Our mission is to help women discover who they are in Christ and the difference we can make when we simply allow God to work within us. This requires that we have a relationship with Him and we nurture our relationship by seeking Him, and we seek Him in the quiet place.
Fall 2021 | Sit still my daughter 5
From her desk And say unto him, Take heed, and be quiet; fear not, neither be fainthearted for the two tails of these smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin with Syria, and of the son of Remaliah. Isaiah 7:4 I know this seems like a strange verse with which to begin our Fall edition, but it holds a beautiful message for us. Judah has just received word that they are about to be attacked, filling their hearts with fear. God gives Isaiah and his son the task of delivering these words to King Ahaz. While the word “still” is not directly used, it is intimated in the phrase, “be quiet” which means to be still, to settle.
never be forgotten or misplaced. Centuries after the events recorded in Scripture, we can gain the same confidence as the original recipients because it is there for us to soak in and meditate on, over and over again. Each miracle, deliverance, and assurance recorded, is meant to renew our faith in the One who did it all. The verse in Isaiah is precious because God was aware of the fear that had gripped the heart of His people. He did not diminish their fear, He simply gave them a promise that was bigger than their fear, a certainty they could claim:
How often have our hearts become unsettled by some news that prompts a nameless fear of the unknown? We become overwhelmed with an anxiety that creeps over our body. It’s a struggle to breathe and focus on even the simplest of tasks. While we know God cares and that He loves us, our minds wrestle with the idea of sitting still. How can we sit still in these moments of chaos and fear? The answer is, we can when we fix our eyes on the One whose perfect love casts out fear. When we reach out and grasp the promises found in His Word, promises that are as true today as the day they were given.
Thus saith the Lord God, It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass. Isaiah 7:7
This drives home the importance of daily spending time in God’s Word. Unlike early Christians, we do not have to rely on it being passed down orally. He chose to gift it to us in written form so that it can
Choose to take Him at His Word and when the fears sweep over your soul, just remember this verse, let the God who delivered His people from their enemy deliver you from yours.
What a beautiful promise, that we too can be quiet or still for the same reasons. To be still means you are choosing to let go of your worry and fear in exchange for the peace that passes all understanding. My friends, God does not want us to live in fear or to be anxious. This is why He invites us to know Him because, the more we do, the deeper our faith becomes, a faith that enables us to sit still––to be still and know that He is God.

Harvest Time by Elaine Knotts
The seasons are changing oh the colors this time of year. It's a rainbow of orange, yellow, reds, and browns, as if the good Lord hand painted each leaf as you see them scattered on the ground. Harvest time is upon us, the wheat crops are blowing gently in the breeze. We must reap while the time is right, before the opportunity can't be seized. The Lord provided us with a vast harvest, He told us the workers were few, We need to go to the field of men and introduce them to the One who died in their stead. The days are getting shorter, harvest moon looms high in the sky. The smells of wood burners in the neighborhood is a reminder there's a chill in the air tonight. We have a harvest of friends and family that the Lord has blessed us with. And we will gather together and share the Lord's blessings and be grateful for each one of them.

by Sarah Schurman She looked so familiar but they struggled to place her.
Suddenly a name appeared in their mind but it came out more like a question, "Is this Naomi?" they called. The woman quickly corrected them, "don't call me Naomi, call me Mara." How did a woman whose name meant pleasant become one desiring to be known by a name meaning bitterness? Surely this was no overnight transformation, but one born over the previous decade. Naomi's story begins with her husband's decision to leave the land of their nativity, to journey to the neighboring Moab in an effort to escape the famine that gripped Bethlehem. This choice would yield severe consequences that shook the very foundation of Naomi’s life, making her vulnerable to the root of bitterness. First came her husband's death, followed by that of her two sons ten years later. Now as a widow with no sons, she chooses to return home to Bethlehem since the famine was long over and her people were preparing to enjoy a bountiful harvest. While she was returning to the familiar, she was no longer the same, bitterness had consumed her soul. The episode in front of her curious neighbors was not the first time the influence of bitterness revealed itself. Even as she began her homeward journey, her two daughters-in-law accompanying her, she soon
Fall 2021 | Sit still my daughter 11
12 Sit still my daughter | Fall 2021
stopped and urged them to turn back. She urges them with kind words, desiring to see the Lord bless them. "And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother's house: the Lord deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me." Ruth 1:8 But as the conversation continues, it becomes clear that, while Naomi wishes for God to bless others, she seems to think that God cannot or will not bless her. "Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons; Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the Lord is gone out against me." Ruth 1:12-13
Naomi tells the girls that the hand of the Lord has gone against her as if to say that He no longer cared for her. Tragically, she understands that the Lord is good, just not to her. He can bless others but she thought there were no more blessings for her. Something else transpires in this conversation that reveals what happens when one is consumed by bitterness. At the same time Naomi wishes the Lord to deal kindly with them she is also sentencing her daughters-in-law to eternal damnation. “And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law.” Ruth 1:15 In her state of bitterness Naomi is blind to the hopeless fate she is condemning her daughters-in-law to by sending them back home, a pagan land that worships false gods. That is the danger of succumbing to bitterness, it clouds our ability to see the needs of others, pulling us into a dark hole that separates
Fall 2021 | Sit still my daughter 13
us from everything that is good and hinders us from caring for the souls of those around us. Ruth is saved through her own tenacity, her determination to love a woman who was not at all loveable at the moment. The words couples love to recite at weddings were not uttered to a spouse but spoken to a bitter, grumpy woman who was wrapped up in bitterness and anger over what she no longer had, feeling there was only one person responsible for her loss, God.
This is another danger of bitterness; it makes us vulnerable to Satan’s lies about God. Listen to what Naomi says about God; the terms she uses to describe her relationship with God are by no means flattering "I went out full and the Lord hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the Lord hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?" Ruth 1:21 When she left with her husband to the pagan land of Moab, outside of the realm of God’s promised land, she was full. All that she needed was there, her husband and two sons. Now she had returned and, in her mind, it was the Lord’s fault that she was alone, that she was empty. It makes you wonder what went through Ruth’s mind to hear that Naomi felt alone even though she had made the selfless sacrifice to come with her and committed herself to caring for Naomi. She goes on to say that the Lord has testified against her. The word testified carries the idea to give evidence as a witness in a trial. Naomi believes that God has witnessed against her and that He has also afflicted her. This is a strong accusation; this word means to spoil by breaking to pieces. What a heartbreaking lie she speaks in front of all her neighbors that God has spoiled her, spoil means that something is unfit so, in essence Naomi is saying that God has made her unfit by breaking her in pieces making her feel that she is utterly destroyed and useless. Before we condemn Naomi for her shocking utterance about God, we might want to look within and ask ourselves if we have ever thought this about God. So often we don’t speak what we think but even unspoken words can have an effect on our behavior and perception. We can say we believe God is good and even wish His blessings on others but deep within our hearts we are convinced that He doesn't love us. We feel that His hand is against us, that we have been completely spoiled and broken into so many pieces
14 Sit still my daughter | Fall 2021 that it would be impossible to reassemble them. We too have given way to Satan’s lies and have lost the ability to see God for who He truly is––kind, compassionate, merciful, gracious, patient, and loving. This is the tragedy of her story, that she has lost hope in the One who is the eternal hope, unable to see anything good, the power of bitterness showing itself fully in her life. Thankfully it is not the end of her story. While Naomi has failed to see God as her loving Heavenly Father, He has not failed to see her as His daughter. This is the magnificence of our God, even when we walk away from Him, even when we falsely accuse Him, He never ceases to love us and He never stops pursuing us. Naomi wore the veil of bitterness which prohibited her from realizing what a state she was in, it was as if she was groping around in the dark. Those who are lost in bitterness need someone to lead them back to the truth and God in His abundant mercy gave Ruth to Naomi, who unconditionally demonstrated love to her and a group of women to speak truth into her heart. Hear what these women had to say to Naomi in Ruth 4:14-15 “And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the Lord,
which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel. And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him.” So much was stated in these two verses, these women held nothing back from Naomi but forced her to realize just how blessed she was and how good God had been to her. She was not forsaken and never had been, God had provided her a kinsman. His hand has been at work the entire time, orchestrating such a beautiful ending for His beloved in the form of a grandson. The women acknowledged her loss, but they also recognized what her grandson would do for her, he would be a restorer of her life and a nourisher of her old age. The word restorer means “to turn back, reestablish” and nourisher means “to nourish thy gray hairs”. What an amazing gift God has bestowed upon Naomi, she who had lost two sons receives another, one who will care for her as she continues to age. He is also a restorer, one who reestablishes something that has been lost. Naomi had lost her way, she had allowed bitterness to come between her and God but through this child her relationship had been restored,
Fall 2021 | Sit still my daughter 15
it had been reestablished. The women of the village were instrumental in helping to remove the veil placed by bitterness and allowed Naomi to see for the first time that God never forsook her, He never forgot about her, and He never once faltered in His love to her. She had suffered loss, experienced deep grief, and endured much sorrow, but God was there even when she could not see it and gave her a sweet end because He is always good. As we go through life we will become acquainted with heartache, pain, and sadness, making us susceptible to the lies of our enemy. In those moments of weakness, it is easy to believe God does not care and let bitterness begin to take root but we must not. It is paramount that we be aware of the “Naomi syndrome” and conscious of its symptoms so that we can avoid falling victim to it. The only antidote to such lies is the truth found in God’s word; we must be students of the precious book of life, familiar with the passages that remind us of the unfailing, unchanging character of our God; only then can we triumph in the midst of sorrow and see clearly just how wonderful is the God we serve, whom we can call our Abba, Father.

