APRIL 2018 The past year has certainly been one of transformation and evolution for BELLO. Look back at where we started more than a decade ago in Paris, we can see that all of the challenges that we've faced have been worth it. My life motto has always been, "Never compete. Do what you love and do it the best that you can. But most of all, never give up." For me, that is the definition of success, regardless of what you do and how much money that you make. This month, Stephane Marquet, my husband of 20 years and Creative Director at BELLO, became a U.S. citizen. Being present for his oath ceremony reminded me of how amazing life is and just how incredible this country can be. On that same day, more than 4,000 people from all around the world stood together after Judge Steve Kim gave a breathtaking and inspirational speech. Each one of those individuals had a different path and a different life story, but shared one commonality - the yearning for a better life.

As our cover star Candice Patton, from the hit CW show "The Flash," stated in her interview, "Often we think that we can't have it all and it stops us from going after our dreams." You never know when your own life will inspire someone else - that moment may even go by unnoticed by you! Spring may be about change, but change doesn't necessarily mean that you move on from what you think may be bad for you. In our society, we often confuse true happiness with a 'challenge-less' state. My experience has taught me to embrace these challenges and to learn from them rather than to neglect them. When you try to outrun your problems, they have a habit of catching up with you and this is never pleasant. Social media often shows us a false representation of perfection that we then seek to achieve for ourselves, neglecting who we truly are and what we really value in life. Remember - never compare, never compete. We can all have a happy and successful life if we accept the fact that life is about imperfections and diversity. Alek

In a world that has become so topsy-turvy with real-life villains and chatter of nuclear apocalypse, it's easy to forget that love is the greatest superpower of all. It's no coincidence that during these trying times we tend to rely more on our mythological heroes to give us hope, and to serve as a reminder that the best is always waiting for us on the horizon. One of these modern myths is The Flash (CW) which began its fourth season this past October. BELLO had the chance to catch up with one of its stars, Candice Patton, who plays the Iris West, the wife of The Flash.

HEROES & HONEYMOONS

Having recently married The Flash so early in the season, one might assume that the honeymoon won't last too long in the high-drama world of Central City. But according to Candice, the forecast for season 4 is steady-as-she-goes in the marriage department. "Barry (The Flash) and Iris are pretty stable for the rest of the season. They do have some small relationship bumps, just in terms of working together and figuring out the dynamics of that, but I think we can hope for a long and healthy marriage between Iris and Barry."

With Valentine's Day right around the corner, we asked Candice if there's any one couple out there that inspires her the most when it comes to her own goals for a loving relationship. "The first one that comes to mind is Barack and Michelle Obama," she says. "Barack is kind of a superhero in his own right, who had a very heavy burden on his shoulders and handled it with complete grace, and gave so much credit to his wife for being by his side and helping him become the man he is. It's a relationship that I really admire."

As with all strong relationships, each person tends to bring out the very best in the other. So how does this mutual enhancement play out for the CW's favorite married super-couple? "I think Iris definitely keeps Barry grounded. He's dealing with so many superhuman elements everyday of his life, and Iris is a grounding force for him and she keeps him down to earth. And the other way around, Barry inspires Iris to fight the good fight and protect the people of the city in her own way, in the same way that Barry puts his life on the line everyday. I think she's incredibly inspired by that."

So what would be the dream Valentine's Day experience for Candice, from morning to night? "All of it would have to be super chill. Maybe start with breakfast at a cafe, then a massage, then Netflix and takeout for dinner (laughing)!"

As one of the CW's most successful series, we asked Candice what she feels is the 'secret sauce' that has given The Flash so much longevity. "We're in our fourth season, and I think the show is still unique in its own amazing way. We aim for heart, humanness and spectacle, whereas I think a lot of the other shows can be quite dark." She adds, "What's great about our show is it has so many great relationships that have so much heart. And I think the humor and heart combo is really true to the comic." Fans have been waiting for Barry and Iris's wedding for some time now, so we were curious how the reaction has been from viewers. "I think fans have been over the moon about it since it happened, and leading up to it, too," she says. "Sure, fans were disappointed that there was an invasion of Nazis and we didn't have a 'proper, proper' wedding, but at the end of the day fans are super happy that we finally had our fairytale ending and ended up together."

