QUERIDA
OLYMPIO CELEBRATES 40TH BIRTHDAY WITH A FABULOUS PARTY IN LOME, TOGO Story: Funmi Adeywmi Photo: Adekoya Adegbite
F
orty is the teenage of old age which one can use as a pedestal to live life to the fullest and make it magical. Therefore, when we look into the horizon of life and see the awesomeness that lies ahead, everyone will realize the fact that life’s milestone is worth celebrating. One of those who realized this fact is the quintessential Togolese business woman, Ms Querida Olympio, who hosted family, friends and associates as she clocked 40. The celebration began with a church service which was held at the Notre Dame De Liban, Lome, Togo. The hallmark of the thanksgiving church service was music, and the celebrant, family members and indeed, the congregation, did not hold back their joy as they sang and danced throughout the service. The choir sparkled in their KÊnte outfits and actually stole the show with some exciting choruses, that thrilled everyone. 7

THE CLASSY DINNER
After the bible reading by the celebrant’s younger sister, Soizick Olympio, Reverend Father Jean Baptiste Alade preached the sermon in French. The clergy gave a spirit-lifting message, as he infused a lot of interesting stories and anecdotes from the scriptures which he admonished the congregation to ruminate over. The thanksgiving session featured the celebrant and family dancing towards the altar with various gifts
amidst joy and cheerfulness. The clergy collected the gifts and prayed for the celebrant. Later in the evening, an exquisite dinner party was hosted for few of her friends and close family at Radisson Blu, Lome, Togo. The event which was tagged ‘’40 ans’’ began with the arrival of the gorgeously-dressed celebrant, Ms Querida Olympio, who looked radiant in a white and
pink evening dress and received a standing ovation. After the opening prayer, guests made their way to the buffet table where they enjoyed mouth-watering dishes. Thereafter, a well-designed cake was cut in a bespoke and uncommon manner as guests joined in a flurry of photographs. The following day, guests moved to the celebrant’s residence for a grand house warming. Then it was dance, dance, dance till late in the evening. 15

ADEAGBO THANKS GOD AT 50 Story: Michael Effiong Photo: Adekoya Adegbite & Segun Lawal
T
he glittering Lagos social scene hit a high tempo when influential guests including former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and first-class monarchs gathered for the 50th birthday ceremony of Mrs. Omolara Omobolaji Adeagbo. It was a particularly joyful moment for the celebrant who wore smiles all through the milestone celebration which unfolded at the classy The Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos- and what made the occasion extra special was the presence of world renowned gospel singer, Don Moen, who serenaded guests at intervals during the course of the colourful event. As a committed Christian, who faithfully believes the words of Isaiah 40:31 “But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint, Mrs. Adeagbo began this great day with a soul-lifting thanksgiving service.

THE THANKSGIVING SERVICE A well-decorated venue within The Civic Centre Complex was where the thanksgiving service unfolded. There was an intimidating red carpet that welcomed guests as they stepped out of their vehicles on arrival. That was not all, smiling, courteous and well-clad usherettes were also waiting to receive them-and, the celebrant’s loving husband, businessman, Foluso Adeagbo was there too to personally say welcome and usher them to their seats. This venue, like the hall where the main celebration occurred later, was creatively transformed by Mrs. Uche Majekodunmi and her team from Newton & David, The ambience was indeed classy and cosy. As guests settled into their seats, they were serenaded by soft gospel music rendered by the choir of Emmanuel Chapel, Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos. Proceedings began when the officiating Ministers: Prelate Ola Makinde, Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu, Very Rev. Kanyisola Ajayi, SAN and other Pastors of Emmnauel Chapel were comfortably seated and then the celebrant stepped into the arena in style. Mrs. Adeagbo came to her special day looking glamorous in a figure-hugging understated green outfit that complimented her simple persona. She was obviously filled with indescribably joy as she was surrounded by her two daughters; Morenike and Modupe, husband, friends from way back, as well as close and dear family members. There was an opening prayer by an Emmanuel Chapel Pastor, and then, the service was taken over by a wonderful medley of popular Christian choruses by the Emmanuel Chapel Choir. The First Reading was taken by the celebrant while her daughter, Modupe Adeagbo took the Second Reading, this was just before Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu (Rtd), who has known Mrs. Adeagbo for over 20 year, was invited to deliver a short sermon. He began by applauding the celebrant for the decision to thank God on her birthday and went on to note that when he received the invitation, he was fascinated by the attributes of the celebrant that were highlighted there. These included: God-fearing, beautiful, faithful, gorgeous, supportive, wonderful,
fabulous, blessed, diligent, loving, trendy and joyful. Achbishop Ladigbolu noted that the celebrant should be thankful because God has spared her life long enough to celebrate her 50th birthday. He revealed that since their first meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State Nigeria on the day of their wedding thanksgiving, Mrs. Adeagbo has remained her same caring, cheerful and respectful self. He noted that he was inspired by the description of the celebrant on the invitation to also come up with his own words to describe using the first letter of her names: O-obedient, M-merciful, O-overcomer, Llovely, A-adorable, R-resourceful and A-amiable. That was not all, he continued: M-modest, O-omo Obembe, B-beautiful, O-omoluabi, L-lively, A-accommodating, affectionate and aya Opeyemi, J-jovial and Iindustrious. The man of God then broke into a song and urged the celebrant to reflect on all the past years, and ask herself if God had not been good to her? Reflecting on the past, he said, was the first look. As she was reflecting, which he noted was a good thing, Archbishop Ladigbolu stated that she should remember that there were things to confess and things to appreciate. He noted that she should not let the past hold her down because after having confessed, she had become free of any sin and was a new person. The second look the celebrant must take is the inward look, according to the man of God, who quoted Lamentations 3:4, Eph 5:1-2 and II Cor 13:5. Adding that after she has done this, she can change the things she would like to change and set her mind on the wonderful years ahead. Again, he broke into a song and this time, asked the celebrant to join him-and she did not hesitate for one second. Probably moved by her eagerness to thank God, the entire congregation was on its feet and they chorused to the spirit-lifting song. He rounded off by showering the celebrant and her immediate family with prayers. What could be described as the highest point of the service was when the superlative gospel singer and Pastor, Don Moen took to the keyboard, strummed some of his popular tunes and sang straight from the
the heart, captivating the congregation for minutes. The venue was transformed into a praise and worship centre that very moment, as guests sang along and were definitely in synch with the sought-after multi-instrumentalist and singer. His world class performance was a fitting finale to this segment of the celebration.
THE COCKTAIL
Immediately after the service, guests were ushered into a small area were canapes, cocktails and other assorted drinks were served. There was soft music wafting from the PA System. The atmosphere was cool and breezy. It was a very good opportunity for many to exchange banters, relax and recharge before moving to the main event.
THE BIRTHDAY RECEPTION
Wow! One cannot but exclaim when you step into the venue that the Adeagbo’s had selected to host this golden Jubilee reception and party. It was simply heavenly. From the ceiling to the floor, everything was well thought out. The lighting, the chandeliers, the fresh flowers, the draperies, the centrepieces all combined to present an elegant and enchanting feel. It was the golden lady’s arrival that marked the beginning of this segment. Adorning a gorgeous golden number, she danced into the ceremony escorted by her husband and daughters. The background music was provided by no other than Africa’s No. 1 Disc Jockey, DJ Jimmy Jatt. Opening prayer was by Archbishop Ladigbolu and after that, the reception took on a life of its own. It was planned to be fun and filled with turbo-charged excitement-and the organising team led by the celebrant’s husband, Foluso Adeagbo delivered big time. The Master of Ceremonies was top comedian, Gbenga Adeyinka 1st, who was at his professional best. He anchored the event smoothly and only dropped elevated jokes when necessary. It was Adeyinka who invited the celebrant and husband for a dance and a few lovey-dovey moments. He commandeered them to re-enact their wedding day and seal the moment with a kiss. It was all so hilarious. 33

He’s my soul mate. I think it was destined by God that we will be together, I am just so grateful. I love him so much. He is just a fantastic husband and a fantastic dad to our children. Later, joined by her family, she cut her lovely cake. The first-rate monarchs in attendance also joined the Adeagbo’s for a photo session as well as her close family and friends. Her daughter who had just graduated from a London University also used the occasion to cut her cake, one could see the joy that emanated from the faces of her parents. That session was rounded off when Mr. Kola Gbadamosi, her friend and birthday mate of many years joined her-and together with their spouses, cut the cake and smiled to the paparazzi. Again, Don Moen took centrestage and he revved up the tempo. His performance was gripping and inspirational. It was a surreal experience for many who were watching him perform for the very first time. That was not the only entertainer in the house, BJ Sax was on hand to titillate guests with his medley of songs. The Faith Band also gave a master class performance-and by far the show stopper was the surprise appearance of multiple award-winning Nigerian artiste, Dbanj. He electrified the venue for minutes. Guests could not resist the pull of his music. Smartly, he began with his old but popular songs and gradually worked everyone up to a crescendo and so, when he dropped his 2015 hit “Emergency”, everyone including the celebrant and her usually reserved husband danced with no inhibitions. Without any shadow of doubt, this was a milestone of a celebration, one that will be etched on many hearts for years to come.

