Letter from the Editor
Seasons are a constant reminder of change. And because we know what season is coming next, we have that sense of certitude and security in this cycle of life. These past few days have been a difficult reminder of the illusion we cling to. The past two strong earthquakes here in California have made us a little nervous. Are we prepared? The answer is often a very shy yes. We kind of prepare for the inevitable in life hoping it will not happen. Some people are trying to "live" in a blissful denial. But is it healthy for our soul? Most likely not. While I was fearing a third and more powerful earthquake, I also learned of the passing of 20 year old actor Cameron Boyce. It shook me way more than the strongest earthquake ever could. I had the pleasure of collaborating with this charismatic young man when we launched TILTED magazine. I thought he was so perfect for the concept I had in mind. Mark Twain said that “a man who lives fully is prepared to die at any times” and Cameron sure was the definition of that quote. He lived his life like a universe in expansion; that is the only way I could describe the energy I felt in his presence. You could feel it even if you just spent a couple of hours with him. So I asked myself, “does that force die when we die?” It seems unlikely that this energy we are expressing here is just a burst of nothing to nothing. But rather, our impact remains even after we are gone. One thing we are all facing in this life are obstacles. So, while it feels and seems easier at times to complain, to find excuses, to blame others, and even hurt others with our actions and decisions: by doing so, we are actually suffocating ourselves and our energy. We feel anxious because we still believe we have the ability to control the world around us. That third shake I was dreading did not come but surely shifted (or realigned) something in me. I realized you can affect someone’s life with just a meeting and without even being aware of it. Only our ego likes to keep records of things (good or bad) so we need to let that go in order to live the life we are supposed to. That chance may not come around so easily again so why jeopardize something greater than “ourselves" for short term illusions? That is the reminder (along with stocking up on non perishable food and water) this summer has brought me so far. With all my love. Stéphane Marquet Creative Director

Summer 2019 is the Summer of Max Ehrich. He’s dominating summer airwaves with his roles in two new hits. He stars as Tate Watkins in a new Netflix film called Walk. Ride. Rode. about real-life barrel racing star Amberly Snyder who continued to press on after becoming paralyzed; in addition to Walk. Ride. Rodeo., Ehrich stars in a new Lifetime series titled American Princess. The two very contrasting projects allowed Ehrich to flex his breadth as both a comedic and dramatic actor. “I think they’re just completely different genres, so just the respect you want to pay to the person or the event that the story is based on definitely had a huge impact on how I play the character.” Since Walk. Ride. Rodeo was based on a true story, Ehrich’s preparation for the role differed a bit from fictional roles projects. “I did a lot of research beforehand; I wanted to be as informed as possible as to the actual story. Even though my character is fictional, I wanted to know everything I know about the real life Amberly so I could go into there having full knowledge of the project I was entering into.” Despite the two projects contrasting heavily, Ehrich still achieved something he does with every character he plays: learning about himself through his characters. “For each character, I always bring part of myself to relate to the characters and so I can do it in the most truthful and authentic way. I’d say characters also inform me about aspects about myself that I hadn’t necessarily seen on my own. It’s a two way street.” Though acting is one way for Ehrich to interact with his inner self, music has served as another important outlet for the star. Ehrich has a deep passion for music, something that is evident with his song in Walk. Ride. Rodeo., which he wrote with Amberly Snyder. “For many years I’ve been playing characters in different projects, and music is a way to express myself without playing a role. It feels like I’m taking off the mask and sharing my life experience, my heart, so it’s a pretty vulnerable experience. Been writing songs for years and stuff, but it’s been this passion I kept to myself. After the song were placed in the film, I felt inspired to share more after seeing the reaction that I was affecting people. When you affect people on a personal and emotional level, it inspires you to continue.”

