Get your heart racing and adrenalin pumping as you hit the slopes for an action packed hardcore adventure. With a massive natural sand dune just outside Cunnamulla, you can take one of our sand boards or sleds for a thrilling ride down the sandy slopes. It’s a tough climb all the way to the top but well worth the effort as you speed your way back to the bottom. The ride will give you such a rush, you’ll want to turn around and do it all over again. Based on skill, this sport is similar to snowboarding – you can wind your way to the bottom or simply go full speed in a straight line. Access the river approx 100 m from Allan Tannock Weir at the boat ramp. Paddle up stream and on the left you will see Pine Ridge a property that has been in the Keane family for many years.

Point B is really only a point of interest along the journey from A to C as there is no easy public access to the river between the Weir and the Darby Land Bridge. The scenery from section B to C changes dramatically along with the bird, wildlife and vegetation. This section of your paddle is extremely tranquil, you will pass close to large trees in the water and see where the pelicans nest.

KAYAK TRIP C TO D

The beautiful grassed area beside the Darby Land Bridge is a great spot to stop for smoko or lunch on a long paddle or launch your kayak to start a trip up the river. This area is also home to hundreds of white Corellas. As you paddle up the river you will see many shy black tail wallabies and kangaroos on the left hand side of the river, which is the golf club.

On the right you will see what used to be called the “Red Hills” – a favorite swimming spot for local kids who would swing off large trees into the water.

As you approach D “The Old Bridge” you will notice the wetlands area, home to cranes

As you travel you will enter the “Lost Forest”, an area where trees once grew on what used to be the riverbank or islands but are now covered with water.

From D the river changes dramatically. Prior to the weir being erected this section of the river would often go dry in places.

The further upstream you travel, the more varieties of birds, ducks, eagles, falcons, budgies,

parrots, rainbow bee-eaters you will see. The paddle is made more exciting as you navigate your way between the trees. The gully or channel that goes off to the right is named “Nevs Gully” and a trip along there is a must. You can spend hours paddling all around this area up to Bandy Paddock however you would need to paddle back to either point D or C for vehicle access to load the kayaks at the completion of your paddle.

Vehicle maintenance

Ensure your vehicle is mechanically sound before setting out. Carry spare belts and hoses. Have your tyres checked. Load your vehicle sensibly, don’t overload roof racks or trailers, pack fuel and water containers securely. In the event of a breakdown or if you become lost ALWAYS STAY WITH YOUR VEHICLE.

While Cunnamulla has a fuel depot and a number of service stations, at the time of printing this guide auto gas was not available in the town.

Animals

Native animals and stock present hazards to motorists. It is wise to match your speed to visibility and take extra care on bends and crests. For maximum safety, travel should be restricted to daylight hours. Be extra cautious at sunrise and sunset.

The Yapunyah tree, prized by beekeepers, is often found in this country. Toward the western part of the district, stoney ridge type country emerges as the rainfall diminishes somewhat.

Cunnamulla, Eulo AND Yowah are situated largely in the mulga belt of South-West Queensland characterised by open grassland/floodplains tending to thickets of low woodland, primarily mulga. On red soils – mulga, box and sandalwood predominate, whilst on the heavier grey/brown clay soils – semi open grassland with gidyea scrub prevail.

All these grasses are good for stock.

Birds in the Cunnamulla District Many species of birds can be seen in the area from regular sightings of Galahs and Little Corellas, to your Red-Capped Robins and variegated Fairy-Wrens for those with a little more time and patience. A good time to see many varieties is at feeding/watering time, so around sunrise and sunset is ideal for enthusiasts. The Allan Tannock Weir is a good vantage point to view the many water birds to be seen in the area. The Sandhills and caravan park are other locations in town where you will see a variety of birds.

Emu The emu is the tallest native bird in Australia measuring from 1.6 meters to 1.9 meters in height. It weighs between 30 - 45 kilograms. The emu’s speed is almost legendary in Australian folklore. The emu’s legs are long and powerful, enabling it to run fast in a zig zag pattern or kick swiftly in defense. Their legs seem to bend back to front and each foot has three forward facing toes and one hind toe. The emu’s body is covered with a shaggy grey-brown coat of feathers. The chicks (young emus) have a soft, downey striped coat. The male emu is the incubator of the eggs, which are large and green. He seldom leaves the eggs until they have all hatched which takes 8-10 weeks. The father remains the primary caregiver until the chicks leave the safety of the family, usually after 6 months. The emu stands proudly next to the kangaroo on the Australian coat of arms.

Kangaroo

The Kangaroo is a unique marsupial that belongs to a small group of animals called macropods. Most macropods have hind legs larger than their forelimbs. Being a marsupial the kangaroo and its relative the wallaby have a forward opening pouch, unlike koalas and wombats, whose pouch opens to the rear. Kangaroos are abundant in the

outback, sometimes almost reaching plague proportions. Hence, certain numbers are culled for their meat and skin.

The Brolga

The Brolga is a large grey crane, with a featherless red head and grey crown. The Brolga stands up to 1.3 metres tall and has a wingspan of 2.4 metres. Unlike the Emu the Brolga can fly and is famous for its dancing displays during courtship. Brolgas usually breed from July through to March or September through to June in the northern areas. It is normal for the Brolga to lay two eggs in a nest made from plant stems, grasses and sticks.

Goanna

The goanna is a species of monitor lizard. They grow up to 160 cm long with a flat body and strong legs and claws. They have a very long neck and tail. The goanna tongue is similar to that of a snake that slithers in and out. When threatened, the goanna may rear up or run fast on their hind legs. Goannas are very adept at climbing trees, swimming and fast running. They live in woodland or grassland areas and survive on a diet of smaller lizards and reptiles, snake eggs, insects and small mammals.

