FEBRUARY 2018 I am so happy to finally be back to Los Angeles after 2 weeks of traveling through Europe. I enjoyed Paris, and Belgrade immensely, but February is always one of the most important months of the year for BELLO; specially with so much going on, on all fronts. First let me start by inviting you all to get tickets to Autism Speaks’ Charity Gala on the 24th, happening right here in Los Angeles. We are aligning some great entertainment, and our exclusive gift bags will be worth over $500, not to mention of course that this is all for a good cause: to raise much needed awareness to autism and contribute as much as possible to this noble charity. February also is right in the middle of Awards season, always very rich on original content, either movies or TV shows, so make sure to check out www.bellomag.com for some of our favorite picks of the year so far. Shanola Hampton is covering issue 163, and is also our main reason for watching SHAMELESS (we at BELLO are all obsessed). She is smart, funny, gorgeous, and VERY talented. We had such a great time styling her for this issue, and Arthur Galvao did a great job capturing the fun soul that lives inside of her. Brace your self for another issue coming out in 2 weeks, and heres a little secret: some of our featured talent will be at our charity gala. So GO to our Instagram, and get your tickets. Ciao Alek

ELOISE MUMFORD: FIFTY SHADES OF EXPLORATION by Brent Lambert
Actors live incredibly unique lives, especially considering the fact that the roles and characters they portray end up becoming major, teachable life chapters for them. For Eloise Mumford, playing Kate Kavanagh in the Fifty Shades film series has been rewarding in this very sense -- and then some. BELLO chatted with Eloise about her Fifty Shades journey, as well as her love of mother nature, the power of sexual discovery, and making the world a better place.

You've been with the Fifty Shades family for a while now. When did this adventure first begin for you? It began four years ago in November 2013. It's crazy how fast time has flown by. The subject nature of the films has likely led to some interesting brushes with fans. What's the most surreal encounter you've ever had with a fan? You know what's been so amazing about this whole project? Going into it, it wasn't what I expected at all, but it turns out the majority of the fans are women. So it's primarily a female-based fan group, and honestly it's been such a blast. They've been incredibly supportive and very kind. It's always surreal to have someone think that they know me, and it happens quite a lot. They think that they've met me because I play a good friend in the movies, so they recognize me as such. Most of the time I just go along with it and pretend that I'm their friend (laughing). Everyone's been so wonderful, and it's such an international fanbase, too, which has been a real thrill. How would you say the Fifty Shades films have changed the American conversation about sex and the sexual experience at large? I've thought a lot about that. It's been really interesting to witness how a sexual, romantic story told from a female point of view -- especially four years ago -- felt very fresh and very groundbreaking in a lot of ways. So when the box office numbers came in for the first film, which was written by a woman, directed by a woman, and
21
told from a woman's point of view, it was very exciting because it sent a message that we need more films like this. Culturally speaking, this has been the most important part of this experience for me. As far as the research you've done for your character, Kate, through the years, what's the most fascinating discovery you've made about her or the subject matter in general? When I began to look at Kate and search for the most compelling elements of her character, I looked mostly at the idea of friendship. Luckily I have a lot of great friends of my own who helped me in that regard. I feel like I've kind of been running a parallel storyline in my own life similar to Kate's. Over the last four years I've gone through some crazy romantic ups and downs in the course of filming these movies, and my friends have been there for me and my relationships with each of them have gotten so much stronger because of it. For me it's not so much intellectually interesting as it is interesting from a heart-level perspective. It's amazing how powerful a friendship can become when it's built on mutual support instead of competition. I think that's what's so lovely about Ana and Kate's friendship. Whereas some friendships can sometimes have a competition element built into them, that's not the case with these two. With Kate, I didn't have to get into any of the sexual situations that happen in the film. But in Fifty Shades Freed she does get to have her own little love story. Having said that, most of my time researching was spent meditating on the nature of true friendship. I read a study once which showed how
February 2018
the practice of S&M has been proven to significantly strengthen a relationship. Have you ever heard from fans about how the films have helped them reach some personal breakthroughs in their own relationships? I think what's so delightful about these films is that they encourage people to do the things that turn them on. I think that's a really important conversation and realization to have. There are many things out there that turn us on, and the kind of magic that happens when we're in a romantic relationship with someone is very specific to each of us. It doesn't have to follow some sort of cookie cutter concept of what a relationship should look like. So for me, having a conversation about what romance and sexuality at its very best should look like, is not about reaching the end of the conversation because it's a conversation that has no end. It's constantly evolving. It's exciting to be part of a project that inspires people to discover what really turns them on, regardless of what anyone else might think about it. What do your high school friends think about everything that's happened to you? I was just hanging out with one of my best friends from high school the other day. She just had a baby, and she also works as an event planner. We were talking about it and that was always her dream in school. That was always the thing that she wanted to do, and I always wanted to be an actor. It's pretty incredible that we are each doing what we always dreamed of doing.
Bello
I'm interested in your work with Habitat for Humanity. How did that start and where would you like to see it go? When I first moved to LA I was going through various phases of loneliness. As an actor you have a lot of time in between projects, even if you're auditioning and going to lots of meetings. So years ago I started volunteering with Habitat for Humanity when I was in between projects. I would go to the same house in Compton almost everyday. Anyone can do it anytime. As I've gotten busier I haven't had as much time to devote to it, but I'm excited to get back with it again. I like to feel like I'm making some sort of physical contribution, which is such a wonderful feeling when a family gets to move into that house. Your Instagram tells me you really are a lover of the outdoors -- lots of camping and nature in your life. Who inspired you the most in that department? My mom was an Outward Bound instructor in the 70s, which is an outdoor instruction program, so we went on backpacking trips and hikes all the time when I was a kid. And I still do quite often with my parents. I'm from Washington State so it's a prime place to be for all that. I've spent a lot of time in majestic nature and I absolutely love it. I don't know what I would do without it.
Bello
Speaking of your mom, I noticed on your Instagram that she gave you a copy of Courage Is Contagious. What was your favorite take home message from that book? I feel like the inside of me is a shrine to Michelle Obama. I think she is so incredible and inspiring. Her strength and grace and vision about what it means to be a woman and a citizen is truly beautiful. I love her. I like to do a game called Career Blender Challenge, where you take two of your favorite series or movies, and mash them together to create an original series or film in which you star. Which two would you mash together and what would it be called?
It's almost Valentine's Day. Imagine your hubby or boyfriend were to whisk you away on a jet to your dream destination, and as you're taking off he tells you that you get to pick the place. Where would you send your plane and why? Oh wow, I wish you could make that a reality for me (laughing)! I would love to go to Argentina and Patagonia. I absolutely love the outdoors and camping, and there's something so incredible about that part of the world. I've always wanted to go there.
It would be called Handmaid's Crown and it's a mashup of The Handmaid's Tale and The Crown. It's about a handmaid in the Wild West who works at a miner's hotel back in the day, and she's a feminist living in a very non-feminist world. She feels very isolated in her own world, and is constantly trying to do what's best, but it's not necessarily what she truly wants to do in her heart. She feels a responsibility to do what's right and is surrounded by others who don't necessarily have her best interests in mind. Is her destiny something that is preordained, or is she fully in the driver's seat?