Just as Ehrich shines through on the screen, his musical talent is evident as well. He has an impressive musical vocabulary that influences his music, including the Beatles, 90s grunge, Daniel Caesar, and John Mayer. “I really grew up on John Mayer, who is a huge influence for me. My music taste has allowed myself to dive deep, especially as a guy in society, we’re told to put on a tough face and just move on. John Mayer was an inspiration moving on because he’s really vulnerable. He’s a huge inspiration.” Ehrich’s respect for vulnerability and introspection not only comes from his interest in holistic healing, yoga, and meditation. “I’m a big fitness guy as well. I love going to the beach, I love anything that’s nature oriented. I’m into holistic herbs and healing. I’m always fascinated by different ways we can heal our bodies through natural ways, that’s really intriguing to me.” These interests and practices influence Ehrich’s worldview, as he advocates for appreciating the present. When asked what he would advise his younger self to do, he responded, “To not take myself so seriously. I think that we’re in a culture where we’re really defined by the things that we do and our time here is a bit limited, so I think it’s okay to enjoy the process. It's okay to strive for a bit more but I think It’s important to enjoy what is.” As he continues to enjoy his current successful summer, Ehrich does have plans to continue to grow as an artist and share his passions with the world. “I just want to continue to dive into projects, like acting roles that challenge me and continue to bring me out of my comfort zone, I feel like that’s the only way we can grow. I want to put out my music and have an impact on society in a positive way and a way that get people thinking and feeling more deeply.” Be sure to catch Ehrich in Walk. Ride. Rodeo. on Netflix, American Princess on Lifetime in addition to listening to his latest musical releases “Ride” and “Somebody Else,” available on all music streaming services.

exclusive conversation with
Sarah Jeffery
The charming and talented actress Sarah Jeffery has been making moves recently with her role on the drama series CHARMED and her role on DESCENDANTS 3, coming out August 2nd. Having also starred on three seasons as Jennifer Lopez's daughter on the drama series SHADES OF BLUE among other projects, Jeffery has been making moves in the industry. Beautiful and talented, Sarah Jeffery is on the rise and continues to do so as she balances her two worlds. Tell me more about your experience being one of the lead roles on the drama series CHARMED. I feel very grateful and lucky to have stepped into the role of Maggie on Charmed. The show itself has such a strong message, it’s very in line with my political views and is all for women supporting women, which I think we could definitely use right now. Additionally, Charmed is such an iconic show and was so ahead of it’s time, I was so excited to be a part of a new iteration of it. Maggie is also just such a fun character to play, very multifaceted. She’s smart, caring, and empathetic, but she's also a girly girl who's into fashion and I think its important to remind young women that they can be both these things and they don't have to fall into one category.
9 pages a day. There are definitely pros and cons to both. If you could have any powers, what would they be? I would love to be able to teleport, I have such a busy schedule and not a lot of down time, so if I could teleport I’d save a lot of time on travel and actually be able to take vacations on the weekends! How would you describe your fashion style? Honestly, it varies so much depending on my mood. Some days I'm a lot sportier, some days I'm girly and preppy, and other days I’m in chill street style clothes. Fashion is a big part of self expression to me so I’m always exploring new looks. What would you say is your biggest goal in life?
How does it feel knowing that the second season of CHARMED has already been renewed? It feels great. We worked really hard on the first season, long hours, intense fight scenes, lots of magical elements of course… I’m stoked to get to do it all again. What do you look forward to the most in the second season? I look forward to developing the magical side of things. Potential new powers, more fighting and combat… I honestly have no idea what they're cooking up in that writers room but I can only hope it includes some of that! The Disney Channel Original Film DESCENDANTS 3 is set to come out in August. Which role do you play in it? I play Audrey, Sleeping Beauty’s daughter. She was raised as a princess and has an attitude to match. You get to see a new side of her in Descendants 3, and I'm so stoked for people to see what we created for this third film in the franchise. What are some key differences you have had to adapt to between filming a TV series and filming a movie?
I guess I would say to continue working on great projects, and sign on to projects that I am excited about and can really get behind. That and just to be happy and healthy. Could you share with me a favorite memory on set (any set) ? One of my favorite on set memories was shooting the finale song/dance on Descendants 3. It’s allegedly the last film in the franchise (who ever really knows) and I’ve known these people for over 5 years now, and getting to perform with that family and celebrate what we've created over the past half a decade was really special. Picture yourself 10 years from now: what do you see? I see someone who has crossed off a lot of her goals but is still working very hard to cross off more. I definitely am a hard worker and will continue to be, and I hope that 10 years from now I am happy with not only my professional life but my personal life as well.
I guess the main difference would be pace. With feature films you really get to take your time and specifically with Descendants, we had a lot of rehearsal time to nail our big song and dance numbers. You shoot a LOT less pages in a day with films. With TV the pace is insanely quick, sometimes you don't get as much time as you want, and sometimes we shoot up to