Like most girls, I grew up dreaming of the day I
would meet that special man, fall in love, marry and have our own sweet babies. Teenage time came, with all its insecurities, awkwardness, hopes, joys, growing pains, and dreams so tantalizingly close to coming true. But the years passed and nothing seemed to happen. There was so much restlessness, times of questioning, of hope, of rejection, of maturing, of learning, of hopes raised then dashed, and, after a while, hope renewed again. Now graduated from college, as an “older” single adult, I saw little reason to hope that this dream— this prayer of my heart—would ever be fulfilled. Most of my friends were already married with several children while I continued single. It seems to me that a million times I would achieve peace with that fact, only to almost sink in despair a million times more. All the usual questions tried my faith––Why God? –– Is there something wrong with me? –– Am I not godly enough or content enough? –– Are there no good, godly men left? –– Is there no one that could love me and I love him enough to choose each other for life? –– Will I never know the joy of being a mother? –– Did you put this desire and prayer in my heart only to torture me? Firstly: My heart knew the answer. Of course not! First of all, God doesn’t do things to harm us! (1 John 1 ...in Him is no darkness at all. James 1:17 ...in Whom is no... shadow of turning. [He isn’t a traitor.]) Everything He does is for our good, to make our spirit and soul like His Son. (Romans 8:28) He gives us desires and dreams (Psalm 37:4) and He desires to give us every good thing. (Psalm 84:11) However, the greatest good thing He wants for us is to have a close relationship with Himself and to be like Him. (Romans 8:29) Everything about how God works or what He allows in our lives is rooted in His love for us and in this truth. God is love. (1 John 4:16)
at the moment) and most times it is only for a season. Thirdly: Are there really good godly men to be found? Yes, though not prevalent in every place, they do exist. One who would also love me AND I him? (Because only reciprocal love is a worthy basis for marriage.) That is what I must trust God with— and that is what is most hard. To see years go by with nothing happening, feeling that, though the rest of life was progressing while with my hopes for marriage were at a standstill, was a real grief to me.
I dealt with these lessons so many times as the years passed. I would pray, and seek to also make space in my life for God to answer my prayers. Many Secondly: Marriage and children (or any good times, I had to pray, “I believe, Lord, help Thou mine unbelief!” thing for that matter) are not a special prize for the best behaved, most talented, incredibly beautiful, or My dear, sweet mother, greatest of friends, awesomely spiritual. People of all sorts marry and have became gravely ill—it was the dreaded cancer, stage children. We don’t receive good things because we four. It pained my heart more than anything to know deserve them. Marriage is a gift, a gracious gift from she would not long be there to share my thoughts or God. (James 1:17) Singleness is also a gift (1 Corinthians 7:7) (though it may seem impossible to see it so to rejoice with me on my wedding day, on the day I

