ery few Nigerians have her sense of style, very few Nigerians have her pedigree, a one-time Member, Federal House of Representatives, a one-time distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic, a one-time top Presidential aide, the daughter of a journalist who got married to a first-rate journalist and to top it all, a Princess from Calabar. Senator Florence Ita-Giwa is indeed in a class of her own. Little wonder that when she hit seventy, the always glamorous and elegant lady was given the kind of extra-special celebration that she truly deserves. The kind of celebration that reverberated all over the country, the kind that is reserved for the matriarch of Nigeria’s high society. Fondly called Mama Bakassi for her indefatigable and consistent advocacy and struggle for the neglected people of Bakassi Local Government of Cross River State, Senator Ita-Giwa’s festivities included a day of recognition in the house of God with a soulstirring ceremony co-ordinated by the Methodist Church, conferment of a Honorary Doctorate Degree a fashion Show, a women’s summit-and rounded off with an awe-inspiring, star-studded ball in Lagos. In the last four decades in Nigeria’s social scene, if one is asked to count five fashion icons in Nigeria, the Septuagenarian Ita-Giwa will certainly make that short list. She always steps out in sartorial style and it was in recognition of her impact on the local fashion industry that the Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria (FADAN) hosted a fashion show in her honour. Held at the posh Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, the event according to FADAN President, Mrs. Funmi Ladipo was packaged to celebrate “a true Fashionista, a promoter of local designers and lady of substance” Mrs. Ladipo herself an accomplished fashion designer noted that Ita-Giwa was not only a fashion 8
amazon. Elisha Attai, the brain behind AWLO told this Reporter that Senator Ita-Giwa apart from being a great supporter of AWLO from the get go, has been an epitome of womanhood-beauty, brains and hardwork. Not only that, she has a golden heart, filled with compassion for the lessprivileged. The intellectually-stimulating event saw papers delivered by women who have made their marks in various spheres of life. Ambassador Jolade Onipede (Ambassador of Nigeria to the Congo ) spoke on The Role of Mentorship in Political Aspirations; Former Speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Titi Oseni spoke on Career Options for Women in Politics and former Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Iyom Josephine Anenih, spoke candidly on Balancing a Career in Politics and Home Management. Gushing with so much joy, the celebrant in her address went down memory lane, recalling her adventure into politics. She hinted that joining politics was not because she wanted to make money, but because she discovered an opportunity to help the downtrodden in the society, using her Bakkassi people as a starting point. She advised women to jettison fear and be courageous if they must succeed in politics. A key highlight of the evening was the induction of some notable members of the society into the AWLO Hall of Fame as Honorary Senator Ita-Giwa with Mrs. Sarah Brown & members. Some of them included Mrs. Iyom Josephine Anenih, Ambassador Jolade Onipede, President bill Clinton Hon. Titi Oseni and His Royal Highness, Eze Emmanuel N. E. Ibe, the Akagu 1. you can call a true “Sisi Eko”-having shaped and dictated the pace of the Lagos fashion and social scene for decades. And as expected, the cream of Nigerian society were there to honour a truly great Nigerian. It was an evening of who’s who, a memorable occasion filled with pomp, glitz and upscale glamour. In terms of entertainment, it was the best. It featured back to back performances by Nigerian top stars of the last three

decades. From the quality of Comperes to the entertainers, the food menu and drink’s list, to the intimidating array of guests, this was without any shadow of doubt, a 10-star evening! Guests were advised to wear outfits with a “touch of red”-and therefore the venue, the Ball Room of Eko Hotel & Suites was a sea of red! It was also aptly themed “The Red Ball: The Joy of Service to Humanity, as always, Senator Ita-Giwa did not want to miss yet
another opportunity to draw attention to the plight of the Children of Bakassi. The birthday dame herself turned out in a spectacular gasp-inducing red gown-certainly she shone like a zillion stars. Flanked by her children, with the eldest, Mrs. Koko Obioha (whom this Reporter used to call the Crayfish Girl as a baby) leading the way, Ita-Giwa made quite a spectacular entrance with all guests on their feet, showering her with a wondrous applause. 27

None of these pulsating performances got the highest and most emotional moment of the day, that award went to the moment when all her children, again led by Mrs. Koko Obioha, stepped on stage to sing a special birthday song for the celebrant. Ita-Giwa, the usually lion hearted, woman of steel, was so moved that she broke down in tears! Tears were still streaming from the corner of her eyes when she joined them on 28