THE CELEBRANT SPEAKS Days later we had a one-on-one interview with Mrs. Adeagbo at her Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos home You do not look an inch like a 50 year-old, how do you feel
First of all, I give thanks to the Lord for His mercies, because if not for Him, I won’t be like this, and I won’t be where I am today. A lot of my friends used to ask me, how do you look like this? Do you keep fit? Basically, I really don’t do a lot of exercise, I do go to the gym, maybe 2 or 3 days a week, but mainly I am involved in Pilate exercise. But God has been good to me. What was your 50th birthday morning like ? Did you wake up in the morning and ask God for anything in particular
On the eve of my birthday, which was on the 4th of August, we stayed awake till about 12 midnight. My mother in-law, my sister, my daughters, and my brothers in-law were around, so we prayed together when I officially reached my golden age. That prayer session was very important to me. 50th birthday is not actually to ask God for anything, to me, it is just to reflect on His goodness, and just to give thanks for what He has done in my life. And just to celebrate and enjoy myself with my friends, and I’m just so grateful for where I am today. That’s amazing. Now, you have mentioned giving thanks to God, I was going to ask why was it necessary to start your birthday with a thanksgiving service
Actually, I started my birthday on Wednesday the 3rd of August, and because I am very passionate about children, I just love them, and especially the less disadvantaged or privileged ones. So, on Wednesday, the 3rd of August, we went to an orphanage in Lekki, Lagos to see the children. We had a meal with them, we took a cake to them and spent time with them. That was the first thing I did for my birthday. The most important thing for me, just like I said was to give thanks. A lot of times, we keep asking God, we want this, we want that, but we should be grateful for what He has given us. So, I think it was very important for me to start with a thanksgiving, and give 34
thanks to my God. To thank Him for all the wonderful things he has done in my life. For my lovely children, my wonderful husband, my family and friends. It was a period of showing gratitude. You mentioned your husband and beautiful daughters. But one big question that has been popping on my head was Don Meon, whose idea was it.
Oh my goodness. You know, Don Moen has always been one of the people I admire. I will call him a role model, because as a young Christian, I listened to lots of his music. There are a lot of gospel artistes, but one thing that really fascinates me about Don Moen is that most of his songs are really about giving thanks, about being grateful for what you have, and this is what I loved listening to most of the time. And it has always been my dream to meet him one day. I have seen him on TV, I have listened to his music, my church will always sing praise and worship using Don Moen’s songs, and by the grace of God, my husband knows him. I didn’t actually ask for it, but my husband knew I love his music, and I was always playing it. So, he was the one that surprised me with Don Moen. It was awesome that he came to celebrate with me. What would you consider you highlight of the entire birthday, what was the one moment that stood out for you
So many highlights, to start with the praise and worship was fantastic, it was really good, the songs and the fact that everybody worshipped with me was great. And, when we had the reception, Don Moen again was fantastic, and then, Dbanj. I will tell you a secret, Dbanji too was actually a big surprise; I did not know Dbanj was going to be there at all How did they keep that away from you
I don’t know. The kids did it with their dad. I really love his music; I dance to it even though they used to tease me and say mummy you can’t really dance. I usually try my best (laughs heartily). So, I only knew he was going to perform when he was being introduced. It was so nice to go and meet him on stage. The other artistes who performed all entertained people very well. They all made the day extra special. Ok, let’s back track to some years ago, what was growing up like for you
I grew up in a big family. It is a family of about 10, and I was a middle child. It was a very close family, and my parents were very close. My dad was very loving, my mom was like a housewife, we just did everything together. It was a very happy childhood. My childhood was very fantastic.
Issue 169 A2_Layout 1 07/01/2017 12:55 Page 10
What about school? What kind of kid were you in school? Trouble maker, quite, brainy…
Very very quiet, I was a shy girl, I was really quiet right from my primary school to my secondary school and the university too. I am a very quiet person. So for those who don’t speak Yoruba, what do your names mean
‘Omolara’. ‘Omo’ is child and ‘Lara’ is like my family, so, that means “The child who is the foundation of the family. And Omobolaji, Again “Omo” means child and “Bolaji” means bearer of good things like wealth. I can say Omobolaji means the child who arrives amidst wealth. What fond memories of your childhood do you have and still cherish
So many fond memories, so many, and some of the ones I will never forget are with my dad. My dad wasn’t strict at all. My mum was the disciplinarian, because my father was a business man, he travelled a lot, and anytime he went away, we were always anxious for him to return, so we can all gather around the table and eat. We were all used to sitting around the table, eating together from the same bowl and sharing the meat. That united us and made us one big happy family. We all loved one another. It was just fun growing up in that family, with my dad, mum, and my siblings. Ok, what did you study
I did Philosophy at the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University. Why did you choose philosophy
I was going to study Law for my second degree. I did Philosophy because I believed that was a good stepping stone to Law. But God actually took over and after my Philosophy degree, I travelled abroad. And I developed other interests. Obviously, you have a very caring husband, how did you both meet? What’s the story
Oh my goodness! A long story…we met at the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University that was in 1985, I still remember, it was just like yesterday. I was in the Department of Philosophy, and Foluso was also in my University.
We met a couple of times but we really didn’t talk because I had my friends, and he had his own friends. So, all we just used to do was to say hello, hello to each other. It was therefore very strange the first time he came up to me. He didn’t even ask me out for a date, he just said; I want you to be my wife, “I want you to have my kids”. I was shocked! My first reaction was who is this joker, I thought maybe he wasn’t really serious that maybe he was just joking, and my response obviously was; “I’m sorry, No. I am not interested”. But obviously the man knew what he wanted and he went for it, and the rest is history. So, many years after, the love is still burning; everyone could see it on your birthday. How do you keep him still so
excited about you
The thing is we grew up together. I was very young when I met Foluso. Typically, he was my first boyfriend, we were very close, and even then, when we started dating, he was like my brother. So, when you’ve known someone for that long, it is natural that he would become my soul mate. When we are together, When I want to say something without opening my mouth, he knows what I want to say. So, I think it was destined by God that we will be together. I’m just so grateful, I love him so much. He is just a fantastic husband, and a fantastic dad to my children. Tell us about your two daughters
I will say what they don’t really like first, because the thing is that whenever we go out, maybe we go out shopping, everybody always says, we are three sisters 35

I thank God. I am so grateful for our beautiful daughters. Godfearing and obedient children. I keep telling them that the most important thing in life is putting God first in everything that they want to do.
travelling together. They always mistake us for sisters. And to me, that is a wonderful compliment, I will always say thank you. I love that. But the children are always quick to react and say, no she’s our mum, she’s not our sister (laughs heartily) I thank God. I am so grateful for our beautiful daughters. God-fearing and obedient children. I keep telling them that the most important thing in life is putting God first in everything that they want to do. Their education is very important to them. As you are aware one of them graduated a few months ago, and it was celebrated on my birthday and our other daughter, she is in New York. She studying at the New York University. They are pursuing their dreams, and I’m just so grateful to God for His blessings and for who they are. That’s amazing. We heard you live in the UK, what do you do when you are in Nigeria
I just relax basically. I just stay at home. I am trying to just settle into Nigeria, and start a business, because I would like to live in Nigeria again. I come back to spend time with Foluso. When I am here, sometimes, I just visit the Gabfol Lounge (at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport) that we own just to see how they are doing and basically I just enjoy being in Nigeria, just to be with my family and friends. That’s good. So, how do you balance work and home
To balance work and home is not an easy thing. But I must say, I am blessed to have my husband, who gives me peace of mind. He is not the kind of person that troubles you or that is always giving you headache. My life is stress free. So that makes it easy for me to juggle being a wife and a mother, and I thank God for him and for who he is. I like the fact that you mentioned that you like to relax, because people don’t take out time to relax as they should. So, what are some of your hobbies? What do you do when you want to relax
Most of the time when I want to relax, especially when I am in London, I love Pilate and yoga. So, I go 36
to the gym, I’m not really one who goes on the tread mill. I like group exercise, and when I do Pilate and do yoga, it is just to relax and to help me think, and reflect. Think of maybe like late in the evening of what your day has been like or what your plan is for the next day. Most of the time when we have the time, when my husband has the chance to escape the busy Lagos life, we do go on holidays as well, just to spend time together. So, are you living your dream now or is there something you wish you could change about life in general? Would you wish to be in a different country…
About life in general, I must say I love my life. I love my life, I’m happy with my marriage, I love our daughters, I love my in-laws, I am very content. I am happy with my life, but we will always have to look forward to doing something better to improve. Like I said, on the 3rd of August I went to the orphanage, to meet the less-privileged children, I was grateful, I thank God for what we have, but I would love to do more, because my background is in children, child care and education. So, anything to do with children I am all for it. I would love to do more, to support children, to volunteer, and just do other things to support the less-privileged. Ten years from now where would you like to be personally and business wise
Definitely back home in Nigeria, that’s definite. There is no doubt about that. Did you know we Nigerians are the happiest people in the world? Even if you go to the market, you will see people that don’t have much, but still wear smiles on their faces. The way they talk to you, and relate with you is so nice. But back in the UK, sometimes you don’t even see you neighbours for weeks. Maybe it is the weather
I’m not sure about the weather, but maybe you are right, because when the weather is nice, when we have sunshine, everybody just comes out and become different people entirely. I love my country, I love Nigeria, and I will love to be back here in ten years, and to invest here and to give
back to where I was brought up, where I was born. And business wise like I said, I want to set up something back here in Nigeria. Definitely, it will have something to do with children. So, what role would you say God has played in your life so far
Without God, who am I? Where would I be? He has played all the roles for me, I cannot even emphasis enough how grateful, how thankful I am, for the grace of God in my life. For all the favours, all His blessings. A lot of things happen and you don’t even know that maybe something has happened because God has taken control. So, I can’t but just say, thank God, I’m so grateful, I’m so thankful to God for my life and for our children, and husband as well. During your birthday, there was a portion of the programme that had words that described your attributes, how will you describe yourself in five words
God-fearing, trustworthy, obedient, loving, and caring That’s amazing. Is there anything you would like to say or advice you would like to give, just something to round off
Ok, I want to repeat what I have said throughout this interview, which is to give thanks to God. Thank you Lord, thank you Father for Your mercies. And to say a big thank you to all my family and friends who have been with me. They have been with my family, they have been with us throughout the highs and the lows, we’ve gone through a lot of things together. I would just say thank you, and I appreciate you all. And then, our daughters, I love you so much girls, thank you so much for supporting your mum, and my husband, Foluso, I am so grateful to God for bringing you to cross my path. I thank you and I love you so much, and I will continue to love you throughout the days of my life. And last but not the least, the OVATION Media Group, I thank you so so much, you’ve been with me through all this, I mean we’ve done a lot of events together, your team is so professional and competent, you are fantastic. I thank all those who made this celebration a success. Laughter and joy will