far left: enjoying a beautiful day. above: my brothers and I on graduation day. left: my sweet mother and I. knew I was carrying a new life, on the day I birthed her and my dad a new grandchild. My husband would not know what a great mother in-law she would be, my children would never hear her voice or know her care when we visited. My dream and deep desire of myself giving her grandchildren to enjoy was crushed. But even as she left this world to go to heaven, I had no inkling that God was already at work, and little did I know how soon my desire and my dream of romance, marriage, and motherhood would come true. God gives and God takes—all from a heart of the highest, deepest, purest love. Here is our love story from my perspective. August 2016 Roseanne, my youngest sister, and I were at a summer camp in Spain, working as volunteer cooks alongside other Christian ladies, among them, my future husband’s pastor’s wife. As we worked, we
enjoyed great moments of fellowship and encouragement. One afternoon, she and I were working on a task alone together and, of course, the subject surfaced about guys and marriage. That happens all the time, no big deal. But later in the week, she approached me privately and asked if I would mind praying about a certain godly young man she knew. It was apparent that she wanted to bring us together. I consented, but without too much hope that it would go anywhere. “Okay," I responded. “It doesn’t ever hurt to pray about someone. Who?” “Alejandro Méndez from my church,” she said. “Oooh.” I answered, suddenly quite reticent. I knew him, having met him when, as teens we worked at this same camp. We had both been pretty immature at the time. He was a new Christian, and I just thought of
26 Sit still my daughter | Fall 2021 him as ok but annoying. At first, I declined to even consider him, with my impression of him as a teen still on my mind. She wasn’t pushy, but did ask me to at least think about it. A day or so later, she asked again if I would just consider praying about him and if it was okay with me if she spoke to him to pray about me (not telling him anything about her conversation with me of course). I remembered the advice of a good mom friend of mine— “give a good man a chance.” I knew Alejandro was a good man from my own observation and from the testimony of others. So, I decided to go ahead and give him a chance—to pray and see what God would do. That same summer, I flew to the US to help care for my mother after the camps. My mom and I had a chance to chat about Alejandro one day and she said, “He is a good man. I know him and have seen him grow a lot. You should give him a chance.” At the time I didn’t know what would come of things, but I cherish the memory of that special moment deep in my heart. Autumn came, my dear mama went to heaven. It broke my heart—ripped my soul apart. She was a precious mom and friend. In January, Alejandro contacted me and we began a friendship. I was very doubtful it would go anywhere, but left my heart open. We continued to chat from time to time, but nothing unusual. Then, the next December came and Alejandro planned a visit with my family where I was living at the time. (He had been part of a special group of friends who really helped encourage my family through the loss of my mother.) He came to see a beautiful rendition of the Messiah by the awesome provincial choir and orchestra. During this visit, he didn’t say anything outright, but his eyes spoke volumes.
Fall 2021 | Sit still my daughter 27 left: a picture from one of our dates. below: pictures from a day I had waited my whole life, the day Alejandro asked me to be his wife!
A strange twist of events threw us both off track for a few months following this time because unusual circumstances caused us each to think the other wasn’t particularly interested. So, for almost four months all was strangely silent between us. Complicated and tough as it was for both of us, God was absolutely still in control. In His time, and in a unique way, God brought us back together again. Then things really began happening! That summer, we had the opportunity to see each other again in person and consequently quickly became good friends and started dating. A verse that God used to encourage me at the time in giving Alejandro a chance is from Romans 15:13 “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.” It was this verse that encouraged me to take a step of faith, trusting God to lead me and give me wisdom to make good choices in the process of getting better acquainted with Alejandro, of choosing whether or not to date him, and a few months later, of choosing whether or not to marry him. God promises to lead those that trust Him to do so. (Proverbs 3:56) As we each stepped forward, it was exciting to see God answer specific prayers and clearly orchestrate specific circumstances, encouraging us each in our journey through friendship and romance, to marriage.
28 Sit still my daughter | Fall 2021 Living three hours apart made our relationship challenging, but with God’s blessing, we managed it, with a lot of phone calls, cards, gifts, and visits. By December, God had given us both peace about choosing to join our lives and in February, on a surprise visit, Alejandro took me to a nearby beach and asked me to marry him. My heart already was at peace and knew the answer, “Yes!” Having known each other for so long, seeing God’s direct guidance in our lives, and considering our readiness for marriage, we chose to be married as soon as possible, that September. The ensuing months were filled with preparations. I was busy working almost all day every day teaching babies English in the province of Asturias in the north of Spain. Alejandro lived three hours south, working in an office on the military base in Valladolid, Spain. In the midst of our busy schedules, we planned and prepared to join our lives into one. It was a gorgeous balmy Saturday, the 14th of September 2019. So many dreams and prayers came
true, so many hours of waiting over, so much excitement, so much emotion, so much love and joy! Many of our dearest ones came together to witness as we promised our lives to each other all dreamy eyed and in love as it should be. And God smiled, and I like to think that God let my mama have a peek and she smiled too. Now, a year and a half later, through many, many ups and downs, with my husband’s strong, kind arms round me and a sweet, dewy fresh little boy in mine, my heart is full. My soul is singing. God is so gracious. We still have so much to learn, we are so new at this. But during this year and a half, one of the greatest things I’m learning is this: Marriage is not perfect, we are not perfect—No human is perfect, but marriage is good when two imperfect people choose together to fight for “us” instead of “me”, for God instead of myself, every single hour of every single day. It pays off. Love grows deeper with the years and with purposeful cultivation.
Fall 2021 | Sit still my daughter 29
For my single friends out there: you are not alone. You are not forgotten. What you are feeling is what many before you have felt. Keep dreaming. Make space in your life for God to answer. Keep drawing close to God. Let me hasten to say, drawing close to God in the hard times now will not necessarily secure you a mate or any other thing except the joy of knowing Him better and having a stronger relationship with Him. But in the end, that is what truly matters and it will carry you through every season of life with all its ups and downs. Keep growing and learning to be a better you. Keep taking the opportunities and steps of faith that are yours to take and let God surprise you. If and when you do marry, please choose someone who loves God, is emotionally healthy, and loves you—and make sure you are those things as well. Marriage, like any season of life, has its rough spots as well as its joys. These qualities do not promise a perfect marriage, but are essential to get through the difficult places.
May your heart find joy and peace in believing both now and in the future. God bless you and keep us all. PS: I do not endorse any particular way of getting to know someone for the purpose of romance and marriage. Each story is unique and special in its own right. There is no “right or wrong” way of doing things. The only guidelines in the Bible are to do all things honestly, responsibly, and with purity. (Romans 12:17, 1 Timothy 4:12; 5:2) What you call it is beside the point. The important thing to focus, not on attempting to do everything perfectly, but simply living life and following God’s leading for you in a practical manner as you choose someone to marry.
Delight thyself also in the Lord and He shall give thee the desires of thy heart.

I was reared in a Christian home and saved at the
age of 16 after having many years of doubt flood my mind. As a young child around six years old, I followed my best friend’s steps in going forward in church. When I met with my Sunday school teacher all I remember was the word "hell" and what hell was like. It was more of a scared salvation. I did not see myself as a sinner in need of a Savior. I struggled for many years with the doubt and fear of what others would think, knowing I wasn’t saved all those years. Finally, one night in my room I put that pride aside and asked Jesus into my life and to forgive me of my sins. I was baptized soon after. I attended a friend’s church revival during my first year in college where I surrendered my life for whatever the Lord had for me. I was saved, yes, but in that meeting, I came to the realization that my life had never been fully given to the Lord to be used for Him. I remember returning from that meeting and telling a friend about the decision I had just made. I well remember
my last comment to her, "But I don’t think I could ever be a missionary". It’s funny how God took the one thing I said I wouldn’t do to show me what true surrender is. It is not our choosing our path but His choosing it for us. Within that same year I met Joshua, the man destined to be my future husband. We soon became friends and happily served in the local church together, soul winning, RU ministry, nursing home, bus ministry and so on. His heart for the Lord was what drew me to him. He entered college knowing he wanted to be in missions but was, at the time, unsure just where the Lord would send him. He was simply earnestly seeking God’s will continually. I knew from the very beginning, as my heart began to be knit with his, that his

44 Sit still my daughter | Fall 2021 burden to reach Muslims for the Lord was becoming my burden too. I never had any doubt in my mind he was God’s choice for me. We were married in 2010 and God continued to direct our lives. We knew God had called us to reach the Arabic speaking people and with much prayer, counsel, and the leading of the Lord He directed us to go to the country of Lebanon to learn the Arabic language, culture and ministry under an already established Baptist church there in Hadath, Lebanon, being considered one of the "safer" middle eastern countries. Could we have learned Arabic here in the States? Sure, we could have but with Arabic, being one of the top three hardest languages to learn, we knew the best way to study would come by being immersed in it. And it is imperative to learn the culture as well. Oh, how glad I am that we did! When we first arrived in Lebanon, I promptly experienced immediate severe culture shock. The moment we got off the plane I was overwhelmed by many conflicting emotions. The pastor of the church there picked us up from the airport after around a fourteen-hour flight, so you can imagine we were exhausted. In the evening as he took us to our temporary destination, we drove through the towns and I would hear the loud speakers of the call to prayer for the Muslims, Everywhere, little children as young as four years weaved in and out of all the traffic begging for food and money. The sight broke my heart and threatened to overcome my emotions. The pastor continued to tell us that this was very common here. Many orphans, some even “owned” by the older ones were sent out by them to “make” money for them. I sat in that back seat clutching my two young daughters. Julianna was two and a half and Jayla was around three months old at the time. I stared out the window beseeching God to give me the courage to live in this new country. We arrived first at the church where the pastor had some groceries for us and I will NEVER forget this moment! As we remained in the car waiting for the pastor to come back, the back door of the car burst open and a sweet older lady from the church poked her head in, pinched mine and the girls’ cheeks and, in the only words she knew in English greeted us, "I love you". Her face was wreathed with the sweetest smile as, over and over again she continued to say, "I love you, I love you, I love you".