Brolga

Little Corella The Little Corella is a common sight along the Warrego River and further west. They are mostly white, but have a blue eye-ring with a pale pink patch between the eye and beak. Sulphur yellow underwings can be seen in flight. They measure between 35-39 cm making them smaller than their sulphur-crested cockatoo cousins. Sometimes numbering into the hundreds, Little Corellas feed in large noisy flocks often together with galahs. They mainly feed on grains and grass seeds found on the ground. Little Corellas are thought to pair for life, typically decades. They nest in hollow trees and usually incubate 2 to 4 eggs for about 25 days. The chicks hatch naked and are totally dependant on their parents. Many are domesticated and make good pets, but are still best enjoyed in their natural habitat, flying freely for all to enjoy.

local industry Wool From Cunnamulla’s inception, wool has been the primary industry of the area. In the early years, many properties in the region were producing thousands of bales each year, with up to three families living on-site along with many staff. Today however it is a different story as graziers contend with many modern day challenges including industry de-regulation, selling of the stockpile, a crash in wool prices, the government sheep shooting programme and crippling droughts. In December 2006 most producers in the area were down to approximately 30-40% of their original flock numbers. Even with an immediate break in the drought, it would take 2-

3 years for many producers to rebuild their numbers without purchasing stock. Many have made a shift to include cattle or meat sheep in an effort to diversify their enterprise and spread their risk.

Meat Sheep Meat sheep are becoming more and more popular within the South West in light of the devastating impact of the drought, and the decline of the wool industry. Some producers are switching to a dual-purpose meat/wool animal and others are going all the way to a pure meat sheep. The future for lamb on the domestic and export markets is promising, producers are also looking at converting to organic certification to be able to receive up to a $30 premium for their finished lamb compared to the conventional animal.

Cattle Cattle breeds in the area include Herefords, Shorthorn, Black & Red Angus, Santa Gertrudis, Droughtmasters and Brahmans plus

Shearers

Shearer’s remain an integral part of the pastoral industry in this area. The conditions of the first shearers were rough, shearing manually with blades in sheds constructed of bark and canvas. 60 – 80 sheep shorn per day was considered a good days work. The man who could shear more would be known as the “ringer” of the shed. Today, a shearer normally shears around 140 to 300 sheep a day. Teams of shearers travel from property to property during the season. A flock of 5000 probably requires a 4-stand shed with shearing machines and equipment for four shearers. local industry many crossbreds, including Simmental and Charolais. Newer breeds of cattle including Brahmans, Droughtmasters and Santa Gertrudis have become more predominant in the area due to their suitability to the hard drought conditions. Goats From time to time producers in the area have farmed goats, however it has not developed to a significant level. Most producers round up feral goats each year with numbers varying from 100 to 5000 head. The price has been reasonably consistent paying from 80 cents to $1 live weight per kg. Cotton Cotton has been grown very successfully on two of the local

wool grows about 7 to 10 cm in that time. Charles McKenzie initially came to Cunnamulla as a shearer and soon developed his own contracting business. Charles and his MHR Shearing have revolutionised shearing taking it from traditional sheds to the paddock with his cutting edge, portable shearing and crutching truck. The truck allows for Charles and his team to crutch the sheep in the paddock eliminating much of the effort required for mustering, reducing stress on the sheep during times of drought and ultimately, saving valuable time and money for the producer.

Most Friday’s you are able to go on a guided tour of a sheep property where you can see shearing, wool handling, preparation, bailing and weighing along with a sheep dog demonstration and talk on their Dohne operation. Table Grapes Table grapes have become a permanent and sustainable industry in the Shire over the past decade, producing thousands of boxes of table grapes for the local and export markets in December and January every year. The Cunnamulla grape industry has proved to be one of the best quality and most reliable fruit crops in the state due to the sustainable water supply from the Allan Tannock Weir and weather conditions in the region.

Asparagus Asparagus is grown on one of the local grape farms as a second income source. It is such a durable and robust plant. It is harvested during the winter months and trucked via refrigerated vans to local markets in the city

The wildlife harvested is for human consumption for growing markets in Russia and Europe and the average price paid is .85 cents to $1 per kg. Like many other rural industries, this industry is largely affected by seasonal conditions and drought.

Organic Farming Organic wheat is grown in the district by a long term, highly motivated and innovative grazing and farming family. Organic status was sought to achieve premium prices and penetrate niche markets. The third crop will be sown in 2009 and when harvested will be freighted directly to an organic chicken farmer. In addition to the wheat the same family is producing organic lamb, which earns premium prices in the market as many consumers demand clean and green produce. If you’d like to sample the organic lamb, it’s roasted and served up at the campfire dinner held nightly at Out the Back Australia (see page 29 of this Guide for details).

Commercial Wildlife Harvesters

Regional Tourism

In Cunnamulla there are 30 registered licensed commercial wildlife harvesters. Queensland is split into three regions and Cunnamulla is in part of the central region, which is the largest area with the highest quotas for kangaroos and wallabies.

By working closely with local businesses, tourism operators, clubs and property owners, Out the Back Australia has created world-class tour products, characterised by unique, genuine bush experiences specific to the area. Beekeeping in the Warrego District

Migratory beekeeping has been practised in the area since the 1960s and is a growth industry in Cunnamulla, and westwards to Eulo, Thargomindah and northwest to Quilpie. Beekeepers favour the Yapunyah, a type of box tree, which can yield nectar prolifically for several months. The beehives are generally moved back south or east after the Yapunyah tree has finished flowering (October). Local beekeepers then take advantage of the Poplar Box (or round leaf box), River Red Gum and Coolibah during the summer months. Bloodwood and Lignum (a type of swamp plant) may be useful if weather conditions have been reasonable. As Australians are not large consumers of honey, most honey produced in Australia is exported to the Middle East and Great Britain for the food and cosmetic industries. Eddie Mills was born in 1941. On his first day of school in 1946 his parents Estelle Page & Edward Albert Mills purchased a retailing business in Cunnamulla and named it E. Mills & Sons. In 1954, Eddie went

The Cunnamulla Bowling Club was formed in 1937 and until the mid 1940’s members made do with a tent for their Clubhouse. With increasing membership the double storied Clubhouse was built with a spiral staircase connecting the floors. The Bowls Club continued to grow and became a very stable club. In late 1957 the far South West Association was formed incorporating Charleville, Quilpie and Cunnamulla Bowls Clubs. A competition of the club champions of the three clubs was started consisting of singles, pairs and rinks and rotated between the three towns each year on the first or second week of September. This event is still competed today, in the first two weeks of July. The Easter Carnival was introduced and played on the same format and the Collaroy Cup was another competition created between the three clubs.