HUSBAND: FOLUSO ADEAGBO I have heard the phrase “Love at first sight but never thought I would ever fall in love with a lady I barely knew, just like that. But here I am, ready to spill the beans on how I was captivated by a young girl known and
addressed as Omolara Omobolaji Eninake Tosho-Obembe , as she then was. Sometime in 1985, I was climbing the stairs at the Department of Philosophy, Humanities Building of the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University. I took one good look at this paragon of beauty. She probably caught my strong and fixated stare. 39

We exchanged pleasantries. I noticed her shyness, but I was determined to break the ice. We had been meeting during lectures but barely talked. Omolara was never the outspoken type. Her taciturnity created a kind of mystique around her. On this fateful day, I was fully ready to profess my love and pour out my heart to Omolara. As she approached, I positioned myself on her path ready to get her attention. I stretched out my hands and held hers firmly. Believe me, I proposed to her instantly. “Omolara, I want you to marry me. Please be my wife and have my kids…” I’m sure she thought I was out of my mind or just playing some silly pranks. But I was dead serious. I don't know what got into me. Looking back today, I think we were both destined to meet and marry. I had no iota of doubt that here was my wife. It was a mission I needed to accomplish and there was no way anything or anyone was going to stop this spiritual union. Omolara looked at me and I could see that expressionless smile dancing around her face. I could not read her mind but whatever it was she was thinking, I just knew she was going to be mine sooner or later.
She became my project and I monitored her regularly. I watered my flower and watched her blossom. The more we met, the more I became addicted. Even after she left and was posted to Akure on national service, I travelled the distance to visit her. Today, I’m happy I made that effort to discover my diamond and jealously guard my precious stone. We grew on each other and she was ready to give me a chance. Surprisingly, I got to meet her exceptional parents and they encouraged us. They studied me and I’m sure they were eventually impressed with my conduct. I was in love and was ready to do anything to secure Omolara. God made it possible. We had a long courtship. Ours was not a rushed marriage. We started making our wedding plans around 1993 and walked down the aisle on January 22, 1994, at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Omofe, in Ilesa. It was grand and beautiful. My queen looked resplendent in her wedding dress. I felt on top of the world. The rest is history. I am richly blessed to have Omolara as my soulmate. Our lives witnessed galloping blessings. First,
our baby, Morenike, arrived on June 1, 1994, at the University College Hospital, London. We soon followed up with our second daughter, Modupe, on November 8, 1996, at the same hospital. We thank God always for our two babies who were brought up in the ways of the Lord. Omolara has been a peaceful companion and I believe this has contributed in no small measure to the successes we’ve recorded in our family. My sincere gratitude to Omolara’s parents who took me as their own son. A man who has a good wife has everything. Omolara is my world. I wish to rededicate myself to her and promise before God and man that I will forever love, treasure and protect her with everything it has pleased God to endow me with. I now believe in the truism that “as you lay your bed is how you shall lie on it”. Omolara, my love, congratulations and many happy returns. Life has just started for us and I pray we live very long to see our many generations to come DAUGHTER: MORENIKE ADEAGBO Mummy, I felt like there was no better way to show you how much I love you than through my words. 57

Life so far, has been full of multiple obstacles and without you, I am certain I would not be where I am today. You are not only my mother, but you are my friend. Somebody I can gossip with, but also somebody I can talk to and confide in. The number of times we have been mistaken for sisters has never failed to surprise me and I can only pray I look as youthful as you do when I reach 50. Through my 22 years of life, I have gone through countless phases and you have been with me every step of the way, to guide me and instruct me on what is best. As a mother, you realized that my happiness was what mattered first, and you have always been so selfless, in putting Dupe and I first in everything you do. Mummy, you are such a strong woman and I only aspire to be like you. You have an air of grace, which is refreshing to observe. Thank you for the life lessons and for teaching me how to become a respectful woman. Thank you for making me me, and please, never stop being you and continue to pursue your

desires. As you turn to this golden age of 50, may God continue to bless you and keep your mind at ease. May all your prayers be answered and may your soul remain evergreen. I love you so much. Mummy, Happy 50th Birthday!!! DAUGHTER: DUPE ADEAGBO Happy birthday to my wonderful mother. Words fail me when I try to sum up or explain what my mum means to me. A mother and daughter bond is a special relationship. She is a guide and support, someone to look up to and a woman to seek advice from. She has so many qualities that make her so great. Anyone who knows my mum will be aware of her extremely loving nature. She is such a gentle, kind-hearted and genuine woman. Growing up with her as my mother, I had the perfect role model and through her, I have learnt the true meaning of unconditional love. With my mum’s compassionate heart she makes a positive impact on everyone’s lies she is in. She has continuously supported me in everything I have done,
pushed me to reach my full potential and consistenly reminding me to put God first. One of my greatest achievements was being accepted at New York University. Having my mum’s continous support made it all possible. She travelled with me to exams, supported me with words of encouragement when I felt overwhelmed, she was there for me every step of the way. She has spent much of her life making sure her daughters dreams come true. A truly selfless woman. Mummy, you have reached 50 so gracefully. May God continue to bless you, give you good health and happiness for many more years. Happy 50th birthday mum. I love you so much. HER DAD: DADDY TOSHO-OBEMBE I congratulate you Lara my daughter, on this your birthday. May God preserve your life and may He elongate your years on earth. No matter how many more years I live now before I join my ancestors, may you live more than that, in good health and with peace of mind. Just as you have 59

achieved a lot of success to yourself and blessed in my lifetime. May all your children too become successful with great achievements in your lifetime too. May God grant you good health, grant your husband good health as well your children. May God grant your marriage, family and home a lasting blessing, and make you and your husband one till your very old age. So shall it be at the Lord’s command. Right from your birth through your growing up years, you have been exhibiting good character. You have been a great and pleasant child. God made you a very good child as well as unique, peculiar and distinguished. You never joked with your studies right from your early education till the University days, even after. sure I lack no good thing. Anytime you look at my face, without saying a word or making any sign, you already figure out what is going on with me. May your children take good care of you just as you have been taking care of me. You really show concern and care about me always and may your children do the same for you. May God grant you long life and you will not fall sick in Jesus name. I love you so much just as you do love me too. You have obviously and practically been exhibiting that love towards me. You and your husband have really been taking care of me. May God take good care of you both and may your children too take good care of you. Just as you have been successful in my lifetime, so shall your children too become successful in your lifetime. May your years be long. May you and your husband together as one, grow and live till very old age by God’s grace…Amen 61