Fall 2021 | Sit still my daughter 45 She had no idea at that time how much her words meant to me. In the midst of my churning emotions at the move there and with her not even knowing us, I sensed it was God's way of showing me that He does know and that He does love me and will take care of me. As the scriptures tell us, He will never leave us nor forsake us. God poured such peace upon my heart at that moment, that I wept quietly as the sweet lady closed the car door. That first month felt longer than the entire two and a half years we lived there. I’m sure others who have moved to foreign countries can testify to that. So much change bursts on us as we learn and try to adapt to the new life and culture. So many people of the church took us under their wings to help us adapt to it all. Without them we probably would have given up very shortly. Two families in particular that really invested in our lives were the pastor and his wife as well as our Arabic teacher and her family. We were graciously received as part of their families, even happily spending holidays with them. They made sure we were never alone, especially during those holiday times when they knew it would be so hard to be away from our own family back home.
46 Sit still my daughter | Fall 2021 Whenever we had a problem or issue the pastor was right there to help us. No matter what time of day he appeared. One particular event that happened shortly after we moved into our apartment. Our family were all sitting in the living room when suddenly we heard loud bang sounds. BOOM and then another BOOM and soon our lights started to flicker and finally completely went out. Being in the Middle East, naturally the first thought that comes to your mind is a bomb. The sound was coming from underneath our apartment where the car garage was located as well. Joshua didn’t seem nearly as concerned as I. But when I opened the door to the hallway, smoke was pouring up the stairs and residents were pounding downstairs from the upper levels. I yelled to Joshua, "There's smoke, a lot of it". Having a terrace, we thankfully could exit safely. So, we grabbed the kids and ran out, still not knowing what in the world was happening.
The neighbors next to our apartment building
kindly invited us to come inside and, in what little Arabic Joshua knew at the time, he gathered there had been an explosion of some sort. These neighbors not only took us in, but fed us and made sure we were ok. We soon called the pastor to let him know what was happening and, sure enough, he came right over as soon as he could. He arrived, to our great relief and, in his excellent English, was able to communicate that someone was trying to steal electricity. In doing so, the thief obviously not an electrician, while messing with the wires, produced the resultant KABOOM! One of the pastor’s favorite sayings to us when something bizarre like that happened was, “Welcome to Lebanon!” We indeed faced a lot of water and electrical situations while living there. Our water supply came from a truck that would arrive about once a week to fill huge water tanks on the roof of the apartment building. However, there were many times when for whatever reason the truck would fail to show up. Regardless of wheth-

Fall 2021 | Sit still my daughter 49 er it was through a lack of rain or whatever the problem, there were many days we went without running water. We soon learned to adapt, though, buying big bottles to store water for just such emergencies. It gave us a greater appreciation for the ready abundance of water back here in the states. Needless to say, the thief was kicked out of the building and had to pay repair costs. We were just thankful for God’s protection as it could have been far worse. Following the first week after our arrival we plunged into our Arabic studies five days a week with a native teacher who went to our church and also taught at a local university. Her daughter was a huge help to us as she would come over as well after school and watch our girls while we were in class. She became very special to us––the whole family did. I could go on and on about all the help and love they showed to us but then this article would turn into a book. Leaving them when coming back to the states was one of the hardest things we experienced. We spent two and a half years with them every day because they also attended the same church with us. We are thankful for technology by which we can still stay in contact somewhat. Middle Eastern people are the most hospitable people one can find anywhere. No one was a stranger. Christian or non-Christian, they will open up their home to you and feed you like royalty. The food
was absolutely amazing and I really miss it. I learned a few dishes and sides from the pastor’s wife as well as my Arabic teacher–– some of which being Kibbeh which is made with lamb meat, warak arish which is stuffed grape leaves, tabbouli which is a parsley type salad just to name a few. Though our time there in Lebanon was short, it was and has been very beneficial to our ministry here in Philadelphia among Arabic speaking people. When ministering to folks in our home now I am able to give them some Middle Eastern hospitality from the wonderful culture I experienced there. Also, of course, speaking their heart language opens up many doors of opportunity to witness. God gave us such a blessed experience in Lebanon and we miss it tremendously but are thankful how God has us here in Philadelphia ministering to these precious people. People need the Lord––I know I do!

I showered and shaved I adjusted my tie. I got there and sat in a pew just in time. Bowing my head in prayer as I closed my eyes. I saw the shoe of the man next to me touching my own. I sighed. With plenty of room on either side I thought, "Why must our soles touch?" It bothered me, his shoe touching mine but it didn't bother him much. A prayer began: "Our Father" I thought, "This man with the shoes has no pride. They're dusty, worn, and scratched. Even worse, there are holes on the side!" "Thank you for blessings," the prayer went on. The shoe man said a quiet "Amen." I tried to focus on the prayer but my thoughts were on his shoes again. Aren't we supposed to look our best when walking through that door? "Well, this certainly isn't it," I thought, glancing toward the floor. Then the prayer was ended and the songs
of praise began. The show man was certainly loud sounding proud as he sang. His voice lifted the rafters, his hands were raised high. The Lord could surely hear the shoe man's voice from the sky.

It was time for the offering and what I threw in was steep. I watched as the shoe man reached into his pockets so deep. I saw what was pulled out, what the shoe man put in. Then I heard a soft "clink" as when sliver hits tin.
and you're the first to say 'Hi'. I know that my appearance is not like the rest, but I really do try to always look my best. I always clean and polish my shoes before my very long walk but by the time I get here they're dirty and dusty, like chaulk."
The sermon really bored me to tears, and that's no lie. It was the same for the shoe man for tears fell from his eyes. At the end of the service as is the custom here. We must greet new visitors and show them all good cheer. But I felt moved somehow and wanted to meet the shoe man.
My heart filled with pain and I swallowed to hide my tears. As he continued to apologize for daring to sit so near. He said, "When I get here I know I must look a sight, but I thought if I could touch you then maybe our souls might unite."
So after the closing prayer I reached over and shook his hand. He was old and his skin was worn and his hair was truly a mess. But I thanked him for coming, for being our guest. He said, "My name's Charlie, I'm glad to meet you, my friend." There were tears but he had a large grin, "Let me explain," he said wiping tears from his eyes. "I've been coming here for months
I was silent for a moment knowing whatever was said would pale in comparison. I spoke from my heart, not my head. "Oh, you've touched me," I said "And taught me, in part; that the best of any man is what is found in his heart." The rest, I thought, this shoe man will never know. Like just how thankful I really am that his dirty old shoe touched my soul.

People's surroundings can impact their emotional state. instantly pervades you when you see or use it? It could Our goal as designers is to help create an environment to influence one’s well-being on a daily basis, presenting a home that is reflective of the owner’s personality and purpose. We believe it is most important to listen and understand someone’s expectations for the impact of their space on themselves and others. Since your home is a sacred space, it is imperative that it evokes positive emotions for everyone who enters.
There are many ways to enhance your daily life with surroundings. When selecting items for your home the focus should be on pieces that draw you and simply make you feel happy. Objects we live with can impact our emotional state by influencing our energy, which directly impacts our overall well-being. As Designers at With Faith + Design we encourage you to pick items that you love and that are meaningful. Place these items with intention around your home to bring you joy.
be a set of old childhood books stacked on a bookshelf, special china for use at the holidays, a chair that is an heirloom, or that landscape painting hanging over the mantle. It’s the feelings of warmth and the memories that flood over you, which fill your home with love. To the world the objects may be just things, but to you they are priceless. Placing meaningful objects around your home helps create these positive emotions.
Artwork is very personal and should speak to you. We believe that art displayed in your space can provide a positive impact. Consider adding your favorite artists, quotes, and family photos into your environment that you can reflect on. Think about the colors of the art in the composition. Does the palette make you come alive inside when you look at it? Take time to admire different artwork to see what speaks to you and learn what feelings it evokes inside you. Objects carry energy and influence our emotions. You will know it is right when these feelings stir up Do you have something a loved one gave you (maybe inside of you. Fall 2021 | Sit still my daughter 57 In a family room, a gallery wall displaying family memories brings back those joyful times together. A bold pop of fun and cheerfulness will set the mood throughout your home and evoke positive, lively responses. Here are some helpful points to implement in order to create a positive environment. 1. Set an Intention. How can your home bring you joy? Does your space need to be a place to inspire and spark creativity, or perhaps a calm environment for thought and focus; maybe it's a cozy, welcoming space to entertain? Everything in your space should have a purpose and a meaning, and if it does not, then it should not be there. 2. Reflect on Emotions. Take a moment to determine how you want to feel in this space? Think about the exact feelings that you want to retain while in this
environment. Do they represent quiet energy that is peaceful and calm or high energy and excitement? Either way, own all of your feelings and express them in your environment to achieve a purposeful space. 3. Create a Balance. Is your home a mess or is it bare and boring? Balance is very important for creating a welcoming environment. Filler items create clutter, which creates chaos. Decluttering and organizing are very important in creating a flow of positive energy so that your mind can remain calm. Items in your home that do not have purpose can disrupt personal balance and create anxiety. The same holds true that, if your space is empty and without interest, it will not stimulate or motivate your mind. 4. Make it Your Own. How can the space reflect your personality? Favorite items are fundamental to making a space your own. Your space tells your personal story. Color plays an influential role in directly eliciting