In the early sixties the Club House was expanded with downstairs incorporating a reception area and kitchen and the top floor extended to become the manager / greenkeeper’s flat. In 1981 the Club purchased a cold room and in 1983 it was installed in conjunction with the erection of the change room.

The club remains strong under current President Frank Coleman who is now serving his third term. With a calendar of events, plenty of competition and support from the community, the Cunnamulla Bowls Club will continue from strength to strength.

The name of the town is derived from an Aboriginal term meaning “long stretch of water” referring to the Warrego River, which passes through the town. was established soon after William Landsborough’s exploration of the district in 1858. Tinnenburra woolshed, completed in 1896 by James Tyson, was the largest in the world with 101 blade shearing stands. The Tyson properties carried 500,000 sheep and once stretched from Wyandra to beyond the NSW border on the western side of the Warrego River, covering approximately 10,000 square miles. After shearing, the wool was carted by teamsters to North Bourke, then by paddle steamer to the seaboard where it was shipped overseas for sale.

It was always the wish of Eddie’s mother Estelle to have all the family working together in the business and within twelve months Eddie was invited to buy into the partnership, which he did in 1958. Eddie has a passion for the business and has made it his life. From the beginning and still today the Mission Statement for E. Mills & Sons is “It is a pleasure to serve you” and that has always been Eddie’s attitude.

Making the decision to join IGA was one of the most successful plans and turning points for Eddie and the shop. IGA offered vision, structure and the support of people and systems that were committed, proven and worked. Eddie is an inspiration to his family and in 2006 was recognised by his peers for his contribution to the growth and development of the IGA brand and ideals and was inducted into the IGA Hall of Fame. This was not only a win for Eddie, Chris and their staff but for Cunnamulla as this prestigious award is run nationally through 1100 stores.

Mills & Sons IGA is the largest private employer in Cunnamulla and continues to grow each year breaking new boundaries. One of the first customers sixty years ago still deals with the business today. Eddie prides his success on his love and vision for his job, his family support, wonderful staff and supportive customers.

He opened a timber yard at the current location, with a small hardware store attached. The hardware store evolved over the years as a Mitre 10 in the 1980’s and in later years to a True Value Hardware Store as it currently is today. The store is still owned by the Thompson family and the helpful friendly staff of N.J.’s continue to serve the people of Cunnamulla and outer districts.

D.M. Thompson Donald Thompson commenced his electrical business in 1950 under a lean-to shelter erected off the side of his father’s hardware store in Cunnamulla, starting out as an electrical contractor. In the early days Donald’s transport was an “Indian” motorcycle with sidecar in which he would be seen carrying ladders and trade tools to the job. He later moved into Dowling’s Store Building in Jane Street (now a house) and in 1964 new larger premises were built at the present day location in John Street, allowing improved service and a large range of products to be offered to the community.

.J. Thompsons N Pty Ltd – True Value

In 1967 Donald Thompson Electrical joined Betta Stores, then Queensland’s largest electrical retail group of individually owned members. The business has evolved through the years, keeping abreast of the changes and advancements in the electrical industry.

N.J.’s has been a true hardware store with a history servicing the South West corner from around the late 1930’s. Norman James (N.J.) Thompson, the founder of the business came to Cunnamulla in the early 1930’s to rebuild Service Stores after a devastating fire. N.J. stayed on as a builder to rebuild Tatts Hotel and later the Club Hotel, as well as many other local buildings.

Over the past 67 years the business has successfully trained dozens of electrical apprentices of which many now have advanced careers further afield. The company is now managed by Scott Thompson (Son) a second generation electrician and is proudly supported by Ben Thompson (grandson), a third generation electrician as well as their experienced and capable staff. 3 Jack Tonkin Cabins & Caravan Park – Watson Street

Cunnamulla has a number of landmarks that have been dedicated to people past and present who have contributed to the growth and development of the region. These people are highly respected by the community and include:

The Jack Tonkin Caravan Park was named after a local resident of Cunnamulla who served in local government for forty-two years and as Shire Chairman from 1961 to 1985.

Allan Tannock Weir

The Allan Tannock Weir is located 5 km south of Cunnamulla on the Warrego River. It was completed in 1991 as a source of water for the surrounding landholders and to provide water for irrigation in and around Cunnamulla. Its capacity is 4770 megalitres. The name ‘Allan Tannock’ is derived from a prominent Cunnamulla local known foremost for his lifetime of work researching and documenting his knowledge on flood mitigation relative to the Warrego River. Mr Tannock, maintained a great interest in the river systems and was always willing to impart his knowledge until the time of his passing 22nd November 2008. Immediately below the weir is a natural river crossing still known to most as Keanes’ Crossing, where a road has been constructed to cross the Warrego River. Jubilee Park is located at the weir with a public toilet, car park, BBQ area, boat ramp and plenty of shady trees.

Over the years Cunnamulla has built three bridges across the Warrego River. The first bridge was built in a straight line from the end of the railway line and named “The Old Bridge” by locals. In 1939 “The Old Bridge” was abandoned after the completion of the “New Old Bridge” that was constructed in the location of the bridge today. This bridge was completely constructed of timber and served the district well for many years. On 15th February 1995 the new bridge named the “Darby Land Bridge” in honour of Darby Land who served in local government in Cunnamulla for 29 years with 15 of those years as Shire Chairman and Mayor. The “Darby Land Bridge” was constructed in the exact same alignment as the “New Old Bridge”. The old timber bridge was replaced because it was subject to flooding. The “Darby Land Bridge” is constructed of concrete and has a bike and walking path all the way across on one side and is built at approximately 11mtrs which corresponds with the height of the levy bank.

Buster Schmidt Jack Tonkin

Jack worked hard to ensure the town and its people prospered. The Caravan Park is approximately fifty years old and was originally operated by the local council. In 1973 Lyn and the late Barry Hammond took over the lease and today Lyn soldiers on and continues to offer quality service and a wealth of local knowledge to the thousands of travellers passing through including Slim Dusty and his wife Jan and their bands who stayed at the park many times over the years when playing in the area. The Jack Tonkin Caravan Park today provides fully serviced cottage style cabins, caravan, motorhome and camping sites and facilities including two large amenities blocks, laundry and BBQ areas.