MOTHER IN-LAW: LADY REBECCA MODUPE ADEAGBO To be fifty years is another great milestone in your life. Honestly speaking, you are a bold and courageous woman. You have been a loving wife to all of us. You live such an exemplary life that has positive effects on the lives of those around you. In a nutshell, you are a trustworthy and honest housewife. A woman of great integrity and a loving wife to the Adeagbo family. I wish you a happy birthday, and God's continuous blessings upon you and all that is yours. Your loving mother in-law. BROTHER IN-LAW: OLUFEMI ADEAGBO Ashley, the best…50 has arrived with blessing of grace, elegance, wisdom, wealth of family and health. We thank God for His mercies. We pray for many, many useful, happiness-filled and healthy years. It has been a long and worthwhile journey. I still remember the “Toasting Plans” hatched way back in Ile-Ife, as my one and only brother set his sights and his heart on the gentle, quiet mannered angel from Ilesa, exceptional judgment if you ask me. I remember the proceedings leading up to that special day and the ultimate dash to church in our blue designer suits. I still remember those hearty “Borrowdale” 64
meals…executed in a flash and always presented with the ultimate warmth as it is still today. I remember a lot of laughter, endless hours of chatter, political discussions. Just being tighter “gisting away” was, and, remains amazing fun, source of insights and reinforcement of your inclination towards good. And I remember moments when we have had to stand together without cracks. Like that night, many years ago, when we had to deal with would-be robbers in that layby they drove us into on our way from the airport. Your consistency, love and affection are standout qualities that are as rare as Grandidierite and as constant as the Northern star. Virtuous and with unimpeachable character, you have blazed a trail and are indeed a true blessing. 50 hearty cheers to my sister in-law, sister, and confidante. All my love. FEMI TEJUOSHO & FAMILY It gives me great pleasure to eulogise a great sister and wife to my “adopted brother” Mr. Foluso Adeagbo on the occasion of her 50th birthday. I have known Omolara for over two decades and I must say that she is an epitome of modesty, simplicity, humility and grace. In addition to being a strong pillar to her husband, she is also a fantastic mother to her
children and a true blessing to all of us her “Baba Oko’s”. I recall the days, about 18 years ago, when “Aunty Lara” volunteered to help out baby-sitting our eldest son, Adesoji on a regular basis, whilst my wife attended a training course. She was so wonderful to him that the boy never wanted to leave her presence. On many other occasions since then, she has contributed to being a truly remarkable sister, always showing genuine concern for the progress of my wife and children. On this occasion of your Golden Jubilee 1, on behalf of my wife Openifoluwa (your great fan) and our children wish you many more years in good health, continuing prosperity and long life. Cheers to a truly remarkable woman. HER FRIEND: MRS. BOLAJI MOMODU I met Omolara some 31 odd years ago, September 1985. This tall very slim and ebony-skinned lady walked into Room S7 Mozambique Hall of the Great University of Ife to occupy the 8th and last vacant bed as a fresher.. I, being the 7th and a fresher myself was too happy to see my kind. We introduced each other and we “gelled” almost immediately. Lara and I soon became inseparable and have remained good friends till

this day. Lara is the most introverted and easy-going friends I have ever had. I am certain most people at the University of Ife at the time will remember Lara as a power dresser. No one rocked the linen fabric like Lara. I remember the many parties we attended and the weekend trips to the 66
Obembe Mansion in Ilesha…the “Greatest Chase” I have witnessed in my life by Foluso (in pursuit of Lara’s heart), the story of which I will tell some other time… Lara, I am very delighted to call you my friend. May all the best things of life happen in your life. To my lovely friend, Queen Lele (as I fondly call her), I wish you a very happy 50th birthday. BJ Sax performing

THE COLOURFUL WEDDING OF
AISHA BELLO SALI AND ISHYAKU LABARAN Story: Emmanuel T. Edward Photo: Abraham Falodun
The lovely couple, Aisha Sali & Isyaku (Mijinyawa) Sani Labaran
THE KAMU NIGHT
T
he city of Abuja has distinctly etched a wonderful memory in the heart of Aisha Sali, the daughter of Alhaji Isa Bello Sali, onetime Head of Civil Service of Nigeria as she said her final goodbye to spinsterhood when she got married to her Prince Charming, Isyaku (Mijinyawa) Sani Labaran. The couple's fabulous nuptials unfolded in an exciting three-day ceremony held in three different cities with a massive assemblage of family and friends in a cosy and wellgarnished ambience. Amina and Sani met in a casual manner at the office where they both earned a living at the time. At the height of their busy schedules, the two strangers began to nurture a friendship that grew from common interests and in no time this evolved into a relationship. While Sani had charmed Aisha with his expression of love, Aisha on the other hand admired his easy-going mein and intelligence. The wholehearted attention of Sani on the Aisha daily melted her heart. Aisha, a delectable beauty with alluring persona merited the devotion of Sani; who had found a special place in her heart. As a public servant and graduate of Economics with a Master's degree in
International Business Administration, Aisha knew beyond any doubt that she had got the hots for Sani, a graduate of Physics and staunch politician - one who has had enduring years in lecturing at higher institutions. While Sani left the company his love for Aisha grew intense and neither of them failed to wish for the presence of the other. Days grew older and in the coming months Sani had already given to the dictates of his heart, as he gathered brave momentum to pop the big question. The lovey-dovey couple found joy, peace and happiness in a real-life fairy tale of romance. Like every other union, theirs soon came of age and they were ready to get married and start a life of their own in bliss. In a series of lavish festivities, the celebration of love played out in three different ceremonies packed with all the wonderful attractions and gripping tradition that brightly embodied the rich culture of the bride and groom. Our cameras captured the timeless moments in breath-taking pictures that aptly depict the splendor that reigned at the celebration of love.

beginning of everything that really mattered in the life of the bride. It was the beginning of her journey to matrimony-and she enjoyed every moment of this occasion from all indications. The city of Abuja was completely filled with colour that lovely evening. Gaily dressed guests arrived early to the Diamond Hall Events Centre, Kashim Ibrahim Way, where the ceremony was to hold. The hall was breath-taking, with rich blend of décor and colour that
made the all place sparkle. With friends and family seated in the cosy ambience of the hall, the event proper commenced with gallant entry of kids tastefully dressed in endearing traditional attires. Afterwards, the delectable bride in the company of her friends made their way into the hall in queenly gaits that saw every one applaud. Aisha’s friends gave her the essential support required to make her blush and smile her thanks. Shortly after their entrance, the ceremony which involves loads of

chandeliers stylishly hung from the ceiling, it all added to the beauty of the atmosphere. Like a queen that she is, the bride took elegant strides whilst making her way into the hall, alongside her friends. She rocked a blue/gold apparel with a gold necklace and a navy blue head gear. Her outfit complemented her lithe figure. It was an evening of pure culture, tradition, singing and dancing-and the Mothers of both families gave a wonderful account of themselves. The Mother’s night was true to its context, with several words of advice offered; Aisha was unquestionably armed to the teeth with marital dos and donts. Again, Mrs. Oyo-Ita had few words of advice to share with the young bride. Thereafter, Mrs. Rabi invited the bride, her mother and Mrs. Ita for the cutting of the cake. Guests were treated to mouth-watering delicacies and choice non-alcoholic beverages. Everyone ate to their fill after which the ceremony was brought to a close with a vote of thanks given by Dr. Mrs. Rabi “We are grateful beyond words that today’s programme was a huge success as well as the previous one. We only pray that Allah in His infinite mercy grant this newlywed all of their hearts desires”

entertainment and advice for the bride, reached its height when Nupe singers thrilled guests with a sweet medley. The night was also spiced with various performers. They took turns to thoroughly regale guests. It was so delightful to watch. Still the in lively mood, Mrs. Winifred Oyo - Ita, Head of Civil Service of the Federal Republic of Nigeria stole the moment to counsel Aisha on issues around marriage. It was indeed a memorable evening for the bride, Aisha.
THE MOTHERS’ NIGHT The popular city of Yola, the capital of Adamawa State was where the second ceremony tagged “Mother’s night” was held. There was no better place to host this celebration which was exclusively for women than the Oriental Harbor of Muna Hotels, Dougieri South, Jimeta. The hall was an imposing edifice, an intimidating sight but welcoming as well. The entrance of the hall was already well decorated, with rose petals gracefully laid on the radiant white underlay. While, royal
The wedding Fathia was the height and crowning rites of the wedding ceremony and it drew in dignitaries from far and near. It is usually the occasion where the couple are joined according to Islamic rites. The Palace of the Emir of Mubi played host to this usually religious and convivial ceremony. The doors of Mubi Palace was flung open and the Emir, HRH Abubakar Isa Ahmodu was there to personally welcome guests which included the state Governor, His Excellency, Bindo Umaru Jibrilla. The bride’s father, Alhaji Isa Bello Sali was very conspicuous throughout the occasion. The occasion was coordinated by Islamic clerics, and they also admonished the couple and their families on their various responsibilities in a marriage setting. The ceremony reached a crescendo with the payment of the Mahr, which represents the solemnization of the bride and groom’s family-usually done with a token. This case the amount mentioned was N100,000. Afterwards, the bride and groom were officially declared as husband and wife by Iman Mohammed Hamis. With all matters sorted out, guests were well feted by the couple’s families and everyone went home thoroughly satisfied. No wonder all those we spoke with had good wishes for the couple. 71

