I am head over heels for this stunning cliffside residential design just a 15-minute drive south of Santa Barbara. Designed by the team at Neumann Mendro Andrulaitis Architects, the house was created for a client whose wish list revolved around a residence that would provide a tranquil place for living, art, and retreat. Well, looks to me like it’s a mission accomplished. See all the amazing photos at www.goo.gl/8BxrAS. (Photo credit: Ciro Coelho
When architect Ian Simpson designed the Manchester skyscraper known as No. 1 Deansgate, he was sure to buy the top two floors for himself (48th and 49th) as a 12,500 sq.ft. shell before construction began on the tower. Now in a stunning feature video for NOWNESS, Simpson gives us a mindblowing tour of his 2-storey home -- which just so happens to include an olive grove of 30 large trees. Excuse me as I pick my jaw up off the floor. You can watch the video tour here: www.goo.gl/pRAI0d. (Photo credit: NOWNESS)
Ever wonder whether or not an all-inclusive vacation is truly a better deal than pay-as-yougo? In a heroic feat of journalism, Jeff Rossen of the TODAY show wanted to find out -- so he and his producer went to a Caribbean resort to investigate. While Jeff took the pay-as-you-go trip, his producer paid for the all-inclusive deal. Watch what happened when they got their bills after 3 days: www.goo.gl/STn9uU. (Photo via Calxibe.com)

Eccles wrote to Jefferson for advice on how to be smarter and more worldly. Jefferson replied with an incredibly thoughtful letter, filled with many words of wisdom and a list of book suggestions. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital:
An Inspiring Mission BY DEE TRILLO SENIOR TRAVEL AND LIFESTYLE EDITOR| @HAUTEFRUGALISTA| DEE@BELLOMAG.COM
For the past 10 years I have been a fierce advocate of St. Jude. It all started with my first child. A beautiful daughter who brought a whole new perspective into my life. When I knew I was to become a mother I wanted to learn as much as I could about health and parenting. I wanted to be prepared for anything that might surface in our lives and have the necessary education to raise my child to be a happy and strong girl. That is when I was faced with stories of children and #121 issue - BELLOmag.com
families that go through cancer from an early age. Obviously I learned what real fear meant. Imagining a newborn or young child go through excruciating tests and intense treatments, and the anxiety and concern of their loved ones for their safety and well-being , was a wake-up call scenario for myself. Given that for the first three years of a kid’s life they rely solely on the care of adults, I knew at that moment that I had to inform myself
as much as I could about early detection symptoms; but, I also realized how important it was to support organizations that were making these children lives better. When I learned about St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital mission to find a cure for all different kinds of cancers and provide a safe haven for families going through the heartbreaking process of having a child with a life danger illness, I made a decision to get 32
I
receive a dozen emails a day about a new non-profit charity or organization. Many of them have a great program to help others or fight a deadly disease. Others lack organizational structure and fail to prove their stance. These are few of the reasons why I am careful with the organizations I choose to support. At BELLO Mag we are all about doing good and creating a positive lifestyle, that is why I am proud to share with you, our audience, the mission behind St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
involved. Beyond the tear-jerking ads on TV and the long line of celebrity supporters, what made me become a donor was their ultimate goal to provide as much help as they could to the families affected. For over 60 years, Danny Thomas’s vision has opened its doors to those who have needed it the most without asking for anything in return. Hard to believe, so I set out to find out more about it, and what I discovered was even more amazing than what I had imagined. 33
The headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee are nothing short of a mini-city. This is not your average hospital facility or your regular shallow non-profit organization. This is a company that works tiredly to deliver the best quality health care, allocate all resources efficiently and towards the patients, offer emotional and financial aid to the families of children receiving treatment, and develop progressive research to effectively battle and cure cancer among other deadly diseases. To say I was
impressed when I visited the hospital is an understatement. Once you walk into the main building you are welcomed with the statue of St Jude Thaddeus. Art by Romero Britto, flags from all the countries from which donations have been received, and play areas with age-appropriate toys and real-life sets are strategically laid out through-out the facility. What fascinated me the most was the art wall created by the children. Everything May 2016 - BELLO