stage to make a short remark. This was not choreographed, it was real life, indescribable joy expressed by Senator ItaGiwa. Many in the audience also shed a tear, two or more, that was how infectious that moment was. In her speech, she thanked God for the protection and the provision of the past seventy years, and thanked the many friends who have stood by her solidly over the years. She later presented awards to individuals and personalities that have supported her worthy cause. Soon she cut her birthday cake and the evening began to wind down. It must be said that it was a wonderful celebration. This was the kind of evening where all guests went home with smiles on their faces as well as an exclamation “Oh what a night! he Dangote Group owned by Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote has began construction of a $1 billion cement factory in Okpella, Edo State. It was a double ceremony as the billionaire businessman also celebrated his 59th birthday on that same day, April 10th. The project which will be completed within 26 months will create 6,000 direct jobs and 45,000 indirect jobs in the community. Speaking at the ceremony, Dangote said that the project will meet local demands for cement, as well as surplus for export and foreign exchange generation. He also urged other investors to look at other investment opportunities in Nigeria, saying the Federal Government have created investor friendly policies to boost investments. Gov. Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state said that the investment will
reduce the state’s dependence on federal allocation and boost its internally generated revenue and he also perform the official ground-breaking which signals commencement of construction. Dignitaries at the ceremony includes; the Emir of Kano, Alh. Sanusi Lamdi, Mr. Femi Otedola, Alh. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje (Gov of Kano State), Hon. Hajiya Aisha Abubakar, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Alh. ge-long tradition mixed seamlessly with modernity when Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, wedded Wuraola Otiti Zainab Obanor at exciting ceremonies in Benin City, Edo State and Ile-Ife, Osun State. The ceremonies were not only regal and classy, they were colourful and glamorous and all those who attended had no doubt that the couple had gone to great length to make the occasion memorable. 42

This royal wedding began in the lovely home of the bride’s family located in highbrow GRA, Benin City. As expected, the Royal Ogunwusi family was well represented-and they brought with them great gifts for the bride and her family. Due to tradition, His Imperial Majesty was not physically present but his staff of office was conspicuous throughout the ceremony. The Obanor family awaited their in-laws with joy in their hearts, and apart from the bride’s father, elders of her family and Bini Chiefs, Chairman, Polo Limited, Mr. John Obayuwana was ever present to support the bride. After the presentation of gifts by the groom’s family, the couple’s marriage was sealed with the breaking of Kolanuts and showering of spiritual blessing on the union. The last segment of the 44
ceremony according to the Bini tradition was for the bride to be taken by her dad and placed on the lap of her groom, she was made to stand and sit for few times. This rite, we were told, is to signify that the groom is strong enough to love and care for his bride. This over, there were cheers from all corners of the venue as the event came to a close. The Obanor family rolled out the drums in a big way minutes later at a reception for guests held inside a huge marquee on the grounds of Edo motel, Okada Drive, GRA, Benin. The bride who was decked appropriately in full Bini wedding attire, complete with coral beads arrived the venue in a Lincoln Continental Limousine. The reception was short but lively as the bride had to leave to meet her Prince Charming, the Ooni of Ife.
On arrival in Ife, the beautiful bride was met with too loose so much pomp and pageantry. Well decorated horses, drummers, pipers and singers welcomed the New Olori (Queen) to the ancient city. Before she stepped foot on the palace, she went through some cleansing rites-and it was fun and laughter all the way as she walked into the warm embrace of the eagerly awaiting monarch. The ancient town of Ile-Ife was agog the following day when the Crème de la Crème of Nigeria turned up for a special thanksgiving service at the Royal Court of Ife, Aafin, Enuwa Square to celebrate the royal wedding. Thereafter, there was a lavish reception where guests, old and young, rich and poor were adequately entertained.

A
miable Abuja-based businessman, Abiodun Adisa Shola-Bakare was almost in tears inside The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Utako, Abuja branch when he gave a powerful testimony how God turned his life from nothing to something, how God took him from poverty to prosperity, insisting that on this his 50th birthday, the first person to thank and give honour to is God Almighty. The dashing gentleman fondly called Sholz B noted that it was fitting for him to begin his birthday celebrations from the House of God. Singing cheerfully and accompanied by
his wife, Oluwatoyin and children, he thanked his wife for standing by him through thick and thin and revealed that his only wish is for God to bless him with good health because he was going to spend the rest of years fervently serving God. After the inspirational and powerpacked service, the Shola-Bakares hosted their family, friends and associates, some of who arrived all the way from United Kingdom and United States, to a sumptuous reception at the International Conference Centre, Peace Park. The event was chaired by Admiral Mike Onah. 53

t was one of those evenings that could never be forgotten, the 60th birthday celebration of Osa Sunny Adun, the Chairman/CEO of Degue Broadcast Network (DBN), the first private television station in Nigeria and one of the indefatigable pioneers of private broadcasting was nothing but remarkable. The event held at the prestigious Eko Hotel served two purposes, the celebration of this celebrated and foreward-looking gentleman and also the inauguration of DBN Alumni Association. According to the alumni of DBN the station is more than a broadcast company; it is a breeding ground for talents. Female singer, Essence, the host of popular programme, Who wants to be a millionaire Frank Edoho, Quincy Ayodele, the owner of Quincy Herbal Slimmers and a whole lot of others were brought into limelight by the station. And they all shared their experiences. Later on, DBN unveiled its new logo, after which the celebrant cut his lovely cake. Guests were thrilled by Alabai, Essence, Weird MC and comedian, Bovi. It was a very superlative celebration for a great Nigerian.