Q
uiet birthday celebrations are usually unheard of among the cream of Nigerian society. It comes as no surprise then that the richest woman in Africa, Mrs. Folorunso Alakija pulled all the stops to ensure her birthday was celebrated with as much fanfare as possible. Not only that, the indefatigable Society Lady, tripled the joy on this occasion with the celebration of her 40 years in marriage and the launch of her inspirational books on the same day. The philanthropist and owner of Rose of Sharon foundation, appeared many years younger than her age, a glaring evidence that she is not only a successful woman in the world of business but also a successful home maker. A devout Christian, she ensured that before anything else, God tooks centre stage as the celebration kicked off with a church service at the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, Lagos where family and friends from different parts of the world gathered to thank God for her life. The order of Holy Communion and thanksgiving were done with the usual doctrines of the Anglican Church while melodious hymn were rendered by the church choir. Many people testified to her wonderful attributes which were worthy of emulation and prayed for her continued success. The Alakijas spent time dancing and praising God in the course of the event. Rose of Sharon
Glorious Ministry International Choir provided extra-special songs that also gladdened the hearts.of the congregation. After the church service, guests made their way to The Ballroom, Lagos Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island for a grand reception. From the entrance to the interior of the hall everything was magnificent. Life size portraits of the beautiful 65 year old celebrant were spotted at strategic corners of the venue. Everywhere was sparkling with a touch of crystal gold; the glass chandeliers, the accessories on the chairs and tables were all beautifully laid out by Victoria F events. It was a thorough display of finesse expected of a multi-billionaire of her class. Guests in resplendent and exquisite outfits occupied almost all the seats, the venue was packed full, an evidence of the love and respect that the Alakija family commands. The comperes, Koffi and Helen Paul really did a good job as guests were not bored for a second. It was no doubt fun and laughter all through. The birthday girl, being the cynosure of all eyes, beamed gorgeously with smiles in her amazing dress made by Lanre da Silva-Ajayi while a documentary on her success story was played on the giant screens. The businesswoman, who had announced at several occasions that she is a lover of fashion, wore two stunning outfits in the course of the celebration.

Guests were thoroughly entertained by Faith Band. They trilled till very late into the night. Mrs. Alakija started her career in 1974 as an Executive Secretary at Sijuade Enterprises, Lagos, Nigeria. She made her mark in the fashion industry as the President of Fashion and Designers Association of Nigeria, FADAN. Her label, Rose of Sharon metamorphosed into Rose of Sharon Prints and Promotions; then Digital Reality. To show that the celebrant’s philanthropic exploit was no fluke. Some guests went home with lot of gifts after playing a creative game which was all her idea. Guests were treated with sumptuous list of meals by Abilar Catering, all one needed to do was to place 86
an order from the menu placed on every table, and bang, you had it. As guests were having a good time in the venue, the celebrant launched her inspirational books, which was reviewed by Pastor Shola Adesoye. She presented six wonderful and amazing books in wonderful colours. Some of the titles are; 'Folorunso Alakija Speaks', which contains her words; 'His name is' which reveals the different names of God in different languages, and then there were 'Wish for it? ‘Pray for it' and many others. Her husband, children, grandchildren and special guests joined the unveiling as the books were presented to the world. The event also saw many forms of entertainment. There were thrilling performances by the Soloist, Ms.
Elsie Otto. The impressive performance of Oyinbo Jesu got everyone amazed based on the fact that she is a white woman who sings basically Yoruba gospel songs. After the cutting of the cakes, members of Rose of Sharon Foundation which enjoy the full sponsorship of the Alakija family took centre stage to thrill guests. The party was top-notch as Captains of Industry, big wigs, political elites, and more were spotted everywhere. They included Senate President’s wife, Mrs. Toyin Saraki, Sen. Florence Ita-Giwa, former Cross Rivers State governor, Donald Duke and wife, Onari, wife of Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, wife of former Lagos State Governor, Dame Abimbola Fashola, Imo State Governor’s wife, Mrs. Nneoma Nkechi Rochas Okorocha and many others.

CELEBRATES ND BIRTHDAY WITH POMP Story: Michael Effiong & Funmi Adeyemi Photo: Ken Ehimen & Family Album
I
t was another wonderful session of thanks giving and an expression of gratitude for Esama of Benin Kingdom, Sir (Chief) Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion when he celebrated his 82nd Birthday in the ancient City of Benin, Edo State. The family had referred to the Patriarch of the House of Igbinedion as an oak and a legendary octogenarian, and there is no gainsaying the fact that he had stood the test of time, touched many lives and put smiles on many faces. In a write-up in the official birthday programme, Mr. Michael Edo-Ogie, Historian to the House of Igbinedion began by briefly presenting a poem about the famous Oak Tree by Johnny Ray Ryder Jnr “A mighty wind blew night and day. It stole the Oak Tree’s leaves away”. Then snapped its boughs and pulled its bark until the oak was tired and Stark. But still the Oak Tree held its ground while other trees fell all around. The weary wind gave up and spoke ‘’How can you still be Standing OAK? The Oak Tree said, ‘’I know that you can break each Branch of mine in two, carry every leaf away, shake my limbs and make me sway. But I have roots stretched in the earth growing stronger since m y birth. You will never touch them, for you see they are the deepest Part of me. Until today. I wasn’t sure of just how much I could endure. But now I’ve found with thanks to you. I’m stronger than I ever knew.’’

And he continued “Just as the Oak Tree is unlike any other tree in it’s habitat, so is Chief Igbinedion different from any other person around him (humility, wealth, pedigree and power not withstanding). The oak tree is universally acknowledged as a symbol of strength, endurance and longevity. “He is the oak tree, he is the leviathan, the phoenix, the titan, the lion of Okada, the oracle, the sage, the proverbial cat with Nine lives, the exemplary pathfinder, the visionary investor, the avatar, the legendary octogenarian, quintessential philanthropist consummate business man, iconic leader, mentor and benefactor to thousand sof his fellow men and women. He is a towering nationalist, statesman, patriot, bridge builder and leading light in the vanguard of national unity and above all, a very rare husband and doting father, grandfather and great grandfather” Born in the year 1934 in the obscure farming community of Okada (now the University-town and headquarters of Ovia North East Local Government, Edo State of Nigeria) to the late Road Overseer and iconic community leader, Josiah Agharagbon Igbinedion (who founded Okada Town
and his amiable wife, the late Madam Okunoze Igbinedion of the famous Ihaza Chieftaincy Family of Usen, Ovia South West LGA in Edo State), the little boy who was named Gabriel Osawaru rose from those humble beginning to the giant of man, an internationallyrecognized businessman that he has become. His 82nd birthday celebrations tagged “Igbinedion the great – Celebrating the Abundance of God’s Grace’’ began with a Morning Dew Service at the Palatial Igbinedion Mansion, Benin City with the famous hymn,“Blessed Assurance” followed by an opening prayer, by Rev. Dr. Omo Okundaye. As has been the norm for decades, the week-long celebrations began with courtesy visits but hit a high tempo with his birthday thanksgiving which was an inter-denominational service and was attended by Men of God from far and wide. That was not all, an evidence of his immense impact on the lives of people was the fact that hundreds gathered at his palatial home very early that morning to honour the Great Esama. Apart from prayers from the men of God present, there was a session of praise and worship by various Church choirs. It was really soul-lifting and spiritually stimulating.

It was the President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Dr. Felis Omobude that delivered the sermon. Where he praised the celebrant for his love for God and his penchant for always putting God first in his life. Dr. Omobude stated “Riches and wealth is a gift from God. As you woke up this morning, you took your bath and you are well dressed. It is a blessing from God because there are many far younger than you who cannot lift their bodies when they are awake. Chief Igbinedion, I salute you. You are indeed a great man. The book of Isaiah says, ‘but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint’,” This has been your story, and the Lord will continue to bless you”. The sermon over, the celebrant and family

were then invited to the front of the arena where they were showered with prayers by all the men of God present. There were some goodwill messages before the celebrant’s eldest son, former Governor of Edo State, Chief Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion delivered a very warm thank you speech on behalf of the House of Igbinedion. The service was formally brought to an end by Pastor Osarenren Ighiwi who delivered the closing prayers. Later, Chief Igbinedion, his lovely wife, Lady Cherry Igbinedion, surrounded by their close family and friends cut his 82nd birthday cake to the glory of God. Of course, as usual, Chief Igbinedion was at his hospitable best, guests had lots to eat and drink, there was good quality musical entertainment and without any doubt, everyone had a very wonderful time.