In the same way that Candice looks to the Obamas for inspiration, there are many young girls who look to her for the same. With this in mind, I asked her to talk about her work creating the SHETHORITY project. "Once, me and my good friend Caity Lotz (Sara from Legends of Tomorrow) were hiking in Vancouver, and we were talking about how we want to give back more to our fans, especially at the conventions around the world where we get to meet them in person. They wanted to have more of a dialogue with the younger girls, rather than a quick autograph and goodbye. "We wanted to give back to them, and help inspire them to be strong," she says, "so we started SHETHORITY. It began as an Instagram page where we give advice on certain issues with women, and we encourage our fans to upload videos of what they're dealing with and going through, and it's had a huge response. We're hoping to expand that into a lot of different avenues going forward." (visit www.instagram.com/shethority/)

Of course, Candice's platform is owed in great part to The Flash creator and producer, Greg Berlanti, who launched The Flash, Supergirl, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow, to name just a few. We asked her if she's gotten to know Greg as a friend, and what she's learned the most from him. "Yes, he's a very, very busy man who has Iris and the Flash are one of the very rare married superhero couples his hands in a lot of different pots, which is why he's so successful. I've gotten to know him personally and recently went to his wedding out there, but not all husbands have a superpower like Barry. What, to Robbie Rogers. He's such a wonderful person." She adds, "Greg is per chance, would it take for a 'regular' husband to be a someone who's not afraid to have it all: a marriage, a child, a career, superhero hubby? "Sharing the housework -- that's a big one!" she laughs. "When your wife comes home and the dishes are done, you're massive success -- all of it. He's not afraid to go after everything he wants and figure it out as he goes. I find that really encouraging, on the right track! It's a true testament to Barry though, where he feels like he can have both. Unlike Batman, which is such a brooding because often we think we can't have it all and it stops us from going after our dreams." character who spends much of his time alone, Barry relies on Iris and his family in general to be the superhero that he is."

BELLO: Where were you when you got the big news that you had been chosen as a 2018 Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, and how did you celebrate?! OLIVIA: I thought I was just trying on clothes with my dear friends at Bollare until they knocked on the door and said they wanted to talk to me right away. As I was basically naked, I haphazardly threw on the clothes closest to me--a polka dot blouse (which I can now say with some confidence probably shouldn't be paired with a corduroy skirt). As I opened the dressing room door, Zack said I had to come outside and Ottilia started buttoning up my top and tying the never-ending belt around my waist. Still, none of this seemed too out of the ordinary until Zack said "pick up my phone." On the other end, MJ Day (the Creative Director) & the SI Swimsuit team were waiting to tell me that my dreams were about to come true--that I would get to join the ranks of Kate Upton and be in the next swim issue! I was not entirely sure if I was dreaming or if this was real life for the majority of the conversation. Luckily it WAS and my boyfriend and I went out to my favorite restaurant that night to celebrate with a margarita. BELLO: The SI swimsuit model is such a huge icon in the world of beauty. What does this achievement mean to you personally, and what role do you see members of this elite club having in 2018 and beyond, especially when it comes to young women? OLIVIA: I have always been a fan of the SI Swimsuit Issue. The issue has historically celebrated women and helped models throughout history to launch their careers into becoming full-blown empires. I have looked up to so many of the women who have come before me: Tyra Banks, Christie Brinkley, Chrissy Teigen, Brooklyn Decker. I see being part of that incredible legacy is a chance to take my career to the next level and build the kind of platform where I can really make a difference in the world using my voice while I keep chasing dreams. BELLO: What is your definition of true beauty? OLIVIA: As I grow older I see more and more that the most beautiful people are those that are in touch with themselves, aware of who they are and how they can make the world a little better. My idea of beauty has transformed in the past decade. Things that used to seem so important now feel so trivial. Beauty can be enhanced by physical displays (like makeup, hair, etc.) but it comes from a sense of knowing who you are, an inner confidence and respect of yourself and of your place in the world. BELLO: You're also a burgeoning actress as well. Who would you define as your biggest role models in the world of acting, and whose body of work would you say you admire the most? OLIVIA: I grew up going to the movies every weekend and watching TV with my family every night. I look up to so many actors and study different ones for different reasons. Some are so incredible at comedy, others drama, and some can seamlessly shift gears. Those that can truly transform inspire me most of all; for example, I love watching everything Will Smith does. He has become a multitude of characters through the years, he holds nothing back, and crosses every genre. Anna Kendrick has recently impressed me in the same way. She is ageless on screen and can jump from comedy to drama and back again and hook you into the story instantly. BELLO: You have an enormous Instagram following. Do you approach it from a creative/artistic point of view, or would you consider it more a frivolous hobby?

