny moments in all that drama. This season I had a lot of fun with my best friend, Dianne, and I just never wanted to end.

July 2017

Bello

The end of the season showed Mariza and Flaca parting ways, as they are taken to different prisons. What’s going to happen to your character in the next season? I don’t know, and I am so excited to see what they'll write for season 6. I honestly don’t know what’s going to happen. I just got a phone call and the producers told me that I am going to be in Season 6. This is very exciting news for me, and I can’t wait to step out in the unknown territory. Have you ever thought about Vlogging in your real life? To have a platform like OITNB has made me feel like I do. I do a lots of Instagram Stories and yes, it kind of feels like I am vlogging. You also told me that you watched all the stories I did yesterday.:) This last season of the show showcased some cruel violence with the feud between Red and Piscatella? Do you think this is something common in real life?

know much about art until I met him and I am curious to discover new things each and every day. He is going to his first show very soon. It’s happening on August 23rd in New York. You will be 31 on the 8th of August. You share the same birthday as my favorite characters from Sense8. How would you describe yourself in 3 words? That's so cool. Did not know that the Sensates were born on the same day. How would I describe myself… Give me a few seconds…. I am determined, ambitious and real. I can’t hide who I am and I am definitely real.

Definitely there is lot of violence going on in the prison system. We wanted to show the world that the people in prisons should be treated with respect. They are not animals. Not everyone that is in prison is a murderer, a rapist or has done awful things. A lot of people are there because of money, they were just trapped in the system. A lot of innocent people are also in prison. A show like OITNB is important, and I think that we are making a difference and people no longer judge the one behind bars like they used to do. People need to be treated with respect, they need better food and better living conditions. Everything you see in our show is reality and I am very proud that we can show all this and make a difference… You are also a business woman and you've recently opened a Spa called Chillhouse in New York… Look, NY is hectic. Cyndi (Ramirez, my partner) and I just wanted to create a place for girls to come, to hang out, to have coffee and a glass of champagne while getting their nails done or getting a massage. Things are going great in NY and we want to expand also to Miami and L.A. soon. Let's talk now abiut your personal life. You are now living a beautiful love story with an artist, a painter. How did Ferando Garcia change you? We have both grown a lot. We are both artists and we help each other become the artists we are meant to be. I didn’t

Born and raised in California in a household of eight siblings, Talitha Bateman has quickly become a new young star to watch. Passionate about animals and being healthy, the actress will star in Annabelle: Creation in theaters August 11th. She shares details about upcoming projects and why being in Annabelle is on her bucket list. Tell us about your upcoming films. Do you find it hard to juggle several projects at the same time ? Annabelle Creation: August 11th, Geostorm: October 20th, So B. it: October 6th and Vengeance-A Love Story which comes out sometime this Fall. Then in 2018 I can be seen in Simon vs The Homo Saipan Agenda. All these films are very unique and I learned different things from each project. Annabelle allowed me to go through huge transformations as 'Janice'.She started out physically frail but tough. She goes through tremendous changes and lets just say where she ends up is not what expected. In So B. It, as 'Heidi' I also had a character evolution. This feisty girl who was always content to not ask questions about her identity suddenly had an awakening that led her on a physical and emotional journey of self discovery. In Geostorm, I am a young girl who is worried about her risk taking Dad played by Gerard Butler, who is about to go up in space to fix a satellite and prevent an environmental disaster. In Vengeance my character enlists the help of Nicolas Cage's character to gain justice for her mom, whom she witnessed being gang raped. And finally in Simon, my character 'Nora' shows love and support to her big brother 'Simon' played by Nick Robinson, when he is forced to reveal something he's been keeping private to his family. Her love and adoration for him shines through and I am honored to be able to portray that. In these films, I have had the extraordinary opportunity to work with gifted, award winning directors and actors. While I have done some projects back to back, I’ve never had to juggle more than one project at the same time. I’ve always had at least a couple of days to prepare for my next project. ... AVAILABLE IN ALL 7 KINGDOMS 2017 is not even half finished, and it's already proven to be the year of a lifetime for Nathalie Emmanuel. In April, the 28-year-old British actress watched as her film The Fate of the Furious became the highest-grossing opening of all time -- even surpassing Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This July her blockbuster fantasy series, Game of Thrones, returns for its seventh season on HBO. And having recently returned home from shooting a cameo in Maze Runner: The Death Cure in dreamy South Africa, Nathalie is embarking on an exciting new chapter in her career. BELLO caught up with Nathalie by phone and she gave us an overview of what's coming up ...

DANIEL SHARMAN A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO SURVING THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE by Brent Lambert

I recently spoke with Daniel by phone, as he and his fellow crew had just wrapped shooting on season three of Fear The Walking Dead. He shared with BELLO his thoughts on the nature of morality, his love of Africa, and the top five things he would bring to a deserted island if a real zombie apocalypse ever broke out.

