In this issue, one of our intentions is to pay homage to the key role of hair in fashion editorials with this cover by our main photographer, Thomas Louvagny, and hairstyle by Robert Steinken. More than often, when producing a story, we tend to focus on the styling and how it matches the mood and model. We usually go even further developing some guidelines in terms of makeup, thus leaving the hair styling as the last piece we add to the puzzle. We also would like to express our sensations about producing fashion in Los Angeles and how all elements are more connected than ever. LA is becoming the epicenter of fashion and arts, with everything happening here and the strong feeling that there is still more to come. Big names in the industry like Tom Ford, who moved back to Los Angeles last spring, and Tommy Hilfiger opening his road show in LA last year, not participating in NYFW. “The casual, cool, chic look that is leading the fashion world this season was born and bred in LA and I knew this show would feel at home on Venice Beach,” Tommy Hilfiger stated back then. QP continues to self-produce most of the editorials included in this issue, with a growing family supporting us: photographers, models, stylists, makeup artists, showrooms,… MUCH OBLIGED! LYON Voice of the Savanna Steven lyon, once in front of the camera, found a new love for being behind it, producing legendary works that are nothing short of breathtaking. With his stunning creations come divine moments of natural beauty, some we rarely see in the tuned-out industry today. Of course, with every new love comes a new passion. Lyon traveled to South Africa for a shoot, but the land gave him so much more, inviting him into a story he felt must be shared. He then continued his life to create the enthralling short film “Something That Matters” about the endangerment of Rhino’s, alongside his non-profit charity Lyonheartlove.

“Bring back the beauty of the amazing top models and leave realIty TV stars to Instagram”

LARA STONE

You are described as an enigma on multiple occasions, how do you

/30

feel about said name relating to you? Well, since it means someone who can go from Zero to Hero. I’m not sure! I think its because I’ve always taken images as I see them. Not necessarily following the current trend. What finally struck you to film the documentary of poaching of endangered wildlife “Something That Matters”? I was on safari in South Africa and my guide let me in on the horrific situation facing the rhinos. He also told me he was planning to walk 1,000 kilometers across Africa over 3 months and when I heard that, I said I wanted to come and make a film. Do you believe it is more than just a documentary but a message? Or is it truly just informational? Well, it’s a journey. My journey. Over the course of 1,000 kilometers my eyes were opened and real heroes came forward to tell their story. Yes, it’s about the rhino, but it is also about discovery. How do you feel “Lyonheartlove” will grow in the future and are you afraid of it possibly growing too big in turn becoming more of a business than a nonprofit organization? I have plans for the non-profit. I have two book projects that will be for charity and the name ‘Something that Matters´ I have plans for to raise money and awareness to poaching and wildlife conservation. You have worked with such designer giants both in front and behind the camera, which perception do you believe you have enjoyed the most over three decades of being in the industry? Modeling was more fun, I think! But I’m much more satisfied with my photography. I love taking images. Weather its women, men or wildlife. It’s all creative. I always create a cool evironment to work in. Photography and fashion should be fun! Recently I’ve done a few modeling jobs again after 20 year hiatus. It was really cool and more fun then ever. No pressure… HAHA its great to be on a set and not be in charge. You have crossed from two different worlds periodically in your work. From the high fashion photography to the raw image and truth of a photo, how have you married these two stars and made them one through the pure emotion of a picture? It’s just a question of what hat your wearing that day. You can capture a moment with no assistants or team or top model. It’s a pure moment. I love that. On the other side it’s really cool to build a set and or create an environment for fashion. Very different but also the same… It’s still my direction and vision and finger on the camera. I believe there is an esthetic to my imagery that just happens. It’s me. Like it or not. What drew you back to Paris after deciding to continue life as a photographer? Paris is where I made my home during my modeling career. And I knew when I became a photographer it´s where I had to be. If I had to learn my craft in America I would be a different shooter.