Bello

OLIVIA: I was not one to jump quickly on the social media bandwagon and I am still a slow adaptor as they keep updating. But I did see that Instagram can open doors in the entertainment industry and its a huge opportunity to let people know what really matters to you. Captions to me are key in sharing who I am with all my followers but only recently I am starting to get into the aesthetic of it all and I have started taking more photos of things that inspire me. I haven't been quick to share my photography yet as I know it will be a stretch from my typical content but I am hoping to keep finding ways to grow creatively and share that growth online. BELLO: What are some of your biggest longterm dreams and goals in life? OLIVIA: I would love to be a regular on a TV show--thats the ultimate dream. A side-hustle I would love to explore would be to partner with a brand to create my own fitness clothes. I am so specific about what I want to wear that it would be a dream to just create it and hopefully it's exactly what others are lacking from their closets as well. And I would love to start my own fundraiser. I currently work with several different causes so I am not sure how to just focus on one, but I know that I could make a difference if I did find that one thing that I could really lend my voice to. BELLO: I've heard it said that a healthy mind and a healthy body go handin-hand. You clearly have the healthy body element under control, but what sort of regimen do you have to keep your mind in great shape, too? OLIVIA: I think it’s crucial to keep learning and growing. I read everyday, I go see almost every film that hits theaters, I go to weekly acting classes, and have attended workshops across all genres of self-realization. I also am trying to develop a regular meditation practice and one day hopefully get into yoga to merge the healthy mind, healthy body practice. BELLO: We've all heard of Oprah's Favorite Things, but what are some of Olivia's Favorite Things these days? OLIVIA: My favorite book of all time is The Alchemist, and my favorite show right now is This is Us. I recently cut back on coffee and so I can't stop drinking tea throughout the day: black tea for breakfast, green tea in the afternoon, and chamomile or peppermint before bed. I am living in Alo Yoga clothes because comfort is key! Favorite restaurant is Gracias Madre. It's vegan Mexican food and it is heavenly! And I got a Dagne Dover bag from Bandier at the beginning of the year and I can't remember what life was like without it. It's a perfect travel carry-on and great for me to take my computer, a change of clothes, and snacks for long days on set. BELLO: What are you most excited about in the year ahead? OLIVIA: Acting. I have pursued several different dreams since moving to LA 7 years ago. I reached the peak of my pageant career as Miss USA, reached the height of my modeling career by appearing in Sports Illustrated, and now I am ready--more than ever--to focus on my ultimate dream of reaching that acting dream and working on a show regularly. Fingers crossed! BELLO: Summer is right around the corner...any big plans?! OLIVIA: Yes, my sister is getting married! This summer I will be busy balancing work and trying to spend as much time as possible with my sweet sister, Allie, before she gets married in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. This is my first time being a maid-of-honor and as it's my sister I will be doing my best to make sure it is the summer of her dreams! I successfully helped her “say yes to her dress” so hopefully the planning will all be easy now that she made that critical decision.

