IN THEIR OWN WORDS Letters From Empowered Friends

As the president, beginning a letter with that fact sounds like bragging, even to me. And yet, if you know the culture at Outreach, you also know that every donor, employee, and board member co-creates this place where we want to work, this extraordinary organization we hope changes the world. However, there are no better examples of changing the world than our partners, who are pulling themselves from extreme poverty. Consider the resilience they’ve shown during the past eighteen months, often persevering through hardships unimaginable to those of us born into prosperity, which I’m defining here as simply having access to clean water, a school, a toilet, and enough food to eat. You will see many incredible examples in this magazine of people working together to solve challenging problems, supporting one another, and creating new lives previously undreamt. For even more examples, be sure to visit our website, including our most recent annual report.

Recently, Outreach was again named one of the best places to work in the Kansas City metropolitan area, as measured by confidential, third-party-monitored employee surveys. As has been the case in previous appearances, we are the sole charity on that list.

TRIBUTES & MEMORIALS

At Outreach, we are all responsible for one another. We are all co-creators of the world in which we live. We are all changing the ordinary into the extraordinary.

BREAKING NEW GROUND IN

POSTCARDS FROM THE FIELD

Nepal Greetings from Milan and Rishab in Nepal! After being challenged by COVID restrictions for so long, we were finally cleared to move forward! Once we completed our extensive area selection process, we gathered 40 people in Badhikel, 39 of whom were women! We learned about the population, demographics, education, infrastructure, and so much more. Now comes the “Groundbreaking Stage” of our process, where we build relationships, discuss issues, and start to brainstorm solutions!

FUN IN THE

Philippines On this beautiful day, we’re walking from one inaugural ceremony to another, celebrating several water pumps we’ve installed. This great accomplishment has put smiles behind our masks and a spring in our step!

YEARS OF HARD WORK PAY OFF IN

Nicaragua "This is the joy after many years of hard work from families in a community that never gave up to achieve their dreams of having clean water. I commend El Llanito for their perseverance. God bless your leaders, for your stubbornness in achieving it. Well done, team!" — Bayardo (Country Coordinator, Nicaragua)

PROSPERITY GROWING IN

Bolivia

Leaders from three separate communities here in Bolivia came together with a simple, powerful plan: requesting LOTS of plants, practicing responsible cultivation, and then documenting the results with data and photos. These plants — which are tailored to the colder weather of the region — will be a sustainable, efficient source of food and income for the more than 600 members of our communities. This is the kind of straightforward seed of an idea that’ll sprout into something special.

Haiti FILLS OUR HEARTS WITH HOPE "Dearest Friends — I am different from what I was when I started attending school. I could not read or write. But now, thanks to this school and its impact on my life, I can read, write, and much more. My favorite subject is French grammar. The most striking moment in my school experience was when for the first time I had the average 8 (the highest grade you can get on the state exams). I hope to continue to do well in my studies because in ten years, I want to become a nurse.” — Joasil (age 13, student, Haiti)

The Spores of Success

Then they got hands-on experience, putting their newfound skills to use. They gathered and processed materials, combined ingredients, and assembled their first mushroom fruiting bags.

I n late 2019, local leaders in the Philippines submitted a proposal to the nation’s Department of Trade and Industry to fund a new business venture for women in San Isidro. This government agency offers a “One Town, One Product” program, or OTOP, which provides capital for the start up of small-scale enterprises.

The next step in the process was to construct a growing house to create the proper conditions for an abundant harvest.

The OTOP program offers financial support for projects that are rooted in each community’s local resources and culture. This regional focus is proven to be effective because it provides pride of place. As these women succeed in their endeavors, they’ll become known in area markets as reliable local sources for high-quality products. For San Isidro, it’s mushrooms. Growers have an abundance of rice hulls and sawdust from the surrounding landscape, both of which are necessary for growing mushrooms in this way. And even more important than that, they have the spirit of entrepreneurship that drives them to succeed.

Capable Women Empowered Thirty women participated in the training program at the time of its launch in 2020. That number would have been much higher had there not been limits set because of the pandemic. But even in those challenging days, nothing could quell the excitement or stop the progress of these enterprising women. They gathered together and, over time, learned the entire process from local experts.

6

OUTREACH-INTERNATIONAL.ORG

The Engines of Their Own Prosperity Over time, their harvest will grow, their success will grow, and the number of women who participate will grow. Their reputation as a source for good mushrooms will spread to area markets. And most important, their pride, their sense of accomplishment, and their income also will grow. Because of their new ability to self-advocate to their government and the organized learning process, all guided by Outreach facilitators, they have become the catalyst for their own success, achieved by their drive to make their lives better.

PEOPLE EMPOWERED

Letters From Friends Around the World They learn for themselves, advocate for themselves, succeed for themselves. Here, they speak for themselves.

Solar Water System — Nandabadi Recorded by Sambit (documentor for our program partner team in India), Story Told by Ale (community member)

Hello, I am Ale from Nandabadi Village in India. I am a 62-year-old woman living with my husband.