Madame X by Sam Spotswood
One of the biggest influences in pop music history has released her 14th studio album, Madame X. This album, perhaps Madonna’s best work, reflects her artistic expertise while also including brand new influences based on her experience living in Portugal that will satisfy fans old and new alike. Because the album showcases Madonna’s mysterious, cosmopolitan alter ego, the namesake of the album, the work as a whole experiments with new sounds and provocative topics, continuing Madonna’s legacy of pushing the envelope through her music. The opening track “Medellin” featuring Maluma sets the precedent for the album, establishing steamy lyrics alongside worldly themes and sonic patterns, reflecting the experimental nature of the album. Even so, this song eases the audience into the mold breaking to come. While the next track, “Dark Ballet” at first doesn't seem like a natural progression from “Medellin,” its attempt to break traditional song structures makes it the perfect fit. The mechanized sounding waltz that sits in the center of the song is reminiscent of similar innovative efforts by Queen with classic songs like “Millionaire Waltz” from 1976’s A Day at the Races. The third track, “God Control,” follows a similar trajectory as “Dark Ballet” with its rejection of typical song structures. The harmonizing chorus at minute one especially stands out, contrasting with the more rap-like introduction to the song; the chorus leads into an electronic glam-pop sequence seemingly inspired by the instrumentation and electronic beats of RuPaul’s “Supermodel (You Better Work)” before returning to the harmonizing chorus to close out the song. The influences heard in this track do not translate or flow to the next track, “Future” featuring Quavo, but instead continues the theme of diverse musical patterns. “Future” implements beachy reggae technical elements, including trumpets, steel drums, and reggae-inspired guitar chords. Quavo’s feature initially may seem like an attempt to reach “kids these days,” but proves otherwise, as his verse seamlessly fits into Madonna’s creation. After “Future,” Madame X reaches a turning point, signalling the shift to radical political commentary the rest of the album adopts. The next track continues to break the cohesiveness of the album, drawing upon more house, EDM, and (surprisingly enough) folk music in “Batuka” (of Orquesta Batukadeiras of Lisbon, Portugal). Madonna’s synthesized vocals on this track sonically contrast with the voices of the Orquesta Batukadeiras singing in Portuguese, producing an intentional dichotomy used to demonstrate the adversity felt by women around the world, including the women in the Orquesta.
Bello
International influences and political commentary continue with “Killers Who Are Partying,” as demonstrated with the sultry Spanish guitar and the chorus is sung in Portuguese. This song is the most poignant one on the album, speaking to various political and human rights concerns present in the world today, including the oppression of members of the LGBTQ community, women, exploited children, Muslims, and more. Her radical statement of allyship are syntactically simplistic, yet tackle complex issues through a complex musical production. This interplay most firmly establishes the mission of the album. “Killers Who Are Partying,” while the most outwardly radical on the album, is the most characteristic song of the album--the strong guitar on the track bleeds into “Crave” featuring Swae Lee; the Portuguese chorus translates to the more traditionally Madonna-esque track “Crazy” and the fully Portuguese song “Faz Gostoso” featuring Brazilian artist Anitta; and the Latin influences are heard in her second song featuring Maluma, “Bitch I’m Loca” (which also seems to implement Bollywood influences). The worldliness of the musical composition, while making the album sound interesting, takes a back seat in “Killers Who Are Partying,” as well as the final song of the album “I Rise,” which features snippets from activist Emma Gonzalaz’s 2018 “We Call BS” speech. Incorporating the groundbreaking words of a politically active youth captures the essence of Madame X’s lyrical composition; Madonna’s advocacy for social change in tandem with her worldly instrumentation and production firmly establishes Madonna’s call for a collective movement towards progressivism and equality for the global population. Overall, Madame X is an experience--one that takes the listener for a ride through a dark world in dire need of change with Madonna as our guide. Madonna’s reputation as a trendsetter and mold breaker continues with this album, possibly even more so than her other works. While verses seem to include the popular meters dominating the radio airwaves at the moment, the timbral effects produced by the rich instrumentation influenced by a variety of international genres, computer-manipulated vocals, and radical lyricism reinvigorates the current dry spell pop music is experiencing. Furthermore, the sonic experimentation awakens the listener, allowing Madonna to spread her political activism in the most effective manner possible. With Madame X, Madonna brings her artistry to a younger audience (as well as her older fans) in a way that is receptive to their inclusive postmodern sensibilities, demonstrating yet again to the world that she is the Queen of Pop.