with legal travel documentation going as far as calling embassies to make sure the families are able to enter the United States without a problem, and they give families food credits they can use at the facility from themselves. In addition, they offer dental, vision, and all sorts of tests determine the child’s health and give a more accurate course of action. These are some of the things that make St. Jude truly one of a kind. Throughout the years they have been able to develop many treatments that have favorably change the way children are treated. For example: Osteosarcoma wasn’t been treated until the Geno from poems about their brave personal journeys, acronyms to express their hopes and dreams, and drawings that showcase their goals from when they are grownups. All the walls across the hospital have paintings that recreate everyday situations such as children playing hide and seek, reading a book by the tree, or petting a small dog. Something that makes it truly special is how they integrate every child on the art, regardless of race, creed, or physical appearance. A testament of how St. Jude wants them to see a reflection of themselves in a beautiful way, and be reminded that everyone is welcomed there without judgements and with a heartfelt smile. The complex includes a hospital, a research facility, and 3 living quarters where families of St. Jude patients can stay for up to 3 months. There they can enjoy the benefits of close proximity to their child and be part of the healing process. It is a way to relief the pressure and stress from parents who are already struggling with a difficult diagnostic and uncertainty. I was beyond moved and touched by hearing the stories of survival and strength, and see firsthand how St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has changed their lives. I was witness of how the hold their promise to only depend on donations so no family ever receives a bill. From the moment the families reach out to the organization, they make sure to provide them with the information and means to receive treatment. They cover transportation costs even for children outside of the U.S, they help #121 issue - BELLOmag.com

project initiative, through the comprehensive study of DNA sequence protocol, gave new leads into how approach the disease in order to improve life span, detect predisposition to cancer due to family genetic tendencies, and determine DNA abnormalities than can cause cancer. Because solid tumors are the most difficult to fight, it became a priority to find a way to treat them in a way that wouldn’t damage healthy tissue. That is when they started using Proton Bean therapy to target local tumors. This kind of radiotherapy diminishes long term side effects and provides more control over the targeted area. These are few of the many accomplishes that St. Jude has successfully implemented on their patients. Programs that can continue to be improved with the generous donation of everyone, including you and me, so one day there will be a cure for cancer and other diseases. I have to say that visiting the hospital and hearing the children and families share their struggles was truly a life changing experience. I left inspired and motivated to continue supporting this wonderful organization and their mission so no family has to endure the challenging journey alone. The 2016 Summer Playlist
N
BY HIKO MITSUZUKA @THEFIRSTECHO
ow that it has finally warmed up outside (break out the swimwear!) you’ll want some fresh tunes to liven up the pool parties, barbecues, and beach trips you’ve got scheduled on your calendar for the next three months. Start your downloading engines NOW.
1. “Into You” by Ariana Grande - A glorious return to form for Ari, this irresistible pop banger desperately wants to be your Summer Jam of 2016. It reeks of danger, scandal, and unadulterated bliss. You’ll be singing “A little less conversation, and a little more touch-my-body” all season long. 2. “Champagne Problems” by Nick Jonas - True, “Chainsaw” may be his latest, but this funk-filled track that leaked earlier this year deserves to be revisited, especially while you’re popping bottles - preferably on a yacht somewhere.
3. “Can’t Stop The Feeling” by Justin Timberlake - By the time you read this, JT’s happy-go-lucky dance anthem will officially dethrone 2013’s King of the Summer Song, Pharrell Williams, and become the “Happy” of 2016.
4. “Drive It Like You Stole It” by Hudson Thames - If you caught John Carney’s uplifting Sing Street in theaters this spring, you probably fell in love with this inspiring track that takes the bassline from Hall & Oates’s “Maneater” and turns it into a life-affirming call-to-action that punctuates the film’s joyous third act. #121 issue - BELLOmag.com
36
5. “Baby Baby” by Amy Grant feat. Tori Kelly - To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Grant’s megahit from 1991, Tori Kelly steps in to give this irresistible gem a 2016 update.
6. “Boyfriend” by Tegan and Sara - The dynamic duo is back and better than ever with this sparkling pop number.