Hard Work Pays Off By Kelvin (Human Development Facilitator on our program partner team in Malawi, Africa)

Generally, in Ofesi community, most of the people thought farming was just the actual cultivation, such as hoeing, planting, and harvesting of field crops. In the past, only a few individuals could raise animals just for fun, fame, and because their forefathers used to do so. That was until Khama Lidyetsa (a local community-based organization) in Ofesi implemented the project of goat raising. This project has changed the mentality of many. Just within seven months of goat project implementation, members have benefited from 26 bags of manure, which have symbiotically contributed to the high production of different field crops such as maize, soya beans, etc. Within the same period, 14 goats have given birth to 14 kids (baby goats). Most of the members have seen the reality and true meaning of raising animals. “Meeeee! Meeeee!” is now the amazing sound that welcomes visitors at Khama Lidyetsa. Besides these benefits within the short period, this December members are planning to disburse kids to additional beneficiaries. Before the implementation of the goat project, neighbors from other villages would say, “Tiaonera angazikwanise kuweta mbuzi,” meaning “we will see if they can manage to raise goats.”

In Nandabadi, there were no tube wells or solar water system. All the village people were dependent upon the river water for their drinking and bathing purposes, but the river is 1 km away from the village and also it is very difficult to access water in rainy season and summer season. In the year 2010, one tube well was installed by the government, but it was not enough to provide sufficient water for the village and we had to wait in queues for filling drinking water. This situation was very difficult for me as well as other elderly people of the village. Due to old age I was not able to pull the tube well handle and pour water. The village people and my neighbors were also busy in their personal work and they could not help me in fetching water. Due to this difficulty, sometimes my husband and I were using only two pots of water for two to three days. In the year 2015, Outreach’s program partner team in India started working in my community. All 56 households participated in the Outreach Process. The village people identified representatives for mobilization to different resources agencies; I was among them. We also formed a water committee through the help of the Human Development Facilitator. After the formation of a committee, we mobilized with different resource agencies, like Gram Panchayat, the Block Office, and the Rural Water Supply & Service Office, for a tube well and solar water system. By the continuous follow-up action, the Gram Panchayat Office granted one tube well and solar water pump system for Nandabadi. Now we are having sufficient water to fulfill our requirements and are accessing water easily through the solar water system. I am very happy to access the solar water system. For an old lady like me it is a blessing. So I would like to give thanks to Outreach for helping and supporting us.

Group members were not shaken by these discouraging words because they knew the positive part of it, and truly their desire of addressing the issue of insufficient alternative sources of income is being fulfilled day by day. This has led the group to be known even to their neighboring communities. The is the Outreach process at its best — imparting knowledge and skills to members, and changing lives for the better. "The group name, Khama Lidyetsa, means “Hard work pays off,” and indeed it has.

Interns | Spring and Summer Over the spring and summer of this year, we had the absolute pleasure of teaming up with six Outreach Interns! These fabulous young folks joined us from all over the U.S. — Zooming in for weekly meetings, working tirelessly on big projects, and helping Outreach climb to new heights! Special shoutouts to our new Outreach family members Nathan, Hunter, Ben, Sarah, Rachael, and Jenna!

Supporter Spotlight We’re so often humbled by the generosity and

selflessness of our donors. They give so much to help people all around the world. Yes, they give dollars, but they also give time and effort, and in some amazing ways. Here are just a few of the many who deserve special recognition.

Engineers Without Borders

Meet Ron.

The Cadman Family

Ron had a “bucket list” goal of cycling across the U.S., and in the spring and summer of 2021 he made it happen. After a year like 2020, he decided it was time to get out there and take on an adventure! And, as with so many activities in Ron’s life, he didn’t do it just for himself. He turned his journey into a fundraiser for Outreach. From May to August, Ron rode from Utah to Virginia. He kept people updated on his progress using social media and inspired a steady stream of donations from fans who were rooting him on along the way. Ron’s journey is complete, but his efforts to raise funds for our work around the world continue. As of late September, he’s raised $3,325 of his $5,000 goal. And that number can keep climbing! You can visit Ron’s fundraising webpage at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Ron-Edwards. You can read Ron’s story in his own words, and you can still show your support. Even a small donation will help push Ron’s goal to the finish line! Ron has our sincerest thanks and our deepest admiration. He’s the kind of person who makes the world a better place. 10

OUTREACH-INTERNATIONAL.ORG

Starting on June 12, four bicyclers from the Cadman family set out on a journey from Mobile, Alabama, to Toronto, Canada. They rode the incredible route of the Underground Railroad. Even more amazing, this was their FOURTH cycle ride to raise money and awareness for the mission of Outreach. Our friends on the UC Berkeley Engineers Without Borders team combined their brilliant ingenuity with selfless generosity. They provided the structural integrity for a load-sharing fundraiser to support communities in Nicaragua. These brainiac super-supporters hosted a virtual fundraising event featuring special guests, musical performances, and a raffle. Their incredible efforts raised $7,450 in just one event. We owe a huge “thank you” to Pat Coyle, the Engineers Without Borders San Francisco Professional Chapter, and the UC Berkeley El Llanito Water Supply Project Team for their awesome ingenuity and amazing results.

Doris and Bob have visited several Outreach field sites in various countries, so they’ve witnessed firsthand the amazing work being accomplished by

our program partners around the world. Inspired by the experience, Doris has been a volunteer representative and primary contact for the Community of Christ congregations in Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah. This year, they rode with their daughter, son-in-law, and grandson, who raised funds for a university scholarship. Needless to say, philanthropy runs deep in the Cadman family.