Late Pa Adeoye Adisa
L
ife is not really how long we live, but how well, just like the words of Abraham Lincoln, “And at the end, it is not the years in your life that counts, it is the life in your years”. These words aptly mean that longevity is not the fundamental component of a commendable life. For Former Minister of Home Affairs and Information in the old Western Region, Otun Balogun of Oyo, and elder Statesman, Chief Emmanuel Adeoye Adisa who died at the ripe age of 97, his was a wonderful life worthy of emulation. His journey to eternal glory began with a wake keep service which was held at Omolewa Street, off UCH Road, Yemetu, Ibadan Oyo State. While Commendation Service of the late prominent politician, took place at The Cathedral of St. Peter, Aremo, Ibadan, Oyo State. As a devout Christian and father of the Senior Pastor of Grace Family International Church, Rev. Deola Ojo, the church service was inspirational and followed the order of the Anglican
Church. The congregational hymn, prayers, Bible reading, Tributes and communion rites. During the sermon, Vicar, Rev. Ayodeji Ayodele, urged everyone to draw lessons from the life of the deceased. He said” Pa Adisa was not only a highly principled Community Leader with impeccable character but also deeply compassionate and close to God before his death. Pa Adisa’s death was painful; Nigerians would never forget that he lived a life full of integrity, honour and selfless service. Those in the political class should emulate him by eschewing politics of bitterness, hatred and tribalism, which he stood for during his life time. After his interment at his residence: Omolewa Street, off Queen Elizabeth Road, UCH/Yemetu, Ibadan, guests were treated to a grand reception at Emeritus T.O Ogunlesi Multipurpose Hall opposite UCH Main Gate, University College Hospital Ibadan, Oyo State.

t was a million tiny little things that when added all up, meant we were supposed to be together and I knew it. I knew it the first time I touched her. It was like coming home-only to no home I'd ever known . I was just taking her hand to help her out of a car and I knew it was like magic". The above quote from 1993 America Romantic Comedy Sleepless in Seattle, a favourite of Adebayo Omoboriowo, the official photographer of the President

Muhammadu Buhari, is one of the many reasons why he pitched his eternal love tent with the delectable Omolola Omitokun. "We met at a church programme. It was a skills acquisition event. I was in the Cakes and Confectionary class while he was a facilitator for Photography. We got talking when I was offered a lift by him from Church", Omolola gushed. "He proposed in Dubai. issues with our hotel booking so we had to book another hotel. When we got to the new hotel, I noticed the guide and my friends were acting strangely and pushing me to go to a room. When I got inside, I saw roses on the floor and on the bed. Then, I saw someone hiding with a camera at the back of a curtain and when I turned back I saw Bayo walking towards me holding a box in his hand and I started laughing", the elated bride revealed the genesis of their lifetime journey. The event commenced with the solemnization of the holy matrimony at Our Saviour's Church, Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos with the Reverend Canon Folorunso O. Agbelusi as the Officiating Minister. He advised the couple to settle their disputes amicably without the involvement of a third party. He backed this up with a verse from 88
the Holy Bible "That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh". The church service ended with a Thanksgiving after which guests proceeded to Yetunde's Place, Park View, Ikoyi, Lagos for the reception. pouring encomiums on him. The major points from all the speeches was that Mr. Ayoade is a dependable friend, loving husband, a wonderful father and a very focused as well as hardworking man. What could be described as the highest point of the occasion was not cutting of the creatively-crafted cake by Chinelo Igbelina , which he did with a gale of smiles supported by his family, but when his wife took the mi-
crophone and seductively sang Celine Dion’s “Because you love”. She spent time, gentle emphasising each of the words to the admiration of all, especially her husband who was literarily on cloud 9. Of course, she got a resounding ovation for the sparkling performance. The Ayoade family was at their hospitable best. ITK Catering ensured that guests had a rich choice of meals, while assorted drinks were available. In addition, they

Later, the celebrant told OVATION that he was thankful to God for sparing his life in good health to the age of 50. Revealing that his birthday prayer was in fact that God should bless him with many more years of excellent health. Mr. Ayoade who told us that his only regret was that some family members were not given visas to attend the 96
event, went on to discuss his growing up days. “ I was born and had my elementary education in Ibadan before relocating to Lagos for my secondary and tertiary education. I was brought up by a very strict uncle but nevertheless, my growing up was fun and I could say I had the best of childhood experience. “ I usually used to sneak out of the house during school holidays to do some manual labour jobs without the consent of my parents/uncle just to have some extra
cash to spend in school on resumption. Also, I took risks on several occasions with a very good friend of mine, on one occasion, we took a swing on a tree branch across a canal of about 100ft deep. Those were the days”, he said with a lot of nostalgia. Mr Ayoade who hopes to retire fully to his family business described himself as an epitome of contentment and gave his philosophies of life as “Live and let live. Never be in a rush, God’s time is the best.