CHAZ DEAN by Brent Lambert @FEELguide

Meet Chaz Dean, the renowned founder of WEN Hair & Body Care, celebrity hairstylist to Gwyneth Paltrow and many other superstars, and proud papa of three of the most beautiful dogs you have ever seen. BELLO was lucky enough to spend some time with Chaz at his stunning home in the Hills in February, just a few days before the spectacular Autism Speaks gala fundraiser in Beverly Hills, of which Chaz was a major supporter. We had a chance to talk about many things including: the nature of true beauty, the biggest misconceptions about the world of glamour, and the best sources of unconditional love.

I've been involved with autism with Holly Robinson Peete for almost 18 years now," Chaz tells us as he reflects on the very first autism fundraisers he participated in with Holly. "I think only the first year we were there it was for another illness -- Parkinson's Disease for her father, and sadly he has since passed. Then when her twins were born with autism she founded her foundation. So it's been 17 years I've been helping with her foundation." For his entire life, Chaz has been working hard to make the world a better place, and that definitely includes his building of a beauty empire which has helped countless women and men realize how they can be as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside. We asked him how satisfying it must feel each time he turns the chair around for the big reveal. "It is really rewarding, and that's why I love doing what I do," he says. "And it's ironic that you just asked me that, because earlier this morning for FOX we did a makeover. It was a Valentine's Day makeover for a very deserving mother of two who is super busy. She's trying to run her business, her pilates studio, and she works around the clock, and her husband works 12 hours a day -- so there's not much 'me' time for her." The unsuspecting mom was a newbie to the world of beauty and glamour. "In her whole life she had only colored her hair once, and it was with a box color. So we gave her

Bello

a great new color. And she was like a lot of my clients: sometimes they come in thinking they want something, and they explain it to me. That's when I tell them, 'OK, if you want me to do what I think is best for you, here's what I would do.' And they will usually tell me to go ahead and do it. I feel lucky that my clients trust me and respect me to do something that goes against their own intuition." So how many of his clients let Chaz run with his creative intuition? "I would say 99% let me do it, but the ones that don't let me run with my vision, well, the result ends up in a place they shouldn't be. It's the same thing with the makeover we just did. She thought she wanted to go lighter, and as soon as I saw her I knew we had to go darker. And I explained why -- I said her hair color is the same as her skin tone and it was making her look rundown. As soon as I speak the truth they understand the reasons. She said how she never thought she would have looked good in darker hair because she thought it would make her look older than she is. But it actually does the opposite." One of the biggest misconceptions about hairstyling is that going blonde is always a good choice. "A lot of the people who sit in my chair are blonde-a-holics. When I dig deeper with these clients I ask them: 'Are you intentionally blonde? How did this happen?' And

issue #167

56

many will answer, 'Well, I just go to the salon and this is what they do to me.' It's because people don't communicate, or they don't have thorough consultations. It's all about skin tone, lifestyle, eye color, and maintenance of your hair."

like our exfoliating lip treatment that doesn't contain sugars (sugar treatments tear up the skin and your lips take a toll). Its exfoliant is a healthy alternative: lemon peel and rice, which is from the seed of black rice."

So how does one know if blonde is the right way to go? "The best two examples I always give are Elizabeth Taylor and Sofia Loren. The older Sofia got, for example, she began to go blonder and it just blended in with her skin tone and it washed her out. She wasn't exotic anymore. Elizabeth Taylor was the same story. A lot of times they do it because they think, 'I'm grey now and if I go blonde it will be less noticeable.' But that's not the case. Sure, it might be a little bit harsh to see the grey coming in, but considering what it does for your overall look, it's much better to stay with what works for your skin tone and eye color."