All In the Family: JAGMAC's Pop Power by Sam Spotswood Following in the footsteps of sibling groups like the Jackson 5 and the Jonas Brothers, Baltimore natives Jared, Alyssa, Gabriel, Manjo, Angelique, and CJ Patalinghug (collectively known as JAGMAC) have made an impressive mark on the pop world. From their first single in 2015 to their UK tour with Little Mix to their recent acquisition of the title of Radio Disney’s “Next Big Thing,” Jagmac’s wholesome, dance worthy pop discography has earned them recognition from elite members of the music industry. The group continues to progress and gain more success, as seen with their latest hit “Like a Band.” BELLOmag got to talk to JAGMAC and ask them about their relationship as siblings, their musical influences, songwriting process, and more!
As a group of siblings, how do you think being in a band together has changed your relationship? Our relationship has changed in the best way possible! We have become closer as siblings and as band members. We’re not perfect, and we do have our moments, but we somehow make it work. How do you think being siblings influences your creative process and your group collaboration? Who would you say contributes the most/who is the laziest (lol)? Well, we all grew up listening to the same type of music early on, so we all have a similar taste in music. Also, being siblings helps because we know each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
What was it like touring with Little Mix? Touring with Little Mix was a dream come true! They’re such sweet girls and we had such a blast being on tour with them! Playing in different cities every night with thousands of people was an experience we’ll never forget! What is your favorite part of tour? Favorite part of tour would be hearing the fans sing our songs back to us! You’re from Baltimore. What was it like getting to perform in your hometown? Our first headlining show in Baltimore was totally epic! So many people came out, not only our friends/family, but other people we had never seen before!
Jared: What’s it like being the youngest? Does the order from oldest to youngest impact how the band works? Being the youngest has its perks and downfalls for sure, but I love being the youngest because I get all the attention! LOL. Each family dynamic is different, but we make sure to respect each other as siblings and artists, no matter the age. What is your songwriting process like? Our songwriting process varies depending on which producer we’re working with, but it usually consists of us sitting around the piano, coming up with different melodies. Then from there, different words will flow and then a concept will eventually develop. What is your favorite JAGMAC song and why? CJ - “No Plans” is my favorite song because it’s the most fun to perform! Alyssa - “Like Me” would be my favorite because the lyrics are so relatable and it’s also a very fun song to perform. Manjo - “No Plans” is my favorite because there’s a lot of B-More club influence in the production. Gabriel - “Right Back With You” is my favorite song because it’s one that will never get too old to perform! Angelique - “Be Honest” would have to be my favorite because the lyrics are everything that we stand for and it’s like our anthem song! Jared - “Like Ooh” is my favorite because it’s super fun song to dance to! How do each of you add your individuality to each song/performance? We all add our individuality just by being ourselves when we
35
perform! It’s so important to have our moment to express ourselves creatively so that the audience can see the flavor that each member has!
As Filipino artists, what do you think about the importance of Asian-American representation in Hollywood and the music industry? It’s so important because everyone should be proud of where they come from! To be able to connect with your roots is such an amazing thing that shouldn’t ever be hidden or ashamed of. We also look up to some Filipino artists like Bruno Mars, the Black Eyed Peas and even artists like Prince and H.E.R. who are also half Filipino like us! What are some of your hobbies outside of music? Aside from music, we like sports, teaching Martial Arts and hanging out with friends and family. Manjo, I heard you’re the cook in the group. What are some of your favorite things to cook? “My favorite thing to cook at the moment is Butter Chicken.” Who is one artist each of you would like to collaborate with? Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Bruno Mars, Thomas Rhett, Beyonce, and Shawn Mendes. Who are some of your musical influences? The Jackson 5, Black Eyed Peas, Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, Spice Girls