ow do I begin to express my sense of loss? I find it so difficult to believe Baba is gone. Many may not understand why I should agonize at the exit of a 99 year old father. Walking to your living room has been a nightmare'', one of the children of the late Pa Samuel Imahiyerobo Onaiwu, Osemwonyemwen these were the words of Osemwonyemwen in his moving tribute. When people die and leave positive impacts in the lives of those around them like the deceased did, it is difficult adjusting to the reality of not having them around anymore. 'Baba at Alaghodaro' as the deceased was fondly addressed was a true believer in Christ and a role model to those who encountered him - an exceptionally gifted grammarian with enviable verbal power of expression that earned him the nickname 'Walloper'. He was an embodiment of peace and a principled gentleman. A lover of children whose house was a home for all. Catering for the lessprivileged was a thing he enjoyed doing and this made him a man after people's
hearts. Guests, well-wishers and those who have benefitted from the deceased's goodwill thronged his residence at Alaghodaro Street off Ehaekpen road, Benin City for the service of songs/wake keep. His family members could not hold back their sadness at his departure even though he lived a long life worthy of emulation. The funeral service was at the Central Baptist Church, Ring Road, Benin City with the President, Nigerian Baptist Convention, Rev. (Dr.) Supo Ayokunle as the Officiating Minister. Afterwards, the Baptist Conference Center, TV Road, Benin city, played host to the reception. Dignitaries that travelled from far and wide to pay their last respects included the Esama of Benin, Sir Chief Gabriel Igbinedion and wife, Lady Cherry, Nollywood producer, Lancelot Oduah Imasuen; Captain Hosa Okunbor, Chairman of the People's Democratic Party, Edo State Chapter, Dan Orbih; Hon. rrespective of how we live life, one thing is certain, that we will one day say goodbye to this world. It is best to live a life that when we depart, we would have made so great an impact that many would never forget our sojourn on earth. For Deaconess Veronica Ebunoluwa Lewu, she not only lived a life filled with impact, she served in the vineyard of the Lord, that was why her family and friends gathered in droves to celebrate her when she passed on at the age of 76. The burial ceremony began with a service of songs, which took place at Pa High Chief Solomon Ola Adedoyin Lewu family compound in Kabba, Kogi State. The next day, everyone headed to the Christ Apostolic Mission Church, Oke-Igbala Parish, Kabba for the funeral service. It was a wonderful service with many pouring encomiums on the departed for her honesty, industry and commitment to God’s work. Mrs Lewu's first son, Raphael Lewu expressed his feeling thus: "I remember my early years in Kaduna, it was you and I before Bayo arrived. I remember your
show of love, the early morning bath, the then Fanta drinks, my special rice, which you always dished out of the lots you sold to your numerous customers at now Central Market, Kaduna". He further stated "you did not only serve God in truth, you cared for everyone around you and was equally very frank as well. You said things as you saw them and quick to forgive. You lived in total service of your maker and constantly asked after your relatives even in your ill health". Chief Martin S. Bello, Oborogbonsaiye of Oweland noted that Mama was a very caring disciplinarian to the core and that she would always read her Bible and goes everywhere with it, she was committed to fasting and praying. Later, it was time for interment. The graveside ceremony included a few songs, the dust-todust rites before family and friends bade her farewell and she was laid to rest. Deaconess Veronica Ebunoluwa lewu was indeed an angel sent from above, a beautiful heart deserving a befitting burial.

enowned America actor, James Dean once said “dream as if you will live forever, live as if you will die today”. These quote aptly captures the kind of life led by mother, wife, sister and aunty Chief (Mrs.) Emilia Adunola Akindele. The legacies she left behind still lives on even in death. Mama who died at the ripe age of 90 years was an epitome of discipline she was loved by people around her. Those who came in contact with her during the Modakeke and Ife war testified that she played a big role in accommodating women and children at her abode in Akarabata in Ife, she clothe and fed over 300 women and they all eat three square meals. The late Emilia Akindele possessed a heart of gold and radiated selfless kindness, she loved helping anyone in need and always strived to help and uplift the less fortunate in her community. She was known for her honesty, tenderness and compassion. A
retrospective look at her journey in life will illustrate that “mama” was not Moses; God loved her, God knows her name and by her actions and inactions she certainly established a relationship with her creator. As a committed Christian who always put God first. The Iya Ijo of Total Gospel African Church, Modakeke contributed a lot to her Church and her impact was felt by the entire members of Gospel African church in Modakeke, Ife. Mama who left the world with the assurance that she already knew where she was going, the early morning before she died, started singing “Ao pade lese Jesu” to show that she went straight to her creator There was a service of songs for her at gospel church in front of her house in Akarabata, Ife where family, friends and well-wishers gathered to pay their last respects to a mother who has accomplished all her childhood dreams on earth.
Lots of encomiums were poured on her, the most interesting one came from her son, Mr. Akindele, in his moving tribute, he said “I received the news of her death with shock. But God gives and takes, Glory be to Him. Mama was a dedicated Christian who served God and mankind with all her strength. “She was a loving, caring mother and grandmother. A wonderful, humble, great and openminded mother, cheerful giver even when things are tight for her, but she strived for others to live comfortably. A mentor, icon of hope and champion of peace, mama was a a prayerful scholar of God’s words. A role model that is worthy of emulation”. The well-attended service of came to end as the church Choir rendered their special number and the Minister of God showered blessings on the children. 109