Bello
Your new movie Step Sisters is now streaming on Netflix. Talk about your character Danielle and how you prepared for the role? Danielle is the Queen Bee Tyrant of the Sigma Beta Beta sorority. She’s egotistical, cut-throat, and rules with an iron fist. But when her chapter’s charter is in danger of being revoked, she begrudgingly has to work alongside Jamilah in order to rehabilitate the image of the sorority by competing in a charity step show. And along the way, the audience gets to see how a wider cultural awareness and the sisterhood that emerges among the girls really changes her. My preparation for the film was actually super limited. I was the last person to be cast, and all of the other girls were already in Atlanta learning the routines. I literally got the call (while I was in the gym no less) of like, “Heeeey, you booked this job and your flight leaves in six hours,” and then it was all about playing catch up. I landed and went straight to work with our choreographers who were, bless their hearts, SO patient with us. Let me also add that none of us were really dancers. It wasn’t even part of the auditioning process. So the first week was essentially boot camp. We stepped about six hours a day, licked our wounds at night, and were back at it the next morning. The film gives us a glimpse at sorority life in America. What would you describe as the biggest take-home message of the film? At first glance, the movie looks like a fun, silly, popcorn flick about college life and stepping, with a tone in the vein of Bring It On or Pitch Perfect. And it has a lot of that, sure. But it is also extremely self-aware. The stepping and the collegiate humor are vessels for some pretty deep themes about cultural exchange, recognizing individual prejudices, and the strength in sisterhood. I’m drawn to movies that use humor as a device for a greater message. It sort of candy coats a pill that maybe people aren’t ready to swallow. You’re extending a message without preaching. It makes the roots of the story more accessible.