Furniture and decor selections should have purpose and personality. A cozy couch and/or comfortable guest chairs may show that you are relaxed and casual and want to create this type of space for visitors. Lighting can warm or cool a space, so choosing the right lighting is paramount. Pictures and accessories are an easy way to showcase personality by displaying items from your travels, family photos, and things you like. 5. Explore your Senses. Think about the five senses (touch, taste, sight, sound, smell). How about relaxing the mood in the room by adding a diffuser with a calming oil to deliver a pleasing aroma throughout your space? What about having a fruit bowl on your kitchen island as a way to remind you to be healthy? Are your loved ones displayed for viewing through-
out the day? Is there space to add a tabletop fountain to create a soothing sound? Are your sofa and chairs comfortable? Some make anxiety a career. In Scripture, the word anxiety is translated into several different English words such as: thought, worry, anxiety, care, fear, and even distracted. Without a doubt, a significant challenge of anxiety is that it divides and distracts our minds so intensely that we either become frozen with fear or gripped with panic. The Bible has many examples of good people who struggled with anxiety. It made Elijah run (1 Kings 17-19), sent Mary and Joseph back to Jerusalem (Luke 2:41-48), caused Martha to complain to
Anxiety may or may not be rooted in a spiritual problem. Several health factors can cause or exacerbate anxiety. If you haven't gone to your doctor for a physical recently, do so as soon as possible. However, please note that, upon hearing the word anxiety, many doctors reach for a prescription pad as their first line of defense. While there are times when medication is needed, a believer should carefully and prayerfully seek wisdom regarding all prescriptions.
Fall 2021 | Sit still my daughter 61
62 Sit still my daughter | Fall 2021 It comforts me to know that the God who created me is sympathetic to my physical weaknesses. "For he knoweth our frame; he understandeth that we are dust" (Psalm 103:14). Regardless of the root cause, anxiety is not an excuse to sin. However, it may be a reason to give yourself permission to be human and in need of help, both heavenly and humanly. Trauma, lack of sleep, certain personality traits, bad habits, faulty coping mechanisms, and sin can all contribute to anxiety and cannot be fixed with medicine. Studies show that most anxiety hinges on life events that need to be worked through, patterns of behavior that need to be unlearned/relearned, and/or sin that must be faced and repented of. Therefore—
Anxiety always comes with choices. What we do when we feel the first twinge of anxiety may not alleviate anxiety, but it will lead us either toward or away from healing. We can choose— • to get help through pastoral, biblical, medical counseling, or all three • to surround ourselves with positive relationships and a healthy church community that will hold us up in prayer • to change dietary habits and what we put into our minds and hearts • to take advantage of getting outside in the sunshine, exercising, and other things that have been known to help lessen anxiety "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us." (Hebrews 12:1). Whether or not physical factors contribute to our anxiety, the spiritual reality must be addressed. Anxiety is always more manageable when I trust my heavenly Father. Right now, as I write this article, I am both a bit anxious and a bit excited. I am also somewhat anxious about getting prepared for an upcoming trip to Canada. If I were to remain completely passive, it is doubtful that either this article or the trip would be successfully completed. So then, is all anxiety sinful? This definition of the word trust has had a profound impact in my life: "Trust is not a passive state of mind. It is a vigorous act of the soul whereby we choose to lay hold on the promises of God and cling to them despite the adversity that at times seeks to overwhelm us." (Jerry Bridges, Trusting God: Even When Life Hurts) I always thought that if I trusted God, I would never have any angst or stirring in my soul. In Philippians 4:6, Paul tells us to be "careful [anxious] for
Fall 2021 | Sit still my daughter 63 nothing." And yet, earlier, he writes that he hopes to send Timothy because he would "naturally care [be anxious]" for the church at Philippi (Philippians 2:1920). The root word for careful (anxiety) and care in these verses is the same. In other words, there is a helpful and an unhelpful “anxiety.” The opposite of anxiety is not peace. The opposite of anxiety is apathy, and apathy doesn’t get anything done. There is a helpful concern that helps us plan for our future, get a job done, and take care of ourselves and others. And then—there’s the other. "Fear," Elisabeth Elliot once said, "arises when we imagine that everything depends on us." The same can be said of anxiety. Concern that humbly takes our cares to the One who is in control is wisdom. Anxiety that controls us is not concern, it is sinful anxiety.
And, while this is just me wondering aloud right now—could it be that Paul's admonition to his young colleague about his recurring stomach issues (1 Timothy 5:23) and the spirit of fear (2 Timothy 1:7) hint at the possibility that Timothy's concern showed the possibility of morphing into sinful controlling anxiety? The truth is, we can prepare and put in a good effort, but we cannot control the outcome. And here is a gentle reminder—complete trust is not just clinging desperately to God's promises. Trust chooses to live within and act upon God’s promises. Rooted deeply in my struggle with anxiety was the doubt that God truly loved me. I knew what His Word told me. But I didn't "feel" like He loved me. Choosing to live within and act on the promise of God’s love began by asking myself—