ACADEMY PRESS CELEBRATES 50 EXCELLENT YEARS OF PRINTING Photo: Ken Ehimen
O
ne of Nigeria’s leading quoted companies and a top operator in the Printing business, Academy Press PLC is 50-and it rolled out the trumpets in a big way to celebrate this wonderful occasion. The company which recently acquired and installed new equipment worth over N1.5 billion and has over the years followed the trend of retooling and modernising its facilities is certainly in good stead to continue its pioneering role in the business Speaking at a Customer’s Forum, held at the company’s premises, Ilupeju, Lagos, as part of the 50thAnniversary activities, Managing Director, Mr Gbenga Ladipo said the company has not deviated from its original objective “which is to fill the vacuum of a large printing establishment in the country, noting that the printing industry is facing huge challenges because most of its raw materials are imported” “A key material such as paper completely
depends on importation. So is ink, plates, chemicals, spare and so on. In the era of huge naira devaluation, this has become a big challenge on our cost of production and invariably the cost for our customers.” Ladipo said both the printers and the publishers are discussing with the government on the way forward. Days after this, the Golden Jubilee celebration was rounded off with a colourful dinner at the Four Points By Sheraton Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. Chief Olu Akinkugbe was Chairman of the occasion. Mr. Ladipo used the opportunity to reveal the outstanding achievements of the last half a century before dedicated and industrious staff were specially mentioned and decorated with various awards. The ceremony was not all speeches, there was plenty to eat and drink as well as good quality music as guests danced till well into the night.

THE FORMAL LAUNCH OF
ONLINE PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA
Olufemi Awoyemi (President online Publishers Association of Nigeria) & special guests

T
he Online Publishers Association of Nigeria (OPAN) had its formal launch in Lagos, the Centre of Excellence with endorsements from world’s number one search engine firm, Google; Mr. Nduka Obaigbena, Publisher of Nigeria’s foremost newspaper, ThisDay and Chairman, Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), state governments and corporate Nigeria. At the launch, OPAN and its members pledged a self-regulated, process-driven, credible, reliable and a well-structured Nigerian online publishing space. Hosted at the Protea Hotel, Westwood, Ikoyi, Lagos the event brought together stakeholders from the public and private sectors who were eager to witness a new phase of online publishing in Nigeria.
Mr. Charles Aigbe, guest, Olufemi Awoyemi & Mrs. Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor
In his opening remarks the President of the OPAN, Mr. Olufemi Awoyemi noted that with the increase in internet penetration in Nigeria, there has been an upsurge in online publishing. Speaking on “Imperatives for Standards” Mr. Awoyemi shared that online publishing is the process of publishing original content, following the best practices of journalism. He asserted that the obvious issue in online publishing is balancing “free expression” with the “ethos of journalism”. The OPAN President assured stakeholders that the body will bring to Nigeria, the online publishing ecosystem with global best practices. Delivering her keynote address, the Country Manager, Google Nigeria, Mrs. Juliet Ehimuan-
Chiazor believed the digital space affords online publishers more opportunities than challenges, she spoke on ‘creativity in a digital age’. She identified the fact that through the online space, civic participation in Nigeria has increased remarkably, citing the 2015 general elections as example. Chiazor, however made a bold statement that, “Any publisher that does not have an online presence, risks losing relevance”. From the Google side, the Nigerian Country Manager hinted stakeholders that its “AdSense” tool offered online publishers an opportunity, to monetize their work. In his special message at the occasion, Mr. Obaigbena, lauded OPAN on it launch, but urged online publishers to distinguish themselves as 117