7. “Go!” by M83 feat. Mai Lan - Never underestimate the power of the saxophone. The electronic group’s magical track wooed audiences at Coachella, and now it’s time for this companion piece to “Midnight City” to take over the season with its lounge-in-the-afternoon groove.
8. “Somebody Else” by The 1975 - Summer wouldn’t be complete without a track designed for late-night drives through the neighborhood, and this hypnotic tune is just that.
9. “Woman Up” by Meghan Trainor - An empowerment anthem that’s begging to be played at the start of every Girls Night Out this summer.
10. “Write On Me” by Fifth Harmony - This easy-breezy track from the girl group is as perfectly sweet and smooth as a tall glass of lemonade at a 4th of July barbecue. 11. “The Right Song (Dillon Francis Remix)” by Tiesto - Get sweaty with this banging, calorie-burning EDM redux.

Seated next to a waiting salad…she shared these things about her life, relationship to Chris Wood, her family, and her “love-hate” relationship with acting.
Was acting always your first love? I went to a performing arts Highschool in Sydney but I wasn’t like “Yeah I want to be an actor”. I guess I didn’t really think about it until I was 14. Everyone always told me I was such a performer and that “you’re gonna be an actor-you’re gonna be an actor” but I was also doing gymnastics at the time and I was like “What? No! I’m gonna be a gymnast, an Olympic gymnast!”
you to be couple goals. So I know they want to know...when did you first fall for Chris and why? (Laughing shyly) Well, I don’t know about people considering us couple goals. We just became really good friends--obviously we met on containment. And we were just goofballs together. It’s nice to always spend time with your best friend.
Pausing for a laugh she then says…
Now the real question: Why would you say he fell for you?
...But I guess obviously that’s probably harder. So I never did that. I never became an Olympian. So now I’m an actor.
The Australian accent.Just the accent. That’s it. That’s what got him. Everything else about me he was just like “Oh Dear”.
So How did it happen? Was it accidental?
You have a fairly new puppy and I’m jealous but I also think you posted that he “did shit on your carpet for mother’s day”.
Well, I told my mom I wanted to get an agent and try being an actor but she said it’s too hard and didn’t really want me to do it. But my parents are seperated, so then I went to my dad’s house and said “Dad, I want to get an agent”. We both laugh hysterically Wow, you literally did the “Mom says no, so now ask dad” move Literally, I played them, used that to my advantage and he said cool so I looked in the yellow pages found an obscure listing called “kidz in the biz” or something like that and I went to audition and things just sort of happened from there. Safe to say they’re both cool with the whole acting thing now? Yeah. They like it now haha! So first I admit, I stalked your instagram Perfect, I’m that person too--I stalk too. Well, I saw your relationship with Chris, and a lot of people consider #121 issue - BELLOmag.com
Oh Yeah. He just shit on my rug. This huge shit. He hadn’t had an accident in a while. So he came to me with a strange look on his face...on Mother’s Day...like a “look what I did” face. And I was just like oh gosh, happy mother’s day to me. Do people yell out your character name from projects in public when they see you? Umm Sometimes. Like in public people would yell “Seppia” from Spartacus. Not for containment yet. Ever respond back in character?
What’s really interesting is that when it happened it was initially so traumatizing because we had never heard of a baby been born three months early and my initial response was oh no he’s not going to be fully formed. But Patrick has so much life and he was in the hospital for ages but it’s amazing to see how he’s grown. What’s also is interesting is hearing you say your brother was also premature because by my putting it out there so many people reached out and told me about how this happened to their family as well and this is a common thing.I feel like had my sister and I known that is so common that it would have been a lot less daunting for us. Yes some babies are born at 28 weeks but with modern science we help them get through it. And you were able to spend almost everyday with them early on thanks to shoot location right? Yes. It was amazing. Because a week after Patrick’s birth my shoot location moved to Perth and the shoot gave me a two bedroom place there. So she was able to stay with me and be a bit more relaxed. She was in with Patrick everyday but I think just being able to have the downtime at the apartment and her own kitchen really helped. So that was nice. So the shoot location was really...I can’t think of the word… Serendipitous? Exactly
No but wow--I totally should! What a great idea! It would be less awkward-spring it back on them.
