DECEMBER 2018 Diego Tinoco is the definition of what Young Hollywood should be: brilliant work ethic and towering motivation and passion. His hit Netflix series, On My Block, is one of the network's highest-watched and most critically acclaimed in their ever expanding roster of young adult shows. We had the pleasure to photograph him right here in Los Angeles, on one of his only days off from shooting the second season of On My Block, making us appreciate even more Diego’s dedication to his craft and most of all, you, his fans. We can barely believe 2018 is already coming to an end, and what an incredible year it has been for the BELLO family who not only expanded down south with its bilingual issues of BELLO BRASIL, but also added a few new publications you might have heard of such as VULKAN in Canada, TILTED in the UK and QP in the US. We also had the pleasure and opportunity to work with some amazing fashion brands from around the globe and collaborate even further with incredible stylists at MAISON PRIVEE. As for now it is time to celebrate the holidays and daydream about what is coming in 2019. Sometimes reality surpasses expectations so do not be shy to dream big come the New Year. "It's felt so surreal," Diego tells us when describing his 2-year meteoric rise to fame since he moved to Los Angeles from Riverside, California. "When I first got the role on On My Block and had to start going to set, I couldn't sleep--it felt so much like Christmas. You feel nervous, it's your first big job, and it felt like a dream come true." It might seem like overnight success, but Diego was busy working in the acting trenches for quite some time. "I've been acting since I was 16 though, and had to miss a lot of school, but by the time I was 18 I graduated with all my credits and on time, so I knew I had to move to L.A. and get a job and go to more auditions, but I had no idea it would take only seven months." It's not everyday a series as critically acclaimed as On My Block comes along, and Diego knew it when he read the scripts for the first time. "When I first got the script I took it to my acting coach Aaron Speiser, who has taught Will Smith, Gerard Butler, and others, and when he read it he told me he would never lie to me--he said it was a great script and had the potential to blow up really big. I felt the same way but I had no idea it would blow up the way it did. It's been great to see the show get the response it's gotten." And what a response indeed. Diego's performance earned him the Horizon Award for Outstanding Newcomer at the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts gala in Washington, DC. But it's one encounter he had with a fan that was so profound he will cherish the memory for his entire life. "I was at the orthodontist and I had a moment with a kid who came up to me," Diego tells us. "He said, 'I just wanted to say that you are literally the biggest influence in my life. My brothers were in gangs, and I was on the verge of not going to college, and when I watched your show it was a wakeup call. I realized I needed to get out of this whole life and routine, and start having more grand plans for my life.' I never thought I would have had an experience like that in my entire life." So what's the secret sauce of a hit show like On My Block? "I think the audience is really connecting with the show's truthfulness of growing up at that age in those circumstances," Diego says. "It shows every aspect of life: love, loss, tragedy, friendship, adventure, and more. As human beings we all go through these things, and even though we all experience unfortunate moments in our lives we don't have to stay in them forever. There's always a way to get out, especially if you have your three best friends with you." When the show premiered it changed Diego's life overnight. He was gaining upwards of 60,000 followers each day on Instagram, and he told us one story of how much he underestimated the power of such a huge fanbase in those early days. One evening his good friend Blondy Baruti was at Barnes & Noble at the Grove promoting a book