Chaz also shares some inside information on another of the biggest misconceptions about the world of A-list beauty and glamour. "Even the most beautiful and famous women in the world have insecurities. You wouldn't think it, but they do. It reminds me of that scene in The Help: 'You is smart, you is kind, you is important.' I think if everyone in the world was raised with that kind of positive reinforcement the world would be a much better place. They need to add 'beautiful' to that mantra though. I think it's important. It registered with me when I saw that movie. It was a message the little girl wasn't getting from her family -- she was getting it from the housekeeper. We all need that during our childhood. I've heard our self confidence is programmed within us by the time we're five."

The best way to know if blonde is your color is to look at your skin tone. "Olive skin tones with yellow undertones need to avoid going blonde because it makes you look jaundice and sallow -- not a good look. The Kardashians, on the other hand, can get away with being blonde because they change their makeup to match their hair. They change their skin tone with strong makeup in order to make sure it works well with their new hair color. It's not their natural skin tone. Without the new makeup that accompanies the new color it won't look good -- no matter how beautiful you are. Theycan do it because they have a team around them who will change their skin tone, and that's what people don't realize." For someone who has worked so closely with the world's most beautiful people for nearly 25 years, we thought it was worth asking what inspires him the most these days with regards to beauty? "You would think it would be people, but it's not," Chaz tells us. "It's nature, as you can see around my property. It's the bamboo forest and the lush greenery, etc. These are what inspire me. So when I work on someone's hair I want it to be bouncy, and not stiff or contrived. I want it to be a reflection of the honesty of nature. Then there are designers I love as well, such as Dolce & Gabbana, and Balmain, and so forth. But I'm moreso inspired by nature, and even the colors of nature."

If smart, kind, important and beautiful are some of Chaz's mantras, then another would most definitely be love. Aside from his friends and family, one of the biggest sources of love in Chaz's life are his three sweet and gorgeous labradors. "They fill me with 100% constant unconditional love with no judgement whatsoever. No matter what kind of day you've had, as soon as you come home they're there full of love waiting for you. I mean, I go out to the garage for 5 minutes and when I come back it's like they haven't seen me in a week! I call them my earth angels." His dogs are also an essential part of what he considers to be his 'perfect Sunday.' "My perfect Sunday would be a day spent at home with my angels [his dogs], with the doors and windows open, just chilling. People ask me constantly, 'Hey, do you wanna go for brunch on Sunday?' And I tell them -- it's my only day off! I cherish my Sundays at home with my dogs. It's my perfect Sunday in every way. They make everyday better."

Since he first went into the lab to create his very first product, Chaz has gone on to build a line of more than 500 products. "When I first launched WEN I worked on it for five years first. I wanted it to be perfect on every single hair type, no matter who you were. I launched in November 2000 with Sweet Almond Mint Cleansing Conditioner, which was for every type of hair. It worked on everybody. But it you were to ask me 18 years ago if I could have ever imagined growing from one product to the 570 I have now, I never would have believed it. Also, I've never discontinued a product."

Turns out, all of Chaz's products emerge from a demand from his clients. "Every product I have made comes from a demand from my clients -- whether it's on QVC or from the salon. I listen to my customers. We've also expanded to WEN Kids, to WEN Men, to WEN Pets, to fragrances, to candles. The next expansion is Bella Spirit which is in the skincare family. It's a much more honed in line of products,