An amazing thing happened when I decided “What if, just for today, I acted like I was truly to cling to and act on God's promise of love. Gradualloved by God? How would that change my outlook? ly, with tears streaming down my face, I began to feel How would that affect each decision?” loved. If I really believed God loved me, I would step forward in faith and confidence, knowing that He was with me, for me, and guiding me.
Could it be faith and trust in His promises, rather than my feelings, is the foundation of the peace that passes understanding? (Philippians 4:7)?
"But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him" (Hebrews 11:6).
Anxiety presents a unique opportunity for us to glorify the Lord "Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for they truth's sake" (Psalm 115:1).
Fall 2021 | Sit still my daughter 65
There was a time when night after night fear and anxiety robbed me of sleep. In the middle of this painful time period, I sat with my brother, who also happens to be a biblical counselor. Gently, he looked at me and said, "Melissa, what if you have to live with anxiety for the rest of your life? What if your body is so broken that it will be something you always struggle with?" I was appalled. How could that even be a possibility? Of course, God would heal me. But then came the thought, "What if He didn't? What if, like many who are physically broken, God chose to allow anxiety to be my daily companion?”
"Maybe,” he continued, “the question isn't,
'How can I get rid of this anxiety?' but, 'How can I glorify God in the middle of my anxiety?'” Since then, that question has been life-changing for me. It has been the hardest, the best, and the most effective prayer I ever whispered. And, in the middle of that prayer, God was answering another request because— Anxiety is a tool God wants to use to help me become more like Jesus. Anxiety puts sanctification in a whole new light. "And we know that all things work together or good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed
66 Sit still my daughter | Fall 2021 to the image of his Son…" (Romans 8:28-29) We know of the grace that saved our souls and showers us with blessings and favor. But the grace that asks us to stay humbly under God’s hand (1 Peter 5:6-7) is not always entirely comfortable. As we surrender our anxiety, God promises to bring good out of it and, truly, the best good is when Jesus shines through us. The fear that once gripped me is now a thing of the past, but I still must watch its insidious approach making me grateful that— Anxiety will not last forever. "From whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself." Philippians 3:20b-21 "Yes," you say, “but what about now?" Even now, it is doubtful that any anxiety will be lifelong. It may be gone when that exam is passed or when we consider what will actually matter in ten years.
It may end when we stop to remember that God really does love our children more than we do. Or, it may just keep moving to the next thing. Regardless, one day our anxiety will pass and we will regret the time and energy we wasted not resting in Him. So, for now let’s— • Humbly accept our human limitations and let go of control, • Continue making wise choices for healing, and • Choose to live within the promises of the One who knows and loves us best "Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass" (Psalm 37:5).

QUICK TIPS TO PRACTICE WHEN FACED WITH ANXIETY
1
Center yourself with meditation on God’s truth/ Scripture (prepare ahead with truth/Scripture cards) combined with deep breathing. (See Box Breathing–Navy Seals technique.)
Talk to a friend who can pray with you and help you center yourself.
3
Try some R&R: consciously relax your muscles one by one and remind yourself that while you are human, your heavenly Father is working even now on your behalf.

Take time to write everything out on a sheet of paper that is causing you anxiety. Make it as complete as you possibly can. Humbly take each care to the Lord (1 Peter 5:6-7). Often, this exercise shows us how we can’t possibly carry our burdens alone and that we have no choice but to lean on the One who can and will carry them for us.

The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. Psalm 103:8 If we wanted to praise the attributes of our God one by one, it would take us a lifetime. Truly it is impossible to give thanks for all He has done and all He is but in this verse the psalmist highlights four specific things we can give thanks for about our God. • He is merciful. How often have we failed to do what is right? How many times have we sinned against our God, yet He continues to offer us mercy? Mercy cannot be earned; it is not as though we could do a few good things to be stored in an account for the purpose of wiping out our wrongs to balance our account. God chooses to be merciful to us, not because we are worthy but because He loves us. • He is gracious. That means “abounding in compassion”. In a world, often harsh and lacking in this quality, where people selfishly seek only their own best interests, our God pours out His concern for His people in so many ways. He is our example of true compassion and selflessness. • He is slow to anger. He, who has the greatest cause to be angry with us, chooses, rather, to have a long fuse, suffering long with rebellious and obstinate people. We are the offenders, we are the wicked ones, and we are the ones who go astray. For all of this provocation, our God is still slow to anger. • He is plenteous in mercy. As we have seen, our God is merciful but on top of that His mercy is so abundant, we can never exhaust it. We may offend numerous times, perhaps all on the same day, but we may still come to Him and receive mercy. He will never turn us away because His supply has run out; it is limitless, plenteous. The Psalmist begins and ends this chapter by blessing the Lord and this should be our response. He is worthy of praise, adoration, and honor. We, who are filled with selfishness and pride, who rebel on multiple occasions, and yield to the flesh are yet abundantly loved by such a God. This love should be enough to motivate us to live for Him, to come into His presence with a heart that is humble and repentant. We will never be turned away when we do because He is merciful (abundantly so), gracious, and longsuffering. May we come to Him with yielded hearts, ready to praise His name among the congregation.

Your Mind...
Thy word have I hid in mine heart... Psalm 119:11
Philippians 4:5-7 5. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. What we choose to memorize is ours forever, no one can ever take it away. To hid God's Word in our hearts ensures that we have access to His truth whenever we need it. Over the course of the next three months try to memorize the verses on the left. We will only be able to defeat our enemy by holding fast to the truths found in the Word of God about our God. In moments of temptation, the Holy Spirit will bring the verses we need to mind that will aid us in being victorious.

Be still, and know that I am God... Psalm 46:10
• don't look at your phone when you get up: we live in a society that is intertwined with our phones. For most of us it is the first thing we check after getting out of bed. Try drinking a glass of water first, give yourself ten minutes before looking at the screen. • go out for a coffee with a friend: people are our most valuable treasure meaning we should always take time to spend with a friend. Not only will it be nice to catch up with them but it always refreshes the soul. • do something nice for someone else: when you do something unexpected for someone like pay for their meal or let them go ahead of you in the check-out line not only does it give them a reason to smile, but it lifts your heart as well.

“Well…I pray with my child every night before
he goes to bed, and before I go to bed. We also pray as a family at most meal times.” However, we should be interceding for our children; going in and really praying FOR our children in the throne room of the Father Himself. Truth time: going to Him and interceding on behalf of my children should take higher priority in THIS mama’s heart. I have to remember and remind myself…God wants to give us things… but He does ask for one thing… TO THOSE WHO ASK HIM What is it that Jesus says that God requires of us? Check out Matthew Chapter 7. God loves your children. He wants good things for them! Jesus, sitting on a hillside in Jerusa-
lem, described prayer as simply asking our Father. He compares our relationship to God to that of a child asking his earthly father for bread. “what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? TO THEM THAT ASK HIM” (Matthew 7:9-11). WOW! Those last five words are a doozy! To those who ask Him. Will you ask God for a miracle in your child? HE’S WORTHY OF PRAISE When Jesus gave His example for prayer, it started with praise “Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done…” so I started each prayer with a praise related to an aspect of God that is relatable to each prayer item.

Roots and wings are two things my husband and I have always strived to give our children. Roots of course, in the Lord Jesus Christ. Wings, as the song says, to soar as eagles. This has never been an easy task, but anything worth doing never is. I can't think of anything in the world more important than the souls of our children. The Lord revealed to me very early on, that my children were my mission field. Therefore, I knew that I had to pour every ounce of my being into them. They needed me. They needed me to listen to them, to laugh with them, and to cry with them. They needed me on a daily basis reminding them how much Jesus loves them.
They needed to know that they were loved, and safe. They needed to know that Mom and Dad were their prayer warriors, and their biggest fans. I believe they needed to see that their home was safe, that Mom and Dad loved the Lord, and each other. We tried very hard to show them what marriage can be. Believe me; we failed more times than I care to admit. Yet, we kept going. I believe a strong marriage gives our kids security. As our kids have grown, it has been a constant learning curve. We are still learning what it means to have adult children. I can honestly say that it is better than I ever imagined it could be. Our children have always been our best friends, (with proper perspective
Fall 2021 | Sit still my daughter 85 of parenting too) but that relationship has just grown stronger and stronger. Every day I stand amazed at the godly young adults they have become. I truly rejoice in watching them grow and mature in the Lord. We are still in the early stages of this new phase of life. There are a few things that we have learned and are still learning.
learn.
Our children need to be allowed to fly. We have to trust that the years of prayer and training will pay off.
Like I said before, we are still in the beginning stages of this phase. So far, it's fabulous! I look forward to what the future holds. Watching my kids become adults, spouses and parents is the most fulfilling thing ever. We're all in this together. It's a group effort that is a lot of give and take, and lives bathed in prayer!
They need our respect. They need my husband and I to treat them as adults, and respect their decisions. Even when we may not agree or understand. They need our prayers. I want my kids to know that we will never stop holding the line! We will forever be their prayer warriors. They need our council. We should always be there to listen, and give Biblical advice. They need to know that we will always have their back! No matter what. They will always have our support. I'm not going to say it's easy to go from direct authority to council. It can be hard to let go. It definitely has given us much to pray about. My greatest passion in life has been to become the best Wife and Mother I could possibly be. Now, God has added the role of "Oma". We have the most beautiful granddaughters! Now I'm studying about my new role. Learning what the scriptures have to say about this new phase. We truly never stop learning. God always has more for us, if we will be willing to
I know one thing for sure. You will never regret devoting all of yourself to your family. Outside of our salvation, our children and grandchildren are our greatest joy. Of course, that includes our wonderful daughter and sons in-loves!

