T HE SUSTA I NAB L E G I FTS C ATALOG Your Presents, Their Future Hello, we’re Outreach International. We facilitate community-led development worldwide. For 40 years, we’ve worked alongside communities all over the globe to address issues related to chronic poverty. In 171 field–program locations, spanning 10 countries, our team of 103 international staff members cultivates new mindsets and new milestones to mark the path toward personal empowerment and sustainable development. Think of this as a catalog full of process, not products. Every item you see pictured on the following pages represents an outcome of our work — a goal reached, a dream realized, another empowered step forward for a community whose people are working together to lift themselves into a more prosperous, hopeful future. For example, you’ll see tree saplings listed on page 13. A few months ago, after significant organizing, planning, and preparation, neighbors in Nicaragua planted 600 fruit trees and 800 ornamental trees throughout their community in the space of three days. Those trees will provide benefits that grow more robust and reliable for generations to come. Elsewhere this year, women from DR Congo organized an adult literacy course (listed on page 27) and celebrated their graduation by signing their names on a chalkboard — for the first time in their lives.

O U R P RO M IS E Do we dole out unnecessary goats to families just because someone ordered them from this catalog? Nope, never. That’d make more problems for everyone, including the goats. We honor your generosity in the most ethical, effective way possible by furnishing resources only after a community has demonstrated its developmental readiness. Empowering our partners means equipping them with the right tools at the right time, to ensure that the needs being met address the causes of chronic poverty, not the effects of it. Every single item in this catalog has recently, is currently, or will soon be realized in our Outreach communities.

100% = 100% We’re here to help our partners, not to hype ourselves. Honoring our community members, supporters, and mission equally means doing things the hard way once, instead of the easy way over and over again. Thanks to the generosity of a donor covering all of our overhead, 100% of every gift to Outreach goes entirely and directly to support our work in communities worldwide and facilitates empowered, sustainable, meaningful outcomes that change lives for generations. You can learn more about every aspect of our work on our brand-new website, outreach-international.org.

Families, like water buffalo, don’t come with instruction manuals. Empowering both to grow into the most effective, beneficial entities they can be requires patience, compassion, love, and a whole lot of good advice from those with more experience. When a family in an Outreach-affiliated community in India was searching for a way to increase the income from their farm, they first found a guide — Mona, an Outreach facilitator (pictured, center), to lead them. Then, together, they reached a water buffalo– shaped conclusion. As part of Outreach’s community-led development process, Mona had spent a lot of time in the community, getting to know families and earning their trust. Following the (surprisingly involved) process of acquiring a water buffalo, the real work began. Beyond the mechanics of piloting a beast of burden with its own agenda through fields and roads, ensuring working animals stay healthy and contented requires proper care and regular veterinary checkups. With Mona’s facilitation and partnership, the household introduced a new four-legged friend into its ranks, added more income to its bottom line, and welcomed Mona as an honored addition to their family.

WATER

TH E H IG H -WAT ER M A R K The addition of a water well in a community is as life-changing as it is life-saving. Without a well nearby, community members spend hours each day walking long distances, waiting in long lines, carrying heavy containers, and boiling every drop instead of working to earn a living or staying focused on resolving the other needs in their lives. A reliable source of clean water eliminates the specter of water-borne disease and returns trust to simple acts like drinking, cooking, and bathing. Add a well, and watch the rising tide lift all boats — more time every day to earn income, do household chores, raise families, and relax at the end of it all with a well-earned glass of refreshment.

Outreach facilitates community-led development worldwide through the formation and support of community-based organizations, or CBOs. When neighbors gather for the first time to voice their concerns during initial Outreach-facilitated community meetings, they’re a crowd. As their poverty-related issues are organized into prioritized lists, local leaders naturally emerge, and the crowd becomes a group. As their most-pressing issues become projects with phases and steps and goals, they become a team. With each new milestone reached as they contend with challenges and work toward completion, they become a force. Once a CBO is established, it becomes the nucleus of all the projects that follow, and the catalyst for the changes that result. For instance, a CBO might manage finances and record-keeping for short-term, lowinterest rice loan programs to provide families dependent on farming-related income with enough food to stay healthy and fed in the months between harvests. Or a CBO might contact a government agency to secure funding or materials to help their community access new school supplies, dig a well, or plant a backyard garden. They can do anything. Whatever goodness goes on in an Outreach-affiliated community is because of the character and confidence of the community itself, thriving within a framework for success devised by Outreach and applied by community leaders. The bonds formed through community partnership emerge, organically and authentically, as the most meaningful, sustainable element of our work.

Doing our best means knowing the most, and the more people who know the particulars, the more we can do together. Equip and inform local leaders with basic values, knowledge, and skills in problem-solving, organizational development, and management. MIREILLE FACILITATOR, MENTOR | DR CONGO This year has been a time of challenges for the Congo team. I am training three new facilitators and also work as a facilitator for an Outreach-affiliated Congolese community. The combination of these two roles allowed me to expand my skills, push my limits, and enhance my knowledge in the interest of providing the maximum benefit to my teammates. Thus, I pledge to educate myself for the benefit of all by relying on others when needed, because, as the saying goes, ‘No one has the monopoly of knowledge.’

ALVIN FACILITATOR | PHILIPPINES I am inspired when people in Outreach-affiliated communities speak on the changes they have experienced. They are able to tell others in different communities how they achieved all they have, and share the challenges they conquered to succeed. When I see the changes of the community leaders — going from being silent to being agitated about empowering positive change — it makes me feel that I did my job well. It also inspires me when my colleagues succeed. It makes me think, ‘Those are not just successes for them, but a success for all of us,’ and it drives me to achieve even more.

MOISES FACILITATOR | BOLIVIA I am proud because with facilitation through Outreach, people challenge their limitations and decide to address their problems and take an interest in improving their lives, as well as the lives of their family. It is not easy or simple to be an Outreach facilitator — in applying our methodology, I make people talk about their problems and share their concerns; we spend time analyzing the issues they raise and decide how to solve them, while at the same time ensuring each person is responsible for their own development. Overcoming all the challenges along the way is how communities reach meaningful outcomes, and how I can become more effective in my work.

NOT WORDS B LU RDEEDS B ON STORY Now that you’ve seen some of the

elements that go into the empowered success of our community partners in the items listed throughout this catalog, here’s what it looks like when they’re applied to community-led development! Here’s where theory meets practice, and practice makes perfect!

H E ARTS & M I N DS How many days has it been since your last happy-cry? Even if you don’t keep track, this will reset your counter to zero: In February, members of one of the newest Outreach-facilitated communities in DR Congo prioritized adult literacy as the first issue they’d tackle together. A mere six months later, the Level 1 literacy class they established welcomed its first round of graduates! The ten women taking the class learned the alphabet, mastered entry-level reading skills, and even got a head-start on some written tasks to prepare for their Level 2 classes. Graduation ceremonies included honors for all involved, as the students took turns writing their names on the chalkboard in front of the other students — something they couldn’t do before taking the literacy class. We’re certain that this milestone is only the first chapter in their story, so you might want to keep your tissue box somewhere close.