Charles Lott Jr. had not made any specific plans for his future but it seems that the universe already had. After only a couple of auditions, Charles landed his comic relief role as Ron "Chubbs" Hendricks in an upcoming film featuring Ben Affleck. Ironically, the film is about basketball and Charles had never been a good ball player. That did not stop him and his will and determination to do right by the movie is strongly felt. Charles Lott is just beginning his career in the film industry and his strong and beautiful spirit is bound to continue bringing him to higher places and fast. Keep a look out!

We know you are performing in an upcoming film with an interesting cast: tell me more about your role in it and what the film is about. My character name is Ron “Chubbs” Hendricks! I am the Comic Relief in such a Heartsore film. It’s about a comeback story, a man who was a promising basketball star who had a Transient career due to alcoholism; he loses so much and ends up regrouping and gaining it back through the youth of a basketball team. He ends up growing to love them after an Augean grueling path. The story line revolves around basketball. Was that a sport you used to play ? If not, what are some obstacles you encountered in preparing for the film? I did not play basketball growing up. I sucked. You’d think that I would’ve gotten better after months of hard vigorous training! It’s honestly sad when I had to workout in front of the athletic coordinator for the movie I went to the 99 cent store and bought an ugly cast and taped it around my hand so if I sucked (which I did) I would have an excuse and it worked!! It was just hard going to practice seeing everyone better than me but I worked hard in trying to look like I knew what I was doing
I use to hear that “patience is a virtue” and it sound like this stupid cliche saying that keeps people’s hopes alive but it’s actually true especially with the cinema industry. It’s hard to become a movie star but if you have a dream and really believe in it and have patience it will come: every no is one step closer to a yes! Even I used to get down after I didn’t book roles that I really wanted but now I just brush it off and move on. Some of the roles I auditioned for wasn’t even close as big as the movie I did now, I did a few tv show auditions and I thought that it was the end of the world and BOOM a movie came up. Another thing I learned is always stay prepared and don’t be afraid to take risks it’s always better to be prepared and not have the opportunity then to have the opportunity and not be prepared I always have the five P’s proper preparation prevents poor performance. Never be afraid to take risks!! If you take them and it doesn’t work out so be it! You only miss the shots you don’t take you never know what might happen ALWAYS TAKE THE RISK!! Especially if it’s something you believe in. If you could pick any role to play in the future, what would it be? What kind of movie would you like to be in?
I heard you met with some great cast members. As you are at the start of your career, how was it playing in a film alongside Ben Affleck? He is the most amazing, nicest, most genuine person I have ever met, and I’m not just saying that I actually mean it I love that man to death. He “adopted” me. I’m his son now: ask him he’ll tell you he has given me so much game to this business and I feel so special to even be in his inner circle and hang out with him, we’re really close. I was talking to him yesterday and I’m still in ahhhh. I hope to work with him again he’s really like a father figure.
I just want to show my versatility in roles and wanting to show how ambidextrous I am. I feel confident enough that I can play multiple genres and characters! But if I had to narrow it down, at the moment I want to do something like Kingsman Secret Service it seems like something cool to show and it looked a lot of fun to be a secret agent would also wolf of Wall Street, 21 jump street, that Godzilla movie that came out, comedies, but I also loved the role in I am legend I can go on good fellas, Phillip Seymour Hoffman in the master, raging bull, Lawrence of Arabia, rain man, there will be blood,Django Moonlight, When they See us, the list can go on!!
Was there a specific person or event that inspired you to become an actor?
Growing up, had you ever imagined you would become an actor? If not, what did you dream of becoming?
Growing up I loved Will smith and Leonardo DiCaprio--I idolized them. I watched them religiously as they were my favorite actors. I loved Denzel as well; those men have such have such a command onscreen that forces you to keep your eyes on them. Obviously, there are tons of people I can name but those are my favorites growing up!
It sucks to say I didn’t, I played football I always wanted to be a professional athlete if that didn’t work I was going to become a business owner. I wanted to own my own nightclub like my father did. I was so close, we found the building, had the start up money and everything but I booked the movie!! but growing up people always told me I should become an actor. I’ve always had comparisons throughout my career that I will be the next will smith from casting directors and other people I mean who wouldn’t have want have a career like his, his career is a template for a lot of people. so it was definitely something I had in the back of my mind and I always loved movies and cinematography it would’ve happened regardless this was meant to happen I feel. would go to the church choir while they were singing and conduct at 2 years old my mom still has the video ahaha!! I’ve always been a character.
Tell me more about yourself. What are some of your favorite hobbies? Man I am a simple guy I love to listen to music, I loveeeeee watching movies and reading screenplays!! hang out with friends, workout, I am a video game addict and love to party! I just can’t be bored!!!!