After a couple of dropped cell phone calls, I finally reached Daniel Sharman on the phone. He was minutes away from the U.S.-Mexico border on the way back to L.A. after seven months in Mexico shooting season three of Fear The Walking Dead, where he plays the role of Troy Otto. "Mexico is beautiful, and the people are so kind and generous," he said. "It's a great place to shoot, and it's only three hours out of L.A."

darkness is hidden inside all human beings, ready to emerge in the most dire of circumstances. "I think everybody has a dark side when they're thrown into situations of survival," he says. "But Troy is a mimic -- he is able to mimic emotion, and mimic empathy. He's a really good watcher of people and behavior, which helps him survive. But internally, he's become so twisted from such a traumatic upbringing. I never wanted to make him a psychopath -- I wanted It was a bittersweet day for Daniel be- him to have a lot of vulnerability, too. cause after so many months with such It's such a grey area, and I really wanta tight crew it was hard to say goodbye. ed to explore that." The trend of right-wing populism that has emerged recently is also being addressed in our show. For example, many people in the real world are starting to feel a lot like the Clarks -- like they suddenly don't know the country that they live in -- whether it be Brexit in the U.K., or the right-wing movement in the U.S." Now that shooting has wrapped, Daniel is looking forward to a well deserved break. "I'm traveling to Africa for a month backpacking with my brother, and taking some time off to relax." But his African adventure will also be filled with many opportunities to give back. "I'm doing some work there with Oxfam and Action Against Hunger. It will be good to be there, work in some refugee camps, and help raise some awareness." And a little awareness will definitely go a long way. "85% of Americans aren't aware that there are famines in South Sudan and the Middle East," he says. After seven months immersed in a fictional zombie apocalypse, Daniel has had plenty of time to consider how he would handle a real one if it ever came to be.

I put Daniel through the Zombie Apocalypse Disaster List Challenge, which goes something like this: consider you've been lucky enough to secure safe refuge on a deserted island during the onset of a real zombie apocalypse and you're only allowed to bring one of each of the following. MUSICAL ALBUM: "I would say Astral Weeks by Van Morrison." FOOD: "I grew up in East London, so Indian food for me. Any Indian dish from Brick Lane would in the top range." MOVIE: "One of my absolute favorites which I've watched a million times is Once Upon A Time In The West." OBJECT OF EMOTIONAL OR SENTIMENTAL SIGNIFICANCE: "I would bring a football [i.e. soccer ball]." PERSON: "I'll be killed because there are so many people I want to bring and I'll never get this answer right. But, you know, he would be useless, but I would bring my brother [laughing]." Considering it's been seven years since we first met, I asked Daniel what advice he would give his younger, 24-year-old self if he could go back in time. "I think the main thing I would say is: stop worrying so much -- it will all work out. I spent a lot of time in drama school and afterwards worrying if it would all be alright. That doesn't get you anywhere. Stop being such a nervous wreck -- that would be my biggest advice. You just need to do the very best you can do because you can't control anything else anyways."

ACCESSORIZING INDIVIDUAL STYLE by Steven Carve

The fashion world’s current state is one of individuality. After looking at the runways of the past few seasons, anything goes. From vintage eccentrics to street style silhouettes, trends are difficult to pinpoint. Yet, when an outfit is taken apart, the pieces can be rather basic; a top, a skirt or pants, a coat. It’s the right accessory that makes a difference – the styling dictates the style. Bridging the gap between fashion and fine jewellery, the Monica Vinader brand debuted in 2008 with a variety of mix-andmatch collections, designed to celebrate individuality. Surrounded by arts and objects from her parents' antiques business from a young age, Vinader later graduated from art school in London and immersed herself in the jewellery world. Learning the insand-outs of the business along the way, she and her team currently develop all of the collections in Norfolk, UK, and produce the line in India. Adding to the unique nature of the brand, every stone – which include Amazonite, Dumortierite, Labradorite and Rhodonite – is ethically sourced and cut by hand. With necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings and pendants on offer, pieces are polished, yet still retain an effortlessly casual air. Meant to be styled and stacked in a variety of ways, the Riva collection (influenced by the Italian Riviera, with silhouettes that reflect found objects along the shore), the Siren stacking ring (usually worn in layers, the colorful, faceted stones complement one another), and Fiji bracelets (a one-size-fits-all design that enables engraving on a bar and toggle, with a variety of cords available) are only a few of the wellloved items on offer. And since celebrities are always on top of what’s new, Monica Vinader has cultivated a group of famous fans: Academy Award winners (Charlize Theron, Kate Winslet), A-list entertainers (Justin Bieber, Jennifer Lopez), up-and-coming actresses (Lily James, Chloe Grace Moretz), street stylers (Olivia Palermo and her husband, Johannes Huebl), top models (Kendall Jenner, Arizona Muse) and even royalty (Duchess of Cambridge). But it’s not all about bold-face names. With their initial desire of creating items to be personalized to the wishes of the wearer, Monica Vinader requests to have their looks curated by hashtagging #mymv on Instagram; another community of style stars. With an award as Brand of the Year at the UK Jewellery Awards under its belt, Monica Vinader hasn’t rested on its laurels. In fact, popularity has increased with its own boutiques in the UK and China as well as extensive e-commerce channels and stockists at global luxury retailers including Harrods, Selfridges and NetA-Porter. Now everyone is able to express their individuality with Monica Vinader jewellery.
