Our current project to end hunger in Vacas, Bolivia.

PRESIDENT DIR. OF COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING DESIGN AND PRODUCTION CHIEF EDITOR & WRITER ASSIGNMENT PHOTOGRAPHER

Kevin Prine Andrew Betts Josh Shipley Sarah Boyd Wayne Rowe

OUR APPROACH Since 1979, Outreach International has been working with the world's most marginalized people to create solutions to help end world poverty. We are currently working in 11 impoverished countries, reaching hundreds of thousands with our mission to create a long-term change. We call this long-term change "Sustainable Good." At Outreach International, we believe giving a gift without educating a community to use it, repair it or cultivate it, is no gift at all; it's a quick fix to a problem that will continually resurface. And we don't want to create shortterm solutions for world poverty, we want to change it forever. By giving impoverished communities the tools they need to maintain and continue their own success, we can change their lives for generations to come. is quoted as saying, "We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop." This is a lovely sentiment, except that an isolated, single drop in the ocean sure doesn't seem like much. However, using Outreach International as a platform for this analogy, we can take it one step further. Imagine how that single drop transforms itself again and again, traveling thousands of miles as part of a whale, becoming a snowflake caught on the tongue, emerging as rain that nourishes a farmer's corn, or becoming part of a drink offered to a child dying

transformative nature of our work, gifts to Outreach International continue to create positive ripples of change long after the check is written. If I've learned anything from my visits to our communities, it's that each culture reflects the hope that comes from an understanding of the possibilities of transformation. They are families working together to build schools, brick by brick; mothers working relentlessly to find clean water and adequate food; and children taking care of one another because they are an embodiment of love. The human spirit, infused in these communities, never gives up.

I hope you find the stories in this edition of our magazine as inspirational as we do. Every picture you see was taken by an Outreach staff member, and every plant, animal and person in those photos reveal the impact of our work together. I sincerely hope you feel a personal connection to the wonderful things you've accomplished in partnership with the people who truly need it. We couldn't have done any of this without your support. Every drop. Sincerely, Dr. Kevin W. Prine President & CEO

YOUR SUPPORT HAS CHANGED THE LIVES OF 142 FAMILIES in Kuljing, India, living in poverty. Thank you for your kind-hearted generosity. With your help, and the support of two foundation grants, the people of Kuljing received 22 water buffalo. And with this new-found source for milk, they began to experience a more nutrient-rich diet. For the first time, mothers were able to provide their children with milk proteins, giving them more energy to grow and stay healthy. With more calcium, protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, phosphorus, magnesium and antioxidants than regular cow's milk, water buffalo's milk is a key element to helping children grow up healthy in India.

And your work didn't stop there. With this new level of nutrition, the children of Kuljing have had far more energy than ever before. They are drinking milk everyday and doing much better in school. Each family has turned a profit from the water buffalo, many of them doubling their income. Kuljing is a village located in Odisha—the poorest state in India. In this small community of 142 households, the average worker earns only Rs. 70 (or $1.48) per day. (Rs. are a form of Indian currency known as "rupees.") Padam, a father of five children who was making a mere Rs. 20 (38 cents) per day, struggled to find food for he and his family. "Because I can't afford to buy rice, I will go into the jungle and dig up some roots to eat. Sometimes

we will take tamarind seeds, grind them down and eat these," explained Padam. "The income from a buffalo will be Rs. 140 ($2.64) per day, so you can see how much difference that makes in our lives." Padam explains that in an area where disease is common, he and the other community members worry for the health of their children. "Sometimes people become very ill and they die," he said.

Magadhi, a mother of three, insists that the water buffalo have made a lifealtering change for her family, too. They used to eat just one meal of rice per day, and now eat two meals, including vegetables. Each of Magadhi's children drink a glass of nutrient-rich milk on a daily basis, improving their schooling and giving them more energy throughout the day.

THANKS TO PADAM'S WATER BUFFALO, HE IS NOW MAKING 7 TIMES HIS ORIGINAL INCOME. When asked if his own children ever get sick, Padam said, "They sometimes become ill and the only medicine I can give them is from the trees [herbal]. But I can't afford to take them to the doctor." After enduring a constant struggle, Padam and the other community members now have 22 water buffalo in the village. Padam is making seven times the yearly income he once was. The local economy has drastically benefited from the animals, adding an extra Rs. 23,725 ($527.22) a year, per water buffalo. As a result, the village is experiencing better living conditions, better education and better nutrition.

