THE ROYAL WEDDING OF
PRINCE ADEDAMILOTUN ADEREMI AND PRINCESS FUNMILOLA ODUTOLA IN LAGOS, NIGERIA

B
liss was the word on everybody’s mouth on the day Prince Adedamilotun Oluwapelumi Aderemi and Princess Oluwafunmilola Ayokunle Odutola formalized their years of friendship-and got married in the presence of family and friends. The ceremonies: an engagement, church service and reception were statements in class, style and colour. This was an occasion when love was celebrated with fanfare and in the most regal manner. And what made the whole nuptial top-rate was the fact that both families are well connected and the guest’s list was very intimidating. The groom, is the son of Prince Adedamola Aderemi, a cerebral barrister, practicing in Nigeria and in the United Kingdom, grandson of late Ooni of Ife, Sir Adesoji Aderemi and former Premier of Western Nigeria, Alhaji D S Adegbenro and a Director of OVATION International Magazine. 18

That is not all, his mother, Princess Kemi Aderemi, is the daughter of Professor Kayode Oyediran, a former Vice-Chancellor and Mrs. Tola Oyediran. She is also the granddaughter of the late Sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. The bride on the other hand, is the daughter of Engr. (Sir) Adelana Odutola, an accomplished Engineer and seasoned administrator, who was born into the royal family of KoyeluErinwole of Sagamu. He is a retired Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Minister of Works and now a successful businessman. Her mother, Lady Ranti Odutola (nee Seriki) also retired as a Permanent Secretary in the Lagos State Civil Service. The royal wedding kicked off with the engagement and traditional wedding at the Classique Events Centre in Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos. The whole venue was heavenly transformed by the event planners: Ruby Fay Events and 2706
Events. Both families were allocated different sections of the arena but as it is the norm, it was the bride’s parents and her family members that arrived and settled in first. The groom’s parents were next to arrive. They were heralded by the renowned Ife Royal “Osirigi” traditional gongs, drummers and singers and accompanied by friends and family members. They immediately exchanged pleasantries with the Odutola family before making their way to their allotted seats. A session of prayers formally kicked off the ceremony, and the traditional comperes took over. A letter of intent was presented by the Aderemi’s and this gesture was reciprocated with an acceptance letter by the bride’s family. The rest of the ceremony moved smoothly till the groom was invited to make his entry.

The dashing groom, who was all smiles entered the arena with his friends and as soon as he got in front of his in-laws, he put his royal heritage and British Education aside to follow the Yoruba tradition of prostrating flat as a sign of respect to his in-laws. This was appreciated by all especially his parents who nodded with pride. He was then showered with prayers by the Odutolas and later, his own parents spent time praying for the success of the union. In no time, he was ushered to a special seating area with his friendsand was now waiting for his wife, the beautiful Princess to appear. It was not long before the venue was enveloped with lively rhythms of

Yoruba drums and then the bride and her friends made their appearance dancing excitedly. Her face was covered with a veil. She immediately slowly made her way to her parents who asked her once again that the Aderemis had come for her hand in marriage and if indeed she was ready for this matrimonial adventure. She replied in the positive and was then showered with prayers by her parents and elders of her family. She was unveiled by Princess Aderemi, maybe to confirm that it was their bride that was presented to them. She flashed her trademark smile, ushered the new addition to their family to her husband, and together, they held her hand and prayed for her.