journalists, following the path of transparency, fairness and truth. In his address entitled “Positioning Nigeria’s Online Publishing for Global Reckoning” the foremost Publisher expressed his delight at associating with OPAN, according to him, the internet is a mass communications platform with members of the association realizing that they are Journalists and must go back to old traditional ways of doing journalism which includes investigative journalism and factschecking before publishing. “You go back to the old fashion way of doing journalism, check your facts and write the truth. If you publish the truth, if you publish facts, if you set the right agenda, then you build the right brand online and if you build the right brand, you will get currency, you will get audiences, and it is those audiences that you
monetize. So, you build a great business, essentially, I urge you to all return to that age old virtues of journalism,” he said. Obaigbena reminded OPAN members not to forget the purpose of the online space, which is all about information and education. On his part, Mr. Charles Aigbe, Divisional Head, Marketing and Corporate Relations, UBA Group, in his paper entitled “Reporting with Credibility-Building Value & Trust with Stakeholders” advised members on the need for a fair and balanced reporting system that can impact the society positively. SIXTY HEARTY CHEERS FOR
SENATOR FATIMA RASAKI IN LAGOS Story: Odumade Adebimpe Photo Segun Lawal (Iroko)
L
ife presents us with several remarkable moments, and the most adored moments among them all, are those spent with loved ones. It was the realization of this fact that made the 2-day celebration of Senator Fatimat Raji-Rasaki’s 60th birthday all the more special. It was a moment of tremendous joy for the sexagenarian mother of five considering that not everyone is privileged to attain this age. On that day, unquantifiable happiness filled her heart, as was expressed in the ceaseless charming smiles that permanently lingered across her face. This was because the more her life was praised and celebrated, she continued to thank Almighty Allah for His grace. The first day of the ceremony was a prayer session which was held at the celebrant’s residence in Victoria Island, Lagos. The prayer was conducted by Imam Shafihi Alaye. The celebrant, who was beautifully dressed in a silver traditional attire, enjoyed the session as the clerics wished her sound health, long life and many more years of celebration. During the sermon, the Imam reviewed Senator Fatimat Raji-Rasaki’s contributions to Islam and how unique she had been in all spheres of life. Prayers were also said for her husband, Retired General Raji Alagbe Arowolo Rasaki (CON). The Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos was venue of the reception, it was filled to capacity, with Yvent Kouture taking great care to beautifully decorate the place. The entrance was grand just as Magna Event led by Yinka Oke Owo had planned. The remarkable ceremony started with the proverbial “red” carpet, which came in diverse colours of Purple, Gold and White. Also, the venue was lit up with classy chandeliers which made the venue
128
exquisite and created an atmosphere of love and happiness. With guests gaily dressed and seated, Senator Fatimat Rajii-Rasaki, walked in beautifully dressed in a lovely green and silver enhancements. As a serving Senator, the reception was naturally an assemblage of the political top shots. Apart from the distinguished dignitaries at the prayer session who also turned up at the reception. These were: Ronke Ayuba, Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki; Senator Uche Ekwunife, Oyo State Governor and his wife, Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, former Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly, Mrs. Titi Oseni, Chairman, Senate Committee on Downstream Petroleum Industry, Chief Felix O. Fagbohungbe and Senator Dino Melaye. As guests stepped into the lovely venue, they were warmly ushered into the hall and enthralled by soothing jazzy tunes courtesy of Yemi Sax and Aristors Band. In a section of the hall stood the celebrant's birthday cake, which was itself an artistic expression and the embodiment of elegance. The four tier cake was nicely crafted in white with crystals on it. The cake had the shape of a royal castle and held quite an attraction for all. It was a beauty to behold! They say masters of ceremonies (MC) make events, and the saying proved correct, SACO, a rising star anchored the event. The multi linguist proved to be professional as he played his part with peerless precision as proceeding kicked off when Mrs Eyitayo said the opening prayers. In her opening remarks, Adeola, the celebrant’s daughter, described her mother as a wonderful human being and true mother who was always there for them. In the "let's tell a little story" session, a lot was said
about the celebrant by family, friends, children and colleagues. From the good to the downright humorous, the noholds-barred tributes and remarks exposed the real Senator Fatimat Raji-Rasaki. Indeed, some remarks were vivid descriptions of the humane side of the celebrant’s life, which many never knew. She was described as a disciplinarian par excellence, hardworking woman, a woman who cherishes the simple things of life; a self-assured and confident woman who considered no one a threat to her mission in life. The event was also enlivened with an enchanting dance performance by Apex Dance Crew. Truly, it was a turbo-charged affair from start to finish. In his tribute, the Senate President described the celebrant as a woman of strong character whose political knowledge has seen her soar. "For all this period I have known Fatimat RajiRasaki, She has been very vibrant and has been of great service of Nigeria. The cutting of the cake was officiated by a close friend and First Lady of Oyo State, Mrs. Florence Ajumobi. The exercise was brilliantly, done at the count of S-U-C-C-E-S-S. The celebrant, now decked in a well-designed white grown with diamonds, appreciated friends, family and loved ones who contributed to the success of the event. She specially appreciated her husband, who she described as her pillar of support. The vote of thanks was delivered by Mr. Muritala Rasaki. From then on, guests joined the celebrant on the dance floor and it was jollity all the way. It was really a great way to welcome Senator Fatimat Raji Rasaki into the sexagenarian club.

or His goodness, for His blessing, For His provision and for His protection, Mrs. Omotayo Gbajabiamila-Olomona, a super public servant who has been serving with distinction and an unblemished record had God to thank when she hit the BIG 50. The celebrant who is an Asst. Director, Ministry of Housing, Lagos State hosted family, friends and associates to a sumptuous party at the famous Eagle’s Club, Surulere, Lagos. As expected of a devoted Christian and lover of God, the celebration kicked off with a church service. The
officiating minister was Pastor Isaac Odetunde, he reminded the congregation to always give thanks to God for counting them among the living. He noted that since the Bible directs that we should always give God thanks, we should, because that enables us to get greater blessings from God. He encouraged those in the audience who had not given their lives to Christ to have a rethink because in his opinion, one’s life is more meaningful with God. He said the celebrant was a shining example of what God can do in the life of His Children, especially those who are