Have you had anyone reach out to you about being inspired by you? Do you feel some sort of responsibility there?
I saw your nephew arrived in challenging circumstances (my brother was also born premature) and you posted the sweetest message about that time period. Only if I’m not intruding. What was that like?
Yes some really lovely people have reached out. Telling me it’s wonderful to see a young girl acting and following her dreams and that it inspires them. So I think anyone in the media does have some sort of responsibilities to be aware of. 40
You have gotten to a place where so many aspire to be. What would your advice be to those who are about to quit? I think it would be pretty standard. That you just have to keep going. Like anyone, I have moments where I’m like “Will this actually work--will I pull this off--what happens in ten years if there’s nothing for me to do.” But I think that just knowing life’s a journey and you’ll end up where you need to be by exploring possibilities and riding the waves is what makes it easier. Like on instagram there is this idealized view into someone’s world. Everyday I get turned down and rejected from auditions. I get frequently put down and have to pick myself back up (laughs) but I don’t post those moments about my really SHIT audition. But we all have ebbs and flows. The hardest thing about being an actress? Not knowing. You never know where the next job is coming from so that’s a challenge in and of itself. And we like to be in control of our lives so that’s tough. I have this mentor, an Australian actress, Kerry Armstrong. She told me try to keep one thing in your life as a constant everyday. I’d like to say that I got up every day and did yoga but I don’t. And the environment is always changing. I could be in a trailer, an apartment, a different country. So without fail, everyday I make my bed. And it sounds so little but it keeps me sane. (laughing) I know I’m going to sleep and I know I’m waking up so I can at least control making my bed. The easiest about being an actress? I wouldn’t say easy is the word. I’d say it’s more of my passion taking over— that I really love what I do. I’m not stuck in a job where I wish I were doing something else. I’m doing what I want to so I’m just grateful. Sometimes I hate that I love doing it so much.

Elaborate on that. What do you mean you hate that you love it? What does that mean? Well, it’s frustrating when you can’t do something the way you envisioned it as far as acting. I always wish I had a degree and was just a doctor. Mind you, I think I’ve idealized this but I would enjoy the aspect of just being a doctor and no one questions that. With acting, yes, you can still get a degree but you still constantly question if you’re “enough” or if you’re even good at it. There’s no real tangible scale. There’s no way in your heart that you can know you’re good. I’m not sure that makes sense. It makes perfect sense. You can have people around you saying the performance is perfect but you know it didn’t come out the way you envisioned it and only you know that. You rehearsed it differently and then you see it on screen and it’s different from what you felt when you were in the scene. The challenge of that I’m sure is the love hate aspect. As you said, you make an appointment with a doctor, a doctor will be there, a doctor will ask certain questions. Whereas you can do a MILLION different things with a role. And, somebody else would do a MILLION different things than you with that role so I can understand how it’s challenging to gauge if you’re making the right choices. I mean, yeah. So incredibly well put. You look at the pages in front of you and you can do it so many different ways. A doctor, they perform the operation, and hopefully they DON’T do the operation a hundred different ways each time. Hopefully there’s just ONE way and they’re perfect at it. That sounds nice (laughing). What kind of character would you most like to play in the future? I love drama and the raw emotion. But I think I would like to just play an action woman you know? I want to kick some doors down. I have this image of me half-way between Tarzan and half way between Lara Croft. Yeah I really like that!

here is no doubt that beauty means business. So it’s not that far of a stretch for a successful business woman of Fortune 500 companies to retire and realize that she couldn’t just let a hole in the skincare world go unfilled. Maya Crothers, Founder of Circ Cell, found her skin compromised when settling in harsh-weathered Jackson Hole, Wyoming and decided to do something about it. With a strong belief that skincare should feel like pure luxury while performing to the highest clinical standards, Crothers concocted exacting formulas for all skin types, in all environments. hen the train pulled away from downtown L.A.’s Union Station I kept thinking, “I barely have time for this trip.” And I’m not the only one with a full plate. Everyone I know seems to busier than ever. From the time we wake up to when our eyes close at night, every second is scheduled. And right next to my packed schedule is some device to help manage it all.