There is so much more freedom in Paris regarding creativity, sensuality and also nudity that you just can´t do in the States… I love Paris! How would you say the female form contributes to the overall aesthetic of the photograph? Oh! It’s huge! I love the female form and respect women immensely. As you know, I shoot a lot of nudes and my work is very sensual in general. But I like to think I empower women in my images. They own the moment. I like that. What does it represent to you? I simply find the female and male form utterly … beautiful. You have many captivating black and white photographs. How do you feel it speaks more than color? It doesn’t speak more… Just different. I love shooting color film. My work is very cinematic and I like to combine both in an editorial. The last years I’ve shoot mostly fine art and that world likes black and white. I also love the simplistic film noir look of black and white imagery. But it’s more challenging to shoot a great color image. Why do you prefer location over studios? Why wouldn’t I rather be in Cuba versus a studio? I love to travel! So I’ve combined my love to explore with my love for taking images. I like to create a mini movie in an image. That being said… I’m very convertible in the studio and it’s a great day! Pisses my off when I hear people say I only shoot location or black and white for that matter. After working through the glamour of the 80’s to the present “less is more” era, how would you say the flow of design has changed over the years in the industry? Social media has really changed creativity and fashion. Every one is a photographer and few today even know how to read a light meter. But there are some great young photographers and many of the industry icon shooters are still shooting. But the industry has really changed. The glamour is gone. Now it’s all commerce… bring back the beauty of the amazing top models and leave reality TV stars to Instagram. Do you believe in pure perfection of a photograph, or that perfection is merely an idea and the imperfections is what make up a “good picture”? I detest fake looking or staged imagery. It’s the photographer’s job to create a moment and capture it. I don’t see that as much as I would like to. I prefer the imperfections of a moment to make it memorable and beautiful… The overly retouched digital files have gone too far and I believe the industry is over it. Where would you say your ambition to be both photographer and filmmaker is derived from? Many years ago I was an actor and my photography over time has become a mini movie. For me it’s the next frontier of creativity. I just finished writing my first screenplay called ‘The Love We Deserve’ and plan to direct it in 2018. Where will we find Steven Lyon in the coming years? On a film set.

TRAVEL GUIDE

ARUBA

, ONE HAPPY ISLAND BY VALENTINA SOLCI @valentinasolci

Breathtaking, adventurous, exotic… these are just a few words to describe all the splendor that this Dutch-owned Caribbean island has to offer! Aruba is situated off the coast of Venezuela and makes up one of the three Lower Antilles islands. The island has a very diverse population, with most of its citizens coming from a mixed European, Arawak heritage. Locals often speak at least four languages, including Dutch, Papiamento, Spanish, and English. With so much to explore on this “One Happy Island”, it is quite hard to narrow down all of the options. However, here are some of the top recommendations to check out when visiting the island.

/54

/55

BEST BEACHES Palm Beach: One of Aruba’s most popular beaches,

is the oceanfront view to many of the resorts that align the island’s northwestern coast. This beach is perfect for any first-time tourists who are staying in the area and would like easy access to restaurants, shopping centers, and local activities. While tanning beneath the Caribbean sun, feel free to stop by the Ritz-Carlton’s DIVI, an outdoor bar and lounge area, for some refreshing tropical drinks and locally caught seafood.

Surfside Beach: An ideal location for all, found in the capital, Oranjestad, just a few minutes away from Aruba’s airport. Its serene waters are perfect for an early morning paddle boarding excursion or an afternoon picnic. Nearby this pristine beach, you can

also explore Renaissance Mall & Marketplace, which houses luxury fashion houses, such as, Rolex, Louis Vuitton, and Gucci.

Baby Beach: A picturesque lagoon located in the

southernmost point of Aruba, specifically in the town of San Nicolas. One of the best activities to do at this beach is to go snorkeling. The calm, turquoise water, in combination with the coral sea life, allows for endless hours of exploration and fun in the sun. However, if you are looking to be even more adventurous, then hop on over to JADS Dive Center. Here, certified dive instructors will provide you with a one-of-a-kind experience through the depths of Aruba’s immense coral reef system. However you end up spending your day, make sure to stop by El Ancla, a large red anchor near the seaside, for a memorable picture to share with your friends and family.