Bello

he had written and Diego wanted to share news of the meet-and-greet with this fans. "It was two or three months after the show came out, and I had no idea the influence it had. So I tweeted about the event, saying, 'Hey everybody, I'll be at the Grove so come on out for a good time and let's hang out. I thought maybe 10 or 20 people would show up, but we ended up getting a whole storm of people--maybe 300 or 400 girls showed up. And you couldn't get into the meet-and-greet without buying the book, so all those girls bought the book!" It's that kind of passion that sent the show's fans into a frenzy when On My Block made the final list of nominees for this year's Best Breakout Show at the Teen Choice Awards. Needless to say, the show won and when Diego and his co-stars hit the stage to accept the award it was another surreal moment for the rising star. "It was so insane. I never would have thought I'd be in that position. You're standing in front of Zac Efron, Chris Pratt, the Riverdale kids, and the Stranger Things kids." He adds, "You just hope you don't do anything crazy on stage, or pass out mid-sentence. It felt really great though, especially because it means our fans connect with the show so much." But Diego's Hollywood dream does not end with On My Block. His greatest ambition is to model his career after the actor he looks up to the most. "I really admire Leonardo DiCaprio because of the roles and projects he's chosen, and the way he presents himself. He studies his lines like crazy, he's word-for-word for the dialogue, and if he's not running a scene onscreen, he's running it off-screen because he practices so intensely and is always in a state of getting better at what he does. Plus he's an environmentalist and cares about the planet. I really admire him." In his newfound position as a TV star, naturally Diego is meeting countless movers and shakers, and he treasures those encounters. "I want to make the best of all my relationships in the business. I'm always nice to everybody, but for instance, you never know who you might meet who will be a director some day. And if I'm having a bad day I will never take it out on somebody. I try to treat everybody like my brother, my best friend, or my mom and dad. My ultimate dream is to book a superhero role, and also to say happy, healthy and strong." With Christmas and New Year's right around the corner we wanted to ask him what his plans were. "This whole month I'm going to be back in Corona with my family, my dogs, my friends, watch a lot of Christmas movies, workout, get my ideas straight and my mind straight. I'd also like to write a play, and when I'm in between projects I'd like to put it on stage with my friends and co-stars. I'd also love to make some music with my brother.

ABC’s Speechless season premiered this fall, how has your character evolved since season 1? Did you see your character evolving this way? Where do you see your character going? Ray has always been an anxious over-thinker and I don’t see that changing. It’s just part of his genetic makeup and place as the middle child in a family with a sibling who is disabled. It would be unrealistic, and nowhere near as funny, to see Ray overcome his tendencies to make everything worse while trying to make things better! I will say that Ray has come a long way in gaining self-esteem in social situations, but that has only made his never-ending quest to find love that much more disastrous!

43

How is working with the crew on Speechless? Can you tell any behind the scenes stories? There is never a dull moment on the set of Speechless. I am lucky to work with a group that is super professional but knows how to have fun while working insanely hard. We work long hours, but it doesn’t feel like it. We are a very sarcastic, prank-inspired group. Last year one of our camera operators created an alter-ego for me named “Madison Cook” when he told our new sound mixer that my name was Madison and not Mason. Everyone called me Madison for weeks, the props department changed my cast chair to that name, they changed my parking sign to that name and also created an Instagram account for RealMadisonCook full of terrible outtake pics of me! It was hilarious!

We saw that you posted on your Instagram about #WorldAIDSDay. You’re an ambassador for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, how did you get involved with this foundation? What is your goal as an ambassador? For me, it is very important to use my visibility and position as a way to help others. I am a Celebrity Ambassador for two organizations that I am very passionate about – one of which is EGPAF. I first became familiar with the foundation when they invited me to be a celebrity guest at their big annual fundraiser event, A Time for Heroes, after I filmed Spy Kids. There I learned all about the organization and how it started with 3 mothers around a kitchen table in 1998 and has grown to become the leading global non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating pediatric AIDS and HIV. AIDS was at its most critical point during my dad’s childhood and now, with so many medications and treatments it has become a very livable disease. But, because of this, many people have forgotten about it and don’t realize it still a very real problem – especially in adolescents and children. EGPAF’s mission is to provide services to help strengthen health systems, help fund research to advance, prevent, treat and end AIDS and also to advocate for global, regional, national and local policies to help in their efforts. In my lifetime alone, the hard work of EGPAF has helped reduce new pediatric HIV infections by 70%! My goal as ambassador is to help in any way I can – raise awareness, raise money, anything to help end AIDS. How would you describe your everyday look? Let’s just say Mason’s look is the polar opposite of my character Ray’s look. I am very fashion forward in my style and love to try new looks. Right now, I am all about Off-White by designer Virgil Abloh. His collaborations with everyone from Nike to Converse and his designs for Louis Vuitton are insane and I want it all! I’m not gonna lie here – I do have expensive taste. You are likely to see me cruising around town in my Off-White Jordan’s with clothes by The Kooples or Diesel and my Gucci backpack. Some call it douchey – I call it “fashun” LOL. Last year the show won a TCA award in Outstanding Achievement in Youth Programming, what does this mean to you?