4 Buster Schmidt Park Buster Schmidt Park is located at the Cunnamulla Gun Club and was officially opened on Sunday 12th May 2007 during the annual May Shoot and Masters Games Shoot. Buster and his wife Lorraine were unable to attend the ceremony however they were well represented by two generations of Schmidts including son Adrian, grandson Richard and son Owen all keen shooters and members of the club. Buster Schmidt, is a life member and former President, and has had continuous membership of

the club since 1938. The sign was provided and donated to the club by Bill Hickford from Victoria. Bill has enjoyed many great weekends at Cunnamulla Gun Club Shoots over the years, while enjoying the hospitality of the Schmidts at their family home and property Baroona.

Dave Webster Park is located at the Cunnamulla Gun Club and was also officially opened on Sunday 12th May 2007 during the annual May Shoot and Masters Games Shoot. Dave is a long standing founding member

Bob Poncho Park was established in 1991 as a permanent Memorial to the late Robert Lion Poncho who was born in Cunnamulla in 1901 and died in Cunnamulla in 1993 aged 92 years. The park is located on the corner of Jane and Stockyard Streets and boasts a beautiful rotunda, grassed area and lovely gardens.

Taking approximately two years to complete, the new Works Depot was opened by Mayor Ian Tonkin on behalf of the citizens of Paroo Shire Council on the 28th July 2006. Brendan’s wife Mrs Fay Abbott assisted in the ceremony by cutting the ribbon to the Works Depot/Store in recognition of her late husband Brendan and his pursuit of the project.

The late Brendan Abbott came to Cunnamulla as a mechanic and soon worked his way to Workshop Supervisor on the Paroo Shire Council. Brendan had a vision to design and build a modern, efficient and safe work facility suitable to house the wide array of equipment, storage, machinery and people that form the Paroo Shire Works Depot. 7 John Kerr Park Located on the corner of Louise and John Streets, this sporting arena was completed in 1951. The John Kerr Park gates were erected in honor of Mr John Kerr, who was a town Councillor for 30 years and Shire Chairman from 1924 – 1927 and 1933 – 1951. Mr Kerr is especially remembered for his generosity in distributing threepences to school children on Christmas break up day each year. Both Jack and his wife were known far and wide for their generosity over the years, helping many people from all walks of life.

Bob served in the Cunnamulla Town Band from a young boy and eventually became Band Master. Bob spent some years as a Telegram Messenger, Storeman and Slaughterman in Cunnamulla before going out to Thurulgoona Station with his wife where he was a cowboy and she was the cook. He also worked on the Council and then ran a Wood Depot in Cunnamulla with his son Bob Jnr.

9 AR Taylor Pavilion

Allan Roy Taylor was the first President of the Cunnamulla Show Society that was founded in 1955. Initially a block of land was offered to the committee however both AR and JC Taylor rejected it because the land was not centrally located in the town.

During the second World War Bob assisted by his wife Valma and Bandsmen met every train into and out of Cunnamulla taking Diggers away and returning them from War Service. Bob and his band attended every Anzac Day service from 1943 and Bob acted as Offical Bugler for every Armistice Day Ceremony as well as for the funerals of ex-service persons in Cunnamulla.

When the lands department eventually gave the town a suitable area to set up a Show Grounds, it was just a bare block and a very active committee drew up a plan of the show grounds and supervised its construction. The first building constructed was the (later named) AR Taylor Memorial Pavilion, which housed the handicraft and horticulture exhibits. The next

Oigle's Corner

“Oigle’s Corner” is located at the Cunnamulla Gun Club and is a tribute to the late “Oigle” Terry Coleman on behalf of his friends and fellow shooters.

Oigle’s premature passing in 2007, caused such sadness in the community that the Cunnamulla Gun Club dedicated a section of the bar in honour of this larger than life character. Now known as “Oigle’s Corner”, this section of the bar was “Oigle’s” favourite place to sit, enjoy a beer and watch the action on Trap 1. “Oigle” was such a happy personality and a pleasure to be around. Where ever he was, he brought lots of good times and laughter. He is sadly missed.

At the time of his death, AR Taylor’s son JC (Clayton) Taylor was Co President of the Cunnamulla Show Society. JC Taylor continued in the role for approximately another five years. 10 F W Thomas Horse Stalls Frank was the owner of FW Thomas men’s clothing store, which was located in Stockyard Street beside the current chemist. Frank was also a partner in Gemac the Holden dealership in John Street where J & L Industries now operates. Frank was President of the Cunnamulla Show Society for a number of years and was instrumental in progressing the Society during his tenure. Because of his achievements as President, the horse stalls at the Show Grounds were named in his honor. 11 Senior Citizens’ Hall – Emma Street The Senior Citizens’ Hall was originally the Methodist church and was opened in 1900. The site was donated by the first minister Rev. F. Greenwood and Mr. W. J. Smout. The Building Fund was raised purely from donations, and the Church was opened debt free. The building was sold to the Odd Fellows Lodge at the end of World War I. The Buffalo Lodge owned the hall prior to 1985. After a lot of fundraising and generous donations by local businesses, the building was purchased in 1985 by the Senior Citizens Club. On the right hand side of the front yard you will see a beautiful rose garden that is dedicated to the memory of Past President Florence “Flo” Anderson 1932 – 2003. INFORMATION GUIDE 2010/2011 45

Cunnamulla Gun Club Clay target shooting, has been a sport in Cunnamulla for nearly 80 years. Before traps and “Clay Pigeons” made their presence felt, live bird shooting was in vogue. About 1926, clay targets were introduced to Cunnamulla and shooting took place on the present site. During the big drought and depression of the late 20’s and early 30’s, shooting was abandoned until about 1934 or 35. Col Macdonald and the late Wally Scheiwe formed the Cunnamulla Gun Club, the basis of the present club was affiliated so members could get cartridges. George Bignell was President. Shooting took place on a sand hill on the town reserve, with only one lane and a trap. Each shooter shot his 5 or 10 targets straight, and bookmakers and side punters were an integral part of the process. During the war years the club was closed down, but Reg Barden being a keen shooter, paid all affiliation fees and kept the club open, obtaining clay birds and cartridges from Melbourne so the club could start shooting immediately when it was eventually formed again. It was renamed the Cunnamulla Diggers Gun Club. In 1951 the Council granted a special lease and the club was moved from the sand hill to its former site. Buster Schmidt, life member and former President, and Rolph Arthur, have had continuous membership since 1938. Dave Webster joined in 1938, and his membership was broken only by war service. Reg Barden, a foundation member was always a strong club supporter. The Cunnamulla Gun Club is one of the oldest gun clubs running in Queensland. 46 CUNNAMULLA, EULO AND YOWAH

Burrenbilla

Charlotte Plains originally an area of 385,280 acres, was taken up in the 1860’s. In 1905 there were 56,275 sheep shorn and it has been recorded that the highest number of sheep to have been pastured on the property at any one time was 104,000. Is it any wonder that number 1165 is stamped on one of the wool bales in the photo of 1914 as they wait for the bullock team to arrive.

