OUR APPROACH Since 1979, Outreach International has been working with the world's most marginalized people to create solutions to help end world poverty. We have worked in 15 impoverished countries around the world, reaching hundreds of thousands with our mission to create permanent change. At Outreach International, we believe giving a gift without educating a community to use it, repair it, or cultivate it, is no gift at all; it's a quick fix to a problem that will continually resurface. And we don't want to create short-term solutions for world poverty—we want to change it forever. By giving impoverished communities the tools they need to maintain and continue their own success, we can change their lives for generations to come. FROM THE PRESIDENT

A book I have on my office shelf, Thomas Friedman's The World is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century, has always been interesting to me from a business perspective. Recently, I've reconsidered this quotation he uses from an interview with a research team for Microsoft: "Remember, in China when you are one in a million—there are 1,300 other people just like you." When Friedman wrote the book (published in 2005), he was speaking primarily about the effects on the developed world of a more connected and "flat" planet, particularly in the areas of business, culture, and education. When he cited this, he was illustrating the power of those rare individuals and how many there are in China. What

if we were to consider his words from a different angle—specifically from the perspective of an organization like Outreach International? There are approximately 1 billion children living in poverty. Imagine a world where these children have an opportunity for basic education, adequate nutrition, basic health service, and a community that encourages hard work to achieve a better life. If we consider the quote above, this means at least another thousand children— from each generation—would become our Mozarts; our Mother Teresas; our Marie Curies; our Nelson Mandelas. What if the cure for cancer was destined to come from one of these extraordinary individuals, but we kept missing it? Our communities already recognize the value of this idea. When I traveled to Zambia and visited our communities, one village seemed particularly remarkable. When prioritizing the things they wanted to accomplish, they placed a grade school ahead of clean

water, sanitation, and developing a safe food supply. Obviously, we are working together with them on these other items, but their first choice was the education and safety of their youngest children. As a donor, you collaborate with our indigenous staff who work side-byside with the people pulling themselves out of deep poverty. Likely, you do this because you have a charitable heart, see the need to make a difference, and want to make the world a better place by partnering with a great organization. But as we create a better world for others, we just might be creating a better world for ourselves.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kevin W. Prine President & CEO

Knowing how important their education is, children in Zambia stay engaged in school.

A NEW SCHOOL YEAR IS IN SESSION and children all over the world are continuing to learn and grow. It is the parents and teachers who give students the opportunity to expand their knowledge. But not all children are able to get the same educational experience. Every year, the United States spends more than $500 billion dollars on public elementary and secondary education; and arguably, it's not always enough. Approximately 97 percent of all teachers have taken money out of their own pockets for expenses not covered, and parents spend hundreds on school supplies. But we continue to sacrafice— because education matters. It is, quite literally, the price we pay for success. And it's what determines our children's futures and shapes their careers. Luckily for the children in La Prusia, Nicaragua, their parents and teachers know just how important education is, too. And they're pushing the limits to make sure their children receive the best schooling they can get. In 1997, the Immaculate Community School was established in La Prusia. Unfortunately, there has been no upkeep or maintenance to improve its quality since its construction. In fact, the building has deteriorated and even become a safety hazard for its students. "The roof was rusted; there were holes everywhere," said Professor Alvaro, a long-time teacher in the community. "During the rainy season, classrooms were constantly flooding." Text books and other classroom materials, which are hard to come by in La Prusia, were ruined in bad weather because the building could no

longer shield against the elements. "When it rains, sometimes less than 10 children come to class because it's too dangerous," Alvaro said. "One day, I had to rush my student, Marta, to the health center after part of the roof fell on her." "Sometimes when the building flooded, we'd have to put five different classes of children all in one classroom to avoid the damage. And it is so overcrowded," Alvaro said. A $500 billion education budget is a luxury few have. Not a cent has been put into the Immaculate Community School since it was built in 1997. But this year, dedicated parents and teachers decided to change all that. An Outreach staff member in Nicaragua is helping Alvaro and community parents put their heads together to come up with a solution. After months of dedication, they were able to access the materials they needed for a new roof. Today, the children of La Prusia have a safe learning environment. Because of your support, Outreach International, along with other partners, have helped

them replace damaged books and school supplies. School attendance and student performances are at an all-time high, and children are now getting the educational experience they need to succeed. Next, the community is gearing up to paint the ceiling to prevent future damage.

"School attendance and student performances are at an all-time high, and children are now getting the educational experience they need to succeed." Alvaro couldn't be happier. "When we all work together, we accomplish big things," he said. "And most importantly, the children continue to learn."

Alvaro prepares lessons for his students.

"One day, I had to rush my student, Marta, to the health center after part of the roof fell on her."

KNOW THYSELF TO KNOW OTHERS Outreach International's NEW LOOK. 6

YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED A FEW CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE OF OUTREACH MAGAZINE. THAT'S BECAUSE WE'VE GIVEN OUR BRAND A FACELIFT. LET US FILL YOU IN!