45

Speechless has received lots of recognition – a Television Academy Honors award, a People’s Choice Award nomination, a Television Critics Association award, and many from organizations celebrating accurate portrayals of people with disabilities in the media, like the Media Access Award and The ARC’s Catalyst Award. Anyone in this business knows how hard it is to get a show from script to pilot to series to renewal. It is hard! Factor in a story about a family with a disabled family member and that difficulty level dramatically increases. As an actor, I strive to be a part of quality projects, but when that includes being part of a movement to accurately represent a huge percentage of our population that often goes unrecognized it is like winning the lottery. The awards are great, but even better are the faces of the people who come up to me in the airport, at the mall or even Walmart in Salem, Oregon to say how much it means to them to see a family like theirs on TV! You have been acting from a very young age and are a Daytime Emmy award nominee. How has it been growing up in front of a camera. Describe a dream role you would like to play. I started acting when I was 8, so I have spent the last 10 years in front of the camera. Honestly for me, it hasn’t seemed anything but normal. I love acting so much it seems weirder to think about my life before I was acting back in Oklahoma. When I was 6 or 7, I had a Pirates of Caribbean themed birthday with Johnny Depp as Captain Sparrow on my cake! Little did I know I would be working with him a few years later in The Lone Ranger. It still blows my mind that I have worked alongside so many major actors like Johnny, Armie Hammer, Steve Carell, and so many more. Minnie Driver, who plays my mom on Speechless, is an Oscar nominee! You would think that it would be intimidating working next to them after growing up watching their movies, but it really hasn’t been. We all share the same passion for acting and treat each other as equals. As far as a dream role, that is tough! There are SO many roles I want to play and, now that I am 18, my world has opened up. Comedy is a real focus of mine, but I also love a good dramatic role. I love epic war films, so that is definitely something I hope to do.

December 2018

Bello

Where do you find your biggest inspiration? Wow so many places! I do like risk-takers, which is probably why I like Johnny Depp so much. I can say the same for Steve Carell. Steve has the kind of career I hope to have – he is a comedic genius and has found so much success in that, but he takes chances on dramatic roles like in Foxcatcher which got him an Oscar nomination. I want to push myself and grow from every role like he has. Can you tell us something about you that we didn’t know? I give this answer in all my interviews when asked this question, so you might actually already know it, but it is my favorite thing to share. I am the great-great-great-great grandson of John A. Roebling, who was the engineer and architect of the Brooklyn Bridge and the inventor of the cable used on suspension bridges all over the world, including the Golden Gate in San Francisco. I would love to be in a film about John A. Roebling and the Brooklyn Bridge because that was an epic accomplishment back in 1883 and it is so much a part of my family heritage and history.

How has it been transitioning to American culture? Any differences, anything you believe Americans are completely missing in terms of food, activity, pop cultural obsession we don’t have here?

Jacket LTH JKT

It’s been a gradual transition over the past few years. On my first few trips to America I would get pretty homesick after about 2 weeks. I still kinda miss the snacks like Tim Tams or Jatz (which are like crackers), luckily cookies at Costco make up for that. I also miss how easy it is to get from place to place on public transport. The train & bus system is really good in Sydney. That’s probably the one thing LA lacks. However, after spending a lot of time here it feels like a second home and the thought of moving here permanently has definitely grown on me. If you could collaborate with any musician, who would it be and why? What would your music video look like? I’d love to collaborate with Kaytranada, his music is just so groovy and old school. The music video would probably be some kind of artsy visual, lots of dark and cool lighting, maybe even with a vintage grain. Your IG states you’ll be releasing an EP this week! What do your fans want to take from the EP? I’m really excited to share a different side of myself as an artist. This EP sheds some light on how the songs sound in the initial stages of writing them - just very raw and simple. Ever since I started recording professionally, I’ve wanted to put out something acoustic and intimate like this. Can you describe to BELLO readers your style? My style musically is a mix of pop, indie and RnB. It has a bit of an old school vibe too. My style in fashion is a little bit nineties - inspired. I love mom jeans, cropped tees, plaid pants and white sneakers. My favorite brands are probably Urban Outfitters, Pacsun and Brandy Melville.