The next stage was to test Oluwafunmilola. She was to confirm that she knew full well whom her Prince Charming was. She was handed his cap, he was to locate him in the hall and place the cap on his head. It did not take her too long to locate her friend and lover, and falling on her knees, like a well-groomed Yoruba lady, she placed the cap on his head amidst cheers from all present. In appreciation, he showered her with some naira notes and words of prayer. Oluwafunmilola’s next task was to choose an item she cherishes from the bunch that the Aderemi family had presented to her family. She went straight for the Bible to the delight of all. It was with this Bible in hand that they both declared their love for each other and he slipped an engagement ring on her fingers. The couple later cut their cake and danced heartily. The ceremony went on smoothly till well into the night. A few days later the Aderemi and Odutola families met again. This time it was for the Solemnization of the wedding ceremony of ‘Damilotun and ‘Funmolola at Methodist Church City Mission, Surulere , Lagos. While the dashing groom arrived in a Bentley
(accompanied by his best man, Adesekemi who wore an outfit by Deola Sagoe & Clan), the bride who was stunning and resplendent stepped out of a limousine. They were in high spirits and ready for the momentous occasion. The couple were joined by the Very Rev. Johnson Sunday who indicated that they must love and cherish each other till death! Though it was when the couple said “I do” that was the highpoint of the church ceremony, it must be said that the service was indeed lively and spirit-lifting. Later, the families and their guests headed to Classique Event Centre, venue of a lavish reception. Once again, the venue was well-decorated and the event planners, Ruby Fay and 2706 Events was exceptional. The ambience was welcoming and everywhere was emblazoned in royal purple. The Master of Ceremonies was Tunde Adewale, Tee A. He was at his professional best and really added zest to the occasion. The couple danced into the hall to soulful classical music from Violinist, Godwin Strings and later also
enjoyed the performance of Bee Jay Sax. They cut their cake made by groom's aunt, Nike Ademidun of Queens Quest, fed each other and shared an intimate dance session that evoked a sense of admiration and love from all corners of the hall. As expected the occasions were attended by notable personalities and guests were well pampared with meals by Laveda, Malas, Choppies, Dami's Kitchen, Peter Dove BBQ and Executive Chefs. That was not all, guests were also served desserts by The Red Brick Bakery Limited and Perfect Desserts. While Don Tee Cocktails and Pointone were in charge of drinks He enjoyinged a lovely moment with his mother on the dance floor rocking to a medley of tunes by Faith Band, soon after his wife and her dad had showed their moves too, Adedamilotun delivered a powerful thank you speech. Later, there was an after party where Juju Gospeller, Atorise performed for a few minutes before a DJ Loyalty jammed for hours and everyone had a good time. 39

session of Carols was hosted by dashing Nollywood icon and everyone’s darling, Richard Mofe-Damijo fondly called (RMD) and OVATION TV’s own pretty Presenter, the delectable Daala Oruwari. In his welcome address, Chairman/CEO of OVATION Media Group, Bashorun Dele Momodu thanked everyone who has supported the brand for the past 20 years, he was particularly grateful to UBA which backed the OVATION Carol idea at its inception and the bank’s current Chairman, Mr. Tony Elumelu for his love and friendship. He also used the opportunity to thank Dangote Group and its President, Alhaji Aliko Dangote and other corporate organisations and individuals who have advertised or patronized OVATION in the last 20 years. After applauding the dedication of past and present staff, he saved the best for last by heaping praise on the 2016
sponsors Globacom and its Chairman, Dr. Mike Adenuga Jnr. He noted that Dr Adenuga epitomises unequalled charity and love for the good of others which has made him make great impact on the lives of thousands of Nigerians through his numerous business concerns and in his personal capacity as a philanthropist. He stressed that the high point of the OVATION carol was the assistance to the needy which rekindles hope for the hopeless. In his address, Globacom’s Commercial Coordinator, Enterprise Business Group, Mr. Folu Aderibigbe, who represented the company at the event said Globacom’s collaboration with the organisers of the carol was indicative of the unflinching love the company nurses for the people. According to Mr. Aderibigbe “I am sure you will unanimously agree with me that the Ovation Carol is getting bigger, greener and better.”