DESTINATION
Palm Springs

by StĂŠphane Marquet
A relaxing Oasis just two hours away from Los Angeles, Palm Springs has been my favorite place for a weekend or even a week long escape under the Desert sun. There are some iconic hotels that will immerse you into the resort lifestyle such as The Parker but my ideal setting is a mid century house with a private pool overlooking the majestic mountain and the endless sea of palm trees (that will glitter like diamonds during the golden hour). Get yourself some fresh fruits, sorbet, a good book and your favorite summer drink (mine is a splash of Grenadine On iced Water) and

you'll be set for a hot summer day. Shade, you do need shade! Ideally natural shade from mature trees that will keep you cool. The only real exercise will be going in and out of the pool for the rest of the day. This is the perfect combo for a dreamy vacation. All I usually do is leave the house to eat. Shaded breakfast at Norma's patio at The Parker (1), Lunch at LULU's CafĂŠ, Lobster Rolls is my to go (2). On your drive back home make sure to cruise around Vista La Palmas neighborhood to enjoy some fine Mid Century architecture (3). However, if that is where you rental is then

that would make you the luckiest individual in town. Once the sun dives behind the mountain, it's already time to get ready for dinner under the stars at Birba's (4). The food is just incredible and not overpriced; my suggestion: try their roasted Cauliflower, Melon, Prosciutto, and White Pizza ... I mean everything we had there was delicious. After dark and before going back for a night dive in your pool, take a quick detour to The Parker and order the Smore's that you will enjoy making around their fire pit.

Diversity is one of the greatest forces of love. We are all born open minded and when a child is around all skin tones and cultures, they always grow more accepting. Representation in my line of work is important. Representation in positions of power is important. When people see more than one color, both where they find entertainment and in their lives, their way of thinking and views towards others comes from a different place.