/56

UNIQUE EXPERIENCES Rancho Daimari: When visiting a new place, one is

always inclined to get some sort of tour, whether it be by a local, set up by your concierge, or, perhaps, even by helicopter. If you want to escape urban life for a bit, then head on over to the island’s windy eastern side to find Rancho Daimari. Rancho Daimari is a well-known horse ranch by the sea specializing in giving guided tours. Tour groups range between 4 to 10 people a group, with two friendly staff members leading the way. There are several different tour packages, however, one of the most popular goes to Aruba’s natural pool, which is surrounded by large rock formations and holds an array of sea life beneath the surface. Everyone joining the tour is bound to leave with a smile on their face after riding beautifully trained horses, meeting other adventurers, and enjoying the tropical, yet windy climate of the Daimari Beach area.

California Lighthouse: Migrating up towards

Noord, a city area in Aruba’s northernmost tip, you can find another historic site in which guests visit daily. The

California Lighthouse was built during the years 1914 to 1916, after a wooden steamship from Liverpool, known as the S.S. California, crashed onto the nearby shoreline. Today, it remains to be a perfect spot to take photos, watch the sunset, or even visit the neighboring Antilla Shipwreck, Arashi Beach, and the Tierra del Sol Golf Course.

Renaissance Island: This is a privately-owned is-

land by Renaissance Aruba Resort and is found directly in front of Oranjestad. Though guests staying at this hotel have free access to the island, non-guests are also welcomed to purchase day passes and roam around the island. The two key features that make this island so iconic are its flamingo and iguana wildlife population. All adult visitors are encouraged to stop by Flamingo Beach and interact with the flamingoes that populate the turquoise shoreline. This is such a unique experience that can be further enjoyed with some tasty drinks and openair message sessions. Additionally, Renaissance Island has another beach, known as Iguana Beach, that is welcomed to all ages and is home to many Iguanas that tan by the water. Though they may look scary, these reptiles are harmless and are used to human interaction.

TROPICAL NIGHTS

for hosting private parties, special events, and bringing live DJs to the stage. Everyone is welcome as long as your up for some late nights and good vibes.

Paseo Herencia Mall: This entertainment center is

Pelican Pier: Floating atop the crystal-clear water great for those casually roaming around the Palm Beach in Aruba’s Palm Beach area. During the daytime, Pelican Pier is an activity center providing guests with water sports, such as windsurfing, snorkeling, and parasailing. The pier then opens its seafood restaurant at 5:00 pm, transforming it from a fun, active spot to a more quiet, romantic dining scene. Those visiting this spot can enjoy the majestic sunset and then engulf in the quietness of the night sky.

area. It is filled with dainty fashion boutiques, delicious restaurants and bakeries, a movie theater, and a bowling alley. It is open throughout the day and night; however, it is most busy between 7:00 and 9:00 pm.

South Beach Nightclub: Best for those who en-

joy big crowds and live music. This bar and nightclub is located on the northwest coast of the island, not too far away from the resorts of Palm Beach. It is best known

Well, there you have it, some of Aruba’s most world-renowned sites to visit. Whether you are a new or regular visitor, these locations are sure to captivate you into the history, culture, and energy of the island, leaving you assured that Aruba is, indeed, “One Happy Island”.

CHLOÉ LLOYD

When and where would you say you had your first thoughts of wanting to be a part of the empowering fashion photography world? I wouldn’t say I am a fashion photographer, I shoot women more as a portrait photographer. I am interested in how someone looks and feels in front of my camera rather than what they are wearing. My father was a very successful art director and commercial photographer, and I grew up very aware of the power of an image, but it took me until I was 29 to pick up a camera. Do you believe one can truly capture a moment, or is it merely the essence of it that we are grasping? You are always capturing a moment when you take a photo, whether it is a contrived moment, or a raw moment. The essence of a photo I believe is determined by the viewer.

