4GR is the longest-serving commercial radio station in Queensland. It has been part of the fabric of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt for longer than most of the residents, and still maintains its position as the ‘go-to’ station for local information. Weekdays kick off with 4GR Big Breakfast from 5 to 9am. Hosts Lee & Lizzy wake the Darling Downs and Granite Belt with local news and information, interviews, local issues, engaging phone talkback topics and the greatest hits from the 70’s to now. The Big Breakfast is always fun, fast paced, slightly irreverent and involves listeners every day. However, when serious local issues arise, the Big Breakfast is always on the case. From 9am, Australia’s #1 talkback host Ray Hadley takes over, followed at 11am by Focus On The Downs, a local talk/entertainment program hosted by Toowoomba local Graham Healy. From 1pm it’s an hour of national current affairs commentary from Australia’s #1 broadcaster, Alan Jones, followed by Toowoomba and The Downs’ greatest hits. 4GR is “Everything Darling Downs”.

Master of Ceremonies (MC) Lover of all things outdoors, Peter “Spida” Everitt from The Great Australian Doorstep travel TV and radio show will be heading west to Cunnamulla with his family to MC and host talks at the inaugural Cully Fest 2016. These days, the legendary Australian rules footballer is better known as an adventure-mad, funmachine exposing the best travel, adventure and fishing spots to a national and global audience through his travel television and radio shows. A passionate cook, who does all the cooking at home, Spida is looking forward to joining in with the group and learning some new techniques and flavors from nature such as gum leaves, quandongs and bush herbs and spices.
Spida is due to join us on the banks of the Warrego and local anglers can’t wait to challenge the fishing great Spida who now has his own fishing online magazine XXXX Anglers. Who knows if Spida can score himself a big elusive Murray Cod or will the Cunnamulla fishermen, who know the Warrego River like the back of their hand, prove that local knowledge is hard to beat? Either way it will be a great day and we can’t wait to get out on the water.

The Angels They’'ll Getcha Rockin’’ Legendary Australian rock band, The Angels, are heading outback as the main musical attraction at Cully Fest 2016. With an extensive back catalogue featuring hits such as Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again, Shadow Boxer, Take A Long Line, Marseilles, No Secrets and Dogs Are Talking to name a few, the band’s tracks are a high rotation staple on radio stations around the country. Four decades after they formed, The Angels are still rocking as hard as ever, performing sold out shows around Australia and being invited to perform at some highly coveted international gigs. Forming in Adelaide in the 1970s, the early formation of The Angels went under the guise of The Moonshine Jug and String Band, which featured Rick and John Brewster and their pal, Doc Neeson. This evolved into the Keystone Angels and eventually The Angels, who signed a record deal with AC/ DC’s label Alberts, and as they say, the rest is history. The band, which now features Dave Gleeson on vocals, Nick Norton on drums, Sam Brewster on bass and John and Rick on guitars, celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2014, and also released an album of all new material the same year titled Talk The Talk, which garnered them new fans far and wide. The Angels just keep on getting better each year and it’s no surprise to find that their live shows are now packed with all different generations of fans. There’s no slowing this band down – they just keep rockin’ and so will everyone at Cully Fest 2016 in Cunnamulla!

Christopher Coleman Collective The Christopher Coleman Collective formed in Fern Tree, Tasmania in December 2011. Since those times, 31 musicians and a choir have collaborated, cut an album and toured Australia, UK, New Zealand and US. As a songwriter, Coleman’s appreciation for polar opposites is evidenced by ‘December’ and ‘500mg.’ Coleman traverses folk, blues and rock, weaving evocative, narrative-driven songs, for a show that has been described as: “An incredible hour of organic, seeming effortless and inspiring music” – Aphra Magazine “Captivating and mesmerising, making it easy to become lost in Coleman’s world” - The AU Review.

Who hasn’t started their singing career with a stellar performance in the shower? Josephine studied drama and theatre by trade and has dabbled in a variety of musical genres from jazz, blues, funk, bluegrass, gospel and more. However, it wasn’t until her husband gave her a guitar that she discovered her true calling
– writing and performing folk and country ballads. You’ll find Josephine running workshops on ‘how to project your natural voice’, ‘improvised singing’ and ‘how to sing in harmony’. On the theatrical side, she’ll be running theatre sports and improvisation workshops.