According to Kushal, Magadhi's husband, caring for a water buffalo can be difficult at times. To maximize the quality of the milk, they must move it around to the best places to graze and take care of it when it's sick. But the family seems to enjoy these responsibilities. They explain that the benefits far outweigh the difficulties and maintenance, and are proud to have doubled their income since the water buffalo entered their lives. Now, Magadhi's family has acquired a calf, too. They're looking forward to selling it for money, which means they'll be able to afford medicines when their children need it. In Kuljing, 142 families are living better than ever before, and they're continuing to move forward. Thanks to people like you, as well as support from two foundation grants, these 142 families lives have been changed forever.

Magadhi smiles cheerfully with the water buffalo that helped double her families salary.

"I live with my mother,

two brothers and two sisters," said Levy, a shy 12-year-old boy from Malemkeba, Zambia. He sat quietly with his mother in their simply-made mud house. Levy's father, a man who is paralyzed from the waist down, cleans freshly-picked vegetables for a living—a job that can be done while sitting down. "He usually lives out at a farm," Levy explained. Dedicated to his loving, yet wearied family, Levy has always been eager to help out. "I used to sell nuts and vegetables on the streets," Levy said. "We needed all the money we could get." And with a nearby road crowded with children selling produce, he didn't appear to be alone.

Malemkeba was deemed to be one of the most poverty-stricken areas in the northern part of Zambia. And before Outreach International's help, very few children in the area were able to receive a formal education. In order to survive, many of them had to help their parents work in the farms or sell goods in the streets. "It was too expensive to pay for our children to go to school," explained Levy's mother, Esiah. "But with the help of Outreach International, we now have our own school. We call it Oasis Community School."

NEARLY 500 ORPHANED AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN NOW ATTEND THE COMMUNITY SCHOOL. Because of the less-than-favorable conditions surrounding the Malemkeba area, nearly 500 orphaned and vulnerable children now attend the community school. Although the Oasis School is currently held in a community church, the parents and children involved are planning to build their own brick school house in the near future.

and embark on a true labor of love and hope. The kids attending the Oasis Community School are extremely proud to call it their own. They're passing their exams and achieving dreams that so many previous generations were unable to attain. "I get really high grades," Levy announces excitedly. "I know that if I can complete my studies, I will have a much better life. Not just for me, but for my whole family."

GROW BABY GROW A RADICAL SOLUTION IN BOLIVIA

6

outreach-international.org

The communities near Vacas, Bolivia, are in dire need of nutritional assistance. In these impoverished areas struggling to survive, Outreach International has integrated a pretty radical concept:

We're building vegetable gardens for 81 families experiencing extreme hunger. Admittedly, this is not a typical project to come from a nonprofit organization. No, you generally hear about a food drive or a fund for the cause. But we don't proclaim to be typical. And the efforts from these various organizations always end in the same way: Supplies run out. At Outreach International, we don't just want to fight for the world's current state of hunger, we want to eliminate it completely. So we choose to do things a little differently—we choose to fight for sustainability. And if we can think progressively enough to perpetuate these long-term fixes, we can take hunger to a new level.

Adelmo proudly shows off his families' gardening progress.

will succeed? This isn't our first rodeo— we've already successfully completed a similar project in the neighboring community of Sapilica. And in this community, village members were not only able to produce a variety of food for themselves, they also produced a surplus. In order to sustain growth in the Winter months, we taught them to build greenhouses so they can continue growing vegetables year around. And as

At a cost of $69 per garden, you can help these families dig their way out of poverty. Our goal is to raise a total of $5,589. With $909 raised so far, we're 16 percent of the way there. This drive only lasts until the end of March, so donate now to help us raise the remaining $4,680. No donation is too small. Check out our website to get involved: outreach-international.org/gardens

Our goal is to raise a total of $5,589. With $909 raised so far, we're 16 percent of the way there. Donate now to help us raise the remaining $4,680. Giving community members the opportunity to continuously grow vegetables not only allows them to eat more often and more nutritiously, it also allows them the opportunity to increase their income by selling larger quantities of produce in the market. Pretty radical, indeed. In Vacas, Bolivia, we're putting this method to work. But how do we know it

a result, their children are improving in school and feeling stronger, and families are getting the nutrition they need. The families in Vacas, Bolivia, aren't looking for handouts; they need our help in order to help themselves. We have the ability to restore hope and livelihood in this poverty-stricken area. We can be the solution they've been looking for.