A smartphone, laptop or tablet helps you stay connected to your messages, work, current events, your next meal, and friends and family. The aforementioned devices are designed to make our lives easier, but how many times have I caught myself looking when I really don’t need to? As soon as I put my phone away, the train turned onto rocky cliffs, and the Pacific Ocean re#121 issue - BELLOmag.com
vealed itself to me. As we kept moving, in the distance, a whale came up for air. My impulse was to take a picture. But knowing that they take many minutes to surface while riding a high-speed train, I chose to be in the moment. And that’s how the weekend went. All of my pre-planned tasks were accomplished without reaching for my phone.
I was engaged with the scenery and people. I barely thought about whether to check my email, Facebook, or take a picture. San Diego is a breathtaking city, and one false glance at a glowing rectangle means you’ll miss something spectacular. So when it came to figuring out how long it would take to get from the 54
Amtrak station to the Bayfront Spring Hill Suites, I did it the old-fashioned way. I simply asked a local, who pointed in the seaside direction and said, “It’s right there.” I made a quick survey of my surroundings during my daytime arrival and noticed the hotel’s massive yellow stripe on the side of the building, which appeared like a beacon, impossible to miss from any point in downtown. There would be no need to pull out my phone to locate my temporary home.
SPRINGHILL SUITES & RESIDENCE INN HOTEL The SpringHill Suites is a brand-new development built on the old site of the historic Lane Field baseball park where the Pacific Coast League Padres played from 1936 to 1957. Baseball fans can enjoy the Padres Memorial Park just outside the Suites. The hotel took nearly two years to build and is part of what is now called Broadway at Pacific Highway. The design clearly demonstrates the architect’s thoughtfulness, anticipating any guest’s needs with its ideal location and amenities created for extended stays. Each room has a kitchen with a coffeemaker, microwave and fridge. The office area has a window-facing desk that makes the bedroom and lounge area seem like a one-bedroom suite. After checking in and surveying the expansive bay-and-city skyline views and the fifth-floor outdoor swimming pool, the neighborhood beckoned 55

with restaurants. My next stop: Harbor House. Open for thirty years and part of the well-known Seaport Village, Harbor House offers local beers that pairs perfectly with their seafood-laden menu. Try their fresh oysters and savor their famous, hearty Cioppino fish stew, a combination of Dungeness crab, clams, shrimp, scallops, squid, mussels and fish combined with fresh tomatoes in a wine sauce served with toasted sourdough.
A DOWNTOWN SEGWAY TOUR For those unfamiliar with the city, the San Diego Highlights Segway Tour can get you acquainted quickly. A short training session shows you how to start, stop, spin and stay upright. Taking in the city at six miles per hour and slightly above the fold was incredible. Riding a Segway while taking in the scenery kept my full attention. I didn’t reach for my phone once. The tour took us through the historic Gaslamp Quarter and lush Balboa Park, then on to La Jolla to see its wondrous caves, coastlines and weathered cliffs.

“This place is truly beautiful,” I said to myself. Taking a picture wouldn’t do it justice.
HARBOUR CRUISIN’ I headed back to SpringHill Suites to shower and change into some nighttime wear for our harbor cruise. De-
pending on the day of the week, there is a cruise ship with different themes that cater to any taste. Ours was “Hops On The Harbor,” complete with local beer, a spectacular DJ, and stunning views of the waterfront. Wine Wednesdays and the Prime Rib Dinner cruise also caught my eye -- as did the three-storied ship which took us out for two hours,

underneath Coronado Bridge, and past bustling shipyards where crews were putting finishing touches on U.S. naval vessels. There was time for watching a sunrise from my suite, which had completely unobstructed views of the USS Midway, the bridge and beyond. My after-
noon train left enough time for brunch at Cafe 21 to have one of their cast iron omelettes. But first, I had to deal with something called “Seg Leg, a slight soreness in my leg and foot after that Segway tour. My remedy was a 60-minute rejuvenating foot and leg massage at Massage & Tea. Their gorgeous and relaxing atmosphere had many of-
ferings, from deep tissue to facials. But their spectacular sea salt foot massage was worth every penny. By the time I had to board my train back to Los Angeles, I could officially release my phone from captivity. But, I asked myself, would I want to?