My first Bible was a King James Version which I won
at a local church. The church was located in a small town and was painted white. It even had a steeple and church bell that sounded when service was about to start. When the pastor preached, his voice vibrated against the old wooden pews. One faithful Sunday morning, the pastor instructed everyone to look under their seat. There I found the prize, my first Bible. It was blue with red-edged pages and at eight years old, I was drawn to it like a moth to a flame.
My faith walk has been like a winding mountain road beginning with a strict Nazarene church upbringing to believing that fearing God was the only way to be a true Christian, to doomsday prophecy preaching, and finally leaving the church altogether to look elsewhere for meaning and purpose. It took a few decades to find my way back to the church and, more importantly, to the Truth and understanding of His love for us. Little did I know at the time, this journey would lead me right where He wanted me to be at this very moment. “And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.” Ephesians 3:19 Fast forward from that small town to the big city of Denver, Colorado. At one time I thought I would become a journalist. I even spent a short time at a college studying journalism. But I gave up writing to attend art school and pursue a career in graphic design. I earned my graphic design degree and honed my skills working at various printing and marketing

companies. I worked hard, learned everything I could, and tried my hand at freelancing and side hustles. Not all were of great success but looking back, I truly believe all the skills (and failures) I experienced were setting me up for what God intended for me. Back when blogging was new, I started my first blog to write about faith, family, and raising two daughters. The blog went through many incarnations before finally settling on havefaitheveryday.blog. “Have faith every day” is my mantra because we need to have faith. I found a new love for faith, leaving the old “fear God” teachings behind, and seeing the love of Jesus for the first time. I studied and learned about the Bible and started attending church again. My greatest cheerleader in life has been my mom, not to mention the biggest commenter on my blog. Thanks, Mom! She has always said I should write a book. She was planting seeds and over the years I developed books in my head, but none committed to paper. I am a planner by nature and He knows this–after all, He created me. I need the con-

I will take swim lessons first before jumping in to ensure I don’t drown! In 2020, the COVID19 pandemic hit the world hard. People lost their loved ones to an unknown virus, people were fearful, businesses closed, cities declared stay-at-home orders, my hours were cut at the office. Suddenly, I had a lot of free time on my hands and an overwhelming urge to create something that helped others see hope during this uncertain time.
jump in any of it without a plan to execute, but I did move pretty quickly on this God urge. God placed people in my life at that very moment to plant the seeds, to the point I asked out loud, more than once, “Seriously, you want me to do this now, God?” He may have smiled and said, “Finally, you are getting the hint!”
I researched ways to self-publish, wrote out a plan, set a deadline, started designing, set a budget, and I went to work. I didn’t focus on doing everything at once. I made plans for the first stage and worked on that first. I wrote, designed, and published two study journals in one month. The first entitled, “Faith Over I can’t explain this urge. I just sat down and did it. I call it a God Urge. You can call it divine inter- Anxiety: Journal Your Way to Relief of Your Anxiety and vention or a calling. God moved my heart to continue and I wrote, designed, and published another journal about gratitude two months later. I have started the book that was once kept only in my head. It is a process and I believe will be finished when it is time. Other products have been developed, all due to HIS planted seeds—I know this for certain. I couldn’t have done it without Him. “There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.” Proverbs 19:21 God has continued to plant seeds of creativity in my head. I have found myself focusing my goals on Him now. It’s not about me anymore. It’s about inspiring women to live out loud their best spiritual life. I want to provide tools to embrace the love of Christ, no longer shrouded in fear, and help them along their faith walk. I never attended Seminary, I am just a woman who has a heart for God. Everyone has spiritual gifts. Some are obvious, others not so much like, graphic design. If I can use that skill to encourage others, and that is what He wants, then that is what I will do. I enjoy hearing from women who have purchased my products and the story of how it has inspired them in some way to grow richer in their faith. It’s what has moved me on this journey. My name will never be in lights. I don’t aspire to sign a lucrative book deal, but I do have a heart for helping others in a way that brings joy and glory to our Heavenly Father. I will keep gathering the seeds as long as he is planting them. The University of Boston established seven ways to self-care: 1. Start eating healthier. 2. Work out regularly. 3. Reduce stress. 4. Prioritize and schedule your time better. 5. Relax. 6. Practice “mindfulness.” 7. Be good to yourself. After reading these? What are your thoughts? How can you apply these thoughts to scripture? What is right? What is wrong? It would be a good idea if we pondered some of the things that our minds are infiltrated with while comparing to Biblical truth. Y’all ...did you know that Biblical self-care is a thing? It IS!! And not only is it ok, it is NECESSARY! And one might even say commanded. Philippians 4:4-8 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.
Fall 2021 | Sit still my daughter 101
102 Sit still my daughter | Fall 2021 Rejoice means to be glad, exceedingly, to be well, thrive. This sounds like I Peter 3:10. “love life and see good days.” God wants us to LOVE life free from worry, stress, anxiety, and alllllll the drama in this world. He prepared a path with directions for us to live this life, but just like I get to decide to take a shower or not, I GET to choose the path to love life. Biblical self-care begins by choosing to die to my own flesh and choose to be Spirit enabled. It is truly a moment by moment decision. Now let’s get to the “practicals”. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Phil 4:5 Moderation means seeming, suitable, equitable, fair, mild, gentle. We live in a dog eat dog world. Everyone is out to prove that he or she can DO IT and do it better. We are encompassed by constant temptations that scream YOU MUST DO MORE,
harder, better, faster, less cost, and the like. This mentality transfers to the girl in the mirror quite easily if I am not consistently practicing Biblical self-care. Moderation is typically used when we refer to food or weight loss. But God says moderation should be known to ALL MEN! This means He called us to live a balanced, Holy life in ALL AREAS OF OUR LIFE. Breathe a sigh of relief right here girls! Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. Phil 4:6 Be Careful: to be anxious, troubled, to seek to promote one’s interests, caring or providing for. If I am completely transparent. This is me! Change my name to “Martha” in Luke

I am the only one that keeps it together.” Friend, I lived the first 40 years of my life in worry and fear about not being good enough, failing flat on my face, always the last pick for the team. This worry drove me to extreme work ethic and production in a performance driven carnal place of spirituality. I have done some incredibly awesome things, but at the expense of those I love dearly. God has a way of bringing us to a place of nothingness so that HE can be EVERYTHING! One thing I have learned on my journey is just because I CAN do something, doesn’t always mean that I SHOULD do something. I must be busy doing the RIGHT things. I find this direction when I dwell in constant communion with God by keeping a thankful heart consistent in prayer and supplication. God’s way will always have you in quietness and rest in your heart. Paul in prison and Stephen when he was stoned are good examples though there are many more. If you are not experiencing these things it is

This peace keeps our hearts with her daughter trying on the shoe. “I’ll make it and minds. This peace is the driving force of Biblical fit.” I must confess I have had this mentality more self-care. It keeps me, and as I Peter 5:10 says, makes than once in my life. It has just been the last couple “you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.” of years that God has been teaching me so diligently in this area. God allows things in our life that force us to move out of our comfort zone. Without the discomfort, we would likely get complacent with that girl in the mirror. God tells us that “one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” One thing is needful….JESUS! Getting your nails done, wearing make-up, shopping, eating, pedicures, girls night out, reading a book, drinking coffee….whatever you do…. These things are not wrong in their place. Just make sure when you are indulging in a restful break that Jesus goes before you. Spiritual self-care is purposefully dwelling with Jesus, before all other things, in the place of peace.