What were your thoughts on sorority life before you started work on Step Sisters, and what are your thoughts on it now? I was never involved in the Greek system during college, and frankly I kind of rolled my eyes at it. I didn’t have many strong female relationships growing up. I went to a rather bougie private middle school and I assumed sororities were basically a replica of that experience -- a breeding ground for narcissism and unhealthy competition with other girls and would ultimately end in self-loathing. But one of the things I learned during this movie was how, historically speaking, sororities were built to provide community and sisterhood, and to create a safe space for those involved. Now, how they’ve evolved or devolved is a case-by-case basis. Would I go back to my college Freshman year and join one? Probably not. But I do have a greater appreciation for the history of the organizations. Also, now that I’m older and I have my ride-or-die girl gang, I recognize how much those bonds have enriched my life. I’m supportive of any organization that has sisterhood at its core and has the ability to promote girls championing other girls. Supportive sisterhood is front and centre right now with the #MeToo movement. Do you feel this movement has already effected permanent positive change, or will that change only come with constant #MeToo pressure applied every single day for decades to come? It’s a little bit of both. Hollywood has changed forever. Between the waves of allegations that united us, the shared sorrow of the #MeToo movment, the momentum created by Times Up…there has been a seismic ripple in our industry. It’s a historic moment, and I do believe that it has and will continue to birth permanent change. But then at the same time, I also have to take a step back and recognize the bubble that I live in, being both in the industry and also just living in Los Ange-
Bello
les in general. The past election was proof enough of this bubble. #MeToo is not a conversation that is happening everywhere. There are parts of the country that aren’t having these conversations. And I think that is the difficult part of the mission. How can we be agents of change outside of our bubble? And that is where applying the pressure, as you say, and not letting the cause be just a hashtag that fizzles out and no longer “trends” comes into play. This has to go beyond a trend. You co-starred alongside Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts in the film Secret In Their Eyes. What were some things you learned during that experience working with such huge icons? The funny thing about working with “icons” is that I often find they are the most down-to-earth and genuinely kind people to work with. They aren’t posturing or trying to prove their status. That is always a lovely reminder. Just be kind. And always learn people’s names. It’s such an easy thing to do, and it goes a long way. Especially in an industry that more often than not feels like a giant revolving door. Calling someone by their name is an example of respect that does not go unnoticed. I noticed on your Instagram that you recently became a homeowner. What was that experience like, and what advice would you give to any prospective buyers out there? Oh wow. Well, look, it’s super rewarding to finally be a homeowner. I’ve dreamed of it my whole life, and it is certainly a milestone. But real talk, it’s also a daily source of my anxiety. My husband and I bought a fixer-upper because we believed we were Chip and Joanna Gaines. Spoiler: we aren’t. Or maybe we could be with the budget of a major network behind us. But again, not our situation. The renovation was rocky, to say the least. But, and I do mean this honestly, I look around our home at least once a day and I’m truly proud of

what we are creating and the memories we are making here. It’s a special feeling. My advice to prospective buyers would be to just remember that it should be a joyful process. It won’t be at times. Many times, really. (Side note, we lost out on like six homes before an offer was accepted. It feels like crap). But just keep doing your thing and try to remember the joy. As you look back on 2017 and look forward to this new year ahead, what was the most important lesson you learned from last year that you want to apply to your life in 2018? To remember that goals can’t always be achieved in a year. I hate Januarys. Always have. And I think I realized this year why I hate Januarys so much. Because January is when we are supposed to be setting our intentions for the upcoming year. But ultimately, you just end up reflecting on what you didn’t accomplish the year before. I have a tendency to beat myself up over that, and going into 2018 I’ve made a conscious effort to not put that type of pressure on myself. Imagine you won the Powerball lottery of $500 million, and suddenly you never had to work another day of your life. What do you think you would devote the rest of your life to? I’d still work. Am I doing it wrong? I just really love my job! But I would have a house on Kauai. Valentine's Day is right around the corner. What is your definition of true romance? True love is allowing someone to take the first bite of your food until the day you die. I don’t remember where I heard that, but I can’t think of anything more romantic.