ALHAJI ALIKO DANGOTE IS GUARDIAN MAN OF THE YEAR Story: Funmilayo Adeyemi Photo: Segun Lawal

t was indeed an evening of smiles as Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Forbesrated Africa’s Richest man, emerged as Guardian Man of the Year 2016 at a cosy ceremony which unfolded at The Wheatbaker, Ikoyi, Lagos. Right from inception in 1987 when General Olusegun Obasanjo emerged the first Man of the Year for his role as the unofficial critic-in-chief of the military government of the time, it has been the tradition of The Guardian Newspapers to celebrate trailblazers each New Year. The event began with a cocktail session as guests where guests enjoyed assorted wines and canapés, while networking and hobnobbing. Formal proceedings began with a short remark by The Guardian Newspaper’s Editor in-Chief Mr. Debo Adeshina after which Guardian Publisher, Lady Maiden Ibru delivered her speech where she extolled the virtues of Alhaji Dangote. In her words, the man of the moment, defied the odds, and saw opportunities where others pulled back. “For venturing into the quick sands of manufacturing, Dangote has arguably become Africa’s foremost industrialist, entrepreneur, investor and a big employer of labour,” she said. According to the publisher, The Guardian saw early on the need to single out trailblazers as worthy examples for the society, which necessitated the institution of the Man of the Year Award, to celebrate individuals and groups that have made the greatest impact on the lives of the people, nation, continent and the world at large. Explaining the rigorous process that culminates in the eventual
unveiling of the Man or Person of the Year Award, she said the exercise, which usually begins in the Editorial Board with nominations by members, is followed by weeks of debate, during which a shortlist of candidates is drawn up. Speaking on the choice of Dangote for the award, Lady. Ibru said the highly successful entrepreneur was an easy pick. “In our estimation, he stood shoulders higher than others in his bold efforts to become the builder of modern Africa, to create jobs for our teeming population and courageously confront conventional wisdom that says an African entrepreneur stands no chance when pitched against multinational firms from Europe, North America and Asia. “In the process, Alhaji Dangote has rewritten the form book that indicates that Africans would rather patronise Western and Asian firms than one of their own. In choosing Dangote, The Guardian is making a poignant statement about the role of the newspaper in the society. One of which is identifying heroes and publicize good examples as a way of redirecting the values of the society. This is what The Guardian has sought to do with the personalities chosen over the years.” She said. In his remarks, Dangote said he had received three awards this year, and the one from The Guardian stands out. According to him, the award from Forbes was about his worth monetarily which does not matter to him since he would rather work hard than somebody telling him his worth, because ‘’I know what I am worth.’’ 139

He went further to say that despite being the single largest investor in the nation’s economy, Dangote Group is exploring new areas of investments where needs in the society can be met while expanding its investments in the oil and gas industry through its petrochemical plants. “When we announced our plans and target of one million metric tonnes of cement capacity, we were seen as unserious, but today, we receive letters from different countries to come and invest. We are considering investments in essential commodities to 140

meet needs of our people,” he revealed. “I don’t know how The Guardian Newspapers got their ranking criteria, but I must say it is commendable considering that we are never appreciated at home. I don’t need an award to tell me how much I’m worth or being among the powerful people in the world. This recognition is highly appreciated. “What we have achieved with our investment in the Cement industry is to drop the price of cement. Presently, our sales volume is about 45 per cent, but we
are targeting a sales volume of 70 per cent by the end of 2016. The gas pipeline we are trying to build will be the biggest in the country surpassing Federal Government’s own,” he added. During the toast, Chief Operating Officer of The Guardian, Mr Alexander Thomopoulous said: Dangote“Is a pride to Nigeria, Africa and the black race across the world. His humility and character stands him out.” Many dignitaries came to share this wonderful moment with Alhaji Dangote and his family.

MRS. ALERO AWOYEMI THANKS GOD AT 40 Photo: Adekoya Adegbite

S
he is not only favoured but she is fulfilled and indeed fortified at 40. If you are wondering whom we are referring to, she is no other than, Mrs. Alero Ogor Awoyemi, the Executive Director of Proshare Nigeria Limited, and the wife of cerebral financial analyst, Publisher and businessman, Femi Awoyemi. The amiable but taciturn Founding President, Online Publishers Association of Nigeria and his good friend, Charles Ifidon, owner Divine Hotels, who were the key planners of this classy and cosy celebration, ensured that guests got first-rate treatment. Held at the Celebration Gardens Events Centre, GRA, Ikeja proceeding began inside the well-decorated hall with a praise worship, prayer and thanksgiving service. As guests arrived, they were welcomed by soothing gospel melodies by the Praise Band. In his sermon, Pastor Bisi Olowoyo of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Province 21 praised Mrs. Awoyemi for deeming it fit to put God first on her special day. He noted that since aging was inevitable, we all have to adequately prepare, and he then rounded off with an impactful quote “You are not going to be remembered by the amount of the fleet of cars you were able to acquire in your life time but by the impact you made on your generation Mrs. Awoyemi then took the microphone , fell on her knees in supplication to God and belted praise Mrs. Alero Awoyemi: Deep in thanks to God
songs. She then recalled all the challenges she had had and how her life turned around after her encounter with Christ. This segment was rounded off when Pastor, Dr. Stephen Olumuyiwa Onabanjo joined Pastor Olowoyo to pray for the celebrant and her family. After changing into a figurehugging ivory dress, Mrs. Awoyemi now looking like a sweet sixteen was ready for the next segment of the ceremony: The Reception. She, it was, who kicked everything off by dancing into the venue accompanied by her children and family as the Praise Band dished out a medley of Niger Delta Gospel songs. Guests were on their feet cheering and applauding as she made way to her seat. The Master of Ceremonies was Obus Zeles, the Radio Continental 102.3 On Air Personality. He threw the floor open for tributes. Childhood friend, Mrs. Boyowa Efijemueh, described Alero as a pleasant and humble friend who frowns at laziness but loves creativity. Another childhood friend, Dr. (Mrs.) Isoken Aikpokpo described the celebrant as a very focused person. Her elder brother, Mr. Gbubemi Ogor , stated that she was a special child who only celebrated her birthday on leap years. He said she has always been a source of joy to the family. Isaac Osagie, the only staff of www.proshareng.com who spoke, described the celebrant as workaholic and go getter. In all, it was a wellattended, fun-filled celebration of a true gem. 157