here was an overwhelming ovation for OVATION Publisher and Chief Executive Officer of OVATION Media Group, Bashorun Dele Momodu when he received a Honorary Doctorate Degree (Honoris Causa) from the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA). The event, which was graced by His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana, took place at the university’s campus in Accra. The award of Momodu’s Honorary Doctorate degree also marked the commemoration of the institution’s 8th Congregation Ceremony and it was historic because he would be the first non-Ghanaian to so honoured. The university management said it selected Bashorun Momodu in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the world of business, politics, literature and the media industry as well as his dogged commitment towards projecting the best of Africa to the world. Delivering a speech after he was decorated by the University’s Pro-Chancellor, HRM Drolor Bosso Adamtey I, Bashorun Momodu who was the sole honoree for 2016, thanked the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joshua Alabi and the Governing Council of UPSA for singling him out for such a great honour. He recalled with nostalgia, his first contact with Ghana exactly twenty-one years ago when he fled Nigeria under the brutal dictatorship of the late General Sani Abacha for exile in the United Kingdom. “I succeeded in crossing through a smugglers’ route into Cotonou, Benin Republic. I was too scared to stay too long in Cotonou and so decided to meander my way to Lome, Togo. Since I couldn’t speak any smattering of French, my best and ultimate destination was Ghana. I crossed the border at Aflao and waltzed my way to Accra that evening… I departed Ghana on the night of July 28, 1995, and landed at London Gatwick on July 29. Ghana remained permanently etched in my mind. I dreamt of a day I would be able to return to the tranquility of Accra.” “It was exile that miraculously gave birth to OVATION International magazine… Our Board decided on a few pertinent projections. We will promote Africa and debunk the malevolent
prejudices against our continent. We will celebrate the beauty of Africa and encourage social and business interactions amongst our people. We shall produce a world class magazine that would be the pride of Africans at home and abroad. We decided to concentrate all attention on West Africa before spreading out to other regions. Nigeria and Ghana became our priority countries. “Before my first and forced trip to Ghana, I had encountered the old Gold Coast on the pages of literary works by The Osagyefo, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Kofi Awoonor, Ayi Kwei Armah and company. I was particularly enthralled by the seminal work of Nkrumah and the thesis propounded in his book Africa Must Unite. Nkrumah introduced me and got me addicted to panAfricanism though I had read pan-Africanist and Negritude works by Walter Rodney, Frantz Fanon, Chinweizu, Amilcar Cabral, Nwalimu Dr. Julius Nyerere, Leopold Sedar Senghor and others. I was exceptionally touched by Dr Nkrumah’s vision and was particularly convinced that Africa would never make appreciable progress unless Africans can join hands and lift themselves up. “It was with great delight that I received a refreshing letter from the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA) announcing the award of a Doctorate Degree (honoris causa) to be bestowed on me at the 8th Congregation ceremony of this prestigious institution today. I am truly honoured and full of gratitude to the ViceChancellor, Professor Joshua Alabi and members of the Governing Council of the institution for such a wonderful gesture”. He also used the opportunity to praise Ghana President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama for “ The rare leadership he has provided as President as he continues to illuminate the path of many, touching lives, breaking borders, setting new records and charting the course of a new brand of 105

development that is not only exceptional but also visible and tangible. Sir, permit me to say that your calmness, simplicity, humility, passion and devotion to public service continue to demonstrate the stuff that truly great leaders are made of. History will be kind to you”. In his speech at the event, President of Ghana, His Excellency, John Dramani Mahama cited three reasons he decided to attend the 8th Congregation Ceremony of UPSA, one of which he said was to honour Momodu whom he described as a great journalist and a respected African personality. “My third reason for being here this morning is to honour a great
journalist and a respected African personality in the person of Chief Dele Momodu. I do this for his outstanding contribution to both national and international discourse, his strong personality, his vision, his perseverance and his strength in the face of adversity.” The University of Professional Studies (formerly known as Institute of Professional Studies) was founded in 1965 as a private professional business education tuition provider. The university was the first and is still the only public institution with the mandate to offer both academic degrees and provide training for higher professional education in Ghana.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS CELEBRATE THE LIFE OF
MRS. DORCAS OMOLE IN OSUN STATE Story: Eric Elezuo Photo: Segun Lawal (Iroko)

etter is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof’ is a popular biblical saying that typifies the glorious journey home of Mrs. Dorcas Moninuola Omole, whose family and friends turned up in their numbers to celebrate and thank God for her life. Mrs. Dorcas Moninuola Omole ended her earthly sojourn on February 26, 2016 and her family spared no expense to ensure that she had a worthy and befitting burial. The devout Christian’s journey to the great beyond began at the St John’s 122
Cathedral, Iloro, Ilesa. As expected, the church service was quite solemn because Madam Omole was well loved during her life time. That notwithstanding, it was also an occasion to celebrate because the departed, who was confirmed to have lived a pious life, was heaven-bound. Biblical readings took centre stage, and were punctuated by few words from those who were close to “mama” as she was fondly called. There were a few things that everyone seemed to remember about her, and that was the fact that she

Shortly after the church service, a long convoy of family, friends and wellwishers conveyed her remians to the cemetery where she was interred. AT THE REGAL CORONATION OF
NEW OBA OF BENIN

F
or four whole weeks, the ancient city of Benin Kingdom, Edo State literarily stood still as Crown Prince, His Royal Highness, Eheneden Erediauwa carried out all the necessary rites that led to his eventual coronation as the Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku’ Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, the new Oba of Benin, As part of the final activities lined up for the ceremony, the monarch began his foot procession from his Edaiken Palace in Uselu, Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, to Oredo. It was a very colourful and cultural occasion that was witnessed by hundreds who lined both sides of the streets. This ceremony proved to be what every Bini son and daughter had been waiting for as they all wore infectious smiles and rendered chants of joy as the monarch and his entourage walked across towns and villages showcasing his agility and ability to be the people’s monarch. On the line up to catch a glimpse of this great event were Benin chiefs, traditional groups and societies, women, youth groups, various cultural groups and of course local and foreign tourists. Their joy knew no bounds. The Monarch was escorted throughout by Uselu people on his journey back to Benin City, during which he stopped at a historical palm tree named "Udin ama-mieson aimiuwa" (meaning "work before pleasure"), which the Edaiken "climbs" symbolically. Thereafter, the Uselu chief in the procession took leave of the Edaiken and returned to Uselu while he was escorted into the centre of Benin 128
Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole presenting staff the of office to new Oba of Benin
by Oredo Chiefs, where he stayed for three days to hold private ceremonies. The new king thereafter, picked the title of 'Oba Ewuare II' after Oba Ewuare, the first Monarch of the Benin Empire, who reportedly ascended the throne between 1180 and 1300 AD. Ewuare was seen by many as one of the greatest Obas of Benin Kingdom. Ewuare II ascended the throne after his father, Oba Erediauwa, who was born in 1923, to Oba Akenzua II. Oba Erediauwa joined his ancestors in April 2016. A crowd of enthusiastic people later escorted the Oba from Usama Palace to Orho-Okpata in Benin. As it is the tradition, the Oba walked through Ore-oghene and stopped by at the Oloto Palace, the home of one of the seven chiefs that usually perform the coronation ceremony at dawn. The Oba thereafter visited a shrine at Iwehen junction to pay homage according to tradition. Then he walked through Ibiwe and later arrived at UrhoOkpota where his coronation was officially performed by Chief Oliha of Benin. The traditional ceremony over, the new Oba was then ready for the statutory presentation of his staff of office which was done within the grounds of the Oba of Benin Palace, located in the ancient city by Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. Around to witness this event included Forbes-listed African Richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II

hen credible universities are established, there is every possibility that they will be breeding first class products capable of holding their own in the society, and so is the story of Chrisland University, Abeokuta, Ogun State. Recently, the A-list school held its maiden public lecture titled “Private universities: The Credible Path to True Intellectual Freedom, Innovation and National Development” with seasoned administrator and convener of the People’s Conscience Forum, Professor Pat Utomi, as the Guest Lecturer under the Chairmanship of Dr Christopher Kolade. A number of prominent Nigerian leaders including HRH Oba Olusanya Adegboyega Dosunmu, Olowu of Owu foremost educationists, technocrats, heads of tertiary institutions and captains of industry were on hand to support the occasion.
Also present was His Excellency, the Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun who was Chief Host, as well as his Deputy and representatives of other Governors. The participants at the lecture gained insight into the role of tertiary education, particularly, the private universities in setting the appropriate and most innovative agenda for resolving the developmental challenges of Africa. In his lecture, Prof. Pat Utomi noted that if the nation must find its way back to the basics, the universities have a great role to play. “To reclaim Paradise lost, I have no doubt that the universities have a critical role to play. Given our current realities, much of that will be from private universities, even though a critical role remains for state owned or supported universities,” he said.

