Microloans in Cambodia Results Prove the Program Works

Our team in Cambodia is facilitating some amazing successes with a loan project. Thirty-five participants applied for a loan of $100 each by submitting a business plan. Upon approval, the repayment schedule is six months. The effort of creating business plans and completing proposals is an amazing learning process all by itself. And then the organization had to open a bank account so each participant could manage their money themselves. This is a tremendous goal to achieve, as some had never before had a bank account of any kind.

With the Community Loan Project, the members plan to implement income-generating activities such as rice farming, growing vegetables, and raising chickens, pigs, and ducks.

The business and financial skills being harnessed will drive their success, and the pride of accomplishment felt through individual achievement is the best incentive to keep up the good work.

The goal of facilitating community-led development is to bring people to a level of experience, organization, and empowerment where they have everything they need to independently continue the work they’ve started, and move forward with confidence to address their own needs and solve their own issues for generations to come.

Every member of our international staff has already changed the world through their dedication and brilliance. And they’ll do it again tomorrow.

There’s no easy way to do the job of an Outreach Facilitator. Communities are more than neighbors, and establishing trust among individuals who are accustomed to facing challenges alone is essential to building a sturdy framework for their shared success.

Outreach facilitators’ devotion to empowering the communities they serve is deeper than scheduling meetings, moderating discussions, encouraging teams, and advising local leaders during community-led projects.

Our facilitators and community members are an important part of each other’s lives, and the motivation to reach their respective goals goes both ways. Achieving meaningful, transformative community change requires both practitioners and participants to be animated by tenacity and love, in equal measure. A Guide on the Path Out of Poverty

Knowledge, skills, and attitude. These are essential elements of effective leadership, and central areas of focus in our leadership training courses. Our partners start by conducting a needs assessment to tailor the training to each community. By putting extra focus on individual abilities that need to be fortified, these new leaders are placed in the best position to guide their communities through their unique poverty-related issues.

In Zambia this past summer, forty members graduated from a leadership training course. Now, they’re directing their communities to organize, prioritize, and complete development projects. Over time they’ll work with less and less guidance from us, and eventually be able to work in total independence. This is our ultimate goal because we know we’ve done our job when we’re no longer needed.