The story of the international youth movement starts here in Amsterdam. A band of youth united by their rejection of being defined by international borders. Global connectivity has brought them closer than ever and has spread their culture further and further. They are not homogenous yet they are. They transcend borders and every city is their city. That causes them to feel at home anywhere. The current climate in the world forces them to take a stance and that's why they’re going to take a position by championing their culture and fostering a community of belonging rather than exclusion. Daily Paper explored the idea of transcending expectations, and traveled with it. They were aware that returning to the African tribe as their only inspiration would be to miss an opportunity to explore the creative African movements relevant all over the world today. This led them to push things further, look further, spurring them on to be influenced by contemporary African art. Where the norm is interrupted, thoughts are pushed further, where Daily Paper as a brand is more than clothing, it is a global community of like minded individuals. Founded in 2010, Daily Paper is an Amsterdam based menswear label. Inspired by the founder’s own African heritage and passion for contemporary fashion an alternative path has been found, turning Daily Paper into a well-respected creator of authentic ready-to-wear garments. The menswear label is known for being affected by different African cultures incorporating these influences into modern design with a unique rugged character. Daily Paper’s focus lies in the design of men’s fashion apparel that considers authenticity, with an emphasis on tailoring and an eclectic use of materials. The products are made to compliment the consumer’s passion for individuality and personal style. Devoted to quality garments, fine detailing, culture and overall great designs, Daily Paper stays true to their unique brand aesthetic. https://www.dailypaperclothing.com/

exclusive conversation with

GABRIEL BATEMAN Photography Leo Deveney

G ALTHOUGH GABRIEL BATEMAN IS ONLY 12-YEARS-OLD HE IS ALREADY A HOLLYWOOD VETERAN. THE CALIFORNIA NATIVE HAS BEEN WORKING STEADILY FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS ON SUCH FILMS AS LIGHTS OUT AND ANNABELLE, AS WELL AS SERIES SUCH AS AMERICAN GOTHIC AND STALKER. NOW GABRIEL CAN BE SEEN IN TWO OF HIS BIGGEST PROJECTS TO DATE: THE DANGEROUS BOOK FOR BOYS CREATED BY BRYAN CRANSTON AND GREG MOTTOLA WHICH PREMIERED ON NETFLIX ON MARCH 30, AS WELL AS THE REBOOT OF THE 1974 CLASSIC, BENJI, WHICH IS ALSO STREAMING ON NETFLIX. AS BELLO'S BRAND NEW IT GUY, WE HAD THE CHANCE TO CATCH UP WITH GABRIEL TO TALK ABOUT HIS LIFE, HIS CAREER, AND HIS HUGE FUTURE. by Brent Lambert @FEELguide BELLO: You star in the brand new series The Dangerous Book For Boys about a father who passes away and leaves behind a fantasy-based instruction book of life for his son, played by you. What can you tell us about that book and what you like the most about it? GABRIEL: The book itself is not fantasy-based. It’s really a how-to guide that the father left for his sons when he knew he would not be around to watch them grow up. It’s also the source that triggers Wyatt’s imagination which takes him into a fantasy world where his dad is alive and well and able to help him navigate the things in the book, but more importantly the things in life. That’s really what I like about the book because it is a tool any family could use with their sons and daughters to explore fun things in life and create lifelong memories. BELLO: What was your favorite memory of shooting the show? GABRIEL: There are so many of them. We had fun every day making this show. We made our own films and came up with crazy plans. One the craziest moments was when Erinn Hayes wanted to record slapping me with a waffle and it turned into a waffle fight. BELLO: You also star in the brand new reboot of Benji on Netflix. Is it true what they say about shooting with animals -- it makes filming so much harder? GABRIEL: Benji is very well trained so mostly working with him was easy and very fun. Whenever he was on set, it put everyone in a happy mood. There were, however, occasional scenes where Benji just wanted to do what he wanted to do and they actually made all of us laugh. I wish there was a blooper reel of these times. For instance, there was a scene where Darby Camp and I are tied up and Benji is supposed to rescue us. The idea is that he pulls off the blankets and ropes to get us free. It was the last scene before lunch and we were hungry. But Benji was far too interested in something going on in the other room, so we sat there doing that scene with peanut butter on our faces and on the ropes for quite a while. My character supposed to be very desperate for Benji to pull these ropes off. And after running the scene several times without him cooperating, and my stomach growling for lunch, I really was desperate for him to pull those ropes off. So when you watch the scene, I’m not acting! I wanted to go to lunch HAHA! BELLO: You've been working for years now. How do you manage to find a balance between being a kid and being a career professional at such a young age? GABRIEL: I’ve been acting for over three years now. But I am very much just an average kid. When I’m filming I do school on set and have social activities with the cast when we aren’t working. It’s really my normal. Nothing seems like a balancing act at all. BELLO: Where do you see yourself 5 years from now? GABRIEL: I will be a teenager, hopefully still acting, looking at colleges and planning a future which includes directing and writing and doing what I love. But who has a crystal ball? If you asked me five years ago what I would be doing today, I never would have predicted this. It wasn’t even an idea in my mind. BELLO: Any exciting summer plans on your radar? GABRIEL: Hopefully working on an exciting project, exploring new places, making friends, rock climbing, hiking and archery.