emarkable words were said at the launch of Nigeria’s pioneer educational toy provider, Ethan & Harriet, which has its sole aim promoting Nigeria’s cultural heritage through fun and games. The official product launch, which was held at the banquet hall, Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, began with the elegant arrival at the red carpet of former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and the former Governor of Cross River State, former Governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke. The red carpet session was hosted by Denrele Edun and Amira Ibrahim-Alfa, while Chigurl and Layole cocompered the event.
The launch of Ethan & Harriet products, "Lift N Learn Magnetic Puzzle" and "Family Floor Nigeria Puzzle", was fun and entertaining as guests were pamp;ered with drinks, food and engaged with various activities. An interesting part of the event was when four volunteer guests were asked to re-arrange the map of Nigeria on the jigsaw puzzle. None of the volunteers could successful complete the puzzle before the time allotted, which further buttressed the point Ethan and Harriet was trying to make- that we need to be more conversant with our history. Ethan & Harriet, creates interactive Nigerianthemed puzzles for children and adults. In the process
of utilising these products, the users get to learn more about the country’s geography and many more. The Ethan & Harriet Founder/CEO, Bunmi Williams, in her speech said: “We have spotted a disconnect between many Africans and their heritage and a lack of knowledge as it pertains to African history being passed on to children. Ethan & Harriet intends to bridge this gap by educating children through toys, which would in turn impart knowledge about African history in an engaging and appealing manner”. Also, the product's Chief launcher and former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, said: “This is a product that will impact everybody; young, old, men 139

and women; what they need to know about their country, each state and what they produce or what they are known for. It is a learning material for children, teenagers, adults and teachers as well. On his part, former Governor of Cross Rivers State and the products’ Chief Reviewer, Donald Duke, stated that Ethan and Harriet’s vision will reignite the cultural acumen of most Nigerians and Africans at large. And that ‘corruption’ of Nigeria’s traditional heritages by penchant for foreign culture do not augur well for the development of the country. Former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Erelu Olusola Obada in her own contribution, said: “It is a very good step
in the right direction, because our children need to know about our culture and their heritage and what the country used to be. I think this product is very educational. If it is introduced into the school curriculum, it is going to be very fantastic and exciting." The grand launch was attended by several stakeholders in the Nigerian government and educational sector including Barclays Ayakoroma who represented Alhaji Lai Muhammad, Minister of Information and Culture; Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, Director-General, Office of Education Quality Assurance, Lagos State Ministry of Education and among others.

THE LIVELY TRADITIONAL WEDDING BETWEEN
OLUWASEUN BANKOLE-BALOGUN AND ADESEUN OGUNDOYIN Story: Jesuloluwa Adebiyi Photo: Abraham Falodun
I
t was an admixture of colour, culture and class when Oluwaseun Oluwadamilola Bankole-Balogun and Adeseun Adeniyi Ogundoyin hosted their traditional wedding at the Civic Centre, Lagos. The event began with the opening prayer by Amb. Moses Ihonde who was the Chairman of the occasion. Thereafter, the coordinators of the event kick started the ceremony. The coordinators popularly called in Yoruba: Alaga Iduro and Alaga Ijoko were there to do the bidding of both families. Alaga Ijoko was Folake Oshinowo of LTV (Shokoyokoto) and the Alaga Iduro was the popular Sir Kay. After the opening prayer, the guests were asked to observe a minute silence for the father of the groom, late Pa Ogundoyin. As it is the norm, while the bride’s mother, Mrs. Oluwakemi Salvage Ogundoyin and members of her family were comfortably seated, the groom’s parents were invited into the arena. They did not just stroll in, they danced excitedly to the delight of all. They then began to exchange pleasantries before making their way to their seats. While all the introductions were going on, the Shuga Band were entertaining the guests with good quality music The song performed by the band at this time was a narration of the proposal 142
of the groom to the bride. The journey of how Adeseun proposed, and how Oluwaseun fell in love and accepted to be his wife rent the air. Sir Kay, who was the coordinator from the groom’s family, brought the letter of proposal and it was read by the bride’s younger sister, Morenike after which prayers were offered. The groom then made his grand entry with his friends and was led in by the Alaga Iduro. Again Shuga Band added spice to that segment by giving the groom and his entourage excellent background music to make their entry more fun-filled. As it is the norm, he prostrated in front of his in-laws and was later showered with prayers by them and his parents. In no time, he was ushered to a special seat where he had to wait for his beautiful bride. Then the bride, accompanied by her friends and led by the Alaga Ijoko danced into the hall with excitement. The bride really displayed her dance steps as her friends cheered. Shortly a session couple went before both parents for another round of parental blessings. The reception commenced shortly after the prayers and D.J., Larry was on hand to thrill everyone. The reception was rounded off with a vote of thanks by the groom’s younger brother.

THE BLISSFUL WEDDING OF
EVIOGHENE WILLIAMS AND JOHNSON ETA-EYO Story: Jesuloluwa Adebiyi Photos: Ken Ehimen
I
t was a day of immeasurable joy for the Williams and Eta-Eyo families as their children, Evioghene Omorobe and Johnson, tied the nuptial knots at a lively ceremony inside the Foursquare Gospel Church, Surulere, Lagos. Proceedings kicked into gear with the bridal march when the bride’s father, top Entertainment personality, Opa Williams walked arm-in-arm into the church hall with his daughter. Of course the entire congregation was on its feet as the sang the popular hymn, “Great is Thy Faithfulness” 148
Senior Pastor, TBC Foursquare Gospel Church, Rev (Mrs.) ‘Lola Olakulehin, soon delivered the opening prayer and the joining of this two love birds was in full gear. In her sermon, Pastor Olakulehin talked about the importance of marriage, revealing the fact that God is the initiator of marriage and that marriage is to be enjoyed not endured. She encouraged the couple to put God first at all times. She, it was, who eventually cemented Evioghene and Johnson as man and wife to the delight of the entire congregation.
THE RECEPTION
Despite the fact that it was a rainy afternoon, the reception venue, V.Gini’s Centre was packed to capacity, which was testimony to the fact that the Williams and Eta-Eyo families were well loved. The reception was fun-filled and guests had loads of fun. The event was lit up with the presence of some Nollywood personalities. They had obviously come to share this joyful moment with Mr. Opa Williams who had nurtured and mentored many comedians with his brand “Night of a Thousand Laughs” and also produced many exciting movies over the years.

The Abass family
Tribute by Omotola Ashiru
“
He overcame many obstacles in his life time. No one will know the pain I feel for this great loss.’’ hose were the words that were engraved in the heart of Olajuwon Abass, son of Otunba Lekan Abass, politician, socialite and influential member of All Progressives Congress (APC), as a result of the fatherly care and love he enjoyed before his father answered the call to glory. The news of Abass’ departure sent shockwaves to his family, friends and associates, most especially the Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajumobi. Tears flowed freely during the solemn ceremony. In honour of the late socialite, a Christian wake keep was held at St. Anne’s Church, Molete, Ibadan, where family, friends and associates gathered to pay their last respect to a man who touched many lives.

Funeral service also took place at the same venue. The atmosphere was sad and painful. An indication he will be sorely missed. The funeral service began when his remains were received by the Officiating Minister, His Grace, the Most Reverend (Dr.) J.O Akinfenwa, assisted by Ven Collins O. Babalola and the Reverend Canon Yemi Alade. An opening prayer set the ceremony in motion. During the sermon, Most Reverend Akinfenwa commended the efforts of the deceased during his lifetime. Speaking on the theme “The Future Is Here, Earlier Than We Thought”, Prof. Osinbajo observed that investing in key technological innovations is critical to the scientific growth and expansion of Nigeria. “Multi-skilling is required in the future of today because, in the nearest future, robots will take over jobs
in the country. You have to be innovative in your thinking and ideas,” the Vice President said. AISHAT OLASUNKANMI WEDS OLAMILEKAN AYILARA IN LAGOS
Story: Funmilayo Adeyemi Photo: Segun Lawal
L
ord you have created us in love. You have infused your love into us and with your love we have chosen ourselves. May your love see us through in this bond of ours in your love, and we pledge our faithfulness to each other.” These words were the toast of the lovebirds, Aishat Abimbola Olasunkanmi and Olamilekan Ayilara, when they made public their love for each other. There was no looking back for Abimbola and Olamilekan when they started dating in June, 2013. They met two months earlier by chance through a mutual friend. Afterwards, they exchanged numbers and started seeing each other. After several outings and chatting via social media, the duo became five and six. It was then that Olamilekan was convinced that he had really found his missing rib; he organized an intimate get together party at the beach where his beau was also invited. It was there that he proposed to his heartthrob, Abimbola. After the proposal, the wedding plans began. The duo did not settle for less as they went the extra miles to shop at Lily West for their wedding needs. Then the day came with a pot pouri of activities
which began with the all important Nikkai ceremony that flowed easily into a traditional marriage at Martins Multi-purpose Event Solution Centre, Plot 1 Otunba Jobi-Fele way, Alausa, Ikeja. The Nikkai ceremony kicked-off with praises of Allah, and the Muslim confession of faith “There is none worthy of worship except Allah and Muhammad is His servant and messenger” was declared. Three Quranic verses (Quran 4:1, 3: 102, 33:70-71) and one prophetic saying (hadith) was also read for all present. Afterwards, the marriage rites began as the groom’s best man gave out a praying kettle, prayer mat and Quran to the groom’s father, Mr. Ayilara to present to the bride’s father, top TV broadcaster, Olasunkanmi as part of the rites. Afterwards, the duo was pronounced husband and wife. As part of Islamic injunctions on marriage, the Imam, Sheikh Qonoirdeen urged the couple to live a life of piety, and show love and kindness to each other. He further described what is expected from Olamilekan as the head of the family as well as Abimbola’s role, buttressing his points with some verses from the Holy Quran.
The Nikkai ceremony was rounded off with prayers (Dua) for the new couple, their respective families, the local Muslim community, and the Muslim community at large (Ummah) by the officiating minister, Sheikh Qonoirdeen. Thereafter, traditional wedding ceremony took centre statge. As tradition demands, both families quickly got to know each other a bit closer as preparations were put in place to formally receive the groom. It was not long afterwards when the groom made his triumphant entry into the arena, amidst singing, drumming and dancing by his friends and wives of the family. He followed up his arrival by prostrating for his in-laws, and the two families stretched out their arms in acceptance to pray for him before he took his seat awaiting his gorgeous queen. Olamilekan did not wait for long when beautiful Abimbola danced in accompanied by her friends and some family members. She then knelt before her parents, who prayed and blessed her before taking off her veil and presenting her to the husband. On getting to her charming prince, 165