hat a day it was for Consultant Optometrist, Dr. Susu Enang when friends, family and associates gathered in Lagos to celebrate her 50th birthday. The Golden lady who is the wife of Idy Enang, CEO, L’Oreal Central/West Africa and Chairman Treasures Foundation Advisory Board was full of joy all through the wondrous occasion. It was at Latter Rain Assembly, Ogba, Lagos that her day began, and being a committed member of the church, it was no surprise that during the service, she was specially anointed by Pastor Tunde Bakare who described her as an indefatigable worker in the House of God. Later, the mother of two, (Akanimo and Morenike) hosted everyone to a lively reception at the Classique Events Centre, Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun Ikeja. Once again, Pastor Tunde Bakare and wife, Olayide were present and he spent many minutes showering the celebrant (who had now changed to a lovely red dress) and her family with prayers. Chukwuma Aligwekwe, the Actor/ Broadcaster fondly called Chico was the Master of Ceremonies and he was at his professional best. The event could be classified as understated but guests still had loads of fun. 160

he dead leave fond memories in the hearts their loved ones. Some led a life of sacrifice for godly affairs and assignments while alive and such people are always celebrated even in death. One such example can be found in Mrs. Mercy Ifeoma Osigwe, a devoted Anglican and mother to Public Relations top shot, Ingram Osigwe. Mrs. Ifeoma, a woman of simple disposition whose penchant for peace among people irrespective of tribe, sex, or religion was commended by many. She slept in the Lord at the fulfilled age of 75 years and it was not surprising therefore that an avalanche of sympathizers thronged en-masse to commiserate with the children and family of the deceased. 164
A funeral service was held for the devoted Christian by the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion at the Osigwes country home in Afor-Umuopia-Akokwa, North L.G.A Imo State. The event was graced by the high and mighty including the Managing Director/CEO, Fairpoint Limited, Chief Sam Okonkwo; Chairman, Orange Drugs, Chief Tony Ezenna among others. Presiding over the interment, the Pastor thanked the congregation for taking out time to pay their final respects to a woman he dubbed, exceptional. He explained that it took the grace of
God and a wonderful heart to touch the lives of people just like the late Amazon did and prayed that her good works remain in the hearts of her family members. “I bless the remains of Mrs. Mercy Ifeoma Osigwe with the holy water that recalls his baptism of which Saint Paul wrote: All of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death. By baptism into His death, we were buried together with Him so that just as Christ was raised from the dead, by the glory of the Father, we too might live a new life; for we have been united with Him by likeness of His resurrection, he added.

life worth living is a life lived for others. This depicts the life of late Mrs. Susannah Olayiwole Ariyo before passing on to glory. The family and friends of the bereaved will definitely miss her because of her kind-hearted nature. The committed Christian lived a life of love, sacrifice and hard work. For the impact she had on many especially her children, she was given a rousing farewell which began with a church service held at Anglican Church of the Messiah, Atiba Street, New Bodija Ibadan, Oyo State. The Pall bearers were very dramatic and they caused quite a stir as they brough her remains to the doorsteps of the church. As the gingerly brought her remains

into the bowels of the church hall, the congregation was on its feet. They were singing the processional hymn, “The Strife is O’er”. The sermon that was preached was based on the way humans should live their lives. The Preacher, Most Reverend (Dr) J.O. Akinfenwa, the Archbishop and Bishop of Ibadan Anglican Diocese who led other men of God talked about righteous living and beseeched the congregation to live a worthy life so that when death comes, they would be able to transit to glory triumphantly. Still on living a good life on earth, the man of God also emphasized on the fact that when we leave this world, there must be a good legacy left behind 167

so that people will remember us, for good and for impacting their lives He also encouraged everyone to get ready for the second coming of Jesus. Later, there was a prayer for the soul of the bereaved and the family of bereaved. In not time, the solemn service was over and Elder (Mrs.) Ariyo’s remains was ferried to her final resting place. There final grave side rites were held, then prayers and she was lowered to mother earth. Tears flowed as the family bid her farewell, A few minutes later, the family hosted a superlative reception at the 168