The theme of this year’s edition “It’s all about hope” is indeed very apt as it signals regeneration which is the hallmark of Christmas, the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. “For Nigerians, the theme triggers hope that despite the extant recession, all will be well. The economy will turn the corner and make a steady journey towards recovery. “For us at Globacom, our passionate love for the people guides all our actions. From the per second billing which made telecommunications services accessible to all, to our numerous firsts culminating lately, in the speed of life, the Glo 4G LTE, we have always ensured provision of quality products at affordable rates to our esteemed subscribers. This is our bond with Nigerians and we assure you that we will never renege on this. Needless to say, it is also for this reason that we have continued to partner with laudable initiatives like the Ovation Carol, an international star-studded musical fiesta organized to return thanks to the Almighty for His numerous mercies in the out-going year. “Our association with Ovation Carol is in continuation of our support for music widely regarded as the food of love. As you are all aware, the yuletide period is a season of mirth and celebration. We are very 82
proud of our association with Ovation Carol and this explains why we extended invitation to our loyal subscribers, many of whom are in this gathering, to experience this very rich menu of sublime musical variety. We welcome the legendary Cameo music group to Nigeria and applaud the other A-listers billed to perform tonight. Special recognition to our own pearl, King Sunny Ade. We join the world to wish the living legend, a happy 70th birthday!” Thereafter guests were treated to hours of pulsating entertainment by upcoming and popular artistes from across the continent and beyond. It was the rising artistes that began the day: Ruby & Pearl, a set of twins thrilled with their Afrofusion performance, then came Zeynab, Shikane, Eniola, LAX and Iyo. The high-tempo set by these new acts, was sustained when Glo Ambassadors Korede and Reekado Banks hit the stage. The audience sang along and had loads of fun. For those who wanted a feel of classical music, the Ovation Green Carol delivered in that respect too-Olu Sax, who played with a band, thrilled guests with a lively medley of contemporary songs including some soulful carols. And the ever reliable Abiodun Koya gave another
five star opera rendition that elicited a standing ovation. She also showed her dexterity by introducing the audience to her latest single, a very danceable beat. If you thought that was enough for one night, then you have never savoured the Ovation Carol experience, velvety voiced Simi also hit centre-stage and she did not leave until she sang her mega hit single “Jamb Question”. In Ghana, many may not know him, but Dee Aja’s song, Onapo was adjudged by all as the No.1 song in Ghana in 2016. Onapo was the campaign song of President Mahama, and it became so popular that different remixes soon emerged. At the Ovation Green Carol Dee Aja and his crew sang a gospel version of Onapo-and it was well received by the largely Nigerian audience. International Award-winning gospel artiste, Sonnie Badu whose song “Baba o!” is an anthem at many churches was also on stage. He transformed the venue into a heavenly worship centre with popular chorusesmany where enveloped in the spirit and where on their feet throughout his performance. Cymbals, a group of talented dancers who are all undergraduates also showcased their talent on the night. Their dance steps, acrobatic display and amazing moves delighted the audience.

When Larry Blackmore and the other members of Cameo hit the stage in their outlandish costumes, it sparked an effect from the audience. From the younger generation, the reaction was that of shook but the older ones, it was a feeling of nostalgia as the band got into its groove and performed its popular oldskool jams. The fun continued with the performance of Nigeria’s sexy hunk and Glo Ambassador, Flavour. Playing with a well-grilled band, Flavour thrilled the audience with his super hits, the tempo around the venue definitely hit an all-time high throughout. There 90
Oluwafemi, Abayomi, Aderemi, Kassim & Waheed
were even screams of “more more” from a section of the audience as he rounded off and sneaked back stage. The entertainment content of the night reached its crescendo with the arrival of the 70 year-old Juju Maestro, King Sunny Ade. Sunny Ade performed like a young man of 25, moving his body with the ease of a teenager. He was magnificent. This was an excellent finale to a wonderful night and it was no wonder that His Excellency, President John Mahama, who confessed later that he was a KSA fan stepped on stage to rock gingerly to this unique
brand of highly percussive African beats! The occasion was not all about music though, there was a segment to honur worthy individuals. This segment was personally compered by Bashorun Dele Momodu. Babatunde Okungbowa aka OJB Jezreel, a talented Producer/Performer, who worked with stars such as Tu Face, Wizkid, RuggedMan, Jazzman Olofin, Weird MC, Paul Ik Dairo, Daddy Showkey, Sir Shina Peters Olu Maintain, Faze, Iyanya, D'banj, Durella, Wizkid, Yemi Alade and Jamaican super star, Bennie Man was recognized.