I believed God had called me to pack up my belongings and move to another state so I could serve in a particular ministry there. I knew it would be necessary for me to sell my home and I prayed that God would bring the right people and that I would get a particular amount that I needed. God in His goodness answered, the house sold after being on the market less than a week for the price I asked! Caroline Fike
Sometimes God answers through delay. I needed to meet with a particular salesperson to settle up accounts. I didn't have all the necessary funds which meant I would have to pay some on a credit card. God allowed that person to be out of the office meaning I could not meet with them until the following week. During this delay God provided what I needed to pay off my debt in cash! His timing is always best even when we don't see it right away.

In many ways, this story starts with my parents! As
newlyweds (and born-again Christians), they began attending a Baptist church and became committed to living for the Lord. As my brothers and I were born, they took us to church, taught us about God, and set a godly example for all three of us. When I was a baby, my parents joined a new Baptist church plant in the area and four years later my dad became the assistant pastor. (P.S. it was at this same church where I would meet my husband Adam 18 years later!) Being born into a Christian home, going to church, and being the daughter of a pastor did NOT make me a Christian. I soon began to realize my own personal need of salvation. Hearing the Gospel at church and at home (and also seeing some of my friends trust Christ as their Savior) I began asking my mom if I could get saved too. I was five years old at the time and my mom wanted to make sure I was truly ready. So, she waited a little bit… and I kept asking! Finally, one Sunday afternoon, after asking my mom again, she took me up to my bedroom and there on my bed explained God’s simple plan of salvation. I realized that I was a sinner and needed Jesus to save me – so I prayed and accepted Jesus Christ into my heart and life! I still remember the excitement of sharing with others that I had finally gotten saved. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:13

A couple years later, at the age of seven, my dad baptized me at our church. I do not believe that Baptism is necessary for salvation, but I do believe it is the next step of obedience as a Christian! In some ways, I wish my Baptism would have happened closer to the date I got saved, but it took me awhile to work up the courage. “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized…” Acts 2:41 As a young girl (and during my early teen years) I began to struggle with doubts about my salvation. Maybe it was because I got saved at a young age (and my recollection of that day is a bit fuzzy) or maybe it was because I’m a naturally worrisome and anxious person. Whatever the reason, Satan was really after my heart and mind in this area. I remember lying awake at night, worrying that the rapture would happen and my whole family would be taken without me! Every time I heard a message on Hell or the rapture, I would wonder deep down inside, "am I truly saved? Am I really on my way to Heaven? What if…?" And on and on the questions and worries would go. My mom was amazing at reassuring me and helping me work through this struggle. At one time I prayed again with my mom for reassurance of my salvation,
but unfortunately, I continued to worry and doubt. Sometime during my teen years, I finally had enough with the doubts and questions. There were also a couple of books and one Scripture verse in particular that helped me gain victory in this area… but the main thing that made all the difference? I realized I had a choice. I realized that I could continue to doubt and question my salvation, OR I could CHOOSE to take God at His Word and believe that my eternal future was safe in His hands (and had been since the day I trusted Him!). “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” John 10:28 Another verse that really helped me was 1 John 5:13 (which is written to those who are already believers)… “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” 1 John 5:13 God wants us to know with full assurance that

we are saved and on our way to Heaven! It was never His plan for believers to doubt their salvation. I believe the devil uses fear and doubts about our salvation to cripple us as Christians and hinder our service for the Lord. The above verses, as well as making the choice to take God at His Word, made such a big difference for me. I knew I had already confessed my sins and placed my trust in Christ, so there was nothing left for me to do. The solution to the problem was realizing that my Heavenly Father was (and still is!) keeping my soul safe in His hands. This is not to say I’ve never once doubted my salvation since. However, every time the ugly face of doubt and fear begins to creep into my heart and mind, I just remember what Christ has done for me, and what God has promised in His Word! There’s an eternal home in Heaven waiting for me! And trust me, my friend, there is nothing like knowing with absolute certainty that you are saved and on your way to Heaven! I no longer need to live in fear of death, or Hell, or the rapture, but can live my life in peace with full assurance of my salvation.
“For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” ~ROMANS 3:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” ~ROMANS 6:23 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” ~ROMANS 5:8 “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” ~ROMANS 10:9-10

TIPS AND TOOLS FOR YOUR
quiet time
Are you new to studying the Bible or maybe a bit intimidated? Well, this is for you! Here are 8 easy steps to start enjoying God’s word and building a real relationship with Him.
HOLY BIBLE
open your heart and mind to the scripture you are about to read. Invite the Holy Spirit in during this time.
Try this: “Dear Lord, I pray you will provide clarity and wisdom and open our hearts during this Bible study. Come close as we read your Word. Let the Holy Spirit guide us in truth and light. Amen.”
2 Read Read the text slowly, paying close attention to wording and symbols. Slowing down helps us notice phrases or symbols that may have been missed otherwise. Don’t rely on your own understanding: If you read something you don’t understand, it’s okay to stop and research. Use a trusted website to gain more understanding. EnduringWord.com is a good place to start for commentary on scripture.
3 Think about context It’s all about the context! Not knowing the context allows room for misunderstanding.
Questions to ask: Who was the writer talking too? What was going on during this period in history? Consider cultural context. Is the text referring to what was or wasn’t culturally acceptable at the time? Note the literary context, i.e. words, phrases, or chapters before the text that are being repeated. HOLY BIBLE
4 Observe & highlight Observe symbols such as, numbers, cultural references, names, places, allegories, and metaphors. Take special note of these things that appear over and over or have special importance to guidance or commands. It’s okay to write in your Bible. Highlighting ideas: A Bible color-coding system* is a great way to highlight important subjects in the Bible. Or, if you prefer, use a notebook or Bible study journal to take notes.
5 Interpret & cross-reference Pay attention to cross-reference verses that relate back to the text before it. For instance, can the New Testament scripture relate back to Old Testament? This is key to interpreting as well.
Cross-reference tip: Can the verse be searched in other books of the Bible to speak to the meaning more clearly? If you cannot find related text, then your understanding may be flawed.
6 Ask questions It is absolutely okay to ask questions about what is
written, or what you have heard said about scripture. The Bible is full of people who asked questions. It is especially important to ask questions about false teachings. A good question to ask is: Does this statement or belief line up Biblically? Can you back it up with related reference text? If not, question its validity.
HOLY BIBLE
1 Pray Start your Bible quiet time in prayer. Pray to
7 Reflect Spend time after Bible study to reflect on the amazing story of God. The Bible as a whole is the “greatest story ever told”. Allow Him to meet you where you are. Dive deeper: As you go about your day or week, jot down your thoughts, or questions you may have. You may find there are questions that need further investigation. And that is okay too.
8 Apply Now that you have studied scripture what are you going to
do with what you have learned? No one ever said having a relationship with God would be easy. Asking hard questions: How will you live today in response to what you have studied? Are there areas in your life you need to change in order to follow Christ fully? Remember we are all sinners. Continually to strive to grow in Christ is the goal.