/72

You are a very empowering woman and speak words of encouragement to any woman who may come to your page. Where would you say you derive this generosity of the human spirit? Thank you! That’s so lovely. I do what I do because I have a true passion for making someone feel good about themselves. This is what drives me in life I grew up surrounded a lot of strong beautiful women, who showed each other true support. Telling someone they are amazing or beautiful takes nothing away from you. How would you say the act of self-discovery for a woman impacts her life? I spent my late 20s working on myself, changing my belief system, challenging my thoughts and learning to be comfortable with who I was. You have to put the work in, which can be painful at times, and trust me never ends… every decade is different. Once you think you know who you are, life changes all over again. Being as authentic as you can possibly be is key. Cry if you need to, get mad if you need to, don’t tell someone something if you don’t believe it, surround yourself with right people, don’t do anything that doesn’t sit right, and learn to trust your instinct.

“I am in love with the art of capturing a moment in time which reveals someone’s beauty, inner and outer.”

You have said that “life is too short ladies, don’t dull your shine, don’t worry about the unnecessary, or try to change what makes you beautiful.” Have you always had this inspiring mindset?

No!! I was a 20 something too a one point! I worried about everything to do with my appearance, and would have loved to have changed several things! I also tried to make myself smaller to allow others to feel better about themselves. I mean literally, I would never wear heels being quite tall already, so as not to stand out too much! As you get older acceptance is much easier and I have worked hard at all other aspects of my life in order to not have to put such a great emphasis on the way I look. You wrote that you are inspired by the supermodels of the 80’s, which would you say is the most galvanizing to you and your work? I loved all of them, but I adore Cindy Crawford.

What was your first exposure to the GUESS brand? What was it like working for such an iconic brand? The Guess campaigns are timeless and classic. The women own their sexuality, and the brand understands the power of the simplicity in black and white photography. Paul Marciano discovered my work through my friend and muse, model Chloe Lloyd and contacted me to test for them. Having my work recognized by the creator of so many iconic images was a highlight of my career. What attracts you to shoot for weddings? The journey. The human connection and the challenge. You have very little control on a wedding day, it’s not your choice of venue/dress/flowers/details etc…. yet you have to use what you have been given and find a way to make it look amazing on camera. It’s good to be out of control sometimes, it pushes you.

“Guess campaigns are timeless and classic. The women own their sexuality, and the brand understands the power of the simplicity in black and white photography”

How did you make the transition from 10 years in front of the camera as a television presenter to a passion for being behind the camera? I only bought a camera to take on holiday with me initially. It was supposed to be a hobby, but much like setting eyes on my now husband 10 years ago, I knew from first sight/first touch that the camera (canon40d) was going to change my life. I could not put it down, I was obsessed and taught myself everything just through trial and error. How do you go about connecting with the women you shoot and developing a somewhat relationship with them to truly capture their moment? The connection comes from trust. They don’t even have to like you, but if they trust that you only want to get the best from them, you will get the best from them. Has there ever been a shoot you’ve done that did not exactly go to plan, but worked out in the end? Once of the first tests shoots we did for Guess was

in Monaco. We flew to Monaco for some sun, as it was winter, and the UK is permanently grey! From the moment we touched down, it did not stop storming for 2 days. We had a beautiful villa/pool/grounds etc to shoot in, and it was the worst weather they had seen for 10 years. On day 2, I got so annoyed we went out with numerous umbrellas, stood under trees and got what we need in 15 minutes before the equipment got soaked…. We had to completely do a 180 on the style/lighting of the shoot, but it was that or go home empty handed. Did you face any obstacles when first starting out as a photographer? Becoming a business. I was lucky in that I have always been paid for what I do, I didn’t spend very long at all working for free. I was lucky in that people saw a value in what I was doing and they wanted to pay me for it! Learn about business, and always treat what you do as business. If you don’t, no one else ever will. After your experience of shooting for GUESS, what are your plans for future opportunities as you are in very high demand? Will you look to continue your business as a fashion forward photographer? Going forward I am looking at teaching some courses on shooting women, I also have an online print shop I am setting up, and I want to get myself on some courses, to learn more about retouching mainly. I would like to step out of my comfort zone a little more and say yes to more commercial work.