OJB who produced a couple of theme songs for OVATION Carol was acknowleged for his tenacity, creativity and humility. His wives and children were invited centre-stage to receive a much-deserved award. For their talent and dexterity on the dance floor coupled with their decision to pursue their education with vigor, The Cymbals Dance Group received support from the organizers of the Ovation Green Carol in continuation of spreading its message of hope and supporting worthy causes and individuals. It was for his work in Ghana, where he has tirelessly worked towards revamping and restoring hope for street kids in Accra, Ghana that Mr. Richard Ofori Mac Carty was also honoured. The Chairman of OVATION Group then introduced President John Dramani Mhama who was going to be
inducted into the elite OVATION Hall of Fame and presented with a plaque. He described President Mahama as the pride of Africa, an epitome of humility and hardowrk, and a man who put rebuilding his country above political considerations. Bashorun stated that no one in Ghana could quarrel with the infrastructural turn around that President Mahama had brought to every part of Ghana. “I was privileged to travel to all 10 regions of Ghana and I was astonished at the gigantic projects completed by the Mahama administration in just 5 years of being in office. In Mahama, Africa has a true statesman and I can assure him that he will have a hug role to play in Africa and world affairs in the near future” He stated
There was a short clip of the various projects including the transformation of the Kwame Nkrummah Circle now called “Little Dubai” before President Mahama stepped on stage to receive his award. In an emotional speech, President Mahama said he was overwhelmed with joy at such an honour from Nigeria and OVATION. He said it was a beautiful thing to be appreciated for what he humbly termed “Modest work” that has been done in Ghana. He advised African leaders to think first about the people they pledged to serve, rather than their selves. He then lauded Globacom Chairman, Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr. (GCON), for what he described as his ”bold foray into the business landscape of Ghana when only foreigners dominated the telecommunications sector of the country” 95

According to him, Adenuga’s investment in Ghana has added value into the sector which was hitherto regarded as the exclusive preserve of foreign investors, adding that this is a testimonial of the business guru’s ”raw courage and great audacity”. This was why “our nation recently conferred Ghana’s highest award of the Companion of the Star of Ghana (CSG) on Adenuga”, he explained. According to him “Dr. Mike Adenuga is one African who had broken through in telecommunications and entrepreneurship as a whole. From my experience since I was a Deputy Communications Minister and later Communication Minister, the industry was dominated by foreign companies until Dr. Adenuga came with his submarine cables and innovations. That was why we recently

presented him with the highest award. It is good to honour our foremost business people”. Referring to his recent loss at the Ghanaian polls, Mahama waxed philosophical: “while I might feel disappointed that Ghanaians did not see what I was trying to do, the will of the people must be respected. In four years time, there will be another election and the people will speak. Let the narrative be that Africa is developed. I have moved on and will hand over on January 7th”, he said. He also gave kudos to the Publisher of Ovation Magazine, Chief Dele Momodu, whose 24th wedding anniversary fell on the date, for his giant strides in the last 20 years of publishing OVATION Magazine as well as the success of the ninth edition of the OVATION Carol. Chief Momodu, he noted, is “a pan-Africanist,
a passionate believer in democracy, a patriot and a comrade.” The induction into the OVATION Hall of Fame was then performed by GMD/CEO of UBA, Mr. Kennedy Uzoka assisted by Former Governors Aremo Olusegun Osoba and Mr. Rotimi Amaechi. Another inductee into the OVATION Hall of Fame was King Sunny Ade. He too was full of praise for the OVATION Media Group for the decision to honour him on his 70th birthday. Guests were all well pampers with assorted drinks and special cocktails courtesy of De Potters Limited and also they had a good serving of canapés. Without any shadow of doubt, the OVATION Green Carol was a superlative and exquisite night of indescribable fun.