Major Thomas Mitchell discovered the Warrego River in 1846, however, it was Kennedy in 1847 who followed the river down and found the superb country fronting the Warrego. He described it as equal to the best he had seen in Australia.

The Nagel family bought Charlotte Plains in 1925. Eighty plus years on, the descendants of “Bunny Nagel’’ still hold Charlotte Plains with an area of 70,000 acres. Boasting a 24 stand shearing shed, an artesian bore, bullockies hut, property cemetery and racetrack of bye gone days, Charlotte Plains is rich with history.

Aldville

Today’s downtown Cunnamulla, was originally “Cunnamulla Station”, settled in 1859 by Samuel Smith. His family sold it to a partnership in 1867, and in 1868 a reserve was created for the town of Cunnamulla. The first town blocks were sold in 1869. “Burrenbilla” was an outstation of “Cunnamulla Station”, situated nine miles down the Bourke Road, but in 1893 after a name change, “Burrenbilla” became the property name. It was moved to its present site in 1898 after a bore was established. When purchased by Carl Schmidt in 1913, “Burrenbilla” was 196,040 acres. It is still owned by younger members of the Schmidt family although much has been resumed. Many clay target shooters who have travelled to Cunnamulla have camped at “Burrenbilla”, probably not realising it is Cunnamulla’s oldest property.

Aldville came into being when country was resumed from Humeburn and parcels of land were balloted for in March 1925. An additional area was granted in about 1933. Family rationalisation and other purchases over the years have formed the present aggregation of 55,000 hectares. A predominately Mulga block, it has large areas of Gidgee, Coolibah and flooded Yapunyah with double frontages to both the Paroo River and Beechal Creek. Much of the property is watered from natural waterholes with the balance supplemented by dams and two artesian bores drilled in 1937 and 1954 respectively. Aldville is grazing country and historically the focus has been on wool production. Of late there has been a shift towards meat production of sheep and cattle.

eulo Eulo Eulo owes its existence to the fact that it is situated near a good waterhole on the eastern bank of the Paroo River and because it lies on the direct route of travel to the West. Where did the name, “Eulo”, come from? Stories vary. One theory is that it was named after a European woman whose name was pronounced “Eulo” although the spelling was different. Another theory links the name to Aboriginal origins. Some say it means a dry place/creek/river while others insist it means wet springs. The original township was built closer to the river but was moved to higher ground (its current location), after floods almost wiped out the entire town.

Eulo Heritage Trail The Eulo Queen The only remaining Hotel in Eulo is named after Isobel, a legendary character, shrouded in mystery and conjecture. Isobel is believed to have been born on Mauritius, Isle of France, in about 1850. She was an extremely cultured woman, who spoke French and German fluently, she was also a very shrewd business woman. Isobel married three times and

supposedly had a daughter who died at a young age. After the death of her first husband, Mr. McIntosh, she married Richard Robinson and established herself as a prominent resident of Eulo at the turn of the century. Mrs. Robinson, simply known locally as “Maggie”, was a colourful character, with a taste for good jewellery (including Yowah opals), and an authoritative presence, from which she earned her nickname. She acquired the Royal Mail Hotel in 1889, and the Empire Hotel by 1900, together with a butcher’s shop and store. Although she lost her licenses due to shady dealings and violations of the Liquor Act, she used employees as phoney licensees and continued to trade. In 1912 Isobel bought the Metropolitan Hotel. The Great War heralded the collapse of her empire with continued run-ins with the law and her two remaining hotels burning down. She also lost her third and most beloved husband, Herbert Gray, when he was killed in action. Isobel left Eulo in 1922, after attempting suicide, an alcoholic with a broken spirit. Sadly, Isobel McIntosh/ Robinson/Gray died in a mental home in Toowoomba in 1929 aged 79. Bullock Teams John Terrence Geppert, was the last bullock driver to operate in Eulo. He sold his bullock team of 22 in 1948. In 1936 they were paid a shilling per ton per mile to carry bales of wool from properties to the railway in

The Eulo Race Track was first built in the 1930’s. The final race meeting of the Paroo Race Club was held on the 12th October 1957, followed by a gala ball at the town hall.

The RFDS first commenced serving Eulo in 1980. The Flying Doctor is also available to the area in the case of emergencies. The local community holds regular fundraisers to assist with this invaluable service.

The Paroo River was discovered by the explorer, Dowling, in 1846 while surveying the region from N.S.W. Building of the bridge began in 1927 and was completed in 1928 under the supervision of Hornibrook.

Eulo Post Office

Cunnamulla. Eulo Sports Grounds The Eulo Sports Grounds were assigned when a lease for the property was given to the trustee of the Eulo Combined Churches Sports Committee in 1973. The first sports day was conducted at the grounds in 1977 and a plaque was erected near the horse yards built by Mick Schute. Air-Raid Shelters Tiny Eulo was chosen as a site for a safety shelter during WWII. There were two reasons for the decision. Firstly, Eulo lies in the direct flight path from Darwin to Melbourne and secondly because the town was a communication link used to wire information between major centres. The building of the shelter – made of heavy gauge corrugated steel curved over a trench – was a government project. The shelter is situated at the side of the Eulo Stores. When first built, the shelter could hold about fifty people standing up. Today, the rusty half-moon shape shelter could be mistaken for a dog

