PYPER AMERICA SMITH by AARON SMITH

SOBELLO

Letter from the Editor I am writing this letter right after seeing Macbeth with amazing performances by Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, so I am under the strong influence of one of the biggest visual masterpieces, cinematographically speaking. I feel that this year’s Oscars are going to be exceptional, as Macbeth is just adding to an impressive slate of amazing movies that we could enjoy this year. This December BELLO Mag Fashion issue cover story with Pyper America was inspired by the nostalgia of the long gone summer, a dreamy feel of the passing autumn. With fashions stories like Chasing the Dragons and Hanna, these are almost melancholic artistic reminders of the fragility of life and the stubborness of always going in a single direction. But there is also always hope and beauty that BELLO consistently stands for. This emptiness is typical for the beginning of December, right before everyone goes into the festive craziness. So we suggest shopping therapy, the best way to make yourself and those around you happy. And to add some creativeness: Be brave and audacious and try something new as often as you can. And if you happen to have APPLE Watch it is time to check out BELLO mag app on it for latest news. Ciao, Alek Editor in Chief Aleksandar Tomovic

FASHION

“Tome well spent” BY: STEVEN CARVER

THE FASHION WORLD HAS BEEN PLAYING A ROUSING GAME OF MUSICAL CHAIRS IN THE PAST YEAR. ONE DESIGNER MOVES FROM ONE HIGHLY-COVETED SPOT TO ANOTHER. QUITE OFTEN, THE NAMES REMAIN THE SAME WHILE THE JOB TITLE CHANGES; ROUND AND ROUND THEY GO. THIS MAKES IT DIFFICULT FOR UP-AND-COMING TALENTS TO MAKE THEIR PRESENCE KNOWN.

An overarching goal of fashion is that of novelty – hence the whiplash-fast pace of discovering and dictating new trends – and that includes its designers. Whether subtle or via a big bang, they need to make a newsworthy impression to succeed in the industry. Fortuitously, the duo from Tome has been doing that exceedingly well. Meeting as fellow fashion undergraduates at Sydney’s University of Technology in 1998, Ryan Lobo and Ramon Martin only launched Tome in 2010 after years of working for others (Martin’s design stints included Alberta Ferretti, Jean Paul Gaultier, Derek Lam, while Lobo held long-term positions as a stylist, design consultant, and buyer for luxury multi-brand retailers). The Australian designers quickly realized that basing the company in New York would be a wise decision, as the North American fashion capital would allow them a larger platform to produce and promote the brand. They were prescient in this belief. From FASHION issue - BELLOmag.com

the start, their collections of elegant, elevated staples have been praised by the industry and worn by appreciative customers. Lucky to catch them between collections, Bello was able to ask Lobo and Martin a few questions on who their customer is, what she wants, and where they see Tome going in the next few seasons.

Who is the Tome woman? We have always stood firm with the belief that she is every woman. What is she looking for? Is it dresses, eveningwear, special fabrications, textiles and finishes…? We never expected women to wear the brand head to “tome” however increasingly they do! Have you found any signatures (i.e. crisp shirting, a belted waist, overthe-knee skirt lengths)?

7

December 2015 - BELLO

We have a strong separates business with signature items such as our white cotton poplin open tie back shirt, black cotton sateen “karate” culottes, cotton lace skirts, and deconstructed trench coats. Why do you find your inspirations tend to be personality-driven (the fall 2015 collection cited Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and fashion designer Donna Karan as influences)? [It’s not just strong personalities, it’s] also their work. Every season we choose female artists as the inspiration for the collection. Does being from Australia give you a fresh perspective, make Tome stand out from the crowd? Yes! You can’t escape where you grew up. The no-nonsense approach to dressing that is quintessentially Australian permeates everything that we do. FASHION issue - BELLOmag.com

8

Who has been your favorite celebrity you’ve seen wearing Tome? Isabella Rossellini. Is there any person you’d want to dress (celebrity, or otherwise)? We are having conversations with Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchet and Julianne Moore. When did you feel like you’ve “made it” in the industry. Was it financial success, recognition amongst peers…? Being one of the top ten finalists in the 2013 CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund. What’s next for Tome? The CFDA + Lexus (Eco) Fashion Initiative; a 17 month program orchestrated to make our business more sustainable.

FROM THE OLSENS TO THE HADIDS, THE JENNERS AND THE HEMSWORTHS, THERE ARE MANY TALENTED FAMILIES CIRCULATING IN HOLLYWOOD. THERE IS, HOWEVER, A NEW FAMILY IN OUR SIGHTS TO GIVE THE CURRENT DYNASTIES FOOD FOR THOUGHT. THE SMITHS HAVE BEEN DOMINATING THE MEDIA CIRCUIT RECENTLY AND, JUDGING BY THEIR INSTAGRAM PAGES, IT’S CLEAR WHY. WITH PYPER AMERICA SMITH’S ICY, BLONDE HAIR AND HER CONTRASTING DARK BROWS, SHE COULD GIVE CARA DELEVINGNE A RUN FOR HER MONEY. OUR ETHEREAL COVER GIRL GOES RETRO FOR BELLO’S FASHION ISSUE THIS DECEMBER AND OPENS UP ABOUT ALIENS, ANNIE LEIBOVITZ AND HER FAMILY BAND, “THE ATOMICS”.

Bello: The modelling, musical and entertainment world can be a tough arena to compete in. Do you find comfort in the fact that all your family are in the business too? Pyper America Smith: Well, it’s the only reason I’m in this industry right now, and I wouldn’t do it without them. Los Angeles, where we live, is a pretty tough place to be. I wouldn’t have lasted without my family I don’t think. B: You did a campaign for Moncler with your brother, Lucky, and the legendary Annie Leibovitz photographed you. What would you say you most like about working alongside your brother? PAS: What I like most about working with Lucky is how much fun we have on set and traveling with him. We’re really close and a lot alike, so it’s the best thing in the world. B: Anni Leibovitz’ 2016 Pirelli Calendar, starring Amy Schumer, Serena Williams etc., has garnered so much attention as it has gone in a completely different direction. What was your reaction to the photos and the people starring in it? PAS: I’ve only seen a couple photos from that, but honestly, I love when people do things out of [their] “comfort zone”, and getting reactions out of people is always fun! Haha! People are always waiting for the next dramatic thing they can react about and almost 35

be a part of. Also, Annie Leibovitz is the coolest. B: The Telegraph did a feature on you over the summer and the growing success of your family! It mentioned that you love alien conspiracy theories. Tell me more about this and where this fascination has come from? PAS: Hahahah! Wait what....? I don’t recall saying that. But, I mean, I think aliens probably exist in this universe. Who’s to say I’m actually not one disguised as a regular human... B: As well as modelling, you are also part of The Atomics with your family. Can you tell me a bit more about the group and how it came about? PAS: It’s true. I play bass in a band with my siblings. I was a musician before I ever thought about modeling. All my siblings and I got instruments for Christmas like 10 years ago. My dad taught us all how to play covers, and we would do little gigs around town when we lived in Utah. Now we’re taking it more serious and will hopefully put out our album this next year! B: Is there anything else that you would like to share with your fans? PAS: Omg, my fans? Sounds so funny to me! I wish I could share a hug with you all and like a large pepperoni pizza! <3 <3 <3 Love you! December 2015 - BELLO