SCORPION CBS

NIKKI CASTILLO Photography Arthur Galvao Beauty by Matthew Cerda Styling Luke Funcheta - Special thanks Maison Privée PR

THOSE FAMILIAR WITH CBS’S “SCORPION” WILL DEFINITELY RECOGNIZE OUR LATEST FEATURE! WHILE CURRENTLY STARTING AS PATTY LOGAN ON CBS’ “SCORPION”, NIKKI CASTILLO, IS NO STRANGER TO AN AUDIENCE BOTH ON THE SCREEN AND ON STAGE. SINCE THE EARLY AGE OF 10, NIKKI HAS SET HERSELF APART FROM THE REST AS A THESPIAN: SINGING, DANCING, AND ACTING PROFESSIONALLY. SHE HAS BEEN SEEN TNT’S “THE LAST SHIP,” DISNEY CHANNEL’S “K. C. UNDERCOVER,” AND THE DARK COMEDY DRIVING WHILE BLACK WHICH WAS RELEASED EARLIER THIS YEAR ON FEBRUARY 1ST.

Tell us about CBS’s Scorpion, your role and how it is working with a giant network. How exciting has it been for you? Scorpion is about a team of geniuses who “tackle worldwide threats only they can solve”. My character, Patty Logan, is an intern to Sylvester, the math genius. Aside from Scorpion, he doubles as a city councilman, so I’m his secretary, campaign manager, and “boss”. I’m not really his boss but Patty is just very forward and direct so it often seems like she’s his boss. It’s all been extremely exciting. The first time I walked onto the set I remember being completely speechless and taken aback by it, because it’s a really cool set! They transformed an entire soundstage into the garage, which is like their headquarters. And I guess I must have given them the impression that I was really calm and composed because they kept telling me how professional I was. I would thank them, but in reality I was freaking out. How did you get into acting? When did you feel the urge to perform in front of audiences? When I was 9 I felt the urge to perform at my school talent show when my parents “forced” me to do it. I say forced, but I actually did want to do it. I was just too scared to do it on my own so they just gave me a little nudge and I found out that I loved it. After that I started doing musical theatre. Just local community theatre at first, then regional theatre, then we started flying out for auditions for Broadway in New York, and then LA. What made you want to make the transition from perfoing on stage to in front of the camera? By the time I had started flying out to New York for auditions I was already turning 13 and at the top of the height range going up against kids that were a lot younger and shorter than me. In short, I grew too tall to be a Broadway kid, so I started auditioning in LA. Do you feel more comfortable acting? Singing? Or dancing? And why? I’d say I’m equally comfortable with acting or singing. I’m equally comfortable dancing as well, if I have enough practice. But if I’m put on the spot I’d rather do both acting and singing at the same time (musical theatre style). That way if I’m not feeling too confident with my singing for a particular song, I can focus more on impressing people with how I act it out and vise versa. Or if I choose to sing a song that I’ve performed hundreds of times, that I’m super comfortable with, it’ll be twice as great . What is your dream role? Would it be something that involves all three? A role that I’d definitely want to tackle at some point in my career would have to be Kim in Miss Saigon. It’s just such an amazing show with beautiful music and a beautiful love story. And not to mention Kim is such a strong character. At 17 she loses her family, has to become a prostitute, falls in love with an American soldier, then has to raise their son by herself. She’s pretty badass. And not only does the role require you to be able to sing, dance, and act, at one point in the show she sings this huge vocally and emotionally demanding song while sitting down carrying a child on her lap. I was actually training to audition for it on Broadway for most of last year. I was going to move to New York after I graduated, but then Scorpion called.