Darren Hanlon After years of touring the far flung corners of Australia and the greater world, Darren Hanlon has carved a place in the hearts of many who cross his path. He has the ability to make a large crowd feel like they’re in a lounge room amongst friends with his candid and charming storytelling. With six acclaimed albums and many radio singles under his belt, he is currently touring his latest release, ‘Where Did You Come From?’, which came about after an epic adventure in the American south, where he recorded songs in New Orleans, Memphis, Muscle Shoals, Nashville and Clarksdale, with an array of musicians he met along the way. From legend instrumentalists of popular music, Spooner Oldham (Neil Young, Bob Dylan etc), David Hood (Aretha Franklin etc), Howard Grimes (Al Green) to talented unknown buskers and street musicians he just stumbled upon, Hanlon has woven a richly conceived collection of songs steeped in southern Americana that backs new songs written in his inimitable idiosyncratic style.

Michael Nicholas Environmental artist, Michael Nicholas, has more than a passing attachment to Cunnamulla – he has strong family connections and his art demonstrates his deep affinity for Australia’s desert country. And fittingly, his painting of a young stockman squatting on the ground was turned into the Cunnamulla Fella bronze statute that graces Cunnamulla’s main street today. Join Michael for Charcoal Drawing Master Classes, an exhibition of his own works and the chance to purchase his original artworks on 1 April. 26

Didgeridoo Making Putting soul into Didgeridoo making There’s a real art to didgeridoo making that starts with picking the perfect piece of wood. But the magic comes when you work it – by stripping the bark and clearing the centre – because that’s when you put soul into it and that, according to Paul “Crumbo” Crumblin, is where the music comes from. Aboriginal didgeridoo-makers can walk for miles through the bush looking for the perfect tree – Mali, Blue Box or Grey Box - that’s been hollowed by termites. Then it’s a matter of tapping them to check they’re hollow and they’re ready for cutting. With total respect for the land, Didge makers take only what they need. Once the bark is removed and the interior cleaned, the outside is sanded and holes are filled and sealed with beeswax. In order to play the instrument, you need a beeswax mouthpiece and it’s ready to go. Then comes the real hard stuff – the circular breathing technique, which gives the instrument its haunting sound. Didgeridoo making is a fascinating process which Crumbo reckons should be taught to all Aussies if we’re going to bridge the cultural divide. “Carpentry aside, this engineering was advanced for the time and it’s great to be able to show people from all walks of life the ingenuity behind it,” he said.

didgeridoo playing 34 #cullyfest
Ask a child what sound a didgeridoo makes and you’ll likely end up in stitches of laughter... more will follow if you ask them to play it. There’s a certain fascination with didgeridoos the world over, due in part to their unique, eerie sound and fabulous form, but mostly due to their difficulty to master. That’ll all change at Cully Fest 2016, when internationallyrenowned Aboriginal Performing Artist, Mark Atkins joins forces with Cunnamulla locals to teach Outback festival goers how to master the infamous circular breathing technique.

TheatreSports
Hip Hop Dance Section Saturday 1-2pm Primary Age Theatresports are a fun and supportive way to explore drama through improvisational games with a focus on collaborative storytelling. After an energetic physical and vocal warm-up, the group will be divided into teams and take turns performing scenes selected at random from cards. For younger children, these stories may be adapted from fairy tales with a narrator to help them along. Older children may be given a story to improvise within a certain genre, such as the horror version of “the cooking class”. All scenes have a time limit and the results are often hilarious. www.cullyfest.com

Bush Survival Skills
Crack the whip and round ‘em up, The Drover is comin’ to Cully Fest! Retired Boss Drover, Les Capewell, took his first road trip from St George to Cunnamulla when he was just a babe in arms. His mother was atop the horse and sulky and stashed Les safely in a butter box under the sulky seat. When they pulled up and camped for the night, the collar off the horse served as his crib. He grew up on the droving trail and from the ripe old age of 13 years, he took on his own droving plant, becoming Boss Drover under the watchful eye of his grandfather, who agreed to be camp cook on the trip. Les is a typical outback larrikin, who enjoys nothing more than sharing his stories and bush survival skills with an audience. A great whip cracker and a big character, Les is larger-than-life and looks forward to cracking his Aussie Stock Whip during Cully Fest. Learn your bush survival skills with Les at Coffee House/Bar Friday 12-1pm Saturday 12-1pm 38