The Post Office was opened on the 16th September 1872. Beginning in 1870 a fortnightly mail run was established from Cunnamulla to Thargomindah, passing through Eulo. In 1871, it became a weekly service. By 1884 the mail service was running twice weekly. In 1878 fortnightly mail services operated between Eulo and Beechal by horse and a weekly service between Eulo and Hungerford. Telegraph extensions were built from Cunnamulla to Eulo, the work completed by 29 April 1881. The 4½ miles of line took just over four months to complete. Of the 2503 telegraph messages handled in 1883, only 83 were official, proof that even back then the locals loved a good gossip. A manual Telephone Exchange was opened at the Post Office in April 1921. In 1969 the total number of subscriptions had risen to 29. The Eulo Post Office closed in 1982 due to the introduction of automatic telephones. The Eulo Store then became a Post Office Agency. Eulo Date Farm Afghan Cameleers were responsible for introducing the date palm to Australia in the early 1800’s. Many date palms still survive around bores in the more arid areas of Australia. The Eulo Date Farm was first established near Eulo in the 1980s. For over two decades a number of

About 1100 pounds is in hand to cover the quoted cost of 1580 pounds. Money has been lent by various interested people of Eulo to cover the remainder. On Sunday 15th September, 1957, the Archbishop will dedicate the new church of St. Francis of Assisi, Eulo. The occasion will be the culmination of months of hard work and planning. Previously there has been no Anglican Church at Eulo. The building to be free at the time of its dedication. May 1958: At Eulo, the people are gradually adding to the interior appearance and furnishings of the church. May 1964: Eulo are 400 pounds in credit and were able to give 100 pounds to the Cunnamulla Building Fund and provide a carpet for the church. A Sunday school operates at this centre. Located 160 kms west of Cunnamulla (bitumen road all the way), the township of Yowah is Australia’s bestkept secret. It is home to ironstone matrix and boulders called Yowah Nuts, which are cracked or sliced to reveal the “kernel” – hopefully one of solid opal, Australia’s gemstone.

The Acacia Cambagei (the gidyea or gidgee) occurs naturally and is a good timber tree. Acacia Aneura (mulga) grows abundantly in this area and is an excellent source of fodder in dry seasons.

Fauna The kangaroo, emu and a large variety of lizards are native to the area. There is also huge variety of birds including Burkes Parrot and Halls Babbler. Enthusiasts travel from all over Australia to view these birds. Due to dams and watering areas built by graziers, the kangaroo population flourishes in the area. They have become a nuisance by invading paddocks and damaging fences. They are also dangerous for travellers as they feed alongside the road and move unpredictably when startled by vehicles.

Tours can be arranged for any size group including private vehicles, buses and fly-ins however all bookings must be made prior to arrival.  All catering requirements can arranged for any time of day, but bookings are essential.

The Eulo Polocrosse Club welcomes members and guests. A full adult membership is approx $300 per year (adjusted annually, including Affiliation Fees payable to the Queensland Polocrosse Association). Other categories include sub juniors, juniors, intermediates with casuals and trial players always welcomed.

Another good yielding honey tree is the Bimble Box (euc popilnea), which has glossy green, broad leaves. Other eucalypt trees are the Coolibah (euc coolabahs), River Red Gum (euc camadulensis) and Blood Wood (uuc terminalis).

Early miners have often missed such boulders, to the delight of visitors who benefit from “noodling” the old dumps. Some boulders have superbly intricate patterns without being opalised. Why not take a tour to the free fossicking area and search for your very own opals that you can take home with you.  Cutting and polishing services are available for your find.

In 1993 enrolments hit an all-time low, with only 4 students attending. The Department of Education threatened closure of the school unless numbers could be increased considerably – and those numbers maintained. The Eulo community rallied and a Student Hostel was built beside the school with accommodation provided for 20 students and a House Mother. This provided an opportunity for children from properties in the district to attend the local school.

The Yapunyah Tree (euc ochrophloia) is native to south-west Queensland. It grows to a height of 20m. The tree has weeping branches with a reddish trunk. The honey produced by this tree has a unique flavour.

A Provisional School was opened in Eulo in 1888. In 1909 it became a State School. Attendance for the first year was 28 pupils. It rose to 59 in 1913, then varied from anywhere between 22 and 46. It is difficult to find a reason for these changes.

The last lizard races were held in 2004.

Polocrosse is a combination of polo, lacrosse and netball. It is played on horseback, each rider using a cane stick, made up of a polo stick shaft to which is attached a squash racquet type head with a loose twisted-thread net, in which the ball is carried. To play you need a horse, helmet, riding equipment, polocrosse racquet, club saddlecloth and uniform.

At the side of the race track there is also the famous Destructo Monument which commemorates the death of the famous cockroach Destructo, who was accidentally trodden on after challenging and beating, the champion lizard.

Today the Eulo Hall is used by art and craft groups, for meetings and Flying Doctor Clinics.

Eulo Polocrosse Club

Take a tour of a real open cut opal mine and learn the intricacies of how the mine works.  Then back to Trafford & Val’s Opal Gallery for a display of cutting and polishing the gems. (Tourists should note that any opal found at this location is the property of the mine leasee and can only be taken by agreement of the leasee of that mine.) The Gallery features a range of cut and uncut opals for sale as well as souvenirs available as a token of your experience.

Prior to the races, suitable lizards were auctioned – the record being $1065 paid out by a syndicate in 1983. The World Record for the race is 2.5 seconds, set by “Herbie”, a Cunnamulla shingleback, in 1972. After the day of races all lizards were returned to the exact site from which they were found.

Opal is formed from a solution of silicon dioxide and water. As water seeps through sandstone, it picks up tiny particles of silica. Millions of years ago, the solution flowed into cracks and voids in sedimentary and volcanic areas of inland Australia and solidified when the climate changed after the last ice age. There are many kinds of opals including: • Black Opal – Characterised by a dark body tone, which causes brightness of colour, black opals are unmatched by lighter opals.

• White Opal – Also known as ‘milky opal’, white opal features light white body tones. • Boulder Opal – Forms on ironstone boulders. Because the opal is particularly thin, they are often cut leaving the ironstone on the back This means that boulder opal can be very dark and beautiful in colour and vary in shape and size, from as small as a pea, to as big as a family car. • Crystal Opal – Crystal Opals have a transparent or semi-transparent body with a dark or light tone. • Matrix opal – Matrix opal occurs as a network of veins or infilling of voids, between grains of the host rock and in the natural state, shows fine pinfire colour. Boulder opal matrix is another kind of matrix opal, found at Yowah, which in its natural state consists of brown ironstone with small deposits of opal interspersed.