Abimbola knelt before him in respect and obedience with glitter in her eyes while prayers were said for both of them. Olamilekan then carried his lovely queen up for everyone to see, in a show of ability to protect to her. The elated couple was easily the cynosure of all eyes with both partners stepping out in superlative traditional garbs befitting for the special occasion, expressing the fact that they were both very well prepared for the glorious day. After the traditional marital rites had been observed by all present, the fun flight landed in a grand reception.
The reception was distinctively mesmerizing. Ace thespian, Adewale Elesho, who anchored the event, kept throwing light jokes that enlivened the mood of the guests while Sharp Band thrilled the guests with breath-taking music. Food and drinks were aplenty as people had a jolly time. The groom, Olamilekan, then gave the vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ayilara, his parent in-laws, Mr. & Mrs. Olasunkanmi and friends for their support on the success of the wedding. 167

nly the valiant knows the honour of losing and the joy of winning. Only the victorious knows love because it is in the realm of love that first battles are fought. One man has been in the battle of life and can hold his head high and say that he has conquered, and defeat was not part of his trajectory is Mr. Phillips Oduoza, the outgoing Group Managing Director of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc. Mr. Oduoza has been replaced by Mr. Kennedy Uzoka at the “Africa’s Global Bank” bowed out in style and many ceremonies were held to bid him a resounding farewell. There was the launch of a book titled; "Dynamics of the Nigerian Financial System", which was tagged "Essays in honour of Phillips Oduoza". Oduoza, who has served two terms piloting the activities of UBA Plc in the last six years, has been known for his great job of consolidating UBA’s position as a leading bank in Africa, with operations in 19 African countries and three global financial centres;
Chief Launcher, Mr. Leo Stan Ekeh
New York, London and Paris, offering banking and financial services to over seven million customers The book, which contains 30 chapters, attracted contributions from scholars in the banking and finance sector of Nigeria and abroad was edited by Professor of Strategic Studies and Business Diplomacy of University of Lagos, Micheal M. Ogbeidi, and reviewed by Head of Department for Business Administration, UNILAG, Prof. Kuye Owolabi Lateef. The book, according to the Editor, was meant to give knowledge to a large number of people who know little about Nigeria’s financial system. in very simple, every day English The launch was attended by such personalities as Mr. Oduoza’s boss, Chairman, UBA and Heirs Holding, Mr. Tony Elumelu, Chairman/CEO, Zinox Technologies, Mr. Leo Stan Eke, former Managing Director of Diamond Bank, Mr. Emeka Onwuka and the Chairman of the occasion was businessman, Mr. Emmanuel Ijewere.
According to the book, Mr Oduoza drove United Bank of African (UBA) through the raft of tough regulatory measures put in place by the Central Bank of Nigeria with the resultant effects of regulatory induced reduction in income lines and increase in funding costs, to profitability. Mr. Phillips Oduoza, a University of Lagos Civil Engineering graduate would be mostly remembered as the man who returned the bank (UBA) to its glorious days as UBA was able to reverse a loss position of N1.94 billion in 2010 when he took over the saddle to making a profit of N48 billion in 2014. After that afternoon’s speeches, a classy dinner was later hosted in his honour to round off what has been a wonderful career at UBA. The event was attended by the cream of the banking committee and the top echelon at UBA. His lovely wife, Jumai was there by his side all the step of the way to savour this wonderful occasion. 169

t is true that the diligent ones surely stand the chance of dining with kings and queens. Not only that, carving a niche for themselves, they draw the high and mighty to their sides. The story is typical of Juju maestro and legend, King Sunny Ade, who no doubt has set a pace for himself in the music industry having been nominated for Grammy Awards twice. He was actually the first African nominated for the prestigious Grammy Awards. A pace which other African artistes have since followed! Sunny Ade’s dexterity, industry, achievements and down-to-earth attitude was the attraction when family members, friends, colleagues and associates gathered at The Haven Place, Ikeja, to celebrate with him as he struck 70 hearty years. It was a night of music, glitz and glamour as everyone sought to undo one another in an atmosphere of extreme glamour
and happiness. The guests appeared beautiful and resplendent in their various attires. It was a melodious evening to remember as Evangelist Ebenezer Obey amongst other musicians entertained guests with top-rate live music. Also present at the event were the wives of the celebrant, who were supported by notable personalities like Erelu Abiola Dosunmu, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, Dr. Akintunde Ayeni, Hon. Desmond Elliot, Mr. Adewale Ayuba and Nollywoody stars. One after another, the happy guests showered eulogies on the music legend, expressing the fact that the ageless music maker has played his part and continues to impact humanity. King Sunny Ade will ever remain someone everybody is proud to be associated with. Happy birthday sir! 177

he heights great men reach and keep are usually not attained by sudden flight but they, while their companions sleep, were toiling at the night. This famous saying certainly applies to Mr. Sunday Akin Dare, Journalist, Author, Chief of Staff and Media Adviser to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Governor of Lagos State and All Progressive Congress (APC) National Leader. As someone who has traveled the world in the practice of his profession, it was no surprise that when he hit the BIG 50, the event was celebrated with so much pomp and attended by political heavyweights especially from Lagos 182
State. The golden jubilee of this intelligent, amiable and hardworking man began with a lively service at the Ikoyi Baptist Church, Ikoyi, Lagos. The Thanksgiving service commenced with an opening hymn and prayer, followed closely by readings from the Holy Bible. The day’s sermon was preached by Pastor A. E. Lawal who was later joined by other men of God and the entire congregation to shower prayers on the celebrant and wife The highest point was when a couple of people were invited to speak about the celebrant. Senator Oluremi Tinubu spoke glowingly about his honesty and dedication to duty. Later, a first-rate reception was held at the exquisite Sky Restaurant of Eko Hotel and Suites. The strictly by invitation event was put together by top notch luxury events planner from the United Kingdom, Kunbi Olorode. The classy venue was filled to the brim with dignitaries who came from far and near to honour Dare, who is largely described as an epitome of humility. Tunde Adewale, Tee A was the Master of ceremonies at the event that flowed smoothly. The close knit event was chaired by Senator Gbenga Ashafa and The Vintage Band churned out scintillating classics which had the guests dancing at different times in the course of the event. The celebrant also used the
opportunity to launch a book: 'Datelines: A Journalist's Narrative', a fine sample of his craft as a journalist and a compelling and intelligent representation of his opinion pieces, reports, reactions and essays on burning issues from his mind and pen. Sunday Dare’s media experience spans the print, radio and television journalism. Dare served as the Head of the Hausa Service of the Voice of America in Washington DC for 8years. He is the Founder and Publisher of News Digest International magazine based in Lagos and Editor-In- Chief of Newsbreaksnow.com, an online news website. She noted that the Storymoja Festival which was designed to encourage young writers and creative arts enthusiasts, debuted in 2007 in Nairobi, Kenya and the 2016 version 186
was held at the Du Bois Memorial Centre, Accra. She explained that Moja from Storymoja means “one” in Kiswahili but means ‘’ blood” in the Akan language. As blood is the life current that flows through the body, we are telling the world that the heart of a people, in this case, the African People, will continue to beat when the stories of the continent continue to be told.” She said. The event which was tagged “Creating A Smarter Africa’’ was also in honour of the late poet and writer, Prof. Kofi Awoonor began with musical Invocation by Dela Botri, a renowned flutist who titillated guests including Vice President of the Republic of Portrait of the Late Prof. Kofi Nyidevu Awoonor