AS INSTAGRAM CONTINUES TO GROW INTO ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL MEDIA PLATFORMS IN THE WORLD, IT'S PROVING TIME AND TIME AGAIN WHY IT'S SUCH A GAME-CHANGER IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY. IT'S NOW POSSIBLE TO BUILD A BIGGER FANBASE ON INSTAGRAM THAN SOME CELEBS ACHIEVE IN AN ENTIRE CAREER IN HOLLYWOOD, AND NOBODY HAS PROVEN THIS MORE THAN SEAN O'DONNELL. THE INSTAGRAM SUPERSTAR IS NOW MAKING WAVES ON THE BIG SCREEN AND THE SMALL SCREEN, WHICH IS WHY HE'S BELLO'S NEWEST IT GUY. ______________ Tell us about your product line, HAPPY. What was the inspiration behind it, and where do you see it going in the future? The inspiration behind HAPPY was to have a line that resembled my mindset and overall approach to life, and making the best of what life throws at you. Hopefully I see it expanding with more and more products and maybe one day collaborating with other brands and doing little pop-ups. What was it like working on Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn? How much will we get to see of you on the show? Honestly, it was really surreal. My entire life I grew up watching Nickelodeon and now I can say that I, myself have been on one of their shows and that's pretty cool to me. You will see me pretty heavily throughout that episode. As a budding entrepreneur, what's the most important piece of wisdom you've learned from the experts around you? There is no "correct" way to doing things. Sometimes you're going to have to make a left turn, and then maybe a right, and it might feel like you're all over the place but I promise that's what it will take—there is no one straight path to what you desire. If we were to jump ten years into the future, describe where you would love to be in your career? Honestly, I would really love to be in business with my wife, if I'm so fortunate to do so. I think it would be amazing to have a business of some sort that I could share and build with her, and watch it flourish together. Do you have any self-imposed rules for your Instagram diet? Or are you on there all day long? I actually just chuckled out loud at this question (in a good way). It usually surprises people how little I am actually on my phone. I really try as hard as I can to make it less intrusive in my everyday life, probably too much so. Wouldn't be the worst thing for me to spend more time focusing on it because it is a very large part of my work life, so I'm trying to get better at being on there more often. BELLO: Valentine's Day is right around the corner. What's the sexiest quality you find most attractive in someone you're smitten with? SEAN: Acceptance. I know it sounds simple but feeling completely vulnerable and having someone embrace that is a very special thing. After that has happened then everything someone does, down to the way they breath, just makes your heart stop because you're so enamored with them. 51

SITTING DOWN WITH LANDRY BENDER, THE LATEST CHARACTER ON THE NETFLIX SERIES FULLER HOUSE, WE DISCUSSED HER LIFE INSIDE THE HOUSE AND OUT. FILMING AS THE NEWEST ADDITION TO THE CAST HAS BEEN AN INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE FOR LANDRY THUS FAR. AT FIRST, SHE DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT. SHE GREW UP WATCHING THE OLDER SEASONS OF FULL HOUSE, AND NOW HAVING SEEN FULLER HOUSE; SHE WAS NOT SURE HOW SHE WOULD FIT IN.
“Immediately when I stepped on the set, it was like a family.”
Dress and Jacket Luciana Balderrama Earrings AMYO
The original cast of Full House has known each other for 30 years, so Landry could not picture herself joining the crew, but everyone on set welcomed her in with open arms. Landry enjoys her role on the show because she counteracts the dynamic of the other characters. Her favorite part about working on Fuller House is the live audience. Never having performed in front of a live studio audience, Landry constantly forgets how passionate the fans of the show are. She loves seeing the immediate response from them while they film. Landry is hopeful for a season 4 Fuller House, as they are wrapping up the end of Season 3: Part 2, right now. “After we see the reception from the latest season, is when we will know.” Outside of Fuller House, Landry wishes to get into more film. “I would love to play more dramatic characters, which are a stretch for me and a little opposite from myself, but I’d love that challenge.” She would love to be part of a movie-musical and of course Broadway, bringing up the live audience once again, and how she craves for it. The idea of playing different characters and performing for people is what attracted Landry to the industry in the first place. Landry desires to play a real life person, whether they are still living or have passed, she believes it to be a challenging role because of the expectations and legacy behind it. “It would be an honor if I could play someone like Audrey Hepburn.” At only four years old, Landry remembers the exact moment she fell in love with the industry. After having seen Annie on Broadway, in her hometown of Arizona, she knew she wanted to give acting a try. “I was jealous of the girls on stage, I knew it was what I wanted do.” The culture shock being from Arizona did not affect Landry too much. She moved to Los Angeles when she was nine. Looking at her friend’s from back home pictures of them at “normal high schools” is unusual for Landry because she has a different life in LA, but she wouldn’t change it for a second. “I love Los Angeles, it is amazing and I’m comfortable here.” Outside of acting, Landry has other passions. Fashion is a huge part of Landry’s life; she would enjoy getting into the entrepreneurship side of it. “I just love creating.” Landry explains that whether its screenwriting, directing, or becoming an author she is up for trying it all. 61