• Yowah Nuts – Found in the mines at Yowah, Yowah Nuts are ironstone concretions resembling ‘nuts’ which contain precious opal in their centre. Upon cracking or slicing the Yowah Nut, the precious opal is revealed. It is interesting to note that no two opals are alike and each has a unique set of qualities, colours and patterns.

The History of Yowah Opal Fields Yowah opal fields were discovered in 1883. It is the oldest producing opal field in Australia.

The original mining leases and claims are still being mined today. In the early years, miners could only work the fields when there was rainfall. When the water ran out they had to leave. Nowadays there is an artesian bore to supply water. The town has grown to a population of approximately 120 during Summer and 450 residents during Winter. INFORMATION GUIDE 2010/2011 57

fishing on the warrego Fishing on the Warrego River The coffee-coloured water of the Warrego River provides some excellent angling opportunities. The fish that will try and elude your hook are primarily catfish, yellowbelly, Murray Cod, Silver Perch and spangled perch.

Eel Tailed Catfish

Conservation Status: Vulnerable Habitat: Lives and feeds largely on the bottom.  Solitary, although small individuals often form loose schools. Diet: Yabbies, shrimps, molluscs and other organisms from the bottom. Size, Take & Possession Limits: Min: 35cm Limit: 5 Combined limit of five for all species.

Golden Perch

Scientific Name: Macquaria ambigua Common Name: Yellowbelly Size: Commonly less than 5 kg but can grow up to 75 cm & 23 kg Conservation Status: Restricted.  Considered rare in much of its original range, although still present in large numbers in many locations. Habitat: Variety of environments, but most frequently occurs in warm, turbid, sluggish inland waters and associated backwaters and billabongs.  A tolerant fish, able to withstand water temperatures of 4 to 37°C,

and salinities up to 33,000 parts per million (almost that of sea-water). Diet: Carnivorous, eating mainly yabbies and shrimps, insects, molluscs and small fish.  Feeding behaviour varies, some individuals remain in shaded areas or amongst cover to take prey as it passes, whilst others move slowly over weed beds etc. to feed. Size, Take & Possession Limits: Min: 30cm Limit: 10

Murray Cod

Scientific Name: Maccullochella peelii peelii Common Names: Cod, Codfish, Murray Cod Size: Will reach at least 60 cm and 3 to 4 kg in the small streams. Murray Cod in larger waterways usually reach 90 to 100 cm and 15 to 20 kg, if not taken by anglers.  Occasionally recorded from 120 to 130 cm and 35 to 45 kg. A 28lb (14kg) Murray Cod was caught in the Warrego mid March 2007. The largest Murray Cod ever officially recorded was 183 cm, 113 kg (6 ft, 250 lbs). Conservation Status: Vulnerable, Listed under the Victorian Flora & Fauna Guarantee Act Threatened Species of National Significance, Listed under the Commonwealth Environmental Protection & Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act Habitat: Murray Cod are remarkable by any ecologist's standards in their

adaptability and the diversity of habitats they occupy.  Murray Cod habitat varies greatly, from quite small clear, rocky, upland streams with riffle and pool structure on the upper western slopes of the Great Dividing Range to large, meandering, slowflowing, often silty rivers in the alluvial lowland reaches of the Murray-Darling Basin.

Silver Perch

Murray Cod prefer deep holes with cover in the form of large rocks, fallen trees, stumps, clay banks and overhanging vegetation. Very territorial.

Habitat: Schools in large numbers sometimes seen near the surface.  In summer often congregates below rapids and weirs.  Prefers warmer sluggish waters with debris cover.

Diet: (Top Predator) Murray Cod have a varied diet of other fish, spiny freshwater crayfish, yabbies, shrimp, freshwater mussels, frogs, water fowl, small mammals, tortoises and other reptiles.  Virtually anything within its realm that moves and is small enough to fit in its cavernous mouth is considered fair game! Decline: The decline in Murray Cod numbers is due to multiple factors.  Contrary to popular belief, over fishing has played a massive role in the decline of Murray Cod.  Murray Cod were grotesquely over fished by commercial fishermen in the latter half of the nineteenth century.  The many dams and weirs, and the regulation of river flows, mean that rivers do not follow natural flow patterns anymore.  In particular, the spring floods that create the zooplankton-rich conditions, vital for strong survival and recruitment of Murray Cod larvae, have been curtailed or halted completely.  With no spring floods Murray Cod are simply unable to recruit numbers effectively (the overwhelming majority of cod larvae produced every year starve to death) and Murray Cod stocks have consequently crashed. Diet: Shrimps, yabbies and aquatic insects, believed to change to a mainly vegetarian diet in larger fish. Size, Take & Possession Limits: Min: 30cm Catch and release only in the Paroo and Warrego River basin.

any body of fresh water including rivers and other streams, lakes, dams and even some temporary waters.  Yabbies are active burrowers and are very hardy, able to withstand poor water quality and long periods of drought. If a particular watercourse dries up, yabbies burrow deep into the bottom until they reach moist soil, where they presumably become very quiet. The scientific name destructor refers to the Yabby's habit of burrowing into levy banks and dam walls where they can cause considerable damage. Diet: Detritus feeder and opportunistic carnivore especially of carrion. Angling: A very common childhood pastime is to catch yabbies with a piece of meat tied to a length of string.  Adults generally use nets of various designs, depending upon location and regulation in the particular area. In farm dams, yabbies are usually gathered using drag nets, and this can very quickly harvest a large number. Yabbies themselves, in the smaller sizes, make excellent bait for the larger native fish, being an important part of the diet of many species.