henever the rich or influential in the society gather, the event that brings them together is always special, and so it was when Executives of the Monte Carlo Polo Club were in Lagos to partner the Lagos Polo Club. The partnership which was sealed during the 2016 Nigeria Polo Association (NPA) Lagos International Polo Tournament which took place at the prestigious Lagos Polo Club, Ikoyi, Lagos, was to seek areas of collaboration that will be of benefit to both entities. According to Mr. Francesco Mitrano who led the team from Monaco, France, their visit to Nigeria was to prepare the ground for the Monte Carlo Polo tournament.

He declared that he was very happy to be at the Lagos Polo Tournament, adding that it was his first time in Nigeria and that the hospitality he has received was tremendous and impressive. In addition, he noted that from what he has observed, the level of polo in the country was very high and that it was obvious that The Monte Carlo Polo Club will learn some things from Nigeria, while extending an invitation to Nigerian players. According to him “Monte Polo Club is a young club. It started its beautiful adventure four years ago, and it is a very honourable thing that we have Prince Albert’s patronage in the past four years. It is a ten gold end-cup tournament, and the very nice thing is Capt. Nogie MeggisonAlhaji Aliko Dangote, Segun Agbaje & Otunba Bimbo Ashiru

that we are hosting teams from many countries, and already we have done three editions, and we are out to prepare the fourth edition of the Monte Carlo Polo Tournament 2016 where Nigerian players will feature” he said. In her view, an associate of the Monte Carlo Polo Federation, Lina George Haidar, expressed the happiness of her team in coming to Nigeria as well as impressed by the hospitality of the Nigerian people. She described Nigerian polo players as good, but need exposure. “Clearly, there has been a lot of interest of Nigerians in Monaco, and they come around every
year. The polo players in Nigeria are among the best in world, but I think their talent is hidden. Now is the time for them to bring them over to Monaco to expose them and show the world how brilliant they are. We know that Nigeria football players are making the headlines all over the world; we want to do the same with polo players,” Haidar said. Channelle George and Nelly Kholobikian were also members of the Monte Carlo Polo Federation team visiting the Lagos Polo Tournament. They separately described their mission to Nigeria as that of bringing exposure to Nigerian polo players by taking some of
them to Monaco for the Monaco Tournament that took place from September 15 to 18, 2016. “We are here to build a relationship between Monaco and Lagos because Nigeria has some top talents, and it is about time we discovered them and exposed those talents to the whole world,” they said. For a game that harps on total safety for both player and animal, it is obvious that players will benefit greatly from better training, conditioning and competition and that, according to the team from Monaco, is the reason for scouting for Nigerian players to play in Monte Carlo. 135

Head of the Interim Government of Nigeria, Chief Ernest Shonekan and wife, Chief Akintola Williams, Chief Femi Olopade, Chief Olu Falomo, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, Head of the Federal Civil Service, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita and Archbishop Cardinal Olubunmi Okojie were among the guests that made the church service. The reception at the Habor Point, Victoria Island Lagos had all the imprints of the celebrant. It was classy, stately and regal. The décor was top notch and guests were also well pampered. His entry into the venue was electrifying, he brought the Efik tradition all the way to Lagos, complete with colourful dancers, masquarades and the
melodious music. The Ifa Ibom Efik Eburutu was in full flow. He was heralded into the venue like a true blue-blooded royal that he is-the audience was on its feet and applauded him till he settled into his special seat. The Master of Ceremonies was none other than leading comedian, Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule (aka Okey Bakassi), He steered the event expertly, ensuring that there were no hitches. It was Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita, Head of Civil Service of Nigeria who coordinated the cutting of the cake-and a toast was later proposed for Etubom Ani who was conferred with a Honorary Doctorate of Science Degree in Public Finance by University of Uyo.
In his vote of thanks, Etubom Ani thanked God for sparing his life all these years. He stated “"I didn’t know I would be 80 and thank God for many more healthy years. I'm a politician that led the whole Cross River people in politics, I financed politics then and developed politics in Cross River, but it is such a shame that politics is now financing people. People are now in politics not to add value but to make money”. He said he would continue to offer his expertise to Nigeria and thanked all those who came to share this wonderful occasion with him and his family. The party flowed seamlessly till very late with God Bless and his Eboni Band providing good quality music. 155