Why the change?

We want to be as direct as possible with our mission, and that means our brand has to cut through the clutter and get right to the point. We are a humanitarian organization down to our very core. Everything we do focuses on people; and more importantly, on the individual. We want our brand, like our field staff, to work subtly in the background, taking little credit for achievements. It is our supporters and the people living in poverty who make our work possible.

Why the color? The color orange represents determination, encouragement and creativity—the very same attributes our staff and impoverished families display in the field every day.

How much did it cost? We didn't pay an agency to make these changes. We wanted your gifts and contributions to continue going where they're needed most, so we did all of the work right here at headquarters. And lucky for us, we know our organization pretty well. Our marketing efforts come with deep insight and reflection, allowing our supporters to see exactly where their money is spent and the impact they're making around the world.

What does this mean for me as a supporter? You play a critical role in helping us change lives. We can't achieve our mission alone; you are the loudest voice and strongest advocate for our cause. Without you, we would not exist. Our brand symbolizes not only our field staff and the impoverished families we serve, but also YOU. It is representative of all of us, and it reminds us that we're one connected community.

Still have questions? Please contact our brand identity manager: j.shipley@outreachmail.org

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A VOLUNTEER

They would mo Houston home headquarters in M and John wanted their lives to Outr of fighting povert

For 17 years, Eileen Humphrey dedicated her life to meeting and empowering new people around the globe.

8

outreach-international.org

Creating a team of volunteers that would span through all regions of the United States, she and her husband, John, generated a movement they truly believed in—a movement that spread a surprisingly attainable goal: ending world poverty. You might say Eileen has always had a passion for helping others. In her professional life, she taught special education and first grade. And for the last 12 years of her career, she worked with high school dropouts, helping them get their GED certificates and go on to find employment. Eileen is an idealist, to say the least. But it was her activism that would allow her to impact hundreds of lives worldwide.

One day in 1990, after years of working with youth, something unfortunate and unexpected happened. Eileen was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. It was a new obstacle she and John never thought they'd have to face, forcing them to take a new perspective on their lives and their careers. They had both been working full-time jobs since they married and raised five children, leaving them little one-on-one time with each other. Soon after the diagnosis, she and John decided to retire and start a new life—one that would allow them to spend more time together. But little did they know then that a new adventure was in store for them. For years, they had been Outreach International supporters. But one day, after talking to Director of Field Operations Dennis Labayen and former Executive Director Jack Knapp, they decided to do something a little crazy: They would move from their Houston home to Outreach headquarters in Missouri. Eileen and John wanted to rededicate their lives to Outreach's mission of fighting poverty. It came as a burst of spontaneity, and was a bit startling at first, but they decided to disregard hesitation and jump right in. "After we made the decision, things went so smoothly," Eileen said. "Our house sold right away, and we found a great place to build a house in Missouri. We took it as a sign." Once they got there, they weren't sure what exactly they'd be doing for Outreach, but they were ready to start a new chapter. After years of leading busy lives, they were excited to do something together— something they both believed in. Not more than a couple months after their move, Eileen and John helped found Outreach's volunteer network. Building a base of volunteers all over the United States, they were able to broaden

ove from their to Outreach Missouri. Eileen d to rededicate reach's mission ty.

Thank you, Eileen

the voice of Outreach. And soon, much to their excitement, hundreds of people across the country became advocates for Outreach's mission. Volunteers would meet every year in locations throughout the United States to talk about their successes and failures, and what they could do to improve and reach more people. "These are people who believe so strongly in Outreach International. We all knew in our hearts that with enough support, we could make a big impact," said Eileen. "John always said not being paid employees was a real strength for us because people would know we really believed in the mission," she continued. "They would know that it really mattered." Looking back, she considers the volunteer network to be a truly tremendous experience. "We met wonderful, beautiful people all over," she said. "And it was a beautiful time for John and me. We didn't get to spend a lot of time together before we retired. So in some ways, I got to know him again; and I was able to really enjoy his company." Eileen feels blessed to have been able to spend 17 years with her husband, working toward a goal they believed in so strongly. But unfortunately, years later, they found out John had cancer. Eileen spent his last days by his side. She knows the time they spent together for Outreach will live on forever. They impacted hundreds, and

helped change the fates of thousands living in poverty. Luckily for John and Eileen, they got to see their work in action before John passed away. On a site visit in the Philippines, Eileen said they met amazing, hard-working people eager to step out of poverty. The families supported each other and worked together; they were really creating a different world for themselves. She and John were genuinely impressed, and it made everything worthwhile. But there was one moment in the Philippines that stuck with her for all these years. "A mother was mourning the loss of her son. She wasn't able to afford the medical treatment that could have saved him," Eileen said. "She needed our help. And she said something I think all Outreach supporters should keep in mind. Before we left, she turned to me and said, 'Don't forget us. Don't forget us when you go.'"

"Don't forget us. Don't forget us when you go."