Yabby Scientific Name: Cheerax destructor Common Name: The name "Yabby" refers to any freshwater crayfish species in Australia. Size: To 70 mm carapace length, 160 mm total body length Conservation Status: Common/ Widespread Habitat: Capable of living in virtually

On the table: Yabbies are excellent eating.  They can be simply boiled for a few minutes in salted water or prepared in a variety of ways.  They have a very sweet meat and the claws of larger specimens are particularly succulent.  Compared to spiny freshwater crayfish, yabbies have much more meat for the size of the animal, although yabbies are much smaller than crays.  Live bait: The use of fish and crustaceans such as spangled perch, redclaw crayfish, shrimp and yabbies as bait (dead or alive) is prohibited outside their natural environment

or range. This is to prevent species from becoming established in foreign habitats and causing environmental damage. Currently two species can be used as live bait. They are: • S hrimp (Macrobrachium australiensis) found throughout Queensland and can be used as bait in all areas of the state. • Y abby (blueclaw crayfish) (Cherax destructor) found naturally  in the Murray-Darling, Lake Eyre and Bulloo-Bancannia Drainage Divisions, and some river basins in the East Coast Drainage Division. Yabbies can be used as bait only in these areas. Size, Take & Possession Limits: Size: No limits Limit: 100. Females carrying eggs or young must be returned to their water within their natural range.

Noxious fish Please report any sightings of noxious fish to DPI&F on 13 25 23. People must not possess noxious fish or keep, hatch, rear, sell, consign or place them in any container. Tilapia, carp and gambusia are some of the declared species of noxious fish. Along with other noxious and non-indigenous fish, they must not be released into Queensland waters or be used as bait, either live or dead. After they are caught, all noxious fish must immediately be killed and must not be returned to the water. Noxious fish compete with native species and could greatly reduce native fish numbers and affect their habitat.

Measuring finfish Finfish are measured from the tip of their mouth to the end of their tail (see illustration). If you unintentionally take a fish (including finfish or crustaceans) that is not the legal size or is unwanted, return it to the water immediately, taking care to avoid causing injury to the fish. Measuring device. DPI&F recommends using a sturdy ruler or coil tape measure to determine the length of catch. Adhesive or stickon devices can shrink when exposed to weather and be unreliable.

Paul Chapman’s definition of a good paramedic runs much deeper than medical ability. To him understanding, sensitivity and patience all go hand-inhand with the job. The Cunnamullabased ambulance officer has worked hard to overcome a yawning cultural divide in his local community. In 2006 Mr Chapman was named Paramedic of the Year at the Star Care Awards for Excellence in recognition of his work in the predominately indigenous community. Membership: $25 per person, this runs from January to December and includes admission to the four race meetings held over the year. Requirements: Anybody can become a member. You are not required to participate in the running of the race club if you do not wish to do so! Events: Cunnamulla’s main race day is the Anzac Day Races held on 25th April every year. Race meetings are also held in June, late July and September or early October. Trackside bookies will take your bet on the day and you can even place bets on horses in Sydney and Melbourne if you wish. There are bar and canteen facilities and at some meetings “fashions on the field” competitions are held.

Membership: $20 for a family, $10 for a single. Membership runs from May until the end of April and includes your admission to the Cunnamulla Show. The show is held annually in May. See calendar of events for details. Events: Fundraising events and meetings of the different departments are held throughout the year. The annual Show is held on the last weekend of May. It is an exciting weekend with plenty to do, there are many displays and subsections within the show society. These include sheep and wool, horticulture, cattle, school work, handicrafts, cooking, artwork and produce just to name a few. Some other exciting events held at the Show include the Ute Show, shearing, dog jump, horse events, motorbike gymkhana, pet parade and the Miss Showgirl and Show Princess competition. Everyone is invited to become a member of the Show Society. We are always on the lookout for new members and contributors to the Show. It’s a great day out and a good chance to catch up with the community. Carnivals/Events: Regular competition is held against Quilpie, Charleville, Augathella, St George and occasionally Roma. Travel to away carnivals is usually by bus. New players are welcome. Membership: A full adult membership is approx $350 per year (adjusted annually, including Affiliation Fees payable to the Queensland Polocrosse Association). Other categories include sub juniors, juniors, intermediates with casuals and trial players always welcomed. Requirements: To play you will need a horse, helmet, riding equipment, polocrosse racquet, club saddlecloth and uniform. Events: Practice days are held regularly throughout the year, contact Corissa for dates. The Cunnamulla annual carnival is to be held 26th & 27th June 2010. The carnival features camping facilities, stables, hot showers, canteen and bar all weekend. On the Friday night there is a barbecue, on Saturday night there is a hot dish night. Happy hour is also held on Saturday afternoon.

Clay target shooting is a challenging, skilful and responsible sport enjoyed by men and women of all ages across Australia and around the world. Clay targets are approximately 11cm in diameter and are thrown from trap machines at approx. 100kph in a variety of directions. There are 300 clubs around Australia that are afﬁliated with the Australian Clay Target Association (Inc), and they regularly hold practice and competitions for their members. Coaches are on hand to train beginners to prepare them for their entry into competition.

Clay target shooting is truly a family sport, open to all ages with members ranging from school age to competitors in their eighties. In most clubs you will ﬁnd a wide cross section of parents, their children and their grandparents participating together.

You can have a lifetime of fun and competition at your local club, in return for a small investment in the shotgun of your choice. On the other hand, if competing at State level is what you aspire to, then like any other sport the costs can be as high as your goals and budget will allow.

Clay target shooting is one of the safest sports of all. Membership in a club offers you the safest means of learning to shoot. In addition to personal assistance from members, coaching clinics are held regularly to help develop skills. Safety rules are enforced at all times for your protection and the safety of others.

What types of people are clay target shooters? All kinds! Men, women and youngsters. They believe in safe handling of ﬁrearms and take pride in shooting. They enjoy competing with themselves and others for prizes. Moving up into higher levels of competition is a great personal achievement.

What type of firearm is required? You do not need the most expensive shotgun in the store to enjoy clay target shooting. It should be in good condition (if second hand), capable of handling modern loads and with a stock of reasonable fit. More details on correct fit can be obtained from club coach.

Clay target shooting Trap targets are thrown on the shooter’s call from a trap house at the centre of the layout. Shooters move through ﬁve different stations around the layout to shoot at the forward moving target from different angles.

Race Day: The Noorama Races are one of the best bush racing experiences , held the second Saturday in April each year. A canteen is available all day and at night enjoy a delicious dinner. Bush camping facilities are available and security is also on hand. It is always a truly memorable experience for all.