S
ulemana Abubakar (Abu) recently celebrated his 50th birthday in Accra in grand style with four days of fun and thanksgiving appropriately dubbed ‘Forever Young’. Abu is one of a kind. He is the son of the late Alhaji M.B. Sulemana, member of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s political team and Prophetess (Mrs.) Ernestina Veronica Halm. The fourth of six siblings, his mother raised him to fear God and value education and family. He graduated with 1st class honors in Civil Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and also holds an MBA in Finance and Project Management from Imperial College, London U.K. He is a family man, married to Nana Efrima Sam, and together they have three lovely kids: Zidane, 19-year old son, is a freshman at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA; Zeeta, 15-year old daughter at the SOS School, Ghana; and Zaiid, 10year old son at Multikids Academy in Ghana. This stylish, fun-loving gentleman is also the Chief Information Officer for GE Africa. A role which sees him travel across the African continent and the world, driving growth and productivity for GE through the use of digital technology. He’s also responsible for recruiting and grooming IT talent for GE in Africa.
Abu loves to unwind with movies, sports and music and enjoys hanging out with friends he’s made over the years. All those who know Abu know that he throws great parties and friends from all over the world made it a point to attend the 4-day event in Accra. The first event was on Tuesday November 1, 2016 with his friends from GE joining him at home for brunch, socializing and reminiscing. Friday night kicked off the weekend with a soiree at the popular Silver Star Towers. Family and friends turned out in their numbers to celebrate with Abu at the roof top and DJ Foe kept the evening jamming with great music. Abu arrived at the party with his beautiful wife and children, and spent most of the night personally ensuring that everyone had fun. Ghana’s finest Master of Ceremonies, the stylish dresser, KKD, who’s also Abu’s cousin, handled proceedings with his usual panache. In their tributes on the night, wellwishers described the birthday boy as a caring guy, and wished him everlasting youthfulness. In his response, the elated celebrant, beaming with smiles, thanked everyone that found time to grace his occasion, and asked them to return the next day for the main event. The third event was an exclusive allblack dinner at the World Trade Center, in the heart of Accra. The décor was spectacular and the ambience classy as guests included former First Lady, Nana Konadu AgyemanRawlings, Sir Sam Jonah and wife, and Nana 167

Prah Agyensaim IV and wife. The birthday boy made his grand entrance with a wicked performance with Flash Mob Ghana to kick off the event. Food and drinks flowed at the event as the guests enjoyed good music and a video montage of birthday wishes from family and friends who were unable to attend. His kids entertained the crowd with ‘inside’ stories about their dad the ‘disciplinarian’ and there were speeches by his wife and uncle, Opanyin Kweku Dua. 170

In his own remarks, Abu told OVATION “I don’t feel a day older than 25. I wish that God will give me another 50 years so I live to be 100 or more”. According to his wife, ”Abu is an amazing man, an amazing husband and a great father”. His mother’s wish was that he lives a long life like his grandmother did. The celebration was rounded off on Sunday with a thanksgiving service at the Calvary Methodist Church in Adabraka, where the family worshipped in all white. Abu told us that it was necessary to thank God for
everything in his life because without the grace of God, nothing is possible. He noted that this was the most important aspect of the celebration. After the service the close knit family and friends headed to Coco Lounge Restaurant for lunch. The high point of the lunch was when the waiters put up a special birthday display for Abu, presenting him a special chocolate birthday cake and he was lovingly fed by his wife. This, indeed, was a very lively finale to a first class 4-day celebration.