Story Telling
For indigenous Australians, storytelling is both a gift, and a tradition that transcends the words, and cuts right to the spiritual relationship between the elements, man and the earth. Herb Wharton is a legend in these parts. He stumbled on to story telling when injuries prevented him continuing on the rodeo circuit. His sister gave him a paper and a pencil and the words and poems flowed about the things that he knew – life on the land, droving and wonderful Dreamtime stories like The Moondagutta, a spiritual creature that lives in the river. Young and old alike are invited to join us, in the heart of the south west, as our local story tellers, like Herb, weave tales about our tiny town and beyond. This cuts right to the heart of Photo Š Alli Sanderson what Cully Fest is all about. www.cullyfest.com

Hosted Talks We’ve scoured the Paroo region and compiled an eclectic mix of speakers. Whilst their topics vary from droving to being a roo man, their passion for this region shines through. This is authentic Australia right here, folks!

Dance Workshops Hip Hop is rooted in African American culture. The story goes that a Bronx DJ, was entertaining at his sister’s back-to-school party in the 70s and tried something new on the turntable: he extended an instrumental beat (breaking or scratching) to let people dance longer (break dancing) and began rapping to it... and the rest, as they say, is history. Bonnie Muir is set to bring hip hop from the Bronx backstreets to the main street of Cunnamulla. Bonnie is a dancer first and foremost, an accomplished choreographer and a Director of the Australian Teachers of Dancing – a position that has seen her teach her hip hop moves all over the world. Are you ready, Cunnamulla?

Festival Timetable Thursday, March 31 – Celebrating The River In any Outback town, the river is the lifeblood of the community – a stable waterhole means animals (kangaroos, emus, turtles, yabbies’ and birds) come in and locals don’t have to hunt further afield for their tucker. As times have changed, the development of the Allan Tannock Weir has allowed
surrounding landholders to irrigate their properties and sustain their livelihood.
the coffee-coloured waters deliver excellent fishing with anglers luring Yellowbelly, giant Murray Cod, Catfish and Did you know the word Silver Perch to shore. It’s also Warrego is Aboriginal for river the perfect spot to cool off of sand? Yet, for the residents on a warm Queensland day. of Cunnamulla (which means long stretch of water in the It’s only fitting then that the local lingo), the river is so opening day of Cully Fest much more. In these parts, celebrates life by the river.
Friday, April 01 – Celebrating Outback Culture Aboriginal art and the land are inseparable... and it is Aboriginal art that reinforces Australia’s identity as the place in the world with the longest continuing human culture. There is great interest on the world’s stage – not just with musicians like Mark Atkins, but with institutions
like Harvard and The Tate in London bringing Aboriginal Art to the fore. At Cully Fest we take this culture... the story telling, the didgeridoo playing and the art out of sterile museums and into the very place that inspired it - a living, breathing Outback environment
where the dirt is red, where kangaroos bound and where the legendary Moondagutta lurks below the surface of the river. It’s hands-on, it’s natural and it’s authentic. Today’s the day to celebrate the best of our Aboriginal and Outback culture.
Saturday, April 02 – Celebrating Aussie Rock Australian’s have a love affair with Aussie music and they don’t come any better than The Angels – with new frontman, Dave Gleeson. These guys have been part of the Australian musical landscape for 40+ years and promise to delve deep into their huge back catalogue at
tonight’s main event. Today, however, Cully Fest is all about the music and we’ve sourced Outback, Local and Aboriginal performers from the south west and beyond to perform over the four days. Plus, we’ve giving wouldbe stars the change to be
discovered with our festival busking competition – the Grand Final’s tomorrow. Come, help us celebrate Australian music in all its forms... with a good dose of Outback culture thrown in for good measure.
Sunday, April 03 – Celebrating The Faces And Places There’s dirt, there’s dust and there’s desert out back, but there’s also one thing that thrives in this sometimes unforgiving environment and that’s the unconventional and utterly engaging characters you’ll find at each and every township. The people and the
faces are a major drawcard to the places... and, with great country hospitality, you’ll find them happy to sit and share a yarn or two. At Cully Fest, we’re celebrating all of our eccentricities and differences with a variety
of hosted talks, workshops, concerts and performances. It’s your time to rub shoulders with Outback legends – like poet Herb Wharton – and learn just what it’s like to grow up out back.

Volunteer at Cully Fest We want you! The event will also be powered by an army of volunteers and locals committed to creating opportunities for future training, employment and industry development in our drought-stricken town. If you think you’ve got what it takes to help, we’d love to hear from you. www.cullyfest.com.au 07 4655 1679 | info@outthebackaustralia.com.au www.cullyfest.com