As an actress, who inspires you? I’m Filipino, so growing up my parents would always be talking about Lea Salonga and playing Miss Saigon (she originated Kim) and the 10th anniversary concert of Les Miserables (she played Eponine). When I was little I didn’t really understand the significance of a Filipino actress being able to accomplish everything she’s accomplished, but I get it now. She was able to break through. That’s pretty amazing and I look up to her. Was there a teacher or person or an event occured while you were in school that made you want to pursue acting? After I sang at my school talent show, our choir director invited me into his show choir group where we sang and danced to show tunes. I loved it, so I started doing community theatre. Then my 5th and 6th grade teachers suggested I auditioned for How the Grinch Stole Christmas at The Old Globe, which ended up being my first professional show. There are honestly so many people who have helped me in one way or another at different points in my career, but I think one constant force is my parents. They’re my number one fans. We live in San Diego and my Dad has been driving me up to LA for every single audition and callback for the past 5 years. Sometimes we’d be driving up 4 or 5 days a week. And before LA we flew to and from New York for Broadway 4 times. It’s tiring. And not to mention expensive, and that doesn’t even include all the classes and coaches. It takes a lot of sacrifice. Do you have a favorite tv show at the moment (Can’t be CBS’s Scorpion haha)? What character would you want to play in that show? My favorite TV show is constantly changing, but I think one show that I’ve always enjoyed is Doctor Who. When I first heard about the show from a friend, I actually ended up binge watching the first 5 seasons in a week. Anything is possible on that show and it’s honestly so weird sometimes, but that’s why I love it. I think the dream would be to play one of the Doctor’s companions, because that would mean being his sidekick while he/she (she’s a woman this season) travels through time and space. But really I’d be fine with any character as long as I get to go in the TARDIS. What are some of your aspirations in life? I think the ultimate goal is to be happy. That is, with myself, with who I am, and with what I’m doing everyday (including what I plan on doing for the rest of my life). Otherwise what’s the point? I mean, I don’t think that being happy is the same as being satisfied or settling. I’ll still continue to strive to be more and do more. But I just think that doing so would be a lot less difficult if I was happy with everything I’ve done and everything I know I can do… if that makes any sense… Also being a household name would be pretty cool too.. You got to wear some really awesome clothes in shooting with Bello. What would you say your sense of style is? Nonexistent. I’m only half kidding. I have no sense of style. The stylists dressed me up better than I’d ever be able to dress myself. It’s always fun to get to wear an outfit that looks very well put together and actually cute. I’d like to think that my style is a reflection of who I am as a person which is usually cute and quirky and sometimes a little edgy, but I’m also pretty weird and random and so are my outfits. They don’t often make much sense. To be honest, most of the time I just ending up wearing whatever is comfortable depending on how much effort I feel like putting into it…

CANDICE PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY ARTHUR GALVAO

In a world that has become so topsy-turvy with real-life villains and chatter of nuclear apocalypse, it's easy to forget that love is the greatest superpower of all. It's no coincidence that during these trying times we tend to rely more on our mythological heroes to give us hope, and to serve as a reminder that the best is always waiting for us on the horizon. One of these modern myths is The Flash (CW) which began its fourth season this past October. BELLO had the chance to catch up with one of its stars, Candice Patton, who plays the Iris West, the wife of The Flash.
